On the morning of New Year's Day 1914, the first scheduled commercial

airline flight took off from St Petersburg in Florida and made a 23

powered journey across the bay to tamper -- 23 minute journey. The ex-

mayor of St Petersburg paid $400, around $5,000 in today's money. For

the privilege. In 2016, over 3 billion passengers will board an

aircraft somewhere on earth. Some will be travelling for business, and

others will be flying to the friends and relatives. Many will be fleeing

war and hunger, in search of a new life. One place with a claim on

being the world's largest intersection is Dubai International

Airport in the United Arab Emirates. More people from more

countries and cultures passed through Dubai than any other hub in

the world. Keeping track of all the arrivals and departures is

difficult, even if you are standing in the observation tower. Some 1200

planes take off and land in Dubai every day. That is almost one a

minute. But what compels all of those people to travel? Why are we

moving around our planet more frequently than ever before? To find

out, we sent a team to Dubai's main international airport to talk to the

people passing through. For a start, where were they doing? -- going as

Mac Delhi. Frankfurt. Paris. Bombay. Turkey. Amsterdam. Istanbul. Paris.

Nairobi. Gangnam Style! London! Pakistan. Vienna. Barcelona. New

Delhi. Poland. Johannesburg. United States. London Gatwick. Beirut.

France. New Delhi. Istanbul. Zurich! For many centuries you travel in

search of food, shelter, or are more forgiving climate but another sort

of journey was also wildly popular, and it was more about making a

spiritual discovery. I will pray to the gods to arrange

something for me, and help me. For as long as he can remember, he

dreams of going to make up on a pilgrimage. For him, this dream

seemed very far away from the reality.

He needed a miracle, and one came in the form of a generous child.

After taking his first ever international flight, he arrived in

Mecca, joining thousands of pilgrims who have made similar trips to his.

But when he first entered the mosque, he was prevented from

fulfilling his lifelong desire, to touch a part of the holy

Blackstone. Of course, for as long as there have

been religious pilgrimages, there have been journeys undertaken for a

more ugly purpose. Money and trade. And even in the day's world of

instant cash transfer, some people still leave their homes to buy and

sell commodities, and experience the thrill of a good deal.

Bought theirs. They exchanged this. I made this, I exchange this. And

some other ones through their also in the bag.

Dubai has long been a magnet for gold traders and fortune seekers and

it is no surprise why. 20% of the world's told passes through the city

each year, and some of it is available at a price that make deals

-- dealers in London's eyes water. You bring some old gold or you bring

the gold coin, they bring designs for you, you choose a design you

want write down the name. And they tell you what, if you are OK with

what to do, they tell you the size. If you bring four grams, they tell

you this size will bring new four grams. You bring more, they tell you

what it will do. Then if you want bigger you bring more grams. So we

brought the grams and we chose our design, we wrote down the name, and

they gave us two days to come for it. Then we came back on everything

was OK. It is getting off your old, overused gold for new ones for you

to enjoy. They are not the only ones to make a holiday out of swapping

gold jewellery. Thousands of tourists visit the United Arab

Emirates to trade. And Ugochi says many of her friends in Nigeria do

the same thing. We got the gold are full of whiskey. I want to give it

to a special friend of ours. Yes, because gold label is quite reserved

bottle. Gold, for me, is quite treasured.

You can... It doesn't, the value does not reduce in standard. And I

like it. I don't know, I was brought up with it, so I like it. It is not

just metals that people travel to trade. One ancient form of transport

is now a cash cow. Well, camel. These men are travelling through the

region to sell their finest racing camels to sheikhs and investors in

markets in places like Qatar, and their home country.

In the past, camel racing in the Gulf has been associated with the

exploitation of very young children who were favoured as jockeys because

of their lightweight. But much has changed in the last ten years.

Camel racing is widely associated with... But the sport is spreading

to places like Mongolia and Australia. And it could even spread

to cooler climes. # They need a brother's

leadership... Once if you were a dancer and wanted to work in musical

theatre, you would head to New York's Broadway or London's West

End. But international travel has changed our perceptions of where the

centres of art and culture are. I'm going to train with a

contemporary dance company based in Mumbai. What drew me to Mumbai is I

saw the country out there do the first to last year and I did a

workshop with them and I knew the ballet master and I knew the

contemporary teacher from the time at a previous company based in

Israel. They're very interested in an international relationships, and

very interested in cross cultures, they bring in people from Israel and

the US and they're looking to expand it even more. So I'm coming back

with aspirations of possibly teaching and bringing an American

flavour to their contemporary style, their way of taking class and

approaching class. My previous training was primarily

in musical theatre, so I went to the arts academy, which is a boarding

arts high school based in California. While I was there I

rediscovered dance and I decided that is what I wanted to focus on so

I put theatre and music to the side and focused on dance, I looked for

universities and colleges with a dance programme. And then when I

graduated musical theatre kind of snap back up on me, it wasn't in my

periphery at all. I think concert dance is where I'm going to go all

maybe commercial industrial stuff. Senior year I auditioned for my

first Equity actors union show and it was Xanadu and it was a code pro,

so we started at a couple of theatres in Seattle and we took the

showdown to Arizona and for that to be my first experience is, like, oh

my God. I feel incredibly in favour with the universe.

And I just finished doing How to 60 in business without really trying at

the fifth Ave Theatre. -- six seed. So now I'm on my way

back, on my way back to man by for a little bit and then my spirit is

telling me to go to New York. So that's the step after Mumbai.

Richard is free to travel the world and ply his craft. But for some,

artistic expression comes at a price. These three soap actors are

superstars in Saudi Arabia and they have come to Dubai to film a drama

for prime time in the season where people tend to relax after a day of

fasting with some time at the TV. Nothing unusual about that except is

one of the only women on camera in the kingdom.

But there is one luxury that affordable air travel has brought us

it is the ability to move around the world just to meet new people and

try new things -- if there is. They tried to interview me on how

awesome my life is, it's it's actually been that way all the

time. I came to Dubai because I believe so that Dubai is the place

where you can get a lot of opportunities for a job. You can

grow professionally the way much faster than somewhere in Europe,

it's way much harder in Europe. For example, in Slovakia, more people

are jobless than in Dubai. I came here by myself and I found a job

right away. I just took my CV to a couple of restaurants and they gave

me a job. There's nowhere like Dubai, right? Only New York.

I just got my dream job, which means I'm going to travel the world and

I'm going to become a cabin crew. After a hard time I had, I applied

seven times and I never got a chance, I finally beat it and I'm

finally going to be there. So, yeah, see you in the air then!

Mostly Dubai is like you work and then you go out and you go party,

you spend all your money, then you go back to work, you try to reach

again the point when you get your tips done and your money done and

then you go party against. There's a couple of times when you have time

to go sleep. These are the pictures with my friends from my last party.

A lot of people here in Dubai are all so lonely because maybe they

cannot get the culture. Also Dubai has a lot of rules, not everyone can

access that. First time when I got here I thought, hell, no, I'm not

going to do that. Then it was, like, if I have to, you have to follow the

rules if you want to live here. If you have a boyfriend you can't go

out and, like, hang out together and kiss together and be, like, yeah,

baby! I got a henna I didn't want to look

like because I didn't get a tan so I got a henna so people will think she

came from Dubai, so I will get the henna at least, it's a fake tattoo.
