If you had built a happy and successful life for your family, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
would you be willing to set aside all your doubts | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
and start over on the other side of the world? | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Claire Richards wants to follow her brother to New Zealand. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
It's for me as well but it's for them, it's for their futures. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
But her husband Paul has serious doubts. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
If we were to come here we're giving up an awful lot. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
And after a week of highs... | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
SHE GASPS Look! | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Yeah, fair dos. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
..and lows, they'll have to make a choice that could leave | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
someone broken-hearted. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
If he turns round and says it's an absolute, definite no, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
I think I'd be absolutely... | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Well, I'd be gutted, I suppose. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
I am honestly, honestly undecided on what to do at this moment in time. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
I don't know how I'm going to make the decision. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
For thousands of Brits every year, New Zealand offers the dream | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
of an ideal life set amongst epic surroundings. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
However, that dream doesn't always work out | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
and for many new arrivals, their journey could end right back where it started. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:24
Over the next few days, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
the Richards family will get a taste of everyday life in New Zealand. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
At the end of it, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
they'll face one of the biggest decisions of their lives - | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
whether to stay in the UK or to make the move down under for good. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
After crossing three continents, flying 11,000 miles | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
and facing 24 hours of in-flight movies, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
the Richards arrive in Auckland. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
On hand to meet them is a welcoming committee in the shape | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
of Claire's brother and his family, who moved out here nine years ago. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
It's a reminder of what this move is all about. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
It was lovely to see my brother, I haven't seen him for over a year | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
and I haven't seen my nieces in nearly two years, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
so that's really lovely. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
I'm going to embrace the situation | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
and take that opportunity to have a look at what working here | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
and living here has to offer for us and the family. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
We'll wait for the light bulb moment with Paul | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
-when it all comes on and he thinks, "Yay!" -We'll see. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
I didn't like the aeroplane food. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
I'm quite excited about the week. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
Back in the UK, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
the Richards live in the town of Penkridge in Staffordshire. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
They are Paul, an IT project manager, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Claire, a part-time primary school teacher, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
and their three daughters, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
nine-year-old Elise, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
seven-year-old Isabella, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
and Francesca, who is five. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
New Zealand has been on Claire's mind since 2003, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
when her brother and his family first made the move. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
After spending Christmas with them three years ago, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
she began to wonder if emigrating could be a real possibility. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
I've always wanted to go out there, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
partly because of my brother being there. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
And my mum and dad have been every year since he's been, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
and that's all they talk about, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
how fantastic it is, and for the children and the way of life. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
And then when we went, we did see that side of it. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
But all the time you are aware that you're on holiday | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
and therefore you see it through holiday glasses and you see it as... | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Well, you're not in the practicalities of it all, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
going to work and those sorts of things. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
But from what I did see of it, it is a fantastic place. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
That's my honest opinion on it. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Which may be different to yours, probably. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Moving down under may be Claire's dream, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
but convincing Paul to share it is not easy matter. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
In our relationship, I would say I'm the risk-adverse person | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
and I like to know what's around the corner. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
I like to know what's going to happen | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
and moving to New Zealand, the reality is, for me, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
it's a big change in the way that I conduct my life in terms of giving up everything | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
in that manner. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
Paul's also the main bread winner, and New Zealand would mean | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
giving up a career he loves and the security it provides for his family. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
One of the things, for me, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
is I'll be giving up a good job to go and effectively start again. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
And that's a big, big risk, especially in today's climate. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
But it isn't just finances that worry him. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
It takes time to build up friendships. And, you know, I'm 42. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46
I'm 42 now, and Claire's no spring chicken herself. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
Right? I just think to start again and get new friends | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
like the friends that we have here, is a tall task. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
Saying goodbye to friends may be hard enough. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
But for Paul, there's an even bigger price to emigrating. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
Leaving family, it's going to be extremely difficult. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
I'm not really an emotional person but that quite... | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
It's quite cutting. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:14
To think that, to think that something could happen | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
and I couldn't be there to help is... | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
very daunting. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
However, Claire's confident that the benefits of moving could offer | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
the family a better future. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
I'm not naive enough to believe that the grass is always greener | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
but I do think we ought to go and find out if it is. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
If not just for us, for the girls as well | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
so they get that life experience. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
And even the girls can see plenty to look forward to in New Zealand. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:49
I'm excited cos my cousins live there | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
and it's fun there and nice and hot. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
I'm excited cos I love my cousins. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
It will be nice to go to New Zealand because it will be a change. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
But I do like it in England because there's lots of... | 0:06:05 | 0:06:10
I know everywhere and stuff. So... | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
Elise is also a keen horse rider | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
and moving down under could make another dream come true. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
Mum, can we have a horse again in New Zealand? | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
I don't know about that, Elise, we'll have to see what it's like, won't we? | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
For Claire, it's a chance to enjoy the lifestyle | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
that's most appealing about New Zealand. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
I think they'd have a lot more of an outdoor life. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
More opportunities to do... | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
Elise would love it, because Elise loves... | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
They love being outside, don't they? They do. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
And as soon as the weather starts to improve, they want to go out. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
But we haven't been to New Zealand when it's been winter, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
we went when it was sunny. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:57
Very sunny, in the summer. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
So, knowing what's at stake, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
is Paul prepared to turn his life upside-down for Claire? | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
I'm happy to try and give it a go on behalf of Claire and the family. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:11
If Paul was a big no and he didn't want to do it, | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
then I would be devastated. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
I'm apprehensive about it. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
We'll go out there and see what it has, make a more educated judgement. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:23
If we don't try this, if we don't at least, you know, go for it, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
we're going to be sitting here in five years, less maybe, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
thinking, "We should have done, we should have at least had a try." | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
Claire has her work well and truly cut out in the week ahead. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
It'll be a tough task convincing Paul that New Zealand is a gamble worth taking. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
And with just a few days to do it in, | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
she could be facing the end of her dream. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
The Richards are spending their week | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
With a growing economy and plenty of wide-open spaces nearby, | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
it should offer a good mix of big city bustle and room to relax. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
They're staying in Torbay on the north shore, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
an up-and-coming area popular with families. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
Home is a three-bedroom clapboard house. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Hopefully it'll get the week off to a good start. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
Yeah, it's perfect for the week. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
You've got a good view, haven't you? | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
That is very happy looking girls, but Claire isn't so relaxed. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
I'm a bit anxious that Paul still won't realise, | 0:08:29 | 0:08:34
won't see what I can see, I suppose. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
At the end of the week, my head might tell me | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
something different to what it's telling me now. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Because now I'm still in the.. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
If we were to come here, we're giving up an awful lot. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
Back home, the Richards own a large four-bedroom house in Penkridge. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
They believe it's worth around £245,000. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:06
They hope to find a home of equal value down under, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
and Paul has a few extras on his wish list too. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
Ideally, in a new property, I would like a place that | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
I could call my own, in which I could set up an office. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
I'd like it to be... have more land, really. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
The girls are at an age now where they must have their own bedroom. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
And if we had a paddock for a horse, that would be even better. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
Today, we'll give the Richards a taste of Auckland's property market. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
We'll show them three options based on what they want | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
from their ideal home and what they can afford. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
After seeing for themselves what's on offer, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
they will find out how much each house costs. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Their first stop is in the Stanmore Bay area, | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
30 miles north of the city centre. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
It would mean a 45-minute commute for Paul, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
but it's located in a quiet backwater surrounded by coastline, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
ideal for the outdoor life Claire is hoping for. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
This three-bedroom house has a terrace and gardens, | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
so the residents can enjoy the sea views. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
But will it make a splash with the Richards? | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
-Very nice. I'll take my sunglasses off. -Mummy... | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
Nice. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16 | |
It is nice, look at your view from your lounge window! | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
It's quite comparable in size to our living room back in the UK, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
-isn't it? -Yeah. -I wouldn't say it was any smaller or any bigger. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:28
That's a cautious start from Paul. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
Can the kitchen heat things up a little? | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
Do you think it would be big enough for you, Claire? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
I don't think this would be big enough for me, no, not the kitchen. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
Er, perhaps not. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
While the girls test out the exterior features and fittings, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
mum and dad continue with the tour. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Let's have a look what's in this one. Oh, it's an office. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
-That's all right. -Yeah. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
Pretty a decent sized one. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:52
Good office, that's what you want, an office. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
But, knowing you, it will become office-cum-junk room. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
Having an office would be a plus for Paul, | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
but with only three bedrooms available, he may have a fight on his hands to keep it. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
These are comparable to the size of bedrooms the girls have got now. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
Let's have a look in here. This has got to be the bathroom. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
-I would think so. -Process of elimination. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
-Hmm. -OK. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
-It's nice, though. -That's got to be a bedroom, hasn't it? | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
Oh, my life! | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
SHE GASPS | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
-I wasn't expecting this. -It's more of a formal lounge, isn't it? | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
Oh, this is lovely. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
The open-plan sitting room would be ideal for a large family, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
-which just leaves the final bedroom to explore. -Master bedroom, Claire. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
Yeah. It's nice and bright. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
Nice sized. Is this en suite? | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
I don't know, I hope so. Or is it just a cupboard? | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
Oh, no! | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44
No? What is it?! | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
SHE GASPS Oh! A walk-in wardrobe. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
-Just what you've always wanted. -Yes. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
-You don't get that in Penkridge. -No! | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
The views may be to die for and the garden a big hit with the girls, | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
but can they make up for a lack of bedrooms in this house? | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
And more importantly, is it within their £245,000 budget? | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
-450. -450, and I'm going for 500. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
£239,000. 495,000. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:18
So I was the closest. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
-Yeah, fair dos. -Round one to me, I'd say. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
I'm pleased with that, aren't you? | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
-That's... -Yeah. -..a pleasant price. -Comfortable with it. -Pleasant price. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
OK. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33 | |
It looks like a win on points for Claire after the first house, | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
but without that fourth bedroom it failed to deliver the knockout blow. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
So can the second property offer more without a big jump in price? | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
It's in Browns Bay, an area popular with Brits emigrating to enjoy | 0:12:47 | 0:12:52
the nearby surfing beaches. As a new build, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
it's closer in style to the Richards' current home, | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
but will it impress? | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
-I'm liking that. I'm liking that. Modern. -Are you? -Yeah. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
I don't know what I think actually, at the moment. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:08
I don't know. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
Well, I think that's ALMOST a yes. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
-Go on then, let's look and see. -It's like Christmas! -Like Christmas? | 0:13:11 | 0:13:16
-Oh. -It's a garage. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
You could have this as where somebody stops, couldn't you? | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
What, in the garage? Where would you put the boat? | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
I don't know. The boat or the horses! | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
Next to the garage is the first downstairs bedroom. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
It's not a main bedroom, is it? It's like a guestroom. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
No, but again, it could be guest... guest quarters. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
Oh. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41 | |
The second comes equipped with its own en suite, | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
but it's not clear who for. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
I'm just intrigued at the moment to see | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
whether this is a guest area or actually the master bedroom. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:53
Let's find out. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:54
This is a topsy-turvy home, with living space on the first floor. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00
This is nice. So, main living room and this is obviously your veranda. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:06
Yeah. You can't see the beach at all, can you? Or the sea. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
You can see the sea a little bit through that gap, | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
but it's nothing compared to what the other one was like. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
Without the wow factor, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:16
this house is starting to look decidedly undercooked. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
-Fairly nice, big kitchen, isn't it? -Yeah, it is actually. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
-No, I can see the potential in it, it needs a bit of a face lift. -Clean. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:28
The toilet is horrible. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
There's no shortage of critics. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
I wouldn't want to... | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
..to sleep in here, personally, and wake up... | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
Well, no, it's not an offensive view, Paul. It's just nothing of... | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
Doesn't grab you, but it's not offensive in any way, | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
it's not like a wall or something. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:49
Yeah, I'm just not getting I'd want to move to the other side | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
-of the world to move into this property. -No. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:55
Paul may have hit the nail on the head. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
Despite having the fourth bedroom they need, | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
this house simply hasn't impressed. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
And given that it's closer to the city than the first, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
will its price be the final nail in its coffin? | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
I'll be surprised if... | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
as a property, if this is more than 400,000. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:17
Shall we see how much it is worth? | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
-Yeah? -Yeah. OK. -Go on, you do it. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
SHE GASPS | 0:15:24 | 0:15:25
Oh, my gosh. There you go. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
Priced out of it. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
-£279,000. -Pounds. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
579,000. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
-That's surprised me. I wouldn't pay £280,000 for this. -No. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
-So, it's quite disappointing, really. -Yeah. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
It is. You're paying for the postcode, aren't you? | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
This house may be a des res but at £30,000 over budget, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:57
it's put a big dent in Claire's hopes of moving. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
Heading further from the city should give the Richards | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
more of the indoor and outdoor space they're looking for. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
The last stop is in Waimauku, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
just under 20 miles northwest of the city. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
It's a rural area with a coastline facing the Tasman Sea. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
This modern bungalow comes with plenty of land, | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
perhaps even enough for a paddock. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:24
But can it entice Paul away from the city? | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
-Look at this forecourt. -Oh, wow, look at that. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:31
Oh, look at that veranda! | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
Oh, rabbits! And guinea pigs! | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
-Claire, look at this, though, in front. -Aw! | 0:16:35 | 0:16:39
SHE GASPS Look! | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
-Wow! -Girls, look this side. -Look, sheep! | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
Oh, and hens! | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
-We'll be able to have a horse. -Well, I don't know about a horse. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
-You can have a few old nags. -A few old nags! I love it. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
-It's lovely. -It's very nice. Very impressive. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
-I could actually see us living here, to be honest. -Big garage. -Yeah. | 0:16:56 | 0:17:01
Cos I'd need a big lawnmower. Let's go and have a look inside now. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
See if it's as good inside as outside. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
See if it holds the promise that the outside holds. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
Wipe your feet. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
Ooh! | 0:17:15 | 0:17:16 | |
-Oh, the music room. -Yeah. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
Wow. Office, really, isn't it? | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
Yeah, that's very nice as well. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
That's a perfect start. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
So, have the Richards arrived at their dream home? | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
Ooh, I like it. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
-Oh, yes. -Ooh! | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
-Oh, yes. -Wow. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
-I want to live here. -Do you? | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
Do you want to move, pack your bags and come and move in? | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
This house has left everyone speechless. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
And the tour has hardly even begun. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
I can see myself definitely coming back here of an evening, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
when the sun's shining. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
-Because the kids can be well away, can't they, Claire? -Yeah. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
-Doing their thing. -And feel as though the kids will be safe. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:58
It's lovely. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:00
That's exactly the response Claire was hoping for. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
And after two failures, | 0:18:04 | 0:18:05
this house looks to be just what the family was dreaming of. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:09
-This must be the master bedroom, I'd say. -This is... | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
Look at that for a view out as well. Very nice. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
SHE GASPS | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
-Walk-through wardrobe. -It's a walk-in wardrobe! -Yes. -Yeah. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
Shoes all there, yeah. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
-I can't fault it at the moment, there's no negatives, is there? -No. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:31
Should we go and see what else there is? | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
Let's just stay here a little bit. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
Yeah, but there might be other rooms. Bigger rooms. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
Yeah, come on then. Let's go and have a look. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
Oh, it's another bedroom. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:45
-That's all right. For one of the girls. -Nice size again. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:51
Could quite easily move in tomorrow. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
Another decent size bedroom. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:56
-This is the third bedroom. This is a good size as well. -Very impressed. | 0:18:56 | 0:19:01
-We better go. -Got to stop saying very impressed. -Yeah. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
Every word is impressed. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
I can't wait to find out the price on this! | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
This house has impressed on all fronts, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
with its stylish, open-plan design. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
It has plenty of room for everyone indoors and out. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
It's everything the Richards wanted to find in a Kiwi home, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
but can they afford it on their £245,000 budget? | 0:19:23 | 0:19:28
It's definitely over 600 for me, with all that in mind. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:33
-So what are you saying? -625. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
625. I'm going to go higher. 775. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
-That's another 150,000 more than me. -Yes. -OK. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
We ought to have a little money wager. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
-775. -625. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
720, 720, dollars. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
I think I'm closest. 720... | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
-Well, I'm almost 100 out. -720,000. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
Which is £347,000. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
But that is a lot of money and it's out of our budget currently. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:11
But... | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
If you compared that to back home. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
What, £347,000, Claire? | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
We haven't got. Well, you don't know. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
You don't know cos you don't know what your... | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
-job prospects might be. -It's impressive. It's... | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
-Food for thought. -Yeah. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
And the Richards have had plenty of it today. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
The first house was big on views but not on bedrooms. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
The second property's postcode may have been right, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
but the price certainly wasn't. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
And the final stop was a genuine Kiwi dream house, | 0:20:45 | 0:20:49
flooring even Paul despite its heavyweight price tag. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
But has property in Auckland done enough to convince the Richards | 0:20:54 | 0:20:58
that New Zealand could offer them a home? | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
Based on the properties that we've seen today, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
our vote is going to go to... | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
..UK! | 0:21:16 | 0:21:17 | |
New Zealand! | 0:21:17 | 0:21:18
Lis, why have you made that decision? | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
Well, I liked the houses in New Zealand, but... | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
..I just think that I prefer the ones in England. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
Right, why have you said that, then? | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
Based on what you've seen, why have you said that? | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
Based on just the three properties we've seen today, | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
I can't say they are better than the ones we get in the UK. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
Their day house hunting was a real eye-opener for the Richards. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
And Paul and Elisa's vote showed Claire she still has a long way to go to win them over. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:56
Which makes it vital that Auckland can offer Paul his dream job. | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
In the UK, Paul is an IT project manager. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
It's a career he loves and can see a future in, at least at home. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
I would like to have the same opportunities that I have here | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
to advance that career even further. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
I think if those opportunities weren't available for me, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
then, on a personal basis, I just don't think the move | 0:22:17 | 0:22:22
would be a thing for me. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
But there is one thing New Zealand could tempt him with - | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
a better work/life balance. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
I am personally missing out on that, the children are missing out | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
on me being around. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:34
I get to see them for about a half-hour to an hour | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
at the end of their day before they go to bed. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
This move could all hinge on what New Zealand's job market | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
might have to offer Paul. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
So, he's heading into the city to meet Jonathan Maltby, | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
a local IT recruitment expert. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
You've seen my CV. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
What do you think the outlook could be like for me? | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
I'll give you a good snapshot of what's going on. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
The companies that we tend to deal with... | 0:23:01 | 0:23:04
relate more to the people who have come from a technical background, | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
they've been a developer, gone through the ranks | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
-and they've become a project manager. -That is very good news for me | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
because that's the kind of background I currently come from. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:16
I have left the extreme technical development aspects, | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
and moved to that exact area that you're talking about. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
It's a great start. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
Being able to fit into a role he already knows would be ideal. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
Meanwhile, a few miles away, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
Claire and the girls also head off to try something familiar. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
-Claire. -Claire. Hi, Claire. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
Claire and the older girls have ridden before, | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
but today is Frankie's first time. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
It's a special treat for everyone. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
I am going to put you on the biggest horse, the best horse we've got. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:47
-Hold the saddle and pull yourself up. -That's the girl. -That's it. OK. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
Enjoying the outdoors together is one of the big reasons | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
Claire is so keen on moving down under. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
But for Paul, there's an important question. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
Could a career in New Zealand offer him the time to join them? | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
What is the normal working hours that people tend to work? | 0:24:07 | 0:24:12
In New Zealand we have quite a not necessarily laid-back, | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
but very much an easy-going sort of culture. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:17
Knock-off time is usually about five. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
In the summertime people tend to leave in the evenings, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
probably 4.30-5, maybe 5.30-6, because we have daylight saving | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
and it gets dark at about 8.30-9, | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
people can head down to the beach with their families right after work | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
and that is a really good atmosphere to be in. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
That all sounds very good. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
That's exactly what I'm trying to get through for the family. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
That's just what Paul had been hoping for. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
So, is life in New Zealand starting to look more appealing? | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
Across town, I think the answer is a definite yes. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:50
We haven't ridden for quite a long time | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
and it was just the best experience I think I've had an absolutely ages. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:57
It was just lovely. | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
It was the best horse riding I've ever done, really. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
Well, at the start I was a bit nervous | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
and at the end I was happy. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
It was probably the best horse I'd ever been on. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
It was just amazing. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:16
Just sniffing now because of my allergy to horses, but it was... | 0:25:16 | 0:25:21
I'd do it again ten times over, it was that lovely, that good. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:25
Seeing his family happy and being able to share it | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
would be priceless for Paul. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
But would that change in work/life balance mean taking a cut in salary? | 0:25:30 | 0:25:34
What kind of packages do you think would be on offer for myself? | 0:25:34 | 0:25:38
For someone in a team lead sort of role, | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
you're looking at about anywhere between, say, 90 to 110. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:44
In some cases pushing a little bit higher. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
But that all depends on the structure and the size of the company as well. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:51
The figures are comparable to what he earns in the UK. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:55
So has Paul heard enough to convince in New Zealand could offer him | 0:25:55 | 0:25:58
a career worth leaving home for? | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
Given the discussion I've had today about work opportunities | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
in New Zealand and relevant packages, my vote goes to... | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
..New Zealand. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:15
I managed to find out that there appears to be an awful lot | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
of opportunities available. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:23
But I think one of the clinchers is the fact of the laid-back | 0:26:23 | 0:26:28
attitude too, there's much more of a focus on getting the job done | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
but the family aspect is also important as well. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
Let's just say I think it's one more step closer to | 0:26:34 | 0:26:39
the possibility of moving to Auckland. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
I think that's a cautious but happy Paul. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
And back at the house, | 0:26:44 | 0:26:45
the girls have a request after their day out. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
So now we want a horse. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
-Do you? -So can you buy us one? | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
How do you feel about moving to New Zealand now then, Paul? | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
Well, today has put one step in the, let's just say, | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
-right direction. -Right direction. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:02
It's a matter of just finding that right job now. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
Yay! That's good news then, girls. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
But there are obviously other risks, other factors, which are... | 0:27:09 | 0:27:13
-Which come into play. -Yeah. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
Paul is playing his cards close to his chest, | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
but that vote for New Zealand is a big step in the right direction | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
for Claire. But with houses looking pricey | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
and the girls keen on a new family member, | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
it's crucial that the Richards find out if this move | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
is affordable or not. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
Selling their four-bedroom house in Penkridge is vital to raising | 0:27:39 | 0:27:43
the funds they need to emigrate. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:45
Paul and Claire believe it's worth around £245,000. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:49
We've asked two local estate agents to give us their opinions. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:53
Lovely feature fireplace. Stands out well. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
And the French doors going into the dining room. | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
Lovely. Nice contemporary kitchen, nice double oven there. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:07
Lovely extra room, conservatories. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
Nice family, they've got it set up as a dining room, which is perfect. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:14
-Very good, nicely decorated lounge. -Oh, thank you. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:21
Colour scheme is very good, very popular today. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:24
Very modern, up-to-date kitchen. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:28
The people who live here have utilised the garage that was. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
I'm all in favour of that. | 0:28:31 | 0:28:33
There you go, selling point. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:35
Lovely, airy room. Perfect family home. People like this. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
I like this man. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:39
He can come again. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:42
Looks like these people are supporters of the second best team. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:46
Not all of us! Not all of us! | 0:28:46 | 0:28:48
After Wolverhampton Wanderers. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:50
Lovely bright room, just needs de-cluttering slightly. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
-I thought Lisa's room was nice. -I totally agree. Totally agree. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:59
So I'd place the property on the market currently | 0:28:59 | 0:29:02
at about 270,000. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
With a view to getting round about 260, 265,000. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:10
Overall impressions of the property, very sought-for location, | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
four bedrooms, very central to Stafford as well as Cannock. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:19
Value, I'd say around 249,950. | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
For a quicker sale, between 230 to 240. | 0:29:22 | 0:29:25
Even though they're both quite different figures, | 0:29:27 | 0:29:30
we know that slap in the middle of those is probably | 0:29:30 | 0:29:34
what we would want for it | 0:29:34 | 0:29:36
and expect to get for it, or wouldn't sell it for any less anyway. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
Our house looks good there, on camera. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
And you're quite happy with the way it's been portrayed, | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
cos that's the way it is. So realistically... | 0:29:44 | 0:29:46
Is that what you think? | 0:29:46 | 0:29:48
In my head, that's kind of said, "We have got a really nice house, | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
"why would we want to be giving it up?" | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
You'd have to de-clutter certain rooms | 0:29:53 | 0:29:55
and take the professionals' advice. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:57
Which I've been saying for quite some time. | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
Yeah, but I think, in regards to the cluttering, | 0:29:59 | 0:30:03
I think that's cos, as a family, we've outgrown that house. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
Well, at least they agree it's a fair valuation. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
And, if they could get a good price, they'd have a budget of | 0:30:11 | 0:30:15
between £180,000 and £245,000, | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
depending on whether they took on a mortgage. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
But what about their weekly cost of living in New Zealand? | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
Yorkshire puddings. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:26
A pound in the UK, are £2.64 here, | 0:30:26 | 0:30:29
and the kids love Yorkshire puddings. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
-I'll have to make my own. -Have you put those in? -I've put those in. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
Toilet roll, £3.34 and we get through tons of that. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:39
We'll have to use newspaper. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:41
THEY LAUGH | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
With the weekly shop going up by more than £30, it looks as if | 0:30:43 | 0:30:47
living in New Zealand could be a painful experience, in lots of ways. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:52
That's... I mean... | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
It is a bit of an eye-opener, actually. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:56
Because Paul's New Zealand salary would be almost equal to his UK earnings, | 0:30:56 | 0:31:00
they've opted to base their mortgage calculations | 0:31:00 | 0:31:03
on a mid price property. | 0:31:03 | 0:31:05
-Yeah. -Mortgage repayments. Yeah? | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
850, here in the UK | 0:31:10 | 0:31:14
and in New Zealand it would be 668. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
Paul's spotted a problem. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:19
OK, so even though the figures are cheaper there at 668, | 0:31:21 | 0:31:26
and it's 880, right... | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
-You're paying it for longer. -..it doesn't really reflect... | 0:31:28 | 0:31:32
No, because you pay it for a longer period. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
Yeah? So we're paying 850 over the next six years, | 0:31:34 | 0:31:36
whereas we'd be paying 668 over 20 years, | 0:31:36 | 0:31:40
which defeats one of the objects | 0:31:40 | 0:31:42
we've tried to do with the mortgage. Anyway... | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
The figures don't look promising, so what's the bottom line? | 0:31:46 | 0:31:50
It looks here that we'll be £200 a month better off in the UK | 0:31:50 | 0:31:53
than what we would in New Zealand. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:55
-For me now, knowing all of this... -There's a lot to weigh up. | 0:31:57 | 0:32:01
Yeah, there is still an awful lot to weigh up. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:03
We could afford to live here, OK, | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
but it would mean us taking on a larger mortgage in terms of... | 0:32:06 | 0:32:11
than what we've currently got, but also the term of that mortgage | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
and is that something we really want to be doing? | 0:32:15 | 0:32:17
-It's something to consider. -It is something to consider, | 0:32:19 | 0:32:21
but it is... | 0:32:21 | 0:32:22
..from what I've experienced so far, that is the number one factor. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
-Which was the job. It's now changed to this, hasn't it? -Yes. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:31
It looks like emigrating could be affordable, | 0:32:31 | 0:32:33
but only if the Richards are willing to dig deep. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
So how will they vote? | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
OK, so based on the cost of living out here in New Zealand, | 0:32:38 | 0:32:43
our vote goes to... | 0:32:43 | 0:32:45
-The UK. -The UK. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:54
I think, even though we've said the UK, based on those figures, | 0:32:59 | 0:33:03
-I think we still need to evaluate... -The whole lifestyle. | 0:33:03 | 0:33:06
The whole way of living over here and ultimately what you want, I think. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:09
-You took the words right out of my mouth. -There you go. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:12
That's cos we're peas in a pod. That's cos we evenly matched. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:16
-No, but I think you've got to weigh everything up, haven't you? -We have. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:20
And, if your lifestyle is going to exceed everything else, | 0:33:20 | 0:33:24
then that's ultimately what you go for. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
-But cost of living-wise, it's definitely living in the UK. -Yes. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:31
Seeing the figures laid out in front of them | 0:33:36 | 0:33:39
put the brakes on even Claire's enthusiasm to emigrate, | 0:33:39 | 0:33:42
but could those high prices be worth paying? | 0:33:42 | 0:33:45
For Claire, it's the possibility of living a better lifestyle | 0:33:45 | 0:33:49
and being close to her family that's always been behind this dream. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:53
The Richards are visiting Auckland | 0:33:53 | 0:33:56
at the start of the Kiwi winter. | 0:33:56 | 0:33:57
With average winter temperatures of around 14 degrees, | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
living and outdoor lifestyle is a year-long prospect. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:04
For Claire, this chance to spend time together is priceless. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:09
It's for me, as well, it's for Paul, | 0:34:10 | 0:34:12
but it's for them, it's for their futures. | 0:34:12 | 0:34:14
I think maybe they'll keep their childhood for longer, | 0:34:14 | 0:34:16
staying here, rather than... | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
the sort of things you might see happening in the UK. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:21
And Paul can also see how much living down under | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
could offer the family. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:28
We very rarely get to do anything of an evening. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:31
You know, by the time I get home from work, | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
Claire's already had a few hours with the children, | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
predominantly stuck inside or at clubs, you know? | 0:34:36 | 0:34:40
Given the fact that we can be outside | 0:34:41 | 0:34:43
till later on in an evening, | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
for the vast majority of the time | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
throughout the year, | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
it's a very, very, very big positive. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:52
With so many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
the Richards' lifestyle could change for ever, if they make the move. | 0:34:56 | 0:35:01
It seems a very safe environment out here for the children. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
They can safely play out on the beaches, whereas back home | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
we'd potentially be, "Where are they?" | 0:35:07 | 0:35:10
You know, they couldn't be able to run free. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
You know, exercising all the time, running up and down on the beach, | 0:35:12 | 0:35:15
again, is another positive. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
So it's all positives at the moment. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
With the final vote only a couple of days away, | 0:35:19 | 0:35:22
meeting up with Claire's brother and family is a welcome break | 0:35:22 | 0:35:25
from the strain of such a big decision. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:28
Making new friends may take time, but being back together has | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
reminded Claire of what inspired her dream in the first place. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:35
All that I've seen and we've done so far | 0:35:35 | 0:35:37
and seeing how the children are, | 0:35:37 | 0:35:40
it does bring it home to me how important it is. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:44
I'm hoping that what he sees here and what he's done here, | 0:35:44 | 0:35:47
I'm hoping that he thinks, "Yeah, it is better." | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
For Claire, New Zealand would mean being close to people | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
and a lifestyle she loves, but have Paul and the girls | 0:35:54 | 0:35:58
been convinced that Kiwi living is for them, too? | 0:35:58 | 0:36:01
Based on the lifestyle here in New Zealand, our vote goes to... | 0:36:02 | 0:36:07
-ALL: New Zealand! -New Zealand. | 0:36:13 | 0:36:16
So far, there's been nothing to fault | 0:36:19 | 0:36:21
anything to do with the lifestyle. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:23
The beaches, the scenery, the climate, the outdoor living, | 0:36:23 | 0:36:27
everything is superb. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:28
That's quite a turnaround from Paul | 0:36:31 | 0:36:33
and great news for Claire. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:35
And, to top things off, | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
a family barbecue is a fitting end to the day. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:40
-Do you want a go? -No, it's November, Rob. You can't do this in November. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:48
It's not only the seasons that are confused down under. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:51
After not seeing each other for three years, some of the family | 0:36:51 | 0:36:55
need a little more time to put faces and names together again. | 0:36:55 | 0:36:58
Grandma! | 0:36:58 | 0:37:00
LAUGHTER | 0:37:00 | 0:37:01
Thanks, Ben. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:03
I don't know why he's calling me grandma, | 0:37:03 | 0:37:04
unless I look like my mother. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:06
And while the girls catch up on Kiwi fashions, | 0:37:06 | 0:37:08
Mum and Dad can drink to old friends. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
-Ready? -Cheers. -Cheers. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:13
Good to see you, good to have you here. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:15
The Kiwi lifestyle was a big success with the Richards | 0:37:20 | 0:37:24
and seeing familiar faces | 0:37:24 | 0:37:25
would make emigrating a lot easier to handle, | 0:37:25 | 0:37:28
but being reunited with family in New Zealand won't come | 0:37:28 | 0:37:31
without the pain of leaving others behind at home. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
Right, do you think we're OK to let the children watch it? | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
-Let's ask them. Do you want to see what people have got to say? -Yeah. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
-Yeah? -Yeah. -Yeah? OK. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
Hello, Paul. Hello, Claire. | 0:37:48 | 0:37:50
'Hello, girls. Woo!' | 0:37:50 | 0:37:52
Hi, Paul, | 0:37:52 | 0:37:54
Claire and girls. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:56
Hi, Claire, Paul and the Penkridge three. | 0:37:56 | 0:37:59
I've worried about Claire from | 0:37:59 | 0:38:01
the day she was born and I | 0:38:01 | 0:38:03
never, ever, you know, | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
go very long without thinking about her, | 0:38:05 | 0:38:08
some time or other. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:09
I think the lifestyle, for them, is good there, | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
cos that's the way they are. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:14
I think it will be the best thing ever for them, | 0:38:15 | 0:38:19
but I'll be gutted. | 0:38:19 | 0:38:20
I don't want them to go. | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
Well, I'll just be brokenhearted. | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
Yeah, we've got two children, | 0:38:26 | 0:38:27
then we wouldn't have any children, would we? | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
If they feel that they can | 0:38:30 | 0:38:32
move to New Zealand and better themselves | 0:38:32 | 0:38:34
more than what they have done, well, | 0:38:34 | 0:38:37
we can't say anything against you. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:41
We'll support them, but I don't want them to go, obviously. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:45
I'm going to miss the girls hugely. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:47
They're... It's been an honour | 0:38:47 | 0:38:50
being their godfather, | 0:38:50 | 0:38:54
and watching them growing up over the last 12 years. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:57
It's going to be like losing part of the family, you know? | 0:38:57 | 0:39:00
It's going to be hard. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:04
It's being selfish, I know, | 0:39:04 | 0:39:05
to say that we don't want you to go, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
but we don't really. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:10
But whatever you decide, we'll back you up. | 0:39:10 | 0:39:13
You know, somewhere down inside I just... | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
I can't think about that one. | 0:39:21 | 0:39:24
We just wish you well. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
And... | 0:39:28 | 0:39:29
buy a big house so we can | 0:39:29 | 0:39:31
come and stay with you. | 0:39:31 | 0:39:33
So what do you think of that, then? | 0:39:34 | 0:39:36
Well... | 0:39:36 | 0:39:37
-You look like you're a bit touched by it all. -Yeah, I was. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:43
What about you, Elise? What do you think? | 0:39:43 | 0:39:46
I'm going to be sad. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:48
What? Cos you wouldn't see them so often? | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51
Right. And what about you, Paul? | 0:39:52 | 0:39:55
Yeah, I didn't think it would | 0:39:55 | 0:39:57
pull at my heartstrings so much, to be honest. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
One of my reasons why I don't really want to come out here | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
was cos of family and friends. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
-But we've got cousins here. -I know we've got family here, | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
but we haven't got all the family | 0:40:09 | 0:40:11
out here, have we? | 0:40:11 | 0:40:12
And it's not just family, | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
it's friends, as well. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:15
Watching messages reminded the family just how much | 0:40:19 | 0:40:23
they'd have to give up for a new start down under. | 0:40:23 | 0:40:26
But, having fallen for the lifestyle, | 0:40:26 | 0:40:28
they know the rewards that could be on offer, too. | 0:40:28 | 0:40:31
So, how will the Richards make their final decision? | 0:40:31 | 0:40:35
Had an absolutely brilliant time, all round. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:43
Everything that we've done, everything we've experienced | 0:40:43 | 0:40:45
has just been above and beyond | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
what I expected, I think, really. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:49
Thinking about it properly, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:53
I am honestly, honestly | 0:40:53 | 0:40:55
undecided on what to do at this moment in time. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
I don't know how I'm going to make the decision. | 0:40:58 | 0:41:00
I am really anxious about the way... what Paul's decision will be. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:04
I think, for him, in fairness to him, | 0:41:04 | 0:41:06
whatever decision he makes won't be... | 0:41:06 | 0:41:08
Well, it's not going to be, for either of us, an easy decision. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:11
My heart is kind of saying, you know, | 0:41:11 | 0:41:14
I really should be coming out here, | 0:41:14 | 0:41:16
because it is fantastic. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:17
But, you know, decisions like this, you really shouldn't... | 0:41:17 | 0:41:20
my personal view is you should be making with your head. | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
You know, weighing up absolutely every option. | 0:41:23 | 0:41:25
If he turns around and says it's an absolute, definite no, | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
I think I'll be... well, be gutted, I suppose. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:33
It would make me sad, but you know... definitely. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:37
It's been a week to remember for the Richards, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
but, at the end of it, will heads rule hearts, | 0:41:40 | 0:41:42
or will the promise of a new life make Claire's dream come true? | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
Based on our week here in New Zealand, | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
our final vote goes to... | 0:41:50 | 0:41:51
-The UK. -New Zealand. -New Zealand. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:04
Elise, why have you voted for the UK? | 0:42:05 | 0:42:08
I really like New Zealand, but I'd just miss my family. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:12
I mean, it would be nice | 0:42:12 | 0:42:13
if we could all live in New Zealand. | 0:42:13 | 0:42:17
I voted for similar reasons as Elise, and based on the fact | 0:42:19 | 0:42:21
on the friends and family that we'll be leaving behind, | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
I think it's too much. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:25
So, have you dismissed it now, or are you going to consider? | 0:42:25 | 0:42:29
No, I haven't dismissed it as an option. | 0:42:29 | 0:42:31
It's given me a lot more information as to what | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
we need to take into consideration. | 0:42:34 | 0:42:36
It's something that we need to take away and look and review. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:40
Choosing the right future for your family is never easy | 0:42:47 | 0:42:51
and it looks like this is one conversation | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
that still has some distance to run. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
But, wherever their journey takes them, | 0:42:55 | 0:42:57
we wish the Richards all the very best. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
