In the 18th century, these abbey ruins were saved | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
and became the ornamental centrepiece of a massive landscaping exercise. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:08
Find out which county this historic oasis is in | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
in just a few moments. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
It's the call of home that's luring today's buyers | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
out into the country, and we've got some stunning properties | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
up for grabs with bags of potential. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
-It is a really cute house, isn't it? -It's got a lot going for it. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
But one place in particular could see them really going to town. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
You could do a workshop upstairs, if you wanted. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
-Or even a master bedroom with an en-suite. -Steady! | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
I'm in North Yorkshire at the Studley Royal Water Gardens, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
which provides an elegant setting for the ruins of Fountains Abbey. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
Back in the 13th century, this was the wealthiest | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
and largest Cistercian abbey in England. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
However, it clearly hit hard times | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1539. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
230 years later, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
wealthy estate owner William Aislabie bought the abbey site | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
and carved out this fantastic vista | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
in what was a wild and wooded valley. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
It is still a stunning example of English landscaping at its finest. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
As the largest rural county in the country, North Yorkshire | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
covers a massive 3,000 square miles of breathtaking English scenery. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:45
To the southern Dales is the dramatic limestone cliff of Malham Cove | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
that was cut by a waterfall after the Ice Age, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
rising up to 260 feet high. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
East Yorkshire's terrain of stunning peaks and lush valleys | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
provides the perfect stomping ground for sheep to thrive | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
and also became one of the principal backdrops of the Industrial Revolution, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
powered by the county's abundant supply of water. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
The market town of Richmond was rebuilt in Georgian splendour | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
on the prosperity of the woollen trade | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
and retains Britain's oldest surviving Georgian playhouse. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
Away from the picturesque towns and villages, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
this is the place of wide-open countryside, where the horizon | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
stretches out to meet equally vast skies. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
Around 40% of the land is covered by national parks | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
with almost all the moors and dales lying within the county borders. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
And it's this wild natural beauty that continues to attract | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
artists, writers and artisans who find the sweeping fells | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
and moorland a constant source of inspiration. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
The average price of a detached property in North Yorkshire | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
is just over £260,000. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
That is roughly in line with the national figure. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
However, be aware that around Harrogate you could pay a 10% premium | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
for the good schools, transport links | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
and access to the glorious countryside like the Dales. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
Now, in the Dales themselves, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
characterful properties and historic market towns like Hawes and Settle, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
well, they are holding their value. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
Whereas your money will go further if you look around Skipton and Hellifield. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
So let's find out what part of this beautiful county | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
has so captured today's buyers. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
Husband and wife, James and Catherine, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
tied the knot 24 years ago | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
and for 15 years they have lived in a three-bedroom terraced cottage | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
within a busy village on the outskirts of Stockport in Cheshire. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
But with retirement on the cards, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
they fancy making their holiday way of living an everyday reality. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:56
Over the last few years, | 0:03:58 | 0:03:59
we've started going to more remote holiday places and one of the things | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
that was really marvellous was the fact it was really dark at night. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
So there was a bit of space around and there were no streetlights | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
and no cars going past and there was something a bit magic about that. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
There's a fair amount of traffic from the A6, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
which is a major trunk road at the bottom of the hill. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
Parking is an issue. We don't have a garage or a run-in. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
Therefore, we are looking for something that would meet those needs and at the same time | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
accommodate Catherine's requirement to move back to Yorkshire. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
I was born in Yorkshire. I'm from Leeds originally. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
Although, I have not lived there for a long time, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
I've still got a real soft spot for the undulating | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
countryside around Yorkshire. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
Having been in lots of different places around the UK, I still come | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
back to the fact that Yorkshire is the most beautiful county. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
It is. And it would be nice to have a small piece of that. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
So it's back to roots where they both hope for a fine | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
and fitting property. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
Looking for a traditional Yorkshire style house or building, whatever you want to call it. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
I can see how people love big, grand barns, but I don't want posh. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
I just want cosy. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
With home comforts sorted, Cathy has grand plans for the home turf. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
My ideal garden going forward would be somewhere with | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
space for a greenhouse so that I can start seeds off earlier. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
Space for a vegetable patch. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
Just a little space for sitting out | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
but some places to do some decent-sized flowerbeds. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
This garden has always been slightly constricted | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
by James' need for the man shed. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
So when we first came here, we built it together, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
so it was a nice project to do and I enjoyed building the shed, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
but that is really on the space where my greenhouse should be. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
They have spent a lot of time renovating | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
and remodelling their current home. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
But now James is retired from a career in retail and food buying, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
he's relishing the chance to get stuck into some more DIY projects. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:12
And since Cathy has reduced her work hours, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
she is putting crafting high on the agenda. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
I've worked full-time all my life. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
Suddenly, I've got an opportunity to start to do some of these hobbies again. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:27
I've got Lily, the gorgeous new granddaughter, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
who is also an excuse to do crochet blankets | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
so she can roll around on the floor and toys and things like that. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
So it would be nice to have a space where you could work, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
come out, close the door and then go back in and pick up the work | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
when you are ready to do it again. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
All that remains is to find out how much money | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
Cathy and James have earmarked for their future Yorkshire home. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
The budget for the move is £400,000. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
We'll be searching for Cathy and James' | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
dream Yorkshire property in and around the picturesque villages | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
within the Yorkshire Dales, which is exactly where we are all | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
meeting up to find out more about their move back to the motherland. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
James and Cathy, welcome to glorious North Yorkshire. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
Tell me, why do you want to move to this part of the world? | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
We are looking for somewhere away from towns and people, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
a little bit more isolated than where we are at the moment. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
And we want a little more room, both in the garden and within the house. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:31
Lovely. And Cathy, you are a Yorkshire lass, aren't you? | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
-Originally, yes. -Originally from Leeds. So how well do you know this part of Yorkshire? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
-This particular area is all new to me. -Is it? -Yes. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
So what are we looking for with this new property? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
We are looking for decent-sized rooms rather than numbers of rooms. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
What about bedrooms? Any numbers in mind for them? | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
Three would be nice, but we could manage with two if they are doubles. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
But these houses that have four or five bedrooms to give you the space | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
downstairs aren't really what we're looking for. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
What about a project? Are you prepared to do a little bit of work on this new dream property? | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
-Yes. -Happy to do work, yes. -Do you both do work? -Yes. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
I am the sort of enthusiastic apprentice. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
So I am the one who hands across the hammers and holds the ladders | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
and things that, but I quite like that. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
-Good team, then. -We try to be. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
Talking of teamwork, who is going to make the final decision with this next property, do we think? | 0:08:22 | 0:08:27
It won't be me! | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
-He is quite clear on that, isn't he, Cathy? -He is. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
-But he knows I will make the right decision. -Look at that. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
That has to be the perfect answer. The perfect answer. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
Well, we have got three splendid properties lined up to show you, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
-so shall we get started? -Yes. -That would be great. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
For a budget of £400,000, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
Cathy and James are after a traditional stone built Yorkshire property | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
away from neighbours that has two to three double bedrooms, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
space for Cathy's craft hobbies, and the potential for a large | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
kitchen diner, as they are willing to do some renovations. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
Outside, the crucial garden should ideally have outbuildings to cater | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
for James' DIY tools and workshop, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
as well as a greenhouse for Cathy. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
We'll be cruising to some wonderful country homes | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
but until our buyers have had a guess first, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
I'll be keeping my lips sealed as to the prices. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
And finally, we'll be going off the beaten track | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
for an exceptional getaway in the form of our mystery house. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
We are starting our property quest in Wigglesworth, | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
a small village at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales that lies | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
in the Ribble Valley, a few miles east of the market town of Settle. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
Most essential and luxury goods can be picked up in Settle | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
but residents in the rural community of Wigglesworth | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
do benefit from a well-regarded gastropub which also offers a post office service twice a week | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
and lies right opposite house number one. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
I've brought you to, I think, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
one of the best sounding village names ever, Wigglesworth, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
to show you our very first property. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Wow! | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16 | |
-It looks like it's well worth a look. -Good. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
What do you think, James? First impressions? | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
First impressions are that it's a quite nice, substantial house. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
It's 18th century, Grade II listed, but gentrified in the 19th century. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
It was a farmhouse. It's not all yours. It is semi-detached. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
-Let's go through and see what you think of the house itself to start off with. -Thank you. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
As requested, this historic farmhouse is built of local stone | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
and the layout could also have the potential | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
James and Cathy were after too. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
There are two large reception rooms at the front of the property, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
one a more formal sitting room | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
and the other designated as the dining room, | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
which is where we are starting our tour. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
So here is your first property. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
-Wow. -Mmm. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:05
-It's a nice big room, isn't it? -So, this was the old farmhouse. -Right. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
So, this is the oldest bit. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
I think if this were our home, this would probably be the snug. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
You know, you'd have big sofas and things in here | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
-and not use it as a dining area. -You will see there's a staircase there. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:25
This house has two staircases. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
The reason being, the previous owners were going to divide it up into two cottages. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
The current owners saw it, fell in love, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
thought, "Couldn't possibly do that" and wanted it as one home. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
But there are two staircases. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
So I'm telling you that now because you could remove it | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
-and make this one big room. Just a thought. -Interesting. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
-So a good start? -Yes. It's cute. -Do you like it? -It's cute. -So far. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
I'll take you through now to the kitchen. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
-At the moment it has a country style to it. -It certainly does. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
-It is as small as I could go for a kitchen, I think. -Is it? -Yes. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:10
To me, the pine isn't as attractive. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
I think that's been overdone in the past. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
-For someone who likes a project... -It's a challenge. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
-Just look at that old door. -It's beautiful. -The original back door. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:24
We'll find out what's beyond the back door later on | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
and continue exploring inside. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
Right opposite the kitchen/ breakfast room is a spacious utility | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
and the original staircase that takes us upstairs. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
To the front, the smallest bedroom is being used as a study | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
and at the back not one, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
but two family bathrooms serve a further four bedrooms. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:47
One has a single bed, but could make a cosy double. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
The other three are all good-sized double rooms, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
including the one we've picked out for Cathy and James. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
I am going to call this the master bedroom. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
-Big, small, how do you feel? -It's all right. -It's a nice size. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
-It's a good shape. -How do you feel about the house in general? | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
Is it grabbing you? I'm not sure. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
It's got some really cute little things about it. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
-It is a really cute house, isn't it? -It's got a lot going for it. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
Both our buyers should be thrilled to find out that this cottage | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
has even more going for it outside, as that substantial door | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
we saw earlier opens onto an extensive south-facing garden. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
Backing on to open farmland with views over the countryside, | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
the grounds are made up of level lawns with formal borders | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
and shrubs completed by a large pond. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
What's more, there is a range of outbuildings | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
already being used as workshops. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
-Are you surprised about all this behind the property? -Yes. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
-It is very positive. I love the garden. -Do you? -Yes. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
There is so much potential. It's beautiful. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
Who wants to go first with guessing the price of this property? | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
-I think I will. -Go on, James. -I'm not quite sure, | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-but I would have thought somewhere around 385, given our budget. -OK. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
I think it's probably going to be more like 395. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:17
OK. The asking price is... | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
..under that. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
-£375,000. -Interesting. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
That makes it very interesting. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
Has that slightly changed your view on the property? | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
It does because there are one or two things that need doing | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
and I would think that would be quite a sweetener, to be honest. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
Have a wander around the house again. Do take a good look with that price in mind. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
-And let me know when you're ready to go. -OK, we will do that. -Enjoy. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
Thank you very much. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:44
A pleasant surprise to kick off. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
On the market under budget for £375,000. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:54
The first property presents a generous semidetached stone cottage | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
with two reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
and four double bedrooms. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
But let's not forget the large garden that has | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
plenty of scope for Cathy | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
and outbuildings aplenty for James. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
The kitchen needs some work to really be what we would want | 0:15:12 | 0:15:17
but it had lots of potential. The bedrooms were all good sizes. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
Four double bedrooms and two bathrooms. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
It really made it an attractive proposition. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
The aspect out into the garden is fantastic. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
I was really impressed with the space inside the house | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
because it had more bedrooms than I expected it to have. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
It had two really roomy sitting rooms. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
You can't help but love things like those stone lintels and the | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
stone fireplaces and the beautiful door that leads out into the garden. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
The garden is to die for. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
Even before you notice the outbuildings | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
and the little stable and all the little nooks and crannies, | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
you just think it is so peaceful and so beautiful. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
Right, you two. How are you both feeling? | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
-I'm feeling very optimistic. -That's good. -It's really interesting. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
But if you are saving the best until last, | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
you've really set a standard to beat. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
You'll have to wait and see on that one. Right, let's go. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
During the industrial heyday of the late 18th and 19th centuries, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
the provincial landscape of North Yorkshire | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
was transformed into a manufacturing hotbed | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
with a multitude of mills towering above the skyline. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
And today, a surviving mill in a small hamlet called Gayle | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
has been restored to its former Victorian glory | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
when it was used to process timber. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
Where better to send our woodwork enthusiast, James, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
along with his wife, Cathy? | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
They are meeting volunteer Tony Ralph to find out | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
all about the mill's changing fortunes. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
Welcome to Gayle Mill. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
Built in 1786 or thereabouts. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
It was built as a water powered cotton mill | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
and it ran like that for about 100 years. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
Then it was changed to a sawmill | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
and the water powers all the machinery in the mill. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
-You will be dead keen to find out about that, won't you? -I will. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
-He's a bit of woodworker. -Really? -Only an amateur. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
Well, get your house bought up here and then you can be a volunteer. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
Right! We'll try hard. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:21
After two centuries, Gayle Mill closed for business in 1988. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:28
But campaigners secured enough funds to restore the Grade II listed | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
building that had stood derelict for 16 years. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
Restoration took four long years and the site now runs as a charitable | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
trust where volunteers have a key role in day-to-day operations. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
This is the workshop floor of the mill, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
where you see all the Victorian machinery around us, | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
which was all put in in 1879 | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
and the Williamson Brothers turbine was put in downstairs. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:57
It is reputed to be the only in situ working turbine | 0:17:57 | 0:18:01
-definitely in this country and possibly the world. -Wow. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
I'd really like to get some hands-on experience of your machines, if that would be possible, please. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:09
-Follow me. -Thank you. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:11
The mill has been transformed into a working museum | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
and heritage centre for woodworking | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
and crafts which provide an income to help run the site. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
-Right, so you want to make something? -Yes, please. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
Tony's supervising James and Cathy as they attempt to make a boot-jack, | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
a hands-free way to remove your muddy boots. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
First, the shape is drawn out on a thin piece of timber | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
and then it is cut out. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
Can you turn the turbine on, please? | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
Water from Gayle Beck powers the turbine which drives the bandsaw. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
And finally, the rough edges are planed with a hand tool. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
I think we are about there. Yes, that's looking good. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
The acid test is... | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
-Hooray! -There is your muddy boot. -Thank you very much. -Thank you. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
-It's been a pleasure working with you. -It's been a pleasure having you. It has really. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:18
With a handmade memento from their time in the Dales, we need to | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
find our buyers a rural home to use it, so it's back to the house hunt. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:26
We are travelling further north into the Dales for our next property. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
We're headed for the small hamlet of Cowgill, which was | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
once in North Yorkshire until the boundary was moved a few years ago. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
So now it makes up part of the Cumbrian landscape. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
Just three miles away, the quiet village of Dent is the nearest place | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
to pick up basic amenities with a general store and a post office. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
And back in Cowgill, our next house lies within a small | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
cluster of properties situated in the midst of lush countryside. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
So this is our second property we want to show you. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:07
It is really idyllic, isn't it? A lovely view at the back with the viaduct. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
That is the Arten Gill Viaduct from Settle to Carlisle. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
What you think of the actual property itself? | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
It looks as if it has recently been done up a bit. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
Very good observation. In 1987, it was made into a house. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
The upstairs was put on. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
The current owners have done so much work to it inside. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:30
-Transformed it and this garden as well. -It looks beautiful. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:36
-It looks absolutely beautiful. -Are you itching to get in? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
-Desperate to get in. -Come on. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
Again, made of natural local stone, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
this detached home was believed to have been built in the mid-1800s but | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
has been sympathetically renovated and retains a real rustic charm. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
Welcome to your, well, I am going to call it a cottage, | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
-because it is a big cottage but it has a cottagey feel to me. -It does. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
-It does, very much so. -I think it feels friendly. -Does it? | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
Yes, and cosy, I think. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
Well, I am going to go past the front door and take you | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
and show you the reception room through here. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
I like to think of this room as a little bit of a snug. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
-Yes, it's quite cosy, isn't it? -Yes. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
Windows on all sides, so good natural light during the day. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
If you just have a look around the corner. Have a peek. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
I didn't expect that to be there. That's nice. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
It is a good use of the space, isn't it, as an office? | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
So, size-wise? | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
It feels, I'm not saying very small, but it feels a little bit small. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
By the time I've put books and music | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
and everything else into here, I think it might feel a bit small. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
I get the sense the ground floor dimensions aren't quite working, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
but there is a little bit more down here in the shape | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
of a utility room and a downstairs toilet. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
Upstairs, an elegant bathroom sits alongside three | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
bedrooms in total, all of which are well presented double rooms. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
-So, your master bedroom. -This feels quite big for a bedroom. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
It feels more in keeping than downstairs. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:20
So, so far so good up here? | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
-So far so good. -Slightly redeemed ourselves? | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
-Yes. -Let's head back downstairs. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
Thankfully, both Cathy and James are warming to the property | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
and I've got high hopes with another south-facing garden. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
The majority of the third-of-an-acre plot sits to the front | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
of the property, with large lawns and deep floral borders | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
and this time we've got a workshop as well as a greenhouse. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:48
-Surrounded by stunning countryside here, aren't you? -Certainly are. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
-Beautiful. -It's really lovely. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
Let's talk price, shall we? To see if that makes any changes. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
-Who wants to guess the price first? -You guess first. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
I would think we are in a national park, so my guess would be it would | 0:23:03 | 0:23:08
be slightly more expensive than the first house and I would guess at 395. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
OK. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:12 | |
I suppose I would go slightly less than that and say 385. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
The asking price is £425,000. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
I'm not surprised because it is a beautiful house. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
We've spoken to the owners. They are aware of your budget. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
They would be happy to have a conversation with you. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
-That is always worthwhile, isn't it? -Yes. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
-Why don't you have another look on your own and come and see me when you're done. -OK. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:39
Edging over budget with an asking price of £425,000, | 0:23:41 | 0:23:46
the second in our selection | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
is a detached stone built 19th century cottage | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
that comes with a bespoke farmhouse kitchen diner, three bedrooms | 0:23:50 | 0:23:55
and a landscaped garden featuring a huge workshop | 0:23:55 | 0:23:59
as well as a large greenhouse. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
-How big is this? -It's substantial, isn't it? | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
-I think you are quite taken with this. -No, it is quite well-planned! | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
The man-space was very attractive from the outside and even more so inside. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
It was very roomy, well lit with electricity | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
and plenty of space to do a number of things. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
It's an idyllic spot, but for me | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
the layout wasn't quite as attractive as the first house we saw. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
I would say it is a beautiful house that has been lovingly restored | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
and it couldn't be in a more gorgeous setting. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
But whether it is the right house for James and I, I'm not sure. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:42
This really is the most glorious spot. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
I don't think I'd ever get bored with that view. Beautiful. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
-Talking of beautiful, are we done? -We are, thank you. -We are. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
-Seen enough? -Yes. -So that's it for today. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
-We've shown you two houses and we're now going to hit the road. -OK. Thank you very much. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
The second day of our house quest is upon us | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
and on a budget of £400,000, James and Cathy want to escape | 0:25:23 | 0:25:28
suburban Cheshire and flee to the North Yorkshire Dales. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
Still to come, a bumpy venture with the mystery house. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
-How are you feeling? -Shaken. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
And I meet a Yorkshire-based wool aficionado | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
who refuses to follow the flock. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
You can't beat driving around the countryside in the Dales | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
on a hot and sunny day, and yesterday was no exception. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:56
So with our mystery house today, it has land, it has space, | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
it has character, it has charm. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
It also has a view to die for. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
The question is, will it be a step, or should that be a drive, too far? | 0:26:05 | 0:26:10
Let's find out. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:11
For the mystery house, we're travelling to the eastern | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
side of the National Park, | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
destined for the rural outskirts of Thoralby, which is a sleepy place | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
where characterful stone properties frame the village green. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
But despite its small size, key businesses include a shop, | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
post office and public house. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
Beautiful, isn't it? What do you think of that setting? | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
-Is this what you had in mind when you thought you wanted to move to the Dales? -Definitely. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:42
-It's beautiful. -James? -Yes, it's postcard pretty, isn't it? | 0:26:42 | 0:26:46
That is good because the mystery house isn't that far from here. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
This would be the local village. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
But in order to get there, we have to go in one of these. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56
-So if you'd like to jump in. -Right. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
One of the main motivations for James and Cathy's move | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
is to get away from neighbours, so for our last property stop, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
we are testing just how isolated they are prepared to go. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
Let the mystery house journey begin. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:15
To get to the mystery property, we are only travelling just over a mile | 0:27:18 | 0:27:22
away from the centre of the village. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
But it's a road trip only accessible in a four-by-four | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
along a single track that takes about 15 minutes | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
as we have to drive very slowly. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
Remind me never to use the word "semi-rural" again! | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
On foot, it is a very healthy 20-minute walk and what blissful | 0:27:40 | 0:27:45
surroundings in which to get out and stretch your legs. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
-How are you feeling? -Shaken. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
-But not stirred, James?! -Not stirred yet, no. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
-Guess what? -What? -We are nearly there. -I don't believe it. | 0:27:55 | 0:28:00
We are arriving at the mystery property from the back | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
but to fully appreciate the house in all its glory, we are heading | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
straight around to the front. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:10
So, our third and final property, | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
the mystery house. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
It looks lovely, looks like somebody has spent some time and thought. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:22
It looks absolutely new in terms of the windows and things like that. | 0:28:22 | 0:28:26
It was built in 1614. It would have been a farmhouse originally. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
It's got a slate roof. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
But the current owners have been here for ten years | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
and have beautifully restored the property. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
-Shall we step inside? -Love to. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:39
With an incredible 360-degree uninterrupted aspect, | 0:28:42 | 0:28:46
this 17th-century detached stone built property | 0:28:46 | 0:28:49
completely encapsulates a truly rural retreat. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:53
Assuming Cathy and James' nerves are settled from the drive, | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
I am very optimistic that the accommodation should fit the bill. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
-Straight into the kitchen. -Right. It is nice and airy, isn't it? | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
It's a nice layout, the way they have it set out. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:10
-There is plenty of room to cook. -And eat. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
There is room around the table for six if you had them. | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
-If they ever found the place! -If they do the trek! | 0:29:16 | 0:29:19
Are you surprised at this kitchen as you walk through the door? | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
I was thinking it would be more olde worlde | 0:29:22 | 0:29:25
and hops on the beams and things like that. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
-But it's nice and modern and clean. -And roomy. -And roomy. -Yes. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:32
Have you seen enough of the kitchen? | 0:29:32 | 0:29:35
Yes. I'd like to see some more of the house, please. | 0:29:35 | 0:29:37
OK, we're going to go next door into the sitting room. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:40
Not quite as large as the kitchen. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
It feels nice and cosy | 0:29:45 | 0:29:46
so although it is not as big as perhaps we might have hoped, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:50
it feels a nice room. | 0:29:50 | 0:29:51
I am going to tell you this straightaway, | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
the way the house is, this is the only sitting room. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:57
Something to think about, then. | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
You do have a very large pantry but it's like a walk-in pantry | 0:29:59 | 0:30:04
and they use it as storage. It's huge. | 0:30:04 | 0:30:07
Very cool at the moment with all the stone. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:09
You also have a utility room as well | 0:30:09 | 0:30:11
-but you don't have another reception room on this floor. -OK. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:15
-Shall we go upstairs and show you the bedrooms? -Love to. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:17
Despite the somewhat compact size of the living room, our buyers will be | 0:30:20 | 0:30:23
relieved to know that this property has grander proportions upstairs. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:28
There is a large four-piece family bathroom that serves | 0:30:28 | 0:30:31
the three spacious double bedrooms our buyers asked for | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
and we are heading to the biggest one. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
At the moment, the current owners use this as the master. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:41
-The family bathroom is just next door. -It's a nice room, isn't it? | 0:30:41 | 0:30:46
It feels really clean and clear. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
Do you like the property so far? | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
Let's forget about planes, trains and automobiles to get up that track. The actual house itself. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:57
-Yes. -Yes. -Love the location. The views are stunning, as you said. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:02
The interior is really nicely done. The rooms are a nice size. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
Let's go back outside. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:07
James, you are going to lead the way | 0:31:07 | 0:31:08
-because I've still got some more to point out and show you. -Oh, good. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:12
I've got a sneaking suspicion | 0:31:13 | 0:31:15
that James is quite moved by our mystery house so far. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
When it comes to outbuildings, well, with three to choose from, | 0:31:18 | 0:31:22
there is plenty more for him to get his teeth into. | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
So let's talk garden and land. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:31
If you look over there, there's a field. That's about 1.2 acres. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:35
Then you've also got just under an acre behind us there. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:39
So two acres in total. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
The other thing I wanted to mention was these buildings to the side of us. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:45
That is all with the property. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:47
They are actually very large | 0:31:47 | 0:31:49
-so if you wanted a huge man den or workshop... -There is one there. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:55
-You could convert those. -Very good. -What about the property itself? | 0:31:55 | 0:31:59
-What do you think? -It's lovely. It's lovely. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
The only little fly in the ointment | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
is the fact the sitting room is a bit snug. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:10
-A bit too snug. -Mmm. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
If you look to the side, there is an attached part of the house. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:16
An attached barn. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:18
So you could easily extend through from that snug, | 0:32:18 | 0:32:22
have a second sitting room and if you were really keen, | 0:32:22 | 0:32:25
you could extend the top and have another bedroom with an en-suite. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
In fact, probably two. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:30
So, what price do you want to put on our mystery house? | 0:32:30 | 0:32:34
Cathy, I think you should go first. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:37
-I will say 400,000. -OK. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:39
I think it will be even more, I'm afraid. I think it will be 425. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:45
We are in the National Park, | 0:32:46 | 0:32:47
which, as we know, does reflect the price of properties. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
The current asking price for the mystery house is £390,000. | 0:32:50 | 0:32:55
There you go. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
So just under your budget. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
Now, the owners are realistic. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
They've got to sell the property. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:04
So they are happy to have a conversation with you. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
I think we would like to have that conversation with them. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
-Fantastic. -Way to go! | 0:33:12 | 0:33:14
That is a very good reaction, so why don't you take another look? | 0:33:16 | 0:33:20
Start with the attached barn because there is so much potential with that building. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:24
And then have another look around that beautiful farmhouse. Go on. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
-We will do that. -Off you go. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:28
Under budget at £390,000, | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
the mystery house is a 17th-century stone built converted | 0:33:34 | 0:33:37
farmhouse that offers a beautiful kitchen diner, | 0:33:37 | 0:33:42
three double bedrooms, | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
three huge stone barns | 0:33:44 | 0:33:46
and just over two acres of land. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
All wrapped up by awe-inspiring Dales countryside at its loveliest. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:53
-It is a size, isn't it? -It's huge. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
Very big. Lots of potential, though. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:05
It would be nice, I don't know much about construction, | 0:34:05 | 0:34:08
but to make it a living area downstairs | 0:34:08 | 0:34:11
and then you could do a workshop upstairs, if you wanted. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:15
-Or even a master bedroom with an en-suite. -Steady! | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
I thought the house looked really great. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:22
It's got fantastic views over the valley | 0:34:22 | 0:34:24
and it's in very good condition. | 0:34:24 | 0:34:26
Somebody has obviously spent a lot of time thinking through | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
what they were going to do with a very old building. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:32
I think overall, the property is the most comprehensive of the three | 0:34:32 | 0:34:37
we have seen in terms of our needs. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:40
When you first approach the house, | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
you are actually coming to the back of the house | 0:34:42 | 0:34:45
but as you walk around to the front, that is even more stunning | 0:34:45 | 0:34:48
and the views take your breath away. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:50
The rooms are all well renovated | 0:34:51 | 0:34:54
but they look plain and sensible | 0:34:54 | 0:34:58
and it looks like you could move in and just | 0:34:58 | 0:35:01
put your furniture in it and it would be perfect. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
Idyllic and, at the same time, challenging. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:07
Have you seen enough of our mystery house? | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
Yes, for a first visit, thank you. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:14
You have got a lot of thinking to do so why don't you go off | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
and I'll catch up with you in a little while. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
Look forward to seeing you soon. | 0:35:19 | 0:35:20
If there's one thing synonymous with the glorious Yorkshire Dales | 0:35:25 | 0:35:29
scenery, then it has to be sheep. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:31
And the area has a long and rich heritage of wool production. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
But today, the majority of wool manufacturing is outsourced | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
overseas, having a detrimental effect on the long-standing | 0:35:39 | 0:35:43
traditional British crafts such as spinning and weaving. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:47
But on a farm near Richmond, | 0:35:47 | 0:35:49
pioneering ethical entrepreneur Isabel Davies has successfully | 0:35:49 | 0:35:53
combined her passion for animal welfare with her sense of style. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
She's created a fashion label | 0:35:58 | 0:36:00
using wool from her own rescued flock of sheep. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:03
And every single part of the process | 0:36:03 | 0:36:05
relies on centuries-old British skills. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:08
So Isabel, when did you decide you wanted to become a knitwear designer? | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
I have an organic home delivery company and it was whilst | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
meeting farmers who were supplying the organic company | 0:36:15 | 0:36:19
I discovered that wool in this country is being burned | 0:36:19 | 0:36:22
and buried because the price they were being paid for it didn't | 0:36:22 | 0:36:25
even cover the shearing costs. | 0:36:25 | 0:36:28
So I decided I wanted to do something using British wool. | 0:36:28 | 0:36:31
But I immediately ran into the problem of, I'm vegetarian, | 0:36:31 | 0:36:35
I can't use wool from animals that are going to be slaughtered. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:39
So I set about rescuing my own flock. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:43
So in actual fact, | 0:36:43 | 0:36:45
you have this dream of every process being done in the UK. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:48
-But it's quite difficult to achieve that. -It's really hard to achieve it. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:52
It doesn't help that a lot of our wool is exported directly over to Asia, | 0:36:52 | 0:36:57
bypassing all our textile industry. | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
So all the wool just gets processed over there. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
I had no idea that perhaps the jumper I could be wearing | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
could have more air miles than me attached to it. | 0:37:05 | 0:37:08
-Are these some of your herd? -Yes. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:10
We are shearing over here if you want to come and have a look. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
I would absolutely love to. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:15
-Are these the Shetlands? -These are the Shetlands, yes. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:17
Isabel started off with just six sheep, | 0:37:18 | 0:37:22
but now there are 600 in her flock, including rare breeds and Shetlands | 0:37:22 | 0:37:26
that create a very fine and soft wool. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:28
They are sheared once a year in the early summer months. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
-I can't believe how quick this gentleman is. -They are incredible. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:37
-How long does it take? -About one and a half minutes. -Is that all? -Yes. | 0:37:37 | 0:37:42
I should think in this hot weather they are relieved | 0:37:42 | 0:37:46
-when all that fleece is off them. -Absolutely. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:48
We've got a fleece actually... I mean, this looks beautiful. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:52
-And it feels so soft. -It is really beautiful. | 0:37:52 | 0:37:55
This fleece here probably will weigh about one and a half kilos. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
So by the time we've washed it, scoured it, | 0:37:59 | 0:38:03
all the grease will come out and it will weigh about 750 grams. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:07
And to me, what would that produce? | 0:38:07 | 0:38:09
That would produce a large chunky jumper | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
or a couple of skirts or a suit. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:14
Once the sheep are sheared, | 0:38:16 | 0:38:18
a number of processes take place, all within a 120-mile radius. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:23
The wool is washed, spun, dyed and weaved, before getting | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
transformed into one of Isabel's own designs created in her home studio. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:32
I can see you've got some examples in front of us. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:36
-Is this all your own wool that you use? -Yes. This is all our own wool. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:40
This is from the Wensleydale sheep. It's very lustrous and silky. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:45
You can actually wear it against the skin | 0:38:45 | 0:38:47
because it doesn't have the prickly, coarse hairs in, | 0:38:47 | 0:38:50
which are called kemp. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:51
This is hand-knitted here in the Dales. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:54
And then once you've finished with it, | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56
when it goes back into the ground it totally biodegrades, | 0:38:56 | 0:39:00
which is unique to wool. It's an incredible fibre. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:03
It keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. | 0:39:03 | 0:39:07
How important do you think it is for us to know where our clothes come from? | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
We feel like that about food. Do you think it has transferred to clothes as well? | 0:39:10 | 0:39:14
I think it is slowly transferring to clothes. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
As indeed all products and all industries, | 0:39:17 | 0:39:20
we have to be sustainable. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:22
Championing the reinvigoration of largely undervalued homespun technologies, | 0:39:22 | 0:39:26
Isabel's business model is setting a unique trend, | 0:39:26 | 0:39:31
looking backwards for the future of fashion. | 0:39:31 | 0:39:33
And her customers have the added value | 0:39:33 | 0:39:36
that their wares are the product of a rather contented flock. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:39
So James and Cathy have now seen our three properties. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:49
The first one in the middle of the village, | 0:39:49 | 0:39:52
I think, really took their fancy. | 0:39:52 | 0:39:54
But then suddenly, at the mystery house, in the final hour, | 0:39:54 | 0:39:57
James said he would consider discussing and negotiating on the price. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
Such a curveball. I didn't see that coming. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
So I've given them a bit of time to think, contemplate and discuss. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:07
Let's see what their final thoughts are. | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
We have shown you three very different properties, actually, | 0:40:15 | 0:40:19
but all characteristic of this area. | 0:40:19 | 0:40:22
Any favourites? | 0:40:23 | 0:40:25
It's testing because each one of them is beautiful in their own way. | 0:40:25 | 0:40:31
So each one of them delivers some of the things we were looking for | 0:40:31 | 0:40:35
but none of them delivers all of them. | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
The last house, as a property, was the most satisfying for us. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:42
However, the journey to it from the public roads, it does need | 0:40:42 | 0:40:48
some thought as to whether we could put up with that on a daily basis. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
The first house, I think, is the other one we would want to give series consideration to. | 0:40:51 | 0:40:56
Whilst it was the most disappointing as we arrived at it, | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
-it got better the further we got into the house and into that beautiful garden. -Oh, the garden. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:04
Where do you go next from here? | 0:41:04 | 0:41:06
Is it worth a second visit for either of those properties? | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
I think we need to get home, | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
study the details and then return to the Dales | 0:41:11 | 0:41:14
to have a look at at least two of the houses we have seen | 0:41:14 | 0:41:17
and hopefully we will look to make somebody an offer. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:19
-Did I hear right? -You did. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
We would like to move sooner rather than later | 0:41:24 | 0:41:27
and if we can reach a deal, because I always like to bargain a little, | 0:41:27 | 0:41:31
then hopefully we can make somebody an offer they will find too good to say no to. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:36
You've got to tell me. Which one is closest? | 0:41:36 | 0:41:38
Wigglesworth or the mystery house? | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
I think subject to talking to Catherine, Wigglesworth would | 0:41:41 | 0:41:44
be the one I think we are more likely to proceed with. | 0:41:44 | 0:41:47
Please enjoy that second viewing of both those properties. | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
And if you've got any good news, you will share it with us, won't you? | 0:41:50 | 0:41:54
-Certainly. -It has been an absolute pleasure. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:56
Thank you both and I'm glad we've helped you on the road to moving to North Yorkshire. | 0:41:56 | 0:42:00
-Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
I am delighted James and Cathy have decided that two of our properties | 0:42:05 | 0:42:10
merit a second viewing, especially that wonderful mystery house. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:14
But it is important when considering living in such a rural location | 0:42:14 | 0:42:19
the practicalities of life in the country. | 0:42:19 | 0:42:22
But it hasn't seemed to put our couple off and the good news is, | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
Cathy seems as keen as ever to return to her Yorkshire roots | 0:42:26 | 0:42:30
and James has decided that the Dales is the place where he wants to live. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:34
We wish them all the very best. Until next time, goodbye. | 0:42:34 | 0:42:38
James and Cathy revisited the mystery house | 0:42:41 | 0:42:43
as well as the first house, | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
but sadly, they decided against them both. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:47
However, the good news is that they have fallen for another property | 0:42:47 | 0:42:51
in Wigglesworth, which they are currently pursuing. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
If you'd like to escape to the country in England, Wales, | 0:42:54 | 0:42:57
