Good afternoon and you find me at the doctors. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
Well, you have to accept any appointment you can get these days. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
For those who don't recognise it, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
this is the location for the lunchtime dose | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
of the medical drama, Doctors. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
That's right. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
As a nation of hypochondriacs, our evening appointments | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
with Casualty and Holby just won't suffice | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
so for the past 12 years there has been daytime surgery | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
here in Letherbridge too. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
So it is a surgery but not as we know it | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
in the same way that the captain of the Starship Enterprise | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
William Shatner is a presenter. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
But maybe he doesn't know it. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
This is the G8 summit and Greece's attempts to "Klingon" to the euro... | 0:01:07 | 0:01:13
LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
Can I just say what a joy and what a surreal experience it is having you on the show? | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
May I say...this is an out-of-body experience for me too! LAUGHTER | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
So, Captain Kirk makes an excellent job of being a comedian | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
anchoring a major BBC One production. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
But apparently the professional comedian | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
and anchorman Dara O'Briain did NOT make an excellent job | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
of being a comedian anchoring a major BBC One production. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
We're running to a tight schedule tonight. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
It's extremely tight because we've had to make extra space to allow | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
Adele to finish the acceptance speech she started at the Brits. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
LAUGHTER | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
No award for Dara, then. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
And it would seem Countryfile disappointed | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
its usually loyal audience last week too. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
The programme was billed as featuring new filming | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
based around the Humber. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Except lots of the filming wasn't new | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
and wasn't based around the Humber which could be a problem. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
Short-changed by Countryfile?! What is the world coming to? | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
I've been doing my sums and last week's hour-long episode was one of the scheduled | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
compilation programmes which repeats | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
previously-filmed material from the three years since the format changed in 2009. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:27
Cos there's not much better than being on the Humber in the boats that bear its name. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
But in amongst the repeats there were around 23 minutes | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
of new features. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
We have been gently nudged onto BBC Two today | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
but Countryfile will be on as usual this evening on BBC One | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
when they are promising to be in Northern Ireland. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
And Simon Reeve will also be in his usual slot this evening | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
which should please a lot of people. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Whoa, look! There's cars coming the wrong way down the road. HORN TOOTS | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
Get off the road! | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
It's a dual carriageway, going that way. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
There are law-abiding citizens of India | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
driving in the correct manner that way on the other side of the road. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
And there are numpty muppets driving giant trucks | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
directly at our vehicle on our side of the road. Whoa! | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
And whilst we're in the mood for globetrotting, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
although they have not personally dropped us a line to say so, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are said to be | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
huge fans of the foreign drama acquisition, The Killing. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
In fact, Camilla's not just seen it, she's got the T-shirt. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
Well, the pullover. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
I must say I got hooked to both series of The Killing too | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
and Borgen, the political one. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
BBC Four is doing really well with these international dramas | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
and it seems the appreciative royals are in good company. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
I do think that what BBC Four is offering of the moment | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
is a pretty broad range of programming. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
Inspector Montalbano from Italy, Spiral from France, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
and then of course our, what's been dubbed, Nordic noir, | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
the Scandinavian dramas such as The Bridge, The Killing and of course Borgen. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
And the key is that we're interested in the very best of | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
foreign dramas which deliver complex, complicated, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
enjoyable, entertaining dramas made to the highest quality. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
When we first looked at The Killing - | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
and we bought The Killing off the back of an afternoon | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
watching a number of dramas. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:17
We had some coffee and cake and watched half a dozen different dramas | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
and The Killing stood out as the great offering. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
I thought straight away this might be something BBC Four audiences would like. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
I have to confess, I couldn't have predicted it would be | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
the talked-about drama of 2011. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Now on BBC Four, with the whole country seemingly hooked | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
on Danish drama, it seemed only fair that we feed your addiction. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:39
There's some strong language in a double bill of Borgen. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
Borgen came along sometime after The Killing | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
and it was instantly an attractive proposition. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
The fact that it happens to be that we are in a coalition government | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
and this series was about the politics of a coalition government are coincidence. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
In the pipeline we've got a new drama coming up | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
called Lillehammer which is set in Lillehammer, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
in Norway, and it's the story of an American wise guy, a mafia type, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
who is on a security programme. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:09
He's snitched on his mates in America and he has to flee. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
We've also got Killing 3 coming up and of course Borgen and The Bridge will be back. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
And from Scandinavia - clearly the new home of successful drama - | 0:07:17 | 0:07:22
to Poland and the Ukraine where Panorama exposed | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
racism in football in a way that was really shocking. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
If you're arriving here by train, this is the greeting you'll get. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:33
And further down the platform it doesn't say, "Welcome to Warsaw", | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
it says, "Welcome to Hell". | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
This graffiti celebrates the White Legion, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
one of many violent groups organised around football. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
Let's take a look. Yep, they should be the other way round. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
And whilst we're examining things closely | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
and particularly as it is Jubilee weekend - | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
BBC producers take note - | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
do not show the Union Flag flying upside down, please! | 0:08:22 | 0:08:26
But this was the moment the torch reached the peak of its 70-day journey and burned bright. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:17
MUSIC: "God Save The Queen" | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
And for those of you still unsure, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
this is how the flag should be flown. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
Broad white stripe at the top at the pole side | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
or if no pole, then at the left. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
# God save our Queen. # | 0:09:30 | 0:09:35
All flags will be kept under close scrutiny this weekend. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
Now, one thing TV has led many of us to do in recent years | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
is pay much closer attention to family heirlooms. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
The plethora of TV antique shows where the contents | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
of an outhouse or a chance find at a car boot sale | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
have proved to be worth thousands have had us all hoping to turn up some treasure ourselves. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:57
But viewer Chris Dunkley claims the hunt for high-value collectables | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
has devalued antiques programmes themselves. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
Not only do I think there are too many antiques programmes on, | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
but a lot of them don't contain antiques. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
Call it "Junk Shop Challenge" or something, I don't care | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
what you call it but please do not call it antiques | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
when it's not antiques. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:18
This kingfisher salt and pepper set | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
is not antique, having been recently made. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
My interest in antiques started with Arthur Negus and Going For A Song. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
-Hello. -But you see, he spent time talking about them. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
He spent time explaining where they came from, how they were made, | 0:10:31 | 0:10:36
all the intrinsic things you want to know about an antique. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:41
An English silver bell salt made during the reign of Elizabeth I. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
You know what present-day salt cellars are like and you know | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
what those horrible little pimpy Victorian salt cellars are like. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
It was really interesting and that's really the thing I'm beefing about, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
is the lack of interest in some of these things. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
I'd like to get something in here for about two pounds, | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
it might be a big ask though. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
The one that really gets me is the Antiques Road Trip. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
That really upsets me for the simple reason that, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
I think with the dealers, when they're confronted by the experts | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
and no doubt a camera crew, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
they feel obliged and pressurised a little bit into selling. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
They must do. I don't think that's acceptable, I really don't. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
Tunbridge Ware, what could you do on that one? | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
How does 125 sound? | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
I'd prefer 60. I'm on my hands and knee... I'm on my knees here. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
-The ticket price is £34. -In an ideal world, at £15. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:36
I mean, he may walk into a lovely antique shop, point at an object | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
and say, "Yep, I'll offer you £2.50 for that, Tim, what do you think?" | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
I'd say, "I'm sorry, Chris, there's absolutely no chance." | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
Just be honest about it. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:48
Let's have proper antiques, proper prices and do a good job. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
So, low offers are not always going for a song | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
or indeed going, going, gone it would seem. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
Now, stethoscope in hand, we should have a search for the pulse rate | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
of Doctors itself since we're here. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
Is this series still pumping with energy, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
still beating after 12 years? | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
-So we get to carry on being doctors? -You're all fit for purpose, I'd say. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
Congratulations, Howard. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:50
-You've got the makings of an excellent practice here. -Thank you. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
"Love to hate", eh, Bright? But you're still watching, I see. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
So that's me off the waiting list. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
If you've got anything you want to get off YOUR chest about BBC TV, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
we would love you to write to us. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
And you know there's an e-mail address too, the address is: | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
or you can jump on the messageboard where it's lively. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
You could also phone us, the number is charged as | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
a local rate call from a landline and it is: | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
Goodbye. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:50
