For centuries, ships set sail from this historic port

0:00:020:00:05

loaded up with a mineral that has put this county

0:00:050:00:07

on the international map.

0:00:070:00:08

Find out what it is and where I am in just a few moments.

0:00:080:00:11

On today's show we're helping a couple who have given up work

0:00:290:00:31

to enjoy some quality time together.

0:00:310:00:34

We'll be putting our feet up at one of our properties.

0:00:340:00:37

Reading the Sunday papers, having a coffee.

0:00:370:00:40

And love is in the air at another.

0:00:400:00:42

She might even kiss you at that one.

0:00:420:00:44

Today I'm in Fowey in Cornwell.

0:00:450:00:47

During the early 1900s, this county produced and exported

0:00:470:00:50

more than half of the world's supply of china clay

0:00:500:00:53

and it remains a multi-million pound industry today.

0:00:530:00:56

In fact, you can still see the huge cargo ships

0:00:560:00:59

travelling through this harbour on their way out sea.

0:00:590:01:01

Later on, I'll be popping into Fowey

0:01:010:01:04

to find how they celebrate their maritime heritage,

0:01:040:01:06

but first let's see what else makes this county

0:01:060:01:09

such a special place to be.

0:01:090:01:11

England's most westerly county Cornwall is bordered

0:01:130:01:16

by only one other, Devon to the east.

0:01:160:01:19

The rest of its boundary is coastal,

0:01:190:01:21

offering over 400 miles of dramatic shoreline,

0:01:210:01:25

with the Atlantic to the north and the English Channel to the south.

0:01:250:01:29

Exposed to prevailing winds,

0:01:290:01:31

it's no surprise that parts of Cornwall are a surfer's paradise,

0:01:310:01:35

with sandy beaches such as Fistral now world-famous for its waves.

0:01:350:01:39

But for those after a slower pace of life,

0:01:410:01:43

the coastal county is also home to pretty villages

0:01:430:01:46

and attractive harbour towns, including Fowey.

0:01:460:01:49

Inland, Cornwall's still bears the marks of the heavy industry

0:01:510:01:54

that once thrived here in the 19th century

0:01:540:01:56

when tin and copper mining was at its peak.

0:01:560:01:59

And at the heart of the county lies the wild expanse of Bodmin Moor.

0:01:590:02:04

Archaeologists have found evidence of human activity here

0:02:040:02:06

stretching back some 4,000 years.

0:02:060:02:10

It's this variety of landscape

0:02:100:02:12

that makes Cornwall such a popular destination

0:02:120:02:15

for those wanting the quieter life.

0:02:150:02:17

The average price for a detached house here in Cornwall

0:02:200:02:22

is around £262,000.

0:02:220:02:25

That's around £5,000 above the national figure.

0:02:250:02:29

According to local estate agents,

0:02:290:02:30

they expect the market to remain fairly buoyant

0:02:300:02:32

over the next few years due in no small part

0:02:320:02:35

to the strong tourist industry,

0:02:350:02:36

which then in turn fuels demand for second properties -

0:02:360:02:40

especially around coastal areas like this.

0:02:400:02:42

Now, heading over to firm favourites like Fowey and St Mawes,

0:02:420:02:45

well, a sea view can actually

0:02:450:02:47

double the asking price of a property.

0:02:470:02:49

But whereabouts in Cornwall do today's buyers want to look?

0:02:490:02:52

Let's meet them and find out.

0:02:520:02:54

For the past five years,

0:02:550:02:56

Christopher and Margaret have lived in this three-bedroom house

0:02:560:02:59

in the city of Worcester,

0:02:590:03:01

but now they're seeking a complete change from the hustle and bustle

0:03:010:03:04

of the West Midlands.

0:03:040:03:06

Living in Worcester, it's very nice.

0:03:060:03:10

It's a nice city but we are in the middle of a housing estate.

0:03:100:03:14

Even though we've got a lovely, quirky house in that housing estate,

0:03:140:03:18

but you can hear quite a lot of traffic noise

0:03:180:03:20

when you're sat outside.

0:03:200:03:22

I think we'd like a more village lifestyle, possibly,

0:03:220:03:26

so we could get involved with the local community.

0:03:260:03:29

They've been married for 18 years and they first met

0:03:290:03:32

through a dating agency,

0:03:320:03:33

but it wasn't the first time Margaret has clocked Chris.

0:03:330:03:37

She said, "I know you!"

0:03:370:03:39

I said, "Do you? I don't know you."

0:03:390:03:41

And it turned out we'd lived six doors away from each other.

0:03:410:03:46

Started chatting, dating and I moved in two months later.

0:03:460:03:51

Chris is taking early retirement as an electrical engineer.

0:03:510:03:55

He's looking forward to spending more time in the garden

0:03:550:03:58

and on his other hobbies.

0:03:580:03:59

I've always liked messing about in boats and on water.

0:03:590:04:03

You know, I find it very calming.

0:04:030:04:05

At the moment, living in Worcester,

0:04:050:04:07

we're quite a long way away from the sea,

0:04:070:04:09

and I hope that when we get to Cornwall

0:04:090:04:13

we'll be doing a lot more sailing.

0:04:130:04:16

Margaret has also given up work as a nurse

0:04:170:04:20

after receiving some bad news a few years ago.

0:04:200:04:22

One day I was just walking back to the car

0:04:220:04:25

and started staggering around the car park,

0:04:250:04:28

like I'd had sort of 20 pints or something!

0:04:280:04:31

Then upon investigations at hospital and everything

0:04:310:04:34

they found out that I had a brain tumour.

0:04:340:04:37

Although she's been given the all-clear,

0:04:370:04:39

Margaret's recent set back has been the catalyst in this move.

0:04:390:04:43

This is why it's come to this point now.

0:04:430:04:45

With me having my illnesses,

0:04:450:04:47

it's as if it's a kick-start,

0:04:470:04:50

saying "Come on, you've got the opportunity now to do it."

0:04:500:04:53

And with their grown-up children from previous marriages

0:04:530:04:56

having all flown the nest,

0:04:560:04:57

it's now a chance to spend some quality time together.

0:04:570:05:00

As Margaret regained some strength,

0:05:000:05:03

we hope that we can do a lot more walking across the coast of Cornwall,

0:05:030:05:09

across the beaches, take the dogs.

0:05:090:05:11

They love running across the beaches and going in the water.

0:05:110:05:14

I want to have more time with my wife.

0:05:140:05:16

I want to have more time to do the things that are pleasurable.

0:05:160:05:21

All that's left is to find out how much is financing

0:05:210:05:24

this new life in the Cornish countryside.

0:05:240:05:26

The budget for the move to Cornwall is £500,000.

0:05:260:05:31

Chris and Margaret would prefer to be close to the sea

0:05:350:05:37

in a village location so we're concentrating our property search

0:05:370:05:40

with that in mind.

0:05:400:05:42

I'm meeting them at a seaside spot close to Falmouth,

0:05:420:05:45

an area they know well.

0:05:450:05:47

What is it about Cornwall that draws you both here, then?

0:05:480:05:51

It's the variety.

0:05:510:05:53

It's not just the seaside and the countryside,

0:05:530:05:58

it's also the moors to walk on.

0:05:580:06:00

There's such a variety of little villages, little towns to visit.

0:06:000:06:06

Little ports and...yes, little fishing villages.

0:06:060:06:08

Quite right. There's so much more to this county, isn't there?

0:06:080:06:11

Are you looking forward to getting stuck into that?

0:06:110:06:13

Yeah, absolutely, cos every time...

0:06:130:06:15

I mean, we come to Cornwall a few times a year

0:06:150:06:17

and we always find something new and somewhere new to visit.

0:06:170:06:20

Let's look at the house itself.

0:06:200:06:22

-You're bringing a couple of dogs with you.

-Yeah.

0:06:220:06:24

Margaret, how big does this house need to be?

0:06:240:06:26

-We only really need three bedrooms.

-OK.

0:06:260:06:29

You know, we haven't got family living with us as such,

0:06:290:06:32

although it would be nice to have some separate accommodation

0:06:320:06:34

that we could either rent out as a holiday accommodation annexe,

0:06:340:06:38

or even to our family to stay.

0:06:380:06:39

OK.

0:06:390:06:41

This separate accommodation, is this on your wish list, this?

0:06:410:06:43

-Yes.

-Right.

0:06:430:06:45

To be able to afford the lifestyle we want down here,

0:06:450:06:49

we need some sort of an income to supplement what we're going to be

0:06:490:06:54

getting from our pensions.

0:06:540:06:55

Right.

0:06:550:06:56

So it's a three-bedroom house with some gardens.

0:06:560:06:58

-With some character.

-What do you count as character?

0:06:580:07:01

We would like something that is perhaps done in Cornish stone.

0:07:010:07:05

Right.

0:07:050:07:06

-Or slate...

-Right.

0:07:060:07:08

..of some description.

0:07:080:07:09

-Something like that to give it a bit of Cornish character.

-OK.

0:07:090:07:12

I mean, there's a lot of real estate.

0:07:120:07:14

You look around, actually, there's not a whole lot

0:07:140:07:17

of old Cornish-stone properties around,

0:07:170:07:20

certainly not for sale of a certain size.

0:07:200:07:22

How open-minded are you to this sort of character?

0:07:220:07:25

Again, I think, you know, we really don't want a new build,

0:07:250:07:30

but again, I suppose we're open to anything. You never know, do you?

0:07:300:07:33

Let's see how we get on with the first house.

0:07:330:07:35

I've got a fair idea of what are essential parts of the house,

0:07:350:07:38

size and location.

0:07:380:07:39

And from then on, we'll go from there.

0:07:390:07:40

-All right?

-OK, great.

0:07:400:07:42

-Great, thank you.

-Just this way.

-OK.

0:07:420:07:43

For a budget of £500,000,

0:07:460:07:48

Chris and Margaret would like an older property with character.

0:07:480:07:52

In addition to the three bedrooms,

0:07:520:07:54

Margaret would like a traditional farmhouse kitchen.

0:07:540:07:57

Ideally, the property would come with

0:07:570:07:59

separate accommodation for holiday guests.

0:07:590:08:01

They want a moderately-sized garden for the dogs

0:08:010:08:04

and they'd like their house to be in a village location

0:08:040:08:07

and most importantly close to the sea for Chris's sailing.

0:08:070:08:12

We've got three wonderful Cornish homes lined up to captivate

0:08:120:08:15

Chris and Margaret, and at each one,

0:08:150:08:16

they'll have to guess the price at the end of the tour.

0:08:160:08:20

Our last property is the mystery house

0:08:200:08:22

which may require our buyers to look beyond what's already there.

0:08:220:08:26

So, you're both sailors, I take it?

0:08:320:08:34

Not necessarily myself by choice.

0:08:340:08:37

Oh! Ho-ho!

0:08:370:08:39

It's a case of either getting involved or stay at home, isn't it?

0:08:390:08:43

So I do quite enjoy it, actually. I love being on the boat.

0:08:430:08:46

OK, so, does that make you the skipper then, Chris?

0:08:460:08:50

Yes.

0:08:500:08:51

When we first talked about having a boat,

0:08:510:08:54

my wife wanted a caravan, so I got her one that floated.

0:08:540:08:57

Oh, OK, that's not a bad compromise.

0:08:580:09:00

Sounds like you're good at making those then, are you?

0:09:000:09:03

I try and make compromises in life, yes.

0:09:030:09:06

Yeah, all right. I wasn't thinking about you, Chris.

0:09:060:09:08

I know, I was going to say, I think I make more than...than you!

0:09:080:09:12

For our first property, we're heading a little inland

0:09:120:09:15

from Falmouth to the village of Malpas.

0:09:150:09:18

The closest amenities can be found two miles away in Truro,

0:09:180:09:21

which despite its city status has the feel of a small town,

0:09:210:09:25

with a range of shops lining its Georgian cobbled streets.

0:09:250:09:29

Dominating the skyline is

0:09:290:09:31

the impressive Victorian Gothic cathedral.

0:09:310:09:34

10 minutes drive away is house number one,

0:09:340:09:36

nestled on the high banks overlooking the Truro River,

0:09:360:09:39

and it's a bit of a climb to get there.

0:09:390:09:42

Well, the climb is certainly worth it

0:09:420:09:44

when you come up to this front garden.

0:09:440:09:46

-Yeah.

-Come on in.

0:09:460:09:48

Goodness.

0:09:480:09:49

So, house number one is this.

0:09:490:09:53

-Wow.

-OK.

0:09:530:09:55

-Looks lovely.

-Spectacular view.

0:09:550:09:57

-Yeah, absolutely.

-Isn't it just?

0:09:570:09:58

Boats. Gosh, seeing that every morning.

0:09:580:10:01

So, location-wise, close enough to water for you?

0:10:010:10:04

-Plenty close, yeah.

-Couldn't get much closer, could you? Yeah, it's lovely.

0:10:040:10:08

The house. Now, you can't see from here, but it's semidetached.

0:10:080:10:11

-All right.

-What's your thoughts on that?

0:10:110:10:13

-It wouldn't be first choice.

-No.

-No.

0:10:130:10:14

OK. I don't think it's many people's first choice,

0:10:140:10:17

but it's the compromise of getting this, isn't it?

0:10:170:10:19

-It's the view, yeah.

-Yes.

-It's great.

0:10:190:10:21

-Let's look inside.

-BOTH: OK.

0:10:210:10:23

It's not the traditional Cornish stone they're after,

0:10:230:10:26

but this 1960s semidetached property

0:10:260:10:28

has made a good first impression,

0:10:280:10:30

thanks largely to its fantastic river views,

0:10:300:10:33

and that's why we've brought them here first.

0:10:330:10:37

So...

0:10:370:10:39

the kitchen.

0:10:390:10:40

Who does all the cooking?

0:10:400:10:42

-Me.

-Right.

0:10:420:10:43

-So you're the boss.

-Gosh, yeah.

0:10:430:10:45

Imagine cooking there, looking out.

0:10:450:10:47

I won't be doing any cooking, will I?

0:10:470:10:49

That's it, takeaways from now on.

0:10:490:10:51

Well, whoever gets landed with the washing-up

0:10:510:10:53

has the best view in the house, don't they?

0:10:530:10:55

-Is this big enough?

-Yeah, yeah.

-OK.

0:10:550:10:57

I mean, it is literally only the two of us and two dogs.

0:10:570:11:00

We have visitors, family to stay but, yeah, it's certainly big enough.

0:11:000:11:05

Now, you said you wanted a house with character.

0:11:050:11:07

It's 1960s which a lot of people say well, you know, it's modern.

0:11:070:11:10

-It's now over 50 years old.

-Gosh.

0:11:100:11:12

This is period property we're looking at now.

0:11:120:11:14

Does this have enough character for you?

0:11:140:11:17

Probably not to start with.

0:11:170:11:19

It's not ideal,

0:11:190:11:20

but it's certainly on the way towards what we would like, I think.

0:11:200:11:24

I think the kitchen

0:11:240:11:26

has been done very nicely to a good standard,

0:11:260:11:28

and yes, we could live here.

0:11:280:11:30

Yeah, definitely.

0:11:300:11:32

As well as the kitchen, the ground floor also features

0:11:320:11:34

a dining room with patio doors opening onto the front garden.

0:11:340:11:38

Built into the hillside,

0:11:380:11:40

the accommodation is arranged over three levels.

0:11:400:11:42

So half a floor up, if you like, you get this fantastic living room.

0:11:440:11:48

Ah!

0:11:480:11:50

-The view is spectacular, eh?

-Absolutely.

-Absolutely.

0:11:500:11:54

-Let's go have a look then, shall we?

-OK.

0:11:540:11:56

Well, this is kind of an outside room now, isn't it?

0:11:560:12:00

Oh!

0:12:000:12:02

It's lovely.

0:12:020:12:03

-Gosh.

-It's fantastic.

0:12:030:12:05

It's nice the way it changes all the time,

0:12:050:12:07

the tide goes in and out, the boats turn around.

0:12:070:12:09

There's always something going on.

0:12:090:12:11

This probably wasn't what you had in mind,

0:12:110:12:13

but can you see yourself here so far?

0:12:130:12:16

I could certainly see myself sat here with a glass of wine

0:12:160:12:19

admiring the view, looking at the wildlife.

0:12:190:12:22

Chris can look at the boats... or be on the boat.

0:12:220:12:25

-Yes, I'd rather be down on the boat a lot of the time.

-Yeah.

0:12:250:12:28

Well, if you're a reluctant sailor,

0:12:280:12:30

you can watch him potter about on his boat,

0:12:300:12:31

and have a nice glass of white wine in your hand.

0:12:310:12:33

That sounds a good idea.

0:12:330:12:35

-Let's go take a look at our bedroom.

-OK.

0:12:350:12:38

Up on the top floor, there are four bedrooms.

0:12:380:12:40

Three of those are doubles and there's one single,

0:12:400:12:42

which is currently being used as a study.

0:12:420:12:45

They're all serviced by a large family bathroom

0:12:450:12:48

and an additional toilet.

0:12:480:12:50

Two of the double bedrooms have fantastic views

0:12:500:12:52

over the front of the house,

0:12:520:12:53

and one of those could be Chris and Margaret's master.

0:12:530:12:57

Guess what, it's got an amazing view.

0:12:570:12:59

-Yes, every room seems to.

-Just for a change! Yeah.

0:12:590:13:02

What's going through your minds at the moment?

0:13:020:13:04

This is the first house we're seeing,

0:13:040:13:05

so let's talk size at the moment.

0:13:050:13:07

You know, it's a four bedroom

0:13:070:13:09

but I don't know what your room sizes are like at the moment.

0:13:090:13:12

-We have a very large bed.

-That's true.

0:13:120:13:15

Cos we've got a super king-size bed so it's...it's rather large.

0:13:150:13:19

-I would like a bigger bedroom than this, to be honest.

-Fine.

0:13:190:13:22

All right. That's good to know. What do you think, Margaret?

0:13:220:13:25

Yeah, probably the same, but I'm still open to...

0:13:250:13:28

You know, we don't know what the other bedrooms are like

0:13:280:13:30

and the rest of the house, so it's a complete package, isn't it,

0:13:300:13:33

trying to find the, you know...?

0:13:330:13:34

It is, yeah.

0:13:340:13:36

I mean, if you took us took us straight into a house

0:13:360:13:38

that was just absolutely wow in every room or something, it'd be...

0:13:380:13:41

She might even kiss you at that one.

0:13:410:13:43

-God, I don't think he'd want that!

-I've got to pick my game up, haven't I?

0:13:430:13:46

-I was hoping this view was kiss-worthy, but maybe not.

-Yeah.

0:13:460:13:48

OK, well, look,

0:13:480:13:50

let's go outside now towards the back of the house

0:13:500:13:53

to have a look at the garden,

0:13:530:13:54

and start, if you can, to think about the price.

0:13:540:13:57

-OK.

-All right?

-Right, OK.

0:13:570:13:59

-I'll lead the way.

-Yep.

0:13:590:14:01

As well as the lawn and patio at the front of the house,

0:14:040:14:07

the property comes with a large secluded landscaped garden

0:14:070:14:10

to the rear with further patio areas overlooking the river.

0:14:100:14:13

So what do you think then, Chris?

0:14:140:14:16

-Well, it's lots more than I've got now, which is good.

-OK.

0:14:160:14:21

And it's got lots of little sun traps, which is nice as well.

0:14:210:14:25

-Yeah, it is private, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:14:250:14:27

We're up on a hill looking down over everybody else,

0:14:270:14:29

which is rather nice, isn't it?

0:14:290:14:31

How much do you think this house is on the market for?

0:14:310:14:33

Taking everything into account of where it is,

0:14:330:14:36

the outlook and everything, I'd put it at £475,000.

0:14:360:14:40

-All right. Margaret?

-Again, lovely location.

0:14:400:14:43

You can't fault that whatsoever.

0:14:430:14:46

I think less than that, I'm afraid. About £430,000.

0:14:460:14:50

Ooh, right.

0:14:500:14:51

Well, you're in for a bit of a shock then.

0:14:510:14:54

This place is on the market for offers around £500,000.

0:14:540:14:59

-I think we're paying for the view.

-You are, absolutely you are.

0:14:590:15:04

So, where do we go from here?

0:15:040:15:05

Well, I think you guys should go back inside,

0:15:050:15:08

have a look around everything you haven't yet seen

0:15:080:15:10

and I'll meet you whenever you're done.

0:15:100:15:12

-OK.

-All right? Mind your step on the way down.

-OK.

0:15:120:15:15

Bang on budget at £500,000,

0:15:190:15:21

our first property is a semidetached modern house

0:15:210:15:25

perched high above the Truro River.

0:15:250:15:27

It has a large contemporary kitchen and an upstairs living room

0:15:270:15:31

with doors opening onto a balcony.

0:15:310:15:33

There are four good-size bedrooms

0:15:330:15:35

and outside a dog-friendly garden with fantastic views

0:15:350:15:39

over the river estuary.

0:15:390:15:40

As I approached the property,

0:15:400:15:42

I was a little bit worried about all the steps we had to come up,

0:15:420:15:44

because we're not getting any younger

0:15:440:15:46

and that could prove a bit of a problem in the future.

0:15:460:15:48

Overall, the house is in very good order.

0:15:480:15:51

The views are absolutely wonderful

0:15:510:15:53

and I could just imagine Chris down there on his boat

0:15:530:15:56

and me up here doing the cooking watching him.

0:15:560:15:59

The kitchen was lovely. The views were to die for.

0:15:590:16:03

With all things considered,

0:16:030:16:05

I don't think it's going to be a contender.

0:16:050:16:07

I think the steepness of the walk up, due to my wife's previous illness,

0:16:070:16:12

would prove a barrier as we get older.

0:16:120:16:14

I just don't think it's going to be a contender for us.

0:16:140:16:17

I must say, I'm loath to leave this place, this beautiful view.

0:16:210:16:25

-All done inside?

-Yeah, I think so, yeah.

0:16:250:16:27

-OK.

-Lovely.

0:16:270:16:28

-Onto the next one.

-OK.

0:16:280:16:30

At over 400 miles,

0:16:360:16:38

Cornwall's coastline is the longest of any county.

0:16:380:16:41

Due to its growing popularity as a tourist destination,

0:16:410:16:44

more and more people are using its beaches and the sea.

0:16:440:16:48

This, in turn, is leading to an increasing number of call-outs

0:16:480:16:50

for the charity responsible for sea rescue,

0:16:500:16:53

the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

0:16:530:16:56

Chris loves the water

0:16:570:16:58

and Margaret wants to get involved in community activities,

0:16:580:17:02

so we sent them to the RNLI lifeboat station in Falmouth

0:17:020:17:05

to find out about the life-saving service and to see if they can help.

0:17:050:17:09

They are meeting the station's chairman Alan Barnes.

0:17:090:17:12

How long has the RNLI been here in Falmouth in this station?

0:17:140:17:17

Well, actually, the lifeboat service has been here since 1867.

0:17:170:17:21

The first boat was called The City of Gloucester

0:17:210:17:24

and it was given by the people of Gloucester

0:17:240:17:26

and brought to Falmouth by rail,

0:17:260:17:28

brought through the town by horse and carriage

0:17:280:17:30

and it was housed in the dockyard over here.

0:17:300:17:33

And how long have you had the present boat?

0:17:330:17:35

Since about 2001.

0:17:350:17:37

She was named by the Queen on the start of her Golden Jubilee tour.

0:17:370:17:41

What's the most usual call-outs you get here?

0:17:410:17:43

You know, where a boat will go out to medical evacuations,

0:17:430:17:48

ships on fire.

0:17:480:17:50

Vessels that are broken down.

0:17:500:17:51

We've had a tug that's steering broke that we had to get in.

0:17:510:17:55

This is the 18th busiest station in the RNLI.

0:17:550:17:59

There was 80-odd calls last year.

0:17:590:18:01

Both Chris and Margaret are keen to get involved,

0:18:010:18:04

and like all the stations around the country,

0:18:040:18:07

RSLI Falmouth relies almost entirely on local volunteers

0:18:070:18:10

to keep the service going,

0:18:100:18:12

from helping with fundraising to piloting the boats themselves.

0:18:120:18:17

The station's offshore lifeboat

0:18:170:18:18

is designed to function in all weathers.

0:18:180:18:20

Normally crewed by seven volunteers,

0:18:200:18:23

it has enough space to accommodate 28 survivors.

0:18:230:18:26

Offering to show them around is volunteer Bill Hudson.

0:18:260:18:30

Each seat has a harness on it.

0:18:300:18:33

If the boat capsizes, which is a very, very rare,

0:18:330:18:37

it can turn over and back up again in 10 seconds

0:18:370:18:40

and you'll still be sitting in your seats.

0:18:400:18:43

What sort of speed does the vessel maintain?

0:18:430:18:45

When she's going out to a shout, then obviously, you know,

0:18:450:18:48

you're on full-throttle to get there as fast as you can

0:18:480:18:51

and she can push up to about 25 knots.

0:18:510:18:53

Can I just have a go at seeing how it is to...?

0:18:530:18:55

Yeah, of course you can. Help yourself to steering.

0:18:550:18:58

Yeah, just keep away from the rocks.

0:18:580:19:00

-SHE LAUGHS

-Yeah!

0:19:000:19:02

Now that Chris and Margaret have been shown the ropes,

0:19:020:19:05

it's time to see if we can come to the rescue

0:19:050:19:07

and find them a new home here in Cornwall.

0:19:070:19:10

For our second property, we're venturing 50 miles east,

0:19:120:19:15

away from the part of Cornwall by Chris and Margaret know well

0:19:150:19:19

to the village of Downderry.

0:19:190:19:20

The coastal village has a strong community feel to it,

0:19:200:19:23

and there's a wide range of facilities,

0:19:230:19:25

including a post office and a pub with its own deli.

0:19:250:19:30

Both the village and beach offer views over the bay

0:19:300:19:33

towards Looe Island, and our second property,

0:19:330:19:36

situated in the heart of Downderry, takes full advantage of them.

0:19:360:19:41

So then, house number two... is this one.

0:19:410:19:44

-Nice position.

-Yeah, lovely.

0:19:440:19:46

-Isn't it just?

-Mm.

-Yeah.

0:19:460:19:48

You can imagine, as soon as we get a bit of elevation,

0:19:480:19:50

you're going to have some fantastic sea views.

0:19:500:19:52

Mm-hm.

0:19:520:19:53

-So, what do you think about the style of it?

-Yeah, very unusual.

0:19:530:19:56

Not quite sure what it's going to be like inside.

0:19:560:19:59

Well, believe it or not, this dates back to the early 1900s.

0:19:590:20:03

-Gosh.

-But it's got a much more modern facade.

0:20:030:20:06

The new conservatory certainly adds to that, doesn't it?

0:20:060:20:09

-BOTH: Yeah.

-Fancy looking inside?

0:20:090:20:11

-Yeah, absolutely.

-Good.

0:20:110:20:14

Our second property's age should appeal to Chris and Margaret,

0:20:140:20:17

and it's packed with character inside.

0:20:170:20:20

As well as a more gentle approach to the house,

0:20:200:20:23

all the accommodation is arranged on one level.

0:20:230:20:26

So then, let's start in the kitchen.

0:20:260:20:29

Just mind your step on the way up there.

0:20:290:20:32

Now, Margaret, you told me you do all the cooking so you're the boss.

0:20:320:20:35

-What do we think?

-Yeah, it's lovely. I like it.

0:20:350:20:38

Really nice, first impression.

0:20:380:20:40

Is it a recent addition to the building or...?

0:20:400:20:42

It's been recently done up.

0:20:420:20:43

According to the owner, this part of the house,

0:20:430:20:46

it was built at the same time as the rest of it.

0:20:460:20:48

Oh, it's lovely. They've done it really nice.

0:20:480:20:50

I like the ceiling and the light coming through the centre.

0:20:500:20:52

And all the windows around. It's very nice.

0:20:520:20:55

-Very well done.

-Yeah.

-Good.

0:20:550:20:58

All right, now, as lovely as this kitchen is,

0:20:580:21:00

I don't think we're spending a whole lot of time in here

0:21:000:21:03

because I alluded to the view earlier,

0:21:030:21:05

and this house certainly makes the most of that.

0:21:050:21:07

-All right.

-Follow me.

0:21:070:21:08

Now, this is when the Victorian

0:21:110:21:12

dimensions start to reveal themselves really, isn't it?

0:21:120:21:15

-Good size, isn't it?

-Yeah, it's a lovely size.

0:21:150:21:18

Very good, yeah. Nice high ceilings, yes.

0:21:180:21:20

The telltale signs, really, you know,

0:21:200:21:22

you've got more detail in the corners,

0:21:220:21:24

seeing deeper skirting boards, the fireplace.

0:21:240:21:27

It feels like a lot more history here

0:21:270:21:29

than we've seen so far, doesn't it?

0:21:290:21:30

-Yes.

-Sort of dimensions you had in mind?

0:21:300:21:33

-Yeah, this is lovely for a dining room.

-Fantastic.

0:21:330:21:36

It's a wonderful size, yeah.

0:21:360:21:37

One improvement the current owners have made

0:21:370:21:40

that really set this house apart is out the front here,

0:21:400:21:43

so let's take a look.

0:21:430:21:45

Now...

0:21:450:21:47

..I think this adds an essential dimension to this home,

0:21:470:21:50

bearing in mind this fantastic view, doesn't it?

0:21:500:21:53

-Gorgeous view.

-Yeah.

0:21:530:21:54

Sit here reading the Sunday papers and having coffee.

0:21:540:21:58

See, that's more like it.

0:21:580:22:00

You're talking about your everyday relaxed, retired life.

0:22:000:22:03

I like the sound of this.

0:22:030:22:04

Beautiful, isn't it?

0:22:040:22:06

-Look at all that sea.

-It is. It's a nice space.

0:22:060:22:07

-Lovely.

-I like the flooring.

0:22:070:22:09

-Yeah.

-Excellent.

0:22:090:22:10

It's very nice.

0:22:100:22:11

-Happy so far?

-BOTH: Yes.

0:22:110:22:13

A much better reaction to our second property.

0:22:140:22:18

If this sunny space and the dining room aren't enough,

0:22:180:22:20

there's a further reception area

0:22:200:22:22

at the other end of the conservatory

0:22:220:22:24

which the current owners use as their living room.

0:22:240:22:26

The house comes with four bedrooms.

0:22:260:22:29

They're all accessed by a central hallway

0:22:290:22:31

and they all have use of a large family bathroom.

0:22:310:22:34

So, the master bedroom.

0:22:370:22:39

What do we think?

0:22:410:22:43

It's wide enough. HE LAUGHS

0:22:430:22:44

What, for the all-important, what is it, king-size, is it?

0:22:440:22:48

-BOTH: Super king-size.

-Super king.

0:22:480:22:49

Yes, nice size.

0:22:490:22:51

-Now, you've got four bedrooms with this house, OK?

-OK.

0:22:510:22:54

This is easily the biggest.

0:22:540:22:57

The next biggest is the one next door,

0:22:570:22:58

and you've got two guest rooms at the end, if you like.

0:22:580:23:01

So you asked for three, you've got four

0:23:010:23:03

but a couple of them are fairly small.

0:23:030:23:05

But the good thing about those is they are self-contained

0:23:050:23:08

if you want them to be.

0:23:080:23:09

-You've got another door at the far end of the building.

-Oh, right, OK.

0:23:090:23:13

Now, there is planning consent...

0:23:130:23:16

..current to convert the loft space...

0:23:160:23:19

Oh, right.

0:23:190:23:20

..to a really nice en suite master bedroom.

0:23:200:23:25

Ooh, that sounds good.

0:23:250:23:26

That's an option for the future

0:23:260:23:28

cos obviously any alterations like that cost money.

0:23:280:23:30

Mm-hm.

0:23:300:23:32

But options, they give you.

0:23:320:23:33

Shall we have a look at the garden?

0:23:330:23:35

-OK, yeah.

-Follow me.

0:23:350:23:37

So our second property gives Chris and Margaret the option

0:23:380:23:41

to let out bedrooms to holiday guests,

0:23:410:23:44

or even the attic space should they decide to convert it.

0:23:440:23:47

The grounds include several patio and decked areas

0:23:470:23:50

and a reasonably-sized garden to the rear of the haze.

0:23:500:23:53

-So all in all, not a bad package, is it?

-BOTH: No.

0:23:530:23:57

-Very nice. Yeah.

-So how much do you think it's on the market for then?

0:23:570:24:00

Oh.

0:24:000:24:02

After getting it totally wrong last time

0:24:020:24:05

and taking into account the sea view, I'd go slightly over.

0:24:050:24:09

£510,000.

0:24:090:24:10

£510,000. OK.

0:24:100:24:13

I'm going to er on the side of caution again.

0:24:130:24:15

Trouble is you got the sea view.

0:24:150:24:17

Trouble is because of the sea view?

0:24:170:24:19

No, I don't mean that, I mean...thinking of the cost.

0:24:190:24:22

-£499,000.

-OK.

0:24:230:24:26

Well, this house is on the market for offers around £465,000.

0:24:260:24:31

Oh. Gosh.

0:24:310:24:33

-That's very, very good.

-Yeah, surprising.

0:24:330:24:35

-Isn't it?

-That's good news.

0:24:350:24:36

Now you know the price.

0:24:360:24:39

What do you think about it?

0:24:390:24:40

I know we've only just had a quick run around it,

0:24:400:24:42

but what are your thoughts?

0:24:420:24:44

It means there's extra money in the budget

0:24:440:24:47

to be able to do the extension.

0:24:470:24:49

Yeah. That could give you a bit of income.

0:24:490:24:52

I mean, it's close to the sea.

0:24:520:24:54

Maybe now go back into the house without me warbling in your ears.

0:24:540:24:58

Go on and have a look at those other bedrooms,

0:24:580:25:00

get a real feel for the place.

0:25:000:25:01

You know, go back into the conservatory

0:25:010:25:04

and maybe have time relaxing in there.

0:25:040:25:06

See if that's the sort of place, this is the sort of home, maybe,

0:25:060:25:08

that you could retire to.

0:25:080:25:10

-OK.

-All right?

-OK.

-Yeah, lovely.

0:25:100:25:11

-I'll get the papers from the car.

-Thank you.

-Don't take too long!

0:25:110:25:14

On the market at offers around £465,000,

0:25:160:25:20

our second offering is well under Chris and Margaret's budget.

0:25:200:25:24

It's a detached seaside property,

0:25:240:25:26

parts of which date back to the early 1900s.

0:25:260:25:29

There are three reception rooms, including a conservatory,

0:25:290:25:32

with stunning views over the bay.

0:25:320:25:35

It comes with four bedrooms

0:25:350:25:36

and it there's the possibility

0:25:360:25:38

of turning the attic space into a further bedroom.

0:25:380:25:41

The property has a reasonably-sized garden

0:25:410:25:43

and it's located in the middle of a vibrant village.

0:25:430:25:46

I wonder if because this end of the house has got

0:25:470:25:50

its own access whether you could

0:25:500:25:52

make this into a self-contained annexe

0:25:520:25:54

or, you know, some sort of...

0:25:540:25:56

Maybe could do B&B or...

0:25:560:25:58

We could do something with it, yes.

0:25:580:26:00

It's certainly got some beautiful sea views.

0:26:000:26:03

The accommodation, certainly enough room and everything.

0:26:030:26:06

I think with some slight adjustments,

0:26:060:26:09

maybe the loft converted into another bedroom

0:26:090:26:13

with en suite would be a nice idea.

0:26:130:26:16

And...

0:26:160:26:18

yes, certainly got a nice bright airy feel about it.

0:26:180:26:21

Overall, I think the house has got potential.

0:26:210:26:25

It leaves us room to perhaps to create the annexe that we want.

0:26:250:26:30

And it could possibly be a contender.

0:26:310:26:34

So, all done?

0:26:370:26:38

-Yeah, fine, thanks.

-Yes, thank you.

0:26:380:26:40

Give you a taste for seaside living, does it?

0:26:400:26:42

Definitely.

0:26:420:26:43

-Good.

-Very good.

0:26:430:26:44

-Let's head back.

-OK.

0:26:440:26:45

It's day two of our property search, and on a budget of £500,000

0:26:570:27:01

we're helping Chris and Margaret swap the West Midlands

0:27:010:27:04

for the West Country.

0:27:040:27:05

Coming up, size is everything at our mystery house.

0:27:050:27:08

Bit larger, isn't it, yeah? Certainly a lot bigger.

0:27:090:27:13

And I join an elite crew of oarsmen

0:27:130:27:15

at one of the county's top regattas.

0:27:150:27:17

-Don't tell me this is the raft.

-This is it. Jump up.

0:27:170:27:20

Well, so far, Margaret and Chris haven't given a great deal away.

0:27:230:27:27

So much so that I don't really have any idea

0:27:270:27:29

of which of yesterday's properties came out on top,

0:27:290:27:32

so today we want to mix things up a bit,

0:27:320:27:34

which, let's face it, that's what the mystery house

0:27:340:27:37

is all about, isn't it?

0:27:370:27:38

Now, so far, Chris hasn't seen this stone-built property he mentioned.

0:27:380:27:42

We also haven't looked around a property that gives them the ability

0:27:420:27:46

to earn some income, which they have mentioned in passing at least.

0:27:460:27:49

Well, we're going to remedy that,

0:27:490:27:51

but in order to get these attributes,

0:27:510:27:53

they will have to make a compromise and I think that comes in the form

0:27:530:27:56

of doing some work to the property.

0:27:560:27:59

For our mystery house,

0:27:590:28:00

we're heading back towards where we started

0:28:000:28:02

in the west of the county

0:28:020:28:04

to the pretty coastal village of Porthallow.

0:28:040:28:06

And before we go to the mystery house,

0:28:060:28:08

we're making a stop at the village.

0:28:080:28:10

It's somewhere Chris and Margaret have never been before

0:28:100:28:12

and has a number of features that I think will appeal.

0:28:120:28:16

Dog-friendly beach. Coastal path going either side of it.

0:28:160:28:20

-What do you make of it so far?

-It looks really nice.

-Lovely, yeah.

0:28:200:28:23

-Really impressed.

-Nice and peaceful.

0:28:230:28:25

Lovely open space to watch the boats.

0:28:250:28:27

Believe it or not, this beach and this car park

0:28:270:28:30

was bought and is owned by the village itself.

0:28:300:28:32

They formed a trust in the 1970s.

0:28:320:28:34

They're doing up village hall. There's a great community here.

0:28:340:28:37

You've got a pub, you've got a tea shop.

0:28:370:28:39

And I remember you said yesterday,

0:28:390:28:41

"Oh, I could just see myself having a glass of wine,"

0:28:410:28:43

in one of the properties.

0:28:430:28:44

-Yeah.

-Well, they've got a vineyard here as well.

-Oh!

0:28:440:28:46

-Very Euro.

-Maybe not a good idea!

0:28:460:28:48

Well, yeah, that could be bad news. So, what do you think?

0:28:480:28:51

Is this the sort of place you could see yourself putting down roots?

0:28:510:28:53

Oh, yeah. Could walk out here every morning and stay here all day.

0:28:530:28:57

-Good place to walk a dog, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, great. Fantastic.

0:28:570:29:00

OK, let's see what you make of the house itself. Just this way.

0:29:000:29:02

OK.

0:29:020:29:04

Our mystery house is just a few minutes walk from the beach.

0:29:050:29:08

The property does give Chris and Margaret

0:29:080:29:11

the self-contained holiday let they were after,

0:29:110:29:14

but they may need to add their personal touch to the house.

0:29:140:29:18

-Very nice.

-You found the slate.

-Yeah.

0:29:180:29:20

And the stone, or granite maybe.

0:29:200:29:23

It was actually built in the '70s.

0:29:230:29:25

-But do you like the character?

-Yes.

0:29:250:29:27

What do you think of the position?

0:29:270:29:28

Lovely.

0:29:280:29:30

-Quiet, isn't it?

-Very quiet.

-Very nice.

0:29:300:29:32

I want you to be fairly open-minded as to maybe decor and what have you.

0:29:320:29:38

-Tell me what you really think.

-OK.

-All right?

-BOTH: Yeah.

0:29:380:29:40

-Let's go.

-OK.

0:29:400:29:42

Initial impressions are favourable and there's lots of potential

0:29:420:29:45

with this house if Chris and Margaret are open

0:29:450:29:48

to doing a bit of work.

0:29:480:29:49

Now, you've got a couple of reception rooms

0:29:510:29:52

to choose from at the moment.

0:29:520:29:54

The first one here being used as an office.

0:29:540:29:57

Let's take a peek in the dining room,

0:29:570:29:59

which is a bit bigger.

0:29:590:30:00

Adequately-sized for a dining room.

0:30:000:30:03

Yeah, it's a good size.

0:30:030:30:04

Now, if you kept this as a dining room,

0:30:040:30:06

it would mean you'd have a fairly modest-sized living room.

0:30:060:30:10

I was wondering whether or not

0:30:100:30:11

you could dispense with the formal dining room

0:30:110:30:13

and maybe knock this wall through to have one big living room.

0:30:130:30:16

-Mm-hm.

-And maybe do something with the kitchen.

-Right.

0:30:160:30:19

Let's take a look at the kitchen, see what you think of it.

0:30:190:30:21

So, we see the kitchen is a decent size.

0:30:260:30:29

Yes.

0:30:290:30:30

It's nice and bright again with the dual-aspect windows.

0:30:300:30:33

Lots of work surfaces.

0:30:330:30:34

Would you keep the kitchen as it is

0:30:340:30:36

and maybe muck around with the dining and living room?

0:30:360:30:39

-I think that would be the first job.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:30:390:30:41

That would also keep this a dining-kitchen still

0:30:410:30:43

because you've got the utility behind you

0:30:430:30:45

to get all the stuff out of the way.

0:30:450:30:46

-Oh, right.

-Yeah.

0:30:460:30:48

-OK?

-Yeah.

0:30:480:30:49

So...

0:30:490:30:51

let's take a look at your master bedroom

0:30:510:30:54

before we look at the added extras, shall we?

0:30:540:30:56

BOTH: OK.

0:30:560:30:57

The downstairs also has a shower room,

0:30:590:31:01

handy for Chris when he comes home after a day at sea.

0:31:010:31:04

Upstairs there are four double bedrooms,

0:31:040:31:06

three of which have built-in wardrobes

0:31:060:31:08

and a family bathroom with corner bath.

0:31:080:31:11

All of the bedrooms are a decent size,

0:31:110:31:13

but the master is something else.

0:31:130:31:16

I'm hoping you're going to like this master bedroom.

0:31:160:31:18

Ooh.

0:31:210:31:22

That's giving us the space, definitely.

0:31:220:31:24

It's a bit larger, isn't it, yeah? Certainly a lot bigger.

0:31:240:31:27

Beautiful windows and lovely aspect.

0:31:270:31:30

-And certainly got the space.

-Plenty of light.

0:31:300:31:33

It might not come as a surprise,

0:31:330:31:34

this house used to be an upside-down house.

0:31:340:31:38

They used to have the living room up here

0:31:380:31:40

because of this beautiful view,

0:31:400:31:41

but I think as a bedroom, it really works.

0:31:410:31:43

-Yeah.

-It's lovely.

0:31:430:31:45

Yeah, definitely, with the outlook over the garden and everything. That's lovely.

0:31:450:31:48

-Very positive, I'm thinking.

-Yeah, yeah, lovely size, definitely.

0:31:480:31:52

OK, well, before we go outside,

0:31:520:31:54

there is a potential moneymaking aspect to this house as well

0:31:540:31:57

so let's take you there.

0:31:570:31:59

OK.

0:31:590:32:00

Our previous property offered Chris and Margaret the potential

0:32:010:32:04

to rent out individual rooms to holiday guests,

0:32:040:32:07

but our mystery house comes with an up-and-running holiday let

0:32:070:32:10

in a separate wing.

0:32:100:32:11

So now we come into the annexe.

0:32:130:32:15

-Oh, right.

-Good.

0:32:150:32:17

-An extra living room.

-That's a good size.

0:32:170:32:19

-It is a nice size, the room.

-Yeah, lovely size.

0:32:190:32:21

Well, you might not be using it because behind that door

0:32:210:32:24

-is an en-suite shower room with a loo.

-Oh.

0:32:240:32:27

Then separate front door...

0:32:270:32:30

kitchen, bedroom.

0:32:300:32:32

-Ah.

-Ah. Nice.

0:32:320:32:34

-Yeah.

-That's some earning potential.

0:32:340:32:35

-That's the sort of thing we were looking for, definitely.

-Yes.

0:32:350:32:38

-Good.

-Yeah, definitely.

0:32:380:32:40

Well, it's earning potential but it's got a track record.

0:32:400:32:43

Last reported figures on this place showed

0:32:430:32:47

a gross turnover of just under £8,000.

0:32:470:32:51

That was let, I think, something like 27 weeks in that year.

0:32:510:32:54

-OK.

-Not bad, eh?

0:32:540:32:56

Yeah, good. Definitely.

0:32:560:32:58

OK, so, more than enough bedrooms for you.

0:32:580:33:02

Letting accommodation. All we need now is some outside space, don't we?

0:33:040:33:07

-Yep.

-We do.

0:33:070:33:08

Lead the way.

0:33:080:33:09

And that space includes a large gravel driveway,

0:33:120:33:15

plenty of room for visitors and guests.

0:33:150:33:17

And a double garage at the back of the house

0:33:170:33:19

for Chris to store all his sailing equipment.

0:33:190:33:22

There's also a patio area with a pond,

0:33:220:33:25

enough grass for the dogs to run around on,

0:33:250:33:27

as well as a separate section for growing vegetables.

0:33:270:33:31

-So, what do you think?

-Oh, lovely and peaceful, isn't it?

0:33:310:33:34

Very quiet.

0:33:340:33:36

-Yes.

-It's nice.

0:33:360:33:37

How much do you think this mystery house is on the market for?

0:33:370:33:42

Taking everything into consideration,

0:33:420:33:43

I'd say £520,000.

0:33:430:33:45

All right.

0:33:450:33:46

I think it will be somewhere around £490,000.

0:33:460:33:49

Pretty good guess.

0:33:490:33:51

This place is on the market for offers around £479,000.

0:33:510:33:54

Mm-hm. Still under budget, isn't it?

0:33:540:33:56

That's under budget so yes, it's good.

0:33:560:33:58

Gives you some change to maybe make some cosmetic changes,

0:33:580:34:02

update a few bits and bobs.

0:34:020:34:04

-Mm-hm.

-Yes.

0:34:040:34:05

So, go back inside the house.

0:34:050:34:06

There's lots to it and you might get a better idea of where you might

0:34:060:34:10

want to knock a few walls down.

0:34:100:34:11

-OK.

-All right.

-Take as long as you like.

0:34:110:34:13

-OK.

-I'll enjoy the garden.

-Great.

-Catch you later on.

0:34:130:34:16

Bye-bye.

0:34:160:34:17

Well, certainly a lot more animated in this house looking around

0:34:180:34:22

because it gives them so much more

0:34:220:34:24

of an option for living accommodation,

0:34:240:34:26

but also to maybe earn money,

0:34:260:34:28

and it's hard not to fall in love with this location, isn't it?

0:34:280:34:31

On the market for £479,000,

0:34:330:34:35

our mystery house is £31,000 under budget,

0:34:350:34:39

leaving some money in the pot to make changes.

0:34:390:34:41

It's a slate and stone-fronted property built in the 1970s.

0:34:410:34:45

The accommodation includes a spacious sitting room

0:34:450:34:48

and dining room that could be knocked through together

0:34:480:34:51

to make a larger reception area.

0:34:510:34:53

There are four bedrooms and it comes with a self contained annexe

0:34:530:34:56

which would be perfect for a holiday let.

0:34:560:34:59

The location is absolutely superb.

0:34:590:35:01

Village-wise, it looks really good down there.

0:35:010:35:05

The house itself is delightful.

0:35:050:35:07

It is a little dated so it will need some cosmetic updating.

0:35:070:35:12

I would imagine that I would go for it more than Margaret.

0:35:120:35:15

I'm not 100% sure I could see myself living here.

0:35:150:35:19

The position, location, fantastic, but all in all,

0:35:190:35:23

maybe the house just isn't quite right for me.

0:35:230:35:25

-So, all done inside and out?

-Yeah.

-We are.

0:35:280:35:30

-Did you get right to the back of the garden?

-I did, yeah.

0:35:300:35:33

-It's a cracking spot, isn't it?

-Yeah, lovely views over the valley.

-Good.

0:35:330:35:36

All right, let's find you somewhere to have a bit of a chat and a think

0:35:360:35:39

-and we'll catch up later on.

-OK, lovely.

0:35:390:35:41

Coastal Cornwall is rightly proud of its maritime heritage.

0:35:470:35:51

Situated on the southern coast of the county is Fowey,

0:35:510:35:54

not only a historic town

0:35:540:35:55

but also a thriving commercial seaport,

0:35:550:35:58

exporting locally-mined china clay to destinations around the globe.

0:35:580:36:02

For most of the year, it's a peaceful place.

0:36:020:36:05

But for one week each August everything changes

0:36:050:36:08

when the world-famous Royal Regatta comes to town.

0:36:080:36:12

As well as the serious business of yacht racing,

0:36:120:36:14

events include a town carnival and a fireworks display.

0:36:140:36:18

I'm meeting up with Leslie McCartney to find out

0:36:180:36:20

more about its illustrious past and its current form.

0:36:200:36:25

-Now then, Leslie. Beautiful day.

-Lovely, isn't it?

0:36:250:36:27

-Beautiful part of the world.

-Beautiful.

0:36:270:36:29

How long has it been going here?

0:36:290:36:31

Well, it was noted that in 1838 the regatta was well-established.

0:36:310:36:35

But in its present form, it's been going about 50, 60 years.

0:36:350:36:39

-Now, I've heard it called a Royal Regatta.

-That's right.

0:36:390:36:42

Really?

0:36:420:36:43

That's because Queen Victoria and Prince Albert,

0:36:430:36:46

they visited Fowey in 1846.

0:36:460:36:49

Did they now? So it keeps its Royal status.

0:36:490:36:52

Yes, it does.

0:36:520:36:53

I don't think I've ever been to a Cornish town so busy.

0:36:530:36:55

I mean, it's so full of people. How many people come here each year?

0:36:550:36:58

Absolutely tens of thousands, yeah, into Fowey.

0:36:580:37:01

-Tens of thousands of people?

-Yeah.

0:37:010:37:03

How much money is generated from this each year?

0:37:030:37:05

It's been reported £5 million comes into Cornwall's economy

0:37:050:37:09

just through Regatta Week.

0:37:090:37:10

-Just through this one week?

-Yes.

0:37:100:37:12

Now, looking around here, that does not look like a posh yacht race.

0:37:120:37:15

-There's all sorts of stuff going on.

-Yeah.

0:37:150:37:17

-Talk me through some of the events here.

-It's all sorts of crazy stuff today.

0:37:170:37:21

Later on we've got some swimming races

0:37:210:37:23

and we've also got a raft race.

0:37:230:37:25

-A raft race.

-Yeah.

0:37:250:37:26

Now, a little birdie tells me

0:37:260:37:27

that I might be getting a bit more involved in that.

0:37:270:37:30

What kind of rafts are they?

0:37:300:37:32

Built at the last minute.

0:37:320:37:34

A few oil drums, I expect.

0:37:340:37:35

-HE LAUGHS

-Nothing that should float.

0:37:350:37:37

I've got to say, it doesn't sound particularly seaworthy.

0:37:370:37:40

And I'll be judging that, will I?

0:37:400:37:41

Um, you might be involved in some way, yes.

0:37:410:37:44

Oh, good.

0:37:440:37:46

Well, it turns out that my involvement is going to be

0:37:460:37:48

a bit more hands-on than just judging the race.

0:37:480:37:50

I've been told to meet Jodie Makin at the end of the pier

0:37:500:37:54

and to wear a wet suit.

0:37:540:37:56

Now, Jo, I understand you built the raft

0:37:580:38:00

-that we're racing on today.

-Yep.

0:38:000:38:02

Right, OK, so you're local then, yeah?

0:38:020:38:04

No, I'm from Bolton. My mum and dad live down here.

0:38:040:38:06

Bolton. Not known for its boat building, is it?

0:38:060:38:09

-Not particularly, no.

-OK.

0:38:090:38:10

-Do this all the time, do you?

-No, first time.

0:38:100:38:13

-First time you build a raft?

-Yep.

-Right. OK.

0:38:130:38:15

So what made you get involved this year?

0:38:150:38:18

My kids have been asking for a few years to do it

0:38:180:38:20

so this year we decided to have a go.

0:38:200:38:22

So surely, you know, you've built this raft,

0:38:220:38:24

you're going to show us all how it's done.

0:38:240:38:26

You're going to captain this boat.

0:38:260:38:27

-Nope.

-Why not?

0:38:270:38:29

Because I built it and I've seen it, so...

0:38:290:38:31

-That's why I'm going on it, is it?

-That's right.

0:38:310:38:33

Right, which way is this boat?

0:38:330:38:35

Just over there.

0:38:350:38:36

Thanks.

0:38:360:38:37

Well, I'm sure it can't be that bad.

0:38:370:38:39

There are certainly some impressive looking vessels here,

0:38:390:38:42

and I get the feeling that perhaps

0:38:420:38:43

I'm not taking this seriously enough.

0:38:430:38:45

Time to meet my crew.

0:38:450:38:46

Now then, I'm reporting for duty.

0:38:460:38:48

I understand I'm in the raft race.

0:38:480:38:50

-Yes, you are.

-Don't tell me this is the raft.

0:38:500:38:52

This is it. Jump up.

0:38:520:38:54

Right.

0:38:540:38:55

Gordon Bennett.

0:38:550:38:57

Oh!

0:38:570:38:59

HE LAUGHS

0:38:590:39:00

Whoa! OK!

0:39:000:39:02

We're going to actually race in this thing, are we?

0:39:020:39:05

-Yeah, you are, mate.

-Yeah, out.

0:39:050:39:07

Dig your paddle in.

0:39:070:39:08

-You're off!

-Whoa!

0:39:080:39:10

ALL LAUGH

0:39:110:39:13

It's off to a good start, then.

0:39:130:39:15

Perhaps the clue was in the name of the raft.

0:39:150:39:17

I'll swim it.

0:39:170:39:19

She's not getting back on!

0:39:190:39:20

Does anybody else want to come on the raft?

0:39:200:39:23

That set back makes us late

0:39:230:39:25

in lining up for the start of the 50 metre race,

0:39:250:39:28

with a new crew member on board.

0:39:280:39:29

MAN OVER LOUDSPEAKER: Race start. Ready. Go!

0:39:290:39:33

Come on!

0:39:410:39:42

We're taking on water!

0:39:440:39:45

Oh.

0:39:490:39:51

Got to finish, come on, guys.

0:39:510:39:53

But despite all the effort, we finish in last place.

0:39:580:40:02

A bad workman blames his tools or his crew.

0:40:050:40:08

This was an elite crew of amateurs led by a fool.

0:40:080:40:12

-Sorry, guys.

-It's fine.

0:40:120:40:14

It was good.

0:40:150:40:17

We nearly won.

0:40:170:40:19

With the fun over, it's back to the serious matter of finding

0:40:190:40:22

Chris and Margaret somewhere to live,

0:40:220:40:23

and I'm keen to see what they think of the houses we've shown them.

0:40:230:40:28

So, after a short amount of time to think about things,

0:40:300:40:33

which one of the three properties is your favourite?

0:40:330:40:36

I think I'd go for the first property.

0:40:370:40:40

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:40:400:40:42

Decor-wise and the way the place is actually set out,

0:40:420:40:45

it's absolutely beautiful, and the views.

0:40:450:40:47

The unfortunate problem is the steps,

0:40:470:40:50

which would prove too much, I think.

0:40:500:40:52

-Do you agree?

-I agree mostly with my wife.

0:40:520:40:56

Yes, the views were absolutely stunning for us,

0:40:560:40:58

some of the best I've seen.

0:40:580:41:00

It is the steps that would prevent us from going for that one.

0:41:000:41:03

Goodness me. That is a surprise.

0:41:030:41:06

I thought the mystery house was the ace up my sleeve.

0:41:060:41:10

You know, the practicality.

0:41:100:41:12

There was no steps.

0:41:120:41:13

All the size, the earning potential.

0:41:130:41:16

Yes, it had all...

0:41:160:41:17

But it's the semidetached house you went for.

0:41:170:41:19

Yes, surprise surprise.

0:41:190:41:21

Why, though? Is it just those views that blew you away?

0:41:210:41:23

The views blew us away, definitely.

0:41:230:41:25

Right.

0:41:250:41:27

And the location, closeness to Truro.

0:41:270:41:30

If you had to buy one of those houses at the money

0:41:310:41:34

that they're on the market at,

0:41:340:41:36

are you telling me that you would, out of those three,

0:41:360:41:38

buy house number one?

0:41:380:41:39

Yes.

0:41:390:41:40

So moving forward, what's the most important thing?

0:41:400:41:42

What are you going to drop off this list?

0:41:420:41:44

Or are you just going to keep looking until

0:41:440:41:46

hopefully you find all the criteria you set out?

0:41:460:41:48

-We know that there's got to be a compromise.

-Yeah.

0:41:480:41:52

And we think that the view will be the compromise,

0:41:520:41:55

that we'll have to go more inland.

0:41:550:41:57

Sure.

0:41:570:41:58

Well, you do get a bit more for your money inland,

0:41:580:42:00

so I wish you the very best of luck.

0:42:000:42:02

I've loved looking for property around here.

0:42:030:42:06

It's a great part of the world,

0:42:060:42:07

and I see why you and many more people like you

0:42:070:42:10

want to move down here.

0:42:100:42:11

So whatever happens, please let us know what you do, won't you?

0:42:110:42:14

-We will do.

-OK.

-Good luck.

-BOTH: Thank you.

0:42:140:42:16

Well, I'm not surprised that

0:42:180:42:20

Chris and Margaret's favourite property

0:42:200:42:22

was house number one, given those fantastic views.

0:42:220:42:24

And sea views were their priority.

0:42:240:42:27

I am somewhat taken aback however

0:42:270:42:29

that in order to proceed in their search down here in Cornwall

0:42:290:42:33

they're going to compromise on views in order to hopefully

0:42:330:42:36

obtain earning potential, enough bedrooms and a nice flat garden,

0:42:360:42:40

but then surely isn't that the mystery house

0:42:400:42:43

that they've recently seen?

0:42:430:42:45

I'm not sure. Maybe it's all down to taste.

0:42:450:42:47

What I do wish them, though,

0:42:470:42:48

is the very best of luck in looking for a property

0:42:480:42:51

in this absolutely glorious part of the world.

0:42:510:42:55

See you next time.
