Today on Bargain Hunt, I'm going to be trying my hand at milling...

0:00:030:00:05

..putting these enormous Victorian cogs into action

0:00:060:00:11

and producing my own flour.

0:00:110:00:14

But before all that,

0:00:140:00:15

I'm off to an antiques fair on the island of Anglesey.

0:00:150:00:19

Will it be the Reds or will it be the Blues that make the most bread?

0:00:190:00:23

So, let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:230:00:26

Both of our teams have got £300 and one hour in which to buy three items

0:00:510:00:56

that hopefully will return them a profit

0:00:560:00:58

when they sell on at the auction.

0:00:580:01:00

Here's a taste of what's coming up.

0:01:000:01:02

On today's show, the Reds have some unusual ideas about antiques.

0:01:030:01:07

Not for sucking boils, is it?

0:01:070:01:10

THEY LAUGH

0:01:100:01:12

Sucking boils?!

0:01:120:01:14

The Blues are spoilt for choice.

0:01:140:01:17

-Look at the big one.

-Look at the medium-size one!

0:01:170:01:20

-Wow!

-Look at the leather one!

0:01:200:01:21

And at the auction, will the Reds make the most profit...

0:01:230:01:26

GAVEL BANGS

0:01:260:01:27

Get in!

0:01:270:01:29

..or will it be the Blues that come out on top?

0:01:290:01:31

GAVEL BANGS

0:01:310:01:32

-Yes!

-Yes.

0:01:320:01:33

But all that is coming up later.

0:01:360:01:37

So let's meet today's teams.

0:01:370:01:39

And for the Red team, we've got father and daughter Gwyn and Sian.

0:01:390:01:43

And for the Blues, we've got husband and wife Rob and Katie.

0:01:430:01:46

Hello. ALL: Hello!

0:01:460:01:48

So, Gwyn, I know that you're retired,

0:01:480:01:51

but tell me a little bit about your previous job.

0:01:510:01:54

My main job was being a policeman for the last 30 years, up to 1998.

0:01:540:01:58

I ended up in a crime prevention office around the island here.

0:01:580:02:02

And one of the nicest things I had happen to me there was, I had a

0:02:020:02:06

youth crime prevention panel, and they won a major award down in London,

0:02:060:02:11

and I was presented by Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne,

0:02:110:02:14

which was a great achievement for these kids,

0:02:140:02:17

which shows us not all kids are bad.

0:02:170:02:19

So, Gwyn, how do you spend your retirement?

0:02:190:02:22

I did run the, or was chairman of the local football club in the

0:02:220:02:26

village down the road here called Gaerwen, and I did that for a number of years.

0:02:260:02:31

And I like a bit of sea angling as well.

0:02:310:02:33

-So never a dull moment?

-Never a dull moment, always something to do.

0:02:330:02:36

Right. Sian, tell me a little bit more about your life.

0:02:360:02:39

I'm a mum of three. I did have a hairdressing salon and I gave it up

0:02:390:02:43

about 14, 15 years ago to become a mum.

0:02:430:02:45

I've just gone back into it for the last year, and it's really,

0:02:450:02:50

really busy. It's taken off really well.

0:02:500:02:52

Do you ever get any spare time? And if you do, how do you fill that?

0:02:520:02:54

I think I'm following in his footsteps.

0:02:540:02:56

I'm also chair of a local football club in Abergele.

0:02:560:02:59

I also do like to bake, and I do my nan's traditional Bara brith recipe.

0:02:590:03:05

And is it one of those things you spread with sort of butter, or...

0:03:050:03:08

Well, I don't put butter on, but I must admit, everybody says,

0:03:080:03:12

"It's lovely with butter, isn't it?" And when they say that, I'm like, "I have to have a piece with butter."

0:03:120:03:16

And what about your antique knowledge?

0:03:160:03:18

My... Ooh, minimal.

0:03:180:03:20

Yeah. So what's the team plan? What's the tactics?

0:03:200:03:24

My plan is to spend very, very...

0:03:240:03:26

I'm a bit tight with the money.

0:03:260:03:28

I'd probably spend high.

0:03:280:03:29

-OK. All right.

-Whoops!

0:03:290:03:31

Well, hopefully you'll find a sort of a happy medium.

0:03:310:03:33

-I'm sure we will.

-Oh, we'll agree on something.

0:03:330:03:35

-I'm sure we will.

-Yeah, yeah.

-So, good luck.

-Thank you.

0:03:350:03:38

I'm turning my attention to the Blue team, Rob and Katie.

0:03:380:03:40

So, Rob, tell me, what do you do for a living?

0:03:400:03:43

I work full-time as a youth pastor, so I work for a church in Liverpool.

0:03:430:03:47

It depends on the day what I'm doing,

0:03:470:03:49

so I can work in schools which can involve mentoring young people one-to-one,

0:03:490:03:53

or working with different groups of young people,

0:03:530:03:55

or perhaps on our premises running different youth clubs, perhaps.

0:03:550:03:58

So, yeah, it's...very interesting.

0:03:580:04:01

When it comes to sport, what's your game?

0:04:010:04:03

-Football.

-Yeah.

-Yeah, so I'm a big Liverpool fan.

0:04:030:04:06

So it pains me today to be wearing blue, but there we go.

0:04:070:04:10

-What can you do?

-Yeah.

0:04:100:04:11

ERIC LAUGHS

0:04:110:04:13

So, Katie, how do you fill the days?

0:04:130:04:16

Well, I've got three, or we've got three beautiful girls,

0:04:160:04:18

so they keep me busy. It's like a full-time job.

0:04:180:04:21

But beside that, I actually work alongside Rob.

0:04:210:04:24

But I actually do the children's work in our church, which, again,

0:04:240:04:27

is just really, really busy, but it's great and I love it.

0:04:270:04:30

What about spare time?

0:04:300:04:32

-I mean, how do you fill that?

-In my spare time, I love to sew,

0:04:320:04:34

so I like to sew things from bunting and cushions.

0:04:340:04:37

But it's a quite, quite a quick and unique way that I sew,

0:04:370:04:41

so I can draw pictures on my sewing machine with a special needle.

0:04:410:04:44

So I can applique camper vans and all sorts of things, so that looks really cool.

0:04:440:04:48

What about the world of antiques?

0:04:480:04:51

Yeah. Well, we wouldn't say we've got a lot of knowledge of

0:04:510:04:54

antiques, to be honest with you, but we go to a lot of car-boot sales,

0:04:540:04:58

a lot of charity shops,

0:04:580:05:00

and have filled our home with quite a few different things.

0:05:000:05:03

-So, yeah.

-What's the plan?

0:05:030:05:05

We think maybe not spend too much.

0:05:060:05:09

-But then again...

-Not too much, but if you see something...

0:05:090:05:11

-That's right.

-I don't know. If you see something, then you're

0:05:110:05:14

like... But I think it's in between, isn't it?

0:05:140:05:16

-Yeah, we'll see what happens.

-Right.

0:05:160:05:17

-OK. So before you can spend, you're going to need some money, aren't you?

-Yeah.

-Yes.

0:05:170:05:21

-So there you are, £300, Blue team.

-Thank you.

0:05:210:05:23

-Not to leave you out, Reds, there's your £300.

-Thank you.

0:05:230:05:27

So this is where you go off and you meet your relative experts.

0:05:270:05:30

So I'll see you later.

0:05:300:05:31

-Great. Thank you.

-Thank you!

0:05:310:05:32

Well, it strikes me that we've got two very evenly matched teams here

0:05:320:05:36

today, so it could be that we're in for something of a close call.

0:05:360:05:39

So, with £300 at the ready, all our teams need now are their experts.

0:05:400:05:45

Looking to snap up a profit for the Reds, it's...

0:05:470:05:50

And just the ticket for the Blues, it's...

0:05:520:05:55

So, Gwyn, what are we looking for today?

0:05:570:05:59

Well, you know, Thomas, I'm looking for some old toys.

0:05:590:06:02

Something, people might say, "I had one of them at home."

0:06:020:06:05

-Right.

-And cuff links.

0:06:050:06:07

-Something functional.

-Silver.

0:06:070:06:09

-Silver?

-Trinket-y, Chinese-y.

0:06:090:06:11

-Something small, a piece of jewellery or trinket-y.

-OK.

0:06:110:06:15

Chinese, functional, silver, garden stuff. I don't know!

0:06:150:06:19

Reds, Blues, your 60 minutes starts now.

0:06:190:06:22

BIG GONG SOUND EFFECT

0:06:220:06:25

-Let's go!

-THEY LAUGH

0:06:250:06:27

-Let's go.

-Let's go.

-THEY LAUGH

0:06:270:06:29

With shopping lists that long,

0:06:290:06:31

it's a good thing that this antiques fair

0:06:310:06:33

has over 250 stalls and plenty to choose from.

0:06:330:06:37

And Gwyn is already on the hunt for the cuff links.

0:06:370:06:40

Why the cuff link obsession?

0:06:400:06:42

I bought a pair for £3 in a charity shop...

0:06:420:06:47

THOMAS LAUGHS

0:06:470:06:48

-..and I've seen them on Bargain Hunt for £60.

-Go, let's go.

-Does this happen all the time?

0:06:480:06:52

I think Sian has heard this story a thousand times before, Thomas.

0:06:520:06:56

Meanwhile, the Blues aren't hanging around.

0:06:560:06:58

They've already started the hunt for their silver item.

0:06:580:07:01

Are these sugar things?

0:07:010:07:03

Sugar nips, or sugar tongs.

0:07:030:07:05

-Oh, yeah, OK.

-Ooh!

-Yes.

0:07:050:07:06

Now those are very decorative, aren't they?

0:07:080:07:10

Now, where's the...? There's the silver mark.

0:07:110:07:14

-How much are they?

-35.

0:07:140:07:17

-Little bit steep.

-Little bit steep.

0:07:170:07:19

-So, something to think about?

-I think so, we know it's here.

-Should we think about it, yeah?

0:07:190:07:23

-Yes.

-I think we should.

-I mean, it's early days, isn't it?

-It is early days.

-I think so.

-Yeah.

0:07:230:07:27

The first minute!

0:07:270:07:28

Caroline's right, Blues, you've still got plenty of time.

0:07:280:07:31

It's great to see such eager teams.

0:07:310:07:33

Now, has Gwyn found something he's willing to splash out on?

0:07:340:07:38

Yeah, I quite like the fountain.

0:07:380:07:40

-So do I.

-Do you like the fountain?

0:07:400:07:41

-Not really, no.

-No, it's not quite your cup of tea.

0:07:410:07:44

No, I'm after a bit more blingy.

0:07:440:07:46

I don't think Gwyn's listening to you, Sian.

0:07:460:07:48

How much have we got on the...

0:07:480:07:50

..fountain, please?

0:07:510:07:52

-I'll take...

-It's got a bit of damage on the top.

0:07:520:07:55

-It's broken there.

-I'll take 20.

0:07:550:07:56

Take 20, and that'll be rock-bottom.

0:07:560:07:59

Could you go down to 15?

0:07:590:08:01

No. ERIC: Oh, Sian's not impressed.

0:08:010:08:03

In between?

0:08:030:08:04

-18.

-Oh...!

0:08:050:08:08

18?

0:08:080:08:10

Your call.

0:08:100:08:11

What do you mean, it's our call?!

0:08:110:08:13

-Well, we've only just started.

-You're in this together!

-Deal, deal.

0:08:130:08:16

-Look at him, he's just...

-Oh!

-Deal!

0:08:160:08:19

Thank you. ERIC: Too late, Sian - Dad's called it.

0:08:190:08:21

A steal, £18.

0:08:210:08:23

-Thank you very much.

-£18. That's nothing, isn't it?

0:08:230:08:26

£18 for your fountain.

0:08:260:08:27

-First item down.

-Fantastic.

-Let's move on.

0:08:290:08:32

-I don't think I'm going to let him be in charge of anything now.

-No!

0:08:330:08:36

Well done, Reds. One item in the bag and only three minutes gone.

0:08:360:08:40

But no time to rest,

0:08:400:08:41

and the Blues are still looking for that piece of silver.

0:08:410:08:45

Oh, wow! That's a bit...

0:08:450:08:47

Is that silver or is that plated?

0:08:470:08:49

-No, it's...

-It's not.

-No, it's not.

0:08:490:08:52

-It's not silver, it's not plated.

-Looks like a...

0:08:520:08:56

-It's not very good.

-No.

0:08:560:08:58

Very diplomatic, Caroline.

0:08:580:09:00

So Rob and Katie's silver hunt continues,

0:09:000:09:03

whilst the Reds don't seem to be slowing down.

0:09:030:09:05

So, I quite like these decorative tins.

0:09:070:09:10

-I agree.

-And these are German.

0:09:100:09:12

And after the war, there was a bit of rationing in Germany,

0:09:120:09:15

as well as in Britain.

0:09:150:09:17

You'd make a big cake, you put it in your tin, a quantity of cakes,

0:09:170:09:22

and then you'd lock it up for the week.

0:09:220:09:24

Perfect for a baker like Sian.

0:09:240:09:26

I need this in my house.

0:09:260:09:28

-Do you?

-My daughter just keeps raiding the Bara brith.

0:09:280:09:30

All the tops have gone.

0:09:300:09:32

-The Bara brith?

-The Bara brith.

-What's that?

0:09:320:09:34

Welsh fruitcake.

0:09:340:09:36

And do you feed the fruitcake?

0:09:360:09:38

-No.

-You don't sort of constantly put things on it?

0:09:380:09:40

Sometimes at Christmas, I might...

0:09:400:09:42

-Yeah, feed it with a bit of...

-..add a little bit of sherry, or...

0:09:420:09:45

-..bit of sherry.

-Yeah.

0:09:450:09:46

But this has got all the German national costumes

0:09:460:09:48

of the various areas and regions.

0:09:480:09:51

I like that, actually.

0:09:510:09:54

And there's another one here with...

0:09:540:09:56

..which is, um, very, sort of,

0:09:560:09:58

in the manner of Tyrolean painted furniture.

0:09:580:10:01

-There was a key on that one, wasn't there?

-This is a key?

0:10:010:10:04

-That's a key one.

-No, no, no.

-That's a key one.

-There's a key.

0:10:040:10:06

And, look, there's another a wooden one there, with another painted...

0:10:060:10:09

I quite like that one as well.

0:10:090:10:10

I think we want to inquire about these, don't you?

0:10:100:10:13

I think so. Yeah.

0:10:130:10:14

So, sir, tell me.

0:10:140:10:15

How much are all three?

0:10:150:10:17

Well, I normally do £20 a piece.

0:10:170:10:19

-Yes.

-So would 45 for the three be acceptable?

0:10:190:10:22

35?

0:10:220:10:24

£30, then.

0:10:240:10:25

-I can't do 30.

-Ooh!

-He's so naughty, your daddy, isn't he?

0:10:250:10:29

But do you know what, I'd... 35, I think.

0:10:290:10:31

I'll do 35, that's not a problem.

0:10:310:10:32

Would you meet us halfway between the 30 and then the 35, on £32?

0:10:320:10:36

-Well, shall we say 33?

-£33.

0:10:360:10:38

Then it's £11 each.

0:10:380:10:39

-I like that.

-I like that.

0:10:390:10:41

-I'm happy as well.

-You're happy with that?

-I am very happy with that.

0:10:410:10:44

-God, you're tight!

-I know I am!

-He is, isn't he?!

-You're tight!

0:10:440:10:47

HE LAUGHS

0:10:470:10:48

I've never met anybody so mean!

0:10:480:10:50

ALL LAUGH

0:10:500:10:52

-Can we shake at...

-£100.

-..at 33?

0:10:520:10:54

-So wonderful.

-Lovely. Thank you.

0:10:540:10:56

They may be thrifty, Thomas, but they're also fast.

0:10:570:10:59

That's the second item bought with only ten minutes gone.

0:10:590:11:02

Piece of cake!

0:11:020:11:04

But what's this? Have the Blues spotted the functional item Rob had

0:11:040:11:08

on his shopping list?

0:11:080:11:09

I love this.

0:11:090:11:10

-Oh!

-Do you know, I like that, too?

-Yeah.

-I love it.

0:11:100:11:13

Oh, good. Now, what do you like about it?

0:11:150:11:17

I just like it cos it's really quirky.

0:11:170:11:19

Yeah, it's quite different.

0:11:190:11:20

And I actually would have that on our fireplace.

0:11:200:11:22

-I would buy that!

-Would you polish it, or would you get Rob to?

0:11:220:11:25

-I wouldn't polish it. I quite like it the way it is.

-What's polish?!

0:11:250:11:27

Excuse me!

0:11:270:11:28

It's lovely. It's an arts and craft design.

0:11:280:11:31

You see these lovely copper...

0:11:310:11:33

-Oh, I love it.

-Yeah.

-..rivets here.

0:11:330:11:36

-I love it.

-That is beautiful, and this hammered effect.

-Love it.

0:11:360:11:39

Would you give 25?

0:11:390:11:41

-"Would you give 25?!"

-Would you take 25?

0:11:410:11:44

-No. That's a no for that, I'm afraid.

-OK.

-39.

0:11:440:11:48

Ooh, I don't know.

0:11:480:11:50

-It's a gorgeous piece.

-It's gorgeous.

0:11:500:11:52

-It's a nice piece.

-It's nice.

-It is nice.

0:11:520:11:54

It's very unusual.

0:11:540:11:55

-It is, it is unusual.

-But is it...

0:11:550:11:57

I think it would be better if it was, if you'd stuck at the 30

0:11:570:12:00

-without adding the nine to it.

-30!

0:12:000:12:03

-I can't.

-No?

-You can't?

-I can't.

0:12:030:12:06

-The lowest I can go to is 37 and that's it.

-Yeah.

-37.

-37.

0:12:060:12:10

-Ooh!

-What do you think, what do you think?

-Shall we do it? I really like it.

0:12:100:12:13

-Go on.

-Do you really like it?

-Yes. I love it!

0:12:130:12:14

-Good.

-Brilliant!

-Thank you. Thank you.

0:12:140:12:17

Phew! That negotiation nearly went off the boil.

0:12:170:12:20

Well done, Blues. First item down after 21 minutes.

0:12:200:12:24

Back with the Reds,

0:12:240:12:26

and there seems to be disagreements over the team's spending tactics.

0:12:260:12:30

Well, I think you want a piece of jewellery.

0:12:300:12:32

Well, I think I'd like something, yeah.

0:12:320:12:34

We don't want to spend too much, you know.

0:12:340:12:36

Oh, we've not spent much at all!

0:12:360:12:37

-Honestly!

-Nice cheap pair of cuff links.

0:12:370:12:40

-No, ring.

-Nine carat gold for about a fiver.

-Hmm, bit of bling

0:12:400:12:45

-or a little trinket-y something.

-What planet are you on, Gwyn?!

0:12:450:12:48

Has been done, has been done.

0:12:480:12:50

We sort of... Yeah. We need something...

0:12:500:12:52

I think we do, I think we do.

0:12:520:12:53

-..blingy.

-Let's go inside.

-Let's go.

0:12:530:12:55

-I'm afraid...

-And leave you with a pound, then? Will that be all right?

0:12:550:12:58

-That's perfect, I like that. Come on.

-GWYN LAUGHS

0:12:580:13:00

That's decided, then.

0:13:000:13:02

Time for the Reds to retire inside and start spending big.

0:13:020:13:06

Still outside, the Blues' search for silver is proving a little testing.

0:13:060:13:10

This one is a little scent bottle, smelling salt bottle,

0:13:100:13:15

but there's a silver lid on it...

0:13:150:13:17

-Yeah.

-..and glass base. I mean, people collect those still.

0:13:170:13:20

-Mmm.

-But it's been damaged.

0:13:200:13:22

Has it got the silver mark on there?

0:13:220:13:23

Yes. I believe so, I believe it's the S. Is that right?

0:13:230:13:26

-So, has it got the lion?

-Yes.

0:13:260:13:29

And what is the town mark?

0:13:290:13:31

-I'm testing you here.

-London?

0:13:310:13:33

-Oh, gosh.

-You haven't looked at it!

0:13:330:13:35

-Oh!

-No! You're not guessing!

0:13:350:13:37

You've got your hands full today, Caroline.

0:13:400:13:42

So the search for the silver continues.

0:13:420:13:45

Inside, Thomas is also quizzing the Reds about their antiques knowledge.

0:13:450:13:50

-What do you think that is?

-No idea.

0:13:510:13:54

If I do that, does that give you any clue?

0:13:540:13:57

It's not for sucking boils, is it?

0:13:570:13:59

-What are you saying, for sucking boils?

-Dear me. Cuff links, sucking boils...

0:14:000:14:04

I mean, honestly, cuff links, sucking boils?!

0:14:040:14:07

-Something to do with smoke?

-No.

-No!

-It's a toddy.

0:14:070:14:11

-Oh!

-Put it into a decanter or a bottle or a quantity of liquid.

0:14:110:14:15

-Oh.

-Yeah, it fills up...

0:14:150:14:17

HE IMITATES LIQUID GLUGGING

0:14:170:14:19

..over the glass, out it comes.

0:14:190:14:22

-Interesting.

-Never seen one.

0:14:220:14:23

It's in...

0:14:240:14:26

lead crystal,

0:14:260:14:28

made in this country about 1820.

0:14:280:14:34

Hand-blown, quite a stylish thing.

0:14:340:14:37

I love the rings on here.

0:14:370:14:38

Just a proper antique.

0:14:380:14:40

So how much have you got on the toddy measure?

0:14:400:14:42

-100.

-Do you think we could sort of bend you a little bit more?

0:14:420:14:47

Ratchet you a little bit more?

0:14:470:14:48

To £90.

0:14:480:14:49

£90.

0:14:490:14:51

Now, one caveat.

0:14:510:14:53

All of that...

0:14:530:14:55

Is it going to make a profit at auction?

0:14:550:14:57

-It's a gamble.

-It is a big gamble.

0:14:570:14:59

It's a proper antique.

0:14:590:15:01

85? Can you come another fiver?

0:15:010:15:03

Worth a try, Gwyn.

0:15:030:15:05

-It is an auction, and...

-Go on, then.

0:15:050:15:06

Go on, then! 85.

0:15:060:15:08

-Shall we go for it?

-Do you want to go for it?

-Shall we?

0:15:080:15:10

-Yes, yes.

-Yeah?

-We will.

-Positive?

-Thank you.

-Oh, my God!

0:15:100:15:14

A big spend from Gwyn,

0:15:140:15:16

and that's the third and final item bought, all in 27 minutes.

0:15:160:15:20

I cannot quite believe it, that we've got you

0:15:200:15:22

to spend £85 on an antique.

0:15:220:15:24

-It's amazing.

-So I'm going to put that down.

0:15:240:15:26

-Third and final item bought.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:15:260:15:28

Time for a cup of tea.

0:15:280:15:29

-Marvellous.

-Outside?

-Spot on.

0:15:290:15:31

On you go, well done.

0:15:310:15:33

Whilst the Reds head off for a cuppa,

0:15:330:15:35

the Blues are still sifting through the silver,

0:15:350:15:38

looking for their second item.

0:15:380:15:39

Now, that one, it goes with salts, doesn't it?

0:15:400:15:43

There's four salts.

0:15:430:15:45

-Is that right?

-That's right, yeah.

-And the mustard.

0:15:450:15:47

-Oh, OK.

-And how much are they?

0:15:470:15:49

-For the lot?

-Yeah.

0:15:490:15:51

I could do 90 quid on them.

0:15:510:15:54

-Right. 90 quid.

-Ooh!

0:15:540:15:55

ERIC: That's a lot of silver for your money, Blues.

0:15:550:15:58

But Katie's only just got started.

0:15:580:16:00

What is your, like, what is your

0:16:000:16:02

best, like, bottom, bottom...

0:16:020:16:05

LAUGHTER

0:16:050:16:06

-Bottom!

-75.

0:16:060:16:09

-75.

-How's that?

0:16:090:16:10

Ooh, I don't know.

0:16:100:16:12

-You don't think so?

-No, I don't think so.

0:16:120:16:14

-Not for the five.

-Not for the five.

0:16:140:16:16

Is Katie ready to walk away from this?

0:16:160:16:19

DEALER: Tell you how I'll do it,

0:16:190:16:20

I'll do 60 quid, and that's best, right?

0:16:200:16:22

-Ooh!

-That's going to give you a fair chance.

0:16:220:16:25

It's certainly silver, and as we would want it.

0:16:250:16:28

Have a look at the mark, yeah.

0:16:280:16:29

-It's definitely silver.

-Yeah.

0:16:290:16:31

-And there's the spoon, is the spoon silver?

-Oh, yeah.

0:16:310:16:35

Yeah. Now, that's a mustard spoon,

0:16:350:16:37

and a mustard spoon has an elongated bowl.

0:16:370:16:39

-And the salt spoons have a round...

-Right.

-..bowl.

0:16:390:16:43

So that's how you know it's a mustard one.

0:16:430:16:45

Would you take 50?

0:16:450:16:47

No, I can't. I've gone down to 60.

0:16:470:16:49

-Yeah.

-60's me best, I'm afraid.

0:16:490:16:51

-Your call.

-What do you think?

0:16:520:16:54

Your call, what do you think?

0:16:540:16:55

I'm stepping out of this. I...

0:16:550:16:58

Meet me halfway.

0:16:580:16:59

-55.

-55.

0:16:590:17:00

-Oh, I don't know! Do you think...

-Can't help you here.

0:17:020:17:04

Is it, is it, is it...

0:17:040:17:06

-53 and we're done.

-53.

-Go on, then, 53.

-Oh!

0:17:060:17:10

-Oh!

-Yes!

-Well done!

0:17:100:17:12

Oh, thank you.

0:17:120:17:14

That is great.

0:17:140:17:15

Nice bartering there, Blues.

0:17:150:17:17

That's just secured your second item and your search for silver in one

0:17:170:17:21

move. Two down, one to go, and 25 minutes still to spare.

0:17:210:17:26

Meanwhile, Thomas and the Reds are having a catch-up over a cuppa.

0:17:270:17:32

I'm pleased about that last one.

0:17:320:17:33

-You like it, do you?

-I thought that was funny.

-It's funny, isn't it?

0:17:330:17:37

-I can't believe we got you to spend some money!

-I know!

0:17:370:17:40

Well, well done, team.

0:17:400:17:41

-Yeah, brilliant.

-I think you've bought very well.

0:17:410:17:44

I think those Blues are going to be worried.

0:17:440:17:46

So here's to the downfall in Blues.

0:17:460:17:49

-Cheers!

-And to the experts, cheers.

0:17:490:17:51

-Oh, no, I don't know about that!

-Cheers.

0:17:510:17:53

Whilst the Reds have time to sit around and chat,

0:17:530:17:56

are Rob and Katie any closer to that final item?

0:17:560:17:59

Rob likes chairs.

0:17:590:18:00

Why, cos you sits down a lot? My husband does that.

0:18:000:18:03

-I just think there's something about them.

-Mmm.

0:18:030:18:05

What do you mean, there's something about them?

0:18:050:18:08

-Just...

-That is a lovely chair.

0:18:080:18:10

-That is a nice chair.

-Just think,

0:18:100:18:11

-who's sat in that chair? Whose house has it been in?

-Rob, sit down.

0:18:110:18:14

HE LAUGHS

0:18:140:18:15

-Try it out.

-Rob's sat in that chair.

0:18:150:18:18

Is it good?

0:18:180:18:19

-Well, one collapsed underneath me a few months ago, so...

-No!

-Yeah.

0:18:190:18:23

-Just completely, just went...

-No!

-I know. It was funny.

0:18:230:18:26

Is that chair still all right, then?

0:18:260:18:28

-It's been recently revarnished, I would say.

-Yeah.

0:18:280:18:32

Looks a little bit shiny.

0:18:320:18:33

-Yes.

-Yeah. I don't know.

0:18:330:18:35

And that looks like to me like a polyurethane varnish.

0:18:350:18:38

-Yeah, I don't...

-It's a shame.

-It is a shame.

0:18:380:18:40

-I would rather it be waxed.

-I don't like it.

0:18:400:18:42

It hasn't got a good pattern.

0:18:420:18:43

-Let's go, I don't like it.

-What about riding boots, do you like these?

0:18:430:18:46

No, I don't like horses.

0:18:460:18:47

You don't like horses? What's wrong with horses?

0:18:470:18:49

They're all right to look at, and I'm not a great horse rider.

0:18:490:18:53

-OK.

-No!

-So it's a no to the riding boots.

-No to the riding boots.

0:18:530:18:58

Oh, dear, the clock is starting to go up away from you now, Blues.

0:18:580:19:02

Time to saddle up and head indoors.

0:19:020:19:04

Oh, that's lovely.

0:19:050:19:07

-With the wooden strapping.

-Look at the small one, as well!

0:19:070:19:10

-Aw.

-Look at the big one.

-Oh, gosh.

0:19:100:19:12

-Look at the medium-size one!

-Look at the leather one.

-Wow!

0:19:120:19:15

Look at that one, that one's got, like, a...

0:19:150:19:17

Initials, somebody's initials.

0:19:170:19:18

A lot of people use these now as coffee tables, with the flat tops.

0:19:180:19:23

These with the wooden strapping,

0:19:230:19:25

-people tend to put a glass top on...

-Right.

-Right.

0:19:250:19:28

..onto those.

0:19:280:19:29

Thing is, it looks good.

0:19:290:19:31

-It looks fantastic.

-It's functional.

-And it's functional,

0:19:310:19:33

which is what you wanted, isn't it?

0:19:330:19:35

And it'll have an age to it as well, presumably.

0:19:350:19:37

It has got an age. That will be Edwardian, I would think.

0:19:370:19:40

-Oh, wow!

-Maybe up to 1920.

0:19:400:19:43

-How much is it?

-Say 85.

0:19:430:19:46

-How much?

-85.

0:19:460:19:47

-Ooh! Could we get it for 50?

-It's rich, dark and a bit expensive.

0:19:470:19:51

So, could this be the Blues' third item?

0:19:510:19:54

It's all down to Caroline's negotiating skills.

0:19:540:19:57

So, what's he said?

0:20:000:20:01

He's said... Well, there was a bit of a domestic going on because he said one thing,

0:20:010:20:05

-his wife said another thing.

-Oh, right.

0:20:050:20:06

But he's he won the day and he said 60.

0:20:060:20:10

-BOTH: OK.

-Do you think we could get him down to 55?

0:20:110:20:13

-Shall I go and ask him?

-Go on.

0:20:130:20:14

£55 would be a huge discount.

0:20:140:20:17

So, can Katie pull it off?

0:20:170:20:19

-50.

-No, no, no.

-55?

0:20:200:20:24

No, definitely not.

0:20:240:20:25

-59.

-OK, 59.

0:20:250:20:28

Yes! Oh, great.

0:20:280:20:29

Thank you.

0:20:290:20:31

Nice work, Katie. Every pound counts on Bargain Hunt.

0:20:310:20:34

-I did it.

-You did what?

0:20:340:20:35

-I did it for 59, £59.

-59?

0:20:350:20:37

-Yeah, 59.

-You mean you've done it already?

0:20:370:20:40

KATIE LAUGHS

0:20:400:20:42

-That's it, then?

-Yes.

0:20:420:20:44

That's it, Rob. So, with both teams finished early, I'm calling time.

0:20:450:20:49

Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:20:510:20:53

Gwyn and Sian got the stone fountain for £18.

0:20:550:20:57

Then the three 1950s German cake tins for £33.

0:21:010:21:04

And finally, the Regency glass toddy measure for £85.

0:21:060:21:11

So, Thomas, I mean, almost at the speed of sound, these two.

0:21:110:21:14

It was really at the speed of sound!

0:21:140:21:16

Brilliant, utterly brilliant.

0:21:160:21:18

So, Gwyn, what was your favourite item today?

0:21:180:21:22

My favourite was the first one in,

0:21:220:21:25

the boy and fish fountain.

0:21:250:21:27

And a good deal as well.

0:21:270:21:28

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-What's the one item that's going to give you the biggest

0:21:280:21:31

-profit?

-I think it's going to be the fountain.

0:21:310:21:34

-Do you?

-I think so.

-OK, strength in your own convictions there.

0:21:340:21:37

-That's right.

-OK. What about you, Sian?

0:21:370:21:39

How do you see things panning out when it comes to your favourite item?

0:21:390:21:42

Well, my favourite, I think I'm sort of going for the one we got second, really,

0:21:420:21:46

which are the cake tins with the locks on.

0:21:460:21:50

And what about the biggest profit, though? Come on.

0:21:500:21:52

Well, I do think that may be our cheeky little last one.

0:21:520:21:55

-My...

-It's a toddy lifter.

-Oh, right.

0:21:550:21:58

Oh, quite rare, quite rare.

0:21:580:22:00

So, are you happy with your spend?

0:22:000:22:01

-Very happy.

-And how much was that spend?

0:22:010:22:03

-Total of 136.

-136.

0:22:030:22:05

So you're going to hand over to me...

0:22:050:22:07

-164.

-..164. There we go.

0:22:070:22:11

-Doesn't stay in my hand for very long. It goes over to Thomas.

-Thank you.

0:22:110:22:14

Thomas, £164.

0:22:140:22:16

That's a tidy sum, isn't it?

0:22:160:22:17

It is a tidy sum,

0:22:170:22:18

and I think we will be investing it in something which you really wanted

0:22:180:22:24

-but we didn't manage to get.

-A bit of bling.

-A bit of bling.

-Ooh!

-OK.

0:22:240:22:27

Well, while Thomas goes off to find that bit of bling as a bonus buy,

0:22:270:22:32

let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.

0:22:320:22:35

Rob and Katie purchased the arts and crafts copper kettle for £37.

0:22:350:22:38

They secured the silver salts and mustard pot for £53...

0:22:410:22:44

..and spent £59 on the suitcase as their final buy.

0:22:470:22:51

So, Caroline, it was going quite swimmingly well, wasn't it?

0:22:520:22:56

It was indeed,

0:22:560:22:58

until Katie went off and decided to do the final negotiation on the last

0:22:580:23:02

item all by herself, without sharing it with Rob.

0:23:020:23:07

Oh, I see.

0:23:070:23:08

-But tell me, Rob, what was your favourite item today?

-I think it would have to be the case.

0:23:080:23:12

-The case.

-Yes. The suitcase. I really like that.

0:23:120:23:15

So some useful haggling going on there, yeah.

0:23:150:23:17

-Yeah, I think so.

-Oh, no!

0:23:170:23:19

ALL LAUGH

0:23:190:23:21

Well, despite that being your favourite,

0:23:210:23:23

which of the three do think is going to give you the biggest profit?

0:23:230:23:26

-I think the case.

-Yeah?

-Yeah, I like the suitcase, as well.

0:23:260:23:29

-You do?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:23:290:23:30

So Katie, you agree on the case being the one that's going to give you the biggest profit?

0:23:300:23:34

-Yes.

-But what was your favourite item?

0:23:340:23:36

My favourite item was the copper kettle.

0:23:360:23:39

-Oh, yes.

-Very, very quirky.

0:23:390:23:41

Just love it.

0:23:410:23:42

Just really big and bulky and...

0:23:420:23:45

-Tactile.

-Yeah.

0:23:450:23:46

I really liked it, really liked it.

0:23:460:23:48

So what was the big spend today?

0:23:480:23:49

£149.

0:23:490:23:51

So you're going to cross my palm with £151, yes?

0:23:510:23:56

-There we go.

-OK.

0:23:560:23:57

-Caroline...

-Thank you.

-..£151 for a bonus buy.

0:23:570:24:00

-Ooh!

-Excited?

-I am!

0:24:020:24:04

-What are you going to buy?

-Ooh, you'll have to wait and see.

0:24:040:24:07

OK. Well, while Caroline makes up her mind on the bonus buy,

0:24:070:24:13

I'm off to a place of some great interest.

0:24:130:24:16

Today, I've headed over the Welsh border to Bunbury Mill in Cheshire,

0:24:220:24:26

to unearth the story behind this beautifully renovated water mill.

0:24:260:24:29

Situated close to the banks of the River Gowy,

0:24:310:24:33

this restored mill has milled most things from animal feed to flour,

0:24:330:24:37

and is one of only two working mills on the river.

0:24:370:24:40

This agriculturally rich area of Cheshire has a long history of milling,

0:24:430:24:47

dating back over 1,000 years.

0:24:470:24:50

In its heyday, the banks of the River Gowy were home to an estimated

0:24:500:24:54

20 water mills.

0:24:540:24:56

But over time, changes in agriculture, production processes,

0:24:560:25:00

and the arrival of cheaper foreign imports

0:25:000:25:02

saw the industry fall into decline.

0:25:020:25:05

And when a flood destroyed this mill in 1960, sadly, production stopped.

0:25:050:25:10

But it wasn't for long.

0:25:100:25:12

But over 50 years on, and the mill is still operational

0:25:120:25:16

thanks to the efforts of local people,

0:25:160:25:18

and in particular those members of the Bunbury Water Mill Trust.

0:25:180:25:23

And I'm here to meet one of the leading volunteers, Peter.

0:25:230:25:26

Lovely to meet you.

0:25:260:25:27

You too, Eric. Nice to have you here.

0:25:270:25:29

Tell me a little bit about how you've managed to restore

0:25:290:25:32

this remarkable water mill.

0:25:320:25:34

In 1960, there was a massive flood here that put the mill out of action

0:25:340:25:39

and it was going to be demolished.

0:25:390:25:41

But in the 1970s,

0:25:410:25:42

the local people in Bunbury persuaded North West Water to set up

0:25:420:25:47

a job creation scheme and restore it to working order again.

0:25:470:25:51

They did that. In 1977, it was opened as a heritage museum,

0:25:510:25:55

which it still is. And then later on in 2009, it was again closed down,

0:25:550:26:00

with no prospects for the future.

0:26:000:26:02

And, at that stage,

0:26:020:26:04

the local people again formed the Bunbury Water Mill Trust to operate

0:26:040:26:09

and run the mill and make it available to the public, with a team of volunteers.

0:26:090:26:13

Fascinating stuff, Peter.

0:26:130:26:14

-I'm keen to see what's going on in here.

-Great.

-So I'll follow you.

-Come on!

0:26:140:26:18

So, this is where it all starts.

0:26:260:26:28

And this is the...

0:26:280:26:29

enormous wheel.

0:26:290:26:31

That's right, Eric. It actually weighs about ten tonnes.

0:26:310:26:35

There isn't very much water in the River Gowy,

0:26:350:26:37

it's only a little stream, so this is an overshot wheel.

0:26:370:26:41

The water comes in at the top and it's not the force of the water that

0:26:410:26:45

drives the wheel around,

0:26:450:26:46

it's the weight of the water that fills the buckets

0:26:460:26:49

that takes it around.

0:26:490:26:51

The wheel is basically cast iron, but has got timber buckets on it.

0:26:510:26:54

There are 36 buckets, each made with three planks of wood.

0:26:540:26:58

But that will generate 16 horsepower, so we're told.

0:26:580:27:01

But I notice one thing.

0:27:010:27:03

Erm... It's not moving.

0:27:030:27:05

Well, no, cos the water's been turned off.

0:27:050:27:07

-Do you want to start it?

-I'd love to!

0:27:070:27:09

-Yes!

-Right, here you are, then.

0:27:090:27:11

Isn't that wonderful?

0:27:150:27:17

-So what happens next?

-Well, let's go and have a look at the actual mill stones over here.

-OK.

0:27:180:27:23

-Here we are.

-Oh, right.

0:27:230:27:25

So, what's happening here?

0:27:300:27:31

The grain goes into the hopper here, you can put some in if you like.

0:27:310:27:35

-Here we go.

-OK.

-There we are.

0:27:350:27:37

Into the hopper.

0:27:370:27:39

-That's it, lovely. And then the grain trickles down this sloping shoe...

-Yeah.

0:27:390:27:45

It goes into the eye in the centre of the wheel,

0:27:450:27:48

and the flour works its way out.

0:27:480:27:50

The flour comes to the outside.

0:27:500:27:52

-You can see the flour down there.

-I can see it.

0:27:520:27:54

And the flour goes down a chute, over the back here down to

0:27:540:27:57

the basement where it goes into the flour sack.

0:27:570:27:59

-OK. So can we go down and have a look at that?

-Sure, across here.

0:27:590:28:02

OK.

0:28:020:28:04

The water wheel is behind the big white wall behind me, so you can't see it from down here,

0:28:110:28:15

but it drives all this gearing that

0:28:150:28:18

eventually drives the shaft that

0:28:180:28:20

goes up through the floor here, and that's driving the millstone.

0:28:200:28:23

And it's going round faster than the water wheel is.

0:28:230:28:25

-Oh, right. So, having poured all the grain in...

-Yeah?

0:28:250:28:27

..it's now coming out here as ground flour.

0:28:270:28:30

-That's right, that's the flour that you've made.

-Really?!

0:28:300:28:32

-Let's have a...

-Have a feel of it and smell it.

0:28:320:28:36

Very distinctive, isn't it?

0:28:360:28:37

Yes, it is.

0:28:370:28:39

So, with the milling completed,

0:28:390:28:41

all that's left to do is to winch the sack of flour up to the top

0:28:410:28:44

floor, ready to be turned into bread.

0:28:440:28:47

-Great!

-Whoa!

0:28:560:28:57

-So there it is, the finished product.

-There it is.

0:28:570:29:00

Ready for delivery to the local baker.

0:29:000:29:02

Wonderful. Peter, thank you so much for everything.

0:29:020:29:05

It's fascinating stuff.

0:29:050:29:07

Well, let's now see if our teams can bag a profit at the auction.

0:29:070:29:12

Today's sale is in Nantwich, where I'm meeting auctioneer Chris Large.

0:29:160:29:20

Let's get down to business.

0:29:200:29:22

Let's talk about the Red team, which is Gwyn and Sian.

0:29:220:29:25

And their first object is this sort of composition stone fountain.

0:29:250:29:32

I think it's going to decorate any garden really nicely,

0:29:320:29:35

and it's already got that weathered look. I think the patina might help it.

0:29:350:29:39

I think, really, it's only going to make about 5, £10, this.

0:29:390:29:42

OK. Well, they paid £18 for it,

0:29:420:29:44

so I don't think they're going to be

0:29:440:29:46

-losing too much sleep on that one.

-No.

0:29:460:29:47

So, their second purchase is three cake tins.

0:29:470:29:52

Now, I say three. We're only showing two here because they are so big.

0:29:520:29:56

I'm assuming that these are what, in date?

0:29:560:29:58

I think these could be 1950s, 1960s, something like that.

0:29:580:30:01

Commercially, what do you reckon?

0:30:010:30:03

I think about 30-60 pounds.

0:30:030:30:05

-Ooh, right. Well, they paid 33 for the three.

-Did they?!

0:30:050:30:07

-So they're in with a real chance there...

-Yes.

-..of making a profit.

0:30:070:30:12

-And the third item is a toddy lifter, yes?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:30:120:30:16

I really like this piece.

0:30:160:30:17

-I do.

-It's got a really good colour to the glass.

-Mmm.

0:30:170:30:20

It shows that early lead glass.

0:30:200:30:21

I like the way it's cut, it's got that decanter shape.

0:30:210:30:24

I've estimated at 30-50 pounds,

0:30:240:30:26

I hope it's going to make more, though.

0:30:260:30:27

Yeah. So will they, cos they paid £85 for it.

0:30:270:30:30

But with the right collectors chasing it,

0:30:300:30:33

hey ho, in with a chance.

0:30:330:30:35

Well, having heard your verdict on those three items,

0:30:350:30:38

I think it's fair to say that they will probably need

0:30:380:30:40

Thomas' bonus buy.

0:30:400:30:41

So, let's find out what it is.

0:30:410:30:44

So, Gwyn and Sian, you left our

0:30:460:30:49

Thomas here £164 of bonus buy money.

0:30:490:30:53

So, Thomas, what did thou go forth and buyeth?

0:30:530:30:57

I know you wanted to buy some bling, so I bought you some bling.

0:30:570:31:00

So what we have here is an 18-carat gold

0:31:000:31:02

aqua and diamond ring with a...

0:31:020:31:05

not a matching brooch, but a gold brooch

0:31:050:31:08

-with aquas and half cut pearls in there.

-Right.

0:31:080:31:11

It's a pretty ring, isn't it?

0:31:110:31:13

-Pretty ring.

-Really pretty, and you get a bar brooch with it,

0:31:130:31:16

all rolled into one.

0:31:160:31:17

-What do you think of that?

-How much was it?

0:31:170:31:20

See, that's all you're interested in, isn't it?

0:31:200:31:22

That's all you care about...

0:31:220:31:23

ALL LAUGH

0:31:230:31:24

-..is the money.

-It's the money!

0:31:240:31:27

-How much do you think?

-80.

0:31:270:31:29

-A bit more than 80.

-105?

-£100.

0:31:290:31:32

SHE GASPS

0:31:320:31:33

-£100 for these.

-That's good.

0:31:330:31:35

-It is good, isn't it?

-It is. I would have thought that'd be more.

-Yeah, absolutely.

0:31:350:31:40

-Roughly how much do you think it would make?

-I think you're looking at 120, 180.

0:31:400:31:43

-So, a profit.

-Yeah. I would've thought so.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:31:430:31:46

-All right. So remember, you don't have to make your minds up now anyway.

-No.

0:31:460:31:50

Wait till you've sold your first three items, and then make your decision.

0:31:500:31:53

But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer had to say about

0:31:530:31:57

Thomas's bling buy.

0:31:570:31:59

I think it's a great present for a lady, isn't it?

0:32:010:32:03

Wouldn't she love that dress ring?

0:32:030:32:05

I mean, it's zircon, but it's got diamond chips round it. Real showy piece, isn't it?

0:32:050:32:08

It is showy, isn't it?

0:32:080:32:10

And thrown in, you've got a brooch. Brooches are not as popular nowadays, but thrown in, it's great.

0:32:100:32:14

I've estimated it at £80-120.

0:32:140:32:17

Thomas went and paid £100, so...

0:32:170:32:18

-Brilliant.

-..there's a real chance there, isn't there?

-Yeah, yeah.

-OK.

0:32:180:32:22

So, that's the Reds done, now to the Blues.

0:32:220:32:25

And this is Rob and Katie.

0:32:250:32:26

Erm...

0:32:260:32:27

And the first item is this amazing copper kettle.

0:32:270:32:30

Yeah, gorgeous, isn't it?

0:32:300:32:31

-It is.

-Great shape.

0:32:310:32:33

You do come across this sort of triangular form, and I have seen

0:32:330:32:36

this sort of industrial look before in the arts and crafts kettles.

0:32:360:32:39

They do appear at auction.

0:32:390:32:41

-What do you think?

-I've seen these make about £20-40 quite often.

0:32:410:32:44

They paid 37 for it.

0:32:440:32:46

They may be onto a profit, but don't hold your breath.

0:32:460:32:48

-No.

-OK. So, their second purchase -

0:32:480:32:51

four silver table salts and a mustard pot and cover.

0:32:510:32:55

They're Joseph Gloucester, Birmingham, 1911,

0:32:550:32:58

all nicely hallmarked up.

0:32:580:33:00

So, estimate?

0:33:000:33:01

I've estimated these at £30-50.

0:33:010:33:04

They paid £53, so I think it's £53 well spent.

0:33:040:33:08

But we'll find out later.

0:33:080:33:11

So, third item.

0:33:110:33:13

-I mean, that's quite a trunk, isn't it?

-It's a super one, isn't it?

-Mmm.

-Yeah.

0:33:130:33:17

It's built to last. It's built to withstand cargo ships, aeroplanes,

0:33:170:33:20

and yet it's in such great condition.

0:33:200:33:22

You know, I mean, look at this lovely patina, lovely honey colour to it.

0:33:220:33:26

I've conservatively estimated this at £20-30.

0:33:260:33:29

-I'm hoping it's going to make a bit more than that.

-Let's hope so.

0:33:290:33:32

-I mean, they paid £59 for it.

-Mmm-hmm.

0:33:320:33:35

I think it's fair to say that our Blue team would be well advised to

0:33:350:33:39

-look at their bonus buy.

-Yeah.

0:33:390:33:40

So now let's look at Caroline's bonus buy.

0:33:400:33:44

So, Rob and Katie,

0:33:450:33:46

you left our Caroline here £151 to go out and find a bonus buy.

0:33:460:33:51

Caroline, reveal all!

0:33:510:33:54

KATIE GASPS

0:33:540:33:55

Oh, that is so cute.

0:33:550:33:57

-I love it.

-Do you know what it is?

0:33:570:33:59

Is it a spoon?

0:33:590:34:01

It is a spoon, well done, well done!

0:34:010:34:04

But for what purpose?

0:34:040:34:06

-Sugar.

-No.

0:34:060:34:09

-Any other thoughts?

-Salt.

-Salt, you're right.

0:34:090:34:12

It could be salt, mustard, but it's lined with gilt,

0:34:120:34:17

which will protect the silver underneath.

0:34:170:34:21

It's a beautiful pattern.

0:34:210:34:23

It's called fiddle, thread and shell.

0:34:230:34:26

It's made in London, 1808.

0:34:260:34:30

-Wow! Can I hold it?

-So that is very, very old.

0:34:300:34:33

Oh! It's heavy.

0:34:330:34:35

Yes! From the reign of George III, and that's in really good condition.

0:34:350:34:40

It is, I like it.

0:34:400:34:41

How much did you pay for it, then?

0:34:410:34:44

What do you think I paid for it?

0:34:440:34:46

-Ooh!

-Oh, gosh.

0:34:460:34:48

-25?

-30?

0:34:480:34:52

-18.

-Oh, wow!

-18?

0:34:520:34:53

Yes. So I think there's a little bit of profit in that.

0:34:530:34:57

-You think so, yeah?

-You think?

-Yes, I do, yeah.

-OK.

-I like it.

0:34:570:35:00

-Yeah, yeah, like it.

-Did well.

0:35:000:35:02

Brilliant, thank you!

0:35:020:35:04

THEY LAUGH

0:35:040:35:05

Now, remember, you two, you don't have to make your minds up now.

0:35:050:35:08

Wait till you've sold your first three items,

0:35:080:35:10

and then make your decision.

0:35:100:35:12

But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer had to say about

0:35:120:35:16

Caroline's George III silver spoon.

0:35:160:35:18

So here is Caroline's bonus buy.

0:35:200:35:22

Well, it's a lovely salt or mustard spoon.

0:35:220:35:26

Probably more likely mustard with the gilded bowl.

0:35:260:35:29

It's got just lovely features.

0:35:290:35:30

It's got a lovely crest there.

0:35:300:35:32

You got the shell there and the pattern.

0:35:320:35:34

I turn it over. We've got a nice clear set of hallmarks here.

0:35:340:35:37

I've estimated it at £20-40.

0:35:370:35:40

OK. Well, that'll please our Caroline

0:35:400:35:42

because she bought that for a very modest £18.

0:35:420:35:47

So, who's taking the sale?

0:35:470:35:48

-That'll be me.

-That'll be you.

0:35:480:35:50

-Well, we'll wish you all the best.

-Thank you.

0:35:500:35:52

Are you regulars at auctions?

0:35:580:35:59

I've been to one or two.

0:35:590:36:01

You have been to one or two, so you know what it's about.

0:36:010:36:03

Well, having been a policeman all these years, you know what life's all about, don't you?

0:36:030:36:07

-What about yourself?

-Only charity auctions as far as dinner's concerned, but nothing like this.

0:36:070:36:11

-OK. Nothing like this?

-No.

-Your first item's coming up.

0:36:110:36:13

It's the garden fountain.

0:36:130:36:14

Let's see if we can get you a profit. Coming up now.

0:36:140:36:17

And £10 I'm bid here with me on commission to start this off.

0:36:170:36:20

But 15, I'm looking for, from the room or the internet.

0:36:200:36:22

And £10 is all I'm bid for the stone fountain.

0:36:220:36:24

15, do I hear? At £10, I'm only bid for the stone fountain.

0:36:240:36:28

15, do I hear?

0:36:280:36:29

At £10, I'm only bid.

0:36:290:36:31

-At £10, I'm going to sell on commission.

-BOTH: No!

0:36:310:36:34

No further bids?

0:36:340:36:36

OK, sold for ten.

0:36:360:36:38

-Alas, that is a minus £8.

-Eight.

0:36:380:36:41

OK. We're on to lot number two.

0:36:410:36:44

-This is the three vintage cake tins.

-Yes.

0:36:440:36:47

Well, let's hope we're cooking on gas with this one.

0:36:470:36:50

Nice decorative pieces, these. Lot 215.

0:36:500:36:52

And for this lot, £20 I'm bid.

0:36:520:36:55

At £20 a bid is here with me to start it off on commission.

0:36:550:36:58

-At £20 is all I'm bid.

-Come on!

-At £20.

-Argh!

0:36:580:37:00

£20, 25, I'm looking for.

0:37:000:37:02

At £20, comes with a free piece of cake from the cafe

0:37:020:37:05

if you buy it.

0:37:050:37:06

At £20, it's bid on commission.

0:37:060:37:08

At £20, it's bid.

0:37:080:37:09

At £20, any further bids?

0:37:090:37:11

ALL: Ugh!

0:37:120:37:14

£20.

0:37:140:37:16

Yeah. It was minus 13, gives an accumulative bid there of

0:37:160:37:20

minus 21.

0:37:200:37:22

OK. Third item, this is your Regency cut-glass toddy lifter.

0:37:220:37:26

Rare object, collector's item.

0:37:260:37:28

You paid £85 for it. Here it is.

0:37:280:37:30

Lovely piece, this.

0:37:300:37:32

Lot 218. I have two commission bids.

0:37:320:37:33

£30 is my top bid straightaway, 35 clears it, though.

0:37:330:37:36

At £35, it's bid in the room. 40, I'm looking for.

0:37:360:37:39

At £35, on bid in the room, the commission bid is out.

0:37:390:37:42

At £35 on bid, and I'm going to sell.

0:37:420:37:44

At £35, any further bids?

0:37:440:37:46

-Argh!

-Oh, no!

0:37:470:37:49

So, minus 50, minus 71 in total.

0:37:490:37:53

OK, right.

0:37:530:37:56

-I want to know if you two are players.

-Definitely!

0:37:560:37:59

Because you've got your bonus lot to go for.

0:37:590:38:01

No-brainer. No-brainer.

0:38:010:38:03

You think it's a no-brainer?

0:38:030:38:04

-Argh!

-OK. Remember, Thomas paid £100, OK?

0:38:040:38:07

-We have faith.

-You've got faith, have you?

-We have faith.

0:38:070:38:10

-Good, good, good.

-I have one, two, three commissioned bids,

0:38:100:38:12

but don't let that put anyone off.

0:38:120:38:14

£105 is my top bid here.

0:38:140:38:16

Get in!

0:38:160:38:17

£105, 110 clears it, in the room.

0:38:170:38:20

-£110 is bid.

-Yes!

0:38:200:38:22

115, I'm looking for.

0:38:220:38:23

And £110 I'm bid.

0:38:230:38:26

110, 115, I'll take.

0:38:260:38:27

£110, any further bids?

0:38:270:38:30

-110.

-Argh!

0:38:300:38:32

OK. So, that's plus £10.

0:38:320:38:35

Takes you to minus £61.

0:38:350:38:39

-Wow!

-OK?

0:38:390:38:40

OK, not a score to be ashamed of.

0:38:400:38:42

Either way, you two, not a word to the...

0:38:420:38:45

BOTH: ..Blues.

0:38:450:38:46

You got it right, OK. Excellent.

0:38:460:38:48

Rob and Katie, are you sort of seasoned auction people?

0:38:530:38:56

-No.

-No.

-No?

0:38:560:38:57

SHE LAUGHS

0:38:570:38:58

No, not at all.

0:38:580:39:00

-I mean, have you been to auctions?

-No.

-No.

-No? Oh, right.

0:39:000:39:03

OK, well, your first item's just about to go up.

0:39:030:39:05

It's the arts and crafts copper kettle and it's coming up now.

0:39:050:39:09

I have commission bid here, £45 straightaway on commission.

0:39:090:39:13

For this lot, 50, I'm looking for.

0:39:130:39:15

I have £45 I'm bid on commission.

0:39:150:39:16

I'm selling at £45.

0:39:160:39:18

50 I'm looking for, to continue for this arts and crafts piece.

0:39:180:39:22

At £45 only. Any further bids?

0:39:220:39:24

OK. All right.

0:39:250:39:27

Not bad. Plus £8, right.

0:39:270:39:30

The next item,

0:39:300:39:31

you were both keen on.

0:39:310:39:33

It's the five-piece silver cruet set.

0:39:330:39:35

-Yes.

-So you paid £53, and what matters is what's happening now, and they're coming up.

0:39:350:39:42

And for this lot, I have two commission bids straightaway.

0:39:420:39:44

So my top bid here with me on commission is £40 and

0:39:440:39:46

I'm selling. At £40 I'm bid on commission. 45 clears it, though.

0:39:460:39:50

At £45, it's bid in the corridor.

0:39:500:39:52

-50 I need on the internet.

-Come on!

-50 is bid.

0:39:520:39:54

55, can I tempt you, sir?

0:39:540:39:56

-55. 60? 65?

-Yes!

0:39:560:39:58

THEY LAUGH

0:39:580:39:59

70 is bid. 75? 80.

0:39:590:40:02

75, my starter, in the blue.

0:40:020:40:04

At 75 pounds is bid in the blue.

0:40:040:40:06

At £75, any further bids at £75?

0:40:060:40:09

£75.

0:40:110:40:13

We have got ourselves a plus £22.

0:40:130:40:17

That's giving us a plus of £30.

0:40:170:40:21

And your third item is coming up now.

0:40:210:40:23

It's that very splendid 20th century travel trunk.

0:40:230:40:26

Let's see where it goes.

0:40:260:40:28

Lot number 246, the early 19th-century travelling trunk.

0:40:280:40:31

Really good order, this.

0:40:310:40:32

It'll make a room look super.

0:40:320:40:34

Lot number 246.

0:40:340:40:36

£40 is bid on commission straightaway.

0:40:360:40:38

At £40, 45, do I hear?

0:40:380:40:40

At £40, I'm bid on commission for the travel trunk. 45, do I hear?

0:40:400:40:44

At £40, the bid is here with me on commission.

0:40:440:40:46

I'm going to sell to my commission bidder, if you're all happy, at £40.

0:40:460:40:49

-Ooh!

-Aw!

0:40:500:40:52

Made £40, that's minus 19,

0:40:520:40:55

which gives us, still, plus 11.

0:40:550:40:56

Well, I mean, we're going to talk bonus buy.

0:40:560:40:59

Oh, shall we, we...

0:40:590:41:00

-Let's do it, absolutely.

-Yeah, definitely.

-Are you going to do it?

0:41:000:41:03

Yeah, course we are!

0:41:030:41:04

-Good.

-Let's do it!

-Remember, Caroline paid £18 for this.

0:41:040:41:08

I have commission interest, but don't let that put anyone off.

0:41:080:41:11

£15 I'm only bid for lot 252, and I'm selling on commission.

0:41:110:41:15

At £15 for this gorgeous little Georgian spoon.

0:41:150:41:17

-20 is bid.

-Yes!

-£20 is bid.

0:41:170:41:20

At £20, 25 I'm looking for.

0:41:200:41:22

At £20, it's bid in the room.

0:41:220:41:24

25, is there? At £20 I'm bid.

0:41:240:41:26

Any further bids?

0:41:260:41:28

Plus two.

0:41:290:41:31

OK. We're now in plus £13.

0:41:310:41:35

-Oh!

-So, lucky for some, you might say.

-Yes!

0:41:350:41:38

Lucky for some.

0:41:380:41:40

The main thing is, not a word to the Reds.

0:41:400:41:42

I am here to deliver the verdict today,

0:41:490:41:52

and tell you now that the winners...

0:41:520:41:55

..are the Blue team.

0:41:560:41:59

THEY CHEER

0:41:590:42:01

Now, as you know, it's a well-worn phrase,

0:42:010:42:04

but we don't have losers,

0:42:040:42:06

we have runners-up, OK?

0:42:060:42:09

I have to say, Reds, though, at minus 61, you were up against it,

0:42:090:42:13

weren't you? I mean,

0:42:130:42:15

you know, the toddy lifter deserved to do better.

0:42:150:42:18

Thomas did do his stuff, did he not?

0:42:180:42:20

-Yes, course he did!

-Yeah, and made a £10 profit.

-Yes.

0:42:200:42:23

But all things being equal, it's still minus 61.

0:42:230:42:26

So, look on the bright side, you came second, OK?

0:42:260:42:30

GWYN LAUGHS

0:42:300:42:32

-All good fun!

-So the winning score for the Blues today was plus £13.

0:42:320:42:37

Well, it was all going well, and, you know,

0:42:370:42:40

you had dreams of the golden gavel, didn't you?

0:42:400:42:42

And then, the trunk, the suitcase, whatever, I mean, in all honesty,

0:42:420:42:46

yes, there were people at home saying, "Ooh, that went cheap."

0:42:460:42:49

-Yeah.

-They will be saying that.

-Yeah.

0:42:490:42:51

And so, you know, you deserve better, but hey ho, that's the rules of the game.

0:42:510:42:54

So, Blues, I owe you a £13-worth of profit.

0:42:540:43:00

There we go, look at that.

0:43:000:43:02

-Yes.

-Eh?

-Thank you.

-I bet £13 has never felt quite so much, has it?

0:43:020:43:07

OK. So, well done, you.
