'As we head for the weekend, Angie, what have you got for us?'

0:00:030:00:06

'Well, a lot of dry weather, so that's the good news.

0:00:060:00:08

'There's plenty of scope for getting things done outdoors this weekend,

0:00:080:00:11

'although it won't always...'

0:00:110:00:13

Well, I've been based here as a weather forecaster at

0:00:130:00:15

BBC Northern Ireland since January 1996, would you believe?

0:00:150:00:19

Quite a long time and it has flown in, basically

0:00:190:00:21

because our weather is changing all the time.

0:00:210:00:24

It's just always interesting. Every day's different.

0:00:240:00:26

Today got off to quite a dismal start...

0:00:260:00:28

'You think back, forecasters actually had to sit down

0:00:280:00:30

'and manually draw charts,

0:00:300:00:33

'but technology has brought that on leaps and bounds.

0:00:330:00:35

'It means we can get the information out to the public

0:00:350:00:38

'a lot quicker, as well.'

0:00:380:00:40

We have a conference twice a day on most shifts,

0:00:400:00:43

where all the regions and nations come together.

0:00:430:00:46

-Hi, it's Cee in Belfast.

-Hi.

0:00:460:00:49

-Hi, Steve, how are you?

-Yes, all right, thanks.

0:00:490:00:51

'And then, from that, we can ask questions that are more

0:00:510:00:55

'specific to Northern Ireland.'

0:00:550:00:57

Although they give us the weather story,

0:00:570:01:00

they don't know the detail of Northern Ireland like we do.

0:01:000:01:03

We have our own little microclimates all dotted around Northern Ireland.

0:01:030:01:06

So, for example, in County Down, it tends to be drier,

0:01:060:01:08

but whereas you have Fermanagh

0:01:080:01:10

in the South West, it tends to be a lot wetter,

0:01:100:01:12

because that's where our weather systems come in.

0:01:120:01:14

Then, the North Coast, it's ideal, when it's windy, for surfers.

0:01:140:01:17

We're right on the edge of a huge sea mass.

0:01:170:01:20

We're right on the edge of a continent.

0:01:200:01:21

We're also at a junction between polar cold air to the north

0:01:210:01:25

and warm air, tropical air to the south.

0:01:250:01:28

So, that changes our weather all the time.

0:01:280:01:30

When people are working during the week, maybe the forecast

0:01:300:01:33

isn't as important, apart from maybe in the morning, how are you

0:01:330:01:35

going to get to work, if the weather is going to disrupt things.

0:01:350:01:38

But also, everybody's looking forward to the weekend.

0:01:380:01:41

Doing the weather is a very functional thing.

0:01:410:01:43

It's about being out there, it's about getting out

0:01:430:01:45

and making the most of the day.

0:01:450:01:47

And that's really what I'm trying to get across

0:01:470:01:49

every time I do a forecast.

0:01:490:01:51

When can you get out? When can you do the great stuff?

0:01:510:01:53

'These are the kind of places people take pictures of

0:01:530:01:55

'when they're out and about on their time off.

0:01:550:01:57

'Gives you an idea of how your forecast...

0:01:570:02:00

'Is it going to influence what people do for the weekend?'

0:02:000:02:04

Isn't that nice?

0:02:040:02:05

People will e-mail you and go,

0:02:050:02:07

"Oh, thanks for putting my picture up."

0:02:070:02:09

Or "That was a really nice shot of such and such a place.

0:02:090:02:12

"I didn't know where that was."

0:02:120:02:14

So it's definitely something that people like to see.

0:02:140:02:18

That's beautiful. Look at the lovely colours.

0:02:180:02:20

I like a little bit of sunshine.

0:02:200:02:22

Always puts a smile on people's face. I like a little bit of warmth.

0:02:220:02:25

That's not to say I don't like a frosty, crisp, winter's morning,

0:02:250:02:28

when the sun's shining, as well, cos that's equally beautiful.

0:02:280:02:31

I love snow.

0:02:310:02:32

When we have one single flake of snow,

0:02:320:02:34

everybody's online, talking to you about it.

0:02:340:02:37

I'm a sunshiny kind of guy. I only do weather when it's good.

0:02:370:02:40

I love thunderstorms.

0:02:400:02:41

I would also like to go to the States

0:02:410:02:44

and do a bit of storm chasing.

0:02:440:02:46

If BBC Newsline wants to fund me to go and do that, hey,

0:02:460:02:49

I'm happy to do it.
