Welcome to Escape To The Country.

0:00:020:00:03

Now, today we're in a county that was home to one of

0:00:030:00:05

the 20th century's most famous playwrights

0:00:050:00:08

who came up with a fairly novel idea

0:00:080:00:11

for allowing the sun to shine on his work all day long.

0:00:110:00:14

So who was he and where are we?

0:00:140:00:16

Well, join me in just a moment and I'll tell you.

0:00:160:00:18

Today's couple are newlyweds hoping to kick off their married life

0:00:350:00:38

together in the countryside.

0:00:380:00:40

One of our properties leaves them stumbling for words...

0:00:400:00:43

Look at your face.

0:00:430:00:45

-You're speechless.

-Yeah, speechless.

-Yeah.

0:00:450:00:48

..and another manages to amaze.

0:00:480:00:50

Wow, wow, wow.

0:00:500:00:52

-Wow, wow. Oh, my wow.

-"Oh, my wow."

0:00:520:00:55

JULES LAUGHS

0:00:550:00:57

Well, today we are in Hertfordshire and the building behind me is

0:00:590:01:02

known as Shaw's Corner, just outside Welwyn, and it was home to none

0:01:020:01:06

other than Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw and his wife Charlotte.

0:01:060:01:11

Now, they lived here from 1906 up until his death in 1950

0:01:110:01:14

and you might have assumed that the old man would have done

0:01:140:01:17

most of his work at home.

0:01:170:01:19

But, no, not Shaw.

0:01:190:01:21

For the last 20 years of his life he preferred to work in the garden.

0:01:210:01:24

Or, more specifically, his garden shed.

0:01:290:01:32

This was Shaw's creative escape,

0:01:320:01:36

his writer's retreat.

0:01:360:01:37

And if I just open the door, you can see it's pretty simply furnished.

0:01:370:01:42

A bunk for an afternoon nap, a desk, a typewriter, of course,

0:01:420:01:46

it even had a telephone so he could call up the housekeeper

0:01:460:01:49

and order lunch.

0:01:490:01:51

Now, back in Shaw's day these trees hadn't grown up

0:01:510:01:54

and this tiny cabin enjoyed far-reaching views

0:01:540:01:57

but in order to ensure that the sunshine kept on him all day

0:01:570:02:00

long, he had the whole thing set on a turntable...

0:02:000:02:05

and it still works.

0:02:050:02:07

How about that for a creative idea?

0:02:070:02:10

Hertfordshire is one of England's Home Counties and is bordered

0:02:170:02:21

by Buckinghamshire to its west, Bedfordshire to the north

0:02:210:02:24

and Essex to the east.

0:02:240:02:26

A countryside of rolling chalk hills and river valleys,

0:02:270:02:30

much of Hertfordshire's terrain is given over to agriculture

0:02:300:02:33

with pretty villages dotting the landscape.

0:02:330:02:36

Places like Much Hadham served as a useful stopping point

0:02:360:02:39

for horse-drawn coaches on the route from London to Cambridge.

0:02:390:02:43

The county is home to many historic houses and was a popular

0:02:440:02:47

rural escape for London's nobility during the 19th century.

0:02:470:02:51

Grand estates, such as Brocket Hall near Welwyn, inspired Jane Austen

0:02:520:02:55

to set her classic novel, Pride And Prejudice, in the region.

0:02:550:02:59

Indeed the work's famous television adaptation starring Colin Firth

0:02:590:03:02

used the neoclassical stately home as a filming location.

0:03:020:03:06

Hertfordshire is home to a number of parklands of note.

0:03:070:03:11

Verulamium Park, set in 100 acres of beautiful green space

0:03:110:03:15

just outside St Albans,

0:03:150:03:16

is named after the Roman city buried underneath.

0:03:160:03:19

With the county's southern border only 20 miles

0:03:200:03:23

from the centre of the capital, Hertfordshire is a popular

0:03:230:03:26

choice for those seeking a rural haven within easy reach of the city.

0:03:260:03:31

Now, at the moment the cost of an average detached house

0:03:340:03:37

here in Hertfordshire is an eye-watering £538,000.

0:03:370:03:43

That's double the national average.

0:03:430:03:46

Now, that figure is inflated by some very expensive commuter hot spots

0:03:460:03:49

where you could end up paying three times the national figure.

0:03:490:03:54

So, as a general rule of thumb,

0:03:540:03:56

the further north you go away from London, the cheaper it gets.

0:03:560:04:00

So, let's now meet today's buyers, find out

0:04:000:04:02

where in Hertfordshire they want to be and why they want to be here.

0:04:020:04:07

Newlyweds Anthony and Marie, who's from Japan,

0:04:070:04:10

live in a two-bedroom apartment in the heart of London's trendy Hoxton.

0:04:100:04:14

They met six years ago on a language exchange and married

0:04:140:04:18

in Marie's country of birth.

0:04:180:04:20

It was like a proper Japanese-style wedding. Kimono...

0:04:200:04:25

And our families did a swap, so my dad wore traditional Japanese attire

0:04:250:04:29

-for the wedding ceremony and Marie's dad wore English.

-Yeah.

0:04:290:04:32

Anthony, who's a banker, and Marie, who works in clinical research,

0:04:340:04:38

have lived in the London flat for five years and during that time

0:04:380:04:41

they've made the most of city life but now, as they approach

0:04:410:04:44

their mid-30s, their priorities have changed.

0:04:440:04:47

Living here when we were first living together, it was great.

0:04:470:04:50

We were going out a bit more

0:04:500:04:52

but perhaps now we're getting a little older and now that we're

0:04:520:04:55

married, we kind of use what Hoxton has to offer less and less.

0:04:550:04:59

We spend more time at home, so... Yeah.

0:04:590:05:04

London is really such a busy city

0:05:040:05:07

and I'm ready to have more quiet life.

0:05:070:05:10

Marie grew up in rural Japan and has always loved the countryside

0:05:120:05:15

but London-born Anthony is a recent convert.

0:05:150:05:18

Having spent time with my wife's family, home in Japan, it's just

0:05:180:05:22

so peaceful and tranquil where she lives, which is, like,

0:05:220:05:25

pretty much on the doorsteps of mountains and we've been away

0:05:250:05:28

for weekends in the countryside in London - it's so peaceful and nice

0:05:280:05:31

to wake up to greenery

0:05:310:05:33

as opposed to your concrete jungles of Central London,

0:05:330:05:36

so I think it would be very healthy and a nice way to live.

0:05:360:05:39

They've chosen Hertfordshire due to its proximity to the capital

0:05:410:05:44

and their jobs but they see this move as a much larger life plan.

0:05:440:05:48

We think it may be good for kids to grow up in a quiet area.

0:05:480:05:55

With a garden to play and run around in - we don't have at the moment...

0:05:550:05:58

Plenty of space, you know, let them play in the garden.

0:05:580:06:03

And outside space is top of their wish list as gardening is one

0:06:030:06:07

of the couple's many hobbies.

0:06:070:06:08

I enjoy looking after my orchids and flowers.

0:06:080:06:11

At the moment, we have a balcony and communal garden downstairs.

0:06:110:06:15

That's the only space that I can use for now,

0:06:150:06:18

so, yeah, hopefully I can get a real garden in the countryside.

0:06:180:06:24

We both enjoy cooking together.

0:06:240:06:28

We both enjoy cooking, both play tennis.

0:06:280:06:31

Marie is deceptively good at tennis. MARIE GIGGLES

0:06:310:06:34

Yeah, er, socialising with friends. Just, I guess, the standard.

0:06:340:06:38

Nothing out of the ordinary but, yeah, a good quality of life.

0:06:380:06:41

A nice life is important.

0:06:410:06:44

With the London property market booming and the option to

0:06:440:06:47

either rent or sell the Hoxton flat to finance the move,

0:06:470:06:50

Anthony and Marie are looking forward to starting

0:06:500:06:53

their married life together in the Hertfordshire countryside.

0:06:530:06:56

When we met, I already had this flat, so my wife moved in...

0:06:560:06:59

Well, at the time we got married, moved in with me.

0:06:590:07:02

This will be the first property that we're buying together

0:07:020:07:04

and, you know, hopefully the home that we'll have a family in,

0:07:040:07:08

so it's very exciting to be doing the next step in our lives together.

0:07:080:07:11

Yeah, very exciting.

0:07:110:07:13

In terms of location, Anthony would like to be within an hour's commute

0:07:170:07:20

from his office in Liverpool Street and Marie

0:07:200:07:23

an hour and a half from her job in West London.

0:07:230:07:26

But Hertfordshire has good transport links into the capital, so that

0:07:260:07:29

allows us to spread our property net across much of the county.

0:07:290:07:33

I'm meeting up with our buyers in the stately surroundings of

0:07:330:07:36

Ashridge House, near Berkhamsted, to go over their property wish list.

0:07:360:07:41

Well, Anthony and Marie, welcome to Hertfordshire

0:07:410:07:44

and we are spoiling you at the start of your escape to the country

0:07:440:07:47

with this place, Ashridge House. What do you think of that?

0:07:470:07:49

-Beautiful.

-Absolutely stunning.

0:07:490:07:51

Really the sort of thing I suppose you'd like to buy.

0:07:510:07:53

THEY LAUGH

0:07:530:07:54

We may talk about what we might achieve with your budget

0:07:540:07:57

a little later on.

0:07:570:07:58

So what are you looking for in your country life?

0:07:580:08:01

We look for... To have a nice, quiet life

0:08:010:08:04

and possibly to have a garden

0:08:040:08:08

and enjoy some green.

0:08:080:08:10

To enjoy some green and have a garden.

0:08:100:08:11

Well, this sort of thing would

0:08:110:08:13

-definitely do, Anthony.

-Yup, very much so.

0:08:130:08:15

We're looking for a nice period-style house.

0:08:150:08:17

We currently live in a new-build property, so kind of go flipping

0:08:170:08:20

to another style, to a period property

0:08:200:08:22

with enough rooms, hopefully, for

0:08:220:08:24

some of Marie's family if they want to come and visit us from Japan...

0:08:240:08:27

To be able to stay with us and, yeah, to give us a nice, rural lifestyle.

0:08:270:08:32

Now, give us an idea of how much money you're prepared to

0:08:320:08:34

spend on this new move?

0:08:340:08:36

In an ideal world,

0:08:360:08:37

if we can get... Our wish list would be... Around the £700,000 mark

0:08:370:08:41

would be the ideal that we'd like to get to and to get everything.

0:08:410:08:45

700,000 but could that go up a bit?

0:08:450:08:48

If push comes to shove, probably.

0:08:480:08:50

So potentially three quarters of a million?

0:08:500:08:52

A huge number but potentially.

0:08:530:08:55

Now, you've talked about having something with

0:08:550:08:57

a bit of character about it,

0:08:570:08:59

something with a bit of history,

0:08:590:09:01

do you have an image in your mind, Marie, of what your new house

0:09:010:09:05

should have?

0:09:050:09:06

Ideally three bedrooms and comes with garden and big kitchen.

0:09:070:09:12

And, Anthony, what about you? What's in your mind?

0:09:120:09:15

Two reception rooms ideally and, if possible, with a nice area

0:09:150:09:18

for Marie to look after her orchids - she's a keen grower.

0:09:180:09:21

Now, I was going to get onto the orchids

0:09:210:09:23

-cos I gather you've got over 100 of them...

-Yeah.

0:09:230:09:26

..in your flat, in the middle of the city, at the moment.

0:09:260:09:30

How many more orchids are you planning on getting

0:09:300:09:32

-in your new house?

-Probably too many.

0:09:320:09:34

Yeah, we'll have to worry about the budget for the orchids after

0:09:340:09:37

the budget for the house but we'll definitely have more

0:09:370:09:40

room for a few more orchids, I think, after the move, yes.

0:09:400:09:42

OK, all right. Well, we've got three, I think,

0:09:420:09:44

very interesting properties to show you, including the mystery house.

0:09:440:09:48

-OK.

-So we've got to get on with it.

0:09:480:09:50

-Let's go and house hunt. Come on.

-Sounds good.

0:09:500:09:52

For a very generous top budget of £750,000, our buyers would

0:09:540:09:59

like a period property with enough space to accommodate Marie's

0:09:590:10:02

visiting family and her growing collection of orchids.

0:10:020:10:06

The house should have at least three bedrooms

0:10:060:10:08

and a large country-style kitchen, as well as two reception rooms.

0:10:080:10:12

And they're keen to have a good-sized garden so Marie can begin

0:10:120:10:15

growing her own produce.

0:10:150:10:17

We've lined up a hearty selection of wonderful Hertfordshire homes

0:10:170:10:21

for Anthony and Marie to feast upon but they won't know the price

0:10:210:10:24

of each until the end of our visit.

0:10:240:10:27

And, with our mystery house, we'll see just how period

0:10:270:10:30

they're willing to go.

0:10:300:10:32

-So, can you teach me some Japanese this week?

-Yeah.

0:10:350:10:38

OK. Does my name have an equivalent in Japanese?

0:10:380:10:42

-Jules.

-Yeah.

0:10:420:10:44

Er...no.

0:10:440:10:47

It's just Jules, is it?

0:10:470:10:49

And what about the word for beautiful?

0:10:490:10:51

Beautiful is utsukushii.

0:10:510:10:54

-Utsukushii?

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:10:540:10:56

-Utsukushii.

-Utsukushii, yeah.

0:10:560:10:57

-Good pronunciation.

-Very good!

-Now, that's a word I hope we're

0:10:570:11:00

going to hear more of as we go

0:11:000:11:03

round our houses.

0:11:030:11:04

-Ah, OK.

-Ut-gushii.

-Utsukushii.

0:11:040:11:06

I'm going to look out for that one.

0:11:060:11:08

Our first property choice is in the village of Long Marston,

0:11:120:11:15

three and a half miles from Tring

0:11:150:11:18

and its 40-minute rail connection to London's Euston station.

0:11:180:11:21

Tring is a small market town which, in the late 19th century,

0:11:210:11:25

was home to the famous banker Lord Rothschild.

0:11:250:11:28

The town flourished after the construction of the nearby

0:11:280:11:31

Grand Junction Canal and later, the London and Birmingham Railway

0:11:310:11:35

and today, it's a popular commuter town.

0:11:350:11:38

Our first house is in the village of Long Marston on the outskirts

0:11:380:11:42

of Tring on a quiet country lane surrounded by farmland.

0:11:420:11:45

-OK, guys. Well, this is it, property number one.

-Wow.

0:11:470:11:51

The opposite of what we have currently

0:11:510:11:53

and exactly the kind of setting that we're looking for.

0:11:530:11:55

-It's not Central London, is it?

-Definitely not.

0:11:550:11:57

And you can probably smell it in the air as well.

0:11:570:11:59

-That is true as well.

-Somebody's muckspreading somewhere.

0:11:590:12:02

Beautiful, peaceful, perfect.

0:12:020:12:04

Now, what we've got for you here is a chunk of this

0:12:040:12:07

old converted-farm complex.

0:12:070:12:10

And you get that bit, the middle.

0:12:100:12:13

How does this compare to what we might find in Japan?

0:12:130:12:17

It's really different. Yeah. I look forward to have a look.

0:12:170:12:21

Well, let's see what you think of our barn then.

0:12:210:12:24

In its previous life, the house was an old cart-and-hay barn

0:12:240:12:27

and today, the carts have been replaced by car ports at either end.

0:12:270:12:31

Dating back to 1890, the Victorian barn has been renovated by

0:12:310:12:35

the current owners who have created a modern and versatile family home.

0:12:350:12:40

Let's start in here. There we are,

0:12:400:12:42

your first taste of a converted barn.

0:12:420:12:44

-Wow, very nicely done.

-Yeah?

0:12:440:12:47

-What's Marie thinking?

-Yeah, nice.

0:12:470:12:49

Opens up, of course, into the diner there

0:12:490:12:52

and the kitchen that's next to it,

0:12:520:12:53

-we'll have a look at that in a moment.

-OK.

0:12:530:12:55

But in terms of living rooms I suppose, really, you'd use

0:12:550:12:58

these two rooms together.

0:12:580:13:00

Yeah, very much so. It feels very lovely and warm.

0:13:000:13:03

Homely. It's very well done.

0:13:030:13:05

Yeah, nice ceiling as well.

0:13:050:13:07

Yeah.

0:13:070:13:09

As well as this main entertaining space, at the other end of

0:13:090:13:12

the barn there's a snug and a further room that's currently used

0:13:120:13:15

as a gym-cum-study but we're taking a closer peek at the dining room.

0:13:150:13:19

There we go.

0:13:190:13:21

This is really clever,

0:13:210:13:22

they've put this huge range of bifold doors in, which I think kind

0:13:220:13:26

of double the size or the feeling of space that you get in here.

0:13:260:13:29

I think the light you get in from the outside just makes

0:13:290:13:32

the room really great.

0:13:320:13:33

I think, in our heart of hearts, we were hoping for kind of like

0:13:330:13:36

a bigger kind of kitchen/dining area

0:13:360:13:38

all in one but, as a room, this is definitely a lovely room.

0:13:380:13:41

They've done a very nice renovation.

0:13:410:13:43

Well, here's the thing - because the kitchen is just next door

0:13:430:13:46

but this wall that separates it is just a stud wall,

0:13:460:13:49

-it's not load-bearing.

-Ah.

0:13:490:13:51

So you could remove that

0:13:510:13:53

and open this right up to have an enormous kitchen-diner.

0:13:530:13:57

Well, that's a completely different proposition.

0:13:570:14:00

I mean, it's very nice as it is.

0:14:000:14:02

As you can see, you've got the granite tops, you've got the cooker

0:14:020:14:05

and all the rest of it... Loads of storage.

0:14:050:14:07

There's also a very generous utility room just down the corridor,

0:14:070:14:10

so all the washing machines and all that stuff is out the way anyway.

0:14:100:14:14

So far, Marie, how are we doing?

0:14:140:14:16

What would you give house number one out of ten, say?

0:14:160:14:20

Out of ten, probably eight.

0:14:200:14:22

-Eight?

-Yeah.

-That's pretty good. Anthony?

0:14:220:14:25

Yeah, I think an eight, as well, with the potential of that to come down.

0:14:250:14:28

I think maybe, ideally, the lounge we would have liked a bit bigger

0:14:280:14:31

but with this space opening up and with that wall down, it could

0:14:310:14:33

-really just be something that could be workable.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:14:330:14:37

Both Anthony and Marie seem keen on doing a bit of work to open up

0:14:370:14:40

the ground floor of this property, which will give them

0:14:400:14:43

the space they're after.

0:14:430:14:45

Upstairs, in the eaves of the barn, there are five double bedrooms -

0:14:450:14:48

plenty of room for a future family.

0:14:480:14:50

Two of the bedrooms are separated by a dressing room

0:14:500:14:53

and run off each other,

0:14:530:14:55

creating a guest suite of rooms for when Marie's family come to stay.

0:14:550:14:59

At the other end of the house, another bedroom -

0:14:590:15:01

currently a study - is accessed by an independent staircase

0:15:010:15:04

from the dining room below.

0:15:040:15:07

And then there's the master.

0:15:070:15:10

And then this is your bit.

0:15:100:15:12

-Wow, that's lovely.

-Yeah? Very private.

0:15:120:15:16

-You've still got the light.

-Yeah.

-There's no view as such

0:15:160:15:19

but you've also got the en-suite through there, which is great.

0:15:190:15:21

Bath and shower as well.

0:15:210:15:24

How does this compare sizewise

0:15:240:15:25

to what you've got in London at the moment?

0:15:250:15:28

-More than...

-THEY ALL LAUGH

0:15:280:15:30

Incomparable.

0:15:300:15:32

OK, good. Well, at least we've ringed that change

0:15:320:15:34

from the city to the countryside.

0:15:340:15:37

How about the garden? You said you wanted green space,

0:15:370:15:39

somewhere for all those plant plans.

0:15:390:15:43

-A few more orchids maybe?

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

0:15:430:15:45

The garden to the rear of the barn is mainly lawn bordered by

0:15:460:15:49

shrubs and fruit trees and benefits from a summerhouse.

0:15:490:15:53

The quarter-of-an-acre plot backs directly onto a paddock with

0:15:530:15:56

views over open countryside.

0:15:560:15:58

You're the gardener, I think. Is this big enough?

0:15:590:16:02

Yes. Yes, definitely.

0:16:020:16:03

-Are you sure?

-Yeah.

0:16:030:16:05

I mean, we'd all love, you know, tens of acres, wouldn't we?

0:16:050:16:08

But the truth is if you're at work all week long you need

0:16:080:16:11

something that is going to be manageable and that you can keep.

0:16:110:16:15

Yeah, that's the key thing.

0:16:150:16:16

Something this size would be... I can do lawnmower duties

0:16:160:16:19

and then Marie can make it look beautiful.

0:16:190:16:21

There you go. Well, let's think about the price, then.

0:16:210:16:25

What do you think it's worth? Who's going to go first?

0:16:250:16:28

-Ladies first on this one, I think.

-Well, madam?

0:16:280:16:32

-Er, 730.

-£730,000 says your wife, sir?

0:16:320:16:37

I will try to be optimistic and go with... 715.

0:16:370:16:41

715, well... You're both right instinctively to go over seven

0:16:410:16:47

because this was on the market...

0:16:470:16:49

at £775,000.

0:16:490:16:53

However, that was a few months ago.

0:16:530:16:55

-It is now on the market for offers in excess of 700.

-OK.

0:16:550:17:01

Now, it could be £1 over, it could be £10,000 over

0:17:020:17:06

but you're certainly in a position to entertain this

0:17:060:17:10

if it's what you want and it's where you want it.

0:17:100:17:14

-It's certainly food for thought.

-Mm.

0:17:140:17:17

Well, there are a few other bits that you haven't fully explored yet,

0:17:170:17:20

so why don't you take a bit of time, have a good look around

0:17:200:17:23

and I will catch up with you a little bit later.

0:17:230:17:25

-Sounds good. Thank you.

-Off you go.

0:17:250:17:27

£50,000 below their maximum budget, our first property,

0:17:300:17:34

a characterful barn conversion, gives Anthony and Marie two more

0:17:340:17:38

bedrooms than they asked for,

0:17:380:17:40

the potential for a large kitchen-diner

0:17:400:17:42

and a manageable garden.

0:17:420:17:44

In terms of the commute, the village is an hour to

0:17:440:17:47

the City of London and an hour and 25 minutes to West London.

0:17:470:17:50

The size of the garden is good.

0:17:500:17:52

Also I like the kitchen as well.

0:17:520:17:55

And if we could take that centre wall off,

0:17:550:17:59

then we can have a bigger kitchen, so it's going to be good.

0:17:590:18:03

The things I like about property number one would be the nice

0:18:030:18:06

presence from the front of the house,

0:18:060:18:07

the nice garden at the back,

0:18:070:18:09

the lounge as you come into the property and the kitchen

0:18:090:18:13

and the diner.

0:18:130:18:15

Nothing that is a real no-no but I think, in our heads, or in my

0:18:150:18:18

head, still trying to run through how the layout of the upstairs

0:18:180:18:21

rooms - where the three bedrooms on the left-hand side of

0:18:210:18:24

the property seem to run into each other -

0:18:240:18:26

could be a little awkward for use

0:18:260:18:28

but... Not a no-no but it's something that needs to be thought over.

0:18:280:18:31

Well, one down, one more this afternoon

0:18:330:18:35

and then our mystery house tomorrow but we have got to get better

0:18:350:18:38

-than an eight out of ten, Marie, haven't we?

-Yes.

0:18:380:18:41

Like much of the UK, the health of Hertfordshire's countryside

0:18:450:18:48

can be determined by the number of butterflies fluttering around

0:18:480:18:51

its gardens and meadows but the British butterfly is in trouble.

0:18:510:18:56

The UK population is in decline, with numbers down some 25%.

0:18:560:19:01

Hertfordshire itself has been particularly hard hit, with 17

0:19:010:19:05

species lost in the last century.

0:19:050:19:08

To find out why but also how we can help the population,

0:19:080:19:11

I've come to Butterfly World -

0:19:110:19:13

a pioneering conservation project based near St Albans.

0:19:130:19:17

Since it started in 2008,

0:19:170:19:19

it has helped stem the decline in the county's butterfly numbers.

0:19:190:19:23

I'm meeting the project's lepidopterist, Louise Hawkins.

0:19:230:19:27

Well, Louise, it's not every day that I get to meet a lepidopterist.

0:19:270:19:30

-You have made the study of butterflies your life.

-Mh-hmm.

0:19:300:19:33

What got you into it in the first place?

0:19:330:19:35

To be honest, probably boredom on holiday at my grandparents'

0:19:350:19:39

in Cornwall.

0:19:390:19:41

Nothing else to do other than going out into fields

0:19:410:19:43

and wandering around in the woodland looking for butterflies.

0:19:430:19:46

How important are butterflies to our environment, to the ecosystem?

0:19:460:19:51

They're hugely important. They're a vital part of the food chain.

0:19:510:19:55

There's lots of birds and bats

0:19:550:19:57

that are very dependent on butterflies and moths.

0:19:570:20:00

We're not doing a great job of looking after them, are we?

0:20:000:20:03

We're not, unfortunately, not at the moment.

0:20:030:20:06

I think cos of huge demands on our land, changes in how we use our land,

0:20:060:20:10

the habitat's become very fragmented.

0:20:100:20:13

It's been changed into development, carved up by motorways

0:20:130:20:18

and populations have become isolated.

0:20:180:20:20

Now, those of us lucky enough to have a garden

0:20:200:20:23

can all do our bit to help, and I gather you've got some top tips

0:20:230:20:25

-as to how we can all get involved...

-We have.

0:20:250:20:27

..in helping to create the perfect environment...

0:20:270:20:29

-Yes.

-..for butterflies.

0:20:290:20:30

Yes, we have. I can show you some perfect examples.

0:20:300:20:33

Brilliant. After you.

0:20:330:20:35

'To help reverse the decline, the conservation project

0:20:350:20:39

'has created the ideal habitat in which the butterflies can thrive -

0:20:390:20:43

'a unique wild flower meadow, which provides a plentiful supply

0:20:430:20:46

'of nectar for both butterflies and insects.'

0:20:460:20:49

This is lovely, it's full of colour, isn't it?

0:20:490:20:51

Yes, there's lots of flowers here that butterflies really like.

0:20:510:20:55

We've got scabious, we've got knapweed,

0:20:550:20:58

we've got marjoram, and, of course, we've got the butterfly bush as well.

0:20:580:21:02

That, I suppose, is one of the most prolific plants

0:21:020:21:04

-that we see across the UK...

-Yeah.

0:21:040:21:07

..but a lot of people will cut that down as a weed.

0:21:070:21:09

They do indeed, yeah.

0:21:090:21:10

It's very important to leave some of these - what we consider -

0:21:100:21:13

weed plants in your garden

0:21:130:21:15

so that there's lots of nectar for butterflies.

0:21:150:21:18

But as you can see, a wild garden can still be just as beautiful.

0:21:180:21:21

'While adult butterflies depend on nectar to survive,

0:21:210:21:25

'caterpillars on the other hand need food plants

0:21:250:21:28

'such as nettles and grasses,

0:21:280:21:29

'so it's good to leave at least a portion of the garden untended.'

0:21:290:21:32

Now, for all the colour and all the beauty of it,

0:21:340:21:36

one thing seems to me to be missing.

0:21:360:21:40

Where are the butterflies?

0:21:400:21:41

Well, it is rather cold and damp today,

0:21:410:21:43

so they will be in there roosting somewhere nice and warm.

0:21:430:21:46

We've got a lovely, warm, tropical butterfly house,

0:21:460:21:49

so we can go and see some lovely, spectacular butterflies.

0:21:490:21:51

-And it won't be raining?

-No.

0:21:510:21:52

-Great. Right.

-HE LAUGHS

0:21:520:21:54

'It's not just native species

0:21:540:21:56

'that the project has taken under its wing.

0:21:560:21:59

'The Tropical Butterfly House

0:21:590:22:01

'is home to hundreds of foreign butterflies

0:22:010:22:04

'as well as a number of quail, who act as a pest deterrent -

0:22:040:22:07

'a kind of butterfly bodyguard.'

0:22:070:22:09

What's that?!

0:22:090:22:11

That is an owl butterfly.

0:22:110:22:12

That's one of the largest ones you'll find in the Butterfly House

0:22:120:22:15

and they're called owl butterflies

0:22:150:22:17

because they've got eye spots on each wing

0:22:170:22:19

that when they open them up, they look like an owl's face.

0:22:190:22:22

That is without a doubt the biggest butterfly I have ever seen.

0:22:220:22:26

I mean, I love the noise of the quail in here.

0:22:260:22:29

They control the number of spiders, and spiders are the number one enemy

0:22:290:22:33

of a butterfly when they get caught up in the cobwebs.

0:22:330:22:36

Ah, of course. Yeah.

0:22:360:22:37

And how many butterflies then are living in here at the moment?

0:22:370:22:40

There's probably between 400 and 500 in here at the moment.

0:22:400:22:44

-And how many different species?

-Around 30 or 40 different species.

0:22:440:22:47

But this is a wonderful environment

0:22:470:22:49

to introduce people to the butterfly.

0:22:490:22:52

Are we looking at a brighter future?

0:22:520:22:54

I think so, yes.

0:22:540:22:56

If we continue to educate our children

0:22:560:22:58

about the importance of butterflies

0:22:580:23:00

and if we concentrate our conservation efforts

0:23:000:23:03

in getting a balance between development and habitat,

0:23:030:23:06

then I don't see why not.

0:23:060:23:07

It seems we can all do our bit to try and help the British butterfly

0:23:070:23:12

by creating conditions for them to thrive in our own back gardens.

0:23:120:23:15

But, for now, we need to find a rural haven for Anthony and Marie,

0:23:150:23:19

so it's back to the house hunt.

0:23:190:23:21

For our second offering, we're heading northeast.

0:23:260:23:28

We're actually crossing over the border into Bedfordshire

0:23:280:23:31

to the hamlet of How End,

0:23:310:23:33

just outside the small market town of Ampthill.

0:23:330:23:36

With an hour's journey

0:23:360:23:37

to London's Moorgate,

0:23:370:23:39

which is close to Anthony's office,

0:23:390:23:40

and just under an hour and a half for Marie,

0:23:400:23:42

Ampthill is a well-connected, vibrant Georgian market town.

0:23:420:23:46

Our second house is a few miles north of it,

0:23:460:23:49

but situated in a quiet rural setting

0:23:490:23:51

surrounded by fields and hedgerows.

0:23:510:23:54

OK, Marie, what do you think of that one?

0:23:540:23:56

-Wow. Nice. Big.

-SHE CHUCKLES

0:23:560:23:59

It is big, actually.

0:23:590:24:01

The bit we're looking at here is a modern extension...

0:24:010:24:04

ANTHONY AND MARIE: Mm.

0:24:040:24:05

..to an original house, which was built in 1888,

0:24:050:24:09

so it's late Victorian...

0:24:090:24:11

Similar age, really, to property number one,

0:24:110:24:14

but this one has been doubled in size over the last few years.

0:24:140:24:17

Anthony, what are your first thoughts?

0:24:170:24:19

Yeah, very cute and quaint and doesn't look modern at all.

0:24:190:24:22

So, yeah, very promising from the outside.

0:24:220:24:24

-I'm very conscious of this character that you're looking for.

-Yeah.

0:24:240:24:27

All right? But with this one, we've certainly gone for size.

0:24:270:24:30

To be honest with you,

0:24:300:24:31

it's very difficult to judge this from the outside.

0:24:310:24:33

The only way to really understand it, I think, is to get inside.

0:24:330:24:36

-Mm.

-Yeah?

-OK. Sounds good.

0:24:360:24:37

Come on.

0:24:370:24:39

'Well, that's a more upbeat reaction to our second house.

0:24:390:24:41

'It's an interesting fusion between old and new,

0:24:410:24:44

'retaining fine original features throughout.'

0:24:440:24:47

We'll start in here.

0:24:470:24:49

Wow.

0:24:500:24:52

"Wow"! That's good! Look at your face!

0:24:520:24:54

ALL LAUGH Wow.

0:24:540:24:56

Do you remember when we were speaking in the car earlier

0:24:560:24:58

and I asked you what the Japanese for beautiful was?

0:24:580:25:01

-Ah, "utsukushii".

-Utsukushii?

0:25:010:25:03

-Yeah.

-Utsukushii.

-OK, so, maybe it's that.

0:25:030:25:06

-Mmm.

-Very much so. Wow, that is stunning.

0:25:060:25:08

-Yeah?

-Speechless.

-Yeah.

0:25:080:25:10

-You're speechless? This is the biggest smile...

-Yeah.

0:25:100:25:12

-..we've seen.

-Mmm.

0:25:120:25:13

The flooring is nice, I like that beam. Just everything.

0:25:130:25:16

-Yeah.

-It's really, really lovely.

-Well, the beam is interesting.

0:25:160:25:19

I said to you earlier that the house was extended.

0:25:190:25:21

That beam represents the old external wall of the property,

0:25:210:25:24

so that was as far as it came

0:25:240:25:26

and everything we're standing in now is the new addition.

0:25:260:25:29

The most recent addition is that fabulous garden room there,

0:25:290:25:32

which projects out into the garden.

0:25:320:25:34

-Ten out of ten for a first impression.

-Mm, mm.

0:25:340:25:36

Great. I mean, you've got a fantastic family

0:25:360:25:39

and entertaining area here too.

0:25:390:25:40

Across the corridor, there is a living room

0:25:400:25:43

with a huge open, working fireplace in it.

0:25:430:25:45

Oh, wow.

0:25:450:25:46

-Behind me, here, you've also got a wood burner.

-Oh.

0:25:460:25:48

Which will keep you nice and warm.

0:25:480:25:50

So you've got lots of entertaining space and this wonderful kitchen,

0:25:500:25:53

and beyond it...is the dining room.

0:25:530:25:56

-Mm!

-Wow.

-Come and have a look.

0:25:560:25:58

'As well as our top-scoring entertaining space,

0:25:590:26:02

'the ground floor also features

0:26:020:26:03

'a huge walk-in larder and a utility room,

0:26:030:26:06

'both of which are just off the dining room.'

0:26:060:26:08

-Wow.

-Wow, lovely space as well.

0:26:080:26:10

-Lovely, yeah.

-Wow.

0:26:100:26:12

The thing I like about this house is that it has different zones -

0:26:120:26:15

the garden room, the kitchen and the dining room,

0:26:150:26:17

-but it all flows together, it's all linked...

-Mm.

0:26:170:26:20

..which, again, just has this nice sort of feel to it.

0:26:200:26:24

Our last house, you said it was eight out of ten.

0:26:240:26:28

-Is this one a bit higher?

-Yeah.

-ALL LAUGH

0:26:280:26:32

-Anthony?

-Unquestionably. Yeah, for me, it's a ten as we stand now.

0:26:320:26:36

-It's ten out of ten.

-Brilliant. OK. Well, let's hope that continues.

0:26:360:26:39

'And I'm confident it will

0:26:390:26:41

'as upstairs there are four good-size bedrooms,

0:26:410:26:44

'but with all the rooms arranged off a central landing,

0:26:440:26:47

'it's a more conventional layout than our first property.

0:26:470:26:49

'Two of the bedrooms are en suite, including a lovely guest suite

0:26:490:26:53

'for visiting family.

0:26:530:26:55

'There's also a fantastic family bathroom with roll-top bath,

0:26:550:26:58

'which just leaves Anthony and Marie's bedroom.'

0:26:580:27:02

-Wow. Amazing.

-Yeah, another beautiful room.

0:27:020:27:05

-I mean, it is beautifully...

-Nonstop surprises.

0:27:050:27:08

..furnished, to be fair.

0:27:080:27:10

-That is a super king-size bed, so...

-Yeah.

0:27:100:27:12

But it is beautifully done, has a fantastic en suite as well,

0:27:120:27:16

and in terms of accommodation up here,

0:27:160:27:18

do you think there's enough space for people to come and stay here?

0:27:180:27:21

-Mm.

-Yeah, I think without question.

0:27:210:27:23

-Ideally we wanted a minimum of three, and four would be plenty.

-Mm.

0:27:230:27:27

-Good. Still ten out of ten?

-Yeah.

-SHE LAUGHS

0:27:270:27:30

-Good. Right. Shall we go to the garden?

-Sounds good.

0:27:300:27:34

-Talk about the price?

-JULES CHUCKLES

0:27:340:27:36

Extending to the side of the property,

0:27:390:27:40

the gardens are enclosed and private

0:27:400:27:43

thanks to the mature borders and trees surrounding the lawn.

0:27:430:27:45

There's also a large decked area suitable for entertaining.

0:27:450:27:48

Come over here because this really is where you get a sense

0:27:480:27:52

of the old and the new.

0:27:520:27:54

There's the 1888 bit...

0:27:570:27:59

And there's the modern part...

0:28:000:28:02

with that extension.

0:28:020:28:03

In terms of garden... the green bit, this is it.

0:28:030:28:07

There is a little courtyard garden

0:28:070:28:09

that separates the house from the double garage,

0:28:090:28:12

but in terms of your gardening ambitions,

0:28:120:28:15

would this area be big enough?

0:28:150:28:16

-Mm, yeah.

-MARIE LAUGHS

0:28:160:28:18

-You sure?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:28:180:28:20

If I could give you the keys, would you like me to do that?

0:28:200:28:23

If we could have the keys, yeah, without question.

0:28:240:28:26

ALL LAUGH

0:28:260:28:28

Well, how much would the keys to this place cost you?

0:28:280:28:31

-You went first last time...

-Mm-hm.

0:28:310:28:34

..Marie, so, Anthony?

0:28:340:28:35

-I'm going to go for an optimistic 740.

-740.

0:28:360:28:40

Um... 750.

0:28:410:28:44

-750.

-Mm-hm.

0:28:440:28:46

Now, if it were 740 or indeed 750,

0:28:470:28:49

-it would absolutely push your budget to the limit, wouldn't it?

-Mm.

0:28:490:28:53

-It's on the market at 665.

-Wow.

0:28:530:28:57

JULES AND MARIE LAUGH

0:28:590:29:01

Wow, that was a properly speechless open-mouthed "wow"!

0:29:010:29:04

-Yeah, now I'm speechless.

-Wow.

0:29:040:29:06

Really?

0:29:060:29:08

-Yeah.

-Ah...

0:29:080:29:09

That is very pleasantly surprising. JULES LAUGHS

0:29:090:29:12

Well, given that you love it so much,

0:29:120:29:13

I think it's the icing on the cake, isn't it?

0:29:130:29:15

-Yeah! I think speechless again, yeah. Stunning.

-Wow.

0:29:150:29:19

Well, look, although you have seen most of it,

0:29:190:29:21

I think we should give you a bit more time to indulge it,

0:29:210:29:24

to soak up the atmosphere of property number two

0:29:240:29:26

and maybe start planning.

0:29:260:29:29

-Maybe a move is afoot. Who knows?

-MARIE LAUGHS

0:29:290:29:31

-Right then, off you go. I will catch you later on.

-Thank you.

0:29:310:29:35

Well under their maximum budget by nearly £100,000,

0:29:360:29:40

our second house is original Victorian,

0:29:400:29:43

but has been recently extended and modernised.

0:29:430:29:46

It gives our buyers the large kitchen and reception space

0:29:460:29:48

they were after,

0:29:480:29:50

one more bedroom than they asked for and a manageable garden.

0:29:500:29:53

Well, I can't find anything I don't like...

0:29:530:29:57

-SHE LAUGHS

-..so that's a good sign!

0:29:570:29:59

I could imagine to live in this house

0:29:590:30:03

and I hope Anthony is thinking the same.

0:30:030:30:07

Wow, what not to like?

0:30:070:30:09

Stunning lounge area, kitchen area, dining area, sunroom,

0:30:090:30:13

four big bedrooms...

0:30:130:30:14

I mean, just perfect, absolutely perfect.

0:30:140:30:16

Yeah, I think unquestionably, this is a place that I could see

0:30:160:30:19

myself living with my wife and if one day we have a family,

0:30:190:30:22

it'd be a lovely place to have a family

0:30:220:30:24

and plenty of room for Marie's family to come and visit,

0:30:240:30:26

or friends to come over and spend the night

0:30:260:30:28

if they were to come for a day, whatever.

0:30:280:30:30

So, yeah, absolutely, it's a place we could see as our home.

0:30:300:30:34

You know, house-hunting can be quite a tiring business

0:30:340:30:36

despite what you might think...

0:30:360:30:39

-Whay! How are we doing?

-Very good, thank you.

0:30:390:30:41

Good to be outside potentially what'd be our new front door.

0:30:410:30:44

Well, is it going to be your new front door, I wonder?

0:30:440:30:47

We have got one more to see tomorrow, our mystery house,

0:30:470:30:49

so don't jump the gun just yet, but I think it's looking good.

0:30:490:30:53

-Yeah.

-Brilliant.

0:30:530:30:55

Come on, then, let's have a celebratory evening drink.

0:30:550:30:57

Sounds good.

0:30:570:30:59

It's the start of our second day of property shopping

0:31:060:31:09

here in Hertfordshire,

0:31:090:31:10

and with a very healthy budget of £750,000,

0:31:100:31:14

we're helping newlywed professionals -

0:31:140:31:16

Anthony and Marie from London -

0:31:160:31:18

find a family house in the Home Counties.

0:31:180:31:20

Still to come - our mystery option raises the game.

0:31:200:31:23

-Never been in a room as beautiful as this.

-Mm!

0:31:240:31:26

Just stunning. MARIE CHUCKLES

0:31:260:31:28

'But the price comes as a shock.'

0:31:280:31:30

-Mmm!

-Wow. Wow, wow, wow.

0:31:300:31:33

Well, unfortunately, it does look as if our second day of house-hunting

0:31:350:31:39

could be somewhat wetter than the first,

0:31:390:31:41

but there is no better feeling than ending day one on a high,

0:31:410:31:45

which we certainly managed to do.

0:31:450:31:47

But I always get very excited when I'm about to show our buyers

0:31:470:31:50

a mystery house that could thrill them even more

0:31:500:31:53

and if they like what they've seen so far,

0:31:530:31:55

just you wait till they see this one.

0:31:550:31:58

Our mystery house is back

0:31:590:32:01

over the border in Hertfordshire

0:32:010:32:02

and we're on the way to the village of Brent Pelham.

0:32:020:32:05

The closest station for trains to London is Bishop's Stortford -

0:32:050:32:08

a half hour drive away -

0:32:080:32:10

and then it's an average 45-minute train ride into Liverpool Street,

0:32:100:32:13

so we're pushing our buyers on the commuting time.

0:32:130:32:16

The village itself is made up of a scattering of pretty thatched

0:32:160:32:19

and characterful houses

0:32:190:32:21

and Brent Pelham is a quiet, sought-after location.

0:32:210:32:23

But it wasn't always so peaceful.

0:32:240:32:27

Just outside the local church are the medieval stocks,

0:32:270:32:30

which could accommodate up to three people at once.

0:32:300:32:33

Despite adding around 20 minutes to their journey into London,

0:32:330:32:36

our final property certainly delivers on age and history.

0:32:360:32:40

Now, look at this!

0:32:400:32:41

Wow, wow, wow. JULES CHUCKLES

0:32:430:32:45

Come over here.

0:32:450:32:46

-What?!

-Wow. MARIE LAUGHS

0:32:480:32:50

-Oh!

-That is as traditional as traditional gets.

0:32:500:32:54

-That is fantastic.

-Lovely.

0:32:540:32:55

-What's the magic word?

-Utsukushii.

0:32:550:32:57

Utsukushii, yeah, it's beautiful, isn't it?

0:32:570:32:59

Now, on this one, we are stepping back in time.

0:32:590:33:02

-Our first two properties were Victorian.

-Mm-hm.

0:33:020:33:06

-This one was built around about 1500 or so.

-Mm...

-Wow.

0:33:060:33:11

-MARIE LAUGHS

-So, it's 400 to 500 years old

0:33:110:33:14

and packed full of history and character

0:33:140:33:17

in a very genuine way.

0:33:170:33:19

-Mm.

-I know when we started out you were really hoping for that.

0:33:190:33:23

We certainly got there, I think, with our second property,

0:33:230:33:26

albeit in a modern way,

0:33:260:33:28

but this absolutely is the real thing, Anthony.

0:33:280:33:31

-Mm.

-Wow, it's stunning. Absolutely magical.

0:33:310:33:33

Yeah? Let's see what you think of the inside. Come on.

0:33:330:33:36

'So our mystery house is a 16th-century thatched property -

0:33:360:33:40

'originally three workers' cottages that have been knocked into one

0:33:400:33:43

'to create a beautiful family home.'

0:33:430:33:46

Right, you two, let's start in here then.

0:33:460:33:49

-Oh, wow.

-Mmm.

0:33:500:33:51

-That is very cute.

-Cute, yes.

0:33:510:33:54

-Yeah?

-That is splendid.

-Yeah.

0:33:550:33:57

There's a pantry through there

0:33:570:33:58

and also the main family bathroom is down there.

0:33:580:34:01

-OK.

-So it's got a slightly unconventional layout in that sense,

0:34:010:34:04

-but bath and shower - beautifully done.

-Mm.

0:34:040:34:07

But, yeah, your classic cottage kitchen.

0:34:070:34:11

Oil-fired range over there.

0:34:110:34:14

This isn't the only dining area,

0:34:140:34:16

but in terms of the kitchen - would it be big enough for you?

0:34:160:34:19

-Yeah, yeah. I think so.

-Yeah, I think definitely workable.

0:34:190:34:21

I mean, yeah, just a lovely room...

0:34:210:34:23

-Mm.

-Yeah.

-..steeped in history.

0:34:230:34:25

-Mm.

-Just fantastic.

0:34:250:34:26

Well, if you like old style, this place is full of it.

0:34:260:34:29

Have a look at the dining end.

0:34:290:34:30

This is the dining room itself.

0:34:300:34:32

-Wow! Oh, my... Wow!

-Wow!

-MARIE LAUGHS

0:34:320:34:36

-Oh!

-"Oh, my wow"!

-JULES LAUGHS

0:34:360:34:39

-Wow.

-That is just absolutely stunning.

0:34:390:34:42

-Wow.

-This room is full of character. Just unbelievable.

0:34:420:34:45

-Mm, yeah.

-The beams, the ceilings, the fireplace...

0:34:450:34:48

-Wow.

-But this is lovely too.

0:34:490:34:51

Can you see on this piece of wood, these little marks?

0:34:510:34:53

-These are the carpenter's marks...

-Mm.

0:34:530:34:55

..from when it was built.

0:34:550:34:57

So they would assemble the frame of the building on the ground,

0:34:570:35:00

get all the joints to fit and then they had to label them

0:35:000:35:03

to know which one went where.

0:35:030:35:04

So X-X goes there.

0:35:040:35:06

Just beautiful. JULES LAUGHS

0:35:060:35:08

Beautiful, yeah.

0:35:080:35:09

I've never been in a room as beautiful as this in a home.

0:35:090:35:11

-Mm.

-This is just stunning.

0:35:110:35:13

Well, let's see what you think of the living room

0:35:130:35:15

cos that's through here.

0:35:150:35:16

We step down these...two steps.

0:35:170:35:19

-Look how wide that wall is next to the chimneybreast.

-Wow.

0:35:190:35:22

And then you get into here.

0:35:220:35:24

-Oh, wow.

-Oh!

0:35:260:35:27

-Just so cosy, just so homely, just so...

-Mm.

0:35:270:35:30

..just fantastic.

0:35:300:35:32

Another wood burner for you. Uh, again, more beams, more history.

0:35:320:35:36

It's so tastefully done and so beautifully done.

0:35:370:35:40

It's everywhere, so although there's lots of dark wood,

0:35:400:35:43

-it just doesn't feel dark at all, it's just lovely.

-Mm.

0:35:430:35:46

-I think you would be happy here.

-Mm, definitely, yeah.

0:35:460:35:49

Right then, let's go upstairs. Follow me.

0:35:490:35:52

'Our buyers are clearly captivated by the charms

0:35:530:35:56

'of this characterful cottage.

0:35:560:35:58

'Upstairs there are three bedrooms with exposed timbers throughout.

0:35:580:36:02

'One, currently set up as a twin, would make a cosy guest room.

0:36:020:36:06

'Another of the bedrooms has been converted into a study

0:36:060:36:08

'and is accessed by its own staircase from the kitchen below,

0:36:080:36:11

'which just leaves the largest room for Anthony and Marie to inspect.'

0:36:110:36:16

And then this is the master. Come on in.

0:36:160:36:18

Wow. Again, wow. MARIE AND JULES LAUGH

0:36:180:36:22

-I love that dormer window.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:36:220:36:24

-Actually, the way it projects out with all the beams.

-Mm.

0:36:240:36:27

-I mean, I know you asked for three bedrooms...

-Yeah.

0:36:270:36:29

Our first two properties had more than three, this one has just three.

0:36:290:36:33

The other thing is that it doesn't have

0:36:330:36:35

the family bathroom on this floor.

0:36:350:36:37

It's downstairs next to the kitchen.

0:36:370:36:38

But you do have a loo next door.

0:36:380:36:40

-Yeah, that's perfectly fine.

-That's fine.

0:36:400:36:42

Just through there. That's the only compromise.

0:36:420:36:44

It's the only fault, if it is a fault, that I can find with this.

0:36:440:36:48

I mean, I'll call it a quirk rather than a fault.

0:36:480:36:50

Excellent. I like quirks. Quirks are easier to deal with.

0:36:500:36:53

They're much more forgivable than faults.

0:36:530:36:56

I think the thing to do now is to go back out

0:36:560:36:58

-into that gorgeous garden...

-Mm.

0:36:580:37:00

..and I would suggest that you start thinking about how much this one is.

0:37:000:37:04

ANTHONY AND MARIE LAUGH

0:37:040:37:05

-Yes!

-We can try. JULES LAUGHS

0:37:050:37:09

Come with me.

0:37:090:37:10

'The secluded landscaped garden provides several different areas,

0:37:100:37:14

'including the main lawn - which features a summerhouse -

0:37:140:37:17

'lots of mature hedging, and a separate paved area,

0:37:170:37:20

'which could make an excellent spot for summer socialising.'

0:37:200:37:23

So, that's it. That's what our mystery house has to offer.

0:37:240:37:27

MARIE LAUGHS

0:37:270:37:28

You know what's coming now, don't you? Yeah!

0:37:280:37:31

-How much, Marie...

-Mmm...

0:37:310:37:34

..do you think our mystery house... is on the market for?

0:37:340:37:37

I think...

0:37:380:37:39

-..680?

-680, yeah?

0:37:420:37:44

No idea.

0:37:450:37:46

I mean, absolutely stunning, but just by virtue of the fact

0:37:460:37:49

that it's a bit of a journey from the station,

0:37:490:37:51

I'm going to keep it under 700 as well and go for 690.

0:37:510:37:54

-But I've absolutely no idea.

-690.

0:37:540:37:56

-It has kind of flummoxed you a bit, hasn't it, this one?

-Yeah.

0:37:560:37:59

It's on the market for £595,000.

0:37:590:38:03

-Wow!

-Really?

-JULES LAUGHS

0:38:030:38:05

Wow, wow, wow.

0:38:050:38:07

Yeah? That's quite a saving from your projected £700,000 spend.

0:38:070:38:11

-That's really good, yeah.

-Yeah.

0:38:110:38:12

Right then, come on, let's go. You're in charge of the brolly.

0:38:120:38:15

-Thank you.

-After you.

0:38:150:38:16

Well under their top budget by £155,000,

0:38:210:38:25

our mystery house goes to show you don't need to blow all your money

0:38:250:38:28

to get what you want.

0:38:280:38:30

It's a 16th-century thatched cottage

0:38:300:38:32

with oodles of character and history.

0:38:320:38:34

It comes with three bedrooms and a country-style kitchen.

0:38:340:38:37

The only downside is the lack of an upstairs bathroom

0:38:370:38:40

and it's a 20 minute longer commute into London

0:38:400:38:43

than they originally wanted.

0:38:430:38:45

For us, this is kind of the real country deal

0:38:450:38:47

that we were looking for.

0:38:470:38:49

It's just the absolute dream picturesque home.

0:38:490:38:52

We were looking for the complete country lifestyle

0:38:520:38:54

and I can't imagine a place

0:38:540:38:56

that would give us that opportunity more than a place like this.

0:38:560:38:59

It's just fantastic.

0:38:590:39:00

Well, I wasn't expecting to see this nice character old house,

0:39:000:39:06

and I think I really like this.

0:39:060:39:09

I can see myself living in this place and enjoying gardening

0:39:090:39:15

and maybe having fun with Anthony if we're cooking.

0:39:150:39:19

Have a look at this - a chair grown from box.

0:39:200:39:23

I just absolutely love it. Look at this. Have you spotted it yet?

0:39:230:39:26

Oh, gosh. Wow!

0:39:260:39:28

I haven't tried sitting on it, but I think it's so quirky

0:39:280:39:32

-and so imaginative.

-Mm.

0:39:320:39:34

So, that's it. House tours are over.

0:39:340:39:36

-You've got lots to think about, I think.

-Indeed, indeed.

-Yeah.

0:39:360:39:39

-But it's been a good week.

-It's been a fantastic week.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:39:390:39:42

Have we found you a home yet, I wonder?

0:39:420:39:44

-Don't tell me yet!

-ALL LAUGH

0:39:440:39:46

-Off you go, Anthony.

-Thank you.

0:39:460:39:47

Let's get in the car.

0:39:470:39:48

'So, after leaving Anthony and Marie a while to mull over their options,

0:39:510:39:55

'it's time to catch up with them

0:39:550:39:56

'to find out whether any of the properties we've shown our couple

0:39:560:39:59

'have inspired them enough to make the next move.'

0:39:590:40:02

Well, guys, here we are at the end of your escape to the country.

0:40:030:40:06

It does race by, doesn't it?

0:40:060:40:08

-It really, really does.

-Have we managed to do it, Anthony?

0:40:080:40:12

Yeah, I think we're pretty close.

0:40:120:40:13

I think we know which one is definitely our favourite.

0:40:130:40:16

Now, let me take a guess, Marie.

0:40:160:40:18

Is your favourite by any chance...

0:40:180:40:20

the mystery house?

0:40:200:40:22

-Yes.

-Yes.

-ALL LAUGH

0:40:220:40:24

Now, it's interesting that

0:40:240:40:26

because at the end of yesterday, property two was top of your list.

0:40:260:40:30

A much more modern renovation.

0:40:300:40:32

What did you like about property two?

0:40:320:40:34

-As we walked through the door...

-Mm.

0:40:340:40:36

..and that lounge area to the kitchen area to a dining area

0:40:360:40:40

is nothing short of magical and we are completely smitten by that.

0:40:400:40:43

And then we got to the mystery house and the setting is surreal,

0:40:430:40:47

it's idyllic, it's picture postcard.

0:40:470:40:49

-Mm.

-From the outside, the inside, the kitchen, the two lounges,

0:40:490:40:53

-the bedrooms, it's just the dream that we were looking for...

-Yeah.

0:40:530:40:56

..for a country retreat.

0:40:560:40:58

What happens next? Because you're ready to move, more or less,

0:40:580:41:01

aren't you?

0:41:010:41:02

Yeah, we think we're pretty much ready to move,

0:41:020:41:04

so now we just need to research the specific area that the house is in a bit more.

0:41:040:41:07

Definitely come back for a second and possible further viewings,

0:41:070:41:10

and as we see things today,

0:41:100:41:11

it's something that we could definitely see as a home

0:41:110:41:14

-that we could live in ourselves and raise a family.

-Mm.

0:41:140:41:17

So, for the city boy from London,

0:41:170:41:19

this is going to be quite a big change for you.

0:41:190:41:21

Yeah, I mean, it's such a wonderful place to live a life outside of work,

0:41:210:41:25

in the evenings and on the weekends,

0:41:250:41:27

and although maybe a bit of a journey to a station,

0:41:270:41:29

it's a quick train ride in,

0:41:290:41:31

so within the kind of target we had of an hour or so to Liverpool Street.

0:41:310:41:35

So, yeah, not daunted by that by any means.

0:41:350:41:37

And for the country girl who grew up in the mountains of Japan,

0:41:370:41:41

now you're potentially moving

0:41:410:41:43

to the English countryside in Hertfordshire,

0:41:430:41:45

how do you feel about that prospect?

0:41:450:41:48

I'm feeling so excited to start a new life,

0:41:480:41:50

and, yeah, hopefully it will go OK.

0:41:500:41:53

And it's been a busy few weeks for you both.

0:41:530:41:57

You've gotten married. You've come on Escape To The Country

0:41:570:41:59

and now hopefully you've got a new home to look forward to.

0:41:590:42:02

You probably need to go home and catch your breath.

0:42:020:42:05

-Yeah.

-Definitely. ALL LAUGH

0:42:050:42:07

But it's been a lot of fun.

0:42:070:42:09

A real pleasure to meet you both, and go back,

0:42:090:42:11

have another look at our mystery house,

0:42:110:42:13

and as ever, do let us know how you get on.

0:42:130:42:16

Best of luck.

0:42:160:42:18

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

0:42:180:42:19

Well, hopefully now Anthony and Marie are well on their way

0:42:230:42:26

to realising their dream of a rural life here in Hertfordshire,

0:42:260:42:30

a county which not everybody would automatically associate

0:42:300:42:33

with being classic Escape To The Country territory,

0:42:330:42:36

but let's face it -

0:42:360:42:37

if Jane Austen was prepared to set Pride And Prejudice here,

0:42:370:42:40

and it was good enough for the likes of Mr Darcy and the Bennets,

0:42:400:42:43

well then, quite frankly, it's good enough for me.

0:42:430:42:45

I'll see you next time.

0:42:450:42:47

Anthony and Marie returned

0:42:480:42:49

for a second viewing of the mystery property,

0:42:490:42:52

and although they loved the house,

0:42:520:42:53

they concluded that the drive to the station was too far.

0:42:530:42:56

Their Hertfordshire property search continues.

0:42:560:42:59
