If you had built a happy and successful life for your family,

0:00:020:00:05

would you be willing to set aside all your doubts

0:00:050:00:08

and start over on the other side of the world?

0:00:080:00:10

Claire Richards wants to follow her brother to New Zealand.

0:00:100:00:14

It's for me as well but it's for them, it's for their futures.

0:00:140:00:17

But her husband Paul has serious doubts.

0:00:170:00:20

If we were to come here we're giving up an awful lot.

0:00:200:00:23

And after a week of highs...

0:00:230:00:25

SHE GASPS Look!

0:00:250:00:26

Yeah, fair dos.

0:00:260:00:27

..and lows, they'll have to make a choice that could leave

0:00:270:00:31

someone broken-hearted.

0:00:310:00:32

If he turns round and says it's an absolute, definite no,

0:00:320:00:35

I think I'd be absolutely...

0:00:350:00:37

Well, I'd be gutted, I suppose.

0:00:370:00:39

I am honestly, honestly undecided on what to do at this moment in time.

0:00:390:00:43

I don't know how I'm going to make the decision.

0:00:430:00:46

For thousands of Brits every year, New Zealand offers the dream

0:01:080:01:12

of an ideal life set amongst epic surroundings.

0:01:120:01:16

However, that dream doesn't always work out

0:01:160:01:19

and for many new arrivals, their journey could end right back where it started.

0:01:190:01:24

Over the next few days,

0:01:250:01:26

the Richards family will get a taste of everyday life in New Zealand.

0:01:260:01:30

At the end of it,

0:01:300:01:31

they'll face one of the biggest decisions of their lives -

0:01:310:01:34

whether to stay in the UK or to make the move down under for good.

0:01:340:01:38

After crossing three continents, flying 11,000 miles

0:01:390:01:43

and facing 24 hours of in-flight movies,

0:01:430:01:46

the Richards arrive in Auckland.

0:01:460:01:48

On hand to meet them is a welcoming committee in the shape

0:01:510:01:54

of Claire's brother and his family, who moved out here nine years ago.

0:01:540:01:58

It's a reminder of what this move is all about.

0:02:010:02:04

It was lovely to see my brother, I haven't seen him for over a year

0:02:050:02:09

and I haven't seen my nieces in nearly two years,

0:02:090:02:11

so that's really lovely.

0:02:110:02:13

I'm going to embrace the situation

0:02:130:02:16

and take that opportunity to have a look at what working here

0:02:160:02:19

and living here has to offer for us and the family.

0:02:190:02:22

We'll wait for the light bulb moment with Paul

0:02:220:02:24

-when it all comes on and he thinks, "Yay!"

-We'll see.

0:02:240:02:27

I didn't like the aeroplane food.

0:02:270:02:30

I'm quite excited about the week.

0:02:300:02:32

Back in the UK,

0:02:370:02:38

the Richards live in the town of Penkridge in Staffordshire.

0:02:380:02:42

They are Paul, an IT project manager,

0:02:450:02:48

Claire, a part-time primary school teacher,

0:02:480:02:51

and their three daughters,

0:02:510:02:52

nine-year-old Elise,

0:02:520:02:54

seven-year-old Isabella,

0:02:540:02:56

and Francesca, who is five.

0:02:560:02:58

New Zealand has been on Claire's mind since 2003,

0:03:010:03:04

when her brother and his family first made the move.

0:03:040:03:08

After spending Christmas with them three years ago,

0:03:080:03:10

she began to wonder if emigrating could be a real possibility.

0:03:100:03:14

I've always wanted to go out there,

0:03:160:03:18

partly because of my brother being there.

0:03:180:03:20

And my mum and dad have been every year since he's been,

0:03:200:03:23

and that's all they talk about,

0:03:230:03:24

how fantastic it is, and for the children and the way of life.

0:03:240:03:28

And then when we went, we did see that side of it.

0:03:280:03:31

But all the time you are aware that you're on holiday

0:03:310:03:35

and therefore you see it through holiday glasses and you see it as...

0:03:350:03:39

Well, you're not in the practicalities of it all,

0:03:390:03:41

going to work and those sorts of things.

0:03:410:03:44

But from what I did see of it, it is a fantastic place.

0:03:440:03:49

That's my honest opinion on it.

0:03:490:03:52

Which may be different to yours, probably.

0:03:520:03:55

Moving down under may be Claire's dream,

0:03:550:03:57

but convincing Paul to share it is not easy matter.

0:03:570:04:00

In our relationship, I would say I'm the risk-adverse person

0:04:020:04:05

and I like to know what's around the corner.

0:04:050:04:08

I like to know what's going to happen

0:04:080:04:10

and moving to New Zealand, the reality is, for me,

0:04:100:04:13

it's a big change in the way that I conduct my life in terms of giving up everything

0:04:130:04:18

in that manner.

0:04:180:04:20

Paul's also the main bread winner, and New Zealand would mean

0:04:200:04:23

giving up a career he loves and the security it provides for his family.

0:04:230:04:28

One of the things, for me,

0:04:280:04:29

is I'll be giving up a good job to go and effectively start again.

0:04:290:04:33

And that's a big, big risk, especially in today's climate.

0:04:340:04:38

But it isn't just finances that worry him.

0:04:380:04:41

It takes time to build up friendships. And, you know, I'm 42.

0:04:410:04:46

I'm 42 now, and Claire's no spring chicken herself.

0:04:460:04:50

Right? I just think to start again and get new friends

0:04:500:04:53

like the friends that we have here, is a tall task.

0:04:530:04:57

Saying goodbye to friends may be hard enough.

0:04:580:05:01

But for Paul, there's an even bigger price to emigrating.

0:05:010:05:04

Leaving family, it's going to be extremely difficult.

0:05:040:05:08

I'm not really an emotional person but that quite...

0:05:080:05:11

It's quite cutting.

0:05:130:05:14

To think that, to think that something could happen

0:05:150:05:19

and I couldn't be there to help is...

0:05:190:05:23

very daunting.

0:05:230:05:24

However, Claire's confident that the benefits of moving could offer

0:05:290:05:32

the family a better future.

0:05:320:05:34

I'm not naive enough to believe that the grass is always greener

0:05:340:05:37

but I do think we ought to go and find out if it is.

0:05:370:05:40

If not just for us, for the girls as well

0:05:400:05:42

so they get that life experience.

0:05:420:05:44

And even the girls can see plenty to look forward to in New Zealand.

0:05:440:05:49

I'm excited cos my cousins live there

0:05:490:05:52

and it's fun there and nice and hot.

0:05:520:05:56

I'm excited cos I love my cousins.

0:05:560:06:00

It will be nice to go to New Zealand because it will be a change.

0:06:000:06:05

But I do like it in England because there's lots of...

0:06:050:06:10

I know everywhere and stuff. So...

0:06:100:06:13

Elise is also a keen horse rider

0:06:140:06:17

and moving down under could make another dream come true.

0:06:170:06:20

Mum, can we have a horse again in New Zealand?

0:06:220:06:26

I don't know about that, Elise, we'll have to see what it's like, won't we?

0:06:260:06:29

For Claire, it's a chance to enjoy the lifestyle

0:06:290:06:33

that's most appealing about New Zealand.

0:06:330:06:36

I think they'd have a lot more of an outdoor life.

0:06:360:06:40

More opportunities to do...

0:06:400:06:42

Elise would love it, because Elise loves...

0:06:420:06:46

They love being outside, don't they? They do.

0:06:460:06:49

And as soon as the weather starts to improve, they want to go out.

0:06:490:06:53

But we haven't been to New Zealand when it's been winter,

0:06:530:06:56

we went when it was sunny.

0:06:560:06:57

Very sunny, in the summer.

0:06:570:07:00

So, knowing what's at stake,

0:07:000:07:02

is Paul prepared to turn his life upside-down for Claire?

0:07:020:07:06

I'm happy to try and give it a go on behalf of Claire and the family.

0:07:060:07:11

If Paul was a big no and he didn't want to do it,

0:07:110:07:13

then I would be devastated.

0:07:130:07:15

I'm apprehensive about it.

0:07:150:07:17

We'll go out there and see what it has, make a more educated judgement.

0:07:170:07:23

If we don't try this, if we don't at least, you know, go for it,

0:07:230:07:28

we're going to be sitting here in five years, less maybe,

0:07:280:07:32

thinking, "We should have done, we should have at least had a try."

0:07:320:07:36

Claire has her work well and truly cut out in the week ahead.

0:07:360:07:41

It'll be a tough task convincing Paul that New Zealand is a gamble worth taking.

0:07:410:07:45

And with just a few days to do it in,

0:07:450:07:48

she could be facing the end of her dream.

0:07:480:07:50

The Richards are spending their week

0:07:500:07:52

in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city.

0:07:520:07:55

With a growing economy and plenty of wide-open spaces nearby,

0:07:550:07:59

it should offer a good mix of big city bustle and room to relax.

0:07:590:08:03

They're staying in Torbay on the north shore,

0:08:040:08:07

an up-and-coming area popular with families.

0:08:070:08:09

Home is a three-bedroom clapboard house.

0:08:110:08:14

Hopefully it'll get the week off to a good start.

0:08:140:08:17

Yeah, it's perfect for the week.

0:08:200:08:22

You've got a good view, haven't you?

0:08:220:08:25

That is very happy looking girls, but Claire isn't so relaxed.

0:08:250:08:29

I'm a bit anxious that Paul still won't realise,

0:08:290:08:34

won't see what I can see, I suppose.

0:08:340:08:38

At the end of the week, my head might tell me

0:08:380:08:41

something different to what it's telling me now.

0:08:410:08:43

Because now I'm still in the..

0:08:430:08:45

If we were to come here, we're giving up an awful lot.

0:08:450:08:49

Back home, the Richards own a large four-bedroom house in Penkridge.

0:08:570:09:01

They believe it's worth around £245,000.

0:09:010:09:06

They hope to find a home of equal value down under,

0:09:060:09:09

and Paul has a few extras on his wish list too.

0:09:090:09:12

Ideally, in a new property, I would like a place that

0:09:120:09:14

I could call my own, in which I could set up an office.

0:09:140:09:17

I'd like it to be... have more land, really.

0:09:170:09:20

The girls are at an age now where they must have their own bedroom.

0:09:200:09:24

And if we had a paddock for a horse, that would be even better.

0:09:240:09:27

Today, we'll give the Richards a taste of Auckland's property market.

0:09:290:09:33

We'll show them three options based on what they want

0:09:330:09:37

from their ideal home and what they can afford.

0:09:370:09:40

After seeing for themselves what's on offer,

0:09:400:09:42

they will find out how much each house costs.

0:09:420:09:45

Their first stop is in the Stanmore Bay area,

0:09:450:09:49

30 miles north of the city centre.

0:09:490:09:51

It would mean a 45-minute commute for Paul,

0:09:510:09:54

but it's located in a quiet backwater surrounded by coastline,

0:09:540:09:58

ideal for the outdoor life Claire is hoping for.

0:09:580:10:02

This three-bedroom house has a terrace and gardens,

0:10:020:10:04

so the residents can enjoy the sea views.

0:10:040:10:07

But will it make a splash with the Richards?

0:10:070:10:09

-Very nice. I'll take my sunglasses off.

-Mummy...

0:10:110:10:14

Nice.

0:10:140:10:16

It is nice, look at your view from your lounge window!

0:10:160:10:19

It's quite comparable in size to our living room back in the UK,

0:10:190:10:23

-isn't it?

-Yeah.

-I wouldn't say it was any smaller or any bigger.

0:10:230:10:28

That's a cautious start from Paul.

0:10:280:10:30

Can the kitchen heat things up a little?

0:10:300:10:32

Do you think it would be big enough for you, Claire?

0:10:320:10:35

I don't think this would be big enough for me, no, not the kitchen.

0:10:350:10:38

Er, perhaps not.

0:10:380:10:40

While the girls test out the exterior features and fittings,

0:10:400:10:44

mum and dad continue with the tour.

0:10:440:10:46

Let's have a look what's in this one. Oh, it's an office.

0:10:460:10:49

-That's all right.

-Yeah.

0:10:490:10:51

Pretty a decent sized one.

0:10:510:10:52

Good office, that's what you want, an office.

0:10:520:10:55

But, knowing you, it will become office-cum-junk room.

0:10:550:10:58

Having an office would be a plus for Paul,

0:10:580:11:01

but with only three bedrooms available, he may have a fight on his hands to keep it.

0:11:010:11:06

These are comparable to the size of bedrooms the girls have got now.

0:11:060:11:09

Let's have a look in here. This has got to be the bathroom.

0:11:090:11:12

-I would think so.

-Process of elimination.

0:11:120:11:14

-Hmm.

-OK.

0:11:140:11:16

-It's nice, though.

-That's got to be a bedroom, hasn't it?

0:11:160:11:19

Oh, my life!

0:11:190:11:21

SHE GASPS

0:11:210:11:23

-I wasn't expecting this.

-It's more of a formal lounge, isn't it?

0:11:230:11:26

Oh, this is lovely.

0:11:260:11:28

The open-plan sitting room would be ideal for a large family,

0:11:280:11:31

-which just leaves the final bedroom to explore.

-Master bedroom, Claire.

0:11:310:11:35

Yeah. It's nice and bright.

0:11:350:11:38

Nice sized. Is this en suite?

0:11:380:11:40

I don't know, I hope so. Or is it just a cupboard?

0:11:400:11:43

Oh, no!

0:11:430:11:44

No? What is it?!

0:11:440:11:46

SHE GASPS Oh! A walk-in wardrobe.

0:11:460:11:50

-Just what you've always wanted.

-Yes.

0:11:500:11:53

-You don't get that in Penkridge.

-No!

0:11:530:11:56

The views may be to die for and the garden a big hit with the girls,

0:11:560:12:00

but can they make up for a lack of bedrooms in this house?

0:12:000:12:03

And more importantly, is it within their £245,000 budget?

0:12:030:12:08

-450.

-450, and I'm going for 500.

0:12:090:12:12

£239,000. 495,000.

0:12:140:12:18

So I was the closest.

0:12:180:12:21

-Yeah, fair dos.

-Round one to me, I'd say.

0:12:210:12:25

I'm pleased with that, aren't you?

0:12:250:12:27

-That's...

-Yeah.

-..a pleasant price.

-Comfortable with it.

-Pleasant price.

0:12:270:12:31

OK.

0:12:310:12:33

It looks like a win on points for Claire after the first house,

0:12:350:12:39

but without that fourth bedroom it failed to deliver the knockout blow.

0:12:390:12:43

So can the second property offer more without a big jump in price?

0:12:430:12:47

It's in Browns Bay, an area popular with Brits emigrating to enjoy

0:12:470:12:52

the nearby surfing beaches. As a new build,

0:12:520:12:55

it's closer in style to the Richards' current home,

0:12:550:12:58

but will it impress?

0:12:580:13:00

-I'm liking that. I'm liking that. Modern.

-Are you?

-Yeah.

0:13:000:13:04

I don't know what I think actually, at the moment.

0:13:040:13:08

I don't know.

0:13:080:13:09

Well, I think that's ALMOST a yes.

0:13:090:13:11

-Go on then, let's look and see.

-It's like Christmas!

-Like Christmas?

0:13:110:13:16

-Oh.

-It's a garage.

0:13:160:13:18

You could have this as where somebody stops, couldn't you?

0:13:180:13:22

What, in the garage? Where would you put the boat?

0:13:220:13:25

I don't know. The boat or the horses!

0:13:250:13:28

Next to the garage is the first downstairs bedroom.

0:13:280:13:32

It's not a main bedroom, is it? It's like a guestroom.

0:13:320:13:34

No, but again, it could be guest... guest quarters.

0:13:340:13:38

Oh.

0:13:390:13:41

The second comes equipped with its own en suite,

0:13:410:13:43

but it's not clear who for.

0:13:430:13:45

I'm just intrigued at the moment to see

0:13:450:13:47

whether this is a guest area or actually the master bedroom.

0:13:470:13:53

Let's find out.

0:13:530:13:54

This is a topsy-turvy home, with living space on the first floor.

0:13:560:14:00

This is nice. So, main living room and this is obviously your veranda.

0:14:000:14:06

Yeah. You can't see the beach at all, can you? Or the sea.

0:14:060:14:09

You can see the sea a little bit through that gap,

0:14:090:14:12

but it's nothing compared to what the other one was like.

0:14:120:14:15

Without the wow factor,

0:14:150:14:16

this house is starting to look decidedly undercooked.

0:14:160:14:19

-Fairly nice, big kitchen, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is actually.

0:14:190:14:22

-No, I can see the potential in it, it needs a bit of a face lift.

-Clean.

0:14:220:14:28

The toilet is horrible.

0:14:280:14:30

There's no shortage of critics.

0:14:310:14:33

I wouldn't want to...

0:14:330:14:35

..to sleep in here, personally, and wake up...

0:14:370:14:40

Well, no, it's not an offensive view, Paul. It's just nothing of...

0:14:400:14:45

Doesn't grab you, but it's not offensive in any way,

0:14:450:14:48

it's not like a wall or something.

0:14:480:14:49

Yeah, I'm just not getting I'd want to move to the other side

0:14:490:14:53

-of the world to move into this property.

-No.

0:14:530:14:55

Paul may have hit the nail on the head.

0:14:550:14:57

Despite having the fourth bedroom they need,

0:14:570:15:00

this house simply hasn't impressed.

0:15:000:15:02

And given that it's closer to the city than the first,

0:15:020:15:05

will its price be the final nail in its coffin?

0:15:050:15:09

I'll be surprised if...

0:15:090:15:11

as a property, if this is more than 400,000.

0:15:110:15:17

Shall we see how much it is worth?

0:15:170:15:19

-Yeah?

-Yeah. OK.

-Go on, you do it.

0:15:200:15:24

SHE GASPS

0:15:240:15:25

Oh, my gosh. There you go.

0:15:250:15:28

Priced out of it.

0:15:280:15:30

-£279,000.

-Pounds.

0:15:300:15:33

579,000.

0:15:330:15:37

-That's surprised me. I wouldn't pay £280,000 for this.

-No.

0:15:370:15:41

-So, it's quite disappointing, really.

-Yeah.

0:15:430:15:46

It is. You're paying for the postcode, aren't you?

0:15:480:15:51

This house may be a des res but at £30,000 over budget,

0:15:520:15:57

it's put a big dent in Claire's hopes of moving.

0:15:570:16:00

Heading further from the city should give the Richards

0:16:000:16:03

more of the indoor and outdoor space they're looking for.

0:16:030:16:06

The last stop is in Waimauku,

0:16:080:16:10

just under 20 miles northwest of the city.

0:16:100:16:13

It's a rural area with a coastline facing the Tasman Sea.

0:16:130:16:17

This modern bungalow comes with plenty of land,

0:16:190:16:22

perhaps even enough for a paddock.

0:16:220:16:24

But can it entice Paul away from the city?

0:16:240:16:27

-Look at this forecourt.

-Oh, wow, look at that.

0:16:270:16:31

Oh, look at that veranda!

0:16:310:16:33

Oh, rabbits! And guinea pigs!

0:16:330:16:35

-Claire, look at this, though, in front.

-Aw!

0:16:350:16:39

SHE GASPS Look!

0:16:390:16:41

-Wow!

-Girls, look this side.

-Look, sheep!

0:16:410:16:45

Oh, and hens!

0:16:450:16:47

-We'll be able to have a horse.

-Well, I don't know about a horse.

0:16:470:16:50

-You can have a few old nags.

-A few old nags! I love it.

0:16:500:16:54

-It's lovely.

-It's very nice. Very impressive.

0:16:540:16:56

-I could actually see us living here, to be honest.

-Big garage.

-Yeah.

0:16:560:17:01

Cos I'd need a big lawnmower. Let's go and have a look inside now.

0:17:010:17:04

See if it's as good inside as outside.

0:17:040:17:06

See if it holds the promise that the outside holds.

0:17:060:17:09

Wipe your feet.

0:17:100:17:12

Ooh!

0:17:150:17:16

-Oh, the music room.

-Yeah.

0:17:160:17:19

Wow. Office, really, isn't it?

0:17:190:17:21

Yeah, that's very nice as well.

0:17:210:17:23

That's a perfect start.

0:17:230:17:25

So, have the Richards arrived at their dream home?

0:17:250:17:27

Ooh, I like it.

0:17:270:17:29

-Oh, yes.

-Ooh!

0:17:290:17:31

-Oh, yes.

-Wow.

0:17:310:17:33

-I want to live here.

-Do you?

0:17:330:17:36

Do you want to move, pack your bags and come and move in?

0:17:360:17:39

This house has left everyone speechless.

0:17:400:17:43

And the tour has hardly even begun.

0:17:430:17:45

I can see myself definitely coming back here of an evening,

0:17:450:17:49

when the sun's shining.

0:17:490:17:51

-Because the kids can be well away, can't they, Claire?

-Yeah.

0:17:510:17:54

-Doing their thing.

-And feel as though the kids will be safe.

0:17:540:17:58

It's lovely.

0:17:590:18:00

That's exactly the response Claire was hoping for.

0:18:000:18:04

And after two failures,

0:18:040:18:05

this house looks to be just what the family was dreaming of.

0:18:050:18:09

-This must be the master bedroom, I'd say.

-This is...

0:18:090:18:12

Look at that for a view out as well. Very nice.

0:18:120:18:16

SHE GASPS

0:18:180:18:19

-Walk-through wardrobe.

-It's a walk-in wardrobe!

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:18:190:18:23

Shoes all there, yeah.

0:18:230:18:26

-I can't fault it at the moment, there's no negatives, is there?

-No.

0:18:260:18:31

Should we go and see what else there is?

0:18:310:18:33

Let's just stay here a little bit.

0:18:330:18:36

Yeah, but there might be other rooms. Bigger rooms.

0:18:360:18:39

Yeah, come on then. Let's go and have a look.

0:18:390:18:42

Oh, it's another bedroom.

0:18:440:18:45

-That's all right. For one of the girls.

-Nice size again.

0:18:470:18:51

Could quite easily move in tomorrow.

0:18:510:18:53

Another decent size bedroom.

0:18:550:18:56

-This is the third bedroom. This is a good size as well.

-Very impressed.

0:18:560:19:01

-We better go.

-Got to stop saying very impressed.

-Yeah.

0:19:010:19:04

Every word is impressed.

0:19:040:19:06

I can't wait to find out the price on this!

0:19:070:19:11

This house has impressed on all fronts,

0:19:110:19:13

with its stylish, open-plan design.

0:19:130:19:16

It has plenty of room for everyone indoors and out.

0:19:160:19:19

It's everything the Richards wanted to find in a Kiwi home,

0:19:190:19:23

but can they afford it on their £245,000 budget?

0:19:230:19:28

It's definitely over 600 for me, with all that in mind.

0:19:280:19:33

-So what are you saying?

-625.

0:19:330:19:35

625. I'm going to go higher. 775.

0:19:350:19:39

-That's another 150,000 more than me.

-Yes.

-OK.

0:19:390:19:44

We ought to have a little money wager.

0:19:440:19:48

-775.

-625.

0:19:480:19:50

720, 720, dollars.

0:19:520:19:55

I think I'm closest. 720...

0:19:550:19:57

-Well, I'm almost 100 out.

-720,000.

0:19:570:20:01

Which is £347,000.

0:20:010:20:04

But that is a lot of money and it's out of our budget currently.

0:20:060:20:11

But...

0:20:110:20:13

If you compared that to back home.

0:20:130:20:16

What, £347,000, Claire?

0:20:160:20:18

We haven't got. Well, you don't know.

0:20:180:20:21

You don't know cos you don't know what your...

0:20:210:20:24

-job prospects might be.

-It's impressive. It's...

0:20:240:20:28

-Food for thought.

-Yeah.

0:20:280:20:30

And the Richards have had plenty of it today.

0:20:300:20:32

The first house was big on views but not on bedrooms.

0:20:340:20:38

The second property's postcode may have been right,

0:20:380:20:41

but the price certainly wasn't.

0:20:410:20:43

And the final stop was a genuine Kiwi dream house,

0:20:450:20:49

flooring even Paul despite its heavyweight price tag.

0:20:490:20:52

But has property in Auckland done enough to convince the Richards

0:20:540:20:58

that New Zealand could offer them a home?

0:20:580:21:00

Based on the properties that we've seen today,

0:21:010:21:04

our vote is going to go to...

0:21:040:21:06

..UK!

0:21:160:21:17

New Zealand!

0:21:170:21:18

Lis, why have you made that decision?

0:21:200:21:22

Well, I liked the houses in New Zealand, but...

0:21:220:21:25

..I just think that I prefer the ones in England.

0:21:270:21:31

Right, why have you said that, then?

0:21:310:21:33

Based on what you've seen, why have you said that?

0:21:330:21:35

Based on just the three properties we've seen today,

0:21:350:21:38

I can't say they are better than the ones we get in the UK.

0:21:380:21:41

Their day house hunting was a real eye-opener for the Richards.

0:21:470:21:51

And Paul and Elisa's vote showed Claire she still has a long way to go to win them over.

0:21:510:21:56

Which makes it vital that Auckland can offer Paul his dream job.

0:21:560:22:00

In the UK, Paul is an IT project manager.

0:22:010:22:05

It's a career he loves and can see a future in, at least at home.

0:22:050:22:09

I would like to have the same opportunities that I have here

0:22:090:22:12

to advance that career even further.

0:22:120:22:14

I think if those opportunities weren't available for me,

0:22:140:22:17

then, on a personal basis, I just don't think the move

0:22:170:22:22

would be a thing for me.

0:22:220:22:25

But there is one thing New Zealand could tempt him with -

0:22:250:22:28

a better work/life balance.

0:22:280:22:30

I am personally missing out on that, the children are missing out

0:22:300:22:33

on me being around.

0:22:330:22:34

I get to see them for about a half-hour to an hour

0:22:340:22:37

at the end of their day before they go to bed.

0:22:370:22:40

This move could all hinge on what New Zealand's job market

0:22:430:22:46

might have to offer Paul.

0:22:460:22:47

So, he's heading into the city to meet Jonathan Maltby,

0:22:480:22:52

a local IT recruitment expert.

0:22:520:22:54

You've seen my CV.

0:22:540:22:56

What do you think the outlook could be like for me?

0:22:560:22:58

I'll give you a good snapshot of what's going on.

0:22:580:23:01

The companies that we tend to deal with...

0:23:010:23:04

relate more to the people who have come from a technical background,

0:23:040:23:07

they've been a developer, gone through the ranks

0:23:070:23:09

-and they've become a project manager.

-That is very good news for me

0:23:090:23:12

because that's the kind of background I currently come from.

0:23:120:23:16

I have left the extreme technical development aspects,

0:23:160:23:19

and moved to that exact area that you're talking about.

0:23:190:23:22

It's a great start.

0:23:220:23:24

Being able to fit into a role he already knows would be ideal.

0:23:240:23:28

Meanwhile, a few miles away,

0:23:280:23:30

Claire and the girls also head off to try something familiar.

0:23:300:23:33

-Claire.

-Claire. Hi, Claire.

0:23:330:23:35

Claire and the older girls have ridden before,

0:23:350:23:38

but today is Frankie's first time.

0:23:380:23:41

It's a special treat for everyone.

0:23:410:23:43

I am going to put you on the biggest horse, the best horse we've got.

0:23:430:23:47

-Hold the saddle and pull yourself up.

-That's the girl.

-That's it. OK.

0:23:500:23:54

Enjoying the outdoors together is one of the big reasons

0:23:550:23:58

Claire is so keen on moving down under.

0:23:580:24:01

But for Paul, there's an important question.

0:24:010:24:04

Could a career in New Zealand offer him the time to join them?

0:24:040:24:07

What is the normal working hours that people tend to work?

0:24:070:24:12

In New Zealand we have quite a not necessarily laid-back,

0:24:120:24:15

but very much an easy-going sort of culture.

0:24:150:24:17

Knock-off time is usually about five.

0:24:170:24:20

In the summertime people tend to leave in the evenings,

0:24:200:24:24

probably 4.30-5, maybe 5.30-6, because we have daylight saving

0:24:240:24:28

and it gets dark at about 8.30-9,

0:24:280:24:30

people can head down to the beach with their families right after work

0:24:300:24:33

and that is a really good atmosphere to be in.

0:24:330:24:36

That all sounds very good.

0:24:360:24:38

That's exactly what I'm trying to get through for the family.

0:24:380:24:41

That's just what Paul had been hoping for.

0:24:410:24:43

So, is life in New Zealand starting to look more appealing?

0:24:430:24:46

Across town, I think the answer is a definite yes.

0:24:460:24:50

We haven't ridden for quite a long time

0:24:500:24:52

and it was just the best experience I think I've had an absolutely ages.

0:24:520:24:57

It was just lovely.

0:24:570:24:59

It was the best horse riding I've ever done, really.

0:24:590:25:03

Well, at the start I was a bit nervous

0:25:030:25:07

and at the end I was happy.

0:25:070:25:11

It was probably the best horse I'd ever been on.

0:25:110:25:15

It was just amazing.

0:25:150:25:16

Just sniffing now because of my allergy to horses, but it was...

0:25:160:25:21

I'd do it again ten times over, it was that lovely, that good.

0:25:210:25:25

Seeing his family happy and being able to share it

0:25:250:25:28

would be priceless for Paul.

0:25:280:25:30

But would that change in work/life balance mean taking a cut in salary?

0:25:300:25:34

What kind of packages do you think would be on offer for myself?

0:25:340:25:38

For someone in a team lead sort of role,

0:25:380:25:40

you're looking at about anywhere between, say, 90 to 110.

0:25:400:25:44

In some cases pushing a little bit higher.

0:25:440:25:47

But that all depends on the structure and the size of the company as well.

0:25:470:25:51

The figures are comparable to what he earns in the UK.

0:25:510:25:55

So has Paul heard enough to convince in New Zealand could offer him

0:25:550:25:58

a career worth leaving home for?

0:25:580:26:01

Given the discussion I've had today about work opportunities

0:26:010:26:04

in New Zealand and relevant packages, my vote goes to...

0:26:040:26:08

..New Zealand.

0:26:140:26:15

I managed to find out that there appears to be an awful lot

0:26:180:26:22

of opportunities available.

0:26:220:26:23

But I think one of the clinchers is the fact of the laid-back

0:26:230:26:28

attitude too, there's much more of a focus on getting the job done

0:26:280:26:31

but the family aspect is also important as well.

0:26:310:26:34

Let's just say I think it's one more step closer to

0:26:340:26:39

the possibility of moving to Auckland.

0:26:390:26:41

I think that's a cautious but happy Paul.

0:26:410:26:44

And back at the house,

0:26:440:26:45

the girls have a request after their day out.

0:26:450:26:48

So now we want a horse.

0:26:480:26:50

-Do you?

-So can you buy us one?

0:26:500:26:53

How do you feel about moving to New Zealand now then, Paul?

0:26:530:26:57

Well, today has put one step in the, let's just say,

0:26:570:27:01

-right direction.

-Right direction.

0:27:010:27:02

It's a matter of just finding that right job now.

0:27:020:27:05

Yay! That's good news then, girls.

0:27:050:27:08

But there are obviously other risks, other factors, which are...

0:27:090:27:13

-Which come into play.

-Yeah.

0:27:130:27:16

Paul is playing his cards close to his chest,

0:27:220:27:25

but that vote for New Zealand is a big step in the right direction

0:27:250:27:28

for Claire. But with houses looking pricey

0:27:280:27:31

and the girls keen on a new family member,

0:27:310:27:33

it's crucial that the Richards find out if this move

0:27:330:27:36

is affordable or not.

0:27:360:27:38

Selling their four-bedroom house in Penkridge is vital to raising

0:27:390:27:43

the funds they need to emigrate.

0:27:430:27:45

Paul and Claire believe it's worth around £245,000.

0:27:450:27:49

We've asked two local estate agents to give us their opinions.

0:27:490:27:53

Lovely feature fireplace. Stands out well.

0:27:530:27:56

And the French doors going into the dining room.

0:27:560:27:59

Lovely. Nice contemporary kitchen, nice double oven there.

0:28:030:28:07

Lovely extra room, conservatories.

0:28:080:28:11

Nice family, they've got it set up as a dining room, which is perfect.

0:28:110:28:14

-Very good, nicely decorated lounge.

-Oh, thank you.

0:28:180:28:21

Colour scheme is very good, very popular today.

0:28:210:28:24

Very modern, up-to-date kitchen.

0:28:260:28:28

The people who live here have utilised the garage that was.

0:28:280:28:31

I'm all in favour of that.

0:28:310:28:33

There you go, selling point.

0:28:330:28:35

Lovely, airy room. Perfect family home. People like this.

0:28:350:28:38

I like this man.

0:28:380:28:39

He can come again.

0:28:410:28:42

Looks like these people are supporters of the second best team.

0:28:420:28:46

Not all of us! Not all of us!

0:28:460:28:48

After Wolverhampton Wanderers.

0:28:480:28:50

Lovely bright room, just needs de-cluttering slightly.

0:28:520:28:56

-I thought Lisa's room was nice.

-I totally agree. Totally agree.

0:28:560:28:59

So I'd place the property on the market currently

0:28:590:29:02

at about 270,000.

0:29:020:29:05

With a view to getting round about 260, 265,000.

0:29:050:29:10

Overall impressions of the property, very sought-for location,

0:29:120:29:15

four bedrooms, very central to Stafford as well as Cannock.

0:29:150:29:19

Value, I'd say around 249,950.

0:29:190:29:22

For a quicker sale, between 230 to 240.

0:29:220:29:25

Even though they're both quite different figures,

0:29:270:29:30

we know that slap in the middle of those is probably

0:29:300:29:34

what we would want for it

0:29:340:29:36

and expect to get for it, or wouldn't sell it for any less anyway.

0:29:360:29:39

Our house looks good there, on camera.

0:29:390:29:41

And you're quite happy with the way it's been portrayed,

0:29:410:29:44

cos that's the way it is. So realistically...

0:29:440:29:46

Is that what you think?

0:29:460:29:48

In my head, that's kind of said, "We have got a really nice house,

0:29:480:29:51

"why would we want to be giving it up?"

0:29:510:29:53

You'd have to de-clutter certain rooms

0:29:530:29:55

and take the professionals' advice.

0:29:550:29:57

Which I've been saying for quite some time.

0:29:570:29:59

Yeah, but I think, in regards to the cluttering,

0:29:590:30:03

I think that's cos, as a family, we've outgrown that house.

0:30:030:30:07

Well, at least they agree it's a fair valuation.

0:30:070:30:10

And, if they could get a good price, they'd have a budget of

0:30:110:30:15

between £180,000 and £245,000,

0:30:150:30:19

depending on whether they took on a mortgage.

0:30:190:30:22

But what about their weekly cost of living in New Zealand?

0:30:220:30:25

Yorkshire puddings.

0:30:250:30:26

A pound in the UK, are £2.64 here,

0:30:260:30:29

and the kids love Yorkshire puddings.

0:30:290:30:31

-I'll have to make my own.

-Have you put those in?

-I've put those in.

0:30:310:30:34

Toilet roll, £3.34 and we get through tons of that.

0:30:340:30:39

We'll have to use newspaper.

0:30:400:30:41

THEY LAUGH

0:30:410:30:43

With the weekly shop going up by more than £30, it looks as if

0:30:430:30:47

living in New Zealand could be a painful experience, in lots of ways.

0:30:470:30:52

That's... I mean...

0:30:520:30:54

It is a bit of an eye-opener, actually.

0:30:540:30:56

Because Paul's New Zealand salary would be almost equal to his UK earnings,

0:30:560:31:00

they've opted to base their mortgage calculations

0:31:000:31:03

on a mid price property.

0:31:030:31:05

-Yeah.

-Mortgage repayments. Yeah?

0:31:050:31:08

850, here in the UK

0:31:100:31:14

and in New Zealand it would be 668.

0:31:140:31:17

Paul's spotted a problem.

0:31:180:31:19

OK, so even though the figures are cheaper there at 668,

0:31:210:31:26

and it's 880, right...

0:31:260:31:28

-You're paying it for longer.

-..it doesn't really reflect...

0:31:280:31:32

No, because you pay it for a longer period.

0:31:320:31:34

Yeah? So we're paying 850 over the next six years,

0:31:340:31:36

whereas we'd be paying 668 over 20 years,

0:31:360:31:40

which defeats one of the objects

0:31:400:31:42

we've tried to do with the mortgage. Anyway...

0:31:420:31:45

The figures don't look promising, so what's the bottom line?

0:31:460:31:50

It looks here that we'll be £200 a month better off in the UK

0:31:500:31:53

than what we would in New Zealand.

0:31:530:31:55

-For me now, knowing all of this...

-There's a lot to weigh up.

0:31:570:32:01

Yeah, there is still an awful lot to weigh up.

0:32:010:32:03

We could afford to live here, OK,

0:32:030:32:06

but it would mean us taking on a larger mortgage in terms of...

0:32:060:32:11

than what we've currently got, but also the term of that mortgage

0:32:110:32:15

and is that something we really want to be doing?

0:32:150:32:17

-It's something to consider.

-It is something to consider,

0:32:190:32:21

but it is...

0:32:210:32:22

..from what I've experienced so far, that is the number one factor.

0:32:240:32:27

-Which was the job. It's now changed to this, hasn't it?

-Yes.

0:32:270:32:31

It looks like emigrating could be affordable,

0:32:310:32:33

but only if the Richards are willing to dig deep.

0:32:330:32:36

So how will they vote?

0:32:360:32:38

OK, so based on the cost of living out here in New Zealand,

0:32:380:32:43

our vote goes to...

0:32:430:32:45

-The UK.

-The UK.

0:32:530:32:54

I think, even though we've said the UK, based on those figures,

0:32:590:33:03

-I think we still need to evaluate...

-The whole lifestyle.

0:33:030:33:06

The whole way of living over here and ultimately what you want, I think.

0:33:060:33:09

-You took the words right out of my mouth.

-There you go.

0:33:090:33:12

That's cos we're peas in a pod. That's cos we evenly matched.

0:33:120:33:16

-No, but I think you've got to weigh everything up, haven't you?

-We have.

0:33:160:33:20

And, if your lifestyle is going to exceed everything else,

0:33:200:33:24

then that's ultimately what you go for.

0:33:240:33:27

-But cost of living-wise, it's definitely living in the UK.

-Yes.

0:33:270:33:31

Seeing the figures laid out in front of them

0:33:360:33:39

put the brakes on even Claire's enthusiasm to emigrate,

0:33:390:33:42

but could those high prices be worth paying?

0:33:420:33:45

For Claire, it's the possibility of living a better lifestyle

0:33:450:33:49

and being close to her family that's always been behind this dream.

0:33:490:33:53

The Richards are visiting Auckland

0:33:530:33:56

at the start of the Kiwi winter.

0:33:560:33:57

With average winter temperatures of around 14 degrees,

0:33:570:34:00

living and outdoor lifestyle is a year-long prospect.

0:34:000:34:04

For Claire, this chance to spend time together is priceless.

0:34:050:34:09

It's for me, as well, it's for Paul,

0:34:100:34:12

but it's for them, it's for their futures.

0:34:120:34:14

I think maybe they'll keep their childhood for longer,

0:34:140:34:16

staying here, rather than...

0:34:160:34:18

the sort of things you might see happening in the UK.

0:34:180:34:21

And Paul can also see how much living down under

0:34:230:34:26

could offer the family.

0:34:260:34:28

We very rarely get to do anything of an evening.

0:34:280:34:31

You know, by the time I get home from work,

0:34:310:34:33

Claire's already had a few hours with the children,

0:34:330:34:36

predominantly stuck inside or at clubs, you know?

0:34:360:34:40

Given the fact that we can be outside

0:34:410:34:43

till later on in an evening,

0:34:430:34:45

for the vast majority of the time

0:34:450:34:47

throughout the year,

0:34:470:34:49

it's a very, very, very big positive.

0:34:490:34:52

With so many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors,

0:34:530:34:56

the Richards' lifestyle could change for ever, if they make the move.

0:34:560:35:01

It seems a very safe environment out here for the children.

0:35:010:35:04

They can safely play out on the beaches, whereas back home

0:35:040:35:07

we'd potentially be, "Where are they?"

0:35:070:35:10

You know, they couldn't be able to run free.

0:35:100:35:12

You know, exercising all the time, running up and down on the beach,

0:35:120:35:15

again, is another positive.

0:35:150:35:17

So it's all positives at the moment.

0:35:170:35:19

With the final vote only a couple of days away,

0:35:190:35:22

meeting up with Claire's brother and family is a welcome break

0:35:220:35:25

from the strain of such a big decision.

0:35:250:35:28

Making new friends may take time, but being back together has

0:35:280:35:32

reminded Claire of what inspired her dream in the first place.

0:35:320:35:35

All that I've seen and we've done so far

0:35:350:35:37

and seeing how the children are,

0:35:370:35:40

it does bring it home to me how important it is.

0:35:400:35:44

I'm hoping that what he sees here and what he's done here,

0:35:440:35:47

I'm hoping that he thinks, "Yeah, it is better."

0:35:470:35:50

For Claire, New Zealand would mean being close to people

0:35:510:35:54

and a lifestyle she loves, but have Paul and the girls

0:35:540:35:58

been convinced that Kiwi living is for them, too?

0:35:580:36:01

Based on the lifestyle here in New Zealand, our vote goes to...

0:36:020:36:07

-ALL: New Zealand!

-New Zealand.

0:36:130:36:16

So far, there's been nothing to fault

0:36:190:36:21

anything to do with the lifestyle.

0:36:210:36:23

The beaches, the scenery, the climate, the outdoor living,

0:36:230:36:27

everything is superb.

0:36:270:36:28

That's quite a turnaround from Paul

0:36:310:36:33

and great news for Claire.

0:36:330:36:35

And, to top things off,

0:36:350:36:37

a family barbecue is a fitting end to the day.

0:36:370:36:40

-Do you want a go?

-No, it's November, Rob. You can't do this in November.

0:36:440:36:48

It's not only the seasons that are confused down under.

0:36:480:36:51

After not seeing each other for three years, some of the family

0:36:510:36:55

need a little more time to put faces and names together again.

0:36:550:36:58

Grandma!

0:36:580:37:00

LAUGHTER

0:37:000:37:01

Thanks, Ben.

0:37:010:37:03

I don't know why he's calling me grandma,

0:37:030:37:04

unless I look like my mother.

0:37:040:37:06

And while the girls catch up on Kiwi fashions,

0:37:060:37:08

Mum and Dad can drink to old friends.

0:37:080:37:11

-Ready?

-Cheers.

-Cheers.

0:37:110:37:13

Good to see you, good to have you here.

0:37:130:37:15

The Kiwi lifestyle was a big success with the Richards

0:37:200:37:24

and seeing familiar faces

0:37:240:37:25

would make emigrating a lot easier to handle,

0:37:250:37:28

but being reunited with family in New Zealand won't come

0:37:280:37:31

without the pain of leaving others behind at home.

0:37:310:37:34

Right, do you think we're OK to let the children watch it?

0:37:360:37:39

-Let's ask them. Do you want to see what people have got to say?

-Yeah.

0:37:390:37:43

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-Yeah? OK.

0:37:430:37:46

Hello, Paul. Hello, Claire.

0:37:480:37:50

'Hello, girls. Woo!'

0:37:500:37:52

Hi, Paul,

0:37:520:37:54

Claire and girls.

0:37:540:37:56

Hi, Claire, Paul and the Penkridge three.

0:37:560:37:59

I've worried about Claire from

0:37:590:38:01

the day she was born and I

0:38:010:38:03

never, ever, you know,

0:38:030:38:05

go very long without thinking about her,

0:38:050:38:08

some time or other.

0:38:080:38:09

I think the lifestyle, for them, is good there,

0:38:090:38:12

cos that's the way they are.

0:38:120:38:14

I think it will be the best thing ever for them,

0:38:150:38:19

but I'll be gutted.

0:38:190:38:20

I don't want them to go.

0:38:200:38:22

Well, I'll just be brokenhearted.

0:38:230:38:26

Yeah, we've got two children,

0:38:260:38:27

then we wouldn't have any children, would we?

0:38:270:38:30

If they feel that they can

0:38:300:38:32

move to New Zealand and better themselves

0:38:320:38:34

more than what they have done, well,

0:38:340:38:37

we can't say anything against you.

0:38:370:38:41

We'll support them, but I don't want them to go, obviously.

0:38:410:38:45

I'm going to miss the girls hugely.

0:38:450:38:47

They're... It's been an honour

0:38:470:38:50

being their godfather,

0:38:500:38:54

and watching them growing up over the last 12 years.

0:38:540:38:57

It's going to be like losing part of the family, you know?

0:38:570:39:00

It's going to be hard.

0:39:020:39:04

It's being selfish, I know,

0:39:040:39:05

to say that we don't want you to go,

0:39:050:39:08

but we don't really.

0:39:080:39:10

But whatever you decide, we'll back you up.

0:39:100:39:13

You know, somewhere down inside I just...

0:39:130:39:16

I can't think about that one.

0:39:210:39:24

We just wish you well.

0:39:240:39:27

And...

0:39:280:39:29

buy a big house so we can

0:39:290:39:31

come and stay with you.

0:39:310:39:33

So what do you think of that, then?

0:39:340:39:36

Well...

0:39:360:39:37

-You look like you're a bit touched by it all.

-Yeah, I was.

0:39:390:39:43

What about you, Elise? What do you think?

0:39:430:39:46

I'm going to be sad.

0:39:460:39:48

What? Cos you wouldn't see them so often?

0:39:490:39:51

Right. And what about you, Paul?

0:39:520:39:55

Yeah, I didn't think it would

0:39:550:39:57

pull at my heartstrings so much, to be honest.

0:39:570:40:00

One of my reasons why I don't really want to come out here

0:40:000:40:03

was cos of family and friends.

0:40:030:40:06

-But we've got cousins here.

-I know we've got family here,

0:40:060:40:09

but we haven't got all the family

0:40:090:40:11

out here, have we?

0:40:110:40:12

And it's not just family,

0:40:120:40:14

it's friends, as well.

0:40:140:40:15

Watching messages reminded the family just how much

0:40:190:40:23

they'd have to give up for a new start down under.

0:40:230:40:26

But, having fallen for the lifestyle,

0:40:260:40:28

they know the rewards that could be on offer, too.

0:40:280:40:31

So, how will the Richards make their final decision?

0:40:310:40:35

Had an absolutely brilliant time, all round.

0:40:400:40:43

Everything that we've done, everything we've experienced

0:40:430:40:45

has just been above and beyond

0:40:450:40:47

what I expected, I think, really.

0:40:470:40:49

Thinking about it properly, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

0:40:500:40:53

I am honestly, honestly

0:40:530:40:55

undecided on what to do at this moment in time.

0:40:550:40:58

I don't know how I'm going to make the decision.

0:40:580:41:00

I am really anxious about the way... what Paul's decision will be.

0:41:000:41:04

I think, for him, in fairness to him,

0:41:040:41:06

whatever decision he makes won't be...

0:41:060:41:08

Well, it's not going to be, for either of us, an easy decision.

0:41:080:41:11

My heart is kind of saying, you know,

0:41:110:41:14

I really should be coming out here,

0:41:140:41:16

because it is fantastic.

0:41:160:41:17

But, you know, decisions like this, you really shouldn't...

0:41:170:41:20

my personal view is you should be making with your head.

0:41:200:41:23

You know, weighing up absolutely every option.

0:41:230:41:25

If he turns around and says it's an absolute, definite no,

0:41:250:41:28

I think I'll be... well, be gutted, I suppose.

0:41:280:41:33

It would make me sad, but you know... definitely.

0:41:330:41:37

It's been a week to remember for the Richards,

0:41:370:41:40

but, at the end of it, will heads rule hearts,

0:41:400:41:42

or will the promise of a new life make Claire's dream come true?

0:41:420:41:46

Based on our week here in New Zealand,

0:41:470:41:50

our final vote goes to...

0:41:500:41:51

-The UK.

-New Zealand.

-New Zealand.

0:42:010:42:04

Elise, why have you voted for the UK?

0:42:050:42:08

I really like New Zealand, but I'd just miss my family.

0:42:080:42:12

I mean, it would be nice

0:42:120:42:13

if we could all live in New Zealand.

0:42:130:42:17

I voted for similar reasons as Elise, and based on the fact

0:42:190:42:21

on the friends and family that we'll be leaving behind,

0:42:210:42:24

I think it's too much.

0:42:240:42:25

So, have you dismissed it now, or are you going to consider?

0:42:250:42:29

No, I haven't dismissed it as an option.

0:42:290:42:31

It's given me a lot more information as to what

0:42:310:42:34

we need to take into consideration.

0:42:340:42:36

It's something that we need to take away and look and review.

0:42:360:42:40

Choosing the right future for your family is never easy

0:42:470:42:51

and it looks like this is one conversation

0:42:510:42:53

that still has some distance to run.

0:42:530:42:55

But, wherever their journey takes them,

0:42:550:42:57

we wish the Richards all the very best.
