Because of what I'm going through, I feel like I've had my life.

0:00:040:00:07

To call it a day in your life at 46, that ain't right.

0:00:070:00:10

'We're here to help a soldier fight the biggest battle of all...'

0:00:100:00:15

You seem to have it in your head

0:00:150:00:16

that if you can't be the man you were, you're not a good dad.

0:00:160:00:19

It doesn't compute.

0:00:190:00:20

'..to face the future stripped of the life that defined him.'

0:00:200:00:23

You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured?

0:00:230:00:26

You know that, don't you? He thinks he's a burden to us.

0:00:260:00:29

I don't see him like that.

0:00:290:00:30

He's my dad, it doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair or not.

0:00:300:00:33

'We're rebuilding a home to give a family a chance for a new beginning.'

0:00:330:00:38

My worst fear is that he's going to try going down the stairs

0:00:380:00:41

and he's going to end up in the bottom of a pile.

0:00:410:00:43

This is just... It's going to blow their mind.

0:00:430:00:47

I am so, wow, pleased.

0:00:470:00:49

'But it's not going to be easy.'

0:00:490:00:51

There is a crack that wide down the brickwork trying to break

0:00:510:00:54

away from the house, taking next door and everything else with it.

0:00:540:00:57

With just nine days to do the job,

0:00:590:01:01

we're going to need a small army to carry it off.

0:01:010:01:04

And here they are!

0:01:040:01:05

This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:050:01:09

CHEERING

0:01:090:01:11

Maidstone, Kent is home to the Morris family - Mo, Jan,

0:01:250:01:29

and their three children, Charelle, Karissa and Jordan.

0:01:290:01:33

As a paratrooper for the Royal Engineers,

0:01:330:01:35

Mo devoted 20 years of his life to serving his country.

0:01:350:01:39

From war-torn Bosnia to humanitarian missions in Kenya, Mo spent

0:01:390:01:43

his whole career striving tirelessly to be the best of the best.

0:01:430:01:48

That was just my mentality. I just wanted to push all the time.

0:01:480:01:51

Sit-ups, press-ups, pull-ups, whatever.

0:01:510:01:53

I set the bar and then everyone was saying, "We've got to compete.

0:01:530:01:56

"We've got to beat Mo, we've got to beat Mo."

0:01:560:01:58

But I wouldn't let that happen.

0:01:580:02:00

But after two decades,

0:02:000:02:01

the gruelling demands of constant low-level parachute drops

0:02:010:02:04

started to take their toll on Mo's body.

0:02:040:02:07

Catastrophic nerve and ligament damage to his knees

0:02:070:02:11

left him in constant pain.

0:02:110:02:13

I kept on going, and yeah,

0:02:130:02:15

they eventually got me in for an op and basically all my ligaments,

0:02:150:02:18

crucial ligaments and everything else had just gone.

0:02:180:02:21

A few years down the line, they basically told me

0:02:210:02:23

that I'm going to be going through a medical discharge.

0:02:230:02:26

In one fell swoop, Mo not only lost his career, but the army

0:02:260:02:30

accommodation the family had called home since the children were born.

0:02:300:02:35

We had three children, no job, no income.

0:02:350:02:40

My husband was lucky enough to get a pension from the army,

0:02:400:02:43

but it would only just cover some of our bills.

0:02:430:02:46

For four years, the family struggled on in cramped,

0:02:460:02:49

temporary housing before scraping together every penny of Mo's

0:02:490:02:53

army disability pay out for a deposit on a family home.

0:02:530:02:56

Mo attempted to find work, but after a string of operations,

0:02:560:02:59

it was clear the damage to Mo's knees could not be repaired

0:02:590:03:03

and that doctors had done everything they could.

0:03:030:03:07

They've told me that I'm not going to get any better.

0:03:070:03:09

I've basically got to live with this and take the medication.

0:03:090:03:13

Because of so many operations, I've got severe nerve damage.

0:03:130:03:17

If I get any more operations,

0:03:170:03:19

I then have to resort to sitting in a wheelchair.

0:03:190:03:21

Mo now lives his life in constant pain,

0:03:240:03:27

confined to one room in a home totally

0:03:270:03:29

unsuitable for his needs, where even climbing the stairs to the

0:03:290:03:32

only loo is an excruciating ordeal.

0:03:320:03:36

We help Dad quite a lot.

0:03:360:03:37

Get around the house and getting up and down the stairs.

0:03:370:03:41

It's hard at times. Yeah.

0:03:410:03:45

My mum was having a lot of down moments. She cries a lot.

0:03:450:03:49

She comes home from work stressed.

0:03:490:03:52

It's not good for her.

0:03:520:03:54

But we get on with it, though.

0:03:540:03:58

It's clear this house is not just dragging Mo down

0:03:580:04:01

but the whole family, too.

0:04:010:04:03

They've somehow slipped through the net of support that should be

0:04:030:04:06

there for them from day one.

0:04:060:04:08

Seeing the predicament they were in, a friend of the family contacted us

0:04:080:04:11

on their behalf and we felt it wasn't right for anyone,

0:04:110:04:15

let alone a man who'd served his country, to live like this.

0:04:150:04:19

That's why we're here to help.

0:04:190:04:21

We did ask just for a downstairs toilet with the council,

0:04:210:04:25

and that's taken a while.

0:04:250:04:27

But we thought... Cos he started not drinking as much as you normally

0:04:270:04:32

would, because he knew that he'd have to go up and down the stairs.

0:04:320:04:35

Can't do that all day, though. That's what he does.

0:04:350:04:38

You don't drink anything all day because you can't go to the loo? Yeah.

0:04:380:04:41

I'm not asking for the world.

0:04:410:04:43

All we wanted was a downstairs toilet

0:04:430:04:45

so that I could go to the toilet as and when without any hassle.

0:04:450:04:50

I just wanted that bit of freedom for myself. Freedom and independence.

0:04:500:04:53

And I didn't want my kids staying in the house just to try

0:04:530:04:58

and help me get to the toilet.

0:04:580:05:01

I just wanted them to go out and enjoy themselves, because...

0:05:010:05:04

You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured?

0:05:040:05:07

You know that, don't you?

0:05:070:05:09

What, my kids? Yeah.

0:05:090:05:11

Oh...

0:05:110:05:13

They understand.

0:05:130:05:15

We'll have a chat about this at a different time.

0:05:190:05:23

I try and help him as much as I can,

0:05:230:05:25

but there's some stuff that I'm not physically able to help him with.

0:05:250:05:28

Like, I went to a hospital with him

0:05:280:05:30

when he had his operation and getting him back after that,

0:05:300:05:32

I've never seen him in pain like it before.

0:05:320:05:35

All right? MO: Yeah.

0:05:350:05:36

JORDAN: The amount of times I've heard him struggle to get in the bath

0:05:360:05:39

and there's been a little slip and my mum's just come

0:05:390:05:42

running because I haven't been able to have the strength to hold him,

0:05:420:05:46

we'd have to get two or three of us to help.

0:05:460:05:49

I've learnt to get on with it and love him for who he is, really.

0:05:490:05:53

Having a downstairs loo may sound like a small thing,

0:05:540:05:57

but for this family, it will be life-changing.

0:05:570:06:00

But we're not stopping there.

0:06:000:06:01

This whole house needs to work for Mo, no matter what the future holds.

0:06:010:06:06

It's going to improve Mo's life

0:06:060:06:10

and he's going to be able to move around freely and be mobile.

0:06:100:06:15

It's giving him the sense of being able to do more for himself,

0:06:150:06:20

so that he's got his pride and his dignity.

0:06:200:06:23

Mo's an incredibly proud man, which I know makes it

0:06:340:06:37

hard for him to accept help.

0:06:370:06:39

As a soldier, he's done enough for others around the world.

0:06:390:06:41

I know it's difficult, but this time

0:06:410:06:43

he's just got to let us do the same for him.

0:06:430:06:46

Make much of a difference, then, if we can actually sort this out?

0:06:460:06:49

Have you seen the programme?

0:06:490:06:51

ALL: Yeah. OK, so you know what goes on.

0:06:510:06:53

Are you excited about what the potential is? Very.

0:06:530:06:56

'It's time to get Mo, Jan and the family off.

0:06:570:07:00

'We've got just nine days, as usual, and the clock is already ticking.'

0:07:000:07:03

All right, then? Thank you very much.

0:07:030:07:06

Take it easy. We'll see you soon.

0:07:060:07:09

There you go, that's the family gone.

0:07:090:07:11

Time to the meet the builders.

0:07:110:07:13

'And the Maidstone trades haven't let us down!

0:07:140:07:17

'They've turned out in force.

0:07:170:07:18

'There must be at least 60 blokes on site this morning.

0:07:180:07:21

'Well, 59 blokes.'

0:07:210:07:22

We've got our first lady electrician, this is Clare.

0:07:220:07:26

That's Craig, that's Jordan, and that's... Harry. Harry.

0:07:260:07:30

I heard there was cakes. Would you like one? Yes, there are cakes. Yes.

0:07:300:07:33

He'd smelt them.

0:07:330:07:35

If you eat it quick enough, you can pretend you didn't eat it.

0:07:350:07:37

Thank you very much.

0:07:370:07:39

Very nice.

0:07:390:07:41

'Really, before you've even started?

0:07:410:07:43

'With all these people on site, the pace of the build is already

0:07:430:07:46

'cracking along, but some things aren't just about manpower.

0:07:460:07:49

'Concrete can only set so fast, so, these foundations

0:07:490:07:52

'for our planned extension had to be laid before we got here.'

0:07:520:07:55

You had to hand dig a lot of it, didn't you,

0:07:550:07:57

to avoid the services underneath?

0:07:570:07:59

Yeah, we hand dug, initially just to avoid the drainage and bore down.

0:07:590:08:02

We went down to five metres on these particular ones.

0:08:020:08:05

In view of the fact that we're not paying you for this, why would you get involved?

0:08:050:08:08

It's all about helping out those that haven't got the ability to do

0:08:080:08:12

what's needed to be done.

0:08:120:08:13

It's left to the likes of us and you to come and sort it out.

0:08:130:08:17

What do you make of the site now that you see it?

0:08:170:08:19

I think it's moving at an incredible pace, actually. I think it's fantastic.

0:08:190:08:23

'Only an hour in and the place already looks like a bomb's hit it.

0:08:230:08:26

'But there is a plan behind all this pandemonium

0:08:260:08:28

'and that's down to our designer Gabrielle.

0:08:280:08:30

'Her challenge is to redesign this house to work better for Mo.'

0:08:300:08:34

Yeah, this is as small as we can possibly, possibly make it.

0:08:340:08:38

We've squeezed... we've even done

0:08:380:08:39

thinner stub walls to divide this space.

0:08:390:08:41

'With his injuries getting progressively worse,

0:08:410:08:43

'he could end up wheelchair-bound, so we're making the whole

0:08:430:08:46

'downstairs wheelchair friendly, which is proving tricky.'

0:08:460:08:50

Another tight one for you.

0:08:500:08:51

Another one where your design skills to turn this into a TARDIS -

0:08:510:08:55

get more inside than there's space to put, if you know I mean.

0:08:550:08:58

Just trying to get everything you need for Mo in this

0:08:580:09:00

extension has been absolute hell.

0:09:000:09:02

It's really been millimetre by millimetre to get this to work.

0:09:020:09:05

It's been so frustrating for him, cos he just wants to contribute and do stuff.

0:09:050:09:08

He's just been trapped in this one room,

0:09:080:09:10

not being able to get stuck in and actually do things.

0:09:100:09:14

So, I hope we can change all that.

0:09:140:09:15

Gabby is not leaving an inch of this house untouched to get it

0:09:150:09:19

right for Mo and the family.

0:09:190:09:22

Downstairs, we're ripping out the kitchen

0:09:220:09:24

and knocking through into the existing dining room to

0:09:240:09:26

create a kitchen-diner the whole family can use together.

0:09:260:09:29

To the rear, we're building a timber-framed extension to give Mo

0:09:290:09:33

and Jan a downstairs bedroom and all-important

0:09:330:09:36

en suite wet room, so Mo doesn't have to negotiate the stairs.

0:09:360:09:39

With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs, it frees up a bedroom upstairs,

0:09:390:09:43

so the two girls can now have a room each

0:09:430:09:45

for the first time in their lives!

0:09:450:09:47

And Jordan's boxroom is getting some custom space-saving furniture.

0:09:470:09:51

Along with all this, we're putting in a brand-new family bathroom.

0:09:510:09:53

Last but not least, we're widening all the downstairs doorways

0:09:530:09:56

and creating a new entrance and pathway

0:09:560:09:59

to the side of the house, to allow for wheelchair access in case

0:09:590:10:01

Mo needs to use his chair in the future.

0:10:010:10:05

It's a gargantuan task and they only wanted a downstairs loo. Ha-ha!

0:10:050:10:09

Right, better get on with it and get this house cleared.

0:10:090:10:11

LAUGHTER

0:10:150:10:17

Here you go.

0:10:170:10:18

It's not heavy.

0:10:180:10:20

Something happened when I turned 50.

0:10:200:10:22

You're having pains and aches and stuff, are you?

0:10:220:10:24

You know when people pick something up from the floor, they go, "Eurrr..."

0:10:240:10:28

They make a noise when you lean down.

0:10:280:10:30

You do that, do you? I do that now.

0:10:300:10:31

I've done that for 20 years.

0:10:310:10:33

Are you saying I'm fat?

0:10:340:10:36

Eurrr...

0:10:360:10:37

Yeah, that's basically what it is.

0:10:370:10:40

'Marvellous. From one wide load to another -

0:10:400:10:42

'the timber-framed extension's arrived

0:10:420:10:44

'and it's as big-boned as our Devonian cousin.'

0:10:440:10:46

Isn't it a little bit over engineered for a timber frame?

0:10:460:10:50

It's well-engineered. It's well-engineered?

0:10:500:10:54

It's well-engineered, is what we're saying.

0:10:540:10:56

It's well-engineered. It's interesting.

0:10:560:10:58

When engineers do the job, they want to make sure that nothing goes wrong.

0:10:580:11:01

You could hang the Tyne Bridge off of this.

0:11:010:11:03

But, to be perfectly honest, it's not just supporting the timber-frame

0:11:030:11:06

extension, because we're removing all this back wall of the house.

0:11:060:11:09

We're taking that middle spine out and putting the steel

0:11:090:11:12

structure in, so all the pressure on the building is on this corner.

0:11:120:11:15

Oh, I see, yeah. And what's the brickwork like?

0:11:150:11:18

The brickwork is absolutely rubbish.

0:11:180:11:20

So the house is a bit crumbly.

0:11:200:11:22

This is not just holding a single-storey extension,

0:11:220:11:24

it's putting the strength back into the house again.

0:11:240:11:27

This house is crumbling like a bag of old biscuits,

0:11:270:11:29

but this massive amount of structural work is the only way

0:11:290:11:31

we can get everything sorted for Mo's needs.

0:11:310:11:35

Jules has just been given the instructions to take the wall

0:11:360:11:39

out below and put a steel in.

0:11:390:11:40

What we're looking at is that that wall isn't supporting

0:11:400:11:44

anything above the ceiling line and Jules has just correctly said

0:11:440:11:47

it'd be quicker to take the whole wall down from the top to the

0:11:470:11:51

floor and rebuild this in timber up here.

0:11:510:11:54

'Go on, son!

0:11:580:12:01

'We're pretty much taking out every internal wall in the whole

0:12:010:12:03

'house, but the trouble is, when you start peeling back

0:12:030:12:06

'the layers of a building, you never know what you're going to find.'

0:12:060:12:10

We have some interesting news for you. What's that?

0:12:100:12:13

The end of the building's trying to fall off. Which end of the building?

0:12:130:12:16

This end of the building here.

0:12:160:12:18

See if you can see the mistake.

0:12:180:12:20

Oh.

0:12:200:12:21

What do you notice that's missing?

0:12:210:12:24

There's nothing holding that thing up. Yes, yes.

0:12:240:12:27

"That thing" being the chimney.

0:12:270:12:29

That, just looking at it from here,

0:12:290:12:31

is the scariest thing I've seen all day, and that's saying something.

0:12:310:12:35

This will comfortably put us back by a day.

0:12:350:12:37

'This is a nightmare situation.

0:12:370:12:39

'The entire weight of the upstairs chimney stack is

0:12:390:12:41

'sitting on nothing more than these tired floorboards.'

0:12:410:12:45

This bit here is part of a chimney that did used to

0:12:450:12:48

go down through into the kitchen below and it does connect up with

0:12:480:12:51

the house next door, then goes up through the roof

0:12:510:12:54

and out into the open world.

0:12:540:12:56

All the weight's just wanting to go that way on the house now.

0:12:560:12:58

Taking the chimney next door and everything else with it.

0:12:580:13:01

The big difficulty is, there is a crack, a hole that wide,

0:13:010:13:04

running all the way down the brickwork, parting company up there,

0:13:040:13:07

which turns into this crack over here

0:13:070:13:11

and goes all the way down here, through this wall here, and

0:13:110:13:14

ends up downstairs in the kitchen below, below the stairs there.

0:13:140:13:17

But that's one of the problems with houses of this period.

0:13:180:13:21

All the mortar's died on them, they're all a bit tired,

0:13:210:13:23

the bricks have started to crumble.

0:13:230:13:25

When people make alterations, like, "Oh, we'll make the kitchen bigger,

0:13:250:13:29

"so we'll take the fireplace out, take the chimney breast out

0:13:290:13:31

"and just leave that one there..."

0:13:310:13:33

You just can't rip a chimney breast out

0:13:330:13:35

and leave it on floorboards.

0:13:350:13:38

So, apart from there being a chimney trying to fall into the kitchen,

0:13:380:13:41

the fact that the end of the building's trying to fall off,

0:13:410:13:43

that we've got a crack all the way down to the first floor,

0:13:430:13:46

and we can't get the padstone in, because the current one's

0:13:460:13:48

in the way, so we'll have to take the staircase out, it's all going very well?

0:13:480:13:52

Wonderfully well, yeah. Swimmingly.

0:13:520:13:54

It's a good day, really.

0:13:540:13:56

'What we need is an overview from Dappy from N-Dubz.'

0:13:560:13:59

Looking at the size of this job, I think it's going

0:13:590:14:02

to take a little bit longer than we usually do.

0:14:020:14:05

I know we do get it done in the end,

0:14:050:14:06

but I think this is going to take more than the nine days.

0:14:060:14:09

'Yes, thanks very much. This is the last thing we want.

0:14:090:14:12

'We're going to need some specialist help to get these cracks

0:14:120:14:16

'fixed, and that's really worrying with such a tight time frame.

0:14:160:14:19

'But everyone on site is doing what they can to solve the problem,

0:14:190:14:22

'as it's our one chance to get the house sorted for the family.'

0:14:220:14:28

Since he was medically discharged from the army ten years ago,

0:14:280:14:31

Mo has faced not only the loss of the career he loved,

0:14:310:14:34

but a life with limited mobility and constant pain.

0:14:340:14:38

It's tough, and ten years on he's still struggling to come to

0:14:380:14:42

terms with his injuries, both physically and psychologically.

0:14:420:14:46

When you add everything together,

0:14:480:14:50

how do you think the way you've been has affected the children and Jan?

0:14:500:14:55

I think about it all the time. I try and hide my emotions.

0:14:550:15:00

I try and keep all that away from them,

0:15:000:15:02

because if I wake up with a smile they think, "Oh, Dad's OK."

0:15:020:15:07

So they go out and do their thing.

0:15:070:15:08

Rather than say, "Look, kids, I'm in a bit of pain," and then, you know,

0:15:110:15:15

it's then them thinking, "Well, I better stay home with Dad."

0:15:150:15:19

Would that be a terrible thing?

0:15:190:15:22

I suppose it wouldn't be,

0:15:220:15:23

but I feel that I've now stopped them from doing what they want to do.

0:15:230:15:27

They do worry about you.

0:15:270:15:29

I know they worry, but I just don't want them to.

0:15:290:15:32

I don't want them to worry about me.

0:15:320:15:35

Can you imagine any situation where you'd stop worrying about them

0:15:350:15:38

if they were struggling with something?

0:15:380:15:40

I'd never stop worrying about them.

0:15:400:15:43

So, why should they stop worrying about you?

0:15:430:15:45

Because I feel that I've had my life,

0:15:450:15:48

whereas they're still trying to live theirs. Had your life? You're 46!

0:15:480:15:52

OK, OK, OK, I've still got time to go, it's just that at the moment

0:15:520:15:56

because I feel, because of what I'm going through,

0:15:560:15:59

I feel that I... I've basically come to a wall.

0:15:590:16:03

To call it a day in your life, at 46, ain't right.

0:16:030:16:07

Ain't right for you, ain't right for them, is it?

0:16:070:16:10

Oh, no, definitely. No.

0:16:100:16:11

You've got to find a way to see this as a new beginning.

0:16:110:16:14

You're toughest challenge -

0:16:140:16:16

the way that you will show your kids that you can conquer anything -

0:16:160:16:19

is get to get your head around this and conquer this.

0:16:190:16:22

And find something positive to do yourself.

0:16:220:16:24

So that you aren't saying that this is the end.

0:16:240:16:26

Yeah. Yeah, definitely. That's your toughest task ever. Yeah.

0:16:260:16:29

That's very hard.

0:16:290:16:31

I'm really starting to see the extent of the baggage

0:16:320:16:36

Mo is carrying with him and it's sad to see.

0:16:360:16:39

This build is about so much more than bricks and mortar.

0:16:390:16:42

But I can't help thinking all this work will be in vain

0:16:420:16:45

unless I can get Mo to see he has got a future

0:16:450:16:48

and a family who love him no matter what.

0:16:480:16:51

It's certainly been a first day full of stresses

0:16:510:16:53

and the large cracks we found are still very much hanging over us -

0:16:530:16:56

literally!

0:16:560:16:58

But at least we can get these steel girders in position

0:16:580:17:01

to give much-needed support to the back of the house,

0:17:010:17:03

so the whole thing doesn't fall down on our heads!

0:17:030:17:06

You're even paying for the steels?

0:17:060:17:08

You paid for the steels? Yes.

0:17:080:17:10

So you're working for us for nothing? Yeah.

0:17:100:17:12

And you paid for the steels? Yes.

0:17:120:17:15

Mate, I don't know what to say!

0:17:150:17:16

Why would you do a thing like that?

0:17:160:17:18

Just to help out. Yeah, that's a lot of money, though.

0:17:180:17:21

What size are we going, then?

0:17:210:17:23

Hang on, I am biggin' him up at the moment.

0:17:230:17:25

Give the man a moment! LAUGHTER

0:17:250:17:26

Give the man a moment in the sunshine.

0:17:260:17:29

No time for sentiment around here, is there?

0:17:290:17:31

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. No, it's no problem at all.

0:17:310:17:34

SHOUTS

0:17:350:17:37

CHEERING

0:17:390:17:40

Well, it's been a really interesting first day,

0:17:420:17:45

because the house has really fought us.

0:17:450:17:47

We got a lot done, but a lot of problems thrown up, too.

0:17:470:17:50

Two steps forward, one step back.

0:17:500:17:52

Mind you, seven o'clock at night,

0:17:520:17:54

you can't fault the commitment, can you?

0:17:540:17:56

Isn't it marvellous!

0:17:560:17:57

Morning. This morning is all about trying to stay warm.

0:18:060:18:09

It's...fff....freezing!

0:18:090:18:11

And they say there might be snow on the way.

0:18:110:18:14

It never ceases to amaze me the effort of the local trades

0:18:140:18:16

up and down the country,

0:18:160:18:18

and it's no different here in Maidstone -

0:18:180:18:20

they're here in droves.

0:18:200:18:22

Oh, it's snowing! See, I told you.

0:18:220:18:24

All pitching in to help and donating their time

0:18:240:18:26

to do the best they can for Mo and the family.

0:18:260:18:29

After ripping the guts out of the building yesterday,

0:18:290:18:31

we've now got to start to try and put everything back together.

0:18:310:18:34

Look, you talk to these bricks - they've had enough.

0:18:340:18:37

They've held this house up for over 100 years - they're tired.

0:18:370:18:40

When we're 100, we'll want to be rested, won't we?

0:18:400:18:43

I'm feeling a bit that way during this conversation, to be honest.

0:18:430:18:46

I think there's life in the old dog yet.

0:18:460:18:48

I'm talking about the house, not Billy.

0:18:480:18:50

Because of yesterday's cracks threatening to pull the house apart,

0:18:500:18:53

we've had to call in specialist structural fixers.

0:18:530:18:55

Until they get here, we've got to be super careful,

0:18:550:18:57

but there's still plenty to be getting on with outside.

0:18:570:19:00

A team of gas fitter have been working overnight

0:19:000:19:02

to put in a bigger pipe for the new boiler,

0:19:020:19:04

which will keep the house warmer for Mo during the day,

0:19:040:19:07

and crucially, with Jan the only earner, it will save them money.

0:19:070:19:10

You'll need more volume of gas, hence we've put in a bigger pipe.

0:19:100:19:13

These boys have been working all night?

0:19:130:19:16

Yeah, these have been here since... Good-looking bunch, aren't they? Oh, yeah.

0:19:160:19:19

These are the better-looking ones.

0:19:190:19:22

Did you have to hand-pick 'em from the... I did, yeah.

0:19:220:19:25

Modelling agency, yeah.

0:19:250:19:26

They normally model the balaclavas.

0:19:260:19:28

But, yeah, we've got 'em out.

0:19:280:19:30

When you were leaving school,

0:19:300:19:32

and you saw the careers officer,

0:19:320:19:34

was it "I want to work with gas"?

0:19:340:19:37

All my family have worked with gas.

0:19:370:19:39

Is that right? Gassy family. Yeah, a gassy family.

0:19:390:19:42

It's in my blood. The gas is in my blood.

0:19:420:19:45

Hope not, that's the bends, isn't it? If you get gas in your blood?

0:19:450:19:49

You meet some lovely people along the way, don't you?

0:19:490:19:51

With limited mobility, it's often difficult for Mo to leave the house unaided.

0:19:510:19:55

So the garden becomes a vital part of his world during the summer.

0:19:550:19:58

And we drafted in Rich and the team to transform every inch of it.

0:19:580:20:03

The first thing is to level the area to make a flat pathway for Mo

0:20:030:20:06

to get around the whole garden.

0:20:060:20:08

Mo and Jan love their gardening, so we're putting in raised beds

0:20:080:20:12

so Mo can tend his plants and veg more easily.

0:20:120:20:14

Along with this, we're putting in a special greenhouse

0:20:140:20:17

with wide doorways to give Mo easy access,

0:20:170:20:20

but it's tough work in these sub-zero temperatures.

0:20:200:20:23

The cold not affect you?

0:20:230:20:25

Do you not fancy maybe a job in an office?

0:20:250:20:27

Nice collar and tie, sandwich at lunchtime?

0:20:270:20:30

No, I don't do technology.

0:20:300:20:32

Photocopying your arse at the Christmas party?

0:20:320:20:34

Yeah, we do that. Oh, do you? THEY LAUGH

0:20:340:20:38

The single biggest problem with this build

0:20:380:20:40

is that the end of the building is trying to fall off.

0:20:400:20:43

It is really worrying,

0:20:430:20:44

but luckily for us, at extremely short notice,

0:20:440:20:47

a team of specialist fixers have turned up

0:20:470:20:50

to try and stop the house falling down around our ears.

0:20:500:20:52

So all this problem,

0:20:520:20:54

with the crack going right up through the house and into the loft,

0:20:540:20:57

this is how it's being solved? That's right, yeah.

0:20:570:20:59

You're stitching the wall together. Yes, yeah.

0:20:590:21:01

We'll be using a special grout, with a stainless steel bar,

0:21:010:21:05

and that will hold the wall.

0:21:050:21:07

We've gone from the base here, right the way through to the loft.

0:21:070:21:11

So that little twisting stainless steel rod is strong enough to hold all that together.

0:21:120:21:17

Oh, yeah. Very strong indeed.

0:21:170:21:19

That's absolutely brilliant.

0:21:190:21:20

Saved the day.

0:21:200:21:21

With luck, hopefully! THEY LAUGH

0:21:210:21:24

Absolutely fantastic.

0:21:240:21:25

'That wasn't an accident, that was a critical review.'

0:21:250:21:28

Shut up and get on with it.

0:21:280:21:29

That's the whole house well on the way

0:21:290:21:31

to being stitched back together.

0:21:310:21:33

It's brilliant news, and it means our timber-frame extension

0:21:330:21:36

can now be erected and fixed onto the rear of the building.

0:21:360:21:39

And this little house really needs the extra space.

0:21:390:21:43

Have you seen Julian through the hole? Julian?

0:21:430:21:47

Thank you very much. Appreciate your work. Thank you very much.

0:21:480:21:51

These guys put all the chemical fixing in, held the end wall on,

0:21:510:21:54

held the chimney on - done all that. In, out, in a day.

0:21:540:21:57

We've got a building that will stay standing now. Very lovely of them.

0:21:570:22:00

Very lovely of them. Top blokes. Lovely lads.

0:22:000:22:03

By the way, could I have a 99 with strawberry sauce? Strawberry sauce?

0:22:030:22:06

Yeah.

0:22:060:22:07

There you are, son. Beautiful, thanks very much. ?7.80.

0:22:090:22:13

I should've asked if he had a flake, or crushed nuts.

0:22:130:22:16

With the build now back on track, we can start to fit

0:22:160:22:18

one of the special features Gabriel is putting in for Mo -

0:22:180:22:22

a wood-burning stove.

0:22:220:22:23

So, Ben, my darling. You found us a log burner. I have, yes.

0:22:240:22:28

For the dining room. I'm so excited.

0:22:280:22:30

Can I have a look at the drawing?

0:22:300:22:32

What we were hoping is, with these raised legs,

0:22:320:22:34

it will be more accessible for Mo if he needed to be in a wheelchair.

0:22:340:22:37

That's right. So will that still work in the arch we've got?

0:22:370:22:40

We will make it work.

0:22:400:22:42

That's the attitude we're getting all over the site.

0:22:420:22:44

Everyone has been touched by Mo's situation,

0:22:440:22:46

and is going the extra mile for him and the family.

0:22:460:22:50

It was family friend Alison who originally contacted the show.

0:22:500:22:53

He's not a man that takes easily to having people help him, though, is he? No.

0:22:530:22:58

I wrote that e-mail and it was sitting on my computer

0:22:580:23:01

for about two weeks,

0:23:010:23:02

and I was like, "No, I shouldn't be sending this."

0:23:020:23:05

Because I know how proud they are.

0:23:050:23:07

But now I've seen it, and now it's really happening,

0:23:070:23:09

I'm so excited. Just so excited for them.

0:23:090:23:12

What do you make of the fact you've got, like, 70 blokes on site,

0:23:120:23:15

giving all their time free, and all these materials and everything?

0:23:150:23:18

It's amazing! I can't believe how many people are here.

0:23:180:23:21

I don't think they've got any idea how big the changes are they're making.

0:23:210:23:24

All they wanted, really, was a downstairs toilet.

0:23:240:23:27

So, this is just going to blow their mind.

0:23:270:23:30

And the girls, and Jordan, it's going to be brilliant.

0:23:300:23:34

Since Mo left the army ten years ago, both Charelle and Karissa

0:23:340:23:38

have seen their dad's condition deteriorate.

0:23:380:23:40

It's a hard situation for everyone

0:23:400:23:43

but if the new house design can give Mo more independence,

0:23:430:23:46

it will take so much pressure off the rest of the family -

0:23:460:23:49

and that's down to Gabrielle to get it right.

0:23:490:23:52

It is tough with him because he's got it in his head that he's OK.

0:23:530:23:57

So he's trying to get around everywhere when he knows...

0:23:570:24:00

his body knows he can't, but he thinks he can.

0:24:000:24:03

So, yeah, to help him, his body, physically

0:24:030:24:05

and mentally, to know that he can get around...

0:24:050:24:09

So how does he get up and down the stairs at the moment?

0:24:090:24:12

It did take all of us to get him upstairs once, didn't it? Yeah.

0:24:120:24:17

And it hurt a lot. So we were... "Oh!"

0:24:170:24:20

But you can't... It's hard, because we can't help more than we can.

0:24:200:24:24

You feel like what you're doing for him isn't enough,

0:24:240:24:27

that you can't take that pain away from him, so...

0:24:270:24:30

You kind of have to just deal with that,

0:24:300:24:32

and help as much as you can.

0:24:320:24:35

But them stairs really do hurt him.

0:24:350:24:37

Last time we met we talked a little bit about your dad

0:24:370:24:40

and using a wheelchair. And I know that that is a really...

0:24:400:24:44

He doesn't want to use it. No. And why should he?

0:24:460:24:49

We were talking about him being stuck in the hallway.

0:24:490:24:51

Once he's in his wheelchair he can't move around the whole house, can he?

0:24:510:24:55

And he just burst into tears. He thinks he's a burden to us. Yeah.

0:24:550:25:00

It's really sad because I don't see him like that.

0:25:020:25:05

He's my Dad. It doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair.

0:25:050:25:07

The fact that he came out with the fact that he thinks he's a burden was really upsetting,

0:25:070:25:12

because I don't think he is.

0:25:120:25:14

I don't want him to feel like that at all.

0:25:140:25:16

I just think if we had more space for him so he wasn't trapped in one room,

0:25:160:25:20

that would be a really big, positive change.

0:25:200:25:24

And just warm everything up a bit.

0:25:240:25:26

Just make that lay out work so he's not having to fight the house. Yeah. Yeah.

0:25:260:25:31

It's clear listening to the girls how much they love their dad

0:25:330:25:36

and how much they want to help him.

0:25:360:25:39

But it's tough for a proud man to accept help,

0:25:390:25:42

especially from your children.

0:25:420:25:44

Morning!

0:25:460:25:48

The sun is out, the snow is gone and we are at the halfway stage.

0:25:480:25:52

Look at this timber-frame extension. It's up in just a few days. Amazing!

0:25:520:25:55

It's the biggest size planning regs would allow, and we're trying to maximise every inch of living area.

0:25:550:26:00

So instead of a traditional brick system,

0:26:000:26:03

we're using a clever space-saving thing which simply slots together.

0:26:030:26:06

The rear of the garden has now been levelled to allow better

0:26:060:26:10

access for Mo and a new pathway created, which is handy,

0:26:100:26:12

as what's going to sit up the end of said pathway is just arriving.

0:26:120:26:16

Good morning. Good morning, gentlemen.

0:26:160:26:19

What is so special about this greenhouse then?

0:26:190:26:22

This greenhouse is modified for wheelchair access.

0:26:220:26:25

It has got a lower threshold. Have you got one in your own house?

0:26:250:26:28

I haven't got one. Have you not? No. You're joking!

0:26:280:26:31

I've got a very small garden.

0:26:310:26:33

Why did you want to contribute this to the job?

0:26:350:26:37

In the past, I've had hard times and people have given me a leg up

0:26:370:26:40

and that sort of thing. Let's help this family out.

0:26:400:26:43

Let's give them a greenhouse. You're a gentleman and a scholar.

0:26:430:26:46

Very nice.

0:26:480:26:50

Seems like we haven't got rid of all the cracks in this household.

0:26:500:26:53

The extension is up, the roof is on it, amazingly.

0:26:550:26:58

There's a stud wall going in. The floor is being prepared.

0:26:580:27:01

Plumbing and electrics in in this room.

0:27:010:27:03

New window being built and a new door has already been punched through.

0:27:030:27:06

Up here, the bathroom is taking shape.

0:27:060:27:08

We've built a bathroom and the plumbing is in.

0:27:080:27:11

There is a bit of plastering prep going on.

0:27:110:27:13

There is plastering going on here. It looks like a plaster floor.

0:27:130:27:16

It most certainly is and do you mind leaving? Yes. I best get out of the way. Busy though, isn't it?

0:27:160:27:22

They are a bit like that, plasterers. They want their space.

0:27:220:27:25

By tonight, it will be plasterboarded.

0:27:250:27:28

And skimmed. So this area will have a kitchen in it tomorrow.

0:27:280:27:32

There's 16 hungry plasterers, having it. You watch. You wait.

0:27:320:27:36

I used to be a cab driver, a taxi driver. Do you know why I packed up?

0:27:390:27:42

Why? I didn't like people talking behind my back!

0:27:420:27:45

Talking behind my back! Yes? No? Nothing. Tough crowd.

0:27:470:27:51

With the greenhouse up, the garden is really starting to take shape now

0:27:530:27:56

and along with the usual suspects, we're being helped out today by some of Jan's mates from work.

0:27:560:28:01

Including best friend Lynn.

0:28:010:28:03

How has it been for Jan these last few years?

0:28:050:28:08

It's been harder for Jan than anybody knows.

0:28:080:28:11

Because people see Mo's disability

0:28:120:28:14

but they don't see what Janet copes with.

0:28:140:28:17

She works full-time, she is a mother. She does absolutely everything.

0:28:170:28:21

She deserves this and Mo does. But especially her.

0:28:220:28:26

She's going to love it.

0:28:300:28:32

It's clear Jan and Mo have lots of friends.

0:28:320:28:36

Jan has been there through all Mo's battles with injury,

0:28:360:28:39

the stress of leaving the army and adapting back into civilian life.

0:28:390:28:43

Working hard to not only look after Mo, but raise a family

0:28:430:28:47

and keep a roof over their heads.

0:28:470:28:50

You can see the kids are worried about him.

0:28:500:28:52

Worried about, you know, how he is within himself.

0:28:520:28:55

My worst fear is after he's had an operation that he's going to try

0:28:550:28:59

and go down the stairs and end up at the bottom of a pile.

0:28:590:29:02

And you are going to walk into that? Yes. That is why I ring him every day. I phone him every day.

0:29:030:29:08

This has been very hard on you, all this, hasn't it?

0:29:080:29:10

Do you see light at the end of the tunnel?

0:29:200:29:22

I don't necessarily see light at the end of the tunnel.

0:29:250:29:28

I see it as, this is how life is.

0:29:310:29:34

What do you make of the fact that all of these

0:29:360:29:38

builders are in there, changing things around you and the family?

0:29:380:29:41

It's amazing but I can't quite...

0:29:410:29:44

I can hear you saying it but in my head it's sort of like, why?

0:29:440:29:49

Because they think what's happened to him is unfair and they think

0:29:490:29:53

they can put themselves out and make a difference.

0:29:530:29:56

They will be making a difference all right.

0:29:560:29:58

You wait until you see it. It's lovely.

0:30:050:30:07

I'm not supposed to give anything away but it is lovely.

0:30:090:30:12

It will make life easier for you and the kids and Mo.

0:30:140:30:18

And maybe you will see it as a new beginning. I hope so.

0:30:180:30:21

Well, I told her a bit of a white lie.

0:30:300:30:33

The house doesn't look great at the moment,

0:30:330:30:35

but it will do and that is thanks to everyone on site, including Chris

0:30:350:30:39

and his team of 16 plasterers who have put in a monumental effort,

0:30:390:30:43

which is great news as we've only got three days left.

0:30:430:30:46

That is the way to skim a kitchen. It wouldn't happen in the real world, would it?

0:30:460:30:50

Just goes to prove you don't have to wear a cape to be a superhero.

0:30:530:30:56

With every inch of this house plastered, we can start to turn our thoughts to kitting the place out.

0:30:580:31:02

There's a new kitchen going in,

0:31:020:31:04

which has been specially designed for Mo, with an eye-level oven

0:31:040:31:08

and low work surface to make baking, one of his passions, easier for him.

0:31:080:31:12

And talking of cakes. Can we interest you in....

0:31:120:31:16

Look at that! Or maybe... Or maybe...

0:31:160:31:19

That's enough. No. Wait! Or maybe...

0:31:190:31:22

I'm going to have a banoffee. You made all of these, did you?

0:31:220:31:25

Thank you very much. That's very kind of you. Thank you very much. Very clever. I couldn't make those.

0:31:250:31:30

Have you got someone here working on the build? Yes. My dad and my brother.

0:31:300:31:34

What about your girl? I know.

0:31:340:31:35

I'm the chief cake taster! Is that your job, is it? Yes.

0:31:350:31:38

My brother actually likes baking bacon and cheese muffins.

0:31:380:31:43

Bacon and cheese muffins? That sounds nice. That's tomorrow.

0:31:430:31:47

That's tomorrow! What?

0:31:470:31:50

We don't believe a bacon and cheese muffin can taste nice.

0:31:520:31:56

No, not at all. No, I'm not having that.

0:31:560:31:59

That would just be weird, wouldn't it? I'd like to see you try!

0:31:590:32:03

What do you mean, hint? What hint?

0:32:060:32:08

With the new Mo-friendly lay out of the house taking shape,

0:32:080:32:11

we can start to see how the design is going to help him in the future.

0:32:110:32:15

To get this right, we have been working closely with Mo's

0:32:150:32:18

occupational therapist, Francis.

0:32:180:32:20

So what do you think? It looks brilliant.

0:32:200:32:23

I can't believe the difference.

0:32:230:32:25

I came on Friday and it wasn't even plastered then.

0:32:250:32:28

The kitchen wasn't in. The space, the doors are wide. It's excellent.

0:32:280:32:32

So not only does it look beautiful, it's actually effective for Mo.

0:32:320:32:36

Yes. He will be able to...

0:32:360:32:38

If he's using his wheelchair, he'll be able to get around.

0:32:380:32:43

He can enter the bedroom, he can enter the bathroom, use the kitchen, use the oven.

0:32:430:32:48

We are designing it for wheelchair use because it makes life easier

0:32:480:32:51

for him if he uses a wheelchair at least some of the time.

0:32:510:32:54

Yes, and we don't know what the future holds.

0:32:540:32:56

I think it's good that we make sure we meet his current needs

0:32:560:33:00

and longer-term needs as well.

0:33:000:33:02

Coming to terms with leaving the Armed Forces and re-entering

0:33:040:33:07

Civvy Street is tough enough, even without Mo's injuries.

0:33:070:33:11

Helping him through that transition has been his old friend and ex-Royal Engineer, Roy.

0:33:110:33:16

Tell us about Mo himself. He strikes us as a very solid, very likeable lad.

0:33:160:33:20

But he seems to be finding it difficult to come to terms

0:33:200:33:22

with the fact that he can't go running and jogging

0:33:220:33:25

and doing all the things he did before.

0:33:250:33:27

When I first met him, he had a slight injury,

0:33:270:33:29

which a lot of ex-servicemen have.

0:33:290:33:31

I've known him over 20 years. He was a really fit character.

0:33:310:33:36

But over the years, the injury has worsened and worsened and also,

0:33:360:33:40

it's dragging poor old Jan down as well.

0:33:400:33:43

She has been solid all the way through.

0:33:430:33:46

But, you know, it's a strain on her as well.

0:33:460:33:50

I can see by the way you're talking about him,

0:33:500:33:52

you are very emotional about the family and about him. Yes.

0:33:520:33:56

What do you make of what we've done?

0:33:560:33:58

Well, we've destroyed it so far but you know where we are heading.

0:33:580:34:01

It looks fantastic. I'm so... Wow! Pleased.

0:34:010:34:04

I am so... Words...

0:34:040:34:08

I'm filling up.

0:34:080:34:10

Sorry. Come with me. Grab a crash hat and I'll show you what we are up to.

0:34:110:34:16

The last time I spoke to Mo, he told me he'd had his life.

0:34:160:34:21

At 46, he thinks his injuries have robbed him of a future.

0:34:210:34:24

It's just not right.

0:34:240:34:26

And it's this which has been playing on my mind throughout the build

0:34:260:34:30

and I must admit I'm struggling to try and help Mo find a way of moving forward.

0:34:300:34:34

So I've contacted a close ex-army mate of mine, Ken Haines,

0:34:340:34:38

who's been working with ex-servicemen, many of whom are injured, to see if he can help.

0:34:380:34:42

If we can somehow get Mo to see this build as a fresh start,

0:34:420:34:46

I'm hoping it will at least be a foundation for a brighter future for him and the family.

0:34:460:34:51

I'm just hoping Ken can relate to Mo in a way I can't.

0:34:510:34:56

I'm going to get you down to Bristol to come and see the guys down at my place.

0:34:560:35:00

Some of them are very much like you.

0:35:000:35:02

"I don't want to be a burden", all that kind of stuff. That is not right.

0:35:020:35:06

You are entitled to your life. You are entitled to your aspirations.

0:35:060:35:10

You are entitled to enjoy your life.

0:35:100:35:13

Because at the end of the day, if you don't,

0:35:130:35:15

it's going to have a detrimental effect on you in the long-term.

0:35:150:35:18

It will drive you into the ground. It will drive you into the ground.

0:35:180:35:22

The aim is to go up. The only way is up.

0:35:220:35:24

I like my family to enjoy what they are doing.

0:35:240:35:27

Going with their friends and doing whatever.

0:35:270:35:29

For my son, if he wants to go to a match or a party or whatever,

0:35:290:35:34

I don't want him at home staying with me,

0:35:340:35:36

pushing me around the house or taking me to the toilet.

0:35:360:35:39

You know they don't just cope with you. You know that they love you.

0:35:390:35:43

You're not something they have to cope with.

0:35:430:35:45

From my early time, I missed a lot of their...

0:35:450:35:48

The growing up. Yes.

0:35:520:35:54

Of course you did, because you were away serving your country.

0:35:540:35:57

I wanted to be with them and do things.

0:36:010:36:03

So when you then came out of the army and had the time to do them, you weren't physically able to.

0:36:050:36:10

Yes, definitely. You are terribly hard on yourself. You just got hurt.

0:36:100:36:16

It's your service that hurt you but that's not your fault.

0:36:160:36:18

That's not your fault. There are a lot of people who got injured badly.

0:36:180:36:24

A lot of people who had niggly injuries they can never get rid of that saw them

0:36:240:36:28

being invalided out of the armed services, but it's not their fault. Definitely not their fault.

0:36:280:36:33

You can't keep being angry with yourself because of the situation you are in.

0:36:330:36:37

I will give you a cast-iron guarantee that when you go back to your house,

0:36:370:36:41

it will be absolutely perfectly usable for you to move and spend time with your family.

0:36:410:36:46

So you are going to have to do some promising in return,

0:36:460:36:49

to maybe think again about some sense of forgiving yourself for getting yourself into this situation

0:36:490:36:54

because you can't keep going through life thinking like that.

0:36:540:36:58

And I promise you that I'll give you all the help I can to get you that support.

0:36:580:37:02

Back on the site, every single person is also doing what

0:37:090:37:12

they can to help Mo, working into the night to give him the independence he deserves.

0:37:120:37:17

Everything in the house is being fine-tuned for Mo and the rest

0:37:180:37:21

of the family to make his home life as easy and stress-free as possible.

0:37:210:37:26

Do you think that looks right or do you want it lower?

0:37:260:37:29

It can come down six inches. But for the wheelchair...

0:37:290:37:32

Looks wise, it would be better a bit lower but I think for Mo, this is better.

0:37:320:37:35

In the new extension, the wet room is really starting to look the business.

0:37:350:37:39

We are doing the final polish of the tiles with the sweatshirt. I like to see a tradesman!

0:37:390:37:44

I tell you what, you knocked that out in record time, didn't you?

0:37:440:37:48

Nice! What do you think, Christopher? It's somewhere to wash, isn't it? That's nice!

0:37:480:37:52

Praise indeed! In many ways, your builder is defined by his headwear.

0:37:520:37:56

I've become rather attached to mine, although I can't say Julian has.

0:37:560:37:59

You're saying this hat is not working for me? I look bad in a hat, is that what you're saying?

0:37:590:38:04

Terrible. If accentuates your features. And you don't think that's a good thing?

0:38:040:38:08

I don't think that's a good thing, no. You're nothing without your hair.

0:38:080:38:13

I like the brushed forward look. See what I mean?

0:38:130:38:15

It's a better look, is it?

0:38:150:38:17

It's like a really bad toupee when you do that.

0:38:170:38:20

He looks a bit like Jim Carrey like that.

0:38:200:38:22

With me, it's all about looks. And him!

0:38:240:38:27

Look, the kitchen is just about done.

0:38:280:38:30

Great vibe on the site, isn't it? It's great. I'd love to do another one. Would you? Really? I would.

0:38:300:38:35

Without a doubt. Isn't that amazing?

0:38:350:38:37

We've just taken advantage of the man for several days

0:38:370:38:40

to work in the most uncomfortable environment possible, to put in this

0:38:400:38:43

beautiful kitchen for no pay at all, and you want to come and do another one. Why not?

0:38:430:38:47

That's the great British builder, that is.

0:38:480:38:50

Wonderful!

0:38:520:38:53

It's the final day and we are almost there.

0:38:580:39:00

How are we getting on with the job? Are we going to get it finished?

0:39:000:39:03

ALL: Yes. Fairly confident? ALL: Yes. Lovely. All right.

0:39:030:39:06

Don't be fooled. We may sound a little deflated on the outside

0:39:080:39:11

but just like this mattress, inside we are raring to go.

0:39:110:39:14

It has been vacuum-packed. All the air's been sucked out of it, which shrinks it right up.

0:39:140:39:19

As soon as you cut the seal, the air rushes in and it expands and fills up.

0:39:190:39:23

It's like getting up in the morning and stretching out.

0:39:230:39:26

Give it another go now, Bill.

0:39:260:39:28

That is it. That is me. Anyone want to join me?

0:39:300:39:34

I'll take you down the gym!

0:39:360:39:38

But the morning has not started well for one of us - our designer, Gabriel.

0:39:390:39:43

Just to let you know, your lights, your bedside lights, they still haven't arrived.

0:39:440:39:48

Why did he have to come and tell me that right now when you're here?

0:39:480:39:52

Why are we having bedside lights delivered on the last day?

0:39:520:39:55

Because they were apparently delivered earlier in the week, but actually in real life they weren't.

0:39:550:40:00

How lame does that sound? So technically, they weren't delivered.

0:40:010:40:05

On the delivery note it said they were here but they weren't here.

0:40:050:40:08

We will be done in time, won't we? Or are we in the double jeopardy...

0:40:080:40:12

Do I need to say something, like they do on telly,

0:40:120:40:15

"Will we finish in time?"

0:40:150:40:18

I mean, obviously, you know we've never had one where we haven't finished in time

0:40:180:40:21

and if we had, we would just work into the middle of the night to get it done.

0:40:210:40:25

But you could play along too.

0:40:250:40:27

If I do some jeopardy now, because telly people like jeopardy so when we come to edit this together,

0:40:270:40:31

if I do a jeopardy thing now, "Will we finish or won't we?"

0:40:310:40:34

DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:40:340:40:36

But we will finish, won't we? We will finish, but I want it to look beautiful and perfect.

0:40:380:40:42

I've spent a long time trying to get it beautiful and perfect.

0:40:420:40:45

I just saw Katie. It's fine.

0:40:450:40:48

The bedside tables haven't turned up either.

0:40:480:40:51

Oh, dear! It's going to be a long day and a long night by the sounds of it.

0:40:520:40:56

But before we show off the house to the family tomorrow,

0:40:560:40:59

I really need to do just one last thing.

0:40:590:41:01

Being a dad myself, I know how tricky it can sometimes be for fathers and sons

0:41:010:41:05

to get through to each other, to tell each other how they feel.

0:41:050:41:08

It's important for me to try and get Mo to see that Jordan doesn't

0:41:080:41:12

need him to be Superman, just a dad.

0:41:120:41:15

He loves him for who he is.

0:41:150:41:17

You are in a unique position here that he's watching television and he

0:41:170:41:20

can't interrupt you, so what is the one thing you would say to your dad?

0:41:200:41:23

I just want him to be safe and be able to get about

0:41:230:41:26

and have his own independence and enjoy his life. Be happy.

0:41:260:41:30

Be happy, yes. He thinks he's a burden on us.

0:41:300:41:33

We tell him he's not in our way. We are doing it because we love him.

0:41:330:41:36

Even though it's hurting him he'll still go around on his crutches, regardless.

0:41:360:41:41

Your message to him is, you love him and he's not a burden. Yes.

0:41:410:41:46

He'll hear that now. Good.

0:41:490:41:51

Are you looking forward to tomorrow? Are you looking forward to seeing the house? Very.

0:41:510:41:55

What is it that you need? Downstairs toilet. That's it, really.

0:41:550:42:00

It has always been that, hasn't it? Yes.

0:42:000:42:02

He's struggled with that for so long.

0:42:020:42:04

So anything above a downstairs toilet would be a bonus? Yeah.

0:42:040:42:09

Big bonus.

0:42:110:42:13

They are not asking for much, are they?

0:42:130:42:16

It's the final push and we can start to see the culmination of all this hard work.

0:42:160:42:20

In the back garden, Rich and the team are just putting

0:42:200:42:23

the finishing touches to a brilliant new outdoor kitchen.

0:42:230:42:26

Look at this! I haven't seen this before. Barbecue built by the chaps. Outdoor kitchen.

0:42:260:42:32

And it will work whether he is standing or sitting, won't it? Yes.

0:42:320:42:35

It's exactly the right height for both.

0:42:350:42:37

That is quite something, that is. How has it been then?

0:42:370:42:40

We are getting towards the end of it now and you have been here from the beginning,

0:42:400:42:44

so what do you make of it all? I've really enjoyed it.

0:42:440:42:46

It's amazing what gets done and the effort that everybody puts in.

0:42:460:42:49

It is one big team effort. Yes, loved it.

0:42:490:42:52

Have you really? Yes, I have. This is really looking the part.

0:42:520:42:55

I can't wait to see it when it's all tidied up and we can show it to them. Amazing. Thank you, chaps.

0:42:550:43:00

And in the dining room, there's just one last thing to fit.

0:43:010:43:04

Not only have brothers Mark and Steve donated the steel girders

0:43:040:43:07

holding up the room we're standing in,

0:43:070:43:09

they have designed and built this handmade metallic masterpiece.

0:43:090:43:13

Look at that! What you think? That's lovely. It finishes it off lovely.

0:43:130:43:18

It looks beautiful. That is lovely. That's the best thing I've seen all day.

0:43:180:43:23

APPLAUSE

0:43:230:43:24

Even at this late stage,

0:43:250:43:27

the generosity of the trades here in Maidstone is amazing to see.

0:43:270:43:31

But what a difference this will make to the lives of one family.

0:43:310:43:35

Just nine days ago,

0:43:420:43:44

we arrived here in Maidstone to find a family at crisis point.

0:43:440:43:48

Mo's 20 year army career had left him

0:43:480:43:51

with sustained injuries that, even after countless operations,

0:43:510:43:54

were getting progressively worse,

0:43:540:43:56

leaving him a virtual prisoner in his own home.

0:43:560:43:59

Because of what I'm going through, I feel that I've had my life.

0:43:590:44:02

To call it a day in your life, at 46, isn't right.

0:44:020:44:06

Even with the love and support of his family,

0:44:060:44:09

Mo was still suffering in a house which was clearly unfit for his needs.

0:44:090:44:12

It was a situation we could never have solved on our own

0:44:130:44:16

and it's only due to the monumental effort of an army of local Maidstone trades that we've done it.

0:44:160:44:22

We've knocked through and completely opened up the downstairs

0:44:220:44:25

to create this open-plan kitchen diner which is now a space

0:44:250:44:28

the whole family can use together.

0:44:280:44:31

The Shaker style kitchen combines simple elegant lines with the lowered work surface

0:44:310:44:35

and raised oven to make cooking as easy as possible for Mo.

0:44:350:44:41

There's a super efficient wood-burning stove, helping give this house added warmth,

0:44:410:44:45

which massively helps with Mo's knee pain.

0:44:450:44:48

It's finished with raised legs so Mo can reach the door more easily.

0:44:480:44:52

Above all else, the aim of this build was to solve

0:44:550:44:58

the problem of Mo having to use the stairs.

0:44:580:45:00

To do this, we have added a ground floor extension to the rear of the house,

0:45:000:45:04

allowing us to create a master bedroom suite for Mo and Jan.

0:45:040:45:07

There's now a downstairs wet room, complete with rainforest shower

0:45:090:45:12

and wheelchair access in case Mo needs to use his chair in the future.

0:45:120:45:16

And of course, the most important feature of all - the downstairs loo.

0:45:160:45:20

The front room is finished in neutral tones with

0:45:220:45:25

accents of colour on the cushions and curtains.

0:45:250:45:28

We've added these simple but stylish built-in shelving units either side of the old fireplace,

0:45:280:45:33

which is pretty much the only thing we left standing in the entire house.

0:45:330:45:37

With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs,

0:45:400:45:41

upstairs has now become a parent-free zone.

0:45:410:45:44

Charelle and Karissa now have a bedroom each for the first time in their lives.

0:45:440:45:49

Charelle's room has a classical yet relaxed feel,

0:45:490:45:52

which is very much in keeping with the period of the house.

0:45:520:45:55

Whilst Karissa's room is finished in soft blues,

0:45:550:45:58

offset with simple but timeless bedroom furniture.

0:45:580:46:02

Jordan's room has been transformed with this stunning

0:46:020:46:05

custom-made shelving unit for his games console and TV.

0:46:050:46:10

And the old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished

0:46:110:46:15

with these cool subway tiles.

0:46:150:46:17

Outside, the entire garden has now been redesigned and I've got

0:46:180:46:22

to say, Rich and the lads have really gone the extra mile.

0:46:220:46:25

They've created this superb new outdoor kitchen area so Mo

0:46:250:46:29

and Jan can have their friends over for a barbecue in the summer months.

0:46:290:46:34

The whole garden has been levelled and we've used railway sleepers

0:46:340:46:37

to create these stylish raised beds to make gardening easier for Mo.

0:46:370:46:41

Along with this, we've put in an amazing greenhouse with wide

0:46:410:46:44

access doorway and automatic temperature adjustment.

0:46:440:46:48

The real challenge with this build was not only making Mo's home

0:46:480:46:51

environment better, but also trying to help Mo confront his injuries

0:46:510:46:54

and civilian life, which I know he still struggles with.

0:46:540:46:58

Rather than dwelling in the past,

0:46:580:46:59

I'm truly hoping this build can give this family the fresh start I know

0:46:590:47:03

they deserve and give them a chance to build a more positive future.

0:47:030:47:08

Open your eyes.

0:47:090:47:10

Your beautiful new fire. Do you know where you are in the house? No.

0:47:250:47:28

Not yet, no. Have a look at your beautiful new kitchen.

0:47:280:47:31

We've spoken to your occupational therapist in the design of this as well.

0:47:370:47:40

If you choose to use your wheelchair to move about,

0:47:400:47:43

you'll find the floors throughout the ground floor are all level

0:47:430:47:46

and the doors are all wide enough for you to move around, if that's the way you would choose to go.

0:47:460:47:51

If you want to stand up, like you are, you've got the work surface there.

0:47:510:47:54

If you want to sit down and work, you've got a lower work surface to work there.

0:47:540:47:58

The ovens are placed at the right height that you can use them standing up.

0:47:580:48:02

Or if you are in the wheelchair, you can still use them sitting down.

0:48:020:48:05

I'm going to have to go another way, I think. What do you make of it all?

0:48:070:48:10

It's amazing. I'm speechless.

0:48:100:48:13

This is...

0:48:150:48:16

This is as much as I could ask for.

0:48:160:48:19

What else did you need? I'm sorry. We haven't dealt with the thing you wanted. A downstairs loo.

0:48:190:48:23

A downstairs toilet, yes. If you want to head off in that direction.

0:48:230:48:26

Wow!

0:48:330:48:35

Not quite what you were expecting? I didn't know what to expect.

0:48:390:48:45

It's nice. Very nice. I can't quite believe it's mine.

0:48:470:48:51

So you need to turn around and open the door behind you.

0:48:540:48:57

Rainforest... Rainforest shower.

0:49:040:49:07

The people involved in this have gone the extra mile

0:49:070:49:10

on everything they've done. I mean, the tiling is beautiful.

0:49:100:49:14

All the workmanship that's gone in. So much work.

0:49:140:49:17

This is like staying in a posh hotel. Yes. And it's yours.

0:49:180:49:21

I don't feel like it's right.

0:49:210:49:23

I'm thinking, OK, when do we check out?

0:49:240:49:28

Oh, wow! We've tidied up the hallway a little bit.

0:49:320:49:35

We kept your front door because we knew how much you loved that.

0:49:350:49:38

So, your living room area. Let's have a look, shall we?

0:49:380:49:40

All right?

0:49:480:49:49

It's OK.

0:49:520:49:54

It's a lot, isn't it? A lot to take in.

0:50:090:50:12

What is it that's got to you? Something you're thinking has got to.

0:50:150:50:18

It's not bricks and mortar that has suddenly made you emotional. It's something you are thinking.

0:50:180:50:24

For people to come in here.

0:50:240:50:26

Their effort. Their time.

0:50:260:50:29

This is our first home.

0:50:300:50:33

Just coming in and seeing pictures, proper pictures on the wall.

0:50:330:50:37

What have these builders done for you? It's like a new life.

0:50:370:50:40

Like being reborn.

0:50:420:50:43

In return for this, will you make me one promise?

0:50:430:50:46

You'll never use the expression again, "I've had my life".

0:50:460:50:50

I promise you. I make that promise.

0:50:500:50:53

Your wonderful young adults,

0:50:530:50:55

when I was asking them about it, and I said, "What do you think?"

0:50:550:50:59

And they said, "We hope this is going to be a brand-new beginning.

0:50:590:51:02

"And Dad will be smiling more

0:51:020:51:04

"and we'll be able to do family things and we will be able to

0:51:040:51:07

"mix in together and just have a great Christmas,"

0:51:070:51:10

and those kinds of things.

0:51:100:51:12

They are over the moon for you. Properly over the moon for you.

0:51:120:51:15

They see this as a brand-new beginning. This is draw the line.

0:51:150:51:18

New beginning? New beginning.

0:51:180:51:21

We were very aware that we need it to work for you too, so when you are ready, open your eyes.

0:51:230:51:27

You want a little look at the kitchen because I know

0:51:350:51:38

the kitchen is an important part of family life, isn't it?

0:51:380:51:41

I love it. It's crazy. It looks pretty, doesn't it? Yes. Oh, my God!

0:51:410:51:46

It's really nice. Mum and Dad are going to love this.

0:51:480:51:51

Dad's going to love that shower. Definitely.

0:51:510:51:54

So how have we done so far? Brilliantly. Very good.

0:51:550:52:01

The only thing we need to do now is go and look at the non-adult area because of course the upstairs

0:52:010:52:06

now becomes yours. Ready to go and have a look?

0:52:060:52:09

Yes. Come on then.

0:52:090:52:10

Wow! It's amazing.

0:52:150:52:19

We wanted to get as much cupboard space and space for you to

0:52:200:52:23

put your computers, your music and all your other things in.

0:52:230:52:25

Very difficult in a short room to make all the space. Are you happy with it?

0:52:250:52:29

It's really good. I didn't expect this at all.

0:52:290:52:31

He's a bit gobsmacked, I think. Yes. He's very quiet, isn't he?

0:52:310:52:36

Oh, my God!

0:52:390:52:41

It's amazing. Wow! I love it.

0:52:420:52:46

It's nice.

0:52:500:52:52

Don't cry. Oh, my God.

0:52:540:52:57

Obviously, the sewing kit because we know you like sewing.

0:52:570:53:01

A table to do your work on or write love letters or whatever it is girls do. I don't know.

0:53:010:53:06

A pretty bed. Do you like it? Yes.

0:53:060:53:09

Do you want to see yours now? Yes.

0:53:110:53:14

Come on.

0:53:140:53:16

Oh, my God!

0:53:190:53:22

Pretty cool, huh? Yes.

0:53:240:53:26

I never imagined it like this.

0:53:280:53:31

Does this make it feel like a proper family home now? Yes, definitely.

0:53:310:53:34

We couldn't imagine it, could we? No.

0:53:360:53:39

Why do you think it's hit you so hard emotionally?

0:53:390:53:42

Because it has just made it easier for everybody, especially Mum and Dad.

0:53:420:53:46

We can finally start again and everything will be better.

0:53:460:53:50

That's pretty cool, isn't it? Yes.

0:53:520:53:54

You just need a bathroom now, don't you?

0:53:540:53:57

You've got have a bathroom between you, haven't you? BOTH: Yes.

0:53:570:54:00

Is there any chance Jordan will ever get any time in the bathroom?

0:54:000:54:04

Probably not. Not with us two.

0:54:040:54:06

Right, let's have a look at this bathroom. Come on.

0:54:080:54:10

I love it! It's all ours! Pretty cool, isn't it? ALL: Yes.

0:54:150:54:19

I'm glad you like it. I'm really glad you like it.

0:54:190:54:22

Hi, daughter. All right?

0:54:280:54:30

It's all right. Do you love it? Yes.

0:54:300:54:32

I've got one other thing to show you. Come and have a look.

0:54:320:54:36

Oh, my God! We've done slightly better than your old barbecue.

0:54:420:54:45

What we've got is a full built-in barbecue kitchen for you.

0:54:450:54:49

A nice little area for you to sit and have a glass of wine out here if you want to, of an evening. Kids.

0:54:490:54:54

And if the parents want to come out and join too!

0:54:540:54:56

Obviously, a nice table and chairs.

0:54:590:55:02

Raised beds all the way along again so if you wanted to work on them

0:55:020:55:05

and plant your own veggies once the weather comes around,

0:55:050:55:08

you can either do that sitting down or standing up because we put

0:55:080:55:11

the beds to exactly the right height for either.

0:55:110:55:13

You'll notice you're getting along fine on the crutches

0:55:130:55:16

going up and down the garden, but it works with the wheelchair as well.

0:55:160:55:19

You can get all the way to the bottom of the garden and if

0:55:190:55:21

we carry on to the end, you'll find the greenhouse has double doors.

0:55:210:55:24

Oh, my God!

0:55:240:55:26

What's it like seeing your dad walking around? Amazing.

0:55:260:55:30

He's able to get up here without struggling which is good.

0:55:300:55:33

It's going to be good for all of us.

0:55:330:55:36

Good enough?

0:55:360:55:38

LAUGHTER

0:55:380:55:40

Say no more.

0:55:400:55:42

APPLAUSE

0:55:460:55:49

Obviously, I've spoken to some of you guys when it first started.

0:56:070:56:12

All I want to say is, from the bottom of our hearts...

0:56:120:56:16

..it's very humbling...

0:56:170:56:21

APPLAUSE

0:56:260:56:29

It's very humbling knowing that all you guys

0:56:340:56:38

have spent time, your own free time on this project.

0:56:380:56:44

It means so much and I could go on

0:56:440:56:48

but I just want to thank every single one of you for the time

0:56:480:56:53

and effort in making this a new beginning for us,

0:56:530:56:58

especially for me,

0:56:580:57:00

but thank you all... for a downstairs toilet.

0:57:000:57:04

APPLAUSE

0:57:040:57:05

Tell these guys what it means from your point of view for your mum and dad.

0:57:120:57:16

After so long of going through so much trouble trying to get

0:57:160:57:19

what we needed for him, it's just helped so much,

0:57:190:57:23

and all of this has helped, their smiles on their faces.

0:57:230:57:27

It's just helped a lot.

0:57:270:57:30

APPLAUSE

0:57:300:57:32

Cheers. Congratulations. Thanks.

0:57:390:57:40

I hope you got what you wanted.

0:57:400:57:43

Cheers. It's been a pleasure.

0:57:430:57:46

Cracking people round here.

0:57:460:57:48

It doesn't really matter whether you agree with what we send

0:57:560:57:59

our young people in the forces around the world to do.

0:57:590:58:02

They do their duty to the best of their ability,

0:58:020:58:05

and if during the course of those duties, they suffer injuries,

0:58:050:58:08

it's our responsibility as a society to look after them, isn't it?

0:58:080:58:12

Somehow Mo and his family slipped through the net of support

0:58:120:58:16

that should have been there for them.

0:58:160:58:18

As a result, they needed someone else to help

0:58:180:58:20

and it was their community that came together to do it for them

0:58:200:58:23

and make a difference. And boy, what a difference!

0:58:230:58:25

The man we met at the beginning of the week

0:58:250:58:28

is a completely different man now, looking forward to a bright future

0:58:280:58:31

with him and his family.

0:58:310:58:33
