-My story goes back about 15 years,

-when I was in my teens.

-It was a cold, wet and windy

-Saturday evening in September.

-Tregaron Eisteddfod was on

-at the Memorial Hall on the square.

-I'd come down with Dad,

-who was competing.

-A gang of us youths

-had assembled outside the shop...

-..to chat, banter

-and act like wasters, actually.

-There we were, having fun,

-when one lad turned and said...

-.."That's a big candle

-in the window of the Talbot."

-He was referring

-to the window in the corner.

-We all turned to look...

-..and agreed that yes,

-it was a big candle.

-One lad said, "That's not a candle,

-they're flames!"

-The longer we looked at the window,

-the bigger the flames got.

-They got bigger and bigger.

-We rushed into the bar here.

-It was packed

-with male voice and mixed choirs.

-People were having fun,

-socializing, eating and drinking.

-It was heaving, and trying to get

-anyone's attention was a job.

-We came in and shouted

-at Elen behind the bar.

-"Elen, there's a fire upstairs!"

-She said, "You shouldn't be

-in here, you're under age. Out!"

-I pleaded with her, "Elen, there's

-a fire upstairs, believe me!"

-But no-one believed us,

-except for one person.

-Fat Sam.

-Fat Sam ran the Talbot at the time,

-and he believed us.

-He shouted,

-"Boys, come with me, come to help!"

-"Grab anything you can

-to douse the flames!"

-In we came, into the room.

-It has changed a lot.

-It was a lounge back then.

-I remember coming in

-and the curtains were well alight.

-There was a chair on fire here.

-There was a sofa here, also on fire.

-We grabbed whatever we could

-to try to beat out the flames.

-We beat them and beat them.

-But the flames were too big.

-The smoke and flames

-got the better of us.

-Our eyes and throats burned.

-Fat Sam shouted, "Boys, let it be,

-we can't do any more."

-"Let it be, we can't do any more.

-Get out, boys, get out."

-And we escaped

-from the fire's clutches.

-Out we came, coughing and spitting.

-The smoke and flames had beaten us.

-The male voice choirs swarmed out

-and everyone left the building.

-Thankfully, seconds later,

-the fire brigade arrived...

-..and extinguished the fire.

-People often ask,

-"Where is Tregaron?"

-The answer they get is,

-"Outside the Talbot!"

-But if we hadn't seen

-the flames that night...

-..would the Talbot

-still be here today?

-Hm. I fancy a pint.
