Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
the show that catapults a British family right across | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
the other side of the world | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
to help them make the biggest decision of their life. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
Paul and Jo Williams are determined to see if they can find a better life in Australia. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
To go there would fulfil a huge ambition for Paul. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
I'm seeing it for the four of us as a real adventure. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Because we've been talking about it for so long | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
and it's something that I've wanted to do, it's like it's not real. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
And to emigrate would be a hard decision for Jo. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
I think I'd get extremely homesick. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it - I'd absolutely hate it. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:42
And it would mean an enormous sacrifice. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Paul's daughter, Alice, from a previous marriage, wouldn't be able to move with them. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
He's optimistic she'd join them when she's old enough. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
If we were to move out here and Alice decide not to come, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
I'd be gutted. Ultimately, she's my daughter, I love her to bits. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
She's a huge part of my life. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
If she were to decide to not come out here, it'd be heart-wrenching. It really would. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
So, will that leave the Williams' plans | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
to move hanging in the balance? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Or will they decide to go where they're Wanted Down Under? | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
For many Brits, the gloomy economic forecast is making | 0:01:34 | 0:01:39
Australia's relatively sunny economy look tempting. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
And, for anyone who's under 45 and on the skills shortage list, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
a new life Down Under could be a thrilling possibility. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Last year, over 60 Brits a day made that leap, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
but how tough was that decision? | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
We've given 20 British families the chance they've always dreamed of, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
to swap their lives in the UK for a new life Down Under. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
After a week, they'll get to vote one way or the other. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Will they stay in the UK or will they move to Australia? | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
The Williams family lives in a village in Leicestershire | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
and consists of Dad, Paul, Mum, Jo and their daughters, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
seven-year-old Ellie and Abby, who's five. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
Paul is a police officer for the Leicestershire police, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
who spends most of the day, quite literally, with his head in the clouds. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
No, this isn't Airwolf. Paul's work is a lot more serious. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
My job here is an air observer. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
I've been at this unit now for four years. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
The jobs that we do vary. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
They can vary from searching an area for suspects | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
that may have hidden in people's gardens or in fields, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
through to searching for missing people. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
But we mainly support police officers on the ground. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
In my eyes, one of the best jobs you can do. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
For years, it's been Paul's big dream to live in Australia. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
A friend of mine moved to Australia about six, seven years ago now. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
I was lucky enough to go and visit him, on my own, it was great. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
I spent 10 days out there and... | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
like him, I absolutely fell in love with the country. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Then I started to look on a website, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
realised that British police officers were quite sought after. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
Jo's hoping a move to Oz would give them a much needed change of pace. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
We've got a very fast lifestyle. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
I work, Paul works. You know, the kids are at school. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
He works shifts and it's very on the go all the time | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
and from what we've heard, it's very much a slower pace of life. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Deep down, that's what we really want. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
But they'll have to be quick. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Time is of the essence when it comes to Paul's job. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
The concerning thing, at the moment, is the fact that I've heard | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
that South Australia police, this year, the 2008-2009, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
will be the last recruiting campaign that they'll be doing. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
It's literally make or break time. Will we? Won't we? Sort of thing. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
Half of me is really excited to go. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
You know, I can't wait. Every time I think about it | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
my stomach goes over and I think it's gonna be brilliant. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
The other half of me, I have to think twice about it, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
I'm sort of stopping myself from doing it. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
I think it's because I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions that... | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
It's gonna be really hard. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
But a move Down Under wouldn't be without heartache for Paul, either. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
He has a 12-year-old daughter called Alice from a previous marriage who wouldn't be coming with them. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
That's the big issue. She's with us most weekends. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
We have her for a big chunk of time over the summer holidays. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
School holidays as well, she comes and stays with us. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
She brings her friends to stay as well. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
It's a nice relaxed atmosphere for her here. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
Alice was really young when we were introduced and we've got a really close relationship, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
which is brilliant cos not a lot of people can say that when they've got stepchildren. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
The thought of leaving her... | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
Paul is optimistic about a solution. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
I may have rose-tinted glasses on and when it comes to the crunch, who knows? | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
But, at the moment, having spoken to my mum, she'd be planning to come out to Australia once, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:09
if not twice a year, and she said each of them times she would bring Alice out with her as well. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:14
Also, Alice has just turned 12. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
By the time we've moved out and settle down, she'll be 14, coming on 15. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
That only gives it one year, probably two years to... | 0:05:20 | 0:05:26
make her decision whether she'd want to come out there as and when she's 16. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
All of us have got a really, really close bond and I think we'd be really upset to leave her behind. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:36
But, I don't think he's thought that through. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
How he will feel if he has to leave her. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
If the decision were to move out there, it would be very hard, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
to control how I felt at that particular point. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
It's not actually hit him yet. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:50
He's very much a person where he'll jump in foot first | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
and think about it later, where I'm completely different. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
I mean, I actually think the kids will have a better lifestyle over there. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
It's just what we've got to go through to get there. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
To help the Williams discover whether it'll live up to their expectations, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
we offered them a week's trial of life in Adelaide in South Australia. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
We found three different lifestyles for our family to sample. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:22
Each one with the offer of a job and a brand new lifestyle for them to enjoy on their budget. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:28
First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
Where better to enjoy the Mediterranean climate | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
than Adelaide's lush, green countryside? | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Situated on the edge of Cleland Conservation Park | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
is the suburb of Green Hills, just 20 minutes from the city centre. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:46
A three-bedroom house here averages at £190,000. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
Not an enormous price to pay for a home in the beautiful Adelaide hills. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:56
The South Australia Police are currently looking for officers and are offering £22,000 a year. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:02
At Victor Harbour Police Station, Senior Constable, Andrew Mogg, is keen to meet you. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
I hear you're thinking of joining us. Let me show you around. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
OK, well, here's our police district. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
We patrol a lot of the rural, hilly country inland | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
and three coastal towns that we patrol as well. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
OK, so here we are on patrol, just outside Victor Harbour. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
We've got an unfortunately high incidence of road death here | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
in South Australia, so we do pay a fair bit of attention to that. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
When you get to Adelaide, give us a ring. It's a great place to live. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
So, that was the kind of lifestyle they could enjoy in the country. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
Let's take a look at what's possible in the city on their budget. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
Adelaide has something to keep the whole family entertained. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:45
Whether it be the cultural area of North Terrace | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
or Rundle Mall and the nearby markets. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
The neighbouring suburb of Prospect is a great place to live. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
Here, a spacious three-bedroom home will cost around £200,000. | 0:07:55 | 0:08:00
You could sample a day with the specialist police division, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
the Special Tasks And Rescue Force. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
To give us the brief is acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
This aircraft here is our primary aircraft for all police airborne operations. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
I'll now show you a few things that we do at Operation Section. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
Not only are we involved with helicopter operations at STAR group, | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
we respond to high-risk situations. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
We also deal with VIP protection, public order, search and rescue and crowd control. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
It's a dynamic and exciting place to work. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Be under no illusion, this is a serious job. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
We work hard, we train hard and we're a tight-knit unit | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
and we're proud of what we do. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
If you think you've got what it takes, when you're in Adelaide, call and we can talk about it. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
It looks like their lifestyle could shape up pretty well in the city. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:47
But what about a new life on the coast? | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
If laid-back living takes your fancy, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
the beautiful Adelaide Coast is the place to go. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
It's not just white sandy beaches and golden sunsets. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
There's a range of activities available. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
A short drive from the shops of Jetty Road, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
is Marino where you can pick up a family home for around £210,000. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
Whilst a little pricier than homes inland, this hilltop location makes for magnificent ocean views. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:15
But even the seaside needs watching over. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
For a starting salary of £22,000, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
you could join constables Bruce Rice and Kate Van. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
We're here at the control room of Glenelg police station. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
It's one of our smaller stations in a very nice, touristy area. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
As you've probably guessed, we're both from the UK. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
There are a number of differences that we've got over here, to what we had in the UK. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
One being that we carry a firearm and ammunition. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
Jetty Road in Glenelg has lots of bars, pubs and restaurants. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
Most of the offences that we'd have to deal here would be | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
public order offences and offences relating to alcohol. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
So, if you want to achieve more, come and work at Glenelg with South Australia Police. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
In all three options, Paul would be working for the South Australia Police | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
and therefore his starting wage would be the same. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
The country option offers a healthier lifestyle where the property's slightly cheaper. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:11
City living comes at a price with homes more expensive, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
but it's the only option with a helicopter division. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
The coastal option is expensive property-wise, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
but this is offset by a more laid-back lifestyle. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
Three very different possibilities for our family to try. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
So, which one suited them best? | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
MUSIC: "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
We thought the city option where the work involves helicopters | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
best fitted the Williams criteria for their week in Adelaide. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
And, after touching down on Aussie soil, the family are all too aware of just how far they've travelled. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:52
That's a long way. That is...that's a long way. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:57
It seems like two weeks ago we parked the car at Heathrow and came over here. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
It's just been... quite an experience. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
After the first part, we'd been flying for 13 hours | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
and we still had another seven, eight hours to go. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
Watched a lot of films. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
Their week ahead promises to be busy, but Jo's thoughts are already on more immediate plans. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:16
-Shower. -Shower, yeah! Smelly! -Clean teeth. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
Too much fur on teeth! | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
So, it's into the hire car and straight to their rental property. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
Their base for the week is a house right in the city. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
The Williams are staying in a two-storey Adelaide house that gives them everything they need. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:45
Watch this door. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
-Look at this. -Ooh! | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
-Nice. -Nice ain't it? | 0:11:53 | 0:11:54
It comes with three bedrooms... | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
-Nice, isn't it? -Yeah. -This is my room. | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
Oh, look at this. Very nice! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Have a look at the other room. Let's go and see. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
-Lovely, ain't it? -Yeah, very nice. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
..it's got nice, big wardrobes... | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
You've got one hanger. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Oh, yes! | 0:12:13 | 0:12:14
Oh, wow! | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Lovely, ain't it? | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
..and, most importantly... | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
We've got wine glasses, so that's good. That's all I need. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
But, we've saved the best bit till last. A hot tub in the garden. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:28
HE LAUGHS GHOULISHLY | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
The problem with that, girls, is children aren't allowed in it. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
-Yeah. They can just watch on the steps. -No, they can't! | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
They can. It's the Australian law. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
Hoh-hoh, hoh! | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
-Oh, feel that! -Oh, wow! Wow! -That's lovely. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:48
Oh, sorry about that! | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
THEY LAUGH | 0:12:51 | 0:12:52
It may be July, but that's the middle of winter in Adelaide. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
The sun's out, which is a good start. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
Very cold. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:01
I don't think we really prepared as well as we could have done. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
Bit of a baptism of fire. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
-But it's dry at the moment. -We're used to a lot colder, anyway, | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
-Well, you are. -Yeah. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
I've got a manly t-shirt, look. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
HE SHIVERS | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
-I'm sure we'll cope with that. -Yeah. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
The long flight's given them time to reflect on saying goodbye to Paul's elder daughter, Alice. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:23
To leave her was horrific. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
She was waiting for me when I came in, looking out the window, waved | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
and as soon as I walked in the door, she just sobbed her eyes out. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
-Went straight up to you. -Hmm. -You're starting now. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
Went straight up to you, gave you a hug, didn't leave her alone. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
She was just crying and crying and crying and how ever light-hearted | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
I tried to make the conversation, she just sobbed. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
Then that made us think, "Oh, flipping heck, what we doing?" | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
It just made me think, she's so upset now, after... | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
you know, two weeks, however long it is | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
and if we did make the decision to make it permanent, you know... | 0:13:53 | 0:13:58
it'd be awful for her, wouldn't it? | 0:13:58 | 0:14:00
-Oh! It would be awful for us. -Hmm. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
If this were the day we were moving and we weren't gonna come back... | 0:14:02 | 0:14:06
you know, you were crying with all your mates and the way Alice was and everything as well, | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
-I mean, if that was the day... -Hmm. -Oh, crikey! | 0:14:10 | 0:14:15
But, hey. Let's see, eh? | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
The Williams are anxious to see what Adelaide has in store, but with thoughts of missing Alice | 0:14:18 | 0:14:23
already on their minds, the whole trip could be in jeopardy before the week has even begun. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:29
In the UK, the Williams live in a three-bedroomed, semi-detached house | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
on the outskirts of Leicester, worth about £180,000. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:43
If they move to Australia, they would be looking to spend £200,000, | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
that's around 410,000 Australian dollars, | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
and would include a mortgage. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
But house prices in Adelaide aren't as cheap as they used to be, | 0:14:55 | 0:14:59
so, they may struggle to find a house within their budget. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
The first of the three properties we're showing the Williams | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
is in the suburb of Prospect, a stone's throw from the city centre. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
It's a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
and at 430,000 Australian dollars, or £210,000, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:19
it's slightly over their budget. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
-Oh, lovely! -Look at this! | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
-Ooh, this is nice... -Ooh, it is. -..isn't it? | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
-Nice. -Lovely. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
And straight away, they seem impressed. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
Look at the wardrobe. Look at this! | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
-This is your room! -Oh, I see, my room! | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
-Is this a dining room? -No. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
Reception room. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:43
-Nice and bright, everywhere. -It is. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
-My dad would like this. -Oh, fantastic! | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Look at this! | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
I would have it set up exactly the same as this. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
Oh, ain't it lovely? | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
Jo's spotted something she likes. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
-Now, that's what I call a wine rack. -Absolutely. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
It's really nice, yeah. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
-This is a real... -sort of family... -..yeah, party room. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
Absolutely gorgeous. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:08
-Do you wanna have a look? This is lovely, ain't it? -Yeah, it is. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
-Quite nice and warm. -It is, yeah. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
GIRLS LAUGH | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
-Oh, yeah! -Oh, my goodness. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
To stand here...cooking... | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
wine in there, all opened up, all friends gushing through. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:28
-Friends? -Well...people we borrowed. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
Very nice! | 0:16:33 | 0:16:34
This is a party house, isn't it? | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
It's nice. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:38
So we've established it's a party house, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
but has it fulfilled the rest of their needs? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
The only thing that puts me off is the bedrooms being on the front. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
Although they're gorgeous, I would prefer them upstairs. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:52
-Could you see us living here? -Yeah, definitely, yeah. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
It's just the bedroom situation, I would prefer... | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
So, this house would be ideal for them if only it had an upstairs. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
So, perhaps property two will fare better. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
Being further out of town means they could get more for their money. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
Set amongst the Adelaide Hills, this house is again a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:16
But this time, there's that all important second storey. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
-What do you think to this, then? -Gorgeous. -Fantastic. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
Nice and high. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
-Completely different, ain't it? -Talk about quiet. Listen to this. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
It's a bespoke cabin. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
The Williams would have to shell out 420,000 | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
or around £205,000 to make this their home. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:40
The sound of all the birds. You really are in the... | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
-Yes. -A parrot just flew by there. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
It's lovely. Just very, very peaceful. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
Very quiet, very tranquil. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
The birds singing. This is, on first impressions, very nice. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:54
Judging by their reactions to the exterior, | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
this could be their perfect house, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
but it's what's on the inside that really counts. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:03
-Oh, it's gorgeous! -Look at this! | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
Oh, wow! This is lovely. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
Just the whole thing, it's just so...open. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
-Talk about open-plan. -The openness is lovely. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
Oh, it's an old stove-type thing, look. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
Do you know how many rooms it's got up here? | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
-Oh, look at that! -It's a nice room, isn't it? | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
So far, so good, but Jo's spotted a problem... | 0:18:23 | 0:18:27
-They're quite small though. The rooms are quite small. -Yeah. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
..or two... | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32
There's not a lot of storage space. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
..or three. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
It's a shower room, ain't it? There's no bath there. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
Oh, there's no bath, yeah. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
Thank goodness Ellie's found something to like. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
It's just nice and pink. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
I know. I thought you were gonna say because it's pink. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
For you two, you'd have to share a room. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
Cos this is it, really. That one and this room. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
Hang on, this property has three bedrooms, so where is the third? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
Oh, it's another bedroom. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
It's got pink bits on, Abs. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
Oh, look. It's for, like, guests, I suppose. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
I suppose it would be, yeah. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
-Would you put the kids down here? -No. No way. No, definitely not. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
-Why not? -No. I'd prefer them upstairs with me. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
-Where you can see them? -Yes. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
So, what's the verdict? | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
It's a lovely home and they've made it really nice, haven't they? But it's not really for us. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:23
First impressions are great. You walk in and wow! | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
-It's the real wow factor. -Absolutely. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
It's the practicalities of it all afterwards that throw it. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
It's a weekend break house, I think. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
Plus, as well, I think I'd feel a bit isolated | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
if I was to be here on my own with the kids if Paul's working. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
I think I'd feel a bit scared on my own at night-time, | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
cos it's quite a creaky house. With us going around you can hear it creaking. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:47
At night-time I don't think I'd sleep. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
Do you like snakes and spiders, Jo? | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
I really do not like snakes and spiders. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Snakes'd be fine. That's OK, yeah. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
But spiders, anything that flies, apart from birds, I absolutely hate. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:01
-Hate. -So, countryside's quite good for you, then? -No. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
If I had lots of money, yes, you could get this as well | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
and have it as a weekend retreat | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
and have the one in the city as well, to stay there. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
But practical, money-wise, in the city, yes. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
Here, hmm, not really. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
So, they've found themselves a country getaway, | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
but to live in, it gets the thumbs down. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
Let's hope property three is more to their liking. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
It's a four-bedroom house, so bigger than the last | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
and at 470,000, or £230,000, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:36
it's the most expensive of the three properties. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
And, with stunning views over the ocean, it's off to a great start. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:47
What can you see over there? | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
-Look at that view! That is beautiful, isn't it? -Yeah, it is. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
Look at all that out there as well, look. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
-Shall we have a look inside? -Yeah. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
Oh, this is lovely. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
-Oh, wow! -This is nice and comfy. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
Yeah, really nice. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
It's huge. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:06
This is a big room as well, ain't it? | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
-There you go, look, Jo. Your stash. -Yeah. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
With a lock on it, padlocked. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
Yeah, that's to keep you out. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:16
This is gorgeous. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
Oh, look at this, girls! | 0:21:21 | 0:21:22
-Fantastic. -It's really nice. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
Oh, wow! Look at that. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
Absolutely stunning. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
Imagine, you're sitting here, it's either sunset or sunrise... | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
With a glass of wine. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
-From the storage. -From next door. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
Oh, that sounds nice. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
And it's a sign they can really see themselves living here. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
Oh, this is a nice room. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
-Oh, yes. -Isn't that nice? | 0:21:44 | 0:21:46
-This is lovely. -It is, isn't it? | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
The other good thing about this would be the view again out there. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
Yeah, it's gorgeous. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
-This is nice, as well. -Oh, yeah. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
I'm confused now, which room would be ours. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
With a choice of not one, but three reception rooms, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
a large open-plan kitchen and vistas from every window, | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
this is ticking all the right boxes | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
and they haven't seen the outside yet. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
Wow, look at this! It's nice to see lawn, actually. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
Yeah, it is, ain't it? Yeah. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
Look at that view. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
There's a bit down there with a fence, look. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
-That's beautiful, ain't it? -It is. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
-Absolutely gorgeous. -You could wave to the neighbours. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
-Paul, don't do that! -There's a bloke over there, I was waving at him. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
He'll think you're strange. You just... Stop it! | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
What? It's what you do when you're neighbourly. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
I don't want to go now. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
There's even space for a pool if they wanted. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
So, do we have a winner? | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
This one in particular is fantastic. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
It's by far the best one. It's what I had in my mind prior to coming out | 0:22:47 | 0:22:51
and having had a look around it now, it's just confirmed | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
that you can get some good quality properties for decent prices. | 0:22:55 | 0:23:01
It would be a stretch, money-wise, but we could afford this. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
-It's affordable, isn't it? -To think we could live | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
in somewhere like this, you'd never believe it normally. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
Obviously, there'd be certain things that we'd change, but you do that as you go along. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:15
Having looked around, it's minimal changes. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
No, it's definitely a dream house for us. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
Wow! That's a result. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
And, being close to the beach, it could also provide them | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
with that ultimate Aussie lifestyle they're after. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
The Williams have seen a real variety of properties. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
The first, on the market for £210,000, was modern and open-plan, | 0:23:30 | 0:23:36
but lacked an upstairs. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:37
House number two had character and was cheaper at £205,000, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:42
but was impractical and too small. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
It was the final property that really hit the mark, | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
providing everything the Williams wanted, | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
although the £230,000 price tag means they'd have to stretch themselves. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
So, do they prefer properties in the UK or what they've seen in Australia? | 0:23:55 | 0:24:00
It's time to vote. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
We've made our minds up with regards to what we want to do | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
and we're going to vote for... | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
..Australia! | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
The Williams family felt they could find a suitable property | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
in Australia, but it all depends on Paul finding the right job | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
to pay for the new lifestyle. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
He loves his work in the UK, but will he be so keen | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
on what the South Australian Police have to offer? | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
Back home, Paul is a police air observer, | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
but a move to Australia could mean a massive sacrifice for him. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
It's a hard decision to make because I will be taking a step backwards. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:43
With the length of service I've got, | 0:24:43 | 0:24:45
I'm being paid as a senior police officer, Police Constable, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
to transfer out to the South Australia Police, | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
you then start on a cadet's wage again, which is a huge drop. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
I would be back out on the beat, | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
in the beat cars, walking around the beat, | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00
after 18 months and you're out of your probationary period, | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
your money is then raised somewhat to encompass the service that you've got back in this country, | 0:25:02 | 0:25:08
but initially it would be a huge financial burden. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
Today, he's off to see the Special Tasks And Rescue Force | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
to find out about his future job prospects in the South Australia Police. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:21
On the back of what's happening today, | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
there is going to be some big decisions made that could alter | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
my career path as well as my family's life. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
So, it's a huge decision I'll be ultimately making, | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
with regards to what me and the family are gonna be doing. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
Meanwhile, Jo's taken Ellie and Abby to check out | 0:25:35 | 0:25:39
Adelaide Aquatic Centre as she comes to terms with the reality | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
of being in Australia. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
Prior to coming out to Adelaide, | 0:25:44 | 0:25:46
all of us really, had got complete mixed feelings. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:50
And the Friday before I actually finished work, | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
people were coming down from the offices upstairs | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
and giving me a hug and saying, "Have a lovely time." | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
As if I was going forever and... at that split-second I thought, | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
"Crikey, this is how it's gonna be if we did decide to go." | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
And the absence of her stepdaughter, Alice, | 0:26:05 | 0:26:07
is continually playing on her mind. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
I've got my two, but it always seems that a piece of us is missing and that's really, really difficult. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:16
But is Paul coping any better? | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
You can tell it's on his mind. As it is all of us. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
But the girls have brought pictures of her and they're in their rooms | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
and we've got a picture of her as well and it's just really strange | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
with her not being here as well. This will be a tester for him, I think. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
Paul's meeting acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy, | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
who gives him a tour around the hangar. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
-Hi, Brett. How you doing? I'm Paul. -Come in. I'll show you around. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
Lovely, thanks very much. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
This is the EC130, Paul. This is our primary police helicopter at STAR group. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:47
It's used mainly for high-speed pursuits | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
and surveillance and looking for missing people. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
So, as you can see, the FLIR operator will sit on the right-hand side here. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56
FLIR being Forward Looking Infra-Red, which you know all about. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
Yeah, we've got the same one. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:01
Do you have the live feedback to a communication base? | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
We have a microwave downlink. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
A lot of our firearms teams, like your STAR team, would have portable, hand-held receivers as well. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:12
If we were at a firearms job, for example, they have the hand-held terminal there, | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
we'll be giving them pictures and they can see what's around the scene, | 0:27:16 | 0:27:20
360 degrees around there as well. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
-How about we go for a fly? -Fantastic. If that's all right? | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
On a training mission for the crew, | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
Brett gives Paul the opportunity to see first-hand | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
the job he could be doing. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
As Paul get a bird's-eye view of the city, | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
Jo's thinking about the effect a move away from friends and family | 0:27:37 | 0:27:41
would have on her and the girls. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:43
Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it, | 0:27:43 | 0:27:48
I'd absolutely hate it. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:49
I wouldn't like to be at home while the kids were at school. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
I think I would get extremely homesick | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
and it wouldn't be beneficial to me at all. I'd need to be with people | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
and try to establish some sort of network of friends, again. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
I still don't know whether I could just up sticks | 0:28:02 | 0:28:04
and leave everybody behind. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:06
But, I've come here with an open mind. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:09
We'll see how we go. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:11
Did you enjoy that? | 0:28:11 | 0:28:12
As he comes back down to earth, the family's whole future | 0:28:13 | 0:28:17
in Australia hinges on Paul asking some vital questions. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
It's a huge risk to give up the position and salary | 0:28:21 | 0:28:24
he has in the UK and go back to being a cadet. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
But how long would he have to wait before he could get the job he really wants? | 0:28:27 | 0:28:31
I've got nearly 15 years' experience as a bobby in England, | 0:28:31 | 0:28:35
would I be able to join and then come straight on to | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
this helicopter unit here? | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40
No, you couldn't. What you'd need to do is go through the academy | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
and after the nine-month period, | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
you'd go out on the road for 15 months as a general duties police officer. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
After that you'd have a couple of years on the road | 0:28:48 | 0:28:51
and then you'd be able to apply to come down to STAR group. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:54
Once at STAR Group, there's another probationary period of 12 months. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:58
After that period you'd be able to apply to come to the helicopters. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
That's not what he wanted to hear. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:03
With the knowledge that it could take longer than he thought to reach his goal, | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
Paul's left wondering if this could all be worth it. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10
They're a great bunch of people and if I worked here, I'm sure I'd be very, very happy. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:15
But, there's lots of hoops and lots of steps to go through prior to getting to this particular point. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:20
No doubt it's going to be extremely difficult for Paul | 0:29:20 | 0:29:23
to make the transition from the UK | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25
and he's an experienced police officer. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:27
Having said that, it's going to be a three to four year period | 0:29:27 | 0:29:30
before Paul even looks at a helicopter. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:32
It's just how much he wants to be here | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
and his determination and motivation to do it. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:38
It's like taking ten huge steps backwards, | 0:29:38 | 0:29:42
but that has got to be balanced up against the lifestyle that you'd be leading out here anyway. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:46
So, big decisions to make. It's a long time to wait | 0:29:46 | 0:29:51
and ultimately, that's not guaranteed a job, either. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:54
It's a job I'd have to go for and get through the selection process. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:58
There's a lot to think about. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
If he decides he can't wait, Paul's Australian dream could be over. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:04
So, how will he vote on work? | 0:30:04 | 0:30:06
OK, I've been out on the STAR Team today, I've seen how they work, | 0:30:06 | 0:30:10
I've met the blokes, I've had a fly in the helicopter. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:13
I've got to weigh up whether this is a place for me to work | 0:30:13 | 0:30:17
or whether I stay within the UK. | 0:30:17 | 0:30:19
So, after all this, I'd have to say I've got to vote for... | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
..UK! | 0:30:24 | 0:30:26 | |
Go to any UK supermarket and you're faced with a huge array of wine from Down Under. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:35
Australia is the world's third largest exporter of wine, selling more to us Brits than the French. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:41
So, what's the reason behind its success? | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
The thing about Australian wine is it delivers on all levels. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:49
So, you've got relatively inexpensive, good value, | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
well-made wines, which have really kind of made the market in the UK. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:56
But equally so, you've got lots of small producers | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
making wonderful regional wines, right up the food chain. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
There are over 60 wine-growing regions in the country | 0:31:03 | 0:31:07
and over 2,000 wine producers, | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
meaning a huge variety of bottles to choose from. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
I suppose the stereotype of Australian wine | 0:31:13 | 0:31:15
is big, ripe, powerful Shiraz and big, ripe, golden Chardonnay. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:20
But we have areas, I mean, an area like this, the Adelaide Hills, | 0:31:20 | 0:31:23
is similar in temperature to Burgundy. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
It really is quite cold. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
So, the wines we produce are more elegant, | 0:31:28 | 0:31:30
more delicate, slightly higher acid. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:33
They're not these robust, heroic Shirazes, perhaps, | 0:31:33 | 0:31:36
that our reputation was built on. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:38
So, things are looking Rose for Australian wine producers. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:43
People who, initially, were just happy drinking an inexpensive, | 0:31:43 | 0:31:48
unpretentious glass of Shiraz | 0:31:48 | 0:31:49
are now going, "Oh, that's pretty good, I wonder what else they do?" | 0:31:49 | 0:31:53
So, what we're finding is that people who initially started on some of the bigger brands, | 0:31:53 | 0:31:58
are now increasingly interested in the smaller producers and they're looking for the diversity. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:04
And advice to the British wine drinker? | 0:32:04 | 0:32:07
It just requires people to be a bit experimental and try some things that they haven't before, | 0:32:07 | 0:32:12
because you might discover something that's just fabulous. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:16
Paul Williams has fond memories of the time he spent in Australia | 0:32:20 | 0:32:24
a few years ago and firmly believes that, as a family, they could have a better quality of life Down Under. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:30
I spent 10 days out there and I fell in love with the country. | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
Wife Jo is happy with her life in the UK | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
and has mixed feelings about moving. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
Half of me is really excited to go | 0:32:38 | 0:32:40
and the other half of me, I have to think twice about it. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
I think it's cos I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions. | 0:32:43 | 0:32:47
It's going to be really hard. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:48
But she did fall in love with a house in Adelaide. | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
We could never be able to afford this in England. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:54
It's definitely a dream house for us. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:56
Hanging over everything, though, is the prospect they'd be leaving | 0:32:56 | 0:32:59
Paul's elder daughter, Alice, behind if they did decide to move. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:03
It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?" | 0:33:03 | 0:33:07
It's something I'm gonna have to think long and hard about. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:11
Will hearing messages from friends and family back home make the decision even harder? | 0:33:11 | 0:33:17
-Oh, dear me! -Right, book the taxi. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:20
The news from the police was a blow to Paul's hopes of moving, | 0:33:24 | 0:33:29
so they're taking the kids to Adelaide Zoo | 0:33:29 | 0:33:31
to see if a taste of the Aussie lifestyle | 0:33:31 | 0:33:33
will give them some encouragement. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:36
Hello. Oh, look! | 0:33:39 | 0:33:41
Ah! | 0:33:45 | 0:33:46 | |
Oh, yeah. It's lovely. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
-So, Jo, would you swap the kids for a koala? -No. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:51
Husband, probably! | 0:33:51 | 0:33:53
-Very clever! -I'll go with you, Dad. -Thanks, babes. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:58
-I get so much abuse from you, it's unbelievable. -You love it, you know you do. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
Today sums it up for us, really. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:03
As a family, we've come out, we've experienced things we've never experienced before. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:08
I've held a koala, I've fed and stroked kangaroos. It's been great. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:11
And for the girls, as well, it's a real experience for them, as well. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:15
That's the positive thing about being kids, | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
they adapt to every situation you put them in. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:20
-How you doin'? -I'm all right thanks, how are you? | 0:34:20 | 0:34:23
THEY LAUGH | 0:34:23 | 0:34:24
-Hello. -You'll be all right. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
MUSIC: "Love At First Sight" by Kylie Minogue | 0:34:31 | 0:34:34
So, the girls are fitting into the Aussie way of life, but what about Jo? | 0:34:47 | 0:34:53
I've noticed, in the last couple of days, she's been a lot quieter | 0:34:53 | 0:34:57
than she perhaps normally would be | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
and I think she's missing friends and family and people around her. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:03
There's not been the contact that she thought there would have been, | 0:35:03 | 0:35:06
mainly for the time difference and it's only really feasible to ring | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
either early in the morning or later in the evening | 0:35:09 | 0:35:12
and the messages she's had, are starting to get to her, I think. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:16
Since he's pointed that out I feel, "Yeah, you're probably right." | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
I probably am missing everybody and I'm sort of... | 0:35:19 | 0:35:21
that's probably my way of coping, again, but... | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
I'm going to ring everybody tonight, because that's what the matter is. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
The impact a move to Australia would have on Paul's daughter, Alice, | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
is never far from their thoughts. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:33
Alice, bless her, she'd have loved this, she really would have. It would've been great. | 0:35:33 | 0:35:38
Living away from Alice, it's become a lot more real. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:40
If we were to move, I know I, personally, wouldn't be able to cope | 0:35:40 | 0:35:43
with leaving her behind and only her coming on holidays. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:47
The biggest deciding factor will be, what will happen with Alice, | 0:35:47 | 0:35:51
how she'll feel, what we can agree amongst ourselves as a family, | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
including Alice and also Alice's mum, as well. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
It would be a huge, huge decision if it were a permanent move | 0:35:57 | 0:36:01
and that's perhaps a good reality check. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:02
That I had these rose-tinted glasses of how small the world is, | 0:36:02 | 0:36:06
it's only a day's flight, what with the internet, web cams. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:12
I was very flippant with them sorts of comments. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
It is a long, long way. | 0:36:15 | 0:36:16
If we did come out here, if it was the right thing to do, | 0:36:16 | 0:36:19
we'd have to wait and bring her with us. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:21
It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?" | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
The Williams have spent a day of quality time together, | 0:36:24 | 0:36:28
something they say they want more of. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:30
But it's also reminded them that moving here would come with one enormous price to pay. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:35
With so much to consider, how will they vote on lifestyle? | 0:36:36 | 0:36:40
-Had a good day? -Yep. | 0:36:40 | 0:36:42
And we like the way that how friendly people are, | 0:36:42 | 0:36:45
how well looked after the animals are, | 0:36:45 | 0:36:47
and it was just well laid out. | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
So, as a family, we're going to vote for... | 0:36:49 | 0:36:51
..Australia! | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
It's been a week of tough decisions and it's about to get tougher still. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:03
How will the Williamses feel when confronted with the thoughts | 0:37:03 | 0:37:06
of their friends and family back home? | 0:37:06 | 0:37:08
We put together some messages to remind them of the people they'd be leaving behind. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:16
BOTH: Hello, Jo, Paul, Ellie and Abbey. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:18
Mum and Dad loves you lots. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
He's a big clown, but we love him. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
He's the life and soul of the duty sometimes | 0:37:24 | 0:37:26
when it's dead at 2am, so, yeah, we'll miss him. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:30
He's a nice guy, a good guy, and we'll miss his family, as well. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
We are close, yeah, we are close | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
and we love to be together, we can make each other laugh so much. | 0:37:37 | 0:37:42
It's become more, sort of, an extended family | 0:37:42 | 0:37:45
rather than just neighbours. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:48
She classes us as sisters, not friends. | 0:37:48 | 0:37:53
Which I feel very privileged about. | 0:37:53 | 0:37:55
Erm, she's very sensitive, very kind, | 0:37:55 | 0:37:58
which is where the missing of family bit will come in...for Jo. | 0:37:58 | 0:38:03
The emotional tie, yeah, yeah. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:06
But I don't think that's insurmountable. | 0:38:06 | 0:38:08
I think it's something they're going to be able to try and take on board | 0:38:08 | 0:38:12
as a foursome. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:14
I think Jo would probably struggle...for a bit. | 0:38:14 | 0:38:17
That would be her main... | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
you know, she'd miss everybody. | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
We've known each other a long time | 0:38:22 | 0:38:23
and the only downfall is, when you move somewhere, | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
you can't just meet people and have the same relationship overnight. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:30
I can't imagine being without her. I can't imagine life without her. | 0:38:30 | 0:38:35
I can't imagine not being able to pick up the phone and say, | 0:38:35 | 0:38:39
"I'll be round in ten minutes for a coffee". | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41
It's a fact that Alice couldn't go with them | 0:38:41 | 0:38:44
because her mum wouldn't contemplate it for a second. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
So, it's a fact and I think Paul would live with that fact | 0:38:47 | 0:38:50
until such time as it could be changed by Alice moving to them. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:54
Paul will find it difficult. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56
I think his relationship with Alice is wonderful | 0:38:56 | 0:39:01
and the times he has with her when she comes here at weekends are fun. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:05
For the girls, Abbey and Ellie, to leave their half-sister Alice | 0:39:05 | 0:39:09
it will really... | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
it would be a bit of a wrench for them. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
I think that Alice is going to find it difficult. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
But Alice is a very understanding girl and I think, | 0:39:17 | 0:39:22
in time, will appreciate the reasons behind them going, | 0:39:22 | 0:39:27
should they decide to go permanently. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:29
Jo, I hope it's everything Paul said it was | 0:39:29 | 0:39:33
and that you're enjoying it, too. | 0:39:33 | 0:39:34
-Oh, dear me. -Right, book the taxi. | 0:39:41 | 0:39:45
All right, babes? | 0:39:45 | 0:39:46
Thanks, darling. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:50
That was lovely, seeing everyone, weren't it? | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
-Quite strange seeing them all here, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:39:53 | 0:39:55
Makes it all real. | 0:39:55 | 0:39:58
Oh, dear. | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
Is it seeing everybody again? | 0:40:05 | 0:40:07
The Williams family from Leicestershire came to Adelaide, | 0:40:14 | 0:40:18
hoping to find a change of pace and a better standard of living. | 0:40:18 | 0:40:22
This is gorgeous. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:25
-Oh my goodness, it's lovely. -Fantastic. -It's really, really nice. | 0:40:25 | 0:40:29
But Paul discovered there would be a long wait | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
before he got to use his skills as a police air observer. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:35
It's going to be a three to four year period | 0:40:35 | 0:40:37
before Paul even looks at a helicopter. | 0:40:37 | 0:40:40
It's a long time to wait. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:41
Watching messages from loved ones back in the UK | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
has really hit home what a move to Oz would entail. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:48
Oh, dear me. | 0:40:49 | 0:40:50
As their week in Adelaide draws to a close, | 0:40:54 | 0:40:57
Paul and Jo have been wrestling with a heart-wrenching decision. | 0:40:57 | 0:41:01
What Australia has to offer is quite positive, | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
but it's just whether I can leave behind what we've got at the moment. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
You make friends anywhere, | 0:41:06 | 0:41:08
but you always keep your true friends, don't you? | 0:41:08 | 0:41:11
It's the support network we've got there. | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
So, that would be really hard for me to let go. | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
And Paul is beginning to face the grim reality | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
of whether Alice really would choose to join them. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
I think if we were to move out here and Alice decided not to come out here, I'd be gutted. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:26
Ultimately, she's my daughter. I love her to bits. | 0:41:26 | 0:41:29
She's a huge part of my life. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:31
We're very, very close as a father and daughter | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
and I would always want it to be like that. | 0:41:34 | 0:41:37
And for her to make the decision, if she were to make the decision, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:41
in not coming out here, it'd be heart-wrenching. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
The Williams are faced with a tough dilemma. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:49
They've fallen in love with the homes and lifestyle, | 0:41:49 | 0:41:52
but is that enough? | 0:41:52 | 0:41:54
A vote to move would mean considerably less contact with Alice, | 0:41:54 | 0:41:57
who might eventually choose to join them. | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
But, realistically, how long could they bear to be apart? | 0:42:00 | 0:42:04
It's time to vote on their future. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
We're at the end of our week in Adelaide and we've had a really good time. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
But it's also made us realise what we've got at home | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
and how much things at home mean to us, whether it be relatives, | 0:42:12 | 0:42:16
friends, work, family. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
So, as a result of our trip, Ellie, what are we going to do? | 0:42:18 | 0:42:21
We're going to vote for... | 0:42:21 | 0:42:23
..UK! | 0:42:25 | 0:42:27 | |
Now I've had the opportunity to think about it | 0:42:27 | 0:42:30
put things in order and make a decision in my mind, it's a relief. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:34
This country, I'm sure, would offer a lovely life for us and the kids, | 0:42:34 | 0:42:37
but without my family and friends and Alice, it's just not right. | 0:42:37 | 0:42:43
You're gonna miss just so much of her life, | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
of her growing up, of her experiencing things with us. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:50
It's something that has compounded how I feel. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
The fact that you need to appreciate what you've got, | 0:42:53 | 0:42:56
who you've got around you | 0:42:56 | 0:42:58
and just enjoy everything that happens from the future onwards. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:01
Well, I just couldn't do it. | 0:43:01 | 0:43:02
It would be unbearable to think about leaving her behind. | 0:43:02 | 0:43:05
I'm looking forward to going back and giving her a big hug and telling her, | 0:43:05 | 0:43:09
"It's going to be fine". | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11
Hearing from their loved ones threw up many issues for the Williamses | 0:43:12 | 0:43:16
and it's a thought-provoking end to a week of ups and downs. | 0:43:16 | 0:43:19
