-Yes, that's what we've been doing.

-Ginger has a sore on her teat.

-The piglets may have bitten her.

-They've torn her teat.

-It will heal with time.

-John will now examine Sandy,

-the pregnant sow.

-Poor Sandy is nowhere near

-the end of her pregnancy.

-But she is already having problems

-with her weight.

-I've seen Sandy in the field

-in the sty. She's in pig.

-She finds it difficult to walk.

-Rhug farms high quality organic meat

-and sells it all over the world.

-they follow the strict rules...

-..related to exporting meat

-and that's why Dyddgu is here.

-They need export certificates...

-..to send meat produce

-to countries not in the EU.

-Today, we have produce

-going to Hong Kong.

-beef, lamb and bacon.

-and maybe some duck.

-Dyddgu has to check

-every box of meat...

-..and guarantee

-the cuts of meat and confirm...

-..that they have come

-from the Rhug Estate.

-This work is quite complex

-and pressured...

-..because you have to make sure that

-you meet all the requirements...

-..and that you're completely happy.

-If they couldn't prove to me

-that a certain batch of meat...

-..had been

-through the system properly...

-..I could refuse

-to let it go.

-But it's never come to that.

-Dyddgu examines each box carefully.

-She studies every piece

-of meat individually...

-..to see if the description of the

-label corresponds to the contents.

-needs an operation to drain...

-..the painful growth in his cheek.

-It hurts, doesn't it, Chutney?

-More often than not a cat develops

-an abscess after a fight.

-He's a bit of a hard man, I think!

-Before starting the treatment, Erica

-has sedated the cat with a jab.

-We're just going to shave

-the fur around the abscess.

-It's important that the vet shaves

-off the fur before treatment...

-getting into the wound.

-She'd produced five pups by 7.30pm.

-After giving birth to the first

-five pups fairly easily...

-..Zeta got into difficulties.

-Her owners, Ifor and Mari decided

-to call the vet.

-At about 9.00pm, we spoke to the vet

-and we took her to the surgery.

-They had to perform a caesarean

-because one pup had died...

-..but another five were born alive,

-so we have a litter of ten.

-Everything has gone well since then.

-Ifor and Mari have been

-in the business...

-..of breeding and selling

-dogs for many years.

-They have three pairs of breeding

-dogs - black, yellow and red.

-We've been doing this

-for almost 25 years.

-We bought a Labrador for cash...

-..she had pups

-and the rest is history.

-We're doing a lot with the red ones,

-the fox red Labradors.

-We think the world of them.

-There aren't many of them around...

-..but they're becoming more common.

-They're easy to deal with.

-Sometimes, the owners have to help

-the mother to feed her young.

-When the mother is too tired...

-..or not fully recovered

-from a difficult birth.

-Because she had an operation,

-her milk hasn't come in very well.

-We give the pups a bit extra

-four or five times a day...

-..to keep them going.

-So that Zeta can get her strength

-back and produce more milk...

-..she has to have lots of nutritious

-food as often as possible.

-Zeta is fed five times a day.

-She has fresh chicken and dog food.

-She has a better life than I do!

-Because these dogs are clever

-and docile.

-They are suitable as pets

-and working dogs.

-People come from near and far

-to buy Labradors from Bontuchel.

-After a hard day's work...

-..the Wern's staff have got together

-at a restaurant in Ruthin...

-..to say goodbye

-to two members of staff.

-The motto of the vet is to work hard

-and play hard, especially Dyfrig.

-This is both a sad

-and a happy occasion.

-Kate is leaving us.

-She's going travelling.

-We'll be sorry to see her go.

-Nel is leaving to have a baby.

-That's a happy occasion.

-Two of the girls are getting married

-this weekend too.

-We're having a bit of a party.

-We don't often have an occasion

-to get everyone together.

-But it's nice to have a party...

-outside work.

-One of those leaving today is Nel...

-..but only temporarily,

-on maternity leave.

-Although the party is tonight,

-Nel finished work a week ago.

-But that wasn't her intention.

-Four days ago,

-I started having contractions...

-I had to go to hospital

-and stop work.

-It will be any day now.

-I'm not sure if any of the vets

-fancy delivering a baby?!

-But in spite of the vets' party,

-animals are still falling ill.

-Someone has to be on call.

-Dyddgu is the unlucky one tonight.

-I'm on call for farm animals

-and horses tonight.

-But, don't worry, I have a change

-of clothes in the car.

-I'm not going to birth a calf

-dressed like this.

-I have my phone.

-Who knows what will happen?

-Tonight, the phone in the surgery...

-..is diverted to Carys' home phone.

-She is the secretary in Bala.

-She then phones whichever vet

-is on call in the area.

-There are three of us on call

-in the area, one in Abergele...

-..and one in Llanrwst.

-Most of the overnight calls

-are quite mundane.

-But occasionally,

-there is an unusual call.

-What's the oddest call

-you've ever had?

-A horse that was stuck

-in a swimming pool.

-It was a Welsh pony, Section A.

-The pool was quite deep

-and they couldn't get him out.

-They'd tried to make some steps

-with bales, but it didn't work.

-They rang and asked for advice

-over the phone.

-They thought they could winch him

-out by his tail.

-I said that I would come out

-and sedate him.

-I was up to my waist in water

-in order to sedate him.

-Then the fire service put a hoist

-on him and lifted him out.

-That was very unusual.

-None of the farriers who work with

-us have ever had a call like that.

-I feel quite special that it was me

-that got that call.

-There have been no calls so far.

-Dyddgu hopes she'll at least

-be able to finish her supper.

-A few weeks ago, John saw Sandy...

-..the pregnant sow

-with walking difficulties.

-Sandy has now given birth

-to her piglets.

-She's back on her feet

-and getting better every day.
