For many of you watching, if you fancy a game of football, you would

pop out for a kickabout. But sadly for some children in the UK,

finding a safe place to play sport and enjoy themselves is very

difficult. Match Of The Day's Alan Hansen would like to tell you about

a young boy called Michael who just somewhere

But sadly, for many children in theUK, they just don't have that option.

Michael's story will be familiar to a lot of us.

COMMENTARY: 'Good try! Fabulous try.

'That is a wonder strike!'

Many children dream about being a footballer.

'And he scores!'

And nine-year-old Michael is no exception.

I like football because it gives us time to get fitter.

Good, like, um, to see how you are now and then get better.

Carry on and carry on and get better and better.

But Michael and his friends struggle- to find a safe place to play.

Suitable places are hard to find

and playing in the street brings its own problems.

The people, like, are worried about their cars,

if they get smashed or something.

We normally hit people's cars but we don't mean it.

So they end up coming out and shouting at us.

But help was on hand.

Once a week, a local charity arrives

and makes it their mission to give these kids something special -

a safe space to play

and the chanceto turn their dreams into reality.

Kids In The Street is a mobile sports facility

and it goes around the Greater Craigmillar area in Edinburgh.

Um, we set up in various locations around the community.

We are a totally free service.

We get out there and offer the opportunity for young folk

to come along and try out sports that they might not be able

to access either through money or transport problems.

In less than an hour,

Kids In The Street turn a car park into a football pitch.

And a no-go area for children has become a place to play.

MICHAEL: Kev sets up like the barriers and the goals.

It's an opportunity to get like better games with your pals.

And, like, get fit.

Funded by Children In Need,

the project is making a real difference

by bringing footballto the heart of the local community.

Its benefits are felt by everyone. And, most importantly,

it's providing kids with a safe place to have fun.

I just think the kids nowadays,

it's a lot about sitting and playing games and that in the house.

So I think it's important for them to get out

and have some healthy activities,

get their hearts beating a wee bit faster.

But, crucially, this is about giving kids a safe place to play.

Apart from Kids In The Street, there isn't anything near

that the kids can go and be watched- safely, I don't think.

I like Kids In The Street because I get to play with my friends.

What I like about Kids is that you get an opportunity

to play football and dinnae get in trouble by people.

The project lets children like Michael do what all kids

should be able to do - play freely in a safe environment

and keep those childhood dreams alive.

terrific. Now it is time to thank some of the people who have helped

us this year. If you pop out to post a letter,

bare-faced campaign. While women have been coming in with no make-up

on, the blokes have been keeping the stores looking nice and

Don't worry, officers, it is just Rotary International of Great

Britain and Ireland going above and beyond for Children In Need. In

Horsham in Surrey they threw a fabulous fun day with Pudsey and

pals, with singing, dancing and That is truly fantastic. Please,

don't forget the money you are raising is all spent here in the UK.

Wherever you live, there is a Children In Need project near you.

Like most people, I love dogs. Man's best friend, made for walkies.

But sometimes they have a very special talents. Let me introduce

you to a dog called Grant and his Imagine how hard that becomes when

This is what life was like for nine-year-old Adam

until he received a helping hand from someone very special.

Going to the shops, children's play- areas, parks - anything like that -

things that would be a normal thing to do,

would be very, very difficult for him.

This is Adam. He sees the world differently to most children.

When Adam was very small, he didn't really start speaking.

He never slept through the night.

We were concerned about

his disinterest in playing with other children, really,

and being aware of what was going on around him.

Certainly by two, we were quite convinced

that there was a lot more to it.

In 2006, Adam was diagnosed with autism.

It meant that everyday things

that most children take for granted

could cause him a huge amount of stress and even fear.

But the hardest thing to cope withwas that Adam had no sense of danger.

Whenever he is distressed, off he would run - across the road

or anywhere - just to get away and have that sort of release.

Very, very dangerous.

Family life was a struggle and Adam was rapidly losing confidence.

It's very hard that actually, slowly, slowly,

your child is thinking, "I'm not good enough."

He did ask me, "Why is it so difficult for me?

"Why can't I do it?"

And apologised for himself, which is...really just awful.

But last year, Adam met Grant.

Grant has come from the Support Dogs-charity, funded by Children In Need.

He is trained to assist

autistic children like Adam.

He has helped us to rebuild Adam's self-esteem.

I didn't know if that was possible.

I think any parent would say that having your self-esteem

is priceless.

Just wait.

But the biggest change for Adam and his family

happens when they leave the house.

'If Adam is about to run off, Grant will just wait.

'He knows that he can't run off when he's attached to Grant.

'He doesn't seem'

really to want to any more, which is amazing.

Sure you want to go on the train, Adam?

Before Grant joined the family, days- out like this would be impossible.

But with Grant by his side, Adam's more confident,

he sleeps through the night and the world isn't so scary any more.

I think as well as relying on him as a help and an assistant,

he's just definitely fallen in love with him.

He just is a completely different child.

We say to him, "How have you been feeling today?"

He says, "I'm a superstar." Yeah, he feels a lot better about himself.

So many children could benefit from the help of a dog like Grant.

fact is. So we need to train more dogs. It costs �70 for a day of

Ladies, breathe! We just got back from touring America. We spent

seven weeks over there. Now we are back in Europe. We have the arena

dates as well. Things have been going great. You are busy! Why is

it important for you to be part of Children In Need and be here

tonight? All of the bans are ambassadors for ChildLine back home

in Ireland. It is for future generations. I feel that we want to

lend a hand to something that is important, you know. Christmas day

for me is a big one since I lost my father. We wanted to change how

Christmas Day felt. We decided we would go in for a hospital on

Christmas Day. That is what we are going to do this year. To go in on

that day when it means so much. Sometimes the kids do not know who

I am. But the nurses get a lift out of it, too. Hall of fame is about

that. There is not a Hall of fame for nurses, for care workers, for

volunteers. It is a testament to that song. It went to number one.

Thank God a song with a message, trying to bring it back to basics,

people are getting into a bit of positivity. And what you can do

under adverse circumstances. People are proving that again and again

tonight, which is brilliant. Tonight has been brilliant in so

many ways. Some lovely entertainment as well. What has

been your highlight? Getting to perform on it, and meeting Terry

Wogan. The Legend! I don't know if you have seen the film the

commitments. He is a true legend! We love Terry. And you have already

said yester coming back on The Voice as a judge again. We had a

big meeting in La two weeks ago and it was great to see the cast as
