This beautiful harbour makes a gruesome appearance in one | 0:00:01 | 0:00:05
of the most well-known horror novels in English history. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
Intrigued? Terrified? You should be. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
Find out where I am in just a few moments. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
On today's show, I'll be helping a couple hoping to replace work | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
with walks in North Yorkshire. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
And as we hit the property trail, one house makes them | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
tremble with anticipation. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
I'm shivering down my back and it's not because it's cold! | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
And then they sense the drama of the mystery house. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
-It's like something out of a television series, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
Welcome to North Yorkshire and Whitby Harbour. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
Now, it was here in the late 19th century that the author | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
Bram Stoker described Dracula's first arrival on English soil, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
when the ship that transported him from Transylvania | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
ran aground in a storm. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Mysteriously, all the crew members on board were found dead, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
including the captain, tied to the ship's helm. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
Stoker goes on to describe Dracula leaping ashore in the form | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
of a black dog and racing up these cliffs to the churchyard. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
He later went on a blood-sucking rampage throughout London. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
So, now I've got your teeth into this spine-chilling tale, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
I'm happy to say, this beautiful county has | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
so much more to offer than vampires and mayhem. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
North Yorkshire is bordered by Cumbria and Lancashire | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
to the west and Durham to the north. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
It is by far the UK's largest county, so it's no surprise that it | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
has plenty of attractions to satisfy even the most intrepid of explorers. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:10
It proudly boasts two National Parks - | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
The Dales provide stunning rolling green hillsides, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
while the Moors are wild and windswept, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
strewn with untamed heather to create a very atmospheric beauty. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
It is not just the landscape that is dramatic here. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
North Yorkshire has some of the finest remains of Medieval | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
abbeys anywhere in the country. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
The 11th century monastery Reivaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
is perhaps the most celebrated. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
But if you prefer a coastal view, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
then Whitney Abbey is particularly compelling. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Given that this is England's largest county, it comes as no | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
surprise that North Yorkshire's property prices vary greatly. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
The overall picture is an average detached property here | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
would cost you £265,000. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
That is £9,000 more than the national figure. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
And a general rule is the further east you go, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
the better value you get for your money. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
However, when it comes to the coast, prices can rise quite significantly, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
with homes in towns such as Whitby costing up to 10% more. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
Now, inland, the National Parks of the Moors and the Dales | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
are very desirable areas. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
And a prime property in a historic village such as Ampleforth, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
expect to pay a 5% premium. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
But wherever you choose to live in this area, one thing is guaranteed, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:37
there is a rich mix of different architectural styles to choose from. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
Many of North Yorkshire's homes are old farm houses | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
made from the local sandstone. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
Prices for a four-bedroom cottage typically start at around | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
the £5,000 mark, although the hefty price tag is likely to | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
include a sizable plot of land. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Picture postcard stone cottages in the Georgian style are also | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
highly sought after. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Three-bedroom properties away from the coast | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
can cost upwards of £350,000. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
But if you are seeking a home with a sea view, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
then head to locations such as Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
in Scarborough. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
Prices for a four-bedroom terraced house | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
begin at around £250,000. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
Well, there are plenty of stunning properties | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
on offer in North Yorkshire, but will any of them suit our buyers? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
Let's meet them and find out. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
Rod and Lynn have lived in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
for the last 35 years. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
Retired GP Rod has already hung up his stethoscope | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
and with Lynn about to give up her job as a nurse, | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
they feel that now is the perfect moment to escape to the country. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
We think now is the right time to move for us. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
I am coming up to retirement | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
and we hope in the next phase of our life, we can indulge | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
some of our interests. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
And they are hoping those interests, including Rod's basketball, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
can be played out in the North of England. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
We have settled on North Yorkshire because we have family there | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
and it is very near to the coast, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
it has good access to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
This move certainly isn't a chance to put up their feet, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
as our buyers have plenty of plans for a very dynamic lifestyle. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
I hope that our new house, with a much larger garden, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
will make life more active, so we will be able to do much more walking, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:28
much more cycling and generally visit places far more frequently | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
because we will be free of work completely. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Rod and Lynn have already sold their house | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
and are living in rented accommodation, | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
so they are keen to get cracking on the next chapter of their lives | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
and make the most of their healthy finances. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Our budget for the move is £500,000. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
Rod and Lynn want us | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
to concentrate our search to the very north of the county. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
They want to be close to family in Middlesbrough | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
and not too far from the coast. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Surrounded by breathtaking moorland, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
I met up with them to discover more about their ideal property. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
Well, Rod and Lynn, lovely to meet you. Welcome to North Yorkshire. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
-Thank you very much. -Thank you. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
So, remind us what you are looking for in this perfect home. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
Probably three to four bedrooms. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
A character house, I think, with a substantial garden. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
And I think Lynn and I would both like a big kitchen. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
And, obviously, amazing views and, ideally, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
not too far from the coast. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
-That would be perfect. -That would be perfect, wouldn't it? | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
And what about a budget? How much have we got to play with? | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
-I think £500,000. -Right. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
And that really would have to include the cost of any building work | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
or extensions. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
I think time is of the essence, isn't it? | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
We need to get you out of that rented accommodation | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
into your final home together, your dream property. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
-BOTH: Yes, please. -Come on, let's get going. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
Rod and Lynn have £500,000 to spend | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
and a clear idea of the house they want to buy. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
They'd like a minimum of three bedrooms, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
a large kitchen with enough space for a table, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
a big garden for Lynn to grow vegetables, | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
a garage and it needs to be on the edge of a village. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
We found | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
three superb houses to show them. However, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
I won't be revealing the price until they've had a guess first. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
The final choice is, as ever, the mystery house, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
a property they might not have considered on paper, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
but with the potential to be a real cliff-hanger. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
Our first offering is located close to Scalby Village. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
Situated on the edge of their search area, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
but with the North Yorkshire Moor's National Park | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
and coast right on their doorstep, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
it could just be what they are after. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Before I take them to the house, I am showing them the area. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
So, this is the village of Scalby. We are about ten minutes | 0:07:57 | 0:08:01
out of Scarborough. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:02
So, do you either of you know this area? | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
-BOTH: No. -Completely new to us. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:05
-Haven't done any house hunting around here? -Definitely not. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
-None at all. -That's very good. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:09
Well, this village has got a couple of shops, it has got two pubs, | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
hairdressers, a couple of churches. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
And the first house we're going to show you is literally just | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
a mile up the road. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Our first house is a stunning 17th-century barn | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
that was converted 20 years ago. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
So, here is your very first property in North Yorkshire. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
-It's a beautiful barn, isn't it? -It is. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
It has been extended and it is the Yorkshire sandstone, | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
you've got the pan tiles and a little outbuilding there, as well. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
-Location wise, we are about a mile from the village. -Yeah. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
-It is a spectacular setting. -Spectacular. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
Rod and Lynn seem very impressed with this beautiful barn conversion. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
Let's hope we can keep the mood flowing as we head inside. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
So, let's start off with the first sitting room. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
-Beautiful. -Lots of beams. -Lovely wall fire. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
And you've got your fire. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
Now, at the moment, it is not a log-burning fire, | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
but the flue is open. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
So, if you wanted to put a wood burner in there, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
a multi-fuel burner, very easy to do. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
-Beautiful light with the windows on both sides, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
-So, it's a good-sized room. -It's a beautiful sized room. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
It feels very cosy. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Let's continue. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
This house, with its exposed beams and open fireplace, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
has certainly brought a warm glow to their faces. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
Time to turn up the heat in the kitchen. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
-So, good-sized kitchen. -It is beautiful, isn't it? | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
Beautiful kitchen. Lovely range of cupboards. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
Lovely floor. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:51
Tiles, which have always been high on the list of things we want. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
-Indeed. -Practical for a kitchen in the country. -Very practical. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
You would ideally like a table in the kitchen, so there is that | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
little area there, which I think has been beautifully done. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
-That is perfectly sized. -So, you've got all the space downstairs. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
And if you turn round, there is the additional sitting room. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
This is another beautiful room. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
The wood panelling around the walls is really unusual. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
It is great how it flows into the kitchen. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
So, if you did have guests - I know you like your entertaining | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
and you want to bring plenty of friends and family here - | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
I think it works really well. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
It is also big enough to have a more formal dining table at the back. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
So, this property has two staircases leading upstairs. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
So, this leads us up to the master bedroom. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
-Lovely. -All right. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Also on this floor is a utility room, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
cloakroom and a light conservatory. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
But let's see where they might be sleeping. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
So, not only is the master bedroom here, | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
but it also has its very own sitting room. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
Sitting room number three. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
-Oh, God. -This is so unexpected. -Very bright. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
-Isn't it great? -It's beautiful! What a lovely room. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
-We could sit here all day, I think. -I think so. I am amazed. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
-I really didn't expect this. -It's a bonus, isn't it? -It is. -Absolutely. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
I really didn't expect to find this. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
And then it does lead straight into the master bedroom, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
with an en suite, as well. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:28
This is the modern part of the house. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
-This was the extension. -Yes. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:32
So, you do have your own bathroom. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
The three other bedrooms on this floor are all double rooms, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
one with its own en suite. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
There is also a contemporary family bathroom just along the landing. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
Outside, Lynn specifically asked for a large garden. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
This house comes with three quarters of an acre of land to enjoy | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
the views and a lovely secluded courtyard - | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
even in the rain. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
Well, it had stopped raining until I bring you to see the grounds | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
and the garden. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
Lovely place for barbecues and eating out. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
We'd need a sit-on lawnmower, I think, for the front garden. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
-Enough of a garden to play with? -Yes, I should think so. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
-Easily. -Easily, yeah. -No garage. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
But you do have a large outbuilding for storage. Made of the same stone. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
So, you've now have got to decide how much you think this house is | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
currently on the market for. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
I think probably about 465,000. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:29
-OK. -I would say slightly higher. I thought 475. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
-It is actually on the market for £450,000. -Oh, right. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:39
So, with that in mind, your brain is really worrying now, isn't it? | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
Absolutely, absolutely. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
-Good. Do want to have another look around? -Lovely. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
-BOTH: Yes, please. -Have a wander. Get out of the rain | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
and I'll catch up with you when you're ready. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
-Right. -Lovely. -See you in a minute. -BOTH: Thank you. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
On the market for £450,000, | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
house number one is well within budget. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
They would even have some cash left over to build a garage for Rod. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
All in all, it has a spacious kitchen, | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
a wonderful sitting room with open fire and beamed ceilings, | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
four double bedrooms, including a master with its own | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
sitting room and three quarters of an acre of land. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
I think my favourite thing about this house is this room | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
leading onto the kitchen. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:30
It has got a very homely, warm feel to it. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
I was particularly impressed with the ground floor arrangement, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
with the wooden floors and the tiles throughout. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
Upstairs, | 0:13:41 | 0:13:42
the master bedroom and the sitting room alongside that were really, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
really good. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:47
I am sorry about the weather, but it will stop raining soon, I promise. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
-I'm sure it will. -It will. Good start? -Very good start. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
Lovely. Lovely sized house, lovely accommodation inside, | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
the bedrooms were beautiful. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:00
Good, excellent. Right, off we go. Come on. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
Set below the cliffs of the North Yorkshire coastline, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
the fishing port of Whitby looks out over the wild waters | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
of the North Sea | 0:14:21 | 0:14:22
and provides a constant reminder of the town's rich maritime heritage. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:27
One of history's most noted explorers and navigators, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Captain James Cook, | 0:14:30 | 0:14:31
got his first taste of life on the ocean waves here. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
His first seamen's apprenticeship was in Whitby | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
and he lodged in the town whenever he was ashore. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
Our buyer Rod has a keen interest in Cook's voyages, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
while wife Lynn also loves history. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
So, earlier in the week, we sent them to the Captain Cook | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
Memorial Museum to meet its administrator, Peter Rowe. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
This is the house where Captain Cook lodged as an apprentice seaman. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
We'll take you inside and show you some | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
of our more interesting exhibits. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:00
So, if you'd like to follow me, we'll start straight away. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
Thank you. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:04
James Cook first lodged here in 1746, as the of apprentice | 0:15:04 | 0:15:08
to Captain John Walker, | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
whom he served for nine years. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
His favourite ship was the Resolution, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
which he used to explore the Pacific on his second and third voyages. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
So, this is a 1/48th model of the Resolution, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:23
which is the boat that Cook took with him on the second | 0:15:23 | 0:15:25
and third voyages. It is a fantastic model. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
It took about 4,000 man-hours to make. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
All the models here - you can see here the ship's provisions | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
and the ship's company were all on board that boat. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
This was the first ship to cross into both the Arctic | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
and the Antarctic circles. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
Cook was the first person to travel as far south. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
All the vessels that Cook sailed on during his adventures were | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
collier ships, built in Whitby, like this replica of the HMS Endeavour. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:55
Incredibly practical in design, they were broad beamed and had | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
a shallow draft, meaning the keel was not far below the waterline, | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
so they were unlikely to run aground. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
-Hello, welcome aboard. -Hello. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
HMS Endeavour was the first ship Cook captained | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
on his scientific voyage of discovery between 1768 and 1771. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:16
This model is only 40% of the ship's original size. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
But just like the real HMS Endeavour, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
it has been traditionally built by local craftsmen. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
This is a lot of responsibility. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
It is made of steamed large planks fastened to a solid oak frame, | 0:16:29 | 0:16:34
which is completed with masts and rigging. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
Well done. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:37
-You're doing fine. Have you done this before? -No. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
-You're doing very well. -Thank you. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Well, Rod and Lynn seem to be getting their sea legs at last, | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
but it's time we got back to our own endeavour | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
and explored some more properties. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
Our second house is in Guisborough, just 22 miles from Whitby, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
which is one of Rod and Lynn's favourite seaside locations. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
This is a historic market town dating back to the 13th century | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
Some theories, however, date the town back to the Roman occupation | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
of Britain, when it is believed it was a military fortification. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
Property two was built in the 17th century | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
and has truly magnificent views | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
of the surrounding meadows and woodland. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
So, for your second property, | 0:17:33 | 0:17:34
we have brought you to the very north of North Yorkshire. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
And here it is. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
-Beautiful. -It is, it is a beautiful house. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
I mean it looks, standing here, absolutely enormous. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
And being on this elevated position, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
it gets the most spectacular views | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
of the Cleveland Hills and all around. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
It's beautiful. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Well, believe it or not, this property was built in 1671. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
It is not listed. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:02
It was a gamekeeper's cottage, but looking at it, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
even from here, it is difficult to believe it is actually this old. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
-Absolutely. -It is, yes. -Well, shall we start the tour? | 0:18:08 | 0:18:12
BOTH: Yes, please. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:13
Great first reactions. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
It seems this former gamekeeper's cottage has caught | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
Rod and Lynn's imagination. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
So, a good hallway, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
but it leads into... well, I would say, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
a double drawing room, in a way. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
-I love the windows. -Practically brand-new sash windows there, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
which, I'm sure you are aware, would save you a fortune | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
if you had to replace them. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:39
-That is a good sign. -Spectacular. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
I like it. I like it a lot. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
It is a very welcoming house. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
-Beautiful. -The whole room is. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
-Yeah? -It's a very calm, warm room, isn't it? | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
Well, I am delighted you love the very first room we've shown you. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
Let's hope it continues. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
A very important room, I feel - the kitchen. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:07
Well, it's a kitchen diner. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
This is lovely. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
-It is. -Really lovely. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
-And there is your wood burner. -This is a magnificent room. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:19
-It is. -And you've got so much storage space. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
On top of all that storage space, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
next door, there is a cloakroom with a downstairs shower. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
-And through that is actually a utility room, as well. -Oh. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
It has been finished to such a high standard. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
Someone else has spotted something else. Haven't you? | 0:19:36 | 0:19:38
-The conservatory. -Shall we take a look? | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
BOTH: Yes, please. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
-So, your sunroom. -Ideal. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
-Every part of this house is almost for the views, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:54
And you can get a view of a little bit of your garden there, | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
which we will explore a little bit later on. | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
-But it gives you an idea. -I could spend many a happy hour sitting here. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
-I'm getting sighs of contentment, aren't I? -Absolutely. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:07
You can see the quality of the workmanship in this house. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
It's lovely. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:12
-It is almost like a feeling of homecoming, isn't it? -It is. -Great. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
-I just want to sit and look at it. -Aaaah! | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
Well, I will give you time to explore on your own a little bit | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
-later, because next I want to take you upstairs. -Right. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
-Lovely. -Let's check out the bedrooms. -Lovely. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
Our buyers are getting genuinely excited about this property. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
It appears they are already picturing themselves living here. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
On the first floor, there are two double bedrooms, one single | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
and a family bathroom. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
This is the master. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
This doesn't have the en suite that you are hoping for. However, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
what it does have is a corridor leading through | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
to an enormous amount of cupboards. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
I like it. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
-Shall we head downstairs? -Yes, perfect. -Right. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
This beautiful sandstone cottage is in a lovely location | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
and has an elevated position, | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
offering magnificent views from every part of the house. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
There is plenty of space for Lynn to grow her vegetables | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
and there is also an added bonus for Rod. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
So, the good news is, with this house, | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
you do have a garage, as well as what looks like an extended barn. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:22
-This is great. -It is just lovely. -It is. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
Two cars, with ease, and lots of gardening equipment. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:30
Time to inspect where Lynn could be cultivating her cucumbers. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:34
So, last but not least, the garden. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
Now, in total, it's 1.3 acres. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
Amazing, it really is. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
Idyllic home in an idyllic place. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
I'm just absolutely in love with it, I think. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:52
It's beautiful. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
Ooh! It's crunch time. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
-What is the current asking price? -I think it is well over our budget. | 0:21:56 | 0:22:01
I think it's...550,000. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
I think it's probably 560,000. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
If I said it was under your budget...? | 0:22:10 | 0:22:14
-Really? -I'd be amazed. -I would be shocked and stunned. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
£475,000 is the asking price for this beautiful house. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:25
That's very good. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:26
-That's...very, very good. -That's better than good. -Yes. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
I'm shivering down my back and it's not because it's cold. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
-I'm shocked. -Shocked. Shocked and stunned. -Oh, that's good! | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
No, it is. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:37
Who wants to go and have another look around? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
-Me, please. -Me, please, as well. -Go, please do. Enjoy! -Thank you. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:45
-See you in a while. -Right. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:46
How amazing was that? I'm so excited! Well, I can squeal, | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
but they were very contained, weren't they? | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
But I could see it in their faces, they're absolutely delighted. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:59
On the market at £475,000, this 17th-century cottage is well | 0:23:01 | 0:23:06
under their budget and is a welcome surprise for Rod and Lynn. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
It has a beautiful sitting room and dining room, a large kitchen | 0:23:10 | 0:23:15
with its own fireplace and wood burner, a conservatory, | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
three double bedrooms, including a master with its own dressing room, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:22
1.3 acres of land and a large garage. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:27
Everything about this house is so beautifully maintained. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
I felt very comfortable in there. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
And every room afterwards made me smile. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
It just feels absolutely right for us. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
The outside was beautiful. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
Lovely windows, lovely stonework. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
And then we came into the kitchen, which is absolutely magnificent. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:50
I think it would suit us down to the ground. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
-All right, you two. -Yes. -Have you seen enough? | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
-Yes, thank you. -We have, yes, thank you. -Good. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
I don't want to tear you away, | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
but I'm afraid I'm going to have to now. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:03
Come on, that's it for today. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
As the sun sets over the North Yorkshire Moors, | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
our buyers take time to sit back and savour their first day | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
of house hunting. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:21
Retired doctor Rod and his wife, Lynn, who is a nurse, | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
are searching for a new lease of life in North Yorkshire. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:35
So far, there has been a warm welcome to property one, | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
with its fabulous master bedroom and attached sitting room. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
But they instantly fell in love with our second property, | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
the 17th-century gamekeeper's cottage, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:47
perhaps due to its fantastic views. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:50
However, will the mystery house tip them over a watery edge? | 0:24:50 | 0:24:54
Fancy being lord and lady of the manor? | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
Yeah, I'd probably have to be a worker, I think, | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
rather than the lord. | 0:24:58 | 0:24:59
And I put a bit of a shine on a jewel of North Yorkshire. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
You can see the black coming through straightaway. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
Our mission in North Yorkshire is to find Rod and Lynn | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
their forever home. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:15
Today, it's time to show them our third and final property, | 0:25:15 | 0:25:19
so let's see if the mystery house can work its magic. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:22
So, yesterday was a pretty exciting day, wasn't it? | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
Did you sleep last night or were you thinking of that second property? | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
I think I spent a lot of time thinking about the second property, | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
-but... -I slept better, | 0:25:34 | 0:25:35
but still thought a lot about the second property. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
So, our mystery house has got quite a lot of work to do, | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
hasn't it? Let's be honest, now, to beat that. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
So, what are you dreading that we might be taking you to see? | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
Anything thinking, "I hope it's not a..." | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
I hope it's not semi-detached. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:51
Well, wait and see. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:53
OK, well, we are nearly there, so you won't have to wait for too long. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
For our mystery property, we have travelled near to Runswick Bay, | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
a picturesque seaside location 30 miles south of Middlesbrough, | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
where they have family. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:06
With its sweeping sheltered cove and charming red roof cottages, | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
Runswick Bay is one of the Yorkshire coast's | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
prettiest destinations. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
Among the unique attractions is this ancient thatched | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
Coast Guard's cottage. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:18
The mystery house is a Grade 2 listed home | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
in the most stunning setting. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
They've said they want to be near the coast, | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
but how about living on it? | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
So, here we have our third and final property, the mystery house. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:35
-Look at this. -It's on a cliff, nearly. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
Yeah. Spectacular views, I mean, just look at that behind us. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
-Quite amazing. -Stunning to look at, isn't it? | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
Yes, it's like something out of a novel | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
-or a television series, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
You might notice there's a building to the side which is | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
attached. That's a separate house. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:54
-Oh, I see. So, it's just this bit -Yes, the three... | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
Just as you see in front of you. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
-It is beautiful. -Made from local stone. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
And it does have, you know, the most amazing views. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
You can't forget those on your doorstep, can you? | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
You couldn't, no. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:10
-So, should we start, step inside? -Both: Yes, please. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
-All right, follow me. -Thank you. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
Rod and Lynn clearly love the idea of waking every morning | 0:27:16 | 0:27:20
to these spectacular views, | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
but they are not giving much away about what they think | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
of the house. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:26
So, this mystery house has a very impressive hallway. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
You've got the original door dating back to 1750. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
And I wanted to start off with the first drawing room. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
It is really impressive. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
-I'm speechless. -Beautiful bay window. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
It is lovely to see that they've kept the original features. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
And the views will be spectacular in summer and winter. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
I'd like a chair and a good book in that window. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
Good! Well, that is a jolly good start. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
Right, let's go next door. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
Well, they seem truly enchanted with this home | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
and I think there is much more pleasure to come. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
So, across the hall and you've got another very large reception room. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:08
This time, they are using it as their dining room. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
-This is... -Another lovely, lovely room. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:14
-With a door in the back. -Yes, access to your front garden. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:19
The views from here are... | 0:28:19 | 0:28:21
It's just built, isn't it, to enjoy those views. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
-Yeah. -Beautiful. -I like it. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:29
It's...quite breathtaking. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
It still looks like something out of a television series inside, | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
doesn't it? | 0:28:35 | 0:28:36
You don't fancy being lord and lady of the manor? | 0:28:36 | 0:28:38
Lynn might be the lady. I'd probably have to be a worker, | 0:28:38 | 0:28:42
I think, rather than the lord. I'd be her servant. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
Well, if you are going to be the servant, perhaps I should show you | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
where the kitchen is, because that is where all the hard work starts. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:51
-Yes, please. -Lovely. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:52
Rod can hold off getting his hands dirty just yet, | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
as we survey our next treat. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
So, here is your kitchen. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:00
-Complete with a range. -A range cooker! | 0:29:00 | 0:29:04
-Beautiful. Lovely colour. -And these are the original cupboards, | 0:29:04 | 0:29:08
-believe it or not. -Is it panelling or cupboards? -All panelling. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:12
You have some cupboards either side. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:14
Another beautiful, bright window. That window is lovely. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:18
Overlooking the garden. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:21
Also on this floor is a huge utility area and cloak room. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
But we are heading upstairs, bypassing this beautiful bay window. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:29
There are four bedrooms in total up here, | 0:29:29 | 0:29:32
including two double guest rooms and a single. | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
There is also a fantastic wooden floored bathroom | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
with a roll-top bath. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
Now for the room that could be theirs. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
Here is just one of the four bedrooms that we have. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
-Wonderful views. -Yes, amazing views. -It is a good size. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:48
Yes, all three of the doubles are a really good size. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
And again, they have all got the huge windows. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:55
As we move outside, we will get a sense of the surrounding land | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
that amounts to about 13 acres. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
At the front of the property, there is a walled garden joining onto | 0:30:01 | 0:30:04
a sizable lawn, which extends right round to the back of the house. | 0:30:04 | 0:30:08
Here, there are a number of outbuildings, | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
including a stable block and a large barn. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
A lot of these buildings have actually had planning | 0:30:16 | 0:30:19
permission granted to make them into holiday lets, convert them. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
That has expired, that commission, so | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
if you were interested, potentially, in running this as a side business, | 0:30:25 | 0:30:29
you would need to apply for permission again, | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
but there are plans, | 0:30:31 | 0:30:32
they've already been drawn up how they'd all be converted. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:36
-That would be a big decision. -Yes. -Because really, we are retiring. -Yep. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:41
Well, it is something to think about. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
Rod and Lynn seem a little unnerved by the size | 0:30:43 | 0:30:46
and scale of this property, especially with the outbuildings. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
However, the owners are willing to consider selling the house | 0:30:50 | 0:30:53
without them if necessary. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:54
So, if our buyers just want the house and gardens, | 0:30:54 | 0:30:57
then this could be the place for them. | 0:30:57 | 0:30:59
This is the toughest bit. How much is it all worth? | 0:30:59 | 0:31:04
Definitely blown the budget on this one. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:07
-Who wants to go first? It's the final time. -You go. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:10
Well, I would say... | 0:31:10 | 0:31:12
-610,000. -OK. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
I was going to go just under 600, so 595. | 0:31:17 | 0:31:22
Total price for absolutely everything we have shown you... | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
-..£545,000. -Really? -545? -Yep. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:33
That is everything. So, it's a double guess the price. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:37
How much for the house on its own with the front | 0:31:37 | 0:31:40
and the rear garden up to the stable block? | 0:31:40 | 0:31:43
475? | 0:31:45 | 0:31:47 | |
465. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:50 | |
-375. -375? | 0:31:50 | 0:31:53
If you just wanted to buy the house on its own, with the gardens, | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
£375,000. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:59
Because then you could negotiate if you wanted the stable block, | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02
about £125,000, including the land around it. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:06
Or if you wanted just to buy the fields, | 0:32:06 | 0:32:09
she is happy to sell that off separately, as well. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:11
-Well! -Gosh, food for thought. -It certainly is. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:15
-I feel a cup of tea and a think might be in order. -Have a wander. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
Do have a think, cos there are so many options | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
with this splendid property. | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
-Absolutely. -And I will catch up with you when you're ready. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:25
-All right. -Off you go. -Thank you very much. -Thank you. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
Well, I thought yesterday it was all done and dusted, | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
but the mystery house has now really confused them. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
There are just so many fantastic options with this home. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:40
Altogether, this property with outbuildings | 0:32:40 | 0:32:44
and fields is on the market for £545,000. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
However, if Rod and Lynn just want the house and gardens, | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
then the price would fall to just 375,000, well under their budget. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:57
It has a beautiful sitting room with bay windows looking out to the sea, | 0:32:57 | 0:33:01
a huge kitchen, four bedrooms, almost 13 acres of land | 0:33:01 | 0:33:07
and a large range of farm buildings that could be converted | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
into holiday lets. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
The mystery property... Hasn't it thrown a spanner in the works? | 0:33:12 | 0:33:16
The thing I like about it so much are the windows, | 0:33:16 | 0:33:20
the exceptional views, the proportions of the rooms. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:24
I think what I least like about it are all the choices. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
The mystery property really is like a Georgian grand house. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:32
It is the sort of house that I couldn't believe | 0:33:32 | 0:33:36
we would be thinking of buying. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:38
So, I think the outbuildings and turning those into something | 0:33:38 | 0:33:43
that we would use would probably be a step too far. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:47
Oh, you look like the owners already. Have you seen enough? | 0:33:50 | 0:33:55
-Yes, thank you. -I think we have, yes. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:57
-Have I confused you now? -You have. -Good! -Very confused. | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
I think you need some time, don't you, | 0:34:00 | 0:34:02
to think about all three properties and then we'll have a chat. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
-Right. -Come on, then. -Thank you. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
The historic fishing town of Whitby is well-known for its jet, | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
a hard black mineral found in its cliffs. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
Jet is created from the fossilized remains of the monkey puzzle tree | 0:34:29 | 0:34:33
from the Jurassic period | 0:34:33 | 0:34:34
and can only be uncovered on a 7.5 mile stretch | 0:34:34 | 0:34:37
of this North Yorkshire coastline. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:39
Jet was undoubtedly one of the earliest gemstones used to | 0:34:41 | 0:34:44
create artefacts and jewellery | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
and became particularly fashionable during the Victorian era. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:50
Earlier in the week, I met up with Hal Redvers-Jones, | 0:34:50 | 0:34:54
a local jeweller and expert on this rare gem. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:57
Hal, you have a jewellery business here in Whitby, | 0:34:57 | 0:35:00
working exclusively with jet. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:02
But what exactly is jet itself? Is it a stone? | 0:35:02 | 0:35:06
It is classified as a gemstone, yes, but it is actually a fossil, | 0:35:06 | 0:35:10
a fossil of the Araucaria araucana, | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
commonly known as the monkey puzzle tree. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:15
And what happens to it? How does it become... | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
go from a monkey puzzle tree to this very hard sort of semi-precious | 0:35:17 | 0:35:21
stone that we know? | 0:35:21 | 0:35:23
180 million years ago, the tree was washed off the land, | 0:35:23 | 0:35:27
into a warm and shallow sea and became embedded | 0:35:27 | 0:35:30
in a thick sedimentary layer, | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
and that stopped the oxygen getting to it | 0:35:33 | 0:35:35
and it didn't decompose. So, we got this fossil. | 0:35:35 | 0:35:39
And you can see here, on this piece, the rings of the tree. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:44
-It's so shiny already. -Yeah. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:46
So, can you find jet anywhere else in the UK or is it | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
just in this Whitby area? | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
Well, you can't find it in the UK, no. It is geographically | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
and geologically exclusive to that 7.5 miles. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:58
But you can find poor quality jet elsewhere in the world. | 0:35:58 | 0:36:01
In the early 19th century, jet was worn by women in mourning, | 0:36:01 | 0:36:05
most notably by Queen Victoria. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:07
At that time, Whitby was doing a roaring trade in such jewellery | 0:36:07 | 0:36:12
and one of the last remaining workshops from this period | 0:36:12 | 0:36:14
still survives today. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:16
-My goodness. -This is it, this is what I wanted to show you - | 0:36:19 | 0:36:23
-an 1867 original workshop. -It is amazing! | 0:36:23 | 0:36:28
This is exactly how it would have been. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:31
Craftsmen would have stood in front of these, treadling the wheels, | 0:36:31 | 0:36:35
and these wheels would rotate. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
And the craftsmen would then hold the jet up against this. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
When jet became fashionable, | 0:36:41 | 0:36:43
the economy of Whitby must have exploded then, | 0:36:43 | 0:36:45
as this is the only place to get it. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:46
There was a meteoric rise. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:48
Then there would have been 200 of these workshops. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:51
What an economic force it was for the town. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:54
And looking at the equipment all around that the carvers used, | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
has it changed much today? | 0:36:57 | 0:36:58
The major difference is power. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:01
I have electricity, which miniaturizes the whole process, | 0:37:01 | 0:37:05
whereas these chaps would have had to treadle the wheels | 0:37:05 | 0:37:09
and the jet pieces went round the workshop, | 0:37:09 | 0:37:12
giving it to the next craftsman, | 0:37:12 | 0:37:14
who would have done a different aspect of the craft. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:18
So, it literally... | 0:37:18 | 0:37:19
-There'd have been a different carver at each station. -Yeah. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:22
Now, what I do is I have to do each one of these stages myself. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:26
-Fancy having an apprentice for the day? -Yes. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
Seven-year apprenticeship, | 0:37:29 | 0:37:30
we can condense that into a couple of minutes. | 0:37:30 | 0:37:33
-Let's see how I get on. -Yeah. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:34
-So, here is your workshop. -Yeah, this is the master carver's bench. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
-Yeah. -You can take a seat here. -Thank you. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
It is a little bit smaller than next door, isn't it? | 0:37:46 | 0:37:49
-Yes. Just hold that in your right hand. You are right-handed? -Yep. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:53
This is professional carving equipment. | 0:37:53 | 0:37:57
Yesterday, I started to carve this large contemporary ring. | 0:37:57 | 0:38:03
This has got a finely ground diamond compound in it, so what | 0:38:03 | 0:38:07
you are going to do is to start the first process of the polishing, | 0:38:07 | 0:38:12
taking that in your left hand and then using this tiny little brush | 0:38:12 | 0:38:17
here, brushing all of that paste into the detailed sections of that. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:22
Just moving it into the details of the cuts there. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:27
You can see the black coming through straightaway. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:31
Now, there will be two or three more stages of polish before it | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
reaches that really beautiful shine. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:38
I am really absorbed doing this. A final bit of buffing. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:42
-So, master jeweller, how is my handiwork? -It is very good, yes. | 0:38:42 | 0:38:48
Fit to grace somebody's long, slender finger. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
And the even better news is it will be around for centuries | 0:38:51 | 0:38:53
-and centuries. -Yes, it will. | 0:38:53 | 0:38:55
Absolutely. The antique of the future. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:58
-Hal, thank you very much indeed. -You are more than welcome. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:01
So, don't forget, if you come here on holiday, keep your eyes | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
peeled. You may find your own piece of Whitby jet on the beach. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:13
So, that's it, our house search here in North Yorkshire is over | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
and it has certainly been an exciting one. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
I can't wait to hear what Rod and Lynn have got to say. | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
So, here we are on a beautiful day | 0:39:25 | 0:39:27
with the most amazing views behind us. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
Is this where you both want to settle? | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
-You haven't changed your minds after our search? -Definitely not. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
Who could not want to live here? | 0:39:35 | 0:39:36
I know, it's absolutely beautiful, isn't it? | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
The big question is, | 0:39:38 | 0:39:40
have we got close to finding you your perfect property? | 0:39:40 | 0:39:44
Should we start off with the very first property that we saw? | 0:39:44 | 0:39:47
In a little village outside of Scarborough, actually, Scalby. | 0:39:47 | 0:39:50
Tell me what you thought. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
It was a beautiful house in a beautiful place. I just felt, | 0:39:53 | 0:39:57
really, it was too far away from our original destination. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
We really wanted to be within striking distance of the family, | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
didn't we? | 0:40:04 | 0:40:05
Because the family are all situated around Middlesbrough area, | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
-aren't they? -Yes, really at the very north of North Yorkshire. | 0:40:08 | 0:40:12
That was the first property we showed you. Then we moved on | 0:40:12 | 0:40:15
to Guisborough, which was much closer | 0:40:15 | 0:40:16
-to where your family actually live. -Yes. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:19
And, well, the second house, | 0:40:19 | 0:40:22
-it did get quite a reaction, didn't it? -Yes, it did. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
The second house looked good from the outside and the workmanship, | 0:40:24 | 0:40:29
the care that had gone into putting windows, floors and everything in | 0:40:29 | 0:40:33
was just really, really, really good. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:36
You wouldn't have to do anything inside the house, I don't think. | 0:40:36 | 0:40:39
No, that's very true. And what about you, Lynn? | 0:40:39 | 0:40:42
What did you think? | 0:40:42 | 0:40:43
I loved it yesterday and I think I do still love it today. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:47
The feeling of walking into that house was | 0:40:47 | 0:40:49
just like the feeling of coming home. | 0:40:49 | 0:40:51
There was scope to extend into the garage area, | 0:40:51 | 0:40:56
and that is the sort of work that we would like to do. | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
I just want to ask, because you both said straightaway, | 0:40:59 | 0:41:02
"What an amazing house, it has got the right feel for us." | 0:41:02 | 0:41:06
-Did that continue throughout? -Absolutely, I think it did. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
Yes, it did. | 0:41:09 | 0:41:10
It was difficult to believe that it was a house with only two rooms, | 0:41:10 | 0:41:15
essentially, downstairs, because it felt much bigger than that. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
-Yes, it did feel big. -Quite deceiving in that respect. | 0:41:18 | 0:41:22
So, the last property we showed you, leaving on a high from that, | 0:41:22 | 0:41:26
was something very, very different - our mystery house. | 0:41:26 | 0:41:29
So much potential if you choose to take it on. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:33
When we first looked at the house, | 0:41:33 | 0:41:35
you could see it's a very grand, very beautiful, big house. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:39
But when we went in through the front door, | 0:41:39 | 0:41:43
it needs lots of time and attention inside. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:48
And because it was the third house and because it was mystery house, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:51
I was thinking the whole time, | 0:41:51 | 0:41:53
"This is going to blow our budget. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:54
"Will we have enough money to do what we would want to do to it | 0:41:54 | 0:41:59
"to make it a house that we will be comfortable in to live in?" | 0:41:59 | 0:42:02
There was quite a lot of work that we would want to do inside | 0:42:02 | 0:42:06
and not very much work to do in the garden outside. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
So, although the house itself looked grand | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
and I think, really, was top of the list for appearances | 0:42:13 | 0:42:16
from the outside, | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
there wasn't much work to do in the immediate garden. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:22
I suppose I have to ask you, then, what is going to be the next move? | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
I think we would probably like to go back | 0:42:26 | 0:42:27
and have a look at the second house. | 0:42:27 | 0:42:30
Do you think, potentially, that could be the house for you? | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
-I think, potentially, it could. -Yes. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:35
Well, best of luck when you go and look at the second property again. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
I hope all your questions get answered. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:40
Listen, thank you both very much. Let us know how you get on. | 0:42:40 | 0:42:43
And certainly, if you put an offer in, | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
I want to be the first to know. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:47
Of course. And thank you very much for showing us | 0:42:47 | 0:42:50
what we know is a beautiful county. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:52
One thing is for sure, both Rod | 0:42:57 | 0:42:59
and Lynn now know exactly where in this county they want to live | 0:42:59 | 0:43:03
and that their budget will get them what they are looking for. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:06
Or as the mystery house demonstrated, | 0:43:06 | 0:43:08
potentially a lot more. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:11
Until next time, bye-bye. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:13
Well, Rod and Lynn did go back to see house number two | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
near Guisborough. | 0:43:17 | 0:43:18
Even though they loved it, they had second thoughts about the location. | 0:43:18 | 0:43:23
