Uprooting your family for a new start abroad is a

0:00:020:00:05

once in a lifetime challenge. Well, at least it is for most of us.

0:00:050:00:09

But what if your dreams were still unfulfilled after moving

0:00:090:00:12

halfway around the world?

0:00:120:00:14

Would you be willing to go through it all over again?

0:00:140:00:17

Craig and Chantelle France-Brotherton were forced

0:00:170:00:19

to give up the life they loved in South Africa.

0:00:190:00:22

We had people break into our home

0:00:220:00:24

in the very early hours of the morning, and we were both shot.

0:00:240:00:28

But Craig is struggling to find a place to call home.

0:00:280:00:32

It gets me down in the UK, to stay inside of the time

0:00:320:00:36

makes me feel claustrophobic.

0:00:360:00:38

And he has to convince his family to start a new life all over again.

0:00:380:00:43

It just takes such a lot of work.

0:00:450:00:48

And I'm just not sure I can do it again.

0:00:480:00:52

With thousands of miles of pristine beaches and a sunny climate,

0:01:150:01:19

Australia is the number one destination for people

0:01:190:01:22

moving out of the UK.

0:01:220:01:24

However, the new life they sought doesn't always match up to

0:01:240:01:27

expectations and over 10,000 return home every year

0:01:270:01:32

to the life they left behind.

0:01:320:01:33

The France-Brothertons have just one week to experience

0:01:340:01:38

the reality of living in Australia.

0:01:380:01:40

At the end of it, they'll face a life-changing decision -

0:01:400:01:43

whether to stay in the UK or to make the move down under a permanent one.

0:01:430:01:48

The first part of the journey takes

0:01:500:01:52

them 11,000 miles around the globe to Perth.

0:01:520:01:55

The 24 hours in the air have not settled Chantelle's worries.

0:01:580:02:02

I'm a little bit nervous, to be honest because...

0:02:020:02:06

..you don't quite know how things are going to turn out for real.

0:02:070:02:11

There's a lot to find out and a lot of decisions to make, I think.

0:02:110:02:14

So I was a bit nervous before.

0:02:160:02:17

I'm quite a lot more nervous now that Craig's opened his mouth.

0:02:170:02:20

Yes, Craig had better be careful about what he says.

0:02:220:02:25

Australia is his dream and he has a long way to go

0:02:250:02:28

to convince his family to emigrate.

0:02:280:02:30

The France-Brotherton family are made up of Craig,

0:02:330:02:36

Chantelle, and their three children,

0:02:360:02:39

13-year-old Alison and twins, Roxanne and Tristan, age five.

0:02:390:02:43

For the last ten years, they've lived in Donnington near Birmingham.

0:02:450:02:49

They are originally from South Africa, but a terrifying event

0:02:490:02:52

left them unable to face living there any longer.

0:02:520:02:56

We had a violent incident, on our farm 13 years ago.

0:02:560:02:59

We had people break in to our home in the very early hours of the morning

0:03:010:03:05

and we were both shot.

0:03:050:03:07

So Craig was in hospital for six months, on and off for six months.

0:03:070:03:11

And I was in there for a month and a half.

0:03:110:03:13

So we decided there and then that we would be leaving South Africa.

0:03:130:03:17

Mostly, because we wanted to give Alison the opportunity

0:03:190:03:22

to have a safer and more reliable existence than

0:03:220:03:25

we could offer living in South Africa.

0:03:250:03:28

The experience definitely changed our outlook on life.

0:03:300:03:33

There's no two ways about it.

0:03:330:03:34

To me, it's not a case of careers and this sort of thing,

0:03:340:03:37

it's a case of living to the max.

0:03:370:03:39

I mean, that's why I like to go and experience things.

0:03:390:03:43

You try and be philosophical about these things, obviously,

0:03:430:03:46

cos they happen and lots worse things happen to lots of people, so

0:03:460:03:50

you just say, "Well, it's happened, we've experienced it, we survived it,

0:03:500:03:53

"let's move on."

0:03:530:03:55

As their grandparents were originally from the UK,

0:03:550:03:57

it was Chantelle's first choice for a new home.

0:03:570:04:00

To be honest, it's one of the best things I've ever done.

0:04:000:04:04

I've really, really valued every moment that I've had in UK.

0:04:040:04:08

-I love the UK.

-I don't regret coming over here at all.

-No.

0:04:080:04:13

Although they love living in the UK,

0:04:140:04:17

it's a far cry from the life they left behind in South Africa.

0:04:170:04:20

In South Africa, ten years ago, we used to live on a farm,

0:04:220:04:25

you know, wide open space of 25 acres, it's huge.

0:04:250:04:31

I think the closest house was 300 metres away.

0:04:310:04:35

For Craig in particular, it was the ideal lifestyle.

0:04:350:04:38

He was outside all the time, repairing the roof,

0:04:380:04:42

and it was like a total cut-off for him,

0:04:420:04:44

we came to the UK and he didn't do any of those things anymore.

0:04:440:04:47

So I think that he's really after something he's lost.

0:04:470:04:50

To help Craig find what's missing in his life,

0:04:520:04:54

Chantelle has agreed to give Australia a try.

0:04:540:04:57

Craig agreed to come to the UK on condition that

0:04:570:05:00

if he wasn't happy we would consider going somewhere else,

0:05:000:05:05

and Australia was always the place he was talking about.

0:05:050:05:08

Craig is hoping Australia will give a better life for his family.

0:05:080:05:13

Luckily, their daughter Alison is also taken by the idea.

0:05:130:05:17

Overall, about Australia, I think

0:05:170:05:19

yeah, I think I'm really excited about it.

0:05:190:05:22

It's a new adventure so I'm looking forward to going there

0:05:220:05:26

and trying it out.

0:05:260:05:27

However, having built new friendships and a successful

0:05:280:05:31

career in the UK, Chantelle is torn by the idea of giving it all up.

0:05:310:05:36

Family isn't only about those people you're related to.

0:05:360:05:39

It's your really, really close friends, those people that

0:05:390:05:43

I feel like I've grown up with them, even though I haven't.

0:05:430:05:47

I met them when I came to England. So...

0:05:470:05:50

Chantelle's mum has also moved to the UK.

0:05:500:05:54

Emigrating to Oz would mean saying goodbye to her again.

0:05:540:05:58

Thing is, I probably won't get to see my mum very much

0:05:580:06:01

because she likes to go to South Africa where my gran is,

0:06:010:06:05

and my grandad, when she has time away.

0:06:050:06:08

So I don't really know whether she'll be able to come and visit us or not.

0:06:100:06:15

Australia might be Craig's hope of a better life,

0:06:160:06:19

but it's a dream that could leave his family torn.

0:06:190:06:23

She will definitely be giving up a lot here.

0:06:230:06:26

She's made her life in the UK, really.

0:06:260:06:28

I wouldn't say everything she wants,

0:06:300:06:33

but, you know, she's getting there.

0:06:330:06:36

Craig hasn't really,

0:06:360:06:39

necessarily, I think, invested...

0:06:390:06:41

..as much in the UK.

0:06:440:06:46

But, you know, I'm thinking,

0:06:470:06:51

am I going to have to do that all over again in Australia?

0:06:510:06:55

It just takes such a lot of work.

0:06:550:06:57

And I'm just not sure I can do it again.

0:06:580:07:02

Both Craig and Chantelle know just how difficult

0:07:120:07:16

emigrating can be. But Craig still yearns for the happiness

0:07:160:07:19

he hopes Australia will bring.

0:07:190:07:22

He has just one week to convince Chantelle to give up the life

0:07:220:07:25

she's built in the UK.

0:07:250:07:27

The France-Brothertons will be spending their trial week in Perth.

0:07:280:07:32

It's a bustling city that's benefiting from the economic boom

0:07:320:07:36

in Western Australia.

0:07:360:07:37

And being spread out along the coast means there's easy access to

0:07:370:07:41

national parks and open countryside, which should suit Craig.

0:07:410:07:46

The final leg of the journey brings the France-Brothertons

0:07:460:07:48

to their home for the week in the area of Bickley.

0:07:480:07:52

Set on the outskirts of Perth,

0:07:520:07:54

it should give a good idea of country living.

0:07:540:07:56

Right away, one person is suitably impressed.

0:08:000:08:04

(TRISTAN) Wow! Cool!

0:08:040:08:07

-What's cool, boy?

-This garden.

0:08:070:08:10

-This garden is cool?

-Lots of space to run around.

0:08:100:08:14

However, everyone seems a lot less excited about running around

0:08:160:08:20

inside the house.

0:08:200:08:21

Chantelle hasn't been impressed by this house and it's got her

0:08:270:08:30

worried about what emigrating to the Australian countryside might mean.

0:08:300:08:35

I'm concerned that when you move to this kind of area,

0:08:350:08:38

you normally have to buy an older house

0:08:380:08:40

and they don't have as much storage,

0:08:400:08:42

and that kind of stuff, as we need, which means we would be back

0:08:420:08:44

to me living in our DIY project with you, and I'm not doing that.

0:08:440:08:48

I love you, but I'm not doing that.

0:08:500:08:51

I'm not too worried about the place, I think it's nice.

0:08:510:08:54

I'm more worried about what's around outside, you know?

0:08:540:08:58

Land and loads of space, it's great. It's fantastic. I love the trees.

0:08:580:09:03

Actually, I think it's even better than I imagined.

0:09:030:09:06

Really, really stunning.

0:09:060:09:07

I really want to cry.

0:09:110:09:13

SHE LAUGHS

0:09:130:09:15

SHE SIGHS

0:09:170:09:19

I'm just disappointed.

0:09:190:09:22

Oh, that's a stupid thing to say, but it's true.

0:09:230:09:26

Fortunately, Tristan and Roxanne don't have any issues

0:09:260:09:29

about storage or space.

0:09:290:09:31

Look at that.

0:09:330:09:34

Back in the UK, the France-Brothertons own a

0:09:410:09:44

three-bedroom house, which they've made into a home they love.

0:09:440:09:48

I'm happy here. We've been renovating this house since we moved in,

0:09:480:09:53

which is eight years ago.

0:09:530:09:54

And we're kind of just coming to the culmination of that now.

0:09:560:10:01

So if we decided to move to Australia in the near future,

0:10:010:10:04

that means all of this work has been for somebody else.

0:10:040:10:08

Hurrah.

0:10:090:10:11

Having lived a very different life in South Africa,

0:10:110:10:13

they have strong ideas about what they'd like from an Australian home.

0:10:130:10:17

We are looking for something where we've got some space around us.

0:10:170:10:21

Not really interested in living in suburbia because I'd like a big

0:10:210:10:25

enough garden for the kids to be able to play ball games and have a pool.

0:10:250:10:29

-Five acres.

-Five acres. Yes, love.

0:10:290:10:32

We've organised for the France-Brothertons to sample

0:10:340:10:37

Perth's housing market. We'll show them three typical options,

0:10:370:10:41

ranging from what they want in their ideal home to what they can afford.

0:10:410:10:46

After seeing for themselves what's on offer,

0:10:460:10:48

they'll find out the price of each house.

0:10:480:10:50

Their first stop is in Ellenbrook on the outskirts of Perth.

0:10:520:10:55

It's a rural area close to national parks,

0:10:550:10:58

but the housing is made up of busy estates.

0:10:580:11:01

The family are viewing a four-bedroom show home.

0:11:010:11:04

This is a classic Aussie house, sleek and modern,

0:11:040:11:07

just what Chantelle wants.

0:11:070:11:09

It's not exactly what I expected.

0:11:110:11:13

-But then we can choose where to build this?

-I believe so, yeah.

-Right, OK.

0:11:140:11:19

It may not have the amount of land Craig would like, but they

0:11:190:11:22

could have this design built on a bigger plot if they like the house.

0:11:220:11:27

Let's have a look.

0:11:270:11:29

Very spacious.

0:11:320:11:33

Oh, wow, Craigie, look at this. Oh, I like it.

0:11:340:11:38

Oh, lovely, yeah.

0:11:380:11:39

This is definitely a good start.

0:11:390:11:42

In fact, I think Chantelle might have taken

0:11:420:11:45

more than a liking to this house.

0:11:450:11:47

-I love this.

-It's nice.

-I do. I just love it.

0:11:470:11:51

Oh...

0:11:510:11:52

I like that it's complete, that you can just move in,

0:11:540:11:58

you don't have to do anything to it.

0:11:580:11:59

I love the open way that Australian houses are designed in terms

0:11:590:12:04

of the kitchen, the living area,

0:12:040:12:05

because it just fits the way that we want to live anyway, doesn't it?

0:12:050:12:09

I want to be up to just get in and have parties.

0:12:090:12:11

Yep, Chantelle has definitely fallen head over heels

0:12:120:12:15

for this house. But will the bedrooms keep the romance going?

0:12:150:12:19

Oh, Craigie!

0:12:190:12:20

-This is nice.

-Lookie, lookie, lookie!

0:12:210:12:24

-I love it.

-My goodness, it's huge.

0:12:240:12:27

SONG: "Je T'aime...Moi Non-Plus"

0:12:270:12:29

Storage!

0:12:290:12:30

Where are going to put your clothes?

0:12:320:12:34

-I'm sure it's big enough, love.

-It's gorgeous.

-It is stunning.

0:12:340:12:38

Well, it certainly satisfied Chantelle's needs.

0:12:380:12:41

Can the garden do the same for Craig?

0:12:410:12:43

-It's really lovely, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is nice.

0:12:430:12:45

The only thing is, there isn't very much space.

0:12:450:12:49

I don't know if the plot of land that you choose is any bigger than this.

0:12:490:12:54

The plot I want would definitely have to be bigger than this.

0:12:540:12:57

We absolutely need more space than this.

0:12:590:13:02

That is a shame. This house is certainly

0:13:020:13:04

in their ideal home category, but the garden just isn't big enough.

0:13:040:13:09

The question is, can Craig and Chantelle even afford it

0:13:090:13:12

on their £250,000 budget, let alone one on a bigger plot?

0:13:120:13:17

For the land, it'll probably be over, won't it?

0:13:170:13:20

I would think so.

0:13:200:13:22

Look, come on, find out.

0:13:230:13:25

Come on, look.

0:13:270:13:29

Let's have it.

0:13:310:13:33

Yeah. So this is 400,000 and that's without the land.

0:13:360:13:40

£257,000 is right at the top of their budget,

0:13:400:13:44

leaving nothing to buy more land.

0:13:440:13:46

So this is what we can't have.

0:13:460:13:48

Let's go and find out what we can have.

0:13:510:13:53

-Right, shall we round up our children?

-And off we go, yeah.

0:13:550:13:58

Before they damage a house we can't afford.

0:13:580:14:00

SHE LAUGHS

0:14:000:14:02

Then we can go.

0:14:020:14:03

It seemed like a promising start to Craig's hope

0:14:050:14:07

of convincing Chantelle to emigrate.

0:14:070:14:10

But if they can only just afford this house,

0:14:100:14:13

could something similar, but with lots of land, be out of reach?

0:14:130:14:17

One solution would be to look further out from the city.

0:14:170:14:20

So they've come to the Wundowie area. As it's quite rural,

0:14:200:14:24

properties with large amounts of land are more affordable.

0:14:240:14:27

However, it's over 40 miles from Perth,

0:14:270:14:30

meaning long commutes for work.

0:14:300:14:32

This is more like it, isn't it, Craigie?

0:14:320:14:34

This three-bedroom house does come with nearly four acres of land,

0:14:360:14:40

but it's not the pristine show home they've just seen.

0:14:400:14:43

I'm guessing that silence is not speechless with delight.

0:14:510:14:55

Oh, dear.

0:14:550:14:58

There's definitely work to be done, isn't there?

0:14:580:15:00

This house might have the space Chantelle and Craig would like,

0:15:000:15:03

but they can both see it would need some serious TLC.

0:15:030:15:07

There's loads of work to be done.

0:15:070:15:09

-Is this a room?

-No.

0:15:120:15:14

-Built-in wardrobes of a fashion.

-Yeah.

0:15:160:15:19

OK. And bedroom number four.

0:15:210:15:24

Nice storage, yeah. It would have to be redone again.

0:15:240:15:28

Every room in his house will probably need to be stripped down and redone.

0:15:280:15:32

And this time, Chantelle isn't quite so taken with open-plan living.

0:15:340:15:39

It's not the way that I would like it to be set out,

0:15:390:15:41

so we would need to do it again. Let's look outside, obviously. But...

0:15:410:15:46

I wouldn't... I can't see myself living here, Craig.

0:15:480:15:52

There are four acres of land.

0:15:520:15:55

Can that make up for the shortcomings of this house?

0:15:550:15:57

It's quite big, hey? It's quite a big piece of land.

0:15:570:16:00

-Definitely big enough, I think.

-Yeah.

0:16:020:16:05

It's just a pity about the house, you know?

0:16:050:16:07

I mean, everything else you can sort out, but the house.

0:16:070:16:12

-No.

-You'd have to start from scratch.

0:16:120:16:14

No, I'm afraid you're absolutely right.

0:16:160:16:19

It is a real pity because they love this, don't they?

0:16:190:16:22

Craig and the children might love the outside space,

0:16:220:16:25

but they know this house isn't going to win Mum over.

0:16:250:16:29

She likes everything to be clean and easy to clean

0:16:290:16:33

and it doesn't look like it's going to be easy to clean.

0:16:330:16:36

She likes lots of storage, as you probably gathered.

0:16:360:16:40

But we like the space, don't we, Tristan?

0:16:400:16:42

Yeah, we like that space, don't we?

0:16:420:16:44

We like all the space so we can run around and just do what we want to.

0:16:440:16:49

Perhaps the price can turn the house into a contender.

0:16:490:16:52

The right figure could mean money left over

0:16:520:16:54

to fix it up to their taste.

0:16:540:16:56

Shall we find out?

0:16:560:16:57

-Roxy?

-You can turn it over if you like, Roxanne.

0:17:030:17:06

Ah, how many is that?

0:17:070:17:09

Two, seven, zero, zero, zero, zero.

0:17:090:17:13

That's £20,000 over budget.

0:17:130:17:17

This house costs more than the house that we just saw in suburbia.

0:17:170:17:23

I don't think it's going to be an easy job to find a house that we

0:17:240:17:28

-want on our budget.

-I don't think it's going to be an easy job, at all.

0:17:280:17:31

It's a big setback for Craig's dream.

0:17:310:17:34

This house had the land he wants,

0:17:340:17:36

but it doesn't look like Chantelle would want to live here.

0:17:360:17:39

Now there's only one property left to convince her on Australian homes.

0:17:400:17:44

The Mundaring area, 20 miles east of Perth,

0:17:460:17:49

is halfway between urban and rural.

0:17:490:17:52

This could mean the France-Brothertons being able to

0:17:520:17:54

afford a house with a large garden

0:17:540:17:56

while being close to facilities and the countryside.

0:17:560:17:59

This three-bedroom property does have the modern look that the family

0:18:010:18:05

all like. But can it come anywhere near the first one,

0:18:050:18:07

which everyone fell in love with?

0:18:070:18:09

OK.

0:18:110:18:12

-This is nice.

-Yeah.

0:18:150:18:16

Nice enough size.

0:18:180:18:20

So that's nice.

0:18:210:18:23

-A little study off the living area.

-That's really nice, yeah.

-Storage!

0:18:230:18:27

-I mean, this is nice.

-For a kids room, yeah.

-It's nice enough.

0:18:290:18:33

-This is really nice, Craigie.

-Yeah, nice stove.

-Yeah.

0:18:360:18:40

Well, this may be a "nice" house, but it's safe to say

0:18:400:18:44

it's not love at first sight.

0:18:440:18:46

Will the garden elicit a different response?

0:18:460:18:48

This is very nice.

0:18:480:18:50

Maybe not.

0:18:500:18:52

It is a good size garden, but it's not what Craig had hoped for.

0:18:520:18:55

It's a lot of compromise, you know?

0:18:560:18:58

It actually all depends on the price, really.

0:18:580:19:01

Yeah, does.

0:19:010:19:03

You want to have a bounce on the trampoline?

0:19:050:19:08

OK, let's find out the cost of this house, then.

0:19:080:19:11

Maybe it can lift everyone's subdued spirits.

0:19:110:19:14

Right, Roxy, let your brother do it this time.

0:19:150:19:19

Turn it over.

0:19:190:19:20

OK.

0:19:230:19:24

That's £50,000 over budget and a real blow to Craig's dream.

0:19:240:19:28

I can't see it at that sort of price. If it was 100,000...

0:19:280:19:33

-Well, that's what it costs.

-100,000 cheaper, yeah, maybe.

0:19:330:19:37

Not at 460.

0:19:370:19:39

Definitely.

0:19:400:19:41

So what it's just telling you, is for a tiny bit of extra land,

0:19:410:19:45

you have to pay significantly more. It's not proportionate.

0:19:450:19:48

House-hunting around Perth has been a real eye-opener

0:19:520:19:55

for the France-Brothertons.

0:19:550:19:57

Everybody fell for the "wow" of the first modern show home,

0:19:570:20:01

especially if they could afford more land to put it on.

0:20:010:20:04

The second had the land Craig wants, but the house was a no-no

0:20:040:20:07

and over budget.

0:20:070:20:09

And the final house, which was perfectly nice, did show that

0:20:090:20:13

affording the house and the land might be beyond their means.

0:20:130:20:17

So have these properties convinced anyone that leaving

0:20:170:20:19

the UK would be worth the upheaval?

0:20:190:20:22

Think we're going to vote for...

0:20:230:20:25

-Undecided.

-Undecided.

0:20:290:20:31

Australia? You two said Australia! Do you like Australian houses?

0:20:310:20:35

Well, we're going to have to use your piggy bank money, then.

0:20:350:20:39

Doesn't look like we can afford what we really want,

0:20:390:20:42

in terms of land and the home that we have on it, in Australia

0:20:420:20:46

or in the UK. That's why I've voted undecided.

0:20:460:20:49

I voted undecided because if I want the land,

0:20:490:20:53

there's going to be a lot more research needed to be done.

0:20:530:20:56

That wasn't the start the France-Brothertons

0:21:020:21:04

were hoping for in Australia.

0:21:040:21:06

Craig's dream of a house with land is looking like an expensive one.

0:21:060:21:10

It leaves both Craig and Chantelle

0:21:100:21:13

in need of finding good work prospects in Perth.

0:21:130:21:16

In the UK, Craig works as a telecom technician

0:21:160:21:20

and Chantelle is a human resources manager in the NHS.

0:21:200:21:23

Today, while the children are looked after by a childminder,

0:21:230:21:26

we've arranged for both of them to find out

0:21:260:21:29

just what working in Australia could mean.

0:21:290:21:31

After the setbacks of property prices, everything is riding on

0:21:310:21:36

Craig and Chantelle being able to earn good wages.

0:21:360:21:39

Craig is the main visa applicant and he's meeting with

0:21:390:21:42

company director, Doug Butcher,

0:21:420:21:43

who has a little surprise to test his skills.

0:21:430:21:46

I've got a client upstairs.

0:21:460:21:48

-Shall we go up and have a look?

-Yeah, fantastic, let's go.

0:21:480:21:51

-There's a cable. There's a handset. Hook it up.

-Excellent, yeah.

0:21:530:21:57

I am a bit nervous today.

0:22:040:22:05

My job is really important to me

0:22:070:22:09

and I've worked really hard over the last ten years.

0:22:090:22:12

I'm worried that if I come to Australia, I'll have to start

0:22:120:22:14

all over again. I don't want to have to do that.

0:22:140:22:17

To help address her worries, Chantelle is meeting with

0:22:170:22:20

recruitment consultant, Kira Benton, who moved here from the UK.

0:22:200:22:24

It's a great chance for Chantelle to impress

0:22:270:22:29

with her knowledge of the industry.

0:22:290:22:32

While I'm happy to do HRM, my preference is LND, really.

0:22:320:22:36

Doing lots of work with SMEs, kind of on a consultancy basis

0:22:360:22:40

without including ETs and all that kind of stuff.

0:22:400:22:42

That certainly sounds impressive.

0:22:420:22:45

Meanwhile, with Craig's task completed,

0:22:450:22:47

it's time to find out what his skills could be worth.

0:22:470:22:50

Your CV looks pretty good. Obviously, you're quite experienced.

0:22:520:22:55

In terms of what sort of pay you can expect in Perth,

0:22:550:22:58

typically, an apprentice or a new qualified tech

0:22:580:23:03

will take home somewhere around about the 45-50,000 mark.

0:23:030:23:07

A more experienced tech, like yourself, would probably

0:23:070:23:10

be looking at somewhere between 55 to maybe 70.

0:23:100:23:14

That could mean Craig doubling his salary to around £50,000.

0:23:140:23:18

But crucially, would he have time to enjoy living in Australia?

0:23:180:23:22

I just wanted to ask you about the working hours,

0:23:220:23:25

which I'm quite interested in.

0:23:250:23:27

Having worked in the UK myself a number of years ago,

0:23:280:23:31

I think what you'll find is the working hours in Perth are probably

0:23:310:23:35

a little bit longer than what you would have experienced in the UK.

0:23:350:23:38

Like any technical position,

0:23:380:23:41

you should be aware, there will be some unsociable hours,

0:23:410:23:44

but it's really not that bad.

0:23:440:23:47

Well, this all looks good, Craig,

0:23:470:23:49

and I think you've got excellent chances of employment here.

0:23:490:23:54

And, yeah, when you get back, you should probably give us a call.

0:23:540:23:58

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

-Cheers.

0:23:580:24:02

Craig's work prospects do look positive,

0:24:020:24:04

but only if he can face the possibility of long hours.

0:24:040:24:07

Back at Kira's office,

0:24:070:24:09

Chantelle is getting to the most important questions.

0:24:090:24:12

What kind of salary do you think we're looking at?

0:24:120:24:14

For a learning and development role you'll probably have a starting salary

0:24:140:24:17

of about £100-£120 per annum.

0:24:170:24:19

Would that be within what you're expecting?

0:24:190:24:22

That sounds about equivalent to where I am now

0:24:220:24:25

so I'm comfortable with that in terms of...

0:24:250:24:29

I would obviously like to improve my prospects as I go along,

0:24:290:24:33

but that sounds really good,

0:24:330:24:34

it sounds like I wouldn't have to take too big a step back.

0:24:340:24:37

I think, long-term, if you were to look at senior strategic learning and development roles

0:24:370:24:42

you could head towards the 150-200K salary mark.

0:24:420:24:46

That's great news. Even the starting salary would be £60,000,

0:24:460:24:51

£20,000 more than she currently earns.

0:24:510:24:54

But are there any vacancies?

0:24:540:24:55

How do you think the job market is in Perth at the moment?

0:24:550:24:58

-Do you think there are a lot of opportunities?

-There are.

0:24:580:25:01

If it gives you any assurance, I'm currently trying to recruit

0:25:010:25:03

a learning and development manager position for Perth

0:25:030:25:06

and the client hasn't been able to source anyone in the market

0:25:060:25:09

so they've opened the search and are currently interviewing people

0:25:090:25:12

based in the UK who are looking to relocate here.

0:25:120:25:14

To top that, they're offering sponsorship.

0:25:140:25:16

-Excellent, that's brilliant news for me, isn't it!

-Definitely.

0:25:160:25:20

If you do end up moving make sure that you give me a call.

0:25:200:25:22

I will definitely do that.

0:25:220:25:24

Thank you so much for seeing me and for your time. I'm grateful.

0:25:240:25:27

-Really great to meet you. Best of luck with everything.

-Thank you very much.

0:25:270:25:31

Potential work and higher salary.

0:25:310:25:33

That must be reassuring news for Chantelle.

0:25:330:25:36

When she eventually meets up with Craig

0:25:360:25:38

it's a chance to catch up on their day.

0:25:380:25:40

-How did it go?

-Really well.

-Yeah?

-And yours?

-Very good, actually.

0:25:460:25:51

I'm really impressed.

0:25:510:25:53

Does that mean they've been swayed by the possibility

0:25:530:25:56

of working in Australia?

0:25:560:25:57

Could Chantelle really face giving up the career

0:25:570:26:00

she's worked so hard to build? Time to vote.

0:26:000:26:04

Australia!

0:26:040:26:06

-Oh! Hasn't it been a better day than yesterday?

-Definitely.

0:26:060:26:10

A much better day than yesterday.

0:26:100:26:12

And actually yesterday might have been improved if we had today first.

0:26:120:26:16

I think so. Maybe we'll have to do yesterday again.

0:26:160:26:18

Yeah. Can we do yesterday again?

0:26:180:26:21

A resounding vote for Australia has rescued Craig's hopes

0:26:290:26:33

of emigrating even if earning more money means working longer hours.

0:26:330:26:37

But it's his dream of an outdoor family lifestyle

0:26:370:26:40

that's driving his desire to move and if Perth can offer it,

0:26:400:26:44

it would be a big step forward.

0:26:440:26:46

Craig would love to spend lots of time outdoors with his family.

0:26:470:26:51

Unfortunately the UK climate means a lot of time is spent indoors.

0:26:510:26:56

He's hoping to show them Australia could deliver their ideal lifestyle.

0:26:560:27:00

So today, the France-Brothertons have come to the Perth hills

0:27:020:27:05

to get a true taste of the Aussie outdoor life.

0:27:050:27:07

It will also give them time to mull over the decisions they face.

0:27:070:27:11

This is a rare chance to spend time together

0:27:140:27:17

in beautiful outdoor surroundings.

0:27:170:27:19

However, things soon turn ugly!

0:27:190:27:22

You've got to admit, it was fun though.

0:27:430:27:45

-No, it wasn't. I'm freezing!

-Oh!

0:27:450:27:49

This is precisely why Craig wants to emigrate.

0:27:490:27:52

Luckily, the children are on board.

0:27:540:27:57

He's like a big kid, isn't he.

0:27:570:27:59

He loves doing stuff like this.

0:28:000:28:03

He loves going hiking and canoeing,

0:28:030:28:05

and he thinks it's really cool that we can all do it as a family.

0:28:050:28:09

Can I go and capsize him now?

0:28:090:28:11

Today has reminded Craig

0:28:230:28:25

just why he's so desperate to move to Australia.

0:28:250:28:28

It feels so great to be able to get out.

0:28:290:28:32

It's a real stress relief, I feel.

0:28:320:28:34

It gets me down in the UK to stay inside all the time.

0:28:340:28:39

Makes me feel claustrophobic.

0:28:390:28:41

There's nothing wrong with the UK.

0:28:410:28:43

But for me, all my life as a child I'd been able to get outside

0:28:430:28:47

and have this outdoor life all the time.

0:28:470:28:50

However, for Chantelle, enjoying the day with her family

0:28:500:28:54

is a painful reminder of what she stands to lose again.

0:28:540:28:58

Well, I know I was very lonely when I first went to England

0:29:000:29:03

and I left all my friends and family in South Africa.

0:29:030:29:06

And yes, you keep in contact and yes, you talk, but it's not the same.

0:29:060:29:09

It's not the same having people thousands and thousands of miles away.

0:29:090:29:13

They still care about you, but they're thousands and thousands of miles away.

0:29:130:29:18

And I know I'll be lonely when I first come here

0:29:190:29:21

if we choose to come.

0:29:210:29:23

So when it comes to choosing, how will they vote

0:29:240:29:26

after just a little taste of what living in Australia could offer?

0:29:260:29:30

We've had a lovely day in the Perth hills in the great outdoors,

0:29:300:29:34

and now we're going to vote.

0:29:340:29:36

And....vote.

0:29:370:29:39

ALL: Australia.

0:29:390:29:41

-Ah, everyone's going to Australia.

-Yes.

0:29:420:29:45

I don't see how I could have voted otherwise.

0:29:450:29:47

Great.

0:29:470:29:49

The Aussie lifestyle was a real reminder to Craig and Chantelle

0:29:540:29:58

of what they left behind in South Africa,

0:29:580:30:00

but it also gave them a real glimpse of the future they could have Down Under.

0:30:000:30:05

However, with finances looking tight,

0:30:050:30:07

could the benefits of living in Oz come at too high a price?

0:30:070:30:12

Craig and Chantelle bought their house eight years ago

0:30:120:30:15

for just over £100,000.

0:30:150:30:18

After Craig's constant DIY they're hoping for a higher price.

0:30:180:30:22

We sent around two local estate agents to give up-to-date valuations.

0:30:220:30:26

He cleaned his feet. Good boy.

0:30:290:30:31

Lovely blinds. A very stylish fire.

0:30:350:30:38

Good sized room, open-plan leading off the lounge.

0:30:380:30:41

Right, the choice of units now, perhaps,

0:30:440:30:49

five or six years ago would have been acceptable,

0:30:490:30:51

but I think anybody looking at it may want to give it a makeover.

0:30:510:30:55

Open-plan.

0:30:590:31:01

Patio doors. Plenty of light in. Lovely.

0:31:010:31:05

Downstairs bathroom looks like it could be nice when it's finished.

0:31:050:31:10

He's nearly finished.

0:31:100:31:12

-Dad, you're never going to finish that.

-He will finish it.

0:31:140:31:17

It's almost finished now.

0:31:170:31:20

OK, a bit of a work in progress here.

0:31:200:31:22

Oh, he's kind, isn't he Craig?

0:31:220:31:24

This would suit a home office, even a fourth bedroom.

0:31:270:31:30

But I'd recommend the vendors actually finish off

0:31:300:31:33

to make it the finished product because the property will suffer slightly.

0:31:330:31:37

Probably good advice.

0:31:370:31:39

Oh, he's wearing his shoes on my stairs!

0:31:400:31:42

-They'll be in big trouble won't they.

-I'll hunt them down, Tito.

0:31:420:31:48

Nice, pleasantly decorated. Cosy room.

0:31:480:31:53

Number three. Good sized third bedroom.

0:31:540:31:57

That's fairly clean.

0:31:570:31:58

OK, very nice contemporary bathroom.

0:31:580:32:00

-Very stylish and I think people would love this.

-Oh, well done.

0:32:000:32:04

Well done.

0:32:040:32:06

Here we have a very good size three/four flexible

0:32:060:32:09

semi-detached property. If you'd put the property on the market now

0:32:090:32:12

I'd recommend an asking price of £105,000.

0:32:120:32:16

If you wanted to sell it quickly I would keep the price

0:32:170:32:20

under £100,000 and set it at £99,950.

0:32:200:32:24

This is a nicely decorated,

0:32:240:32:26

partially modernised, three bedroom semi-detached house.

0:32:260:32:30

I would value it at approximately £115,000.

0:32:300:32:34

For a quick sale, I would value the property at £105,000.

0:32:340:32:38

I think what they failed to noticed there,

0:32:400:32:43

now that most of the work's finished anyway,

0:32:430:32:46

is that it's a four bedroom house not a three bedroom house.

0:32:460:32:49

-He called it a three bedroom.

-He called it a three bedroom house.

0:32:490:32:52

You're going to have difficulty finding a four bedroom house

0:32:520:32:56

for £120,000, under £120,000 let's put it that way.

0:32:560:32:59

Craig might disagree about how his DIY has affected the house's value,

0:32:590:33:04

but will he be able to argue with the price of living Down Under?

0:33:040:33:07

While the children enjoy the sunshine,

0:33:120:33:15

mum and dad get to compare living costs between the UK and Australia.

0:33:150:33:19

Will this be another blow for Craig's dream?

0:33:190:33:22

Wow, look at the difference there. Hallelujah.

0:33:270:33:31

I'll have to kick my coffee habit.

0:33:310:33:33

Look how much more expensive the potatoes are, Craigie. Ow.

0:33:330:33:37

Ow, ow, ow.

0:33:370:33:40

The everyday expenses come out at £220 more a month

0:33:400:33:44

and that's before they've taken a bigger mortgage into account.

0:33:440:33:47

So, you ready for the next lot? Brace yourself, boy.

0:33:470:33:51

-I'm a bit worried about that.

-Brace yourself.

0:33:510:33:54

They've decided to use the third, most expensive house,

0:33:540:33:58

for their calculations.

0:33:580:34:00

Oh, my God.

0:34:000:34:02

Well, this is quite expensive then. That's triple what we pay.

0:34:040:34:07

That's three times our current mortgage payment.

0:34:070:34:11

That's an extra £1,100 a month just on mortgage payments.

0:34:110:34:15

Is there any chance their Australian salaries can make up

0:34:150:34:18

for these huge outgoings?

0:34:180:34:20

So, it looks like our after-tax monthly income in the UK

0:34:200:34:24

-was £2,900-odd.

-Yes.

0:34:240:34:27

In Australia it looks like our monthly income

0:34:280:34:31

would be about £5,938 after tax.

0:34:310:34:34

That is great news. Their income is more than doubled in Australia.

0:34:370:34:41

The move is back on.

0:34:410:34:43

I'm a little bit happier now.

0:34:430:34:45

You're very much happier, I can see.

0:34:460:34:48

That's really good news.

0:34:510:34:53

The figures do look promising on paper,

0:34:530:34:55

but will Craig and Chantelle have faith in their calculations?

0:34:550:34:58

BOTH: Australia.

0:35:030:35:04

-It's a no-brainer really, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:35:040:35:07

Discovering they could afford the life Craig dreams of

0:35:100:35:13

looks to have made the breakthrough with Chantelle.

0:35:130:35:16

But her biggest fear has always been about losing the things

0:35:160:35:19

that money can't buy.

0:35:190:35:21

The family have decided to watch messages from loved ones together

0:35:210:35:25

so they know just what they'd be leaving behind.

0:35:250:35:28

Hi, Craig. Hi, Chantelle. Hi, children. I hope you're having a fantastic time.

0:35:280:35:33

Hi, guys. The France-Brothertons are unique.

0:35:330:35:37

They're very unique, wonderful people.

0:35:370:35:39

Chantelle is my absolute best friend in the whole wide world.

0:35:390:35:44

Erm, she's the sister I never had.

0:35:440:35:47

Alison is one of the coolest kids I know.

0:35:470:35:52

Roxy's a little miss.

0:35:520:35:54

And Tristan's away with the fairies.

0:35:550:35:58

Obviously, I relate to him very well because we are very similar.

0:35:580:36:02

I'm missing you a hell of a lot and...

0:36:020:36:06

I'm very happy for you and I hope that you know that wherever I am,

0:36:080:36:14

there will always be home for you.

0:36:140:36:17

I don't want to think about it even.

0:36:170:36:19

I can't think about it without crying.

0:36:190:36:22

The kids, it's the kids I'm going to miss terribly.

0:36:220:36:25

I'll miss them as well, but the whole family.

0:36:250:36:28

It's quite wrenching, actually.

0:36:300:36:33

Chantelle, I'll miss you.

0:36:350:36:37

I can't imagine how much I would miss you, but I know now already

0:36:370:36:41

that you are going to leave a big, big hole in my life.

0:36:410:36:44

I know that you and Craig are doing the right thing

0:36:440:36:47

and you're going to be really happy and you'll make it work.

0:36:470:36:50

But never forget how much we love you.

0:36:500:36:53

I know you guys are looking to fulfil a dream.

0:37:020:37:05

It's one that is going to break my heart when you go.

0:37:060:37:10

But I understand why you need to go.

0:37:120:37:14

I'm going to miss you with every fibre of my being.

0:37:150:37:19

Love you lots guys.

0:37:190:37:21

All of you.

0:37:210:37:22

For me, it's the worst bit. It's worse than anything.

0:37:320:37:35

And I love all these people.

0:37:370:37:39

Very, very much.

0:37:410:37:42

I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do without them.

0:37:450:37:48

I know I will if I have to but...

0:37:480:37:52

Mum, I hate leaving people behind.

0:37:550:37:58

I hate leaving people behind too, baby. I do too.

0:37:580:38:02

Watching messages was a reminder of just how painful emigrating can be.

0:38:040:38:08

But if Chantelle can't face leaving the people

0:38:080:38:11

and home she loves it would mean the end to Craig's dream.

0:38:110:38:15

For the second time in their lives,

0:38:150:38:17

the France-Brothertons have to decide where their future lies.

0:38:170:38:20

Their first move from South Africa was under terrible circumstances,

0:38:210:38:25

but this choice won't be any easier.

0:38:250:38:27

Doing this all before, it is quite hard to do it all again, I think.

0:38:280:38:34

But in one way we know what's to come.

0:38:360:38:40

The decision this time is nothing like the decision was last time

0:38:400:38:45

because it's almost as if we didn't have much choice last time...

0:38:450:38:48

..and the decision was made for us.

0:38:500:38:54

All we were doing was prepping towards the move.

0:38:540:38:57

This time I feel like I have a choice.

0:38:580:39:01

It's much harder because it's me doing it this time

0:39:010:39:05

instead of it happening to me.

0:39:050:39:07

So when it comes to the final vote,

0:39:070:39:09

have they seen enough to uproot the family again?

0:39:090:39:11

Based on everything we found out this week we're going to give it

0:39:130:39:17

one final vote as to where we think holds the best future for us.

0:39:170:39:22

We're going to vote for...

0:39:220:39:23

-Australia!

-ALL: Australia!

0:39:280:39:30

Australia.

0:39:300:39:32

I'm very happy that everybody voted Australia. This is fantastic.

0:39:330:39:38

It's a whole new life now. It's, er...

0:39:380:39:41

-Got to start from the beginning again.

-Yeah.

0:39:410:39:43

And build a new life in Australia.

0:39:430:39:45

OK, do you want me to change my vote now?

0:39:450:39:49

In just one week Craig's family have been convinced that Australia

0:39:510:39:55

could give them back the lifestyle they were forced to leave behind.

0:39:550:39:59

The France-Brothertons' time Down Under saw them well and truly

0:40:080:40:12

sold on a life in Australia.

0:40:120:40:14

But did their enthusiasm outlast their suntans?

0:40:150:40:19

Well, a few days ago Chantelle and Craig got in touch to say

0:40:190:40:22

they had some news for us.

0:40:220:40:23

I've come to Donnington to find out exactly what it is.

0:40:230:40:26

-Hello, Chantelle.

-Hello.

-Lovely to meet you.

-And you.

0:40:280:40:31

I understand you've got some news to tell me

0:40:310:40:34

and I've just spotted the sign.

0:40:340:40:36

I do, indeed. Come in and I'll tell you.

0:40:360:40:39

-So, what's happened since you've got back?

-Well, it's all systems go.

0:40:390:40:44

We stayed on for an extra couple of weeks in Australia.

0:40:440:40:48

Craig applied for a job. He got offered it the day after we got back.

0:40:480:40:52

Oh, my goodness! Things have really moved on.

0:40:520:40:55

When does he go to Australia?

0:40:550:40:57

He's leaving the day after tomorrow.

0:40:570:41:00

He's going without us, the kids and I are staying until the end of July,

0:41:000:41:05

after the school year's finished and until the house is sold.

0:41:050:41:08

But, yes, it's all systems go.

0:41:080:41:10

Most people take a year to plan to move Australia.

0:41:100:41:13

You've done it in weeks. We're not talking months, we're talking weeks.

0:41:130:41:16

You must be a very calm person.

0:41:160:41:19

I manage pressure quite well so it'll be all right.

0:41:200:41:23

It'll have to be, won't it!

0:41:230:41:25

You mentioned there's work to be done on this house,

0:41:250:41:28

obviously that is Craig's domain.

0:41:280:41:30

He's done a huge amount of work over the last three weeks.

0:41:300:41:33

He has worked his little socks off, he has.

0:41:330:41:36

He had to finish the bathroom, the downstairs bathroom,

0:41:360:41:39

which has been an ongoing, long-term project.

0:41:390:41:43

He's done an absolutely super job.

0:41:430:41:45

He's in the back at the moment sorting out all his tools

0:41:450:41:48

he's got to take with him.

0:41:480:41:50

-And has he packed his clothes or anything yet?

-No.

0:41:500:41:53

And he goes in a day and a half?

0:41:530:41:54

Look at him - hard at work.

0:41:540:41:58

-It's all rather exciting, isn't it, you moving in 48 hours.

-Yes.

0:41:580:42:04

Did you ever envisage this move was going to be quite so quick?

0:42:040:42:08

No, definitely not. I thought we had at least a good few months.

0:42:080:42:12

So when do you actually start your new job?

0:42:120:42:16

It's just over a week's time.

0:42:160:42:18

That's going to be a bit scary.

0:42:180:42:21

But I think I'll do quite well out there.

0:42:210:42:24

It's definitely what I want to do and it's an exciting opportunity.

0:42:240:42:30

So, in a way, it's the best case scenario for you.

0:42:300:42:32

-You've got what you wanted.

-Yeah.

0:42:320:42:34

But you're going to be working hard in Australia

0:42:340:42:37

getting everything ready for when they come out, aren't you?

0:42:370:42:41

-Yes, baby. The answer's yes.

-The answer's yes, believe you me!

0:42:410:42:45

We're absolutely delighted you're going to make the move.

0:42:450:42:48

I don't think we quite expected it to be this soon.

0:42:480:42:50

So Craig, all the best with your new job next week when you start.

0:42:500:42:53

Exciting times.

0:42:530:42:55

And Chantelle, you've got an awful lot of work to do

0:42:550:42:58

here in the UK before you get on that plane.

0:42:580:43:00

One last thing, Craig, please don't move again.
