I've met some amazing people on DIY SOS. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
Some of them even like to give me a bit of a grilling. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
-COMPUTER GENERATED VOICE: -Can I ask you a question? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
-Yeah, go ahead. -Why don't you do any work on The Big Build? | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
Ryan is a funny, warm and caring 24-year-old man, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
but he's trapped in hospital 50 miles away from his family. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
Not seeing my family all the time is not good. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
I miss them. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
A brain injury five years ago has split this family apart. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
I don't matter. There's only Ryan that matters. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
So, we want to bring him home, but first we've got to work together. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Go on, say it. Go on, say it. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Ho-ho-ho. Stop distracting me! | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Go and fix everything. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
It will take an almighty effort... | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
To be able to help anybody is good. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
To be able to help anybody for free is even better. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
But thanks to an inspired local community... | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
This is going to be life-changing for him when he comes home. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
..we might just get a young man back home to his family. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
They've turned out, and they've just smashed it. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
West Country boys, you can't beat it. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
We have just nine days to do the job, all the usual suspects are here, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Gabrielle Blackman is our designer this week, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
and when we put up an ad asking for help in Bristol, this lot turned up! | 0:01:06 | 0:01:11
This is DIY SOS - The Big Build! | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
20 years ago, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
when warehouse worker Dave Pollard and checkout operator Rachel married, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:41
they bought a small three-bed house in Hartcliffe in south Bristol. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
It wasn't long before they filled it to the brim, with four kids. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
Jason, Ryan, Darren and Gemma. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
It was fine, it was lovely. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
It was a little bit of a struggle, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
but we didn't find it much more difficult bringing up one than we found it | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
bringing up four. It seemed to be fine over the years. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
It was just fun to be around. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
20 years later, the Pollards are still there. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Jason, the eldest and the only one to have left home, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
remembers the bustle fondly. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
My ma and dad didn't really like it that much, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
because we used to play football in the house, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
and you can see a bit of damage on the chandelier right there. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
There was always someone around, and there was always noise being made, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
and there was always drama happening, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
and you can't really get any peace and quiet even if you wanted it. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
It was very busy all the time. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
For the Pollards, having four kids in a small three-bedroom house | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
was a challenge, but they loved their lives being so full. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
However, not all the boys were so noisy. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Over the years, if you had to narrow it down, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
Ryan was by far the best behaved child we ever had. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
If he was going down town, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
he was always offering if I wanted to come with him. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
He was the kindest brother out of them all. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
Ryan loved his family first, but football came a close second. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
Ryan used to go over on the green with his dad and play football. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
Even myself, I used to look forward to finishing work early to go and | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
get all the boys out. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
And of course, myself, Ryan, loved that. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Miss it. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
I really miss that, you know. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
Five years ago, when Ryan was 19, | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
a series of events began that would bring their busy lives to a screeching halt. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
Ryan was having blurred vision and headaches for a few weeks. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
We'd been out all day, we'd come home, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
and then Ryan was led on the settee, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
and I knew that something wasn't right. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
So his dad took him to the eye hospital. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
The doctors saw that Ryan needed urgent medical care. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
He was rushed in for an emergency operation. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
It just came out of the blue, how serious it was. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
Ryan had a blocked ventricle. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12
The build-up of fluid was putting a dangerous amount of pressure | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
on his brain. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:17
It's one of those situations where you say, "Well, it don't happen to us. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
"These things don't happen to us, they happen to other people." | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
I got told the operation went fine. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
My mum eventually allowed me to go to the hospital to see him. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Because, obviously, they had to shave part of his head where they had to go in, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
and he was joking around saying, "Oh, I'm not going back to that barber." | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
"The barber's messed up my hair," and everything. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
It looked like Ryan was going to make a full recovery, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
but the ordeal wasn't over. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
Ryan would need further surgery. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
He had an operation to put a drain in to drain the fluid, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
but it was too late. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
By midnight, he was in a coma. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
They did another CT scan, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:56
and it was told to us then that there was significant brain damage. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00
Devastated. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
Ryan had lost control of his breathing, swallowing, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
and was partially paralysed. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
He was transferred to the nearest specialist neurological unit. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
Five years later, he's still there. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
Rachel visits every day, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
but it takes her two-and-a-half hours to get to the hospital. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
Hi, Ryan, how are you? | 0:05:20 | 0:05:21
I miss him. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
It was as though a part of you was missing. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
Ryan's body might not work, but his mind is still active, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
and he's able to communicate short sentences through a tablet. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
Not seeing my family all the time is not good. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
I miss them. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
I need to come home and be with my family. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
Saturday is the only day Dave and Rachel can bring Ryan home for the day. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
Ryan looks forward to coming home. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
That is the only thing that he wants to do. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
But he isn't able to stay the night. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
With no downstairs bedroom or bathroom, their small home isn't suitable. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
Just getting in the door is a big challenge. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
Obviously, the house is not huge, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
and obviously with the furniture and the doors, all the equipment, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
it's tight. It's tight getting him in, especially with his long legs. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
He's got such long legs. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
With Dave working six days a week, Rachel and Dave aren't at home much. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:27
The once noisy house is quiet and empty. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
It feels lonely in this house, because there's really... | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
They're only here a few hours a day at most. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
I love talking to people and telling people about my day, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
but my mum and dad are not here to tell my day to. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
The long hours are taking their toll. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
In the house, there's damp from the bathroom | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
and black mould downstairs - | 0:06:53 | 0:06:54
particularly worrying for Ryan, with his assisted breathing. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
Collapse on the sofa. Just exhausted most days. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
Ryan has spent five years in a hospital room 100 miles away from his family. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
It's been rubbish living in hospital. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
I want to go home. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:13
He doesn't like it at all. He doesn't. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
This family is torn apart. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
They need our help to get them back together. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
Sometimes when I leave, I cry walking up the road, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
because I know he wants to come with me. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
How have you managed to survive over these last few months? | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
Because it couldn't have been easy. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
You don't. You just do it. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
It's for Ryan. You just do it. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:38
You know you've got to do it. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
You have no choice. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
-He is my son. -If you think about it, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
the trouble is you can't get Ryan home, can you? | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
And you can't do it if we leave the house looking the same. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
In order to make this house viable as somewhere to get him home, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
we've got to completely change the shape of it. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
Yeah, that's what this is all about. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
That's what it's always been about. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:00
It's always been about just getting Ryan home. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
It doesn't matter how much we change it? I know that this is your home. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
It doesn't matter what you do to it... | 0:08:06 | 0:08:07
-Not at all. -..as long as Ryan's got a bedroom and a wet room, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
that's all I want. He's like a different person when he comes home. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
He is more engaged, he smiles more. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
When he's in there, he doesn't want to know. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
So, you think that if we can get him home it will make a difference to | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
-his potential future. -Definitely, yes, | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
because he'll be more willing to do things, which, the more Ryan does, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
the better it is for him. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:32
Are you ready to go and meet some of the builders? | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
-Let's go. -All right, let's go and tell them why it's | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
important, and then they get all fired up and all work at a million miles an hour during the week, | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
and that's how we make it work. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Good, good, good. Let's go for it. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
Come on. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
There are over 100 of Bristol's finest builders here, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
champing at the bit to get on with it. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
We're going to do our best, aren't we? | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
We're going to try and change things around, yeah? | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
-Yes. -So, we are going to change your house a lot. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
We do understand that, and we understand that is nerve-racking for you as well, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
even though something good is going to come at the end of it. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
I'd like to say to all these people here, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:06
that I'd like to really thank them. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
They don't really know much about Ryan's story, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
but Ryan has been in a care home for five years, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
and you guys giving your time, | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
your effort and your products is so much appreciated. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
We are going to applaud you. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:18
Thank you very much. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:19
If we are taking a lot out of the house and everything, | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
can I have the front door? | 0:09:26 | 0:09:27
You don't ask that kind of question until the owners have gone. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
LAUGHTER | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
To make this big build possible in nine days, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
some lovely trades have got in ahead of us and laid the foundations for | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
the brand-new extension. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:43
Back inside, before we can rebuild everything, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
we have to smash everything to bits. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
Don't it make you proud? | 0:09:57 | 0:09:58
Smashing aside, it's safety first on our site. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
You must have the appropriate footwear. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
Let's have a look at the sole on this. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Look at the sole, it's amazing. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
-I've been obliged... -Like Christmas. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
All the builders down this way are not just pulling their weight, | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
they're pulling down the ceiling too. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
CHEERING | 0:10:18 | 0:10:19
14 blokes to one lady. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
Well done, you! | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
Come on, chaps, the extension has arrived. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
Should we be helping with this, or have you got other things to do? | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
I've got plans to look at. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:32
I better get stuck in. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:33
-You mind your back. -Yeah... | 0:10:35 | 0:10:36
We know what you're like. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
Got a glass back, that boy. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
Glass back? Talk about speedy space making, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
the extension is barely off the lorry, and the panels are flying up. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
Look, Ryan, I'm working! | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
See, it's a little bit busy in here at the moment. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
TOOLS WHIR | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
And the sound of industry. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:56
Don't you just love it? | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
Whilst ripping everything out, | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
Mark reckons he's discovered the cause of all that black mould. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
This is one of the major problems we've got that's going on here. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:07
Every time they put a piece of furniture against the wall, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
it just sucks the moisture and the mould through. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
-It's terrible. -We need to redesign this small, damp | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
three-bedroom house into a lovely family home, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
so we're calling on the services of the magnificently talented Gabrielle Blackman. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
What have you got here? You've got a kitchen going there... | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
So, we've got the kitchen here... | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
Bear with, bear with... | 0:11:27 | 0:11:28
Her challenge here is to use every scrap of space | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
to accommodate Ryan and his family's needs, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
so knowing the thickness of the yet-to-be-built internal walls is key. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:38
Yeah, that's a new stud wall, comes in here. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
-And that wall, that's how we know we've got the space. -It's just this gap here is really crucial to me. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:45
This is stressing me out, this build, because it's smaller than we'd like, | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
to be honest. We'd love to give them more. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
-It is. -We've got to make the best of the space here, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
because we're constricted space-wise in this whole build, | 0:11:54 | 0:11:57
so we're not going to overcomplicate. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
No, we wouldn't overcomplicate it, would we? | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Who's ever said that you have overcomplicated? | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
-Never. -Never. -You know I hate that, I hate to gild the lily. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
Gaby's epic space battle is about getting Ryan back into normal family | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
life without lily gilding. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
At the front, we're installing a wheelchair lift, whilst inside, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
the mouldy living room will be transformed into a bachelor pad | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
for Ryan, with a wet room. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
The back of the house will be extended to include a new | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
kitchen and spacious living room. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
Upstairs, we're widening the hallway, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
redesigning all three bedrooms and installing a new bathroom. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
Whilst in the garden, it's about low maintenance, | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
so we're paving it with curved beds and a seating area. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
It's exactly what this family needs. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
-The general theme? -There isn't a general theme... | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
-Isn't a general theme? -No. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:46
I don't really like themes. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
-Isn't there? -No. It's just good design. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
But all TV designers have to go, "Yeah, this one's about... | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
"I've gone with a Rajisthani theme here." | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
I'm not a TV designer, I'm an interior designer in the real world. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
If I went and burst into people's house and said, "Moroccan", | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
they'd just go, "Get out." | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
So I have to just think, "What does this family actually want, | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
"what do they need, what do they like?" | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
-And just make that happen. -And that's why we love you, you see. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
That's why we love you, because you don't do that showing off for the sake of it, you know? | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Yep, she's magnificent, isn't she? | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
Forceful but kind, knows what she wants, and knows how to get it. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
Builders from all over the south-west are making Gaby's designs come to | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
life, but that doesn't explain why there is a man making tiny holes in | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
the house, or why it's starting to snow. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
Perhaps Mark can fill us in. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
-SHOUTING: -So, all this here... | 0:13:36 | 0:13:37
It's not Christmas. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:39
This was the problem for the damp, | 0:13:39 | 0:13:40
so it's all been taken out of the walls, | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
then it's all taken back and sucked away into here, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
completely removed off-site. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:47
We're going to ventilate the cavities, and that will cure all the damp. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:53
So there will be no damp or moisture in this house ever again. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
SHOUTING: OK, Mark! Thanks a lot! | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there's still a bit of damp, | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
and it's much worse than we thought. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
When I moved that up, we can see that the joist is right the way there. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-There's a lot of damp. -Look at all the mould up there, as well. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
They've overboarded it. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
They've overboarded it and it's still come away, hasn't it? | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
-Yeah. -Actually, and the boards above are rotten, as well, aren't they? | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
-Yeah. -That's a bit of a worry, that is, isn't it? | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
-You can't leave it. -No, you can't leave it. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
The upstairs joists are rotten through. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
With its walls filled with the wrong ventilation, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
double glazing and leaky plumbing, | 0:14:28 | 0:14:29
this house has become the perfect home for wood rot. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
And we weren't expecting this. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
Is it a bathroom going above here? | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
-Bathroom above here. -Including a bath? | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
-Yes. -Well, we have to change the joists, they're all rotted out. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
Oh, my God. It'll all have to come out. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
Well, there's a brick wall sitting up there on that floor. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
'And this small house is hiding a big secret.' | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
One of the problems we have is that this wall, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
which is actually made out of a kind of brick, is resting on this floor. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
You can see through the gap, there's nothing underneath, | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
there is no support underneath, and these boards are rotten. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
How much longer would it be before that rotted, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
and the wall just went straight down through the floor? | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
It literally was just a matter of time, wasn't it, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
before they ended up with that on their heads? | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
As the boys and girls knock down that wall resting on rotten timber, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
it's clear this job is getting much bigger. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
But no matter what it throws at us, we will succeed for Ryan. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
You see, he's had to live in a specialist neurological hospital for | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
the last five years, and that's just not right. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
Mum and Dad. Hello, mate, can I have a shake of the hand, there? | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
How are you? Nice to meet you. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
So, interesting thing about chatting to - doing an interview with | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
Ryan, is a bit like meeting the Prime Minister or Madonna, | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
you have to supply your questions in advance, so | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
Ryan has actually filled out - | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
spent some time filling out some answers for me. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
So, health assistant Sarah - she's best buddy, really - | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
helps Ryan get his communication tablet ready. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
How do you feel about being here, rather than at home? | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
Being in hospital all the time is not good, it's boring. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
So would... | 0:16:04 | 0:16:05
If you were at home, it means that your mum's doing most of your care | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
-for you? -I prefer having my mum doing my care, | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
because I know her and I feel more comfortable. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
Is your mum tougher on you when it comes to your physio than the physios are? | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
Yes, that's a nod! | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Do you know, I would have figured that was the case. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
I think I will make more progress when I go home, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
because my family will be there all the time to motivate me. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:32
I will be happier. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
Well, that's the plan, that's why everyone's working so hard for you. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
I can promise you that we will deliver a house that you can come back to | 0:16:37 | 0:16:41
by the end of next week, all right? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
Can I ask you a question? | 0:16:44 | 0:16:45
-Yeah, go ahead. -Why don't you do any work on The Big Build? | 0:16:45 | 0:16:49
LAUGHTER | 0:16:51 | 0:16:52
No, don't film me! | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
Ryan, that's not funny! Well, it is funny, but... | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
You wicked boy! | 0:17:00 | 0:17:02
You wicked, wicked boy, you knew that was going to happen! | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
Yep, it's clear from meeting him Ryan is a kind and witty young man | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
who's not a bad judge of character, too. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:11
To prove Ryan wrong, I'm going to help the floor being taken up - | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
by recording this voiceover. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
Jules could also use some of my indispensable wisdom at the front of the house, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
so I'm going to give it to him. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
Go on, then, what's on... I can see there's a look of concern in your eye. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
No, we talked, because we're having the lift there. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
Flattening out, and then having a little lift to take it down, right, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
so that's his access, yeah. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:35
And then we've got steps beside it, but there was talk of... | 0:17:35 | 0:17:40
A slope instead. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
Yeah, doing a ramp instead. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:43
What I'm suggesting is that we have | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
a sloped pathway. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:47
We've noticed on this job that you're getting a lot more involved with the design. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
You've redesigned the inside, taken the walls out, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
you've redesigned the ground floor, | 0:17:54 | 0:17:55
and now you're redesigning the front garden. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
I just like to bring an extra 30% if I can to every build that I'm on. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
-Yeah, yeah. -And for that 30% more of me, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
there's 70% less walls and rotten floor in the house, | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
which means that's 100% surprise for Gabby. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
I love a bit of building maths. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:12
Oh, my goodness! | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
-Yeah, we took out... -What's happened? | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
Well... Well, a few extra things happened. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
You see, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:23
first of all, right, it wasn't our fault. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
You've broken the whole house! | 0:18:27 | 0:18:29
It's very nice, isn't it? I like it, it's like a mezzanine, balcony. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
That's design for you. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
-That's design. -You've ruined everything! | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
Where is the house? | 0:18:38 | 0:18:39
Most of the house is in that skip. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
Not bad, is it? | 0:18:45 | 0:18:46
Well, not bad in the sense that our super-keen Bristol builders | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
overloaded the skip. Not to worry, | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
we've got Vince on hand to off-load the surplus into another skip. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
In your own time, Vince. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:57
Another muggy day, another muddy pile of rubble. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
Our Bristol crew has sprung into action like a well-choreographed ballet - | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
a Swan Lake of concrete, if you will. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
And here's a very heavy Darcey Bussell. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
Well, unfortunately I forgot my wellingtons, so I can't really go... | 0:19:10 | 0:19:15
You see how thick the concrete is, it's almost up to his wellies. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:19
You know, I can't go in with my dancing shoes on. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
OK, twinkle toes, this dancing is all very well, | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
but Jules' concreting and scaffold for the extension roof is getting in | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
the way of the landscapers working in the garden. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
They're cut off from the rest of the house, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
and the only way to find out about their plans is from the roof. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
Can you tell me, roughly, what you're doing in the back garden? | 0:19:36 | 0:19:41
We're putting in a boundary fence to give some privacy, | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
we're bringing the garden level up so that it's level throughout. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
We're making it low maintenance, a few planting beds. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
The family have got enough on their plate as it is at the moment. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
What they need is something that's pleasurable, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
but isn't going to give them a headache to keep up together. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
Is that why you volunteered to come along here, because the family's got so much on their plate? | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
What is going to be the result of this will be, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
I wouldn't say life-changing, | 0:20:04 | 0:20:05
but it will make a world of difference to these people. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
To be able to help anybody is good. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
To be able to help anybody for free is even better. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
We may have free help on this site, but we're not cheap. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
Whether it's installing proper drainage for Ryan's wet room, | 0:20:16 | 0:20:20
or a solid new floor, we're putting in quality stuff | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
that's going to last. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
Just one more joist to come in here to go onto this hanger up here, | 0:20:25 | 0:20:30
and then we can actually put the floor down upstairs, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
and we'll have floors and walls back in again. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
So, despite all the troubles that we've had during today, | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
it's starting to look the part. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
Time to catch up with the chippies, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
who have made the huge job of replacing the rotten floor look easy. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
-Good work, lads. -That's proper building. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
It's not what we expected, we expected it to be MDF everywhere. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
So why did you decide to come along and join in? | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
I want to do it just to help them out. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
If it happened to me or my family, I'd just want these lads to help me out. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
I've never met this chap before, and I've been using his tools. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
We're just all mucking in. Absolutely brilliant. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
Without this kind of teamwork, we would never be able to work this fast. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:13
It's not all plain sailing, there are loads of new walls flying up, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
and Billy, our Jurassic Spark from the age of dinosaurs, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
is in a bit of a pickle about the wiring. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
Erm, we're OK going downstairs, aren't we? | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
You know, the thing he does every day, as a profession? | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
We've got this special heating system that's wireless, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
-and what does that incur? -Well, | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
with got to get Cat 5 from the valves on the heater system down | 0:21:33 | 0:21:39
-to the stat. -Cables? | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
-Yeah. -For this wireless system, | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
it needs eight cables coming up to an alarm box here. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:48
So, wireless is not really wireless any more, is it? | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
Right, time for a coffee, Billy? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
Is it a wireless coffee? | 0:21:53 | 0:21:54
But there's no time for a coffee break for our other builders. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
The extension is being blocked up, ready for render, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
and the roof tiles are being laid. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
That means it's watertight and ready for some floors. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
Getting this room all cleaned out. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
We're going to get the insulation down in here. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
Then we're going to put a damp-proof membrane over the whole floor, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
and get the screed down in here tonight, which means we've got the finished floor in, which is amazing. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
We've got to get this all... We've got to get the roof insulated, boarded, | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
all of the wiring in there as well, you know? | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
So, even though this is a slow process, | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
we've just got to keep moving at the same speed we started at. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
And there's a delivery round the front to help out. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
Hop to it, everyone. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
Luckily, we've got a bit of young blood in to lug it round the back. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
I'm surprised you're stood here watching screeding, | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
rather than being involved in screeding. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:44
We were younger. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
-Do you not miss it? -My back doesn't. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
-Does it not? -No. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
-How old are you? -21. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:52
-How old are you? -23, mate. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
-And how old are you? -47. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:55
LAUGHTER | 0:22:55 | 0:22:56
On the end, yeah, that doesn't really work out, does it? | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
To show you just how fast these boys are flying, here's a speeded up, | 0:23:01 | 0:23:04
entire screeded floor going in five seconds flat. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:09
Damp-proof membrane, insulation, screed, brand-new floor. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:15
I like this stage of the build, | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
because you can see the house without its clothes on, if you like. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
You know, this is all going to get covered up with plasterboard, | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
and then plaster and paint and so on and so forth, | 0:23:22 | 0:23:25
but for the moment you can actually see the skeleton of the house, | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
and all its innards, its plumbing, its electrics. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
But it is our job now to cover it all up, as quick as possible. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
As we start a new day on site, | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
whilst the plumbers install the heating and a new boiler in the loft, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
the plasterers are hiding Billy's electrics, | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
and Gaby's attention is focused on Ryan's new bedroom. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
Yeah, I want that, I want this vibe in here | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
to feel completely different, and these double doors are going to be really important. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
You can see the old door here, so this is the space he would have had to have got through | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
-before, this little bit here. -Yeah. | 0:23:57 | 0:23:58
-So we've doubled that... -And now we'll be able to roll the doors back... | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
And because his wheelchair is larger than the average, | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
so we need a massive - | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
we need an 1,800 turning circle throughout this really small house. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
So that means that this now is all usable space, | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
so we're really pleased with this. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
'The question is, are the measurements bang on, | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
'or did we overdo the demolition?' | 0:24:17 | 0:24:18
I was sure... I thought we had two sliding doors. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
1652 is there, so, basically, you have got two sliding doors, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
they just won't meet in the middle. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
Our struggles with this room are nothing compared to Rachel's - | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
she travels every day to see Ryan at hospital, and it's such a long way. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:38
Because she can't drive, | 0:24:38 | 0:24:39
she does the entire journey using public transport. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
It is tiring. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:47
But you've got to do it. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
I've got no choice - I've got to do it, because Ryan needs me there, | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
and I know he copes better with what has happened to him if I am there. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
This journey now takes Rachel a staggering five hours of travel each day. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:06
When my mum was visiting once a week, it was not good. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
I like having her here. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
Rachel now does the five-hour trip five times a week to see Ryan. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:18
Once there, she helps Ryan get washed and dressed with Sarah, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
Ryan's health care assistant. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
It's a necessary but undignified routine for Ryan, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
and he will only do it with those he really trusts. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
I prefer having my mum doing my care, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
because I know her and I feel more comfortable. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
I'd like to find out more about how Rachel has held this family together. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
How tough has it been for you and your husband to get through | 0:25:46 | 0:25:50
the last five years since Ryan was taken ill? | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
It felt as though there was no end, that he would never come home. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:59
It is very stressful, but you do it. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
So how have you got through? | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
-Just carrying on. -Do you ever think forward, and hope? | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
What is it that you're hoping the future holds? | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
Oh, Ryan's ultimate dream, apart from coming home, is to walk again. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:16
It would be a lot of hard work on Ryan's part, | 0:26:16 | 0:26:21
but because he wants it that much he will do it. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
-Will you make sure he does it? -Of course I will. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
-You seem really in your mind to have decided that your life is Ryan's life now. -Yes, it is. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:33
-Nothing for you at all? -No, I don't matter. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
It's only Ryan that matters. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
You do matter. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
I don't see myself like that. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:42
Well, I know you don't, but that's part of what's so amazing about you. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
-Thank you. -How many people do you think could actually manage to have done | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
what you've done for the five years? | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
I thought every mum would. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
Yeah. Every day, though. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
-All that distance. -No, but isn't that what life's about? | 0:26:54 | 0:26:56
Your family. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:57
So what will make you happy now? | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
-Having Ryan home. -It comes back to the same thing every time, doesn't it? | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
There's literally been nothing else in your mind for the last five years. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
No. Nothing at all. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
And you always believed it was going to happen? | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
Yeah. Even if I had to chuck him over my shoulder and carry him home, | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
he was coming home. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:17
And he's 6'3" and I'm only 5'2", | 0:27:18 | 0:27:20
so I don't know how I would have managed that. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
What do you make of the fact that all of these people have come out and joined in? | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
It makes you realise that there are nice people out there, | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
that are willing to help you if you ask. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
And at the end of the day, Ryan's coming home, | 0:27:32 | 0:27:34
and that is all this is about. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
You heard the message. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
Ryan's coming home. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:41
That's what's driving this steam train of a build. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:44
Now that the plumbers' and sparks' first fix is done, | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
we've got to start patching the walls. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
It's a busy time for Chris. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
I might have to go and have a cup of tea in a minute. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
If I'm honest with you. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:55
And hope the fairies come in and it's done! | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
Release the boarders! | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
I recommend it, for anybody who ever gets a chance to do this - do it. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:07
You won't regret it. And I'll tell you what, you'll walk away with a buzz. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
This man's energy level is just unbelievable. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:14
Now that we're getting the walls finished, | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
that means one thing for Gabby - | 0:28:17 | 0:28:18
she gets to find intricate and time-consuming ways of covering them. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:23
There's nothing like getting Mark in a good mood and then throwing | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
a Gabrielle tile plan at him. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
-What've you got? -It's beautiful, isn't it? | 0:28:29 | 0:28:31
-It's a lovely glass tile. -That is beautiful. | 0:28:31 | 0:28:33
-Where is that going? -In the wet room. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:35
The splashback on the kitchen? | 0:28:35 | 0:28:36
-No, in the wet room. -There's not a splashback in the kitchen? -No. | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
It's for all of the wet room? | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
-Yeah. -Is it? | 0:28:41 | 0:28:42
-And they're that size. -No, the big ones. -And they're that size?! | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
-They're that size. -Oh, they are that size, actually. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:47
Look how excited Paul is about this. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
I am going to kill you. I can't believe it. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:53
I'm not sure Paul was that excited. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:55
Anyway, you've got to hand it to Gabby - | 0:28:55 | 0:28:57
she certainly knows how to pamper the family with luxurious, | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
difficult and weird tiles. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
And Ryan's sliding doors are still causing us problems, I'm afraid. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
So we'll just double-check that one. What have you got there? | 0:29:05 | 0:29:08
What little problems has it thrown at you? | 0:29:10 | 0:29:12
It's tight on this one, so the door has to flush with the liner... | 0:29:12 | 0:29:17
-The liner? -..ultimately, so. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:18
Yeah. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:19 | |
It's a winner, though. It's going in. | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
This lot don't seem fazed. | 0:29:22 | 0:29:23
You see, Bristol tradesmen just crack on. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25
The garden might have been cut off, | 0:29:28 | 0:29:29
but the bearded, green-fingered team are doing their best to keep going. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:33
The tiny holes from the damp fix earlier are also being covered up, | 0:29:33 | 0:29:36
and - wow - check out those lightning borders. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
They've boarded a whole house in a day! | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
Well done. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:43
APPLAUSE | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
Plumbers are done, boiler and air circulation is finished, | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
electrics in, and even Mark is happy. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:52
That's another box ticked. The roof's all done. They're just cleaning it all down. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:55
We're going to get the scaffolding taken away, get the rendering finished. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
I can't believe the speed this job's going at. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
If you thought that was quick, Chris has got a carefully worked-out plan for the plasterers. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:05
Open the doors, throw 12 plasterers in there... | 0:30:05 | 0:30:08
-That's it. -15 bags of Multi Finish, and say, "Get on with it." | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
Job done. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:12
Wow - look at them go. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:13
They're slapping it on faster and thicker than my make-up artist does - same colour, though. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:18
See, that's what you need. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:20
A bit of positivity. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:21
I think these West Country trades have earned themselves a builder's bacon bap. | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
Ah, there you are. Can I interest you in a sausage, bacon, egg? | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
No, can I have orange, please? | 0:30:30 | 0:30:31
-A coffee... -Would you like egg, bacon, sausage? | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
Can I have an apple, please? | 0:30:37 | 0:30:38
An apple? Do think this is the nicest, poshest building site you've ever been on? | 0:30:40 | 0:30:45
-Thank you. -My pleasure. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:47
Anybody for a fruit tea, perhaps? | 0:30:47 | 0:30:49
Camomile? Anybody interested in a rooibos? | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
-Mint? -Got any green tea over there? | 0:30:54 | 0:30:56
You, off the site. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:57
LAUGHTER | 0:30:57 | 0:30:59
'I'm into healthy eating like anybody else, but there's a line, and he just stepped over it.' | 0:30:59 | 0:31:04
Our own health Adonis Jules is almost ready for the lift. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:07
We're going to, erm, | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
put drop kerbs here, directly in front of our access. | 0:31:10 | 0:31:13
Young Sam here's finishing off his bit of brick work here today. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:17
The boys over there are finishing off that wall. | 0:31:17 | 0:31:19
Then that's it. We've broke the back of this front area. | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
They've turned out, and they've just smashed it. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:24
West Country, see. West Country boys, you can't beat it. | 0:31:24 | 0:31:28
Jules and his boys are working tirelessly to make access easier to | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
the house. For Ryan, every day in hospital is a struggle. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:37
Ryan's health assistant, Sarah, knows this only too well. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
I get the impression that he's depressed at the moment. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:43
He's extremely depressed. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:45
He's an extremely sad young man. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
He doesn't have a life here, as such. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
He's not living - he's existing. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:54
And for any young man that's horrible. | 0:31:54 | 0:31:56
And getting home will change, | 0:31:56 | 0:31:57
and you think he'll attack his physio with more... | 0:31:57 | 0:32:00
I think he will. I think he will make... | 0:32:00 | 0:32:03
I mean, I go home with Ryan quite regularly on a Saturday, | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
and even the difference on a Saturday with Ryan is a big deal. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:11
He's much more relaxed. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:12
His shoulders are drooped. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:14
Where generally here Ryan won't communicate. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:17
A key part of Ryan's rehabilitation is visiting the hospital gym down | 0:32:17 | 0:32:21
the corridor, but if Ryan is feeling depressed he doesn't want to go. | 0:32:21 | 0:32:25
It's not that he's being grumpy or difficult, just sad and unmotivated. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:30
Hi, Ry! | 0:32:33 | 0:32:35
Are you ready to go up to the gym? | 0:32:35 | 0:32:37
I think they've set up for you to try and have a bit of football. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
No? | 0:32:40 | 0:32:41 | |
Because of his mental health challenges, | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
it's hard for even Ryan's speech and language therapist, Steph, to get him to go. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
It's fine if you don't want to do it, but give it a try. | 0:32:48 | 0:32:53
What do you reckon? | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
Are you sure we can't tempt you? | 0:32:57 | 0:32:59
No, OK. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:00
It's clear getting him home could help to lift Ryan out of his depression, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:07
motivate him to work on his own mobility. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
So, as hard... You know, as much as you've been able to do for him, | 0:33:10 | 0:33:13
and I know you do amazing work here, it's pretty critical we get him home. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:16
It is. It is, you know, and for his mum, and his dad. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:21
How long have you been looking after him? | 0:33:21 | 0:33:23
Erm, I've been with Ryan just over three years now. | 0:33:23 | 0:33:27
So you must really get a bond going. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
You must be really fond of him, | 0:33:29 | 0:33:30
so whilst everyone's looking forward to him going home... | 0:33:30 | 0:33:33
It's heartbreaking at the same time. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:34
-Is it? -Yeah. -Are you going to miss him? | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
-Loads. -You're a little bit emotional about that, aren't you? | 0:33:36 | 0:33:40
-He's a special kid. -It's pretty intense stuff you do with him. | 0:33:41 | 0:33:45
He's a huge part of this place, you know. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
Everybody wants him to go home, | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
but at the same time nobody wants to say goodbye. | 0:33:50 | 0:33:53
Sarah's just one of an army of amazing carers all across the country looking after people. | 0:33:53 | 0:33:59
Back on site, the builders are giving it everything to make this build happen. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:02
They're not just changing lives - | 0:34:02 | 0:34:04
these plasterers are breaking records. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
They've only gone and finished all the plastering on the fourth day! | 0:34:06 | 0:34:10
Everyone's mucked in together. | 0:34:12 | 0:34:14
-Probably the best day of my working life. -What, really? -Yeah, it is. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:18
-100%. -You know, you speak to anyone, it's just been unbelievable. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
We'll allow Chris a moment to wallow in his plastering majesty. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:26
And when it's all high-quality, there's no... | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
Look at it. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
There's an old saying. If it generally looks right... | 0:34:31 | 0:34:34
Sorry - if it looks right, it generally is. | 0:34:34 | 0:34:36
Now, I'm not an expert, but generally speaking that doesn't look right. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:40
That's not just a little pop, is it? | 0:34:41 | 0:34:43
-He went through it. -Do you think... | 0:34:43 | 0:34:46
INDISTINCT REPLY | 0:34:46 | 0:34:48
Mark leads the investigation into the guilty party. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
-Who did that? -It's one of the plumbers finishing off the piping in the loft, | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
but they seem strangely reluctant to step forward and accept blame. | 0:34:56 | 0:35:01
I only take a size eight. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
-You take a size eight! -And that's a size ten. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:05
-Right, OK. -LAUGHTER | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
Chris, I found him through a process of elimination. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:10
Basically, all his mates stitched him up. | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
Cut his feet off. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:14
Yeah. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:15 | |
All right, let's get it fixed, then. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
The plaster is only just dry before tilers start in Ryan's wet room. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:24
They need to get on with it. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:25
There's a lot of wall, and a lot of Gabby's tiny tiles | 0:35:25 | 0:35:28
to cover them with. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:29
The upstairs bathroom is smaller and the tiles are much bigger so that | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
shouldn't be a problem. Oh, no, hold on, wait - | 0:35:33 | 0:35:36
Gabby has brought in funky hexagon tiles from the future. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:40
Well, basically we can't cut these with our dry cutter, | 0:35:40 | 0:35:44
because when we scribe it, you pull it along the top bit, | 0:35:44 | 0:35:47
but it won't go into the groove. | 0:35:47 | 0:35:49
So we've got to go outside and wet cut every... | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
-Every single one. -..every tile. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:53
So it'll take about five times as long as it normally does. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
Yep, it will. These lads have the patience of a saint. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:59
As do the guys installing the bifold doors. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:01
These doors will open out into the garden to increase the space so Ryan | 0:36:01 | 0:36:05
can move more independently. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:07
Beautiful, eh? | 0:36:08 | 0:36:10
So, now the bifold doors are in, and the scaffold down, | 0:36:11 | 0:36:14
the gardeners are free to catch up a bit of time. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
A little birdie told me one of our gardeners is rather overqualified. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:21
I think we need to find out a little bit more. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
Did I hear you say he built satellites? | 0:36:24 | 0:36:26
Like, a satellite builder? Is that what you're saying? | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
-Is he making that up? -No, no, true. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:30
Satellites in space that he's worked on. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:32
A bit different, isn't it, building gardens and working in rocket science? | 0:36:32 | 0:36:35
Absolutely, but this isn't rocket science, that's the great thing about it. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:39
It's fantastic. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:40
Well, gardening may not be rocket science but it helps to have rocket scientists | 0:36:40 | 0:36:44
doing your gardening, plainly! | 0:36:44 | 0:36:45
And, of course, skilled trades installing Gabby's nifty kitchen and those amazing sliding doors of doom. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:51
Why are you laughing, Lee? | 0:36:54 | 0:36:56
-I don't know why I'm laughing, at all! -You think it should be higher? | 0:36:56 | 0:36:59
Yeah, yeah, I can't get my hand in there. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
With the plaster drying, the builders are booted out. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:04
Gabby's decorating team have been let loose to roll out the tricky | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
asymmetrical wallpaper in Gemma's room. | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
Decorating is all about pampering, so we have arranged for Diane - | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
a very talented decorative artist - to paint Rachel's master bedroom. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:19
It's a technique from a bygone era. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:22
It was Victorian British, wasn't it? | 0:37:22 | 0:37:24
-Yeah. -When did it start? -18th century. -18th century? -Yeah. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:27
-Royalty, aristocrats. -Because this is hand-painted, we're not having to fit... | 0:37:27 | 0:37:33
The scale and everything we've been working with is perfect for this room. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:37
So it's bespoke and perfect, so it doesn't look ridiculous, | 0:37:37 | 0:37:40
having an over-scale paper with lower ceilings. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:44
She's in such demand, she's even done walls for Lady Gaga, | 0:37:44 | 0:37:47
but she's not our only esteemed decorator. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:50
Yeah, Andy works in Buckingham Palace. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:53
-Does he? -Yeah. -Does he, really? | 0:37:53 | 0:37:55
I don't work in Buckingham Palace. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:57
I've worked in Buckingham Palace. | 0:37:57 | 0:37:59
-What do you do? -It was part of an interview for a job. | 0:37:59 | 0:38:02
Because there's only one decorator, actually, at Buckingham Palace, | 0:38:02 | 0:38:05
that does all the internal work. But I had to think of the travelling and, unfortunately, | 0:38:05 | 0:38:09
the salary didn't cover the travelling costs. | 0:38:09 | 0:38:11
-Wow! -So he said no to the Queen but yes to us! | 0:38:11 | 0:38:15
-Ha-ha! -Hurray! | 0:38:15 | 0:38:17
For this family, only the best will do. | 0:38:19 | 0:38:22
Because it has been tough. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
And Ryan's dad has seen his whole world turned on its head. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
So, when you look at Ryan now, what do you see? | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
I see my son. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:34
I see my son. I see my son not as fit and able as what he used to do, | 0:38:34 | 0:38:39
but he's still my son. He will always be my son. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41
And his life is much more difficult than mine. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:45
Because, if you go back a few years, | 0:38:45 | 0:38:47
life was bumbling along very nicely and, all of a sudden, | 0:38:47 | 0:38:50
it's like someone's just ripped the whole thing up. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:52
It hits you like a bomb. Hits you like a bomb. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:55
And the first year, the first couple of months, I was just numb. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:58
I was just, what's going to happen? | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
You just think you're going to get back to a normal life again. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
What do you want for him? | 0:39:02 | 0:39:04
I want him home. | 0:39:04 | 0:39:05
I want him home. He wants to come home. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:08
Rachel dearly wants him home. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:10
Um, you talk about Rachel very powerfully. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
She's a rock. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:16
She... | 0:39:19 | 0:39:20
What she does for her family is beyond... | 0:39:22 | 0:39:24
She's... | 0:39:24 | 0:39:25
She's amazing. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:28
So I guess it must have hit her pretty hard, when all this started. | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
She doesn't show it, but she must feel it. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
Obviously, she must feel it. But she doesn't show it. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
She doesn't show it. | 0:39:40 | 0:39:41
I'm really pleased that this is happening for you. | 0:39:41 | 0:39:45
That's his... | 0:39:45 | 0:39:46
His only wish is to come home. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:47
And with the help of you guys, which we appreciate so much, | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
and we are highly honoured, it's going to happen. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
Well, we're honoured to help. | 0:39:55 | 0:39:57
With only one day left on the build, | 0:39:57 | 0:39:59
these fantastic chaps have managed to get all the big stuff done - | 0:39:59 | 0:40:03
kitchen units, tiling, flooring. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
It's just the fiddly stuff now. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:07
After all that worry about Ryan's doors... | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
Hurray! Thanks, Lee! | 0:40:10 | 0:40:13
That is... Lee has been dealing with the doors of doom. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
Yeah, the doors of doom. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:18
-Bit of trouble? -A little bit, yeah, but we got over it. | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
The breakfast bar has arrived. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:23
It's the perfect fit and the perfect place for the family to hang out | 0:40:23 | 0:40:26
together and put... | 0:40:26 | 0:40:28
-Make pastries on that. -Do you like making a bit of pastry, | 0:40:28 | 0:40:32
-darling? -Yeah. -What's your speciality? | 0:40:32 | 0:40:34
-Vol-au-vents. -Oh, vol-au-vents? | 0:40:34 | 0:40:37
Vol-au-vents, don't you know! | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
I told you Bristol was fancy! | 0:40:39 | 0:40:41
This lot seem to have outdone themselves. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:43
Mike, am I wrong in thinking... | 0:40:43 | 0:40:46
No, I don't want to say it, OK... No, I... | 0:40:46 | 0:40:48
Say it. For goodness' sake. We haven't got all day. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
-We've got to be finished shortly. -We're ahead, that's what I'm saying, we're ahead. | 0:40:51 | 0:40:55
-Yeah. -We're going to finish early. -We're doing really well. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:57
And you're not very often wrong, is he? | 0:40:57 | 0:41:00
Sh! Mark, don't say it, you'll curse us all! | 0:41:00 | 0:41:02
We're going to be out the door by four o'clock today. | 0:41:02 | 0:41:04
-What are you doing? -And it's all over to Gabrielle then. | 0:41:04 | 0:41:08
I knew I shouldn't have said anything. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:10
-Four o'clock is only two hours away. -We've done everything, we've made the home... | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
-No, no! -We've done the garden. We've done the kitchen. -Shut up! | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
-Stop it! -We're trying to get out the door by four o'clock today. -Yeah. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
-Nice one. -Mark, it's not good to try and finish early. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
Everyone is going to take their foot off the pedal! | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
How do you feel about four o'clock today? | 0:41:24 | 0:41:26
You know, for us to be ahead and then the plasterers... | 0:41:26 | 0:41:28
Now even the posh wallpaper man is saying it. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:31
You know, it just kind of...domino effect, so we're in a good place. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
-See what I mean? -Job done! | 0:41:34 | 0:41:35
See? Now, look. It was all going so well but that looks like a freshly | 0:41:37 | 0:41:42
plastered and painted wall being attacked by firefighters. | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
You look very beautiful today. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
Mark? | 0:41:48 | 0:41:49 | |
You've made a hideous mistake, haven't you? | 0:41:49 | 0:41:51
Don't give me... No, don't give me a ginger beard! | 0:41:53 | 0:41:56
Imagine if Santa was ginger. | 0:41:58 | 0:42:00
Santa might well have been ginger. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
-He's just aged. -You'd get loads of work at Christmas! | 0:42:02 | 0:42:04
Go on, say that. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
Say that, go on, say it! | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
Ho, ho, ho. Stop distracting me! | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
Go and fix everything! | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
-Get out! -Not even a ginger Santa can make us finish at four o'clock. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:19
But with a mammoth effort from everyone... | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
-Oh! -..we're not far from the finish line and a few small victories. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:30
But does it work in the other sink? | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
It does! It does! Amazing. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
It's a miracle! | 0:42:38 | 0:42:39
Gabby's on finishing touches... | 0:42:40 | 0:42:42
Those look really, really good. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:44
..and finishing touchy-feelies. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:46
-Loved today. -Oh, I loved today as well. | 0:42:47 | 0:42:50
I nearly went in for a full-on snog there by mistake. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:52
I sort of missed my angle! | 0:42:52 | 0:42:54
I don't want to do it again in a hurry, but... | 0:42:54 | 0:42:58
But I will say, if you're back in Bristol, I'll be there. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:02
-You will. -Yeah. -That is the realest explanation of the show I've heard in a long time. | 0:43:02 | 0:43:07
We're all knackered, I don't want to do it again in a hurry, | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
but if you come back, give me a call. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11
Amazing. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:13
That's our team for you. | 0:43:13 | 0:43:14
Work until they drop and then get up and keep going. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:18
Bristol, we salute you! | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
We talked a lot about finishing early on this one, didn't we? | 0:43:21 | 0:43:24
We talked a lot about it. | 0:43:24 | 0:43:25
And it has happened, because now is officially the time when we're supposed to finish | 0:43:25 | 0:43:29
and, as you can see, there are people here. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:31
Listen to the sound... The sound of work still going on in the background. | 0:43:31 | 0:43:34
And we reckon that going to go on until about 11 o'clock tonight | 0:43:34 | 0:43:37
and the interior's going to get done about 9.30. | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
These things never go the way you think, do they? | 0:43:40 | 0:43:42
Well, at least Billy has finished on time. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:46
His electrics are giving some much-needed light to the gardeners. | 0:43:46 | 0:43:50
ELECTRICAL FIZZ | 0:43:50 | 0:43:52
-Oh, no. -Billy! | 0:43:52 | 0:43:53
Nine days ago, we came to Bristol to meet a family shattered by a tragic | 0:43:59 | 0:44:03
head injury and a son trapped in hospital. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:06
It just came out of the blue, how serious it was. | 0:44:07 | 0:44:11
It hits you like a bomb. You just think you're going to get back to normal life again. | 0:44:11 | 0:44:15
Ryan is desperately unhappy in hospital, | 0:44:16 | 0:44:18
even with his mum travelling up five times a week to see him. | 0:44:18 | 0:44:22
Being in hospital all the time is boring. | 0:44:24 | 0:44:26
Not seeing my family all the time is not good. | 0:44:28 | 0:44:31
I miss them. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:33
Financially and physically it has put a strain on us, yes. It certainly has. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:36
Shed a tear every day. | 0:44:36 | 0:44:38
They couldn't bring him home because their cramped house couldn't | 0:44:39 | 0:44:43
accommodate Ryan and his wheelchair. | 0:44:43 | 0:44:45
Sometimes I cry walking up the road because I know he wants to come with me. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:50
They wanted to live together but couldn't make their house work. | 0:44:52 | 0:44:56
That was until builders and trades came together from all over the south-west | 0:44:56 | 0:45:00
to help adapt their home. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:02
And this is what they pulled off. | 0:45:03 | 0:45:05
We took a cramped, mid-terrace house and completely renovated it from top | 0:45:07 | 0:45:11
to bottom. | 0:45:11 | 0:45:12
Where the old kitchen was, we've added an extension, | 0:45:13 | 0:45:16
creating a new open space where the family can relax. | 0:45:16 | 0:45:20
We've also provided blinds for the match days | 0:45:21 | 0:45:24
as Ryan loves to watch his football on TV. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:26
Right next to it, we fitted a brand-new galley kitchen | 0:45:29 | 0:45:32
with a breakfast bar and all the mod cons. | 0:45:32 | 0:45:35
The old, mouldy living area is now a fully-equipped bedroom for Ryan | 0:45:37 | 0:45:41
with dark wallpapered interior, a bespoke hospital bed, | 0:45:41 | 0:45:45
automated lights and plenty of storage. | 0:45:45 | 0:45:47
The unused dining room has become an en-suite wet room and shower to | 0:45:49 | 0:45:53
maintain his comfort and dignity, | 0:45:53 | 0:45:55
all accessible by electric lift winch. | 0:45:55 | 0:45:58
Upstairs, the leaky bathroom and its rotten floor has been pulled out and | 0:46:00 | 0:46:04
replaced with a brand-new bathroom. | 0:46:04 | 0:46:06
This damp problem has been fixed for good. | 0:46:06 | 0:46:09
All the bedrooms upstairs have been beautifully redesigned. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:14
Rachel and Dave's room has been redecorated in a Victorian style | 0:46:14 | 0:46:18
with a custom velvet headboard | 0:46:18 | 0:46:20
and hand-painted flower mural that perfectly | 0:46:20 | 0:46:23
frames a restful space where they can sleep well, | 0:46:23 | 0:46:26
knowing Ryan is just downstairs. | 0:46:26 | 0:46:28
Lastly, the neglected garden has been turned into an accessible and | 0:46:30 | 0:46:34
private paved area. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:35
The huge bifold doors in the living room connect to the garden, | 0:46:36 | 0:46:40
doubling the living space for Ryan. | 0:46:40 | 0:46:43
A perfect way to spend more family time together. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:45
The hard-grafting Bristol trades have given this family the perfect space | 0:46:47 | 0:46:51
to be able to get their son home from hospital. | 0:46:51 | 0:46:54
You kind of know that your house is not going to be the house you've been in the last 26 years. | 0:46:57 | 0:47:00
Yes, we do, yes. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:02
-Yeah. -We had to change it a lot, so, if you're ready... | 0:47:02 | 0:47:06
Open your eyes. | 0:47:06 | 0:47:07
-Wow! -Oh, my God. | 0:47:09 | 0:47:10
-Wow! -Is this our house? | 0:47:14 | 0:47:16
Absolutely amazing. | 0:47:18 | 0:47:19
-I love it. -Do you? | 0:47:21 | 0:47:23
-Do you love it? -Yes. -Oh, I'm so pleased. -Fantastic. | 0:47:23 | 0:47:26
-This is the extension. This is the bit of the house that didn't used to be here. -Oh. | 0:47:27 | 0:47:31
-Have a seat on your sofa. -Amazing. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:34
Sit where you are going to snuggle up as a family. | 0:47:36 | 0:47:38
It is a lovely, warm house. | 0:47:39 | 0:47:41
It's all insulated. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:42
And we've dealt with the mould problem so that's not going to come back. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:47
-That's amazing. -Yeah, loads of space for Ryan as well. | 0:47:47 | 0:47:51
-That's the point, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
Ryan is going to love this. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:54
Hop up, then, and go through to your kitchen. | 0:47:56 | 0:47:58
I just don't know what to say. | 0:48:00 | 0:48:03
I can't believe that you've done all this. | 0:48:03 | 0:48:05
-In nine days. -Can you imagine, can you picture the family in here? | 0:48:05 | 0:48:09
-Absolutely. -Yes, I can, yeah. | 0:48:09 | 0:48:11
Especially Gemma, up to the breakfast bar. | 0:48:12 | 0:48:14
She's always wanted one. | 0:48:14 | 0:48:15
-Is that right? -Yeah. | 0:48:15 | 0:48:17
Just so that she could sit and have a chat with you. | 0:48:17 | 0:48:19
-Yeah. -Well, there you go. | 0:48:19 | 0:48:21
Right, let's show you around the rest of the place. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:24
-Upstairs, I think, next. -Thank you. | 0:48:24 | 0:48:26
-Oh, that's nice. -Oh, wow. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:33
-That's lovely. -Because you like Victorian stuff, don't you? | 0:48:33 | 0:48:35
Yeah. It's very Victorian, yeah. | 0:48:35 | 0:48:37
This is lovely. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:38
Wow! | 0:48:43 | 0:48:44 | |
That is lovely. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:49
That's not wallpaper on the walls. | 0:48:49 | 0:48:50
That's hand-painted by our artist, Anne, who's just... | 0:48:50 | 0:48:54
She's amazing. She just came in and created that on the wall to fit | 0:48:54 | 0:48:58
-around your bed. -Absolutely marvellous. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:01
Somewhere to come at the end of the day. | 0:49:01 | 0:49:03
-To relax. -You can't really burn out, I mean, | 0:49:03 | 0:49:07
so this is a place for you to come and relax. | 0:49:07 | 0:49:10
Yeah. I always put myself last. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:12
-Yeah, she does. -Will this help you put yourself a little bit further up | 0:49:12 | 0:49:15
-the order? -To come to this room, yes. | 0:49:15 | 0:49:18
Now Rachel and Dave get to see the most important room for them in | 0:49:21 | 0:49:25
the whole house. Ryan's room. | 0:49:25 | 0:49:27
-Oh, my word. -Oh, wow! | 0:49:31 | 0:49:34
Absolutely amazing. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:37
-Beautiful. -Oh, he's going to love this. | 0:49:38 | 0:49:40
-What a room. -The reason for the big double doors, by the way, | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
is because of the length of the wheelchair. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:45
-Yeah. -And if we'd used swinging, | 0:49:45 | 0:49:47
opening doors it would have been in the way of the space as well, so, | 0:49:47 | 0:49:50
by tucking them away in the walls... | 0:49:50 | 0:49:53
You get a lot more space. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:54
Perfect. | 0:49:54 | 0:49:55
We wanted to give him something that was proper manly, you know? | 0:49:55 | 0:49:58
-Yes. -Not hospitally, but manly. | 0:49:58 | 0:50:01
Absolutely gorgeous. | 0:50:01 | 0:50:02
The track is really important because he's a big lad, | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
not easy to shift around, so it's important that you have some | 0:50:05 | 0:50:08
tracks to be able to lift him and take him through to the bathroom. | 0:50:08 | 0:50:10
How lovely is this? | 0:50:11 | 0:50:13
-Wow! -This is amazing. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:18
Absolutely stunning. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:19
He might actually want to have a shower, now! | 0:50:19 | 0:50:21
Wow! | 0:50:21 | 0:50:23 | |
This is a wonderful space. What a transformation. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:26
-It's fantastic. -We can't thank you enough. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
Ryan's coming home. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:31
At last, Ryan's coming home. | 0:50:31 | 0:50:32
All the trades have gathered to welcome Ryan into the home they worked so hard on. | 0:50:34 | 0:50:38
It'll be the first time since he's been to hospital that Ryan has taken | 0:50:41 | 0:50:45
himself, unaided, through the front door. | 0:50:45 | 0:50:47
-Welcome home. -Welcome home, Ryan. | 0:50:58 | 0:51:01
Five years. Welcome home, buddy. | 0:51:01 | 0:51:03
After five years away, Ryan isn't hanging about. | 0:51:06 | 0:51:09
Oh, my gosh! | 0:51:15 | 0:51:17
Look at it. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:18
-RYAN: -I can't believe this is my house. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:22
Well, it has changed a bit. There is no doubt that it has changed a bit. | 0:51:24 | 0:51:27
This is just Ryan's room. Still got the whole house to come! | 0:51:28 | 0:51:32
-RYAN: -I love it. -I think we're going to get stuck on that one, aren't we? | 0:51:32 | 0:51:36
You need to go and check, yeah? Go on. | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
You see, Ryan has to have his carer with him at all times, | 0:51:39 | 0:51:41
and there are various medical things that need to be done during | 0:51:41 | 0:51:44
-the course of... Is that it, all done? -Yes, all done. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:46
Lovely. Thank you. | 0:51:46 | 0:51:48
And with fresh batteries in his life-support system, | 0:51:48 | 0:51:50
the tour continues. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:51
Ryan, so what you want to do is swing left and then you're going right, | 0:51:51 | 0:51:54
-you're going down the corridor, yeah. -It's amazing! | 0:51:54 | 0:51:57
Ryan, for you, what we've done is we decided to make this into the | 0:51:57 | 0:52:01
ultimate television area. | 0:52:01 | 0:52:02
So we've got a big-screen TV. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:04
We've got blackout blinds. | 0:52:04 | 0:52:05
The blinds on the skylights are automated as well so you can block all the light out, | 0:52:05 | 0:52:09
so you can have a proper movie night, | 0:52:09 | 0:52:11
watch the sport or whatever. | 0:52:11 | 0:52:13
-RYAN: -I love it. I love it. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:14
Double love it. All right, cool. | 0:52:14 | 0:52:17
-Smashing. -It just feels like home, already. | 0:52:17 | 0:52:21
It's time to show Ryan's siblings their rooms. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:24
Darren, first. | 0:52:24 | 0:52:25
Right, this is your space. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
Oh, wow, this looks incredible. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:29
-Proper bachelor pad. -Yes, it is. | 0:52:29 | 0:52:31
Yeah. | 0:52:31 | 0:52:32 | |
Next up, Gemma's room. | 0:52:34 | 0:52:35
Whoa! It's amazing what you've been able to do to such a small room. | 0:52:37 | 0:52:43
-I know. -Oh! | 0:52:43 | 0:52:45
I've never... | 0:52:45 | 0:52:46
-I'm OK, I'm just... -Emotional? | 0:52:47 | 0:52:49
Very emotional. | 0:52:49 | 0:52:50
All I was really expecting was for you to cater to Ryan. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:53
All we ever wanted was for Ryan to come home. | 0:52:53 | 0:52:57
It is amazing what you've been able to do in nine days. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:01
We wouldn't have been able to do this in about nine years, probably! | 0:53:01 | 0:53:04
-Happy? -Very much happy, thank you. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
You're not much of a huggy family, but if I sent your mum in now, | 0:53:08 | 0:53:11
-would you give her a hug? -Yes! | 0:53:11 | 0:53:13
Right. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:16
-Right, Gem, do you like it? -Love it! | 0:53:16 | 0:53:18
Right, this is for you. | 0:53:20 | 0:53:21
-Mm-hm. -For everything you've put up with, with me not being here, | 0:53:21 | 0:53:26
this is all for you. | 0:53:26 | 0:53:28
Don't cry! | 0:53:31 | 0:53:32
-Happy? -Very much. | 0:53:34 | 0:53:35
Come on, let's get you all back downstairs. | 0:53:35 | 0:53:37
Three, two, one, go. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:38
-Oh, it's lovely. -Wow. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:43
-RYAN: -I really love it. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:46
-Oh, well done. -Oh, you've moved on to "really love it"! | 0:53:46 | 0:53:48
I'm really impressed. That's great. | 0:53:48 | 0:53:50
Look at you. You're an emotional wreck. | 0:53:57 | 0:53:59
Yes! Mind you, I always am. | 0:53:59 | 0:54:00
I thought you were all supposed to be professional and... | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
We are, but there's so much love for him. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:08
It means so much to get him home. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:09
Yeah. Have we done all right? | 0:54:09 | 0:54:12
Brilliant. Absolutely amazing. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
The whole thing's really amazing. | 0:54:14 | 0:54:16
Just looking at them now... | 0:54:18 | 0:54:20
..as a family, sat in their back garden... | 0:54:21 | 0:54:23
That's how it should be, really, isn't it? | 0:54:26 | 0:54:28
Yeah. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:29 | |
As much as you've done amazing things for him... | 0:54:29 | 0:54:31
-Yeah. -You've got to kind of let him go, now. -That's what he needs, yeah. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:35
It's beautiful to watch. | 0:54:38 | 0:54:39
It is, isn't it? The simplest things. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
How little we value the simplest things. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:47
APPLAUSE | 0:54:47 | 0:54:48
This is Ryan's words of thanks. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:05
"All I wanted is to come home and be with my family. | 0:55:05 | 0:55:07
"I miss my parents, brother and sister every day | 0:55:07 | 0:55:10
"and have found it hard to cope knowing I can't be with them all, | 0:55:10 | 0:55:14
"or speak to them when I want to. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:16
"The last five years have been the hardest of my life. | 0:55:16 | 0:55:18
"I was ripped away from my family because of what happened to me, | 0:55:18 | 0:55:21
"but you have brought me home. | 0:55:21 | 0:55:22
"You will never know..." | 0:55:22 | 0:55:24
HE CLEARS HIS THROAT | 0:55:24 | 0:55:25
I'm not sure I can do this! | 0:55:31 | 0:55:32
"Thank you for what you've done for me. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:36
"You will never know the difference this will make to my life, | 0:55:36 | 0:55:38
"allowing me to once again be with my family. | 0:55:38 | 0:55:41
"We can all look to the future together now and won't feel so alone. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:45
"I can't believe this is real, but I am finally home." | 0:55:45 | 0:55:48
And then he's written... | 0:55:48 | 0:55:49
Don't know whether you can see it there. "I'm home." | 0:55:50 | 0:55:53
What you've achieved in there in nine days is absolutely amazing. | 0:56:01 | 0:56:05
We cannot believe it. | 0:56:05 | 0:56:07
We are so chuffed with it. | 0:56:07 | 0:56:08
Five years ago, when this happened to this boy... | 0:56:08 | 0:56:11
We never thought we'd get him home. | 0:56:13 | 0:56:15
You're amazing. Every one of you. | 0:56:16 | 0:56:18
Fantastic. | 0:56:18 | 0:56:19
Wet room's amazing. | 0:56:35 | 0:56:36
You know, when Ryan was taken so very seriously ill, | 0:56:39 | 0:56:42
the medical profession stepped in and did what they do. | 0:56:42 | 0:56:44
They looked after him, and they've been looking after him for five years. | 0:56:44 | 0:56:47
But they couldn't get him home. It took the skills of an electrician | 0:56:47 | 0:56:50
and a plumber and a bricklayer and a plasterer to get him back to his family. | 0:56:50 | 0:56:55
And sitting there watching him in the back garden, | 0:56:55 | 0:56:57
just listening to the conversation round him, that very small thing, | 0:56:57 | 0:57:01
for me, epitomises what a huge thing has been done here. | 0:57:01 | 0:57:05
Something we take for granted. | 0:57:05 | 0:57:07
You know, we can't help everyone, | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
but everyone can use their skills to help someone. | 0:57:09 | 0:57:12
MUSIC DROWNS SPEECH | 0:57:16 | 0:57:18 |
