Coming up next, it is World On The Move. | :00:00. | :00:21.
On the morning of New Year's Day 1914, the first scheduled commercial | :00:22. | :00:30.
airline flight took off from St Petersburg in Florida and made a 23 | :00:31. | :00:37.
powered journey across the bay to tamper -- 23 minute journey. The ex- | :00:38. | :00:45.
mayor of St Petersburg paid $400, around $5,000 in today's money. For | :00:46. | :00:54.
the privilege. In 2016, over 3 billion passengers will board an | :00:55. | :00:57.
aircraft somewhere on earth. Some will be travelling for business, and | :00:58. | :01:03.
others will be flying to the friends and relatives. Many will be fleeing | :01:04. | :01:07.
war and hunger, in search of a new life. One place with a claim on | :01:08. | :01:14.
being the world's largest intersection is Dubai International | :01:15. | :01:16.
Airport in the United Arab Emirates. More people from more | :01:17. | :01:22.
countries and cultures passed through Dubai than any other hub in | :01:23. | :01:30.
the world. Keeping track of all the arrivals and departures is | :01:31. | :01:35.
difficult, even if you are standing in the observation tower. Some 1200 | :01:36. | :01:39.
planes take off and land in Dubai every day. That is almost one a | :01:40. | :01:47.
minute. But what compels all of those people to travel? Why are we | :01:48. | :01:52.
moving around our planet more frequently than ever before? To find | :01:53. | :01:57.
out, we sent a team to Dubai's main international airport to talk to the | :01:58. | :02:03.
people passing through. For a start, where were they doing? -- going as | :02:04. | :02:17.
Mac Delhi. Frankfurt. Paris. Bombay. Turkey. Amsterdam. Istanbul. Paris. | :02:18. | :02:36.
Nairobi. Gangnam Style! London! Pakistan. Vienna. Barcelona. New | :02:37. | :02:50.
Delhi. Poland. Johannesburg. United States. London Gatwick. Beirut. | :02:51. | :03:11.
France. New Delhi. Istanbul. Zurich! For many centuries you travel in | :03:12. | :03:18.
search of food, shelter, or are more forgiving climate but another sort | :03:19. | :03:24.
of journey was also wildly popular, and it was more about making a | :03:25. | :03:25.
spiritual discovery. I will pray to the gods to arrange | :03:26. | :03:58.
something for me, and help me. For as long as he can remember, he | :03:59. | :04:02.
dreams of going to make up on a pilgrimage. For him, this dream | :04:03. | :04:09.
seemed very far away from the reality. | :04:10. | :04:24.
He needed a miracle, and one came in the form of a generous child. | :04:25. | :04:53.
After taking his first ever international flight, he arrived in | :04:54. | :05:02.
Mecca, joining thousands of pilgrims who have made similar trips to his. | :05:03. | :05:09.
But when he first entered the mosque, he was prevented from | :05:10. | :05:16.
fulfilling his lifelong desire, to touch a part of the holy | :05:17. | :05:17.
Blackstone. Of course, for as long as there have | :05:18. | :06:45.
been religious pilgrimages, there have been journeys undertaken for a | :06:46. | :06:52.
more ugly purpose. Money and trade. And even in the day's world of | :06:53. | :06:57.
instant cash transfer, some people still leave their homes to buy and | :06:58. | :07:01.
sell commodities, and experience the thrill of a good deal. | :07:02. | :07:12.
Bought theirs. They exchanged this. I made this, I exchange this. And | :07:13. | :07:21.
some other ones through their also in the bag. | :07:22. | :07:35.
Dubai has long been a magnet for gold traders and fortune seekers and | :07:36. | :07:44.
it is no surprise why. 20% of the world's told passes through the city | :07:45. | :07:48.
each year, and some of it is available at a price that make deals | :07:49. | :07:58.
-- dealers in London's eyes water. You bring some old gold or you bring | :07:59. | :08:02.
the gold coin, they bring designs for you, you choose a design you | :08:03. | :08:07.
want write down the name. And they tell you what, if you are OK with | :08:08. | :08:11.
what to do, they tell you the size. If you bring four grams, they tell | :08:12. | :08:16.
you this size will bring new four grams. You bring more, they tell you | :08:17. | :08:20.
what it will do. Then if you want bigger you bring more grams. So we | :08:21. | :08:23.
brought the grams and we chose our design, we wrote down the name, and | :08:24. | :08:28.
they gave us two days to come for it. Then we came back on everything | :08:29. | :08:34.
was OK. It is getting off your old, overused gold for new ones for you | :08:35. | :08:42.
to enjoy. They are not the only ones to make a holiday out of swapping | :08:43. | :08:46.
gold jewellery. Thousands of tourists visit the United Arab | :08:47. | :08:52.
Emirates to trade. And Ugochi says many of her friends in Nigeria do | :08:53. | :08:56.
the same thing. We got the gold are full of whiskey. I want to give it | :08:57. | :09:00.
to a special friend of ours. Yes, because gold label is quite reserved | :09:01. | :09:02.
bottle. Gold, for me, is quite treasured. | :09:03. | :09:16.
You can... It doesn't, the value does not reduce in standard. And I | :09:17. | :09:23.
like it. I don't know, I was brought up with it, so I like it. It is not | :09:24. | :09:35.
just metals that people travel to trade. One ancient form of transport | :09:36. | :09:43.
is now a cash cow. Well, camel. These men are travelling through the | :09:44. | :09:52.
region to sell their finest racing camels to sheikhs and investors in | :09:53. | :10:03.
markets in places like Qatar, and their home country. | :10:04. | :12:22.
In the past, camel racing in the Gulf has been associated with the | :12:23. | :12:28.
exploitation of very young children who were favoured as jockeys because | :12:29. | :12:32.
of their lightweight. But much has changed in the last ten years. | :12:33. | :13:13.
Camel racing is widely associated with... But the sport is spreading | :13:14. | :13:21.
to places like Mongolia and Australia. And it could even spread | :13:22. | :13:23.
to cooler climes. # They need a brother's | :13:24. | :13:54.
leadership... Once if you were a dancer and wanted to work in musical | :13:55. | :13:59.
theatre, you would head to New York's Broadway or London's West | :14:00. | :14:03.
End. But international travel has changed our perceptions of where the | :14:04. | :14:05.
centres of art and culture are. I'm going to train with a | :14:06. | :14:26.
contemporary dance company based in Mumbai. What drew me to Mumbai is I | :14:27. | :14:34.
saw the country out there do the first to last year and I did a | :14:35. | :14:38.
workshop with them and I knew the ballet master and I knew the | :14:39. | :14:42.
contemporary teacher from the time at a previous company based in | :14:43. | :14:47.
Israel. They're very interested in an international relationships, and | :14:48. | :14:50.
very interested in cross cultures, they bring in people from Israel and | :14:51. | :14:54.
the US and they're looking to expand it even more. So I'm coming back | :14:55. | :14:59.
with aspirations of possibly teaching and bringing an American | :15:00. | :15:03.
flavour to their contemporary style, their way of taking class and | :15:04. | :15:04.
approaching class. My previous training was primarily | :15:05. | :15:25.
in musical theatre, so I went to the arts academy, which is a boarding | :15:26. | :15:28.
arts high school based in California. While I was there I | :15:29. | :15:33.
rediscovered dance and I decided that is what I wanted to focus on so | :15:34. | :15:39.
I put theatre and music to the side and focused on dance, I looked for | :15:40. | :15:43.
universities and colleges with a dance programme. And then when I | :15:44. | :15:55.
graduated musical theatre kind of snap back up on me, it wasn't in my | :15:56. | :16:00.
periphery at all. I think concert dance is where I'm going to go all | :16:01. | :16:04.
maybe commercial industrial stuff. Senior year I auditioned for my | :16:05. | :16:08.
first Equity actors union show and it was Xanadu and it was a code pro, | :16:09. | :16:13.
so we started at a couple of theatres in Seattle and we took the | :16:14. | :16:18.
showdown to Arizona and for that to be my first experience is, like, oh | :16:19. | :16:25.
my God. I feel incredibly in favour with the universe. | :16:26. | :16:35.
And I just finished doing How to 60 in business without really trying at | :16:36. | :16:48.
the fifth Ave Theatre. -- six seed. So now I'm on my way | :16:49. | :17:02.
back, on my way back to man by for a little bit and then my spirit is | :17:03. | :17:06.
telling me to go to New York. So that's the step after Mumbai. | :17:07. | :17:15.
Richard is free to travel the world and ply his craft. But for some, | :17:16. | :17:21.
artistic expression comes at a price. These three soap actors are | :17:22. | :17:25.
superstars in Saudi Arabia and they have come to Dubai to film a drama | :17:26. | :17:33.
for prime time in the season where people tend to relax after a day of | :17:34. | :17:37.
fasting with some time at the TV. Nothing unusual about that except is | :17:38. | :17:44.
one of the only women on camera in the kingdom. | :17:45. | :19:36.
But there is one luxury that affordable air travel has brought us | :19:37. | :19:42.
it is the ability to move around the world just to meet new people and | :19:43. | :19:44.
try new things -- if there is. They tried to interview me on how | :19:45. | :19:58.
awesome my life is, it's it's actually been that way all the | :19:59. | :20:01.
time. I came to Dubai because I believe so that Dubai is the place | :20:02. | :20:05.
where you can get a lot of opportunities for a job. You can | :20:06. | :20:09.
grow professionally the way much faster than somewhere in Europe, | :20:10. | :20:14.
it's way much harder in Europe. For example, in Slovakia, more people | :20:15. | :20:19.
are jobless than in Dubai. I came here by myself and I found a job | :20:20. | :20:24.
right away. I just took my CV to a couple of restaurants and they gave | :20:25. | :20:27.
me a job. There's nowhere like Dubai, right? Only New York. | :20:28. | :20:45.
I just got my dream job, which means I'm going to travel the world and | :20:46. | :20:52.
I'm going to become a cabin crew. After a hard time I had, I applied | :20:53. | :20:56.
seven times and I never got a chance, I finally beat it and I'm | :20:57. | :21:00.
finally going to be there. So, yeah, see you in the air then! | :21:01. | :21:06.
Mostly Dubai is like you work and then you go out and you go party, | :21:07. | :21:15.
you spend all your money, then you go back to work, you try to reach | :21:16. | :21:20.
again the point when you get your tips done and your money done and | :21:21. | :21:23.
then you go party against. There's a couple of times when you have time | :21:24. | :21:28.
to go sleep. These are the pictures with my friends from my last party. | :21:29. | :21:32.
A lot of people here in Dubai are all so lonely because maybe they | :21:33. | :21:37.
cannot get the culture. Also Dubai has a lot of rules, not everyone can | :21:38. | :21:42.
access that. First time when I got here I thought, hell, no, I'm not | :21:43. | :21:46.
going to do that. Then it was, like, if I have to, you have to follow the | :21:47. | :21:50.
rules if you want to live here. If you have a boyfriend you can't go | :21:51. | :21:56.
out and, like, hang out together and kiss together and be, like, yeah, | :21:57. | :21:57.
baby! I got a henna I didn't want to look | :21:58. | :22:13.
like because I didn't get a tan so I got a henna so people will think she | :22:14. | :22:21.
came from Dubai, so I will get the henna at least, it's a fake tattoo. | :22:22. | :22:23. |
