Most of us take our freedom for granted, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
but for Antonia, it's a distant dream. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:08
I've been in hospitals for | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
pretty much the whole of the last three years. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
We were only going in for one day, and we didn't ever come out. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
Her condition is pulling a loving family apart. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
It does fill you with a lot of guilt. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
You can see how much pain she's in, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
and you can see how frustrated she is and how limited she is. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:34
That's really, really tough. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
Kept prisoner by a debilitating illness, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Antonia's watching the best years of her life pass her by. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:44
I want to be able to be a normal teenager, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
and do normal teenager things, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
and just be able to be independent and just go home. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:56
But there's nowhere to go, so... | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
I can't go. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
'And that's where we step in. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
'This brave girl and her family need their lives back. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
'We'll try to give it to them, whatever this build throws at us.' | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
-I think we have to send them home early. -Right, OK, I'll do that. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
It's just not safe, is it? | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
'And we're ready to give it our best shot.' | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
-You can't just take seven things that people like and nail them together... -Yes, I can! | 0:01:18 | 0:01:23
Oh, my gosh! Look at our kitchen! | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
Wow. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28 | |
We have just nine days to carry out the build. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
The usual suspects are here, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
and our designer this week is Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
-Hello. -You come from round this area. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
We're bordering on my land. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
Where are we going to find an army of helpers, Laurence? | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Well, luckily I brought this lot with me. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
This is DIY SOS! | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
THEY CHEER | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
Antonia and her brother Samuel were bought up by their mum, Victoria, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
a teacher, in a small village in Worcestershire. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
She was happy and healthy until, at four years old, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
she was struck by a mysterious illness. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
She just had what seemed to be seizures. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
It was just an awful time, because we didn't know what was happening. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
To watch and not know, when you actually, you, as a parent, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
just want to make everything right, yeah, it does feel quite helpless. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
As she got older, Antonia did appear to improve, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
and it seemed that family life could get back to normal. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Antonia had dance clubs and Mum was doing something as well, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
and we all had all of our own kind of little lives as well, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
which we were all kind of orchestrating together. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
She had an amazing group of friends, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
used to camp out in the garden and laugh a lot, and it was the best, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
I think she would say it was the best time of her life, really. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
But then, four years ago, at the age of 14, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
Antonia took a dramatic turn for the worse. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
Suddenly, she started collapsing. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Just falling unconscious. And this sprang from nowhere, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
she was collapsing and nobody knew what it was. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
I'd go to A&E and stay in for a few days, and then come back out, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
but every week I was in for an admission. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
After a barrage of tests, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
doctors diagnosed Antonia with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
a rare and painful condition | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
which weakens the body's connective tissues. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
When things like this happen, you never think that it would be me, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
or anyone to do with my family, but it is, so... | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
It's difficult. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:39
The pain is awful for her, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
and she's on medication that even can't stop the pain. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
And you never really hear her talk about pain. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
You know, she doesn't, she just carries on. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
This incurable illness weakens nearly every system in her body. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
She can no longer digest food, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
and has to be fed through a tube directly into her heart. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
She can't stand or even sit upright without collapsing. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
My heart and my veins and my autonomic nervous system | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
isn't strong enough to pump the blood to my brain, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
so effectively, when your brain hasn't got any blood in it, | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
it just shuts down. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Antonia stayed in several hospitals | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
before arriving at a specialist unit in London. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
Victoria had to travel hundreds of miles to be with her, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
and was forced to stop work as a result. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Nearly three years after her first admission, | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
Antonia is now back at her local hospital in Gloucester, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
where her mum spends every day and night by her side. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
I sleep on the floor next to Antonia's bed, so I have... | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
I've got a crash mat that I put out here, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
and then pop up and just check everything's all right. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
It's really made Mum very scared to leave her, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
because these episodes can be quite serious and quite scary, yeah. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
If she wasn't found when she's collapsing | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
and she's not got an airway in, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
it's really hard to think about what could happen. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Even Samuel gave up a dream job to be near his sister. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
Bedbound, she's been confined to a hospital room | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
for the most part of three years. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
She's completely trapped, | 0:05:20 | 0:05:21
whether it's trapped in the four walls of a hospital room or trapped | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
within the limitations of her body, and, you know, that is hard. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:30
I look outside the window and I kind of think, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
"Oh, God, that is very big out there." | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
And, like, just remembering crossing the road and stuff, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
it seems kind of scary, really. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:40
As horrific and potentially life-threatening as Antonia's condition is, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
she could be cared for at home, | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
but only if her home is equipped with oxygen, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
a sterile space for her intravenous medications, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
and room for a full-length wheelchair, and, at the moment, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
all that's impossible. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
Her legs have to be up all the time, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
so it's equivalent of trying to move a bed through the front door, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
which we can't do. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
And then there's no turning space, there's nowhere for her to sleep. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
After years of struggling to make the best of these unimaginable | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
circumstances, the family are at the end of their tethers. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
It's just torn the family apart, and we've been so separated. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
I've always... | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
been quite positive and things, and got on with it, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
but now I'm getting tired. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
It's a desperate plight for a young girl who's lost her prime teenage | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
years to this cruel disorder. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
We need to give her and her family some freedom back, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
and get Antonia home. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
-How do we help? -This house used to be a really happy house, | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
and the children used to laugh loads and we used to all be really silly. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
I haven't heard a laugh for quite a long time, really. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
Psychologically, it's really important for Antonia to be home. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
Has it been tough for her just recently? | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
The truth is, it's been absolutely horrendous as it's unfolded. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
Antonia's had, I think, 22 operations. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
I say, "I think," it sounds bad in itself, doesn't it? | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
-Since last January... -Well, I should imagine after a while you do start to lose track. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
You know, you bundle through life with two active children doing | 0:07:16 | 0:07:22
normal stuff, and then all of a sudden it's not there any more. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
No. I used to get scared and think, if I ever start crying, that'll be it, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
I won't be able to pull myself back together | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
to do what I need to do the next moment. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
And this isn't about me, this isn't about me. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
This is about a young lady who is absolutely amazing | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
and deserves to be able to come home. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
'You know, despite her brave face, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
'it's clear that Victoria and the whole family desperately need help, | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
'and this lot are queueing up to lend a hand.' | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Hello. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:52
APPLAUSE | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
Thank you so, so much for giving up your time. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
I'm a bit sort of shellshocked that you're all doing this for us. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
To get her home, it will be lovely to see her really smile properly again. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
In order to do that, we need to get you off and away from the place | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
-so that we can get started, if that's all right. -Thank you so much. -No problem. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
-We'll see you. -Thank you. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:13
'With Mum safely out of sight, we can get going. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
'And our first job is to get rid of anything in our way - from tiles | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
'to tree trunks.' | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
-The wrong house. -The wrong one! | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
'We've got over 100 tradesmen here on the first day alone, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
'of all shapes and sizes!' | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
It just demonstrates the fact that it's far too low. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
If he can reach it! THEY LAUGH | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
'And of every follicular configuration.' | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
I like your beard. That's a beauty. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
'That's a bit worrying, isn't it? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
'Walls are crashing down inside, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:49
'but they'll be going up outside, as round the back, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
'we're building a ground-floor extension to house Antonia's brand-new | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
'bedroom and wet room. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
'Earlier this week, this lovely bunch of lads laid the groundworks for us | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
'to give us a head start. But today, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
'things have ground to a very premature halt. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
'The voice of doom has started early this week.' | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
How much are you saying we're behind, then? | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
-Half a day. -So we've been working 45 minutes and we're half a day behind? | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
-Yeah. -How does that work? -We hadn't got the beams to lay the block and | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
-beam floor. -Where's the block and beam floor? | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
It's about three hours away up the M5. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
On a broken down wagon. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
-On a broken down wagon. -You're joking me? | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
'The men with the timber frame for Antonia's extension are already | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
'here and raring to go. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
'But to be honest, they can't do diddly squat until that block and | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
'beam floor is down. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:37
'What we can do is rip out the garden, but Julian's at a bit of a loss when | 0:09:40 | 0:09:45
'it comes to the green stuff.' | 0:09:45 | 0:09:46
-I'm not a plant man, am I? -Heavy plant. -Yeah, heavy plant. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
-As in machinery, but not... -Green plants. -No. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
-Is there much growing in your garden? -I ripped it all out last week. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
-Did you? -I bought myself a little digger. -What, like a little hand digger? | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
No, a 1.6 tonne mini digger. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
-And I've been in my front garden. -NICK LAUGHS | 0:10:03 | 0:10:04
I've took 70 tonnes of soil out of the garden. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:09
-What are you doing, a swimming pool? -No. Landscaping it. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
-Are you? -Yeah. -And what are you going to plant in there? | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
-Nothing. -Nothing... -Chippings. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
NICK LAUGHS | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
'What this build needs is someone who doesn't think chippings are the | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
'height of luxury design. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
'Someone stylish, sophisticated and not at all irritating. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
'Vintage 1931, if I'm not mistaken. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
'And the car's getting on a bit, too!' | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
HE LAUGHS | 0:10:37 | 0:10:38
I see you've started. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:40
Well, we thought we might as well press on and get as much done before | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
-you started taking an influence. -Exactly. -By the way, happy birthday. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
-Thank you very much indeed. -It was THE birthday, wasn't it? | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
It was. It was a great celebration. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
Gloucestershire's finest all coming together to mark how lucky we are to | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
-have survived 50. -So are you actually announcing that? | 0:10:55 | 0:10:58
Absolutely. Cut me in half and count my rings. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:00
I am done dendro-chronologically 50. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
'Who knew? Well, I did, because I was there. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
'Well, let's put that half century of knowledge to good use.' | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
I mean, the idea is to try and give Antonia and the rest of the family an ability | 0:11:10 | 0:11:15
to have as much space together as possible. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
-Yes. -Because of her condition, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:19
it means that she takes up an enormous amount of room when she moves. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:24
So it's really important that we don't have a warren of small areas, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:30
because she's going to be sort of stuck in one and everybody else is going to be stuck in the other. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
'Taking out most of the internal walls, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
'Laurence's design will create a spacious open plan kitchen and | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
'dining area. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
'The existing living room will become an accessible space where the | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
'family can spend quality time. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
'Upstairs, mum Victoria will have a plush new bedroom, | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
'along with dressing room, instead of that hospital floor. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
'Her old one will become a guest room for Samuel when he comes to stay with | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
'his family. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
'And most important of all, | 0:11:59 | 0:12:00
'the new extension will house Antonia's wet room and bedroom, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
'complete with oxygen supply, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
'space to manoeuvre and a sterile area to prepare her meds at home. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:10
'DIY SOS builder's rock, not available anywhere. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
'Chris will be a happy man as the plasterboard has turned up ahead of | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
'schedule, although there seems to be a slight imperfection in the back.' | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
THEY CHEER | 0:12:26 | 0:12:27
'Definitely not ahead of schedule is the block and beam floor. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
'It's finally arrived several hours late after a leisurely day basking | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
'like a shark on the hard shoulder of the M5.' | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
How long have we got? | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
-Before this is in. -An hour, it should be in. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
Get this in in an hour. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
-Top man, top man. -'That's where he buys his shirts! | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
'Once the floor's in, we need to get that timber frame for Antonia's room | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
'up and fast. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
'A hard enough job even if it wasn't the hottest day of the year.' | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
But then, this is good plastering weather. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
No, it's not. Too hot. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
It's good for the plaster, but not for the plasterers. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
-Ah! -See what I mean? -Yes. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Head over. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
-Hottest day of the year, it is. -Thanks very much. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
-Get a bit of that on you. -Cheers. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
'The sparks have been flying today. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
'They're about the only team on schedule.' | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
Done the ring main upstairs, they're doing the lighting upstairs, | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
the kitchen will all be sorted as well, so we are... | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
we are up with it, as they say. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
'Doesn't make any sense, really, does he? But you've got to love him.' | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
-Laurence had a birthday recently. How old do you think he is? -I reckon | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
he's...58, 59. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
-And what was he? -50. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
Oh, sugar! | 0:13:43 | 0:13:44
Laurence! Laurence! | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
Don't put me in it. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
'Yeah, I don't think Billy will be getting a party bag, do you?' | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
-Jules! Come here. -'But Chris and Jules might.' | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
I didn't know whether you knew, but it's Laurence's birthday. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
-Laurence who? -Our designer. -Right. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
-Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. -Yeah. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
And I thought we'd buy a little cake, but we'd Laurence it. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
-All right. -We'd spruce it up a bit. -Decorate it and give it a bit of a Laurence flair. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
Yeah, so, um... Right. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:11
Would you say he looked 50? | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
-Oh, I guessed at 60, to be honest. -Really? -Yeah. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
-Look. -Liking it. It needs a moustache. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:23
-Right. -He had a bit on his chin, didn't he? | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
HE LAUGHS | 0:14:25 | 0:14:26
Aw, mate! | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
You can overdress a cake. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:30
You can. I think definitely less is more. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
'Bake Off, here they come! | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
'I'll tell you who deserves an extra large slice of cake - these boys, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:39
'because they've put the block floor down in under an hour. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
'But while ripping out the back garden, we've hit an unexpected problem.' | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
We have a ground bees' nest here that was under the shed. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:52
We're going to have to get someone in to move the bees, take them away, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
and find them a new home. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
I'll go and call a bee person. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
'Usually, I'd call the A person, but the budget's a bit tight!' | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
NICK CHUCKLES | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
'That frame for Antonia's room has finally started going up, but with | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
'so much to fit inside, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
'we'll still be in trouble if we can't get finished today. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
'Inside, the ceiling is now being held up only by metal props and a robust | 0:15:15 | 0:15:20
'aroma of hot builder, in preparation for the steels arriving tomorrow.' | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
We've got to take the ends of all those rafters off, to get the steelwork in. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
-Not a five-minute job, then. -Not five minutes. -No. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
'Even in the stifling heat, these 100-odd builders are giving it their all. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
'All except for Mary Berry and Paul out here.' | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
-Happy birthday, Mr Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. -I am... | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
-You're loving it, aren't you? -I am absolutely delighted with that. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
-Blow your candle out, then. -Come on. -Come on. Make a wish. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
Are you still here? | 0:15:54 | 0:15:55
THEY LAUGH | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
I'm going to put it somewhere really safe where I can really enjoy it. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
Ah! No, clap yourselves, by all means. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
HE LAUGHS | 0:16:05 | 0:16:06
-I think he was very, very pleased by that. -I think he was almost touched. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
-Yeah. -Almost. -Almost shed a tear. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11
He did. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:13
-Wow! -He loved that. -'You notice Chris still can't say his name properly. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
'Here comes the biohazard team to clean the Portaloos. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
'Just kidding! They're bee handlers. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
'You know, this lot have worked, well, like worker bees today. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:28
'And now that the queen bee's got his cake... NICK LAUGHS | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
'..and our stripy little friends | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
'are out on their ears, all that's left to do is finish the timber frame.' | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
Pretty much done. This is about another two hours' work, which | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
has to be done because we won't get on tomorrow if we don't. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
We're going to come through the door that's going to disappear. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
We're going to block this in. Part of the chimney that has disappeared, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
to the new front door that has appeared. Well, | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
the space at least. And there's going to be a porch out there, too. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
We're going to block up the old French door. Come through here. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
As you can see, all the ceiling is taken out. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
This is a forest of acrow props, and the reason it's a forest of acrow props is | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
because it's holding up the whole of upstairs, | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
because there are new steels that need to go in this side, too. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
Considering the raging temperatures today, and the difficulties we've had, | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
I think that's a pretty good start. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
'So we've clawed back the start of the build from an unprecedented five-hour delay. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
'And tomorrow is a new day. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
'I know it's stating the obvious, but it is. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:18
'The hottest day of the year. Again!' | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
Morning - it's proper shorts weather today. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
They say it's going to be upwards of 40 degrees, | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
so we've got to look after our builders and make sure they keep hydrated. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
Nice thing about having a big pair of shorts on, there's plenty of ball room. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
Which means you can bring one in to throw around with the builders at lunchtime. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
'A hot day can play merry hell with materials and the workforce alike.' | 0:17:37 | 0:17:41
-This is brilliant weather, isn't it? -Oh, it's... Well, it's good, | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
but obviously we might have a little problem with the glues because | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
obviously, certain temperatures, too high, too low, | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
we need something in between a little bit, really. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Hang on. Every time we're doing well in the winter, they go, "It's a bit difficult in the winter, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
-"it's too cold!" -Yeah. -Now you're saying it's to hot. -Well, you know, it's glue, isn't it? | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
We'll be all right. We'll be all right. I'm big enough to cover the sun out, block the sun out. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:03
THEY LAUGH | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
'Fortunately, the heat hasn't put these fellas off. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
'They're back for more and in even greater numbers. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
'Julian's got his hands on one of his favourite toys. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
'Look at the concentration. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
'I bet he wouldn't drive his own digger down there. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
'He might scratch the paintwork, you see. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
'Let's hope he can get into the back garden, it needs some serious reshaping.' | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
I suppose this garden's all about access. Because they haven't been out here for... | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
Well, for ages. They haven't had a chance. But of course it's potentially | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
a sensory space and a great space to be, | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
-isn't it? -Yeah, no, the garden should be a very, | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
very important part of bringing Antonia back, as far as I'm concerned. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
The one thing that is complicated is that rose. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
That rose tree, we think, was planted | 0:18:48 | 0:18:53
by Victoria's mother just before she died. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
So, certainly, it has great sentimental value, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
which is why we're protecting it. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
'Very important detail, that. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:00
'The plan is to build a garden on two levels - | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
'decking outside Antonio's room, built around that precious rose, | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
'followed by a patio with the large turning circles you need. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
'All connected by a sandstone ramp to allow her to move around. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
'To bring Laurence's design to life, | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
'we've got a team of gardeners with a bloke called Ian at the helm.' | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Officially, hottest day of the year... | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
-Sounds good. -..to build a garden. -Mm-hm. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
-How you doing? -Struggling. -THEY LAUGH | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
You've got material problems. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:29
We have, yeah, we are seriously short of kit at the moment and we could do | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
with getting a few more things here. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
'The building game's really picked up recently and we are finding that | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
'merchants simply haven't got the stock to donate.' | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
We're suffering, but actually, it's a good thing. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
It's an illustration of the fact that the economy and the building | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
industry are coming out of recession with a bang, | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
which is excellent for us all. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
Doesn't help much on this one though, does it? | 0:19:53 | 0:19:54
We are young and flexible. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
We are acting kind of tough. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
We can cope, sir. | 0:19:58 | 0:19:59
# We are young, we are free, keep our teeth nice and clean. # | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
MUSIC: Alright by Supergrass | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
'All we can do is keep ringing around | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
'and hope that someone comes up with the goods. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
'You see, the builders really want to get this build right for Antonia | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
'and her family. Her brother, Samuel, | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
'has already had to shoulder enough responsibility to last a lifetime.' | 0:20:19 | 0:20:23
What's the toughest thing for you that you've seen with Antonia? | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
The toughest thing is to have seen her completely lose the ability to | 0:20:29 | 0:20:34
just do whatever she likes. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
Just be able to stand up and walk out of the room, you know? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
When someone's so independent and then that happens to them, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
that's a massive change. It's really, really apparent. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:44
So, that's really, really tough to see. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
At the moment, she doesn't think that she'd be able to come out of | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
hospital. You know, | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
she doesn't think that it's a possibility, because she used to talk about | 0:20:52 | 0:20:57
coming home and doing all these things for so long, and in the last | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
six months, I haven't heard her say anything like that. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
It must be heartbreaking for you because you obviously love her so | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
-much, when you see her in pain. Cos she suffers a lot, doesn't she? -Yeah. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
The thing is, she's in pain all the time. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
You never hear her complain unless it's absolutely, you know, awful. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:18
She puts on a front quite a lot of the time for other people, | 0:21:18 | 0:21:23
which is... | 0:21:23 | 0:21:24
selfless, really, because... | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
..it's meant that quite often, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:29
people don't necessarily see how bad it really is. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
I think... | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
my sister is | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
amazing and she's, | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
you know, she's the most inspirational person. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
But for me, it's my mum who's my hero. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
Because I've seen how much my mum has had to fight to move forward | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
with the situation and to sort situations out completely by herself. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:56
Fearlessly, really. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:57
I know there are days when she completely loses hope and thinks, | 0:21:59 | 0:22:01
"How can I carry on like this?" | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
But she just keeps going, and I think that's absolutely amazing. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
I hope that when you walk in there, | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
what you see is somewhere that's not only good for Antonia, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
not only takes the pressure off your mum a little bit, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
but also takes the pressure off you, because you've done an extraordinary job in looking after your family. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:21
'This build could make life so much more bearable, both for Antonia | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
'and her family, too. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
'Fortunately in the afternoon, some materials have started trickling in. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
'That will keep Julian happy. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
'The steels for the ceiling have arrived. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
'And the bricks for Antonia's extension are being dropped off around the back.' | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
That's a clever little crane, isn't it? | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
It's on a railway track on the back of the... | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
I've not seen that before. It's very cool. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
It's 3,200 bricks we've got to get into the back of the building. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
'Good job it's not an insanely hot day, or this would be really hard work. | 0:22:56 | 0:23:01
'I've got lose some weight. People are starting to flag and it's even | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
'hotter on the roof.' | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
Fancy an ice cream? | 0:23:11 | 0:23:12
I'll go and organise it. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:15
'Inside, the steels are going in despite the blistering temperatures. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
'There you go. Up, up, up!' | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
All right. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:24
On three, we're going to lift and pull it this way 50 mil. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
Ready? One, two, three. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
Lift, this way. Stop. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
'What's got 19 heads, 38 feet and smells like one giant armpit? | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
'Put it this way, it's not a caterpillar. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
'Round Antonia's room, the skin's going up, and in this weather, | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
'there's a lot of skin on show.' | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
So, just touching 100 degrees there. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
I told you it was going to be hot today, and it's got ridiculously hot. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
Are you managing all right over there with the heat and everything? | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
Yeah, just about. I said we'll be here until about half past four and | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
that will just about do us, then. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
'Yeah, it's no fault of our poor brickies, who've worn themselves out | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
'trying to keep on schedule, but it's another blow for Antonia's extension. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
'The rest of the team aren't doing much better either. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
'We've already got through a week's worth of water in a couple of days.' | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
Because it's this hot, we've actually got a slight problem. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
-Everyone's worn out. -Yeah. -There's guys up on that roof up there who are working... | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
You said it was 100 down here. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:27
-It's more up there. -We've got 30 guys inside and the body heat of that lot | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
added to the temperature in there... | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
'Looks like the heat's got to Billy, too. Where's he gone?' | 0:24:36 | 0:24:39
Oi, lads, anybody seen Billy? | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
Don't know where he is. Haven't seen him for a while. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:46
Billy! Has anyone seen Billy? | 0:24:46 | 0:24:48
ICE CREAM VAN PLAYS TUNE | 0:24:48 | 0:24:50
'Ah, just the job. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
'Oh, no. Really?' | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
You might have wondered where I've been. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
I've been and hijacked an ice cream van. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
We're going to do knickerbocker glories. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
This one is the one that my mother used to make. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
-IN ITALIAN ACCENT: -Ah, Billio. -What do you want? | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
Could I possibly have a 99-io? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:11
No, it's a knickerbocker glory or nothing. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
'Yeah, somebody gave them a script, didn't they? | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
'Despite the best efforts of Billy Berlusconi, | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
'our workforce is utterly exhausted. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
'We're going to have to take an unprecedented step because of this heat.' | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
I think we have to send them home early. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
-Right, OK. I'll do that. -It's just not safe, is it? | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
No, it's not safe. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
'Shutting the site early will cost us three hours of build time, | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
'three hours we can't afford. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
'We certainly can't afford another day like this. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
'We're in luck! The typical British summer has returned!' | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
The weather's changed a bit today. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
We've got a bit of rain after all the heat yesterday, | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
which is actually quite refreshing, but we don't want too much. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
Morning, morning. Morning. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
'It's day three and the plasterers have arrived en masse.' | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
Firstly, thank you for giving us your time. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
'And Chris is giving them his usual upbeat motivation speech.' | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
We're about half a day behind. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:09
But not putting any pressure on you. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
'Yeah, that's one to rally the troops, Chris. Well done(!) | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
'And their first challenge is to get through the newly bricked-up | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
'front door.' | 0:26:16 | 0:26:17
It might pay to go through that window. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
'With the more reasonable temperature, | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
'there's a symphony of construction going on. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
'Music to my ears.' | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
# Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken! | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
# Take a little chance with me... # | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
'Yeah, that was fun, wasn't it? We may have shut early yesterday, | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
'but the way these lads are going at it, we might get this build back on track. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:53
'Just look at the plasterers go.' | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
-Who's putting this on? -Ivan. -Ivan. -Pleased to meet you. -Nice to meet you. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
-You don't meet many Ivans around. -No, there's only a few of us. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
Named after Ivan the Terrible? | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
My nan's next-door neighbour. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
-Is there a story there? -No. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
NICK LAUGHS | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
'I think there's a story there. Inside, we're motoring, | 0:27:12 | 0:27:15
'but outside we still don't have all of the garden materials, and a brief | 0:27:15 | 0:27:19
'shower's stopped play for Jules. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:22
'Still, who are we to complain? | 0:27:25 | 0:27:26
'Antonia hasn't been able to experience a day outdoors in a very long time. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:31
'Luckily, she has an incredibly supportive family | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
'and a best mate like Georgia.' | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
So how long have you known Antonia? | 0:27:35 | 0:27:36
-Four years. -Right. -Yeah. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
And so what kind of person was she before all her difficulties came along? | 0:27:38 | 0:27:42
Very energetic and mad. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
So it must have come as doubly a shock for somebody who was so energetic | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
-to suddenly be so struck down. -Yeah. When she was in London, I used to go up on the weekend | 0:27:48 | 0:27:53
and visit her and stay in the hospital room with her. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
And I would just get really agitated after a few hours, | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
just being trapped in that room. But I can get up and leave. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
She can't. So just thinking how she would feel being stuck there. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:06
-It's horrible. -But she passes out often, doesn't she? | 0:28:06 | 0:28:10
Yeah, yeah. I used to... | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
Whenever she passed out, I always used to read to her. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
Because sometimes, she can still hear. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
-Is that right? -Yeah. -That's a hell of a friendship you've got there, then. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:22
Yeah. Well, I love her, so... | 0:28:22 | 0:28:24
But that's a long time to, you know, to be going and seeing somebody | 0:28:25 | 0:28:28
and travelling up to London to see her and all those things. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
She's my best friend. It's what you do, don't you, if you love someone? | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
It's very cool, though. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:36
She's obviously a very lovely person. | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
She is, she is. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:40
'We can't help with Antonia's diagnosis, but we can get her back home. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:46
'And with the sun out again, the team are redoubling their efforts. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:49
'And finally our calls have paid off and materials are arriving thick and fast. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
'The patio's here. | 0:28:58 | 0:28:59
'And the screed for a brand-new floor in Antonia's room.' | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
-50 mil, sort of liquid screed. -Yeah. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:08
Which goes off in about 24, 36 hours | 0:29:08 | 0:29:10
and you can get that done and working, hopefully. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
We put one down before and it didn't go off. | 0:29:13 | 0:29:15
-But this will go off? -Yeah, promise. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
'Antonia's extension has created nothing but headaches so far, | 0:29:20 | 0:29:23
'but the roof's nearly finished, and a good job, too, | 0:29:23 | 0:29:27
'as it's been holding up the gardeners.' | 0:29:27 | 0:29:29
I will be so glad to see the back of that scaffolding. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:32
-Trust me, yeah. -This would be a three-week job, | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
two and a half, three-week job for you guys normally? | 0:29:34 | 0:29:36
I would say so, yeah. Three weeks would probably do it. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
'Well, we're four days in, so you've got five days, Ian. NICK LAUGHS | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
'You're welcome! | 0:29:43 | 0:29:44
'Despite everyone getting under each other's feet, there's no lack of goodwill on site. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:49
'People have roped in their mates, their bosses, their daughters, | 0:29:49 | 0:29:53
'and even those who can't help are here in spirit.' | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
I lost my brother last year | 0:29:56 | 0:29:59
and he would have loved this. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:00
I just want him to feel part of it, really. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
A bit soft, I know, but the sort of thing he would have been involved in, | 0:30:03 | 0:30:06
I should imagine, so just wanted to feel that he was here with me today. | 0:30:06 | 0:30:10
'Doesn't sound daft at all to me. There's a lot of love on site. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:13
'This lot are determined to make this house a home again for Antonia | 0:30:13 | 0:30:17
'and her family. For her mum, Victoria, her illness has been heartbreaking.' | 0:30:17 | 0:30:21
The hardest part was... | 0:30:23 | 0:30:27
not knowing how to help. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:29
Not knowing if Antonia is in pain. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:32
There's nothing I can do particularly. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:35
I can only be there. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:36
And it's harrowing to watch your child in really, really, really bad pain | 0:30:37 | 0:30:43
and not be able to make it better. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:45
And for us to be in hospital away from home for that long, away from | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
family, away from friends, and it to be every day. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:53
Why aren't you worn out? | 0:30:56 | 0:30:57
-Or are you? -I am, actually. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:02
I just think you just have to keep going. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
-There isn't... -It's easier said than done. -I know, but there's not a choice. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
I've learned an awful lot from Antonia and Samuel. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:12
They're a lot stronger than I am. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
-You're very proud of Samuel, aren't you? -Very, very proud of Samuel. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
He has supported his sister and he loves his sister. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:22
With Antonia's illness, it was all very sudden for everybody. | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
It was sudden for him. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:26
Suddenly, we didn't come home. That was it. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
We were gone for a blood test and we didn't come home. And I think... | 0:31:30 | 0:31:34
Yes, I suppose Samuel had to grow up pretty quick. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
Have you pictured having her home now that you know that it's happening? | 0:31:39 | 0:31:42
Oh, it's going to be amazing. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:44
Antonia thought I had a magic wand and I could just make everything right. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:48
And I haven't been able to make this right, I haven't been able to get her home. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
When she said, | 0:31:52 | 0:31:53
"I want to go home," I've had to say, "I can't take you." | 0:31:53 | 0:31:57
And that is horrible. | 0:31:57 | 0:31:59
We've hopped from crisis to crisis to crisis, and for something good | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
to happen that so many people are trying their hardest to get Antonia home, | 0:32:03 | 0:32:08
it is unbelievable. | 0:32:08 | 0:32:09
It is a dream come true, really. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:11
It's absolutely what I've wanted for her. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
I don't know how much more of hospital Antonia can take, really. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:20
It's so tough. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
She's had her 16th, 17th and 18th birthday in hospital. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:25
-19th at home? -19th at home. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:29
She's going to go home. | 0:32:31 | 0:32:33
Oh, my God! I've just realised. It's a really stupid thing to say! | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
'Wow! No pressure. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:42
'We only get to get her home if we finish the build. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:45
'What we don't need is any more delays to Antonia's room.' | 0:32:45 | 0:32:48
Nice! | 0:32:49 | 0:32:51 | |
Proper job, that, boy. Proper job! | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
-That's more like he, isn't it! -Yeah! | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
'That is a proper relief, | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
'as we've only got three days left and the decorators need to get in.' | 0:32:57 | 0:33:01
'After the screed, the next thing to go down is underfloor heating, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:06
'as soon as Billy's figured out whose job it is.' | 0:33:06 | 0:33:08
Who's going to lay the underfloor heating system? | 0:33:08 | 0:33:10
Obviously, it's got electrics to it, so is it an electrician's job? | 0:33:10 | 0:33:14
'Yes! Yes, it is, actually.' | 0:33:14 | 0:33:16
In my mind, heating is water. So it could be the plumber's. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
'But that's wrong!' | 0:33:19 | 0:33:20
So we're trying to work out who's... it's a demarcation. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:24
It's a union thing here. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:25
'It's you! It's you! | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
'This will shock you, Bill, but since the plumbers are busy plumbing, | 0:33:27 | 0:33:30
'the painters are painting, the chippies are chippying, | 0:33:30 | 0:33:32
'I think you're stuck with the ELECTRIC heat mat. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
'The entire ground floor is designed with Antonia in mind, | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
'but above all, her bedroom.' | 0:33:40 | 0:33:42
This is the most important room in the house, | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
actually, because we're going to have | 0:33:44 | 0:33:46
all the medical equipment in here. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
It's called an aseptic room, | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
which is somewhere that she can feed, | 0:33:50 | 0:33:52
and it's very clean and dust-free and germ-free. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:55
So this is a really important space. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:57
'These guys have come from Yorkshire | 0:33:58 | 0:34:00
'to fit a ceiling hoist to help Antonia | 0:34:00 | 0:34:02
'if she collapses. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:03
'With only two days to go, it's all about speed now. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:08
'But a flooring which resembles a 1,000-piece jigsaw is not helping.' | 0:34:08 | 0:34:12
And unfortunately, some idiot has decided | 0:34:12 | 0:34:14
that they're going to put it down herringbone style. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:16
Laurence! | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
Planking goes down a lot quicker. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:19
There's a lot more wastage with this. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
So how much more time? | 0:34:21 | 0:34:23
Did you say it was twice as much? | 0:34:23 | 0:34:25
-Three times longer. -Three times longer | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
to do this particular style of flooring. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:29
So this really wasn't an ideal situation | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
in which to put down herringbone floor? | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
-No. -No. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:34
So we should take the designer outside | 0:34:34 | 0:34:36
and have him publicly flogged. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
'Or we could set Billy on him. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:40
'That's worse than a flogging.' | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
She can't turn corners. | 0:34:42 | 0:34:44
She's always got to go in a really big circle. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
So she's got a nice space to turn in. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
So she's got enough space here to really, you know. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:51
And who thought of that, then? | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
Yeah! But who invented the Round Table? | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
Ah! Well, it was King Arthur. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:58
No. Sir Cumference! | 0:34:58 | 0:34:59
Sir Cumference! | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
Come on, sausage, let's go. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:02
'I've changed my mind, Billy should be publicly flogged for that joke. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
'Better yet, tarred and feathered, and we've got just the stuff!' | 0:35:05 | 0:35:09
It goes down one single layer, | 0:35:11 | 0:35:13
and it's got wax in it then, and it sets solid. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
But it goes off quicker? | 0:35:16 | 0:35:17
Goes off quicker, so you've got to be careful. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
How long have you been in the McAdam tarmac industry? | 0:35:19 | 0:35:23
-25 years. -It's a lovely industry. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:25
It is. I love the smell of asphalt when it's been laid. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:28
I know! I know! I came up a road the other day in Wales, actually, | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
and it was like black velvet all the way through the mountain. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:34
It was gorgeous. Are you married? | 0:35:34 | 0:35:37
I am, unfortunately! | 0:35:37 | 0:35:38
How long would it take to get a divorce pushed through? | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
'Seriously! Smoother than a freshly-laid drive, that man! | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
'Honestly! | 0:35:45 | 0:35:46
'Going less smoothly is that herringbone floor. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
'It hasn't even been started in Antonia's room, | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
'pushing our most important room behind schedule, yet again.' | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
Is there ANY chance we can change the flooring in Antonia's room... | 0:35:56 | 0:36:00
-Yes. -..to something else? | 0:36:00 | 0:36:02
It's taking so long to lay. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:03
-Perfectly all right. -You seem very malleable. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:06
Almost like an Olympic gymnast, you seem very flexible today. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:09
I mean, there's no point in us all, you know, | 0:36:09 | 0:36:12
crippling ourselves just for one rather foolish | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
and rather frivolous design decision. | 0:36:15 | 0:36:18
But, fine! There you go! | 0:36:18 | 0:36:20
'Who was that? | 0:36:20 | 0:36:21
'Seriously, who was that man? And what has he done with Laurence?' | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
Tick-tick-tick-tick... | 0:36:24 | 0:36:26
'Anyway, we've got him to change his mind about the floor, | 0:36:26 | 0:36:28
'but maybe I should have held on to my veto card a little bit longer.' | 0:36:28 | 0:36:32
-What the...? -I did say, I said in Antonia's room, it's going LA crib. | 0:36:34 | 0:36:39
I've designed this wallpaper especially for her - | 0:36:39 | 0:36:42
-hence the As and the... -Rampant zebras. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
Which are something which she's very much interested in. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:47
But you can't just take seven things | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
-that people like and nail them together and... -Yes, I can. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
-It's barking, Laurence. -It is entirely barking, | 0:36:52 | 0:36:54
but it's entirely commensurate with the way | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
that I think teenage girls are barking. | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
As the owner of two myself, | 0:36:59 | 0:37:01
and my two were literally licking that when they saw it. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:04
'OWN two daughters, Laurence? Really? | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
'Still, Antonia's room is now getting papered and floored, | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
'and this lot are determined to get it right for her. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
'Now, you may be thinking we haven't met Antonia very much, | 0:37:13 | 0:37:15
'that's because visiting her in hospital is difficult, | 0:37:15 | 0:37:17
'but I've heard she's well enough to see me, | 0:37:17 | 0:37:19
'so there's a chance to get to know her. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:21
'You know, her illness is so rare | 0:37:21 | 0:37:22
'that in medical circles, conditions like these | 0:37:22 | 0:37:24
'are sometimes called zebras, | 0:37:24 | 0:37:27
'which explains why Antonia's room is covered in them.' | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
They're so cute, aren't they? | 0:37:30 | 0:37:31
They are. They're just very cool. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
If you press that button that's flashing... | 0:37:34 | 0:37:36
It is an attention seeker, that is. Seriously. | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
It's like a child, you have to ignore it. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:41
So you've been almost sort of institutionalised to this. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:44
I mean, surrounded by all of these machines. | 0:37:44 | 0:37:46
-Yeah. -It is a lot to have to deal with at your age. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:49
I try and stay positive, | 0:37:49 | 0:37:51
but it is difficult, and sometimes I do, like, get really upset over it. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:55
But how do you keep that positivity up all this time? | 0:37:55 | 0:37:58
Has there been times when it's slipped, or have you managed? | 0:37:58 | 0:38:01
Yeah, like, I've had times when I've been in so much pain. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
When I was in London, I was on such a high dose of morphine. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
When you have, like, chronic pain, and it is that all the time, | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
people say you get used to it and you, like, learn to deal with it. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:17
I don't think you do, | 0:38:17 | 0:38:18
you kind of just learn to stop, like, saying anything about it. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:22
How amazing is your brother? | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
Oh, I love my brother. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:28
He came and got a job in London so that he could be nearer to me. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:32
He'd come in after work and he'd be so exhausted. | 0:38:32 | 0:38:35
He'd be sat there, like, falling asleep. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
I think he'd just do anything for me, really. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41
-And your mum? -My mum's a superhero. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:44
It is amazingly tight-knit, the three of you. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
Mm. Yeah. | 0:38:47 | 0:38:49
We always have been a close family, but I think this whole experience, | 0:38:49 | 0:38:53
we've gained a lot of perspective for a start, | 0:38:53 | 0:38:55
about, you know, that you should cherish your family | 0:38:55 | 0:38:58
and every day is, like, special, really, | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
because you never know what's going to happen. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
I don't know what I'd do without them. | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
So what are your hopes? | 0:39:08 | 0:39:10
Just to go back to normal life, really. | 0:39:10 | 0:39:14
I don't really mind, | 0:39:14 | 0:39:16
but I just want independence and freedom, really. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
How excited are you about coming home? | 0:39:19 | 0:39:21
Super excited. Super, super excited. | 0:39:21 | 0:39:23
Are you going to be well enough to come back? | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
Touch wood. | 0:39:25 | 0:39:27
So how does it feel | 0:39:27 | 0:39:28
knowing that we're just days away from the possibility | 0:39:28 | 0:39:31
of you actually getting home? | 0:39:31 | 0:39:33
I don't even really think I completely believe it yet, | 0:39:33 | 0:39:36
to be honest. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
They are basically giving me, like, a new chance at life. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:42
For me to get home will be like a dream. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:46
Will you promise me something, that no matter how excited you are, | 0:39:46 | 0:39:50
that you will not come home if you're not well, | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
and that you will not make yourself do anything | 0:39:53 | 0:39:55
because you think you ought to? | 0:39:55 | 0:39:57
-Pinky swear. -Pinky swear? | 0:39:57 | 0:39:58
-Yeah. -All right. | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
'Of course, Antonia's health must come first, | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
'but we want to finish this house no matter what, | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
'so that it's ready for her whenever she's able to come home. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
'As we head into the final day, the house is buzzing.' | 0:40:09 | 0:40:12
Brilliant stuff, we've got the garden finished, | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
we've got the lawn down, the tarmac in. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:16
'He's on a roll, isn't he? | 0:40:16 | 0:40:17
'Mark, tell us a bit more about what's going on.' | 0:40:17 | 0:40:19
And then in here, we've got | 0:40:19 | 0:40:20
Oliver fitting the last of the machines in here. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:22
They've finished all the grouting off. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
-'Any more?' -Then in here we've got all new floor laid, | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
the skirtings are nearly finished. | 0:40:27 | 0:40:28
'Mark, be a fridge.' | 0:40:28 | 0:40:30
Fridge, shelf, door, beautiful. | 0:40:30 | 0:40:33
'It's all about the little details, and I don't mean Mark. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:37
'In the garden, it's all hands on decking. Ha-ha-ha! | 0:40:37 | 0:40:40
'And the turf is on a roll. Honestly, you can't buy this stuff.' | 0:40:40 | 0:40:43
It's starting to look the part, isn't it? | 0:40:43 | 0:40:45
-It is, yes. -You going to be done in time? | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
Because we are running... hours now. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
The answer to the question has to be yes. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:53
But, yeah, we'll be there. | 0:40:53 | 0:40:55
'One of the most important bits of kit has turned up, | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
'Antonia's life-saving oxygen supply, | 0:40:58 | 0:41:01
'with taps in every ground-floor room.' | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
24 hours a day, that's accessible for her. | 0:41:05 | 0:41:07
-Wow! -Yeah. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:09
She'll have small portables, as well, | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
that she can carry with her when she goes out. | 0:41:11 | 0:41:14
But this is to give her a supply when she is in the home. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:17
Without the oxygen, she couldn't come home. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:19
'Drawing on the wallpaper? I used to get in trouble for that.' | 0:41:21 | 0:41:24
Well that's, that's very lovely. | 0:41:24 | 0:41:26
Thank you very much indeed. All you need is a permanent marker, | 0:41:26 | 0:41:29
some acrylic paints, | 0:41:29 | 0:41:31
and about five or six years in an Italian art school. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:33
This is going to be very sort of elegant Mum's room? | 0:41:33 | 0:41:37
Well, this is an escape. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:38
My heart goes out to the parents and I think that when you are dealing | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
with everything on a daily basis, it is so important | 0:41:41 | 0:41:45
to have a sanctuary, have a space that you can call your own. | 0:41:45 | 0:41:49
'He's very good, isn't he? Above all the schmutter, he's very good.' | 0:41:49 | 0:41:53
Get everything piled up. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:54
If we can get the cleaners in there, that's the room almost ready. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:57
'Right up until the last minute, | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
'we're still inundated by incredibly thoughtful touches. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:05
'Hang on. That table looks familiar. | 0:42:07 | 0:42:09
'Oh, my goodness! Look at that.' | 0:42:09 | 0:42:12
This is their old table. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
The top is, yeah. Then on that side... | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
You've taken a section out here? | 0:42:16 | 0:42:17
That's gone so that we can get wheelchair access. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:20
Look at these! | 0:42:20 | 0:42:21
Well, this represents the family, you've got the mother, the two kids, | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
obviously, this is where, for the first time, | 0:42:24 | 0:42:26
they can sit together and enjoy a family meal. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
-What a beautiful thing. -It's lovely, isn't it? | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30
That's a lot of thought gone into a table, mate, that's fantastic. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
Cheers. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:34
'Isn't it wonderful what people can do? | 0:42:34 | 0:42:35
'They've put body and soul into making this house a home. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:39
'And they're making sure every last detail counts.' | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
The sun's going down, so it's about half past nine at this stage. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:48
People still making things. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:51
People inside still trying to put things together. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
It's basically going to be a very long night, | 0:42:54 | 0:42:57
so we'll see you in the morning. | 0:42:57 | 0:42:59
'Nine days ago, we met a family | 0:43:03 | 0:43:05
'shattered by a cruel medical condition.' | 0:43:05 | 0:43:08
When things like this happen you never think that it would be me, | 0:43:08 | 0:43:11
or anyone to do with my family, but it is. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
'With a house she'd been unable to come home to for three long years, | 0:43:15 | 0:43:20
'Antonia's outlook was bleak.' | 0:43:20 | 0:43:22
I don't know how much more Antonia can take of being in hospital. | 0:43:23 | 0:43:27
I got to a point where I didn't ever see myself coming out of hospital, | 0:43:28 | 0:43:32
and I thought it was just going to be forever. | 0:43:32 | 0:43:34
'But these local heroes responded to our SOS in a huge way, | 0:43:36 | 0:43:40
'battling through the hottest July day on record.' | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
People are just streaming with sweat. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:46
I think we have to send them home early. | 0:43:46 | 0:43:47
-Right, OK, I'll do that. -It's just not safe, is it? | 0:43:47 | 0:43:49
'And the result? | 0:43:49 | 0:43:51
'Well, it will bring Antonia home and give her a new chance at life. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:55
'We've replaced the old front porch with a brand-new one | 0:43:59 | 0:44:01
'to make the impossible possible. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
'Antonia can now enter her own home once more. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
'Inside, the living room has been opened out to create a homely | 0:44:07 | 0:44:10
'and accessible space where the family can all be together again. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:14
'The warren of narrow doors and small rooms | 0:44:15 | 0:44:17
'has been removed to create this new and spacious kitchen-diner. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:22
'And a supply of oxygen and hoists around the entire ground floor | 0:44:22 | 0:44:26
'will give Antonia the freedom to move she's been longing for. | 0:44:26 | 0:44:29
'Meanwhile, a whole new extension at the back of the house | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
'means Antonia now has a proper room all of her own. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:36
'It's done up in the polar opposite of hospital decor, | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
'and it's complete with an aseptic area for preparing her medicines. | 0:44:41 | 0:44:45
'And a wet room. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:46
'For Mum, the days of sleeping on the floor are over. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
'Her room is now a haven of relaxation | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
'with its own dressing room. | 0:44:54 | 0:44:55
'The decluttered bathroom radiates simple elegance. | 0:44:57 | 0:45:00
'And when Samuel comes to stay or for when Antonia's mates sleep over, | 0:45:02 | 0:45:06
'there is a stylish and sophisticated new guest room. | 0:45:06 | 0:45:10
'And that's not all. The garden is now a green, serene paradise | 0:45:10 | 0:45:14
'filled with butterfly-friendly planting, | 0:45:14 | 0:45:16
'wheelchair-friendly decking, | 0:45:16 | 0:45:18
'and the family's beloved rose as a centrepiece. | 0:45:18 | 0:45:21
'It'll be all the more life-changing for Antonia, | 0:45:23 | 0:45:25
'who hasn't even set foot outside hospital for months. | 0:45:25 | 0:45:29
'But that's all about to change. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:31
'Today, the medics have given her the all clear to come home.' | 0:45:32 | 0:45:36
I love the fresh air. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
I'm actually quite well today. | 0:45:46 | 0:45:48
I was really worried that I was going to catch a cold or something, | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
but I didn't, so I'm good. | 0:45:51 | 0:45:52
I mean, today is the culmination of a long, long, long time, isn't it? | 0:45:55 | 0:45:59
To actually finally get your sister actually home. | 0:45:59 | 0:46:01
Yeah. She came out of the hospital today and said, | 0:46:01 | 0:46:05
"Oh, it's amazing, just some fresh air," | 0:46:05 | 0:46:07
you know, and you forget that she hasn't had that for so long. | 0:46:07 | 0:46:10
So that is so special. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:13
This morning, I woke up and I thought it was Christmas Day, | 0:46:17 | 0:46:20
and I leapt up and danced around the room, which is quite sad, I suppose. | 0:46:20 | 0:46:25
We're going home. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:28
It's so exciting, isn't it? | 0:46:29 | 0:46:31
Are you excited? | 0:46:32 | 0:46:34
Very excited. And Antonia is ecstatic, as well. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:36
She's very, very nervous, but excited. | 0:46:36 | 0:46:39
It won't be too much for her today? | 0:46:39 | 0:46:41
No, she's ready for it. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:43
Definitely. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:44
Oh, my God, this is so crazy. | 0:46:44 | 0:46:46
I can see the roof. | 0:46:46 | 0:46:48
-Samuel! -Hello. | 0:46:56 | 0:46:58
Hello. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:01
Oh, Samuel. I love you so much. | 0:47:04 | 0:47:06
-Are you ready? -Yeah. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:21
Super ready. | 0:47:21 | 0:47:22
Oh, my God! Look at the drive! | 0:47:24 | 0:47:26
-Oh, it's amazing. -Yeah, well, access, | 0:47:26 | 0:47:27
we kind of thought it was important for you | 0:47:27 | 0:47:29
to be able to get an ambulance if you need to, in and out, | 0:47:29 | 0:47:31
-and enough turning space. -It's amazing. -It's amazing. | 0:47:31 | 0:47:33
-Oh, look, there's a little bench. -Oh, it's amazing. | 0:47:33 | 0:47:36
Your front door used to be there, and it's not any more, it's there. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:40
This is to make maximum use of the inside, | 0:47:40 | 0:47:42
but also to give you easy access. | 0:47:42 | 0:47:44
Are you calm enough? | 0:47:44 | 0:47:45
-Are you all right? -Yeah. | 0:47:45 | 0:47:47
-Promise not to peek? -Pinky swear. | 0:47:47 | 0:47:49
-Pinky swear? -Yeah. -OK. | 0:47:49 | 0:47:50
-Shall we get started, then? -Yeah. | 0:47:50 | 0:47:52
This will be something that you can do yourself, | 0:47:52 | 0:47:55
but not with your eyes closed. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
SHE LAUGHS | 0:47:57 | 0:47:59
Does not smell like hospitals. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:01
We've created a home that means | 0:48:04 | 0:48:05
you can all be back together as a family after so long. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
Open your eyes. | 0:48:09 | 0:48:11
-Oh, my God. -Oh, my God. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:14
-It's beautiful. -It's amazing. -It's amazing. | 0:48:14 | 0:48:17
That sofa looks super comfy. | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
Look at someone's artwork. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
There's all my pictures of me and Plum. | 0:48:24 | 0:48:29
Can't believe it, I can't believe it. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:33
It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:48:33 | 0:48:35
It's crazy, isn't it? | 0:48:35 | 0:48:37
Doesn't even look anything like it. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:39
And look at the hoist. | 0:48:39 | 0:48:41
Oh, wow. | 0:48:41 | 0:48:42
If you wanted to have some time on the sofa, | 0:48:42 | 0:48:44
you can use the hoist to get up and down, move about. | 0:48:44 | 0:48:46
Also, as we know, there is always a danger of you passing out, | 0:48:46 | 0:48:49
falling to the floor. Whoever's with you has got the hoist then | 0:48:49 | 0:48:52
to able to lift you and get you back in. | 0:48:52 | 0:48:54
And then you can just put me on the sofa. | 0:48:54 | 0:48:57
-Yeah. -I don't have to lie on the floor for hours. | 0:48:57 | 0:48:59
-Normal stuff. -It's so cool. | 0:48:59 | 0:49:01
What's the beeping? How's the beeping? | 0:49:05 | 0:49:06
Are you all right? | 0:49:06 | 0:49:08
-Your heart rate up? -I'm fine, I'm all good. | 0:49:08 | 0:49:10
Right, so this is just the first bit. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:12
I could just live in here. | 0:49:12 | 0:49:13
Oh, no, you wait till you see the rest of it. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:15
Ready? Do you want to take the lead? | 0:49:15 | 0:49:17
Oh, my gosh! Look at our kitchen. | 0:49:22 | 0:49:24
Wow. | 0:49:24 | 0:49:26 | |
Look, it says VSA. | 0:49:26 | 0:49:28
That is so, so beautiful. | 0:49:28 | 0:49:30
It's amazing. | 0:49:30 | 0:49:32
-Oxygen. -This is your piped oxygen, | 0:49:32 | 0:49:34
which goes up and around and to every room in the house. | 0:49:34 | 0:49:37
So wherever you are, you don't have to take a bottle. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:39
You can unplug and plug in. | 0:49:39 | 0:49:40
You're not allowed to box it in, | 0:49:40 | 0:49:42
but you are allowed to have a little table top over the top. | 0:49:42 | 0:49:44
So we've done that to try and make the least impression on the area. | 0:49:44 | 0:49:47
Cos we don't want this to look... | 0:49:47 | 0:49:48
Like a hospital, yeah. | 0:49:48 | 0:49:49
And it isn't, is it? | 0:49:49 | 0:49:51
It's my home. High-five. | 0:49:51 | 0:49:53
That's very cool. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:55
Do you recognise the table? | 0:49:55 | 0:49:57
It's our table, isn't it? Oh, it's absolutely amazing. | 0:49:57 | 0:50:00
Oh, it says free to fly. | 0:50:00 | 0:50:02
-It does. -Look at the butterfly on the corner. | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
It's so gorgeous, I love it. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:08
Wow. It is absolutely beautiful. | 0:50:08 | 0:50:11
-I love it. -It's so cool. | 0:50:11 | 0:50:14
-I'm a bit like... -I know, it's quite overwhelming. | 0:50:14 | 0:50:16
I didn't expect it to be so perfect. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:18
If you think about it, that's all of your house, isn't it? | 0:50:18 | 0:50:21
-Think of the shape of your house. -Yes, it is. | 0:50:21 | 0:50:23
-Taken a few walls out. -You've taken a lot of walls out. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:26
Samuel's still trying to work it out, isn't he? | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
I just can't believe it. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:31
It's amazing. | 0:50:31 | 0:50:32
Oh, my... | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
Oh, my God! | 0:50:36 | 0:50:38
Look at the prints! | 0:50:40 | 0:50:43
-Wow. -I can put all of my make-up on. | 0:50:43 | 0:50:47
The zebras are so cute. | 0:50:47 | 0:50:48
It won't surprise you to know that this is the only wallpaper | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
-like it in the world. -It is beautiful. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:53
It's been designed for you by Laurence, with the A, obviously, | 0:50:53 | 0:50:56
and the zebras and the butterflies. | 0:50:56 | 0:50:57
I love it. | 0:50:57 | 0:50:58
It's so cool. | 0:50:58 | 0:51:00
Essentially, hoist goes from here all the way through... | 0:51:00 | 0:51:06
and out and along. | 0:51:06 | 0:51:08
Oh, my goodness, look at that. | 0:51:08 | 0:51:10
And disappears around the corner here to see the next part. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:12
Do you want to come and have a look? | 0:51:12 | 0:51:14
This is absolutely... | 0:51:14 | 0:51:16
Oh, my gosh. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:17
-..brilliant. -That looks so amazing. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:20
That looks like a really comfy bed. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:22
It's not just comfy, it does all kinds of amazing things. | 0:51:22 | 0:51:25
So, obviously, it is a medical bed as well. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:27
-I love it. -It is absolutely brilliant. | 0:51:27 | 0:51:30
Obviously, important part of this for your meds. | 0:51:30 | 0:51:33
To have your own fridge here for your meds. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:36
And this area here is the... | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
-What do you call it? -Sterile area for my lines, | 0:51:39 | 0:51:42
and my TPN and my medicines. And it's not white! | 0:51:42 | 0:51:46
I absolutely love it. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:49
It's absolutely perfect. | 0:51:49 | 0:51:51
The wallpaper's not too bonkers and over the top? | 0:51:51 | 0:51:54
It's bonkers and over the top, and I love it! | 0:51:54 | 0:51:56
THEY LAUGH | 0:51:56 | 0:51:59
Is this what you wanted and hoped for and needed? | 0:51:59 | 0:52:01
This is everything. | 0:52:01 | 0:52:02
It is absolutely perfect, isn't it? | 0:52:02 | 0:52:06
Everything she needs is here, and it's beautiful. | 0:52:06 | 0:52:09
We can just have a completely fresh start, | 0:52:09 | 0:52:11
and Antonia can be in here | 0:52:11 | 0:52:13
and you can just do whatever you like and we can do whatever we like. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:16
It just feels like a home. I love it. | 0:52:16 | 0:52:19
Is it what you'd hoped for, Antonia? | 0:52:19 | 0:52:21
Yeah. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23 | |
It is. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25 | |
Georgie is going to love it. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
She'll probably move in. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:28
She probably will. | 0:52:28 | 0:52:30
Interestingly, she's so excited, she's outside. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:32
Do you want to show Georgie your room if I get her in? | 0:52:32 | 0:52:36
-Yeah. -Yeah? -Georgie! | 0:52:36 | 0:52:39
Isn't it amazing? It's amazing. | 0:52:43 | 0:52:45
So beautiful, man. | 0:52:45 | 0:52:47
Oh, you're making me cry! | 0:52:49 | 0:52:51
It is so cool. | 0:52:53 | 0:52:54
I'm so excited. | 0:52:56 | 0:52:57
Antonia's oxygen levels have dropped, | 0:53:01 | 0:53:04
and we had to change over an oxygen bottle, | 0:53:04 | 0:53:06
so we're taking a light pause | 0:53:06 | 0:53:07
midway through showing the family the house, | 0:53:07 | 0:53:09
so that she can get her energy levels back, | 0:53:09 | 0:53:11
and when we're comfortable that she's safe | 0:53:11 | 0:53:13
and the nurse will stay with her, | 0:53:13 | 0:53:15
then I can take Mum, Victoria and Samuel upstairs. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:18
If you have any collapses, you're completely safe | 0:53:18 | 0:53:21
in your bedroom at home... | 0:53:21 | 0:53:22
..or the lounge or the kitchen. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:25
THEY LAUGH | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
Wow. | 0:53:34 | 0:53:35 | |
-So nice. -Isn't it lovely? | 0:53:37 | 0:53:39
It's really nice. I love it. | 0:53:39 | 0:53:41
This is absolutely beautiful. | 0:53:41 | 0:53:43
Why this is brilliant is, you can know Antonia's safe | 0:53:45 | 0:53:48
and you can come home any time, whenever you want to. | 0:53:48 | 0:53:52
You've taken a lot of responsibility, haven't you? | 0:53:52 | 0:53:54
Yeah. | 0:53:54 | 0:53:56 | |
I'm really, really proud of you. | 0:53:56 | 0:53:58
I love you. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
-BOTH: -Wow. | 0:54:15 | 0:54:16
It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:54:18 | 0:54:19
It's so nice, isn't it? | 0:54:19 | 0:54:21
This is so beautiful. | 0:54:21 | 0:54:24
So beautiful. | 0:54:24 | 0:54:25
-Yeah. -Better than a hospital floor? | 0:54:26 | 0:54:28
Just slightly. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:32
It's just nice to able to stop | 0:54:32 | 0:54:34
and have somewhere lovely, which is quiet. | 0:54:34 | 0:54:36
And to know she's happy. | 0:54:38 | 0:54:40
It takes the stress off you, it takes the responsibility off of you. | 0:54:40 | 0:54:45
You can actually just go back to being mum and brother and son. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:49
-Do you know what I mean? -Yeah. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:51
It's perfect. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:52
Oh, my goodness gracious me. | 0:54:55 | 0:54:58
Oh, my God. | 0:54:58 | 0:55:01
It's absolutely amazing. | 0:55:01 | 0:55:04
-Oh, my... -A bigger decking area | 0:55:04 | 0:55:06
where you can actually have friends round, | 0:55:06 | 0:55:08
-you can sit outside. -Sit outside. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:09
You can get pals, you can do whatever you want with it. | 0:55:09 | 0:55:12
You said you didn't much with the garden! | 0:55:12 | 0:55:13
Yeah, I know, I was lying. | 0:55:13 | 0:55:15
Antonia, this is just perfect, isn't it? | 0:55:15 | 0:55:18
It's amazing. | 0:55:18 | 0:55:20
You guys couldn't have done a better job for us. | 0:55:20 | 0:55:23
-What's flying around? -Butterflies. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:28
We've chosen the plants on the basis of getting butterflies in | 0:55:28 | 0:55:31
so they're already in here. | 0:55:31 | 0:55:33
It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:55:33 | 0:55:35
It is so, so gorgeous, peaceful and quiet and pretty. | 0:55:35 | 0:55:41
This is amazing. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:43
Really nice to just capture us as a family, as well, | 0:55:43 | 0:55:47
with all of the designs and everything you've done. | 0:55:47 | 0:55:49
It couldn't be more perfect. | 0:55:49 | 0:55:51
And just knowing that I'll be able to be safe... | 0:55:52 | 0:55:55
..is really, is just amazing. | 0:55:56 | 0:55:59
Do you want to meet the people that did it? | 0:55:59 | 0:56:01
Yeah, I really want to meet the people that did it. | 0:56:01 | 0:56:03
Oh, look at everyone! | 0:56:11 | 0:56:13
On you come! | 0:56:14 | 0:56:15
Thank you so much. | 0:56:21 | 0:56:22
I don't even know what to say. | 0:56:22 | 0:56:24
You guys...have kind of given me, like, a new chance at life, really. | 0:56:24 | 0:56:31
I'm just so grateful. | 0:56:31 | 0:56:32
I don't know how to put it into words, | 0:56:32 | 0:56:34
but you've changed my life, and I'm so grateful for it. | 0:56:34 | 0:56:38
I just don't know what to say. | 0:56:40 | 0:56:42
To see someone lose their independence | 0:56:42 | 0:56:45
over the last couple of years is the hardest thing | 0:56:45 | 0:56:47
because it's out of anyone's control. | 0:56:47 | 0:56:51
We can't do anything about it, and we're all helpless. | 0:56:51 | 0:56:54
To have just been able to see her be able to have that independence, | 0:56:54 | 0:56:57
be able to go round the house, | 0:56:57 | 0:56:58
and just do whatever she likes is just the biggest gift. | 0:56:58 | 0:57:01
I can't put it into words. It's amazing. | 0:57:01 | 0:57:03
Hi. | 0:57:08 | 0:57:09 | |
There's a butterfly theme running through this design, | 0:57:12 | 0:57:14
and it's really appropriate when you think about it, | 0:57:14 | 0:57:16
because Antonia's at that stage in her life | 0:57:16 | 0:57:18
where she should be spreading her wings, | 0:57:18 | 0:57:20
but despite the best efforts of all the medical staff looking after her, | 0:57:20 | 0:57:23
they couldn't get her home. | 0:57:23 | 0:57:24
But these people have. | 0:57:24 | 0:57:25
So now she CAN spread her wings, | 0:57:25 | 0:57:27
she can be that teenager and then flower into a woman, | 0:57:27 | 0:57:30
and have all her friends around and do what people do. | 0:57:30 | 0:57:33
That is an extraordinary gift, don't you think? | 0:57:33 | 0:57:35
Maybe you know somebody who needs your help. | 0:57:35 | 0:57:38
-Hi, princess. -Hiya. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:41
-It's amazing! -It only exists for you. -I know! | 0:57:47 | 0:57:51
Thank you so much. | 0:57:51 | 0:57:53
-You all right, my darling? -Thank you. | 0:58:03 | 0:58:05
-Thank you. -Take care, all right? | 0:58:05 | 0:58:07 |
