If you believed a better life was waiting for you in another country,

0:00:020:00:05

would you be willing to gamble everything to find it?

0:00:050:00:08

Especially if your family didn't share your dream.

0:00:080:00:12

Tracy Evans has become obsessed with emigrating...

0:00:120:00:16

It's got to the point where I can't even focus on life in this country any more,

0:00:160:00:20

because I don't want to even be in this country any more.

0:00:200:00:22

..but it's pushing her family to the brink.

0:00:220:00:24

All you go on about, all she goes on about, every day, and it does drive me mad.

0:00:240:00:29

It's such a big risk to move to Australia,

0:00:290:00:31

and I'm not sure if I really want to take the risk.

0:00:310:00:33

..and it could lead to heartache.

0:00:330:00:36

I hope you have just one last

0:00:360:00:37

thought about going to Australia.

0:00:370:00:41

I hope you change your mind.

0:00:410:00:43

Every year, over 35,000 of us emigrate to Australia.

0:01:050:01:08

As a country renowned for its beautiful landscapes,

0:01:080:01:11

golden beaches and relaxed lifestyle, it's easy to see why.

0:01:110:01:16

However, leaving behind everything you know can be a lot harder

0:01:160:01:19

than people expect, and nearly a third end up returning home.

0:01:190:01:23

Ahead of the Evans family is a week exploring

0:01:260:01:29

the reality of living in Australia.

0:01:290:01:32

At the end of it they will have to make one of the hardest decisions

0:01:320:01:35

of their lives, whether to stay in the UK, or to move down under.

0:01:350:01:39

After 10,000 miles, and 24 hours in the air,

0:01:420:01:45

the Evans finally get their feet onto Australian soil.

0:01:450:01:48

They might have all been on the same plane,

0:01:500:01:53

but it seems they had very different journeys.

0:01:530:01:55

It was a great flight, it was fine, no worries with the flight.

0:01:570:02:01

I'm very happy - ecstatic.

0:02:010:02:03

Knackering, really. A hard thing to do.

0:02:030:02:06

Sitting on there for 24 hours is not going to happen once or twice

0:02:060:02:09

a year, it would have to be first-class.

0:02:090:02:12

Well, opinion may be divided about the journey,

0:02:140:02:16

but I'm sure they all agree that Perth is a long way from home.

0:02:160:02:20

Back in the UK, the Evans live in leafy Virginia Water in Surrey.

0:02:250:02:29

They are mum Tracy, dad Paul, 16-year-old Liam, Ryan aged 14,

0:02:290:02:36

Keira who is six, and little Aaron who's four.

0:02:360:02:39

Tracy works as a nurse, and Paul is a building labourer.

0:02:440:02:48

With young children to look after, both of them

0:02:480:02:51

can only work part-time, making finances a constant problem.

0:02:510:02:55

Life is really hard in the UK, for all of us at the moment.

0:02:550:02:59

We struggle, life is a struggle, everyday life is a struggle.

0:02:590:03:02

This is a hospital house, erm,

0:03:020:03:05

so it will never be ours,

0:03:050:03:07

but the rent goes up every year, the council tax goes up,

0:03:070:03:10

gas and electricity goes up, wages don't match everything else,

0:03:100:03:15

and you are just literally scrimping and scraping.

0:03:150:03:18

The main point is, financially, where we are living in the UK,

0:03:180:03:22

it's obviously expensive where we are living here, yeah,

0:03:220:03:26

and I think everything is going up here all the time.

0:03:260:03:29

We're always arguing about money, aren't we?

0:03:290:03:31

Silly things, like if you want to go out for a drink

0:03:310:03:34

with your mates, I will be saying, "How much are you taking?

0:03:340:03:36

"Are you taking £20 out of the pot,

0:03:360:03:38

"because that is £20 out of our food money?" or something.

0:03:380:03:41

He should be able to go out with his mates for a drink,

0:03:410:03:43

so it's not the way to live, really.

0:03:430:03:48

After years of struggling,

0:03:520:03:54

Tracy is convinced that Australia is the answer to their problems.

0:03:540:03:58

Australia, for me, has got to the point where it just

0:03:580:04:02

consumes me, it's just all I think about every day,

0:04:020:04:05

and if I could just pack up and go tomorrow, I would just go.

0:04:050:04:09

It's got to the point where I can't even focus on life in this country

0:04:090:04:12

any more, because I don't want to be in this country any more, so, I just...

0:04:120:04:17

It's all you go on about, she goes on about it every day,

0:04:170:04:20

and it does drive me mad.

0:04:200:04:22

Having to think about the needs of children, aged from 4 to 16,

0:04:240:04:28

Tracy can see no other way to give them a better future.

0:04:280:04:32

I think it's sad that you have to go halfway around the world to try

0:04:320:04:35

and give your kids a better life, and I think,

0:04:350:04:38

Australia as a country, and as a lifestyle, has more to

0:04:380:04:41

offer our type of family, than this country ever can at the moment.

0:04:410:04:47

If the kids are going to have a better life...

0:04:470:04:51

more options for their future,

0:04:510:04:53

then that is a massive thing for me, that would be the main thing.

0:04:530:04:58

And it is not just about lifestyle - it is

0:04:580:05:00

also about Aaron's health.

0:05:000:05:02

Although he'll be staying in the UK with his grandparents

0:05:020:05:05

during the trial week, the dry Australian weather could really benefit him.

0:05:050:05:09

He was born with a congenital lung abnormality.

0:05:090:05:12

You always worry when the weather is not too good,

0:05:120:05:15

so obviously the weather out there is a driving factor for Aaron.

0:05:150:05:19

However, not all the children can see the upsides of emigrating.

0:05:190:05:24

I feel a bit nervous and scared,

0:05:240:05:26

because if we do move out there I'll have to start everything fresh.

0:05:260:05:30

I'll have no friends, hardly any family,

0:05:300:05:32

just us that's moved out there,

0:05:320:05:35

and I don't know what to do out there, so...

0:05:350:05:38

When mum gathered us round the table to write all the good

0:05:390:05:42

things and the bad things about Australia, I listed as many

0:05:420:05:45

negative things as I could, because that's all that came into my head.

0:05:450:05:49

It's such a big risk to move to Australia,

0:05:490:05:50

and I'm not sure if I really want to take the risk.

0:05:500:05:53

And it's not just Liam who's filled with doubts.

0:05:530:05:56

Paul knows what he stands to lose.

0:05:560:05:59

One of the main reasons...

0:05:590:06:01

I wouldn't go is for family and friends,

0:06:010:06:04

you know, I am close to my brother, my sister, mum and dad.

0:06:040:06:09

Whereas now I can go and see them, whenever I want, when I'm out

0:06:100:06:14

there, I won't have them there to fall back on, you know.

0:06:140:06:17

The pressure on me I think is massive,

0:06:190:06:21

I do have a lot of sleepless nights,

0:06:210:06:25

I constantly think about it,

0:06:250:06:26

whether I'm at work, or at home,

0:06:260:06:29

it just always plays on my mind,

0:06:290:06:31

because I still don't know what to do.

0:06:310:06:34

As an only child,

0:06:360:06:37

Tracy can't bear to contemplate the heartache involved in emigrating.

0:06:370:06:41

I do have moments when I stop and think

0:06:410:06:44

about the impact it will have on my mum,

0:06:440:06:48

obviously she will be absolutely devastated, erm...

0:06:480:06:52

but I can't dwell on it too long,

0:06:520:06:55

I can't allow myself to think of the impact that it will have, really.

0:06:550:07:01

Rightly or wrongly, I just have to put blinkers on, because I know if I

0:07:010:07:04

dwell on it too much, I would probably never even pack my bags.

0:07:040:07:10

With only one week to make the biggest decision of their lives,

0:07:120:07:15

their entire future could be at stake.

0:07:150:07:18

I want much more from life, I want more than just waking up

0:07:180:07:22

and working out the figures, and plodding through another day,

0:07:220:07:25

and thinking, "God, is this it?"

0:07:250:07:27

There's got to be more than this.

0:07:270:07:30

If I come back and say, "That's it, I'm not going,"

0:07:310:07:34

if I made that decision, I'm not sure where it would leave us,

0:07:340:07:38

really, if I'm honest, because I think she would resent me.

0:07:380:07:42

The Evans are in an agonising position.

0:07:500:07:52

Tracy is convinced that Australia can offer the life they desperately

0:07:520:07:56

seek, but Paul knows just how much they stand to lose by leaving.

0:07:560:08:01

So, could the grass really be greener so far from home?

0:08:010:08:05

The Evans will be spending those seven days in Perth.

0:08:050:08:08

Spread along the coast of Western Australia, it's a busy city,

0:08:080:08:11

with a booming economy, and plenty of outdoor spaces.

0:08:110:08:14

However, it does mean that property costs have also been going up

0:08:140:08:18

faster than most of Australia.

0:08:180:08:20

Could the Evans struggle to afford a house big

0:08:200:08:22

enough for a family of six?

0:08:220:08:24

Home for the week is this three- bedroom

0:08:240:08:26

property in the Carlisle area.

0:08:260:08:28

In we come.

0:08:310:08:32

-Oh!

-Oh, this is lovely.

0:08:340:08:37

That's not bad, actually, is it.

0:08:370:08:38

Oh, it's got an en-suite, look at that!

0:08:380:08:40

Well, it's definitely made a good first impression on everyone.

0:08:400:08:44

Oh, look, Keira!

0:08:440:08:46

Oh, it's beautiful!

0:08:470:08:49

Look at that telly!

0:08:490:08:51

It's all right, isn't it?

0:08:510:08:53

This is nice.

0:08:530:08:56

That's lovely.

0:08:560:08:57

Oh, look, Keira.

0:08:570:09:00

It is nice, yeah.

0:09:000:09:01

Oh, that's fab!

0:09:030:09:04

So, there you go.

0:09:040:09:06

This cushion's got hair!

0:09:060:09:07

Yes, it's got hair!

0:09:070:09:09

SHE LAUGHS

0:09:090:09:10

Unfortunately, the outside space is far from ideal.

0:09:100:09:14

It's not much.

0:09:140:09:16

There's no space, really, is there?

0:09:160:09:18

I wanted a swimming pool.

0:09:180:09:21

It hasn't got a swimming pool, darling, has it?

0:09:210:09:25

And once the family have had a chance to settle in,

0:09:290:09:31

everyone seems to be changing their tune.

0:09:310:09:34

It's not really what I expected, at all.

0:09:340:09:37

Bit disappointed in the house, but, you know...

0:09:370:09:39

You've got to prove this week and show that you could live here.

0:09:390:09:42

Yeah...

0:09:420:09:43

so far, its UK one, Australia nil.

0:09:430:09:47

This is not a good start for Tracy's dream, and Paul is

0:09:500:09:53

already concerned about whether they could even afford to make the move.

0:09:530:09:57

If it doesn't work out financially, then obviously, we will not be able to do it,

0:09:570:10:00

there's no point in coming to the other side of the world

0:10:000:10:03

when we're going to be in the same position where we are now.

0:10:030:10:06

Back in the UK, the Evans live in this detached

0:10:110:10:13

house in Virginia Water, near Woking.

0:10:130:10:16

It's a spacious, five-bedroom property that they

0:10:160:10:18

rent from Tracy's hospital for £1,200 a month.

0:10:180:10:22

This house has plenty of space for all the family.

0:10:240:10:27

They would be looking for a similar sized property to rent in Australia.

0:10:280:10:32

And there are a couple of features that would make

0:10:330:10:35

the idea of emigrating a little more appealing.

0:10:350:10:38

I love the style of Australian houses, that they're all kind of on one level, big and open planned.

0:10:380:10:43

We just want space, really.

0:10:430:10:45

A barbecue area, a pool would be absolutely fantastic,

0:10:450:10:48

of course it would, but it's got to be near schools, near shops, so...

0:10:480:10:52

Today will give the Evans a taste of Perth's rental market.

0:10:550:10:59

We will show them the three options based on what

0:10:590:11:01

they want from their ideal home, and what they can afford.

0:11:010:11:05

After seeing for themselves what's on offer,

0:11:050:11:07

they'll find out the cost of each of the houses.

0:11:070:11:10

The first house is in Yanchep, north of Perth.

0:11:110:11:14

It's a modern area, popular with young families,

0:11:140:11:17

but being over 20 miles from the main hospital,

0:11:170:11:20

it would mean a long commute for Tracy.

0:11:200:11:22

This three-bed property is a typical, modern,

0:11:230:11:26

Aussie style house, but will it suit the Evans?

0:11:260:11:29

This is really nice.

0:11:310:11:33

That does look all right out there.

0:11:350:11:37

Oh, this is nice. Look at that telly, Ryan.

0:11:370:11:41

OK. Living room.

0:11:410:11:43

Oh, wow!

0:11:430:11:44

-This is lovely.

-It's nice.

0:11:450:11:47

It's a really good sized bedroom.

0:11:470:11:50

Lovely en-suite, yeah.

0:11:500:11:52

Let's have a look in here, Keira.

0:11:520:11:55

Oh, wow, yeah, now this is nice.

0:11:550:11:58

-Oh, my God.

-This is nice.

0:11:580:12:00

It's a hit.

0:12:000:12:01

There's plenty of living space,

0:12:010:12:03

and the clean modern lines seem to be to everyone's taste.

0:12:030:12:06

This is proper spacious, isn't it?

0:12:060:12:09

It is nice, this.

0:12:090:12:11

Another sitting area, look.

0:12:110:12:12

Is that nice there?

0:12:120:12:14

Oh, wow, Keira, look, this is fab.

0:12:160:12:18

The bedrooms are a good size, but Tracy has spotted one major fault.

0:12:180:12:23

-Oh, now we have a problem.

-What?

0:12:230:12:25

Well, problem as in...you would have to get two of these in here,

0:12:250:12:30

and he doesn't want to share.

0:12:300:12:33

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:12:330:12:35

Pretty much.

0:12:350:12:36

It wouldn't happen.

0:12:360:12:38

No, it wouldn't happen, because Liam needs his own room.

0:12:380:12:42

It's a nice house, but this room has ruined it.

0:12:420:12:46

If Liam is a bit too old to be sharing a bedroom,

0:12:460:12:49

will they have to stretch their budget to a bigger house?

0:12:490:12:52

Luckily, Paul has spotted a simple solution.

0:12:520:12:55

What about the rumpus room at the front?

0:12:550:12:57

There are two TV rooms, you've got one here, and one at the front.

0:12:570:13:01

Turn that one, that's a big enough room.

0:13:010:13:04

That could be my room.

0:13:040:13:06

And where the open-plan kitchen is, they've got a settee there,

0:13:060:13:09

you could easily get another in there,

0:13:090:13:11

and that's your main living room/ dining room/kitchen.

0:13:110:13:14

And from there that would work.

0:13:140:13:16

I'd have that, I wouldn't mind having any of these bedrooms.

0:13:160:13:19

So, basically, this house is doable.

0:13:190:13:21

OK, sleeping problem solved.

0:13:210:13:24

But what about the small garden?

0:13:240:13:26

You see, I like the fact that it's low-maintenance...

0:13:270:13:31

This house certainly doesn't need an estate agent,

0:13:310:13:34

Tracy's doing a great job selling it.

0:13:340:13:36

-There's no grass...

-Yeah, that's a good thing.

0:13:360:13:38

..because we're not gardeners, and what's that?

0:13:380:13:41

Is that a hot tub, it's just fab.

0:13:410:13:43

We're not overlooked.

0:13:430:13:46

You don't feel as if you're on top of each other.

0:13:460:13:49

Is there a swimming pool?

0:13:490:13:50

You're sitting on it.

0:13:500:13:52

So what's the final verdict?

0:13:540:13:58

-Sold.

-Sold.

0:13:590:14:02

Tracy's sales pitch may have done the trick, but no-one knows the price.

0:14:020:14:06

Could they afford to rent this house on their £1,200 budget?

0:14:060:14:10

Right, are you ready?

0:14:120:14:15

Do it.

0:14:150:14:17

Do you want to have a look?

0:14:170:14:18

I think it's over budget, do it.

0:14:180:14:20

Three, two, one.

0:14:200:14:23

-£970 per month.

-No way!

0:14:230:14:25

-That is well within our budget.

-That is good.

0:14:250:14:28

Wow, I'm well chuffed.

0:14:280:14:29

All within budget -

0:14:290:14:31

actually, under budget, leaves us some money in the pot.

0:14:310:14:35

That's a great start.

0:14:350:14:37

Everyone can see themselves living here,

0:14:370:14:39

and the rent is £300 less than they are paying in the UK.

0:14:390:14:43

Has Tracy achieved her dream already?

0:14:430:14:46

Let's pack!

0:14:460:14:47

Well, I don't know, yet.

0:14:470:14:50

Nice try, Tracy, but I don't think it's going to be that simple.

0:14:500:14:55

Maybe the second house can add more weight to her case.

0:14:550:14:58

It's in the area of Butler, nearer to central Perth, it's also

0:14:580:15:02

closer to beaches, shops and parks, ideal for the Evans household.

0:15:020:15:06

Oh, this is nice, look.

0:15:060:15:09

This four-bedroom house should have enough rooms for the family, but

0:15:090:15:13

Tracy isn't wasting any time she's straight in with a sales pitch.

0:15:130:15:17

Oh, wow!

0:15:170:15:18

Lovely size, you could stick a couple of barstools there,

0:15:180:15:21

and then you got this wall here, which kind of separates it,

0:15:210:15:24

so you've got your living room, living area, open plan, it's lovely.

0:15:240:15:28

Tracy really is determined to convince everyone that it

0:15:280:15:32

could work for them.

0:15:320:15:34

And again it's a great size, the wardrobes are built-in,

0:15:340:15:37

everything you need's in here, bed, that's fine.

0:15:370:15:40

However, not everyone is seeing this house in quite the same light.

0:15:400:15:44

It's a bit cramped compared to the other house we've seen...

0:15:440:15:48

Yeah, for these two, they would want bigger, wouldn't they?

0:15:480:15:52

Keira and Aaron, fine.

0:15:520:15:54

-The size is a bit small, for me anyway.

-OK.

0:15:540:15:57

Come on, then, Keira, let's go and see what else we can see.

0:15:570:16:01

But Tracy isn't deterred. Perhaps the garden can change Liam's mind...

0:16:010:16:06

Oh, this is lovely.

0:16:060:16:08

Oh, that's fab.

0:16:080:16:10

..or make matters worse.

0:16:110:16:13

It a bit small, it's a bit cramped.

0:16:130:16:16

Why do you think it's cramped?

0:16:160:16:19

There's just so much stuff going on at once, it's weird.

0:16:190:16:23

I don't know, it might be the furniture...

0:16:230:16:26

I do agree...

0:16:260:16:27

It feels like it's smaller than the other one.

0:16:270:16:29

-There seems to be more here, but it's all cramped in.

-Yes.

0:16:290:16:35

Despite Tracy's best efforts,

0:16:350:16:37

the rest of the family have not been taken by this house.

0:16:370:16:40

Will the cost be another blow for Tracy's hopes?

0:16:400:16:43

-Time to find out.

-Ready?

0:16:430:16:45

-Three, two...

-You ready?

0:16:450:16:47

..one.

0:16:470:16:48

That's £1,100 a month, only just in budget,

0:16:520:16:56

and Tracy's changed her tack on selling this house.

0:16:560:17:00

I like this area. I really like this area.

0:17:000:17:04

Mum, I'm not being funny,

0:17:040:17:05

you can't pick your house just on the location...

0:17:050:17:09

Ryan, it's location, location, location.

0:17:090:17:13

Tracy has tried every tactic,

0:17:130:17:15

but this house has not won over her family.

0:17:150:17:17

Can the final property turn things around for her?

0:17:170:17:20

Also in the area of Butler, it's a little closer to the beach

0:17:210:17:25

and main shopping area than the last house,

0:17:250:17:27

which could make it more appealing, but also more costly.

0:17:270:17:30

Wow!

0:17:320:17:33

Yeah, I'm not sure if we can afford this one, Keira,

0:17:330:17:35

-it looks beautiful, doesn't it?

-Yeah, this one could be...

0:17:350:17:38

It's a large, detached house with the modern look Paul

0:17:380:17:40

and Tracy want, but most crucially will it be big enough?

0:17:400:17:44

Oh, look! Keira, let's start here.

0:17:470:17:49

-Oh, my God.

-Wow!

0:17:490:17:52

Oh, this is beautiful.

0:17:520:17:54

This is massive.

0:17:540:17:56

Oh, wow, look!

0:17:560:17:58

A walk-in wardrobe each,

0:17:580:18:01

his and hers sinks.

0:18:010:18:02

Well, this would be our room, obviously.

0:18:020:18:04

Oh, my God, look at that shower!

0:18:040:18:06

It's...

0:18:060:18:07

This is stunning.

0:18:070:18:08

It's a great start, but now it's Tracy's turn to be unsure.

0:18:080:18:13

This is got, "You can't afford it," written all over it.

0:18:130:18:16

With four bedrooms, there's enough for a family of six,

0:18:200:18:23

but are they large enough for Liam?

0:18:230:18:25

This would be a perfect size - not to big, not too small, so...

0:18:250:18:31

it's a good house.

0:18:310:18:33

Good. Good!

0:18:330:18:35

-I think it's more than good...

-It's amazing!

0:18:350:18:37

-It's spot on.

-It's 20 out of 10.

0:18:370:18:40

OK.

0:18:420:18:44

Oh my God!

0:18:440:18:46

I'm totally speechless.

0:18:460:18:48

This house is certainly getting top marks,

0:18:520:18:55

and there's one last room that could make it a winner.

0:18:550:18:58

Oh, my life!

0:18:580:19:00

Oh, my God, you've got another room.

0:19:000:19:03

I want to know what that is.

0:19:030:19:04

That's a projector room.

0:19:040:19:06

It looks like the Evans have landed in their dream house,

0:19:060:19:09

however, Paul isn't getting carried away.

0:19:090:19:12

I think it's a house we can only dream of, really.

0:19:120:19:15

Everything is just too good for us.

0:19:160:19:21

Basically, too good for us.

0:19:210:19:23

But Tracy is not giving up her dream that easily.

0:19:230:19:27

I would work every overtime shift that was going if it meant me

0:19:270:19:32

and my family could live in a house like this, totally.

0:19:320:19:36

You've got to admire Tracy's determination to

0:19:360:19:39

give her family a better life in Australia,

0:19:390:19:41

but this is the only house they've all agreed on.

0:19:410:19:44

If it's beyond their budget,

0:19:440:19:46

could it spell the end for Tracy's hopes of emigrating?

0:19:460:19:49

It all depends on the turn of the final card.

0:19:510:19:54

Turn it over, Keira.

0:20:020:20:03

Oh!

0:20:040:20:05

2,100?

0:20:050:20:07

Oh, my God!

0:20:070:20:09

That's £1,350 per month, just over their budget.

0:20:090:20:14

This is £150 more a month than what we've got at home, that's all.

0:20:140:20:19

It's bang on the top end of our budget, so this house is doable,

0:20:190:20:23

it's not a dream house, it's a house we could have when we moved over.

0:20:230:20:29

We have to leave this house.

0:20:290:20:30

So, the dream house could be within their reach,

0:20:300:20:33

if Tracy can find the right job.

0:20:330:20:36

So, have the Evans been won over by Perth properties?

0:20:360:20:40

The first house could accommodate the family

0:20:400:20:42

with some creative use of the rooms.

0:20:420:20:45

The second house was just a bit too small and cramped,

0:20:450:20:48

despite Tracy's best sales talk.

0:20:480:20:51

But the third house, definitely fell into their dream home category,

0:20:510:20:55

and could be affordable.

0:20:550:20:58

So, is the move off to a winning start,

0:20:580:21:01

or will it be a vote to stay at home in the UK?

0:21:010:21:04

Based on the three properties that we've seen today, our vote goes to...

0:21:040:21:08

-ALL:

-Australia!

0:21:120:21:15

Woo hoo!

0:21:150:21:17

Good thing!

0:21:180:21:20

That is just on the properties!

0:21:200:21:23

-Don't get too carried away!

-Yeah, OK, but it's a start.

0:21:230:21:26

After finding an affordable dream house,

0:21:290:21:32

Tracy could hardly have hoped for a better start to the week.

0:21:320:21:36

And if Perth's lifestyle is as attractive to the Evans,

0:21:360:21:38

it would be another big step towards her ultimate goal.

0:21:380:21:41

Back home, there's one thing Paul and the boys can't do without.

0:21:430:21:47

Football is what connects our family together, I mean, we watch it on TV,

0:21:470:21:52

we play it, we go out weekdays, we go and watch it, it's what we do.

0:21:520:21:56

Football is big for me and my brother.

0:21:560:22:01

The boys both said if they can't find a football club out there they don't want to go.

0:22:010:22:05

They feel that strongly about it,

0:22:050:22:06

they have to be able to do their sports and we need to get them into a football club.

0:22:060:22:10

Their lives basically revolve around football.

0:22:100:22:12

-Hi, guys!

-Hiya.

0:22:120:22:14

So, to find that what is on offer for football fanatics,

0:22:140:22:18

they've come to scout a local club.

0:22:180:22:20

Coach Phil moved here 17 years ago, and he's got good news.

0:22:200:22:24

There's plenty of football.

0:22:260:22:28

This is what they were worried about, that they would come over here and...

0:22:280:22:33

When I came to Australia the only thing I missed was the soccer.

0:22:330:22:37

But now, we have all the games on, so, you'll never miss your soccer.

0:22:370:22:42

Who do you support?

0:22:420:22:43

-Arsenal.

-Man United.

0:22:430:22:45

That's just the result they were looking for,

0:22:460:22:49

except I think Ryan would rather be wearing red.

0:22:490:22:51

Go!

0:22:510:22:53

And while he's put through his paces, Tracy and Alan get

0:22:560:22:58

more good news from another expat family on the touchline.

0:22:580:23:02

The pitch never freezes up, you're not standing with a big jacket on.

0:23:030:23:07

Yeah, you're not waiting for that phone call on Sunday saying,

0:23:070:23:09

"Match cancelled - iced over."

0:23:090:23:11

You don't get any cancelled?

0:23:110:23:13

-No, never, we've been three years now...

-Three years?

0:23:130:23:16

..and our kids have settled right in, and they came over as teenagers.

0:23:160:23:19

There just seems so much out here to do for the kids, doesn't there?

0:23:190:23:22

Yes, there is.

0:23:220:23:24

But moving to Australia isn't just about the boys being able to

0:23:330:23:36

play football.

0:23:360:23:38

Paul and Tracy would love to spend more time together as a family.

0:23:380:23:42

So, today, they're off to visit Perth's Kings Park.

0:23:420:23:45

It's the world's biggest inner-city park,

0:23:450:23:47

and a great way to experience the scale of Australia for free.

0:23:470:23:51

It's lovely, isn't it?!

0:23:510:23:52

Come on, guys!

0:23:530:23:55

Oh, look - a kookaburra!

0:23:550:23:57

Oh, wow, Keira, look!

0:23:570:23:58

Oh, yeah... Don't they make funny noises?

0:23:580:24:01

Oh, yeah, look, Keira!

0:24:010:24:03

Look at the tree.

0:24:030:24:05

Halfway up the tree, where mummy's finger is.

0:24:050:24:08

Yes, I've seen it!

0:24:080:24:10

As usual, Tracy is quick to point out the positives.

0:24:100:24:13

I just think it's absolutely stunning,

0:24:130:24:14

I just said to the kids, you know, it's even the sort

0:24:140:24:17

of place they could come after school,

0:24:170:24:19

or at the weekends with a blanket, chill,

0:24:190:24:22

relax or even do their homework, it's so peaceful and quiet.

0:24:220:24:25

And it's really winning over the rest of the family.

0:24:250:24:28

I don't think we've ever done something like this,

0:24:300:24:33

I don't think we've ever gone out as a family and sat down.

0:24:330:24:38

Every day, I think we could here, cos of what there is...

0:24:380:24:42

and the space...

0:24:420:24:45

Oh, look, look at that view!

0:24:450:24:47

It's beautiful, isn't it?

0:24:470:24:48

Look down there now!

0:24:480:24:49

Isn't it beautiful, Keira?

0:24:490:24:51

I haven't been that positive about the move up until now, I'm starting

0:24:510:24:55

to see that the move, for me, and all of us, would be a good thing.

0:24:550:25:00

This is what I imagined Australia to be, the outdoor life,

0:25:100:25:15

things to do with the kids, cheap things to do with the kids,

0:25:150:25:19

family time, we'd never do this.

0:25:190:25:21

So, after sampling just a little of what is on offer,

0:25:230:25:27

has everyone been convinced by the Australian lifestyle?

0:25:270:25:31

Based on our day out, and my day with the family,

0:25:320:25:35

our vote cast goes to...

0:25:350:25:37

Australia!

0:25:430:25:44

Australia!

0:25:440:25:46

Australia.

0:25:460:25:47

Liam, why you, Liam?

0:25:470:25:49

I thought you would go UK.

0:25:490:25:52

I thought YOU would go UK.

0:25:520:25:54

Based on how nice it is out here,

0:25:540:25:56

it would be Australia, without a doubt.

0:25:560:25:58

There's just absolutely no comparison,

0:25:580:26:00

so, no choice, it had to be Australia.

0:26:000:26:02

What about you, Keira?

0:26:020:26:03

I like the weather.

0:26:030:26:05

This is just the result Tracy hoped for, however, despite

0:26:060:26:10

the unanimous vote, Liam and Paul are still far from certain about moving.

0:26:100:26:16

I would find it hard to actually move out here, cos...

0:26:160:26:20

it's a weird and different lifestyle to what I'm normally used to,

0:26:200:26:25

and it's going to be quite hard for me to fit in here.

0:26:250:26:30

The pressure's on me - it's going to be a hard decision to make.

0:26:300:26:35

Tracy's going to be over the moon right now, but I think

0:26:350:26:38

at the same time, I think she knows, it's not a done deal, yet,

0:26:380:26:42

there's still a long way to go.

0:26:420:26:44

Enjoying the Perth lifestyle was a ray of sunshine for the Evans,

0:26:470:26:52

but Paul and Liam's' worries cast a shadow on the day.

0:26:520:26:55

Everything now rests

0:26:550:26:57

on Tracy being able to find good work opportunities.

0:26:570:27:00

In the UK, Tracy works as a nurse and Paul is a building labourer.

0:27:020:27:06

Both work part-time, and struggle to make ends meet.

0:27:060:27:10

I have a little financial book, and you need so much each week

0:27:100:27:13

to pay this and pay that, and you know,

0:27:130:27:16

one day off with Paul

0:27:160:27:17

and it just mucks up that money that you've got

0:27:170:27:20

coming in for that week - it's not the way to be, just grey hairs,

0:27:200:27:22

every week over money.

0:27:220:27:25

As the main visa applicant,

0:27:250:27:27

it will be down to Tracy to bring in the bacon.

0:27:270:27:30

Paul will be at home in charge of childcare.

0:27:300:27:33

For the first five, six months, I'd be looking after Aaron, and

0:27:330:27:36

then, yes, obviously looking to get into work, once he starts school.

0:27:360:27:42

We've arranged for Tracy to spend the day at Joondalup Hospital,

0:27:420:27:45

to give her a taste of working life in Australia,

0:27:450:27:48

and she's already feeling the pressure.

0:27:480:27:52

I'm feeling very nervous about work in Australia

0:27:520:27:56

and going to find out about it.

0:27:560:27:58

Excited at the same time, but everything depends on work,

0:27:580:28:01

because I'd be the only earner for when we come over here -

0:28:010:28:06

everything rides on the job.

0:28:060:28:09

-Hi!

-Hi, I'm Tracy.

0:28:120:28:14

Tracy is met by Lisa and Aoife,

0:28:140:28:17

both nurses who have also emigrated from Britain.

0:28:170:28:20

So, this is the high dependency unit, and we've actually only been

0:28:230:28:27

open for nearly four weeks, so do you want to come in and have a look.

0:28:270:28:33

It's fabulous.

0:28:330:28:35

And again, all brand-new equipment, all individual rooms.

0:28:350:28:40

Is this the sort of thing that you would have expected?

0:28:400:28:42

No, it's exceeded what I expected.

0:28:420:28:45

They are just beautiful hospitals, aren't they?

0:28:450:28:48

They're just unbelievable, it's like you said,

0:28:480:28:50

you have got state-of-the-art equipment, they are just...

0:28:500:28:53

they just look so brand-new, and clean,

0:28:530:28:56

and they are just stunning hospitals.

0:28:560:28:59

Even walking down the corridor was a pleasure. They are amazing.

0:28:590:29:02

Yes, we are very, very lucky.

0:29:020:29:03

This is a promising start for Tracy.

0:29:030:29:06

In the meantime, Paul and the children are exploring the area.

0:29:080:29:12

They know how much is riding on Tracy finding well-paid work.

0:29:120:29:16

Mum would be very nervous about going into this new job,

0:29:160:29:19

as it's a new environment, new people, and basically...

0:29:190:29:26

she doesn't want to let us down.

0:29:260:29:28

She doesn't want to let herself down,

0:29:280:29:32

she wants to just prove to everyone that this is the right move.

0:29:320:29:37

The salary is a big thing for us,

0:29:370:29:39

cos what she thinks she could earn might be totally

0:29:390:29:44

different from what she's actually offered,

0:29:440:29:47

and that is massive for us and obviously for making the move,

0:29:470:29:49

so it's a massive thing for me, because I'm not prepared to

0:29:490:29:52

make the move if we're just going to be struggling.

0:29:520:29:55

It doesn't make sense, to me,

0:29:550:29:57

because you're giving up a lot of things,

0:29:570:29:59

back in the UK just to move to the other side of the world, and struggle.

0:29:590:30:03

The tour is over and Tracy is keen to get to the nitty-gritty.

0:30:050:30:08

What's the job availability like, say, in a hospital like this,

0:30:100:30:13

are there plenty of jobs going?

0:30:130:30:15

Joondalup is expanding,

0:30:150:30:18

so, there are always opportunities within a growing hospital.

0:30:180:30:23

We do try and recruit nurses here, because we need them.

0:30:230:30:28

What would be the starting salary for a new nurse coming over from the UK?

0:30:280:30:33

I think it's around the 66-67,000 Australian dollars...

0:30:350:30:40

but then you've got, there are other things such as your shift allowance,

0:30:410:30:45

that would all be added on.

0:30:450:30:48

I must admit, that's a lot more, than I thought it would be,

0:30:480:30:51

I thought starting nurses would be

0:30:510:30:53

on about 50-55,000 dollars a year, so that's a good starting....

0:30:530:30:59

And they do recognise your experience that you've heard before,

0:30:590:31:02

so if you've been qualified for a while,

0:31:020:31:05

they will actually give you a salary according to how long

0:31:050:31:09

you've been qualified,

0:31:090:31:11

rather than your experience within that certain field.

0:31:110:31:14

You would never go home now?

0:31:140:31:16

I would never say never,

0:31:160:31:18

but I love it here, my family loves it here,

0:31:180:31:22

my children love it here,

0:31:220:31:23

and if I went home I'd probably have to go on my own,

0:31:230:31:26

so it's not an option.

0:31:260:31:29

We love the lifestyle out here, it's all about family.

0:31:290:31:32

You work, and you work hard, which is good,

0:31:320:31:35

but when you're on your downtime, it's time to put the feet up and

0:31:350:31:39

relax, and it's very much outdoor living, and it's all about family.

0:31:390:31:45

You finish work and go to the beach.

0:31:450:31:47

Yes. Fantastic.

0:31:470:31:50

Very reassuring.

0:31:500:31:52

Thank you.

0:31:520:31:54

It's all good, but with Paul having to stay at home, it would

0:31:540:31:57

mean Tracy having to work full-time, and perhaps doing overtime.

0:31:570:32:00

Is that a sacrifice she is prepared to make?

0:32:000:32:03

Based on my experience today, my vote goes to...

0:32:030:32:07

Australia!

0:32:110:32:13

I think we all knew that was coming!

0:32:130:32:15

The wages are a great bonus,

0:32:150:32:17

because I found out today that I can potentially earn a lot more

0:32:170:32:21

here in Australia as a nurse full-time,

0:32:210:32:24

than I actually could back home in the UK,

0:32:240:32:27

and I know Paul will be really pleased,

0:32:270:32:29

because the wage thing is obviously a huge issue for us.

0:32:290:32:33

Today has really been Tracy's day,

0:32:340:32:37

and she's itching to share the news with Paul.

0:32:370:32:40

All right?

0:32:400:32:42

-Yes.

-How d'you get on?

0:32:420:32:44

Really, really well.

0:32:440:32:46

-Was it?

-It was absolutely fantastic.

0:32:460:32:49

There are plenty of jobs available...

0:32:490:32:51

Oh, they do?

0:32:510:32:52

..wage is about 66-67,000,

0:32:520:32:56

on top of that you've also got lates, nights, weekends,

0:32:560:32:59

there's plenty of opportunities for overtime, the hospitals are just

0:32:590:33:03

outstanding, they're just beautiful, it was lovely, absolutely lovely.

0:33:030:33:09

That's really good, then, isn't it?

0:33:090:33:10

It was really, really good.

0:33:100:33:12

I'm surprised. Would you rather have this job here than...

0:33:120:33:15

I would have to say I would love to work at that hospital, it would be

0:33:170:33:22

the sort of place I would need to go to, leaving what I've left behind.

0:33:220:33:28

Tracy's news has her all but ready to pack her bags for Oz,

0:33:310:33:36

but Paul still needs convincing that things aren't too good to be true.

0:33:360:33:40

Finding out if they really can afford to

0:33:400:33:42

live in Australia could be the reality check everybody needs.

0:33:420:33:46

Looking at the household budget isn't the children's idea of fun...

0:33:470:33:51

-Are you ready to go, Shorts?

-Yeah.

-Come on, then.

0:33:510:33:53

..so they are off to play in the sunshine,

0:33:530:33:56

while mum and dad get to grips with some serious sums.

0:33:560:33:59

We've prepared a table,

0:34:010:34:03

comparing day-to-day living costs in the UK with those in Australia.

0:34:030:34:07

So how do they add up?

0:34:070:34:09

Right, shopping list.

0:34:110:34:14

And, as usual,

0:34:140:34:15

Tracy's leaning towards the positives of Aussie living.

0:34:150:34:18

Cheaper, cheaper, cheaper, cheaper...

0:34:180:34:24

Hold on, I'm sure Australian living costs are higher.

0:34:240:34:28

That one is cheaper, ketchup's cheaper.

0:34:280:34:30

Look, it's at the bottom, you've got... All right?

0:34:300:34:33

Yeah, you've got the UK...

0:34:330:34:35

£123,

0:34:350:34:39

and then Australia, 170.

0:34:390:34:41

Well spotted, Paul.

0:34:410:34:43

That's nearly £50 a month extra on food.

0:34:430:34:46

So, what about the other costs?

0:34:460:34:48

At the moment, they pay £1,200 rent per month at home.

0:34:480:34:53

Right, properties, do you want to work it out...

0:34:530:34:55

-We'll work it out on property three...

-OK.

0:34:550:34:57

..and then we can always look at the property round about.

0:34:570:35:01

Yes, because we'd be quite happy to live in something like property one.

0:35:010:35:04

OK.

0:35:040:35:06

Due to the demand for nurses,

0:35:060:35:08

Tracy's job could entitle the family to extra benefits.

0:35:080:35:12

But will those make emigrating affordable?

0:35:120:35:15

Yeah, yeah, oh, right, they've taken that into account.

0:35:170:35:20

So we're actually £615 a month better off in Australia.

0:35:200:35:26

And we get a tan.

0:35:260:35:28

And that's been done on the most expensive property.

0:35:280:35:31

Yes, I'm shocked.

0:35:310:35:33

And this is just based on me working.

0:35:330:35:35

You know, when Aaron goes to school out here,

0:35:350:35:37

if you then wanted to go and find work,

0:35:370:35:39

-we've then got two incomes coming in, we're potentially laughing.

-Yeah.

0:35:390:35:44

Because my wages is paying all of this,

0:35:440:35:46

-so whatever you earn, is play money...

-Extra.

0:35:460:35:51

That's great news for Tracy.

0:35:510:35:53

The Evans can afford the house of their dreams,

0:35:530:35:55

and still be financially better off in Australia.

0:35:550:35:58

I knew, at the end of the day, that the whole dream would have ended on

0:35:580:36:04

this one piece of paper quite easily, and it's just ignited it instead...

0:36:040:36:09

-So, it's all good.

-It's all good.

0:36:100:36:13

Shall we move here?

0:36:130:36:15

I thought all along that Tracy was not lying, but just living in

0:36:180:36:22

her little fantasy world,

0:36:220:36:25

but this has just made it more reality, now.

0:36:250:36:27

I've only got to get over one other obstacle, now,

0:36:270:36:31

which is leaving my family.

0:36:310:36:33

So, with worries about leaving family still to be resolved,

0:36:330:36:37

has Paul been swayed by seeing they

0:36:370:36:38

can afford a better life in Australia?

0:36:380:36:41

After looking at the figures, today, and being pleasantly surprised,

0:36:410:36:46

at the cost of living in Australia, we're now going to vote for...

0:36:460:36:50

BOTH: Australia.

0:36:530:36:55

It's another vote for Tracy's dream,

0:36:550:36:57

and when the children get back, there's good news on the table.

0:36:570:37:01

All right?

0:37:020:37:04

What's the verdict?

0:37:050:37:07

Why is there a face on that?

0:37:070:37:09

A smiley face?

0:37:090:37:10

Mummy's happy!

0:37:100:37:11

I'm happy because we can afford to live here, we're much,

0:37:110:37:14

much better off in Australia than we would be back at home.

0:37:140:37:17

I'd like to live in Australia.

0:37:170:37:19

You would? Well, we can.

0:37:190:37:21

And we can afford to live in Australia, as well.

0:37:210:37:24

Seeing the figures in black

0:37:270:37:28

and white looks to have made the breakthrough Tracy has been

0:37:280:37:31

hoping for, but there's still one cost the Evans have to face -

0:37:310:37:35

the reality of leaving behind the people they love.

0:37:350:37:38

We have prepared a DVD of thoughts from friends and family back home.

0:37:400:37:44

As there are messages for everyone, Paul

0:37:440:37:46

and Tracy have decided to watch them with the children.

0:37:460:37:49

Hi, guys, hope you're having a wonderful time,

0:37:520:37:54

hope you're really enjoying it out there.

0:37:540:37:56

Hi guys, hope you're having a great time there in Australia,

0:37:560:37:59

and the weather is great.

0:37:590:38:01

Tracy's a hard-working girl,

0:38:010:38:03

she can find work out there and she'll do well at it,

0:38:030:38:06

she's very good at her profession,

0:38:060:38:08

and she's a lovely daughter-in-law, she's smashing, she really is.

0:38:080:38:12

I can't go to the airport, or anything like that,

0:38:120:38:15

because I think I'd just have to jump in front of the plane.

0:38:150:38:18

Erm, I know there are telephones,

0:38:180:38:22

Sky something or other,

0:38:220:38:24

that you can talk to them on computers,

0:38:240:38:26

and things like that, but you don't get the cuddles,

0:38:260:38:31

you don't get the things that happen in a moment...

0:38:310:38:37

something they say,

0:38:370:38:39

or do, that's there for a minute, and then it's gone.

0:38:390:38:44

It's those sort of things that...

0:38:460:38:51

..I will miss.

0:38:520:38:54

They're not just your own children, they're your best friends,

0:38:550:38:58

and it's like losing a good mate, a really good mate, that you've

0:38:580:39:03

known for years and years, because he's not just my son,

0:39:030:39:06

he's a good mate, and I will miss that, a lot,

0:39:060:39:09

because I see a lot of them, we see a lot of him,

0:39:090:39:11

and we're as close as that.

0:39:110:39:13

Obviously, I love him so much.

0:39:130:39:15

You know, he's my son.

0:39:150:39:17

The bond between my daughter

0:39:190:39:21

and myself is such it can never be broken, no matter how far away

0:39:210:39:27

she is, whether she was in this country...

0:39:270:39:30

or Australia.

0:39:300:39:31

So, she will always be in my heart and my thoughts.

0:39:330:39:40

Paul, just speaking to you personally,

0:39:400:39:43

I know we've had this conversation many times in the last few months,

0:39:430:39:46

but, you know, love you lots and lots, you know that,

0:39:460:39:49

but, I hope you have just one last thought about going to

0:39:490:39:54

Australia, and I hope you change your mind.

0:39:540:39:56

If you decide to go back to Australia,

0:39:560:39:59

or stay in Australia, I will miss you all very, very much,

0:39:590:40:05

and my message to you is, "Don't forget your nan,"

0:40:050:40:09

I love you all.

0:40:090:40:11

Wow!

0:40:130:40:15

Are you all right, Keira?

0:40:160:40:18

That's all right, darling!

0:40:190:40:22

You've seen Nanny, there, didn't you?

0:40:220:40:24

They would just miss us, wouldn't they?

0:40:390:40:41

Now we know everyone's thoughts, don't we?

0:40:480:40:50

The prospect of leaving loved ones is always painful.

0:40:530:40:57

For those moving, and those left behind.

0:40:570:41:00

But over the last seven days,

0:41:000:41:01

the Evans have fallen for life in Australia, so are they ready

0:41:010:41:04

to take that huge final step and vote for a new start down under?

0:41:040:41:09

Seeing my friends and family was probably the worst thing I've

0:41:140:41:19

ever had to do in my life.

0:41:190:41:22

It's still hard when you see it on there, and your dad is saying,

0:41:220:41:24

"Don't go!"

0:41:240:41:26

As well as bringing the family closer together, we're

0:41:260:41:28

also tearing it apart, and that's going to be the hardest thing for me.

0:41:280:41:31

I'm not 100% on which way I'm going to vote, yet.

0:41:310:41:34

Yes, this decision I've got to make,

0:41:360:41:38

is easily the hardest decision of my life, really.

0:41:380:41:42

And so our final vote goes to...

0:41:450:41:47

Australia!

0:41:500:41:52

Australia!

0:41:530:41:55

Australia!

0:41:550:41:56

Australia!

0:41:590:42:00

Australia!

0:42:020:42:04

-Wow!

-Yes, Liam!

0:42:040:42:07

We've seen what it's like, what it could be like.

0:42:070:42:10

We know we can afford to do it.

0:42:100:42:12

And I just think it would be better for us

0:42:120:42:14

as a family to at least try it, and experience it.

0:42:140:42:17

I just think it's the right thing to do, that's it.

0:42:180:42:21

-Keira, do you want to come and live in Australia?

-Yes.

0:42:230:42:26

It seems like a much better lifestyle for us.

0:42:260:42:28

At the end of the day, as a family,

0:42:280:42:31

if you get the chance like we have to come over here and live it,

0:42:310:42:35

then you should take that chance with both hands.

0:42:350:42:38

It's like Liam and Paul have always said, "Give it a couple of years -

0:42:380:42:41

"if you don't like it, you go home,"

0:42:410:42:43

It's better than never coming out here and spending the rest

0:42:430:42:46

of your life thinking, "What if?"

0:42:460:42:48

So, to all you viewers back home...

0:42:480:42:50

Oh, no - cut!

0:42:500:42:52

After years of dreaming of a new life down under,

0:42:560:42:59

Tracy has finally won over her family.

0:42:590:43:02

And wherever their journey takes them, we wish them the very best.
