Oh, there's nothing quite like waking up in a tent,

0:00:020:00:06

stepping out onto the long, green grass and breathing in that

0:00:060:00:10

fresh country air here in beautiful Builth Wells, in Mid Wales.

0:00:100:00:15

Not only is it a great place for a spot of camping,

0:00:150:00:18

it's also a great site for our Reds and Blues to hunt out some

0:00:180:00:22

bargains as there's a huge antiques fair taking place here today.

0:00:220:00:26

So with that in mind, I don't know what we're waiting for -

0:00:260:00:30

let's go bargain hunting.

0:00:300:00:31

Every single corner of the Royal Welsh Showground here is

0:00:570:01:01

bursting with antique stalls and it's not just outside.

0:01:010:01:04

There are two exhibition halls and eight undercover buildings for our

0:01:040:01:08

teams to make their way around in just 60 minutes.

0:01:080:01:12

So it will be interesting to see how the Reds and Blues spend

0:01:120:01:15

their £300 and which items they bring back with them.

0:01:150:01:19

Let's see what's in store.

0:01:190:01:20

Coming up on today's show, we have one leading lady...

0:01:220:01:25

Whatever you like, we'll buy...

0:01:250:01:27

-As long as it's OK with you.

-..within reason.

0:01:270:01:29

-..two excited ladies... BOTH:

-Oh!

0:01:290:01:32

..and by the auction, the excitement keeps on building for the Reds...

0:01:320:01:36

-One more.

-Go on, one more.

-Go on.

0:01:360:01:39

-..and the Blues.

-YAY!

0:01:390:01:41

But that's all for later on.

0:01:430:01:45

It's time now to meet our teams and, for the Reds today, we have

0:01:450:01:48

married couple Christine and Mike and, for the Blues,

0:01:480:01:51

we have friends Mary and Helen.

0:01:510:01:53

-Welcome, everyone. Hello! TEAMS:

-Hello!

0:01:530:01:55

That was great! Lovely to see you all.

0:01:550:01:58

Going to start with the Reds and I'm coming straight to you, Christine.

0:01:580:02:01

Firstly, congratulations are in order.

0:02:010:02:03

You've recently celebrated your golden wedding anniversary.

0:02:030:02:06

That's lovely! So now I want to know how you met.

0:02:060:02:09

-We've known each other for 55 years.

-Wow.

0:02:090:02:12

We've been married for 52 years.

0:02:120:02:14

I met Mike in my first job in an insurance company.

0:02:140:02:17

I was the tea girl and the junior typist.

0:02:170:02:19

I had to go and ask Mike if he wanted a cake or would

0:02:190:02:23

he like a hot dog and he said, "Well, I'm a bit of a hot dog,"

0:02:230:02:26

and frightened me to death. I was terrified.

0:02:260:02:29

So, Mike, you're now retired, but that wasn't from insurance.

0:02:290:02:32

-You retired from another career.

-That's correct.

0:02:320:02:35

I retired from Cardiff City Police and South Wales Police.

0:02:350:02:38

I loved the job and I didn't really want to retire.

0:02:380:02:41

So, tell me now about antiques and collectables. How's your knowledge?

0:02:410:02:45

Well, we've learnt quite a bit from Bargain Hunt.

0:02:450:02:48

We love it, we watch it all the time.

0:02:480:02:50

And do you have any tactics to try and make a profit?

0:02:500:02:53

We were using our tactics on the breakfast table this morning.

0:02:530:02:56

-Explain that to me.

-We had a jug of milk on the breakfast table.

0:02:560:02:59

I had it on offer for £50. She haggled, she offered me a mere 20.

0:02:590:03:05

We eventually agreed 32.

0:03:050:03:07

And what did it sell for at auction at the breakfast table?

0:03:070:03:09

-It sold for £60.

-Fantastic! Oh, that's wonderful!

0:03:090:03:13

That's a great dress rehearsal.

0:03:130:03:15

-And you are very competitive, aren't you?

-We are very competitive.

0:03:150:03:18

-So you might be a team to reckon with?

-Oh, most definitely.

0:03:180:03:21

Most definitely. Watch out, Blues. Watch out.

0:03:210:03:24

Well, let's see what the Blues make of that.

0:03:240:03:26

Let's move on to friends Mary and Helen. Hello to you.

0:03:260:03:30

Mary, tell us how you know your team-mate Helen.

0:03:300:03:33

Well, funnily enough,

0:03:330:03:34

-she's not only my goddaughter, but my ex-daughter-in-law.

-Right. OK.

0:03:340:03:39

-And yet you're still so close.

-We're still friends, yes.

0:03:390:03:42

So what inspired you to choose Helen to be your team-mate today?

0:03:420:03:45

-Well, we get on very well together and I think that's important.

-Absolutely.

0:03:450:03:49

Because we don't want any bickering today, do we?

0:03:490:03:51

-I don't think we'll bicker.

-No, we'll keep it down.

0:03:510:03:54

Do you think that you're going to be a good bargain hunter?

0:03:540:03:56

-Well, I hope so. Yes, time will show.

-Time will show.

0:03:560:03:59

Obviously your team-mate is Helen and, Helen, we hear

0:03:590:04:02

you're a bit of a high-flyer, so tell us about your career.

0:04:020:04:04

I flew for a major airline for 15 years,

0:04:040:04:07

in first-class and I wasn't an air hostess, I was a beauty therapist.

0:04:070:04:12

-Oh, my goodness.

-So I did the massage

0:04:120:04:14

to celebrities and first-class passengers on the aircraft.

0:04:140:04:18

-So, who did you get your hands on?

-Brad Pitt.

-Really?!

0:04:180:04:21

-Oh, you're the envy of every woman watching!

-George Clooney.

0:04:210:04:26

George Clooney! Oh, that's wonderful! So you loved that job.

0:04:260:04:29

And have you given that up now?

0:04:290:04:31

Yes, I have, I gave it up to have my children. I have two little girls.

0:04:310:04:34

So what do you know about antiques and collectables? How's your knowledge?

0:04:340:04:37

To be truthful, I don't know an awful lot

0:04:370:04:39

but, like most ladies, I'm a magpie, I like anything sparkly and shiny.

0:04:390:04:43

What about you, Mary? Have you collected anything over the years?

0:04:430:04:46

What haven't I collected, really?

0:04:460:04:48

I've got a house full of collections of all sorts of things.

0:04:480:04:51

-Over a thousand spoons.

-Over a thousand spoons.

-Teaspoons.

0:04:510:04:54

And are they beautifully catalogued or are they just shoved in a drawer?

0:04:540:04:57

No, they're in racks all around my hall and up my stairs.

0:04:570:05:00

-A bit of a problem.

-They're not catalogued.

0:05:000:05:02

So what are your tactics going to be today?

0:05:020:05:04

-I want to know who's in charge.

-Mary's in charge.

0:05:040:05:07

Mary's in charge. OK, so you'll take the helm.

0:05:070:05:10

I'll carry the bags.

0:05:100:05:11

Well, you won't be able to buy spoons or anything without

0:05:110:05:13

-any money, so here's 300 for the Reds.

-Thank you.

-Fantastic.

0:05:130:05:17

-300 to the Blues.

-Thank you.

0:05:170:05:19

Your experts are eager to meet you, so I'm going to send you off,

0:05:190:05:22

wish you best of luck and, of course, have a great time.

0:05:220:05:25

-Off you go.

-Thank you.

-Bye.

0:05:250:05:27

I'll tell you what, by the end of this, I'll probably need a massage.

0:05:270:05:31

So it's time to meet today's experts.

0:05:340:05:36

Hoping to shake things up for the Reds, it's Thomas Plant.

0:05:370:05:40

And on the lookout with the Blues it's Kate Bliss.

0:05:420:05:45

-So, teams, what's the plan?

-I'm looking for something maritime.

0:05:470:05:52

-Are you?

-Something gold.

0:05:520:05:54

What are you going to be homing in on, do you think?

0:05:540:05:56

-I think jewellery and sparklies, we both like.

-OK.

0:05:560:06:00

-I like silver pin cushions, very tiny ones.

-Tiny things.

-Tiny things.

0:06:000:06:04

-And I love jewellery.

-Anything sparkly. The sparklier the better.

0:06:040:06:08

-Your eyes are twinkling already.

-Right, teams, time starts now.

0:06:080:06:13

-That's a long list. Let's go.

-It is. Let's go.

0:06:130:06:15

Come on, then. Let's get started.

0:06:150:06:17

-Come on, then.

-Enjoy your shopping, teams.

0:06:170:06:19

Now, if you see anything you fancy, just shout.

0:06:190:06:23

I think we can be sure Mary will do that, Kate,

0:06:230:06:26

and the same can be said for Christine.

0:06:260:06:28

-What's this, Thomas?

-OK, we'll have a look in here.

0:06:280:06:32

-Now, Mary, I can see you're homing in already over here.

-Yes, I am.

0:06:320:06:36

Lovely silver things here. Three of the inkwells there.

0:06:360:06:40

Well, you said you liked inkwells.

0:06:400:06:43

-Yes, but I was thinking of a larger encrier actually.

-Right.

0:06:430:06:46

Mary knows what she likes.

0:06:460:06:48

And Christine likes everything.

0:06:480:06:50

-Just pick one thing you like.

-I like that.

-Good. That's marvellous.

0:06:500:06:54

And I like the baby. Oh, sorry.

0:06:540:06:57

-I can see you're a live one, aren't you?

-She certainly is, Thomas.

0:06:570:07:02

Now, Blues, have you been drawn to sparkly items yet?

0:07:020:07:05

Some quite nice girlie things, Helen, that might be up your street.

0:07:050:07:09

-There's some quite nice costume jewellery.

-Plenty of choice then, ladies.

0:07:090:07:13

-What's Christine found, Thomas?

-1922 silver compact.

0:07:130:07:17

-I think that's rather nice.

-It's a very elegant thing.

-It is elegant.

0:07:170:07:22

And it's pretty. You've got the hallmarks there.

0:07:220:07:26

-Uh-huh.

-Do we know what the hallmark is?

-Do you know the hallmark?

0:07:260:07:29

-It says 1922 on the ticket.

-1922.

-So, it's £69.

0:07:290:07:33

-Yes, that's right.

-I think we ought to ask the gentleman if that's the best price.

0:07:330:07:37

Is this the best price, sir, for this?

0:07:370:07:38

Well, that one actually belongs to a colleague,

0:07:380:07:41

-so I'd have to go and check what the best price is.

-OK.

0:07:410:07:44

-Could you go and ask him for us?

-Yes, certainly. No problem at all.

0:07:440:07:47

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

-So it's a very nice thing.

-It is very nice.

0:07:470:07:50

Could somebody wear that as a pendant?

0:07:500:07:52

-They could wear it as a pendant.

-Yes.

0:07:520:07:54

They could use it as a little pillbox.

0:07:540:07:55

-Yes, this is lovely.

-1922.

-Oh, he's back.

-Hello.

0:07:550:08:00

-What's the verdict, sir?

-I've had a chat with the dealer.

0:08:000:08:03

-His absolute best has got to be 60.

-We'll have it.

0:08:030:08:07

-Yeah, we'll go for it.

-We'll have it.

-Will you?

-Yeah. Thank you.

0:08:070:08:11

-Christine, that's your first item down.

-We have our first item down.

0:08:110:08:14

-That was an executive decision made by you.

-It definitely was.

0:08:140:08:17

-Definitely was.

-It was an executive decision, I agree.

-You agree.

0:08:170:08:20

-I agree.

-Right. Put it down.

0:08:200:08:22

-I think we need to go and find item number two.

-We do.

-Come on.

0:08:220:08:24

-Thank you.

-Off we go. Thank you.

0:08:240:08:26

Definitely an executive decision made by Christine,

0:08:260:08:28

but that's one in the bag, just shy of ten minutes.

0:08:280:08:31

So the Reds wanted jewellery. Are the Blues about to get theirs?

0:08:310:08:36

There's bracelet in there,

0:08:360:08:37

a bangle that looks rather nice in the corner of that cabinet.

0:08:370:08:40

Yes, that does look nice. Can we have a look at that, please?

0:08:400:08:42

-Certainly. It's a Tiffany bracelet.

-It's Tiffany.

-Oh, Tiffany's.

0:08:420:08:47

-Breakfast At Tiffany's.

-Yes.

0:08:470:08:49

So on the outside,

0:08:490:08:51

we've got 1837 engraved in quite an old-fashioned style of engraving.

0:08:510:08:56

On the inside we've got the modern Tiffany mark there.

0:08:560:09:00

"Tiffany & Co."

0:09:000:09:02

The full name, which is nice to see and, "1997,"

0:09:020:09:05

so we know it's a really modern piece.

0:09:050:09:07

What's the best you can do on that for us?

0:09:070:09:10

-To make a fairly good profit at an auction, I'd say 50.

-Right.

0:09:100:09:16

Well, if this didn't have the Tiffany name on it and it was

0:09:160:09:18

just an ordinary silver bracelet,

0:09:180:09:20

I'd probably say about £20 to £30 at auction, if that.

0:09:200:09:23

The Tiffany name stands for a lot, as I'm sure you understand,

0:09:230:09:27

-and it's a good weight.

-It is a good weight, yes.

0:09:270:09:30

-I don't suppose you've got a box for it?

-Erm...

-That would be good.

0:09:300:09:35

Oh, I can see the pale blue. Looking good. Fantastic.

0:09:350:09:39

-Can we have that too?

-Yes.

-So it's got its box. What do we say, guys?

0:09:390:09:45

Is 50 absolutely rock-bottom? I'm just checking. Yeah.

0:09:450:09:49

-What do we think?

-I think it would be good.

-Yes, please.

0:09:490:09:53

You're happy, aren't you?

0:09:530:09:54

I think that's a deal. Thank you very much indeed.

0:09:540:09:57

-Well done, Blues.

-Great. No, you can't take it home.

-Oh!

0:09:570:10:03

Looks like Helen's pleased with the Blue's first buy.

0:10:030:10:07

So with just 15 minutes on the clock,

0:10:070:10:09

neither team is hanging about.

0:10:090:10:11

Now, Thomas appears to have found something

0:10:110:10:13

right up Christine's Street.

0:10:130:10:15

So I've seen something on here which I think we've been looking for.

0:10:150:10:17

-Yes.

-I can see.

-Yes, I can see.

-Yeah.

0:10:170:10:19

-Oh, it's fabulous.

-It is good, isn't it?

0:10:190:10:21

-It is fabulous.

-It is a bunny rabbit.

-Oh, he's so cute!

0:10:210:10:25

-Could it be a hare?

-It could be a hare.

0:10:250:10:26

I think it's a hare with the big ears.

0:10:260:10:28

-It's a hare, isn't it, with the ears?

-Is it OK?

0:10:280:10:30

-How much is it, Thomas?

-£60.

-SHE GASPS

0:10:300:10:32

-Oh, thank you.

-I have to have that.

-£60 on it. It's £60.

0:10:320:10:35

-I have to have it.

-I'm borrowing the gentleman's glass.

0:10:350:10:37

-Oh.

-Yeah, yeah.

-How thoughtful.

0:10:370:10:39

What I'm looking is to see if I can see any strike marks to it

0:10:390:10:42

-or hallmarks.

-A hallmark. Nothing at all?

0:10:420:10:45

-No, there's nothing at all...

-Not even... No?

0:10:450:10:46

No, it could be continental.

0:10:460:10:48

If this was solid silver and British hallmarks,

0:10:480:10:51

it would be £150.

0:10:510:10:52

-If only, if only.

-If only.

-If only.

0:10:520:10:55

-But it's not, it's what it is.

-He's cute.

0:10:550:10:57

-I think he's rather handsome.

-He is, he's lovely.

0:10:570:10:59

-He is so cute.

-You can't stop her, can you?

0:10:590:11:02

He's so cute. Look at his ears.

0:11:020:11:04

-Oh, look at that.

-He's lovely.

0:11:040:11:06

-Isn't he lovely? Hello.

-Hello.

0:11:060:11:08

Hi. Your little... Your little hare.

0:11:080:11:11

-He isn't silver, he's silver plate.

-It's silver.

0:11:110:11:13

It's a French one, it's not an English one.

0:11:130:11:15

-Oh, is it?

-He's lovely.

0:11:150:11:18

-You've got 60 on it.

-35.

0:11:180:11:21

-Would you do him for 30 for us?

-35.

-30?

0:11:210:11:24

-I can't.

-You can't do it for 30.

-I can't, I'm afraid.

0:11:240:11:27

-She's almost taken half off!

-Yes, she has.

0:11:270:11:29

-We'll have him for 35.

-Another executive decision.

-Yes.

0:11:290:11:32

-35. I agree, I agree.

-Is that OK, Michael? Well done.

0:11:320:11:34

-That's fine by me. Yeah...

-Yes.

0:11:340:11:36

Thank you, madam. Thank you.

0:11:360:11:38

-Mike...?

-Merci beaucoup.

-Merci, madame.

0:11:380:11:41

-You have to buy something now, darling...

-I will.

-..that you like.

0:11:410:11:44

I will, definitely.

0:11:440:11:45

If he's allowed! Remember, Mike wanted to find something maritime.

0:11:450:11:49

With two items down in 17 minutes, Reds, are you enjoying it?

0:11:490:11:53

I think things are going really well, to be honest with you.

0:11:530:11:55

-Really well.

-I didn't think we'd have two down in 17 minutes.

0:11:550:11:59

Hm, impressive stuff.

0:11:590:12:00

Whilst we leave the teams to it,

0:12:000:12:02

I'm going to show you an item I found at the fair.

0:12:020:12:05

Now, I could ask you what on earth is this?

0:12:090:12:12

But I think you'll all know that it's a cheese dome.

0:12:120:12:15

But I will ask you have you ever seen a cheese dome as big as this?

0:12:150:12:22

Because I certainly haven't.

0:12:220:12:23

Now, what we want to know is who it's by.

0:12:230:12:26

I had an inkling that this would be by Linthorpe.

0:12:260:12:29

I checked the base... Phew, I was right!

0:12:290:12:32

But what I wanted to see wasn't there.

0:12:320:12:34

I wanted to see the letters CHR Dresser

0:12:340:12:38

and that would have meant it was designed by Christopher Dresser -

0:12:380:12:42

that great Glaswegian designer.

0:12:420:12:45

It's not by Dresser, but it's very much in his style.

0:12:450:12:48

What hallmark does it bear that makes me think that?

0:12:480:12:51

Well, first of all, I'm looking straight at those handles

0:12:510:12:54

because with Christopher Dresser it's all about the handles.

0:12:540:12:57

What else makes me think of Dresser?

0:12:570:13:00

Well, this gorgeous honeysuckle design that encompasses

0:13:000:13:03

the whole dome and the base

0:13:030:13:05

because Christopher Dresser was not only a designer,

0:13:050:13:08

he was also a keen botanist.

0:13:080:13:10

So I am quite surprised this wasn't designed by the man himself.

0:13:100:13:14

But I do know that it was designed after 1882.

0:13:140:13:18

And how do I know that? Well, I'll tell you in a minute.

0:13:180:13:21

Another thing I want to focus on just before we flip it over

0:13:210:13:24

is this gorgeous mustered glaze.

0:13:240:13:27

That's what caught my eye because this was a colour that Dresser loved

0:13:270:13:33

to use for his Linthorpe designs.

0:13:330:13:35

How do I know it's not him? I promised I'd show you, so I will.

0:13:350:13:40

On the base here it's incised "Linthorpe."

0:13:400:13:44

If you see a little bit of Linthorpe, and you see

0:13:440:13:47

a bowl in the incised signature at the bottom,

0:13:470:13:50

then you know that this was incised

0:13:500:13:53

after Christopher Dresser left the company in 1882.

0:13:530:13:58

As an homage to Dresser, we see this lovely bowl,

0:13:580:14:01

but gone is the designer himself.

0:14:010:14:04

So what's it worth?

0:14:040:14:06

Well, the gentleman manning the stall has a sticker of 180.

0:14:060:14:10

So, in true Bargain Hunt style, I had a haggle,

0:14:100:14:13

and he said he'd sell it to me for 160,

0:14:130:14:15

which was music to my ears

0:14:150:14:18

because I reckon that in a specialist Aesthetic style sale,

0:14:180:14:22

this piece in the style of Dresser would have an estimate of £2-300.

0:14:220:14:26

Well, it might not exceed the top end of the estimate but

0:14:280:14:31

believe me, if you walked into any auction house with a cheese dome

0:14:310:14:35

like this, you would be the big cheese yourself.

0:14:350:14:38

Back to it and we're approaching the halfway mark.

0:14:450:14:48

The Blues already have one item but the Reds have bought two in

0:14:480:14:51

just 17 minutes. Thomas, are you having fun?

0:14:510:14:54

These two are amazing.

0:14:540:14:56

However, there is one force of nature here which is not

0:14:560:15:00

going to be stopped.

0:15:000:15:02

Christine is bulldozing poor old Mike.

0:15:020:15:05

Mike, I don't think he's said more than ten words to me yet.

0:15:050:15:08

This next purchase, our third and final,

0:15:080:15:11

is going to be all about him

0:15:110:15:13

and us men have to gang up against Christine

0:15:130:15:16

and I'd better go and save him.

0:15:160:15:17

Yes, I'll be interested to see how that's going to work.

0:15:170:15:20

Mike, this doesn't look very maritime.

0:15:200:15:22

-What are you doing?

-Hi, Thomas. Hi.

0:15:220:15:24

-What are you doing?

-I'm nosey...

0:15:240:15:25

I thought this was Mike's choice.

0:15:250:15:27

It's supposed to be my choice, isn't it?

0:15:270:15:29

Well, we do like the same things.

0:15:290:15:31

-It's supposed to be my choice.

-Don't you, Mike?!

0:15:310:15:34

-We're looking for something maritime.

-Maritime...

0:15:340:15:37

-Give poor Michael a chance.

-Well, yes...

0:15:370:15:39

-It's your chance now.

-Thank you very much.

0:15:390:15:41

-I'm very grateful.

-Whatever you like...

0:15:410:15:43

-Whatever you like, we'll buy.

-As long as it's OK with you.

0:15:430:15:45

-What about..?

-Within reason!

-Within reason?! Off you go.

-Right.

-Come on.

0:15:450:15:49

Boys, Christine is running rings around you.

0:15:490:15:52

Good luck, Mike. So have the Blues sniffed our their second buy yet?

0:15:520:15:56

We've got scent bottles, Helen. You said you liked scent bottles.

0:15:560:15:59

I'm just looking at the top at the Sabino Glass, Helen.

0:15:590:16:02

-Do you like those?

-Yes, they're pretty.

0:16:020:16:05

What are we looking at in terms of price for the Sabino scent bottles?

0:16:050:16:08

The one at the back there.

0:16:080:16:11

Well, the price on it is 130.

0:16:110:16:13

-It's signed Sabino.

-Right.

0:16:130:16:16

-My absolute best on that would be a straight 100...

-Right.

0:16:160:16:19

..that's the death on that.

0:16:190:16:20

I'm going to pick this one up, if I may, madam?

0:16:200:16:23

-Is it all perfect, as far as you know?

-As far as I know.

-Yep.

0:16:230:16:26

-You're welcome to check.

-So this is lovely.

0:16:260:16:29

These, sort of, swags, are very Art Nouveau, aren't they?

0:16:290:16:32

It's just a great colour, isn't it?

0:16:320:16:34

-I think it's lovely.

-Would you have it on a dressing table, Mary?

-Yes.

0:16:340:16:38

We can't push you just a tiny bit more under the 100?

0:16:380:16:41

95, but that would absolutely be it.

0:16:410:16:45

OK, thank you very much.

0:16:450:16:47

What about the other scent bottle, Blues?

0:16:470:16:49

This one might be slightly cheaper.

0:16:490:16:51

What you think, Helen. You have a little look.

0:16:510:16:54

-I like that.

-80...?

-85.

-85.

0:16:540:16:57

So we've got the choice of this one at 85 or the larger one at 95.

0:16:570:17:02

-I have to say, I think the larger makes a better statement.

-Yes.

0:17:020:17:05

-Do you agree, Helen?

-Yes, I agree.

0:17:050:17:07

And for only £10 more, there's a lot more of it.

0:17:070:17:10

-You're right. Shall we go for it and take that larger one?

-Yes, OK.

0:17:100:17:13

-I think you've got a deal, madam.

-Wonderful.

-Thank you very much.

0:17:130:17:16

-Lovely.

-I'll wrap it...

-Great. Thank you. Super. Full steam ahead.

0:17:160:17:21

Full steam ahead, indeed.

0:17:210:17:22

Second item for the Blues in 35 minutes.

0:17:220:17:25

So both teams need one more item. Mike, are you getting a look in?

0:17:250:17:29

A 19th century... You're almost there, Christine. Yeah, OK...

0:17:290:17:33

-Thank you.

-Oh, sorry.

-I like that.

-Do you like that?

0:17:330:17:36

-Yeah, I like that.

-It's...

-You like that?

0:17:360:17:38

-Can I have a look?

-Yes, of course. Please do.

-I like that.

0:17:380:17:41

-Look at the way that's turned.

-It's beautifully turned.

0:17:420:17:45

-That's beautiful. That's lovely.

-A 19th century child's toy.

0:17:450:17:48

-Do you like that, Mike?

-I'm not so keen on the price.

-No.

0:17:480:17:50

Do you want to go and have a chat with him?

0:17:500:17:52

-All right, what is the mark? What's it marked as?

-It's £120.

0:17:520:17:55

-It's £120. There we go. I love it.

-Mike, do you want to go and have a chat with the man?

0:17:550:17:58

-Go and have a chat...

-Where is he? Where's the man?

-See what you can do.

0:17:580:18:01

Let Mike have a word, Christine.

0:18:010:18:02

-I like it very much.

-Yeah.

-I'm not so keen on the price though.

0:18:020:18:05

-Yeah, I know. This is the thing, isn't it?

-I'm not so keen...

0:18:050:18:07

This is the thing, I'm going to have to look at the stock number and I'll find out what it cost me.

0:18:070:18:11

-I'll go and have a look.

-OK, thank you.

-BOTH: Thank you.

0:18:110:18:15

-You've got to put this in context.

-Yes.

0:18:150:18:17

A child in the mid-19th century...

0:18:170:18:19

In the Victorian period children were precious.

0:18:190:18:22

-They were precious.

-Exactly.

-Yes.

0:18:220:18:23

There were lots of childhood illnesses and some didn't survive.

0:18:230:18:27

Toys were expensive things and this would have been

0:18:270:18:30

an expensive toy to make because it's carved out of such a hard wood.

0:18:300:18:34

Right, the best I can do it is £95.

0:18:340:18:38

-95?

-Yes, 95.

0:18:380:18:40

Could you do a little bit less than 95? Could you make it 90?

0:18:400:18:44

No, I can't. I can't. Honestly, I can't.

0:18:440:18:46

- I wouldn't normally quote 95. - All right.

0:18:460:18:47

-He's tried.

-It's very...

0:18:470:18:48

-It's very nice. You like it.

-I think we'll go for it.

0:18:480:18:51

-You have to buy something that you like.

-Thank you very much, sir.

0:18:510:18:54

-It's a pleasure.

-A real pleasure.

-I wish you well.

-Thank you.

0:18:540:18:57

-Thank you, sir.

-I hope you've enjoyed yourself.

0:18:570:19:00

-Oh, we have. We've had a ball.

-Thank you very much.

0:19:000:19:02

-That's it, third and final item done.

-Done. Fantastic.

-Done.

0:19:020:19:05

-Fantastic!

-Fantastic.

-You are fabulous.

0:19:050:19:07

Do you know what? I now need a cup of tea. Come on, let's go.

0:19:070:19:10

I should think you do, Thomas.

0:19:100:19:13

So in 40 minutes, that's the job done for the Reds

0:19:130:19:16

but I'm not convinced it was entirely Mike's choice.

0:19:160:19:20

So, Blues, it's over to you.

0:19:200:19:22

Helen, what have you spotted?

0:19:220:19:24

Look at it, our little pug dog there.

0:19:240:19:25

They seem to be all the fashion all at the moment.

0:19:250:19:28

He's quite sweet, isn't he?

0:19:280:19:29

Let me reach in and have a closer look at him.

0:19:290:19:32

Well, we've got a factory mark on his tummy.

0:19:330:19:36

-A Beswick.

-A Beswick, indeed.

0:19:360:19:38

I can tell by that shape, I think he's probably '50s in date.

0:19:380:19:44

The thing about these Beswick models

0:19:440:19:46

-is you've just got to check the condition.

-BOTH: Yes.

0:19:460:19:49

Hi there. Hi. How much is he?

0:19:490:19:51

-We wanted 25 for him.

-25.

0:19:510:19:53

-Is that the absolute bottom?

-That is, yes.

-Yeah...

0:19:530:19:56

-Even for the Blue team?

-Even for the Blue Team. I'm sorry, yes.

0:19:560:19:59

At auction, they vary from sort of £15-£25

0:19:590:20:03

so we're probably about on the money.

0:20:030:20:05

But you never know, we might have a real pug dog lover.

0:20:050:20:09

You're not sure about this one, are you?

0:20:090:20:11

I'm a bit nervous that he's already at his peak and we won't get

0:20:110:20:13

-any more for him.

-You've peaked, pug.

-You've peaked!

0:20:130:20:16

Helen thinks so, anyway. But you quite like him, Mary?

0:20:160:20:20

-Yes, I think he's lovely.

-Right, let's put him back then.

0:20:200:20:23

Shall we have a quick look, and then we can always come back?

0:20:230:20:25

All right, let's do that.

0:20:250:20:27

Helen's not convinced they're barking up the right tree.

0:20:270:20:30

See what else she can find in the remaining 15 minutes.

0:20:300:20:33

Thomas, are you feeling a bit shellshocked?

0:20:330:20:36

I don't think I'm going to recover

0:20:360:20:38

from this experience for a very long time.

0:20:380:20:40

You two have been totally marvellous.

0:20:400:20:44

Absolutely brilliant.

0:20:440:20:45

So I salute you with a good slurp of coffee.

0:20:450:20:48

-You're having tea.

-Cheers!

-Cheers.

0:20:480:20:51

Cheers, Reds. Blues, is this worth an investment? Ten minutes left.

0:20:510:20:55

I quite like the look of this, ladies.

0:20:550:20:57

I'm conscious we really are tight for time.

0:20:570:21:00

Let's have a very quick look at this. Do you know what this is?

0:21:000:21:03

-A vesta case.

-You've got it, it's a vesta case

0:21:030:21:05

and it's actually for matches.

0:21:050:21:07

And it would've been worn on a gentleman's watch chain,

0:21:070:21:10

that's right. So he had his matches ready to strike,

0:21:100:21:12

light has pipe, or whatever he wanted to do.

0:21:120:21:15

They're always hallmarked just on the inside, here.

0:21:150:21:18

And you can see that's a really nice, period one.

0:21:180:21:20

I think that's probably Victorian, isn't it, sir? Yep.

0:21:200:21:23

And we've got some nice engraving in the silver.

0:21:230:21:26

The hinge is in good condition. And if he'll give us a good price...

0:21:260:21:30

I'm just smiling sweetly at him.

0:21:300:21:32

..that might be something that collectors

0:21:320:21:34

might go for at our auction. What could you do for us on that?

0:21:340:21:38

You can have it for 20.

0:21:380:21:40

For 20. I would say, ladies, these make anything from £15-£30.

0:21:400:21:47

Could you tuck it just under the 20 so that it sounds better for us?

0:21:470:21:51

- 19.50. - 19.99!

0:21:520:21:55

-£19 is the very best.

-Thank you very much.

0:21:550:21:59

-And think it could be a good buy for £19.

-Do you, Mary?

0:21:590:22:02

Yes, I think we should perhaps go for that. What about you?

0:22:020:22:05

Yes, it's pretty.

0:22:050:22:06

-So we're not having the little dog, we're happy with this?

-Yes.

0:22:060:22:11

Good decision. We'll do it. Thank you, sir. With minutes to go.

0:22:110:22:14

ALARM CLOCKS RING Well, that's it, time is up.

0:22:140:22:17

-Are you happy?

-Yes, I am.

-Are you happy, Mary?

-Very happy.

-Well done.

0:22:170:22:20

I think we all deserve a sit down and a nice cup of tea.

0:22:200:22:23

Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:22:230:22:26

First up, the Reds are hoping for a pretty profit

0:22:260:22:29

with this compact, bought for £60.

0:22:290:22:31

Next, they hopped on and bought this hare pincushion for £35.

0:22:340:22:38

And finally, will it be game, set and match

0:22:390:22:42

with this bilboquet, bought for £95?

0:22:420:22:45

Well, it was coffee that brought you together 55 years ago.

0:22:450:22:48

And here we are, having a cup of tea on Bargain Hunt.

0:22:480:22:51

With time to spare. Well done!

0:22:510:22:54

So, out of all the three items, Christine, which is your favourite?

0:22:540:22:57

It has to be the hare pincushion, it's beautiful.

0:22:570:23:00

And do you think it's going to be the hare

0:23:000:23:02

-that brings the biggest profit?

-I think so, yes.

0:23:020:23:04

So, Mike, this is your chance to start talking.

0:23:040:23:07

Tell me, which was your favourite item?

0:23:070:23:09

My favourite item, without doubt, was the Queen Victorian toy.

0:23:090:23:12

-Do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?

-I certainly do.

0:23:120:23:15

I think it will bring the biggest profit.

0:23:150:23:17

I'm quite proud of you two as well, because not only did you get

0:23:170:23:20

that done so quickly, you did spend quite a chunk of the money, £190.

0:23:200:23:25

-We did!

-So, let me guess, Christine, do you have the leftover money?

0:23:250:23:29

-Yeah, of course she does!

-Let me check that!

0:23:290:23:32

Let me take it from you. 110.

0:23:320:23:35

Thomas, there's £110.

0:23:350:23:37

I'm going to balance it up.

0:23:370:23:39

I'm going to buy something masculine and male for my friend, Mike!

0:23:390:23:43

-That's brilliant.

-OK!

0:23:430:23:45

I'll be forever grateful.

0:23:450:23:46

So while Thomas goes and finds something for the boys,

0:23:460:23:49

let's go and see what those Blues bought.

0:23:490:23:51

The Blues both wanted to buy some jewellery,

0:23:530:23:55

and settled on this Tiffany bracelet for £50.

0:23:550:23:58

Next up, can they smell a profit with this scent bottle,

0:24:000:24:03

bought for £95?

0:24:030:24:04

And finally, they invested £19 of their budget on this vesta case.

0:24:060:24:11

Well done, Mary and Helen,

0:24:110:24:12

-you really used the whole hour, didn't you?

-Oh, yes!

0:24:120:24:15

You managed to get three items, kind of what you were looking for.

0:24:150:24:18

Which was your favourite, Mary, of the three?

0:24:180:24:20

-Mine was the perfume bottle.

-Perfume bottle, so gorgeous, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:24:200:24:24

Do you think, when we get to Cardiff for the auction,

0:24:240:24:26

that's going to bring the biggest profit, or maybe one of the others?

0:24:260:24:29

I think, perhaps, the vesta case might make the most profit,

0:24:290:24:33

-because they seem very popular at the sales.

-They are, aren't they?

0:24:330:24:35

And what about you, Helen? I think you have a different favourite.

0:24:350:24:38

Yes, the Tiffany bracelet!

0:24:380:24:39

-The Tiffany bracelet, right up your street.

-Oh, it was, yes!

0:24:390:24:42

-But is it going to bring the biggest profit?

-Of course!

-Oh, you think so?

0:24:420:24:45

-Yes!

-OK!

0:24:450:24:46

You only spent £164.

0:24:460:24:50

So, Mary, you've got £136 in your pocket.

0:24:500:24:52

Am I going to have to prise it from you,

0:24:520:24:55

or are you handing it over willingly?

0:24:550:24:57

There we are! Thank you.

0:24:570:24:59

-Don't worry, it doesn't stay with me for long, it goes to Kate.

-Great.

0:24:590:25:01

-And that's a lot of money.

-It is.

0:25:010:25:04

Is it going to be an inkstand, then, Kate?

0:25:040:25:06

Well, I've got to find the right one first. I'll do my best, Mary.

0:25:060:25:10

-Oh, thank you.

-A bit more Tiffany?

0:25:100:25:12

I'm going to be hard pushed to please you both, aren't I?

0:25:120:25:15

Yes, very hard.

0:25:150:25:16

Well, Kate's got her work cut out,

0:25:160:25:18

but let's see if it all pays off as we head to Cardiff for the auction.

0:25:180:25:21

I've travelled south, and here I am in Cardiff at Rogers Jones,

0:25:290:25:33

and I'm sitting with Ben Rogers Jones, auctioneer for the day.

0:25:330:25:37

-Hello to you, Ben.

-Hello.

0:25:370:25:38

Thank you for having us along.

0:25:380:25:39

We're going to start with our Red team, Christine and Mike.

0:25:390:25:43

We've got a compact here with guilloche enamel.

0:25:430:25:45

It's silver, it's hallmarked, it's looped for suspension -

0:25:450:25:48

-so, what do you think?

-Rather a plain Jane, if I must say so.

0:25:480:25:52

And a little bit dented on the side there, as you can see.

0:25:520:25:56

It's a fair enough piece. I mean, there are lots of them around.

0:25:560:25:59

It probably would have been part of a set.

0:25:590:26:02

I've got to be fairly modest with my estimate, £10-15.

0:26:020:26:06

Well, Christine, who chose the compact,

0:26:060:26:08

won't be happy with that, because they paid £60 for it.

0:26:080:26:11

But let's move on to item number two,

0:26:110:26:13

which is, in fact, Christine's favourite - this novelty pincushion.

0:26:130:26:18

Now, are you quite confident that this is silver?

0:26:180:26:21

-I'm fairly convinced that it's silver.

-OK, great.

0:26:210:26:25

It's unhallmarked, which may cast a doubt in some collectors' minds.

0:26:250:26:29

Do you reckon some hands are going to leap up in the saleroom?

0:26:290:26:31

I think we'll have some competition for it.

0:26:310:26:33

-I've put an estimate of £30-40 on it.

-OK.

0:26:330:26:37

As I say, Christine loved it, had to have it. She paid £35 for it.

0:26:370:26:41

I reckon everyone was quite happy with that.

0:26:410:26:43

That was Christine's favourite item. This is Mike's favourite item.

0:26:430:26:47

This ballgame here.

0:26:470:26:49

What do you think of it? Because he adored it.

0:26:490:26:53

This is the famous French game of bilboquet. It's nicely turned.

0:26:530:26:58

It's got age. There are a few of these around,

0:26:580:27:02

often they came in sets, or compendiums, of games.

0:27:020:27:06

It's on its own. I think, estimate-wise, £30-40.

0:27:060:27:10

OK, can't do any better? Can't tempt you to raise the estimate a little?

0:27:100:27:14

No, I think computer games have probably superseded the bilboquet,

0:27:140:27:19

so we can't go too strong on it.

0:27:190:27:22

Well, perhaps Mike was a wee bit nostalgic when he went for this one.

0:27:220:27:25

-He paid £95 for it.

-Goodness.

0:27:250:27:29

Well, if the auctioneer's wincing, we might just need the bonus buy,

0:27:290:27:33

so let's find out what Thomas Plant bought for the Reds.

0:27:330:27:36

OK, well, Thomas, show us what you got.

0:27:360:27:39

Well, Mike, this is just for you,

0:27:390:27:42

-I have to say.

-Oh, wow.

0:27:420:27:43

-There it is!

-Oh, wow!

0:27:430:27:45

-It's an anchor!

-There's your anchor.

0:27:450:27:47

-There's your bit of maritime.

-That's brilliant.

-Anchors aweigh, I say!

0:27:470:27:51

Christine, you wouldn't let him buy any maritime, would you?

0:27:510:27:55

-No, I wouldn't.

-No, you wouldn't, so I did it for him!

0:27:550:27:57

-It's a cast-iron anchor from the 1920s, 1930s.

-1920s?

0:27:570:28:01

-Yeah, yeah, it's a French one.

-Oh!

0:28:010:28:04

And I spent the grand total of £35 on it.

0:28:040:28:07

-You didn't!

-I did, I did.

0:28:070:28:10

Well, Mike, he says it's for you, are you impressed?

0:28:100:28:12

I am impressed, yeah. Do you think that'll make us a profit?

0:28:120:28:15

It's going to make a little bit of a profit. It's a garden piece now.

0:28:150:28:18

Definitely do the job, that will.

0:28:180:28:20

You think it'll definitely do the job.

0:28:200:28:21

-Well, those could be famous last words, Mike.

-Could be!

0:28:210:28:24

I've got a sneaky feeling it is going to do the job,

0:28:240:28:26

and we're going to do well with this one.

0:28:260:28:28

This positive attitude is very welcome,

0:28:280:28:30

but don't make up your mind until the auction.

0:28:300:28:32

So, let's head over to our auctioneer to find out what

0:28:320:28:35

he thinks of Thomas' rusty and rustic anchor.

0:28:350:28:40

Here is Thomas' maritime anchor.

0:28:400:28:43

-Wow.

-Tell me, what do you think?

0:28:430:28:45

Right.

0:28:460:28:48

Rusty piece of metal.

0:28:480:28:50

Yes, but it's so nicely modelled...?

0:28:500:28:53

-Or is it?

-Not really.

-Not really?

-No.

0:28:530:28:57

I don't know, there's got to be some positives there.

0:28:570:29:00

I mean, it's interestingly formed, it's obviously seen action,

0:29:000:29:05

if this anchor could talk, what would it say?

0:29:050:29:08

"Glug, glug, glug," perhaps?

0:29:080:29:10

"Help me, take me out of this auction room!"

0:29:100:29:12

But it's got to go somewhere.

0:29:120:29:14

Do you reckon it you've got buyers, maybe interior designers,

0:29:140:29:17

cafe owners, things like that?

0:29:170:29:18

It's difficult to see a purpose for it, really,

0:29:180:29:21

-other than throwing in the sea.

-Well, you don't seem inspired.

0:29:210:29:24

Have you placed an inspiring estimate upon this rusty anchor?

0:29:240:29:28

I've put £15-25 for its scrap value.

0:29:280:29:31

Well, that's all right, it might still swim,

0:29:310:29:34

-because Thomas only paid £35 for it.

-Oh, well...

0:29:340:29:37

So all hope is not lost at the bottom of the sea.

0:29:370:29:40

Now, let's move on to our Blues, Mary and Helen.

0:29:400:29:44

And we'll start off with Helen's absolute favourite,

0:29:440:29:48

this Tiffany silver open bangle.

0:29:480:29:50

Now, do you have a lot of jewellery buyers coming to the sale?

0:29:500:29:53

It's in good company, this bangle,

0:29:530:29:55

there's a lot of jewellery in this sale. I think it'll do quite well.

0:29:550:29:58

-Very commercial.

-Yes.

-At what kind of price?

0:29:580:30:01

-50-80?

-Fantastic. Well, Helen had to have it.

0:30:010:30:04

I think she wanted it for herself, and they paid £50 for it.

0:30:040:30:07

-Oh, there we are.

-So, Mary trusted Helen's taste there,

0:30:070:30:10

and she probably did the right thing.

0:30:100:30:12

Let's move on to Mary's favourite,

0:30:120:30:13

this lovely, moulded, Sabino glass scent bottle.

0:30:130:30:17

You've got to have something good to say about that.

0:30:170:30:19

It's nice - a nice, opalescent bottle.

0:30:190:30:22

Not particularly old, and that's important.

0:30:220:30:25

But rather attractive, and there are collectors for Sabino glass,

0:30:250:30:28

I think it might do well.

0:30:280:30:29

Yeah, and these are very trendy, aren't they, all of a sudden.

0:30:290:30:32

Scent bottles are the thing to have, for the lady has everything.

0:30:320:30:35

Absolutely.

0:30:350:30:36

And what kind of price does the lady who has everything want to pay?

0:30:360:30:40

£30-40.

0:30:400:30:41

Well, these ladies - who have their hopes pinned on this - paid £95!

0:30:410:30:47

Right. Well, there is some interest, so we'll see.

0:30:470:30:50

Might be a little bit rich.

0:30:500:30:52

-OK, so they could come out smelling of roses in the end.

-They might do.

0:30:520:30:56

OK, now we'll move on to this vesta case.

0:30:560:30:59

Mary reckons there's profit to be made in this.

0:30:590:31:01

It is silver. What do you think your buyers are going to make of it?

0:31:010:31:05

If there's one silver item that we see an awful lot of,

0:31:050:31:09

it's vesta cases and cigarette cases.

0:31:090:31:12

There's a huge number of them in the country.

0:31:120:31:15

It doesn't have anything unusual about it.

0:31:150:31:19

It's fairly plain.

0:31:190:31:21

Floral engraved vesta case.

0:31:210:31:23

Can't go to strong on that one, I'm afraid.

0:31:230:31:26

-OK, how strong did you go?

-£20-25.

0:31:260:31:28

Do you know, the ladies fought hard

0:31:280:31:31

for every last pound off of this, and they did get it down to £19.

0:31:310:31:36

Mary reckons the vesta case will bring the biggest profit,

0:31:360:31:39

but perhaps it will be her favourite item, the scent bottle,

0:31:390:31:42

that lets them down.

0:31:420:31:43

So, if it does, they might need to rely on their bonus buy.

0:31:430:31:46

Let's find out what it is.

0:31:460:31:48

Well, Mary and Helen, the shopping's done, but it wasn't over for Kate.

0:31:480:31:52

-She had £136 to spend of your leftover money.

-Yes.

0:31:520:31:57

-So what on Earth did you spend it on?

-Let's see!

0:31:570:32:00

BOTH: Ooh!

0:32:000:32:03

Oh, my favourite, owls!

0:32:030:32:06

-What's it say underneath it?

-That's a good question, Mary.

0:32:060:32:10

We have got a little signature in script there.

0:32:100:32:14

Which says...

0:32:140:32:15

-Lalique.

-Wahey!

0:32:150:32:17

That makes it very special.

0:32:170:32:20

This is a modern piece.

0:32:200:32:22

We can tell really, by the style of it, but also because we've

0:32:220:32:26

got that script signature, we haven't got the initial R.

0:32:260:32:30

So, I paid...

0:32:300:32:32

-£40.

-Ooh!

0:32:320:32:34

That's good, yes.

0:32:340:32:36

What do you think that's going to make for us?

0:32:360:32:38

Well, I've seen these modern pieces at auction, Mary,

0:32:380:32:41

go for £60-70.

0:32:410:32:43

So, if we've got a good buyer here today, it could fetch that much.

0:32:430:32:49

-That would be fine.

-That would be great.

0:32:490:32:51

We'll keep our fingers crossed, but remember, don't make your

0:32:510:32:54

minds up now, it all comes down to how well you're doing at auction.

0:32:540:32:57

So, for now, we'll head back to our auctioneer to see if

0:32:570:33:00

he thinks this owl will turn heads in the saleroom.

0:33:000:33:03

OK, so to add to the glass we already have,

0:33:040:33:07

we've got this Lalique owl.

0:33:070:33:09

Modern as it is, attractive though, surely?

0:33:090:33:11

Oh, it's lovely.

0:33:110:33:13

Lalique is a sign of quality.

0:33:130:33:15

-And owls are favourite birds, aren't they?

-They are!

0:33:150:33:19

-I think this will do well.

-Yeah, you reckon?

0:33:190:33:22

-At what sort of estimate?

-£40-50.

-40-50.

0:33:220:33:25

Let me tell you, Kate Bliss managed to get this very nice,

0:33:250:33:30

modern Lalique owl, for £40 only.

0:33:300:33:32

She must have fought hard.

0:33:320:33:34

So, in that case, I think it's going to be good news all round.

0:33:340:33:38

-I've got a good feeling about today's auction. Have you?

-I have.

0:33:380:33:41

-So, will you be taking to the rostrum today, Ben?

-I will.

0:33:410:33:43

Great, well, I look forward to picking up some tips.

0:33:430:33:45

Let's head there now.

0:33:450:33:47

Right, Mike, Christine, Thomas - here we are.

0:33:510:33:53

-You guys must have been to an auction before?

-No, my first time!

0:33:530:33:57

Now is the time to see how it's done,

0:33:570:33:59

because this is a great auction house.

0:33:590:34:01

As you can see, the room is full.

0:34:010:34:04

-Are you ready for your first lot?

-I'm ready.

-Here it comes.

0:34:040:34:07

174a, a silver and guilloche enamel compact case. Rather nice.

0:34:070:34:12

£30? Bid me 30?

0:34:120:34:14

Bid me 30?

0:34:150:34:17

20 to start?

0:34:170:34:19

20 I have online.

0:34:190:34:21

Come on, come on!

0:34:210:34:23

25? £25?

0:34:230:34:25

Is there 30?

0:34:250:34:26

30 now, is there 5?

0:34:260:34:28

£30, online the bid, anyone in the room?

0:34:280:34:30

-All online.

-All online.

0:34:300:34:32

Online has it then, at £30.

0:34:320:34:34

£30, everyone done?

0:34:340:34:36

Fair warning to you all at 30...?

0:34:360:34:39

-£30.

-Aw!

-You were robbed!

0:34:390:34:41

£30!

0:34:410:34:43

Which means you've lost 30.

0:34:430:34:45

Now, don't worry, we've got two items to go.

0:34:450:34:47

Now it's our novelty pincushion.

0:34:470:34:48

You're £30 under, and you paid £35 for this, so we need a good price.

0:34:480:34:53

Here it comes.

0:34:530:34:54

174b, isn't this lovely?

0:34:540:34:57

The little, silver pincushion in the form of a seated rabbit.

0:34:570:35:00

Start me at £50, 50?

0:35:000:35:03

50 I have.

0:35:030:35:04

Brilliant!

0:35:060:35:07

At £50.

0:35:070:35:09

Any advance now? At £50.

0:35:090:35:11

Anyone in the room, at £50?

0:35:110:35:13

Higher! Come on!

0:35:130:35:16

Everybody done?

0:35:160:35:17

5s if you like, at 50 now.

0:35:170:35:20

Come on, you pincushion collectors!

0:35:200:35:22

Last... 5. 5, just in time.

0:35:220:35:24

-Ooh, 55 is bid.

-55!

0:35:240:35:26

Come on, come on!

0:35:260:35:27

Everybody done?

0:35:270:35:28

Online the bid then, here it goes with 60...

0:35:280:35:32

£60.

0:35:320:35:33

60, well done! It sold for 60, that's exciting.

0:35:330:35:36

That means it made £25,

0:35:360:35:38

and you are now just £5 under.

0:35:380:35:41

174, the turned bilboquet.

0:35:410:35:44

£30, 30?

0:35:440:35:47

-Oh, no!

-Don't worry.

0:35:470:35:50

-Bid me 20?

-Shocked.

0:35:500:35:53

Start me at 10?

0:35:530:35:54

10 bid, 12?

0:35:540:35:56

15? 15.

0:35:560:35:58

18.

0:35:580:36:00

-You're shocked. MIKE:

-I am.

0:36:000:36:02

Come on!

0:36:020:36:03

Either of you at 2?

0:36:030:36:05

£20?

0:36:050:36:06

Come on!

0:36:060:36:08

Is everybody done? At 22, second thoughts there.

0:36:080:36:11

Come on, it's a bargain!

0:36:110:36:13

5 if you like?

0:36:130:36:14

22. At 5. 25?

0:36:140:36:16

-Is there 8? At £25...

-Getting there.

0:36:160:36:19

Well, it's got a long way to go.

0:36:190:36:21

Closing up now, at 25...

0:36:210:36:23

-Aw!

-Oh, £25!

0:36:250:36:27

OK, what does that mean, it means you've lost 70,

0:36:270:36:29

which means you've lost 75 in total.

0:36:290:36:33

Panic not, remember that positive attitude you had a moment ago?

0:36:330:36:37

Bring it back, because maritime is the word of the moment.

0:36:370:36:42

Now you've got to decide, are you going to go with Thomas'

0:36:420:36:45

rusty old anchor?

0:36:450:36:47

Of course, no choice!

0:36:470:36:50

This is it, it's going under the hammer.

0:36:500:36:52

-Great for gardens.

-Great for gardens. Fingers crossed.

0:36:520:36:56

178, the old, iron, maritime anchor.

0:36:560:36:59

I've got a start, it starts with me at £25.

0:36:590:37:04

-Ooh, tell you what.

-Come on.

0:37:040:37:06

30. 35?

0:37:080:37:10

40 if you like?

0:37:100:37:11

35 is with me.

0:37:110:37:13

At £35?

0:37:130:37:14

£35.

0:37:140:37:16

-Goes with your yacht.

-£35.

0:37:160:37:19

It's on the book.

0:37:190:37:20

-Go on, one more.

-Go on!

0:37:200:37:22

Last call then, at £35,

0:37:220:37:24

hammer's up... 35.

0:37:240:37:25

Aw!

0:37:250:37:27

Folks, £35 it sold for, and that's what Thomas paid for it.

0:37:270:37:31

Which means it's broken even,

0:37:310:37:34

and you have finished Bargain Hunt £75 under.

0:37:340:37:38

How are you feeling, ladies, now that we're standing here?

0:37:440:37:47

Excited, very excited.

0:37:470:37:49

-Excited, Helen?

-Nervous!

-Yeah!

0:37:490:37:52

-A bit less confident, maybe?

-Yes!

0:37:520:37:53

-I can feel it, you're jittering.

-I can't keep still!

0:37:530:37:56

But it is exciting. I tell you what's even more exciting,

0:37:560:37:59

is your favourite lot's going under the hammer right now,

0:37:590:38:01

0:38:010:38:04

193a is the modern, boxed Tiffany silver open bangle. Rather nice.

0:39:250:39:26

It sold for 90, you lost a fiver, you're still 75 in front.

0:39:260:39:31

That's actually not bad. Aw, we were so close.

0:39:310:39:34

Here we have Kate's choice, this lovely vesta case,

0:39:340:39:37

you only paid £19 for it.

0:39:370:39:40

And here it goes under the hammer, ladies, let's keep it up.

0:39:400:39:43

Bright cut, silver vesta case, straight in I go at 15.

0:39:430:39:46

0:40:090:40:12

Ladies, that's profit of 13.

0:40:120:40:14

So, 75 plus 13, £88 profit!

0:40:140:40:18

-I am seriously impressed!

-Oh, that's good.

0:40:180:40:21

It's really good, Mary!

0:40:210:40:23

The question is, are you going to risk your profit and go for the

0:40:230:40:26

bonus buy, or are you going to stick with what you've got?

0:40:260:40:30

I'd like to risk it.

0:40:300:40:32

We'll go with it.

0:40:320:40:33

-You're go to go for it?

-We're going to go for it.

0:40:330:40:36

A lovely Lalique Owl.

0:40:360:40:38

There's good interest in this, it's straight in mid-estimate,

0:40:380:40:41

-Instant profit!

0:40:430:40:45

Ladies, it all weighs in

0:41:100:41:12

at a total of £103!

0:41:120:41:15

How good is that?!

0:41:150:41:17

Ladies, a three-figure sum on Bargain Hunt is no mean feat.

0:41:170:41:21

You should be very proud of yourselves.

0:41:210:41:23

Keep it to yourselves, and we'll soon find out how it all went down.

0:41:230:41:26

-Well, teams, as I remember it, we gave you £300.

-Yes.

0:41:320:41:36

-We gave you 60 minutes.

-Yes.

0:41:360:41:37

-You each bought three items.

-Yes.

0:41:370:41:39

So how come we've got two seriously different results? How can that be?

0:41:390:41:44

-I wonder!

-Because the conditions were the same.

0:41:440:41:46

And yet, today, our Blues are seriously in front,

0:41:460:41:50

well done, you are our winners!

0:41:500:41:53

How did it happen?

0:41:530:41:54

Let's turn to our runners-up today, the Reds.

0:41:540:41:58

Now, the story of your shop was that Christine was very much in charge.

0:41:580:42:01

And Christine was right, because your only item that made a profit

0:42:010:42:05

was the pincushion that Christine predicted would make a profit.

0:42:050:42:09

Well done. You had fun though, didn't you, Mike?

0:42:090:42:12

I enjoyed every minute of it.

0:42:120:42:13

You had a great time, I'm so pleased to hear it.

0:42:130:42:15

But let's turn to the Blue team. Well done.

0:42:150:42:19

Let me tell you, they have won today with £103 profit!

0:42:190:42:25

APPLAUSE

0:42:250:42:27

Very well done.

0:42:270:42:29

Overall, you only lost £5, it was fantastic to watch.

0:42:290:42:33

And, Helen, you're whooping and cheering... It was so good.

0:42:330:42:37

You bought items that you loved, and in the end they made you money.

0:42:370:42:41

So, £103, it's a fantastic sum of money. And who's taking it?

0:42:410:42:45

-Mary, I reckon it's going to be you. There we are.

-Thank you!

0:42:450:42:48

You've got some notes and some coins, so hold on tight!
