-Preparing animals for a show

-Recently, Daloni met one farmer who

-began showing cattle at the top...

-..with a heifer

-bred on his own farm.

-Brithdir Farm,

-Betws Gwerfil Goch near Corwen...

-..is home to Tudur Edwards

-and his family.

-They farm 80 acres...

-..and have a herd of Texel sheep

-and fifteen Limousin cross cattle.

-Tudur has been breeding and showing

-cattle for other people for years.

-He is now having national success

-with his own stock.

-Do the cattle always give you

-a warm welcome, Tudur?

-Whenever I come up this high...

-..they rush to the gate

-to check out what's happening.

-We're quite high up.

-This is the top of Betws GG.

-There's one field higher than this.

-We can see all the way

-to Betws, Corwen and Cynwyd.

-On a clear day,

-you can see the Berwyn mountains.

-The cattle can graze healthily.

-At the top here, it's about

-1,000 feet above sea level.

-The air is very clean

-and the cattle love it here.

-We'll bring them inside

-in a couple of weeks.

-Are they all Limousin cross?

-They are Limousin cross

-and Belgian Blue cross.

-We also have two pure Limousin.

-I've been showing

-four or five of them.

-They have calves now.

-You've been preparing

-and showing animals for years.

-You're an old hand at it.

-When I left school,

-I went to Llysfasi College.

-I used to go to the Christmas sale

-at Ruthin...

-..and I thought

-I'd like to give it a go.

-That's how it began.

-I remember buying my first one...

-..from Eden Jones, Tyn-y-Wern,

-Owain Llyr's grandfather.

-He bought a Belgian Blue for me

-and I took it up to Birmingham...

-..and won a red card with it.

-That's when I caught the bug.

-These cattle are worth seeing,

-every one of them...

-..but the one wearing

-the red ear tag is rather special.

-Yes, she's very special.

-She's the mother of the heifers

-I've been showing this year.

-She'll be calving in a few weeks.

-She might have a place in the house,

-who knows?

-We've seen the mother.

-Let's go over and see the daughter.

-Here she is.

-This is THE heifer.

-This is the daughter

-we mentioned earlier.

-This is Biwt.

-Biwt was born and bred

-here at Brithdir.

-That's right. She'll be a year old

-at the end of November.

-Your bull is the father.

-Yes, the bull we saw earlier

-in the top field.

-We've seen her mother.

-Yes,

-she's a Limousin cross Belgian Blue.

-Biwt has done

-a fair bit of travelling.

-She went

-to the Royal Welsh Show in July.

-She was a young heifer then.

-She competed in the Baby Beef class

-for animals under 425kg.

-She weighed 368kg at the time.

-She was in the second heaviest

-class of the Baby Beef...

-..and she won that class.

-Then she was up against the heifer

-that had won the lighter class...

-..and she won again.

-Then she beat the steer

-in the Baby Beef.

-We were really pleased

-with her results.

-We thought that was the end

-of the Show for us.

-When it came to the Championship,

-against the older cattle...

-..when they slapped her rear end,

-I couldn't believe it.

-It was really fantastic.

-She was Overall Commercial Champion

-in this year's Royal Welsh Show.

-You then went on

-to the Beef Expo show at Carlisle.

-That was the first time we'd

-competed at the Beef Expo show.

-When we got there, people were

-flocking to the pen to see her...

-..because of what had happened

-earlier in the year at Llanelwedd.

-She won her class there.

-She then won Champion Heifer...

-..and went on to become

-Supreme Champion.

-It was very emotional at the time...

-..to think that we'd bred her

-here at home...

-..and she'd gone on to win

-at one of the biggest shows.

-It had been my ambition

-to win there.

-She's a perfect heifer.

-She has a beautiful head, an amazing

-body and she's a real character.

-Yes, she's BIWT-iful.

-Were you tempted to sell her?

-No. We'll go to the Winter Fair at

-Llanelwedd, to try our luck there.

-Really?

-Really?

-Yes.

-What are your hopes

-for the Winter Fair?

-The Winter Fair at Llanelwedd is

-one of the biggest fairs in Europe.

-Just to win a card there

-is a real achievement.

-My ambition and something

-I have always wanted to do...

-..is to come away from the show

-with the cup.

-Back at the Winter Fair...

-..Biwt is competing in the lighter

-weight heifer Limousin cross class.

-Because so many were competing...

-..the class was divided

-into four sections.

-Well, Garmon and Tudur, what

-happened in the competition?

-What was the result?

-She was in the lighter class

-for Limousin heifers.

-She came second to Dai Thomas. He

-won first prize and Biwt was second.

-Fantastic. What did judge

-Denley Jenkins say?

-This year, for the first time,

-they have a microphone...

-..and they give the reasons

-for their decisions.

-He didn't think she was long enough.

-There wasn't enough loin.

-We'll accept that. It's his opinion.

-We were happy to get a card here.

-Winning a card is difficult enough.

-To get second place is very good.

-but cakes for the Food Hall.

-We're often hearing these days

-of rural businesses closing down.

-But one family in Pentrecwrt near

-Llandysul employs local people...

-..and offers a service

-which enriches the local community.

-What a feast we have here!

-How many cakes are there?

-About 45.

-Amazing. How long has it taken

-to make just these?

-It's taken four hours to ice,

-marzipan and decorate them.

-We'd already spent time

-making the leaves and the berries.

-Mother does all that.

-We've both been working hard.

-How many do you sell

-at the Winter Fair?

-About 100.

-Hopefully a bit more this year.

-Do the same customers

-come back every year?

-Yes, it's nice to see them

-come back every year.

-They wish us a happy Christmas

-and buy a cake.

-you've been busy in the bakery...

-..since very early this morning.

-We started at 5.00am. We started

-with Welsh cakes and fairy cakes.

-It's a busy day!

-I know from experience

-that these cakes are very tasty.

-Where do you get the recipes?

-We use my two great-grandmothers'

-recipes. They enjoyed cooking.

-We also have my mother's recipes.

-We also use WI books

-and we mix them all up...

-..to come up with our own recipes.

-How many can you make in a morning?

-We've probably made

-over 1,000 butterfly cakes.

-There are other cakes too.

-Yes. We have Welsh cakes, sponges,

-Maids of Honours, bara brith.

-What else? Viennese biscuits,

-variety slices.

-We make lots of different things.

-You supply a lot of shops.

-Yes. We cover Ceredigion,

-Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

-About 49 shops sell our cakes.

-That's every week.

-You must be very organized.

-Yes. We have a very good

-organizer behind us.

-My mother does an excellent job

-of organizing us all.

-Although Enfys

-bakes on her parents' farm...

-..Enfys and husband Angus

-farm at Blaenwthan.

-They keep beef cattle,

-sheep and pigs.

-Angus also owns a veterinary surgery

-in Newcastle Emlyn.

-Between all the businesses,

-how many people do you employ?

-In total, about 20 staff. Some work

-full-time, others are part-time.

-Angus, it's an interesting career.

-Vetting - I've got to say,

-with all the work with TB...

-..and all the hassles

-in the industry...

-..it's not as much fun as it was.

-But it's a fantastic job.

-I get up in the morning,

-I go out and see all my friends.

-I do a job I love

-and get paid for it.

-You know, win win. Can't go wrong.

-The animals that you've got on

-the farm then go into the tea rooms.

-Supermarket beef is great

-if that's what you want.

-But there's no fat on it,

-we didn't find the taste was right.

-It was quite variable.

-And then, what happened was,

-I went to a farm one day...

-..and saw some fat

-little Aberdeen-cross heifers.

-So we took them home

-and we put those in the tea rooms.

-We really found the quality beef

-was doing well.

-When a local butcher said

-we had good beef...

-..even though

-we weren't buying it from him...

-..we knew we were doing

-something right.

-How do you get time

-to do everything?

-When we were really busy,

-I was coming to bed...

-..as Enfys was getting up to

-go baking - when we were lambing.

-It was nonsense.

-I was going to ask

-if you see each other at all!

-Best way - no chance to fall out!

-The farm's produce

-is used in the tea room...

-..in the centre of Cenarth village.

-It's very popular

-with visitors and locals alike.

-We bought this place seven years

-ago. It's grown every year.

-It feels very homely here.

-We want people to feel at home

-and we want them to come back.

-I've seen a group in the corner

-who are having a whale of a time.

-We call them the Llandysul crowd.

-They come every two weeks.

-They have a great time.

-They have a chat and a bit of banter

-- that's essential.

-It works both ways, doesn't it?

-Yes. If we enjoy having them,

-they enjoy coming here.

-They also tell other people to come.

-A lot of coaches come here.

-We sometimes have up to five a day.

-It's crazy on those days.

-We go up and down those steps

-if it's nice weather.

-How do you cope?

-We pull together and we run around

-like headless chickens!

-Local produce

-is obviously essential for you.

-Yes. We try to use local produce.

-All the cakes come from the bakery.

-We also have Cenarth cheese

-from down the road.

-My mother makes all the chutneys,

-jams and marmalades.

-We sell Jones crisps from Anglesey.

-We try to use Welsh produce.

-Quite a lot of the meat used

-is from the farm.

-Yes, we use beef, lamb and pork

-from the farm.

-The meat is used for Sunday lunch...

-..and we use mince

-to make lasagnes and pies.

-Everything here is home-made.

-It doesn't travel very far.

-No, not at all.

-From the farm to Tregaron, back to

-Pencader to be butchered...

-..and then back to the freezer here.

-It's put on the plate here.

-True local meat.

-Yes, indeed.

-It's important to have direct

-feedback from your customers.

-We have to keep the customers happy

-so that they come back.

-We could buy meat for the tea rooms

-cheaper than producing it ourselves.

-I have no doubt about that.

-We're on quite a high-cost system.

-We're on the quality end.

-But we've got to have the quality.

-We have a lot of repeat business.

-That's what we're looking for.

-How does the farm benefit

-from the tea rooms?

-It doesn't. Let's be honest.

-The tea room benefits from the farm!

-If you think dealing with

-supermarkets is hard for business...
