I love my garden and what I grow in it.

0:00:160:00:18

But this year I've had a new-found envy for allotments.

0:00:180:00:22

This is a double allotment.

0:00:230:00:25

But it's got beans and it's got peas and potatoes.

0:00:250:00:29

It's got onions, fruit, everything.

0:00:290:00:32

It is just such a beautiful place.

0:00:320:00:34

And the room to do things properly.

0:00:340:00:37

There's so much grown on these allotments.

0:00:370:00:39

People of all ages are enjoying growing their veg here.

0:00:390:00:42

Olga and her two children, Penelope and Alexander,

0:00:420:00:45

have their own patch growing all sorts of produce.

0:00:450:00:48

So how long have you had this allotment?

0:00:480:00:52

This is my second summer.

0:00:520:00:54

And it was an allotment or...?

0:00:540:00:56

-It was a dump.

-SHE LAUGHS

0:00:560:01:00

-It was a tip. It was overgrown.

-Found a worm.

0:01:000:01:02

-Leave the worm. Worms are good.

-We love worms.

0:01:020:01:05

'I want to cook a rich and thick tomato and garlic dish.

0:01:060:01:11

'Everything I'm cooking with has been grown on this allotment.'

0:01:110:01:15

-Are you fussy about vegetables?

-No, he's the fussy eater.

0:01:180:01:22

What vegetables do you like?

0:01:220:01:24

Nice cutting.

0:01:240:01:25

Thank you.

0:01:250:01:27

Um... Yeah, tomato.

0:01:270:01:29

What herbs have you got here?

0:01:290:01:31

We've got some sage and we've got some rosemary.

0:01:310:01:34

-Oh, some rosemary.

-Yep.

0:01:340:01:36

Do you know where the rosemary is?

0:01:360:01:37

-Here.

-Yep.

0:01:370:01:39

Can I nick a bit of rosemary?

0:01:390:01:40

Do you want to pick some of the tops of the stalks?

0:01:400:01:43

And put them in there?

0:01:430:01:44

Well, let's see what Nigel's going to do.

0:01:440:01:46

'It's great to see the children enjoying this place,

0:01:460:01:49

'and they really get stuck in seeing the seeds they've planted

0:01:490:01:53

'grow into wonderful produce

0:01:530:01:55

'and then eating it.'

0:01:550:01:57

This is the first year that we've had proper crops

0:01:580:02:01

and they've been part of the process from the beginning,

0:02:010:02:05

from the planting, from the watering.

0:02:050:02:08

So they saw the seeds go in?

0:02:080:02:10

They're seeing it through, yeah.

0:02:100:02:12

That's what's making it interesting for them.

0:02:120:02:14

I'm just going to cut this up into very small bits.

0:02:140:02:20

That one has lots.

0:02:200:02:21

Yeah, and you see, that's actually quite spiky when you eat it.

0:02:210:02:25

But if you cut it up, then all you get is the flavour.

0:02:250:02:28

Eugh.

0:02:280:02:31

Oh, that smells lovely.

0:02:330:02:35

Mummy, if I like this, one day can you cook it?

0:02:350:02:39

-Yes.

-I know it sounds odd,

0:02:390:02:42

but I want to put a little bit of cream in there

0:02:420:02:44

because I just think with those juices...

0:02:440:02:47

I mean, we'll see.

0:02:470:02:48

'In the pan, I have olive oil, tomatoes, rosemary,

0:02:480:02:52

'garlic and a little cream.'

0:02:520:02:53

The cream mixes with the juices from the tomato

0:02:530:02:57

and you just get a completely different flavour.

0:02:570:02:59

Yum, yum.

0:02:590:03:00

The cream mixed up with that thing, it looks like caramel.

0:03:000:03:07

It's something you could have on the side with some meat,

0:03:070:03:12

or you could dump it on top of rice.

0:03:120:03:15

Let it cool down.

0:03:150:03:19

Mmm.

0:03:220:03:23

I agree. Oops! Mine fell.

0:03:230:03:27

-Mummy?

-Yep?

0:03:270:03:29

You know I don't really like that meat thing for the pasta.

0:03:290:03:35

I would like you to cook this instead.

0:03:350:03:38

You mean this instead of bolognese?

0:03:380:03:39

OK, we'll do this instead of bolognese.

0:03:390:03:42

-Mmm.

-Yes?

0:03:440:03:45

Mm-hm, yes.

0:03:450:03:47

May I have some more?

0:03:470:03:49

NIGEL LAUGHS You certainly can. Just tuck in.
