Given the financial mess Labour created, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
household budgets are under strain. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
So nobody wants to see their money wasted. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
Especially when it's by the people | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
who are supposed to be serving you and your community - | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
your local council. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
Under the last Labour government, council tax doubled, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
whilst Labour councils wasted money hand over fist, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
spending your money unchecked on full-time trade union officials | 0:00:31 | 0:00:36
and propaganda newspapers. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Labour councils also paid chief executives astronomical salaries. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
It's something that Conservatives in Government | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
could not allow to continue. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
We pledged to show you how councils spend your money | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
by making them open up their books. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
Only one council has failed to do this. It's a Labour one. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:59
We're also cracking down on those who want to pay | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
their chief executives absurd amounts. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Councils will have to vote on big pay packets, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
and consequently, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
chief executives are earning less than their predecessors. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
But we're doing more than just stopping your money | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
being splurged on excessive salaries. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
We are putting power in your hands, through a shake-up of local politics. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:24
Because this Government knows the best decisions | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
are not always made in Whitehall. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
We're not hoarding power in Government, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
but devolving it to local people. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
The mess Labour left behind shows they can't be trusted. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
Don't let Labour do to your council what they did to the country. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
It is Conservative councils that have proved time and again | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
that they're best placed to deliver local needs. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
So today I'm calling on you to put this newly devolved power | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
into the hands of Conservatives. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Conservatives who spend money wisely, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and are transparent about how it's being spent. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Conservatives who believe in helping you with the cost of living, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
which is why we offered councils the funding | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
to freeze council tax for a second year in a row. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
Some councils have even cut their council tax for local residents. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:18
On top of the saving from last year, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
the Conservatives' council tax freeze initiative | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
has saved hard-working families and pensioners across the country | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
up to £147 on a Band D home since the election. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:32
Your council tax is likely to be less under a Conservative council | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
than under a Labour or a Liberal Democrat one. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
So don't let Labour do to your council what it did to the country. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
Let Conservatives in local government deliver for you. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48 |
