Episode 9 The Voice: Louder on Two

Our penultimate show. Ricky Wilson will be here with

Christina Marie and tonight my final singing lesson. Don't say I didn't

we crack on, it is time for a chin wag just between the two of us in

think the coaches and their acts would be buckling down ahead of

Saturday's final. It seems there is time for a muck about on Team Kylie.

#... On fire... # That was the best thing ever. Lucky,

lucky boy. So, that is your little gossip for today. Thank you very

much. While we are all on tenterhooks as

to what the outcome will be on Saturday, one man may already have

an idea. We have reviewed the footage from back through the

series. It seems, one of the coaches may have a special gift. Just the

power of the suggestion. Very clever. Don't you feel like? Like,

this spiritual or mystical thing? She got me. Say, come on, Tom. Come

on, come on. # Scratch your ear, Will. What? No, your ear? My lip?

No, my ear. Chin. Please, Will, scratch your ear. My neck? Not you,

Tom. Gentleman I'm doing an impression of a horse. I give up. Oh

my ear is itchy now. I had my hand on my temples, I was psychically

receiving T I received it. I got a bunch of spam too. Give it up for

the delightful Mr Ricky Wilson. I nearly called you Wicky Rilson.

Nice work, Team Ricky on Saturday. You were worried about sharing the

stage with Christina Marie and Chris. How did it go for you? OK. I

made sure my riser was twice as high as theirs. I tried to get cut down

in rehearsals. For the fist time you didn't have to make the decision. It

was up to the public. Did that ease the pressure up? Not really. It was

bitter sweet. I love them both. I knew I was going to have to say

goodbye to one. I had that cloud over me. How anxious do you get

waiting for them to come on? Do you relax at any point during their

performances? I'm more relaxed than I thought I'd be because I trust in

their voices totally. I know they can pull it off. I'm not worried at

all about them singing, it is all about me. You have to do it again

this weekend. Christina Marie faced the public vote for the first time

and she did it. Why do you think people picked her over Chris? Why?

Yes. Oh, if I dare think about what the British public would do, I

wouldn't be doing this job, I would work at a bookies or something. I

love the fact that they have their finalist on Team Ricky, it is the

one they chose. It shows if you vote you get your way. It seems you have

had a riot on The Voice, as predicted. They made me say that.

How much can you remember from the show? I do like a quiz. We all love

a quiz. Time now to take our favourite rocker coach on a coach

trip down memory lane. Is that the coach? I'm in it. I'm

driving. Will.i.am on the back seat being noughty. I will ask you loads

baggy. I got embarrassed, you said I looked buff in my tight T-shirt. So

I thought I'd wear something looser. Don't worry about me. It is all talk

All scripted. Quus time. Out of 90 -- quiz time. Out of 90 blind

audition, how many times did you turn? 31. Oh, I have some options.

I'm not good at This change gear. You change gear. A22, 32, or 42. 32.

You are right. I was nearly right. It was a guess. Look at that. Out of

all the blind auditions, which act did you turn the quickest for? Anna

McLuckie. An extra point for how many seconds? It wasn't that quick.

I would say 12. 17. 56. It felt lake 1. One blind audition saw you

transported back to childhood days, back seat with your brother

listening to your parents' cassettes. What was the song?

Country Rhodes. John Denver. What was the car? Probably a Ford Escort.

We had a Ford Cortina. Flash. It was John Rafferty who sang that in the

auditions. Auditions we were reminded last week of your fabulous

way with words with your pitching. Not surprisingly, you didn't have a

lot of luck with this one but can you remember who it was to. This is

what you said, "We are going to go on days out, have matching T-shirts

printed. Borrow Will's hovercraft." Is it someone in the final?

Possibly. Jamie Johnson. You are good at this. This was more

successful. Who was it to? "I'm still thinking about the voice I

just heard and I'm thinking about the next time I'm going to hear it."

Again and again and again, Christina Marie. It is. And one last question.

OK. How many episodes of Midsummer murders have you watched? The thing

is everyone seems like the same episode to me. I have watched a lot

but always the same outcome. Is the right answer. Well done. And because

you have been such a good bien didn't slip down the crack, we have

a treat for you. It is a special acoustic performance from Chris we

I was just saying... Taking the mick out of me. How come Will gets the

glass harmonica. You haven't seen what we have got lined you up for

you. We have Morris dancers... Quick, get on the phone.

Congratulations. Watching at home on Saturday you seemed calm before. I

was a lot calmer than the quarter-finals, definitely. I think

it was partly because I knew what to expect and partly because of the

song I was sing singing, compared to some of the other ones, it was a

strong, feminine song. I felt strong and feminine. So did I. You looked

like it. Go easy on the mascara. What? What are you saying Daily

Mail? You looked beautiful as ever. People

online have gone crackers for you. Clary from Bristol says "Christina

Marie sounds like Christina Aguilera, definitely a good thing.

Incredible voice ""High praise, indeed. A massive comparison. Wow.

Thank you very much Clary. Thank you.

She sounds more like Christina Marie. Obviously she has strength

and for somebody to hear that and say I have that strength, amazing.

Thank you very much. She got it. You could argue that sometimes it is

easy for the viewers at home to connect with a ballad or a torch

song and this was a bit of a rock rift in a way, going that big -- a

rockeriesk. But one you were willing to take. -- a rock risk. I wasn't

going to risk anything with Christina. I wouldn't dare to. But

you can play it safe every week and go for what I know will tug at the

heart strings and pick up the phones. I thought it was a chance to

see that bit of her that people fell in love with which she zl during

Power of Love with Nathan. It was awesome. -- with which she did

during Power of love. I don't want to win this with doing one thing

very well. She does but also she can do everything. I was scared of

coming across as a one trick pony. As much as as I love doing the

ballads and it is easier to connect emotionally. I thought I was going

to go out and have fun. It was a massive stage production. You had

Ninjas. Yes and pyramid things. I was quite intimidated. Will was

jealous. He was. If you can make Will jealous, you know it is going

all right. It is a winner. Quite an exhausting performance. A lot of

lung power in that song. Was it tiring for your voice? A little bit

but I did love T I loved the staging, going out there. -- I did

love it. I felt I had created a different kind of side of me during

that performance. It was a lot of fun. The final on Saturday. Have you

been hitting the campaign trail? It is like being a politician in a way

at this point? I know. I expect germane is feeling very much at

home. I have been doing some local press, the Bristol Post have been

lovely to me and BBC Radio Bristol and tweets and messages from local

people and people all over the world outside the UK. I have been looking

at your lineage and apparently lots of Scottish in your history and

Irish people. I am Irish. And don't forget I'm from Yorkshire. All those

Cornish ice-creams. We have enjoyed summers in Cornwall. How much

pressure is there on you, Ricky, with Christina Marie to pick the

right songs. We had a real pressurised day the other day, and

it was weird because we were looking for a perfect song. We were in the

dressing room playing loads of stuff. We played this song and we

were like - it was obviously right. We sang it and sang it. Because she

can sing incredibly well Thank you. We've noticed. But what I wanted was

to get the emotion across and the connection with the song. You

connected so well. We all had a bit of a meltdown. Were there tears? Did

you have to have a cuddle? Yeah. I can't wait for people to see it on

Saturday night. It is a real moment. You are going to do a new number. Is

this the song you are talking about. Are we allowed to tell what it is?

Of course, go for it. If you don't want to know, go and make a cup of

tea now. Yes, cover your ears up now, if you don't want to know. Is

it Shirley Bassey? You know. It is Coldplay, Fix You. It is such a good

build-up as well. I'm seeing tears. I think there will be a lot of

emotion. We both said T then you read through the lyrics you said -

they are really relevant to what is happening. Not with the unconscious

cupeling, but, the competition. Yeah. Also, you are going to duet.

Please tell me you are doing Islands in the Stream. I said it that to

Ricky he was - you know what, I'm not feeling it. Keith Harris and or

have I. We will not tell you what that is. Are we not? We can have a

guess. And you revisit one of your favourite performances. Difficult to

choose, they have all been awesome. Which have your chosen? I have

decided to go with the one that meant the most to me emotionally and

I've picked the Power of Love which was my battle performance with

Nathan. With Nathan He made that special to me. He is now one of my

closest friends. He is going to be there on Saturday. I want to go out

and sing it for him. We love Nathan. He is so supportive of everyone on

Team Ricky. He is still around and helping everyone. Waving the

banners. Well, throughout the competitionic has been there for

you, smiling and beaming and supporting you. He is not the only

one who loves you to pieces. Look at this. Christina is an amazing

sister. I look up to her. She is my rock, basically. She was always

helpful around the house. She used to sing and dance any chance she

got. As a student, Christina was vibrant and strong. Everybody knew

about Christina's voice. She sang in lessons. She used to sing in the

shows. She just lives to sing. Christina doesn't realise how good

she is. I'm very proud of Christina being on

The Voice. She has come so far. She has become more mature and more

confident. I think she is a real inspiration to all the young people

out there. This is her dream. She started from singing in her bedroom

to now. We have seen her grow up to be a beautiful young lady that can

sing and is now doing something with her voice. I'm so proud. You are

such a lovely, lovely girl. She is an amazing daughter to me. She's

worked so hard. And if anybody deserves to get somewhere, with her

singing career, it's Christina. Oh, your lovely mum and sister R

they going to be there on Saturday? They will. I got a bit glassy-eyed.

Rein it in. They are the two most important people in my life. Woo,

woo, woo. Two of the most important. I couldn't have done not only this

show but lots of things in my life without them by my side. I am happy

they will be there on Saturday. I can't wait to see them. They are

D is for diction. What I mean by diction is your pronunciation of the

words. Over-pronounce or underpronounce can make a

difference. Diction is essential to help people understand the story you

are telling when you are singing. There are certain exercises you can

use to practice your diction. For instance there is Tip of the tuning,

the teeth, the lips. Unique, New York, unique New York. There is also

one about the pheasant plucker, but we will not go there today.

Now after a week of hard graft, perfecting my vocals, it is almost

time for me to join the long list of performers who have murdered

Unchained Melody. Brace yourself. Here is Maureen with her final

masterclass. I'm Maureen Scott. A singing teacher and vocal coach. I

have taught loads of popstars. I have taught people in major West End

shows. I mean the whole thing about teaching singing is rewarding.

Welcome Maureen. Thank you so much for coming back and not giving up on

this lost cause. Lots of people joining in at home with all the

exercises you have been doing Good. Really good. Today we will learn

about how to use your tuning be properly and how to belt -- use your

tongue. But some favourites. A warm-up. A quick warm-up.

The big smile in the tloe. Giggle, giggle. I can feel it now Now we are

just going to do this. Me, Mas, me, Mas, me.

Me, ma me ma me Release. Me, ma me ma me.

Well done. Well done. I enjoyed that. Well done, really

good. Well connected to the body. Release of the belly. Fantastic. It

just needs practice all the time. The next thing we will look at is

the tongue. I will give you tongue exercises. Roll the tongue around

the teeth. I have a lot of teeth And the other way. And the other way.

Why do we do this? Well, the tongue root is very strong. If you put your

thumb here and you go oh, oh, oh, you can feel that, that's Mr Bean

speaking. Really? You don't want that. You don't want to be Mr Bean.

No. So it has to stay high up on the top back teeth, wide and flat. OK.

So tongue exercises, touch your nose with your tongue and your chin and

cheek and other cheek Again, nose, nose.

Chin, chin. OK, that will do, well done. That's

enough of that. I can curl it. It is hereditary You don't want the curled

up bit. You want it twisted like... Oh, that's clever. I can do it one

way, I can't do the other We are doing this to warm up our tongue to

help with the whole... Also, so the muscle at the back of the tongue, it

doesn't want to drop. And the tip of the tongue always stays behind the

bottom teeth. The back is up here on the teeth. The tip is down here,

there. OK. Let's go on to belting. Shall we? A good idea. Hold tight

The breath changes for belting. It is higher. So the rib cage expands.

So you go - with a quick breath. Now pull your shoulder blades down and

look up. Belting is singing like - like Christina Marie It is all the

things the singers go. You don't need so much air flow. You need less

air. By controlling that, by anchoring, which means you use the

larger muscles in your body to help control these muscles in the larynx.

So a high breath. Not your shoulders, and expand the rib stage

cage Now push me away here and go up and go aye. Aye.

R Feel that. Feel my rib here. Oh, I can feel that. OK. That's what you

are doing. Just do that now. Go. Here we go. Look up and go yeah. Oh

yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Fantastic. ! Fantastic, great. All right. You

have understood all that. I think so. So, listen, when, in your larynx

you have two cartilages, one on top of the other, when we sing pretty,

the one here stretches the vocal chords. The one underneath, when you

belt drops back and keeps the vocal folds think. So you go, eeeee.

Shall I try that? Eeee? OK. Hear a shift.

Now you are moving it. Well done. ! All right, shall we sing? Let's try.

I will do a line. Then you do a line. All right. So if I go in

speech quality, like talking with a big smile here. Big smile. OK.
