If you're critically ill or seriously injured,

0:00:030:00:05

seconds count and in Britain's biggest county,

0:00:050:00:09

you can be a long way from help.

0:00:090:00:11

-Where's the patient?

-I'm stuck under the car!

0:00:110:00:14

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance flies at 150 miles an hour

0:00:140:00:17

and thanks to its speed, hundreds of patients

0:00:170:00:19

are alive today, saved by a highly-skilled team

0:00:190:00:22

of doctors and paramedics.

0:00:220:00:25

-Stand clear, everybody.

-Keep going, mate!

0:00:250:00:27

It covers some of the UK's most rugged landscapes,

0:00:270:00:31

turning roadsides into operating theatres.

0:00:310:00:34

We're going to pop him off to sleep with an emergency anaesthetic.

0:00:340:00:37

And town centres into helipads.

0:00:370:00:39

-Is that it on the left?

-Just behind you, Tim.

0:00:390:00:42

And every day, the Helimed team's skill

0:00:420:00:44

speed and courage is saving lives.

0:00:440:00:47

Today on Helicopter Heroes...

0:00:560:00:58

A teenage motorcyclist is badly injured after a head-on crash.

0:00:580:01:02

-We've lost sensation completely from nipple down.

-OK.

0:01:020:01:05

My son did a head-on crash with him. This is the result at the moment.

0:01:050:01:09

A loved-up couple fall head over heels down a hill.

0:01:090:01:13

-Everyone's been calling us Humpty-Dumpty...

-Jack and Jill.

0:01:130:01:16

A schoolgirl's game of dare ends in A&E.

0:01:160:01:20

I brought the paramedic to the woods and we could hear screaming.

0:01:200:01:23

And a rider is crushed, when his horse falls on him.

0:01:230:01:27

You think they're going to get up off you, but he was laid on me.

0:01:270:01:31

In a serious road accident,

0:01:360:01:38

some people simply walk away with only cuts and bruises,

0:01:380:01:41

others suffer injuries which may change lives forever.

0:01:410:01:45

The Helimed crews have to be prepared for anything.

0:01:450:01:49

It's a Sunday morning and a family of bikers

0:01:520:01:54

is caught up in a terrible accident

0:01:540:01:57

near the market town of Northallerton.

0:01:570:01:59

Helimed 98 has been scrambled by ground paramedics,

0:01:590:02:02

concerned about the condition of their teenage patient.

0:02:020:02:06

James Vine and Sam Burgess will take over his care.

0:02:060:02:09

Clear to the left, no wires, no obstacles.

0:02:090:02:12

Keep it on the top there, because it's a bit slow to get down there.

0:02:120:02:16

-OK, then, mate. Let's go.

-Yeah, good to go.

0:02:160:02:19

I think they're going to be working quickly,

0:02:190:02:21

he's already packaged, just tee James Cook up for me already, mate?

0:02:210:02:24

19-year-old Nick Kane is conscious,

0:02:240:02:26

but has no feeling or movement from the chest down.

0:02:260:02:29

-Hi, Nick.

-We found him helmet on, face down, visor smashed.

0:02:290:02:33

-OK.

-We managed to roll him, because his airway was compromised.

0:02:330:02:36

-OK.

-He's actually in no pain at all.

0:02:360:02:39

-Brilliant.

-But we've lost sensation completely from nipple down.

0:02:390:02:43

He can't squeeze, can't feel anything.

0:02:430:02:45

-No worries.

-We've had a full top-to-toe survey...

0:02:450:02:48

Nothing on primary. I'll listen before we get him on the aircraft.

0:02:480:02:51

Big deep breaths in for me, pal.

0:02:510:02:52

-Uh-huh.

-Big deep breath.

-I'm trying.

0:02:520:02:56

OK, mate.

0:02:560:02:57

Nick was out riding with his dad and brother

0:02:570:03:00

when he was in a head-on collision with an oncoming car.

0:03:000:03:03

They saw it all.

0:03:030:03:05

He cleared the car and I thought, "Thank God he's cleared the car

0:03:050:03:08

"and he hasn't hit that."

0:03:080:03:09

And then I saw him hit the floor, where he started to roll out

0:03:090:03:12

and I was conscious that I was so close, I was catching up so quick,

0:03:120:03:16

I was actually going to ride over him,

0:03:160:03:19

but I managed to get into the guttering and pull over.

0:03:190:03:21

OK, when did you last have anything to eat or drink?

0:03:210:03:24

Er... Half-eleven, I had Weetabix.

0:03:240:03:27

-Just Weetabix, anything else?

-No.

-Good lad.

0:03:270:03:31

While we get him strapped, I'll have a quick feel of everything.

0:03:310:03:35

Feel here, pal, any pain?

0:03:350:03:37

-Can't feel my legs.

-OK. Feel me touching you here?

0:03:370:03:40

-No.

-Here?

-Yeah.

-Feel it there?

-Uh-huh.

-OK.

0:03:400:03:44

He seems to lose sensation from about here.

0:03:440:03:48

Obvious deficit from T4, mate.

0:03:480:03:52

While Nick is fully conscious and calm,

0:03:520:03:55

the lack of sensation in his lower body is alarming.

0:03:550:03:59

Nothing else on primary, had a quick listen to his chest,

0:03:590:04:01

he's got poor entry bilaterally.

0:04:010:04:04

Nothing of note, he has got air entry.

0:04:040:04:09

Right, as many hands as we can, please.

0:04:100:04:12

Can I borrow you? Are you the police officer?

0:04:120:04:15

Just borrow you for a lift, mate?

0:04:150:04:17

Because he's numb from the chest down,

0:04:170:04:20

there's a risk he has other injuries that he cannot feel.

0:04:200:04:23

Paramedics need to gather photos of the crash scene

0:04:260:04:29

to show waiting surgeons,

0:04:290:04:31

so they are clear on the type of accident Nick was involved in.

0:04:310:04:34

We're going to be lifting to James Cook in the next ten minutes.

0:04:340:04:39

Paramedic James tries not to worry his patient,

0:04:390:04:42

he's distracting Nick and trying to keep him upbeat.

0:04:420:04:45

Nick, how we doing, pal?

0:04:450:04:47

-All right. Nothing I can do, really.

-Not to worry, pal.

0:04:470:04:51

I just wish I had feeling in my body and I could move.

0:04:510:04:53

No, don't be daft, mate, we'll get you all squared away, mate.

0:04:530:04:56

-Nick, what I'm going to do is pop a bit of oxygen on, pal.

-Right.

0:04:560:04:59

It's just until we get you to hospital, OK?

0:04:590:05:02

Just a wee bit of fresh air, mate, just smells a bit funny.

0:05:020:05:06

James knows his dad is also worried.

0:05:060:05:09

Do you want to quickly jump up, just give him a quick kiss?

0:05:090:05:13

-You must be joking!

-Absolutely not. We believe in love on this ambulance!

0:05:130:05:18

I won't be that far behind you, you'll get there quicker than me.

0:05:180:05:22

Dad, we'll see you soon, we'll look after him, don't worry.

0:05:220:05:25

-Thanks.

-All right. We'll see you soon.

0:05:250:05:28

-Clear right, clear of the trees.

-Cheers.

0:05:280:05:31

Clear left.

0:05:310:05:33

It's a short flight to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

0:05:330:05:37

What started out as a family ride out on his bike

0:05:370:05:40

has ended in potentially life-changing injuries.

0:05:400:05:45

The people who are most likely to become patients

0:05:520:05:55

of the air ambulance are always among its biggest fundraisers.

0:05:550:05:59

None more so than those who love to ride horses.

0:05:590:06:02

It's payback time for Yorkshire's amateur jockeys.

0:06:050:06:08

Today they're taking part in a point-to-point race

0:06:080:06:11

to raise money for the Helimed team.

0:06:110:06:13

Please, if you've got a very tired horse out in the country,

0:06:130:06:16

we don't want to see the head pushed off 'em.

0:06:160:06:18

For organisers like Bob Woodhouse,

0:06:180:06:21

it's a cause close to his heart, for good reason.

0:06:210:06:24

We are travelling just east of Malton,

0:06:260:06:29

which is North Yorkshire, where somebody has fallen off a horse

0:06:290:06:32

and we believe they've been crushed by the horse, from the fall.

0:06:320:06:36

-Good morning, you all right?

-A 64-year-old gentleman...

0:06:360:06:40

Bob is badly hurt. He was riding one of his horses

0:06:400:06:43

on the family farm when it shied,

0:06:430:06:45

-fell and crushed him.

-Hiya, Bob.

0:06:450:06:48

-The horse has reared up, he's come off the back of it.

-All right.

0:06:480:06:51

It landed almost here, but the horse landed on top of him.

0:06:510:06:54

Landed mainly across here

0:06:540:06:56

and in the saddle's dug right into his groin here.

0:06:560:06:59

-That's where I hurt.

-Right, OK.

0:06:590:07:01

We were phoning the bank, because we've just moved in,

0:07:010:07:03

emptying boxes and things and we heard these screams and shouts

0:07:030:07:06

and my daughter and I ran over here,

0:07:060:07:08

to see if we could help. At first we thought we could pull the horse off

0:07:080:07:12

because the horse was still on top of him,

0:07:120:07:14

but then, we just got the phone and rang the ambulance.

0:07:140:07:18

When he landed... Like, normally,

0:07:180:07:22

you think they're going to get up off you, but he was laid on me.

0:07:220:07:25

You know when you're winded, how all the wind is out of you...

0:07:250:07:29

He's got on the horse and he's just gone to walk away

0:07:290:07:32

from the stables and he's gone to tighten it's girth up

0:07:320:07:36

and it just reared up, run backwards and flipped itself over

0:07:360:07:40

and just laid on him.

0:07:400:07:42

Bob has no visible signs of injury,

0:07:420:07:44

but crash victims can suffer multiple fractures

0:07:440:07:47

and internal bleeding.

0:07:470:07:50

Keep going with that gas, Bob, because once it wears off, you'll be back to square one again.

0:07:500:07:54

You're better to keep taking it, because it does wear off quick.

0:07:540:07:58

-I've got pins and needles down my leg.

-OK.

0:07:580:08:01

It could be the way you're laid and also because you've hurt your groin,

0:08:010:08:05

you're probably holding yourself stiff to protect what's hurting.

0:08:050:08:09

We'll get you some pain relief in

0:08:090:08:11

and we're going to pop a little brace around your hips, OK?

0:08:110:08:14

No, no, you're all right.

0:08:140:08:16

Bob has a suspected fractured pelvis,

0:08:160:08:19

but he is refusing more pain relief.

0:08:190:08:21

You don't want some pain relief, why what's wrong?

0:08:210:08:23

No, I'm all right, don't give me pain relief.

0:08:230:08:25

-For what reason?

-I want to feel what's wrong with me.

0:08:250:08:28

You don't have to, that's what I'm trying to say.

0:08:280:08:31

He's a tough guy, like, he won't take painkillers. He can deal with pain.

0:08:310:08:37

The only reason I'm thinking, because when we start moving you

0:08:370:08:40

and putting you on this board, we can make you sort of pain-free,

0:08:400:08:43

comfortable, but you need to let us give it to you.

0:08:430:08:46

-Obviously I can't, if you tell me you don't.

-All right.

0:08:460:08:49

It works quick...

0:08:490:08:53

Bob finally decides to have morphine, to relieve the pain.

0:08:530:08:57

Once it takes effect, the team can conduct a full assessment

0:08:570:09:01

of his injuries and prepare him for flight.

0:09:010:09:05

Right, while we've got that exposed, take a big deep breath in for me.

0:09:050:09:08

BOB INHALES AND EXHALES

0:09:080:09:11

Bob could well have a back injury,

0:09:110:09:14

so they need to fit a brace to his neck.

0:09:140:09:17

So, we'll treat everything for the worst

0:09:170:09:19

and hopefully it'll not be required.

0:09:190:09:21

My dad's chairman of the Yorkshire Point-to-Point Association,

0:09:210:09:25

and every year, they raise money for the air ambulance

0:09:250:09:29

as one of their main charity beneficiaries,

0:09:290:09:33

now he's getting a bit of benefit from it!

0:09:330:09:35

Bob's years of fundraising for the air ambulance is paying off,

0:09:350:09:39

because without this chopper, it would be a very long

0:09:390:09:42

and uncomfortable ride by road to hospital.

0:09:420:09:44

It's really the time factor.

0:09:440:09:46

We've got a lot of bumpy roads round the countryside as well,

0:09:460:09:49

so it'd be more comfortable for Bob, rather than going over the bumps.

0:09:490:09:52

We've got about 40 minutes or so, driving to hospital from here,

0:09:520:09:55

the helicopter can do it in probably ten minutes or so, I'm guessing.

0:09:550:10:00

It's going to be better for Bob. The quicker he gets there, the quicker he gets X-rays,

0:10:000:10:03

the quicker he gets definitive treatment.

0:10:030:10:05

It'll be some time before Bob's back on the saddle.

0:10:070:10:10

His injuries are serious. They include multiple fractures

0:10:100:10:13

to his pelvis. He's laid up for months.

0:10:130:10:16

But by the time this year's fundraising race comes round,

0:10:240:10:27

Bob's back in form and he's determined to play his part

0:10:270:10:30

in making sure today's point-to-point pays out

0:10:300:10:33

for the air ambulance that raced to his aid that day.

0:10:330:10:37

I was sat on him, waiting for my son to come out of the stable

0:10:370:10:41

with the other horse and all of a sudden, he put his head down,

0:10:410:10:45

shook his head and then he ran backwards for about 20 yards,

0:10:450:10:50

as fast as he could and just flipped straight over on top of me.

0:10:500:10:53

He didn't give me a chance.

0:10:530:10:55

Never worked out the reason why he did it.

0:10:550:10:57

He had a bit of a temperament problem, probably that was it,

0:10:570:11:01

but it wasn't very nice on the day.

0:11:010:11:04

He actually laid on me for ages, 30 seconds something like that,

0:11:060:11:11

and I knew then, when I was laid there,

0:11:110:11:14

that I couldn't feel my legs and I thought something was serious here.

0:11:140:11:19

Bob's injuries were far worse than first thought.

0:11:220:11:26

Well, my pelvis was basically smashed.

0:11:260:11:29

It was broke in three places

0:11:290:11:32

and a part of my pelvis bone had dropped because of the way it broke.

0:11:320:11:37

I wasn't very good for about three weeks!

0:11:370:11:41

I would say that I'm 100% fit now,

0:11:460:11:48

I'm actually back riding horse, which is a thing,

0:11:480:11:52

when I was laid in hospital, I didn't think I would be able to do.

0:11:520:11:55

I don't think I'll be breaking any more young horses in.

0:11:550:11:59

These point-to-point races raise thousands

0:11:590:12:01

for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance each year

0:12:010:12:03

and it's a cause now even closer to Bob's heart.

0:12:030:12:07

From car crashes, to hikers with broken ankles

0:12:170:12:20

or fallen horse riders, many of the Helimed team's cases

0:12:200:12:23

are almost routine.

0:12:230:12:25

But sometimes, a bizarre accident comes the paramedics' way.

0:12:250:12:31

With years of medical service under their belts,

0:12:310:12:33

paramedics Dave Appleby and Pete Vallance

0:12:330:12:36

are not easily surprised, but today's mission sounds unusual.

0:12:360:12:40

We've had reports of a male and a female

0:12:400:12:43

who've fallen from a 12-foot wall.

0:12:430:12:45

We're not sure of any other details at the moment,

0:12:450:12:47

but we're told that we're going for the male person

0:12:470:12:51

who appears to have spinal injuries and damage to his pelvis.

0:12:510:12:56

The two casualties are in Hawes,

0:12:560:12:59

a popular location for hikers and climbers.

0:12:590:13:02

Helimed 98 has been here many times before.

0:13:020:13:06

Not a huge number of choices around here, is there?

0:13:060:13:08

They normally come through that gate,

0:13:080:13:10

-so that's access for ambulances.

-Okily-dokily.

0:13:100:13:14

The couple are Graham Scott and Claire Alderson.

0:13:140:13:17

These lovebirds were fooling around near a wall

0:13:170:13:20

at the top of the bank when they fell.

0:13:200:13:22

Luckily, paramedics have been joined by Swaledale Mountain Rescue.

0:13:220:13:26

-Two people sat on the wall...

-Right.

0:13:260:13:28

And they've literally knocked each other off.

0:13:280:13:30

One's fallen onto the other and one has got a lower leg injury,

0:13:300:13:34

the other is more serious. They're looking at that at the moment.

0:13:340:13:37

We've got an extra patient route out and back round...

0:13:370:13:40

Do you know if they've used a board on them yet?

0:13:400:13:43

Getting Graham and Claire to safety is going to be a challenge.

0:13:430:13:48

So, the route you've planned, you'll be to get them out on a board, yeah?

0:13:480:13:52

-Hello.

-Hi, guys.

0:13:520:13:57

Land ambulance crews, as well as the fire brigade are also on scene.

0:13:570:14:01

Getting the couple back up this slope

0:14:010:14:03

will require every pair of available hands.

0:14:030:14:06

Is that the best way to come down?

0:14:060:14:08

He's got himself in a right position there, hasn't he?

0:14:080:14:12

He was dangling his girlfriend over and they both come over.

0:14:120:14:15

He came bouncing down here and smashed his spine.

0:14:150:14:17

He's got no pins and needles or neurological difficulties,

0:14:170:14:20

but he's got quite a lot of tenderness around the spine itself.

0:14:200:14:23

Right. The lumbar area.

0:14:230:14:26

Graham is not only red-faced, but he's also got a few more injuries

0:14:260:14:30

after he tumbled down the hill and hit a tree.

0:14:300:14:32

We've got potential there for causing

0:14:320:14:34

significant injury falling down.

0:14:340:14:37

It's quite a rocky bank, as well.

0:14:370:14:39

It's not something you come across every day,

0:14:390:14:41

particularly for the fact there's two casualties down there as well,

0:14:410:14:45

rather than one.

0:14:450:14:47

So, yeah, I suppose they're lucky that the bank wasn't any longer

0:14:470:14:52

and that they were in a position where people actually seen them,

0:14:520:14:55

witnessed the fall, otherwise it could have been a lot worse

0:14:550:14:58

than it looks to have turned out.

0:14:580:15:01

My partner picked me up and jokingly hung me over the wall

0:15:010:15:05

and then we both went over somehow.

0:15:050:15:09

When we get him down to the bottom, we'll put him on the ground again,

0:15:090:15:12

just till we get ourselves organised.

0:15:120:15:14

You go back to the wall and we'll put him straight down.

0:15:140:15:16

The Swaledale Mountain Rescue team is made up of volunteers

0:15:160:15:20

and working in this type of terrain, they never know what's coming next.

0:15:200:15:24

The stretcher's out at the end there.

0:15:240:15:27

Slow as you want, lads.

0:15:270:15:30

You come across all sorts, you'd be surprised how unusual they get.

0:15:300:15:33

Falling off a wall, that's one of the worst ones.

0:15:330:15:37

Lower leg injuries.

0:15:370:15:39

We've got a possible spinal injury as well.

0:15:390:15:44

-Everybody all right?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:15:440:15:47

While Graham is transported to the helicopter,

0:15:470:15:49

the mountain rescue team will now get Claire to the ambulance.

0:15:490:15:53

-Hiya. You all right?

-Hello there.

0:15:530:15:55

It's Dave, I'm one of the paramedics with the air ambulance.

0:15:550:15:59

Hiya.

0:15:590:16:00

Just to let you know that we're bringing a 35-year-old gentleman in,

0:16:000:16:05

who's fallen off a wall down a steep embankment.

0:16:050:16:08

We heard very little about the story,

0:16:080:16:10

but it does seem quite an unusual job.

0:16:100:16:14

From our point of view, the end task is exactly the same,

0:16:140:16:16

it's somebody in a difficult location that needs treatment and extraction.

0:16:160:16:20

Clear left down there.

0:16:200:16:21

The roads around the town of Hawes are winding and sometimes uneven.

0:16:210:16:25

Graham's injuries are potentially serious,

0:16:250:16:28

so he's been flown for treatment.

0:16:280:16:31

The couple is taken to hospital in Harrogate.

0:16:310:16:33

Claire is allowed home at the end of the day,

0:16:330:16:36

but Graham is kept in for observation.

0:16:360:16:39

For the next week, the couple find

0:16:390:16:41

they're the talk of the Dales after their accident

0:16:410:16:44

is featured in the local paper, it's picked up by the tabloids

0:16:440:16:48

and it's a while before they're happy to relive the day

0:16:480:16:51

they fell for each other in entirely the wrong way.

0:16:510:16:55

We're on the way home from shopping,

0:16:550:16:57

we got up here and she decided to call us 'Fatty'.

0:16:570:16:59

I said, "Right, I'm going to chuck you over that wall,"

0:16:590:17:02

just as a joke, like a joke.

0:17:020:17:04

I picked her up and as I got near the wall, I slipped

0:17:040:17:06

and she tumbled down over the wall, had hold of my neck still,

0:17:060:17:09

pulled me over at the same time and then rolled

0:17:090:17:12

the rest of the way down into the tree, hit my spine off the tree.

0:17:120:17:15

They both came over, he came bouncing down and he smashed his spine here.

0:17:150:17:19

Graham suffered a long list of cuts and bruises to his back,

0:17:190:17:22

legs, ribs and arms, but no broken bones.

0:17:220:17:25

Claire chipped a bone in her ankle. Instead of receiving sympathy,

0:17:250:17:29

the couple have become the subject of local gossip.

0:17:290:17:31

Everyone's been calling us Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill...

0:17:310:17:34

Jack and Jill, fell down the hill...

0:17:340:17:37

It's a lesson in love the couple will never forget.

0:17:370:17:42

I cried my eyes out, worried about Claire at the same time.

0:17:420:17:45

In case anything had happened, because I didn't know what was going on with Claire.

0:17:450:17:49

I just knew she'd hurt her foot and that was it, that's all I got told.

0:17:490:17:52

-A thing never to do again.

-Never.

-Never pick her up near a wall.

-No.

0:17:520:17:57

Yorkshire's open countryside is the perfect training ground

0:17:590:18:02

to the British Army.

0:18:020:18:04

You will often see tanks and hear the crack of gunfire

0:18:040:18:06

as soldiers prepare to be sent to war zones.

0:18:060:18:10

But you don't have to be under fire to get hurt.

0:18:100:18:13

There's snow on them there hills. Cold in them there hills.

0:18:140:18:19

Helimed 98 is on its way to Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall,

0:18:190:18:23

near York. It's an Army training base.

0:18:230:18:26

We've been tasked to a detail to the north of York.

0:18:260:18:30

It's one of the Army bases in the area.

0:18:300:18:34

There've been reports that a male has fallen

0:18:340:18:38

approximately 20 foot through a roof. He's complaining of pain in his back.

0:18:380:18:42

This is familiar terrain for paramedic Sam,

0:18:420:18:44

who has toured Afghanistan with the TA.

0:18:440:18:47

I know Strensall barracks, it's one of the main barracks

0:18:470:18:51

for the Army medical services.

0:18:510:18:53

So, I've done quite a lot of training there with the TA,

0:18:530:18:56

and we did that on pre-deployment before Afghanistan last year,

0:18:560:19:00

at the hospital trainer there,

0:19:000:19:02

so I've spent many a happy weekend loitering in Strensall.

0:19:020:19:07

Ah! I've got the ambulance, on the nose, see the woods? Tucked in.

0:19:070:19:11

-Yeah.

-On the nose. Right-hand side.

0:19:110:19:16

Pilot Andy Lister, a Navy veteran, knows the sound of gunfire, too.

0:19:160:19:20

You don't want to trust a medic with a pistol, mate.

0:19:200:19:23

If you hear things cracking off the aeroplane, pull up.

0:19:230:19:26

On the ground, they find a squaddie has fallen victim

0:19:260:19:29

to the icy conditions and slipped from the top of a bunker

0:19:290:19:33

-during a training exercise.

-Hello.

0:19:330:19:36

All right, mate.

0:19:360:19:38

This is Carl. He's slipped off here, the top of here.

0:19:380:19:45

Landed straight on his back.

0:19:450:19:47

Instant pain, almost, just below his shoulder blades, centrally, all the way down

0:19:470:19:52

to just above his coccyx. Eight out of ten, he scored it.

0:19:520:19:55

All the obs we've done are fine.

0:19:550:19:58

This soldier may be used to using guns, but his big fear is needles.

0:19:580:20:02

A problem, as paramedics need to give him pain relief.

0:20:020:20:05

If you're really, really afraid of needles.

0:20:050:20:07

we can give you something called Oramorph.

0:20:070:20:10

Basically, it's morphine, but you drink it.

0:20:100:20:12

It's not quite as strong as the IV stuff.

0:20:120:20:14

I'd rather drink it.

0:20:140:20:15

You'd rather drink it? No worries.

0:20:150:20:18

He's not got any neurological deficits,

0:20:180:20:20

which basically means he's got no strange feelings or sensations

0:20:200:20:24

in any of the extremities after the fall.

0:20:240:20:26

But he is complaining of quite severe central back pain,

0:20:260:20:28

so it could indicate he's got a fracture there somewhere.

0:20:280:20:31

But we're not going to know until we've had him X-rayed at hospital.

0:20:310:20:35

It's well below freezing,

0:20:350:20:36

and the patient needs to be carried to the chopper quickly.

0:20:360:20:39

There's no shortage of manpower.

0:20:390:20:41

Right. On you, then, Mark.

0:20:410:20:43

Lifting on three then. One, two, three.

0:20:450:20:47

All right? Everybody at a comfortable height?

0:20:500:20:53

His back pain could be something serious,

0:20:550:20:57

but until it is properly X-rayed,

0:20:570:20:59

it's vital to keep the patient as still as possible.

0:20:590:21:03

Right guys, head towards the other lunatic in an orange suit,

0:21:030:21:06

and then he'll tell you how to load on.

0:21:060:21:09

We've been very fortunate.

0:21:090:21:11

We've flown into the middle of a Royal Signals unit

0:21:110:21:14

that are doing some range practice.

0:21:140:21:16

So we've had plenty of lads to help us with the lifting and carrying.

0:21:160:21:20

Just feed him in, guys.

0:21:200:21:22

Nicely done.

0:21:220:21:23

He's not in camouflage today,

0:21:230:21:25

but paramedic Sam is only too pleased to help a fellow soldier.

0:21:250:21:29

From the not so hostile terrain of North Yorkshire,

0:21:290:21:32

to hospital in York will be a quick, five-minute flight,

0:21:320:21:36

and after a thorough medical,

0:21:360:21:38

this injured soldier will soon be back on duty.

0:21:380:21:41

Teenagers are renowned for their willingness to take risks,

0:21:450:21:48

not all of them sensible.

0:21:480:21:50

And a dare can often lead to an accident.

0:21:500:21:53

Helimed 99 is circling woods in South Yorkshire,

0:21:550:21:58

where a schoolgirl has been injured in a serious fall.

0:21:580:22:01

The RRV is query fractured pelvis and a fractured wrist.

0:22:030:22:06

But finding their patient is proving difficult.

0:22:080:22:11

I can't see any response cars out.

0:22:110:22:14

Roger. Apparently, they've sent someone up in a blue T-shirt.

0:22:140:22:18

I know it's going to be hard for you to spot the blue T-shirt,

0:22:180:22:20

but that is someone that's been sent up to a field nearby. Over.

0:22:200:22:24

Are you the chap we are looking for?

0:22:260:22:28

The girl fell from this water pipe, into a stream.

0:22:290:22:33

She has a suspected broken arm,

0:22:330:22:35

but local paramedics fear she could have other, more serious injuries.

0:22:350:22:38

So, the reason I asked for you guys, obviously, was the situation.

0:22:380:22:42

We don't have any crews available at all.

0:22:420:22:44

Initially with the pelvic, I was concerned about that.

0:22:440:22:46

Teenager Misha Robinson is in a lot of pain.

0:22:460:22:49

There is no movement in the pelvis or anything like that.

0:22:490:22:53

She was playing dare with her mates when she lost her balance.

0:22:530:22:56

-So how have you landed on the floor?

-I think I landed on my bum.

0:22:560:23:00

You think you landed on your bum. OK.

0:23:000:23:03

Misha landed in the river,

0:23:030:23:05

but people living nearby soon heard her cries for help.

0:23:050:23:08

Could hear her screaming.

0:23:080:23:10

Luckily we were both in, we were both on the back garden,

0:23:100:23:13

and as I say, I brought the paramedic round the woods,

0:23:130:23:17

and as I say, we found her here.

0:23:170:23:18

If you had to score it out of ten,

0:23:210:23:22

ten being the worst pain you could imagine...

0:23:220:23:25

Ten on my arm and seven on my back.

0:23:250:23:27

-We'll give you a bit of oxygen, see if we can get another needle in.

-No!

0:23:270:23:31

Before paramedics can move Misha, she needs pain relief,

0:23:310:23:34

but she is frightened of needles.

0:23:340:23:36

-If you say you really don't want it.

-I don't want it.

-That's fine.

0:23:360:23:40

Got some help, Tony.

0:23:400:23:42

The team is concerned Misha may have injured her back in the fall.

0:23:420:23:46

She'll be strapped to a spinal stretcher, as a precaution.

0:23:460:23:49

Right, so just going to give you a couple of mls, which is not a lot.

0:23:490:23:52

So you just pop that in your mouth.

0:23:520:23:53

And there's needle-free pain relief.

0:23:530:23:55

It's going to have to take effect, before they can move Misha.

0:23:550:23:59

-So which wrist is hurting, sweetheart?

-This one.

0:23:590:24:02

Let's have a quick look at it.

0:24:020:24:05

-Oh, it hurts.

-It's hurting a lot, is it?

-Yes.

0:24:050:24:08

Trouble is, as soon as you touch it, she's in agony.

0:24:080:24:11

So, shall we give you a few breaths of this, gas and air,

0:24:110:24:13

while I put this splint on?

0:24:130:24:15

Misha's being given Entonox, pain-killing gas.

0:24:150:24:19

You keep doing that. You can't take too much of it.

0:24:190:24:22

It's a modern version of laughing gas.

0:24:220:24:24

I'm just going to lift your hand up slightly.

0:24:240:24:27

And Misha shows why.

0:24:270:24:30

I was looking for some leaves.

0:24:300:24:31

That's it, leaves and frogs and stuff.

0:24:310:24:33

She's soon giggling through the pain of her broken wrist.

0:24:330:24:36

Now, it's important that you try and help us, right.

0:24:360:24:39

Us lot are going to move you, OK, so you just sit here.

0:24:390:24:42

Shortly, you're going to feel a board coming behind your back,

0:24:420:24:45

-and we're just going to lay you down on this board.

-OK.

0:24:450:24:47

What we're going to do, Misha, is lay you back

0:24:470:24:49

-gently on to this board behind you, all right?

-OK.

0:24:490:24:51

OK. Just try and relax as best you can.

0:24:510:24:53

-You'll feel a bump under your back, but don't worry.

-OK.

0:24:530:24:56

Just relax. There we go.

0:24:560:24:59

Ready, steady, slide.

0:24:590:25:02

Extra safety equipment is needed to get her out of the woodland safely.

0:25:020:25:06

All I'm doing at the moment is putting a safely line on,

0:25:060:25:09

that we've put on to the stretcher,

0:25:090:25:11

so as they are carrying the patient up the bankment,

0:25:110:25:14

if they slip or fall, then the patient's not going to go back down.

0:25:140:25:20

Members of the Ambulance Services HART team,

0:25:200:25:23

experts in technical rescue,

0:25:230:25:25

have been called in to haul Misha to safety.

0:25:250:25:28

No life-threatening injuries from what we can see.

0:25:280:25:31

Obviously, it's been a bad location,

0:25:310:25:33

to extricate her back up to the aircraft.

0:25:330:25:36

We're only four miles away from Sheffield Children's Hospital,

0:25:360:25:39

by air, which is obviously quite quick by road as well.

0:25:390:25:43

So what we've decided is to let Misha go by land ambulance,

0:25:430:25:46

and then that frees us up for any other jobs.

0:25:460:25:49

Misha is finally out of the woods.

0:25:490:25:52

Thankfully, hospital doctors find no other injuries,

0:25:520:25:55

but her accident leads to a summer in plaster, as her wrist heals.

0:25:550:25:59

Seeing first hand what can happen at a serious accident

0:26:080:26:11

gives the Helimed team a unique insight into the risks

0:26:110:26:15

many of us take every day to get from A to B.

0:26:150:26:18

So it is perhaps surprising that some of the paramedics are keen motorcyclists.

0:26:180:26:23

It's a Sunday afternoon,

0:26:260:26:28

and a motorcyclist has come off her bike on the A64 York bypass.

0:26:280:26:33

We're just wondering if it would be possible, could you get in touch

0:26:330:26:36

with the police and get them to shut the carriageway?

0:26:360:26:39

Roger, will do.

0:26:390:26:41

Pilot Mark Griffith needs to put Helimed 99 down

0:26:410:26:44

on the dual carriageway, but traffic is still flowing on one side.

0:26:440:26:48

Both carriageways are running at a stop there, the traffic.

0:26:480:26:52

Ah, yes. I see it there. Spotted, yes.

0:26:520:26:54

Paramedic Sam Burgess is a keen biker himself,

0:26:550:26:58

and dreads this sort of emergency call.

0:26:580:27:01

I try not to think about it too much at the time,

0:27:010:27:04

but when you think about it later on, in the cold light of day,

0:27:040:27:07

then, yeah, it does make you worry a little bit.

0:27:070:27:10

It's never going to end well,

0:27:100:27:11

when you're hitting concrete at whatever speed you're going,

0:27:110:27:14

and unfortunately, the stretch of road that this has happened on,

0:27:140:27:17

it's part of the A64, so it's quite a high speed limit.

0:27:170:27:20

If it's all right with you Mark, I'm not going to wait until we shut down.

0:27:200:27:23

-I'm just going to leg it across.

-Yeah, no problem at all.

0:27:230:27:26

The female motorcyclist is in a very serious condition.

0:27:280:27:32

Mark can't wait for the carriageway to be closed.

0:27:340:27:37

So he drops Sam and second paramedic Lee Davison nearby.

0:27:380:27:42

You all right, mate? Hello, love.

0:27:420:27:44

This is Mandy.

0:27:450:27:46

Hello, Mandy.

0:27:460:27:48

Believed to be a solo rider.

0:27:480:27:49

Right, Mandy, just relax this arm for me, sweetheart.

0:27:490:27:52

Mandy Plum was riding in the middle lane,

0:27:540:27:56

when she hit the central reservation.

0:27:560:27:59

She is unaware she has lost her foot.

0:28:000:28:03

If we can find it, then we'll take it with us.

0:28:030:28:05

One passer-by happens to work at the local hospital,

0:28:050:28:08

so she's helping out.

0:28:080:28:09

Her mother saw what happened.

0:28:090:28:12

My daughter works at Scarborough Hospital, so she knows what to do,

0:28:120:28:15

so just tried to assist and cover her leg up.

0:28:150:28:18

Her foot was completely off.

0:28:200:28:22

She was complaining her leg was really sore, really sore,

0:28:220:28:24

so what I have done, I've wrapped it up in my coat to keep it clean,

0:28:240:28:28

until the first-aiders came, the ambulance and everything.

0:28:280:28:31

My right leg's dead.

0:28:310:28:33

It's all right sweetheart, don't worry, they've popped a tourniquet on it

0:28:330:28:36

because there was a bit of bleeding down there,

0:28:360:28:39

so we just want to get that under control, all right?

0:28:390:28:43

-RADIO:

-Can you see there should be a rolling road block put into place,

0:28:430:28:46

coming down from the Scarborough side? Can you see that?

0:28:460:28:49

Not just yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

0:28:510:28:53

The air ambulance needs to touch down,

0:28:550:28:57

but there's too much traffic around.

0:28:570:29:00

I just need them to shut this carriageway, just on that car there,

0:29:000:29:03

that's all, just till we get aircraft on.

0:29:030:29:06

Even if you go to the end and stop it.

0:29:060:29:08

We've just had a problem getting a road block in,

0:29:090:29:11

to be able to get the aircraft to land.

0:29:110:29:13

It's just a priority we try to get the aircraft near to where we are.

0:29:130:29:16

We don't want another accident happening if we're landing, and there's still traffic going.

0:29:160:29:21

So we're going to wait for the police to put this road block in,

0:29:210:29:24

land on, put the patient on and fly them to Leeds.

0:29:240:29:26

Mandy, how bad's that pain, sweetheart?

0:29:260:29:29

Just my leg, from my knee downwards.

0:29:290:29:32

-Is it just that right leg?

-Yeah.

0:29:320:29:34

OK. How bad is it on scale of 0 to 10? How bad is it?

0:29:340:29:38

-It's 10 or 11.

-About a 10 or 11.

0:29:380:29:41

OK, let's us get you something for the pain.

0:29:410:29:43

Mandy hit the central barrier 70 metres from where she was found,

0:29:430:29:47

and her bike stopped 300 metres further down the road.

0:29:470:29:52

Officers find Mandy's biker boots, but cannot find her missing foot.

0:29:520:29:56

Mandy's husband is not injured, but is in shock.

0:29:590:30:02

We're you going somewhere nice on your bike?

0:30:020:30:05

Is this LGI A&E? We've got a 52-year-old female motorcyclist.

0:30:070:30:12

Injuries, she has got an amputated right foot,

0:30:120:30:18

and some lacerations to her right arm,

0:30:180:30:21

nothing else-based obvious detected.

0:30:210:30:23

We will be with you about ten to.

0:30:230:30:26

Where limbs have been amputated in an accident, there is

0:30:260:30:29

a real risk of excessive blood loss.

0:30:290:30:31

Everything is done to stem the bleeding and numb the pain.

0:30:310:30:35

How's that pain in your leg now?

0:30:350:30:37

-MANDY:

-Still painful.

-Still painful, is it?

0:30:370:30:40

-It's dead and...

-Just feels a bit numb, does it? OK.

0:30:400:30:43

I guess it's just a vertical left straight out.

0:30:500:30:52

OK, you are clear left, the traffic is stopped.

0:30:520:30:55

Police officers have been unable to find the missing foot,

0:30:560:31:00

but they will keep on searching.

0:31:000:31:02

When people lose body parts you can reattach them

0:31:020:31:05

within a certain amount of time of the injury, so that's why

0:31:050:31:08

the police have shut the scene now and they're going to keep an eye

0:31:080:31:11

out for it, so, keep fingers crossed that they find something.

0:31:110:31:15

Helimed 99 bypasses the local hospital in York,

0:31:150:31:19

and heads straight for Leeds General Infirmary.

0:31:190:31:22

Surgeons are waiting for Mandy.

0:31:220:31:24

But, her injuries are too serious for her foot to be reconstructed.

0:31:260:31:30

Instead, her right leg is amputated below the knee.

0:31:320:31:36

I were in the right-hand lane, and then suddenly a gust of wind

0:31:360:31:41

just came across and, you know, drove me into the central barrier.

0:31:410:31:48

In a few months, Mandy will be able to walk again.

0:31:480:31:52

She will be fitted with a prosthetic leg.

0:31:520:31:54

I haven't got to feel negative about anything.

0:31:540:31:57

I've got to feel completely positive

0:31:570:32:00

and I'm looking forward to practising with these prosthetic

0:32:000:32:03

limbs and eventually getting one of my own, so I can walk again.

0:32:030:32:08

Mandy, determined to make the most of life there.

0:32:130:32:16

But what about motorcyclist, Nick Kane, who suffered

0:32:160:32:19

suspected spinal injuries after a similar bike accident.

0:32:190:32:23

Nick, you're normally fit and well, no asthma, no diabetes, no epilepsy?

0:32:240:32:30

No problems with your heart in the past?

0:32:300:32:33

In the next hour, Nick will find out the extent of his injuries.

0:32:330:32:36

He can't feel anything from the chest down.

0:32:360:32:39

Scans carried out by consultants

0:32:390:32:41

here at the James Cook Hospital reveal his spinal cord is severed.

0:32:410:32:45

This is how Nick will spend the rest of his life.

0:32:450:32:49

It was just a typical Sunday afternoon ride,

0:32:500:32:52

we were only planning to be out for a couple of hours, we'd been out,

0:32:520:32:57

we'd filled up with fuel, we were on our way back, and this vehicle

0:32:570:33:01

decided to overtake some stationary cars and head-on crash with Nicholas.

0:33:010:33:06

Not a day goes by that I don't see it.

0:33:070:33:10

I remember being laid on the floor, being told not to move,

0:33:130:33:16

which, my reply was, "Well, I can't, I'm paralysed"

0:33:160:33:19

I knew pretty much instantly I couldn't move,

0:33:190:33:22

there was nothing there.

0:33:220:33:24

I can't feel my legs.

0:33:240:33:25

I then felt like about five seconds and there was an ambulance there,

0:33:250:33:29

and the next thing I knew, I opened my eyes again

0:33:290:33:32

and I was looking at the roof inside the air ambulance.

0:33:320:33:37

I just kept coming in and out of consciousness.

0:33:370:33:40

Then I woke up again in A&E with, I don't know,

0:33:400:33:45

it felt like there were hundreds of people around me.

0:33:450:33:48

He's fought hard to live and he's done it.

0:33:480:33:51

We are on the up now, we are on the up and there is a life out there

0:33:510:33:56

for Nick.

0:33:560:33:59

You've got to keep a positive attitude, it's a day at a time.

0:33:590:34:02

Every day is different. You find something new you can do every day.

0:34:020:34:06

I'm sure his life will move on and he'll live a fulfilling life,

0:34:070:34:12

albeit sat down.

0:34:120:34:14

Yeah, I think that's the way we look at it,

0:34:140:34:16

it's still Nick, he's just sat down.

0:34:160:34:19

Nick and his family have not let this life-changing injury hold

0:34:190:34:23

him back and he is now training for the region's wheelchair rugby team.

0:34:230:34:26

We've had him home for nearly a month now, which is

0:34:260:34:30

absolutely wonderful - it was a long, long time, that six months.

0:34:300:34:34

Tonight, Nick has joined the Bulls, at Sedgefield, which is

0:34:360:34:39

the North-East wheelchair rugby group and he comes up twice a week

0:34:390:34:44

and practises with all the lads, which is excellent, socially

0:34:440:34:48

and for his fitness, as well, because it will build his upper strength up.

0:34:480:34:52

You get in here and it's the social side of it,

0:34:550:34:58

all of the lads are in chairs, as well,

0:34:580:35:00

so when you talk about stuff to them about what you're going through

0:35:000:35:03

everyone's been through it once or twice already,

0:35:030:35:06

so, it's brilliant being here.

0:35:060:35:09

Life's very different now, very, very different,

0:35:110:35:14

this has been a devastating situation for Nick and all of us in his family.

0:35:140:35:19

The positive attitude is what has got us through,

0:35:200:35:23

we have never once thought Nick cannot do.

0:35:230:35:25

That's what gets you through it.

0:35:260:35:28

Starting young hasn't done Bradley Wiggins or Andy Murray any harm,

0:35:440:35:48

but there are some sports where 11 may be a little early.

0:35:480:35:52

The Helimed team always has to be ready for a change of plan.

0:35:550:35:59

Paramedics Tony Wilkes and Paul Kilner have just been

0:35:590:36:02

stood down from one emergency call, now they're being sent on another.

0:36:020:36:07

'I have got a different job for you, at Grange Moor,

0:36:070:36:10

'which is out south of Mirfield,

0:36:100:36:16

'an 11-year-old

0:36:160:36:18

'off a quad bike into a tree and gone over a wall. Over.'

0:36:180:36:22

-Did you get that, Tim?

-No.

0:36:240:36:26

We've been retasked to Mirfield, which is not far from here, I think.

0:36:260:36:31

I'm just sticking it in now for you.

0:36:310:36:33

In a remote field, a young girl has crashed her quad bike at high

0:36:370:36:41

speed, throwing her over a wall and through a barbed wire fence.

0:36:410:36:46

We were going too fast and then she flew round bend, hit the wall,

0:36:460:36:50

over the barbed wire, and landed out on the lane, screaming.

0:36:500:36:54

She stood up, with blood everywhere.

0:36:550:36:58

Courtney's mum is on the phone to ambulance control and they can

0:36:580:37:02

tell the helicopter crew exactly where they will find her.

0:37:020:37:06

'The patient is near the red Mercedes van in the field, over.'

0:37:060:37:10

From the air, this field isn't hard to find.

0:37:100:37:13

It's right next to Yorkshire's tallest landmark.

0:37:130:37:16

OK, so you've got every moor here, so, village, road...

0:37:160:37:21

-So it's where them cornfields are.

-Yes.

0:37:210:37:23

Yeah, just take a right turn.

0:37:240:37:27

A red van, is that what they said the patient was in?

0:37:270:37:29

Yes, that will be the one.

0:37:290:37:31

Courtney has managed to stagger back to her dad's van, but she is

0:37:350:37:39

in a lot of pain.

0:37:390:37:40

I couldn't turn, properly, like, it got jammed, and then I just

0:37:400:37:44

crashed into the wall and I fell over the wall and I've cut myself.

0:37:440:37:49

-Oh, dear, right...

-She didn't put her helmet on just for that lap...

0:37:490:37:52

-Did you have a helmet on?

-No.

-No, right.

0:37:520:37:55

Try and keep your hand nice and still for us.

0:37:550:37:57

I was going over the wall and then it crashed, and then

0:37:570:38:00

I seen nettles,

0:38:000:38:02

and then I seen my dad, and then he climbed over the wall.

0:38:020:38:04

And did you get up straightaway, then?

0:38:040:38:07

I tried to, but I couldn't get up.

0:38:070:38:11

Were you trapped at all?

0:38:110:38:13

No, I wasn't, but I couldn't get up because of the pain in my leg.

0:38:130:38:18

She has been going round nearly all day

0:38:180:38:20

and then we were just stood here,

0:38:200:38:23

the next minute I heard a big bang, and the quad's on its side,

0:38:230:38:26

and I ran over there as fast as I could, looked, "Where is she?"

0:38:260:38:31

looked over the wall, she were over the wall, just getting up.

0:38:310:38:34

I saw the blood here, and her hands were cleaner, so I told her to put

0:38:340:38:39

her hand over the cut and hold it, and then we've walked back down here,

0:38:390:38:44

and as she's walking, she said, "My leg's hurting, as well."

0:38:440:38:47

You've closed your eyes, one moment, then. Let's have a little look.

0:38:470:38:50

Keep your arm nice and still for us, darling.

0:38:500:38:53

You're doing really, really well.

0:38:530:38:55

Oh, yeah, that's it, I'll cover that back up again.

0:38:550:38:58

But the force needed to throw Courtney over a five-foot wall,

0:38:580:39:01

means Paul and Tony suspect she may have other, less obvious but,

0:39:010:39:05

but potentially more serious injuries.

0:39:050:39:08

She's got some lacerations from the barbed wire, no head injury,

0:39:080:39:12

thankfully, but, our concern is as we have been treating her

0:39:120:39:15

is her thigh, it looks like it may be swelling slightly.

0:39:150:39:19

-Whereabouts is that pain, Courtney, just in here?

-Yes.

0:39:190:39:23

She has got lacerations there, but our main concern is that she

0:39:230:39:26

may have fractured her femur, so the long bone in her leg, potentially.

0:39:260:39:30

Right, darling, I'm just going to put that on here, right?

0:39:300:39:33

We have just popped a little neck collar on basically, just because

0:39:330:39:36

of what has occurred, she has been thrown over the top of that wall.

0:39:360:39:39

She isn't complaining of any pain, she wasn't knocked out at all,

0:39:390:39:42

but it's because of the mechanism of what's occurred,

0:39:420:39:44

and it's a precautionary measure more than anything.

0:39:440:39:47

Have you had a good day, then, apart from this? Yes?

0:39:470:39:51

You haven't damaged the wall, have you?!

0:39:510:39:53

SHE ATTEMPTS A LAUGH

0:39:530:39:55

With so many cuts, there's a lot of bandaging to do.

0:39:550:39:58

You will look like a mummy by the time we have dressed you up,

0:39:580:40:01

with all this bandage.

0:40:010:40:03

Courtney is clearly upset, but not just about her injuries.

0:40:030:40:07

She's sorry for damaging the quad,

0:40:070:40:10

but I'm not bothered about the quad to tell you the truth,

0:40:100:40:13

that's all she kept saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," but hopefully she'll be all right.

0:40:130:40:18

An ambulance has now arrived -

0:40:200:40:22

extra help to get Courtney securely fastened to a spinal board.

0:40:220:40:25

It will help to keep her perfectly still before she gets to hospital.

0:40:250:40:30

For us to fly her, it would actually be quicker by land ambulance.

0:40:300:40:33

She's just a couple of miles down the road, so hopefully she'll be all

0:40:330:40:37

right, but there is potential that she has broken her femur,

0:40:370:40:39

the long bone in her legs.

0:40:390:40:41

And dad has promised a gift to cheer her up.

0:40:410:40:44

He's promised you a ferret, hasn't it?

0:40:440:40:47

Typical Yorkshire lass!

0:40:470:40:49

Compared with a quad bike, ferret-keeping is a little safer.

0:40:490:40:53

She has got a series of cuts, one of them quite deep,

0:40:530:40:57

really, to the right side of her upper thigh.

0:40:570:41:00

So, basically, what we have done is just dressed those up -

0:41:000:41:03

she isn't complaining of any neck pain,

0:41:030:41:06

but just for precaution, because of what's occurred,

0:41:060:41:08

we've put a neck collar on her and put her on a spinal board.

0:41:080:41:12

She wasn't knocked out, at all, so these are all good signs.

0:41:120:41:15

Courtney spends nearly two weeks in hospital, having surgery on the

0:41:160:41:21

open cuts to her legs, arms and stomach,

0:41:210:41:23

but all the time she's dreaming about this.

0:41:230:41:26

Her first chance to put the accident properly behind her.

0:41:300:41:34

Today, I have been on my quad, I was going round,

0:41:340:41:37

and it was the first time I had been on it since I fell off of it.

0:41:370:41:41

Allowing her back on the

0:41:440:41:45

quad has been a difficult decision for Courtney's mum,

0:41:450:41:48

but it seems you just can't stop an adventurous youngster like her.

0:41:480:41:53

We were quite nervous for her, but it's just one of them things -

0:41:530:41:57

if she wants to get back on it, then fair be it, she can go back on it,

0:41:570:42:00

but we'll not push her into anything that she doesn't

0:42:000:42:03

want to do, we'll support her if she does want to do it.

0:42:030:42:06

Because I haven't been on it for a while, it was really scary.

0:42:060:42:10

I think with the what ifs and the what buts, it's just not worth

0:42:100:42:15

thinking about, she took her helmet off just for the five minutes

0:42:150:42:19

and accidents do happen from time to time, and I hope it's the last.

0:42:190:42:23

And as you can see, Courtney

0:42:250:42:27

and now has all the right gear for her high-speed hobby.

0:42:270:42:30

Something the Helimed team wishes all quad bikers were equipped with.
