Well, today I'm going to Derby, getting out round the United Kingdom | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
is one of the most enjoyable things that I do, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
and one of the best parts of this job - hearing people's views. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
You don't always like everything you hear, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
but it's very important you get out there and you listen. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
I think the biggest issue this election, when times are difficult, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
is which party is actually gonna make sure | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
you get value for money for the services you want? | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
So, we haven't just frozen the council tax, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
but also we're putting money into education, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
making sure the police are on our streets, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
actually making sure services are good value for money. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
That's what Conservative councils are doing - | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
concentrating on what people want. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
You're off to a family firm that manufactures women's clothing. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
It's a really good example | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
of a family business that's kept in Britain, invested in Britain, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
expanded in Britain. So, this is something I do a lot of, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
which is just going to people's workplaces, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
wandering around, chatting to people, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
answering questions and hearing about people's concerns. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
I think it's important politicians come to listen, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
because we're the voice of the people. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
They can see what a lot of ordinary people are doing day in and day out. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
Hi, how are you? Nice to see you. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
What are you going to do to try | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
and get the textile trade back into the UK? | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
We need to help businesses by funding more apprenticeships... | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
-Oh, definitely. -..Then you get young people into the business. -Yes. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
We've got to keep the business taxes down, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
so businesses can put money in and expand, as they have here. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
We've got to keep interest rates low. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
-We've worked hard all our lives... -Yes. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
And saved - never had flash cars, never gone on flash holidays... | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
-Yeah. -And we're being penalised cos we've actually saved. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
-You've done the right thing. -Yeah. -When you do the right thing, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
the Government ought to back you and be behind you and help you. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
-Yeah, exactly. -You're keeping old-age pensioners in work | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
when there's so many young 'uns on the streets what need jobs. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
I don't think, in an economy, there's just a set number of jobs | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
and it's either for young people or older people. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
What we've got to try and do as a country is grow the number of jobs. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Imagine you're Prime Minister for the day and you've got a magic wand, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
what's the first thing you'd do? | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
-Give everybody a rise. -Give everyone a rise! I wish I could do that! | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
LAUGHTER | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
'You can read all sorts of bits of paper, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
'you can hear from all sorts of experts.' | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Thank you very much. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
But it's when you're here sitting down talking to someone | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
about why they need this change or that change, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
that is so much more powerful than anything you read | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
sat at a desk in Whitehall. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
One of the things that came through again and again | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
was how many people said, "Look, I work hard, my husband works hard, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
"but we don't feel we get enough backing | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
"as people who play by the rules." | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
And I think that's such an important message for politicians. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
People should vote Conservative on May 3rd, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
cos we understand that family finances are tight. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
That's why Conservative councils are providing good value for money. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
That's what people want right now, that's what people need right now. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Conservatives are on your side. That's how we'll help. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46 |
