Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under,

0:00:040:00:07

the show that catapults a British family right across

0:00:070:00:10

the other side of the world

0:00:100:00:11

to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:110:00:15

Paul and Jo Williams are determined to see if they can find a better life in Australia.

0:00:150:00:20

To go there would fulfil a huge ambition for Paul.

0:00:200:00:23

I'm seeing it for the four of us as a real adventure.

0:00:230:00:25

Because we've been talking about it for so long

0:00:250:00:27

and it's something that I've wanted to do, it's like it's not real.

0:00:270:00:30

And to emigrate would be a hard decision for Jo.

0:00:300:00:34

I think I'd get extremely homesick.

0:00:340:00:36

Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it - I'd absolutely hate it.

0:00:360:00:42

And it would mean an enormous sacrifice.

0:00:420:00:44

Paul's daughter, Alice, from a previous marriage, wouldn't be able to move with them.

0:00:440:00:49

He's optimistic she'd join them when she's old enough.

0:00:490:00:52

If we were to move out here and Alice decide not to come,

0:00:520:00:55

I'd be gutted. Ultimately, she's my daughter, I love her to bits.

0:00:550:00:59

She's a huge part of my life.

0:00:590:01:00

If she were to decide to not come out here, it'd be heart-wrenching. It really would.

0:01:000:01:04

So, will that leave the Williams' plans

0:01:040:01:06

to move hanging in the balance?

0:01:060:01:08

Or will they decide to go where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:080:01:12

For many Brits, the gloomy economic forecast is making

0:01:340:01:39

Australia's relatively sunny economy look tempting.

0:01:390:01:42

And, for anyone who's under 45 and on the skills shortage list,

0:01:420:01:46

a new life Down Under could be a thrilling possibility.

0:01:460:01:49

Last year, over 60 Brits a day made that leap,

0:01:490:01:53

but how tough was that decision?

0:01:530:01:56

We've given 20 British families the chance they've always dreamed of,

0:01:560:02:00

to swap their lives in the UK for a new life Down Under.

0:02:000:02:04

After a week, they'll get to vote one way or the other.

0:02:040:02:07

Will they stay in the UK or will they move to Australia?

0:02:070:02:11

The Williams family lives in a village in Leicestershire

0:02:110:02:14

and consists of Dad, Paul, Mum, Jo and their daughters,

0:02:140:02:18

seven-year-old Ellie and Abby, who's five.

0:02:180:02:22

Paul is a police officer for the Leicestershire police,

0:02:220:02:26

who spends most of the day, quite literally, with his head in the clouds.

0:02:260:02:30

No, this isn't Airwolf. Paul's work is a lot more serious.

0:02:340:02:38

My job here is an air observer.

0:02:420:02:44

I've been at this unit now for four years.

0:02:440:02:47

The jobs that we do vary.

0:02:470:02:48

They can vary from searching an area for suspects

0:02:480:02:51

that may have hidden in people's gardens or in fields,

0:02:510:02:54

through to searching for missing people.

0:02:540:02:56

But we mainly support police officers on the ground.

0:02:560:02:58

In my eyes, one of the best jobs you can do.

0:02:580:03:01

For years, it's been Paul's big dream to live in Australia.

0:03:010:03:04

A friend of mine moved to Australia about six, seven years ago now.

0:03:040:03:08

I was lucky enough to go and visit him, on my own, it was great.

0:03:080:03:12

I spent 10 days out there and...

0:03:120:03:14

like him, I absolutely fell in love with the country.

0:03:140:03:17

Then I started to look on a website,

0:03:170:03:19

realised that British police officers were quite sought after.

0:03:190:03:23

Jo's hoping a move to Oz would give them a much needed change of pace.

0:03:230:03:28

We've got a very fast lifestyle.

0:03:280:03:29

I work, Paul works. You know, the kids are at school.

0:03:290:03:32

He works shifts and it's very on the go all the time

0:03:320:03:36

and from what we've heard, it's very much a slower pace of life.

0:03:360:03:39

Deep down, that's what we really want.

0:03:390:03:41

But they'll have to be quick.

0:03:410:03:43

Time is of the essence when it comes to Paul's job.

0:03:430:03:46

The concerning thing, at the moment, is the fact that I've heard

0:03:460:03:50

that South Australia police, this year, the 2008-2009,

0:03:500:03:53

will be the last recruiting campaign that they'll be doing.

0:03:530:03:56

It's literally make or break time. Will we? Won't we? Sort of thing.

0:03:560:03:59

Half of me is really excited to go.

0:03:590:04:02

You know, I can't wait. Every time I think about it

0:04:020:04:05

my stomach goes over and I think it's gonna be brilliant.

0:04:050:04:07

The other half of me, I have to think twice about it,

0:04:070:04:10

I'm sort of stopping myself from doing it.

0:04:100:04:13

I think it's because I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions that...

0:04:130:04:17

It's gonna be really hard.

0:04:170:04:19

But a move Down Under wouldn't be without heartache for Paul, either.

0:04:190:04:23

He has a 12-year-old daughter called Alice from a previous marriage who wouldn't be coming with them.

0:04:230:04:28

That's the big issue. She's with us most weekends.

0:04:280:04:32

We have her for a big chunk of time over the summer holidays.

0:04:320:04:35

School holidays as well, she comes and stays with us.

0:04:350:04:38

She brings her friends to stay as well.

0:04:380:04:40

It's a nice relaxed atmosphere for her here.

0:04:400:04:42

Alice was really young when we were introduced and we've got a really close relationship,

0:04:420:04:47

which is brilliant cos not a lot of people can say that when they've got stepchildren.

0:04:470:04:51

The thought of leaving her...

0:04:510:04:52

Paul is optimistic about a solution.

0:04:550:04:58

I may have rose-tinted glasses on and when it comes to the crunch, who knows?

0:04:580:05:03

But, at the moment, having spoken to my mum, she'd be planning to come out to Australia once,

0:05:030:05:09

if not twice a year, and she said each of them times she would bring Alice out with her as well.

0:05:090:05:14

Also, Alice has just turned 12.

0:05:140:05:16

By the time we've moved out and settle down, she'll be 14, coming on 15.

0:05:160:05:20

That only gives it one year, probably two years to...

0:05:200:05:26

make her decision whether she'd want to come out there as and when she's 16.

0:05:260:05:30

All of us have got a really, really close bond and I think we'd be really upset to leave her behind.

0:05:300:05:36

But, I don't think he's thought that through.

0:05:360:05:38

How he will feel if he has to leave her.

0:05:380:05:42

If the decision were to move out there, it would be very hard,

0:05:420:05:45

to control how I felt at that particular point.

0:05:450:05:49

It's not actually hit him yet.

0:05:490:05:50

He's very much a person where he'll jump in foot first

0:05:500:05:53

and think about it later, where I'm completely different.

0:05:530:05:56

I mean, I actually think the kids will have a better lifestyle over there.

0:05:560:06:00

It's just what we've got to go through to get there.

0:06:000:06:02

To help the Williams discover whether it'll live up to their expectations,

0:06:040:06:08

we offered them a week's trial of life in Adelaide in South Australia.

0:06:080:06:12

We found three different lifestyles for our family to sample.

0:06:130:06:17

One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast.

0:06:170:06:22

Each one with the offer of a job and a brand new lifestyle for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:06:220:06:28

First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:06:280:06:31

Where better to enjoy the Mediterranean climate

0:06:320:06:35

than Adelaide's lush, green countryside?

0:06:350:06:38

Situated on the edge of Cleland Conservation Park

0:06:380:06:41

is the suburb of Green Hills, just 20 minutes from the city centre.

0:06:410:06:46

A three-bedroom house here averages at £190,000.

0:06:460:06:50

Not an enormous price to pay for a home in the beautiful Adelaide hills.

0:06:500:06:56

The South Australia Police are currently looking for officers and are offering £22,000 a year.

0:06:560:07:02

At Victor Harbour Police Station, Senior Constable, Andrew Mogg, is keen to meet you.

0:07:020:07:07

I hear you're thinking of joining us. Let me show you around.

0:07:070:07:10

OK, well, here's our police district.

0:07:100:07:12

We patrol a lot of the rural, hilly country inland

0:07:120:07:15

and three coastal towns that we patrol as well.

0:07:150:07:18

OK, so here we are on patrol, just outside Victor Harbour.

0:07:190:07:23

We've got an unfortunately high incidence of road death here

0:07:230:07:26

in South Australia, so we do pay a fair bit of attention to that.

0:07:260:07:29

When you get to Adelaide, give us a ring. It's a great place to live.

0:07:290:07:32

So, that was the kind of lifestyle they could enjoy in the country.

0:07:320:07:35

Let's take a look at what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:07:350:07:39

Adelaide has something to keep the whole family entertained.

0:07:400:07:45

Whether it be the cultural area of North Terrace

0:07:450:07:47

or Rundle Mall and the nearby markets.

0:07:470:07:50

The neighbouring suburb of Prospect is a great place to live.

0:07:500:07:55

Here, a spacious three-bedroom home will cost around £200,000.

0:07:550:08:00

You could sample a day with the specialist police division,

0:08:000:08:04

the Special Tasks And Rescue Force.

0:08:040:08:07

To give us the brief is acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy.

0:08:070:08:11

This aircraft here is our primary aircraft for all police airborne operations.

0:08:110:08:15

I'll now show you a few things that we do at Operation Section.

0:08:150:08:18

Not only are we involved with helicopter operations at STAR group,

0:08:180:08:22

we respond to high-risk situations.

0:08:220:08:24

We also deal with VIP protection, public order, search and rescue and crowd control.

0:08:240:08:28

It's a dynamic and exciting place to work.

0:08:280:08:30

Be under no illusion, this is a serious job.

0:08:300:08:33

We work hard, we train hard and we're a tight-knit unit

0:08:330:08:36

and we're proud of what we do.

0:08:360:08:38

If you think you've got what it takes, when you're in Adelaide, call and we can talk about it.

0:08:380:08:42

It looks like their lifestyle could shape up pretty well in the city.

0:08:420:08:47

But what about a new life on the coast?

0:08:470:08:49

If laid-back living takes your fancy,

0:08:500:08:53

the beautiful Adelaide Coast is the place to go.

0:08:530:08:56

It's not just white sandy beaches and golden sunsets.

0:08:560:08:59

There's a range of activities available.

0:08:590:09:01

A short drive from the shops of Jetty Road,

0:09:010:09:04

is Marino where you can pick up a family home for around £210,000.

0:09:040:09:09

Whilst a little pricier than homes inland, this hilltop location makes for magnificent ocean views.

0:09:090:09:15

But even the seaside needs watching over.

0:09:150:09:19

For a starting salary of £22,000,

0:09:190:09:21

you could join constables Bruce Rice and Kate Van.

0:09:210:09:25

We're here at the control room of Glenelg police station.

0:09:250:09:28

It's one of our smaller stations in a very nice, touristy area.

0:09:280:09:31

As you've probably guessed, we're both from the UK.

0:09:310:09:34

There are a number of differences that we've got over here, to what we had in the UK.

0:09:340:09:38

One being that we carry a firearm and ammunition.

0:09:380:09:41

Jetty Road in Glenelg has lots of bars, pubs and restaurants.

0:09:410:09:45

Most of the offences that we'd have to deal here would be

0:09:450:09:48

public order offences and offences relating to alcohol.

0:09:480:09:52

So, if you want to achieve more, come and work at Glenelg with South Australia Police.

0:09:520:09:57

In all three options, Paul would be working for the South Australia Police

0:09:590:10:03

and therefore his starting wage would be the same.

0:10:030:10:06

The country option offers a healthier lifestyle where the property's slightly cheaper.

0:10:060:10:11

City living comes at a price with homes more expensive,

0:10:110:10:14

but it's the only option with a helicopter division.

0:10:140:10:18

The coastal option is expensive property-wise,

0:10:180:10:20

but this is offset by a more laid-back lifestyle.

0:10:200:10:23

Three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:10:250:10:29

So, which one suited them best?

0:10:290:10:31

MUSIC: "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals

0:10:310:10:33

We thought the city option where the work involves helicopters

0:10:380:10:42

best fitted the Williams criteria for their week in Adelaide.

0:10:420:10:45

And, after touching down on Aussie soil, the family are all too aware of just how far they've travelled.

0:10:450:10:52

That's a long way. That is...that's a long way.

0:10:520:10:57

It seems like two weeks ago we parked the car at Heathrow and came over here.

0:10:570:11:01

It's just been... quite an experience.

0:11:010:11:04

After the first part, we'd been flying for 13 hours

0:11:040:11:06

and we still had another seven, eight hours to go.

0:11:060:11:09

Watched a lot of films.

0:11:090:11:11

Their week ahead promises to be busy, but Jo's thoughts are already on more immediate plans.

0:11:110:11:16

-Shower.

-Shower, yeah! Smelly!

-Clean teeth.

0:11:160:11:20

Too much fur on teeth!

0:11:200:11:22

So, it's into the hire car and straight to their rental property.

0:11:240:11:28

Their base for the week is a house right in the city.

0:11:280:11:31

The Williams are staying in a two-storey Adelaide house that gives them everything they need.

0:11:400:11:45

Watch this door.

0:11:480:11:50

-Look at this.

-Ooh!

0:11:500:11:53

-Nice.

-Nice ain't it?

0:11:530:11:54

It comes with three bedrooms...

0:11:540:11:56

-Nice, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-This is my room.

0:11:560:12:00

Oh, look at this. Very nice!

0:12:000:12:03

Have a look at the other room. Let's go and see.

0:12:030:12:05

-Lovely, ain't it?

-Yeah, very nice.

0:12:050:12:07

..it's got nice, big wardrobes...

0:12:070:12:09

You've got one hanger.

0:12:090:12:11

Oh, yes!

0:12:130:12:14

Oh, wow!

0:12:140:12:16

Lovely, ain't it?

0:12:160:12:18

..and, most importantly...

0:12:180:12:20

We've got wine glasses, so that's good. That's all I need.

0:12:200:12:23

But, we've saved the best bit till last. A hot tub in the garden.

0:12:230:12:28

HE LAUGHS GHOULISHLY

0:12:280:12:31

The problem with that, girls, is children aren't allowed in it.

0:12:310:12:34

-Yeah. They can just watch on the steps.

-No, they can't!

0:12:340:12:37

They can. It's the Australian law.

0:12:370:12:39

Hoh-hoh, hoh!

0:12:400:12:43

-Oh, feel that!

-Oh, wow! Wow!

-That's lovely.

0:12:430:12:48

Oh, sorry about that!

0:12:480:12:51

THEY LAUGH

0:12:510:12:52

It may be July, but that's the middle of winter in Adelaide.

0:12:540:12:58

The sun's out, which is a good start.

0:12:580:13:00

Very cold.

0:13:000:13:01

I don't think we really prepared as well as we could have done.

0:13:010:13:05

Bit of a baptism of fire.

0:13:050:13:07

-But it's dry at the moment.

-We're used to a lot colder, anyway,

0:13:070:13:10

-Well, you are.

-Yeah.

0:13:100:13:11

I've got a manly t-shirt, look.

0:13:110:13:13

HE SHIVERS

0:13:130:13:15

-I'm sure we'll cope with that.

-Yeah.

0:13:150:13:17

The long flight's given them time to reflect on saying goodbye to Paul's elder daughter, Alice.

0:13:170:13:23

To leave her was horrific.

0:13:230:13:25

She was waiting for me when I came in, looking out the window, waved

0:13:250:13:28

and as soon as I walked in the door, she just sobbed her eyes out.

0:13:280:13:32

-Went straight up to you.

-Hmm.

-You're starting now.

0:13:320:13:34

Went straight up to you, gave you a hug, didn't leave her alone.

0:13:340:13:37

She was just crying and crying and crying and how ever light-hearted

0:13:370:13:41

I tried to make the conversation, she just sobbed.

0:13:410:13:43

Then that made us think, "Oh, flipping heck, what we doing?"

0:13:430:13:46

It just made me think, she's so upset now, after...

0:13:480:13:51

you know, two weeks, however long it is

0:13:510:13:53

and if we did make the decision to make it permanent, you know...

0:13:530:13:58

it'd be awful for her, wouldn't it?

0:13:580:14:00

-Oh! It would be awful for us.

-Hmm.

0:14:000:14:02

If this were the day we were moving and we weren't gonna come back...

0:14:020:14:06

you know, you were crying with all your mates and the way Alice was and everything as well,

0:14:060:14:10

-I mean, if that was the day...

-Hmm.

-Oh, crikey!

0:14:100:14:15

But, hey. Let's see, eh?

0:14:160:14:18

The Williams are anxious to see what Adelaide has in store, but with thoughts of missing Alice

0:14:180:14:23

already on their minds, the whole trip could be in jeopardy before the week has even begun.

0:14:230:14:29

In the UK, the Williams live in a three-bedroomed, semi-detached house

0:14:340:14:38

on the outskirts of Leicester, worth about £180,000.

0:14:380:14:43

If they move to Australia, they would be looking to spend £200,000,

0:14:460:14:50

that's around 410,000 Australian dollars,

0:14:500:14:53

and would include a mortgage.

0:14:530:14:55

But house prices in Adelaide aren't as cheap as they used to be,

0:14:550:14:59

so, they may struggle to find a house within their budget.

0:14:590:15:02

The first of the three properties we're showing the Williams

0:15:030:15:06

is in the suburb of Prospect, a stone's throw from the city centre.

0:15:060:15:10

It's a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property

0:15:100:15:14

and at 430,000 Australian dollars, or £210,000,

0:15:140:15:19

it's slightly over their budget.

0:15:190:15:21

-Oh, lovely!

-Look at this!

0:15:210:15:24

-Ooh, this is nice...

-Ooh, it is.

-..isn't it?

0:15:240:15:28

-Nice.

-Lovely.

0:15:280:15:30

And straight away, they seem impressed.

0:15:320:15:34

Look at the wardrobe. Look at this!

0:15:340:15:36

-This is your room!

-Oh, I see, my room!

0:15:360:15:39

-Is this a dining room?

-No.

0:15:390:15:42

Reception room.

0:15:420:15:43

-Nice and bright, everywhere.

-It is.

0:15:430:15:45

-My dad would like this.

-Oh, fantastic!

0:15:450:15:49

Look at this!

0:15:490:15:51

I would have it set up exactly the same as this.

0:15:510:15:53

Oh, ain't it lovely?

0:15:530:15:55

Jo's spotted something she likes.

0:15:550:15:57

-Now, that's what I call a wine rack.

-Absolutely.

0:15:570:16:00

It's really nice, yeah.

0:16:010:16:03

-This is a real...

-sort of family...

-..yeah, party room.

0:16:030:16:07

Absolutely gorgeous.

0:16:070:16:08

-Do you wanna have a look? This is lovely, ain't it?

-Yeah, it is.

0:16:100:16:13

-Quite nice and warm.

-It is, yeah.

0:16:130:16:15

GIRLS LAUGH

0:16:160:16:18

-Oh, yeah!

-Oh, my goodness.

0:16:180:16:21

To stand here...cooking...

0:16:210:16:23

wine in there, all opened up, all friends gushing through.

0:16:230:16:28

-Friends?

-Well...people we borrowed.

0:16:280:16:32

Very nice!

0:16:330:16:34

This is a party house, isn't it?

0:16:340:16:37

It's nice.

0:16:370:16:38

So we've established it's a party house,

0:16:380:16:41

but has it fulfilled the rest of their needs?

0:16:410:16:43

The only thing that puts me off is the bedrooms being on the front.

0:16:430:16:47

Although they're gorgeous, I would prefer them upstairs.

0:16:470:16:52

-Could you see us living here?

-Yeah, definitely, yeah.

0:16:520:16:55

It's just the bedroom situation, I would prefer...

0:16:550:16:57

So, this house would be ideal for them if only it had an upstairs.

0:16:570:17:01

So, perhaps property two will fare better.

0:17:020:17:05

Being further out of town means they could get more for their money.

0:17:050:17:09

Set amongst the Adelaide Hills, this house is again a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property.

0:17:090:17:16

But this time, there's that all important second storey.

0:17:160:17:20

-What do you think to this, then?

-Gorgeous.

-Fantastic.

0:17:200:17:23

Nice and high.

0:17:230:17:25

-Completely different, ain't it?

-Talk about quiet. Listen to this.

0:17:250:17:28

It's a bespoke cabin.

0:17:280:17:31

The Williams would have to shell out 420,000

0:17:310:17:35

or around £205,000 to make this their home.

0:17:350:17:40

The sound of all the birds. You really are in the...

0:17:400:17:42

-Yes.

-A parrot just flew by there.

0:17:420:17:45

It's lovely. Just very, very peaceful.

0:17:450:17:48

Very quiet, very tranquil.

0:17:480:17:50

The birds singing. This is, on first impressions, very nice.

0:17:500:17:54

Judging by their reactions to the exterior,

0:17:540:17:56

this could be their perfect house,

0:17:560:17:58

but it's what's on the inside that really counts.

0:17:580:18:03

-Oh, it's gorgeous!

-Look at this!

0:18:030:18:05

Oh, wow! This is lovely.

0:18:050:18:08

Just the whole thing, it's just so...open.

0:18:080:18:11

-Talk about open-plan.

-The openness is lovely.

0:18:110:18:13

Oh, it's an old stove-type thing, look.

0:18:130:18:16

Do you know how many rooms it's got up here?

0:18:180:18:21

-Oh, look at that!

-It's a nice room, isn't it?

0:18:210:18:23

So far, so good, but Jo's spotted a problem...

0:18:230:18:27

-They're quite small though. The rooms are quite small.

-Yeah.

0:18:270:18:31

..or two...

0:18:310:18:32

There's not a lot of storage space.

0:18:320:18:34

..or three.

0:18:340:18:36

It's a shower room, ain't it? There's no bath there.

0:18:360:18:38

Oh, there's no bath, yeah.

0:18:380:18:40

Thank goodness Ellie's found something to like.

0:18:400:18:43

It's just nice and pink.

0:18:430:18:45

I know. I thought you were gonna say because it's pink.

0:18:450:18:47

For you two, you'd have to share a room.

0:18:470:18:50

Cos this is it, really. That one and this room.

0:18:500:18:52

Hang on, this property has three bedrooms, so where is the third?

0:18:520:18:56

Oh, it's another bedroom.

0:18:560:18:58

It's got pink bits on, Abs.

0:19:000:19:02

Oh, look. It's for, like, guests, I suppose.

0:19:020:19:05

I suppose it would be, yeah.

0:19:050:19:07

-Would you put the kids down here?

-No. No way. No, definitely not.

0:19:070:19:11

-Why not?

-No. I'd prefer them upstairs with me.

0:19:110:19:14

-Where you can see them?

-Yes.

0:19:140:19:16

So, what's the verdict?

0:19:160:19:18

It's a lovely home and they've made it really nice, haven't they? But it's not really for us.

0:19:180:19:23

First impressions are great. You walk in and wow!

0:19:230:19:25

-It's the real wow factor.

-Absolutely.

0:19:250:19:27

It's the practicalities of it all afterwards that throw it.

0:19:270:19:30

It's a weekend break house, I think.

0:19:300:19:32

Plus, as well, I think I'd feel a bit isolated

0:19:320:19:35

if I was to be here on my own with the kids if Paul's working.

0:19:350:19:39

I think I'd feel a bit scared on my own at night-time,

0:19:390:19:43

cos it's quite a creaky house. With us going around you can hear it creaking.

0:19:430:19:47

At night-time I don't think I'd sleep.

0:19:470:19:48

Do you like snakes and spiders, Jo?

0:19:480:19:50

I really do not like snakes and spiders.

0:19:500:19:53

Snakes'd be fine. That's OK, yeah.

0:19:530:19:56

But spiders, anything that flies, apart from birds, I absolutely hate.

0:19:560:20:01

-Hate.

-So, countryside's quite good for you, then?

-No.

0:20:010:20:05

If I had lots of money, yes, you could get this as well

0:20:050:20:08

and have it as a weekend retreat

0:20:080:20:10

and have the one in the city as well, to stay there.

0:20:100:20:13

But practical, money-wise, in the city, yes.

0:20:130:20:16

Here, hmm, not really.

0:20:160:20:18

So, they've found themselves a country getaway,

0:20:180:20:21

but to live in, it gets the thumbs down.

0:20:210:20:24

Let's hope property three is more to their liking.

0:20:240:20:26

It's a four-bedroom house, so bigger than the last

0:20:280:20:31

and at 470,000, or £230,000,

0:20:310:20:36

it's the most expensive of the three properties.

0:20:360:20:39

And, with stunning views over the ocean, it's off to a great start.

0:20:410:20:47

What can you see over there?

0:20:470:20:49

-Look at that view! That is beautiful, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is.

0:20:490:20:53

Look at all that out there as well, look.

0:20:530:20:55

-Shall we have a look inside?

-Yeah.

0:20:550:20:57

Oh, this is lovely.

0:20:570:20:59

-Oh, wow!

-This is nice and comfy.

0:20:590:21:02

Yeah, really nice.

0:21:020:21:04

It's huge.

0:21:050:21:06

This is a big room as well, ain't it?

0:21:070:21:09

-There you go, look, Jo. Your stash.

-Yeah.

0:21:090:21:12

With a lock on it, padlocked.

0:21:120:21:15

Yeah, that's to keep you out.

0:21:150:21:16

This is gorgeous.

0:21:160:21:18

Oh, look at this, girls!

0:21:210:21:22

-Fantastic.

-It's really nice.

0:21:220:21:24

Oh, wow! Look at that.

0:21:240:21:28

Absolutely stunning.

0:21:280:21:30

Imagine, you're sitting here, it's either sunset or sunrise...

0:21:300:21:33

With a glass of wine.

0:21:330:21:35

-From the storage.

-From next door.

0:21:350:21:37

Oh, that sounds nice.

0:21:370:21:39

And it's a sign they can really see themselves living here.

0:21:390:21:42

Oh, this is a nice room.

0:21:420:21:44

-Oh, yes.

-Isn't that nice?

0:21:440:21:46

-This is lovely.

-It is, isn't it?

0:21:460:21:48

The other good thing about this would be the view again out there.

0:21:480:21:51

Yeah, it's gorgeous.

0:21:510:21:53

-This is nice, as well.

-Oh, yeah.

0:21:530:21:55

I'm confused now, which room would be ours.

0:21:550:21:58

With a choice of not one, but three reception rooms,

0:21:580:22:00

a large open-plan kitchen and vistas from every window,

0:22:000:22:04

this is ticking all the right boxes

0:22:040:22:07

and they haven't seen the outside yet.

0:22:070:22:09

Wow, look at this! It's nice to see lawn, actually.

0:22:110:22:14

Yeah, it is, ain't it? Yeah.

0:22:140:22:16

Look at that view.

0:22:160:22:18

There's a bit down there with a fence, look.

0:22:180:22:20

-That's beautiful, ain't it?

-It is.

0:22:200:22:22

-Absolutely gorgeous.

-You could wave to the neighbours.

0:22:220:22:26

-Paul, don't do that!

-There's a bloke over there, I was waving at him.

0:22:260:22:29

He'll think you're strange. You just... Stop it!

0:22:290:22:32

What? It's what you do when you're neighbourly.

0:22:320:22:34

I don't want to go now.

0:22:340:22:36

There's even space for a pool if they wanted.

0:22:390:22:42

So, do we have a winner?

0:22:420:22:44

This one in particular is fantastic.

0:22:440:22:47

It's by far the best one. It's what I had in my mind prior to coming out

0:22:470:22:51

and having had a look around it now, it's just confirmed

0:22:510:22:55

that you can get some good quality properties for decent prices.

0:22:550:23:01

It would be a stretch, money-wise, but we could afford this.

0:23:010:23:05

-It's affordable, isn't it?

-To think we could live

0:23:050:23:07

in somewhere like this, you'd never believe it normally.

0:23:070:23:10

Obviously, there'd be certain things that we'd change, but you do that as you go along.

0:23:100:23:15

Having looked around, it's minimal changes.

0:23:150:23:17

No, it's definitely a dream house for us.

0:23:170:23:19

Wow! That's a result.

0:23:190:23:22

And, being close to the beach, it could also provide them

0:23:220:23:24

with that ultimate Aussie lifestyle they're after.

0:23:240:23:27

The Williams have seen a real variety of properties.

0:23:270:23:30

The first, on the market for £210,000, was modern and open-plan,

0:23:300:23:36

but lacked an upstairs.

0:23:360:23:37

House number two had character and was cheaper at £205,000,

0:23:370:23:42

but was impractical and too small.

0:23:420:23:45

It was the final property that really hit the mark,

0:23:450:23:48

providing everything the Williams wanted,

0:23:480:23:51

although the £230,000 price tag means they'd have to stretch themselves.

0:23:510:23:55

So, do they prefer properties in the UK or what they've seen in Australia?

0:23:550:24:00

It's time to vote.

0:24:000:24:02

We've made our minds up with regards to what we want to do

0:24:020:24:05

and we're going to vote for...

0:24:050:24:07

..Australia!

0:24:090:24:11

The Williams family felt they could find a suitable property

0:24:140:24:18

in Australia, but it all depends on Paul finding the right job

0:24:180:24:22

to pay for the new lifestyle.

0:24:220:24:24

He loves his work in the UK, but will he be so keen

0:24:240:24:27

on what the South Australian Police have to offer?

0:24:270:24:30

Back home, Paul is a police air observer,

0:24:320:24:35

but a move to Australia could mean a massive sacrifice for him.

0:24:350:24:38

It's a hard decision to make because I will be taking a step backwards.

0:24:380:24:43

With the length of service I've got,

0:24:430:24:45

I'm being paid as a senior police officer, Police Constable,

0:24:450:24:48

to transfer out to the South Australia Police,

0:24:480:24:52

you then start on a cadet's wage again, which is a huge drop.

0:24:520:24:55

I would be back out on the beat,

0:24:550:24:58

in the beat cars, walking around the beat,

0:24:580:25:00

after 18 months and you're out of your probationary period,

0:25:000:25:02

your money is then raised somewhat to encompass the service that you've got back in this country,

0:25:020:25:08

but initially it would be a huge financial burden.

0:25:080:25:11

Today, he's off to see the Special Tasks And Rescue Force

0:25:110:25:15

to find out about his future job prospects in the South Australia Police.

0:25:150:25:21

On the back of what's happening today,

0:25:210:25:23

there is going to be some big decisions made that could alter

0:25:230:25:26

my career path as well as my family's life.

0:25:260:25:29

So, it's a huge decision I'll be ultimately making,

0:25:290:25:32

with regards to what me and the family are gonna be doing.

0:25:320:25:35

Meanwhile, Jo's taken Ellie and Abby to check out

0:25:350:25:39

Adelaide Aquatic Centre as she comes to terms with the reality

0:25:390:25:42

of being in Australia.

0:25:420:25:44

Prior to coming out to Adelaide,

0:25:440:25:46

all of us really, had got complete mixed feelings.

0:25:460:25:50

And the Friday before I actually finished work,

0:25:500:25:52

people were coming down from the offices upstairs

0:25:520:25:55

and giving me a hug and saying, "Have a lovely time."

0:25:550:25:57

As if I was going forever and... at that split-second I thought,

0:25:570:26:01

"Crikey, this is how it's gonna be if we did decide to go."

0:26:010:26:05

And the absence of her stepdaughter, Alice,

0:26:050:26:07

is continually playing on her mind.

0:26:070:26:10

I've got my two, but it always seems that a piece of us is missing and that's really, really difficult.

0:26:100:26:16

But is Paul coping any better?

0:26:160:26:19

You can tell it's on his mind. As it is all of us.

0:26:190:26:21

But the girls have brought pictures of her and they're in their rooms

0:26:210:26:24

and we've got a picture of her as well and it's just really strange

0:26:240:26:28

with her not being here as well. This will be a tester for him, I think.

0:26:280:26:32

Paul's meeting acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy,

0:26:330:26:36

who gives him a tour around the hangar.

0:26:360:26:38

-Hi, Brett. How you doing? I'm Paul.

-Come in. I'll show you around.

0:26:380:26:41

Lovely, thanks very much.

0:26:410:26:43

This is the EC130, Paul. This is our primary police helicopter at STAR group.

0:26:430:26:47

It's used mainly for high-speed pursuits

0:26:470:26:49

and surveillance and looking for missing people.

0:26:490:26:52

So, as you can see, the FLIR operator will sit on the right-hand side here.

0:26:520:26:56

FLIR being Forward Looking Infra-Red, which you know all about.

0:26:560:27:00

Yeah, we've got the same one.

0:27:000:27:01

Do you have the live feedback to a communication base?

0:27:010:27:04

We have a microwave downlink.

0:27:040:27:06

A lot of our firearms teams, like your STAR team, would have portable, hand-held receivers as well.

0:27:060:27:12

If we were at a firearms job, for example, they have the hand-held terminal there,

0:27:120:27:16

we'll be giving them pictures and they can see what's around the scene,

0:27:160:27:20

360 degrees around there as well.

0:27:200:27:22

-How about we go for a fly?

-Fantastic. If that's all right?

0:27:220:27:25

On a training mission for the crew,

0:27:260:27:28

Brett gives Paul the opportunity to see first-hand

0:27:280:27:31

the job he could be doing.

0:27:310:27:33

As Paul get a bird's-eye view of the city,

0:27:350:27:37

Jo's thinking about the effect a move away from friends and family

0:27:370:27:41

would have on her and the girls.

0:27:410:27:43

Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it,

0:27:430:27:48

I'd absolutely hate it.

0:27:480:27:49

I wouldn't like to be at home while the kids were at school.

0:27:490:27:52

I think I would get extremely homesick

0:27:520:27:55

and it wouldn't be beneficial to me at all. I'd need to be with people

0:27:550:27:58

and try to establish some sort of network of friends, again.

0:27:580:28:02

I still don't know whether I could just up sticks

0:28:020:28:04

and leave everybody behind.

0:28:040:28:06

But, I've come here with an open mind.

0:28:060:28:09

We'll see how we go.

0:28:090:28:11

Did you enjoy that?

0:28:110:28:12

As he comes back down to earth, the family's whole future

0:28:130:28:17

in Australia hinges on Paul asking some vital questions.

0:28:170:28:21

It's a huge risk to give up the position and salary

0:28:210:28:24

he has in the UK and go back to being a cadet.

0:28:240:28:27

But how long would he have to wait before he could get the job he really wants?

0:28:270:28:31

I've got nearly 15 years' experience as a bobby in England,

0:28:310:28:35

would I be able to join and then come straight on to

0:28:350:28:38

this helicopter unit here?

0:28:380:28:40

No, you couldn't. What you'd need to do is go through the academy

0:28:400:28:43

and after the nine-month period,

0:28:430:28:45

you'd go out on the road for 15 months as a general duties police officer.

0:28:450:28:48

After that you'd have a couple of years on the road

0:28:480:28:51

and then you'd be able to apply to come down to STAR group.

0:28:510:28:54

Once at STAR Group, there's another probationary period of 12 months.

0:28:540:28:58

After that period you'd be able to apply to come to the helicopters.

0:28:580:29:01

That's not what he wanted to hear.

0:29:010:29:03

With the knowledge that it could take longer than he thought to reach his goal,

0:29:030:29:07

Paul's left wondering if this could all be worth it.

0:29:070:29:10

They're a great bunch of people and if I worked here, I'm sure I'd be very, very happy.

0:29:100:29:15

But, there's lots of hoops and lots of steps to go through prior to getting to this particular point.

0:29:150:29:20

No doubt it's going to be extremely difficult for Paul

0:29:200:29:23

to make the transition from the UK

0:29:230:29:25

and he's an experienced police officer.

0:29:250:29:27

Having said that, it's going to be a three to four year period

0:29:270:29:30

before Paul even looks at a helicopter.

0:29:300:29:32

It's just how much he wants to be here

0:29:320:29:34

and his determination and motivation to do it.

0:29:340:29:38

It's like taking ten huge steps backwards,

0:29:380:29:42

but that has got to be balanced up against the lifestyle that you'd be leading out here anyway.

0:29:420:29:46

So, big decisions to make. It's a long time to wait

0:29:460:29:51

and ultimately, that's not guaranteed a job, either.

0:29:510:29:54

It's a job I'd have to go for and get through the selection process.

0:29:540:29:58

There's a lot to think about.

0:29:580:30:00

If he decides he can't wait, Paul's Australian dream could be over.

0:30:000:30:04

So, how will he vote on work?

0:30:040:30:06

OK, I've been out on the STAR Team today, I've seen how they work,

0:30:060:30:10

I've met the blokes, I've had a fly in the helicopter.

0:30:100:30:13

I've got to weigh up whether this is a place for me to work

0:30:130:30:17

or whether I stay within the UK.

0:30:170:30:19

So, after all this, I'd have to say I've got to vote for...

0:30:190:30:22

..UK!

0:30:240:30:26

Go to any UK supermarket and you're faced with a huge array of wine from Down Under.

0:30:290:30:35

Australia is the world's third largest exporter of wine, selling more to us Brits than the French.

0:30:350:30:41

So, what's the reason behind its success?

0:30:410:30:43

The thing about Australian wine is it delivers on all levels.

0:30:450:30:49

So, you've got relatively inexpensive, good value,

0:30:490:30:52

well-made wines, which have really kind of made the market in the UK.

0:30:520:30:56

But equally so, you've got lots of small producers

0:30:560:30:59

making wonderful regional wines, right up the food chain.

0:30:590:31:03

There are over 60 wine-growing regions in the country

0:31:030:31:07

and over 2,000 wine producers,

0:31:070:31:09

meaning a huge variety of bottles to choose from.

0:31:090:31:13

I suppose the stereotype of Australian wine

0:31:130:31:15

is big, ripe, powerful Shiraz and big, ripe, golden Chardonnay.

0:31:150:31:20

But we have areas, I mean, an area like this, the Adelaide Hills,

0:31:200:31:23

is similar in temperature to Burgundy.

0:31:230:31:26

It really is quite cold.

0:31:260:31:28

So, the wines we produce are more elegant,

0:31:280:31:30

more delicate, slightly higher acid.

0:31:300:31:33

They're not these robust, heroic Shirazes, perhaps,

0:31:330:31:36

that our reputation was built on.

0:31:360:31:38

So, things are looking Rose for Australian wine producers.

0:31:390:31:43

People who, initially, were just happy drinking an inexpensive,

0:31:430:31:48

unpretentious glass of Shiraz

0:31:480:31:49

are now going, "Oh, that's pretty good, I wonder what else they do?"

0:31:490:31:53

So, what we're finding is that people who initially started on some of the bigger brands,

0:31:530:31:58

are now increasingly interested in the smaller producers and they're looking for the diversity.

0:31:580:32:04

And advice to the British wine drinker?

0:32:040:32:07

It just requires people to be a bit experimental and try some things that they haven't before,

0:32:070:32:12

because you might discover something that's just fabulous.

0:32:120:32:16

Paul Williams has fond memories of the time he spent in Australia

0:32:200:32:24

a few years ago and firmly believes that, as a family, they could have a better quality of life Down Under.

0:32:240:32:30

I spent 10 days out there and I fell in love with the country.

0:32:300:32:33

Wife Jo is happy with her life in the UK

0:32:330:32:36

and has mixed feelings about moving.

0:32:360:32:38

Half of me is really excited to go

0:32:380:32:40

and the other half of me, I have to think twice about it.

0:32:400:32:43

I think it's cos I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions.

0:32:430:32:47

It's going to be really hard.

0:32:470:32:48

But she did fall in love with a house in Adelaide.

0:32:480:32:51

We could never be able to afford this in England.

0:32:510:32:54

It's definitely a dream house for us.

0:32:540:32:56

Hanging over everything, though, is the prospect they'd be leaving

0:32:560:32:59

Paul's elder daughter, Alice, behind if they did decide to move.

0:32:590:33:03

It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?"

0:33:030:33:07

It's something I'm gonna have to think long and hard about.

0:33:070:33:11

Will hearing messages from friends and family back home make the decision even harder?

0:33:110:33:17

-Oh, dear me!

-Right, book the taxi.

0:33:170:33:20

The news from the police was a blow to Paul's hopes of moving,

0:33:240:33:29

so they're taking the kids to Adelaide Zoo

0:33:290:33:31

to see if a taste of the Aussie lifestyle

0:33:310:33:33

will give them some encouragement.

0:33:330:33:36

Hello. Oh, look!

0:33:390:33:41

Ah!

0:33:450:33:46

Oh, yeah. It's lovely.

0:33:460:33:48

-So, Jo, would you swap the kids for a koala?

-No.

0:33:490:33:51

Husband, probably!

0:33:510:33:53

-Very clever!

-I'll go with you, Dad.

-Thanks, babes.

0:33:550:33:58

-I get so much abuse from you, it's unbelievable.

-You love it, you know you do.

0:33:580:34:02

Today sums it up for us, really.

0:34:020:34:03

As a family, we've come out, we've experienced things we've never experienced before.

0:34:030:34:08

I've held a koala, I've fed and stroked kangaroos. It's been great.

0:34:080:34:11

And for the girls, as well, it's a real experience for them, as well.

0:34:110:34:15

That's the positive thing about being kids,

0:34:150:34:18

they adapt to every situation you put them in.

0:34:180:34:20

-How you doin'?

-I'm all right thanks, how are you?

0:34:200:34:23

THEY LAUGH

0:34:230:34:24

-Hello.

-You'll be all right.

0:34:290:34:31

MUSIC: "Love At First Sight" by Kylie Minogue

0:34:310:34:34

So, the girls are fitting into the Aussie way of life, but what about Jo?

0:34:470:34:53

I've noticed, in the last couple of days, she's been a lot quieter

0:34:530:34:57

than she perhaps normally would be

0:34:570:34:59

and I think she's missing friends and family and people around her.

0:34:590:35:03

There's not been the contact that she thought there would have been,

0:35:030:35:06

mainly for the time difference and it's only really feasible to ring

0:35:060:35:09

either early in the morning or later in the evening

0:35:090:35:12

and the messages she's had, are starting to get to her, I think.

0:35:120:35:16

Since he's pointed that out I feel, "Yeah, you're probably right."

0:35:160:35:19

I probably am missing everybody and I'm sort of...

0:35:190:35:21

that's probably my way of coping, again, but...

0:35:210:35:24

I'm going to ring everybody tonight, because that's what the matter is.

0:35:240:35:28

The impact a move to Australia would have on Paul's daughter, Alice,

0:35:280:35:32

is never far from their thoughts.

0:35:320:35:33

Alice, bless her, she'd have loved this, she really would have. It would've been great.

0:35:330:35:38

Living away from Alice, it's become a lot more real.

0:35:380:35:40

If we were to move, I know I, personally, wouldn't be able to cope

0:35:400:35:43

with leaving her behind and only her coming on holidays.

0:35:430:35:47

The biggest deciding factor will be, what will happen with Alice,

0:35:470:35:51

how she'll feel, what we can agree amongst ourselves as a family,

0:35:510:35:54

including Alice and also Alice's mum, as well.

0:35:540:35:57

It would be a huge, huge decision if it were a permanent move

0:35:570:36:01

and that's perhaps a good reality check.

0:36:010:36:02

That I had these rose-tinted glasses of how small the world is,

0:36:020:36:06

it's only a day's flight, what with the internet, web cams.

0:36:060:36:12

I was very flippant with them sorts of comments.

0:36:120:36:15

It is a long, long way.

0:36:150:36:16

If we did come out here, if it was the right thing to do,

0:36:160:36:19

we'd have to wait and bring her with us.

0:36:190:36:21

It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?"

0:36:210:36:24

The Williams have spent a day of quality time together,

0:36:240:36:28

something they say they want more of.

0:36:280:36:30

But it's also reminded them that moving here would come with one enormous price to pay.

0:36:300:36:35

With so much to consider, how will they vote on lifestyle?

0:36:360:36:40

-Had a good day?

-Yep.

0:36:400:36:42

And we like the way that how friendly people are,

0:36:420:36:45

how well looked after the animals are,

0:36:450:36:47

and it was just well laid out.

0:36:470:36:49

So, as a family, we're going to vote for...

0:36:490:36:51

..Australia!

0:36:530:36:55

It's been a week of tough decisions and it's about to get tougher still.

0:36:580:37:03

How will the Williamses feel when confronted with the thoughts

0:37:030:37:06

of their friends and family back home?

0:37:060:37:08

We put together some messages to remind them of the people they'd be leaving behind.

0:37:100:37:16

BOTH: Hello, Jo, Paul, Ellie and Abbey.

0:37:160:37:18

Mum and Dad loves you lots.

0:37:180:37:21

He's a big clown, but we love him.

0:37:210:37:23

He's the life and soul of the duty sometimes

0:37:240:37:26

when it's dead at 2am, so, yeah, we'll miss him.

0:37:260:37:30

He's a nice guy, a good guy, and we'll miss his family, as well.

0:37:310:37:34

We are close, yeah, we are close

0:37:340:37:37

and we love to be together, we can make each other laugh so much.

0:37:370:37:42

It's become more, sort of, an extended family

0:37:420:37:45

rather than just neighbours.

0:37:450:37:48

She classes us as sisters, not friends.

0:37:480:37:53

Which I feel very privileged about.

0:37:530:37:55

Erm, she's very sensitive, very kind,

0:37:550:37:58

which is where the missing of family bit will come in...for Jo.

0:37:580:38:03

The emotional tie, yeah, yeah.

0:38:030:38:06

But I don't think that's insurmountable.

0:38:060:38:08

I think it's something they're going to be able to try and take on board

0:38:080:38:12

as a foursome.

0:38:120:38:14

I think Jo would probably struggle...for a bit.

0:38:140:38:17

That would be her main...

0:38:170:38:20

you know, she'd miss everybody.

0:38:200:38:22

We've known each other a long time

0:38:220:38:23

and the only downfall is, when you move somewhere,

0:38:230:38:26

you can't just meet people and have the same relationship overnight.

0:38:260:38:30

I can't imagine being without her. I can't imagine life without her.

0:38:300:38:35

I can't imagine not being able to pick up the phone and say,

0:38:350:38:39

"I'll be round in ten minutes for a coffee".

0:38:390:38:41

It's a fact that Alice couldn't go with them

0:38:410:38:44

because her mum wouldn't contemplate it for a second.

0:38:440:38:47

So, it's a fact and I think Paul would live with that fact

0:38:470:38:50

until such time as it could be changed by Alice moving to them.

0:38:500:38:54

Paul will find it difficult.

0:38:540:38:56

I think his relationship with Alice is wonderful

0:38:560:39:01

and the times he has with her when she comes here at weekends are fun.

0:39:010:39:05

For the girls, Abbey and Ellie, to leave their half-sister Alice

0:39:050:39:09

it will really...

0:39:090:39:11

it would be a bit of a wrench for them.

0:39:110:39:14

I think that Alice is going to find it difficult.

0:39:140:39:17

But Alice is a very understanding girl and I think,

0:39:170:39:22

in time, will appreciate the reasons behind them going,

0:39:220:39:27

should they decide to go permanently.

0:39:270:39:29

Jo, I hope it's everything Paul said it was

0:39:290:39:33

and that you're enjoying it, too.

0:39:330:39:34

-Oh, dear me.

-Right, book the taxi.

0:39:410:39:45

All right, babes?

0:39:450:39:46

Thanks, darling.

0:39:480:39:50

That was lovely, seeing everyone, weren't it?

0:39:500:39:53

-Quite strange seeing them all here, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:39:530:39:55

Makes it all real.

0:39:550:39:58

Oh, dear.

0:39:580:40:00

Is it seeing everybody again?

0:40:050:40:07

The Williams family from Leicestershire came to Adelaide,

0:40:140:40:18

hoping to find a change of pace and a better standard of living.

0:40:180:40:22

This is gorgeous.

0:40:220:40:25

-Oh my goodness, it's lovely.

-Fantastic.

-It's really, really nice.

0:40:250:40:29

But Paul discovered there would be a long wait

0:40:290:40:32

before he got to use his skills as a police air observer.

0:40:320:40:35

It's going to be a three to four year period

0:40:350:40:37

before Paul even looks at a helicopter.

0:40:370:40:40

It's a long time to wait.

0:40:400:40:41

Watching messages from loved ones back in the UK

0:40:410:40:44

has really hit home what a move to Oz would entail.

0:40:440:40:48

Oh, dear me.

0:40:490:40:50

As their week in Adelaide draws to a close,

0:40:540:40:57

Paul and Jo have been wrestling with a heart-wrenching decision.

0:40:570:41:01

What Australia has to offer is quite positive,

0:41:010:41:03

but it's just whether I can leave behind what we've got at the moment.

0:41:030:41:06

You make friends anywhere,

0:41:060:41:08

but you always keep your true friends, don't you?

0:41:080:41:11

It's the support network we've got there.

0:41:110:41:13

So, that would be really hard for me to let go.

0:41:130:41:16

And Paul is beginning to face the grim reality

0:41:160:41:19

of whether Alice really would choose to join them.

0:41:190:41:22

I think if we were to move out here and Alice decided not to come out here, I'd be gutted.

0:41:220:41:26

Ultimately, she's my daughter. I love her to bits.

0:41:260:41:29

She's a huge part of my life.

0:41:290:41:31

We're very, very close as a father and daughter

0:41:310:41:34

and I would always want it to be like that.

0:41:340:41:37

And for her to make the decision, if she were to make the decision,

0:41:370:41:41

in not coming out here, it'd be heart-wrenching.

0:41:410:41:43

The Williams are faced with a tough dilemma.

0:41:460:41:49

They've fallen in love with the homes and lifestyle,

0:41:490:41:52

but is that enough?

0:41:520:41:54

A vote to move would mean considerably less contact with Alice,

0:41:540:41:57

who might eventually choose to join them.

0:41:570:42:00

But, realistically, how long could they bear to be apart?

0:42:000:42:04

It's time to vote on their future.

0:42:040:42:06

We're at the end of our week in Adelaide and we've had a really good time.

0:42:060:42:10

But it's also made us realise what we've got at home

0:42:100:42:12

and how much things at home mean to us, whether it be relatives,

0:42:120:42:16

friends, work, family.

0:42:160:42:18

So, as a result of our trip, Ellie, what are we going to do?

0:42:180:42:21

We're going to vote for...

0:42:210:42:23

..UK!

0:42:250:42:27

Now I've had the opportunity to think about it

0:42:270:42:30

put things in order and make a decision in my mind, it's a relief.

0:42:300:42:34

This country, I'm sure, would offer a lovely life for us and the kids,

0:42:340:42:37

but without my family and friends and Alice, it's just not right.

0:42:370:42:43

You're gonna miss just so much of her life,

0:42:430:42:45

of her growing up, of her experiencing things with us.

0:42:450:42:50

It's something that has compounded how I feel.

0:42:500:42:53

The fact that you need to appreciate what you've got,

0:42:530:42:56

who you've got around you

0:42:560:42:58

and just enjoy everything that happens from the future onwards.

0:42:580:43:01
