What you're about to see is the ultimate test

of human reaction and reflex.

Starring in tonight's battle of the reflexes

are the Hattrills, from Surrey.

Led by 33-year-old Scott,

his brother Wayne,

and his cousin Danielle.

They're up against the Harrop family, from London,

captained by another 33-year-old,

Ben,

with his two brothers Sam and Matt.

All looking windswept in the Reflex wind tunnel.

They'll compete in a series of split-second, nerve-jangling

and sometimes ludicrous challenges all captured in super slow motion.

I'm Ken Bruce

and this is the fastest game show in the world, probably.

Ladies and gentlemen, your host, Shane Ritchie!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Hey, and welcome to Reflex - the ultimate test in human

reaction where two families will compete in a series of super

quick challenges, both physically and mentally and the family that

works best together will stand a chance of winning £20,000. Oh, yes!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

So without further ado, let's go and meet our super-fast families.

Hey!

Let's hear it for our purple team, the Hattrills.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

-Who have we got here?

-Hi, I'm Scott.

-All right, Scott, welcome, buddy.

This is my younger brother Wayne and my cousin Danielle.

-OK. Are you married?

-I am married, I have five children.

Five kids! Five kids!

Give me a hug, I feel your pain. I know exactly what you're going

through, you'll do anything to get out of the house, right?

I understand. You know what I try and find out about our families

when they turn up on the show is if they've got any nicknames,

has any of you got any nicknames?

I do have a nickname from my two brothers,

'the fly', from the film The Fly.

What, they think...?

They think I have quite big eyes, like a fly.

-Oh, really?

-I'm all seeing, apparently.

-Listen, but, but...

-It helps me, I can see where I'm going.

Listen, it might come in handy tonight.

And Danielle, beautiful lady, how are you doing?

-I'm all right, thank you.

-What do you do for a living, my love?

-Erm, I'm a nanny.

-OK.

-I've got a little boy, Max, who's one, in a few days.

-Is he watching, is he watching the show?

-Well, hopefully!

Let's say hello to the orange team. All hail the Harrops.

-How are you, sir?

-Good evening.

-Who've we got here?

Yes, Shane, well, I'm Ben, we're the Harrop family,

I'm the middle brother. I've got my younger brother Sam and my older brother Matt.

So, Ben, what do you do for a living, sir?

I'm in the army, I'm a major in the Parachute Regiment.

-Are you really in the Parachute Regiment?

-I am, yeah.

-And you're a major?

-I am, yes.

-Sir!

-Very good!

-Who have we got here?

Hi, my name's Sam, I used to sing in a group called

-the Buzztones for an a cappella vocal group so...

-Really?

-I am so...

So do you think music might help you tonight?

Erm, probably not, to be honest.

Good answer, cos it won't. Matt, how are you, sir?

-I'm very good, thank you, Shane.

-Tell us a little about yourself!

Slightly more conventional than my brothers, I've got an office job, I'm a retail consultant.

What do you think you bring to the game tonight?

Well, I think my brothers would say I'm the geeky one,

-I'm pretty good with numbers.

-Was he known as the geeky one growing up?

-Erm, yes.

-Was he?

Give them a big round of applause, welcome the Harrops!

Yes, well done, guys. Right, now the rules are very, very simple, OK?

The idea is to be as fast as you can over five physical and mental games

and the family that works best together and works the fastest

will gain the most points and hopefully go on to our end game,

which is called the Moneyball, where you can win £20,000.

I'll tell you more about it later. First, are you ready for our first challenge?

-Yes!

-Are you guys ready for the first challenge?

-Yes!

-Yes sir, sir, sir. OK, have a look at this.

In tonight's first head-to-head, both players must

stand on a four-meter tower of five flimsy shelves.

On hearing the reflex trigger, they must launch themselves down

breaking through these shelves.

Inside each shelf are hundreds of foam balls.

On landing, the player who locates one of only five yellow balls

and places it into their target tube will score their family one point.

I'll ask you to talk about who you think should play this game, and who

you think is better suited for falling through those floorboards.

Off you go, go and have a little chat.

I think...I'm fast on colour.

I'm quick on colour.

So each team needs to choose a player to take on the first challenge,

but all three will have to play a game each, so they'll need to choose wisely...

You've got to be able to pick yourself up pretty quickly...

-Bad Choice. Bad Choice.

-Really?

I reckon I could do it, but it's all about the speed of getting up...

-It's nimble.

-And finding that yellow ball too.

-All right, Shane.

-What are you thinking?

We're thinking Major Ben is probably the one for this.

-There's a surprise, there's nothing to do with throwing and jumping and falling.

-Well, exactly.

They seem to have a height advantage, do you think that matters?

-No, it's mental, it's all in here.

-I think this will be an advantage to us cos we're shorter,

we're closer to the ground, we'd be down quickly, agile.

OK, teams, if you'd like to turn round and face the front.

You've made your decisions, yes? Well, let's find out.

Take a step forward.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Ahh! This looks like a game of David versus Goliath.

Off you go, fellas.

OK, this is the first of tonight's battles of speed and reaction.

Scott is 1.7m tall and when he's not working at the Royal Mail,

he says he's a problem solver.

Will he be able to sort out a massive height problem? Because...

Towering over him at over 1.9m

is Ben, a major in the Paras,

and an all-round sports fanatic.

If there was ever a mismatch, this is it!

Was he up for this one straightaway or was he bullied in to it?

I think he wanted to put himself straight up for it.

-We were happy with that, you know, he can lead by example.

-OK!

So, Wayne, Danielle, right decision using Scott?

-Definitely.

-Yeah, he's hungry, Shane.

-Look at him.

-I can see the hunger in his eyes.

-He wants it.

-He does, doesn't he?

-Yeah.

I must remain impartial, but that could be fear in his eyes.

Right then, Major Ben, Scott,

are you ready to play?

Yep?

Let's play.

The reflex trigger can fire at any moment.

That's the jump signal,

and this is a go-go-go!

Who will be the first to find one yellow ball

and put it into their cylinder?

Will it be Major Ben of the Paras or Scott the postman?

I know who my money's on.

Time to enter the drop zone.

And all eyes, then, on Major Ben of 3 Para -

arms out, body rigid, steely jaw.

Scott looks like he's just bombing someone in the local swimming pool.

They're neck and neck,

but that's about to change.

Major Ben, with all his training,

will want to make this a textbook landing,

won't want to let the regiment down.

Scott's got three yellow balls floating next to his head.

I wonder if he's noticed them?

Anyway, it's time to witness the Para roll! Here it comes!

Yes! Wow!

I've always wanted to see that done properly.

Actually, I don't think his legs are supposed to do that.

Oh, that just looks silly!

So the race is on. Who'll be the quickest to spring into action,

grab a ball and stick it down the tube?

Major Ben trying to get these enormous legs under control.

While Scott is having some sort of duvet day.

Oh, no, he's not, he's found something! It's a yellow ball!

But what about Major Ben? He's got one too!

This is neck and neck -

just a question of who can deliver it the quickest.

Postman Scott has got a slight edge

but Major Ben really springing into action now - look at that reach!

Oh, there's nothing in this!

It's going to be close.

This could be anyone's!

Has Major Ben done it?

Poor old Scott never stood a chance

against such a highly trained, well-oiled...

Hang on, hang on.

Major Ben's fluffed it.

And possibly given himself a nasty chin burn too!

Which means Postman Scott's got it!

That's what years of picking up things, licking them,

sticking them onto things, putting them through things into other things,

sometimes a few days late, will get you!

Always knew he'd be good at this!

-A postman always delivers!

-Yes!

All right, hands up, I thought he would lose.

Ah, well done, buddy.

Look at you, congratulations!

Well done! Did you have a plan?

I planned to win! But I was confident when I was up there

and when that gun went, I was there. I knew I'd have it.

Well done. Congratulations, buddy.

Well done. Let's look at the scores so far.

So it's early doors as Scott scores.

Can the Harrops hurry up

and square things up?

APPLAUSE

That is the beginning of the show. We've still got a long way to go.

Right, who's up for challenge number two, yeah?

OK, have a look at this.

Standing opposite each other,

both players face a 4m glass screen.

On hearing the reflex trigger,

they must throw the contents of a standard paint tin

toward that glass.

The first drop of paint to hit the glass will win that player a point.

Right, now, families, I know you're looking at me

and you're probably going, "Oh, Shane, come on,

"picking up a pot of paint and throwing it at a piece of glass!"

Of course, it does look easy but it's all about the technique -

do you throw it up, throw it forward? It's all about technique -

so guys get in to your huddles, decide who'll play challenge two.

-Yeah, I'd take it.

-I won't take this.

You won't do this one? Are you sure?

-No, I'm just a bit weak. I won't take it.

-I'll take it.

-Yeah? Nail this?

-Yeah.

It hasn't got handles on it. It's literally just a tin.

I think this one you'll need to be quick off the draw

-cos it's going to be micro seconds, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-The throw will be important.

-Now you're probably thinking like me,

it looks very straightforward, and it is, really, but of course

when you've got the cameras, the lights, and the pressure's on

it's all about split second timing, how quick do you pick the can up,

which direction you throw in and it is really all about timing.

So it will be interesting to see who'll play this one.

Right, families, if you'd like to turn around and face the front,

let's find out who's playing. Take a step forward.

It's 31-year-old Wayne,

who plays golf, so he'll have good hand-to-eye co-ordination

but what are his interior design skills like?

Against Sam, the youngest Harrop brother,

who has plenty of paint experience,

having just redecorated his new house!

So, this is DIY, Reflex style.

Do you think he'll want to get this to impress you

because he's up against you?

Definitely, yeah. No, he's going to do it. He's going to win.

-He will do it, definitely.

-Will he gloat?

Absolutely!

LAUGHTER

Well, fellas, what are his DIY skills like?

-I don't think he'll need them on this.

-He's still practising.

-We need these points to get back in the game, all right, fellas?

-Yep.

OK, well, it's Sam versus Wayne the Fly.

APPLAUSE

-Fellas, are you ready for this challenge?

-Yeah.

Let's play.

This going to be one hell of a paint fight at the decorator's corral.

Each pot contains 2.5 litres of paint.

The question is, what are these two gunslingers packing?

Perhaps Sam's chosen a brilliant white one-coat gloss.

Maybe Wayne's opted for a simple oil-based wood primer.

We're about to find out...

..who will be quickest off the draw,

any second now.

Here they go!

Sam's first to react with a straightforward chuck,

while Wayne's using more of a lasso motion. That can't be right.

It's going up, not across!

But Sam's technique is perfect,

as is his paint - a mellow tangerine emulsion

with a hint of postbox red. So warm!

That's a high trajectory but travelling at speed.

Wayne's lasso style means his paint's going backwards,

which must surely slow it down - shame, because it looks lovely,

an eggshell paint in stormy plum

and it's a low odour, easy wipe and practical!

This is going to be close.

Which paint is going to hit the glass first?

Who's leaving with a point

and who's leaving just smelling of white spirits?

Both paints race toward the glass,

but in very different ways.

Oh, it looks like Wayne's stormy plum is catching up.

First drop to hit the screen will win!

And stormy plum has won!

Yes!

Which means Wayne scores the Hattrills another precious point!

Sam's not happy, and I don't blame him.

Wayne's made a complete mess. He's got paint everywhere!

And I don't think that colour scheme works at all!

Well done.

What happened out there?

My technique obviously wasn't quite as good.

-Matt, it's all down to you now, buddy.

-It is.

I feel a bit of pressure now.

There is a lot of pressure on you now, buddy!

Commiserations, but we've still got a long way to go.

He's going to be gloating now, isn't he?

-You can see him gloating.

-That's fine. He was amazing, yes.

I had faith in him and he delivered.

So of course, Danielle, we know you've got to be playing next,

but of course, let's look at our scores!

The win doubles the Hattrills' lead to 2.

What now can the Harrops do?

Still loads to play for, guys.

You're going to need challenge three to get back in the game, OK?

Let's have a look at challenge three.

Each player will stand under five suspended coloured water balloons.

On hearing the three-balloon sequence

they must smash the correct coloured balloons using their spiked mallet.

The player to burst the balloons in the correct order,

in the fastest time, will win that heat.

There are three heats

and the best out of three will win a point for their family.

Wow! Yeah, I do believe we know who's going to be playing this game,

so, Matt, Danielle, if you'd like to step forward.

So Danielle's giving away over a foot in height

but has impressive hand-to-eye sports skills.

While Matt is ten years older, but as the geek of the Harrop family

he's packing an excellent memory.

All right.

APPLAUSE

Well, without pointing out the obvious,

there is, er, a height advantage here, I do believe! Is that right?

Danielle! Heigh ho!

LAUGHTER

Believe it or not, this game suits Dan.

She does this sort of thing all the time...

What, wanders round hitting balloons?

LAUGHTER

Yeah, the colour co-ordination will be fine for Dan

and she's very quick so I have faith in her.

-Good. Right, guys, come on, you need this one.

-Yeah.

I want you to be able to get back in the game.

He's good with sequences, so he should be all right.

Let's see because he's a bit of a geek, isn't he?

-He's the geek of the family.

-A little bit, but he is, definitely.

Guys, we desperately need this point to get you back in the game

and it is three heats. Let's play.

So, the best of three heats will secure that precious point.

Victory for Danielle

will take the Hattrills to a commanding lead of three,

while the Harrops are desperate to get something onto the score board.

Nervous moments.

I'm pretty nervous as well, as I have to call out the sequence.

Haven't really done much of this stuff before, so here we go.

MICROPHONE FEEDBACK

Testing! One, two!

And the sequence is...

green, blue, red.

Well, they heard that all right!

And Danielle is quick to spring into action.

While it looks like brainy Matt's using his massive mind

to burst these balloons!

Five-foot-two Danielle smashes the green balloon.

Well, it's good to know she can reach them. That's important!

Matt's only just started moving and decided to use his mallet now.

Good idea. Don't think the mind power thing was working.

Danielle, one balloon ahead.

Blue one next.

Matt goes for the green, whilst looking across at the blue.

What's that green balloon doing?

Danielle's burst the blue

and Matt's burst...half the green?

I didn't even know you could do that.

Danielle's just got the red balloon to go.

Matt's got a face full of water, but he's burst the blue!

But I don't think he's going to catch Danielle.

Just the red balloon to get. Here she goes!

Oh, that's the pink one, Danielle!

The red one is on the end there.

You can tell, it's all red, red all over!

But look at this!

Brainy Matt's magnificent mind has sensed an opportunity.

Here he goes. Danielle can only watch.

He's going to smash this. Yes...

No, how did he miss that?

I mean, it's not even moving!

Well, they've ruined this game.

It was supposed to be dynamic and action-packed

and it just looks silly. I mean, look at that green balloon.

What's it doing?

MORRIS DANCING MUSIC

And this music is not helping.

Right, back to the game

but to be perfectly honest, the moment's gone.

Brainy Matt's won the first heat.

Hopefully they'll all do a bit better in the next one!

And the first heat goes to Matt.

APPLAUSE

Well, that's them back in the game now,

but it is the best of three heats.

Danielle, sadly, supposed to hit the red,

you hit the pink, didn't you? But as I said, it is best of three.

Let's play our second heat.

Right, take two, heat two.

Let's hope they can get it right this time!

Opening the sealed envelope...

Oh, this one's going to be good!

Here we go. Press the button.

The sequence is...

yellow, green, red.

Yeah, that was good, that felt natural.

Quick off the mark again is Danielle.

Matt still using that mind power thing. It doesn't work, Matt!

Danielle's nailed the yellow!

And she's moving straight onto the green. Good reactions!

Which is a lot more than I can say for brainy Matt.

At this rate, Danielle's going to have the yellow and the green

before Matt does anything.

Finally, here he goes.

Come on, Matt, your brothers need this win!

Yes, he's got the yellow!

But Danielle bursts the green and is one balloon ahead!

Matt's switching to the green balloon now

but Danielle's still in the lead.

Matt adjusts for the green

but Danielle only needs the red.

She won't make the same mistake again by hitting that pink balloon!

Anyway, they both have the yellow and green,

but now it's just a race to the red.

Can Danielle see anything behind that wall of water?

She's going to have to if she's going to beat Matt to the red.

now it's time to team up, OK? Who is going to get left behind?

Which of you families work best together? Who gets on best together?

Who maybe doesn't get on best? But one of you will get left behind

as we play challenge four.

Each pair of players will be fitted with an electronic button suit.

On hearing the reflex trigger

they must follow a 20-light sequence

alternating between each player

by finding and hitting each button that's illuminated.

First pair to complete this sequence in the fastest time

will score their family two points.

Aw, isn't that great, hey?

So, guys, want to talk about this one? Off you go, then!

I think me and Danielle should do it.

I think I'm going to be rapid on this one.

How do you feel about this?

I think given your confidence is up, you should definitely do it.

I was going to go me and you.

-Were you?

-Mmm, cos we're the same height.

I don't know if being the same height will help or not help,

I don't know. None of us have a martial arts background,

which might make a difference, but I doubt they have.

Ooh! It's heating up now, isn't it?

If it was me, though, for the Harrops, I'd get Matt to play

cos his confidence is up now, he was buzzing in that last round

and he done really well. But who does he play with?

Does he play with Sam

or does he get his tough GI Joe with the kung fu grip to play with him?

So that'll be interesting.

As for Danielle, she's feeling a little bit down at the moment.

I've got a feeling she'll hand it over to the two brothers to play.

But she's quick, though,

cos she proved how quick she was in that last game.

Let's go and find out.

Right, families, if you'd like to turn and face the front,

there are two points up for grabs in this challenge number four.

-Now, have you decided who is going to play challenge four?

-We have.

Bearing in mind we'll have to leave someone behind.

So, take a step forward.

APPLAUSE

Oh-ho! Bearing in mind we've doubled up the teams,

we're doubling up the points. Let's play.

So Scott and Danielle obviously think they work best together

and can overcome the towering brothers of Ben and Matt.

So each contestant

dressed in a rather fetching hi-tech suit of light bulbs,

which will turn on randomly in a 20-light sequence

that they must follow as quickly as possible.

Underneath is a full set of body armour, protection

from their partner's blows but also the occasional power surge.

When these bulbs fuse, it's like watching a firework go off!

APPLAUSE

Wow, so right, you guys,

it's 2-1 to the Hattrills.

Whatever happens in this game will change the score significantly

to either family. You're aware of that, aren't you?

There's two points up for grabs. How do you feel about being left behind?

-I think the best people have gone forward for this game.

-You sure?

Yeah, I'm confident they'll take it.

-What about you?

-Yeah, I think Ben and Matt will do a good job.

We can't afford to go 4-1 down.

Could this be personal between these two? Were they fighting siblings?

A little bit, they won't be afraid to give each other a bit of a...

Good. OK. As I've reminded you,

-there are two points in this, OK, guys?

-Come on.

-Are you ready?

-Yeah.

Woo! Let's play.

These two points would give the Hattrills a huge 4-1 lead,

while victory for the Harrops would put them ahead 3-2.

This is a pivotal moment in the competition.

Shame, then, that both couples look completely ridiculous.

Wayne and Sam thankful not to have to deal with all the pressure

and more importantly, the embarrassment of having to wear that

on national TV.

Here we go!

And both teams off to a ridiculous start. It's pure buffoonery.

See, look at that!

Nose flattener!

Already younger brother Ben taking out a lifetime's frustration

on his big brother's nose.

Danielle with a terrific head slap.

And so's that!

Matt's revenge on Ben

for that earlier nose flattener.

Ouch! I could watch this all day.

OK, that's enough. Move on!

OK, four bulbs into the game, and both couples are neck and neck

or in Danielle and Scott's case, bottom and elbow!

Remember, the first pair to hit 20 lit bulbs

bags those precious points!

But confusion reigns at the moment, things getting frantic now.

Cue the comedy up-tempo music!

Halfway through this game and it's ten apiece! This is close!

They're matching each other hit for hit!

Now it's nine-all.

Danielle can't find the bulb. It's right there!

And the panic really beginning to set in!

Scott trying to reach that elbow!

Come on, Scott! Oh, he's missed it!

Matt didn't, or Ben, or Scott,

or Matt, or Danielle.

They're all at it.

Five-all now, and it couldn't be any closer!

Oh, and that overly dramatic music change means something dramatic

is about to happen.

Matt and Ben are on four - no, three!

The Hattrills are on one.

No, they're not, they've done it!

Come on!

Oh, that was so close! The Harrops couldn't have gone any faster!

What a spectacle it was. Blackpool illuminations, eat your heart out!

So, we've reached the climax in tonight's battle of the families,

but there is still everything to play for as the families face each other

in the ultimate reaction showdown.

now we're playing as a family.

and of course, using your mind. Now, the way we play this game,

there's going to be a series of questions

on the TV screen in front go you.

The first one to 10 will win this challenge

and go on to play our end game, which is, of course, Moneyball,

where you will stand a chance of winning £20,000.

So the families will be asked a question

and presented with a series of answers.

The instant they see the correct one, they must race to the button.

The player with quickest reactions will score a point for their family.

But if they react to an incorrect answer, they will hand a point

over to the opposition.

will stand on a 3m tall podium.

Facing them are three high-speed cannons.

In the green phase,

15 high-impact balls are randomly fired towards them.

The player must make contact with as many of them as possible,

scoring a point for each.

Next is the red phase, where they face 15 more high-impact balls.

This time the player must now avoid every ball

as every one that makes contact subtracts a point.

If at the end of both phases any green points remain,

the family wins £10,000

and the chance to double their money in the Golden Ball challenge.
