-I'm Iwan Jones.

0:00:130:00:15

-I'm a toastmaster by trade.

0:00:160:00:18

-I live in Merthyr Tydfil.

0:00:180:00:20

-I was born over the border

-in England.

0:00:210:00:23

-My father was a tolls officer

-at the time.

0:00:240:00:26

-We moved to Holyhead

-because of his job...

0:00:270:00:30

-..when I was

-about four years old.

0:00:310:00:34

-I moved to England to work

-for a few years.

0:00:370:00:40

-Then I moved back to Wales

-and worked in Cardiff...

0:00:400:00:44

-..for the civil service.

0:00:450:00:46

-In the late 1970s,

-I joined South Wales Police.

0:00:470:00:51

-When I got to the end

-of my police career...

0:00:530:00:56

-..I decided

-I'd like to try and find ways...

0:00:560:01:02

-..of earning a living...

0:01:030:01:05

-..after retiring.

0:01:060:01:07

-I wondered what I could do

-with the skills I had.

0:01:080:01:11

-I looked online...

0:01:110:01:12

-..and found there was a guild

-of professional toastmasters.

-

0:01:130:01:18

-I went on a course and that's how

-I became a toastmaster.

0:01:190:01:25

-As a policeman, people didn't always

-look forward to seeing you arrive.

0:01:250:01:30

-But, as a toastmaster,

-you're always welcome.

0:01:300:01:33

-I think the red coat suggests

-that it's something ceremonial.

0:01:410:01:47

-But, to be honest, there is more

-organizing work to be done...

0:01:470:01:52

-..than anything else.

0:01:530:01:54

-Most of my work is at weddings.

0:01:540:01:58

-There is quite a lot of scope...

0:02:000:02:02

-..for things to go wrong

-on a wedding day.

0:02:030:02:06

-But my job is to make sure

-that everything runs smoothly...

0:02:060:02:10

-..throughout the day.

0:02:100:02:12

-I got a phone call

-from someone at the Assembly...

0:02:130:02:17

-..asking if I was available

-to be the toastmaster...

0:02:170:02:20

-..at the opening of the Assembly

-in Cardiff last June.

0:02:210:02:26

-An opportunity like that only comes

-along about once every five years.

0:02:260:02:31

-I was lucky because there

-is no other toastmaster in Wales...

0:02:310:02:36

-..who advertises himself

-as being able to work in Welsh.

0:02:360:02:40

-Historically,

-toastmasters are not a Welsh thing.

0:02:400:02:44

-They're an English tradition...

0:02:450:02:47

-..and people see them

-in that way.

0:02:480:02:50

-But I'm trying

-to change people's minds...

0:02:500:02:53

-..and make them

-see toastmasters as organizers...

0:02:530:02:56

-..rather than as ceremonial figures.

0:02:570:02:59

-They decided to use me

-during the ceremony itself.

0:03:060:03:10

-I had to announce the arrival

-of the Queen and the Royal Family.

0:03:110:03:15

-It was very interesting work.

0:03:170:03:19

-Once you've succeeded in doing

-something of that magnitude...

0:03:190:03:23

-..other things come very easily.
