His name's Charlie, and he's nine.

I'm ten. Start again.

Rudy is funny, crazy,

and sometimes a bit annoying.

This is left, and that's right.

Charlie makes me laugh.

And he's great at football.

Aw, thanks!

I have cerebral palsy.

Rudy's very caring.

Sometimes he can guide me

which way to walk.

And then it will will

help me guide a way to the ball.

Charlie and Rudy became best friends

because of Children In Need.

They go to a football

club in Portsmouth for

children with disabilities.

It helps us, like,

build up our confidence.

We make friends together.

When we're playing football,

I wear a yellow helmet,

because I have a poorly head.

Charlie helps me, and he's

my best friend in the whole world.

He's my best mate.

More friendships are being formed

at Happy Hands in Liverpool.

A project for deaf children,

Alayna and Lucy come here

every week.

In Plymouth, Noor and Hari

became friends when they met

at Dare To Dazzle,

a drama group for refugees,

funded by your donations.

I'm Hari.

This is Noor.

She's ten.

She comes from...

(Iraq.)

..Iraq.

When I first came here,

I didn't know how to speak English.

I just felt lonely.

At Dared To Dazzle, I made

a lot of friends, and

when I made friends, I felt normal.

You never run out of stuff to do

when you have friends.

Hari's funny, and kind.

He's a good friend.

Ow!

So the thing about me is

I have cystic fibrosis,

and it affects all my organs,

mainly my lungs.

It makes me different,

it makes me not be able to go out

to play with my friends.

So because of Children In Need,

I have a friend called Sophie.

And Sophie is a befriender,

she's from the Butterfly Trust.

I really like her.

If I'm worried or scared

about something,

I would talk to Sophie about it.

She understands

what I'm going through.

She's awesome.

right now a film about

a wonderful family.

Here's the one and only

Sam Smith to tell you more.

There is no doubt that

life can be cruel.

The family you are about

to meet know this.

They really know this.

I don't know how they begin to cope

with what's happened to them

and they cope with incredible love,

grace and dignity.

What I do know is that your

donations have helped them.

And for that they are grateful.

This is an upsetting film,

but please stay with it

because it is really,

really important.

Doing really well, Noah.

Six!

Looking at him, you wouldn't

have thought there was

anything wrong with him.

Yeah.

He maybe had an unsteady gait,

but apart from that he was

just perfectly normal.

Eight years ago, Noah was diagnosed

with a rare form of leukodystrophy.

It's a life-limiting neurological

disease that has affected every

aspect of his young life.

I think he would have been

an athletic wee boy.

I think he would have

been into his sport,

I think he would have been very

outgoing, very sociable, you know.

I would have imagined him coming in,

throwing the football boots down

and just those normal things that

you just really, you know,

take for granted.

Is that a wee bit better?

Noah is now 11.

Most children who have this

condition don't live

beyond their teenage years.

Are you going to look after me?

Yeah.

Would look after me, would you?

Yeah.

OK.

You're my best boy, aren't you?

We watch Noah and he's starting

to lose a lot of his abilities,

like even the ability to sit up

on his own.

And, yeah, cognitively,

he's still very much

aware of what's going on,

so that for us is heartbreaking.

Do you need some help, darling?

No.

Noah's sister, Gracie,

has witnessed her brother's decline.

As Noah's condition deteriorates

and he gets worse, it

affects our whole family.

Instead of moving towards life,

you're moving towards...

you know, this...

death.

A year after Noah was diagnosed,

our social worker said

to us about a hospice,

Horizon House.

I think initially we were like

petrified, weren't we?

It was just the word "hospice"

and what that meant.

We did go to Horizon House.

And it was just such

a fun place to be.

Horizon House is supported

by your donations and for the past

seven years, they have been

by Noah's side, giving him

and his family vital support,

a sense of normality and most

of all fun.

THEY LAUGH.

Noah!

Get her!

Put it down.

The nurses are amazing.

And it's fun.

The children just do so much

together when they are there,

you know, they love it.

Gracie's been going for as long

as Noah's been going.

Leukodystrophy is

a genetic condition.

And a year after Noah's diagnosis,

the family discovered

that Gracie had it, too.

When we found out Gracie

had it, it was just

devastating all over again.

It's a very, very cruel disease.

She's watched Noah, so for her...

..to be watching that,

there's no words to describe

the heartache that you feel.

We had so many hopes and dreams

for what our family life

was going to be like before.

You know, you think about things

that people take for granted,

like your children going

to university, meeting a wee

girlfriend or boyfriend,

getting married and...

Yeah...

That's just...the kind of life that

you wanted for them.

You're such a beautiful family.

We are so sorry.

Not much we can say.

And we are so honoured

that you shared your

lives with us tonight.

We know you did this

because you are so grateful

to the wonderful support you have

been given by Horizon House.

We are too.

We must continue to support

children's hospices

like Horizon House.

And to do that, we need to ask

for your support again tonight.

doing this? All of us have grown up

watching Children in Need and I have

had the best time working with this

incredible lot and we do it because

it is an honour to be on the stage

and do what we can for Children in

Need. The causes special for many

people and to inspire people to pick

up the phone, even £1 it makes a

difference to the kids out there.

Tonight we played you a film about a

little girl called Vanessa.

The thought of one of your children

being seriously ill is one

of life's true horrors.

As parents, we would give everything

on earth to make them well again,

everything for a smile.

I want you to meet

an extraordinarily wonderful little

girl called Vanessa.

She made me smile whilst my heart

was breaking because this

is a very sad film.

But Vanessa's brave family

wanted us to tell a story

because your donations

help their little girl

to smile and they wanted

to say thank you for that.

I'm Vanessa and I have cancer.

And I'm four.

For half her life, Vanessa has been

facing neuroblastoma,

a very rare type of cancer.

Her family have watched her

go through countless

painful procedures.

I've got two sisters,

and one's called Ruby

and one's called Zoe.

There're a bit of a handful, right?

Because of the treatments

Vanessa has come through,

she has spent over 800

nights in hospital.

I live in the hospital.

My sisters spend their time at home.

When Vanessa's away from us,

we call her all the time.

She's been through some

really rough times.

I'm tired.

She's really special.

What are you having for dinner?

Spaghetti.

I love mozzarella.

I especially love mozzarella!

Vanessa really has

been through it all.

She's really had every

type of treatment that

a cancer patient can have.

I think this is when you went

to intensive care.

My wife and I feel that

Vanessa deserves happiness,

given what she's been through.

Every time I do something

like a procedure or something

like that, I get one of these beads.

And each bead is very special.

These ones are how many

times I've lost my hair.

You've got how many times?

Four.

Sometimes it's

super-duper-duper-trooper boring.

I love singing.

# Ahhhh!

I like to sing.

A lot.

A lot, yeah.

It's just like another

world you can go to.

whilst she's in hospital,

Vanessa's love of music

is being nurtured.

This is Colette, she's

a professional singer

from Spread a Smile,

a charity that entertains

seriously ill children.

She's there to make Vanessa feel

like the star she is.

# In the rain, the pavement

shines like silver...

Spread a Smile are just brilliant.

They give you a little

break from worrying

about what's going to go wrong.

Every single child is so precious

in their own right.

And we want to make sure

that when we go in there

they know how special

they really, really are.

Shall we do this bit,

and then when we get

to I Dreamed A Dream...

They make every child happy.

10 million times happier.

# When I was young and unafraid...

Beautiful.

# And dreams were made and used

and wasted # There was no ransom

to be paid

no wine untasted.

This summer, Vanessa started

a new course of treatment -

the last available.

and the last chance

of saving Vanessa's life.

This trial has only

just been launched.

And we're taking a risk by hoping.

But, realistically, it's very

unlikely that she'll make it.

Everyday counts now.

All through Vanessa's

painful treatments, Spread

a Smile were by her side.

And the difference

they made was amazing.

When she's in pain, singing

is like her magic potion.

When she sings,

she feels much better.

# Nothing can capture

a heart like a melody can!

Despite incredible work

of Great Ormond Street Hospital,

it became clear that there

was nothing more that

could be done for Vanessa.

On the 6th of September this year,

Vanessa left hospital for the last

time, to spend some precious moments

with her friends,

family and loved ones.

# I ask in all honesty,

what can life be...

I love singing.

It's fun and it relaxes me.

It makes me calmer,

when I get stressed.

What an amazing little girl, Vanessa

was and our love goes to your

Everyone is just having a lot

of fun, there's a lot of buzzing

vibes in the showroom.

Now to our community groups,

and, once again, Rotary,

Ladies' Circle and Round Table have

been fundraising everywhere.

We have footage just

in of the Rotary Club

in Horsham, who have put

on another spectacular party.

Ladies' Circle have been collecting

nonstop on behalf of Pudsey.

And I'm hearing Round Table

are doing a cycle challenge

from Ireland to Wales.

It's all happening.

amazing things across the

country for Children in Need

and it's all for one very

important reason - to support young

people who need your

help.

Here's the brilliant

Jim Broadbent to tell you more.

I'd like to talk to

you about a family.

I'm going to call them the Davis

family to protect their identity.

There's Mum, Dad, a teenage

son I'll call Peter,

and a six-year-old daughter

I'll call Betty.

Everything was going well for them.

Money was tight, like it is for many

families, but life was good.

Mum stayed at home to look after

the children and Dad went to work.

But then Mum was

diagnosed with cancer.

She had an operation

and there were complications.

Mum is now going to hospital every

day for chemotherapy

and radiotherapy, just

to stay alive.

Dad has had to give up work

to look after everyone.

This is a terrible time

for the whole family,

and their future is horribly

uncertain.

They've moved from one council

flat to another to be

closer to the hospital.

In their last flat, Betty

had her own bedroom with a bed

that was built in to the wall.

When they moved they couldn't take

the bed with them and,

because Dad has had to give up work

to look after everyone,

they can't afford to buy a new one.

It means Betty is now having

to share a bed with her Mum -

her mum, who is desperately ill

and weak after those daily

trips to the hospital

for life-saving treatment.

A family shouldn't have

to live like this.

Betty should have her own bed.

Mum's ill health means that,

even when Betty does go

to bed, she's not getting

a proper night's sleep.

This is a real family.

This is their life.

This is terrible.

But I'm so happy to be

able to tell you that,

through your donations,

BBC Children In Need have made

an emergency grant to this family

through an organisation called

Buttle UK.

A grant which will buy

little Betty a new bed.

It won't make her mum better,

it won't make this family's

future any more certain,

but it will, hopefully, mean that

Betty has a good night's sleep.

And everything, everything feels

just a little bit better

after a good night's sleep.

Betty's family aren't alone.

It's estimated that there

are 4 million children living

in poverty in the UK right now.

Please help us to continue

to support Buttle UK in the vital

work they do supporting some of this

country's most

disadvantaged children.
