Travelling in your teens often leaves you

0:00:020:00:04

with a sense of wanderlust, longing for a life in the sun.

0:00:040:00:08

But is it really possible to make the dream your reality years later,

0:00:080:00:13

when you've three children in tow

0:00:130:00:15

and a husband who's far from convinced?

0:00:150:00:18

That was the question Julie Rutland needed answered in 2015.

0:00:180:00:23

One year on, we'll find out where the family are now.

0:00:230:00:28

In 2015, Julie Rutland longed to move her family to Australia.

0:00:290:00:34

I just want to try. I want to follow my dream.

0:00:340:00:37

With a visa already in place,

0:00:370:00:39

she had just one obstacle to clear.

0:00:390:00:42

The only thing that is stopping us is me.

0:00:420:00:46

A trial week opened Dan's eyes to the possibilities...

0:00:460:00:50

If we could afford this house...you've got me in Australia.

0:00:500:00:53

So, one year on, have the family made it

0:00:530:00:56

to the other side of the world?

0:00:560:00:58

Making plans and then sticking to them religiously is, I think,

0:00:580:01:03

heading for disaster because life isn't like that.

0:01:030:01:05

Covering a landmass of almost three million square miles,

0:01:290:01:32

Australia's been hailed a land of opportunity

0:01:320:01:35

ever since the first European settlers arrived back in the 1700s.

0:01:350:01:39

Promising sunshine, beaches and a strong economy,

0:01:390:01:42

the attraction shows little sign of easing up, with latest figures

0:01:420:01:46

showing over 28% of the country's population is born overseas.

0:01:460:01:51

Julie Rutland was on a mission to convince husband Dan

0:01:530:01:56

Australia was where their family belonged.

0:01:560:01:59

However, never having set foot in the country,

0:01:590:02:03

he worried his wife's vision of life down under

0:02:030:02:06

was based entirely on rose-tinted memories.

0:02:060:02:10

Julie had just one week to persuade him,

0:02:100:02:13

once and for all, her dream was one worth chasing.

0:02:130:02:16

The week begins with over 17 hours in the sky,

0:02:170:02:21

flying from London to Australia via Dubai.

0:02:210:02:23

And when they finally land in Perth,

0:02:260:02:28

Julie admits she's thrilled to be back down under.

0:02:280:02:31

I thought I was going to go pop.

0:02:320:02:34

I just can't wait to show them all the beach, the weather,

0:02:340:02:37

the lifestyle and the houses,

0:02:370:02:39

and I think they're all really excited to see it.

0:02:390:02:41

We want to see the new house!

0:02:410:02:43

But after the epic journey,

0:02:430:02:45

there's only one word to sum up how Dan's feeling.

0:02:450:02:48

Tired. I'm feeling very, very tired. It was a long journey.

0:02:480:02:52

Willow agrees.

0:02:520:02:54

I'm tired because I didn't get any sleep.

0:02:540:02:57

But nothing's going to dent Julie's enthusiasm.

0:02:570:03:00

It wasn't that bad!

0:03:000:03:01

I had all three children and you were happily sat there.

0:03:010:03:05

-How many films did you get to watch?

-SHE LAUGHS

0:03:050:03:07

Now she's finally got them here, Julie will need to try harder

0:03:070:03:11

if she's to convince Dan to start a new life

0:03:110:03:13

on the other side of the world.

0:03:130:03:15

Meet the Rutlands, from Bicester in Oxfordshire.

0:03:170:03:20

They're dad Dan,

0:03:200:03:22

mum Julie, nine-year-old Zack,

0:03:220:03:25

six-year-old Willow and five-year-old Faye.

0:03:250:03:28

On the whole, life's good,

0:03:290:03:30

but Julie's still reminiscing about time spent in Australia 15 years ago.

0:03:300:03:36

It's got so many wonderful memories.

0:03:360:03:38

I was travelling with two of my best friends.

0:03:380:03:40

We were young, we bought a camper van in Darwin

0:03:400:03:42

and we travelled all round Australia,

0:03:420:03:44

and then we settled in Bondi,

0:03:440:03:47

and, you know, we lived a few roads back from Bondi Beach,

0:03:470:03:49

which was just beautiful.

0:03:490:03:52

Julie reluctantly returned to the UK to go to university,

0:03:520:03:55

and met Dan soon after.

0:03:550:03:57

I suaved into a nightclub, swooped Julie off of her feet

0:03:580:04:02

and that was the end of the story.

0:04:020:04:05

Julie's version of it is probably a little bit different.

0:04:050:04:08

Dan's charm soon bowled Julie over

0:04:080:04:11

and when she secured a job in Formula One,

0:04:110:04:14

the couple moved to Bicester.

0:04:140:04:16

Since becoming parents, Julie's parked her career

0:04:160:04:18

and Dan works as a carpenter.

0:04:180:04:20

But with her previous experience down under,

0:04:200:04:23

Julie dreams of a better life in Australia.

0:04:230:04:26

It's just about the lifestyle, really.

0:04:260:04:29

Go, go. Oh, be careful there, Willow!

0:04:290:04:31

I would just love to live by a beach, a beautiful, sandy beach.

0:04:310:04:34

I just want the children to be able to go for walks,

0:04:340:04:37

and I love the sporty lifestyle.

0:04:370:04:39

We're such an outdoors family.

0:04:390:04:41

Moving to the other side of the world

0:04:420:04:44

wasn't something Dan had ever considered.

0:04:440:04:46

I think the way you brought it up was,

0:04:460:04:48

-"Why don't we move to Australia?"

-LAUGHING:

-Probably.

0:04:480:04:51

Danny got home from work, and I said to him, "I've had a great idea",

0:04:520:04:55

and he looks at me and rolls his eyes and says,

0:04:550:04:58

"Oh, no, not another one."

0:04:580:04:59

But Julie's determined to make her husband take her seriously,

0:04:590:05:03

and has even secured a visa for the family to emigrate.

0:05:030:05:06

The children are on board.

0:05:060:05:08

All she needs to do now is convince Dan it's the right move.

0:05:080:05:11

The only thing that is stopping us is me.

0:05:140:05:18

Erm, I am the brick wall.

0:05:180:05:19

Desperate to demolish Dan's doubts,

0:05:190:05:22

Julie's applied for jobs for him online,

0:05:220:05:24

and knowing how much he loves fishing,

0:05:240:05:26

she's even tried to reel him in with the promise of a boat.

0:05:260:05:30

JULIE LAUGHS

0:05:300:05:31

Just a little bit, mate. It was just a splash.

0:05:310:05:33

Yeah, I might have hinted that he could have a little boat,

0:05:330:05:36

just a little boat, if he moved near the sea.

0:05:360:05:40

But Dan's not rising to the bait.

0:05:400:05:43

I just wonder whether she's looking through rose-tinted glasses.

0:05:430:05:47

Can we afford to move to Australia? Jobs?

0:05:470:05:50

Obviously with the heat, can you work in the heat?

0:05:500:05:53

Will I be able to earn the same money?

0:05:530:05:55

There's a lot of questions that need answering.

0:05:550:05:58

Dan's also worried about the emotional cost of moving.

0:05:580:06:01

Extremely close to his dad, he's torn at the thought

0:06:010:06:05

of leaving him on his own.

0:06:050:06:07

My dad has always been there for me, without fail, and I think now,

0:06:080:06:12

maybe, at the age Dad is, it's my turn to be there for him.

0:06:120:06:16

If something happened to my dad while I was the other side, I...

0:06:190:06:24

I'd never forgive myself.

0:06:240:06:26

Yeah.

0:06:280:06:30

Julie does understand Dan's emotional ties

0:06:300:06:33

and worries about the impact leaving her own family will have, too.

0:06:330:06:38

I know it will break my mum's heart. I know it will.

0:06:380:06:41

SHE SNIFFS

0:06:410:06:42

And I know it'll break both my sisters' hearts as well.

0:06:420:06:46

SHE SOBS QUIETLY

0:06:460:06:47

SHE SNIFFS

0:06:500:06:52

It makes me feel really selfish.

0:06:520:06:54

Driven by her desire to show Dan and the children the lifestyle

0:07:000:07:04

she truly believes will benefit them,

0:07:040:07:06

and having invested so much time and money into getting a visa,

0:07:060:07:10

Julie's desperate for the chance to make her dream their reality,

0:07:100:07:14

and the next seven days will be her best chance to do it.

0:07:140:07:18

This week in Australia is really finding out about whether the dream

0:07:180:07:21

that Jule has got is achievable for us, whether it's worth moving

0:07:210:07:25

to the other side of the world for and leaving what we've got here.

0:07:250:07:30

I can almost feel it and I really want it for the children

0:07:300:07:33

and I really want it for us and I just want to try.

0:07:330:07:38

I just want to try. I want to follow my dream.

0:07:380:07:41

To find out if Australia's where their future lies,

0:07:480:07:52

the family are visiting Western Australia's capital city, Perth.

0:07:520:07:55

Their base for the week is in Halls Head,

0:07:550:07:58

a costal suburb just over an hour's drive from the city.

0:07:580:08:01

But will Australian living be as good as Julie remembers?

0:08:010:08:05

-Wow, look at that.

-That looks very grand, doesn't it?

0:08:090:08:11

Look at the sea!

0:08:110:08:13

Wow!

0:08:130:08:14

That's a proper sea view.

0:08:140:08:16

Despite the dull day,

0:08:160:08:18

Julie is delighted with the beachfront location.

0:08:180:08:22

Wow.

0:08:220:08:23

Now, this is the type of place I would love to live.

0:08:230:08:26

-You should've married a millionaire.

-DAN AND JULIE LAUGH

0:08:260:08:28

Back inside, Dan admits he's impressed, too.

0:08:310:08:34

Very, very nice. Very, very nice.

0:08:340:08:36

Yeah.

0:08:360:08:38

Julie casts her mind back to when she last lived in Australia.

0:08:380:08:42

I think there was three of us in a bedroom with bunk beds

0:08:420:08:45

and one bathroom for eight people,

0:08:450:08:47

so, yeah, this is a whole, whole other world.

0:08:470:08:50

It's amazing.

0:08:500:08:51

Fuelled by excitement, the family wastes no time hitting the beach.

0:08:510:08:55

That looks all right, doesn't it? Think they like it?

0:08:560:08:59

I think they love it, don't they? Look at them.

0:08:590:09:01

They've not been here long, but the children are already sold.

0:09:010:09:04

Australia's epic!

0:09:040:09:06

I think Australia's good.

0:09:060:09:08

Finally settled in, Julie's encouraged by everything so far.

0:09:100:09:14

It's just been amazing

0:09:140:09:15

and I think the kids have taken it really well.

0:09:150:09:18

But Dan's keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

0:09:180:09:21

This house is fantastic,

0:09:210:09:23

but it's whether we can afford something like this.

0:09:230:09:26

There's just lots of things to find out.

0:09:260:09:29

Having flown over 10,000 miles,

0:09:290:09:31

he's already worried about the practicalities

0:09:310:09:34

of being so far from the people he loves back home.

0:09:340:09:37

I found it quite difficult travelling here

0:09:370:09:39

so, obviously, my dad, I don't know if he'd actually be able to do it

0:09:390:09:44

so, yeah,

0:09:440:09:46

it's sort of bittersweet at the moment.

0:09:460:09:50

The week ahead will determine whether or not Dan can buy into Julie's dream,

0:09:500:09:55

but, for now at least, she is confident things will go her way.

0:09:550:09:59

This is us finding out if this is what we actually want to do

0:09:590:10:02

for the rest of our lives

0:10:020:10:03

so it's got to be amazing

0:10:030:10:06

and I think it will be.

0:10:060:10:07

Back in the UK, the Rutlands live in a three-bedroom semidetached house

0:10:120:10:16

in Bicester in Oxfordshire

0:10:160:10:18

and they've worked hard to make it a home.

0:10:180:10:21

I would quite like to transport our house

0:10:210:10:23

-and Danny's worked really hard.

-Yeah.

0:10:230:10:25

I tell him what we're going to do and he works really hard to do it.

0:10:250:10:29

Knowing she can't take it with her,

0:10:290:10:31

Julie has a clear idea of what she'd like from a home in Australia.

0:10:310:10:35

My dream house would have four bedrooms,

0:10:350:10:40

plus a granny annexe so people could come and stay

0:10:400:10:43

and an open-plan kitchen-dining area

0:10:430:10:46

plus a swimming pool and literally practically on the beach.

0:10:460:10:49

Dan has slightly different ideas.

0:10:500:10:53

I'd like it maybe not so much on the beach.

0:10:530:10:56

For me, it'd be more a harbour

0:10:560:11:00

so that I could have somewhere to put my boat,

0:11:000:11:03

but, there again, you know, I could have a boat here,

0:11:030:11:07

but I can't afford that, either.

0:11:070:11:08

Julie and Dan have around £250,000 to spend on a home in Australia.

0:11:150:11:20

To find out what their money could buy,

0:11:200:11:22

we'll show them three properties,

0:11:220:11:24

two based on budget and the third which could be their dream home.

0:11:240:11:29

Only after they've seen each property will they find out its value.

0:11:290:11:34

It is a very nice area.

0:11:340:11:35

It is, it is. It is a nice area.

0:11:350:11:37

The search begins in Secret Harbour,

0:11:370:11:40

just 45 minutes drive from central Perth.

0:11:400:11:42

This well-established suburb

0:11:420:11:44

offers a choice of schools and recreation areas.

0:11:440:11:46

Its stunning beach location should be a further draw for Julie,

0:11:460:11:50

but will this four-bedroom house be what she's looking for?

0:11:500:11:54

Yeah.

0:11:540:11:55

-What do you think?

-Yeah, this is all right.

0:11:550:11:57

Isn't it nice?

0:11:570:11:58

Hopefully, she won't be disappointed.

0:11:590:12:02

Come on in, kids.

0:12:020:12:04

SHE GASPS

0:12:040:12:05

-Oh, wow.

-Yeah, I like it.

0:12:050:12:08

It is a bit dark, isn't it?

0:12:110:12:12

Yeah, a little bit, but I think maybe it is just quite a dark room.

0:12:120:12:15

The grey day outside probably doesn't help,

0:12:150:12:18

but will the open kitchen and living area Julie desires

0:12:180:12:21

be enough to brighten her outlook?

0:12:210:12:24

I don't know if it's kind of what I had in mind.

0:12:240:12:27

It is open-plan living,

0:12:270:12:29

but perhaps not as open-plan as I was hoping.

0:12:290:12:33

She might be the one pushing for the move,

0:12:330:12:36

but this house isn't quite what Julie's been dreaming of.

0:12:360:12:39

-A main bedroom off of a lounge area.

-It's en suite.

0:12:400:12:43

Oh, it is a nice en suite, isn't it? It's a really big one.

0:12:450:12:49

Julie soon spots potential in the other bedrooms, too.

0:12:490:12:52

I love the windows at the front.

0:12:520:12:55

-You do like a bay window, don't you?

-I do.

0:12:550:12:57

But is the room as pleasing?

0:12:570:12:59

-It's a good double bedroom for one of the kids.

-Yeah, it is good.

0:12:590:13:03

-It's a good size.

-It's actually growing on me, this house.

0:13:030:13:06

The inside may be winning Julie over,

0:13:060:13:08

but will the outside space be what they're after?

0:13:080:13:12

It is nice. I do like the outdoor area. I do like it.

0:13:120:13:15

It's very nice.

0:13:150:13:17

Dan, on the other hand, is unhappy with the fake grass.

0:13:170:13:20

It sounds like there's plastic bags underneath it, doesn't it?

0:13:200:13:23

But Julie's not concerned.

0:13:230:13:25

I can definitely see myself in a garden like this.

0:13:250:13:28

See! You've changed your mind.

0:13:280:13:29

Now the sun's come out, "Yeah, this is brilliant, yeah."

0:13:290:13:33

Julie's enthusiasm has lifted with the clouds

0:13:330:13:36

and she doesn't even mind the lack of swimming pool.

0:13:360:13:39

As long as we're near to the sea, that would be more important

0:13:390:13:42

than having a pool, but it would still have been nice.

0:13:420:13:46

The house has had mixed reactions, but the big question is

0:13:460:13:49

how much does it cost

0:13:490:13:51

and would Julie and Dan's £250,000 budget be enough to buy it?

0:13:510:13:56

Just over 200,000 or just under 200,000.

0:13:560:13:59

That's what I'd be prepared to pay for it.

0:13:590:14:01

I think it's going to be over budget.

0:14:010:14:03

I think maybe about 275.

0:14:030:14:05

If this is over budget,

0:14:050:14:06

I mean, I'm going to feel, I think, quite disappointed by it.

0:14:060:14:09

Time to turn the card and find out.

0:14:090:14:12

See what it is.

0:14:160:14:17

£254,600.

0:14:190:14:22

That is pretty much bang on our budget.

0:14:220:14:25

-That's OK.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:14:250:14:27

Are you a bit disappointed?

0:14:270:14:28

Yeah, yeah, I was hoping it was going to be less than that.

0:14:280:14:31

The first taste of Perth's property prices has been bittersweet for Dan.

0:14:310:14:35

If Julie's to convince him to make the move,

0:14:350:14:38

the next house needs to be more on the money.

0:14:380:14:41

To find out, the family head to Baldivis,

0:14:410:14:43

a rapidly expanding suburb just under 30 miles south of the city.

0:14:430:14:47

Further inland, it's a 15-minute drive from the beach,

0:14:480:14:52

but that could mean the family get better value for their money.

0:14:520:14:55

Will the house be up to spec for the Rutlands?

0:14:550:14:59

This all looks very nice.

0:14:590:15:00

I like the look of this house.

0:15:000:15:02

They're off to a good start.

0:15:020:15:04

-Straight into a bedroom.

-See, I just like this more.

0:15:060:15:10

This furnishing is a lot more

0:15:100:15:11

-like we would have in the house, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:15:110:15:13

And a walk-in wardrobe puts an even bigger smile on Julie's face.

0:15:130:15:17

Oh, look, you can put shoes in drawers. That's me sold!

0:15:170:15:20

HE LAUGHS

0:15:200:15:22

The en suite's more pleasing than the last one.

0:15:220:15:26

-Oh, this is much nicer. Look.

-Oh, yeah, this is nice.

0:15:260:15:30

-It's much more to our taste.

-Yeah.

0:15:300:15:32

It's all good so far.

0:15:320:15:34

Will the open-plan kitchen/living area

0:15:340:15:36

be in line with Julie's expectations?

0:15:360:15:39

-Oh, I love it!

-So do I.

-Yeah, it's much nicer.

-Yeah.

0:15:390:15:43

The kids could sit in the morning

0:15:430:15:45

and I could be making their packed lunch and they could all be

0:15:450:15:47

sitting there having breakfast and we're all talking at the same time.

0:15:470:15:50

That could get noisy, Julie! But Dan's got an even bigger concern.

0:15:500:15:55

This house makes me smile, but that means, to me,

0:15:550:15:57

it's going to cost even more and be out of our price range.

0:15:570:16:00

No, you don't know. It's further away from the sea.

0:16:000:16:03

The house also has a separate playroom for the children.

0:16:030:16:06

JULIE GASPS

0:16:060:16:07

Wow, this is amazing!

0:16:070:16:09

With four bedrooms, the children won't have to share.

0:16:090:16:11

And when they spot a pool in the garden, Julie can't believe her luck.

0:16:110:16:16

This house just got even better!

0:16:160:16:18

Yeah, this house just got more expensive.

0:16:180:16:20

JULIE LAUGHS

0:16:200:16:21

Oh, my God, I love it!

0:16:210:16:23

Despite his concerns about cost, Dan has to admit he's bowled over.

0:16:230:16:28

If we could afford this house...

0:16:280:16:30

you've got me in Australia.

0:16:300:16:32

SHE CHUCKLES

0:16:320:16:34

But before Julie gets too carried away,

0:16:340:16:36

the family need to see how much this house costs

0:16:360:16:39

and whether, with £250,000 to spend, they can afford it.

0:16:390:16:44

I think it's going to be around...

0:16:440:16:47

-about 270. 270, 280?

-Do you?

-Yeah.

0:16:470:16:50

I think it's going to be about 315.

0:16:500:16:53

Let's see who's right.

0:16:530:16:54

-Let's have a look.

-JULIE GASPS

0:17:000:17:03

-Oh! See, I was right.

-£262,800?

0:17:030:17:08

That's amazing! That's doable.

0:17:080:17:10

-Yeah, it is doable.

-That's just made my day.

-Yeah.

0:17:100:17:12

Yeah, it certainly hasn't ruined mine.

0:17:120:17:15

What do you think, kids? Cos we could afford that.

0:17:150:17:18

-THEY CHANT:

-Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

0:17:180:17:20

Is that a yes, then?

0:17:200:17:21

£12,000 over budget hasn't dented Julie's enthusiasm,

0:17:220:17:26

and even Dan seems content with the cost.

0:17:260:17:29

And the day's not over yet,

0:17:320:17:33

as the Rutlands head for the coastal suburb of Waikiki.

0:17:330:17:37

With shops, schools and adventure parks,

0:17:370:17:39

it's a popular area with families.

0:17:390:17:42

Based on their ideal wish list, we found what could be their dream home.

0:17:430:17:48

But will Dan and Julie agree?

0:17:480:17:50

-Well, it looks very nice, doesn't it?

-Yeah.

0:17:500:17:52

Just think how close we were to the beach! It was amazing, wasn't it?

0:17:520:17:56

Just one street back from the sea, it's a thumbs up for location.

0:17:560:18:01

Whoa! Let's have a look.

0:18:010:18:03

-Wow, it looks huge.

-Oh, it's massive!

-Wow!

0:18:030:18:06

It's not short on space, but is the style to Dan and Julie's taste?

0:18:060:18:11

This seems a bit more...

0:18:110:18:12

..a bit more homely. Maybe it's cos of the carpet.

0:18:130:18:15

Not sure if that's an advantage.

0:18:150:18:17

But moving on, the main living area isn't quite what they were expecting.

0:18:170:18:22

Oh, this is a bit different.

0:18:220:18:23

Yeah...

0:18:250:18:27

Julie doesn't sound sure.

0:18:270:18:28

I don't like the kitchen.

0:18:280:18:30

-It's not really a really big area and I don't like all the bricks.

-No.

0:18:300:18:35

With four bedrooms, on paper,

0:18:350:18:36

the house meets many of Julie's requirements,

0:18:360:18:38

but the reality isn't matching up.

0:18:380:18:42

And the master bedroom wouldn't entice Dan to make the move.

0:18:420:18:46

Soory if it's disappointing again, if this is supposed to be your main bedroom.

0:18:460:18:50

On the other ones, from the outside you think, "Oh, they're tiny."

0:18:500:18:53

-This one, you think, "It's going to be massive," and it's not.

-No...

0:18:530:18:57

Julie looks crestfallen,

0:18:570:18:59

and the dated en suite does little to lift her spirits.

0:18:590:19:03

There's so much work that you'd need to do, that I would WANT to do...

0:19:030:19:08

It'd be quicker, honestly, to knock it down.

0:19:080:19:11

The interiors of this house have failed to wow Julie and Dan,

0:19:110:19:15

but the spacious outdoor living area might just score a few points.

0:19:150:19:19

-I do really like this.

-Yeah?

0:19:210:19:23

SHE GASPS

0:19:230:19:25

-Jacuzzi?

-Oh, I'm liking it a little bit more.

0:19:250:19:27

Julie's back on form!

0:19:270:19:29

You could imagine sitting out here with a group of friends,

0:19:290:19:32

can't you, in the evening with a bottle of wine?

0:19:320:19:35

And even though it's close to the beach, it's got the pool Julie wants.

0:19:350:19:39

Well, that's a big swimming pool.

0:19:390:19:40

That's a really lovely-size swimming pool.

0:19:400:19:43

Despite earlier reservations, could this be the dream house after all?

0:19:430:19:47

-This outside bit, this bit...

-Is beautiful.

0:19:470:19:50

You know, this pool is fantastic.

0:19:500:19:53

But I still don't know whether I'd want to spend thousands doing it up.

0:19:530:19:57

I guess it depends how much it costs.

0:19:570:20:00

The jury's still out as Julie and Dan prepare to find out how much

0:20:000:20:04

they'd be paying for a house like this.

0:20:040:20:06

I think you're probably going to be looking at about 350,

0:20:060:20:09

given that you've still got four bedrooms.

0:20:090:20:11

No. No, for this...

0:20:120:20:14

-A really big pool..

-You've got four bedrooms, a big pool.

0:20:150:20:18

-Really near to the sea...

-Yeah, I think you might be right, 350.

0:20:180:20:21

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

0:20:210:20:23

I don't think you're going to be far off with that.

0:20:230:20:25

The family's budget is £250,000.

0:20:250:20:29

-Turn it over.

-Turn it over.

0:20:320:20:34

-Whoa!

-£318,900.

0:20:340:20:40

-Wow!

-625.

-So that's less than what I thought it would be, actually.

-Yeah.

0:20:400:20:44

It's less than I thought it would be, quite a bit less, to be fair,

0:20:440:20:47

but this house, for me, it just doesn't flow.

0:20:470:20:50

At almost £70,000 over budget, this house is out of reach

0:20:500:20:54

unless Julie and Dan's earnings increase substantially down under.

0:20:540:20:59

Overall, it's been an eye-opening property search for the Rutlands.

0:20:590:21:04

Property one failed to deliver the large and bright living space

0:21:040:21:07

Julie dreams of, and almost £5,000 over budget left Dan disappointed.

0:21:070:21:12

With the open-plan living Julie loves and a pool in the garden,

0:21:140:21:18

property two was a real hit with the whole family.

0:21:180:21:21

But even close to the beach and with a pool,

0:21:240:21:26

the final property of the day didn't meet Julie's expectations

0:21:260:21:30

and, at nearly £70,000 over budget, proved unaffordable.

0:21:300:21:35

So, how will the day influence their decision

0:21:380:21:41

when it comes to picking between property in the UK and Australia?

0:21:410:21:45

Based on the houses that we've seen today, we're now going to vote.

0:21:450:21:49

-ALL:

-Australia!

0:22:000:22:02

Yay! We all voted Australia! You voted for Australia!

0:22:030:22:07

-I'm really pleased.

-Yeah, yeah, I like some of the houses we saw.

0:22:070:22:11

The weather's not brilliant, but I can see what it offers out here.

0:22:110:22:14

It's on par with what I've got at home.

0:22:140:22:17

Oh, I'm so excited, this is a really good start to the week.

0:22:170:22:20

-It's a good start for me, as well.

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

0:22:200:22:22

Five votes for Australia has got the week off to a good start.

0:22:300:22:35

But falling for Aussie property is the easy part.

0:22:350:22:38

Julie knows if Dan can't be convinced he can find a job to pay

0:22:380:22:41

for the house he wants, he won't be moving anywhere.

0:22:410:22:45

Back in the UK, Dan's been a carpenter for 16 years.

0:22:460:22:50

Happy in his work and with the lifestyle it affords,

0:22:500:22:53

he has huge reservations about packing it in.

0:22:530:22:56

Everything I've heard over there is saying things are more expensive,

0:22:560:22:59

so it is whether the salary is achievable

0:22:590:23:02

with a job that I want, as well.

0:23:020:23:04

As a former Formula One engineer,

0:23:040:23:07

Julie plans to retrain as a teacher in Australia, but knows

0:23:070:23:11

it's Dan's work prospects that could make or break her dream to emigrate.

0:23:110:23:15

It's really important that Dan gets the right job

0:23:150:23:17

and salary in Australia, because I think that will be absolutely

0:23:170:23:20

key to him making a decision.

0:23:200:23:22

As Dan and Julie prepare to explore work options in Perth,

0:23:220:23:25

Dan's realistic about what the day really means.

0:23:250:23:28

Yesterday was an important day, obviously, to see

0:23:280:23:31

what houses we could get, but today is probably even more important,

0:23:310:23:35

because we've got to make sure that we can actually afford it.

0:23:350:23:39

We've arranged for him to meet Robert Shaw,

0:23:400:23:42

a director at one of Perth's well-established building companies.

0:23:420:23:46

After a quick look around the site,

0:23:470:23:49

Dan gets down to the nitty-gritty of finding work.

0:23:490:23:52

I've had a look at your resume. You've been in the industry a while,

0:23:520:23:55

so, yes, I would say all your skills are definitely transferable.

0:23:550:23:58

If you've got the skill set that you've got, which is

0:23:580:24:00

an ideal base for a supervisor, you'd certainly get a crack here.

0:24:000:24:03

The bad news is Robert suggests Dan might need to learn about

0:24:030:24:06

the Aussie way of working before becoming a supervisor.

0:24:060:24:10

Meanwhile, Julie's gone to the Edith Cowan University to meet

0:24:100:24:13

student recruitment co-ordinator Sarah Bally to find out

0:24:130:24:17

about becoming a maths or science teacher.

0:24:170:24:19

We offer a graduate diploma of education,

0:24:190:24:23

which is a one-year conversion course,

0:24:230:24:25

pretty much, for people that have a completed bachelor degree already.

0:24:250:24:29

If, for example, you're going to become

0:24:290:24:31

a maths teacher and a science teacher,

0:24:310:24:33

we need to see that you've specialised that

0:24:330:24:35

in your bachelor degree.

0:24:350:24:37

With an engineering degree under her belt,

0:24:370:24:38

that shouldn't be a problem for Julie.

0:24:380:24:41

But she still needs to find out how much the course would cost.

0:24:410:24:45

Approximately Aus 6,200 for the full year, for the full course.

0:24:450:24:49

Around £3,000 is comparable with what she'd pay back home.

0:24:490:24:54

-That's really great. Thank you very much.

-No worries!

0:24:540:24:57

Back at the building firm,

0:24:580:24:59

Dan's keen to find out about potential earnings in the short term.

0:24:590:25:03

I understand that I would have to start off on the bottom.

0:25:030:25:06

Would that mean less money?

0:25:060:25:08

You'd be around roughly £30,000.

0:25:080:25:10

That's not as much as I earn at home.

0:25:100:25:13

It's not the answer Dan wants, but Robert assures him

0:25:130:25:16

he could soon be earning a lot more.

0:25:160:25:18

As a supervisor, you might look at somewhere around

0:25:180:25:22

Aus 70,000 to 80,000,

0:25:220:25:25

up to 125,000.

0:25:250:25:28

Between £39,000 and £60,000 is much more promising,

0:25:280:25:32

and Dan's taken aback when Robert makes him an offer.

0:25:320:25:36

If you were lucky enough to come over here

0:25:360:25:38

and we had a position available

0:25:380:25:39

and we wanted to train you off as a supervisor straight off the bat,

0:25:390:25:44

would you be prepared to look at something like that?

0:25:440:25:46

Erm, yeah, obviously, coming over here with the proposition

0:25:460:25:50

of getting a job would obviously make it, yeah, even easier.

0:25:500:25:53

It's great news for Dan.

0:25:530:25:55

Meanwhile, Julie's gone to meet Alison Ramm,

0:25:550:25:58

director of school staffing services

0:25:580:26:00

at Western Australia's Department of Education.

0:26:000:26:03

-Hello!

-Hi.

0:26:030:26:05

Alison's already read Julie's CV

0:26:050:26:06

and the meeting gets off to a good start.

0:26:060:26:09

You'd be a perfect candidate to move into maths or science teaching,

0:26:090:26:14

because not only would you have that qualification,

0:26:140:26:16

you'd also have that great industry experience.

0:26:160:26:20

That's very encouraging, and there's more good news to come.

0:26:200:26:23

We actually currently have a shortage of secondary teachers,

0:26:230:26:26

so jobs are advertised on our government's job board.

0:26:260:26:29

In fact, I looked this morning,

0:26:290:26:31

and there's two science and two maths jobs currently advertised.

0:26:310:26:34

With jobs looking plentiful, all Julie needs to find out now

0:26:340:26:37

is whether the salary would justify her retraining.

0:26:370:26:41

What sort of wages could I expect once I qualified?

0:26:410:26:43

You'd start at the moment

0:26:430:26:45

-on about £35,000 a year.

-Wow!

0:26:450:26:47

If you worked here for three years, you would progress to about £42,000,

0:26:470:26:51

and then, after seven years, you'd be on about £49,000.

0:26:510:26:56

That sort of salary's amazing.

0:26:560:26:58

It's been a great day for Julie at work,

0:26:580:27:01

and when she reunites with Dan,

0:27:010:27:02

she's over the moon to hear about his job offer.

0:27:020:27:05

He sort of said, if we come over, to give him a call

0:27:050:27:10

and he'd be able to, if he's got jobs going and looking for people,

0:27:100:27:13

he'd take me on and give me a go.

0:27:130:27:14

So you could give him a ring when we move.

0:27:140:27:17

When we move, yeah. If we move.

0:27:170:27:19

THEY LAUGH

0:27:190:27:21

Dan's not jumping into anything, but now it's time to discover

0:27:210:27:25

whether today has done enough to make the couple both choose work

0:27:250:27:28

in Australia over the UK.

0:27:280:27:31

After a great day looking at job prospects, it's time to vote.

0:27:310:27:35

-BOTH:

-Australia!

0:27:440:27:46

SHE SHRIEKS

0:27:470:27:49

Oh, I'm so pleased!

0:27:490:27:50

It looked like Julie was on a winning streak.

0:27:540:27:57

So, did a day sampling Australia's lifestyle

0:27:570:28:00

see her vision for a new life down under brought one step closer?

0:28:000:28:04

Making the most of the time together,

0:28:110:28:13

the family set out to explore

0:28:130:28:14

the historic city of Fremantle, just 30 minutes from central Perth.

0:28:140:28:18

First stop's the famous markets, where Dan wastes no time

0:28:220:28:25

getting to grips with traditional Australian culture.

0:28:250:28:29

HE BLOWS A DEEP NOTE

0:28:290:28:31

-You're practically a native!

-No, I don't think so!

0:28:330:28:36

Nice try, Julie!

0:28:360:28:38

After a leisurely stroll round the market,

0:28:380:28:40

the family refuel with some authentic Aussie food.

0:28:400:28:43

There's over 200 million kangaroos in Australia,

0:28:440:28:47

-so we use a lot of kangaroo.

-It's really nice, isn't it?

0:28:470:28:51

Zack's definitely enjoying his first proper taste of Australian living.

0:28:510:28:55

Coming to the market here every day would be fantastic.

0:28:550:28:59

And Dan looks impressed, too.

0:28:590:29:01

-Is all this convincing you?

-It's working.

0:29:010:29:04

-Oh! I'm so excited!

-It's working.

0:29:040:29:06

It's a great start to the day, but when the family venture out

0:29:060:29:08

for a walk through the harbour, Dan's thoughts return to home.

0:29:080:29:13

The family side of things, I think, is what's still playing on me,

0:29:130:29:16

and that's leaving my dad.

0:29:160:29:18

If I do move over here, even though

0:29:180:29:20

Dad's said that he would come over and see me, it is a long way.

0:29:200:29:22

I'm just not sure if

0:29:220:29:24

that's something that he would actually be able to achieve.

0:29:240:29:27

Julie could still have a battle on her hands

0:29:270:29:29

convincing Dan to make the move.

0:29:290:29:31

But, meanwhile, the family end their day

0:29:310:29:33

with a fishing trip on the Swan River.

0:29:330:29:36

Well, this is the boat, guys. Come on board.

0:29:360:29:38

-Whoohoo!

-DAN LAUGHS

0:29:380:29:40

-Could we get something like that, Dad?

-Probably not,

0:29:400:29:43

mate, unless I nick it.

0:29:430:29:44

ZACK LAUGHS

0:29:440:29:46

He might not be able to afford the biggest boat on the river,

0:29:460:29:50

but is this lifestyle one he could imagine living?

0:29:500:29:53

Yeah, I could definitely see myself taking one of these out.

0:29:530:29:56

I'd probably have, like, a doughnut on the back towing along Zack.

0:29:560:30:00

For now, Julie's concentrating on

0:30:000:30:02

selling days like this to Willow and Faye.

0:30:020:30:05

-Could you see us coming over and spending days on the river?

-Yeah!

0:30:050:30:09

Catching a fish gets Zack on board, too.

0:30:090:30:12

Oh, I caught a fish!

0:30:120:30:14

The day's panned out well for everyone.

0:30:140:30:16

The sun's come out for us.

0:30:160:30:18

Yeah, it's just brilliant. I'm loving seeing them all really happy.

0:30:180:30:21

It might be a bit too small for your head!

0:30:210:30:24

But as it draws to a close, Dan's still mulling over the reality.

0:30:240:30:28

Days like this would mean sacrificing relationships

0:30:280:30:31

with everyone they love back home.

0:30:310:30:34

Yeah, it's all good, it's just that one thing about family.

0:30:340:30:38

-I know. I'll really miss them.

-SHE SOBS

0:30:380:30:40

And it is such a long way.

0:30:400:30:42

The family face a tough decision come the end of the week,

0:30:470:30:50

but now it's time to see if the day's done enough to make them

0:30:500:30:53

all put Australia's lifestyle ahead of the UK's.

0:30:530:30:57

Well, it's time to vote.

0:30:590:31:01

-ALL:

-Australia!

0:31:120:31:14

Yay!

0:31:150:31:18

Yay, we've all voted the same!

0:31:180:31:19

-Dan?

-Yeah, no, it was really good. It's been a really good day.

0:31:190:31:22

I mean, the sun's out. Brilliant.

0:31:220:31:24

-And you've said I can have a boat.

-JULIE LAUGHS

0:31:240:31:27

It's our third vote, and the whole family

0:31:270:31:30

so far has voted for Australia, which is just amazing!

0:31:300:31:33

With another clean sweep of votes for Australia,

0:31:460:31:49

Julie's dream is gathering pace.

0:31:490:31:51

But she knows Dan has to be convinced the move won't risk

0:31:510:31:54

their financial stability, otherwise they won't be going anywhere.

0:31:540:31:58

To fund the move, the couple would need to sell their house in the UK.

0:31:580:32:02

They believe it's worth around £300,000. To see if they're right,

0:32:020:32:07

we sent round two estate agents for current valuations.

0:32:070:32:10

So, we're going to find out how much our house is worth.

0:32:110:32:14

Go on, then, mate, you going to press play?

0:32:140:32:16

Ooh, look, there's our house!

0:32:190:32:21

That's funny, seeing your house on TV, isn't it?

0:32:210:32:24

Yes, I like this room. Double-glazed windows, plenty of space.

0:32:240:32:28

It's a good family size.

0:32:280:32:31

And these units, well, they're well built.

0:32:310:32:34

Great, spacious, very good use.

0:32:340:32:37

I know, I built them.

0:32:370:32:39

Yeah, good-size room. You've got space for a range cooker,

0:32:390:32:42

and the dual-aspect windows make it, again, a light, bright and airy room.

0:32:420:32:47

Yeah, so, this is the main bedroom. We've got built-in wardrobes.

0:32:470:32:50

A bit of work necessary here.

0:32:500:32:52

-SHE TRIES TO SUPPRESS A CHUCKLE

-Oh, no, I forgot about that!

0:32:520:32:54

OK, I'm really loving the size of the green area there.

0:32:540:32:57

Definitely good for entertaining, for the kids etc.

0:32:570:33:00

Looks like the lawn could have been mowed.

0:33:000:33:02

In the current market, I would set the price

0:33:020:33:04

at £260,000 and for early sale £250,000.

0:33:040:33:09

No!

0:33:090:33:10

In the current market, I would value this property

0:33:110:33:14

at 315,000. For quick sale, 300,000.

0:33:140:33:18

-Better!

-See? See? Proves I'm right.

-I definitely think 260 is too low.

0:33:180:33:23

And if it was to sell for that, we would really struggle.

0:33:230:33:27

Yeah, we would, yeah.

0:33:270:33:29

It's a disappointing start.

0:33:290:33:31

And as they sit down to work out finances in Australia,

0:33:310:33:34

Julie knows Dan could be a tough audience.

0:33:340:33:37

It's been really good, but if the figures aren't there

0:33:370:33:40

and we can't afford to do it, we can't afford to do it.

0:33:400:33:43

We've provided some cost-of-living comparison documents,

0:33:430:33:46

starting with the weekly grocery shop.

0:33:460:33:48

-Bananas.

-Yeah?

0:33:480:33:51

£1.20 in the UK for ten bananas.

0:33:510:33:55

£4.49 in Australia?!

0:33:550:33:57

-Yeah.

-Biscuits. For three packs, it's £1.20 in the UK.

0:33:570:34:03

The equivalent is nearly £4 in Australia!

0:34:030:34:06

Julie tots up the figures to work out the overall damage.

0:34:070:34:11

Our weekly shopping would be £149.

0:34:110:34:15

Although more expensive than the UK, the figures aren't too bad.

0:34:150:34:19

-£11.60 is neither her nor there.

-That's a really positive start.

0:34:190:34:22

Yes, that's OK.

0:34:220:34:24

The couple move on to look at the bigger monthly outgoings,

0:34:240:34:27

basing their figures on the second property they viewed.

0:34:270:34:32

So, in Australia, the cost of the mortgage would be £840.

0:34:320:34:36

-In Australia, yeah.

-And the UK cost is £570.

-Yeah.

0:34:360:34:40

A quick check at the figures reveals the couple would also spend

0:34:400:34:43

more on gas, electricity and water but, fortunately,

0:34:430:34:47

fuel costs are a bit more palatable.

0:34:470:34:50

We pay £400 in the UK.

0:34:500:34:52

-And 238.

-That's just amazing, isn't it?

-That's massive.

0:34:520:34:56

Overall, the couple's monthly bills would rise to £2,677.

0:34:560:35:03

-Every month, we would be £241...

-Worse off. Yeah?

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:35:030:35:08

It's a lot of money.

0:35:080:35:10

We'll just have to hope that our salaries can compensate.

0:35:100:35:13

This could be where Julie's plans begin to unravel.

0:35:130:35:17

In the UK, Dan earns almost £2,400 every month,

0:35:170:35:22

but that figure's likely to decrease down under.

0:35:220:35:25

-..and the Australian equivalent is £2,080.

-Yeah.

0:35:250:35:29

Obviously, I'm not feeling particularly happy about that.

0:35:290:35:33

That's £300 a month less, virtually.

0:35:330:35:36

Hopefully, the potential for Julie to earn more once she's qualified

0:35:360:35:40

will help balance the books.

0:35:400:35:42

So, in the UK my salary is about £700 a month,

0:35:420:35:46

and in Australia, that's got the potential to be 1,330.

0:35:460:35:50

The couple's potential joint income would be just over £3,400.

0:35:500:35:56

When they subtract the higher bills, the result's not too bad.

0:35:560:36:00

-So we're left with £733 every month.

-So we'd be £94 better off.

-Yeah.

0:36:000:36:06

It's not a fortune, but Julie's relieved they're still in the black.

0:36:060:36:10

-I'm just... I'm just delighted.

-I'm slowly losing this battle.

0:36:100:36:14

That's brilliant. It's made my day.

0:36:140:36:17

The figures have shown the move to be affordable, but are they good enough

0:36:170:36:20

to keep Dan and Julie on the same page when it comes

0:36:200:36:23

to choosing between finances in Australia and the UK?

0:36:230:36:27

It's time to vote.

0:36:270:36:29

-BOTH:

-Australia!

0:36:380:36:39

-Yay!

-DAN LAUGHS

0:36:390:36:41

-Well done!

-So four out of four, yeah?

0:36:410:36:44

-That was a bit of a no-brainer, really, wasn't it?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:36:440:36:47

We're better off in this country, so...

0:36:470:36:49

-Yeah.

-Yeah. Yeah?

-Which is amazing.

0:36:490:36:51

Yeah. I think I'm surprising meself!

0:36:510:36:54

Realising the move's financially feasible has put Dan even further

0:36:560:37:00

on Julie's side, but the greatest hurdle of all is on the horizon.

0:37:000:37:05

Dan's always been concerned about leaving loved ones in the UK.

0:37:050:37:08

While the children play outside,

0:37:090:37:11

the couple sit down to watch heartfelt messages from home.

0:37:110:37:15

I'm ready for watching the videos of friends and family.

0:37:150:37:19

Hello, Danny, Julie. I love you all.

0:37:210:37:26

I hope you're having a good time.

0:37:260:37:28

Hello from Blighty!

0:37:290:37:31

-ALL:

-Hi, guys!

0:37:310:37:33

Really hope you're having a terrible time in Australia.

0:37:330:37:35

-Hope the weather's awful.

-Yeah, and those spiders...

0:37:350:37:38

-Julie and Dan are very well suited, aren't they?

-Oh, very well.

0:37:380:37:42

They make a good pair and a very good family for the children.

0:37:420:37:45

She's very domineering. I feel sorry for him at times.

0:37:450:37:48

He's like a little dog, isn't he? He pants.

0:37:480:37:49

I thought she was really brave when she left her job that she loved

0:37:490:37:52

because she knew that staying at home and looking after the children

0:37:520:37:56

was really important to her, and I really admired her decision.

0:37:560:37:58

Well, Harry would be definitely gutted that's Zack left,

0:37:580:38:01

and I'd be pretty gutted that Dan's gone, to be fair.

0:38:010:38:04

Yeah, I just think there'll be a hole in family get-togethers.

0:38:040:38:07

There'll be people missing.

0:38:070:38:10

I do wonder what will happen if and when something goes wrong

0:38:100:38:16

and she has nobody there to support her.

0:38:160:38:20

And, yeah, she is my best friend,

0:38:200:38:23

and I shall miss her terribly when she's gone.

0:38:230:38:26

I'm dreading it!

0:38:260:38:27

But it's best for them.

0:38:270:38:29

Yeah...

0:38:330:38:36

We're just...

0:38:360:38:38

We're a really close family, and...

0:38:380:38:40

..I didn't think she'd...

0:38:410:38:44

want to move away from us.

0:38:440:38:46

I'm still really gutted that...

0:38:490:38:51

they're really serious about it.

0:38:510:38:53

I love him dearly.

0:39:000:39:02

If they do...

0:39:030:39:05

decide to go to Australia...

0:39:050:39:09

erm...

0:39:090:39:10

..I'll be a bit upset.

0:39:110:39:13

If you really think Australia will give you a better

0:39:130:39:15

quality of life, then you need to do it.

0:39:150:39:18

But I don't want you to go, and I'd be really gutted if you did.

0:39:210:39:24

That was just as hard...

0:39:330:39:35

as I thought it was going to be.

0:39:350:39:37

It's, like, I don't want to leave them.

0:39:370:39:40

If I could bring them all with me, I would.

0:39:400:39:42

Yeah, that was really tough.

0:39:420:39:44

It was always going to be.

0:39:440:39:46

With not a dry eye between them,

0:39:490:39:52

the couple were left contemplating the enormity

0:39:520:39:54

of putting thousands of miles between them and their loved ones.

0:39:540:39:58

After such a positive week for the family,

0:39:580:40:01

will the emotional pull back to the UK prove too strong to overcome?

0:40:010:40:06

When the family touched down in Australia a week ago,

0:40:060:40:09

Julie was desperate to convince Dan the country she fell in love with

0:40:090:40:13

15 years previously was where their future lay.

0:40:130:40:16

This week has been trying to find out

0:40:180:40:20

whether Australia has the lifestyle that Jules thought it did,

0:40:200:40:23

really, whether it was worth moving the other side of the world.

0:40:230:40:27

Now a wife and mum, Julie's circumstances have changed

0:40:270:40:30

since she was last here.

0:40:300:40:32

But the country's more than lived up to her memories.

0:40:320:40:35

In a way, I feel it's even better,

0:40:350:40:37

because when you become a mum you get

0:40:370:40:39

so much enjoyment from watching your children and seeing them

0:40:390:40:43

in an environment where you know that they're going to thrive.

0:40:430:40:46

Willow and Faye can see the advantages of Aussie living.

0:40:460:40:49

We can go on the beach more in Australia

0:40:490:40:52

and we can go outside more.

0:40:520:40:53

We're not near the beach in England.

0:40:530:40:56

Zack's enjoyed himself, too,

0:40:560:40:58

but he's still not decided on where he wants to call home.

0:40:580:41:02

I think the last vote with my family,

0:41:020:41:04

it's going to be pretty hard to choose.

0:41:040:41:06

And messages from loved ones in the UK

0:41:080:41:10

have reminded Julie and Dan of how much they'd be giving up.

0:41:100:41:13

Watching the family video was really hard, and it has put

0:41:140:41:18

a dampener on everything throughout the week, in a way.

0:41:180:41:21

It has made it really difficult.

0:41:210:41:23

It was really hard on Jules.

0:41:250:41:27

It was hard on me, as well, but, yeah, it was really hard on Jules.

0:41:270:41:30

And it upset me watching her cry.

0:41:300:41:33

With emotions running high, the family prepare to decide

0:41:330:41:36

once and for all where they want to call home.

0:41:360:41:39

Now it's time to make our final vote on where we would like to live.

0:41:410:41:44

-ZACK: England! OTHERS:

-Australia!

0:41:580:42:01

That's the wrong way!

0:42:010:42:02

You choose England.

0:42:020:42:04

-Yeah.

-Did you choose England?

-Yeah.

0:42:040:42:06

-Why would you prefer to live in England?

-Because I miss my friends.

0:42:060:42:11

Do you? That's OK. It's OK to miss your friends.

0:42:110:42:14

That's OK.

0:42:140:42:16

And, girls, why did you choose to live in Australia?

0:42:160:42:19

Because it's nice and sunny!

0:42:190:42:20

-And you can come in the water with us.

-Dan? Australia?

0:42:200:42:25

It's been a brilliant week.

0:42:250:42:27

Everything I had doubts about has been allayed. Yeah, it's...

0:42:270:42:32

I think it could work. I think it's worth giving it a go.

0:42:320:42:34

-The Rutland family down under, eh?

-Yeah. Yeah, I think so.

0:42:340:42:37

Zack still needed some gentle persuasion,

0:42:470:42:50

but with a majority vote for Australia,

0:42:500:42:53

Julie's hard work and determination had finally paid off.

0:42:530:42:57

So, 12 months later, it's time to find out

0:42:570:43:01

if the family are now living at home...or away.

0:43:010:43:05

It's April 2016 and the Rutlands are living in...

0:43:060:43:10

..Perth, Australia.

0:43:110:43:14

When the trial week won Dan round,

0:43:140:43:16

Julie couldn't believe the dream she'd had for so long

0:43:160:43:19

was on the verge of coming true.

0:43:190:43:21

The fact that he said yes

0:43:210:43:22

and he wanted to move out here was obviously amazing.

0:43:220:43:25

It answered all the questions that I had, all the fears that I had.

0:43:250:43:28

The Rutlands flew home on a high, but then came the difficult bit.

0:43:280:43:33

I think literally as the wheels touched down back in England,

0:43:330:43:36

her sisters were on the phone to her, "How did it go? How did it go?

0:43:360:43:40

"How did it go? Are you still going?"

0:43:400:43:42

Especially my sister Kirsten out of everybody

0:43:420:43:44

had probably hoped the most that we would change our minds.

0:43:440:43:49

Even though my dad had given the blessing

0:43:490:43:51

and my sisters and stuff like that,

0:43:510:43:53

it all then became a lot realer that we really were going to do it.

0:43:530:43:58

Decision made,

0:43:580:44:00

they then began the process of packing up their lives in the UK.

0:44:000:44:05

It just felt huge.

0:44:050:44:08

I was just really scared, actually, and very daunted cos as much

0:44:080:44:12

as I really love Dan, you can tell by talking to him, he doesn't...

0:44:120:44:15

He's not "sorta" so I knew that I'd got a really big task ahead of me.

0:44:150:44:20

Julie found the experience particularly difficult.

0:44:200:44:24

-Sorry...

-It's all right. It was, it was hard. It was really hard on you.

0:44:270:44:32

Selling their house in Oxfordshire was the first step.

0:44:320:44:36

That was the big thing.

0:44:360:44:37

Up until that point, none of it's real, but actually putting

0:44:370:44:40

your house on the market and that "for sale" sign made it real.

0:44:400:44:45

It made it a lot realer for the people back home, didn't it?

0:44:450:44:48

-They realised that we were actually going.

-Yeah.

0:44:480:44:51

Less than six months after their trial week down under,

0:44:510:44:54

the Rutlands prepared to say farewell to family and friends.

0:44:540:44:58

You're just dreading the final goodbye and that just seemed

0:44:580:45:01

to come round so quickly.

0:45:010:45:03

We had a fantastic goodbye party.

0:45:030:45:07

It was one of the best parties I've ever had. All our friends came.

0:45:070:45:10

It was a memory to take with us to Australia of happy times,

0:45:100:45:13

not of tears and sadness that we were leaving -

0:45:130:45:16

of happiness that we were going.

0:45:160:45:19

The family touched down in Perth in September 2015,

0:45:190:45:23

but starting again on the other side of the world

0:45:230:45:25

wasn't without its challenges.

0:45:250:45:27

We were very tired. It was dark, it was really cold.

0:45:270:45:32

Their first home was a short-term rental property.

0:45:320:45:36

It wasn't the nicest of houses. It wasn't very well equipped.

0:45:360:45:39

Yeah, everything was a little bit of a letdown.

0:45:390:45:42

Their first few weeks down under fell short of the dream lifestyle

0:45:420:45:45

they'd moved half a world for.

0:45:450:45:48

You come here, you have nothing - simple things like bank accounts.

0:45:490:45:52

You haven't got a doctor's,

0:45:520:45:54

you don't know where you're going to live.

0:45:540:45:56

Car shopping, house shopping, buying insurances - everything.

0:45:560:46:00

It was manic, wasn't it?

0:46:000:46:01

Yeah, when you're tired, everything is so much harder.

0:46:010:46:04

When you've got three tired children, that's even harder.

0:46:040:46:07

And, you know, every time we got into the car

0:46:070:46:10

to look at another house or go to another bank,

0:46:100:46:12

they were, "Mummy, Daddy, no, not again!"

0:46:120:46:16

You feel bad for them and it's literally the easiest way,

0:46:160:46:20

I think, to describe it is what takes you most of your adult life

0:46:200:46:23

to accumulate, you have to fit into three weeks.

0:46:230:46:27

Desperate to establish some kind of normality,

0:46:280:46:31

having a place to call their own was high on the list of priorities.

0:46:310:46:35

My criteria was a house with a pool right next to the beach

0:46:350:46:39

that allowed a dog.

0:46:390:46:40

It soon became plain that that was not available

0:46:400:46:44

so we knew we were going to have to compromise on something

0:46:440:46:46

and our compromise was a pool.

0:46:460:46:49

The Rutlands are currently renting in Mullaloo,

0:46:490:46:52

35 minutes' drive north of Perth centre.

0:46:520:46:55

One evening, Jules was looking through the internet

0:46:550:46:57

and found this place and rung them

0:46:570:46:59

and they said, "Yeah, come and have a look."

0:46:590:47:00

Before we'd walked in through the door, we were like,

0:47:000:47:03

"Yeah, we're going to try and get this one," and we did.

0:47:030:47:05

So, this is our kitchen,

0:47:060:47:08

which is one of the reasons why we fell in love with this house.

0:47:080:47:11

It's just beautiful.

0:47:110:47:12

It was light and airy and one of the things I said I wanted

0:47:120:47:16

from a house was a great big open-plan living area

0:47:160:47:18

and this just fits the bill perfectly.

0:47:180:47:22

This is our outside space. This is one of the things we wanted.

0:47:220:47:26

We come and do homework here if we're not in the kitchen,

0:47:260:47:29

don't we, and the weather's nice.

0:47:290:47:30

There's the barbecue, which gets used every day.

0:47:300:47:32

We hardly turn the oven on at all.

0:47:320:47:34

-Yeah, it's great, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is, yeah.

0:47:340:47:37

It's lovely and we just, especially in the evenings,

0:47:370:47:39

we just tend to sit out here with our books

0:47:390:47:41

once the kids have gone to bed and just relax.

0:47:410:47:44

Indoors, the children have their own special space.

0:47:440:47:48

I've always wanted a playroom so, basically,

0:47:480:47:52

this is where the kids can just come and it's a little bit of a mess.

0:47:520:47:56

Mum and Dad are very happy with their room, too.

0:47:560:48:00

It has the most amazing wardrobe.

0:48:000:48:02

It is definitely another one of your favourite bits of the house.

0:48:020:48:05

Let me just demonstrate just my side,

0:48:050:48:06

just a quick little peek - look at all that storage!

0:48:060:48:09

Amazing! And then we've got a really gorgeous en suite.

0:48:090:48:14

I've never had an en-suite in my life before so that's a real bonus.

0:48:140:48:18

To be fair, I don't think I could go back to not having an en-suite.

0:48:180:48:21

There's plenty of space for the whole family

0:48:210:48:24

to spread themselves out.

0:48:240:48:25

Really, the kids, in this part of the house,

0:48:250:48:27

they've almost got their own wing, haven't they?

0:48:270:48:29

It makes life a lot easier

0:48:290:48:31

with the space that you get with Australian houses.

0:48:310:48:34

Since we moved in, these doors have been open every single day

0:48:340:48:38

from morning till light and I love it.

0:48:380:48:40

If a house had a soul, this one's got a good one.

0:48:400:48:42

So, how have the children adapted to their new life down under?

0:48:420:48:47

Zack's been the hardest to settle.

0:48:470:48:49

Being the oldest,

0:48:490:48:50

he's definitely been more aware of what we were doing, of the distance.

0:48:500:48:56

He understands about making friends and there's an awkwardness to it.

0:48:560:49:00

To start a new school, it was really tough. The work's a lot harder.

0:49:000:49:05

It was tough making friends, but, in the end, I made a lot of friends.

0:49:050:49:09

Joining the local surf club's been a real lifeline for Zack.

0:49:090:49:13

I have watched him in six months come a long way.

0:49:130:49:17

I like Australia because it's fun,

0:49:170:49:21

it's not chucking it down with rain and there's lots of things to do.

0:49:210:49:27

Seriously, you take him to the beach,

0:49:270:49:28

you can't get him out the sea. The rougher, the better.

0:49:280:49:31

He's confident, he's happy.

0:49:310:49:34

Yeah, he'll still tell you he prefers England,

0:49:340:49:37

but I don't believe it.

0:49:370:49:39

And Willow and Faye?

0:49:390:49:41

The girls have been so unfazed by the whole process. Faye...

0:49:410:49:47

Faye hated school in England, she hates school in Australia.

0:49:470:49:50

She's just Faye. She's going to be my little surfer dude.

0:49:500:49:55

She absolutely is going to be an Aussie.

0:49:550:49:58

I like living in Australia because it has sometimes

0:49:580:50:03

a cool breeze cos it's hot and flowers grow.

0:50:030:50:10

And then Willow, I'm so proud of Willow.

0:50:100:50:13

After I cried just a little bit, then I stopped,

0:50:130:50:17

then I made some friends with Billie.

0:50:170:50:19

Willow found a friend straightaway and they're still friends now

0:50:190:50:24

so, yeah, Willow settled in really well.

0:50:240:50:27

She's not like the others, she's not sporty.

0:50:270:50:29

She's not a big fan of the beach,

0:50:290:50:32

but she does swimming lessons like the others, she's confident,

0:50:320:50:35

she's got some amazing friends and she's doing great.

0:50:350:50:38

Julie and Dan are convinced they made the right move

0:50:380:50:42

for their young family.

0:50:420:50:44

As they all get older, yeah, they will see why we moved.

0:50:440:50:50

Every heartache and every tear and every bit I miss someone

0:50:500:50:53

is absolutely worth it because the children are so happy

0:50:530:50:56

and the lifestyle they've got is amazing.

0:50:560:50:58

And it's not just the children

0:50:580:51:00

who've taken to life down under like ducks to water.

0:51:000:51:03

Yeah, she forced me into it to start off with

0:51:030:51:05

and now I've completely, yeah, sunk my teeth into it.

0:51:050:51:08

I love barbecuing,

0:51:080:51:10

I go out as many times a week as I can on my paddleboard.

0:51:100:51:13

He's absolutely an Aussie.

0:51:130:51:15

In fact, he talks like an Aussie.

0:51:150:51:17

The other day, he said to me

0:51:170:51:19

something about throwing a snag on the barbie, was it?

0:51:190:51:23

This lifestyle suits him down to the ground.

0:51:230:51:26

Yeah, I love it.

0:51:260:51:28

The Aussie lifestyle has meant more quality time together.

0:51:280:51:32

Perth is a really family orientated place to be,

0:51:320:51:37

like free events in the park that we take them to.

0:51:370:51:39

Yeah, there's just so much on offer for families. It's a great place.

0:51:390:51:44

Being in Australia has definitely enhanced our family life.

0:51:440:51:47

The couple have developed a solid social circle in Perth, too.

0:51:470:51:52

Someone that we met who is literally a one-person welcome to Perth.

0:51:520:51:57

She literally sets up barbecues and you get to meet

0:51:570:52:00

all these other people and we're still friends with them now.

0:52:000:52:03

Dan's meeting people through work

0:52:030:52:04

and I've met some people through the school

0:52:040:52:06

so, yeah, certainly meeting friends has just been wonderful.

0:52:060:52:11

Unfortunately, the job Dan was offered

0:52:110:52:14

during his trial week didn't pan out.

0:52:140:52:17

When I got here, I made the phone calls, e-mails

0:52:170:52:21

and just got absolutely no response to that,

0:52:210:52:23

which did annoy me a little bit.

0:52:230:52:24

There were some choice words said, but, at the end of the day,

0:52:240:52:27

I just had to get on and find another job, which I did.

0:52:270:52:30

Getting used to the local way of working hasn't been plain sailing.

0:52:300:52:34

Carpenters here have a different sort of role.

0:52:340:52:37

They're very much used to do sort of like all sorts of different things.

0:52:370:52:40

Yeah, for the last week,

0:52:400:52:42

I've been digging holes and doing shuttering, which isn't something

0:52:420:52:45

I've done before, but it turns out I can dig quite a good hole.

0:52:450:52:49

Working on a self-employed basis,

0:52:490:52:51

Dan currently earns around £225 a day.

0:52:510:52:55

It is really good, but it is for a ten-hour day.

0:52:550:52:58

I could earn the same money back home

0:52:580:53:00

in a shorter period of time just because of the way things are done,

0:53:000:53:04

but it does leave my weekends free, which was the point of coming here.

0:53:040:53:10

Julie's started her training to become a teacher down under,

0:53:100:53:14

but with just one wage coming in,

0:53:140:53:16

the couple have had to dip into their savings to survive.

0:53:160:53:19

The money that we had in our bank was everything that we had

0:53:190:53:22

and to start off with, we just saw it...

0:53:220:53:25

It was like someone had drilled a hole in our bank account

0:53:250:53:27

and it was just leaking out -

0:53:270:53:29

to see thousands and thousands of dollars

0:53:290:53:33

just going out of your account just to feed, just to pay your bills.

0:53:330:53:39

We've just had to accept it

0:53:390:53:41

and think, "OK, we're going to have to do that,

0:53:410:53:43

"but we're just going to do it as a short term."

0:53:430:53:45

Originally signed up for a two-year course,

0:53:450:53:48

Julie's now pushing to qualify in just a year.

0:53:480:53:52

Now, doing a degree full-time with three children

0:53:520:53:56

in a new place is quite tough.

0:53:560:53:59

She's also worried about the extra pressure it's putting on Dan.

0:53:590:54:03

He works long hours and in the heat,

0:54:030:54:05

that takes it out of him and it does put a strain on us

0:54:050:54:08

and I feel guilty because of that, but, you know, you just have to keep

0:54:080:54:13

thinking it is a short-term goal, it is only a year.

0:54:130:54:16

There is going to be an outcome at the end of it

0:54:160:54:19

so while it's tough, it's not going to be forever.

0:54:190:54:21

But financial worries haven't been the only negative.

0:54:210:54:25

Things that I didn't expect to miss so much, I miss a lot.

0:54:260:54:31

Some days, like, although it's beautiful, some days,

0:54:310:54:34

you think all the sunshine in the world doesn't make up for a hug...

0:54:340:54:38

But I wouldn't want to go back to England.

0:54:430:54:45

I just wish they were all here with me.

0:54:460:54:49

I miss my dad, I miss my family.

0:54:490:54:51

Apart from that, I don't actually miss anything.

0:54:530:54:56

Julie's mum and stepdad have already been out to visit.

0:54:560:54:59

Picking them up from the airport was a reminder

0:54:590:55:02

of how far from home they are.

0:55:020:55:04

I think there must have been so many people that came through the airport

0:55:040:55:07

that hadn't seen their children for so long

0:55:070:55:09

that by the time my mum came through the airport,

0:55:090:55:11

I'd already gone through a box of tissues.

0:55:110:55:13

Some poor woman fell to her knees at the sight of her son.

0:55:130:55:16

Oh, my God, I was clinging hold of the railings, like, sobbing

0:55:160:55:20

and I'd never met the woman before.

0:55:200:55:22

Granny's visit was a complete surprise for the children.

0:55:220:55:26

They were playing at the park when my mum arrived

0:55:260:55:28

and it was just lovely.

0:55:280:55:31

My mum came over the hill

0:55:310:55:33

and I was saying to the kids like, "Who's that? Who's that?"

0:55:330:55:36

And they were all looking and then all of a sudden,

0:55:360:55:38

it clicked with Zack and he was like, "It's Granny Annie!"

0:55:380:55:41

It was really great to see them again

0:55:410:55:43

cos I'd missed them, I missed them a lot.

0:55:430:55:45

It's lovely to have them here and also it is that bit

0:55:450:55:48

that now they can see why we've done it.

0:55:480:55:50

The lifestyle is incredible. It's brilliant, brilliant for kids.

0:55:500:55:56

I envy them. I really do envy them, you know.

0:55:580:56:02

And there's plenty of other visits in the pipeline.

0:56:030:56:06

Good friends coming out at Christmas.

0:56:060:56:08

My dad, at the moment,

0:56:080:56:10

depending on how his operation goes on his knee,

0:56:100:56:13

he intends on coming out in March.

0:56:130:56:15

They're just a year into their new life down under,

0:56:150:56:17

but Dan and Julie are convinced the move's a permanent one.

0:56:170:56:21

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that we did the right thing.

0:56:210:56:25

No, neither in mine, either.

0:56:250:56:26

Money's tough, it is definitely tough, but it's a short-term tough.

0:56:260:56:30

There is light going to be at the end of the tunnel.

0:56:300:56:32

We're really happy, the kids are really happy and I think the longer

0:56:320:56:35

we are here, the more ingrained our lives become in Australia.

0:56:350:56:39

Just looking forward to the future in general.

0:56:390:56:41

And then, obviously, the main aim

0:56:410:56:43

is to work towards that boat that you promised me.

0:56:430:56:45

-SHE LAUGHS

-Oh, yeah, the boat!

0:56:450:56:47

-I want to ride one.

-I know. Daddy wants to own one.

0:56:470:56:50

Except you both might want to ride it.

0:56:500:56:52

I can't believe I did it.

0:56:540:56:55

I can't believe I was that brave enough because, actually,

0:56:550:56:59

it's a really long road.

0:56:590:57:01
