Now, you're sisters, and you're very close, aren't you? | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
We are, very close. Being my big sister, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
-she used to like to mother me quite a lot when I was little. -Aw. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
But when I was older and she had her first boyfriend, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
I was a little bit feeling left out and I wanted to go out with them on | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
their first date, so they went for a romantic stroll along the beach with | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
me trailing along behind them. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
How long did that relationship last? | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
Longer than you'd think, actually. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Nicky, you've got a dancing business, haven't you? | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
I do. I've had it for 16 years. I was a professional dancer until I was 27. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
-Were you? -I was. -What sort of dance - modern dance or ballet? | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
-Showgirl. -Oh, really?! -Yes, absolutely. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
-The sort of Folies Bergere type? -Absolutely, Folies Bergere. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Can we have a little kick? | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
I'm not in the right dress code, but shall I have a go? I'll have a go. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
-Woo! -Oh, my word! That's quite high. Well, chaps? -Not a chance! | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
-Pretty impressive, I think, though. -Not a chance. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
-Now, what about antiques? -I like silver. -Do you? | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
-Yes. -Expensive tastes! | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
Yeah, I've got a little loupe, jeweller's loupe, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
-so I can look at hallmarks and things. -Very professional. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
Wonderful, so you'll be knowing exactly what to look for? | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
-Yes, think so. -Well, good luck, anyway. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
-BOTH: -Thank you. -Now, you boys, Dan and Sam. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
-You are twins, aren't you? -That's correct, yeah. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
Yeah, identical twins, yeah. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12
Dan in denim? | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
-BOTH: -That'll do. -That's the one - Dan in denim! -Yeah. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
Now, Dan, you're recently qualified, I think, as an electrician, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:21
-is that correct? -Yeah, I work as a spark now, up in London, yeah. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
-Enjoying that? -Love it, yeah. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:25
Good group of people I work with and I like playing with | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
-power and electricity! -Playing with power! | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Hasn't always been the case, though, has it? | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
No, no, I used to spend a lot of time up in the air before... | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Tell us more about that. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
..flying helicopters all around the Pacific, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
a lot of tourist gigs out to volcanoes. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
Good grief, what made you pack that up? | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
I thought I'd better come back and see my brother. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
Oh...my word! | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
I think these two get on as well as you two do. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Now, you're a fitness man, Sam? | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
I do like to do a bit of fitness every now and | 0:04:52 | 0:04:53
-again, yes, that's right. -Every day in the gym? | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
No, not quite every day in the gym - | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
I do do karate four times a week. | 0:04:58 | 0:04:59
Are you a qualified whatever-they-are? | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
I'm a certified instructor-in-training at the moment. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
Give us a move? | 0:05:04 | 0:05:05
No, I best not. It's very dangerous. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Have you tried it on your brother? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
-No. -Not yet. He hasn't annoyed me quite enough yet. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
I don't believe that for one moment! | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
What about antiques, chaps? | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
Um...a very limited knowledge. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
-Yeah? -I like shiny things. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
-Good start(!) -Heavy. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
Carry on(!) LAUGHTER | 0:05:24 | 0:05:25
You can do a bit better than that, can't you, Dan? | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
No, not at all - know nothing about antiques. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Oh, I say, girls. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:33
This is going to be a piece of cake for these girls. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Focused, know what they're going to buy...haven't got a clue! | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
-Absolutely. -You'll probably win. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
It's got to be interesting, though. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Now, what are you missing for your shop? | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
Inspiration, and probably a bit of cash. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
-Oh, yeah, money. -Money. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
Money? Well, if you look on your tree, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
on the left and on the right there, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
you will find a box. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
If you open it up, you might find some money. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
-ALL: -Oh-h-h! | 0:05:57 | 0:05:58
That'll be gone soon. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
£300 each, have a wonderful Christmas shop! | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
-Thank you very much. -Thank you! | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
Girls and boys go out to play, but who will win today? | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
And joining our two teams are our very own Santa's little helpers. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
Getting all wrapped up with the Reds is Raj Bisram. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
And hoping he'll have a gift of the gab for the Blues, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
it's Richard Madley. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
What is on our Christmas shopping list today? | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
Well, I'd like to find something industrial, or the | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
small, little items that we can use to maybe fill some stockings. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
Something striking? Perfect for Christmas, maybe? | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
A gift, maybe, for somebody? I don't know. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:38
Something electrical. Yeah, something a bit different. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
-Sparkly, glittery, and striking. -And glamorous. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Lights, camera, action! | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
Right, teams, your 60 minutes starts now! | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
Let's go! | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Let's start off at Santa's grotto. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
Very good, teams, and loving the hats, by the way. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
And already the Reds are well away. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
-Right, girls. -Nice, dancers. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
I quite like that silver lady who's fallen over - | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
she's had a Christmas tipple. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:08
Obviously had...obviously had too much Christmas drink. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
-She's quite nice. -Yeah. -What's she made of? | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
A white metal. Ooh, it's got £70 on that. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
It's quite heavy, that, for that. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
This would fetch somewhere between £40-£60 at auction. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
-She's quite nice. -Let's just find out. -OK. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
Hi, there. Right, come on, girls, in you go. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
What is the absolute best you can do for us on that? | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
60. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:31 | |
-60? -I was thinking more...35. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
-35? -Yeah. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:36
Oof, a cheeky bid, Nicky. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
-35, then. -Would you do it for 35? -You will do it for 35? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
That would be amazing. Oh, thank you. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
-Happy with that? -You happy? -Before we make a decision, girls, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
-OK, I mean, it's early days. -I know. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
-I can't believe it. -But I was drawn to her. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
-I was drawn to her, too. -You were both drawn to it, and you both like it? | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
-And I think I'd love that. -I'd like that. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:54
In that case, at £35, I would shake the lady's hand. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
-Lovely. -Thank you. -Thank you very much indeed. -Well done. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
-Well, our first buy. -BOTH: -Yay! Well done, girls. -Happy Christmas! | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
Crumbs, Reds, that's a 50% discount. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Two minutes in and one item down, Loving your work. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
Now, how are the boys getting on? | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
I've seen an old fire extinguisher I think we want to have a look at just | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
-over here, if I can. -Hey, if you've seen an old fire extinguisher, | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
take me to it. Let's have a look at it. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
I love the design of it. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
Right. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:23
Now, LMS. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
-Is that a railway? -What do you think about that? | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
Well, I think it's a good spot early on. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
And there's the box that's with it - LMS first aid box. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
-I take it that's... -All part of it? | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
Well, it's got a price tag on it. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
Any clues there? | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
-Not on there, no. -Marvellous(!) -THEY LAUGH | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
Even better. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
-Sir? -Hello. -Can you help us with your fire extinguisher | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
and your first aid kit? | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
The fire extinguisher appears to be unpriced, which is very seasonal, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
as it's Christmas. Thank you very much indeed(!) | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
Everyone loves a trier, Richard. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
And we were wondering if the first aid kit went with the | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
-fire extinguisher? -No, they don't go together. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
-The first aid kit's 45... -Right. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
..and the fire extinguisher's 110. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
-Oh, is it? -It is, yeah. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
Right. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
Now, LMS. Is that railway? | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
London, Midland and Scottish. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
-Right, OK. You were right with the railway connection. -OK, right indeed. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
Shall we have a look inside the first aid box? | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
Is that something we are able to do? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
I mean, I like the fire extinguisher, | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
but at £110, it would be rich, I think. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
Opening up, we've got... | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
Oh, my goodness me, look at that. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:31
That's fantastic, isn't it? Look at that. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
Wow. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:34 | |
Might struggle to make a profit on it. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
Why don't we just bank it? | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
-Good idea. -Perfect idea, yeah. -Thank you very much. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
We may well return. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
If we did return, was 45 your final price? | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Yeah, we could maybe do a little on each, specially if you're buying the two. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
-It's Christmas. -He's a good salesman, this guy, indeed. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
Thank you very much. We may well return. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
-Thank you. -Thanks very much. -OK, cheers. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
All very promising, Blues. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:57
It's still early doors. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
Right, Reds, chop, chop. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
What do you reckon? She can chop the tree down. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
We haven't got the tree yet. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
-Oh, the Christmas tree. -That's what I was thinking. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Once we've won, we'll put one up. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
Once we've won, eh, Nicky? | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
I do love a bit of fighting talk. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
# Simply having a wonderful Christmas time. # | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
Back with the Blues, and here's something | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
for under the Christmas tree. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Thought this was quite interesting, for the Christmas time as well. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
Toys, bikes. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:25
Yep. I like the look of it. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Not so keen about the condition and I've also seen the price on it so... | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
-Shall we move on? -On our bikes. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
That's a no, then, chaps. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
Off you scoot. Meanwhile, the Reds are getting into the festive spirit. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
Merry Christmas. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
Merry Christmas! | 0:10:44 | 0:10:45
What have you seen down there, Sam? Let's have a look at it. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
It's a fire extinguisher, is it? | 0:10:48 | 0:10:49
You like your fire extinguishers, don't you? | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
-There's a theme, isn't there? -There is definitely a theme, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
going with fire extinguishers. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:55
I love the branding, just on the back there. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
What, the maker's name and the instructions? | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
Pyrene fire extinguisher. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
Probably from... What's this from, the 1950s? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
-I would have thought so. -Indeed. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
Shall we actually have a look at it? | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
-Can I... -There you are, it's all yours. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
-I really like that. -It is nice. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Nice item. Really nice. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:14
-It's quite cool, isn't it? -Yeah, yeah. -That chrome look is very in, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
and you were talking early on about | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
-something slightly industrial or engineering. -Yeah, absolutely, yeah. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
And the price? | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
Well, the ticket price is £20. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
Well, we're not going to lose a lot from this, which is quite useful. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
-I like your thinking. This is why you are here. Sam... -Come on, Sam. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
-Shall I go? -Go and do your bit for the blues. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:35
-You go and get a few pounds off for us. -I'll do that. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
All right, good luck. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:39
Well, sir, it says 20. What would be your best price? | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
Festive price, seeing as it's Christmas. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
-I'll do 15, as it's Christmas. -As it's Christmas. Do it for 15? | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
Yeah. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:48 | |
Do you think there's any... | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
I don't think we can go wrong with 15, do you? | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
How about 12, and we've got a deal? | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
I can't really, no. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:55
-No? -I've got kids to feed, look. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:56
And Christmas is coming! | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
I'll tell you what, as it's Christmas, I'm happy with 15. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
-Are you happy? -Are you happy with 15? -I would be happy with 15. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
-I'm happy. Good. Excellent. -Thank you. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:05
In that case, thank you very much indeed. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
-Thanks very much. -Cheers, mate, thank you. -Indeed. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
-Happy Christmas. -Merry Christmas! | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
Excellent! Right then. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
-We have a purchase. -On to our second, Blues. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Come on, let's keep going. Well done. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:17
Good work, Blues. That's one to tick off the Christmas list. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
Deal sealed in ten minutes. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
Well done! | 0:12:23 | 0:12:24
Meanwhile, the Reds are still on the lookout for their second item. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
Glasses are pretty, those glasses. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
They are very Christmassy looking. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
They are Italian, they are in a nice box, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
but, I mean, what are they going to cost? | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
I wouldn't want to pay more than between £5 and £10 for those. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
You know, in an auction they could make 15, 25, £30. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
We want something... Bit more than that, yeah. I like them. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
OK, well, we will remember those. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
We'll try and remember where they are. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:52
Something for a cheeky little Christmas tipple, maybe. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
One for the back burner, anyway. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
What have the three wise men spotted? | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
What would you use it for now, though, Richard? | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
You could use it for a coffee table. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
Store the magazines away. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
-Store magazines, blankets. -Hide Christmas presents. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
Exactly right. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
Always thinking, Blues. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
I like it. By Jove, girls, is that Mother Christmas? | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
-Christmas lady, let's have a look at that. -I like her. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
Oh, yes, definitely. And she's dressed in a lovely colour, red. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
-Yes. -Absolutely. -OK. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
Going to have to pick her up and have a look. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
Oh, it's a Leonardo collection. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:30
Yeah, this is a collection that's not that popular. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
I'll be honest, girls. It's a nice figurine, nice, Christmassy, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
but to be honest, there's not a huge collectors' market. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:39
These were pretty cheap when they were made | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
so we're going to have to put that back. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
A pair of Staffordshire dogs. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
Do you know what these would fetch if these were in good condition? | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
-No. -No. -Sticks! | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
DRUMBEAT AND CYMBAL | 0:13:50 | 0:13:51
Raj Bisram, ladies and gentlemen. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
He's here all week. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:57
What's taken your fancy there, Richard? | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
This is catching my eye. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
-What is it? -Well, it's a cylindrical pin box or dressing table box | 0:14:01 | 0:14:06
-made in Birmingham. -Birmingham stamp. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Very good. Gosh, you can recognise your hallmarks already. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
It's written, Birmingham. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:12
-That old trick. -But I think you should check anyway. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
-1898. -God, you can even work out the dates as well. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
You guys, you're dangerous. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:21
No flies on these boys, Richard. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
The price on it is shown currently at £68, | 0:14:24 | 0:14:29
so I'm going to put that one on my list. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
I can also see something also catching my eye which is over here. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
-OK. -Similar. For which I get out my eye piece. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
I'm going to have to have a look at this, because this is not English. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
This is possibly Indian. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
Now, Indian silver is something | 0:14:46 | 0:14:47
that has become quite collectable over the last few years. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
-The price on this is £75. -OK. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
I think the price is right up there. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
The cylindrical box would probably be a better, safer bet. | 0:14:56 | 0:15:00
You haven't got to buy either of them. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
Shall we get our feet damp and just see? | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
-Let's do it. -Let's ask some questions. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:05
Now, as it's Christmas, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
we are thinking about buying a piece of silver for the auction. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
And I've picked up these two pieces. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
The cylindrical box. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
And the best price you might be able to do on that one? | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
-Would be 60. -Now, the beaker, obviously, | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
is a little bit of a punt on my behalf, | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
and I'm not getting strong buying signals from my team members here. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
So I'd be going out... I was guessing it was Indian. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
STALL HOLDER: I think it's Indian. And I'd probably | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
-nibble that down to 60 as well for you. -That would be a gamble. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
-Let's go for the gamble. -I want to gamble. -Do you want to gamble? | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
-Yeah. -I think it's worth a gamble. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
I love it. Excellent. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:40
We're going to go for your beaker. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
Thank you very much indeed. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:43
-My kind of buyers. -Consider it sold. Gamblers. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
-Thank you very much. -Yes, indeed! | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
Well, these chaps are easily persuaded. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
No pressure, Richard. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
That's two for the Blues, and the Reds are playing catch up, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
with just one buy. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
Coming up to halfway through your Christmas shop, teams. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
Get your skates on! | 0:15:59 | 0:16:00
-Oh, look! -Sledges, sledges. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
We might have a hard winter this year, girls. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
-I like a sledge. -My goodness, you like a sledge. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
-I do. -I wonder if they've got one they can do for a tenner. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
-Let's find out. -Let's find out. Yeah, if we could get one of these | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
for a tenner that would be great, wouldn't it? | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
I like that one. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
-Yeah, I quite like that one. -Can you do it for us | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
for a Christmas treat for £10? | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
STALL HOLDER: Normally 17.50. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
-OK. -17.50 £10 for Christmas? | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
-I'll do it. -Yeah? -Oh, can you? -OK, girls. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
What you should say to these gentlemen | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
is a big, big thank you in Dutch. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
OK. So what you say is danke je wel. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
-Danke je wel! -Danke je wel! | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Danke je wel! | 0:16:42 | 0:16:43
Fluent in Dutch, Mr Bisram. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
I'm very impressed. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
-Danke je wel! -Danke je wel! | 0:16:48 | 0:16:50
Lovely. Fantastic. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:51
And I'm also very impressed with your second purchase, ladies. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
A very apt buy for today's shop. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
-Hooray. -Danke je wel! | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Now we need the snow. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:00
Now we need some snow. Fantastic. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:02
And cue the snow. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
-Am I carrying the sledge? -You carry the sledge. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
Like the sledge, let's hope it's not all downhill from here, ladies. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:18
OK, teams, that's two items apiece. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
Just that final item to find. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
OK, Blues Brothers, what's the plan? | 0:17:22 | 0:17:26
I don't know where we're going to go on the third one. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
-The third will be big. -We've got something interesting. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
We got something silver. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
-The third one's got to be a bit different. -Yeah. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
-And, ladies? -We did say we were going to | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
-get something sparkly and glittery and we haven't yet. -Oh, dear. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
-Well, we'll have to. -Half an hour. -Half an hour, we'll find something | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
sparkly, glittery and Christmassy. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:43
-How about that? -Definitely. -Definitely. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
-Spend some money. -Yeah. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:46
Well, you sound confident anyway, girls. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
And the boys are sticking to their plan. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
They're looking for something on the large side. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
I think that would look pretty cool in most places, | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
-to be honest, wouldn't it? -It would do. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
It would do. Look, it's a Fresnel lamp. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
It is stunning. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:01
But I'm going to tell you now, time against us, | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
I think it would have been a nice one under | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
the Christmas tree on Christmas morning, | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
-but not even if our budget was tripled. -No. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:13
And you'd need a rather large Christmas tree for it to fit under. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
Move along, boys. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
Looks like it's a change of scenery for the Reds as they venture inside. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
After you. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
-BOTH: -Thank you. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
Right then, Richard, time for a little regroup. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
Remember, you still have that first aid kit as a backup. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:32
I think it will have been snapped up but let's have a look, shall we? | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
Exactly. So if it is there, we can have a deal. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
If it's not, then plan B, | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
we have to try and find something way up the other end of the fair. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
-Are we going? -Quick, let's go. -Come on, let's go then. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
Not exactly large, though, is it? | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
You'd better get a move on. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
Girls, we haven't got long left. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
There is some beautiful things on this stand | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
and I know that one of you likes Lalique. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
-Lalique, yeah. -I mean, you know, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:56
that is a modern piece of Lalique but, | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
you know, of course, Rene Lalique, | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
one of the great designers of glassware. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
But I'm not too keen on the modern. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
-No, I don't like... -This is embossed as well. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
But we've only got 17 minutes left so we need to really get a jiffy on. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
Well, at least you ladies know what you like. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
Oh, Dan's spotted something. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
It's a field radio, isn't it? | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
Field telephone. Yeah. Second World War. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
So the price on the telephone is... | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
Well, it was 120. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:24
I'll do it for you for 75. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
I've seen them do well before. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
We've got a gamble to take. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
Is the first aid kit still there? | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
The telephone's here. What about this? | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
Of the two of you, who's the fastest runner? | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
-Samuel, probably. -Samuel, right, you run over... -See if it's still there. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:44
See if it's still there. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:45
-If it's still there, you've got to come back here. -OK. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
Off you go. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
Running all the way, Samuel. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
Running! Oh, well. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:53
What have the Reds found? | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
# Five gold rings! # | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
Actually, not five, just the one. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
-Oh, that one looks nice. -That ring there. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:02
-That's quite pretty, isn't it? -The ruby? | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
-Yeah. That's the very best, isn't it? -Wow. That's lovely. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
I'll do 180 on it for you. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:08
-How much would that sell? -I think it's a nice... | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
If it's a nice little ruby... | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
Rubies, apart from diamonds, are the most expensive thing. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:18
What's the gold, Raj? | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
-What is this gold? -It'll be, I should think it's either | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
nine or 18-carat gold. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:24
OK, stop looking at it on your finger now. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
Start some dealing, girls. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
That's right, Raj, time to get down to business, ladies. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
So, after Sam's leisurely trot, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
he's back at the first aid kit store and, luckily, it's still there. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
Hello there. Hi, I saw you earlier about the first aid kit. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
-Yeah, that's right. -It's marked 45. -Yeah. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:45
Is there any movement on that at all? | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
-Best price would be 35. -35. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
That would be my best price. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
Let me report back. I'll be back in a few moments. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
Back you go then, Sam. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
Meanwhile, our Red sisters are still at the same stall. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
Sadly, just like Santa, our stall holder is a bit shy. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
-Hello. -No, there is no negotiation on that price. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
How much did you say it was? 150? | 0:21:08 | 0:21:09
-180. -Was that 160? | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
And now the charm offensive. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
-What's your name? -Vic. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:17
Hello, Vic, I'm Nicky. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
Here we go. Watch those eyelids flutter. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
OK. Not to make my Christmas? | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
I'll tell you what, as I'm Nicky and you're Vic, 170. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
STALL HOLDER: You're getting a bargain at 180. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
'Nice try, Nicky!' | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
STALL HOLDER: 175, it's yours. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:33
What do you think? | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
-What do I think? -Shall we go? -We are in too deep, girls. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
-We're in too deep. -We're in too deep now. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
OK, 175, can we shake on that? | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
Yep, 175. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
-Fantastic. Thank you very much indeed. -Thank you. -Do well with it. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
The sparkle we wanted. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:50
Absolutely. And I can tell you're happy with it | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
because your eyes are both sparkling. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
So, fantastic. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:55
Oh, you charmer, Raj. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Only minutes to spare and that's the Reds sewn up. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
So, Sam, what's the plan? | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
Dan, Richard, I've got an answer. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:05
-It's still there. -Yes... -Best possible price, £35. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
£35. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12 | |
-That is a good price. -What are you thinking? | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
Well, we thought you would be quite good at negotiating, quite good. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
-We said 40. -We thought 40. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
Did you? I think that is our third item. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
Let's go and have a look, shall we? | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
I don't want to rush you, boys, but you only have three minutes left. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
I feel some divine intervention is needed. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
-We've got our three items. -BOTH: -Yay! | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
Let's go and have a cup of tea, shall we? Well done. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:37
Mine will be a white with two sugars, thank you very much. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
Come on then, Blues, let's wrap this one up. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
-It's still here. -It is still here. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
-Well, it was the second item we looked at, 58 minutes ago... -Yes. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:50
..and it is still here. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:51
Let's go and do the deal then, Sam. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
-Thank you very much, sir, we'll have that at 35. -35. No worries. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
Thank you very much indeed, | 0:22:56 | 0:22:57
-and a merry Christmas to you. -And to you, too. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
Hats off, teams, your time is up. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
-So, what shall we get? A glass of eggnog? -That sounds wonderful. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
Now, let's check out what the Red team have bought. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
The deco lady cost them £35. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
Next up, sliding its way to the auction was the sledge. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
It only cost them a tenner. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
Ring the bells. Their final bit of bling set them back £175. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:27
Nicky and Sue, good shopping. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
-You did spend quite well, didn't you? -Yes. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
What was your favourite item? | 0:23:32 | 0:23:33
-It has to be the ring. -The ring. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
I did get some money off. I got it for 175. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
Yes, but they were only asking 180! | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
£5! | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41 | |
Cracking bargaining! | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
-And what's going to make the biggest profit? -The Art Deco lady. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
-The Art Deco lady. And what do you think, Sue? -I think the same. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
-I think that one. -So that's the one. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:49
-Confident, Raj? -I love the sledge. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:52
Do you? I know why Raj loves the sledge... because it was cheap! | 0:23:52 | 0:23:57
-Now, you spent £220. -We did. -Which means you have 80 left over, | 0:23:59 | 0:24:03
which I'm afraid you have to hand over to me. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
-Oh, do I? -I don't hold it for long, because it goes to wonderful Raj, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
who is going to buy something | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
particularly Christmassy with it, aren't you? | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
Well, I'm going to go and look for a reindeer. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
THEY LAUGH | 0:24:16 | 0:24:17
-I'm going to try. -To go with our sledge. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
-Wonderful. -Don't wait up for me. -To pull the sledge? | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
Well, good luck with that. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
While Raj goes in search of Rudolph, | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
we'll check out what the Blue team have bought. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
When roasting your chestnuts on an open fire, | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
be sure to have one of these handy. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
The extinguisher cost them £15. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
Like the Christmas turkey, they gobbled up the goblet for £60. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
Finally, their shop was wrapped up | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
with the first aid kit costing them £35. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
Dan and Sam, are you expecting something | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
to go wrong with your lives? | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
It must just be built in, I guess. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:54
You bought a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
THEY LAUGH | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
What is all that about? | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
Is that a first? | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
I think it IS a first. What's your favourite lot? | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
I love the fire extinguisher, | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
just for the price paid, and I think it's a stylish item. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:12
-Are you the same, Dan? -Yeah, definitely. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:13
Although I do like the first aid kit as well. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
What's going to make the biggest profit? | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
-Out with it, man! -The fire extinguisher. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:18
-The fire extinguisher. -Without a doubt. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
Without a doubt. You only spent £110. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
-Sorry about that. -But that means you've got 190 left over. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
-There you go. All yours. -No, no - all HIS. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
What is he going to do with THAT? | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
On my way round, I've seen something | 0:25:31 | 0:25:33
that I think just captures the moment | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
at this special time of year. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
So watch this space, | 0:25:37 | 0:25:38
or I might go off piste. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
Ooh! | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42 | |
While Richard goes off piste, we're off to deck the halls. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
Just down the road, at Leeds Castle in Kent, | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
I'm here to discover the history of Christmas decorations. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
Fashions have certainly changed over the years. | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
It's only since the mid-20th century | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
that decorations have actually gone up before Christmas Eve. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
Nowadays, it's not unusual to see a touch of tinsel in October. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
Christmas just wouldn't be the same without a bauble or two, | 0:26:12 | 0:26:15
but have you ever wondered where these customs originated? | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
I've been joined by historian Rupert Matthews to find out more. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
So, in times gone by, how did people used to decorate their houses? | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
Well, if we're really going back 1,000, 1,500 years, | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
we'd be using evergreen holly, of course, | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
something from a long time back. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
If you want to look at mistletoe, for instance, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
-the Pagan Celts viewed this as a big fertility symbol. -Ah! | 0:26:39 | 0:26:43
Hence the kissing. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:44
Hence the kissing, you're absolutely right. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
What about the Yuletide log? | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
That's another thing that goes back to pagan times. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
That was a huge, great part of a tree trunk | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
that was dragged into a lovely big hall or a castle like this. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
And you set fire to it, | 0:26:58 | 0:26:59
and you kept its smouldering right the way through | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
-for the next two weeks. -Fascinating. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
Now, coming to more modern times, what about today's decorations? | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
A lot of the things we do today started in Victorian times. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
The very first Christmas card came out in the 1840s. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
But, of course, the really big thing | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
the Victorians brought in to this country was the Christmas tree. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
But it was Prince Albert who really popularised the Christmas tree | 0:27:19 | 0:27:23
from the 1840s onwards, after he had married Queen Victoria. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
Because he was also trying to remould the royal family | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
and give it a lot more of a softer profile. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
So he made a big thing about | 0:27:32 | 0:27:34
presenting Christmas trees to schools, to children's homes, | 0:27:34 | 0:27:38
to all the sorts of charities | 0:27:38 | 0:27:39
that the royal family was getting involved with. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
So it had that cachet of royalness about it, | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
and before you know where you are, everyone wants a Christmas tree. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
And with the Christmas tree, of course, came decorations. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
And so, for instance, the very first Christmas bauble | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
-started over 200 or 300 years ago, hand-blown glass. -Oh! | 0:27:52 | 0:27:57
-Very fine glass. -Yes. | 0:27:57 | 0:27:59
Of course, very difficult to make, cost an absolute fortune. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
And it wasn't until plastic came in in the 1950s | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
that really, again, most people could start to have | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
large numbers of baubles around the house. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
-Ah, what about the lights? -The lights. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
Well, would you believe it? | 0:28:12 | 0:28:13
Back then people lit candles and put them on the Christmas tree. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:18
-Now, you know how...? -Health and safety! | 0:28:18 | 0:28:19
You know how dry a Christmas tree is. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:21
There were some terrible accidents. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:23
And so in 1882, over in America, | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
Thomas Edison came up with the idea of electric lights on trees. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:30
He did them as a publicity stunt | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
-and nobody took any notice at all cos they cost so much money! -Yeah. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:36
Once they'd mastered how to make them | 0:28:36 | 0:28:38
as tiny as the ones we use today, they started to take off, | 0:28:38 | 0:28:41
and before you know where you are again, of course, | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
you've got lights all over the Christmas tree. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:46
Then someone invented outside lights | 0:28:46 | 0:28:47
so you have lights all over your house. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
We've got a nice reindeer on our front lawn. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:51
My girls absolutely love it. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:54
Thank you, Rupert. I'm going to make it my job | 0:28:54 | 0:28:56
to put more effort into decorating my home this Christmas. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
-LAUGHING: -Quite right. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:00
Meanwhile, we're off to the auction room. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
Will our teams find some crackers of their own? | 0:29:02 | 0:29:04
MUSIC: Last Christmas by Wham! | 0:29:04 | 0:29:08
My trusty reindeer have brought me down the road to Canterbury, | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14
to the Canterbury Auction Galleries, | 0:29:14 | 0:29:16
and I'm here with the auctioneer, Cliona. | 0:29:16 | 0:29:18
-Hello. -Hello. You're very welcome. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:20
Well, it's great to see you. | 0:29:20 | 0:29:21
And what do you think of the Reds' items? | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
We start with this figure here. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:26
-Very Art Deco in style. -Yup. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:28
The chrome-plated, lovely naked woman always goes down quite well, | 0:29:28 | 0:29:32
-doesn't it? -Yes. I'm not surprised. | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
In this style of the artists of the period, | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
-but not a period piece. -Yeah. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:38
But a nice decorative thing nonetheless. | 0:29:38 | 0:29:41
And for that reason, we've put £15 to £20 on it. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
£15 to £20? | 0:29:44 | 0:29:45
Well, they paid £35. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
So you might have to just press the accelerator pedal a little bit. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
We'll do our best. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:52
The second item, of course, is extremely Christmassy, | 0:29:52 | 0:29:55
-and is our sledge. -Fantastic, isn't it? | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
We just have to hope it will be a white Christmas... | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
-I'm dreaming of one. -Indeed, aren't we all? | 0:30:00 | 0:30:02
..to tempt kids out there and tempt the parents to buy it for them. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:06
I mean, if not, it's a nice decorative thing, | 0:30:06 | 0:30:08
-the sort of thing you sometimes see in pub interiors or the like. -Yeah. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
-Estimate? -Estimate we put on that was £5 to £10. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:15
Right, they paid ten, so one quick bid and you're away. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
Now, what about the ring, the third lot? | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
A very nice decorative ring. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:22
-Obviously, there is a value in the gold and the stones there. -Quite. | 0:30:22 | 0:30:27
18-carat gold. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:28
-The stones are pretty but they're not very big. -No. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
However, we still placed an estimate of £100 to £150 on it. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:36
Yep. Well, that's pretty promising, really. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38
-They paid 175. -OK. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:40
So they're just over the top of your estimate. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:42
If the ring doesn't tick all the boxes, | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
they might need their bonus buy. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:46
Let's have a look it. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:47
-Nikki and Sue, you spent most of your money, didn't you? -Yeah. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
£220, leaving this man - at Christmas time - with £80. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:58
What have you got them? | 0:30:58 | 0:30:59
I thought, "Christmas time, what do people like?" | 0:30:59 | 0:31:01
-Cocktails! -Hey! | 0:31:01 | 0:31:03
-Ooh, I love cocktails. -A couple of siphons and... | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
-A little shaker. -..a little shaker. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:08
-I like that. -They're nice. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:09
-That's really nice. Three for the price of one. -Yeah. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:11
Have a look at the cocktail shaker. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
I mean, most cocktail shakers are plated, | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
but this is a little bit different. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:18
You can actually see what's going in there, it's marked up. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:22
It's just a little bit different, as far as cocktail shakers go. | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
-Do you like cocktails, girls? -Yes. -Love cocktails. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:27
Oh, Raj, you've hit the spot. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:29
-Well... -What sort of era, when is that? | 0:31:29 | 0:31:31
I should think it's 1950s. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
-It doesn't matter, really. -No, it doesn't. -Useful object. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:35
-Absolutely. -I'd buy it. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:37
So how much did you pay for it? | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
Well, I had £80. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
Would you be upset if I spent all of the £80? | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
No, I don't think so. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:45
Oh, that's good. Cos I spent 22. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:47
-Oh, did you? Brilliant. -Wow. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:49
And what do you think it will make at auction? | 0:31:49 | 0:31:51
They should make £30. £30 to £40. | 0:31:51 | 0:31:52
-OK. -Brilliant. -They're lovely. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:54
Well, girls, of course, you don't have to decide now. | 0:31:54 | 0:31:56
Leave it till the auction. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:58
You're quite pleased with that, aren't you? | 0:31:58 | 0:32:00
-Yeah. -Cheers to Raj. | 0:32:00 | 0:32:01
Well, the girls like the siphons and the cocktail shaker. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
But will the auctioneer? | 0:32:04 | 0:32:06
The cocktail shaker is probably the more commercial of them. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:11
And the problem is, it's just not a very early one. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:14
Some of them can be extremely ornate and decorative, | 0:32:14 | 0:32:17
and this may not be quite there. | 0:32:17 | 0:32:19
However, it still serves a purpose and Christmas is coming, | 0:32:19 | 0:32:22
-so fingers crossed. -We'd both like a cocktail, wouldn't we? | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
-Indeed, yes, please. -What about an estimate? | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
We placed £5 to £10 on those. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:29
I'm not surprised. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:31
-Raj went in at £22 here. -OK. | 0:32:31 | 0:32:34
But not too bad. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:36
Well, that's for the Reds. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:37
Now, Sam and Dan for the Blues. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:39
Their first item is the fire extinguisher here. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:42
It's made by a manufacturer, Pyrene, | 0:32:42 | 0:32:45
who made many fire extinguishers for commercial vehicles | 0:32:45 | 0:32:49
-and boats and the like. -Yeah. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:51
So it is the sort of thing that might appeal to a classic car owner | 0:32:51 | 0:32:55
-or something like that. -Ah! | 0:32:55 | 0:32:56
It's an interesting thing, it's in reasonable condition, | 0:32:56 | 0:32:59
-and it also has its metal holder as well. -Yeah. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:02
For that reason, we've put a huge estimate of £5 to £10 on it. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:06
-Have you really? You've gone right over the top there, then? -Yes! | 0:33:06 | 0:33:09
-But it's not too terminal, really, cos they only paid £15. -Brilliant. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:13
Now, the next item intrigues me. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:15
The beaker. Is it silver? | 0:33:15 | 0:33:17
We have tested it and it proves to be a bit of silver. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:22
-What we would call low-grade silver. -Yes, yes. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:24
So it's below our standard 925 | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
-that would be typical for English silver here. -Quite. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:31
And as a result, we have to call it silvery metal or white metal. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
What sort of estimate have you put on it? | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
-We put £25 to £30 on it. -Yeah. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:38
It certainly has that Indian feel to it. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:42
And, you know, we may have the bidders coming in | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
from the Middle East or Near East on this, so I think we should do OK. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
Fingers crossed. Well, he did pay £60. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
OK. Yes, he splashed out the cash on this lot, on their behalf. | 0:33:50 | 0:33:55
Now, Sam, again, liked the first aid box. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:59
-Yes. Was he feeling poorly? -THEY LAUGH | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
Well, he might be after the sale of the beaker. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:04
There is the railway connection, | 0:34:04 | 0:34:05
which might bring it up a little bit. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
An intriguing thing to have. | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
Included in the box are a lot of the contents, | 0:34:09 | 0:34:12
complete with a record book of the treatments that were distributed. | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
What about an estimate? | 0:34:15 | 0:34:16
-We put £10 to £15 on that. -Have you? -Yes. | 0:34:16 | 0:34:19
-They paid £35 for this. -OK. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
Now, they might need some first aid. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:23
They might also need their bonus buy, let's have a look at it. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:25
Sam and Dan, you left this man with £190. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
-Yeah, a lot of money. -What did you get? | 0:34:30 | 0:34:32
So, tempted as I was to go skiing at this time of the year, | 0:34:32 | 0:34:35
instead I thought we'd go skating. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
Now, I've brought you... | 0:34:38 | 0:34:40
Ooh, that's a reaction, wasn't it? | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
-It's lovely, isn't it(?) -I bought you a watercolour. | 0:34:42 | 0:34:45
I bought you an Edwardian watercolour. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
Continental scene of skaters on a lake in Austria. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
So how much did you pay for that watercolour? | 0:34:51 | 0:34:54
Well, you left me £190. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:57
And with it, I spent... | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
£5 of it. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:00
-Oh, that's brilliant. -What do you think we could get at auction? | 0:35:00 | 0:35:03
I think today we're going to do double, | 0:35:03 | 0:35:06
treble or even quadruple our money. | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
-I like the sound of that. -Brave talking. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:11
With this huge amount of money he's laid out, | 0:35:11 | 0:35:13
you don't have to make your decision now. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:15
Leave it until the auction and then you can decide | 0:35:15 | 0:35:18
whether it's £5 well spent or very badly spent. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
Either way, what does the auctioneer think? | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
Well, Cliona, they sent Richard with £190 to spend, | 0:35:25 | 0:35:30
and he bought this. What do you think? | 0:35:30 | 0:35:32
Right. Did he spend all £190 on it? | 0:35:32 | 0:35:34
LAUGHING: I'm not going to tell you until you give me an estimate! | 0:35:34 | 0:35:37
Right. Well, a nice continental watercolour, a great scene, | 0:35:37 | 0:35:41
the festive scene and the time of the year that we're selling. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
But it's an unknown artist. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:46
Condition is a little bit against it... | 0:35:46 | 0:35:48
It's a bit faded, isn't it? | 0:35:48 | 0:35:49
A little bit faded, and also you've got these brown spots on the paper, | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
-which we refer to as foxing. -Yeah. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:54
For that reason, I like it as a decorative picture, | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56
but we've only put £10 to £15 on it. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:59
Well, well, well. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:00
-I can reveal that he didn't pay £190. -OK. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:04
-He paid a fiver. -Oh, right. Brilliant. | 0:36:04 | 0:36:07
Do you know, I think that's really charming for £5. | 0:36:07 | 0:36:10
That's all right, isn't it? A nice decorative picture. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:12
-A quick minimum bid of 100 and he'll be well happy. -Perfect. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
-You'll be taking the sale? -I will indeed. | 0:36:15 | 0:36:17
Good, I'm looking forward to it. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:19
I wonder what's going to happen. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:21
700. 720. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:23
Right at the back of the room, I'm selling. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:26
Sam and Dan, are you aficionados of the saleroom? | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
-I think so. -Not really. -Been before? | 0:36:29 | 0:36:31
-BOTH: -Never. -THEY LAUGH | 0:36:31 | 0:36:32
Now, your fire extinguisher, you like that? | 0:36:32 | 0:36:36
-I love that item. -Best item. -You really like that item. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:39
