-My name is Abby Hensel.

-And I'm Brittany Hensel. We are 22 years old.

0:00:020:00:05

People have been curious about us since we were born

0:00:050:00:08

for obvious reasons.

0:00:080:00:09

We're identical twins who are conjoined.

0:00:090:00:11

But our parents never let us use that as an excuse.

0:00:110:00:14

While life as a conjoined twin sometimes has its challenges...

0:00:140:00:17

..we were raised to believe

0:00:200:00:22

that we could do anything we wanted, so we do.

0:00:220:00:25

We like to think that the most amazing thing about us is,

0:00:250:00:27

we are just like everyone else. We really are normal.

0:00:270:00:30

-But I'm definitely more normal than Brit.

-Whatever!

0:00:300:00:34

Anyway, this is the story of our normal, regular life.

0:00:340:00:38

Well, our normal, conjoined life.

0:00:380:00:40

This is our life.

0:00:400:00:42

We are going to Italy!

0:00:420:00:44

We are travelling with our friends, Erin and Becca.

0:00:460:00:48

We decided to go on a trip after graduation.

0:00:480:00:51

I'm so excited for pasta.

0:00:510:00:54

I had always wanted to go on a trip to Italy.

0:00:540:00:56

It's also a place that Erin has never been.

0:00:560:00:59

-What are you looking forward to most?

-Being outside.

-Peeing outside?!

0:00:590:01:03

-Being outside.

-Oh, being outside!

0:01:030:01:06

We decided that we would go to Venice first for three days

0:01:060:01:09

and then the last two days in Rome.

0:01:090:01:12

-We should practise some Italian. Buon giorno.

-Buon giorno.

0:01:120:01:17

Thank you.

0:01:210:01:22

I think it's right up there.

0:01:230:01:26

Let's go.

0:01:260:01:27

-Hi.

-Hi.

-We have two rooms.

0:01:290:01:31

Yes.

0:01:310:01:33

-Oh, wow!

-This is good.

-I want to look at this.

0:01:380:01:42

-You also have a beautiful terrace.

-Oh, my gosh!

0:01:420:01:47

Our hotel was beautiful. Very classy.

0:01:470:01:50

It was right off of one of the ports in San Marco, so it was kind of cool.

0:01:500:01:55

Well, let the adventure begin.

0:01:550:01:57

-Or continue.

-Or continue.

0:01:590:02:01

When we first got there, we got settled in the hotel

0:02:070:02:10

and then thought it would be fun to do a gondola ride.

0:02:100:02:12

-Are you excited about the gondola?

-Yes, I'm very excited. Are you?

0:02:120:02:17

Yes, I am. It will be fun.

0:02:170:02:19

We love doing our make-up.

0:02:190:02:21

It's definitely our favourite part of the day.

0:02:210:02:24

It's something we have down to a routine.

0:02:240:02:27

It's not something we discuss or talk about,

0:02:280:02:31

we just grab and go and get it done quick.

0:02:310:02:34

-Are you guys almost ready?

-Yes. I just need to blow-dry my hair.

0:02:340:02:37

It's going to blow up.

0:02:390:02:41

Just go quick.

0:02:420:02:44

Watching them do their hair fascinates me.

0:02:480:02:50

Brittany will start doing her hair and Abby will start adjusting it

0:02:500:02:54

and it's like, "How did you know that's what she's going for?"

0:02:540:02:58

I can't even always figure out how to do my own hair symmetrically

0:03:010:03:04

so I don't know how they do each other's so well.

0:03:040:03:07

OK, let's go.

0:03:140:03:15

-Ready for the gondola?

-Keys?

-Keys.

0:03:150:03:19

Here we go.

0:03:230:03:24

-This will be fun.

-This is going to be super great.

0:03:240:03:27

-Hi.

-Hi.

-Hello.

0:03:270:03:29

This is gorgeous.

0:03:330:03:34

This is a great way to see Venice

0:03:370:03:39

because there are so many hidden alleys and stuff like that.

0:03:390:03:43

This will be in their family photo album.

0:03:510:03:53

Here we go.

0:03:530:03:55

We held up umbrellas to kind of shield from the cameras.

0:03:560:04:00

Obviously, when we are filming, it has more of a draw to it

0:04:000:04:05

so we use umbrellas as blockers.

0:04:050:04:07

This is so great.

0:04:070:04:09

-Yes.

-Should I?

-Yes.

-No.

-You can do it.

-Yes.

-Do it!

0:04:120:04:17

You can do it.

0:04:170:04:18

It's only for a picture.

0:04:180:04:21

Welcome to my office!

0:04:210:04:23

Spaghetti!

0:04:230:04:26

Smile!

0:04:270:04:28

-This is so great.

-This is really cool right here.

0:04:330:04:36

I can't believe people live here.

0:04:360:04:38

The gondola ride was really fun.

0:04:380:04:41

It was actually really unique. It was a great experience.

0:04:410:04:44

It's a neat little ride.

0:04:440:04:46

-Prego.

-Prego.

0:04:470:04:49

On our second day in Venice,

0:04:590:05:01

we thought it would be fun to do a cooking lesson.

0:05:010:05:04

We had to take a ferry to get on to the correct island.

0:05:050:05:09

And then we walked down to her house.

0:05:110:05:14

This is absolutely beautiful.

0:05:140:05:17

-Ready to cook?

-Let's cook.

0:05:170:05:19

Wow!

0:05:210:05:22

Oh, my gosh!

0:05:230:05:25

-Hello.

-Hi.

-Nice to meet you.

0:05:260:05:29

Merica was the cooking teacher

0:05:290:05:31

and she owns her own catering business

0:05:310:05:34

and she runs a bed-and-breakfast in her home.

0:05:340:05:37

Very good.

0:05:370:05:39

It was really great. It was super, super Italian.

0:05:390:05:43

OK, so we are going to do some typical pasta dish, Italian.

0:05:430:05:51

And then we do the traditional tiramisu because I know you like it.

0:05:510:05:55

Yes!

0:05:550:05:56

Some olive oil.

0:05:560:05:58

OK. What you can start to do is squeeze this.

0:05:580:06:02

-Oh, wow!

-OK.

0:06:050:06:07

Just try and squeeze it now.

0:06:070:06:09

-Oh!

-OK.

0:06:090:06:13

So you don't want to over-squeeze it.

0:06:130:06:15

You have to get dirty!

0:06:150:06:17

Incorporate a little weight

0:06:180:06:20

and you will see that, little by little, it will hold together.

0:06:200:06:24

You look like you've made this all your life. You are doing very well.

0:06:280:06:33

-Thank you.

-OK.

0:06:330:06:36

-Too much?

-Maybe.

0:06:370:06:39

The hardest thing was probably making the gnocchi.

0:06:410:06:44

-The idea is to roll like that...

-Oh, wow!

0:06:450:06:49

..to make a kind of scoop.

0:06:490:06:51

This is the difficult part.

0:06:530:06:55

-I control the right side.

-I control the left side.

0:06:550:06:58

We are very coordinated.

0:06:580:06:59

We typically don't have a problem.

0:06:590:07:01

The gnocchi was hard for all of us.

0:07:010:07:03

It was crazy.

0:07:030:07:05

This is very flat. This is like a steak!

0:07:050:07:08

We made a joke out of it and moved on to the next thing.

0:07:080:07:11

Very good.

0:07:110:07:13

You keep going.

0:07:130:07:15

The girls were better with the complex, multitasking things

0:07:150:07:19

because they are so used to multitasking all the time.

0:07:190:07:23

That was kind of fun

0:07:230:07:25

that we each had our own thing that we were really good at.

0:07:250:07:28

We can do this.

0:07:280:07:29

I think the best part of cooking was we made it a team effort

0:07:310:07:36

and we all did a part of it.

0:07:360:07:37

Look how beautiful it is.

0:07:390:07:41

This has to be cold, espresso coffee.

0:07:410:07:44

Very concentrated.

0:07:440:07:46

-The easiest thing was probably making the tiramisu.

-Yeah.

0:07:460:07:49

You can't go wrong with dipping a cookie in

0:07:490:07:52

and then placing them on top of each other.

0:07:520:07:55

And then we create chocolate shave.

0:07:560:07:58

Brittany cut Abby's finger

0:08:030:08:05

when they were shaving chocolate for the tiramisu.

0:08:050:08:08

That was the first time I had seen one of them hurt each other.

0:08:080:08:12

They were still positive about it. They handled it well.

0:08:120:08:15

They washed it off real quick and jumped right back in there.

0:08:150:08:18

OK.

0:08:200:08:21

I'm starving.

0:08:210:08:23

Thank you.

0:08:270:08:29

Bon appetit.

0:08:290:08:30

-The food was incredible.

-Phenomenal. We enjoyed it so much.

0:08:400:08:44

The ravioli is still my favourite.

0:08:440:08:47

That's really good.

0:08:470:08:49

-I'm really picky.

-And I'm not. I like most things.

0:08:490:08:53

-I don't like it.

-Really?

-No.

0:08:530:08:56

I could probably eat kids' food all the time.

0:08:560:08:59

I like a lot of meat and potatoes and home-made food and stuff like that.

0:08:590:09:05

There's always something that each of us likes better together,

0:09:050:09:09

so we just compromise.

0:09:090:09:12

-Tiramisu.

-Here we go!

0:09:120:09:14

-Oh, my goodness!

-Wow!

0:09:140:09:18

Typically, we share a plate, just because we don't need to eat

0:09:190:09:22

two full servings because our stomachs are not two full sizes.

0:09:220:09:26

They are just a little bit smaller.

0:09:260:09:28

But she gave us two helpings of tiramisu.

0:09:280:09:32

-And you really can't pass that up.

-So we had two!

0:09:320:09:35

-That's really good.

-Like heaven.

0:09:400:09:42

They both love sweets so that was funny

0:09:450:09:48

because they'll eat one meal or one glass of water,

0:09:480:09:50

but when the dessert comes out, they'll both take their own.

0:09:500:09:54

I could eat tiramisu every day. Every day.

0:09:540:09:56

-Let's toast, I suppose.

-A toast to being good chefs and having fun.

0:09:590:10:03

So, Merica told us that her husband is a glass-blower,

0:10:190:10:24

and the business had been in their family for centuries,

0:10:240:10:27

um, and we thought it would be really cool to see that.

0:10:270:10:30

Merica's cousin, Mario, met us and walked us over there

0:10:300:10:36

and just kind of gave us a good tour of how it was actually made.

0:10:360:10:41

All the things you see here - those are ovens. OK?

0:10:410:10:44

So they put silicium in here - they put sand in here -

0:10:440:10:47

and it gets to a certain temperature and then they can work it.

0:10:470:10:51

One of the men... You see?

0:10:510:10:53

Oh, my gosh.

0:10:530:10:54

Wow.

0:10:540:10:56

That's so cool!

0:10:560:10:57

Because he uses the fire and his hand to model it.

0:10:570:11:02

Oh...my...gosh!

0:11:020:11:05

That's so cool.

0:11:070:11:09

We're super-artsy, so that stuff was super-fun to us.

0:11:090:11:12

And, like, fascinating, how they make it.

0:11:120:11:14

We loved to learn how they make it. It seemed just so cool.

0:11:140:11:16

Oh, my gosh.

0:11:160:11:18

Wow!

0:11:200:11:21

That's awesome!

0:11:230:11:25

After they make the vase - they should have put it here.

0:11:250:11:28

These are pieces of chandeliers we have.

0:11:280:11:32

This oven with the numbers? Those are the colours.

0:11:320:11:35

The touristy stuff is super-fun,

0:11:350:11:36

but I feel like you get more of the cultural experience

0:11:360:11:40

when you are out of the tourist area.

0:11:400:11:43

So it was super-neat to get, like, a behind-the-scene, um, tour.

0:11:430:11:47

All these are pieces of glass that we don't use any more.

0:11:470:11:51

The broken ones. You could re-use it, but the quality goes down.

0:11:510:11:56

OK, we can go on, I think.

0:11:560:11:59

We are this huge, loud family!

0:11:590:12:04

After taking our tour through the glass factory,

0:12:040:12:06

Mario took us to the actual shop that they have

0:12:060:12:09

where they displayed all of their pieces that they have for sell.

0:12:090:12:13

It was great that we could see the finished product.

0:12:150:12:18

-You see that it has, actually, some, like, bleeding.

-Ew. Yeah.

-Amethyst.

0:12:180:12:22

-This is awesome!

-I'm happy you like it, actually.

-I love it!

0:12:230:12:27

I love the black and white.

0:12:290:12:30

It was really nice.

0:12:300:12:32

It was great of him to just, um,... jump in and show us around, like that.

0:12:320:12:36

And he was our age, so it was kinda cool.

0:12:360:12:39

You did a great job. High five.

0:12:390:12:41

-Do you high-five here?

-Not that much.

0:12:410:12:43

-You pound it?

-Sometimes.

0:12:430:12:47

-Yeah!

-Sometimes, yeah.

-Whoa!

-Cool, actually!

0:12:470:12:51

I hope it was fun.

0:12:510:12:53

It was good fun, thank you so much!

0:12:530:12:55

We spent about three days in Venice and then we took the train to Rome.

0:13:020:13:07

So we had to haul all our luggage to the train station.

0:13:070:13:09

Almost there!

0:13:090:13:11

Almost there!

0:13:110:13:12

It was so hot! You just want to die!

0:13:120:13:15

-Come on, muscles! Go, Erin, go!

-We should have packed lighter.

0:13:150:13:20

The train ride was four hours from Venice to Rome

0:13:250:13:27

but it did not feel like that.

0:13:270:13:29

It was nice to just sit and relax.

0:13:290:13:30

We slept some of the way and just kind of veged.

0:13:300:13:34

What do you think Rome's going to look like?

0:13:340:13:37

I don't know.

0:13:370:13:38

You know what they say though...

0:13:380:13:40

-When in Rome...

-When in Rome...

0:13:400:13:43

..do as the Romans.

0:13:430:13:46

-That's the Egyptians, but it's OK.

-Oh!

0:13:460:13:50

Oh...! Epic fail.

0:13:500:13:52

Let's go get gelato!

0:13:530:13:55

-Finally!

-Can't wait!

0:13:550:13:58

So when we got to Rome we got all settled

0:13:580:14:02

and checked into our hotel and we said we wanted a gelato.

0:14:020:14:06

Because that's like what Italy's known for.

0:14:060:14:09

-Left or right?

-Straight!

-Straight!

0:14:090:14:12

-You know where it is?

-I think it's just down here.

0:14:120:14:14

Then we made it to Giolitti, the gelato shop.

0:14:150:14:18

We order from here.

0:14:180:14:19

-Hello!

-How are you?

-Hello.

0:14:210:14:24

The gelato place we went to, they had so many different flavours,

0:14:240:14:27

and we were trying to pick

0:14:270:14:28

different combinations so we could try each others' and it was fun.

0:14:280:14:32

-Thank you!

-That looks great!

0:14:330:14:36

Becca's looks phenom! Let's eat it!

0:14:360:14:40

-OK.

-This is so good.

0:14:400:14:44

We got orange.

0:14:440:14:46

And then we got pistachio, which Brittany wanted.

0:14:460:14:49

And then we got peach, because we're obsessed with peach lately.

0:14:490:14:53

That was really good. We really it a lot. We really like gelato.

0:14:530:14:56

-Please take.

-Oh! Oh, my gosh!

0:14:560:14:59

-Hi!

-Hi!

-I'm Abby.

-I'm Brittany.

0:14:590:15:02

'So the Giolitti store is very famous,'

0:15:020:15:06

and big-time actresses and actors and important people were there.

0:15:060:15:09

-This is me.

-That's you!

-Ben Stiller.

-This is Ben Stiller!

0:15:090:15:12

Ben Stiller!

0:15:120:15:14

And the owner was showing us the book that all these famous people signed.

0:15:140:15:20

-Michelle Obama!

-Yes.

0:15:200:15:22

Wow!

0:15:220:15:23

-And this is Cameron Diaz.

-Wow!

-Sharon Stone.

0:15:230:15:29

'And it was funny, because Becca was trying to ask him questions.'

0:15:290:15:32

OK, so we have a question for you.

0:15:320:15:34

-What makes gelato different than ice cream?

-Huh?

0:15:340:15:37

What makes gelato different from ice cream?

0:15:370:15:39

'And he was so proud of his book that he completely, like,'

0:15:420:15:45

-didn't even acknowledge it.

-And we thought that was hysterical.

0:15:450:15:48

It was so funny.

0:15:480:15:49

He was great!

0:15:490:15:53

-Thank you so much.

-Thank you for the visit.

-Have a good day.

0:15:530:15:58

Bye.

0:15:580:15:59

-Oh, wow!

-Well, this was fun.

-This was so cool!

0:16:020:16:04

After we ate gelato, we went to Trevi Fountain.

0:16:100:16:13

Um...it was gorgeous!

0:16:130:16:14

This is really beautiful.

0:16:140:16:16

This is gorgeous.

0:16:160:16:18

Super-chaotic, though. A lot of people.

0:16:190:16:22

-Excuse me, would you take a picture of us?

-OK.

0:16:250:16:27

Thank you! Thank you.

0:16:280:16:30

We don't mind crowds so much,

0:16:310:16:34

but obviously a camera crew draws attention

0:16:340:16:37

and we draw attention in ourselves, so that doubled the attention!

0:16:370:16:41

And we don't like attention.

0:16:410:16:43

Maybe not right here?

0:16:430:16:45

I'm amazed at how it doesn't get them bogged down.

0:16:450:16:48

And they're still so courageous to go to new places.

0:16:480:16:50

And so brave.

0:16:500:16:52

And just kind of let a lot of things slide off their back

0:16:520:16:54

and don't think twice about it.

0:16:540:16:57

-Shall we make a wish?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:16:570:16:59

It's just something they've grown accustomed to

0:16:590:17:02

and kind of deal with it as it comes.

0:17:020:17:04

One, two, three!

0:17:040:17:06

So we saw it, got our pictures and enjoyed it and then...headed out.

0:17:080:17:13

-Let's go.

-Back this way. Come this way.

0:17:130:17:15

Can't tell what you wish for

0:17:150:17:17

otherwise it won't come true.

0:17:170:17:19

Where's Erin?

0:17:200:17:21

So we knew that we didn't have much time in Rome,

0:17:290:17:32

so we decided to take a Vespa tour,

0:17:320:17:34

just to get around the city really fast and see everything.

0:17:340:17:37

-Hi, Abby. Hi, Brittany.

-Nice to meet you.

-I'm Annie.

0:17:370:17:40

'Our guide was Annie and it's a small world

0:17:400:17:43

'because she is actually born and raised in Minnesota

0:17:430:17:45

'which is where we live.'

0:17:450:17:47

-So it was really cool.

-And she was really cool.

0:17:470:17:49

So, let's go. Let's get you some helmets.

0:17:510:17:54

There you go.

0:17:540:17:55

You're going to see a lot today on the tour.

0:17:550:17:58

You girls love helmets!

0:17:580:18:00

Here we go!

0:18:000:18:02

Yeah!

0:18:020:18:03

'We'd never ridden a Vespa, so we didn't know what to expect.'

0:18:070:18:10

Um, we know that traffic in Rome is very...crazy.

0:18:100:18:15

Oh, my goodness!

0:18:150:18:16

We don't like motorcycles and jetskis - or, I do -

0:18:160:18:19

but Brittany doesn't!

0:18:190:18:20

So, we don't go on 'em too much.

0:18:200:18:22

So we were a little nervous at first, but we got used to it fast.

0:18:260:18:29

Whoo-hoo!

0:18:290:18:30

THEY CHEER

0:18:310:18:32

So our first stop is the Coliseum,

0:18:470:18:49

which I believe is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

0:18:490:18:53

We're basically facing the centre of Ancient Rome.

0:18:530:18:56

The Coliseum was gorgeous. Like, the architecture is amazing.

0:18:560:18:59

And just, like, the ancient aspect of it was so cool.

0:18:590:19:04

And this is where they had the gladiator games.

0:19:040:19:07

The wild beast fights, musical and religious events.

0:19:070:19:11

Um...all the games were free,

0:19:110:19:13

it just depended on your class in society. OK?

0:19:130:19:16

-You want another photo here?

-Yeah!

-I'll do more of a close-up.

-Perfect.

0:19:160:19:22

Looking good, ladies!

0:19:220:19:24

-All right, back on the Vespas?

-Yeah.

-Sure!

-OK.

0:19:240:19:27

'The Vespa tour was probably, at least, my favourite event of the trip.'

0:19:290:19:33

When in Rome!

0:19:330:19:35

'We were kind of each able to just experience Italy in a new way'

0:19:350:19:39

that was fast-paced, just as the girls are!

0:19:390:19:42

This is the mall.

0:19:420:19:44

The Vatican.

0:19:440:19:46

GIRLS WHOOP

0:19:460:19:47

But that had a little more protection and shield to exposure to other people.

0:19:470:19:52

So this is the Garden of Oranges.

0:19:520:19:55

Annie moved there seven years ago because she studied abroad

0:19:550:19:58

and fell in love with it so much that she permanently moved there.

0:19:580:20:02

She knew a lot of facts about Rome and Italy in general.

0:20:020:20:05

So it was great to have her as our guide.

0:20:050:20:07

This isn't technically a fontanella,

0:20:070:20:09

but there's another one out there that's an nasoni

0:20:090:20:11

which I will tell you about.

0:20:110:20:13

But this has the lupa, the she-wolf.

0:20:130:20:16

So you do this.

0:20:160:20:17

It's fresh, clean, pure aqueduct water.

0:20:210:20:23

Getting the water to be the right pressure

0:20:280:20:31

was definitely weird, at first.

0:20:310:20:33

If you pushed too hard it went up your nose,

0:20:330:20:35

if you didn't push hard enough it didn't come out.

0:20:350:20:38

Abby and Brit didn't quite get that so they got sprayed in the face.

0:20:390:20:44

That was kind of funny to watch them try that.

0:20:460:20:49

There you go!

0:20:490:20:51

I'll stick with the bottle.

0:20:510:20:53

The Vespa tour was probably the highlight of the trip for everyone.

0:20:570:21:01

Just because it was something unique

0:21:010:21:03

and different that none of us has ever done.

0:21:030:21:06

So we really enjoyed it.

0:21:060:21:09

-It was so fun meeting you.

-Thank you so much.

0:21:100:21:13

It was so fun showing you.

0:21:130:21:15

-Go Minnesota!

-Whoa!

0:21:150:21:18

ALL: Ciao! Thank you!

0:21:180:21:19

Thank you.

0:21:210:21:22

-That was awesome.

-That was so much fun!

0:21:220:21:26

That was so cool.

0:21:260:21:28

'That night we had our, like, final dinner.

0:21:340:21:37

'Kind of like chatted about the trip

0:21:370:21:39

'and reminisced about favourite parts.'

0:21:390:21:41

-So much fun stuff. Mm-hm.

-We really did.

0:21:410:21:45

It's going to be fun to look through all the pictures.

0:21:450:21:47

'I think the trip was a good bonding experience for all of us.'

0:21:470:21:50

And we became closer, and that's a memory that we'll have for ever.

0:21:500:21:54

'I definitely feel closer to Abby an Brit after this trip.

0:21:540:21:57

'Just seeing how they always stay so positive,'

0:21:570:22:01

gave me even more respect for them than I already had.

0:22:010:22:04

That's one thing I like about Europe that it's so full of culture.

0:22:040:22:07

'All in all it was a wonderful trip. It's good to get away for a while.'

0:22:070:22:11

We've a lot to do back home -

0:22:110:22:12

finding a job, finding a house, and getting somewhere with that.

0:22:120:22:17

'It was great that we could all take this time and go have fun.

0:22:170:22:20

'It was such a great experience.'

0:22:200:22:22

-To safe travels and good friends.

-ALL: Cheers! Ciao!

0:22:220:22:24

Ciao bella!

0:22:240:22:26

-What are you doing? Taking pictures...

-Taking pictures down.

0:22:340:22:36

-And then, do you want me to take these off the mirror?

-Yes, please.

0:22:360:22:39

Summer is winding down and it's going to be the time

0:22:390:22:42

where we have to pack up and start moving into our new house.

0:22:420:22:45

We should maybe get like a box together

0:22:450:22:47

-to do the stuff on the bookcase.

-OK.

0:22:470:22:49

'We're going to be living with some of the same roommates that we had our senior year.'

0:22:490:22:53

But we're still getting interviews and looking for jobs.

0:22:530:22:55

-Do you need instructions, girls?

-No, I have it done already.

0:22:550:22:58

Do you need instructions, Mom?

0:22:580:22:59

'We've kind of being prepped like there aren't a lot of jobs,'

0:22:590:23:02

so don't expect a whole lot.

0:23:020:23:05

I think maybe three or four of our classmates have gotten jobs,

0:23:050:23:08

which is not really a great number.

0:23:080:23:10

-Empty. Empty.

-Garbage.

0:23:100:23:12

Throw all this away.

0:23:120:23:14

You girls are like pack rats.

0:23:140:23:16

When they're empty, throw them out.

0:23:160:23:19

'We're going to be looking for full-time teaching jobs'

0:23:190:23:22

through September and as far as we can find openings.

0:23:220:23:26

But in September, October maybe, we'll look more at subbing

0:23:260:23:30

versus getting a full-time job.

0:23:300:23:32

Because the chances are less likely to get a job

0:23:320:23:36

'as a full-time teacher in like October, November.'

0:23:360:23:39

-We should probably start.

-OK.

0:23:390:23:40

Do you want to mark this "nightstand stuff"?

0:23:400:23:42

'Mom came along, cos she's an excellent packer.

0:23:420:23:45

'She's great at organising things and we don't like to pack too much.'

0:23:450:23:49

So she keeps us moving and getting stuff done.

0:23:490:23:52

Oh, this is chaos!

0:23:520:23:54

-Did you ever clean?

-Yes, Mom, we've cleaned.

0:23:540:23:57

'Mom was a big help,'

0:23:570:23:58

because it'd have taken eight times as long, cos we're just so like...

0:23:580:24:01

THEY SING

0:24:010:24:03

..and procrastinate all the time.

0:24:030:24:04

All those transcripts.

0:24:040:24:06

This is the transcript? No, just like...extracurricular.

0:24:060:24:10

Remember this?

0:24:120:24:13

'I'm definitely more of a pack rat.'

0:24:130:24:15

I definitely like to keep everything. Yeah. All the time.

0:24:150:24:17

But I'm like, "Throw it away, we don't need it any more."

0:24:170:24:20

Why do you need this? Cos it has a good certificate.

0:24:200:24:23

When they're undecided about something

0:24:230:24:25

or they each have a different perspective

0:24:250:24:27

of how they want it to go,

0:24:270:24:28

then, they look for somebody that'll break the tie.

0:24:280:24:31

Shall I tape or do you want to...?

0:24:310:24:33

Let's test out your skills.

0:24:330:24:35

Abby and Brit like to be in charge.

0:24:350:24:37

Look what you did!

0:24:370:24:39

'Abby definitely is the more vocal one'

0:24:390:24:43

and Brittany is more reserved

0:24:430:24:45

and, at the end, she'll tell you everything she thinks.

0:24:450:24:49

-This is a disaster.

-No, it will be OK.

0:24:490:24:51

'Everyone is so excited about the new house.'

0:24:510:24:54

Katy had just texted us today and it was like, "I can't wait to move!"

0:24:540:24:57

Here are our pretty ducks!

0:24:570:24:59

'We're a bit crazy.'

0:25:020:25:03

We're girls, girls are crazy!

0:25:030:25:05

OK.

0:25:050:25:07

Let's go.

0:25:070:25:08

We decided we're going to live with our parents for, like, three weeks.

0:25:120:25:16

Um...and a friend was coming into town from London,

0:25:160:25:18

so we decided to pick him up.

0:25:180:25:21

-How are you?

-Good, how are you?!

0:25:210:25:23

-Come on in.

-OK!

-Do this!

0:25:230:25:25

First stop pub, yeah?

0:25:250:25:27

-Yeah, right?

-Yeah!

0:25:270:25:29

-All right, now, don't crash.

-I'm not going to crash.

0:25:290:25:31

-You already confessed how bad your driving is.

-I did not say that!

0:25:310:25:34

So we met Richie in England, one of the times we were there.

0:25:340:25:38

'And he's never been to the States, he's coming to America'

0:25:380:25:41

and thought it'd be fun to make a stop at our place.

0:25:410:25:44

-How do we get home?

-You're asking me how to get home.

0:25:440:25:47

I have no bait at all.

0:25:470:25:49

God help me.

0:25:490:25:51

Drive and laugh...is hard at the same time.

0:25:510:25:54

I met Abby and Brit on one of their trips to London.

0:25:540:25:57

'You know, it's not something you see every day, conjoined twins,

0:25:570:26:00

'it's pretty unique.'

0:26:000:26:02

They're just like two average girls.

0:26:020:26:04

They're really, really funny, really, really warm and a really good laugh.

0:26:040:26:07

Oh, I think we're lost.

0:26:070:26:09

You're lost!

0:26:090:26:11

You're lost.

0:26:110:26:13

You're lost as in geographically embarrassed lost?

0:26:130:26:16

A little bit...

0:26:160:26:17

This is your town!

0:26:170:26:19

'Out trip got a lot longer'

0:26:190:26:21

because I wasn't paying attention to where I was going

0:26:210:26:24

so...we missed a few turns.

0:26:240:26:27

-Does anybody have a GPS, because... Wait.

-Hang on.

0:26:270:26:31

Wow!

0:26:310:26:33

'It blows my mind, actually, to be honest,'

0:26:330:26:35

you know, you have to use sort of every part of your body

0:26:350:26:37

and you have to, you know, keep your eyes on the road.

0:26:370:26:40

'I kind of look at it...

0:26:400:26:41

'If I was sitting in the driver's seat with a friend'

0:26:410:26:44

and I drive with one hand and, you know, they drive with the other,

0:26:440:26:48

how well we'd get on?

0:26:480:26:49

'Try to equate that with Abby and Brit.

0:26:490:26:51

'I suppose they've been doing it so long'

0:26:510:26:53

that it's just second nature to them.

0:26:530:26:55

I think we have a long journey.

0:26:550:26:57

Yeah.

0:26:570:26:58

They were properly lost.

0:26:580:27:00

What is she doing? She can't even see!

0:27:000:27:02

I have a great advantage here.

0:27:020:27:04

-Two eyes on the road!

-I know.

0:27:040:27:06

-To be honest, you can't argue with that, can you?

-No, you can't. No.

0:27:060:27:11

-Well, this is Minnesota.

-Yeah.

0:27:110:27:12

You just want to see as much of Minnesota as you can.

0:27:120:27:15

-I do, yeah.

-Yeah, so take it in, buddy.

0:27:150:27:17

I'm taking it all in, I'm like a sponge, I'm absorbing it.

0:27:170:27:20

When we did actually find our way back and realised where we were,

0:27:200:27:26

the girls took me through their home town where they grew up.

0:27:260:27:29

-So...

-I feel like I've just walked in a Western.

0:27:290:27:31

THEY LAUGH

0:27:310:27:33

This is the high school.

0:27:340:27:36

-Was it a happy time at high school?

-I loved high school.

0:27:360:27:38

-Did you enjoy every minute of it?

-I loved high school.

-I hated high school.

0:27:380:27:41

Oh, I loved it! I had...I had such a good time.

0:27:410:27:44

That's where I used to live, right there.

0:27:440:27:46

-Oh, cool. So that one with the curved roof?

-Yeah.

0:27:460:27:48

It was really, really nice to get that insight into their home life

0:27:480:27:53

and where they grew up.

0:27:530:27:55

So we have some time before we can move into our new house,

0:27:590:28:02

so we decided to stay with our parents

0:28:020:28:04

for the next couple of weeks.

0:28:040:28:05

-What a nice house!

-Thank you!

0:28:050:28:07

I'm on best behaviour, no swearing in front of Mum.

0:28:070:28:09

No swearing in front of Mom.

0:28:090:28:11

Hello! How are you doing, Patty?

0:28:110:28:12

-How are you?

-Lovely to meet you.

-Me too.

0:28:120:28:14

Since it was the end of summer, we were having a Labor Day party

0:28:140:28:17

with our friends and just get everybody together.

0:28:170:28:19

-You've got a few people coming round today?

-Yeah!

0:28:190:28:21

When we found out that Richie was coming,

0:28:210:28:23

we decided to go crazy and make it an American-themed party.

0:28:230:28:27

-Oh, my... Is that a flapjack, right, no?

-A flapjack?

0:28:270:28:30

-A bit like a flapjack.

-That's a pancake.

0:28:300:28:32

-A flapjack is like a bar.

-No, a flapjack is a pancake.

0:28:320:28:35

In America, you're in America!

0:28:350:28:37

All right, all right. My bad, my bad.

0:28:370:28:39

-So are you going to give me the grand tour?

-Yes, here it is!

0:28:390:28:42

This is the living room.

0:28:420:28:44

HE LAUGHS

0:28:440:28:45

Check the cheesy grins out.

0:28:450:28:47

Yeah, we were all crying...

0:28:470:28:48

They made you take that family picture. When was that taken?

0:28:480:28:51

-Oh, you're at that age when all your teeth are falling out.

-Yeah.

0:28:510:28:54

What's that for?

0:28:540:28:55

That's us in Life magazine.

0:28:550:28:56

We were going up the stairs and there's a huge photo of them

0:28:560:28:59

on the cover of Life magazine.

0:28:590:29:00

And that was the kind of first time I realised that, actually,

0:29:000:29:03

they've been in the press quite a bit since they were younger.

0:29:030:29:06

-That's real, like, we were in Life magazine.

-Ah...

0:29:060:29:09

'Since the girls turned 18,'

0:29:090:29:11

it seems like people aren't quite as sympathetic towards them

0:29:110:29:14

and I don't mean people, public, I mean people like journalists maybe

0:29:140:29:18

and I don't want to classify them all in the same category

0:29:180:29:21

by any means.

0:29:210:29:23

But it was almost like after they turned 18, they were like fair game.

0:29:230:29:28

-It's like MTV Creeps.

-I liked it!

0:29:280:29:31

Yeah? You've got like the best rapper accent.

0:29:310:29:34

-THEY RAP:

-Yo, yo, yo!

-Yo! You've got a food bowl.

0:29:340:29:36

-THEY RAP:

-That's a food bowl!

-That's where the magic happens.

0:29:360:29:39

'That's probably been the hardest thing for me,'

0:29:390:29:41

it's to... I can't control that.

0:29:410:29:45

No, do this one. You can do this one.

0:29:450:29:47

'The girls don't see themselves as famous at all.

0:29:470:29:50

'And, you know, seeing that front page spread

0:29:500:29:53

'is like, you are actually famous.'

0:29:530:29:55

You've got your own show. But the girls are adamant, you know,

0:29:550:29:58

they're not famous, they don't want to be famous.

0:29:580:30:01

-This is our room.

-This is your room?

0:30:010:30:02

-Yeah.

-This is a pad.

-Yeah.

0:30:020:30:04

-Banished downstairs cos you don't behave.

-Downstairs everywhere...

0:30:040:30:08

'We don't see ourselves as being famous'

0:30:080:30:11

or this cool thing, like, we live our lives normally

0:30:110:30:15

as everyone else does in an everyday way

0:30:150:30:17

and so, like, we just don't need that or want that.

0:30:170:30:23

We want to live normal day-to-day lives just like everybody else.

0:30:230:30:27

People have to know that the stuff that they read

0:30:270:30:30

isn't always really what is the truth.

0:30:300:30:32

And some people like to make it sound as good as they can

0:30:320:30:37

or as bad as they can just because of...

0:30:370:30:40

It may make them more money, actually,

0:30:400:30:42

at somebody else's expense. And that's what's sad.

0:30:420:30:45

-Where is this? Is this in college?

-That was in college.

0:30:450:30:48

-What's this?

-That was my graduation invitation.

0:30:480:30:50

We don't appreciate like magazines

0:30:500:30:52

taking our story and making it theirs

0:30:520:30:55

or rumours of engagements or stuff like that, crazy stuff like that.

0:30:550:31:00

There's not many pictures of you when you were a kid,

0:31:000:31:02

apart from that one upstairs when you're kids.

0:31:020:31:04

-Apart from this one.

-Yeah.

0:31:040:31:06

I know Abby and Brit get over it far better than I do,

0:31:060:31:09

you know, as the mother,

0:31:090:31:10

you get real furious about that kind of thing.

0:31:100:31:14

And they're your kids and...

0:31:140:31:16

I don't know, people...

0:31:160:31:18

The hard part for me is that people don't have to be accountable.

0:31:180:31:22

-There's Santa Claus.

-Did you get everything you wanted that year?

0:31:220:31:24

-I don't remember.

-No?

0:31:240:31:25

'They deal with the hand they've been dealt and they just get on with it.

0:31:250:31:29

'I think it'd be really, really easy for someone to just go, you know,

0:31:290:31:31

'"We're conjoined twins, I'm just going to shut myself away

0:31:310:31:34

'"and I'm not going to get involved in anything

0:31:340:31:36

'"and I'm going to care about what people think about me."

0:31:360:31:39

'Whereas the girls are like,'

0:31:390:31:40

"You know, what? We're just going to get on with life and try anything."

0:31:400:31:44

And they won't let anything stop in their way,

0:31:440:31:46

least of all sharing a body.

0:31:460:31:47

Mom, look at this!

0:31:530:31:54

That's hilarious.

0:31:570:31:59

-How are we doing, ladies? All right?

-This is Richie.

-How are you?

0:31:590:32:02

Nice to meet you. Did you guys coordinate this, did you?

0:32:020:32:05

How are you doing? Nice to meet you.

0:32:050:32:07

Our roommate, Kayla, had texted us previously

0:32:070:32:10

that her and Ali were matching.

0:32:100:32:12

And we come to the house and I open the door...

0:32:120:32:15

And we had the same outfit on they did. Quite the roommate moment.

0:32:150:32:19

We were screaming. It was pretty funny.

0:32:190:32:21

It's the roommates in us, you know? I don't know what happened to you.

0:32:210:32:25

Cari Jo is looking hot, is what it is.

0:32:250:32:28

LAUGHTER

0:32:280:32:29

Put your hand on your heart and repeat after me.

0:32:330:32:36

-I pledge allegiance.

-I pledge allegiance.

0:32:360:32:38

-To the flag.

-To the flag.

0:32:380:32:40

-Of the United States of America.

-Of the United States of America.

0:32:400:32:43

We had him do the whole shebang. He is now an American.

0:32:430:32:46

-..United States.

-Is better than.

-Is better than.

0:32:460:32:49

-England.

-China!

0:32:490:32:50

-What's this?

-Happy Labor Day. Come on, let's play.

0:32:500:32:55

-Come on, let's go and play ball, then.

-Let's play volleyball.

0:32:550:32:59

-How about Richie and Alex against us girls?

-Sounds good.

0:32:590:33:01

-You're going to get smashed.

-No, we're not.

0:33:010:33:04

Hey, Cari Jo, go. Sorry.

0:33:060:33:08

Whoo!

0:33:120:33:14

It's not your ball.

0:33:140:33:15

We've played volleyball for... since we were in fifth grade.

0:33:150:33:18

All of a sudden, we're playing properly now, are we?

0:33:180:33:21

All of a sudden, there's rules.

0:33:210:33:22

Till, like, ninth or tenth grade, and then we coached for two years.

0:33:220:33:26

And then we played intramurals in college.

0:33:260:33:29

You want to wallop it.

0:33:290:33:32

Ohh!

0:33:320:33:34

-Oh, it's coming back.

-Nice. I feel like I'm in Top Gun.

0:33:400:33:44

That was a beautiful pirouette.

0:33:460:33:48

I just caught the wire out the corner of my eye.

0:33:480:33:50

-Out.

-Ohh!

-What are you on about? It was out by a mile!

0:33:570:34:01

Let's play football, see how you whoop them.

0:34:010:34:04

Yeah, girl. Out.

0:34:090:34:11

That volleyball match, I was adamant that Alex and I would win.

0:34:130:34:17

I think, if we really looked at it,

0:34:190:34:22

we probably didn't do as well as we thought.

0:34:220:34:24

Oh. Oh!

0:34:280:34:30

Oh, he was so confident himself, but we definitely destroyed him.

0:34:300:34:34

-Oh, wow!

-Playing against the girls, I was really impressed.

0:34:360:34:40

They were like Olympians. They were so good.

0:34:400:34:43

You kind of forget they are in communication with each other

0:34:430:34:46

constantly, sort of subconsciously.

0:34:460:34:48

But to watch them sort of run and spike the ball

0:34:480:34:51

and stuff like that constantly, impressed.

0:34:510:34:53

Are you ready for this one?

0:34:530:34:54

They are actually pretty good, to be honest.

0:34:570:34:59

I didn't think they'd be that good!

0:34:590:35:01

-You know, Richie is a little rough.

-Kind of flailing everywhere.

0:35:010:35:04

-Kind of trips and falls and stuff.

-But he's pretty scrappy.

0:35:040:35:08

We've got to be prepared.

0:35:080:35:10

Doing pretty well. Lucky for them, we're not keeping score.

0:35:100:35:14

-Lucky for them, we are in dresses.

-Look at what we've done to them.

0:35:140:35:17

They are in the woods!

0:35:170:35:19

Are there snakes in here?

0:35:240:35:26

We played easy on them because we were in skirts and dresses.

0:35:330:35:37

And we still beat them.

0:35:370:35:38

How they get on is just totally in sync.

0:35:410:35:44

The girls probably don't feel any different towards it.

0:35:440:35:47

It is what it is.

0:35:470:35:49

They've lived with it since birth, so it's no different to them,

0:35:490:35:51

but as an outsider looking in, you tend to forget that,

0:35:510:35:54

actually, they are two separate people sharing this body.

0:35:540:35:58

Go.

0:35:580:35:59

Yes!

0:35:590:36:01

Wow! It's meant to be just a friendly game at a barbecue.

0:36:010:36:05

No, not her. She wants to just smash the life out of it.

0:36:050:36:08

My favourite moment was when Cari Jo...

0:36:080:36:10

..went up to spike the ball...

0:36:100:36:12

..and both Alex and Richie's faces were like...

0:36:120:36:15

just scared out of their minds. It was so funny.

0:36:150:36:19

And so Richie did try very hard,

0:36:190:36:21

but the girls definitely beat the boys.

0:36:210:36:23

Our best friend Elle, her family owns a cabin.

0:36:270:36:30

We've been best friends with her since high school.

0:36:300:36:33

We always go up to her cabin, play around on the water and relax.

0:36:330:36:37

We're going to swim right around here.

0:36:370:36:39

I'm Elle, and I've known Abby and Brittany

0:36:390:36:42

for eight years now.

0:36:420:36:43

I went to high school with them, we had lockers next to each other.

0:36:430:36:46

I just love you so much!

0:36:460:36:47

-BOTH SQUEAL, ELLE GIGGLES

-Elle!

0:36:470:36:50

-It's so cold, isn't it?

-RICHIE:

-It's all right once you're in.

0:36:500:36:53

-We do love swimming.

-We love being on the park too and just relaxing

0:36:530:36:57

and getting tanned and listening to music.

0:36:570:36:59

Mom put us in swimming lessons, like, right away, so...

0:37:010:37:03

-We're really good swimmers.

-And we love being in the water.

0:37:030:37:06

It's cold! ELLE LAUGHS

0:37:060:37:10

-You'll be fine!

-It's like shark cam!

0:37:100:37:13

BOTH: Agh!

0:37:130:37:15

EXCITED SQUEALING

0:37:150:37:17

It's cold!

0:37:170:37:18

'On the lake swimming, you know, something that we all

0:37:180:37:20

'take for granted once we learn when we're younger,

0:37:200:37:23

'and I suppose, in some respects,'

0:37:230:37:24

it's the same for the girls, but again, it's two separate people

0:37:240:37:27

sharing a body and they work totally in sync in everything they do.

0:37:270:37:31

-Have a diving competition.

-Go ahead.

-Who can do the most elaborate dive?

0:37:310:37:35

I rate that a two.

0:37:380:37:39

-I don't like jumping off things.

-I don't like heights.

0:37:390:37:42

I'm going to jump right off.

0:37:420:37:44

Dive!

0:37:450:37:47

Whoo!

0:37:470:37:48

One and a half points. Yeah.

0:37:480:37:51

-Whoo!

-Don't you one-and-a-half me!

0:37:510:37:54

-Are you enjoying your time on the lake?

-No, are you?

0:37:540:37:56

-Are you enjoying your time?

-I'm having a fabulous time!

0:37:560:38:00

I'm having a good time.

0:38:000:38:02

-So who's going first?

-I'll do it first, and then you can...

0:38:050:38:08

-It's up to you guys.

-You can see what to do.

0:38:080:38:10

-I don't think so. I'm going first.

-And what not to do.

-I'm going first.

0:38:100:38:14

-I've tried a wakeboard...

-Once.

-..and it was unsuccessful.

0:38:140:38:17

-We'll try it again.

-We'll try it again.

-You can do it.

0:38:170:38:20

-I don't like wakeboarding very much.

-I don't like that stuff at all.

0:38:200:38:23

Um, because we're too competitive to be bad at something.

0:38:230:38:27

I don't know about this!

0:38:270:38:28

Don't pull, I can do it myself.

0:38:280:38:31

BOTH: I hate you all!

0:38:310:38:33

-So let's go.

-Quick.

0:38:330:38:35

-No.

-Keep your knees bent.

-Oh...

0:38:370:38:40

-Ready?

-We love you.

0:38:400:38:42

ENGINE REVS

0:38:420:38:44

The first time you see them, you're just like, "Whoa!"

0:38:440:38:47

And then, you get to know them

0:38:470:38:48

and you just see how beautiful they are and so amazing,

0:38:480:38:53

how they can work together and how they have to work together

0:38:530:38:56

and some people may be like, "Oh, that's weird," but it's just...

0:38:560:39:00

It's so cool, like it's just so amazing, it just blows my mind!

0:39:000:39:05

-Wakeboard 1 and...

-Abby and Brittany 0.

0:39:050:39:08

It's hard, don't worry. It just takes practice.

0:39:080:39:12

RICHIE LAUGHS

0:39:160:39:17

Elle's a champ out there. She's very good at skiing.

0:39:170:39:20

So, she is a very good coach, cos she knows what she's talking about,

0:39:200:39:23

she knows how to critique you

0:39:230:39:24

and help you fix whatever you're doing wrong.

0:39:240:39:26

-OK, try it one more time.

-One more time?

-One more time.

-OK.

0:39:260:39:29

Gotta do it.

0:39:290:39:30

And she makes you stay out there.

0:39:300:39:32

Yeah, she does make you stay out there.

0:39:320:39:34

SQUEALING

0:39:370:39:38

LAUGHTER

0:39:380:39:40

This was our second time wakeboarding

0:39:450:39:46

and we definitely did better this time than the first time.

0:39:460:39:49

So it's a work in progress.

0:39:490:39:51

I'm hoping that I'm going to be better than you.

0:39:510:39:53

-Good luck, have fun.

-Gee, thanks!

-Yeah.

0:39:530:39:56

-Oh...

-I don't feel bad any more.

0:40:010:40:04

I think I should have kept my mouth shut.

0:40:040:40:06

Richie gave it a fair shot too. The first time was hilarious.

0:40:060:40:10

-It's just kind of trial and error.

-More error than trial, innit?

0:40:100:40:13

Such a good sport. I'd be so mad right now.

0:40:140:40:19

-You WERE so mad!

-I was mad.

0:40:190:40:21

-I got crabby.

-Brittany was not happy.

0:40:210:40:23

-Here we go. Good job.

-ALL: Yey!

-Good job.

0:40:230:40:27

We decided to have a bonfire and chill out for a little while.

0:40:270:40:30

So what are we doing? Ready to do marshmallows?

0:40:300:40:32

-You want two, Ab and Brit?

-Yeah.

0:40:320:40:34

What the hell have you done to yours?

0:40:350:40:37

-LAUGHTER

-That's properly cooked.

0:40:370:40:40

-Do you both like them that burnt?

-I didn't burn it, but I'll eat it.

0:40:400:40:45

-LAUGHTER

-Poor Brit hasn't got a choice.

-No.

0:40:450:40:47

Abby's like that, "Leave it in there longer!"

0:40:470:40:50

"We'll get food poisoning! Cook it longer, cook it through!"

0:40:500:40:53

Mm-hm.

0:40:550:40:56

Well, why don't you take it out when you want it, Brittany,

0:40:560:40:59

and take one off and then stick it back in?

0:40:590:41:00

-I got one already before she watched that.

-Yeah.

0:41:000:41:03

'We tend to forget that the girls... They don't know any different.'

0:41:030:41:07

We look at it from our point of view as sort of an individual person

0:41:070:41:11

and...and the girls, as far as they're concerned, they are...

0:41:110:41:16

That's them, the two of them, that is them.

0:41:160:41:19

Richie, when you're done, say, "I want s'more,"

0:41:190:41:21

-cos it's a s'more.

-I want s'more.

0:41:210:41:22

-'We're really glad Richie could come.

-It was fun to see him again.'

0:41:220:41:26

-You guys want another one?

-I'm good.

-No, thank you.

0:41:260:41:29

What I find about Americans is they are really, really positive, um,

0:41:290:41:33

and I think...the girls' attitude...

0:41:330:41:37

I think they have that attitude, because they are American.

0:41:370:41:40

Their outlook is very, very positive and they're not going to let,

0:41:400:41:43

you know, the fact that they are conjoined

0:41:430:41:45

stop them in anything they do. I think it's a brilliant attitude.

0:41:450:41:48

This summer's gone fast. It's been a great summer.

0:41:480:41:51

We've done a lot of travelling.

0:41:510:41:52

And it's full of transitions and stuff like that, but it's...

0:41:520:41:56

-'Definitely exciting and fun and...

-Next week...

0:41:560:41:58

'We're going to move into our house. It's going to get busy.

0:41:580:42:01

'It's going to get busy.'

0:42:010:42:02

Do you have a guitar you could play for us?

0:42:020:42:04

-Kumbaya?

-I can't play anything.

0:42:040:42:06

# Kumbaya, my lord... #

0:42:060:42:09

You sing and I'll just stamp like that, keep time.

0:42:090:42:13

LAUGHTER

0:42:130:42:15

Yey, teachers!

0:42:190:42:21

-So, we got a job.

-Which is really exciting.

0:42:210:42:24

'We are fourth and fifth grade math specialists,

0:42:250:42:29

'so we'll have two classes of math.'

0:42:290:42:32

Um, it's part-time, which is nice,

0:42:320:42:34

so we'll be kind of transitioning into the teaching world.

0:42:340:42:37

Getting the job was... Actually, it was really quick.

0:42:390:42:42

There was three interviews in one week,

0:42:420:42:44

which was pretty crazy, but it was fun.

0:42:440:42:46

-Oh!

-That could be...

-A fun mat!

0:42:460:42:49

'After Cari Jo found out she got a job, we decided to go

0:42:490:42:52

'shopping together to get some school supplies for our new rooms.'

0:42:520:42:56

-We need these!

-Yeah, you need...

-So do you!

0:42:560:42:58

-ABC apples!

-Yeah.

-Because we're teachers!

0:43:010:43:04

Most of our friends have got jobs.

0:43:040:43:07

Some are still in the interview process, so we're all very lucky.

0:43:070:43:10

"Includes practice for standardised test."

0:43:100:43:13

-Oh!

-And then, fractions.

-I think I'll take this.

0:43:130:43:16

-There's a lot of stuff you need...

-When you're a teacher.

-Obviously.

0:43:160:43:20

-We didn't know what we were going to need.

-Or like get.

-Or whatever.

0:43:200:43:24

-But we just went, um...

-Just to at least get started.

0:43:240:43:27

There's so much stuff! Do we really need this stuff?

0:43:270:43:30

'We've always wanted to be teachers, since we were little, I think.'

0:43:300:43:33

'Um, we played school and would give them like worksheets

0:43:330:43:36

and then, corrected them and, um...

0:43:360:43:39

We like the organisational part of being a teacher.

0:43:390:43:42

-Oh, it's a grade book!

-And lesson plans.

-And lesson plans.

0:43:420:43:45

'When they were five, I remember'

0:43:450:43:46

one wanted to be a pilot and one wanted to be a dentist

0:43:460:43:49

'and that was short-lived.'

0:43:490:43:51

-A pointer?

-It's expected.

0:43:510:43:53

-"Don't you do that!"

-In my classroom!

0:43:530:43:55

LAUGHTER

0:43:550:43:56

But since, you know, their young teens, I think

0:43:560:43:59

they've probably thought something along the lines of teaching.

0:43:590:44:03

Big dice! We use these in my classroom!

0:44:030:44:05

Oh, yeah, that'd be sweet! How about foam counters for math bingo?

0:44:050:44:10

'Abby wanted to do more...'

0:44:100:44:12

-Math.

-..education and I wanted to do more of the pre-primary,

0:44:120:44:16

which is, um, birth to sixth grade.

0:44:160:44:19

'If we did two separate majors, we wouldn't get done in four years.'

0:44:190:44:22

-BOTH: So...

-We had to find a compromise

0:44:220:44:24

and math is changeable, so...that's where we're at.

0:44:240:44:28

I'm so nervous!

0:44:280:44:30

-I'm not!

-We're, like, more excited than nervous.

0:44:300:44:32

But I am nervous as well, just cos it's like this is a huge transition.

0:44:320:44:36

Well, if you get it, you win a prize.

0:44:360:44:38

Give 'em a reason to show up every day.

0:44:380:44:40

They're fourth and fifth grade. They'd better show up every day.

0:44:400:44:43

-Now it's like...

-"You earned this."

0:44:460:44:48

"You earned the spot and have to go get it" kind of thing.

0:44:480:44:51

I think it's going to go well for them,

0:44:510:44:53

because they've just always had

0:44:530:44:55

'a knack with kids and kids have always kind of been drawn to them.

0:44:550:45:00

'You know, maybe it started by curiosity,

0:45:000:45:02

'but then, once their simple questions were answered, they...'

0:45:020:45:05

they still just are drawn to Ab and Brit, for some reason.

0:45:050:45:09

I learned today that the biggest number is googolplex, so...

0:45:090:45:12

'We're really excited just to start, like,

0:45:120:45:15

'this new teaching stuff with Cari Jo.

0:45:150:45:17

'We can, like, talk through our days and, like,

0:45:170:45:19

'bounce ideas off each other and get advice.'

0:45:190:45:22

It's just someone to relate to and who's doing the same thing you are,

0:45:220:45:25

so it'll be nice that we're together and doing that.

0:45:250:45:28

I don't know. I am so nervous and overwhelmed.

0:45:280:45:30

I mean, the closer it gets, the more nervous I am.

0:45:300:45:33

-It's just, like, we're ready for it to be here.

-Yes.

0:45:330:45:36

-We're tired of waiting. We're ready to do it.

-Ready for the next thing.

0:45:360:45:39

Whoo-hoo!

0:45:390:45:41

BOTH: Thank you!

0:45:410:45:43

Oh, my gosh!

0:45:430:45:44

The first day of school's coming up and we needed to get

0:45:490:45:52

some lesson planning done to be prepared for the kids.

0:45:520:45:55

-20 ounce ice with a shot of caramel, please.

-Yeah, absolutely.

-Thank you!

0:45:550:45:59

-We went to a nearby coffee shop...

-To get some work done.

0:45:590:46:03

-There you go.

-Thank you.

-You're welcome. That'll be right out.

-OK.

0:46:030:46:06

OK, let's go to the back.

0:46:060:46:08

-What are you doing here?

-How are you guys?

0:46:100:46:12

BOTH: Good! How are you?

0:46:120:46:14

And we ran into our favourite teacher!

0:46:140:46:17

-What's up?

-Not much.

0:46:170:46:19

-'He was our teacher in high school.

-Our English teacher.'

0:46:190:46:23

-He was definitely...

-Definitely our favourite teacher from high school.

0:46:230:46:27

And probably the reason we want to be teachers.

0:46:270:46:29

-I've heard about your new job.

-BOTH: Yeah!

0:46:290:46:31

So are you nervous about, er, teaching or not?

0:46:310:46:34

-I have bad dreams.

-Bad dreams?

-BOTH: Yeah!

0:46:340:46:37

That the kids are going to be, like, running around everywhere.

0:46:370:46:40

-You'll always have to deal with stuff.

-Yes.

-They'll try it

0:46:400:46:43

and they're going to test you that way.

0:46:430:46:45

-There's two of us.

-That's true.

0:46:450:46:47

-How's that going to work?

-Double or nothing.

-Have you figured out

0:46:470:46:50

-how you're going to discipline with the two of you?

-Yeah!

0:46:500:46:53

-Full force right at 'em!

-Ha-ha!

0:46:530:46:55

-I thought you might be the full force one.

-No, I am.

-You are?

0:46:550:46:58

-Brittany's so mean.

-Really?

-Yeah!

0:46:580:47:00

-That I would not have guessed.

-The quiet one.

0:47:000:47:02

How are you going to teach things?

0:47:020:47:04

-We did, like, a "What did you like about Abby and Brittany?"

-Yeah.

0:47:050:47:08

And they said they liked when we talked at the same time.

0:47:080:47:11

Sometimes, that will work and sometimes that won't with the kids.

0:47:110:47:14

-But you'll do it.

-I'll just rock it.

-I'm not worried about that.

0:47:140:47:17

-I'll be calling you.

-Help me! Help me!

-And I'll answer.

0:47:170:47:21

-You can't do math.

-Oh, I won't help!

-Oh, shoot!

0:47:210:47:23

-A cellphone calculator.

-Yeah!

-That's the best I can offer.

0:47:230:47:27

-I told you, math's not important.

-It is!

-It's reading...

-I can read.

0:47:270:47:31

-It's ready and speaking.

-You can't read!

-Oh, I can read.

0:47:310:47:34

-Not very well, she can't.

-She can, but she had you to rely on.

0:47:340:47:37

-She did!

-Who knows better than us, right?

-Yeah, exactly.

0:47:370:47:40

But you still passed her.

0:47:400:47:42

-I didn't want to have Brit another year!

-Oh...that's so...

-Ha-ha!

0:47:420:47:45

I didn't want to take it another year.

0:47:450:47:47

And let's be honest, it'd be really hard to pass one and not the other.

0:47:470:47:51

BOTH: I know, it'd be awful!

0:47:510:47:52

-Someone would have to feel bad.

-But you'd like having me another year.

0:47:520:47:55

-I'm the good one!

-You are the hard worker of the bunch.

0:47:550:47:58

He was a hard teacher, really hard, and never accepted anything

0:47:580:48:01

-but the best.

-And I think that was...

-Great for us.

-Because it, er,

0:48:010:48:05

motivated us to do well, knowing he was a hard grader and so, um,

0:48:050:48:09

his high standards pushed us to meet his high standards.

0:48:090:48:13

Best advice I got when I first started teaching was,

0:48:130:48:15

"Keep your mouth shut, listen to everybody who knows better and then,

0:48:150:48:19

"as you get better at it and you understand what's going on,

0:48:190:48:23

"then you can kind of take off."

0:48:230:48:24

'He's an experienced teacher and someone we look up to,

0:48:240:48:27

'so we take what he says to heart and run with it.

0:48:270:48:31

'So we got a job in a school just north of the city.

0:48:330:48:36

'School's going to be starting in a few days,

0:48:360:48:39

'so we have the weekend'

0:48:390:48:40

to move and get settled,

0:48:400:48:41

'so we decided to paint one day and then move in the next.'

0:48:410:48:45

-Ooh, nice!

-We have a couple of things, so I need a new bedspread.

0:48:450:48:49

-'Tammy is...

-One of our mom's best friends. She's helped us before'

0:48:490:48:53

with painting, so we asked her and we also asked Erin.

0:48:530:48:56

-They leave all these curtains?

-Yeah.

0:48:560:48:58

-I love the convenience of this.

-It's really nice if they left it.

0:48:580:49:01

I really want a new bedspread, like, purple.

0:49:010:49:05

Now I have purple!

0:49:050:49:06

-Perfect!

-I know!

-It just all works out!

0:49:060:49:10

-I know, right?

-With your first pay cheque.

0:49:100:49:13

Oh, there comes the reality of it all.

0:49:130:49:16

I said she accustomed us to use her money for 22 years.

0:49:160:49:20

I think it has to be, like, a slower process...

0:49:200:49:23

until...until we're married.

0:49:230:49:25

I said that we're their responsibility until marriage.

0:49:250:49:28

-LAUGHTER

-No.

0:49:280:49:30

No. I'm getting you health insurance.

0:49:300:49:33

-Hey, help us.

-Actually, that's huge.

0:49:330:49:34

LAUGHTER

0:49:340:49:36

Everyone was moving in that day and we were all excited

0:49:450:49:48

-to be living together again...

-And have our own place again.

0:49:480:49:51

The goal is to carry as much as you can.

0:49:510:49:53

-Oh, this is not that heavy. How are you doing?

-Good.

0:49:530:49:58

Oh, it is? Whose is it?

0:49:580:50:00

Oh...

0:50:000:50:01

THEY SQUEAL

0:50:090:50:12

Hold on! Go like this.

0:50:120:50:15

OK, OK, hold...

0:50:150:50:17

-Got it.

-Good.

0:50:180:50:19

Phew!

0:50:190:50:21

Cari Jo, I honestly can't get this.

0:50:210:50:24

THEY SQUEAL

0:50:240:50:26

OK, you can just set it down anywhere.

0:50:260:50:28

That chair maybe in the corner right there.

0:50:320:50:36

And then you could kind of make this

0:50:360:50:37

-into a living area with the two couches.

-Yes!

0:50:370:50:39

OK, is that where the TV's going to go? I'm handling...

0:50:390:50:43

Yeah, and then it's...

0:50:450:50:47

-Oh, my gosh!

-Where's the thing for this light going to go?

0:50:500:50:53

It was a long day and we're all very tired,

0:50:530:50:55

but we finally got moved in and settled and unpacked.

0:50:550:50:58

SO sick of unpacking!

0:50:580:51:00

We decided to go to our classroom and start putting stuff together,

0:51:030:51:06

kind of getting it set up to feel a little bit more homey.

0:51:060:51:09

Have this be a little spot...

0:51:120:51:14

This is so cute.

0:51:150:51:17

'We really had fun at this interview process.'

0:51:190:51:23

The first one was a phone call from Mr Good, the principal.

0:51:230:51:28

They came to our school

0:51:280:51:30

and sat on the table with myself

0:51:300:51:32

and four other teachers,

0:51:320:51:33

and after the interview,

0:51:330:51:34

I ushered the girls out to the front door

0:51:340:51:36

and I came back into the room and before I even sat down,

0:51:360:51:41

one of the people said, "Run after them, hire them, give them the job."

0:51:410:51:46

Felt like we connected well with the staff

0:51:460:51:48

and it was just really good.

0:51:480:51:49

It was a good interview. A good fit for us.

0:51:490:51:52

There were, like, I think 175 applicants for the job

0:51:520:51:55

that we did indeed hire them for.

0:51:550:51:57

I was looking for a very excellent candidate, and they had all that.

0:51:570:52:00

Obviously their exuberance, their math knowledge,

0:52:000:52:03

their ability to problem solve.

0:52:030:52:05

Just their excitement.

0:52:060:52:08

I like fourth and fifth grade,

0:52:080:52:09

because I think they're more independent,

0:52:090:52:11

and their personalities are, like,

0:52:110:52:12

starting to come out a lot more and I think that's really fun.

0:52:120:52:16

It was kind of uncharted territory.

0:52:160:52:18

And so that's why I called...

0:52:180:52:20

"Hello, HR, what can we do? How does this all work?"

0:52:200:52:22

And so forth, and we did have a meeting with them. I mean, HR did.

0:52:220:52:26

Just to kind of determine how they were going to deal with...

0:52:260:52:29

cos the reality is they are starting to work for teacher retirement.

0:52:290:52:34

We have two contracts, but we're only part-time,

0:52:380:52:41

so obviously we don't get full salary.

0:52:410:52:43

But, um, what they're doing is just splitting it in two

0:52:430:52:45

and giving me half and Brittany half, so right now, that's good.

0:52:450:52:49

-Hello!

-Hey, ladies! How are you doing?

0:52:540:52:57

-Good! How are you?

-Good!

-What do you think?

0:52:570:52:59

-Oh, I think you're ready for students right now.

-All right!

0:52:590:53:02

-I'm excited.

-Yeah?

0:53:020:53:03

-I can't wait.

-Yeah, well, it's coming along here.

0:53:030:53:06

-I know!

-Well, OK, I just wanted to stop by and say hi.

0:53:060:53:09

-Thank you!

-If you have any questions, don't hesitate.

0:53:090:53:12

You've got my email and phone and stuff

0:53:120:53:14

-and don't hesitate.

-Absolutely.

0:53:140:53:17

Hey, well, take care.

0:53:170:53:19

-See you later.

-Bye!

-Bye!

0:53:190:53:21

OK!

0:53:210:53:23

SHE KNOCKS ON DOOR

0:53:350:53:38

Good morning!

0:53:380:53:41

Girls! Happy first day of school!

0:53:410:53:45

The first day of school finally arrived,

0:53:450:53:48

and we were so prepared and ready.

0:53:480:53:50

We were excited about it. We could barely sleep the night before.

0:53:500:53:53

-There's coffee for you.

-This is so weird!

0:53:530:53:55

'We're, like, really bad at, like,

0:53:550:53:57

'just laying down and falling asleep.'

0:53:570:53:59

Normally, Abby falls asleep first

0:53:590:54:01

and then I fall asleep shortly after.

0:54:010:54:03

What time is it? Like, nine?

0:54:030:54:05

It's nine-something.

0:54:050:54:06

Probably should get ready to go, huh?

0:54:060:54:09

-Are you excited?

-Yeah!

0:54:090:54:11

We don't have to be at school until ten o'clock,

0:54:110:54:14

so we can sleep in a bit, which is nice.

0:54:140:54:15

-I hope you have a good outfit picked out.

-Oh, we do!

0:54:150:54:17

-It's going to look fab.

-First day, you need to make good impressions.

0:54:170:54:20

OK, well, let me get dressed before I come out.

0:54:200:54:23

We're so excited to start.

0:54:230:54:25

We've been planning and preparing for a long time.

0:54:250:54:27

We're ready to get there and get the kids and get started.

0:54:270:54:30

It'll be fun to start teaching,

0:54:310:54:36

because we've been preparing for it for a long time.

0:54:360:54:38

'What I like about Ab and Brit is they don't let the dust settle.'

0:54:410:54:44

They're always on to the next thing.

0:54:440:54:47

You know, we all have things in our life that we wish weren't,

0:54:470:54:52

but they've just decided to work with what they've got and they do.

0:54:520:54:57

And they do a very good job.

0:54:570:55:00

Ta-da!

0:55:000:55:02

'I've learned so much from Brit and Abby,'

0:55:020:55:04

and I think a huge thing is being grateful for what you have

0:55:040:55:07

and just learning how to work together

0:55:070:55:09

and just being sisters in a really beautiful way.

0:55:090:55:11

Together, they're just...they're always encouraging one another,

0:55:180:55:21

like, if one person doesn't want to do their work or something,

0:55:210:55:25

it's like, "Come on, we're almost done. We can do it.

0:55:250:55:27

"Let's just push through this last part."

0:55:270:55:29

I feel like as they've matured individually,

0:55:320:55:34

as they have grown into more of a mature outlook on life,

0:55:340:55:37

they've really kind of grown together

0:55:370:55:40

and I can say probably without a doubt

0:55:400:55:42

that they love who each other are.

0:55:420:55:43

Right, let's go!

0:55:430:55:46

I don't think there's anything that they won't try

0:55:460:55:48

or something they couldn't be able to do if they really wanted to.

0:55:480:55:52

And to bring that to children,

0:55:520:55:53

especially kids who might be struggling, that's very special.

0:55:530:55:57

That's learned through lived example.

0:55:570:55:59

I think we just take things day by day, as things come.

0:56:050:56:07

We aren't looking forward to, like, ten years down the road.

0:56:070:56:11

We want to do well and we want to learn and grow as a teacher.

0:56:110:56:15

OK, we're heading out!

0:56:150:56:16

-Have a good first day!

-Thank you!

0:56:160:56:19

-I can't wait to hear about it!

-I can't wait to tell you!

0:56:190:56:22

-I love you!

-I love you!

0:56:220:56:24

-See you later!

-Have fun! Don't be nervous!

0:56:240:56:26

-Have a good time.

-Bye!

-Bye!

0:56:260:56:29

'Like every mom would hope for,'

0:56:300:56:32

you want them to be successful

0:56:320:56:34

and to be happy and healthy

0:56:340:56:36

as they're being successful.

0:56:360:56:38

And that's what I want.

0:56:380:56:39

We're excited to continue our teaching career

0:56:410:56:44

and see where life takes us, whether that be moving somewhere

0:56:440:56:48

or doing something new or just whatever, we're excited.

0:56:480:56:52

Let's do it! Here we go!
