Today, the show comes from Lewes, in East Sussex.

0:00:020:00:06

These are the beautiful grounds at the Priory of St Pancras.

0:00:060:00:11

The priory fell victim to the

0:00:110:00:12

Dissolution of the Monasteries Act,

0:00:120:00:15

passed by Henry VIII in 1536.

0:00:150:00:18

But that's all in the past. Today, it's all about the present.

0:00:200:00:24

Two teams shopping against the clock,

0:00:240:00:26

looking to make a profit at auction.

0:00:260:00:29

So no time to waste. Let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:290:00:33

Welcome to Lewes High Street, where the teams are ready to

0:00:580:01:01

go into battle and try and come out

0:01:010:01:03

on top by making the biggest profit.

0:01:030:01:06

Let's have a wee look at what's in store.

0:01:060:01:09

Emotions are running high as one team are seeing red.

0:01:100:01:14

No, I hate them. I'm going to put my foot down.

0:01:140:01:17

They are absolutely hideous.

0:01:170:01:20

The others have a bad case of the blues.

0:01:200:01:23

-We are losing here.

-We are.

0:01:230:01:24

-We've lost. We're doomed.

-But I just haven't seen the right thing.

0:01:240:01:28

And the auction blows hot and cold.

0:01:280:01:31

-Oh!

-Come on!

0:01:310:01:32

Oooh...

0:01:320:01:33

But that's all coming up later.

0:01:350:01:37

First, let's meet today's teams.

0:01:370:01:40

-Hello, everyone. ALL:

-Hello!

0:01:400:01:43

Today, it's a family affair. And for the Reds, we have Sophie

0:01:430:01:48

and her grandad, Pat.

0:01:480:01:50

And for the Blues, we have Gemma and her dad, Tim.

0:01:500:01:55

So, Pat, you're retired...

0:01:550:01:57

-Yeah.

-..but you were a fireman.

0:01:570:02:00

And for all us gals, firemen are very glamorous characters.

0:02:000:02:05

Tell us a bit about your life as a fireman.

0:02:050:02:08

Well, I joined way back. It was in 1968 when I joined.

0:02:080:02:11

It's a job where you go in and it's something different every day,

0:02:110:02:14

and that's what keeps the adrenaline going.

0:02:140:02:16

I have to ask you, what made you apply to be in the show?

0:02:160:02:20

I've been trying to get the family

0:02:200:02:22

-to come on the show with me for years...

-Oh!

0:02:220:02:24

..and the only one who stepped up to the mark was Sophie.

0:02:240:02:28

Now, I know that you and Sophie are pretty close,

0:02:280:02:31

but you think of your grandad as a bit of a geezer, am I right?

0:02:310:02:35

I think he likes to think he's a bit of a geezer.

0:02:350:02:37

-Basically because I come from Peckham.

-Oh, right.

0:02:370:02:40

Peckham. I recognised your accent. THEY LAUGH

0:02:400:02:43

-Fools And Horses, I'm more the fool.

-Oh, right.

0:02:430:02:47

Now, Sophie, when you're not hanging out with your cool

0:02:470:02:51

grandad, what do you get up to?

0:02:510:02:54

I'm a supervisor in a menswear shop.

0:02:540:02:56

-Ah, right. But you like to travel as well?

-A fair bit, yeah.

0:02:560:03:00

I've done a lot of European capitals, but I'd like to do more.

0:03:000:03:03

So you guys obviously get on very, very well,

0:03:030:03:06

but how are you going to get on out there today?

0:03:060:03:09

Well, hopefully, we will work well as a team.

0:03:090:03:11

She's having all the profit anyway, so she's got to...

0:03:110:03:14

-That's very important.

-..work harder.

-THEY LAUGH

0:03:140:03:17

Well, that sounds wonderful and I'm sure you'll do well.

0:03:170:03:20

-And now for our Blue team.

-Hello!

0:03:200:03:23

-Gemma and Tim.

-Yes.

-Lovely to have you on the show.

0:03:230:03:26

So, Gemma, you're currently a student.

0:03:260:03:28

-Tell me what you're studying.

-I am.

0:03:280:03:30

I'm currently studying bioveterinary science.

0:03:300:03:33

I'm in my third year and I've just applied

0:03:330:03:35

to study vet school afterwards.

0:03:350:03:37

So another five years on top of the three years cos I thought,

0:03:370:03:40

"What about just staying in education and

0:03:400:03:42

"not ever getting a job?"

0:03:420:03:43

It's the best way of doing it.

0:03:430:03:44

I'll just rely on my dad for the rest of my life.

0:03:440:03:46

-Aw!

-It's good, it's fine.

0:03:460:03:47

-Well, that's what dads are for.

-Exactly.

0:03:470:03:50

-Tim, tell us what you do for a living.

-I'm an electrician.

0:03:500:03:53

-A lowly electrician.

-Right.

0:03:530:03:55

Luckily, being an electrician has taken me

0:03:550:03:57

to a lot of places around the world, so I feel quite privileged.

0:03:570:04:00

I've been to Hong Kong, Japan.

0:04:000:04:02

-Had six weeks in Central Park in New York.

-He never takes me.

0:04:020:04:06

-I get left at home.

-Ah. So how are you guys going to get on out there?

0:04:060:04:11

-We know what we like...

-Yeah.

0:04:110:04:13

What sort of things do you like?

0:04:130:04:15

Can we give that away now?

0:04:150:04:16

Because the opposition might get a few hints.

0:04:160:04:18

-They might get in first.

-We won't tell them. We won't tell them.

0:04:180:04:22

May the best Red team win.

0:04:220:04:24

I'm not going to hold you back any longer, folks.

0:04:250:04:28

-Now for the money moment. £300 for you, and £300 for you.

-Thank you.

0:04:280:04:33

Your experts await, so off you go and very, very, very good luck.

0:04:330:04:38

Families, eh? And of course,

0:04:400:04:43

our teams need some guidance along the way, so let's meet the experts.

0:04:430:04:47

Helping out the Red tribe today, it's Nick Hall.

0:04:490:04:52

And scooping out a profit for the Blues, it's Philip Serrell.

0:04:530:04:57

Well, guys, it's absolutely packed with goodies in here.

0:05:030:05:06

-So what are we looking for?

-Anything that catches our eye, really.

0:05:060:05:09

Something pretty, I think.

0:05:090:05:10

Well, things to do with animals, that's our thing we love.

0:05:100:05:13

Something to do with country pursuits.

0:05:130:05:15

-Dogs.

-Dogs.

0:05:150:05:17

Dogs, horses. Anything along those lines.

0:05:170:05:19

-Sounds to me like we have got a plan, then.

-It's a plan.

0:05:190:05:22

OK, teams. 60 minutes on the clock. Your time starts now.

0:05:220:05:26

BELL RINGS

0:05:260:05:28

-Well, look. Let's get stuck in and have a good look round.

-OK.

0:05:280:05:30

-Let's go find a dog.

-OK.

0:05:300:05:32

Right, teams.

0:05:320:05:34

Time to rove around for Rover.

0:05:340:05:36

By the looks of it, you're spoilt for choice.

0:05:360:05:39

They have loads of these dogs everywhere.

0:05:390:05:41

Yeah, if they've got loads...

0:05:410:05:43

Staffordshire dogs. Bit old school, bit like me, really.

0:05:430:05:45

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:05:450:05:47

I'm not saying a word, Phil.

0:05:470:05:49

It's quite a cute little thing.

0:05:490:05:51

-How much is it?

-£45.

-It's £45, yeah.

0:05:510:05:55

Is it worth thinking about coming back to?

0:05:550:05:57

-It might be a little pricey.

-Pricey, yeah.

0:05:570:05:59

There's definitely a theme today.

0:05:590:06:01

There's one other thing I did see as we came through. There's a...

0:06:020:06:06

Oh, brace yourselves.

0:06:060:06:09

-This one, here.

-Oh, the brace.

-The brace. It's different, isn't it?

0:06:090:06:12

God, that's so diverse.

0:06:120:06:13

The little Art Deco ashtray to a woodworking...

0:06:130:06:16

I like that, though.

0:06:160:06:17

Look, I'll go and have a chat with the gallery staff

0:06:170:06:19

and we'll get it out and have a look.

0:06:190:06:21

-That would be great.

-Thank you.

-Good stuff.

0:06:210:06:23

Meanwhile, the Blues still only have one thing on their minds.

0:06:230:06:27

Yeah, there is a couple of dogs there,

0:06:270:06:29

but not really, not quirky, are they?

0:06:290:06:31

They're not. They're not.

0:06:310:06:32

-So we're looking for a quirky dog.

-No, nothing at the end either.

0:06:320:06:35

-I don't think so.

-Back downstairs.

-Back down. Back down.

0:06:350:06:38

Right, let's go and have a wander.

0:06:380:06:39

Hm. A quirky dog. I think you may have

0:06:390:06:42

your work cut out today, Phil.

0:06:420:06:44

-Guys, I found Stephen, and Stephen has the key.

-Great.

0:06:440:06:48

So, what we'd like to do,

0:06:480:06:50

if we could have a look at the brace, wasn't it?

0:06:500:06:52

Yeah, very much so.

0:06:520:06:53

Have a close look and see if you can spot a maker's name.

0:06:530:06:55

-They're often stamped.

-In the wood?

0:06:550:06:57

Into the wood, yeah, or sometimes engraved into the metal.

0:06:570:07:00

-It's obviously been cleaned up and polished.

-It's quite heavy as well.

0:07:000:07:03

But you like it as an object?

0:07:030:07:05

Yeah, I don't really understand what it is,

0:07:050:07:08

but that's fine, if you like it.

0:07:080:07:10

There's a great name for things like this. They call them mantiques.

0:07:100:07:14

-BOTH:

-Mantiques.

-Yeah, which is boys' toys, really.

0:07:140:07:18

The drill bit would go in there, you tighten it up, and then you'd put

0:07:180:07:21

a bit of elbow grease and screw your hole into the wood or masonry.

0:07:210:07:25

Yeah, it's nice. If I was into that...

0:07:250:07:27

It all falls down to price, as always with these.

0:07:270:07:30

Stephen, it's over to you.

0:07:300:07:32

What's the best you can work for us on that?

0:07:320:07:35

OK, well, this dealer does 20% for trade, so we're down to £48.

0:07:350:07:39

-I'd do 45 for you.

-45?

-Uh-huh.

0:07:390:07:41

-I like it.

-I think we should.

-I think there's a chance on that one.

0:07:410:07:45

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-I'm happy with it.

-Yeah, that's great.

0:07:450:07:48

-From a commercial point of view...

-We got our first item.

-£45.

0:07:480:07:52

Ah, you know the drill, Nick.

0:07:520:07:54

Five minutes in, one item down, good work, Reds!

0:07:540:07:58

-What does that say there?

-Gem, you have a look.

0:07:590:08:01

Come on, Gemma.

0:08:010:08:02

-READS:

-Many make it the household, but only one the home.

0:08:020:08:05

Do you like that?

0:08:050:08:07

-It's quirky.

-Not a quirky dog, though, eh, Gem?

0:08:070:08:12

-I like the groovings of it, though.

-The groovings?

0:08:120:08:15

-The impressions, I don't know the...

-I like the groovings.

0:08:150:08:18

-The groovings of it...

-The grooving.

-Let's quickly,

0:08:180:08:20

-grooving on.

-Grooving on.

0:08:200:08:22

Knife rest there, they're quite nice, aren't they?

0:08:240:08:27

Only cos you like dogs. I'm not a fan.

0:08:270:08:30

Well spotted, guys.

0:08:300:08:32

There's two, look. There's the majolica dogs, 1900, 1910.

0:08:320:08:37

-£85.

-A little bit toppy for us.

-Yeah?

-For auction purposes.

0:08:370:08:43

They're ugly as well.

0:08:430:08:44

Crikey, Sophie.

0:08:440:08:46

There's no beating around the bush with you, is there?

0:08:460:08:49

-How are the Blues getting on?

-What's this, Phil?

-I think that's sweet.

0:08:490:08:52

It's a little school desk, isn't it?

0:08:520:08:54

I think that's really, really sweet.

0:08:540:08:55

How much is it?

0:08:550:08:57

It either says £45 or £95.

0:08:570:08:59

-£45 in my eyes, what is it really?

-95.

0:08:590:09:02

-Oh, it's 95.

-Yeah.

0:09:020:09:03

What you want to do is get all these off

0:09:030:09:05

and have a good look under this little cushion.

0:09:050:09:09

-Oh, no, that's lovely.

-It is nice.

-It's really good.

0:09:090:09:11

-Do you like that?

-I do, yeah. We?

-Yeah.

-Definitely, yeah.

0:09:110:09:15

Shall we go and see what we can do?

0:09:150:09:17

Oh! It's Stephen, just in time.

0:09:170:09:19

-Good sir.

-So, on the ticket there, it's 95.

0:09:190:09:22

Right.

0:09:220:09:23

But just chatting with Phil, we'd like to go low end,

0:09:230:09:26

which is at 50 straight away.

0:09:260:09:27

-All right, OK, well this dealer is willing to do 20%.

-BOTH:

-OK.

0:09:270:09:31

I can't work that out.

0:09:310:09:32

It's two lots of £9.50, isn't it?

0:09:320:09:35

-OK.

-So I'll take £20 off for you.

0:09:350:09:38

75 quid.

0:09:380:09:40

-Could we ask you to keep that put by for us?

-Surely.

0:09:400:09:42

-Don't let that other lot buy it.

-OK.

-It would knock the opposition.

0:09:420:09:45

-Keep it put by for an hour.

-An hour?

0:09:450:09:47

You've only got 50 minutes left.

0:09:470:09:49

We've got a question for you.

0:09:490:09:51

-We're looking for old dogs.

-Right.

-Have you got any old dogs?

0:09:510:09:55

-We want an old dog.

-Well, there's a dog over there,

0:09:550:09:58

on the ink well.

0:09:580:10:00

-Shall we have a look?

-We'll have a look.

0:10:000:10:01

We're going to have a wander round,

0:10:010:10:03

but you'll definitely keep that for us.

0:10:030:10:05

-I will. I'll go dog hunting for you.

-Yeah, you go dog hunting.

0:10:050:10:09

These two certainly have a penchant for a pooch.

0:10:090:10:12

Back to the Reds.

0:10:130:10:14

That's a weird little monk thing.

0:10:160:10:19

I don't know what it is.

0:10:190:10:21

What drew you to that?

0:10:210:10:22

Cos that's really quite an interesting thing.

0:10:220:10:24

-I suppose it's a bit weird.

-It is a bit weird.

0:10:240:10:26

I tell you what, I would imagine that the inside is hollow.

0:10:260:10:29

Ah, right, yes.

0:10:290:10:31

And it's going to be one of those porcelain candle snuffers.

0:10:310:10:34

They can be really collectable. Shall I go and find Stephen again?

0:10:340:10:36

-That would be great.

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:10:360:10:38

Stephen's a man in demand today.

0:10:390:10:41

Right, so, I mean the good news is they are candle snuffers and

0:10:440:10:48

they're by Royal Worcester, which is a great name. It's a good factory.

0:10:480:10:51

What's not so good is they are the modern copies.

0:10:510:10:54

Well, certainly this one is, which I think is Mr Punch, isn't it?

0:10:540:10:57

-Yeah, it looks like it.

-Oh, no, it isn't!

-THEY LAUGH

0:10:570:11:00

That's the way to do it, Nick.

0:11:000:11:02

It's a nice thing. It's well modelled, though.

0:11:020:11:04

Can I have a look at that one, Soph? Can I swap with you?

0:11:040:11:06

And you take him.

0:11:060:11:08

So we've got this friar reading the good book.

0:11:080:11:11

40 on this one.

0:11:110:11:14

-It's 33, this one.

-33 on that one. There might be a slim margin in it.

0:11:140:11:18

-I'm thinking, no.

-You've gone off them now?

0:11:180:11:20

Yeah, because they're not the old ones.

0:11:200:11:22

-And I think they are absolutely hideous.

-Well, you spotted them.

0:11:220:11:28

-Don't blame us!

-I spotted them. I saw that they were weird.

0:11:280:11:31

-Well, they are.

-They're weird and not worth anything.

-OK, fair enough.

0:11:310:11:34

Well, look, let's put them back in the cabinet.

0:11:340:11:36

We've still got all the time in the world.

0:11:360:11:38

-Not for us.

-Not for us.

0:11:380:11:40

OK, well, look, onwards and upwards. Let's see what else there is.

0:11:400:11:43

-You didn't want them, did you?

-No, no.

-OK.

-Just as well, isn't it?

0:11:430:11:45

You can see who's in charge, can't you?

0:11:450:11:47

Crikey, Sophie, you're not pulling

0:11:470:11:49

any punches today, are you?

0:11:490:11:51

Right, how's the dog hunt going?

0:11:510:11:53

I'm not too fussed about that dog over there.

0:11:530:11:55

But I have found one in here.

0:11:550:11:57

-But you'll have a look, won't you?

-Yes, please.

0:11:570:11:59

Let's have a look at this little doggie, if we might, then.

0:11:590:12:02

There we are.

0:12:060:12:07

-GEMMA:

-Can I see? Can I see? Oh.

-You like that, yeah?

0:12:070:12:09

I do, yeah. He's really sweet. OK.

0:12:090:12:12

He's not very much, but I think that...

0:12:120:12:15

-Heavier than I thought.

-Heavier than I thought, yeah.

0:12:150:12:18

What do you think, Phil?

0:12:180:12:19

I mean it's not bad. It's £14, so on your...

0:12:210:12:25

'12.'

0:12:250:12:26

-12. 12.

-Ouch.

0:12:260:12:29

I think we definitely want to get this one.

0:12:290:12:32

I've fallen in love with him, so...

0:12:320:12:34

'Lovely, OK. Are you sure it's a he?'

0:12:340:12:36

-Don't know.

-You're the vet.

0:12:360:12:39

You can't tell from that.

0:12:390:12:40

-Yeah, we'll do the deal on that, then.

-'OK, lovely.'

0:12:400:12:43

-Thank you very much.

-Is that desk and...?

0:12:430:12:45

And I think we'll also, while we've got you here, I think we'll...

0:12:450:12:48

-Go for the desk as well?

-We've got £75 for the desk.

-Correct.

0:12:480:12:52

-Shake the man's hand.

-OK.

-And we've got £12 for your dog.

-Yeah.

0:12:520:12:56

-Shake the man's hand.

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much indeed.

0:12:560:12:59

-And I'll do it just for good luck.

-Well done. Two items down.

0:12:590:13:03

Half an hour. Off we go.

0:13:030:13:04

Nice work, Blues.

0:13:040:13:06

Halfway into your shop and two items down.

0:13:060:13:10

Looks like Pat has found a familiar mantique.

0:13:100:13:13

How about that?

0:13:130:13:15

-Vintage fire engine.

-Is it an old one?

0:13:150:13:17

-Yeah, oh, I don't think it is.

-No?

0:13:170:13:20

It was made a week last Thursday.

0:13:200:13:22

VINTAGE HORN BEEPS

0:13:220:13:23

Not quite a mantique, then.

0:13:230:13:25

Right, teams, remember, your time's ticking away.

0:13:250:13:29

What about the scales in there? Is that something?

0:13:290:13:32

-At £145...

-Yeah.

-I think they're £60 to £90 worth.

0:13:320:13:36

That's what I think.

0:13:360:13:38

Money box owl? Quite like it. Price tag of £78.

0:13:380:13:41

-I think that's £20 to £30.

-OK.

0:13:410:13:44

They're cute little glass pots.

0:13:440:13:46

-£450.

-I didn't see that bit of it.

-Oh, no.

0:13:460:13:50

Ouch! This shopping isn't as easy as it looks. Eh, guys?

0:13:500:13:55

I think we were lucky that the two items were right next

0:13:550:13:57

-to each other and they jumped at us straightaway.

-Yes.

0:13:570:13:59

-Which is how we tend to shop. That was kind of our plan.

-Yeah.

0:13:590:14:02

-If we like it and it suited us, we'll have a look at it.

-Get it.

0:14:020:14:05

Time to get a grip on the situation.

0:14:050:14:07

You're 35 minutes into your shop!

0:14:070:14:10

There is not much up here, though, Nick, is there?

0:14:100:14:12

Certainly not as much as we saw downstairs, that's for sure.

0:14:120:14:15

You're still thinking about those candle snuffers, aren't you?

0:14:150:14:18

Go for those two and that gives a bit of time to

0:14:180:14:20

look for our last object and really concentrate on the last object.

0:14:200:14:23

You might be right. I think he might be right.

0:14:230:14:25

Ah, so coming round to the idea of those snuffers, eh, Soph?

0:14:250:14:29

Now you've seen them again, are you still anti them?

0:14:290:14:32

I just think they're a bit gross.

0:14:320:14:34

Cos you know why Pat's interested, don't you?

0:14:340:14:36

Because they're candle snuffers and he's spent half his life

0:14:360:14:39

-putting fires out.

-Yeah.

-THEY LAUGH

0:14:390:14:42

I think you boys have made up your mind. Poor Sophie.

0:14:420:14:45

-Why don't I go and have a chat with Stephen?

-OK.

0:14:450:14:47

-See if I can come back with a figure.

-OK.

0:14:470:14:49

-And just chew it over and you see what you think.

-OK.

-OK.

0:14:490:14:53

-All right, I'll go and get a price for you.

-That's great.

0:14:530:14:56

-I know you don't like them, but if they are collectable...

-Yeah.

0:14:570:15:01

We mustn't go for what WE like or what we don't like,

0:15:010:15:04

is it, really?

0:15:040:15:05

Precisely, Pat.

0:15:050:15:06

Now, hopefully there's a bit more unison over at the Blue camp.

0:15:060:15:10

-Right, so we're now losing time, aren't we?

-We are.

0:15:100:15:14

We've got two bits bought and we need to...

0:15:140:15:16

-Struggling on the last one.

-..we need to concentrate.

0:15:160:15:20

Ah, so now it's time to concentrate, Phil?

0:15:200:15:23

Let's hope Nick is a bit more focused.

0:15:230:15:25

There is a deal to be done if you buy them both together for one lot.

0:15:250:15:29

55 quid for the two.

0:15:290:15:31

-Well, they're so nice(!)

-She's still not sure, is she?

0:15:310:15:34

I think we should go for it, Sophie.

0:15:340:15:35

-I think there's a margin of a profit there.

-All right.

0:15:350:15:38

Yeah, are you happy with that?

0:15:380:15:39

£55 for both of them and it'll make one lot in the auction.

0:15:390:15:42

-OK, fine.

-Are you sure?

-Yeah, yeah.

-OK, brilliant.

0:15:420:15:44

I'll go and tell Stephen it's sold and we'll push on for the next lot.

0:15:440:15:47

-Fab.

-Two bought. Well done.

-Yeah.

0:15:470:15:50

Well, it took a bit of persuasion, Soph, but you got there in the end.

0:15:500:15:54

How are you getting on, Blues?

0:15:540:15:56

-We're losing here.

-We are.

-We've lost. We are doomed.

0:15:560:15:59

We've got 20 minutes left. We've got a pocket full of money.

0:15:590:16:02

-What are we going to buy? How much do you want to spend?

-We'll spend...

0:16:020:16:05

A pound or £200?

0:16:050:16:07

£199 if it's the right thing,

0:16:070:16:08

but I just haven't seen the right thing.

0:16:080:16:10

Oh, dear. Oh, dear.

0:16:100:16:11

I think Sophie is with you there, Tim.

0:16:110:16:14

I'm just wary that Sophie hasn't chosen any of the three things.

0:16:140:16:19

-You know...

-True, yes.

-THEY LAUGH

0:16:190:16:22

-Have you got your eye on something?

-Yeah, but it's all like...

0:16:220:16:25

-I don't think it'll sell.

-Do you want to have a look at those?

-Yeah.

0:16:250:16:28

Have a look at those each and see what you think.

0:16:280:16:31

What does that one say?

0:16:310:16:33

-This one says £17.50.

-That's not bad. Does it say if it's silver?

0:16:330:16:37

-Silver...

-Silver and turquoise.

0:16:370:16:39

Well, turquoise is quite a good stone to have in jewellery.

0:16:390:16:42

It's a pretty design. And yours, Soph?

0:16:420:16:44

-It's £22 and it says Arts and Crafts.

-Yeah.

0:16:440:16:48

I think you might have hit upon a nice little group lot there.

0:16:480:16:51

Oh, sounds promising, eh, Soph?

0:16:510:16:54

-I think after touching them, they feel a bit cheap.

-Oh.

0:16:540:16:57

-They're not the quality you were hoping for?

-No.

0:16:570:16:59

Well, she knows what she likes at least. Ten minutes left.

0:16:590:17:03

Right, well, let's put these back.

0:17:030:17:06

Bearing in mind we haven't got long, just a few minutes left,

0:17:060:17:09

there was one thing I spotted earlier in a cabinet

0:17:090:17:12

back that way which you might like. But we're going to have to run.

0:17:120:17:15

Because we're going to run out of time.

0:17:150:17:17

-Let's go.

-OK, let's go.

-Come on.

0:17:170:17:19

MUSIC: Flight Of The Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov

0:17:190:17:22

Right, Nick, it's time to work your magic.

0:17:220:17:25

Ooh, that's it.

0:17:250:17:27

Now, look, you two, it's this one in here. Something I spotted earlier.

0:17:270:17:31

Yeah, I like that.

0:17:310:17:32

-You like that?

-Yeah. It's really cute.

-Oh, alleluia.

0:17:320:17:34

I must admit, it's different, isn't it? Yes, I like that.

0:17:340:17:37

-It's unusual. Do you want a closer look at it?

-Yeah.

-Yes, very much so.

0:17:370:17:40

And I'll tell you now as well, it's got 48 on the ticket price,

0:17:400:17:43

it can be 40 if we really want it.

0:17:430:17:46

-OK.

-Let's go and have a look at it.

0:17:460:17:47

OK, Blues. Five minutes to go and one item left to buy.

0:17:490:17:53

-Well, they're Doulton, aren't they?

-Those are Doultons, yeah.

0:17:530:17:56

-If the price is right...

-You need the key to the cabinet.

0:17:560:18:00

Oh, looks like Stephen's busy with the Reds.

0:18:000:18:03

-So what do you think?

-I think we'll go for it.

-Yeah.

0:18:050:18:07

-I think we'll go for that...

-Yeah, your choice, Sophie, yes?

0:18:070:18:10

-Yeah, I like it a lot.

-Really?

0:18:100:18:12

-Yeah, I would have that.

-Do you want to know anything about it?

0:18:120:18:16

-LAUGHS:

-Not really. I'll just take it!

-Just buy it! I like this.

0:18:160:18:20

-Buy it! Buy, buy, buy.

-Give me some facts.

0:18:200:18:23

OK, well, look. It's advertising ware, it's smoking memorabilia,

0:18:230:18:27

it's 1920s-ish, I think. It looks like it should be.

0:18:270:18:32

Unless it's one of those pesky reproductions...

0:18:320:18:35

-At this stage, I think we ought to go for it.

-Yeah.

0:18:350:18:37

You're quite right. We haven't got much time, have we?

0:18:370:18:39

-So, it can be yours for £40.

-Done.

0:18:390:18:41

-Deal done?

-Deal.

-Right.

-Third item.

0:18:410:18:44

-Shake this man's hand and give him some cash.

-Thank you.

-And we...

0:18:440:18:47

Thank you very much Stephen. ..are done.

0:18:470:18:50

Great stuff. Three items in the bag. Well done.

0:18:500:18:54

Back to the Blues. And quick as a flash,

0:18:540:18:57

Stephen has arrived with a key.

0:18:570:18:59

-These are Doulton. Started off making drainage pipes.

-Oh, really?

0:18:590:19:02

Yeah, and we want to just check that there's any damage.

0:19:020:19:05

One of the best ways of checking for damage is run your fingers

0:19:050:19:08

round it like that.

0:19:080:19:09

Because your fingers are so sensitive, you'll feel

0:19:090:19:11

-if there's a nick or a chip there.

-Yeah.

-I can feel no nicks or chips.

0:19:110:19:14

-OK.

-Good.

-These were made back-end of the 19th century.

0:19:140:19:18

-And we've now got about two minutes left.

-On 48, what...?

0:19:180:19:22

-DEALER:

-That could be 40.

0:19:220:19:23

They're going to make at auction perhaps between 20 and 40 quid.

0:19:230:19:28

So if you're lucky, you get your money back.

0:19:280:19:30

Living on the edge here, team. One minute left.

0:19:300:19:32

-Could you squeeze that a bit more?

-We'll do another two, 38.

0:19:320:19:36

-GEMMA:

-I think that's our decision.

-Yeah 100%.

-Definite?

0:19:370:19:39

And you both like them?

0:19:390:19:40

-BOTH:

-Shake the man's hand?

-Shake the man's hand.

0:19:400:19:43

-Steve, thank you very much.

-Thank you.

0:19:430:19:45

Stop shopping! Time's up!

0:19:460:19:48

This pressure's not good for me.

0:19:480:19:51

-Well, we've done. Three items in the bag.

-Oh, my goodness.

0:19:510:19:54

Let's check out what the Red team bought.

0:19:540:19:57

First up, after putting the screw on,

0:19:580:20:01

they managed to get the brace for £45.

0:20:010:20:04

Next up, they sniffed out the snuffers for £55.

0:20:060:20:10

And it was a match made in heaven for their final piece,

0:20:110:20:15

the porcelain ashtray, cost them £40.

0:20:150:20:18

Pat, Sophie, did you have a nice time?

0:20:200:20:22

-Yeah. It was great.

-It's been fabulous.

0:20:220:20:23

Pat, what was your favourite item?

0:20:230:20:25

Well, my favourite items were the candle snuffers.

0:20:250:20:28

-All right. Did you agree with that, Sophie?

-I HATED them.

0:20:280:20:31

-You hated them!

-They are so ugly.

0:20:310:20:34

-Sophie, what was your favourite item?

-The advertising ashtray.

0:20:340:20:37

All, right, OK. You think that's going to make the best profit?

0:20:370:20:40

Maybe, but I do think the candle snuffers

0:20:400:20:42

-might make the best profit...

-Even although you hate them.

-I HATE them.

0:20:420:20:46

-Well, how much have you spent, chaps?

-£140.

0:20:460:20:49

140? Well, that means you give me £160.

0:20:490:20:54

Now, Nick, that's quite a lot of money.

0:20:540:20:56

That's a lot of money, isn't it?

0:20:560:20:58

Have you got anything that you think might

0:20:580:21:01

please both of them?

0:21:010:21:03

-Well, that is my main goal, to please them beyond all else.

-Yeah.

0:21:030:21:06

-And if anyone can do it, you can do it.

-Thank you.

0:21:060:21:09

Meanwhile, let's check out what the Blues bought.

0:21:090:21:13

They were sitting pretty with their first item.

0:21:130:21:15

The school desk set them back £75.

0:21:150:21:19

Next, they purchased the pup for £12.

0:21:200:21:23

And finally, with a minute to spare,

0:21:250:21:28

a pair of Royal Doulton vases set them back £38.

0:21:280:21:32

-Did you guys have a good time?

-Fabulous.

-Such a good day.

0:21:320:21:35

-Really, really good day.

-Thoroughly enjoyed it, yeah.

0:21:350:21:38

Tim, what was your favourite item?

0:21:380:21:39

It has to be the dual children's desk.

0:21:390:21:43

Gemma, do you agree with your dad?

0:21:430:21:45

No, I found a little silver dog. And, yeah, he was...

0:21:450:21:48

He was my favourite, I think, so...

0:21:480:21:50

Whether he'll make a profit, I don't know, but...

0:21:500:21:53

-Fingers crossed.

-We'll just have to wait and see.

-We will, we will.

0:21:530:21:56

-How much money did you spend?

-125.

0:21:560:21:58

-Well, could I have 175 back?

-175 for you.

0:21:580:22:02

All right, which I'm going to hand over to Phil,

0:22:020:22:05

who loves to spend money.

0:22:050:22:06

Now, what are you going to buy with that, Phil?

0:22:060:22:08

-All that money for me?

-Phil, all that money!

0:22:080:22:10

-Can you do that?

-I'll lead them gently into a profit.

0:22:100:22:13

-We like that, Phil.

-We do.

-We like it.

0:22:130:22:15

We have every confidence in you, Phil.

0:22:150:22:17

-Fool.

-THEY LAUGH

0:22:170:22:20

While Phil's shopping, I'm going off on a little jaunt.

0:22:200:22:23

I've travelled a few miles along the coast to the town of Worthing.

0:22:270:22:31

Now a bustling seaside resort,

0:22:310:22:33

this Sussex town has a dark and hidden past.

0:22:330:22:37

During the 18th and 19th century, UK coastal towns like Worthing

0:22:380:22:43

saw a huge surge in the smuggling of contraband.

0:22:430:22:47

The quantities of imported goods were on a huge scale.

0:22:480:22:52

Gin was sometimes so plentiful

0:22:520:22:54

that it was said that people would clean their windows with it.

0:22:540:22:58

However, it was on the 22nd of February 1832 that the

0:22:590:23:04

smuggling trade in Worthing would change forever.

0:23:040:23:07

William Cowerson led a team of 200 men on a daring smuggling run

0:23:070:23:13

which would go down in local history

0:23:130:23:15

and also cost him his life.

0:23:150:23:18

I've been joined by local social historian Chris Hare.

0:23:200:23:24

Tell us more about the night in question.

0:23:240:23:27

Well, the smugglers had landed off the coast here,

0:23:270:23:30

and then they unloaded these barrels of brandy, hundreds of them.

0:23:300:23:34

So they came up here, and this was a rough field then.

0:23:340:23:36

And they carried on until they got to the junction of High Street

0:23:360:23:40

and Warwick Street, but there, they were ambushed by the coastguard.

0:23:400:23:43

The coastguard had been alerted.

0:23:430:23:45

They had, and so it was a planned ambush,

0:23:450:23:48

and the smugglers immediately dispersed.

0:23:480:23:50

And if we walk up there, I'll show you what happened then.

0:23:500:23:52

Great.

0:23:520:23:53

Today, Anita, Warwick Street is shops.

0:23:560:23:58

But in 1832, these were all houses.

0:23:580:24:01

And of course, no streetlights. It would have been dark.

0:24:010:24:03

This was like three in the morning.

0:24:030:24:05

So the smugglers come in here, in the dark.

0:24:050:24:07

There's a commotion because the riding officers,

0:24:070:24:10

these are the mounted coastguards,

0:24:100:24:12

are firing their pistols in the air, and they're doing

0:24:120:24:15

that as an alert to coastguards to bring in reinforcements.

0:24:150:24:19

So there's this commotion.

0:24:190:24:21

People look out their windows, the smugglers are in trouble,

0:24:210:24:24

they open their doors and let the smugglers into their houses.

0:24:240:24:28

And then they open the back doors, and then they go out into all the

0:24:280:24:31

little myriad streets and alleyways that were at the back in those days.

0:24:310:24:35

So the occupants of these houses were on the smugglers' side.

0:24:350:24:39

Very much so, very much so. And not on the side of the coastguard.

0:24:390:24:43

Now, the coastguard was led by Lieutenant Henderson,

0:24:430:24:46

but like nearly all the coastguard,

0:24:460:24:48

he wasn't familiar with this area at all.

0:24:480:24:50

So they went searching for them and would have gone

0:24:500:24:53

up in pursuit down alleyways such as this one here.

0:24:530:24:56

So Cowerson and a large group of smugglers

0:25:000:25:03

are tearing up this alleyway to

0:25:030:25:06

get to the Teville Stream, where there was a bridge.

0:25:060:25:09

And in those days, on the bridge was a gate that was padlocked at night.

0:25:090:25:13

And because they are held up by the gate,

0:25:130:25:16

the coastguard catches them up.

0:25:160:25:18

And Cowerson turns round with his six-foot hazel stave

0:25:180:25:22

and smashes Henderson on the arm, breaking his arm.

0:25:220:25:27

But unfortunately for Cowerson, Henderson was left-handed.

0:25:270:25:31

GUN FIRES

0:25:310:25:32

And he had his pistol in his left hand, not his right hand.

0:25:320:25:35

And he shoots him point-blank range in the chest.

0:25:350:25:39

And Cowerson falls lifeless to the ground.

0:25:390:25:41

But that was sufficient time for his men to scramble over the gate

0:25:410:25:45

and escape. All the coastguard were left with was Cowerson's dead body.

0:25:450:25:50

And what did they do? Where did they take the body?

0:25:500:25:52

Well, the body was taken to the local inn,

0:25:520:25:54

The Anchor, and that's just up here.

0:25:540:25:56

And we can go and have a look at it.

0:25:560:25:58

So before Cowerson's body was laid to rest, he was brought here.

0:26:040:26:09

He was brought here, to The Anchor, which is now called

0:26:090:26:11

the Corner House, where the inquest was held.

0:26:110:26:14

And the jury returned the verdict of justifiable homicide,

0:26:140:26:19

which was no surprise. But many local people

0:26:190:26:22

were so sympathetic to Cowerson,

0:26:220:26:24

they almost felt it was murder.

0:26:240:26:26

But the body was released to the family

0:26:260:26:28

-and 1,000 people attended the funeral.

-1,000?

0:26:280:26:31

Which, given how small the population was then

0:26:310:26:34

compared to today,

0:26:340:26:35

would be like 10,000, 15,000 people at a funeral.

0:26:350:26:38

So he was regarded almost as a hero

0:26:390:26:41

who died for a just cause.

0:26:410:26:43

Chris, that's an incredible story, and thank you

0:26:440:26:47

-so much for sharing that with us.

-Pleasure.

0:26:470:26:51

But let's call it a night. Tomorrow, we have an auction to go to!

0:26:510:26:55

Today, we're at Bellmans Auctioneers in Billingshurst,

0:27:030:27:07

and we're joined by Will Pasfield, our auctioneer.

0:27:070:27:10

-Will, it's lovely to be here.

-Good, good.

0:27:100:27:13

-I'm glad you came. Nice to have you here too.

-Ah, thank you.

0:27:130:27:16

-Now, let's look at the Red team's stuff.

-Yeah.

0:27:160:27:19

First up is this carpenter's brace.

0:27:190:27:22

Now, carpenters' tools are very popular in auction.

0:27:220:27:27

-Do you like this piece?

-Absolutely love it.

0:27:270:27:30

It's a shame it's not signed, that one.

0:27:300:27:32

Not the end of the world, but we've got the

0:27:320:27:34

ebony pad on the end, which is a nice thing to see.

0:27:340:27:37

It's actually a wee bit of sculpture as well as being a functional item.

0:27:370:27:41

Yes, it's artwork. It's quite tactile. It's quite nice to touch.

0:27:410:27:44

What's your estimate on this item?

0:27:440:27:46

The estimate's £20 to £30 on this one.

0:27:460:27:48

Oh, well, they paid £45 on this one, Will.

0:27:480:27:52

-Could be a come and buy me estimate.

-Yes, yes. A little tantaliser.

0:27:520:27:57

Lovely, lovely. Now, what about these candle snuffers?

0:27:570:28:01

Royal Worcester, they're mid-20th-century. It's a good name.

0:28:010:28:05

They always will sell.

0:28:050:28:07

I've never actually understood why you can't just blow a candle out.

0:28:070:28:10

I've got to be honest with you, why you can't just blow one,

0:28:100:28:12

but they're not as collectable as they used to be.

0:28:120:28:14

-What's your estimate in these?

-£30 to £50.

-30 to 50.

0:28:140:28:17

-Now, they've paid £55...

-Right.

-..on these two.

0:28:170:28:20

We've got to be top estimate, that's what you're saying to me.

0:28:200:28:23

Yeah, excellent. Now, what about this little ashtray here?

0:28:230:28:27

The little advertising item for Abdulla cigarettes?

0:28:270:28:33

Yeah, like it. Once again, I do like it. It's a nice novelty.

0:28:330:28:37

And we need novelty in the world today.

0:28:370:28:39

Well, Sophie liked that one. What's your estimate on that?

0:28:390:28:43

My estimate on that is £40 to £60.

0:28:430:28:45

-40 to 60, well, they only paid £40 for it.

-Right, there we go.

0:28:450:28:48

-That's a good start.

-We could be sniffing a profit on this one.

-Yes.

0:28:480:28:52

So, all in all, not too bad, and they may not need their bonus buy.

0:28:520:28:57

But let's go and have a look at it anyway.

0:28:570:28:58

Sophie, Patrick, you spent £140,

0:29:000:29:04

which was not too bad.

0:29:040:29:07

You left Nick 160.

0:29:070:29:10

Nick, what did you buy?

0:29:100:29:12

-Here we go.

-What do you think about those two?

-Well, that's quite nice.

0:29:120:29:15

-Can I hold one?

-Absolutely, one each.

-What are they?

0:29:150:29:19

They are fire irons.

0:29:190:29:21

You put them on the side of the hearth to rest your poker

0:29:210:29:23

and shovel and brush on them, but they're late Victorian, they're

0:29:230:29:27

Arts and Crafts, they've got that

0:29:270:29:29

sort of Christopher Dresser look about them.

0:29:290:29:31

-I quite like them.

-Good.

-I like them more than what we got.

0:29:310:29:34

Well, I'm selling it to you.

0:29:340:29:36

Hopefully, we're going to sell it to the punters at the sale.

0:29:360:29:38

-How much did you pay, Nick?

-Now, £30 for the pair.

-Really?

0:29:380:29:41

-Yeah, a bargain. I did say.

-How much do you reckon they'll go for?

0:29:410:29:45

-Big question. I would hope £40, £50 maybe?

-Oh, I like these, yeah.

0:29:450:29:50

We're in with a chance, Anita.

0:29:500:29:51

-You've done well, Nick. That's great.

-Brilliant.

0:29:510:29:54

-So you like them? You like them?

-Yeah, really like them.

0:29:540:29:57

You don't need to make a decision now.

0:29:570:29:59

Wait until your first three lots have been sold.

0:29:590:30:02

But right now, we're going to find out what the auctioneer

0:30:020:30:05

thinks of Nick's fire rests.

0:30:050:30:08

Will, what do you think of these fire iron rests?

0:30:100:30:13

-This is Nick's bonus buy.

-As objects, I love them.

0:30:130:30:17

They're beautiful. They've got a lovely shape.

0:30:170:30:20

Sadly, though, I think we're going to struggle with selling them

0:30:200:30:23

for a great deal of money.

0:30:230:30:24

We can still sell the big ones, the big country house ones.

0:30:240:30:27

These are more from a Victorian house,

0:30:270:30:29

from a small Victorian semidetached mid-terrace.

0:30:290:30:32

The need for these is slightly negated.

0:30:320:30:34

What's your estimate on this item?

0:30:340:30:37

-I'll put an estimate of £30 to £50 on those.

-That's not bad, Will!

0:30:370:30:41

Nick only paid £30, so there's a sniff of a profit there.

0:30:410:30:45

-Yeah, if they're needed, we should check out on those.

-Lovely.

0:30:450:30:48

So now turning to the Blues.

0:30:480:30:50

Their first item was this wonderful double desk and chair,

0:30:500:30:55

-turn of the century. What do you think? Do you like it?

-It's...

0:30:550:30:58

It's sweet, for want of a better word.

0:30:580:31:01

I personally love old against new.

0:31:010:31:03

And actually, in a contemporary room,

0:31:030:31:05

a nice bit of old will go quite nicely, I think.

0:31:050:31:09

-So what's your estimate on that?

-I'll put an estimate of £40 to £60.

0:31:090:31:13

-They paid £75 for it, but they're nearly there.

-Yes.

0:31:130:31:17

-With a good wind behind the little desk...

-Yeah, they're nearly there.

0:31:170:31:21

-We could get a surprise on that one.

-I'll do my best again.

0:31:210:31:24

Ah, excellent, excellent.

0:31:240:31:26

Now, this little doggie here, little silvery doggie,

0:31:260:31:30

-tell me what you think of that.

-It's a nice thing.

0:31:300:31:32

Maybe if we were in the Scottish Borders in sheep farming

0:31:320:31:35

territory, you know, the collie dog might do better.

0:31:350:31:37

You know, we're in black Labrador territory down here.

0:31:370:31:40

-Oh, really.

-It's a wee thing.

-It's a wee thing.

0:31:400:31:43

It is definitely a wee little thing.

0:31:430:31:45

Um, I like it, but I can't get too excited about it.

0:31:450:31:49

-Tell me what your estimate is.

-£10 to £20.

-Yeah. It's not a lot.

0:31:490:31:53

-They paid £12 for it.

-Right, there we go.

-But it could make a profit.

0:31:530:31:57

Yes.

0:31:570:31:58

Excellent. Now, what about Doulton? Traditional auction fare.

0:31:580:32:03

Doulton, the best of the factories. Tell me what you think of these.

0:32:030:32:07

I still like them,

0:32:070:32:09

and I like the colours, but I think at the moment,

0:32:090:32:11

Doulton is struggling.

0:32:110:32:13

It's a little bit...fussy for today's market.

0:32:130:32:17

And same again, some of these things can be bought on size.

0:32:170:32:20

Much like the collie dog, they're a bit wee.

0:32:200:32:22

-I think we might struggle with these a little bit.

-OK.

0:32:220:32:24

-What's your estimate on the Doulton?

-£20 to £30.

0:32:240:32:27

20 to 30. They paid £38 on that, so they may struggle a wee bit.

0:32:270:32:32

In which case, they'll need their bonus buy,

0:32:320:32:34

so let's go and have a look at it.

0:32:340:32:36

-Gemma, Tim. You spent £125.

-We did.

0:32:370:32:43

-You handed over £175 to Phil.

-We did.

0:32:430:32:47

Phil, did you spend every penny?

0:32:470:32:49

No. No, no.

0:32:490:32:52

I've got something that I think is really interesting

0:32:520:32:54

and you'll...you'll love it or like it.

0:32:540:32:57

-OK...

-Are you ready for this?

-No.

-Yeah.

0:32:570:32:59

Are you ready for it? Go for it.

0:32:590:33:01

-Now, you're going to ask me what it is, aren't you?

-Yeah.

0:33:030:33:06

I don't actually know what it is,

0:33:060:33:07

but I thought it was really, really nice. It might be a donkey collar.

0:33:070:33:11

But I love this here, look. J Lee, Makers of Kingston.

0:33:110:33:15

And this lovely old bit of leather here. And I love things like this.

0:33:150:33:18

How much did you pay for it, Phil?

0:33:180:33:21

-I was hoping you wouldn't ask.

-THEY LAUGH

0:33:210:33:24

I paid £45 for it.

0:33:240:33:26

OK. How much do you think it's going to make?

0:33:260:33:29

-£46?

-THEY LAUGH

0:33:300:33:33

It's a profit.

0:33:330:33:34

But it's an unusual item, Phil.

0:33:340:33:37

-Nobody knows the price of it.

-Thank you, Anita.

0:33:370:33:40

Do you know, she's always on my side. It's lovely.

0:33:400:33:43

-You don't need to decide just now.

-OK.

-Probably a good job, really.

0:33:430:33:47

THEY LAUGH

0:33:470:33:49

But let's find out what the auctioneer thinks

0:33:490:33:53

about Phil's old donkey collar.

0:33:530:33:56

OK, well, this is Philip's bonus buy. What do you think of that?

0:33:570:34:02

I like it again.

0:34:020:34:04

Whether it's a donkey collar,

0:34:040:34:08

I'm not too sure.

0:34:080:34:09

I can't find out much about J Lee.

0:34:090:34:12

Did it go on a donkey? I don't know.

0:34:120:34:14

Has it been round a tiger in a zoo once upon a time? Who knows?

0:34:140:34:18

-We don't know, and that's what makes it interesting.

-And so exciting.

0:34:180:34:21

-Yes.

-What's your estimate on that?

0:34:210:34:23

The estimate on that is £20 to £40.

0:34:230:34:25

Philip paid £45 on that.

0:34:250:34:29

It could be their saving grace or it could be a complete choker.

0:34:290:34:32

SHE LAUGHS

0:34:320:34:34

I like it, I like it. This will be very, very exciting.

0:34:340:34:38

40. 5. 50.

0:34:380:34:40

60. 5 now.

0:34:400:34:41

5 anywhere? All done, thank you. 70.

0:34:410:34:44

Sophie, Pat, the moment of truth.

0:34:460:34:48

-Are your lots going to make lots of profit or not?

-Not.

0:34:480:34:54

Are you excited?

0:34:540:34:56

-I'm very excited, yeah.

-Full of anticipation?

-Yeah.

0:34:560:35:00

-We're quietly pessimistic.

-Pessimistic?

0:35:000:35:05

But you've bought lovely and interesting items.

0:35:050:35:07

Don't you just love their trust in me, Anita? Great, isn't it?

0:35:070:35:10

Warms the cockles of your heart, doesn't it?

0:35:100:35:12

THEY LAUGH

0:35:120:35:13

Anyway, the carpenter's brace, your first item, is coming up now,

0:35:130:35:18

and you paid £45 for it.

0:35:180:35:21

Lot 150 is a late Victorian beech

0:35:210:35:23

and brass mounted

0:35:230:35:24

carpenter's pad brace.

0:35:240:35:26

This is one with a nice

0:35:260:35:27

turn handle there.

0:35:270:35:28

And I've got two bids on here that

0:35:280:35:30

take me up to £25.

0:35:300:35:31

I'll take 30 on the floor.

0:35:310:35:33

30 and 5. And 40? £40.

0:35:330:35:35

One more, one more!

0:35:350:35:37

Is there a 5 anywhere?

0:35:370:35:38

5 anywhere? It's in the room

0:35:380:35:40

at £40. Are we all done then?

0:35:400:35:42

No! No!

0:35:420:35:43

Selling for £40...

0:35:430:35:44

No!

0:35:440:35:46

-£40.

-Who would have thought it?

-£40.

0:35:460:35:49

-Minus 5. Not bad, not bad.

-No.

0:35:490:35:53

Next item are the two Worcester candle snuffers,

0:35:530:35:56

and you paid £55 for those.

0:35:560:35:58

One is a monk.

0:35:580:36:00

And the other one is Mr Punch. There

0:36:000:36:02

they are. Stamped Royal Worcester as well.

0:36:020:36:04

And a starter for £10.

0:36:040:36:05

Who's got 15? 15 and 20. And 5.

0:36:050:36:07

And 30 and 5.

0:36:080:36:10

It's creeping up, it's creeping up.

0:36:100:36:11

And five behind. 35, sir? 35.

0:36:110:36:13

Beats me, I'm out.

0:36:130:36:14

Looking for 40, now in the room.

0:36:140:36:15

It's £35 on the right.

0:36:150:36:16

Is there a 40 anywhere?

0:36:160:36:18

Are we all done?

0:36:180:36:19

Selling for £35, one more, anywhere?

0:36:190:36:21

-All done at 35...

-No!

0:36:210:36:23

Come on, come on, come on.

0:36:230:36:24

-35.

-Aw, who'd have thought it? They're so pretty(!)

0:36:240:36:28

Oh, my heart was beating so fast there. 35.

0:36:280:36:32

-They're such a good pair together.

-Minus 5 and minus 20,

0:36:320:36:34

-you're at minus 25. That's not a lot.

-Not too bad.

0:36:340:36:38

You can make that up on the next item.

0:36:380:36:41

Lot 154 is a 1920s

0:36:410:36:42

porcelain ashtray, matchbox holder,

0:36:420:36:45

Abdulla superb cigarettes there.

0:36:450:36:47

And I've got bids here up to £40.

0:36:470:36:50

Do I see a 5 now anywhere? Anyone interested?

0:36:500:36:53

It's with me at 40, 45.

0:36:530:36:54

-50 and 5.

-They're going!

0:36:540:36:55

No, they shake their head at 55.

0:36:550:36:57

It's still with me at £50.

0:36:570:36:58

5 anywhere?

0:36:580:37:00

I've still got a commission going.

0:37:000:37:01

All done, then?

0:37:010:37:03

With me at £50, on the book at 50...

0:37:030:37:05

-LAUGHS:

-A £10 profit!

0:37:050:37:07

-£50.

-We got a profit, we got a profit.

-Well done.

0:37:070:37:09

That's plus 10 on that.

0:37:090:37:12

Minus 15. It's not a lot. Are you going to go with Nick's bonus buy?

0:37:120:37:18

He's lit the fire.

0:37:180:37:19

-Yeah.

-Yeah, definitely.

-Why not?

-In for a penny...

0:37:190:37:23

I have to say to you that

0:37:230:37:25

the auctioneer has estimated at 30 to 50.

0:37:250:37:28

So he sees a potential profit.

0:37:280:37:30

You're going to go with the bonus buy, well done. Well done.

0:37:300:37:34

-I think luck's going around...

-Yeah. I hope so.

0:37:340:37:36

Lot 160 is a pair of

0:37:360:37:38

late Victorian brass fire iron rests.

0:37:380:37:40

-Guys, we need this.

-I have bids here up to £20.

0:37:400:37:43

I'll take a 5, anywhere. Is there a 5 anywhere?

0:37:430:37:45

Have we got a 5 in the room?

0:37:450:37:46

-ALL:

-Come on!

-I'll take a 5.

0:37:460:37:48

-There's 25.

-25!

0:37:480:37:50

35? I'm out. Do I see 40 anywhere? 40 anywhere?

0:37:510:37:55

Are we all done at £35?

0:37:550:37:58

It's a profit,

0:37:580:37:59

it's a profit.

0:37:590:38:00

That's plus 5.

0:38:000:38:02

That was so exciting.

0:38:020:38:04

Well, that takes you, all in, to

0:38:040:38:06

-being minus 10, which is not bad.

-That's not bad! Not bad, yeah.

0:38:060:38:11

-Sorry, guys, no money to take home, but hey.

-That's fine.

0:38:110:38:15

The only thing is, don't say anything to the Blues

0:38:150:38:19

because that might be a winning score.

0:38:190:38:22

Gemma, Tim, are you quite excited about this? Are you nervous?

0:38:280:38:32

Yes, butterflies.

0:38:320:38:35

-Is this your first auction?

-It is.

0:38:350:38:36

-For both of you? BOTH:

-Yes.

0:38:360:38:38

That is so exciting. You might become addicted.

0:38:380:38:42

Well, maybe, it depends how much money we make or lose.

0:38:420:38:45

First item, coming up now.

0:38:450:38:47

Lot 176, an early-20th-century

0:38:470:38:49

hardwood double-seated school desk.

0:38:490:38:52

And I've got bids now, here.

0:38:520:38:53

I've got three bids here,

0:38:530:38:55

and it takes me up to £45.

0:38:550:38:56

Who's got 50 now?

0:38:560:38:57

50 for the school desk

0:38:570:38:59

-anywhere?

-There we are.

-55. 60.

0:38:590:39:02

60's got it. Do I see 5 anywhere?

0:39:020:39:04

It's on my left at 60.

0:39:040:39:06

5 anywhere else?

0:39:060:39:07

You're all out then, it's fair warning.

0:39:070:39:08

It's on the left here at £60.

0:39:080:39:10

All done at 60.

0:39:100:39:12

Ah, £60.

0:39:120:39:15

Minus 15. Never mind.

0:39:150:39:17

-The next item, and I think you picked this one, Gemma...

-I did.

0:39:170:39:21

-..the little collie.

-There it is,

0:39:210:39:22

sweet little thing here.

0:39:220:39:24

Straight in at £10. I go on the

0:39:240:39:26

commission at 10. 15 now. 15 anywhere? 15?

0:39:260:39:29

£15, I see. Looking for 20 now.

0:39:290:39:31

20 anywhere else?

0:39:310:39:33

It's with the lady at £15.

0:39:330:39:34

All done then, at £15.

0:39:340:39:37

-15!

-A profit.

0:39:380:39:40

-A profit on that.

-That's £3.

0:39:400:39:43

That's plus 3, so a good buy, a good buy.

0:39:430:39:46

Now, that's taking you to minus 12,

0:39:460:39:49

and that is not too bad at all.

0:39:490:39:52

Lot 180 is the pair of old

0:39:520:39:54

Doulton small stoneware vases.

0:39:540:39:56

Nicely shaped vases, these.

0:39:560:39:59

And who's going to start me

0:39:590:40:00

off at £10 for these vases? £10.

0:40:000:40:02

£10 is bid.

0:40:020:40:03

15. 15.

0:40:030:40:05

And 20.

0:40:050:40:06

And 5. We'll squeeze you one more.

0:40:060:40:08

5, no?

0:40:080:40:09

5 anywhere else?

0:40:090:40:10

No further interest? At £20.

0:40:100:40:13

Aw.

0:40:140:40:16

I think you were a wee bit unlucky there.

0:40:160:40:19

A wee bit unlucky.

0:40:190:40:20

Minus 18 there,

0:40:200:40:22

that takes you to minus 30.

0:40:220:40:24

-But that, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing.

-It's not.

0:40:240:40:29

Could be made up by this wonderful, weird donkey collar

0:40:290:40:33

that Phil bought for £45.

0:40:330:40:36

Are you going to take the bonus buy?

0:40:360:40:38

We're already in a loss, so we might as well.

0:40:380:40:41

We're here for the day, so, yeah.

0:40:410:40:43

-We'll go for it.

-Oh, you'll go for it.

-Nothing to lose.

0:40:430:40:45

Well, I have to tell you at this point that the auctioneer has

0:40:450:40:48

-estimated it 20 to 40.

-Oh, that's good. That's OK.

-No, it's not.

0:40:480:40:54

It's not good at all. That's really bad.

0:40:540:40:56

Here it goes.

0:40:560:40:58

Lot 186 is a late-19th-century

0:40:580:41:00

leather and brass mounted

0:41:000:41:01

donkey collar or harness.

0:41:010:41:03

You can do what you want with it if you buy it,

0:41:030:41:05

though, ladies and gentlemen.

0:41:050:41:07

£10 to start me for the donkey collar.

0:41:070:41:09

£10 is bid. Looking for 15 now. £15.

0:41:090:41:11

-It can only be one person who wants a donkey collar.

-Oh, no.

0:41:110:41:14

No? 15 and 20.

0:41:140:41:16

No, he shakes his head. It's £15 seated. Are we all done?

0:41:160:41:19

I'm selling at £15. All done at 15...

0:41:190:41:22

-Aw.

-I haven't helped you, have I?

0:41:230:41:25

So, the bonus buy, I'm afraid, brings us minus 30 there.

0:41:250:41:29

So all in all, all in all, it's minus 60.

0:41:290:41:34

Now, in the grand scheme of things, that quite possibly...

0:41:340:41:40

-You're being very kind.

-..could be a winning score.

0:41:400:41:43

She is lovely, isn't she? She's lovely, isn't she?

0:41:430:41:45

-I feel a lot better now.

-Yeah, so do I.

0:41:450:41:47

Well, well, well. That was so, so exciting.

0:41:520:41:57

You were both wonderful, wonderful teams.

0:41:570:42:01

And it's just so unfortunate that one has to be the winner,

0:42:010:42:04

and the other has to be the loser.

0:42:040:42:08

And today's loser...

0:42:080:42:10

..the Blues.

0:42:110:42:13

THEY LAUGH

0:42:130:42:16

Your old donkey collar didn't lead you into any success at all,

0:42:160:42:22

but it was a wonderful, wonderful item.

0:42:220:42:26

So you ended up with minus £60.

0:42:260:42:30

But the Reds, triumphant...

0:42:300:42:32

at minus ten. THEY LAUGH

0:42:320:42:35

Not bad at all. Not bad at all.

0:42:350:42:38

But I think that you both played a wonderful game,

0:42:380:42:42

and you both gave us a lot, a lot of fun.
