Because of what I'm going through, I feel like I've had my life. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
To call it a day in your life at 46, that ain't right. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
'We're here to help a soldier fight the biggest battle of all...' | 0:00:10 | 0:00:15
You seem to have it in your head | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
that if you can't be the man you were, you're not a good dad. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
It doesn't compute. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
'..to face the future stripped of the life that defined him.' | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured? | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
You know that, don't you? He thinks he's a burden to us. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
I don't see him like that. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
He's my dad, it doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair or not. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
'We're rebuilding a home to give a family a chance for a new beginning.' | 0:00:33 | 0:00:38
My worst fear is that he's going to try going down the stairs | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
and he's going to end up in the bottom of a pile. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
This is just... It's going to blow their mind. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
I am so, wow, pleased. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
'But it's not going to be easy.' | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
There is a crack that wide down the brickwork trying to break | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
away from the house, taking next door and everything else with it. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
With just nine days to do the job, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
we're going to need a small army to carry it off. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
And here they are! | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
This is DIY SOS: The Big Build! | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
CHEERING | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Maidstone, Kent is home to the Morris family - Mo, Jan, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
and their three children, Charelle, Karissa and Jordan. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
As a paratrooper for the Royal Engineers, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Mo devoted 20 years of his life to serving his country. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
From war-torn Bosnia to humanitarian missions in Kenya, Mo spent | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
his whole career striving tirelessly to be the best of the best. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
That was just my mentality. I just wanted to push all the time. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Sit-ups, press-ups, pull-ups, whatever. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
I set the bar and then everyone was saying, "We've got to compete. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
"We've got to beat Mo, we've got to beat Mo." | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
But I wouldn't let that happen. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
But after two decades, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
the gruelling demands of constant low-level parachute drops | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
started to take their toll on Mo's body. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Catastrophic nerve and ligament damage to his knees | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
left him in constant pain. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
I kept on going, and yeah, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
they eventually got me in for an op and basically all my ligaments, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
crucial ligaments and everything else had just gone. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
A few years down the line, they basically told me | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
that I'm going to be going through a medical discharge. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
In one fell swoop, Mo not only lost his career, but the army | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
accommodation the family had called home since the children were born. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
We had three children, no job, no income. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
My husband was lucky enough to get a pension from the army, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
but it would only just cover some of our bills. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
For four years, the family struggled on in cramped, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
temporary housing before scraping together every penny of Mo's | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
army disability pay out for a deposit on a family home. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
Mo attempted to find work, but after a string of operations, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
it was clear the damage to Mo's knees could not be repaired | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
and that doctors had done everything they could. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
They've told me that I'm not going to get any better. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
I've basically got to live with this and take the medication. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
Because of so many operations, I've got severe nerve damage. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
If I get any more operations, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
I then have to resort to sitting in a wheelchair. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Mo now lives his life in constant pain, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
confined to one room in a home totally | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
unsuitable for his needs, where even climbing the stairs to the | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
only loo is an excruciating ordeal. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
We help Dad quite a lot. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
Get around the house and getting up and down the stairs. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
It's hard at times. Yeah. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
My mum was having a lot of down moments. She cries a lot. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
She comes home from work stressed. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
It's not good for her. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
But we get on with it, though. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
It's clear this house is not just dragging Mo down | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
but the whole family, too. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
They've somehow slipped through the net of support that should be | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
there for them from day one. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
Seeing the predicament they were in, a friend of the family contacted us | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
on their behalf and we felt it wasn't right for anyone, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
let alone a man who'd served his country, to live like this. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
That's why we're here to help. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
We did ask just for a downstairs toilet with the council, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
and that's taken a while. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
But we thought... Cos he started not drinking as much as you normally | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
would, because he knew that he'd have to go up and down the stairs. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Can't do that all day, though. That's what he does. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
You don't drink anything all day because you can't go to the loo? Yeah. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
I'm not asking for the world. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
All we wanted was a downstairs toilet | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
so that I could go to the toilet as and when without any hassle. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
I just wanted that bit of freedom for myself. Freedom and independence. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
And I didn't want my kids staying in the house just to try | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
and help me get to the toilet. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
I just wanted them to go out and enjoy themselves, because... | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured? | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
You know that, don't you? | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
What, my kids? Yeah. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Oh... | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13 | |
They understand. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
We'll have a chat about this at a different time. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
I try and help him as much as I can, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25
but there's some stuff that I'm not physically able to help him with. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
Like, I went to a hospital with him | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
when he had his operation and getting him back after that, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
I've never seen him in pain like it before. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
All right? MO: Yeah. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:36
JORDAN: The amount of times I've heard him struggle to get in the bath | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
and there's been a little slip and my mum's just come | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
running because I haven't been able to have the strength to hold him, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
we'd have to get two or three of us to help. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
I've learnt to get on with it and love him for who he is, really. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
Having a downstairs loo may sound like a small thing, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
but for this family, it will be life-changing. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
But we're not stopping there. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:01
This whole house needs to work for Mo, no matter what the future holds. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
It's going to improve Mo's life | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
and he's going to be able to move around freely and be mobile. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
It's giving him the sense of being able to do more for himself, | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
so that he's got his pride and his dignity. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Mo's an incredibly proud man, which I know makes it | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
hard for him to accept help. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
As a soldier, he's done enough for others around the world. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
I know it's difficult, but this time | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
he's just got to let us do the same for him. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Make much of a difference, then, if we can actually sort this out? | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
Have you seen the programme? | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
ALL: Yeah. OK, so you know what goes on. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Are you excited about what the potential is? Very. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
'It's time to get Mo, Jan and the family off. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
'We've got just nine days, as usual, and the clock is already ticking.' | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
All right, then? Thank you very much. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
Take it easy. We'll see you soon. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
There you go, that's the family gone. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
Time to the meet the builders. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
'And the Maidstone trades haven't let us down! | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
'They've turned out in force. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:18
'There must be at least 60 blokes on site this morning. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
'Well, 59 blokes.' | 0:07:21 | 0:07:22
We've got our first lady electrician, this is Clare. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
That's Craig, that's Jordan, and that's... Harry. Harry. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
I heard there was cakes. Would you like one? Yes, there are cakes. Yes. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
He'd smelt them. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
If you eat it quick enough, you can pretend you didn't eat it. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
Thank you very much. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
Very nice. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
'Really, before you've even started? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
'With all these people on site, the pace of the build is already | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
'cracking along, but some things aren't just about manpower. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
'Concrete can only set so fast, so, these foundations | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
'for our planned extension had to be laid before we got here.' | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
You had to hand dig a lot of it, didn't you, | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
to avoid the services underneath? | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Yeah, we hand dug, initially just to avoid the drainage and bore down. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
We went down to five metres on these particular ones. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
In view of the fact that we're not paying you for this, why would you get involved? | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
It's all about helping out those that haven't got the ability to do | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
what's needed to be done. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:13
It's left to the likes of us and you to come and sort it out. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
What do you make of the site now that you see it? | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
I think it's moving at an incredible pace, actually. I think it's fantastic. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
'Only an hour in and the place already looks like a bomb's hit it. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
'But there is a plan behind all this pandemonium | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
'and that's down to our designer Gabrielle. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
'Her challenge is to redesign this house to work better for Mo.' | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
Yeah, this is as small as we can possibly, possibly make it. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
We've squeezed... we've even done | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
thinner stub walls to divide this space. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
'With his injuries getting progressively worse, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
'he could end up wheelchair-bound, so we're making the whole | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
'downstairs wheelchair friendly, which is proving tricky.' | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
Another tight one for you. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:51
Another one where your design skills to turn this into a TARDIS - | 0:08:51 | 0:08:55
get more inside than there's space to put, if you know I mean. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
Just trying to get everything you need for Mo in this | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
extension has been absolute hell. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
It's really been millimetre by millimetre to get this to work. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
It's been so frustrating for him, cos he just wants to contribute and do stuff. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
He's just been trapped in this one room, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
not being able to get stuck in and actually do things. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
So, I hope we can change all that. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:15
Gabby is not leaving an inch of this house untouched to get it | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
right for Mo and the family. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
Downstairs, we're ripping out the kitchen | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
and knocking through into the existing dining room to | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
create a kitchen-diner the whole family can use together. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
To the rear, we're building a timber-framed extension to give Mo | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
and Jan a downstairs bedroom and all-important | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
en suite wet room, so Mo doesn't have to negotiate the stairs. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs, it frees up a bedroom upstairs, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
so the two girls can now have a room each | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
for the first time in their lives! | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
And Jordan's boxroom is getting some custom space-saving furniture. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
Along with all this, we're putting in a brand-new family bathroom. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
Last but not least, we're widening all the downstairs doorways | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
and creating a new entrance and pathway | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
to the side of the house, to allow for wheelchair access in case | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
Mo needs to use his chair in the future. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
It's a gargantuan task and they only wanted a downstairs loo. Ha-ha! | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
Right, better get on with it and get this house cleared. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
LAUGHTER | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
Here you go. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:18
It's not heavy. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Something happened when I turned 50. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
You're having pains and aches and stuff, are you? | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
You know when people pick something up from the floor, they go, "Eurrr..." | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
They make a noise when you lean down. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
You do that, do you? I do that now. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:31
I've done that for 20 years. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
Are you saying I'm fat? | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
Eurrr... | 0:10:36 | 0:10:37
Yeah, that's basically what it is. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
'Marvellous. From one wide load to another - | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
'the timber-framed extension's arrived | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
'and it's as big-boned as our Devonian cousin.' | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Isn't it a little bit over engineered for a timber frame? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
It's well-engineered. It's well-engineered? | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
It's well-engineered, is what we're saying. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
It's well-engineered. It's interesting. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
When engineers do the job, they want to make sure that nothing goes wrong. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
You could hang the Tyne Bridge off of this. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
But, to be perfectly honest, it's not just supporting the timber-frame | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
extension, because we're removing all this back wall of the house. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
We're taking that middle spine out and putting the steel | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
structure in, so all the pressure on the building is on this corner. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
Oh, I see, yeah. And what's the brickwork like? | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
The brickwork is absolutely rubbish. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
So the house is a bit crumbly. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
This is not just holding a single-storey extension, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
it's putting the strength back into the house again. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
This house is crumbling like a bag of old biscuits, | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
but this massive amount of structural work is the only way | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
we can get everything sorted for Mo's needs. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
Jules has just been given the instructions to take the wall | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
out below and put a steel in. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:40
What we're looking at is that that wall isn't supporting | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
anything above the ceiling line and Jules has just correctly said | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
it'd be quicker to take the whole wall down from the top to the | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
floor and rebuild this in timber up here. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
'Go on, son! | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
'We're pretty much taking out every internal wall in the whole | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
'house, but the trouble is, when you start peeling back | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
'the layers of a building, you never know what you're going to find.' | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
We have some interesting news for you. What's that? | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
The end of the building's trying to fall off. Which end of the building? | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
This end of the building here. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
See if you can see the mistake. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
Oh. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:21 | |
What do you notice that's missing? | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
There's nothing holding that thing up. Yes, yes. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
"That thing" being the chimney. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
That, just looking at it from here, | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
is the scariest thing I've seen all day, and that's saying something. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
This will comfortably put us back by a day. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
'This is a nightmare situation. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
'The entire weight of the upstairs chimney stack is | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
'sitting on nothing more than these tired floorboards.' | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
This bit here is part of a chimney that did used to | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
go down through into the kitchen below and it does connect up with | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
the house next door, then goes up through the roof | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
and out into the open world. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
All the weight's just wanting to go that way on the house now. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
Taking the chimney next door and everything else with it. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
The big difficulty is, there is a crack, a hole that wide, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
running all the way down the brickwork, parting company up there, | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
which turns into this crack over here | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
and goes all the way down here, through this wall here, and | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
ends up downstairs in the kitchen below, below the stairs there. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
But that's one of the problems with houses of this period. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
All the mortar's died on them, they're all a bit tired, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
the bricks have started to crumble. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
When people make alterations, like, "Oh, we'll make the kitchen bigger, | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
"so we'll take the fireplace out, take the chimney breast out | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
"and just leave that one there..." | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
You just can't rip a chimney breast out | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
and leave it on floorboards. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
So, apart from there being a chimney trying to fall into the kitchen, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
the fact that the end of the building's trying to fall off, | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
that we've got a crack all the way down to the first floor, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
and we can't get the padstone in, because the current one's | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
in the way, so we'll have to take the staircase out, it's all going very well? | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
Wonderfully well, yeah. Swimmingly. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
It's a good day, really. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:56
'What we need is an overview from Dappy from N-Dubz.' | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
Looking at the size of this job, I think it's going | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
to take a little bit longer than we usually do. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
I know we do get it done in the end, | 0:14:05 | 0:14:06
but I think this is going to take more than the nine days. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
'Yes, thanks very much. This is the last thing we want. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
'We're going to need some specialist help to get these cracks | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
'fixed, and that's really worrying with such a tight time frame. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
'But everyone on site is doing what they can to solve the problem, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
'as it's our one chance to get the house sorted for the family.' | 0:14:22 | 0:14:28
Since he was medically discharged from the army ten years ago, | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
Mo has faced not only the loss of the career he loved, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
but a life with limited mobility and constant pain. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
It's tough, and ten years on he's still struggling to come to | 0:14:38 | 0:14:42
terms with his injuries, both physically and psychologically. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
When you add everything together, | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
how do you think the way you've been has affected the children and Jan? | 0:14:50 | 0:14:55
I think about it all the time. I try and hide my emotions. | 0:14:55 | 0:15:00
I try and keep all that away from them, | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
because if I wake up with a smile they think, "Oh, Dad's OK." | 0:15:02 | 0:15:07
So they go out and do their thing. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:08
Rather than say, "Look, kids, I'm in a bit of pain," and then, you know, | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
it's then them thinking, "Well, I better stay home with Dad." | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
Would that be a terrible thing? | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
I suppose it wouldn't be, | 0:15:22 | 0:15:23
but I feel that I've now stopped them from doing what they want to do. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
They do worry about you. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
I know they worry, but I just don't want them to. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
I don't want them to worry about me. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
Can you imagine any situation where you'd stop worrying about them | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
if they were struggling with something? | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
I'd never stop worrying about them. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
So, why should they stop worrying about you? | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
Because I feel that I've had my life, | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
whereas they're still trying to live theirs. Had your life? You're 46! | 0:15:48 | 0:15:52
OK, OK, OK, I've still got time to go, it's just that at the moment | 0:15:52 | 0:15:56
because I feel, because of what I'm going through, | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
I feel that I... I've basically come to a wall. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
To call it a day in your life, at 46, ain't right. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
Ain't right for you, ain't right for them, is it? | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
Oh, no, definitely. No. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:11
You've got to find a way to see this as a new beginning. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
You're toughest challenge - | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
the way that you will show your kids that you can conquer anything - | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
is get to get your head around this and conquer this. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
And find something positive to do yourself. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:24
So that you aren't saying that this is the end. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
Yeah. Yeah, definitely. That's your toughest task ever. Yeah. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
That's very hard. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
I'm really starting to see the extent of the baggage | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
Mo is carrying with him and it's sad to see. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
This build is about so much more than bricks and mortar. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
But I can't help thinking all this work will be in vain | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
unless I can get Mo to see he has got a future | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
and a family who love him no matter what. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
It's certainly been a first day full of stresses | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
and the large cracks we found are still very much hanging over us - | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
literally! | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
But at least we can get these steel girders in position | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
to give much-needed support to the back of the house, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
so the whole thing doesn't fall down on our heads! | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
You're even paying for the steels? | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
You paid for the steels? Yes. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
So you're working for us for nothing? Yeah. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
And you paid for the steels? Yes. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
Mate, I don't know what to say! | 0:17:15 | 0:17:16
Why would you do a thing like that? | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
Just to help out. Yeah, that's a lot of money, though. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
What size are we going, then? | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
Hang on, I am biggin' him up at the moment. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
Give the man a moment! LAUGHTER | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
Give the man a moment in the sunshine. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
No time for sentiment around here, is there? | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. No, it's no problem at all. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
SHOUTS | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
CHEERING | 0:17:39 | 0:17:40
Well, it's been a really interesting first day, | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
because the house has really fought us. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
We got a lot done, but a lot of problems thrown up, too. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
Two steps forward, one step back. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Mind you, seven o'clock at night, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
you can't fault the commitment, can you? | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
Isn't it marvellous! | 0:17:56 | 0:17:57
Morning. This morning is all about trying to stay warm. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
It's...fff....freezing! | 0:18:09 | 0:18:11
And they say there might be snow on the way. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
It never ceases to amaze me the effort of the local trades | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
up and down the country, | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
and it's no different here in Maidstone - | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
they're here in droves. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
Oh, it's snowing! See, I told you. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
All pitching in to help and donating their time | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
to do the best they can for Mo and the family. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
After ripping the guts out of the building yesterday, | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
we've now got to start to try and put everything back together. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
Look, you talk to these bricks - they've had enough. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
They've held this house up for over 100 years - they're tired. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
When we're 100, we'll want to be rested, won't we? | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
I'm feeling a bit that way during this conversation, to be honest. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
I think there's life in the old dog yet. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
I'm talking about the house, not Billy. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
Because of yesterday's cracks threatening to pull the house apart, | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
we've had to call in specialist structural fixers. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
Until they get here, we've got to be super careful, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
but there's still plenty to be getting on with outside. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
A team of gas fitter have been working overnight | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
to put in a bigger pipe for the new boiler, | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
which will keep the house warmer for Mo during the day, | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
and crucially, with Jan the only earner, it will save them money. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
You'll need more volume of gas, hence we've put in a bigger pipe. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
These boys have been working all night? | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
Yeah, these have been here since... Good-looking bunch, aren't they? Oh, yeah. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
These are the better-looking ones. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
Did you have to hand-pick 'em from the... I did, yeah. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
Modelling agency, yeah. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:26
They normally model the balaclavas. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
But, yeah, we've got 'em out. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
When you were leaving school, | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
and you saw the careers officer, | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
was it "I want to work with gas"? | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
All my family have worked with gas. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
Is that right? Gassy family. Yeah, a gassy family. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
It's in my blood. The gas is in my blood. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
Hope not, that's the bends, isn't it? If you get gas in your blood? | 0:19:45 | 0:19:49
You meet some lovely people along the way, don't you? | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
With limited mobility, it's often difficult for Mo to leave the house unaided. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
So the garden becomes a vital part of his world during the summer. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
And we drafted in Rich and the team to transform every inch of it. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:03
The first thing is to level the area to make a flat pathway for Mo | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
to get around the whole garden. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
Mo and Jan love their gardening, so we're putting in raised beds | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
so Mo can tend his plants and veg more easily. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
Along with this, we're putting in a special greenhouse | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
with wide doorways to give Mo easy access, | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
but it's tough work in these sub-zero temperatures. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
The cold not affect you? | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
Do you not fancy maybe a job in an office? | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
Nice collar and tie, sandwich at lunchtime? | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
No, I don't do technology. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
Photocopying your arse at the Christmas party? | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
Yeah, we do that. Oh, do you? THEY LAUGH | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
The single biggest problem with this build | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
is that the end of the building is trying to fall off. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
It is really worrying, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:44
but luckily for us, at extremely short notice, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
a team of specialist fixers have turned up | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
to try and stop the house falling down around our ears. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
So all this problem, | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
with the crack going right up through the house and into the loft, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
this is how it's being solved? That's right, yeah. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
You're stitching the wall together. Yes, yeah. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
We'll be using a special grout, with a stainless steel bar, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
and that will hold the wall. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
We've gone from the base here, right the way through to the loft. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:11
So that little twisting stainless steel rod is strong enough to hold all that together. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:17
Oh, yeah. Very strong indeed. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
That's absolutely brilliant. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:20
Saved the day. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:21
With luck, hopefully! THEY LAUGH | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
Absolutely fantastic. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:25
'That wasn't an accident, that was a critical review.' | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
Shut up and get on with it. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:29
That's the whole house well on the way | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
to being stitched back together. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
It's brilliant news, and it means our timber-frame extension | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
can now be erected and fixed onto the rear of the building. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:39
And this little house really needs the extra space. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
Have you seen Julian through the hole? Julian? | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
Thank you very much. Appreciate your work. Thank you very much. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
These guys put all the chemical fixing in, held the end wall on, | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
held the chimney on - done all that. In, out, in a day. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
We've got a building that will stay standing now. Very lovely of them. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
Very lovely of them. Top blokes. Lovely lads. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
By the way, could I have a 99 with strawberry sauce? Strawberry sauce? | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
Yeah. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:07 | |
There you are, son. Beautiful, thanks very much. ?7.80. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
I should've asked if he had a flake, or crushed nuts. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
With the build now back on track, we can start to fit | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
one of the special features Gabriel is putting in for Mo - | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
a wood-burning stove. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:23
So, Ben, my darling. You found us a log burner. I have, yes. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:28
For the dining room. I'm so excited. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
Can I have a look at the drawing? | 0:22:30 | 0:22:32
What we were hoping is, with these raised legs, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
it will be more accessible for Mo if he needed to be in a wheelchair. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
That's right. So will that still work in the arch we've got? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
We will make it work. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
That's the attitude we're getting all over the site. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
Everyone has been touched by Mo's situation, | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
and is going the extra mile for him and the family. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
It was family friend Alison who originally contacted the show. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
He's not a man that takes easily to having people help him, though, is he? No. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:58
I wrote that e-mail and it was sitting on my computer | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
for about two weeks, | 0:23:01 | 0:23:02
and I was like, "No, I shouldn't be sending this." | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
Because I know how proud they are. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
But now I've seen it, and now it's really happening, | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
I'm so excited. Just so excited for them. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
What do you make of the fact you've got, like, 70 blokes on site, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
giving all their time free, and all these materials and everything? | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
It's amazing! I can't believe how many people are here. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
I don't think they've got any idea how big the changes are they're making. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
All they wanted, really, was a downstairs toilet. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
So, this is just going to blow their mind. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
And the girls, and Jordan, it's going to be brilliant. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
Since Mo left the army ten years ago, both Charelle and Karissa | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
have seen their dad's condition deteriorate. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
It's a hard situation for everyone | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
but if the new house design can give Mo more independence, | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
it will take so much pressure off the rest of the family - | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
and that's down to Gabrielle to get it right. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:52
It is tough with him because he's got it in his head that he's OK. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
So he's trying to get around everywhere when he knows... | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
his body knows he can't, but he thinks he can. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
So, yeah, to help him, his body, physically | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
and mentally, to know that he can get around... | 0:24:05 | 0:24:09
So how does he get up and down the stairs at the moment? | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
It did take all of us to get him upstairs once, didn't it? Yeah. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:17
And it hurt a lot. So we were... "Oh!" | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
But you can't... It's hard, because we can't help more than we can. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
You feel like what you're doing for him isn't enough, | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
that you can't take that pain away from him, so... | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
You kind of have to just deal with that, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
and help as much as you can. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
But them stairs really do hurt him. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:37
Last time we met we talked a little bit about your dad | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
and using a wheelchair. And I know that that is a really... | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
He doesn't want to use it. No. And why should he? | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
We were talking about him being stuck in the hallway. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
Once he's in his wheelchair he can't move around the whole house, can he? | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
And he just burst into tears. He thinks he's a burden to us. Yeah. | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
It's really sad because I don't see him like that. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
He's my Dad. It doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
The fact that he came out with the fact that he thinks he's a burden was really upsetting, | 0:25:07 | 0:25:12
because I don't think he is. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
I don't want him to feel like that at all. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:16
I just think if we had more space for him so he wasn't trapped in one room, | 0:25:16 | 0:25:20
that would be a really big, positive change. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
And just warm everything up a bit. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
Just make that lay out work so he's not having to fight the house. Yeah. Yeah. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:31
It's clear listening to the girls how much they love their dad | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
and how much they want to help him. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
But it's tough for a proud man to accept help, | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
especially from your children. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
Morning! | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
The sun is out, the snow is gone and we are at the halfway stage. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:52
Look at this timber-frame extension. It's up in just a few days. Amazing! | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
It's the biggest size planning regs would allow, and we're trying to maximise every inch of living area. | 0:25:55 | 0:26:00
So instead of a traditional brick system, | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
we're using a clever space-saving thing which simply slots together. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
The rear of the garden has now been levelled to allow better | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
access for Mo and a new pathway created, which is handy, | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
as what's going to sit up the end of said pathway is just arriving. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:16
Good morning. Good morning, gentlemen. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
What is so special about this greenhouse then? | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
This greenhouse is modified for wheelchair access. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
It has got a lower threshold. Have you got one in your own house? | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
I haven't got one. Have you not? No. You're joking! | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
I've got a very small garden. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
Why did you want to contribute this to the job? | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
In the past, I've had hard times and people have given me a leg up | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
and that sort of thing. Let's help this family out. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
Let's give them a greenhouse. You're a gentleman and a scholar. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
Very nice. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
Seems like we haven't got rid of all the cracks in this household. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
The extension is up, the roof is on it, amazingly. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
There's a stud wall going in. The floor is being prepared. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:01
Plumbing and electrics in in this room. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
New window being built and a new door has already been punched through. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
Up here, the bathroom is taking shape. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
We've built a bathroom and the plumbing is in. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
There is a bit of plastering prep going on. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:13
There is plastering going on here. It looks like a plaster floor. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
It most certainly is and do you mind leaving? Yes. I best get out of the way. Busy though, isn't it? | 0:27:16 | 0:27:22
They are a bit like that, plasterers. They want their space. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
By tonight, it will be plasterboarded. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
And skimmed. So this area will have a kitchen in it tomorrow. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:32
There's 16 hungry plasterers, having it. You watch. You wait. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:36
I used to be a cab driver, a taxi driver. Do you know why I packed up? | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
Why? I didn't like people talking behind my back! | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
Talking behind my back! Yes? No? Nothing. Tough crowd. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:51
With the greenhouse up, the garden is really starting to take shape now | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
and along with the usual suspects, we're being helped out today by some of Jan's mates from work. | 0:27:56 | 0:28:01
Including best friend Lynn. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:03
How has it been for Jan these last few years? | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
It's been harder for Jan than anybody knows. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
Because people see Mo's disability | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
but they don't see what Janet copes with. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
She works full-time, she is a mother. She does absolutely everything. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
She deserves this and Mo does. But especially her. | 0:28:22 | 0:28:26
She's going to love it. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
It's clear Jan and Mo have lots of friends. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:36
Jan has been there through all Mo's battles with injury, | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
the stress of leaving the army and adapting back into civilian life. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:43
Working hard to not only look after Mo, but raise a family | 0:28:43 | 0:28:47
and keep a roof over their heads. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
You can see the kids are worried about him. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
Worried about, you know, how he is within himself. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:55
My worst fear is after he's had an operation that he's going to try | 0:28:55 | 0:28:59
and go down the stairs and end up at the bottom of a pile. | 0:28:59 | 0:29:02
And you are going to walk into that? Yes. That is why I ring him every day. I phone him every day. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:08
This has been very hard on you, all this, hasn't it? | 0:29:08 | 0:29:10
Do you see light at the end of the tunnel? | 0:29:20 | 0:29:22
I don't necessarily see light at the end of the tunnel. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
I see it as, this is how life is. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
What do you make of the fact that all of these | 0:29:36 | 0:29:38
builders are in there, changing things around you and the family? | 0:29:38 | 0:29:41
It's amazing but I can't quite... | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
I can hear you saying it but in my head it's sort of like, why? | 0:29:44 | 0:29:49
Because they think what's happened to him is unfair and they think | 0:29:49 | 0:29:53
they can put themselves out and make a difference. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
They will be making a difference all right. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
You wait until you see it. It's lovely. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
I'm not supposed to give anything away but it is lovely. | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
It will make life easier for you and the kids and Mo. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:18
And maybe you will see it as a new beginning. I hope so. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:21
Well, I told her a bit of a white lie. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:33
The house doesn't look great at the moment, | 0:30:33 | 0:30:35
but it will do and that is thanks to everyone on site, including Chris | 0:30:35 | 0:30:39
and his team of 16 plasterers who have put in a monumental effort, | 0:30:39 | 0:30:43
which is great news as we've only got three days left. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:46
That is the way to skim a kitchen. It wouldn't happen in the real world, would it? | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
Just goes to prove you don't have to wear a cape to be a superhero. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:56
With every inch of this house plastered, we can start to turn our thoughts to kitting the place out. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:02
There's a new kitchen going in, | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
which has been specially designed for Mo, with an eye-level oven | 0:31:04 | 0:31:08
and low work surface to make baking, one of his passions, easier for him. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:12
And talking of cakes. Can we interest you in.... | 0:31:12 | 0:31:16
Look at that! Or maybe... Or maybe... | 0:31:16 | 0:31:19
That's enough. No. Wait! Or maybe... | 0:31:19 | 0:31:22
I'm going to have a banoffee. You made all of these, did you? | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
Thank you very much. That's very kind of you. Thank you very much. Very clever. I couldn't make those. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:30
Have you got someone here working on the build? Yes. My dad and my brother. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:34
What about your girl? I know. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:35
I'm the chief cake taster! Is that your job, is it? Yes. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:38
My brother actually likes baking bacon and cheese muffins. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:43
Bacon and cheese muffins? That sounds nice. That's tomorrow. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:47
That's tomorrow! What? | 0:31:47 | 0:31:50
We don't believe a bacon and cheese muffin can taste nice. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:56
No, not at all. No, I'm not having that. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:59
That would just be weird, wouldn't it? I'd like to see you try! | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
What do you mean, hint? What hint? | 0:32:06 | 0:32:08
With the new Mo-friendly lay out of the house taking shape, | 0:32:08 | 0:32:11
we can start to see how the design is going to help him in the future. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
To get this right, we have been working closely with Mo's | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
occupational therapist, Francis. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
So what do you think? It looks brilliant. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:23
I can't believe the difference. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:25
I came on Friday and it wasn't even plastered then. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
The kitchen wasn't in. The space, the doors are wide. It's excellent. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:32
So not only does it look beautiful, it's actually effective for Mo. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:36
Yes. He will be able to... | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
If he's using his wheelchair, he'll be able to get around. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:43
He can enter the bedroom, he can enter the bathroom, use the kitchen, use the oven. | 0:32:43 | 0:32:48
We are designing it for wheelchair use because it makes life easier | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
for him if he uses a wheelchair at least some of the time. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:54
Yes, and we don't know what the future holds. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:56
I think it's good that we make sure we meet his current needs | 0:32:56 | 0:33:00
and longer-term needs as well. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
Coming to terms with leaving the Armed Forces and re-entering | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
Civvy Street is tough enough, even without Mo's injuries. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:11
Helping him through that transition has been his old friend and ex-Royal Engineer, Roy. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:16
Tell us about Mo himself. He strikes us as a very solid, very likeable lad. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:20
But he seems to be finding it difficult to come to terms | 0:33:20 | 0:33:22
with the fact that he can't go running and jogging | 0:33:22 | 0:33:25
and doing all the things he did before. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
When I first met him, he had a slight injury, | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
which a lot of ex-servicemen have. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:31
I've known him over 20 years. He was a really fit character. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:36
But over the years, the injury has worsened and worsened and also, | 0:33:36 | 0:33:40
it's dragging poor old Jan down as well. | 0:33:40 | 0:33:43
She has been solid all the way through. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:46
But, you know, it's a strain on her as well. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:50
I can see by the way you're talking about him, | 0:33:50 | 0:33:52
you are very emotional about the family and about him. Yes. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:56
What do you make of what we've done? | 0:33:56 | 0:33:58
Well, we've destroyed it so far but you know where we are heading. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
It looks fantastic. I'm so... Wow! Pleased. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:04
I am so... Words... | 0:34:04 | 0:34:08
I'm filling up. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:10
Sorry. Come with me. Grab a crash hat and I'll show you what we are up to. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:16
The last time I spoke to Mo, he told me he'd had his life. | 0:34:16 | 0:34:21
At 46, he thinks his injuries have robbed him of a future. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:24
It's just not right. | 0:34:24 | 0:34:26
And it's this which has been playing on my mind throughout the build | 0:34:26 | 0:34:30
and I must admit I'm struggling to try and help Mo find a way of moving forward. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:34
So I've contacted a close ex-army mate of mine, Ken Haines, | 0:34:34 | 0:34:38
who's been working with ex-servicemen, many of whom are injured, to see if he can help. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:42
If we can somehow get Mo to see this build as a fresh start, | 0:34:42 | 0:34:46
I'm hoping it will at least be a foundation for a brighter future for him and the family. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:51
I'm just hoping Ken can relate to Mo in a way I can't. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:56
I'm going to get you down to Bristol to come and see the guys down at my place. | 0:34:56 | 0:35:00
Some of them are very much like you. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:02
"I don't want to be a burden", all that kind of stuff. That is not right. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:06
You are entitled to your life. You are entitled to your aspirations. | 0:35:06 | 0:35:10
You are entitled to enjoy your life. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
Because at the end of the day, if you don't, | 0:35:13 | 0:35:15
it's going to have a detrimental effect on you in the long-term. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:18
It will drive you into the ground. It will drive you into the ground. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:22
The aim is to go up. The only way is up. | 0:35:22 | 0:35:24
I like my family to enjoy what they are doing. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
Going with their friends and doing whatever. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:29
For my son, if he wants to go to a match or a party or whatever, | 0:35:29 | 0:35:34
I don't want him at home staying with me, | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
pushing me around the house or taking me to the toilet. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
You know they don't just cope with you. You know that they love you. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:43
You're not something they have to cope with. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:45
From my early time, I missed a lot of their... | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
The growing up. Yes. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:54
Of course you did, because you were away serving your country. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
I wanted to be with them and do things. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
So when you then came out of the army and had the time to do them, you weren't physically able to. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:10
Yes, definitely. You are terribly hard on yourself. You just got hurt. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:16
It's your service that hurt you but that's not your fault. | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
That's not your fault. There are a lot of people who got injured badly. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:24
A lot of people who had niggly injuries they can never get rid of that saw them | 0:36:24 | 0:36:28
being invalided out of the armed services, but it's not their fault. Definitely not their fault. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:33
You can't keep being angry with yourself because of the situation you are in. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
I will give you a cast-iron guarantee that when you go back to your house, | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
it will be absolutely perfectly usable for you to move and spend time with your family. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:46
So you are going to have to do some promising in return, | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
to maybe think again about some sense of forgiving yourself for getting yourself into this situation | 0:36:49 | 0:36:54
because you can't keep going through life thinking like that. | 0:36:54 | 0:36:58
And I promise you that I'll give you all the help I can to get you that support. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
Back on the site, every single person is also doing what | 0:37:09 | 0:37:12
they can to help Mo, working into the night to give him the independence he deserves. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:17
Everything in the house is being fine-tuned for Mo and the rest | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
of the family to make his home life as easy and stress-free as possible. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:26
Do you think that looks right or do you want it lower? | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
It can come down six inches. But for the wheelchair... | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
Looks wise, it would be better a bit lower but I think for Mo, this is better. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:35
In the new extension, the wet room is really starting to look the business. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:39
We are doing the final polish of the tiles with the sweatshirt. I like to see a tradesman! | 0:37:39 | 0:37:44
I tell you what, you knocked that out in record time, didn't you? | 0:37:44 | 0:37:48
Nice! What do you think, Christopher? It's somewhere to wash, isn't it? That's nice! | 0:37:48 | 0:37:52
Praise indeed! In many ways, your builder is defined by his headwear. | 0:37:52 | 0:37:56
I've become rather attached to mine, although I can't say Julian has. | 0:37:56 | 0:37:59
You're saying this hat is not working for me? I look bad in a hat, is that what you're saying? | 0:37:59 | 0:38:04
Terrible. If accentuates your features. And you don't think that's a good thing? | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
I don't think that's a good thing, no. You're nothing without your hair. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:13
I like the brushed forward look. See what I mean? | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
It's a better look, is it? | 0:38:15 | 0:38:17
It's like a really bad toupee when you do that. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
He looks a bit like Jim Carrey like that. | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
With me, it's all about looks. And him! | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
Look, the kitchen is just about done. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:30
Great vibe on the site, isn't it? It's great. I'd love to do another one. Would you? Really? I would. | 0:38:30 | 0:38:35
Without a doubt. Isn't that amazing? | 0:38:35 | 0:38:37
We've just taken advantage of the man for several days | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
to work in the most uncomfortable environment possible, to put in this | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
beautiful kitchen for no pay at all, and you want to come and do another one. Why not? | 0:38:43 | 0:38:47
That's the great British builder, that is. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:50
Wonderful! | 0:38:52 | 0:38:53
It's the final day and we are almost there. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
How are we getting on with the job? Are we going to get it finished? | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
ALL: Yes. Fairly confident? ALL: Yes. Lovely. All right. | 0:39:03 | 0:39:06
Don't be fooled. We may sound a little deflated on the outside | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
but just like this mattress, inside we are raring to go. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
It has been vacuum-packed. All the air's been sucked out of it, which shrinks it right up. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:19
As soon as you cut the seal, the air rushes in and it expands and fills up. | 0:39:19 | 0:39:23
It's like getting up in the morning and stretching out. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
Give it another go now, Bill. | 0:39:26 | 0:39:28
That is it. That is me. Anyone want to join me? | 0:39:30 | 0:39:34
I'll take you down the gym! | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
But the morning has not started well for one of us - our designer, Gabriel. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:43
Just to let you know, your lights, your bedside lights, they still haven't arrived. | 0:39:44 | 0:39:48
Why did he have to come and tell me that right now when you're here? | 0:39:48 | 0:39:52
Why are we having bedside lights delivered on the last day? | 0:39:52 | 0:39:55
Because they were apparently delivered earlier in the week, but actually in real life they weren't. | 0:39:55 | 0:40:00
How lame does that sound? So technically, they weren't delivered. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:05
On the delivery note it said they were here but they weren't here. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
We will be done in time, won't we? Or are we in the double jeopardy... | 0:40:08 | 0:40:12
Do I need to say something, like they do on telly, | 0:40:12 | 0:40:15
"Will we finish in time?" | 0:40:15 | 0:40:18
I mean, obviously, you know we've never had one where we haven't finished in time | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
and if we had, we would just work into the middle of the night to get it done. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:25
But you could play along too. | 0:40:25 | 0:40:27
If I do some jeopardy now, because telly people like jeopardy so when we come to edit this together, | 0:40:27 | 0:40:31
if I do a jeopardy thing now, "Will we finish or won't we?" | 0:40:31 | 0:40:34
DRAMATIC MUSIC | 0:40:34 | 0:40:36
But we will finish, won't we? We will finish, but I want it to look beautiful and perfect. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:42
I've spent a long time trying to get it beautiful and perfect. | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
I just saw Katie. It's fine. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
The bedside tables haven't turned up either. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
Oh, dear! It's going to be a long day and a long night by the sounds of it. | 0:40:52 | 0:40:56
But before we show off the house to the family tomorrow, | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
I really need to do just one last thing. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:01
Being a dad myself, I know how tricky it can sometimes be for fathers and sons | 0:41:01 | 0:41:05
to get through to each other, to tell each other how they feel. | 0:41:05 | 0:41:08
It's important for me to try and get Mo to see that Jordan doesn't | 0:41:08 | 0:41:12
need him to be Superman, just a dad. | 0:41:12 | 0:41:15
He loves him for who he is. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:17
You are in a unique position here that he's watching television and he | 0:41:17 | 0:41:20
can't interrupt you, so what is the one thing you would say to your dad? | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
I just want him to be safe and be able to get about | 0:41:23 | 0:41:26
and have his own independence and enjoy his life. Be happy. | 0:41:26 | 0:41:30
Be happy, yes. He thinks he's a burden on us. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
We tell him he's not in our way. We are doing it because we love him. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:36
Even though it's hurting him he'll still go around on his crutches, regardless. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:41
Your message to him is, you love him and he's not a burden. Yes. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:46
He'll hear that now. Good. | 0:41:49 | 0:41:51
Are you looking forward to tomorrow? Are you looking forward to seeing the house? Very. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:55
What is it that you need? Downstairs toilet. That's it, really. | 0:41:55 | 0:42:00
It has always been that, hasn't it? Yes. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
He's struggled with that for so long. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:04
So anything above a downstairs toilet would be a bonus? Yeah. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:09
Big bonus. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:13
They are not asking for much, are they? | 0:42:13 | 0:42:16
It's the final push and we can start to see the culmination of all this hard work. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:20
In the back garden, Rich and the team are just putting | 0:42:20 | 0:42:23
the finishing touches to a brilliant new outdoor kitchen. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
Look at this! I haven't seen this before. Barbecue built by the chaps. Outdoor kitchen. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:32
And it will work whether he is standing or sitting, won't it? Yes. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:35
It's exactly the right height for both. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:37
That is quite something, that is. How has it been then? | 0:42:37 | 0:42:40
We are getting towards the end of it now and you have been here from the beginning, | 0:42:40 | 0:42:44
so what do you make of it all? I've really enjoyed it. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:46
It's amazing what gets done and the effort that everybody puts in. | 0:42:46 | 0:42:49
It is one big team effort. Yes, loved it. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:52
Have you really? Yes, I have. This is really looking the part. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:55
I can't wait to see it when it's all tidied up and we can show it to them. Amazing. Thank you, chaps. | 0:42:55 | 0:43:00
And in the dining room, there's just one last thing to fit. | 0:43:01 | 0:43:04
Not only have brothers Mark and Steve donated the steel girders | 0:43:04 | 0:43:07
holding up the room we're standing in, | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
they have designed and built this handmade metallic masterpiece. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:13
Look at that! What you think? That's lovely. It finishes it off lovely. | 0:43:13 | 0:43:18
It looks beautiful. That is lovely. That's the best thing I've seen all day. | 0:43:18 | 0:43:23
APPLAUSE | 0:43:23 | 0:43:24
Even at this late stage, | 0:43:25 | 0:43:27
the generosity of the trades here in Maidstone is amazing to see. | 0:43:27 | 0:43:31
But what a difference this will make to the lives of one family. | 0:43:31 | 0:43:35
Just nine days ago, | 0:43:42 | 0:43:44
we arrived here in Maidstone to find a family at crisis point. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:48
Mo's 20 year army career had left him | 0:43:48 | 0:43:51
with sustained injuries that, even after countless operations, | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
were getting progressively worse, | 0:43:54 | 0:43:56
leaving him a virtual prisoner in his own home. | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
Because of what I'm going through, I feel that I've had my life. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:02
To call it a day in your life, at 46, isn't right. | 0:44:02 | 0:44:06
Even with the love and support of his family, | 0:44:06 | 0:44:09
Mo was still suffering in a house which was clearly unfit for his needs. | 0:44:09 | 0:44:12
It was a situation we could never have solved on our own | 0:44:13 | 0:44:16
and it's only due to the monumental effort of an army of local Maidstone trades that we've done it. | 0:44:16 | 0:44:22
We've knocked through and completely opened up the downstairs | 0:44:22 | 0:44:25
to create this open-plan kitchen diner which is now a space | 0:44:25 | 0:44:28
the whole family can use together. | 0:44:28 | 0:44:31
The Shaker style kitchen combines simple elegant lines with the lowered work surface | 0:44:31 | 0:44:35
and raised oven to make cooking as easy as possible for Mo. | 0:44:35 | 0:44:41
There's a super efficient wood-burning stove, helping give this house added warmth, | 0:44:41 | 0:44:45
which massively helps with Mo's knee pain. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:48
It's finished with raised legs so Mo can reach the door more easily. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:52
Above all else, the aim of this build was to solve | 0:44:55 | 0:44:58
the problem of Mo having to use the stairs. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:00
To do this, we have added a ground floor extension to the rear of the house, | 0:45:00 | 0:45:04
allowing us to create a master bedroom suite for Mo and Jan. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:07
There's now a downstairs wet room, complete with rainforest shower | 0:45:09 | 0:45:12
and wheelchair access in case Mo needs to use his chair in the future. | 0:45:12 | 0:45:16
And of course, the most important feature of all - the downstairs loo. | 0:45:16 | 0:45:20
The front room is finished in neutral tones with | 0:45:22 | 0:45:25
accents of colour on the cushions and curtains. | 0:45:25 | 0:45:28
We've added these simple but stylish built-in shelving units either side of the old fireplace, | 0:45:28 | 0:45:33
which is pretty much the only thing we left standing in the entire house. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:37
With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs, | 0:45:40 | 0:45:41
upstairs has now become a parent-free zone. | 0:45:41 | 0:45:44
Charelle and Karissa now have a bedroom each for the first time in their lives. | 0:45:44 | 0:45:49
Charelle's room has a classical yet relaxed feel, | 0:45:49 | 0:45:52
which is very much in keeping with the period of the house. | 0:45:52 | 0:45:55
Whilst Karissa's room is finished in soft blues, | 0:45:55 | 0:45:58
offset with simple but timeless bedroom furniture. | 0:45:58 | 0:46:02
Jordan's room has been transformed with this stunning | 0:46:02 | 0:46:05
custom-made shelving unit for his games console and TV. | 0:46:05 | 0:46:10
And the old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished | 0:46:11 | 0:46:15
with these cool subway tiles. | 0:46:15 | 0:46:17
Outside, the entire garden has now been redesigned and I've got | 0:46:18 | 0:46:22
to say, Rich and the lads have really gone the extra mile. | 0:46:22 | 0:46:25
They've created this superb new outdoor kitchen area so Mo | 0:46:25 | 0:46:29
and Jan can have their friends over for a barbecue in the summer months. | 0:46:29 | 0:46:34
The whole garden has been levelled and we've used railway sleepers | 0:46:34 | 0:46:37
to create these stylish raised beds to make gardening easier for Mo. | 0:46:37 | 0:46:41
Along with this, we've put in an amazing greenhouse with wide | 0:46:41 | 0:46:44
access doorway and automatic temperature adjustment. | 0:46:44 | 0:46:48
The real challenge with this build was not only making Mo's home | 0:46:48 | 0:46:51
environment better, but also trying to help Mo confront his injuries | 0:46:51 | 0:46:54
and civilian life, which I know he still struggles with. | 0:46:54 | 0:46:58
Rather than dwelling in the past, | 0:46:58 | 0:46:59
I'm truly hoping this build can give this family the fresh start I know | 0:46:59 | 0:47:03
they deserve and give them a chance to build a more positive future. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:08
Open your eyes. | 0:47:09 | 0:47:10
Your beautiful new fire. Do you know where you are in the house? No. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:28
Not yet, no. Have a look at your beautiful new kitchen. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:31
We've spoken to your occupational therapist in the design of this as well. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:40
If you choose to use your wheelchair to move about, | 0:47:40 | 0:47:43
you'll find the floors throughout the ground floor are all level | 0:47:43 | 0:47:46
and the doors are all wide enough for you to move around, if that's the way you would choose to go. | 0:47:46 | 0:47:51
If you want to stand up, like you are, you've got the work surface there. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:54
If you want to sit down and work, you've got a lower work surface to work there. | 0:47:54 | 0:47:58
The ovens are placed at the right height that you can use them standing up. | 0:47:58 | 0:48:02
Or if you are in the wheelchair, you can still use them sitting down. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:05
I'm going to have to go another way, I think. What do you make of it all? | 0:48:07 | 0:48:10
It's amazing. I'm speechless. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:13
This is... | 0:48:15 | 0:48:16
This is as much as I could ask for. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:19
What else did you need? I'm sorry. We haven't dealt with the thing you wanted. A downstairs loo. | 0:48:19 | 0:48:23
A downstairs toilet, yes. If you want to head off in that direction. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:26
Wow! | 0:48:33 | 0:48:35 | |
Not quite what you were expecting? I didn't know what to expect. | 0:48:39 | 0:48:45
It's nice. Very nice. I can't quite believe it's mine. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:51
So you need to turn around and open the door behind you. | 0:48:54 | 0:48:57
Rainforest... Rainforest shower. | 0:49:04 | 0:49:07
The people involved in this have gone the extra mile | 0:49:07 | 0:49:10
on everything they've done. I mean, the tiling is beautiful. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:14
All the workmanship that's gone in. So much work. | 0:49:14 | 0:49:17
This is like staying in a posh hotel. Yes. And it's yours. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:21
I don't feel like it's right. | 0:49:21 | 0:49:23
I'm thinking, OK, when do we check out? | 0:49:24 | 0:49:28
Oh, wow! We've tidied up the hallway a little bit. | 0:49:32 | 0:49:35
We kept your front door because we knew how much you loved that. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:38
So, your living room area. Let's have a look, shall we? | 0:49:38 | 0:49:40
All right? | 0:49:48 | 0:49:49
It's OK. | 0:49:52 | 0:49:54
It's a lot, isn't it? A lot to take in. | 0:50:09 | 0:50:12
What is it that's got to you? Something you're thinking has got to. | 0:50:15 | 0:50:18
It's not bricks and mortar that has suddenly made you emotional. It's something you are thinking. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:24
For people to come in here. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:26
Their effort. Their time. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
This is our first home. | 0:50:30 | 0:50:33
Just coming in and seeing pictures, proper pictures on the wall. | 0:50:33 | 0:50:37
What have these builders done for you? It's like a new life. | 0:50:37 | 0:50:40
Like being reborn. | 0:50:42 | 0:50:43
In return for this, will you make me one promise? | 0:50:43 | 0:50:46
You'll never use the expression again, "I've had my life". | 0:50:46 | 0:50:50
I promise you. I make that promise. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:53
Your wonderful young adults, | 0:50:53 | 0:50:55
when I was asking them about it, and I said, "What do you think?" | 0:50:55 | 0:50:59
And they said, "We hope this is going to be a brand-new beginning. | 0:50:59 | 0:51:02
"And Dad will be smiling more | 0:51:02 | 0:51:04
"and we'll be able to do family things and we will be able to | 0:51:04 | 0:51:07
"mix in together and just have a great Christmas," | 0:51:07 | 0:51:10
and those kinds of things. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:12
They are over the moon for you. Properly over the moon for you. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:15
They see this as a brand-new beginning. This is draw the line. | 0:51:15 | 0:51:18
New beginning? New beginning. | 0:51:18 | 0:51:21
We were very aware that we need it to work for you too, so when you are ready, open your eyes. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:27
You want a little look at the kitchen because I know | 0:51:35 | 0:51:38
the kitchen is an important part of family life, isn't it? | 0:51:38 | 0:51:41
I love it. It's crazy. It looks pretty, doesn't it? Yes. Oh, my God! | 0:51:41 | 0:51:46
It's really nice. Mum and Dad are going to love this. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:51
Dad's going to love that shower. Definitely. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:54
So how have we done so far? Brilliantly. Very good. | 0:51:55 | 0:52:01
The only thing we need to do now is go and look at the non-adult area because of course the upstairs | 0:52:01 | 0:52:06
now becomes yours. Ready to go and have a look? | 0:52:06 | 0:52:09
Yes. Come on then. | 0:52:09 | 0:52:10
Wow! It's amazing. | 0:52:15 | 0:52:19
We wanted to get as much cupboard space and space for you to | 0:52:20 | 0:52:23
put your computers, your music and all your other things in. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25
Very difficult in a short room to make all the space. Are you happy with it? | 0:52:25 | 0:52:29
It's really good. I didn't expect this at all. | 0:52:29 | 0:52:31
He's a bit gobsmacked, I think. Yes. He's very quiet, isn't he? | 0:52:31 | 0:52:36
Oh, my God! | 0:52:39 | 0:52:41
It's amazing. Wow! I love it. | 0:52:42 | 0:52:46
It's nice. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:52
Don't cry. Oh, my God. | 0:52:54 | 0:52:57
Obviously, the sewing kit because we know you like sewing. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:01
A table to do your work on or write love letters or whatever it is girls do. I don't know. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:06
A pretty bed. Do you like it? Yes. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:09
Do you want to see yours now? Yes. | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
Come on. | 0:53:14 | 0:53:16
Oh, my God! | 0:53:19 | 0:53:22
Pretty cool, huh? Yes. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:26
I never imagined it like this. | 0:53:28 | 0:53:31
Does this make it feel like a proper family home now? Yes, definitely. | 0:53:31 | 0:53:34
We couldn't imagine it, could we? No. | 0:53:36 | 0:53:39
Why do you think it's hit you so hard emotionally? | 0:53:39 | 0:53:42
Because it has just made it easier for everybody, especially Mum and Dad. | 0:53:42 | 0:53:46
We can finally start again and everything will be better. | 0:53:46 | 0:53:50
That's pretty cool, isn't it? Yes. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:54
You just need a bathroom now, don't you? | 0:53:54 | 0:53:57
You've got have a bathroom between you, haven't you? BOTH: Yes. | 0:53:57 | 0:54:00
Is there any chance Jordan will ever get any time in the bathroom? | 0:54:00 | 0:54:04
Probably not. Not with us two. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:06
Right, let's have a look at this bathroom. Come on. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:10
I love it! It's all ours! Pretty cool, isn't it? ALL: Yes. | 0:54:15 | 0:54:19
I'm glad you like it. I'm really glad you like it. | 0:54:19 | 0:54:22
Hi, daughter. All right? | 0:54:28 | 0:54:30
It's all right. Do you love it? Yes. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:32
I've got one other thing to show you. Come and have a look. | 0:54:32 | 0:54:36
Oh, my God! We've done slightly better than your old barbecue. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
What we've got is a full built-in barbecue kitchen for you. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:49
A nice little area for you to sit and have a glass of wine out here if you want to, of an evening. Kids. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:54
And if the parents want to come out and join too! | 0:54:54 | 0:54:56
Obviously, a nice table and chairs. | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
Raised beds all the way along again so if you wanted to work on them | 0:55:02 | 0:55:05
and plant your own veggies once the weather comes around, | 0:55:05 | 0:55:08
you can either do that sitting down or standing up because we put | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
the beds to exactly the right height for either. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:13
You'll notice you're getting along fine on the crutches | 0:55:13 | 0:55:16
going up and down the garden, but it works with the wheelchair as well. | 0:55:16 | 0:55:19
You can get all the way to the bottom of the garden and if | 0:55:19 | 0:55:21
we carry on to the end, you'll find the greenhouse has double doors. | 0:55:21 | 0:55:24
Oh, my God! | 0:55:24 | 0:55:26
What's it like seeing your dad walking around? Amazing. | 0:55:26 | 0:55:30
He's able to get up here without struggling which is good. | 0:55:30 | 0:55:33
It's going to be good for all of us. | 0:55:33 | 0:55:36
Good enough? | 0:55:36 | 0:55:38
LAUGHTER | 0:55:38 | 0:55:40
Say no more. | 0:55:40 | 0:55:42
APPLAUSE | 0:55:46 | 0:55:49
Obviously, I've spoken to some of you guys when it first started. | 0:56:07 | 0:56:12
All I want to say is, from the bottom of our hearts... | 0:56:12 | 0:56:16
..it's very humbling... | 0:56:17 | 0:56:21
APPLAUSE | 0:56:26 | 0:56:29
It's very humbling knowing that all you guys | 0:56:34 | 0:56:38
have spent time, your own free time on this project. | 0:56:38 | 0:56:44
It means so much and I could go on | 0:56:44 | 0:56:48
but I just want to thank every single one of you for the time | 0:56:48 | 0:56:53
and effort in making this a new beginning for us, | 0:56:53 | 0:56:58
especially for me, | 0:56:58 | 0:57:00
but thank you all... for a downstairs toilet. | 0:57:00 | 0:57:04
APPLAUSE | 0:57:04 | 0:57:05
Tell these guys what it means from your point of view for your mum and dad. | 0:57:12 | 0:57:16
After so long of going through so much trouble trying to get | 0:57:16 | 0:57:19
what we needed for him, it's just helped so much, | 0:57:19 | 0:57:23
and all of this has helped, their smiles on their faces. | 0:57:23 | 0:57:27
It's just helped a lot. | 0:57:27 | 0:57:30
APPLAUSE | 0:57:30 | 0:57:32
Cheers. Congratulations. Thanks. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:40
I hope you got what you wanted. | 0:57:40 | 0:57:43
Cheers. It's been a pleasure. | 0:57:43 | 0:57:46
Cracking people round here. | 0:57:46 | 0:57:48
It doesn't really matter whether you agree with what we send | 0:57:56 | 0:57:59
our young people in the forces around the world to do. | 0:57:59 | 0:58:02
They do their duty to the best of their ability, | 0:58:02 | 0:58:05
and if during the course of those duties, they suffer injuries, | 0:58:05 | 0:58:08
it's our responsibility as a society to look after them, isn't it? | 0:58:08 | 0:58:12
Somehow Mo and his family slipped through the net of support | 0:58:12 | 0:58:16
that should have been there for them. | 0:58:16 | 0:58:18
As a result, they needed someone else to help | 0:58:18 | 0:58:20
and it was their community that came together to do it for them | 0:58:20 | 0:58:23
and make a difference. And boy, what a difference! | 0:58:23 | 0:58:25
The man we met at the beginning of the week | 0:58:25 | 0:58:28
is a completely different man now, looking forward to a bright future | 0:58:28 | 0:58:31
with him and his family. | 0:58:31 | 0:58:33
That's pretty impressive. Maybe you know somebody who needs your help. | 0:58:33 | 0:58:36
