Today, I'm in Anglesey, off the north-west coast of Wales. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
And here's a great statistic. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
There are three times the number of sheep in Wales than people. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
MUSIC: Sheep by The Housemartins | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
So you could say it's the perfect place to find a ba-a-a-a-rgain. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:24
What do you think? | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
BAAA! | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27 | |
Let's go bargain hunting! | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
We're at the Mona Showground for today's fair. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
This place is literally brimming with goodies. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Our teams have one hour and ?300 to seek out those bargains. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
The aim is to make a profit at auction. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
Let's see what's coming up. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
The Reds join a fan club... Wow. I'm a big fan of that. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Yeah, I'm a big fan of it. Boom-boom! | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
And the Blues find a friend. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Oh, that's a curly one! Awful! I've never seen a curly hedgehog, though. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
Curly. Yeah! Curly. Curly! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
And drama at the auction. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
Get in! Yes, yes! | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
I'm absolutely staggered. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
?10, for these. Ten, I am bid straight away. Without hesitance. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
That's all for later. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
But now, let's meet today's teams and we have two teams of best pals. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:46
For the Reds, it's Jason and David. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
And for the Blues, Lesley and Lee. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Hello, everyone. ALL: Hello! | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Oh! Yeah, lots of gusto. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Now, Jason, you and David both work in a chemical plant. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
Tell me a little bit about that. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Basically, we make dilithium crystals | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
that goes into the pharmaceutical chain, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
so it is used for kidney dialysis and stuff like that, basically. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
What do you do to de-stress? What sort of hobbies do you have? | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
One of the things I do occasionally is wing walking. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
What is wing walking? OK, so... Wing walking?! | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
So, basically, you strap yourself on top of a plane, about 45 minutes, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:29
up in the air, 150mph, loops and turns and stuff like that. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
Are you telling me that you stand on the outside of a plane... | 0:02:33 | 0:02:39
Yeah. ..which flies in the air? Yeah, yeah. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Is it not a wee bit chilly? It is. You do have to wrap up. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Even on the warmest of days, it can get a bit chilly, yeah. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
It all sounds a bit mad to me. Dave, I believe you have | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
a different type of hobby. You're into metal detecting? | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
Yeah. Tell me about that. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
Well, I've got a friend who took me metal detecting a couple of times | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
and we were out finding different objects | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and we found a Roman coin that he said was quite valuable. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
I put it in my pocket. On the way home, we pulled up for some petrol | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
and I pulled my wallet out and it drops out of my pocket | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
and into a grid, so that was the end of that. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
So, I never got anything for it! I hope you don't drop your money | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
when you're out bargain hunting today! | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
No. Not ?300 worth, no. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
So, you two are best mates, but how are you at bargain hunting? | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
What tactics are you going to use to win the game today? | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
I reckon we are going to go for the shabby chic stuff. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Yeah. We are going to.... Shabby chic! Definitely. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
That's the future. We've seen it and people are into that market. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
And what do you think, Dave? I think a bit of banter | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
with the stallholders and a bit of humour and try | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
and knock them down that way. Get on their side. Not literally! Yeah. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
You've got it all worked out. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
So, that's the Red team. Over to our Blues, Lesley and Lee. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
So, tell me how the two met. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Well, I moved up to Chester a few years ago | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
and renovated a dilapidated old house. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
Lee was one of the builders on site and we just clicked and hit it off. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
And we bonded over a bottle of champagne, really, wasn't it? | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
Yeah, most evenings. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:17
You have an interesting interest. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
You're a hedgehog champion! How do you do that? | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
Oh, I love hedgehogs. They're the most amazing little creatures. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
I started feeding them and then I just got about | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
eight to ten hedgehogs turning up every night. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
Some were injured and had been through the wars, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
so I literally would take them over to the rescue centre | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
and then re-release them in my garden. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
Maybe you'll find something hedgehog-related out there today. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
So, over to Lee. Now, you're a builder. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
I am, yes. Tell me what sort of things you do. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
I like to do restorative sort of things, where you take | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
the old and take it back to how it was when it was first built, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
so it's quite a technical job. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00
I've been working in the trade for now, maybe, six years, | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
but in recent times, I've tried to follow my dreams | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
and become a full-time artist. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:07
So, you're an artist, as well? I am, yes. What sort of style? | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
Very detailed work. Landscapes, portraits, nature. Things like that. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
But it's got to look like it's just been taken a photo of. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
It's got to look very, very detailed. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
What's going to be the plan today, because these guys want to beat you? | 0:05:18 | 0:05:24
We did think, what is our strategy going to be? | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
And that is to get them right down to the baseline that they're | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
prepared to give it to us and then, buy for low and sell for high. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Right, OK. So, you feel that haggling's the thing to do? | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
We do. Absolutely. Haggling! | 0:05:36 | 0:05:37
That's it. Well, that sounds like a brilliant plan. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:42
Better give you some money. ?300 for the Blues | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
and ?300 for the Reds. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Your experts await, so off you go. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
Both these teams fancy their chances today. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
We're in for a great competition! | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Our competitive teams need a couple of very talented experts. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
Pulling the strings for the Reds, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
it's Caroline Hawley. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
And he's a wise old owl. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
For the Blues, it's Philip Serrell. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
Hey, guys! Come on! What are you looking for? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
Something cheap. Something cheap. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
Is there any plan, at all? | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
I think we're going to walk around, see what we like, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
find something rare or unusual. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
Something retro. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:27
Something... Yeah, something that's | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
got something about it that stands out. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Well, I like small, shiny, unusual, | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
unique items that we can buy quite low and sell high. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:38
Both teams know what they're looking for. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
That's a good start. So let competition commence! | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
OK, teams, time to cut a deal. Your 60 minutes start now. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
OLD-FASHIONED CAR HORN HONKS | 0:06:48 | 0:06:49
That sounds like a plan to me. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
Shall we go and find some cheap retro? That's what we need. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
There's plenty to choose from | 0:06:55 | 0:06:56
and the Blues are onto something already. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
Let's go and have a look at this stall. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
That's quite fun, isn't it? How much is he? | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
295. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:04 | |
PHILIP WHISTLES | 0:07:04 | 0:07:05
Ouch! That is certainly unique, but too much money. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
And the Reds seem a bit confused. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
What's going to make us some money? What's retro and...? | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
What's us, Dave? I mean... | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
I don't know. No. There's a retro radio. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
Yeah, I think it's more new than retro, that thing. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
Are the Blues faring any better? | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
I quite like that propeller. I like that. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
It doesn't look particularly old to me or very... | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
Yeah, but I don't, do I? Do I? Do I? I don't look old, do I? | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
No. Thank you. The thing is, I suspect the ends | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
might have been cut off it a little bit. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
Hmm. And you're right, it hasn't got great age. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
I would think that's probably '50s. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
Yeah. But you don't like it? Full stop, end of? | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
No, not for that price. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
Thanks very much indeed. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
Lee is very decisive. I like his style. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
So, time to move on. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:52
But how decisive are the Reds? | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Is there anything in this cabinet that you've spotted? | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
There's some nice silver cuff links. 1964. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
Now, those are quite modern. Would you wear something like that? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
Definitely got a bit of a flair to them, haven't they, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
in terms of the design? | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
Yeah, you could see them with the flares. You can. Boom-boom! | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
Flared trousers and big collars. There you go. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
You'd be all right, then. I would, yeah, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
I offer wear a decent pair of flares on a night out. Do you? | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
I do, yeah. I can see it now. Will we have a little look at them? | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
We can do, yeah, if you want to have a look at them. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
They look like they're in good condition, don't they? 1964. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
So, yeah. Right. The hallmark is... | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Let's just have a look. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
Yeah, there's the hallmark. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
So, the hallmark tells you that's real silver, does it? Yeah. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
British sterling silver. OK. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
And you have got the leopard's head, for London. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
You have got three little boxes and, if I look with that, yeah, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:54
it is, indeed, the leopard's head. The small "i", all in little boxes. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
And it's the style of the box, as well, that you have to look at. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
And they're nice quality and this decoration is very... | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
It's almost psychedelic. It is and it will go. It can... '60s. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
So what do you think that would get at auction? | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
Well, I think they need to be less than that, to make a profit. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
Well, ask the gentleman his best price. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
Have we got a best price for that? Best price. The very best price | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
I can do is 24. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:19
24? Mm... Don't know about that. There's not much room for profit | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
on that, though, is there? Is it something we could come back to? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Do you want to come back to that? Yeah, I think so. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
I'll hold on to it for you, for a little while. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
- OK, thank you. Thank you. Right, guys, | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
remember where they are, when we come back. Yeah. OK? | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
Brilliant. Come on. Let's go. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
So the decision is to put it on the back burner and keep hunting. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
But it looks like the Blues have spotted something. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Do you like the look of that? | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
I do, actually, yeah. Let's have a look at it. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
Do you want to grab it? That's good. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
So, this is... It's like a barrel, isn't it? | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
This is probably silver-plated. It's very much between the wars. Yep. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:59
And how much is that? | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
25. 25 quid? Would you like that? How heavy is it? | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
Oh, I think that's really nice. I think it's a decent weight. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
Quite a cool thing, isn't it? Yeah. It's very tangible, the wood. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Yeah. It's well made. It feels good like that. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
Won't that look good on a table? It will. Really, really good. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
Hopefully, on somebody else's table. Well, mine. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
It's a really cool thing. What do you reckon? | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
Obviously, I like it, cos my surname's Cooper | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
and coopers are barrel makers. Well, there you are. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
A cooper barrel. If ever there was an omen for buying a lot, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
that's it. That's it. What's the best you can give us for this? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
Nice bit. ?15. ?15? No less. I'm not saying a word here. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:40
?10 off. 15, to go. Will you take 13? | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Afraid not. It's got to be 15. 14? 15, yeah. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
You're the deciding vote. It's one cheap item. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
Let's go for it. And it is a cooper pot. Thank you very much. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
You happy with that. Yes, I am, thank you. Thank you very much. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
The stallholder stuck to his guns, but that's a good price. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
Ten minutes in, the Blues are storming ahead. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
But how are the Reds getting on? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
They are a bit overwhelmed. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
You want it to jump out and grab you, don't you? | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
I do, yeah. It's just... a feeling. The passion! Yeah. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
I'll know it when I see it. Right, well, you've got 40 minutes | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
to know it! Right. Not a problem. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
But hang on a minute, something has caught their attention. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
What about that, there, Jase? | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
Oh, yeah. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:29
Hey, what have you found? | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
It's definitely jumped out on us. It's something I mentioned earlier, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
we were after something that was shabby chic and, guess what? | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
It's shabby chic! That is exactly what you were talking about. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
The shabby chic, with the painting, the rubbing through. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
And also, it would go nicely on somebody's dressing table, | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
I think. Keep all your trinkets in there. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
Did it jump out at you? Or did you jump on it? | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
You could say it jumped out on me, yeah. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:57
So, how much did it tell you it is, this delightful piece? | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
About ?28. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
Did it?! It did. Oh, yeah! | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
Right. I think, if we can chop that down a bit... | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
Chop it down to what? Shall we say... 20-ish. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
20-ish? Yeah. If we can get ?10 off that, we're in. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
I think you'd get 30-odd quid for that. Do we find the owner? | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
Yep. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:20 | |
Priced up at ?28. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
I'll do it for 25. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
How about 20? | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
21, how's that? 21. 21. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
21 is a fair price. Yeah, I'll go for that. Yeah. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
21, it is. Yeah, OK? It's a pleasure. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
Thank you. Oh, well done. That's their first buy. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
Thank you, sir. You're welcome. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
Fantastic. Finally, one item is in the bag, | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
but time is ticking and time for Caroline to have a word. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
We've got 32 minutes gone, 28 minutes to go | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
and we've got one buy. What about the cuff links? | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
Yeah, we quite like the cuff links, don't we? | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
Yeah, we could go back to the cuff links. | 0:12:58 | 0:12:59
Keep looking. Yeah. And then go back, is that what you're saying? | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
Yeah. Right, where do you want to go now? That way. That way? | 0:13:03 | 0:13:08
Right, come on, then! That way it is! | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
Decision made. That's what I like to see. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
And while both teams keep searching, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
I've been doing a little browsing myself. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
You never know what you might find and I've spotted something | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
that makes use of that fine Welsh wool. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
You know you're in Wales when you come across these | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
traditional Welsh blankets. But I've noticed a lot of fairs | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
are selling them, so what's the story behind them? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
150 years ago, almost every Welsh home had one of these. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:39
They were used as bed covers, but also as rugs and curtains. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:44
The very early ones were plain, but the Victorian ones had | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
a slightly different pattern on each side, often with long fringes. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:54
They were double weave and extremely hard wearing. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
Often a young bride would receive one and these would | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
become a treasured family heirloom. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:06
These single weave blankets were made between | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
the 1940s and the 1970s. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
But by the 1970s, duvets were becoming fashionable | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
and many of these wonderful blankets were thrown out, as worthless. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
But they have become fashionable again, but what do they cost? | 0:14:21 | 0:14:27
Well, an original blanket from the 1940s, like this one here, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:32
would cost round about ?80, depending on size and condition. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:37
But here's something to look out for - | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
the original label of the woollen mill where they were made. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
This blanket is made by Derw, which means "oak", | 0:14:45 | 0:14:50
and the collectors will love to see that label. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
The very early blankets, like this one here, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:58
which is a wonderful Victorian example, can cost upwards of ?300. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:04
I love these wonderful Welsh blankets and I have some at home. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:10
But a little bird told me that when the Duchess of Cambridge | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
lived in Anglesey, she bought one of these as a cot blanket. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:18
So, not only are they very fashionable, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
they are fit for royalty! | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
Time to get back to our teams. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
They are halfway through shopping and have one item each | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
and it looks like the Blues are finally in agreement. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
I like this on the wall. I quite like that, at the end. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
Yeah. What, you both like the same thing? Shock horror! | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
Shock horror! Absolutely. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
Is there a chair? I need a bed, I think! | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Can you pass it over? What is it? | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
Looks like a wall sconce, isn't it? A sconce, yeah. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
It looks like it used to be electrified. ?45 on that. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
It's a light fitting? Yeah. I would think that's been put on that later. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
Yes. It originally, perhaps, had a candle stand on there. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:06
Yeah. But I quite like that. It hasn't been polished | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
or tried to be cleaned. It just looks like old | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
and you just stick it on the wall as it is. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
And it's of that Arts and Crafts period. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
It's got a nice look to it, hasn't it? | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
The purpose of light is to light a room and one of the ways you could | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
double the light in a room is to use a mirror | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
or a piece of highly-polished metal, because it reflected the light. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
So, I think that's a really cool thing. I quite like that. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
So, how old do you think it is? | 0:16:29 | 0:16:30
I would think it's early 20th century. How much is that? 45. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:35
What would you say it would make at auction? | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
I would think it is between ?30 and ?50. Right. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
But remember, these guys have got to make a living, | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
they've got to eat. Yeah, they have. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
So, you know, don't be too hard on the negotiations. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
But do you like that? I really like this, but maybe for about ?15. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:52
15 quid? Mmm. Really? | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
20, I'd say. ?45? Mm. All the best. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
Better go and see what you can do, but be gentle, be gentle. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
While Lesley goes off to gently strike a deal, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
have the Reds found their next buy? | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
I think we need to get a good item. Right, well, what... A quality item. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
Good quality? So, the furniture, silver...? | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
Yes. Silver, possibly. Silver. Ish. Yeah. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
Hmm, seems like they are still pondering. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
So, what is the news with the Blues? | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
?22. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25 | |
Well done, you, well done, you! | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
Now, we need to recap. So, there is ?22 on that. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
How much was our little wooden oak...? | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
15. 15. So, we have spent the princely sum of ?37. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:37
Nobody will ever believe that! Somebody call security! | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
They may be the last of the big spenders, | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
but the Blues are making great progress. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
I think they've done really, really well. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Half an hour gone, that's all, and they've bought two items, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
but they've spent no money. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:52
I'd really love to see them spend about ?200. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
So, we've really got to start spending! We have. Let's do it. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
It's not normally a problem with me. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
You always give... You're straight into there - impulsive. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
Just take a step back. I will. Let me do the talking for a minute. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
Go on, then. Right, OK, let's go. Are you ready? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
Yeah. Let's go. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
While the Blues go off for some impulsive spending, | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
are things clearer for the Reds? Time is running out. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
We've got one item. Well, shall we go and get them cuff links first? | 0:18:15 | 0:18:18
It's your shout. Let's go get the cuff links. You think so? | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
Right, do you remember where they were? Yeah. Right over there. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
Leg it! Let's go. Leg it! | 0:18:25 | 0:18:27
They're feeling the pressure, so it's back to the cuff links | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
they saw earlier. But has someone else snapped them up? | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
Are they still here, mate? They are. The cuff links we were | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
looking at before? They are. Oh, fab. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
Right. What is your very best price on that? | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
Best price is 24. 24 quid. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
24. Yeah, we'll have it. OK. 24. 24, it is. 24. Great! | 0:18:43 | 0:18:47
Great! Second buy bought. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
Will you do me a favour? Yeah? | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
Will you be as decisive on the third one? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
Yeah. Good! Come on, then! We'll have to be. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
The Reds have turned a corner. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
Where do you want to be now? Outside. Outside? Yeah. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
That's a definite? Definite. Right. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:02
And now, they're using words like definite! | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
That's great. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:06
Both teams have one item to find and it looks like the Blues | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
are having a sit down. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
They don't work. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
But it's got the chain and everything on. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
I know why they don't work. They are novelty! | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Well, I thought you could exercise while having a drink. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
Yeah, well, it is the best of both worlds, really, isn't it? | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
Sitting on your bar stool, having a little pedal. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
I just think there's bars, restaurants... | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
I think they are a nice thing and they are unusual. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
I like them. They're really nice. I think they are reproduction. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:39
I think they are made to look old. Yes. How much are they? | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
95 quid each. Each? Mm. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
And what can the lady do them for? Have you asked? Don't know yet. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
Well, OK, here's the plan, right. You have a word with the lady. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
See what the best you can get them for is. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
Don't agree to buy them yet... OK. ..and I'll go and have | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
a quick whizz round. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:54
That sounds like a good plan. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
And while Phil gently whizzes around, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
how are the definite Reds getting on? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
A giant Chinese fan! Ooh! Hm. We could all do with a fan. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
That looks all right. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
What do you reckon? Well, we'll wait and see. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
Wow. That's pretty decorative, isn't it? | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
Yeah. I mean, that would look pretty good somewhere, wouldn't it? | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
Yeah. I'm a big fan of that, as well. Big fan of it. Boom-boom! | 0:20:19 | 0:20:23
Right, joking aside, we are down almost to the wire. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
Yeah. OK. So, is that any good for you, for your third item? | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
Well, it's a SAW point. What? | 0:20:31 | 0:20:32
Oh! Come on! Be serious! | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
Do you fancy this fan or not? | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
Not for me. No. Not for you? | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
No, definitely not. So, no from us all. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
Let's leg it! | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
Well, they ARE being definite, but that's a definite no. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
Maybe a light jog will help. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
But what's the news on those bar stools? | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
How have you got on, then? 150 for the pair? | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
75 each. What I think you should do is ask them to keep them for you | 0:20:57 | 0:21:02
and let's go outside, because we haven't been there. No. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
See if we can see something out there that you really, really love. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
Yeah. And if you do, brilliant. Yeah. And if you don't, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
you've got those put by. The Blues are following their heart, | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
but they need to make a profit. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
Maybe something can tempt them outside? | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
You are not allowed to see those hedgehogs, whatever you do. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
OK? No, those are just remarkably awful, aren't they? | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
She'll look at them - "Oh, they're really cute!" | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
Hi, guys! How you doing, all right? | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
Come this, this way. Don't look over there. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:29
Nothing of any interest. How are you? Oh, yeah, fine. Good. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
Nothing at all. I'm just having a look for something, you know, | 0:21:31 | 0:21:35
really unusual and... | 0:21:35 | 0:21:36
There's nothing of any interest there. Just carry on walking. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:39
That's a hedgehog! No, it's not. Oh! | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
Oh, I've got to have a look at this! | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
Nice try, guys, but this girl can spot a hedgehog at 50 paces. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
Oh, that's a curly one! | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
They're awful. I've never seen a curly hedgehog, though. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
Curly. Curly. Curly! | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
No. Oh, that's dead cute. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
But you've got your work cut out there, Phil! | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
And have the Reds found anything yet? | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
Is that like a ukulele, Dave? Are you into ukuleles? Dave is. No. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
Oh, dear. Still browsing. Are you denying it, Dave? | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
I'm denying it and having nothing to do with it. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
So, do the Blues have a plan of action? | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
We've got about five minutes left. Is it stools or not stools? | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
Stools. Stools. Definitely? Definitely stools. Definitely? | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
Bar stools. Let's get those stools. Go on, then. Off you go. Off you go. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
Now, have they managed to buy those bar stools? | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
How did we got on? Good. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
Really pleased. How much? | 0:22:35 | 0:22:36
145, for the pair. Yeah, I think that's OK. I like them. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
I have never seen anything like them before, so couldn't put a price | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
on them. You need two people to really take a shine to them | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
at the auction. Yeah. And if they don't, we might be backpedalling. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
Yeah, OK. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
So, with just minutes to spare, the Blues have done it. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
Item three is secured and they can just relax. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
But no such luck for the Reds. They're still running! | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
Right, come on. We've got less than four minutes left. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
What's that? What is that? That is a Bible. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
Not the best sellers. We're going down, we need to find something. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
Here! This. What? What's this? That is a papier mache writing box. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
It's a fantastic writing slope. Lift the lid. Mid-Victorian. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
Let's have it. Right. Let's have it. Have a look at it. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
Another one that leapt out? Another one that leapt out. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
Jumped out at us. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:28
Mid-19th century, papier mache, lacquer, silk velvet lining, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
pen tray here. You'd have ink wells either side. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
You've got mother-of-pearl inlaid here, to give you | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
the impression of light coming through, | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
which obviously worked, because it caught your eye. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
Caught my eye. It's great. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:45
It's a decorative piece. It is a decorative piece. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
What's the price? Eeh! 185. Vastly overpriced, for nowadays. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
They used to be a lot more money. 145, maybe? | 0:23:52 | 0:23:56
We'll see, but you need to do it and you need to do it now. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
Right. We need to shout the seller over, then. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
What's the best you can do? | 0:24:01 | 0:24:02
We've got three minutes and counting. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
Yes. Um, 150 would be the very, very best. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
150? Yeah? Well, I reckon, if we offered 145? | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
Um, yes, go on, then. 145. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
Oh, my goodness! | 0:24:16 | 0:24:17
How many minutes?! What were you stressing about? | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
Brilliant, cheers. Thank you. Wow. Thank you very much. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
Wow. Amazing. How stressful was that? | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
DING | 0:24:26 | 0:24:27 | |
That's it, teams. Time's up. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
You owe me a cup of tea. Come on. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
Don't know what you were worrying about. What?! | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
Let's have a look at what the Reds bought. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
It was shabby and chic. The miniature chest of drawers cost ?21. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
The retro 1960s cuff links set them back ?24. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
And can the last-minute buy, the writing slope, | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
attract those bidders? It was ?145. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
Well, boys, you were very energetic at the end. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
Left things a wee bit to the last minute? | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
Yes, just a bit. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
But did you have a good time? | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
Yes, definitely. We had a laugh. You enjoyed it? | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
We did, yeah. What was your favourite item? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:11
I think the cuff links were probably the favourite item. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
How about you? I think the writing desk did it for me. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:16
Mother-of-pearl ingrained. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
I think that's got something about it. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
Something different. What's going to make the most profit? | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
Maybe the cuff links, to be honest. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
Do you agree with that? I do. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:27
I think the cuff links will make the most money. OK, boys, | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
how much did you spend? | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
?190. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:32 | |
Well, that's not too bad. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
?110, please. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
All right. We'll hand that over. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
Thank you. Now what are you going to buy | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
for these discerning gentlemen? | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
So it's really going to be difficult | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
finding something to please you two guys | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
but I'm going to try, but it's a big ask. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
Well, while Caroline goes round the fair yet again, | 0:25:52 | 0:25:57
we'll go and have a look at what the Blues have bought. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
Can the milk pail yield any cash? | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
It cost a mere ?15. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
Will the Arts and Crafts wall light shine bright at the auction? | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
It was ?22. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
And can they ride into profit with these industrial bar stools? | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
They were ?145. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
Well, guys, did you have a lovely time? | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
Oh, absolutely enjoyed it so much. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
Loved it. Terrific. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
You started off a wee bit conservatively | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
and then you went for bust. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
We did. What's your favourite item? | 0:26:33 | 0:26:35
Well, I loved the bar stools with the pedal cycles. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
I just think they're gorgeous. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:40
But are they going to make the most profit? | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
Well, I think they're quite unique, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
so if we get a couple of people wanting them, I think yes. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
So what was your favourite item? | 0:26:48 | 0:26:49
Mine was the barrel, because my surname's Cooper. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
What will make the most profit? | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
I think the barrel. The barrel? | 0:26:54 | 0:26:55
Yes. How much money did you spend? | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
We spent ?182. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
Well, that's not bad, not bad at all. Not too bad. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
So you will be giving me ?118... | 0:27:03 | 0:27:08
We will. There you go. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
Thank you. ..which I will hand over to Phil. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
There you are, Phil. What are you going to spend all that money on? | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
I think we might have a problem with the old bar stools | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
so I'm going to find something that might dig us out of trouble. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:22
So while Phil goes and looks for a bit of treasure, | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
we're off to the auction. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:26
Today we're in the lovely market town of Nantwich | 0:27:36 | 0:27:40
at Peter Wilson Auctioneers with our auctioneer today, Robert Stones. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:45
Nice to see you, Anita. It's lovely to be here. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:47
Now, let's look at our teams' objects. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
For our Red Team, Jason and David, | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
their first item was this miniature chest. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:58
Hand-painted. | 0:27:58 | 0:27:59
Tell me what you think of it. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
The thing about these is, that is not great quality, | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
but people love them. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:06
And they love having them just to keep little collector things in, | 0:28:06 | 0:28:09
so these are always popular. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:11
Would you call that shabby chic | 0:28:11 | 0:28:13
and do the good people of Nantwich like shabby chic? | 0:28:13 | 0:28:17
Fashionable, isn't it, shabby chic? Fashionable. Very fashionable. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:20
Yeah, but it's definitely not what might be called an apprentice piece | 0:28:20 | 0:28:23
because the quality isn't there. It's not there. | 0:28:23 | 0:28:26
What's your estimate on this little chest? | 0:28:26 | 0:28:28
We thought about ?10-?20 on that. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:30
They've paid ?21, so we might get there. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:35
All good things come in guineas, Anita, we know that. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
THEY LAUGH Terrific. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40
Jason and David's second item | 0:28:40 | 0:28:42
is this very fashionable pair of cuff links. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:46
Tell me what you think. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:47
They are very collectable, no doubt about it. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
Silver, that's a big bonus. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
They're not worth a lot | 0:28:52 | 0:28:53
but, because they're silver, that obviously is added value | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
and again ?10-?20 on those. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
10 to 20? Well, they paid 24. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
Did they? OK. Again we're getting there. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
Their third item was the papier mache writing desk. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:09
Tell me what you think about that. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:11
I think it's a shame that the picture panel on the front of it | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14
isn't a little bit better, | 0:29:14 | 0:29:15
because that really would have put some money on it. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
It's got that little bit of peeling, there. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:21
But papier mache is good stuff | 0:29:21 | 0:29:23
and people shouldn't be shy of buying it. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25
I know black is not fashionable, | 0:29:25 | 0:29:27
but quite honestly, that's a really good thing. | 0:29:27 | 0:29:30
I like that a lot. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:31
It's the sort of thing that quite honestly is slightly underrated | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
and should be bought to be collected, cos it's a good thing. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
Tell me your estimate on this. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
We've put 80 to 100 on that. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:40
80 to 100. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
Well, they paid 145 for it. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:44
They were a wee bit rushed at the end. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:47
It might have been a panic buy, but it's still a good thing. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:51
I hope it does well for them, and if it makes ?150, well, good on them. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:56
So a mixed bag, here. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:59
Yep. They may need their bonus buy... They could. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
..so let's go and have a look at it. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:03
Jason, David, you left Caroline ?110. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:11
Caroline, what did you buy? | 0:30:11 | 0:30:14
Well, it was going to be difficult pleasing you two | 0:30:14 | 0:30:17
but I hope I have. | 0:30:17 | 0:30:19
Wow. Mm, yeah. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:23
Yeah...that's small. You could get a few apples on that. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:26
One orange on the top of that. Exactly! | 0:30:26 | 0:30:29
It's small but beautifully formed. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
It's a little solid silver tazza, | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
or bonbon dish. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
The marks are slightly rubbed, | 0:30:36 | 0:30:39
cos silver is a very, very soft metal, | 0:30:39 | 0:30:41
but I imagine that dates from the Edwardian period - 1900, 1910. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:46
Right. OK. I think that's gorgeous. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:48
And how much did that cost? | 0:30:48 | 0:30:50
How much did you pay for that? How much do you think it cost? | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
I think that'd cost... | 0:30:52 | 0:30:53
30 quid. ?50. 50? Yeah. 30? | 0:30:53 | 0:30:56
?15. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:58 | |
One five. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
15! I've obviously got an eye for this. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:03
You have. And what do you think it will make at auction? | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
It's got to make ?25 or ?30. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:07
Right, OK. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
You don't have to make up your mind just now. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
Wait until your first three items have been sold. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:17
But right now, we're going to find out if the auctioneer thinks | 0:31:17 | 0:31:21
that Caroline's bonbon dish is a little sweetie. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:25
What do you think? Quite small, isn't it? | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
THEY LAUGH | 0:31:29 | 0:31:30
It's wee! | 0:31:30 | 0:31:32
But it's nice enough, isn't it? | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
There's nothing wrong with it at all, | 0:31:34 | 0:31:35
I'd just have liked it to have been a bit bigger. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:38
I've not put a lot of money on it for that reason - | 0:31:38 | 0:31:39
I've sort of said 15-25. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
What did she pay for it? ?15. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
Great buy! Yeah, I think that's terrific. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:46
So, let's look at our Blue team, Lesley and Lee. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:50
Their first item is this oak bowl with the silver-plated mounts - | 0:31:50 | 0:31:54
what do you think of that, Robert? | 0:31:54 | 0:31:56
Well, it's like a milk pail, isn't it? | 0:31:56 | 0:31:58
Of course, very much a farming community around here, Anita. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:00
Oh, right. So, milk pails, all this sort of thing, | 0:32:00 | 0:32:03
it's very much in the minds of people around here. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
I quite like this, I think the shape of it's rather good. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:08
It's nice. I don't mind that at all. | 0:32:08 | 0:32:10
Estimate, Robert? | 0:32:10 | 0:32:11
I've said 20-40 for that. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
Excellent, they only paid ?15. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:16
Really? Yes - I think they've done well, there. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:18
I think they're all right on that. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
Their second item was this Arts and Crafts wall lamp - | 0:32:20 | 0:32:24
do you like this item? | 0:32:24 | 0:32:25
Very fond of Arts and Crafts, it's in good condition - | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
which is all-important. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:30
I'd have that in my house no trouble at all, yep. | 0:32:30 | 0:32:32
Your estimate on this? | 0:32:32 | 0:32:34
I've put 30-60 on that. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:35
Well, that's excellent, because they only paid ?22. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:40
I wish I'd bought it! | 0:32:40 | 0:32:41
Going on to our third item - Lesley loved these... | 0:32:43 | 0:32:48
Industrial design is very fashionable at the moment, isn't it? | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
I'm sure you know that. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:52
I quite like these, actually, because they're fashionable, | 0:32:52 | 0:32:55
as much as anything. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:56
And I thought these might make ?50-?100. | 0:32:56 | 0:32:59
50-100. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:00
Well, they paid ?145, which is quite a lot of money. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:06
Yeah. We've had some of the viewing during the course of today, | 0:33:06 | 0:33:09
and there's been a lot of interest in these. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:12
So, we'll see what happens. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:13
They have been well-fancied? | 0:33:13 | 0:33:15
They have. And that might be a come-and-buy-me estimate. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:19
Well, let's hope so, for their sake, eh? | 0:33:19 | 0:33:21
Yeah. Well, not too bad at all. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
They may or may not need their bonus buy. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:28
But we're going to go and have a look at it anyway. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
Lesley, Lesley! | 0:33:31 | 0:33:33
Lovely to see you, but where is Lee? | 0:33:33 | 0:33:35
Oh, it's such a shame, he's had to work today so it's just me today. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:40
All right, well, you'll have to make all the decisions. | 0:33:40 | 0:33:42
I will! And I'm sure you'll be very good! | 0:33:42 | 0:33:45
You left Phil with ?118. | 0:33:45 | 0:33:49
Phil, what did you spend the money on? | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
This... | 0:33:52 | 0:33:53
is a bit like me, really, because this is yesterday's taste. | 0:33:53 | 0:33:56
Great quality, great item, Georgian oak corner cupboard. | 0:33:56 | 0:34:00
Oh, I love that. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:01
Really? Oh, I really do. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03
I love the marbling in the wood. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:05
It's lovely. That's half the battle, isn't it? | 0:34:05 | 0:34:08
Thank you. It cost me ?60. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:10
In an ideal world, it should make 80-120, | 0:34:10 | 0:34:12
but don't be surprised if it makes 40. | 0:34:12 | 0:34:14
You've got to find somebody that wants one. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:16
You don't have to make up your mind at the moment - | 0:34:16 | 0:34:19
wait until your first three items have been sold. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
But right now, we're going to find out | 0:34:21 | 0:34:23
if the auctioneer thinks that Philip's cabinet | 0:34:23 | 0:34:27
will corner a profit. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:28
Robert, Philip loves his furniture - what do you think of this piece? | 0:34:30 | 0:34:34
This is a fabulous piece of furniture. | 0:34:34 | 0:34:36
Lovely arch pediment. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
The big thing about this is, | 0:34:38 | 0:34:39
if I can just open the door, Anita... | 0:34:39 | 0:34:41
It's got the original key, the original lock - | 0:34:44 | 0:34:46
and that paintwork is also original. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:48
And that's what I love. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:49
And an honest piece of country furniture. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:52
Exactly. What's your estimate on the corner cupboard? | 0:34:52 | 0:34:55
50-80, Anita. Philip only paid ?60, so... | 0:34:55 | 0:34:59
A bargain, really, but it is a sign of the times. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
