Episode 6 Hair

Welcome to Hair. It's the grand final.

We started with eight stylists and now we're down to our final three.

Over the past five weeks, the competition has been fierce.

-Are you not happy with this?

-It's not what I wanted.

The amateurs have had to cut and style to the limits of their ability

to stay in the running.

Got a feeling I'm not going to get it finished.

Now there's just three. Dominika.

It could headline a major fashion show.

Marvin.

I absolutely love what you've done with the hairline.

And Katie.

It's the best Mad Hatter made out of hair I've ever seen.

They've shone the brightest

and secured themselves a place in the final.

My strategy would be keeping an eye on them and seeing

what they're doing, and just beat them.

This time, the judges, royal hairdresser Denise McAdam

and celebrity stylist Alain Pichon,

are setting their toughest challenges yet.

-Are your hands shaking?

-Yeah!

A vintage wartime favourite

and the most difficult haircut of all.

No idea what I'm doing!

And there's a rather special surprise for our stylists

in the final freestyle round.

Oh, no!

Three people remain but there can be only one winner.

Who will it be?

Welcome to the grand final.

Hoo-hoo! Huge congratulations for making it this far.

Of course, the question is - which one of you can win this thing?

As always, in the first round, the judges want to see you

incorporate a set element into your hairstyles.

This week, the vintage classic, the victory roll.

The judges want to see two victory rolls.

What else do they need to know?

The victory rolls must be clearly defined,

not baggy and hanging at the sides, just strong and secure

and, of course, no pins and grips on show.

This is a glamorous look

so make sure it's an extremely clean and sharp finish.

Also, we want to see the shine all the way down each roll.

Your models await. There is one hour and 30 minutes on the clock.

In this challenge, the stylists have each chosen a model

with the hair type they want to work with.

RIP to the curl in the back of your head, boy!

That blow-dryer just knocked it out real fast!

I think I'm going to go for,

like, in the middle, two big victory rolls.

Symmetrical.

So what is a victory roll?

It's an iconic vintage hairstyle with rolls at the front

which became famous during the War.

As the fighter pilots came back from missions, they would do a roll.

The two went together. The victory roll.

Why is the victory roll a suitable challenge for the grand final?

This is a classic technique, how to shape a roll itself.

You have to use drawn-back combing, get a nice sculpture of the roll.

Just think of that line of shine that you create.

Talk me through that. What does that mean?

It's how someone finishes the hair.

You get a lovely, sharp reflection.

The hair's lovely and clean and it goes round like a cylinder.

The line of shine can only happen when you really smooth the hair,

like silk, and make sure each hair,

with the tail of the comb, is in place,

and that's going to make a true reflection to create line.

I picked chemically relaxed African hair for my victory rolls.

For the last couple of challenges

I stepped out of the box with European hair, mostly.

I'm just going to keep it real, cos this is the final.

I stuck with what I knew. Hopefully it can help me win!

Marvin's been doing hair from the age of 12.

He used to practise on his sister

because I used to give his sister a bad hair day.

My mum used to give me doo-doo plaits!

No, seriously! Two big doo-doo cane rows and... No.

He done mine and my friends' hair

and from there it just picked off.

My guinea pig!

He knows he's good

but I don't think he knows how good he actually is.

Marvin's come in the top three of every single blockhead round.

Look at that, it's pretty perfect.

But despite producing amazing creations in the freestyle round...

I definitely feel I'm in the 1920s.

..he's always been pipped at the post.

My main criticism I have always been getting is just my finishing.

Not refined as much as we would like to see, you know?

Their feedback was definitely useful.

It's my finishing I'm really going to work on for the final.

Marvin's going for two large symmetrical victory rolls

on the top of the head, with the rest of the hair down and curled.

So right now you are straightening it?

Yeah, it's a little bit easier to work with

if I straighten out the individual strands

-and I just use the straighteners to smooth it out a bit.

-OK.

Marvin made his choice because he's used to working

with Afro-Caribbean hair.

He's not making himself an easy task.

Blow-dry it, straighten it and curl it after,

there can be a lot of work to it.

Now, this is perfect, man.

-Now smooth out them edges, boy!

-Yeah!

I wanted to do something I hadn't done before.

I hadn't cut in this challenge so I thought I best had.

Katie's been interested in hairdressing for a long time,

really, since she was quite young.

She's got a lot more confident in the last six weeks,

-since she's been doing this competition.

-Yeah.

It's really brought her out of herself.

-OK!

-Lovely.

Mum-of-two Katie came top in two of the blockhead rounds

and impressed the judges with some highly creative freestyle work.

I'm speechless, to be honest, on that, it's superb.

Week by week, I've thought, "Oh, actually, yeah,

"I'm doing quite well here, I'm getting further than I thought."

Bold and brave, you really took it on.

I obviously am quite good at what I do, so I think

it'll make me go for whatever I want to go for now.

Katie is the only stylist cutting in this round,

a short blunt fringe with one tight roll on either side of the head.

The plan is I'm going to cut

a short, straight fringe, blunt fringe,

bring the victory rolls up to meet at the centre,

and then hopefully curl it all so it's a nice, soft, like set pearl.

And if that goes wrong, I'll be putting it up!

Right, so you have two versions in the end, if things go wrong.

-We'll see how the curls are sitting.

-We never know what could happen.

She's flexible, like she always does, which is good to do, but

you need to have a strong plan at this level of the competition.

For her fringe, Katie first cuts a guide, then pulls down

narrow sections of hair, cutting them to exactly the same length.

She tidies up any stray hairs

to give her a '50s-style, razor-sharp edge.

That would have been easier without him stood there!

SHE LAUGHS

Victory rolls depend on face shape.

Like, sometimes it suits you, small one,

sometimes you can do a big one, and it's about how wide they are.

Dominika moved to the UK from Poland eight years ago

but she's still really close to her mum and sister.

The 29-year-old photographer's assistant has been

a strong contender throughout the competition...

Technique was really well applied.

I can't see turns, I can't fault it.

..coming first or second in every single blockhead round.

-Yeah, really good.

-Really good.

And she came top in two of the freestyle challenges.

It could headline a major fashion show.

But the judges would like to see a little more restraint.

Denise and Alain, they've told me to calm down a bit.

There's a lot of flowers in there, maybe one or two too many.

I have to master the simplicity.

Dominika's victory rolls will sit either side of a centre parting

with the rest of the hair down to frame the face.

You're getting a nice, smooth finish.

You're getting that shine that Alain is desperate to see?

Let's please Alain!

Let's please you with this one!

Well, look, you're already on a winner because, you know,

in the '40s and during the War,

they'd have loved to have had those clips.

-They didn't have the clips?

-No, no, no.

There was no money for metal, not for hair.

To make victory rolls, the hair is first set into curls.

These will then be used to form the cylinders.

I'm going to set it in pin curls to cool,

get it all out, then do the victory rolls!

Katie's opted for tongs

but Dominika is wrapping the hair around a styling wand

to make her curls.

I love the wand. You just wind it up

and you don't have to worry about creased ends.

Marvin is using a different tool.

I use the shapers for everything, really. To crimp, to curl, to wave.

The method the stylists use to prepare the hair

will ultimately determine how much shine they create.

The straightener will create the shine right away.

It's a good idea.

The best way to use it is by using fine-ish sections,

just two fingers maximum. One or two fingers.

If you use it too thick, you won't catch the roots perfectly.

I'm going to do the victory rolls, now.

To create a great victory roll, you start shaping it by backcombing,

to keep the consistency.

You can roll it in-between your fingers.

Take off your fingers, rearrange the shape,

a few pins all the way through.

Actually, you don't see them.

And then you rearrange the front to be very even and very round.

This one's coming along.

The plan was to get them done earlier.

But nothing's kind of going to plan.

At this stage, it tends to look like a building site.

When I go away, come back five minutes later

and it's, you know, The Shard.

-Is that going to happen again?

-Oh, I've no idea.

Ugh, Marvin, you get on my nerves! Jeez!

Can't remember where I got this technique from, but thank God!

The rolls must be tightly pinned to keep them secure

but all pins and grips must be hidden in the finished hairstyles.

Marvin.

How you doing, brother? You good?

I'm very good.

I'm going to point it out. Are your hands shaking?

-Yeah.

-Why?

I think I'm a bit nervous!

I think it's just knowing in the back of my head that it's the final.

What I'm really trying to work on is in the finishing

and hiding the pins.

I'm trying to play hide-and-seek with the pins this week!

-She does love to find a pin, our Denise.

-Yep.

-Look, I'll leave you to it.

-I'll let you get on with your hair.

Half an hour left, guys. Half an hour.

With the rolls made, the stylists must make sure

they achieve the line of shine that the judges are looking for.

To get that line of shine it's about preparation.

If you look at Dominika, she brushes and brushes until it's like silk.

And then she knows that she's already on her way to the shine.

I see my line of shine!

The victory rolls are looking nice.

It's like this hair's going to fall out now. I'll try and do it.

Let's get these down.

I'm brushing through the curls with a paddle brush

because I don't really want it as curls,

I want kind of just the movement and the waves.

Three minutes left, guys. Three minutes left.

I have to make sure that my finishing is somewhat immaculate.

Thank you, guys.

If your rolls are not victorious at this stage,

then I am afraid it's too late.

Time's up, here come the judges.

Let's start with Katie.

Very cool interpretation of the shape.

Quite modern, in fact. I like the fringe definition.

Much more contemporary.

The fringe was brave. Well done. You've done it beautifully.

It's definitely got that cuteness. Shine's great.

Got a nice shine coming through here.

The pin works nice here because it's very natural.

Kind of flows in nicely.

Maybe with your waves here, I mean, the waves are nice,

but they could've been a wee bit tighter,

because they'll fall quite quickly.

That would be the only insecure area.

One thing which I've just seen now

that your rolls are fairly short, you know?

They could have been a little bit longer,

as far as building up the shape into it,

and then we could have made even more of a statement.

Let's go see Dominika.

The classic victory rolls.

Beautifully made.

I love the profile, how it builds up and really gets a nice height.

And it suits your model really beautifully.

-Looks fabulous.

And you definitely have got a fantastic shine,

especially blonde hair, because blonde hair

sometimes doesn't get as sharp a reflection.

She worked it beautifully and enhanced the shine.

Very slightly off-centre, kind of want to pull that side in,

just a little bit, it just goes a wee bit baggy, just there.

-Great stuff.

Well, this is a great interpretation of the victory roll.

Proportions are pretty good.

Love the shine, you've treated it really well

and, being dark, it comes out really well.

I mean, we can't see it here and we can't see it here,

but we can definitely see it here.

These guys are going to be difficult to separate.

Well, that's the first round of the grand final over and done with

and the good news is, you were brilliant.

Goodness me, that was very impressive.

I enjoyed that. That was really good.

I think we've all picked up our game now. Like, we mean business.

Clearly the right three people are in the final.

Oh, 100%. I feel quite proud, actually.

I can't see anyone completely stronger at this stage.

The standard is high now.

We're in the final, so no surprise, really. It's high.

And it's going to get harder and harder.

I'm trying to think which one we're going to choose

because right now, it's impossible.

I think with the next two challenges,

that's when it's going to start getting real tough.

Next up, it's the blockhead round,

which is all about precision cutting and, as it's the final,

the stylists are about to get to work on a cut that leaves

even qualified hairdressers quaking in their boots.

Deep breath, guys.

It's the final time you'll come face to face with the blockheads

in the precision cutting round.

This is your last chance to convince the judges you can cut,

and this week, it's the hardest cut of them all.

The graduated bob.

We can see there's two parts to the haircut.

The bottom part of the graduation.

And how to join the top part into it.

When you finish your blow-dry

and you've got the all-over face shape of your bob,

then, to soften it, take any little bits of bulk out of the ends,

use a technique called pointing.

Use the points of the scissors, into the hair,

so you just blend the graduation and the bob.

You have one hour and 40 minutes in which to complete this challenge.

You will be ranked on your efforts.

Although none of the stylists are qualified,

they've all shown natural flair,

but this is the cut that will really challenge them.

Oh, gosh. OK.

They've been given a sectioning map

to help guide them through the first few stages.

Just how I thought.

I just copy the sectioning first.

Once that's done, I can start cutting.

This has got so many levels.

No idea what I'm doing!

Let's talk theory. What is a graduated bob?

A graduated bob is an iconic, sharp shape.

It's almost a combination of two,

where you've got the deep graduation,

from the nape of the neck, up into the occipital bone,

and then you've got the heaviness of the bob.

-Occipital bone?

-Just this little bone in here.

That freaky lump at the back, there?

Which gives you that wonderful line coming down,

just hitting onto the chin.

-Why have you chosen this?

-It's a technically very challenging haircut.

Will they be able to do this cut?

This is a challenge for any stylist.

We've got three brilliant contestants for this final,

but they're not hairdressers, you know, they're amateur hairdressers.

It is very easy to change the angle of the graduation

and go slightly too tight to the head,

which makes the graduation go way too high.

-It's finding the right balance so the shape flows really beautifully.

-OK!

I have to do the good job.

Have to.

The graduated bob is divided into two distinct parts,

the one-length bob, and below it, the cut is sloped,

following the shape of the head,

getting shorter into the nape of the neck.

First they must tackle the lower part of the haircut.

They section the hair from ear to ear,

pinning the top half up and out of the way.

That seems like a cut all of its own. And I've got to try

and blend that with the top, while starting here.

To create the graduated bottom section,

the hair is pulled directly away from the head

and cut at an angle, getting shorter towards the nape of the neck.

Literally pulling it out from the head

and holding my fingers at that angle,

which I'm hoping is 45 degrees!

And cutting it, so that's how you get the graduation.

If angled correctly,

the hair will be longer at the top, getting shorter towards the bottom.

Now I've got to do the rest of the hair like that.

If the sectioning and cutting angle is wrong at the beginning,

the entire haircut will be affected.

It's quite difficult to know how far it should go, the graduation.

Dominika is being cowardly about cutting the hair.

She's not going in sharp enough.

The graduation won't go deep into the nape of the neck.

It will stay a little bit heavier.

She's a good inch and a half away from the neck.

And you really only want to be a finger away.

It could be a little bit long at the bottom.

It just has to be symmetrical. Everything is wrong.

It has to be symmetrical, it has to have a fringe,

it has to blend, like the blending...everything!

SHE BREATHES IN SHARPLY

Marvin, he's gone way too short.

Way too high in his graduation.

He needs a little bit more of an angle.

Longer on the top, shorter on the bottom.

He's gone same length, all the way through.

It's going to be difficult for him to reduce that angle.

Eventually, it's going to go higher and higher,

reaching too high on the top.

It is possible to save it by point cutting, but

he's going to have to do a lot to diffuse it.

Once they've finished cutting the back section,

they move on to cutting the bob.

Now, I'm getting the sides cut to length.

First, a guide is cut, which is then used as a template to match to,

ensuring all of the hair ends up the same length.

How's it going?

It's going.

You've got that whole laser-like focus on this bob, now.

You're like The Terminator of cutting hair!

"Terminator"! Yeah, yeah.

I have to get it right.

Is that your way of telling me I'm holding you up? To get lost...

And they say men don't have intuition(!)

OK, on that note! Ha-ha!

Now the fringe.

It's quite a lot to ask us to do!

The fringe needs to be cut perfectly horizontal,

just touching the eyebrows, and precision is paramount.

Why the left side is always longer?

30 minutes left!

-30 minutes left.

Drying the hair will help the stylists to spot any harsh lines,

which they can correct using the point-cutting technique.

I don't know how to do it!

I really don't!

I don't round-brush. I don't know how to do it.

Oh, my gosh!

It's looking OK.

I obviously need to do my pointing up, whatever they call it.

SHE LAUGHS

Point cutting is when you use

the points of your scissors into the hair.

The best technique is to go in, lift the hair,

catch it with the comb and literally point.

Where you get the blend between the graduation and the bob,

you can sometimes get a sharper line,

so you need to break that line up, so you get a complete flow.

I've never done point cutting before.

I think, if you look at that, it looks quite harsh and jagged,

I think the point is to soften that bit there,

so it kind of blends down. I think.

What does your sister think about you being in the final?

I remember you telling me

one of the first haircuts you ever did was on your sister.

What does she think of this?

She's very happy for me. She's very proud of me as well.

Like, me and my sister don't really say too much to each other, when it

comes to things like that, like, "I love you" and things like that,

but I could tell that she was definitely proud of me.

Definitely. It felt nice.

Yeah, she should be. She should be.

It's a bit shorter than I wanted

and that's a bit straight, but...I'm happy.

and then the angle comes up.

You can see how steep it is.

And, at the bottom, you've just left it a bit heavy.

You've almost left a little skirt at the bottom.

No, doesn't quite meet the requirements,

but a lovely cut all the same. Nice one, Dominika.

Overall you've got a great little bob here.

She's really cute. Loving that.

Just, the graduation's a bit steep.

You've gone a little bit above the occipital bone.

So, if I turn my head, you can see the angle really high.

It's the symmetry. We want exact lengths on both sides. Pretty good.

The fringe.

Seems like you've bounced it up a little bit too much

with the blow-dry.

I'd still be proud of it.

It's just a bit too sharp, you know, but overall, well done.

Has Katie done a graduated bob?

This is much more of a graduation,

as you can see from the back,

working from shorter to longer,

flows really well.

So, it's right where we said, below the occipital bone.

We can see the strong bob going into the graduation.

It's almost shorter on this side and longer here.

-It's got a slight angle.

-It can come from the blow-dry.

And you can see that you are the right length,

but you can ruin your length by blow-drying it too high.

Overall, this is a really great little bob,

and it looks very much like the block that we did.

-Yeah.

It's a difficult topic, obviously, so we've decided,

in order to give you the best possible chance of success,

we've decided to introduce you to your models today.

It'll be a really big shock, she won't be expecting it at all.

Marvin tries to do things to my hair

but I am one of those mothers who's "No, no, no, no, no."

He wants to do... "No!"

I've worked on my mum's hair before. She normally wears

single plaits, extensions.

Yeah, she'll be getting something completely different!

It's a totally different plan than I had.

It's just now I probably need to put some extensions in.

And blend it properly.

But my hair's quite fine and dry.

Doing Hollywood glamour on my mum's hair is going to be a challenge.

I'm proud of him, really proud of him.

It's the final day of the competition.

Today we find out who is worthy of being named Britain's best

amateur hairstylist.

But first, Dominika, Katie and Marvin have one final challenge to face.

It's the freestyle round.

The hair belongs to their mums and the theme is Hollywood glamour.

This is going to be epic.

The only two things standing in my way is Dominika and Katie.

Dominika's probably going to win it. She has been consistently

good all the way through. I don't think she's ever had a bad one.

We know Katie, she always likes to pull off something that's just like, "Whoa..."

And then Marvin, I'm sure he's going to come with full

head of extension today.

Good morning.

ALL: Good morning.

It's your very last chance to prove to the judges that you

deserve to be crowned Britain's best amateur hairstylist.

The theme is Hollywood glamour.

You can interpret that how you like, as long as your lovely mums

end up sporting a hairdo that a star of the silver screen

would choose to wear to the latest Hollywood premiere.

Remember your model.

The style you choose must be suitable.

So elegance is the word.

It's not about being cool this time.

It's about looking beautiful.

Make the hair shiny, I want to see some

movement, shine, quality into the hair.

Right, I'm going to pump you up here.

In previous weeks, the amateurs have had models' hair to work

with in this round, but, as hair can get thinner with age,

tackling their mums' hair will pose a real challenge for the three finalists.

All possible products.

I've never had to do this.

Well, you're doing it now, innit?

The stylists can use anything available in the prep room,

including a vast array of extensions.

-You want me to take my glasses off?

-Please.

Hollywood glamour - what are you expecting?

They've got to look glamorous and beautiful.

They can't look silly. They're not 16, they're more mature.

They can have longer hair.

If the extensions are put in they have to be beautifully done.

That's the trick, exactly.

You've got to believe that it's their own hair.

It will really test them - a very, very strong challenge.

Out of all the mums, whose hair looks like the biggest challenge?

I think all of them have their own challenges.

Marvin's got to put in a lot of work to add on

all the hair, maybe half a wig, maybe weaves into it.

There's whole techniques of making it look real,

blending the hair into it. That's not easy.

Dominika has short hair. How much she's going to create

a piece by keeping it short,

or is she going to bring the extension...how's she going to

blend it into it?

Katie's mum's is quite fine.

And she has a bit of a fringe, so

I personally think Katie's mum could be the hardest.

What's the plan today?

The plan today would be

a touch of an extension,

to give her a bit longer...

-How will you attach them?

-I'm going to glue it.

-Have you done that before?

-No.

-So you'll put it in a "U" shape round here?

-Yeah.

OK, that's good, so you'll get much more volume here.

Going for, like, a Joan Rivers hair...

I'm going for an up-do.

A chignon at the back with curls and stuff on it.

I'll dry it all and then

sew the extensions in.

For this challenge I will be making a "U" part wig,

this section will be left up and I'll incorporate her hair over it.

-Then I'll just work on that.

I'm very excited to see that.

To get volume into her mum Bourgena's hair,

Dominika begins by blow-drying it with a small, round brush.

Yes, I'm just putting it in the Velcro rollers,

and blast with hot air again and then let it cool.

The longer it sets, the better it's going to look.

Marvin has nearly finished braiding his mum Lorna's hair.

Time to make my wig.

The hairpiece Marvin will be making himself from scratch will

cover his mum's entire head.

It's the first time a hairpiece of this type has been

attempted in the competition.

Marvin's got to put in a lot of work and add on all the hair,

making it look real, blending the hair into it. That's not easy.

With the wig cap, she'll be able to take it off and put it on,

cos my mum doesn't like wearing a weave.

Yeah! That's it, going to be making my wig now!

He measures the size of his mum's head,

marks on the wig cap where the hair extensions need to be glued and

where his mum's natural hair will be pulled through to be blended in.

When you're doing hairpieces, the head size is really important.

It's like a hat.

So the shape would cover the back here, and come round,

so profiling the head.

Marvin glues the wefts of real hair onto

the cap following the shape of the head.

I'm not going to add any layers, I'm going to keep it all long

and just cut the front.

Then I will incorporate it to my mum's head via wig clips.

So I'm proper trying to concentrate, sorry.

Like Marvin, Dominika is also using glue

but she's sticking the extensions directly onto her mum's own hair.

I'm gluing the hair extensions instead of doing the clip-ons

because it's just quicker. I hope it's quicker.

I guess it's slightly like with the eyelashes.

Wait a little bit to get tacky then stick it in.

OK.

Smells like the eyelashes glue.

So there are two techniques.

Either you apply it flat on the scalp or you apply it up onto

the hair, your previous section.

Here, she's applied it on the hair so she can have a bit more

elevation from the roots, which is a very good technique.

The extensions are easily removed

when required using a bond remover which dissolves the glue.

I'm about to sew the extensions in at super speed!

Katie plaits a horizontal corn row into her mum Jeanette's hair

and sews the extensions into it.

It's when I jump out the seat and scream you need to worry.

I know, yeah.

I'm literally doing a blanket stitch.

It's where my sewing skills come in handy.

To give his hairpiece a layered look, Marvin is cutting

the darker extensions before he glues them to the wig cap.

I'm just trying to make the hair shorter without it being too blunt.

I'm not used to being put under pressure to do something I enjoy.

You haven't got any clingfilm underneath?

To make sure your glue isn't taken through it.

Oh, no, it'll be fine. It's glue, innit?

If I'd been gluing, I'd have clingfilmed

my block first,

then I would have put on my net,

and then started the gluing process,

cos then once it's dry,

it would have all just lifted off nicely.

I've sorted this now, Mum.

I would usually do a bit of cutting, blow-drys.

What age were you when you started?

I always remember I was

watching my mum in the bathroom getting ready,

when we were on the way to nursery,

and there would be this motion like...

Hairspray and fingers through, mess it up.

We're thinking about '80s and huge...

That's how I learned to backcomb.

-From my mum.

-Your mum's your muse?

-Yeah, definitely.

What does your mother do?

My mother is retired now. She used to be a secretary,

she used to work as a telephonist.

No. Right, let's get you curled.

Having created the extra volume,

Dominika now needs to cut the extensions to the correct

length and try to blend them seamlessly into her mum's own hair.

It just feels...look, it just goes in the steps.

I cut too much hair in one go. I did something weird.

Yeah, it looks ridiculous now.

With the hairpiece now made, Marvin is gluing hairclips onto it.

He cuts out the front section that his mum's own hair will be

pulled through, and then attaches it to her head.

-Sorry if this hurts.

-Hm?

-That's OK, babes.

Beauty comes at a price. If you're putting an accessory into someone's hair,

there's got to be a little bit of pain for a couple of seconds.

He clips the hairpiece to the braids at the bottom of the head,

then pulls it tightly over, clipping it at the top where his mum's

own hair will be blended into it.

Marvin could go wrong with it. It needs to feel fitted, it needs to feel comfortable,

it needs to feel secure and also flow and lie like real hair.

Half an hour left, guys, half an hour.

'Dominika is still struggling to blend the extensions into her

'mum's hair.'

I'm just trying to thin it cos it looks still part of it.

Dominika.

She's using every tool in the world that cuts hair,

she's chipping and cutting all over the place.

So what worries me

is that she's taking out all the volume that she actually put in.

She's reducing the whole thickness, the whole length.

It's going to become next to nothing.

Don't know if it was worth doing it at the end of the day.

Bend your head forward.

With his hairpiece securely in place,

Marvin can finally begin to create his Hollywood-inspired waves.

I'm curling the hair with the curling tongs and then I'm

letting it cool down and set, with it being rolled up and clipped.

I think it's lovely.

When it's finished it's going to be marvellous, it's gorgeous.

I actually think they were a good idea.

-Yeah, they've gone well.

-Have they?

-Yeah.

Curls finished, Katie moves on to creating her mum's chignon.

I've literally put a bun ring underneath

and I'm placing curls on bit by bit to build up the kind of chignon.

Well, that's the plan anyway.

The problem with Katie is she hasn't used mousse or enough spray

to have enough grip into the hair,

so I'm scared it will flop down within the length of it.

Do you want more height?

Just do what's best for you.

Katie's backcombing

is really weak. She's putting it in and she's kind of taking it out.

I have quite a lot to finish.

I'm still not 100% happy with the shape.

I don't want it to look tacky.

With the challenge almost over, Marvin must make sure

that his mum's own hair and hairline blend seamlessly with the hairpiece.

I am feeling Hollywood at the moment, yes.

When you were chopping into it a little bit,

we've done all this cutting wet and I really got used to the wet one

and then the chop was just like blunt.

And I think because you didn't understand,

you didn't get that very fine finish.

I think overall the three of them performed really well.

Overall, I would say Dominika was quite strong in that round.

You know, really close to the one we had in mind,

in the length, in the level of the graduation.

What about in the freestyle challenge?

I really like what Marvin did.

Put all the wig base on it, created all the waves,

All I've ever done is hair, I haven't done anything else.

I never went to college, I never finished school.

And I know it's only an amateur competition,

but it means so much to me that I won,

and I'm so thankful that I won.

Out of all the contestants I think Marvin is the one who listened most.

Really got very serious into all the techniques,

the finishing of his hair, and today was the peak of his work.

He has grown in this competition, he really has.

I mean, from where he started to where he is now is just remarkable.

He just completely got it together, he just nailed it,

his mum was stunning.

I'm happy to get to this point, so winning it would have just

been the edge on it. But no, I'm made up for Marvin.

And his mum's hair was brilliant, so...

I was hoping that I'm going to win,

but he well deserves it.

And you can see his reaction! I think he's pleased.

Me as a person, I ain't the most confident,

but I think now with this competition

it's definitely helped me with the confidence, definitely.
