Today's antique fair comes from the Mona Showground in Anglesey,

0:00:020:00:06

where the local agricultural society have held their country fair

0:00:060:00:09

for the last 145 years.

0:00:090:00:13

These huge grounds measure almost 160 acres.

0:00:140:00:19

That's the size of almost 80 football pitches.

0:00:190:00:22

Today there is not a whiff of farming.

0:00:240:00:26

In fact, the grounds have been taken over by antique stalls.

0:00:260:00:30

Will our two teams manage to harvest a profit?

0:00:310:00:34

Time to find out.

0:00:340:00:35

Let's go bargain hunting.

0:00:350:00:37

Our two teams have got 60 minutes and £300 to spend on three items

0:01:030:01:08

that hopefully will return them a

0:01:080:01:10

profit when they sell them at auction.

0:01:100:01:13

Let's see what's coming up.

0:01:130:01:14

In today's show, the Reds are clear-headed...

0:01:160:01:19

-I think we'll go for it.

-Dave the decisive.

0:01:190:01:22

Dave the decisive, brilliant!

0:01:220:01:25

..whilst the Blues are confused.

0:01:250:01:27

Oh, we're going round in circles.

0:01:270:01:29

And at the auction, the Reds are desperate for the right bidders...

0:01:310:01:34

-Where are they?

-Yes.

-One more, one more.

0:01:340:01:37

..whilst the Blues brace for a bumpy ride.

0:01:380:01:42

-ALL:

-Oh.

-Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch. But all that is coming up later.

0:01:420:01:45

So let's meet today's teams

0:01:450:01:47

and we're keeping it in the family

0:01:470:01:49

today, because for the Red team we have

0:01:490:01:51

got mother and son, Edna and David,

0:01:510:01:53

and for the Blues we've got father and daughter, Morris and Sue.

0:01:530:01:57

-Hello. ALL:

-Hello!

-So, Edna, tell me a little bit about yourself.

0:01:570:02:02

I began my career as a teacher on Merseyside

0:02:020:02:05

and I was a head of the year in a large comprehensive school.

0:02:050:02:09

We got the opportunity of early retirement

0:02:090:02:12

and decided to move to Wales.

0:02:120:02:14

And we bought an old chapel to renovate.

0:02:140:02:17

-Wow.

-It's a bread and butter Baptist chapel.

0:02:170:02:20

Through our garden there runs a stream

0:02:200:02:23

and it was made into a baptism pool

0:02:230:02:25

-and it was where Lord George was baptised.

-That's incredible.

0:02:250:02:29

It's an old stone house, so the windowsills are two-foot wide,

0:02:290:02:34

so I had to have something to put on them.

0:02:340:02:37

The first window I decided was blue and white pottery.

0:02:370:02:40

-Love it.

-And I had to have a Welsh dresser.

0:02:400:02:42

-Of course.

-And I also started liking antique snuff bottles.

0:02:420:02:47

So I collect those for another of my windows.

0:02:470:02:49

So, David, what do you do for a living?

0:02:490:02:51

I'm a qualified PE teacher

0:02:510:02:54

and I taught in a comprehensive school in St Helen's

0:02:540:02:56

and then I decided to move down to Wales.

0:02:560:02:58

I moved to a local school,

0:02:580:03:01

taught maths and now I'm teaching in a behaviour unit in the school,

0:03:010:03:05

so that keeps me occupied, shall we say?

0:03:050:03:07

With some characters, they're lovely.

0:03:070:03:10

Tell me about your sporting background.

0:03:100:03:12

I really enjoy my rugby.

0:03:120:03:14

My grandfather played for Great Britain...

0:03:140:03:16

-Wow.

-..in the 1930s.

0:03:160:03:18

I found a cigarette card with his picture on it, which is amazing.

0:03:180:03:21

-No.

-Yeah. Ogden cigarette cards.

-The ultimate accolade.

0:03:210:03:25

Yeah, superb. My dad played for Lancashire...

0:03:250:03:28

-Wahey.

-..which I thought you'd enjoy.

0:03:280:03:31

And when I was 18, I was lucky

0:03:310:03:32

enough to be picked for England Schools

0:03:320:03:34

and we toured New Zealand.

0:03:340:03:36

Was there anybody in that team that actually did go on...?

0:03:360:03:39

Well, I didn't want to mention it.

0:03:390:03:41

There was a guy called Jonah Lomu who seemed to run in

0:03:410:03:43

seven tries past us, so I have fond and upsetting memories of him.

0:03:430:03:48

So what about tactics, you two?

0:03:480:03:50

David and I usually agree.

0:03:500:03:52

Sometimes I think he buys a load of rubbish

0:03:520:03:54

and then it turns out to be worth quite a lot.

0:03:540:03:56

-Yeah.

-But he's a very good haggler.

-Is he?

-I do like a haggle.

0:03:560:04:00

-So I'll leave that to him.

-All right. Well, good luck, Reds.

0:04:000:04:03

Turning my attention to the Blue team

0:04:030:04:05

and turning to Sue, you've got a very busy-sounding job.

0:04:050:04:08

Yes. I work in the council at Rexham and I am a communications manager,

0:04:080:04:14

so I look after social media, the websites, graphic design, print,

0:04:140:04:19

Welsh language. So it's quite an all-encompassing job.

0:04:190:04:22

Now, I believe me and you share a bit of a dream.

0:04:220:04:25

-Do we?

-Well, I know that we both visit the island of Majorca.

0:04:250:04:28

-Ah, yes.

-And I think you've got a yearning to have a house there.

0:04:280:04:33

An aspiration I would describe it as. I would love to buy a house.

0:04:330:04:36

I'd love to retire and buy a house in Majorca, that would be the dream.

0:04:360:04:40

I was wondering, perhaps today, going round, I might pick something up and

0:04:400:04:43

perhaps make a few million and perhaps buy that dream property.

0:04:430:04:46

Yes. Well, if nothing else, Sue, we can both dream, can't we?

0:04:460:04:50

-We can.

-But, Morris, tell me a little bit about you.

0:04:500:04:53

Well, I'm retired. I used to work as an architectural technician

0:04:530:04:57

with a number of places.

0:04:570:04:58

Started off with Mobil Oil, of all things, in Manchester.

0:04:580:05:01

Ended up in Caernarfon in the County Council.

0:05:010:05:04

Took early retirement, started my own little architectural

0:05:040:05:09

business and then carried on until I was 70.

0:05:090:05:12

What about hobbies?

0:05:120:05:14

My original hobby actually was model aircraft building.

0:05:140:05:17

These were flying models.

0:05:170:05:19

But we're going back quite a long way.

0:05:190:05:21

And I've always enjoyed photography, had my own darkroom.

0:05:210:05:24

Now it's digital, obviously.

0:05:240:05:26

And on my 80th birthday, the family got together and bought me a drone.

0:05:260:05:30

So now I can combine the aeronautical thing

0:05:300:05:33

and the photography thing in one item.

0:05:330:05:36

-Fantastic.

-I really have enjoyed that.

-So, what about collecting?

0:05:360:05:40

I've got to be honest,

0:05:400:05:41

most of my knowledge comes from watching Bargain Hunt...

0:05:410:05:46

-Yeah.

-..Antiques Road Show.

0:05:460:05:47

You're saying all the right things, Morris, you really are.

0:05:470:05:50

I think because you do watch so many of these programmes,

0:05:500:05:53

I'm going to bow to this knowledge, really.

0:05:530:05:55

Because you will text me or phone me and say,

0:05:550:05:56

"Oh, they picked the wrong item today.

0:05:560:05:58

"I could've told you it was the wrong thing."

0:05:580:06:00

-Oh.

-It's easy at home when you're sitting there.

0:06:000:06:03

Yeah. You're going to find this out in quick time.

0:06:030:06:05

OK, you're going to need some money to spend, so here we are, Sue,

0:06:050:06:08

£300 for the Blues.

0:06:080:06:11

-Thank you.

-Edna, £300 for the Reds.

0:06:110:06:13

-Thank you very much.

-And this is the bit where you move off and meet your

0:06:130:06:16

relevant expert, so I'll see you later.

0:06:160:06:18

Well, it looks like we've got something of a family affair

0:06:180:06:21

on our hands today.

0:06:210:06:23

So let's find out who will be guiding our team.

0:06:230:06:27

Hoping to spot a profit for the Reds, it's Thomas Plant.

0:06:270:06:30

And lighting the path for the Blues, it's Caroline Hawley.

0:06:320:06:35

What are we looking for today?

0:06:360:06:38

Possibly some blue and white pottery.

0:06:380:06:40

-Yeah.

-Snuff bottle.

0:06:400:06:42

All of a sudden, I've decided I'm going to look for something silver.

0:06:420:06:45

-I really like watches.

-Watches.

-I hope I can find a nice watch.

0:06:450:06:48

Possibly some sporting memorabilia.

0:06:480:06:50

I like things with animals in them,

0:06:500:06:52

so hearing what my father's just said, what about a silver animal?

0:06:520:06:55

Your 60 minutes starts now. DONG

0:06:550:06:58

Let's go. Yeah.

0:06:580:06:59

-Let's shop.

-They're off. And by the sounds of it,

0:06:590:07:02

mother and son are already having a difference of opinion.

0:07:020:07:06

I don't want to spend hundreds.

0:07:060:07:08

Well, I think you've got to spend to accumulate.

0:07:080:07:10

With so many stalls to choose from,

0:07:100:07:12

the Blues are taking their time to get their eye in.

0:07:120:07:15

-Is there more around here?

-Nothing there.

-Yes. Oh, right.

0:07:150:07:19

That's lovely, that little seed there.

0:07:190:07:22

-Oh, that's beautiful.

-So this is a seed that floats upon the sea.

0:07:230:07:27

These seeds fall from the trees in the tropics.

0:07:270:07:30

-Oh, wow.

-And they float to another island and that's how they generate.

0:07:300:07:34

-Oh.

-And sometimes we have taken these seeds and we have mounted

0:07:340:07:38

them into various receptacles.

0:07:380:07:40

This receptacle at the moment is a Vesta case, cos you open it up...

0:07:400:07:44

-That's lovely, isn't it?

-That's where you put your matches in.

0:07:440:07:47

-Oh, wow.

-You turn it over and that's where you strike them, there.

0:07:470:07:49

Oh, I've never seen one of those before.

0:07:490:07:51

This is in white metal. Possibly in silver.

0:07:510:07:54

-It is dated 1896 there. Can you see that?

-Oh, yes, I can.

0:07:540:07:57

-On the little cartouche.

-It's quite intricate, isn't it?

0:07:570:08:00

-Yes.

-Yes.

-It's got some lovely engraving around this rim.

0:08:000:08:03

-Would that sell well at auction?

-People collect Vestas.

0:08:030:08:06

-OK.

-I would like it even though I don't collect Vestas.

0:08:060:08:09

I think it's absolutely beautiful. Can I hold it, please?

0:08:090:08:12

-Of course you can.

-Thank you. That is really lovely.

0:08:120:08:15

-How much is your Vesta?

-It's 100.

0:08:150:08:19

-What's your very best on it, please?

-85 would be my very best.

0:08:190:08:23

Is there any chance you could do 70 on that, my friend?

0:08:230:08:26

It looks like Dave's haggling skills are beginning to show.

0:08:260:08:29

It's got a lot going for it. It's dated for a fact.

0:08:290:08:32

-Yes.

-That's lovely. Sure we can't do 70?

0:08:320:08:35

You couldn't squeeze to 75 for us, no?

0:08:350:08:37

-I'm holding out for 80.

-Holding out for 80.

0:08:370:08:40

-What do we do? Do we think about it?

-I think we go for it.

-OK.

0:08:420:08:45

-I think we go for it.

-OK. Dave the decisive.

0:08:450:08:47

Dave the decisive, brilliant!

0:08:470:08:50

Well done, Reds, that's your first

0:08:500:08:52

item found with only three minutes gone.

0:08:520:08:55

Back with the Blues and Morris could be about to embark on some DIY.

0:08:550:08:59

-Do you do any woodworking?

-Yes. He used to do a lot...

0:08:590:09:02

-Did you?

-Yeah. Quite a lot actually.

0:09:020:09:04

And I had tools rather like this, which were my grandfather's.

0:09:040:09:09

-Yeah?

-So it would be going back a long way.

0:09:090:09:12

And they were these type of planes

0:09:120:09:14

-which were special riveting or rebating planes.

-Yeah.

0:09:140:09:17

-Which these are?

-Yes.

0:09:170:09:18

Yeah, because they'll actually do a different shape.

0:09:180:09:22

Oh, yeah. So a moulding on a skirting board for instance.

0:09:220:09:24

It's a moulding, yes, plane.

0:09:240:09:26

-And it's all done by machine now, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-Which is a shame.

0:09:260:09:29

Is that something you might be interesting in buying?

0:09:290:09:31

This was not on my agenda, I have to say, at all.

0:09:310:09:34

-Can I also say, it isn't silver.

-No, it isn't silver.

0:09:340:09:37

-There's no animals in it.

-Well, there might be.

0:09:370:09:40

There might be a dead spider or something.

0:09:400:09:42

-But it does appeal to my DIY instincts.

-I thought it might.

0:09:420:09:44

I like the box, I have to say. I really do like the box.

0:09:440:09:46

Oh, the box itself is nice.

0:09:460:09:48

And the fact that it's complete and in this box.

0:09:480:09:51

-But?

-And the tools are the same period, obviously.

0:09:510:09:54

-It looks late Victorian to me.

-Yes, I would say so.

0:09:540:09:57

The saw is very nice.

0:09:570:09:59

You're not convincing me that you love this.

0:09:590:10:01

"The saw is very nice" sounded a bit forced.

0:10:010:10:05

-But you love it, don't you?

-I think it's great.

0:10:050:10:07

How much is your box and tools, please?

0:10:070:10:11

-£160 for the whole lot.

-For the whole lot?

0:10:110:10:14

-That seems a good price.

-It does.

0:10:140:10:16

-That's over half our total budget.

-Should we think about it?

0:10:160:10:19

-It's entirely up to you.

-The price seems OK.

0:10:190:10:23

-But that's the gentleman's first price.

-I'll knock £5 off it.

0:10:230:10:26

-Could you take what I have?

-150.

-Yeah?

-I'll take 150 for it.

0:10:260:10:30

There's a lot of tools for your money.

0:10:300:10:33

And it's a good-looking box.

0:10:330:10:35

-Right, OK?

-Yeah. Fine.

-Deal.

-Whoa!

0:10:350:10:40

Excellent!

0:10:400:10:42

With half the budget spent, Sue doesn't look too happy.

0:10:420:10:45

On the bright side though, they've

0:10:450:10:47

-got their first item after only five minutes.

-One down...

0:10:470:10:50

-Two to go.

-Now we have to please Sue.

-Yes. Oh, come on, Sue.

0:10:500:10:53

Right. So both our teams are speeding ahead.

0:10:530:10:57

And what's this Thomas has spotted for the Reds?

0:10:570:10:59

-Do you know what that is?

-It's not bookends.

0:10:590:11:02

-It's a book trough.

-A book trough?

0:11:020:11:04

You're in your library, no television.

0:11:040:11:07

-Oh, right.

-You've had enough of your knitting, yeah?

0:11:070:11:09

Your sampler work.

0:11:090:11:11

So you go up the steps, put them in the trough

0:11:110:11:13

and then walk in to your sitting room.

0:11:130:11:15

You sit down and start to read, you know?

0:11:150:11:17

-I think it's rather fun, don't you?

-It is. So what sort of wood is it?

0:11:170:11:20

-Coromandel.

-Coromandel.

0:11:200:11:23

With the brass, very Victorian, with this Gothic design to it.

0:11:230:11:27

-And he's got £70 on it.

-I'm not keen on the brass.

0:11:270:11:30

-Aren't you?

-I'm not keen on the brass.

-You'd have to polish it.

0:11:300:11:33

-That's true.

-So it is a no to the book trough,

0:11:330:11:36

and the search goes on for the next two items.

0:11:360:11:39

Inside, the Blues have seen this unusual lamp.

0:11:390:11:41

It is a Tiffany style.

0:11:410:11:44

-Yes.

-It's glass.

-I thought it was glass, top and bottom.

0:11:440:11:47

-Dragonfly. Beautiful.

-It is quite nice.

-It is stunning with the light.

0:11:470:11:50

-Yeah, it is nice.

-Yeah, yeah.

-How much is that?

-195.

0:11:500:11:54

Remember, you've only got £150 left!

0:11:540:11:57

What would your best price be on that lamp?

0:11:570:11:59

-I would do it for 180.

-That's out.

-That's out.

0:11:590:12:03

It is lights out for the dragonfly lamp

0:12:030:12:05

and the search goes on for Sue's animal-themed item.

0:12:050:12:08

Now, these are the silver animals that you're talking about.

0:12:100:12:13

-Yeah. Absolutely.

-They are terribly popular.

0:12:130:12:15

That little pig is gorgeous.

0:12:150:12:17

Yes, a lot of them are made by Sampson Mordan.

0:12:170:12:19

They're all Edwardian, turn-of-the-century, 1900-ish.

0:12:190:12:24

There's quite a lot of pigs about, so, consequently,

0:12:240:12:27

he's only 225, but look at the emu,

0:12:270:12:30

he's very rare, hence 1,250.

0:12:300:12:34

-And the frog.

-He's lovely, isn't he?

-Yeah, beautiful.

0:12:340:12:36

But we haven't got enough money. That frog is lovely.

0:12:360:12:38

So we need to say goodbye to the silver animals.

0:12:380:12:40

Moving on and the Reds are heading

0:12:400:12:42

inside, on the hunt for sporting memorabilia.

0:12:420:12:45

In a previous life, you were a PE teacher.

0:12:450:12:47

-I was, yes.

-Have you ever seen these?

0:12:470:12:51

-And they are not juggling.

-I was thinking rounders bats, maybe.

0:12:510:12:54

-They're not rounders bats.

-No? OK.

0:12:540:12:56

I think it's the term calisthenics or something -

0:12:560:12:59

where they sort of use these for exercise.

0:12:590:13:02

-Right, OK.

-So like this.

-Right.

0:13:020:13:04

-Cos they are weighted. Do you want to feel them?

-Oh, yeah, thank you.

0:13:040:13:07

-Oh, they are, aren't they?

-They have a weight to them.

0:13:070:13:10

-Yeah, yeah. And then you've got vintage skipping rope.

-Wow, OK.

0:13:100:13:13

I don't think it is going to be long enough for you to use.

0:13:130:13:16

-Possibly not.

-Maybe you, Edna.

0:13:160:13:19

-Did you used to skip?

-I did used to skip.

0:13:190:13:21

-Did you used to do sort of...?

-All sorts. I couldn't do it now.

0:13:210:13:24

So there's a vintage one there. Right. Just bear with me.

0:13:240:13:28

-I'm with you.

-Out of the corner of my eye, I've spied something else.

0:13:280:13:32

-Right, OK.

-Just behind you there.

0:13:320:13:35

-Look at this.

-Oh, my goodness.

-Look. Look.

0:13:350:13:39

-This is what every boy needs.

-Oh, isn't that fabulous?

0:13:390:13:44

Your own travelling tennis bag/suitcase.

0:13:440:13:49

There is your tennis racket in there.

0:13:490:13:52

There is your tennis balls.

0:13:520:13:53

You've got cricket whites, jumper, it all goes in there.

0:13:530:13:57

68 on there for that.

0:13:570:13:59

It was made by the Germans.

0:13:590:14:01

"Echt Vulcanfiber."

0:14:010:14:04

What are you thinking, Thomas?

0:14:040:14:06

-We could make up...

-Bit of a sporting...

0:14:060:14:09

-We've got a bit of a PE lot.

-Definitely, yeah.

0:14:090:14:11

-It's just a bit of fun, isn't it?

-Definitely.

-It's lovely.

0:14:110:14:14

So with a combined total of £101,

0:14:140:14:17

it is up to Thomas to exercise his powers of negotiations

0:14:170:14:20

to get the price down.

0:14:200:14:21

Now, with 20 minutes gone,

0:14:210:14:23

is Caroline holding the key to success?

0:14:230:14:26

I've never seen anything like this.

0:14:260:14:28

So it's a brooch that you'd wear the key and then with the chain.

0:14:280:14:34

-Yeah.

-It is not hallmarked silver.

0:14:340:14:37

-No, but it tests as silver, I'm sure.

-What is the price on that?

0:14:370:14:40

168.

0:14:400:14:41

It is certainly very unusual, but

0:14:410:14:43

that would be another huge ticketed item, wouldn't it?

0:14:430:14:47

After Morris blew half the money on the tool box,

0:14:470:14:49

this key is definitely over budget.

0:14:490:14:52

Now, has Thomas got a good deal

0:14:520:14:55

on sporting equipment priced at £101?

0:14:550:14:58

-She'll let us have the lot for £50.

-OK.

-That's over 50% off.

0:14:580:15:02

-Nicely done, Thomas.

-I did try a bit of a deal.

0:15:020:15:05

I said, "Look, if I could get

0:15:050:15:07

"20 skips done without breaking, could I have it for 45?"

0:15:070:15:12

-She said no.

-Oh. We would all like to have seen that.

0:15:120:15:15

£50. What do you think?

0:15:150:15:16

I like it. I think it's fun.

0:15:160:15:19

-I think it's a fun thing, yeah, definitely.

-Yes.

0:15:190:15:21

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-That's your second item.

0:15:210:15:24

-Brilliant.

-Doing well.

-You certainly are, Reds.

0:15:240:15:27

Unlike the Blues, who still have two more items to find.

0:15:270:15:30

Will they make it to the finishing line in time?

0:15:300:15:32

Before we find out, I want to show you something

0:15:320:15:35

that's close to my heart.

0:15:350:15:36

The minute I saw this decanter at a car boot,

0:15:430:15:46

I knew that it was coming home with me.

0:15:460:15:49

I've actually had it for no more than about ten years.

0:15:490:15:52

It was filthy, it didn't look a bit like this,

0:15:520:15:55

but I spent a lot of time cleaning it up and hey presto.

0:15:550:15:58

It looks as though it was made during the late Georgian period.

0:15:580:16:03

Just looking at the general shape of it,

0:16:030:16:06

it's very much 1820, the cutting is exquisite.

0:16:060:16:10

You've got this wonderful deep cutting on the shoulders,

0:16:100:16:13

and if you look carefully, you've got these arcades

0:16:130:16:16

where you've got fan and hobnailed cutting and that

0:16:160:16:19

decoration was actually extended to the stopper.

0:16:190:16:23

Now, having said 1820, it's not.

0:16:230:16:27

It is very Georgian in inspiration,

0:16:270:16:30

but this piece was probably made

0:16:300:16:32

somewhere between 1910 and around about maybe 1930.

0:16:320:16:37

That was a time when there was a great revival

0:16:370:16:40

in Sheraton furniture and, believe it or not,

0:16:400:16:43

the Georgian period was looked back on, in those days, as being retro.

0:16:430:16:48

This has been made of lead crystal.

0:16:480:16:50

Now, when people talk about lead crystal,

0:16:500:16:52

what they're saying is that the glass content

0:16:520:16:56

has got 24% lead oxide in the mix.

0:16:560:16:59

Now, I can tell you, when you pick this up, it is quite a weight.

0:16:590:17:03

I don't mind admitting, when it comes to pouring the wine, that's my job.

0:17:030:17:07

I wouldn't entrust anyone else with my decanter.

0:17:070:17:11

If I wanted to buy the equivalent quality of glass today,

0:17:110:17:15

and there aren't many makers out there, I can assure you,

0:17:150:17:17

that can do this, you would have to pay around about £280.

0:17:170:17:22

I'm pleased to say, when I was at the car boot,

0:17:220:17:25

I paid the princely sum of £28.

0:17:250:17:28

Decanters for me are the bargain buy of the moment.

0:17:280:17:33

How long that moment is going to last, let's watch, wait and see.

0:17:330:17:36

Back to the shopping and the Reds have two items, while the Blues

0:17:440:17:47

trail behind with just one.

0:17:470:17:49

Despite having only £150 left,

0:17:490:17:52

Sue has not completely ruled out another big-ticket item.

0:17:520:17:56

-I do love that tape measure.

-That's gorgeous.

0:17:560:17:58

-Isn't it just?

-I'll do it for 130.

0:17:580:18:02

We've gone quite high-end again, haven't we?

0:18:020:18:05

Nothing wrong with going high-end.

0:18:050:18:07

It's novelty, it's genuine antique, so...

0:18:070:18:09

It caught my eye immediately.

0:18:090:18:10

I think it's lovely. It's a lot better than the one I've got in my

0:18:100:18:13

handbag from a Christmas cracker.

0:18:130:18:15

I should hope so. While Sue measures up the remaining budget,

0:18:150:18:18

Thomas is serving up some blue and white pottery for Edna.

0:18:180:18:21

-There's quite a lot going on there.

-Quite pleasant.

0:18:210:18:24

Got like a little pretty deco trio,

0:18:240:18:25

sort of like an Italian lake scene.

0:18:250:18:27

-Yeah.

-Only issue is, when one drinks one's tea, is your finger out?

0:18:270:18:31

-Do you want to put your finger out?

-Pinkie.

-Pinkie out.

0:18:310:18:34

-All day.

-I like your style, Dave. Very stylish.

0:18:340:18:37

-That's quite nice, actually, isn't it?

-Is that...?

0:18:370:18:40

How many? One, two, three, four,

0:18:400:18:43

five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12 cups. 11 saucers.

0:18:430:18:49

I think it is a no-goer, I'm afraid.

0:18:490:18:51

Not quite the tea party they were hoping for.

0:18:530:18:55

With only 20 minutes to go,

0:18:550:18:57

the Blues seem to have drifted apart, and Morris

0:18:570:19:00

is distracted by an extravagant bird cage.

0:19:000:19:03

VENDOR: I think they're very Indian, aren't they?

0:19:030:19:05

-Have a look at the pillars.

-There's a lot of work in them.

0:19:050:19:09

-Cor blimey, yeah.

-Your dad has got carried away

0:19:090:19:12

talking about bird cages.

0:19:120:19:13

They are nice, but I would imagine very expensive.

0:19:130:19:15

-Very, yes.

-He said we could have it for 1,100.

0:19:150:19:19

That one is definitely out of your budget, Morris.

0:19:190:19:22

With £170 left to spend,

0:19:220:19:24

the Reds are also being drawn to some pricier items.

0:19:240:19:28

-This is Czech.

-Oh.

0:19:280:19:30

-Look at that design of the trees.

-Forest, it's a forest.

0:19:300:19:34

Forest, yeah. If you put it against a light... See, look at that.

0:19:340:19:39

-Do you see that, Edna?

-Yes, I can, it's beautiful.

0:19:390:19:42

-Oh, I don't know.

-Have we got a chip?

-We've got a nick.

0:19:420:19:46

-Ohh.

-It was all going so well, wasn't it?

0:19:460:19:50

-Something else there.

-OK.

-Let me introduce you to Sweden.

0:19:500:19:54

And here we have a piece of Art Deco - sea green, beautifully

0:19:540:19:57

faceted, but look at that engraving of the female form.

0:19:570:20:04

-Beautiful.

-That is beautiful.

0:20:050:20:07

You've seen the price, it's £260.

0:20:070:20:10

Let's put that one down, shall we, Thomas?

0:20:100:20:13

Back with the Blues and Morris is in for a shock.

0:20:130:20:15

Good grief. Porthmadog high street.

0:20:150:20:19

Is it? How do you know that?

0:20:190:20:21

I've spent nearly all my life living in Porthmadog.

0:20:210:20:23

I went there during the war when I was four years old

0:20:230:20:26

and I lived there till I got married.

0:20:260:20:28

It was obviously some years ago,

0:20:280:20:30

because the town hall no longer exists.

0:20:300:20:32

They took it down. It's a great shame.

0:20:320:20:34

That's The Commercial Hotel, that would be the butcher's shop.

0:20:340:20:38

How far is Porthmadog from here, then?

0:20:380:20:41

-35 miles?

-35 miles.

-Yeah, it's not that far.

0:20:410:20:43

I like the Lowry-ish look to it.

0:20:430:20:45

The buildings and people in the foreground.

0:20:450:20:48

-I think it's lovely.

-Pen and ink and watercolour.

0:20:480:20:51

-Yeah.

-It's an original. Very reasonably priced at £48.

0:20:510:20:54

-What's your best price on that?

-£38.

-38.

0:20:540:20:57

Well, I'm not going to say anything now,

0:20:570:20:59

because it's your turn to buy something.

0:20:590:21:01

You're looking absolutely terrified.

0:21:010:21:03

-I am.

-So Sue is vetoing Morris' nostalgic desires.

0:21:030:21:07

-I think we should give Sue a chance.

-Yeah, I do, too.

0:21:070:21:11

With ten minutes to go,

0:21:110:21:12

it looks as if Edna has found one of the items she was looking for.

0:21:120:21:15

You did mention scent bottles, didn't you?

0:21:150:21:17

-I certainly did.

-I like the colour of them.

0:21:170:21:21

The way the light shines off them.

0:21:210:21:22

-Opalescent.

-Oh, right, OK.

0:21:220:21:24

I like the shape of that one.

0:21:240:21:26

The fan design, yeah. Rather marvellous, isn't it?

0:21:260:21:29

I wonder if that one might be slightly out of our price range.

0:21:290:21:31

Probably. No, I always like expensive things.

0:21:310:21:34

-How much is this fan?

-145.

0:21:340:21:37

OK, so look at the way...

0:21:370:21:39

..the light comes through it.

0:21:400:21:42

-And it's signed "Sabino".

-Is that French?

0:21:440:21:47

French. And this is probably 1940s.

0:21:470:21:51

VENDOR: '30s, '40s, yes.

0:21:510:21:53

You've definitely got the Art Deco appeal.

0:21:530:21:55

-Yeah.

-Whilst the Reds consider the scent bottle,

0:21:550:21:58

the Blues are really starting to fret.

0:21:580:22:01

We need to buy something, don't we, really?

0:22:010:22:03

-We do.

-Yes.

-You really do.

0:22:030:22:04

There are only seven minutes left

0:22:040:22:06

and you still have two items to find.

0:22:060:22:08

-I'm in panic mode a bit now.

-Yeah, so are we.

0:22:080:22:12

£38. It's not going to make a lot of money.

0:22:120:22:14

-It's not going to make a lot, no.

-Right, we'll leave it.

0:22:140:22:16

But we're going to have to find something quickly.

0:22:160:22:18

-Yeah.

-Time stops for no man, Blues.

0:22:180:22:21

And the Reds also need to make a decision on their final item.

0:22:210:22:25

I quite like the other ones with the figures within the stoppers.

0:22:250:22:29

-Yeah.

-OK.

-With the lighter opalescence. Yeah.

0:22:290:22:31

I love the butterfly. So this one's made in France, so this one's going

0:22:310:22:35

-to be post-war.

-Yeah.

0:22:350:22:37

I think that's dead pretty.

0:22:370:22:39

-I think that one you'd have to be a bit of a connoisseur.

-OK.

0:22:390:22:42

You've got £70 on that one.

0:22:420:22:45

45.

0:22:460:22:48

-That's quite a nice price.

-I think if we could go 40...

0:22:490:22:53

-That would be...

-..we'd go for it.

0:22:530:22:55

-Definitely.

-Yes, OK, I'll do 40.

0:22:550:22:57

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

-That's wonderful.

0:22:570:22:59

-I think we go for it.

-I definitely do.

0:22:590:23:01

It's beautiful. And for that price, I'm thrilled.

0:23:010:23:04

-Third and final item bought.

-Third and final item, done.

0:23:040:23:08

-Brilliant, that's you finished, Reds.

-And relax.

0:23:080:23:11

-Great.

-But the Blues are really under pressure.

0:23:110:23:14

With two items to find

0:23:160:23:18

and just four minutes left on the clock,

0:23:180:23:21

this could be an impossible task.

0:23:210:23:23

Oh! We're going round in circles.

0:23:230:23:25

Oh, no!

0:23:250:23:27

We haven't looked right at the beginning, have we?

0:23:270:23:29

-No, we haven't.

-So come on.

-And you, Morris, keep up.

0:23:290:23:33

What about that little thing with the silver top on it?

0:23:330:23:38

How much is your silver-topped jar? Absolutely rock bottom.

0:23:380:23:43

27, I'm asking. But I'll do it for 20.

0:23:430:23:47

-Cute enough.

-It's not going to make much, is it?

0:23:470:23:50

-It's not going to make much...

-But we haven't got...

0:23:500:23:53

-1901.

-Birmingham. 1901.

-What about 18?

0:23:530:23:57

-What about 15?

-15.

-Not 15.

-15.

-16, can it be?

-17.

0:23:570:24:04

Oh, gosh! You're going to have to decide. It's up to you.

0:24:040:24:08

-Yes.

-Yes?

-Right, 17.

-Right, 17.

-Great! Well done, Blues.

0:24:080:24:13

But you're not out of trouble yet.

0:24:130:24:15

There are less than two minutes left and still one item to go.

0:24:150:24:19

Will our helpful stallholder come to the rescue again?

0:24:190:24:21

Now, that's a little Vesta.

0:24:230:24:25

It's interesting, because it's depicting cycling

0:24:250:24:28

and there's always a big interest in cycling.

0:24:280:24:31

If we turn it over to the other side, the lady in her skirt.

0:24:310:24:35

In Edwardian dress, yes.

0:24:350:24:37

So that's rather a nice thing. What's the price on that?

0:24:370:24:40

My best price on that would be £40.

0:24:400:24:43

-What do you think?

-I like it.

0:24:430:24:45

Hurry, Blues, just 20 seconds on the clock.

0:24:450:24:48

Cycling is massive now, isn't it?

0:24:480:24:50

Could you do that for 38?

0:24:500:24:53

-Are you happy with that?

-We'll go for that.

0:24:530:24:55

-Would you like that? Are we all happy?

-She's the handshaker.

0:24:550:24:59

Goodness. Finished in the nick of time.

0:24:590:25:03

-We're out of time.

-It's gone.

0:25:030:25:05

BELL RINGS Stop the clock.

0:25:050:25:07

-Your 60 minutes is up.

-Is it worse than you thought?

0:25:070:25:10

Yes. I'm never sitting on the sofa

0:25:100:25:12

again and shouting at them in the auction house, ever.

0:25:120:25:15

Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:25:150:25:18

Edna and David hope to grow a profit

0:25:200:25:22

with the seed pod Vesta case bought for £80.

0:25:220:25:25

They look to serve an ace with the sporting items for £50.

0:25:260:25:30

And bought the opalescent scent bottle for £40.

0:25:320:25:35

So, Thomas, slick teamwork here, I thought.

0:25:360:25:39

Fabulous teamwork.

0:25:390:25:41

A great bond between mother and son.

0:25:410:25:43

It was a real pleasure to be involved in.

0:25:430:25:45

So, Edna, tell me, what was the one item that you liked more than any of

0:25:450:25:49

-the others?

-I think I liked the Vesta case.

0:25:490:25:52

-It was beautiful.

-But which do you think is going to give you the

0:25:520:25:54

-biggest profit?

-The perfume bottle.

0:25:540:25:57

-We did manage to get the price down quite a lot.

-You did.

0:25:570:26:00

-I hope it'll make us the biggest profit.

-What about yourself, David?

0:26:000:26:03

I really liked the mixed sporting lot we got.

0:26:030:26:06

-Yeah?

-I really did, yes.

0:26:060:26:07

I think that's a great lot.

0:26:070:26:09

I did hope to see Thomas skipping but we missed out on that,

0:26:090:26:11

-unfortunately.

-What about the one item that is going to give you the

0:26:110:26:14

-biggest profit?

-I would say the scent bottle as well.

0:26:140:26:16

-So what was the big spend, you two?

-170.

0:26:160:26:20

So you're going to cross my palm with £130.

0:26:200:26:23

-I am.

-OK.

0:26:230:26:25

So, Thomas, what are your thoughts on your bonus buy?

0:26:250:26:28

I think I'd like to find something which Edna mentioned,

0:26:280:26:31

-something which may sparkle.

-OK.

-May entice.

0:26:310:26:34

-OK, excellent.

-Sounds intriguing.

0:26:340:26:36

Well, while Thomas goes off for an enticing bonus buy,

0:26:360:26:40

let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.

0:26:400:26:43

Morris and Sue hope to carve out a profit

0:26:430:26:47

with the tool box bought for £150.

0:26:470:26:50

They spent £17 on the silver-topped dressing table jar.

0:26:500:26:54

And paid £38 for the Vesta case.

0:26:560:26:59

Well, Caroline, a remarkable bit of spending there.

0:27:000:27:04

The second remarkable is these two are still talking to one another.

0:27:040:27:08

There was a bit of disagreement about the tools.

0:27:080:27:11

You're not keen on the tools, are you?

0:27:110:27:13

Not particularly. It wouldn't be my choice.

0:27:130:27:16

But I bow to my father's knowledge and carpentry skills,

0:27:160:27:19

so that's what we did.

0:27:190:27:21

But I think it put you off finding

0:27:210:27:23

something until the last five minutes.

0:27:230:27:25

Yeah, five minutes.

0:27:250:27:27

But the main thing is you did end up with three items and what was your

0:27:270:27:32

-favourite?

-The enormous box full of tools.

0:27:320:27:35

-Couldn't go wrong.

-Which is going to give you the biggest profit?

0:27:350:27:38

Obviously the tool box.

0:27:380:27:40

All right, Sue. What was your favourite buy of the day?

0:27:400:27:43

The matchbox.

0:27:430:27:44

Which do you think is going to give you the biggest profit?

0:27:440:27:47

-I'm going to say the matchbox.

-OK. How much did you spend in total?

0:27:470:27:50

-205, was it?

-Yes.

-205.

0:27:500:27:53

-Yes.

-Which means that somebody is going to give me £95.

0:27:530:27:57

There it is. OK, Caroline, there you go.

0:27:570:27:59

-Thank you very much.

-£95 for a bonus buy.

0:27:590:28:02

-Any thoughts?

-I'm going to do it quickly.

0:28:020:28:04

Right. OK.

0:28:060:28:08

So while Caroline goes off to make a speedy bonus buy,

0:28:080:28:12

we're off to the auction.

0:28:120:28:14

We've travelled from Anglesey to the auction in Nantwich,

0:28:170:28:20

Cheshire, where I'm joined by auctioneer Chris Large.

0:28:200:28:23

-How do you do?

-Lovely to be here.

0:28:230:28:26

Let's get straight down to business with our Red team,

0:28:260:28:28

Edna and David.

0:28:280:28:30

Their first item is this smart-looking Vesta case.

0:28:300:28:36

It's gorgeous, isn't it?

0:28:360:28:37

It's made out of a nut that's been polished,

0:28:370:28:39

I think it's continental. There are no hallmarks on it.

0:28:390:28:42

It's got a nice monogram on it and it's got the date on it, 1896.

0:28:420:28:47

Just a really lovely, sweet little piece.

0:28:470:28:49

It is. What is your estimate?

0:28:490:28:50

It has got a come-buy-me estimate of £30 to £50,

0:28:500:28:53

but I'm sure that's going to help it race on and make a lot more.

0:28:530:28:56

Well, let's keep our fingers crossed

0:28:560:28:58

because they paid £80 for it, but it's got potential.

0:28:580:29:00

-Yeah.

-OK. Item number two is a case of anyone for tennis?

0:29:000:29:05

-Yeah.

-And everything else for that matter.

0:29:050:29:07

-What do you make of that?

-Well,

0:29:070:29:09

exactly what we need if we ever have a British summer.

0:29:090:29:12

I think it's got a really trendy case as well.

0:29:120:29:15

I mean, I love the houndstooth interior.

0:29:150:29:17

Even if you're not into tennis, you can use the case.

0:29:170:29:19

-I think it's a great item.

-OK. Estimate?

0:29:190:29:22

-I think £15 to £25.

-They splashed out £50 on that.

0:29:220:29:26

But there's plenty to go for, isn't there?

0:29:260:29:28

-Definitely.

-And third item is that rather intriguing opalescent

0:29:280:29:33

glass perfume bottle with a butterfly stopper.

0:29:330:29:36

Now, what do we know about this?

0:29:360:29:38

Well, I don't think it's made by Lalique

0:29:380:29:40

and I don't think it's made by Sabino either,

0:29:400:29:42

which is what it looks like.

0:29:420:29:43

-Yes, it does.

-And wouldn't it be nice if it was?

0:29:430:29:45

But it's a nice decorative piece.

0:29:450:29:47

-It's got that great opalescence colour.

-And of indeterminate age,

0:29:470:29:50

-I think it's fair to say.

-That would be fair.

-So estimate?

0:29:500:29:53

-£20 to £30.

-They paid £40 for it, so it needs a good win to blow that

0:29:530:29:58

-into a profit, yes?

-Hopefully.

0:29:580:30:00

So, I think it worthwhile for Edna and David

0:30:000:30:03

to consider Thomas' bonus buy.

0:30:030:30:05

So, let's find out what that is.

0:30:050:30:07

So, Edna and David,

0:30:090:30:10

you left Thomas £130 to go and find a bonus buy for you.

0:30:100:30:15

Thomas, what did you come up with?

0:30:150:30:16

Well, you know I said, when you handed me the money,

0:30:160:30:20

something you mentioned, Edna, wasn't it?

0:30:200:30:22

I brought you a piece of jewellery.

0:30:220:30:25

-Ah, lovely.

-So this is a piece of British Arts and Crafts.

0:30:250:30:28

It's dated 1908, Birmingham, made by Gourdel Vales & Co.

0:30:280:30:34

It's a beautiful bit of silver, with enamelling, hammer-beaten,

0:30:340:30:38

what we call planished and then a little pearl drop at the end.

0:30:380:30:42

-That's beautiful.

-It is, isn't it?

-Yes.

-Come on then, what did you pay?

0:30:420:30:46

Well, see you're there.

0:30:460:30:48

David doesn't care about the money, he thinks it's beautiful.

0:30:480:30:51

This did cost, I have to say, £110.

0:30:510:30:54

-SHE GASPS

-Wow!

-It is wow, isn't it?

0:30:540:30:56

But it is a beautiful bit of jewellery.

0:30:560:30:58

-Nice box as well.

-Well, I think the box just sets it off.

0:30:580:31:01

-Definitely.

-We were looking for jewellery, weren't we?

0:31:010:31:04

-Yes.

-And you hadn't got any, so I thought this was ideal.

0:31:040:31:06

-Fabulous.

-Lovely.

-What do you think it will make?

0:31:060:31:09

I think these are very popular.

0:31:090:31:11

It's got a very good chance of making £120 to £150,

0:31:110:31:14

-because it's very beautiful.

-It is lovely.

0:31:140:31:17

The important thing to remember is

0:31:170:31:18

you don't have to make your minds up now.

0:31:180:31:20

Just wait until you've sold your first three items

0:31:200:31:22

and then that's when you make your decision.

0:31:220:31:24

But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer has to say about

0:31:240:31:29

Thomas's Art Nouveau brooch.

0:31:290:31:31

So, here is Thomas' bonus buy.

0:31:310:31:33

It's an attractive-looking enamelled jewel, isn't it?

0:31:330:31:37

It's lovely, isn't it? It's a great

0:31:370:31:39

piece of Arts and Crafts silver.

0:31:390:31:41

It's Gourdel Vales & Co, Birmingham.

0:31:410:31:43

It's hallmarked 1908.

0:31:430:31:45

Lovely bit of enamel work. I really like this.

0:31:450:31:48

Very saleable, yeah? But what estimate do you reckon?

0:31:480:31:50

I've estimated it £70 to £100.

0:31:500:31:52

Thomas went and paid £110 for it and I can understand why.

0:31:520:31:57

Once again, with the right people chasing it,

0:31:570:31:59

we could be in for something of a little bit of a bonus there, yeah?

0:31:590:32:02

-Yeah. Fingers crossed.

-Well, that's it for the Reds.

0:32:020:32:05

On to the Blues, this is Morris and Sue with their expert,

0:32:050:32:08

Caroline Hawley, and three planes,

0:32:080:32:11

which is just the tip of the iceberg,

0:32:110:32:13

because we've got a box full of this stuff, haven't we?

0:32:130:32:15

-A chest full.

-It's great.

0:32:150:32:17

It's great to have a rummage through and all the different

0:32:170:32:19

moulding planes. They've got different-shaped blades.

0:32:190:32:22

I like seeing the makers' marks that are on them,

0:32:220:32:24

I also like seeing the names of the people who owned them.

0:32:240:32:27

Really nice little set of stuff. It's one man's work,

0:32:270:32:30

-you know?

-Of his lifetime.

-Exactly.

-So, estimate?

0:32:300:32:34

I've estimated this at about £80 to £120.

0:32:340:32:37

Right. They paid £150, so we're getting near where we want to go.

0:32:370:32:41

Item number two is quite a small little object,

0:32:410:32:44

that silver-top little box and the sort of thing I would have thought was

0:32:440:32:48

probably in a toilet set at some stage.

0:32:480:32:50

Definitely, yeah. Nice decorative piece for the dressing table.

0:32:500:32:53

It's Levi and Sullivan, Birmingham. It's 1901, hallmarked.

0:32:530:32:56

It's in nice condition.

0:32:560:32:58

You so often find that these have been polished so much that they have

0:32:580:33:00

-holes in them.

-Yes.

-And, luckily, this one's survived that.

0:33:000:33:04

-So, small object, small price?

-Yeah, £10 to £15.

0:33:040:33:08

They paid £17 for that.

0:33:080:33:09

-So, we're not far off.

-And finally this little Vesta case.

0:33:090:33:13

Well, it's got cycles on it.

0:33:130:33:15

Anything to do with bikes and cycles always adds a premium.

0:33:150:33:18

A great subject matter.

0:33:180:33:19

Unfortunately, it has a crack in it, which is on the reverse side of it,

0:33:190:33:23

-Which might pull the value back a bit.

-OK, estimate?

0:33:230:33:26

-£20 to £30.

-OK, They paid £38, so fingers crossed there.

0:33:260:33:30

So it's going to be worth their

0:33:300:33:32

while considering Caroline's bonus buy.

0:33:320:33:35

So let's now find out what that is.

0:33:350:33:37

So, Morris and Sue, you left Caroline £95

0:33:390:33:42

to go and spend on a bonus buy.

0:33:420:33:45

Caroline, you can do a lot with £95, so show us what you did.

0:33:450:33:49

I can. I did it very quickly. Very quickly.

0:33:490:33:52

I made my mind up, spotted it, seized it and here it is.

0:33:520:33:56

-Oh!

-Oh!

0:33:560:33:58

-What do you think?

-It's silver.

-It is silver.

0:33:590:34:03

And it's got a beautiful hallmark, but I don't know what it is.

0:34:030:34:07

It's in beautiful condition.

0:34:070:34:08

-It is.

-It's made by Turner and Sons from Birmingham in 1979.

0:34:080:34:14

To me that is timeless elegance.

0:34:140:34:17

-It is extreme...

-If you were to go into a shop and buy this brand-new,

0:34:170:34:21

it would cost way over £100.

0:34:210:34:24

It's really good quality.

0:34:240:34:26

The base will be weighted, so it's heavy.

0:34:260:34:29

It's not going to knock over. I only wish I brought a rose.

0:34:290:34:32

I cut one from the garden to put in it.

0:34:320:34:34

It's a beautiful specimen vase.

0:34:340:34:36

Yes, it's nice. How much did you pay?

0:34:360:34:39

-How much do you think I paid? It's solid silver.

-£45.

0:34:390:34:42

-I would say £45 as well.

-£15.

-Whoa!

0:34:420:34:45

-OK.

-Sure as eggs is eggs, there's a profit in that.

0:34:450:34:48

-I would say...

-Probably about the only item we have, so...

0:34:480:34:51

That's confidence for you.

0:34:530:34:54

Oh, ye of little faith.

0:34:540:34:56

Listen, you don't have to make your minds up about this

0:34:560:34:59

until you've sold your first three items,

0:34:590:35:02

but in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer has to say

0:35:020:35:05

about Caroline's silver vase.

0:35:050:35:07

So, here is Caroline's bonus buy, what you might call simplistic.

0:35:070:35:12

Yes, it's got that modernistic look, hasn't it?

0:35:120:35:15

-It's a look that people want.

-Definitely in a modern home.

0:35:150:35:18

And it's silver, I don't think you can go wrong with silver.

0:35:180:35:21

Turner and Sons, Birmingham. It's hallmarked for 1979.

0:35:210:35:24

-Just a nice, simple piece.

-So, estimate?

0:35:240:35:27

£20 to £40.

0:35:270:35:29

Well, she paid £15 for it, which was,

0:35:290:35:32

-I think, something of a very canny buy, don't you?

-Yeah.

0:35:320:35:34

-So, who's going to be up there in the rostrum?

-That will be me.

0:35:340:35:37

That will be you. OK. We'll be

0:35:370:35:38

watching and willing you on.

0:35:380:35:41

£110 I'm bid. At £110.

0:35:430:35:44

115 I'll take.

0:35:440:35:46

Any further bids?

0:35:460:35:47

Are you regulars at the auction?

0:35:470:35:50

I've only been to one before.

0:35:500:35:52

So it's still relatively new for you?

0:35:520:35:54

-Exciting, yes.

-So your first item's just about to come up,

0:35:540:35:57

it's the Victorian white metal mounted Vesta case.

0:35:570:36:01

Lovely thing. I love it.

0:36:010:36:03

It's a really nice thing. You paid £80 for it.

0:36:030:36:05

It's coming up now.

0:36:050:36:06

The Victorian white metal nut and mounted Vesta case.

0:36:060:36:09

Lovely piece this. I have two commissioned bids,

0:36:090:36:11

which I'm not surprised about.

0:36:110:36:14

My top bid here is £65 only.

0:36:140:36:15

-£70 I'm looking for.

-We want more than that, though.

0:36:150:36:18

At £65 I'm bid on commission. I'm selling at £65.

0:36:180:36:21

-£70. £75 I've got on commission.

-Yes.

-£85.

-Come on, one more.

0:36:210:36:25

At £75. I've seen these make a lot more in the past.

0:36:250:36:28

At £75 I'm bid.

0:36:280:36:30

-£80, is there? Any further bids?

-GAVEL BANGS

0:36:300:36:33

OK.

0:36:330:36:34

Well, hey-ho, minus £5.

0:36:350:36:38

£75. You paid £80 for it. You know,

0:36:380:36:41

-not a disaster by any means.

-Not a disaster.

-No.

0:36:410:36:44

-This is our lot.

-It is.

0:38:360:38:38

How are we feeling today? Come on, be honest with Uncle Eric.

0:38:430:38:46

I'm a little bit nervous, really. We have a big priced item.

0:38:460:38:50

-I might be eating my words.

-A very fine joiner's chest.

0:38:500:38:54

OK. Paid £150 for it.

0:38:540:38:57

It's coming up now. Let's see if there's a profit.

-GAVEL BANGS ALL:

-Oh!

-Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch!

0:39:320:39:35

0:39:350:39:38

That's a minus 60 to start with.

0:39:380:39:41

But you've got your little silver-top toilet jar.

You paid £17 and it's coming up now.

0:39:440:39:46

0:39:540:39:56

£20 I'm looking for to continue with the silver.

0:39:560:39:58

At £15 with my bidder in the room. Any further bids?

0:39:580:40:01

Uh-oh. 15.

0:40:010:40:03

OK. Well, only minus two.

0:40:050:40:07

So, it gives me a minus 62 rolling total.

0:40:070:40:11

Your third purchase was the Edwardian Vesta case,

0:40:110:40:14

you paid £38 for it and it's coming up now.

0:40:140:40:18

The cycling interest Vesta case. Lovely piece this. Lot 302.

0:40:180:40:23

0:40:320:40:34

If we're all happy. Any further bids? Sold on commission.

0:40:340:40:37

So, 25, is a minus 13.

0:40:380:40:42

That's going to give minus £75.

0:40:420:40:45

Are we feeling lucky when it comes to the bonus buy?

0:40:460:40:48

I don't think we've got any choice.

0:40:480:40:51

No, you always have a choice on this programme.

0:40:510:40:53

-Absolutely.

-Yes.

0:40:530:40:54

Yes? And this is a joint decision?

0:40:540:40:57

-It is.

-Daughter and father?

-Yes.

0:40:570:40:58

Let's hope this will buck the downward trend.

0:40:580:41:02

The modern silver bud vase, lot 308,

0:41:020:41:04

£10 I can start this bid off with me.

I'm going to sell. You're all happy in the room? Any further bids?

0:41:170:41:22

Oh, no!

0:41:220:41:24

Well, let's not weep. Let us just wonder.

0:41:250:41:29

You've ended up with minus 75.

0:41:290:41:30

It's not a disaster, but having said that, not a word to the Reds, OK?

0:41:300:41:35

So, teams, smiley faces.

0:41:410:41:44

Smiley faces.

0:41:440:41:45

I mean, it's been a near run thing this particular show,

0:41:450:41:49

I don't mind telling you that.

0:41:490:41:50

There've been a lot of minuses around the place.

0:41:500:41:53

There is only £10 difference between the teams today, OK?

0:41:550:41:59

But the people with the biggest minuses are the Blue team.

0:41:590:42:04

Commiserations, he said.

0:42:060:42:09

It wasn't a good start.

0:42:090:42:10

I know, I know the joiner's chest was somewhat emotive.

0:42:100:42:15

We won't labour the point on.

0:42:150:42:16

But you bought interesting things and we commend you,

0:42:160:42:19

and when it came to bonus buys, you both broke even.

0:42:190:42:24

Can you believe that?

0:42:240:42:26

So there was a contribution of sorts from our two experts.

0:42:260:42:29

So, anyway, you've enjoyed yourselves?

0:42:290:42:32

-We've had a great time, thank you.

-That's all we want to hear.

0:42:320:42:35

And you've only missed out by a tenner. So look at this.

0:42:350:42:38

Hey! Drawing a sigh of relief.

0:42:380:42:41

I'm afraid nobody's getting any money today.

0:42:410:42:44

-But have we had fun?

-We really have.
