Forgotten Girls of Dhaka

On the outskirts of bank then sleep populated capital city, temp one,

sits this slum. Individual identities get lost, out of the

control of the poorest and most vulnerable. Girls have to grow up

fast. For teenage girls living in this

slum, life is tough. The choices and therefore the identity of his

girls, married, beaten and abandoned before they have even reached 16.

Amid the chaos of globalisation, Dhaka is a city bursting at the

seams. This slum is home to thousands of

girls struggling to be heard. 40,000 people live here, crammed onto this

live and die here. It is a patriarchal society where life

decisions are made for girls when they are still children. Unmarried

women are at risk of abuse simply walking down the street, some girls

17-year-old Asma. She was married two years ago.

with her mother, lively. Despite only talking to the

18-year-old boy, rumours spread and tarnished reputation in the

community. At the end of the week she is due to take a rare day off

from work at the garment factory to marry him.

Having been left by her husband, Asma is discovering a new identity

as a thread cutter in a nearby factory.

Growing up in this slum is tough, but despite the harsh realities girl
