If you and your partner needed a fresh start in life,

0:00:020:00:04

how far would you go to achieve it?

0:00:040:00:07

Could you give up everything you had at home to move

0:00:070:00:10

to the other side of the world?

0:00:100:00:13

Two years ago, Andrea and Stan Baum faced just that decision.

0:00:130:00:17

Today, we'll find out what happened next.

0:00:170:00:20

Andrea and Stan had always dreamt of moving to Australia

0:00:210:00:24

but in 2011, everything changed.

0:00:240:00:28

Stan had an accident

0:00:280:00:29

and that basically blew our whole world into pieces.

0:00:290:00:33

Desperate for a new beginning, in 2013,

0:00:340:00:37

the couple spent an emotional trial week in Brisbane.

0:00:370:00:40

You know, to have this opportunity would be amazing.

0:00:400:00:44

So, two years later, is it the UK or Australia Stan and Andrea call home?

0:00:440:00:50

This is where we need to be at this stage right now in our life.

0:00:500:00:53

Over 30 times the size of the UK and with breathtaking beaches,

0:01:170:01:21

amazing architecture and a rich and diverse culture,

0:01:210:01:24

Australia has been referred to as the biggest playground in the world.

0:01:240:01:28

And with a population of just 23 million people,

0:01:280:01:31

there's plenty of space for new arrivals.

0:01:310:01:34

But for many, the move is far from straightforward.

0:01:340:01:37

In 2013, after an incredibly challenging few years,

0:01:390:01:44

Andrea and Stan Baum spent a week in Brisbane discovering

0:01:440:01:48

if Australia really could offer them a second chance at life.

0:01:480:01:52

Today, two years on, we'll discover where in the world

0:01:520:01:56

Andrea and Stan now call home.

0:01:560:01:58

The Baums original journey to Brisbane in eastern Australia

0:02:010:02:04

began with a gruelling 22.5 hours on a plane.

0:02:040:02:07

And when they touched down on Aussie soil,

0:02:110:02:14

the distance from the UK had really hit home.

0:02:140:02:17

I'm like, "Oh, yeah, it's just Australia, just Australia."

0:02:170:02:19

But actually...it's really far!

0:02:190:02:21

Having arrived down under for the first time,

0:02:230:02:25

the couple were excited about what lay ahead.

0:02:250:02:28

Just the anticipation to see if it's viable.

0:02:280:02:31

You know, if it's possible to be able to live over here comfortably.

0:02:310:02:35

I need to make an informed choice of whether or not

0:02:350:02:39

we can financially live the dream that we want to live.

0:02:390:02:42

In the UK, Stan, a former motor mechanic

0:02:480:02:50

and Andrea, a nurse, were living in Loughborough in Leicestershire.

0:02:500:02:54

But Andrea was hoping they wouldn't be there much longer.

0:02:540:02:57

The Oz dream is kind of my little baby.

0:02:570:03:01

I've wanted to go since I can remember.

0:03:010:03:05

She's always said, right from the start, she wants to go to Australia.

0:03:050:03:09

We've had our five-year plan and we were working towards it.

0:03:090:03:13

But tragedy had struck in 2011

0:03:150:03:18

when Stan was involved in a horrific motorbike accident.

0:03:180:03:21

Six months after we got married, Stan had an accident.

0:03:240:03:29

Um, and that basically blew our whole world into pieces.

0:03:290:03:34

The last thing I kind of remember was the start of September 2010,

0:03:340:03:40

which was when we got married.

0:03:400:03:42

And I barely remember even getting married.

0:03:420:03:45

Stan had quite a significant brain injury

0:03:450:03:50

and broke pretty much every bone in his body.

0:03:500:03:55

Literally from his head down to his toes.

0:03:550:03:59

Stan spent six months in a coma.

0:03:590:04:02

His loved ones were told to expect the worst but Andrea

0:04:020:04:05

and Stan's sister Mel had refused to give up on him.

0:04:050:04:08

I don't know what gave me the hope.

0:04:080:04:10

Don't know what gave me the strength.

0:04:100:04:12

I can't believe that I put my family through this.

0:04:140:04:17

I said, "He will come back, I know he will."

0:04:170:04:19

And I said, "I don't believe it and I won't believe it." And...he did.

0:04:190:04:24

You know, and he came back to us and we've pushed him and motivated him.

0:04:240:04:29

Against all odds and with his family's support,

0:04:340:04:37

Stan had begun to recover.

0:04:370:04:39

The early part of my recovery was quite...

0:04:440:04:48

Well, it was painful trying to do the physio.

0:04:480:04:51

Even trying to learn to walk again.

0:04:510:04:53

Stan can now get himself up, washed, dressed,

0:04:530:04:58

tie his own shoelaces, making me cups of tea.

0:04:580:05:02

You know, it's having to learn to do everything again.

0:05:020:05:05

Stan's rehabilitation was taking time

0:05:070:05:09

but the couple were determined to look towards a happier future.

0:05:090:05:13

Moving, however, would mean sacrificing relationships

0:05:130:05:16

with the family and friends who'd supported them through their ordeal.

0:05:160:05:21

The thought of moving without them

0:05:210:05:23

is really upsetting and heartbreaking.

0:05:230:05:25

I needed their support more than actually I realised

0:05:250:05:28

I needed at the time.

0:05:280:05:29

So, it meant the world and I'm indebted to them for life.

0:05:300:05:33

Despite strong emotional ties, Andrea and Stan were desperate

0:05:330:05:37

to put the past behind them and start afresh in Australia.

0:05:370:05:41

It's where Andrea definitely wants to be and...

0:05:410:05:45

Well, I'm just hoping that it's going to be good for us.

0:05:460:05:51

We're literally going to be leaving everything behind

0:05:510:05:54

to try and start a new life again and start a new chapter, a new book.

0:05:540:05:59

So, it's literally everything. Everything is on the line.

0:05:590:06:04

Stan and Andrea had been through incredibly tough times

0:06:120:06:16

but were determined to see if Australia could offer them

0:06:160:06:18

the opportunities and lifestyle they were dreaming of.

0:06:180:06:22

For their trial week,

0:06:220:06:23

they stayed in a two-bedroom apartment in Brisbane city centre.

0:06:230:06:27

It was their first taste of Aussie-style living

0:06:270:06:30

and first impressions were good.

0:06:300:06:31

-Look at the view!

-Wow.

0:06:330:06:35

Oh, my God!

0:06:360:06:37

Height is not one of my specialities but you know what?

0:06:370:06:41

-I'll learn to love it.

-Amazing.

-Amazing, absolutely amazing.

0:06:410:06:44

Amazing, yeah.

0:06:440:06:46

If this was what we could afford, I'd suffer in silence.

0:06:460:06:49

Ha-ha!

0:06:490:06:51

Which would make a change.

0:06:510:06:52

-SHE LAUGHS

-Yeah, big change.

0:06:520:06:54

Back in the UK, home for Stan and Andrea

0:07:040:07:07

was a three-bedroom detached house in Loughborough.

0:07:070:07:09

So what kind of Australian home were they looking for?

0:07:090:07:13

Just something relatively modern, very simplistic.

0:07:130:07:17

-You don't want people overlooking it.

-Two toilets, pretty please.

0:07:170:07:22

Whether that's two bathrooms or just two toilets, I am not fussy.

0:07:220:07:26

We showed the couple three houses,

0:07:290:07:31

based on what they thought they could afford,

0:07:310:07:33

what they ideally wanted, and one in between.

0:07:330:07:35

First up was a four-bedroom bungalow in the suburb of Springfield Lakes,

0:07:370:07:41

an up-and-coming area just 35 minutes drive

0:07:410:07:44

from Brisbane city centre,

0:07:440:07:45

which could offer good value for money.

0:07:450:07:49

-There's the garage.

-That looks amazing.

-Yeah.

0:07:490:07:52

-SHE GASPS

-Oh, sorry.

0:07:530:07:55

It's all right.

0:07:550:07:56

-Look how scary you are.

-I'm just testing.

0:07:580:08:01

Ex-mechanic Stan had caught sight of the garage from the road.

0:08:020:08:06

-But what did he make of it inside?

-Beautiful.

-This is...

0:08:060:08:10

-I've found my room.

-Yeah!

0:08:100:08:13

Next up, the kitchen. How did that compare?

0:08:130:08:17

Our kitchen back home is...a little bit bigger.

0:08:170:08:21

But it's all kind of closed in. So, this feels bigger.

0:08:210:08:26

With four bedrooms and two bathrooms,

0:08:260:08:28

the house should have ticked all the boxes.

0:08:280:08:30

But not everything was quite to their taste.

0:08:300:08:33

Some of the tiles and some of the decor is a little bit...

0:08:330:08:36

-Just the colours.

-Yeah, a little bit dated.

0:08:360:08:39

-Luckily, the garden fared better.

-Love the garden.

0:08:390:08:43

-Love, love, love the garden.

-Lovely size.

-Yeah.

0:08:430:08:47

It was a good note to end on

0:08:470:08:49

but was the house within the couple's budget of around £250,000?

0:08:490:08:53

I don't want to know.

0:08:530:08:54

-Do you want me to turn?

-Yeah.

0:09:020:09:03

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:09:040:09:07

-That's actually quite surprising.

-Yeah.

0:09:070:09:09

-Yeah, that is. I thought it'd be actually over.

-Yeah, I did.

0:09:100:09:13

It was an encouraging start for Stan and Andrea.

0:09:130:09:16

But with two more properties to view,

0:09:160:09:18

they weren't committing to anything.

0:09:180:09:21

Staying in Springfield Lakes,

0:09:210:09:23

property two was one of the area's most populous streets.

0:09:230:09:27

With lakes, parks and sporting facilities on the doorstep,

0:09:270:09:30

it could have been a great base for Stan's rehabilitation.

0:09:300:09:33

But did it offer the space they wanted?

0:09:330:09:35

It...looks a bit...

0:09:370:09:40

squished.

0:09:410:09:42

-It's got this flat driveway.

-I know.

-So, you won't fall.

0:09:420:09:48

First impressions? Not bad.

0:09:480:09:50

-And inside...

-Yeah.

0:09:500:09:51

-Doesn't look so much size at all from the front.

-Yeah.

0:09:510:09:56

But it's actually quite spacious in there.

0:09:560:09:58

The house had the two bathrooms Andrea wanted.

0:10:000:10:03

-Very nice. Good size.

-Look at the shower.

-New, user-friendly.

0:10:060:10:11

-I really like this.

-Wow, yeah!

0:10:110:10:13

-Look at the design.

-Yeah.

-Beautiful.

-It flows.

0:10:130:10:17

And I think that's the beauty of this house. It just...flows.

0:10:170:10:21

Every room flows from one to the other.

0:10:210:10:23

-It's brilliant for Stan's mobility.

-The property scored well.

0:10:230:10:26

And with four bedrooms, it also had plenty of room for visitors.

0:10:260:10:30

Really nice. Ooh, got a walk-in wardrobe!

0:10:300:10:33

I reckon it's going to be way over our budget. But, you know...

0:10:330:10:37

..the dream. It's something to work towards.

0:10:390:10:41

Andrea was already thinking of ways to make it work

0:10:410:10:44

but the garden proved a disappointment.

0:10:440:10:48

It's quite overlooked, actually.

0:10:480:10:49

-Yeah.

-I must admit I'm not a fan of the garden.

0:10:500:10:54

The property had promised so much

0:10:540:10:56

but the lack of outside space was a big letdown.

0:10:560:10:59

Was the price enough to make the couple reconsider?

0:10:590:11:02

OK. Ready?

0:11:020:11:03

£260,000.

0:11:050:11:07

-Yeah.

-You used to be able to get a lot more for your money.

0:11:080:11:12

And with the current exchange rate and everything else,

0:11:120:11:16

it makes things a lot tighter.

0:11:160:11:18

At £10,000 over budget,

0:11:190:11:21

the house didn't appear to be worth the stretch.

0:11:210:11:23

Last property of the day was a four-bedroom house in Redland Bay,

0:11:310:11:34

a laid-back suburb just over 30 miles south-east of Brisbane.

0:11:340:11:39

The property promised modern interiors

0:11:390:11:41

but would it offer better value for money?

0:11:410:11:43

-We can't afford this.

-No!

0:11:450:11:47

-I think...

-This is going to be the carrot and the stick.

0:11:470:11:49

-Way out of our budget.

-Yeah.

0:11:490:11:51

They've been shocked by the cost of the properties so far,

0:11:510:11:53

but this house had an immediate impact.

0:11:530:11:56

-I'm speechless.

-Without words.

-Yes.

-Without words.

0:11:560:11:58

For the first time, I'm actually...

0:11:580:12:00

-Yeah.

-..speechless.

0:12:010:12:03

And the best was yet to come.

0:12:040:12:06

The property had access to facilities

0:12:060:12:08

that could help Stan's recovery.

0:12:080:12:10

Oh, my God! Stan, it's a gym!

0:12:120:12:16

And a fitness centre! It's got a tennis court down there.

0:12:180:12:21

Oh, my God! Oh, my God.

0:12:210:12:24

Oh, my... I don't know what to say.

0:12:270:12:29

-OK?

-Yeah! I'm OK.

0:12:320:12:35

It was an emotional moment as the couple realised

0:12:410:12:44

just what this could mean for Stan.

0:12:440:12:47

Just having that access.

0:12:470:12:49

It would make his life easier.

0:12:500:12:53

As well.

0:12:540:12:57

It has been like...

0:12:570:12:58

It has been two years since...while I've been like this.

0:12:580:13:01

And...what I've had to put through with the family and everybody.

0:13:020:13:07

But they've all been so supportive.

0:13:070:13:09

I won't need to convert the house.

0:13:100:13:12

We won't have to pay for gym equipment, we could just...

0:13:120:13:15

Yeah. It would just help him out.

0:13:180:13:21

He worked really hard.

0:13:230:13:25

-TEARFULLY:

-He did work really hard to get better and it would just...

0:13:250:13:29

I feel like an idiot, sorry. Could you hold on?

0:13:290:13:32

SHE SOBS

0:13:330:13:35

Yeah, it does.

0:13:350:13:36

When you've heard the doctors and they didn't even think

0:13:430:13:46

I'd wake up, let alone be able to walk, you know, and use this arm.

0:13:460:13:51

You know, so... Everything has been a challenge but it's been worth it.

0:13:510:13:56

You know, and... You know, to have this opportunity would be amazing.

0:13:570:14:03

Andrea knew if they could afford a property like this,

0:14:030:14:06

any move would be life-changing.

0:14:060:14:09

If I could, I would work...

0:14:090:14:10

..till my bones ache to provide it.

0:14:130:14:15

With so much resting on it, the pair were reluctant to see

0:14:200:14:23

how close the property was to their £250,000 budget.

0:14:230:14:27

Part of me doesn't actually want to know what that says.

0:14:270:14:30

-You ready?

-No.

0:14:330:14:35

SHE LAUGHS

0:14:410:14:43

Well...

0:14:480:14:49

It was over budget but by just £17,000.

0:14:520:14:56

So depending on job prospects, it could still have been within reach.

0:14:560:15:00

Where do we sign on?

0:15:000:15:02

-SHE LAUGHS

-Yeah! Yeah!

0:15:020:15:04

It had been an emotional day of house-hunting for the Baums.

0:15:060:15:09

The first property was smaller than they wanted

0:15:140:15:16

but they had loved the garden.

0:15:160:15:18

Property two had more space but the overlooked garden left them cold.

0:15:180:15:23

Property three wasn't just a dream house, it offered Stan access

0:15:230:15:27

to potentially life-changing facilities.

0:15:270:15:30

So, based on what they'd seen of Australian homes...

0:15:320:15:35

It is time for us to vote.

0:15:350:15:38

Did the couple choose property in the UK or Australia?

0:15:380:15:41

-Australia.

-Australia.

0:15:490:15:51

Finding a house with a gym, that is, you know,

0:15:520:15:57

an unbelievable, you know, option for us to try.

0:15:570:16:01

It was literally like we'd won the lottery when we saw the gym.

0:16:010:16:05

Because I just thought of all the things that Stan could do

0:16:050:16:09

to progress and that was really...really special.

0:16:090:16:13

As the sole earner and with her heart set on a house

0:16:160:16:19

that could change Stan's life,

0:16:190:16:21

Andrea was now feeling the pressure to find a job with a decent salary.

0:16:210:16:25

Back home, she was a deputy sister in the A & E department

0:16:260:16:29

at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

0:16:290:16:32

Finding something similar in Australia was pivotal.

0:16:320:16:35

The job's got to be right. Not just from the financial point of view.

0:16:350:16:38

I mean, that has definitely got to be right.

0:16:380:16:40

Former mechanic Stan wanted to return to work

0:16:400:16:43

and had been taking steps to make that happen.

0:16:430:16:46

I've been told that I can't be a mechanic.

0:16:460:16:49

So, I've thought about pushing myself to be a teacher of mechanics.

0:16:490:16:54

To get an idea of her work prospects and shift patterns,

0:16:560:16:59

Andrea got a tour of a private hospital

0:16:590:17:02

by fellow emergency room nurse and expat Dana Brown.

0:17:020:17:05

-What hours do you work?

-Do a 38-hour week. We have 12-hour shifts here.

0:17:070:17:12

You can do eight-hour shifts.

0:17:120:17:14

Stan meanwhile met a teacher at a further education college

0:17:140:17:18

to find out if teaching mechanics was a realistic option.

0:17:180:17:21

It's been nice being back here because it kind of reminds me

0:17:220:17:25

of, like, when I was a mechanic.

0:17:250:17:27

As he got reacquainted with the smell of diesel,

0:17:270:17:31

Andrea met with the hospital's

0:17:310:17:32

director of learning and development, Donna Bonney,

0:17:320:17:35

to find out if work existed in Brisbane

0:17:350:17:37

and how much she could earn.

0:17:370:17:39

At the moment, probably wouldn't be

0:17:390:17:41

as many employer-sponsored visas in the big cities.

0:17:410:17:46

Maybe a better option is to go with a recruitment agency.

0:17:460:17:49

Given your years of experience,

0:17:490:17:51

you'd be bringing home an average of 85,000.

0:17:510:17:55

-This is about double my wage.

-Yes.

0:17:550:17:57

Wow! I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

0:17:570:18:00

It was a brilliant result for Andrea.

0:18:010:18:03

But were Stan's qualifications transferable?

0:18:030:18:06

To start, you're at least going to need your Certificate IV

0:18:060:18:08

in training and assessment.

0:18:080:18:10

-At the moment, I'm classed as disabled.

-Mm-hm.

0:18:100:18:14

-Would that affect me being able to work?

-Definitely not.

0:18:140:18:18

There's teachers here already with disabilities

0:18:180:18:21

and loving it, it's great.

0:18:210:18:22

How much would you think I'll be able to earn as a teacher?

0:18:220:18:25

As a fully qualified teacher,

0:18:250:18:27

you should be looking at around 85,000 a year.

0:18:270:18:31

Yeah, that is really good.

0:18:310:18:33

-Excellent, sounds like something up your alley then.

-Definitely.

-Yeah.

0:18:330:18:36

That was a real incentive for Stan to get back into employment.

0:18:360:18:40

It had been an encouraging day for the couple

0:18:400:18:43

but was that enough to choose work in Australia?

0:18:430:18:46

-Australia.

-Australia.

0:18:510:18:54

-You want to stay here?

-Yes, I do.

0:18:560:18:58

It's exciting. Nerve-racking.

0:18:580:19:00

I didn't think I would like it as much as I did.

0:19:000:19:03

The facilities for training was beyond what I expected,

0:19:030:19:06

beyond what I had when I was at school.

0:19:060:19:09

And the wages as well, amazing.

0:19:090:19:13

And it would make a big difference to us, me working as well.

0:19:130:19:17

It seemed like Stan and Andrea

0:19:290:19:30

could earn enough to afford their dream house.

0:19:300:19:33

But with Stan's rehabilitation a priority, it was important

0:19:330:19:37

to discover if the Aussie lifestyle would meet their needs.

0:19:370:19:40

It's absolutely fab.

0:19:400:19:41

After exploring the city, the couple met Joe,

0:19:470:19:50

a local physiotherapist,

0:19:500:19:51

to see if Brisbane could offer Stan

0:19:510:19:53

the same level of support he had at home.

0:19:530:19:56

Our life is wrapped pretty much around Stan, his physio

0:19:570:20:01

-and getting him back to as good as he's ever going to get.

-Yeah, good.

0:20:010:20:05

-There's a charity called Headway.

-Headway.

0:20:050:20:07

-We have the same in Australia as well.

-Oh, do you?

-Yeah.

0:20:070:20:10

-Oh, that's useful.

-They're based at the Gold Coast.

0:20:100:20:12

We've got excellent, excellent neuro rehab service in Australia.

0:20:120:20:15

It had been an enlightening day.

0:20:180:20:20

So did the couple believe Australia could give Stan

0:20:200:20:23

the lifestyle he needed?

0:20:230:20:24

-Australia.

-Australia.

0:20:280:20:30

So the whole point about us moving

0:20:320:20:34

this far away from friends and family is for Stan

0:20:340:20:38

and what rehabilitation we've got an offer.

0:20:380:20:40

And just a general lifestyle that Australia could offer both of us.

0:20:400:20:44

Before Stan's accident, biking had been a real passion for the couple.

0:20:550:20:59

-And it was a hobby they were raring to get back to.

-Hi, Stan.

0:20:590:21:03

-I'm Jason, how are you going?

-Hello, Jason.

-Hi, I'm Anneka.

-Cool.

0:21:030:21:07

They met up with a group that rode three-wheeled motorbikes

0:21:070:21:10

built for speed and stability, popular with disabled users.

0:21:100:21:14

-Looking to getting back on a bike?

-Definitely.

-Good to hear.

0:21:160:21:20

It was a big day for Stan.

0:21:270:21:28

The first time he had got back on a motorbike since his accident.

0:21:280:21:32

Seeing Stan on the bike is fantastic.

0:21:340:21:37

-Amazing experience, to be on the bike again.

-It made our day.

0:21:370:21:41

-We put a smile on both your faces. What more could we want?

-Yeah!

0:21:410:21:46

For Stan and Andrea,

0:21:460:21:47

it had been yet another glimpse of the life they could lead down under.

0:21:470:21:50

The couple had discovered Australia could potentially give them

0:21:550:21:58

everything they'd ever wanted and more.

0:21:580:22:01

But they needed to know if they could actually afford to live there.

0:22:010:22:05

With Andrea the sole earner,

0:22:050:22:07

any increase in bills could have spelled disaster for the move.

0:22:070:22:11

Comparing their cost of living in Australia with the UK,

0:22:110:22:14

they based their calculations on the dream house.

0:22:140:22:17

This is when it comes down to it because...

0:22:170:22:20

..on our mortgage per month, we'd be £520 worse.

0:22:230:22:26

Because it's...

0:22:270:22:28

The Australian property is more expensive than ours.

0:22:280:22:31

The electricity here is a lot higher, it's £133 extra per month.

0:22:310:22:37

Our total monthly outgoings, we're £1,000 worse off.

0:22:370:22:42

But if Andrea found the job she wanted,

0:22:430:22:45

she could potentially earn almost £30,000 more than at home.

0:22:450:22:49

So, was that enough to deflect the hit?

0:22:490:22:52

At the end of the month, we are £496 better off.

0:22:570:23:02

-This is just on your wage?

-That's just on my wage.

0:23:040:23:08

-That is unbelievable.

-Yeah.

0:23:080:23:09

So, had the figures been good enough to swing another vote for Australia?

0:23:120:23:16

-I think it's time for a vote. Are you ready?

-I think so.

-OK, go.

0:23:160:23:19

-England!

-RECORD SCRATCHES

0:23:290:23:30

I'm only joking. Australia!

0:23:300:23:32

-You got me by surprise there.

-SHE LAUGHS

0:23:350:23:37

-I didn't want to be too predictable.

-We want to start a family together.

0:23:370:23:42

You know, I want to progress. I want to get back to work.

0:23:420:23:47

And it makes it all so very possible.

0:23:470:23:50

It looked like Australia could deliver the fresh start

0:23:550:23:57

Andrea and Stan so desperately wanted.

0:23:570:24:00

But there was one major obstacle still to overcome

0:24:000:24:03

as they faced leaving the friends and family

0:24:030:24:05

that had supported them through their darkest times.

0:24:050:24:08

-Are you ready for this?

-No, but let's do it.

0:24:090:24:12

Hi, guys! How are you doing?

0:24:140:24:16

-Hello!

-Hello, Auntie Andrea.

0:24:160:24:18

Andrea, she's a... I'd say a very hard-working career girl.

0:24:180:24:24

Heart of gold.

0:24:240:24:25

Is Auntie Andrea nice? Do you like to play with Auntie Andrea? Yes.

0:24:260:24:31

Well, the accident was horrendous. And...

0:24:310:24:36

I know, you know, we didn't think Stan was going to pull through.

0:24:360:24:39

One day, when they were moving him to the brain injury unit

0:24:390:24:42

and I was holding his hand, he had his eyes open.

0:24:420:24:45

I said to him, I just went, "Don't be scared." I said, "I know...

0:24:450:24:50

"I know where you are, it's dark and you're scared. But don't be scared."

0:24:500:24:54

I said, "Just come back to us,"

0:24:540:24:55

because I said, "They're giving up on you."

0:24:550:24:57

And I said, "I won't give up on you as long as you come back."

0:24:570:25:01

Andrea, she just found the inner strength

0:25:010:25:04

and carried on and carried on and she was determined

0:25:040:25:06

she wasn't going to lose Stan.

0:25:060:25:08

To see him progress from not being able to move them arms,

0:25:080:25:11

told he would use that arm again.

0:25:110:25:13

And to be able to use that arm again, move the arm.

0:25:130:25:15

Now he's walking again, he's talking good. It's just amazing.

0:25:150:25:20

Touched my heart, he is a legend.

0:25:200:25:21

I always say he's a legend but he is a legend.

0:25:210:25:24

-MAN:

-I think if they go, it will have an impact on

0:25:240:25:27

quite a lot of their family and friends because I think...

0:25:270:25:30

they...they're loved by everybody, to be honest.

0:25:300:25:34

It's just very difficult.

0:25:360:25:37

You know, she's not just going to be just up the road.

0:25:400:25:42

She's going to be miles away.

0:25:420:25:44

SHE SOBS

0:25:470:25:49

I just want her to be happy and Stan to be happy. But...

0:25:490:25:53

You know, I don't want them to go that far away.

0:25:560:25:58

That was worse than I thought. Just seeing how much they're hurting.

0:26:070:26:14

All because I want to move to the other side of the world

0:26:140:26:18

and I feel quite selfish for that.

0:26:180:26:20

-Most difficult part was seeing my sister.

-Hmm.

0:26:200:26:23

She is so strong, isn't she?

0:26:260:26:28

It's just really bad for her, the accident.

0:26:290:26:33

Like how all the family and my friends

0:26:330:26:35

all pulled together regardless.

0:26:350:26:38

You know, it's hard to see that they were upset again.

0:26:380:26:43

Hmm. I don't think you fully comprehend

0:26:430:26:46

the impact that you'll have.

0:26:460:26:48

I don't think you can't...

0:26:480:26:49

You can, because if you did, nobody would ever move.

0:26:490:26:52

Watching messages from loved ones was a heartbreaking experience

0:26:550:26:59

for Andrea and Stan.

0:26:590:27:00

But their week in Australia had given the couple a glimpse

0:27:000:27:03

of what they could possibly gain.

0:27:030:27:05

So, did the final turn of the cards

0:27:060:27:08

see them choose life in the UK or Australia?

0:27:080:27:11

-Are you ready?

-Ah, yes, I'm ready.

-OK.

0:27:130:27:15

-Australia.

-Australia!

0:27:260:27:28

This week, I've found... Wow! It's just blown my mind, actually.

0:27:290:27:33

Definitely surpassed my expectations.

0:27:330:27:35

-The future's bright and sunny.

-Future's looking good, yeah.

-Yeah?

0:27:350:27:38

With their trial week in Brisbane convincing Stan and Andrea

0:27:470:27:51

they could make the fresh start they'd been hoping for,

0:27:510:27:53

it looked like a move to the other side of the world was imminent.

0:27:530:27:57

When we caught up with them a year ago,

0:27:570:27:59

plans of their new life were being put into place.

0:27:590:28:02

Andrea had managed to secure a job in Australia

0:28:020:28:05

but unfortunately not in the city she'd fallen in love with.

0:28:050:28:08

Finding a job in Brisbane was non-existent. There isn't any.

0:28:090:28:14

We've had to look at different areas and have now got a job in Melbourne.

0:28:140:28:17

So not quite where we wanted to be originally

0:28:170:28:21

but, you know, it's a new place, a new challenge.

0:28:210:28:23

It's meant to be the most liveable city in the world.

0:28:230:28:26

With the job secured,

0:28:260:28:27

all the couple needed was to gain that all-important visa.

0:28:270:28:31

And after a three-month wait,

0:28:310:28:32

they'd finally been put out of their misery.

0:28:320:28:36

All of a sudden, she squealed.

0:28:360:28:38

And I went, "Whoa, what's wrong? What's up?" And I just...

0:28:380:28:41

I just thought something really bad happened to her,

0:28:410:28:43

she'd hurt herself or something.

0:28:430:28:45

And she says, "We got the visas!" She was so chuffed!

0:28:450:28:48

It was like everything was falling into place.

0:28:480:28:50

With their house on the market and flights booked,

0:28:500:28:54

all that remained was to get packing.

0:28:540:28:56

But for Stan, getting his tools ready was quite a task.

0:28:560:28:59

If you think I've been collecting since I was 18 years old.

0:29:030:29:06

It's a lot of years, that is.

0:29:060:29:08

Get up at 8.00 in the morning

0:29:080:29:09

and then I'm in the garage cleaning tools until about...

0:29:090:29:13

Well, I get told about 10.00 at night.

0:29:130:29:15

It's got to be pretty immaculate, you know.

0:29:150:29:17

It's got to look like brand-new before

0:29:170:29:19

they'll accept it in Australia.

0:29:190:29:21

Stan and Andrea couldn't wait to start their new life down under.

0:29:260:29:29

But leaving the friends and family who had supported them

0:29:290:29:32

through incredibly tough times was still a daunting prospect.

0:29:320:29:36

It's your safety net, if you like.

0:29:360:29:38

And then all of a sudden, you're leaving that.

0:29:380:29:41

They've been so supportive, you know.

0:29:410:29:43

They do everything they can for me.

0:29:430:29:45

Part of me feels guilty in the fact that I am pushing this.

0:29:450:29:48

We're ripping both of us away from everything

0:29:480:29:50

that we've ever known and loved and had.

0:29:500:29:52

Maybe I shouldn't be so selfish but it's something that I have to do.

0:29:520:29:55

I know this is her dream. And it's become my dream as well.

0:29:560:30:02

I'm going to grab it with both horns and go for it.

0:30:020:30:05

After the upset and trauma of the past few years,

0:30:060:30:09

the couple were finally in a position to look

0:30:090:30:11

to their future with hope and anticipation.

0:30:110:30:14

Oh, I can't wait! Oh! Can't wait!

0:30:140:30:18

I don't care where it is.

0:30:180:30:20

As long as we're together, that is all I care about.

0:30:200:30:23

It had been a year full of upheaval for Stan and Andrea,

0:30:260:30:30

with potential heartache ahead as they prepared to make the move.

0:30:300:30:34

So, 12 months later, have the couple finally achieved

0:30:340:30:39

a fresh start on the other side of the world?

0:30:390:30:42

It's 2015 and the Baums are living in...

0:30:430:30:48

Australia!

0:30:480:30:49

But the dream life down under got off to a very shaky start.

0:30:500:30:54

First couple of weeks were hard. It was really hard.

0:30:560:30:59

Um, harder than I thought.

0:30:590:31:02

Saying goodbye to family and friends

0:31:030:31:05

proved tougher than the couple could ever have imagined.

0:31:050:31:08

We've gone through a couple of challenging times.

0:31:080:31:11

Um, but that was...

0:31:110:31:13

For me, that was the hardest thing I've ever done.

0:31:130:31:16

The Baums touched down in Melbourne in May 2014

0:31:160:31:19

but Andrea was soon struggling in the city that had never been

0:31:190:31:22

her first choice for a move.

0:31:220:31:24

Melbourne is meant to be the most liveable city in the world

0:31:240:31:27

and it's a very pretty city and there's lots of things for it.

0:31:270:31:31

But it just wasn't for me.

0:31:310:31:32

The couple's new life on the other side of the world

0:31:320:31:35

wasn't off to the best of starts.

0:31:350:31:37

Did not feel settled at all.

0:31:370:31:39

I'd kind of already got it in my head, you know, we need to...

0:31:390:31:43

..eventually move up to Queensland.

0:31:430:31:45

Stan was a little bit more, "No, let's stick it out, see how we go.

0:31:450:31:48

"You might really love it down here."

0:31:480:31:50

But I know in my heart of hearts, I wouldn't.

0:31:500:31:52

It just didn't feel like home.

0:31:520:31:54

I didn't feel the same as Andrea. I was optimistic.

0:31:540:31:58

I have to look at things, you know, in a more positive attitude.

0:31:580:32:01

And I always look at the better side of life than the worst.

0:32:010:32:05

Because we've had the worst already, you know.

0:32:050:32:08

So, that's how I can move forward, really.

0:32:080:32:11

Despite Stan's optimism,

0:32:110:32:13

Andrea felt so low just after two weeks, she was on the phone

0:32:130:32:17

begging her dad to book them a flight back to the UK.

0:32:170:32:20

I said to my dad, "I need you to book me a flight,

0:32:220:32:25

"I need you to get me home. I need you to get me home now.

0:32:250:32:28

"I'm unhappy, I don't like it, it doesn't feel right.

0:32:280:32:31

"I need to be home now."

0:32:310:32:32

Andrea and myself both knew it wasn't right.

0:32:320:32:36

But it was an opportunity, it was the first step into Australia.

0:32:360:32:41

Andrea's dad talked her into sticking it out.

0:32:430:32:45

But when the couple took a trip north to visit a friend,

0:32:450:32:48

Andrea was more convinced than ever Queensland was where her heart lay.

0:32:480:32:52

I don't know, as soon as I stepped off the plane,

0:32:530:32:56

it was a bizarre feeling.

0:32:560:32:57

I don't know, I can't explain it.

0:32:570:32:59

But it just felt like I was home, this is where I belong,

0:32:590:33:02

this is where I need to be.

0:33:020:33:04

Determined to make the move work, in his own search for employment,

0:33:040:33:07

Stan had also been applying for Brisbane-based jobs

0:33:070:33:11

on Andrea's behalf.

0:33:110:33:12

She asked me one day just to apply for a few jobs, which I did.

0:33:120:33:16

And lo and behold, she got offered a job.

0:33:160:33:19

For the second time in a matter of months,

0:33:200:33:22

the couple were uprooting once again.

0:33:220:33:25

It was the easiest flight I've ever done, ever.

0:33:260:33:29

I was literally packed...two days before we flew up.

0:33:290:33:34

Everything we packed, everything we loaded in the car the night before

0:33:340:33:37

and we were gone.

0:33:370:33:38

Now living 20 minutes north of Brisbane,

0:33:390:33:42

the couple's home is a rented property in a gated community.

0:33:420:33:45

With an on-site gym and communal pool, it's perfect for Stan's needs.

0:33:450:33:50

It was a bit of a godsend, to be honest, having the gym.

0:33:500:33:53

Because that's the one thing that I was looking at.

0:33:530:33:56

We knew that we couldn't afford to buy the equipment.

0:33:560:34:00

We actually paid just a fraction extra just to have the facilities.

0:34:000:34:04

But they are so worth it.

0:34:040:34:06

The house may not be everything Andrea dreamed of...

0:34:060:34:09

I don't like the fact that we live in what I would call Legoland,

0:34:090:34:13

everything is exactly the same.

0:34:130:34:15

I don't like how thin the walls and the glass is

0:34:150:34:19

because you can hear everything.

0:34:190:34:21

But it does have one important feature.

0:34:210:34:24

Having more bathrooms is better.

0:34:240:34:27

We have a laundry room.

0:34:270:34:29

That's my job.

0:34:310:34:32

And then we see a downstairs toilet, which is convenient for...

0:34:330:34:38

-Especially with Andrea.

-Hey!

0:34:380:34:40

While downstairs is slightly smaller than they'd like,

0:34:400:34:43

upstairs has plenty of room and...

0:34:430:34:46

We have our communal bathroom.

0:34:460:34:48

We've got a shower unit, bath and a sink. Then we've got a toilet.

0:34:480:34:53

This is our second toilet.

0:34:530:34:55

And yeah. Andrea loves the toilet.

0:34:560:34:59

There's also space for visiting friends and family.

0:35:020:35:05

This is our spare room. It's got a balcony. Beautiful view out there.

0:35:050:35:10

This is our second spare bedroom.

0:35:110:35:15

Basically, this is where I do all the ironing.

0:35:150:35:18

And finally, we have our room.

0:35:200:35:23

We have got our own en-suite as well.

0:35:230:35:26

And yes, you guessed it.

0:35:260:35:28

Third toilet.

0:35:280:35:29

Andrea is going to view that one really well.

0:35:310:35:33

What more could a girl want?

0:35:330:35:34

Stan's delighted with the new home for his beloveds tools.

0:35:360:35:41

We've got our garage which we can keep the car in.

0:35:410:35:45

And also all my tools, which really is amazing

0:35:450:35:49

considering in the UK, you struggle to even fit your car in.

0:35:490:35:54

Although the house is a good fit for the couple, it is remote.

0:35:550:35:59

Meaning a trip to the shops can be a challenge for Stan.

0:35:590:36:02

I think the first time I tried to do it, it took me two hours.

0:36:040:36:07

And the second time, just after a bit of training,

0:36:070:36:11

it took me an hour and 40 minutes, wasn't it?

0:36:110:36:14

To walk there, literally try and get what we wanted,

0:36:140:36:17

which wasn't there, and then walk straight back.

0:36:170:36:20

But walking in the Aussie sunshine has worked wonders

0:36:200:36:24

for Stan's rehabilitation.

0:36:240:36:26

Since we've been over here, my mood, my emotions improve no end.

0:36:260:36:31

I'm training quite well.

0:36:310:36:33

You know, I think even though

0:36:330:36:34

my weight's dropped down to about 10st,

0:36:340:36:37

I'm feeling a lot fitter, a lot better.

0:36:370:36:39

Making a massive difference.

0:36:390:36:41

Andrea has settled in well to her new job.

0:36:420:36:45

I'm currently working in a private emergency department in Brisbane.

0:36:450:36:50

She's been impressed with the hospital's working practices.

0:36:500:36:54

It's the time factor.

0:36:540:36:55

You actually have time to care for your patient, which is nice.

0:36:550:36:59

And that's not the only plus.

0:36:590:37:02

The money is a massive bonus.

0:37:020:37:03

I earn double my wage compared to what I did in the UK.

0:37:030:37:07

While Andrea is at work, Stan's keeping busy too.

0:37:070:37:10

I clean the house, top to bottom,

0:37:100:37:13

make sure it's as clean and tidy as possible.

0:37:130:37:15

Then I will go to the gym, I'll do my training at the gym.

0:37:150:37:20

I come back to the house, probably do a little bit more trailing.

0:37:200:37:23

So, that takes up a couple of hours in itself. And then I prepare food.

0:37:230:37:29

You know, make sure dinner is ready if we're eating that night.

0:37:290:37:33

And then finally, apply for jobs.

0:37:330:37:37

That is my day.

0:37:370:37:38

Though Stan's job hunt for Andrea was a success,

0:37:400:37:42

his own search for work has been more frustrating.

0:37:420:37:46

I've been applying for so many jobs

0:37:460:37:49

and I've been looking mainly at using my skills, you know,

0:37:490:37:54

as a mechanic to help me with getting employment elsewhere.

0:37:540:37:59

Like a service advisor, parts, something like that.

0:37:590:38:04

Something where I can use the skills that I've got.

0:38:040:38:07

He's constantly on the phone chasing potential work opportunities.

0:38:070:38:12

I'm rehabilitating myself all the time.

0:38:120:38:14

No problem at all, thank you very much.

0:38:150:38:18

Definitely, will do. Thank you.

0:38:180:38:19

Bye.

0:38:210:38:22

Yeah, I've even looked into teaching as well.

0:38:220:38:24

But at the minute, the problem is

0:38:240:38:27

employers only see me as a liability.

0:38:270:38:31

You know, a risk for them.

0:38:310:38:33

-Shall we have a wander?

-Yes. Where are we going?

0:38:330:38:35

You can tell me about it. Come on, then.

0:38:350:38:38

It's been eight months of a struggle, yes.

0:38:380:38:42

I just feel bad for Stan

0:38:420:38:43

because this whole move was about opportunities and things.

0:38:430:38:47

And there are lots of opportunities, it's just getting the right one.

0:38:470:38:50

But he'll find it. I've got no doubt, he'll find it.

0:38:500:38:53

He's having a bit of time off. He's adjusting to Australian lifestyle.

0:38:530:38:57

I just feel, you know, it's a challenge.

0:38:570:39:00

All of it, everything that I've had to do, it's all a challenge.

0:39:000:39:05

Just got to find that right person.

0:39:050:39:07

While there's only one wage coming in,

0:39:090:39:11

more money in Andrea's pay packet means the couple can afford to

0:39:110:39:15

make the most of their new-found free time.

0:39:150:39:17

When we were in the UK, we just didn't do anything.

0:39:170:39:21

Andrea worked a lot of the time and then because she worked so hard,

0:39:210:39:26

when she was home, she just wanted to chill.

0:39:260:39:29

So, it is a big change being out here.

0:39:290:39:31

I've been trying to save up just to kind of have a bit of a backup.

0:39:340:39:38

Because we didn't have hardly any money at all in England

0:39:380:39:41

and I've got...

0:39:410:39:42

We have a little bit more disposable cash here.

0:39:420:39:45

Not a lot but it's enough to put into savings

0:39:450:39:48

and pay for a nice holiday.

0:39:480:39:50

Really want to go to Fiji.

0:39:500:39:51

And it's not just holidays on the to-do list.

0:39:540:39:57

Stan and Andrea have kept in touch with the biker group

0:39:570:39:59

from their trial week.

0:39:590:40:01

They're great, absolutely great.

0:40:020:40:04

Stan was such an inspiration to us when we first met him.

0:40:040:40:08

Now it's just been awesome to see the way he's handled himself

0:40:080:40:12

and got himself up and going.

0:40:120:40:13

One of our aims is to try and get him riding a Can-Am Spyder soon.

0:40:140:40:18

Once I get working again,

0:40:200:40:22

I wanted to look at buying an automatic one

0:40:220:40:24

so I can get back to driving again.

0:40:240:40:26

-No.

-No, no!

-The couple have found it easy making new friends.

0:40:270:40:31

My new work colleagues, they're really friendly as well

0:40:310:40:34

and we've gone out a couple of times.

0:40:340:40:37

There are groups that you can go, so if you're a movie buff,

0:40:370:40:40

there's a movie group.

0:40:400:40:42

There's walking groups, there's expat groups, there's...

0:40:430:40:48

There's all sorts.

0:40:480:40:50

So is there anything Andrea and Stan miss about the UK?

0:40:500:40:54

I definitely don't miss the weather.

0:40:550:40:57

You know. Um, I don't...

0:40:570:41:00

I miss the cars, I suppose.

0:41:000:41:02

Miss the rain, don't you?

0:41:020:41:04

-That's what you miss about the UK.

-Yeah, the wind and the rain!

0:41:040:41:08

The snow, the cold... No. I actually miss my old work.

0:41:080:41:12

I don't miss the bitching and moaning

0:41:120:41:14

on the way back from your work.

0:41:140:41:15

-It's just because I was busy.

-Stress relief.

-Yeah, I moan at you anyway.

0:41:150:41:20

Deal with it. You married me.

0:41:200:41:21

The move down under may have had its teething problems...

0:41:230:41:26

Looking back, the move was stressful, intense.

0:41:260:41:31

Took more out of me than I thought it would.

0:41:310:41:35

It was tough. I didn't expect it to be an easy move at all.

0:41:370:41:42

I expected it to be tough.

0:41:420:41:44

And it's been everything that I have expected.

0:41:440:41:46

But Andrea and Stan are adamant it was the right thing to do.

0:41:470:41:51

I don't regret moving. I did at the time.

0:41:520:41:55

I was like, "I'm going home, I just want to be back with my family,

0:41:550:41:58

"I want to be back where my comfort zone is."

0:41:580:42:01

But now we've been here coming up to a year,

0:42:010:42:05

I've got no regrets in moving. I've got no...

0:42:050:42:08

This is where we need to be at this stage right now in our life.

0:42:080:42:12

I think moving has been the best thing I've done so far.

0:42:120:42:17

I mean, it's quite hard missing out on family life.

0:42:170:42:22

But in myself, I feel it has been the best move.

0:42:220:42:25

So, are the couple living the dream life they've chased for so long?

0:42:260:42:30

This is my dream.

0:42:300:42:31

A few little tweaks that I need to make but that's just comes in time.

0:42:310:42:35

I'm living A dream.

0:42:350:42:38

Not my ideal dream because...

0:42:380:42:42

I need to be working.

0:42:420:42:44

I need to be working back on cars, I need to be riding bikes.

0:42:440:42:48

Doing the stuff I loved before.

0:42:480:42:51

I've just got to keep getting stronger, getting better

0:42:510:42:54

and I will, you know, end up living my dream.

0:42:540:42:58

Having overcome many obstacles and hurdles in pursuit of their dream,

0:43:010:43:06

Andrea and Stan now look poised to enjoy a very rosy new life

0:43:060:43:10

on the other side of the world.

0:43:100:43:12

We wish them a happy and well-deserved future together.
