We Brits are brilliant at volunteering.

0:00:020:00:05

One in four of us regularly give up our time to help others,

0:00:050:00:08

putting something back into the community.

0:00:080:00:11

I want to tap into that spirit to make good things happen.

0:00:140:00:18

I'm on a mission to discover the positive effects of volunteering,

0:00:200:00:24

from the volunteers themselves

0:00:240:00:26

to the individuals and the communities that they help.

0:00:260:00:29

Every day people donate their time, expertise,

0:00:310:00:35

imagination and elbow grease for others.

0:00:350:00:38

They are in need of carpenters and volunteers,

0:00:380:00:41

so I just grabbed my tools and came down for the afternoon.

0:00:410:00:44

I never thought, at the end of my life, I'd be helping others.

0:00:440:00:49

I think volunteering is the lifeblood of what it is to be human.

0:00:490:00:53

-Yes!

-It's modest, ordinary people who are making such an amazing difference to peoples' lives.

0:00:530:01:00

The world to me is a beautiful place now.

0:01:000:01:03

It's 360 degrees from where I've come from.

0:01:030:01:06

I'm better than what I was. I couldn't do this a year ago.

0:01:080:01:11

My team is exploring inspiring schemes throughout the UK...

0:01:110:01:17

and tackling projects of our own.

0:01:170:01:19

This is about communities at their best.

0:01:210:01:24

People giving to help others.

0:01:240:01:27

This is about the incredible things we can achieve together.

0:01:270:01:31

This is Operation People Power.

0:01:310:01:33

I'm in Easton, an area of inner-city Bristol.

0:01:390:01:43

Like many places in the UK, it has mixed fortunes.

0:01:440:01:49

It also has a loud heartbeat from locals just like you,

0:01:490:01:53

with a wealth of skills and generosity of spirit,

0:01:530:01:56

willing to go the extra mile to make their community a better place

0:01:560:02:00

for all who live there.

0:02:000:02:02

no-one exemplifies this more than Bruce,

0:02:020:02:06

who runs a community centre called Baggator.

0:02:060:02:09

-Hello, there.

-Hello, Dave, nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:02:090:02:12

This is some place you've got here.

0:02:120:02:15

Baggator is a successful youth club and local meeting place for all.

0:02:150:02:20

With other community spaces under threat due to the need for offices

0:02:210:02:25

and housing, Bruce wants Baggator to grow

0:02:250:02:29

and provide vital resources in the neighbourhood.

0:02:290:02:32

Basically, anything the community needs, we will get involved.

0:02:320:02:35

All communities need a centre and when you are in a poor area,

0:02:350:02:39

as we are here, that centre becomes more valuable and more needed.

0:02:390:02:43

People rely on this to get outside the house

0:02:430:02:46

and create the community and be part of the community they live in.

0:02:460:02:51

It's taken the weight of everyday life

0:02:510:02:53

and giving them somewhere where they can be friends with each other.

0:02:530:02:57

'My mission, to help Bruce achieve his goal, has really inspired me.

0:02:580:03:03

'You know, I'm taking away so much from this project.'

0:03:040:03:07

It's reinforced my faith in human nature.

0:03:070:03:10

The thing is, without volunteers,

0:03:100:03:12

so much of our society these days would crumble.

0:03:120:03:14

There are so many amazing projects throughout Britain that need help,

0:03:150:03:19

they need volunteers.

0:03:190:03:22

Gosh, you can make a difference.

0:03:220:03:24

The other projects we have completed in Easton proved just that.

0:03:240:03:28

All made possible by my brilliant team.

0:03:290:03:32

Nicki Chapman, who's been using her motivational skills

0:03:330:03:36

and charm to great effect.

0:03:360:03:38

Martyn Ashton, seeking inspiration from the brilliant things people

0:03:420:03:46

like you do across the country to enhance the lives of others.

0:03:460:03:49

Juliet Sargeant not only provides artistic flair

0:03:510:03:54

as an award-winning garden designer,

0:03:540:03:56

but she's also a psychologist who understands why these

0:03:560:04:00

projects are so important.

0:04:000:04:02

And Mark Millar, a genius builder who always asks the right questions.

0:04:020:04:07

-How long have we got?

-A few days.

-And we've got no money?

0:04:070:04:12

No, but that's the purpose. It's community.

0:04:130:04:15

It's all for one, one for all.

0:04:150:04:17

And an army of locals willing to give for others.

0:04:180:04:22

This has all been created through volunteers.

0:04:220:04:25

-Yes.

-Through the love of the community.

0:04:250:04:26

-Yeah.

-Creating this for the community. I think that's magic.

0:04:260:04:31

So far, we have already surprised

0:04:310:04:34

Bruce by transforming the garden at Baggator...

0:04:340:04:37

-How do you do it so quickly?

-Volunteers, mate!

0:04:370:04:40

..but we haven't stopped there.

0:04:410:04:43

What Bruce doesn't know is that the local army has kept going.

0:04:430:04:48

People will just help. When you need it, they are there.

0:04:480:04:51

That's people power.

0:04:520:04:54

We're nearing the end of our project here at Baggator in Easton.

0:04:540:04:58

It might still look like a building site,

0:04:580:05:01

but thanks to the time and effort that our helpful heroes

0:05:010:05:04

are putting in, it's well on the way to becoming that inviting community

0:05:040:05:08

hub that Bruce has been working towards.

0:05:080:05:11

There's still a lot to do.

0:05:130:05:14

There's work to start on the inside of Baggator.

0:05:160:05:19

We've got to start getting walls put up there, door frames in,

0:05:190:05:22

some of the plastering sorted out.

0:05:220:05:25

It's about local volunteers, getting in here and sorting these projects out.

0:05:250:05:29

Nobody said it was going to be easy...

0:05:290:05:31

..did they, Dave?

0:05:320:05:33

He's right there. I never said it would be easy.

0:05:350:05:38

But it's going to be a lot easier with these cheerful helpers.

0:05:390:05:43

-So where are youse lot from?

-ALL: The University of Bristol!

0:05:440:05:47

THEY CHEER

0:05:470:05:49

I'm going to hand youse all over to Simon in a minute.

0:05:490:05:51

-We'll go and find some tools.

-Let me check those hands out.

0:05:510:05:55

See how clean they are now? I want to check them all at the end of the day.

0:05:550:05:58

Get in there and on with some work. You've got to get this finished by tonight.

0:05:580:06:01

-Yeah. Excellent.

-Things look like they're going well at Baggator.

0:06:010:06:06

And now Mark has his army of helpers,

0:06:060:06:08

he can turn his attention to the inside.

0:06:080:06:11

Everyone has given it their all.

0:06:130:06:16

And, as ever, Rob, who's been volunteering with us from the start

0:06:160:06:19

is playing a key role in the build.

0:06:190:06:22

He's given this so much energy and commitment.

0:06:220:06:25

It typifies the spirit of volunteering in Britain.

0:06:250:06:29

But I've been told he's burning the midnight oil.

0:06:300:06:33

So, I left one job last night and I drove past here and I noticed the lights were on.

0:06:330:06:37

-Yeah, we got out of here at nine.

-Flipping heck.

-Yeah.

0:06:370:06:39

Straight home to bed, straight back in this morning.

0:06:390:06:42

-We're definitely mob handed today.

-Yeah. There's about 40 people here.

0:06:420:06:45

What I love about it is, everyone's coming from different walks of life

0:06:450:06:48

as well, you know? You've got the college guys out there,

0:06:480:06:50

we've just got some people down there, a law student that's come in.

0:06:500:06:54

We talk about Bruce who is running it and stuff, but really...

0:06:540:06:57

..we're giving this back to the community.

0:06:580:07:00

Yeah. Absolutely. And I mean, that is Bruce. Bruce is the community.

0:07:000:07:03

I mean, he gives it his all.

0:07:030:07:05

Rob, like everyone here,

0:07:060:07:08

has bought into the vision that Bruce has for the project.

0:07:080:07:11

When I first came down and met Bruce,

0:07:140:07:17

I was going to be able to give a day or two.

0:07:170:07:19

But after meeting the guy and seeing how community spirited he was and

0:07:190:07:22

what he does, I thought, "Take the week off work, you know?"

0:07:220:07:26

-So, all good.

-AS CILLA:

-Surprise, surprise, Brucey Boy!

0:07:260:07:29

Rob has gone above and beyond,

0:07:320:07:35

but none of this would have been possible without lots of people

0:07:350:07:38

giving a bit of time to achieve things in a few days

0:07:380:07:41

that would have taken Bruce years.

0:07:410:07:44

Why would you want to give your weekend up to do something like this?

0:07:440:07:47

I just think that community projects like this are brilliant

0:07:470:07:50

and they're really worthwhile and they benefit a lot of people.

0:07:500:07:53

They're fun to be involved in.

0:07:530:07:55

And, you know, if people like us don't do it,

0:07:550:08:00

then is it going to happen?

0:08:000:08:02

-Staying till the finish?

-Yeah, definitely.

-Yeah?

-Yeah, of course.

0:08:020:08:06

Decorators, architects, students, postmen and plumbers.

0:08:060:08:11

They're all here, doing their bit.

0:08:110:08:14

-You're a local man, aren't you?

-I am, yeah.

0:08:140:08:16

-So you wanted to put something back into your community?

-Yeah, yeah, definitely.

0:08:160:08:19

-Important to have places like this for local people to come and enjoy themselves, so...

-Yeah.

0:08:190:08:25

It feels good to be helping improve it.

0:08:250:08:27

We've not long until we need to hand this place back to Bruce and the community.

0:08:310:08:35

And there's still loads to do.

0:08:350:08:38

What we need, at this stage of the job,

0:08:400:08:42

is a bit of a Superman on board.

0:08:420:08:44

-Wey!

-Hey! Hey!

0:08:440:08:46

Our volunteers are from completely different backgrounds,

0:08:490:08:53

but they all share one thing - generosity.

0:08:530:08:56

What I'm realising is it's just the tip of the iceberg.

0:08:570:09:00

All across the UK, people do incredible and inspirational things

0:09:030:09:08

to enhance our communities and the lives of others.

0:09:080:09:11

Martyn Ashton has been visiting some of them to bring that inspiration back here to Bristol.

0:09:140:09:20

He's seen the pleasure that animals can bring

0:09:220:09:25

to both the older and younger generations...

0:09:250:09:28

It seems to me that if you can encourage or invite

0:09:280:09:31

and allow people to connect with nature, you know,

0:09:310:09:34

it can open doors and it can be very therapeutic, really.

0:09:340:09:39

Yeah, absolutely.

0:09:390:09:41

..experienced the life enhancing joy

0:09:410:09:43

that a feeling of freedom can give you.

0:09:430:09:46

Bryn, walk on.

0:09:460:09:48

So you've got a bit of personal freedom?

0:09:480:09:50

Yeah, it does make you think, doesn't it?

0:09:500:09:52

You know, I just did something I've never done in my life before,

0:09:520:09:56

because someone volunteered to help.

0:09:560:09:59

I'd found out about the great work being done by volunteers

0:09:590:10:03

who are giving their time to help ex-offenders back into employment.

0:10:030:10:07

-Do they have a lot of faith in people?

-Definitely, definitely.

0:10:080:10:12

And I think they've really found something that they had to do,

0:10:120:10:15

and they devote all this time to making it happen.

0:10:150:10:18

Now, Martyn's heading to Cornwall,

0:10:250:10:27

visiting a music-based youth project called Livewire.

0:10:270:10:31

It's a place where kids and teenagers can learn an instrument

0:10:320:10:36

and practice or play live to an audience.

0:10:360:10:39

But the volunteers here provide so much more.

0:10:390:10:42

Livewire is run by Andy.

0:10:440:10:47

The simple truth is, without the volunteers,

0:10:470:10:50

this place wouldn't be open.

0:10:500:10:53

Andy coordinates a team of volunteer youth workers who help the dozens

0:10:530:10:57

of young people coming through the door every night.

0:10:570:11:00

There's more and more young people who are vulnerable,

0:11:020:11:05

that have got mental health issues, who self harm,

0:11:050:11:08

who have eating disorders,

0:11:080:11:10

but there's less people or organisations

0:11:100:11:13

offering support to them.

0:11:130:11:14

Over to the left, yeah?

0:11:140:11:16

So, the youth work team here work with, you know,

0:11:160:11:20

what comes through the door.

0:11:200:11:22

This is Nicole.

0:11:250:11:26

She was introduced to Livewire when she was 16.

0:11:260:11:29

She was suffering from severe depression and anxiety,

0:11:310:11:35

affecting every aspect of her life.

0:11:350:11:37

So, when did you start coming here?

0:11:390:11:41

I started coming here just under three years ago.

0:11:410:11:44

My youth worker who I had at the time just kind of brought me down

0:11:440:11:47

and she wanted me to try and get some social interaction with people my own age,

0:11:470:11:51

because that was something I really struggled with.

0:11:510:11:54

And so I came down for about half an hour on the first night

0:11:540:11:57

and was like,

0:11:570:11:58

"Oh, I've had enough now, this is scary, I want to go."

0:11:580:12:01

But, no, I actually...

0:12:010:12:04

Although I was terrified of the fact I was surrounded by people...

0:12:040:12:08

I actually did enjoy the little guitar lesson that I had,

0:12:080:12:11

that they put me in, so I ended up coming down the next week with her

0:12:110:12:14

and so the youth workers here basically helped me.

0:12:140:12:17

So instead of going, "Oh, you've got this wrong with you

0:12:170:12:20

"and you need to deal with it in this way

0:12:200:12:22

"and you have to have this many therapy sessions," and stuff which,

0:12:220:12:24

obviously, you hate when you're in that position,

0:12:240:12:27

they go, "Oh, so, OK, what's wrong? It's fine, you can cry,

0:12:270:12:30

"it doesn't matter, we're not going to judge you.

0:12:300:12:32

"And here, you can play a guitar and cheer yourself up afterwards and you

0:12:320:12:35

"can have fun with your friends and not have to worry about stuff whilst you're here."

0:12:350:12:40

For Nicole, Livewire gave her a new sense of direction in her life

0:12:410:12:46

and the confidence and skills to back it up.

0:12:460:12:49

I started playing regularly,

0:12:490:12:52

getting involved with the general activities that went on,

0:12:520:12:55

I started making new friends,

0:12:550:12:58

which was a really big thing for me at the time.

0:12:580:13:01

My mental health improved, like, dramatically, quite quickly.

0:13:010:13:04

Sounds like quite a transformation.

0:13:040:13:07

I was taken... Well, gradually,

0:13:070:13:09

I was taken off medication and therapy and things like that,

0:13:090:13:13

and I really started to see an improvement just in my general life

0:13:130:13:17

and was just happier and really enjoying things

0:13:170:13:19

like a normal teenager, which was just amazing.

0:13:190:13:23

So, I know you're actually performing tonight.

0:13:230:13:25

-Yes.

-So we'd better get in there.

0:13:250:13:27

-Yes, we'd better head in and set the guitar up.

-Yeah, let's go.

0:13:270:13:31

APPLAUSE

0:13:310:13:33

# You kept all the things I threw away

0:13:450:13:51

# A leaf I picked... #

0:13:530:13:56

This place really goes to show that organisations like this that rely on

0:13:560:14:01

volunteers really do make a huge difference to people's lives.

0:14:010:14:06

For me, it's life-changing,

0:14:090:14:12

to see a young person on the stage for the first time,

0:14:120:14:15

performing in front of an audience, you know,

0:14:150:14:18

that blows me away every time.

0:14:180:14:21

But it's those things that make you passionate about what you do.

0:14:210:14:25

# Maybe I wanted you to change

0:14:250:14:30

# Maybe I'm the one to blame... #

0:14:300:14:33

If I think that Nicole two and a half years ago

0:14:330:14:36

and I think of her now, they are a million miles apart.

0:14:360:14:39

They are not the same person.

0:14:390:14:41

# I was full of doubt and you believed... #

0:14:430:14:46

I know for myself, obviously, with problems,

0:14:460:14:49

and with a lot of the friends I have and people that I know

0:14:490:14:52

that come here, Livewire really does genuinely save lives.

0:14:520:14:56

We are not just a general youth project.

0:14:570:14:59

We are using music as a really good healing tool and a way to make friends.

0:14:590:15:04

I don't know what I would have done without this place, to be honest.

0:15:060:15:11

# Maybe I'm the one to blame. #

0:15:110:15:16

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:160:15:18

This place is amazing.

0:15:230:15:24

On the surface, it's all about music, listening, playing, enjoying.

0:15:240:15:28

But underneath, it's about creating a safe,

0:15:280:15:31

interesting and an exciting space to engage with young people.

0:15:310:15:35

And that is making a big difference to these guys' lives.

0:15:350:15:38

'Giving direction and hope to our young people is vital to all our futures.

0:15:420:15:47

'Projects like Livewire and Baggator show just how crucial that work is.'

0:15:470:15:52

Juliet has been helping me to get an insight into why.

0:15:530:15:56

It's such a pivotal time.

0:15:560:15:58

But what is it that helps a young person gain direction?

0:15:580:16:03

Well, none of us likes to be told what to do with a wagging finger

0:16:030:16:08

and I think young people, just like any of us, really,

0:16:080:16:13

are best guided within a positive relationship,

0:16:130:16:17

so to be able to come alongside young people and develop positive

0:16:170:16:22

relationships and just gently guide them...

0:16:220:16:25

..is a great thing to be able to do.

0:16:260:16:28

And then of course, role models.

0:16:280:16:30

The thing about role models is,

0:16:300:16:32

it could be somebody that you know personally,

0:16:320:16:35

but also could be somebody that you see on the television or in the newspaper.

0:16:350:16:39

And what a role model does is gives you a vision of the person you might want to be.

0:16:390:16:46

-So you're able to imagine the person that you want to become and step towards that future.

-Yes, yeah.

0:16:460:16:53

Role models don't set out to be mentors for others,

0:17:000:17:04

they earn that right.

0:17:040:17:06

Less than a mile and-a-half across town from Baggator is Saint Pauls,

0:17:060:17:10

an area with its fair share of inner-city problems.

0:17:100:17:13

Thankfully, there's another great project there, providing a safe,

0:17:160:17:20

supportive, fun place for young people,

0:17:200:17:23

with inspiring volunteers at its core.

0:17:230:17:26

Welcome to the most notorious area in Bristol,

0:17:280:17:30

supposedly, Saint Pauls.

0:17:300:17:32

This is where I grew up. This is where I called home.

0:17:320:17:35

And I still call it home.

0:17:350:17:37

Bulldog!

0:17:370:17:39

Chris is a volunteer youth worker at Full Circle,

0:17:390:17:43

a community centre that sees hundreds of local kids

0:17:430:17:46

and their families come through their doors every week.

0:17:460:17:49

OK, you lot are too fast for me. You lot are too fast for me.

0:17:490:17:53

Afternoon, evening and holiday clubs here are run by specialist

0:17:530:17:57

play workers, all giving their time for free.

0:17:570:18:00

Draw a picture of something that reminds you of Full Circle

0:18:000:18:05

or Saint Pauls.

0:18:050:18:07

For Chris, as with many of those who get involved and help here,

0:18:070:18:11

Full Circle has been part of their lives for many years.

0:18:110:18:15

I think, as a child growing up,

0:18:150:18:17

-it was a place of safety for many of us.

-Yes.

0:18:170:18:19

We had a chance to socialise in a safe environment

0:18:190:18:23

and also learn and thrive in that environment as well.

0:18:230:18:26

-Full Circle became an alternative, family of many of us.

-Yeah.

0:18:260:18:29

You know, where we had issues at home, or maybe in school,

0:18:290:18:32

or even in the wider community, as children,

0:18:320:18:35

we knew that when we were in Full Circle, we were safe.

0:18:350:18:37

-Yes.

-And we knew that everyone there was there to help us, as children.

0:18:370:18:41

Yeah.

0:18:410:18:43

These days, the level of support Chris and his fellow volunteers

0:18:430:18:46

can give to the kids of Saint Pauls makes a real difference

0:18:460:18:50

at a critical time of their lives.

0:18:500:18:52

What sort of risks are there for the kids on the street,

0:18:530:18:56

if you miss out on something like Full Circle?

0:18:560:18:58

The risk's so high. There's a lot of gang activity.

0:18:580:19:01

There is a lot of violent crime within these areas.

0:19:010:19:05

Without having Full Circle there to kind of...as a safety net, they'd be lost.

0:19:050:19:10

There's nothing else.

0:19:100:19:12

It's part of their everyday life, it's a part of their weekly routine.

0:19:120:19:15

-Yeah.

-They see us on the street, they see us as workers on the street

0:19:150:19:18

and they know they can approach us if they've got a problem or an issue.

0:19:180:19:22

Teenage years can be very stressful and what we're trying to do

0:19:220:19:24

at Full Circle right now is help young men,

0:19:240:19:26

help young women keep on the straight and narrow,

0:19:260:19:28

understand clearly what their options and choices are

0:19:280:19:31

-and then make the right ones.

-You know, Chris,

0:19:310:19:33

you must be a role model now to some of these youngsters.

0:19:330:19:36

How does that make you feel?

0:19:360:19:39

It gives me a sense of pride, definitely.

0:19:390:19:41

It gives me a sense of pride.

0:19:410:19:43

For example, I had a 17-year-old come up to me the other day

0:19:430:19:46

and thanked me because he said without me he wouldn't have decided to go into college after school.

0:19:460:19:51

Now, that sort of thing, when you hear that, that really warms the heart.

0:19:510:19:54

It makes you want to, you know...

0:19:540:19:56

It makes me want to do what I do some more, you know.

0:19:560:19:58

It's priceless. There's nothing... You can't put a price on that.

0:19:580:20:01

You can come and do whatever you like.

0:20:030:20:06

-A lot of people come here.

-It's fun.

0:20:060:20:09

It's a nice, fun, safe place.

0:20:120:20:14

There are many, many places in Britain, not just St Pauls,

0:20:190:20:22

where there are problems, you know, either with violence or poverty.

0:20:220:20:27

And it's hard for youngsters to get direction.

0:20:270:20:31

And the great thing about Chris is because he's grown up in this area,

0:20:310:20:35

he's grown up working through the project,

0:20:350:20:38

he's the most perfect role model for some of these youngsters round here.

0:20:380:20:43

He's been there, he's seen it, he's done it, he's got the T-shirt.

0:20:430:20:46

His core values were set here within Full Circle.

0:20:460:20:50

The guys at Full Circle are doing an incredible job.

0:20:510:20:55

They've created a beacon for the local kids and they do wonders with very little funding.

0:20:550:21:01

And it's popular, they are running at full capacity...

0:21:010:21:04

..but as Chris tells me, there's always room for improvement.

0:21:050:21:09

It's a cracking building.

0:21:090:21:11

In a practical way, what do you think we could do?

0:21:110:21:14

I think that the kids could benefit from a room

0:21:140:21:16

where they could chill out and watch movies or do something

0:21:160:21:19

along those lines because we don't have that

0:21:190:21:21

-and that's something that we did have back in the day.

-Right.

0:21:210:21:23

Back in the '80s we would have a movie night where all the kids

0:21:230:21:26

would come together and we'd watch movies together and that.

0:21:260:21:29

That essence of the club has actually gone,

0:21:290:21:32

so I would like to see that be returned, definitely.

0:21:320:21:34

I've spotted one dark and dingy room that isn't being used at all

0:21:360:21:41

and could be just perfect as a chill out space for the youngsters.

0:21:410:21:45

I know we're really busy at Baggator,

0:21:470:21:49

but small changes can make a big difference.

0:21:490:21:53

Thankfully, I have a secret weapon.

0:21:530:21:55

Nicki has worked tirelessly recruiting volunteers

0:22:000:22:02

for all our projects.

0:22:020:22:04

-Have you ever volunteered for anything?

-She's taken to the airwaves...

0:22:040:22:07

We're looking for volunteers over the next few days,

0:22:070:22:10

the next few weeks and hopefully we're going to make a huge,

0:22:100:22:13

huge difference.

0:22:130:22:16

..talked to companies who encouraged

0:22:160:22:18

staff to give back to the community...

0:22:180:22:20

-We are desperate for volunteers.

-I'll get on the phone now.

0:22:200:22:23

That would be amazing.

0:22:230:22:25

Doesn't matter what they do, where they come from,

0:22:250:22:27

all skills are accepted.

0:22:270:22:29

..met people who already volunteer...

0:22:290:22:31

You sound like the perfect team to recruit, if I can, on a volunteer basis.

0:22:310:22:36

..and frankly stopped everyone she's met to see if they can spare a few hours to help.

0:22:360:22:41

Hello, can I stop you for a couple of minutes?

0:22:410:22:43

-Yeah, no worries.

-She's not failed us yet...

0:22:430:22:46

Here we go, where it's all going to happen.

0:22:460:22:48

..and like the Pied Piper of St Pauls, here she comes!

0:22:480:22:52

In a small room like this a handful

0:22:590:23:02

of willing painters can work wonders in no time.

0:23:020:23:05

I can't believe how quickly this room is being transformed.

0:23:050:23:08

It's amazing. The amount of work that's happened

0:23:080:23:11

and the amount that's, you know, been done in the past hour,

0:23:110:23:14

just itself has been amazing.

0:23:140:23:16

What do you think of the colours?

0:23:160:23:17

I like it. I'm a big fan of grey, and the yellow, a big fan of yellow.

0:23:170:23:21

So I think it'll look really, really good when it's all done.

0:23:210:23:25

It's already getting there, isn't it? This is just the first stage.

0:23:250:23:28

Giving this room a simple makeover might be a small job in the grand scheme of things...

0:23:290:23:35

..but for Judith, who is a director at the project,

0:23:370:23:40

any improvements help to create a legacy for the people of St Pauls,

0:23:400:23:45

providing the support a healthy community needs.

0:23:450:23:49

So, Judith, how long have you been involved in the project?

0:23:490:23:52

I've been involved with Full Circle for on and off 20 years.

0:23:520:23:55

I've stopped counting because I just know I'm going to be here forever.

0:23:550:23:59

-It's that sort of place?

-For me it is.

0:23:590:24:03

It's helped nourish me and grow me as a person

0:24:030:24:05

as well as what I've been able to give back to the community

0:24:050:24:09

-and especially to the young people.

-Yeah.

-I'm very lucky.

0:24:090:24:12

So how important, within the community, is the project?

0:24:120:24:15

I think we're the lifeblood and in some ways that's really nice,

0:24:150:24:20

but in some ways that's kind of unacceptable

0:24:200:24:22

in the world we're living in at the moment.

0:24:220:24:24

To think...

0:24:240:24:26

..what would happen without us a little bit, it's not bearable.

0:24:280:24:31

So how big a part in this do volunteers play?

0:24:310:24:34

At one time Full Circle was a charity that had, well,

0:24:340:24:37

one member of staff, then it went to 17, then it went back to one.

0:24:370:24:41

Without the volunteers we wouldn't even be here.

0:24:420:24:46

Judith knows that volunteers like

0:24:460:24:48

Chris are vital to the project's future.

0:24:480:24:51

It's because of Chris's first-hand experience of growing up around here

0:24:530:24:57

that makes him the perfect person to go out there and convince young,

0:24:570:25:02

vulnerable people to abandon the streets and come to the project.

0:25:020:25:07

We go out there and we try to find children that look like

0:25:070:25:09

they're a bit displaced or maybe even entering gang life.

0:25:090:25:14

We try to steer them into coming into the club,

0:25:140:25:17

so we tell them about the all the activities.

0:25:170:25:19

We come alongside them, introduce ourselves to their family...

0:25:190:25:22

..to try our best at giving them a better opportunity

0:25:230:25:26

of becoming a part of our Full Circle family.

0:25:260:25:29

We've given them that structure of where they can have fun.

0:25:310:25:35

We found out that they were less interested in being on the streets

0:25:350:25:39

and less interested in getting themselves in trouble.

0:25:390:25:42

And by being part of the family,

0:25:440:25:46

they get an opportunity to learn new skills,

0:25:460:25:49

make friends and interact with role models like Chris,

0:25:490:25:53

who show how they can be a positive member of the community.

0:25:530:25:57

And without these facilities,

0:25:570:25:59

some of the young people could end up hanging around the streets.

0:25:590:26:04

It's simply not having anywhere to go and that can lead

0:26:040:26:08

to all type of dangers and risks to young people.

0:26:080:26:11

Today, Full Circle works with young people from the age of five to 25

0:26:130:26:18

and it's because of the generosity of volunteers like Chris

0:26:180:26:22

that so many vulnerable young people have turned their lives around.

0:26:220:26:25

We like to usher them in out of the cold into the warmth of Full Circle.

0:26:270:26:32

We've got two projects on the go in two separate parts of the city.

0:26:400:26:45

One big, one small,

0:26:470:26:49

but both harnessing that amazing resource that is people power.

0:26:490:26:53

At Baggator Community Centre our volunteering heroes and heroines

0:26:560:27:00

are working all hours to get this place ready to hand back

0:27:000:27:03

to Bruce and the people of Easton,

0:27:030:27:06

and this is our very last day to get it done.

0:27:060:27:09

Mark has been a powerhouse on this mission.

0:27:140:27:17

No job has been too big or too small for him to rise to the challenge.

0:27:190:27:23

He has put his heart and soul and muscle power

0:27:250:27:28

into every task and led by example from the front...

0:27:280:27:31

Thank you very much. Youse look amazing.

0:27:310:27:33

..making sure every volunteer had an impact.

0:27:330:27:36

We need to get loads of coverage.

0:27:360:27:38

But now with the hours counting down,

0:27:380:27:41

it seems the pressure of the two remaining tasks

0:27:410:27:44

have given way to some retail therapy.

0:27:440:27:47

Oh, I just hope he gets a move on!

0:27:470:27:49

We need to get quite a lot of paint on board.

0:27:490:27:53

The ones that we suggested were these ones up here.

0:27:530:27:57

-Right, OK.

-The latest LED.

-OK.

0:27:570:27:59

Mark, don't forget we're up against it!

0:27:590:28:02

Something like that would be perfect.

0:28:040:28:06

Is it comfortable?

0:28:060:28:08

Mark, you got the memo, right? What did it say?

0:28:090:28:13

Stop messing around, we've got to paint Baggator.

0:28:140:28:17

I tell you what, Mark, we need the paint,

0:28:170:28:19

but we'll leave the painting to the experts.

0:28:190:28:22

Our incredible local artists don't need any help

0:28:230:28:26

with their creation on the outside of Baggator.

0:28:260:28:29

But they could do with a brew.

0:28:300:28:32

Ollie and Andy, you are two thirds of this magnificent trio.

0:28:320:28:36

Why did the three of you decide to get involved with this project?

0:28:360:28:39

Because you're giving up your time, you know. This is your art.

0:28:390:28:44

I think it's great to be part of a positive thing.

0:28:440:28:46

Everyone's working hard in there.

0:28:460:28:48

To transform this building into a big difference, that's what I enjoy.

0:28:480:28:52

Yeah, lovely. Guys, thank you. I'll leave you to it.

0:28:520:28:55

-Thanks very much.

-Shout if you want more tea.

-OK.

0:28:550:28:58

It's not just the outside that's getting an artistic makeover.

0:28:590:29:03

Inside local artist DK is also creating a brilliant new mural and,

0:29:030:29:09

like everybody else, giving his time for free.

0:29:090:29:12

It's been incredible. Inside Baggator we've decorated the whole place out...

0:29:160:29:20

..put a bit of life back into the stage area,

0:29:210:29:24

we've got a storage unit here.

0:29:240:29:25

It's all been done with blackboard paint so they can put notes up there,

0:29:250:29:29

messages to people, tell people what's in the different cupboards.

0:29:290:29:32

We've redone all the toilets.

0:29:320:29:34

We've put in disability access into the toilets over here,

0:29:340:29:37

where Rob is now, made all the doors wider so we can get anybody with

0:29:370:29:41

wheelchairs or pushchairs, even, can go through that way,

0:29:410:29:45

and we still leave access to the fire escape out there.

0:29:450:29:48

In the kitchen area, we've put new ceilings in there.

0:29:480:29:51

We've put a new ceiling all the way through.

0:29:510:29:53

And all the furniture's going to be set in properly

0:29:530:29:56

and fixed to the walls so everything's working properly.

0:29:560:29:59

And we're doing a massive clean-up,

0:29:590:30:01

handing this back so that the kitchen and the whole area is working...

0:30:010:30:04

..for ballroom dancing and bingo.

0:30:050:30:07

The inside space really is taking shape,

0:30:100:30:13

and I'm loving the bespoke artwork on the walls.

0:30:130:30:17

It's very fitting for the public art-loving city of Bristol.

0:30:170:30:20

Nicki has been in contact with another local artist, Ollie,

0:30:230:30:26

who uses calligraphy as a form of expression to put across simple messages.

0:30:260:30:33

He has offered to paint some words on the wall of Full Circle in nearby St Pauls.

0:30:330:30:38

But we're running late and, before he can start,

0:30:380:30:42

we have some heavy-duty rewiring to do.

0:30:420:30:44

Thankfully, Paul has volunteered

0:30:450:30:47

with his expertise to fit the new lights.

0:30:470:30:49

So, we've got a little bit of a challenge on our hands here

0:30:510:30:53

cos we've only got eight hours to turn this room round.

0:30:530:30:56

-OK.

-The first problem is that light is terrible, OK?

0:30:560:31:00

Because what we want to do with this

0:31:000:31:02

room is we want to try and make it a much softer, gentler space.

0:31:020:31:05

So could you possibly get this lighting changed in here?

0:31:050:31:09

Yeah, no problem.

0:31:090:31:11

The good news is that Paul's wasting no time in getting new lights in.

0:31:150:31:20

But there's a problem.

0:31:210:31:23

Our graffiti artist is nowhere to be found.

0:31:240:31:27

I tell you what, Dave, if he doesn't turn up,

0:31:290:31:31

you'd better get your crayons out.

0:31:310:31:34

No-one wants that, Mark.

0:31:340:31:36

It's time to think on our feet.

0:31:370:31:39

Right, I'm going to have to speak to Nicki.

0:31:400:31:43

Hopefully she's on the phone.

0:31:430:31:46

-MOBILE PHONE

-Hello?

-Hi, Nicki, it's Mark.

0:31:460:31:48

-Hey. Hi, Mark. How are you?

-I was very well, to tell you the truth, Nicki. Things were going well.

0:31:480:31:53

-Go on.

-The graffiti artist isn't here.

0:31:530:31:56

-Oh, no!

-No, he's not!

0:31:560:31:58

Hold on! He's just walked down the road!

0:31:580:32:00

-Has he literally just turned up?

-Oh, my God! Out of nowhere.

0:32:000:32:04

-Look, look! He's here!

-How are you doing?

-Top man, top man.

0:32:040:32:08

-Right, Nicki, I've got to go, got to go.

-Brilliant.

-Bye.

-OK.

0:32:080:32:10

-I'll see you later. Bye.

-Man, I'm so glad to see you.

0:32:100:32:13

Oh, my God. It's brilliant. I was in total meltdown there.

0:32:130:32:17

Now, that is a result.

0:32:180:32:20

A collective sigh of relief all round.

0:32:200:32:23

Ollie, talk me through what you've got here because, in my head,

0:32:230:32:26

graffitiing on a wall is coming in with like cans and brushes

0:32:260:32:30

and just firing the whole thing over there and standing back

0:32:300:32:32

and having loads of fun, but it's obviously a bit more methodical than that, isn't it?

0:32:320:32:36

Yeah, because this is based on calligraphy,

0:32:360:32:38

it's sort of scaling up what I've drawn

0:32:380:32:40

-and then just using a brush instead of a pen.

-Right.

0:32:400:32:43

So it's not just chuck it on then.

0:32:430:32:45

No, no, because then it ends up like not in the centre or something.

0:32:450:32:48

(It's great.)

0:33:020:33:03

I think this room is really starting to come together.

0:33:050:33:08

Go on, Charmaine. You break.

0:33:090:33:12

'So, while the experts do what they do best...

0:33:120:33:14

'..volunteer youth worker Charmaine and I have a natter.'

0:33:160:33:19

So, Charmaine, what does Full Circle mean to you?

0:33:190:33:22

To me, it means community, it means family.

0:33:220:33:24

-It's like an extended family.

-Yeah.

-You know what I mean?

0:33:240:33:26

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and now I have a child who comes here,

0:33:260:33:31

so it feels very generational. All the families know each other.

0:33:310:33:35

-So what sort of things did you do?

-We used to have girls club.

0:33:370:33:41

We had trips to the cinemas. We used to do crafts.

0:33:410:33:45

Anything you could think of that a child likes doing,

0:33:450:33:47

we used to do it with Full Circle, especially the camps.

0:33:470:33:50

I think they were most famous for their camps back in the day,

0:33:500:33:53

when every summer we used to go on two or three trips.

0:33:530:33:56

It allowed me to do things like fundraising - so,

0:33:560:33:59

when we wanted to go on a trip to Alton Towers or something like that,

0:33:590:34:02

they would say, "All right, you lot want to go on a trip,

0:34:020:34:05

"how are you going to raise the money?"

0:34:050:34:07

So we used to have to use our minds and think of ways to raise some funds and, a lot of the times,

0:34:070:34:11

we used to raise enough money to get a coach to take us on a day trip

0:34:110:34:15

somewhere, and that gave me confidence to know that,

0:34:150:34:18

"All right, Char..."

0:34:180:34:21

Like, I was, what? 12, 13 when I was doing stuff like that?

0:34:210:34:23

So today I'm very entrepreneurial, so it's definitely encouraged me.

0:34:230:34:27

Yes.

0:34:270:34:30

If Full Circle wasn't here...

0:34:300:34:32

..what would the teenagers do?

0:34:330:34:36

I can't even imagine the area without Full Circle, to be honest.

0:34:360:34:39

There's not many services for the young people in this area.

0:34:390:34:42

To be honest, Full Circle provides the only service for teenagers in St Pauls.

0:34:420:34:46

If they ain't got productive activities to do,

0:34:460:34:49

there's only one other path that they often take,

0:34:490:34:51

so in order to try and keep our young people

0:34:510:34:54

on the straight and narrow, we need to have places like this

0:34:540:34:57

that provide positive activities for them to take part in.

0:34:570:35:00

And, as Ollie paints his words of wisdom on the wall,

0:35:020:35:06

Mark and John add the finishing touches to the room.

0:35:060:35:09

The young 'uns are keen on seeing the new space.

0:35:120:35:15

I'm guessing that's like... Is that like an Olympic torch almost, do you reckon?

0:35:200:35:24

Well, you see, that's the thing about art. Art's subjective, you know? You can sort of...

0:35:240:35:27

What is it for you?

0:35:270:35:30

I don't know what it is, but it looks like it goes that way.

0:35:300:35:33

Right, what else have we got? We'll put some games out, and beanbags.

0:35:340:35:37

Let's get it hoovered up.

0:35:370:35:38

And it's done.

0:35:420:35:44

From a dark and dingy abandoned space to this -

0:35:470:35:51

a room that will really add something to the Full Circle project,

0:35:510:35:55

somewhere for the youngsters to just chill out.

0:35:550:35:58

Not that I think there will be too much relaxing in there today.

0:35:590:36:02

-Hey, can we go in now?

-KIDS: Yeah!

0:36:020:36:05

Right, I'm going in. Hold on.

0:36:050:36:07

THEY SCREAM

0:36:080:36:10

This is what it's about.

0:36:140:36:16

So we get the kids in here, so they can have fun.

0:36:160:36:19

There you go!

0:36:190:36:20

It was all the volunteers as well.

0:36:200:36:23

Hey, that is amazing.

0:36:230:36:26

Hey, I did not expect a reaction like that.

0:36:260:36:30

No. They were really happy for the room.

0:36:300:36:32

It's nice for them to have a little bit of a quiet space where they can just come out.

0:36:320:36:36

They can just, you know, come and chill. That's nice. Thank you.

0:36:360:36:40

You're welcome. I tell you what, it's not me that you should thank. It's all these guys here.

0:36:400:36:44

Yeah, well done to all the volunteers who decorated this

0:36:440:36:46

wonderful room for the young people. It's really appreciated.

0:36:460:36:49

I hope you have lots of fun in here, because it's for you, all right?

0:36:510:36:55

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:36:550:36:57

So we want to say a huge thank you for...

0:36:590:37:03

MANY: People power!

0:37:030:37:05

THEY CHEER

0:37:060:37:08

Back over in Easton,

0:37:180:37:20

the folk at Baggator have finally finished their painting, too.

0:37:200:37:23

There's less than an hour to go

0:37:240:37:27

before Bruce comes to see the result of everyone's hard work.

0:37:270:37:31

We've also invited back Grenville and some of his singing group,

0:37:350:37:39

including the ladies from the Malcolm X elders group,

0:37:390:37:42

to provide the entertainment.

0:37:420:37:44

I can't wait.

0:37:440:37:46

The whole point of my mission was to show just what you,

0:37:480:37:52

the British public, are capable of,

0:37:520:37:54

and to encourage more people to lend a hand and make a difference

0:37:540:37:58

where you live.

0:37:580:38:00

Nowhere has this been shown more than at Baggator.

0:38:020:38:07

Now it's time to show our work to Bruce and the

0:38:070:38:11

original founder, Pete.

0:38:110:38:13

I think it's about time we had a look at the outside, do you?

0:38:130:38:16

That would be great.

0:38:160:38:18

Oh!

0:38:190:38:21

Wow!

0:38:210:38:23

I would say that's brightened things up a bit.

0:38:230:38:25

You're not going to miss it now.

0:38:250:38:27

Gosh! That's wonderful.

0:38:270:38:29

I believe it gives the place such a great identity now.

0:38:310:38:34

-No more the hidden secret.

-No, no.

0:38:340:38:37

-I love it.

-Well, that's just the outside.

0:38:370:38:40

-Shall we have a look at the inside?

-Yes, please.

-Come on.

0:38:400:38:42

I love the cockatoos.

0:38:420:38:45

Local legend Bruce has given years to helping the community,

0:38:480:38:53

but now it's his turn to see what the locals have given back to him.

0:38:530:38:57

The inside was tired, with a nagging list of jobs

0:38:580:39:01

that prevented further work from being carried out.

0:39:010:39:05

Now it has a new lease of life and a bright future.

0:39:050:39:09

The hall has been revamped and provides a bright and creative space for groups to enjoy.

0:39:100:39:15

The once impractical and rundown disabled toilets have been completely refurbished.

0:39:170:39:23

The cafe has had a face-lift and is now modern and fresh.

0:39:250:39:29

We've given you a new ceiling up here, cos the old ceiling was completely gone.

0:39:310:39:35

-Brilliant.

-Fantastic.

-The computers are all nicely fitted in there for just like an internet cafe.

0:39:350:39:41

It's such a functional, great space.

0:39:410:39:43

-And now we can do some of the adult training courses on the computers as well, that we wanted to do.

-Yeah.

0:39:430:39:47

The volunteers have put their heart and soul into this place,

0:39:470:39:50

and obviously the clue is in the name. It's a community space.

0:39:500:39:53

-I think it's definitely got a great future with you behind it.

-Yeah, absolutely.

0:39:530:39:57

Outside, we have removed derelict buildings.

0:39:590:40:02

We've not only completely transformed the garden,

0:40:020:40:06

but we've also extended it with a new pergola and a fire pit.

0:40:060:40:11

-Da-dah!

-Here you go, guys.

0:40:130:40:14

-You coming out?

-Wow.

-Wow.

0:40:140:40:18

-This is...

-Keep coming round.

-Keep coming round this way.

0:40:180:40:20

Martyn and Nicki have had such a big hand in this.

0:40:200:40:24

Come and have a look at this.

0:40:240:40:26

The garden, for me, is stunning.

0:40:280:40:31

It's somewhere for adults to sit,

0:40:310:40:34

somewhere for children to play and it's clean and safe.

0:40:340:40:37

-It's one space now rather than blocks of areas.

-Yeah.

0:40:370:40:40

It's almost like you've added a bit on.

0:40:400:40:43

It's so much bigger. It's not only the extra space,

0:40:430:40:46

it's the quality of the space.

0:40:460:40:48

Everything now is so much more usable.

0:40:480:40:51

-Yes.

-And it's not a feeling of making do any more.

0:40:510:40:54

It's friendlier now, isn't it? Before, it was oppressive.

0:40:540:40:58

But, do you know, when I moved, first moved into this building,

0:40:580:41:01

I didn't even know that arch was there. It was so overgrown.

0:41:010:41:05

-Yeah.

-I'm looking forward to coming to work tomorrow.

0:41:050:41:08

It's going to be nice showing people round,

0:41:090:41:14

-showing them what they can do here.

-Yeah.

0:41:140:41:16

Helping the local community have their events, their celebrations,

0:41:160:41:18

running the programmes we love to run,

0:41:180:41:21

that Pete spent so much time starting off.

0:41:210:41:23

-Yes.

-It's just going to be so much easier. It's going to be a pleasure.

0:41:230:41:27

Altogether, more than 200 people have chipped in

0:41:290:41:33

to help all the projects we have tackled in Bristol.

0:41:330:41:37

Some gave a few hours. Others, days.

0:41:380:41:41

But the legacy of that work will live on for many,

0:41:410:41:44

many more years to come.

0:41:440:41:46

Not bad, is it?

0:41:460:41:48

You all know what it was like before.

0:41:500:41:53

To see it like this now is amazing. You are great people.

0:41:530:41:57

You feel like family. I just...

0:41:570:41:59

I don't know how to thank you all for doing everything you've done.

0:41:590:42:02

All I can say now is, when's the next party?

0:42:020:42:05

Sooner than you think, Bruce!

0:42:080:42:10

Buildings are just bricks and mortar,

0:42:130:42:16

but fill them up with people and you have a community.

0:42:160:42:19

A group of people who benefit from meeting each other,

0:42:210:42:25

stronger together than alone.

0:42:250:42:28

THEY SING "SCOTLAND THE BRAVE"

0:42:280:42:31

# Oompa, oompa, oompa-pa

0:42:320:42:35

# Oompa-pa, oompa-pa

0:42:350:42:36

# Oompa, oompa, oompa-pa

0:42:360:42:38

# Oompa, oom-pa-pa. #

0:42:380:42:41

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:410:42:43

It's absolute mayhem in there. It's pure joy.

0:42:490:42:52

It's good fun. And that is what this building was made for.

0:42:520:42:57

That's what you can do with volunteers - and that is people power.
