'Some of Swansea's most desperate homes are about to be transformed.' | 0:00:02 | 0:00:07
-Any chance of cracking on, next door? -Yes. -And doing it without chatting? | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
'Plasterer Jamie Denyer is a man on a mission.' | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
Whenever you fancy doing a stroke of work, just let me know, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
because it's not as if we're up against a deadline or anything. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
'He may be a tough taskmaster, but this isn't your typical job | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
'and he isn't your typical tradesman.' | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
'He wants to help Welsh families in the only way he can.' | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
You can't take away illness, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
you can't erase people's memories of a negative past, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
but what we can do is hammer a couple of bits of two-by-four together, plasterboard it, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:45
plaster it, paint it, and hopefully just make them smile a little bit. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
'Since moving to Swansea two years ago, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
'Brighton-born Jamie Denyer has started an extraordinary project.' | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
I started up my project, my charity project, ETSETH, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
which stands for Enlarge The Spirit, Encourage The Heart | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
and basically, what I was offering to do was plaster a room free of charge. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
People either send a letter of nomination or an e-mail, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
via the ETSETH website, nominating a deserving person. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
I then pick a couple of the letters themselves, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
because you can tell a lot from a letter. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
You can get a real good feel for it. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
I will then get in contact with that person, go to their house, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
do a site visit, have a cup of tea and a chat, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
get a little bit more or other feel for the person themselves, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
and then it will be a case of booking in a time to make over the room. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:57
Now, I've created a little bit of a monster. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
It's a big, pink, fluffy monster that's more likely to hug you | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
than bite you, but it's a monster nonetheless. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
'Jamie's next project takes him to Scurlage, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
'in the Gower, where life has been less than rosy | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
'for Sharon and teenage daughter Katie.' | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
That's some fat sausage rolls there, aren't there? | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
'Dealing with a marriage break-up is hard enough, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
'but they've also inherited an unfinished extension.' | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
For the past sort of three years or so, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Katie and I have had to kind of start all over again, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
when her dad and I separated. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
-Hiya, Jamie, how are you? -Good, thanks. -Come on in. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
'When Katie's dad and I were still together, we planned to build | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
'the extension, we started it, and he was building it with a friend. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
'They were doing all the work themselves.' | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
This, plan-wise, was supposed to be an en suite. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
You can see that the wall has been kept, there... | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
'And we separated then, and I remortgaged the house | 0:03:04 | 0:03:10
'and added some money on to that remortgage, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
'to finish the extension off, but I didn't realise how much,' | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
I suppose, materials, it was a big shock, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
I had no idea on how much it was going to cost. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
And then this is the bedroom. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
This is the bedroom, the bedroom-to-be. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
'I did a little bit of work on it, what we could, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:36
'and of course the money ran out then, so for three years, perhaps,' | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
now, three-and-a-half years, we've done absolutely nothing on it. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
And that's basically because we just can't afford to get it completed. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:51
I think we can make a bit of a change in here, in all fairness. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:59
It will look a tiny bit different by the time we're done! | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
That will be very good, yeah. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
That's all I'm going to say. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
'Well, my first thoughts are that we can make a massive difference.' | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
'The only thing is, I think we're going to have to prioritise | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
'as to what can actually be done.' | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
'As you can see there's two bedrooms downstairs, the little hallway, there is also an attic room upstairs. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
Now, the attic room I don't think is a priority, | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
inasmuch as it being used straightaway. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
There's going to be a bedroom for Katie there, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
and there was another room that was going to be an en suite, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
but the plumbing works that would need to be done in there, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
because it hasn't been position in its rightful place, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
it's going to be a lot of aggro, plumbing into that, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
so that's going to be another kind of habitable room. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
By prioritising the downstairs, we can get it done | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
to a much, much higher standard. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:56
Because there is no budget there, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
what we've got is purely donated, so we will do what we can | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04
with what we've got, but I think, with what I can sort out, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
beg and borrow from, it's a case of, we can make a real change in there. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
-Aye, aye, the cavalry's here. -How are you, mate, how are you doing? All right? | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
'There's no time like the present for Jamie.' | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
'He's called the cavalry, in the form of carpenter Steve and Jamie's apprentice, Corey.' | 0:05:20 | 0:05:26
If we concentrate on clearing out, a bit of preparation work, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
we'll plasterboard, there's a stud wall to be built, mate, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
so if you could crack on with that, that'd be fantastic. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Let's get the tools out then. Come on, boys, let's do it. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
Jamie, now, I've been helping for about the last year. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
I've only done about three jobs with him so far, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
but I hope to do a lot more in the future, you know? | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
It's very rewarding, doing it. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
Really enjoy it. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
-Less talk, more work! -Sorry, sorry! | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
Corey has helped me out loads on these projects and I think, | 0:06:02 | 0:06:10
in its own way, it's like an example, because I mean, he's 19 years old, | 0:06:10 | 0:06:16
and there's so much bad press about youngsters of that particular age. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Corey has been in the paper a couple of times now | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
and it's for the reason of the projects, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
where people that he actually knows, are actually in there for, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
like, mugging someone, thieving and going on a downward spiral. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
But he's held in very, very high esteem with his friends now. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
We are sort of really proud for what he does | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
and sort of all credit to him, you know? | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
'Although Jamie has an army of volunteers, | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
'it wasn't always this way.' | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
When I first started this, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
it was just literally me plastering a room, free of charge. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
And that's how it went for, like, the first four months. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
And then, it was a case of, er, more people heard about it, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
people that I'd done paid work through, other trades, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
they then said they wouldn't mind lending a hand, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
so it's a case of, we've got people like Steve next door, | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
I've got three other carpenters, a painter and decorator, electrician, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:27
so the scope of what can be done, all of a sudden widened. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:33
'Each project must be nominated.' | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
'In Sharon's case, it was current partner | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
'and work colleague Theo who approached Jamie.' | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
I nominated Sharon because, basically, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
they extension was not only unfinished, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
but we couldn't ever see a way | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
of getting it finished. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:53
Sharon's so selfless, always giving her time for anybody | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
and everybody else and never having much time for herself, really. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
So anything that can give them a better way of life, quality, | 0:08:02 | 0:08:08
it's great, you know? | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
'A few days later and it's a gloomy start in Scurlage, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
'but that hasn't dampened Jamie's enthusiasm.' | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
'Normally, he gives up two days | 0:08:20 | 0:08:21
'but in this instance, he's given himself less than two weeks | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
'to transform Sharon's extension.' | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
As you can see, the boys are in next door, Dean and Geraint. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Dean's helped me out numerous times. This is Geraint's first time. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
They're sort of keen as mustard. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
I think they wet the bed this morning, both of them! | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
But, today, as you can see, it's all plasterboarded, | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
fibre tape's all ready to go, | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
so the first bit were going to do is the ceiling and the two walls. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:50
I met Jamie about two years ago. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
He had met a girl from Swansea who I was in school with, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
he'd moved down with her, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:03
and he just contacted me to see if I had any work. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
He happened to mention that he was doing these charity jobs, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
and I thought that was a nice thing to do. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
I said, "Next time, I'll give you a hand," and here we are, two years on. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:17
We've seen some unfortunate cases. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
People really appreciate what we do for them, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
and it's only a day out of my week. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
It's easy for us to come here and do this and we get a lot from it. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
'Jamie's decision to start donating his expertise | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
'came following his own personal heartache and then meeting his new Swansea bride.' | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
I was living in Essex and married up there, and, just out of the blue, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:44
was told, "That's it, game over, you know, I want to separate." | 0:09:44 | 0:09:52
And it knocked me for six, in all fairness. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
The difficulties that come with that was, I went from | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
a two-salary relationship to a one-salary relationship. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
My, you know, my mortgage went higher. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
I had two young plasterers on the books | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
that I felt a real responsibility to, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
that I couldn't just sort of sack them at the time, | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
so I was taking out little personal loans, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
I was getting a credit card, | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
which was something I said I would never do, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
you know, just to keep things ticking over. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
But it was on a random night out in Brighton where I met a girl | 0:10:30 | 0:10:35
and after saying to myself, "Well, that's it, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
"I'm not looking for anything, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
"marriage is the biggest sham in the world," | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
all this, that and the other, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
she restored my faith in a lot of things. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
-How's it going, chaps? You winning? -Yep, getting there. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
'I think Sharon has hit a chord with me because I can really relate | 0:10:51 | 0:10:56
'to what she went through, because I went through exactly the same thing.' | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
Now, Sharon as a person, Katie as a person, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
go a long way for me to do a project. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
They're lovely people. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
Sharon does work for a very worthy and deserving cause. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:15
It's just all little elements and I think, because it will benefit them as a whole, | 0:11:15 | 0:11:21
but it will benefit Katie, who's still a youngster. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:27
It's all kind of part of the emotional healing process. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
Sort of cracking the whip on 'em. Can't let 'em slack. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
'Over the last three years, | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
'not only has Sharon dealt with the aftermath of a marriage breakdown, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:41
'she's also started a new job at a homeless charity in Swansea.' | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
When you start a new job, you don't know people very well, and of course | 0:11:46 | 0:11:52
you don't want to tell people what's going on in your personal life. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
You don't yet have that relationship with them. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
So it was really difficult, and, at the beginning, I thought, "Oh, my God, what have I done?" | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
Obviously, Katie was - is - | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
a big part of my life, and she did have a lot of issues | 0:12:05 | 0:12:09
going through school because, at the time as well, | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
it was the sort of transition between primary school | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17
and comprehensive school and it didn't go well for her, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
so all my time, really, was taken up with work and Katie. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:29
'Back in the extension, Jamie has come up with a plan.' | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
The smaller room was supposed to be an en suite, but because of | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
how it was planned, how the drainage is set up, it's just not viable, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:47
it's too expensive, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
so what were going to do is, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
I thought that because this has been a very hard process on Katie, | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
I would like to do something like a chill-out room, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
basically, a room where she can go in and just sort of relax | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
and also do her studies in peace and quiet. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07
I think she actually deserves that, you know? | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
'It's the following day, and with the plastering magic performed, | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
'Jamie is armed with more generous handymen, carpenters Pete and Gaz.' | 0:13:17 | 0:13:22
'He's also quite pleased with the progress, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
'even though there's still plenty to do.' | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
'Once it's at this stage, | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
'you can start to sort of a visualise it as a room, you know?' | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
This is when you can start to sort of see light at the end of the tunnel, you know? | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
And now that the boys are here today, it's in my mind's eye now | 0:13:40 | 0:13:44
that the skirting and the architraves are going to be on, | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
and it's a case of, you can start to think of the finishing touches. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
Once it's dry, the paint and other stuff is going to be going down. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
Yeah, it's a good feeling. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
I call Corey "the solar eclipse", because he only works now and again. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:10
About once in a blue moon, mate, because you work me so hard. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
-Just carry on now, eh? -Yeah. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
You ain't a bad boy, really, are you? He's a star, an absolute star. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
If truth be known, whatever goes wrong, | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
Corey then digs us out of a hole, really. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
Corey is the glue that holds this whole operation together. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
'Whilst the extension is left in Corey's capable hands, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
'Jamie needs to beg and borrow elsewhere.' | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
Just going into town to sort and the donation of carpets. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
Sharon doesn't actually know that the carpets are going down. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
I think, in her mind, | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
it is just literally the case of the stage that it's at now, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
and painted, really. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
Which, you know, she would be over the moon with, | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
but I'm trying to get every single little finishing touch that I can, | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
to make it look as good as we can. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
And hopefully she'll be pleasantly surprised with that. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
-How are you, Steve? -Pretty good, mate. How you? -Yes, very good. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
Jamie has spoken to a company about the possibility of donating carpets. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:19
We appreciate you donating the carpets. Superb. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
Right, I've chatted to the manufacturer. These are the kind of things we're looking at. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:27
With less than a week to finish the extension, | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
it looks as though Jamie is onto a winner. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
Well, in all fairness, we're spoilt for choice here. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
I thought it was just going to be a case of one or the other, | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
but we are spoilt for choice. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
So far, Jamie has helped over 20 families. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:52
One family who has benefited from his generosity is the Worgan family. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:57
Because their dad has gone to Afghanistan and the kids want to bring their friends back, | 0:15:57 | 0:16:03
I nominated the family as a group | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
because I wanted the living room | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
to be decent and it wasn't at the time, it was a mess. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
He, basically, ripped it apart | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
and completely replastered the room from top to bottom. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:18
Then, as a plus point, we came back from holiday | 0:16:18 | 0:16:23
and he'd completely renovated my daughter's bedroom. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
She was just so happy. We weren't expecting that. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
We were just expecting a basic bit of plastering. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
It made an amazing difference, cos there is no way we would have been able to afford it. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
My daughter's room was covered in mould and we couldn't get rid of it. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:40
We didn't know what we were going to do. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
We tried papering, but it grew back over the paper. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
So it has made a massive difference. I think he is a star. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
A genuinely nice person who wants to make a difference to people's lives. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:53
I just think he's a really stand-up guy. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
It is a few days since work has been done in Scurlage. Today, there's a new hive of activity. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:07
This is Hannah's first time she has helped out. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
Emma has helped out on a number of occasions. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
She has done quite a few jobs and she is absolutely loving it. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
It's people like Emma, having people like Emma aboard, | 0:17:18 | 0:17:23
it just makes the whole project roll smoothly. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
She's, yeah, she's an absolute diamond. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
I met a Jamie in a pub. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Erm, I was telling him I was in college | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
doing painting and decorating. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
He explained to me what he does | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
and I thought it was a really brilliant thing to do. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
I thought, "I'd love to do that." | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
I've always wanted to do something for charity, | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
but never really known what to do or what you could do to help. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
When I found out about this, I thought, "This is brill." | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
So, I've been doing it ever since. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
We haven't been here for the past couple of days, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
because we had to let stuff settle and the plaster to dry out. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
But, yeah, by the end of tomorrow, we should be there or thereabouts | 0:18:07 | 0:18:14
and then it's a case of waiting for the carpets to be fitted, | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
the blinds to be fitted | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
and then Steve the carpenter is coming back on Saturday | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
to do the finishing touches, such as put on the doors and stuff like that. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:28
So, we should be there or thereabouts. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
-Is this the second coat that is going on? -Yep, this is the second one. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:35
-The second coat. -This is going on good. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:40
-Once you've done that, any chance of cracking on next door? -Yep. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
-And doing it without chatting?! -Yes! -So we get a little bit more done. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:48
-Any chance of that, any danger? -No(!) | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
-I didn't think so, really(!) -Let's be realistic(!) | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
-It's like asking me to hold my breath! -Yeah! | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
Jamie really needs to push the pace if he is to finish the job on time. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
Sharon and Katie are expecting to see the finished extension in two days. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:08
Yes, on the painting side, there is light at the end of the tunnel. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:14
We're in the final throes. It's the last finishing touches. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:19
-I can still smell paint. -Yeah. -I was just wondering. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
It's the aroma of progression, let's call it that. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:27
That's good. That good. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:28
But, whether you will like the fuchsia pink, is another thing. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
It's, it's, er, progression, nonetheless. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
-It will be a bachelorette pad. -You will never see her. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
-No. -You'll think she's left home. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
Perhaps she'll lock me in. That's what will happen. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
-She might get the key for that door and lock me in, so I can't get out. -I like that idea! | 0:19:48 | 0:19:53
With the tea break over, | 0:19:59 | 0:20:00
Jamie will have to work well into the night to get the painting done. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
It's the day before the extension is unveiled. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
The carpets are being laid, but Jamie has other priorities today. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:21
As you can see, the juggling act is sort of in full swing. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:33
The juggling act of the project and the paid work. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
I'm here today on my own. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
Corey is on another job, getting it prepped up | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
and starting the ball rolling there, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
because we are only a day away from Sharon's big reveal. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:49
So, yeah, it's a case of getting this job | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
and the other job done tomorrow, then we can concentrate on putting our energy and focus | 0:20:52 | 0:20:58
into bringing Sharon's over the finishing line. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
Because I haven't been there today, but I believe the carpets have being laid today. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
I think the blinds are being installed | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
around about four o'clock today. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
There will be a lot happening that I haven't seen yet. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
But, yeah, just really excited about it. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
On the other side of Swansea, Sharon is oblivious to the activity in her home. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:24
She is on her way to work, supporting vulnerable adults in accessing further education, | 0:21:24 | 0:21:29
training and employment. It's given her a new focus. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:33
I've had quite a tough time myself. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
However, when I come to work there are people there who have had it really tough. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:43
Erm, and it does put things into perspective then. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
It's great to see their achievements | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
throughout their learning journey. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:56
Erm, and it's real job satisfaction, you know. | 0:21:56 | 0:22:02
This award was a shock to me, because, since I've been on this scheme | 0:22:05 | 0:22:11
and the certificates I've had, which are fantastic, which I thank you both for... | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
Today, Sharon is helping Neil, | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
but her thoughts are never too far from the extension. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
'The last couple of nights, I haven't been able to sleep, | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
'thinking about what is actually going on in the extension.' | 0:22:25 | 0:22:29
I came home from work last night | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
and as soon as I walked in the back door, it sort of hit me, the smell hit me. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:38
I knew it was paint. So obviously they are painting out there. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
You can hear noises, and the smells, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
you're thinking, "What are they actually doing?" | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
Because I haven't seen it. I can't see through the little window now, because they've blocked it out. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
So, it's wondering all the time what is going on out there. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:58
So, yeah, it's countdown, now, countdown to Saturday. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
Today is the day that Sharon and Katie will finally see their concrete-shell transformation. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:13
It's also the day of reckoning for Jamie and his team. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
Once, that is, they've finished admiring their handiwork. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
Superb! | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
Ah, they've done a class job. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
That's all the way throughout. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
That's beautiful. Beautiful. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
-Even up the apples! -Even the plastering's pretty good, eh? | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
LAUGHTER | 0:23:36 | 0:23:37
Oh, mate. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:39
The finished extension truly will be a turning point for Sharon. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
-Lights and all. -'It's going to be a massive difference. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
-'It will make a massive difference to us, isn't it, Kate?' -'Yeah.' | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
Erm, I think we'll be able to use the front door again. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
And your friends will be able to come over. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
And, of course, I know Jamie's done a massive amount of work out there. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:03
It's been a massive help. Because I wouldn't have been able to do it. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
I just wouldn't have been able to do it, so it would have stayed like that. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
It's been quite fun actually. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
We've loved it. We've loved having everybody here. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
It's going to be annoying when they've all gone. It'll be too quiet. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
As is it's Katie's birthday in a few days, | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
-Sharon is taking her and friends for lunch... -Have a good time. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
..before returning home to inspect Jamie's work. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
The clock's ticking, but Jamie seems to be a man down. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:40
Last time I saw him, he was walking through that way somewhere | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
-with a little carton in his hand. -What's that, a portion of chips? | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
He's on the chip bus, is he? | 0:24:47 | 0:24:49
Let's go and find him, shall we? | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
-Corey! -What? | 0:24:52 | 0:24:53
Whenever you fancy doing a stroke of work, you know, just let me know, | 0:24:56 | 0:25:00
it's not as if we are up against a deadline or anything(!) Yeah? | 0:25:00 | 0:25:04
Corey isn't allowed to refuel for long. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
They only have a few hours to finish the job. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
There's just one more thing before Jamie can relax. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:22
Both he and Katie are huge Chelsea fans. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:26
Hang on, what do you think you're doing?! | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
-We're improving the room, not making it look worse! -JAMIE MAKES MUFFLED NOISES | 0:25:28 | 0:25:32
-Get that down, for goodness sake! -JAMIE LAUGHS | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
It looks as though they may just have finished in time. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
-How are you girls? -Are you all right? -Yes. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
It's all good this end. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:50
As you can see, this is just the first bit as you come into the door. | 0:25:55 | 0:26:00
-You can finally use... -Oh, my God, yes. -..the front door. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:04
A massive difference. That is so different. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
I believe this is going to be the bedroom for Katie. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:14
Oh, my God! Oh! | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
Oh, my God! It's a room. A real room. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
-What do you think? -I think it's lovely. -Again, a massive change. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
It is a massive change. It's ready and you can just move in. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
-There we are. It's great. -It's amazing. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:35
This is going to be a chill-out room. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
-This is going to be a chill-out room for you. -Oh, my God. -Oh, wow! | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
-Look at that. -Oh, it's amazing. -That is amazing. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:50
The T-shirt is signed by John Terry. This can be your little bachelorette pad, | 0:26:50 | 0:26:56
where you can chill out, have no distractions, do homework, | 0:26:56 | 0:27:01
-chill, just do whatever you like, you know. -Yeah. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
-What do you reckon... -I think it's brill. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:08
-It's amazing. -..on you chill-out room? -It's really, really good. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:12
It's just perfect, isn't it? | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
Finally, Sharon's hopeless burden may well be a distant memory. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:21
-Thanks, Jamie. -You're more than welcome. You are more than welcome. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:25
SHE SOBS | 0:27:25 | 0:27:26
-This is why we do it. -Thank you. -To help people. And you deserve the help. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:34
-And I'm just pleased that we were here. -Thank you. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
You're more than welcome. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:40
More than welcome. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:42
-It's fabulous. -Yes. -It's really great. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:47
When you get a reaction like that, it makes every single second worth it. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:52
This is why we do what we do. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
Because we know that it will help people in more ways than one. | 0:27:54 | 0:28:00
As you can see, I am a bit choked. I can't talk now. But, yeah, it's wonderful. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:06
You can't thank him enough, really. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
What do you say? | 0:28:11 | 0:28:12
-Come on, girls. -It's another achievement for Jamie. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
-But he's hungry for more. -What's next is more of the same, in all fairness. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:20
Just people keep on nominating other people. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:25
We'd look at each nomination on a case-by-case basis | 0:28:25 | 0:28:30
and just carry on. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
As I like to say, changing the world one room at a time. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:36
