This beautiful engine is a 1927 Foster Showman's tractor

0:00:040:00:09

and this corner of the country is home to what's believed to be

0:00:090:00:12

the world's largest collection of traction engines and roadrollers.

0:00:120:00:17

But where am I?

0:00:170:00:18

And how did one local boy's love of steam grow so big?

0:00:180:00:22

Find out in just a minute.

0:00:220:00:23

TRACTOR HISSES, RUMBLES AND SQUEAKS

0:00:230:00:26

'Today's escape is all about horses for courses.'

0:00:440:00:47

Ta-da!

0:00:470:00:49

MAN LAUGHS

0:00:490:00:51

Stables underneath the accommodation.

0:00:510:00:53

LAUGHTER

0:00:530:00:55

-Absolutely ideal.

-Yeah.

0:00:550:00:57

It's fantastic.

0:00:570:00:58

'But will any of our houses be first past the post?'

0:00:580:01:01

Could you see yourself living here?

0:01:010:01:04

-I think so.

-Yeah, I definitely think so.

0:01:040:01:06

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:01:060:01:08

ENGINE RUMBLES

0:01:080:01:10

Despite what it says up there on the canopy,

0:01:100:01:12

today I'm actually in Norfolk,

0:01:120:01:14

and vintage engines like this form part of the Thursford Collection,

0:01:140:01:19

started by George Thomas Henry Cushing as a young man

0:01:190:01:23

and now home to more than 30 steam engines,

0:01:230:01:26

ten mechanical organs,

0:01:260:01:28

and a multitude of fairground memorabilia.

0:01:280:01:31

And later on,

0:01:310:01:32

I'll be meeting the next generation of Cushings to discover what other

0:01:320:01:36

wonders they have hidden away.

0:01:360:01:38

Norfolk is a county in East Anglia,

0:01:410:01:43

with both the Wash and the North Sea off its coastline.

0:01:430:01:47

Largely rural, with a low population density of just over 400 people per

0:01:470:01:52

square mile, the flat,

0:01:520:01:54

fertile lands of the region make it ideal for growing crops

0:01:540:01:58

such as wheat and oilseed rape,

0:01:580:02:00

and one in five jobs here are in agriculture or food production.

0:02:000:02:05

The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

0:02:050:02:08

includes the cliffs at Hunstanton.

0:02:080:02:11

Now towering up to 18 metres above the beach, millions of years ago,

0:02:110:02:15

these stark layers of brown carrstone

0:02:150:02:18

and red-and-white limestone were under the sea.

0:02:180:02:21

They're now a rich source of fossils, as well as home to

0:02:210:02:24

colonies of sea birds.

0:02:240:02:25

Other coastal wildlife includes seals,

0:02:270:02:30

with both common and grey being readily sighted

0:02:300:02:32

on the county's beaches,

0:02:320:02:34

including this growing colony at Horsey.

0:02:340:02:38

Another big draw for visitors are the Broads.

0:02:380:02:41

This vast and unique network of largely navigable rivers and lakes

0:02:410:02:45

is popular for boating.

0:02:450:02:47

The tranquillity and charm of the waters are known as

0:02:470:02:51

Britain's Magical Waterway.

0:02:510:02:53

So, if you're looking for peace and serenity alongside coast and

0:02:530:02:57

country, steeped in the traditions and history of bygone eras,

0:02:570:03:01

Norfolk is a county that's hard to surpass.

0:03:010:03:04

The beautiful waterways and quiet woodlands of Norfolk are lucky

0:03:070:03:11

enough to remain undisturbed by motorways,

0:03:110:03:14

and, believe it or not, until the railways arrived in 1845,

0:03:140:03:18

it was actually quicker to get from Norwich to Amsterdam by boat

0:03:180:03:22

than it was down to London by road.

0:03:220:03:24

Such rural idyll is often assumed to come with a hefty price tag,

0:03:240:03:28

yet the average cost of a detached home here is around £245,000.

0:03:280:03:34

That's an impressive £55,000 below the national figure.

0:03:340:03:39

So, what expectations do today's buyers have of this lovely county?

0:03:390:03:43

Let's meet them and find out.

0:03:430:03:44

Keith and Karen made their first bid to escape to the country when they

0:03:460:03:49

moved to their current Hertfordshire home 12 years ago.

0:03:490:03:53

We live in a village called Chipperfield.

0:03:530:03:56

It's a very nice area.

0:03:560:03:59

We live on a small, private road,

0:03:590:04:02

which has a wonderful community spirit, which you don't get in

0:04:020:04:05

many places nowadays.

0:04:050:04:07

But now that Keith has finished work in the insurance industry

0:04:070:04:10

and their sons have left home,

0:04:100:04:11

it's time for an even more rural lifestyle,

0:04:110:04:14

away from the London commuter belt.

0:04:140:04:17

So, a lot of people who live here do commute into London.

0:04:170:04:19

We just feel like there's something else -

0:04:190:04:23

a new challenge waiting for us.

0:04:230:04:25

I've always wanted to live in the countryside,

0:04:250:04:28

and I've always felt a big part of the countryside

0:04:280:04:30

and I'd just like to have it around me.

0:04:300:04:34

It's not just the countryside they want directly around them -

0:04:340:04:37

these animal lovers will be bringing a few four-legged family members

0:04:370:04:41

along for the move.

0:04:410:04:43

Karen has two horses,

0:04:430:04:44

and one of our dreams, if you like,

0:04:440:04:46

has always been to have the horses right outside the back door,

0:04:460:04:49

so you can just walk out to the horses.

0:04:490:04:51

We've got six whippets, which we keep at home.

0:04:510:04:54

They're racing whippets and we used to race them

0:04:540:04:56

quite competitively at one time.

0:04:560:04:58

They're a massive part of our lives, you know?

0:04:580:05:00

They're almost like children, is what I would say,

0:05:000:05:03

and one of the reasons to move to a new location is

0:05:030:05:07

to give them a bit more space to run around in.

0:05:070:05:11

And when it comes to finding a rural retreat for two humans,

0:05:110:05:14

two horses and six dogs,

0:05:140:05:17

there's just one county Keith and Karen have in mind.

0:05:170:05:20

North Norfolk is the area we're looking to move to,

0:05:200:05:23

around the King's Lynn area.

0:05:230:05:25

It's an area that...

0:05:250:05:27

we've holidayed with the children when they were younger.

0:05:270:05:31

Our pound goes further in Norfolk than it would do in the area

0:05:310:05:34

in which we are in.

0:05:340:05:35

It'll give us an opportunity to live the dream that we've

0:05:350:05:38

always wanted to have.

0:05:380:05:40

Part of the Norfolk dream is having time to be creative.

0:05:400:05:45

I do enjoy painting.

0:05:450:05:46

I have a studio in the garden at the moment

0:05:460:05:49

and I'd really like to be able to spend more time doing that

0:05:490:05:52

in the new house.

0:05:520:05:53

I'd quite like to learn a new skill, and learn about gardening

0:05:530:05:56

and growing vegetables.

0:05:560:05:58

I've not had much time to devote to it when I was working,

0:05:580:06:01

so I want to spend more time doing that.

0:06:010:06:03

But, most of all, it's about realising a lifelong plan.

0:06:030:06:07

It's always been our ambition to have a place with land,

0:06:070:06:12

and to have the horses at home,

0:06:120:06:14

and to have other animals, as well, if we can.

0:06:140:06:17

And now's the right time.

0:06:170:06:19

We want to have a new experience in our life

0:06:190:06:21

-while we're still young enough to enjoy it, really.

-Yeah.

0:06:210:06:25

Keith and Karen want to concentrate their search

0:06:280:06:30

in the north of the county, in the area around King's Lynn,

0:06:300:06:34

but before we start looking at property,

0:06:340:06:36

'I'm meeting them in Norfolk to talk about their hopes for the move.'

0:06:360:06:39

Keith and Karen, welcome to Norfolk.

0:06:400:06:42

-Thank you.

-What's attracted you to this part of the country?

0:06:420:06:46

We're just drawn to it, really.

0:06:460:06:48

We've had holidays here for many years now,

0:06:480:06:51

and it just seems a natural progression to, sort of, move here.

0:06:510:06:55

What are you looking for in a property?

0:06:550:06:58

We're mainly looking for a property that's got some land,

0:06:580:07:01

-because I've got two horses, so that is really important.

-OK.

0:07:010:07:06

And we've got six dogs as well.

0:07:060:07:08

We're looking for something that's got stables and land for the horses,

0:07:080:07:11

and plenty of space for the dogs.

0:07:110:07:13

What about the property itself?

0:07:130:07:15

Well, we're quite open-minded.

0:07:150:07:17

I quite like Georgian-style properties.

0:07:170:07:20

And I don't mind a barn conversion -

0:07:200:07:22

that would be interesting for me to see.

0:07:220:07:24

You know, we quite like modern style inside,

0:07:240:07:27

but that's not to say if we found a house that needed some work,

0:07:270:07:30

we would definitely consider, erm, you know,

0:07:300:07:32

thinking about doing some work if we had to.

0:07:320:07:35

We'd like an en-suite bathroom for our room,

0:07:350:07:37

but not bothered about whether that's the case or not.

0:07:370:07:40

So, fairly flexible, I think, is what, you know, you'll find us.

0:07:400:07:43

How important is location, community around you?

0:07:430:07:47

That's fairly important, actually, yeah.

0:07:470:07:49

We don't want to be completely isolated,

0:07:490:07:52

but, on the other hand, we don't want near neighbours.

0:07:520:07:56

OK, remind me of your budget.

0:07:560:07:58

Our budget is £850,000.

0:07:580:08:01

OK, well, let's go and find you a house.

0:08:010:08:03

-Lovely.

-Thank you.

0:08:030:08:04

So, for a top budget of £850,000,

0:08:060:08:10

Karen and Keith are flexible on the accommodation in the house,

0:08:100:08:14

but must have enough land for their two horses,

0:08:140:08:17

as well as a dog-friendly garden.

0:08:170:08:19

They want a private location away from a main road,

0:08:190:08:23

but with easy access to a community,

0:08:230:08:25

and they are open to doing some work.

0:08:250:08:28

We found a real variety of incredible properties

0:08:280:08:32

to meet their needs, and, at each, I'll be getting them to guess

0:08:320:08:35

the asking price before I reveal it.

0:08:350:08:38

And the final offering will be our Mystery House,

0:08:380:08:41

which could really test just how far they'll go

0:08:410:08:44

to get the land they're after.

0:08:440:08:46

Our search is heading to Emneth,

0:08:520:08:54

a fenland village close to the border with Cambridgeshire.

0:08:540:08:58

There's an active community here, as well as good facilities,

0:08:580:09:01

including pubs, a post office and stores,

0:09:010:09:05

and a butcher's.

0:09:050:09:07

St Edmund's features a bellcote with six bells.

0:09:070:09:10

Former vicars of the church include the Reverend Wilbert Awdry,

0:09:100:09:14

creator of Thomas the Tank Engine.

0:09:140:09:17

It's said the tracks of the reverend's model railway

0:09:170:09:20

remain in the attic of the neighbouring vicarage.

0:09:200:09:23

And less than a mile away, we find our first house.

0:09:230:09:27

It looks interesting.

0:09:280:09:29

Yeah, it looks quite old.

0:09:290:09:31

It is quite old. It's a Grade II listed Jacobean manor house.

0:09:310:09:36

Yeah, I like the look of it. It's got a nice symmetry about it, hasn't it...

0:09:360:09:39

-Mm-hmm.

-..with the two wings on either side.

0:09:390:09:40

Yeah, it's handsome. Nice big windows.

0:09:400:09:42

-Yeah, it's nice.

-Tick, tick, so far!

0:09:420:09:44

LAUGHTER I'm glad to hear it.

0:09:440:09:47

You'll definitely feel the history of the house,

0:09:470:09:49

-when we go inside.

-Yeah.

0:09:490:09:50

I won't take you through the front entrance -

0:09:500:09:52

as with a lot of these houses in the country,

0:09:520:09:55

we'll go in through the kitchen.

0:09:550:09:56

-Lovely, thank you.

-Thank you.

0:09:560:09:58

'Built in the early 17th century,

0:09:590:10:01

'with extensions to either side added around 100 years later,

0:10:010:10:05

'we're heading to the left-hand wing,

0:10:050:10:07

'which leads straight into the rather rustic kitchen-diner.'

0:10:070:10:11

Come in.

0:10:140:10:16

Thank you.

0:10:160:10:17

If you want to move to the country, you need a country kitchen.

0:10:170:10:20

It is a country kitchen. Very homely.

0:10:200:10:23

It's fantastic, isn't it? Quite lofty ceilings, as well.

0:10:230:10:25

I wasn't expecting that -

0:10:250:10:27

being a Jacobean house, I thought it might have lower ceilings.

0:10:270:10:29

And the range over there, I can see in the archway.

0:10:290:10:32

Yeah, it's a real feature, isn't it?

0:10:320:10:34

And room for a big table.

0:10:340:10:36

Yeah, which is fantastic, yeah. For the family.

0:10:360:10:38

And you've got a utility room as well,

0:10:380:10:40

which you could use as a boot room, too,

0:10:400:10:42

-so, another place where you can clean up the dogs...

-Very useful.

0:10:420:10:45

And there's a really nice conservatory over there,

0:10:450:10:47

where the dogs can chill.

0:10:470:10:48

They'd like that, yeah!

0:10:480:10:49

They'd spend a lot of time out there, no doubt, I'm sure!

0:10:490:10:52

Yeah, but there's plenty of other rooms to have a look at.

0:10:520:10:55

'Off the kitchen, there's also a handy cloakroom,

0:10:570:10:59

'then, to the front of this wing is the first of four

0:10:590:11:02

'large reception rooms.'

0:11:020:11:05

So, this is the main sitting room.

0:11:050:11:07

It's a nice room, nice and bright.

0:11:070:11:09

The fireplace is a real feature, isn't it?

0:11:090:11:11

-And this is where you see the history of the property...

-Yeah.

0:11:110:11:14

..because this is the old exterior.

0:11:140:11:17

Yeah, I really like that.

0:11:170:11:19

-It's a nice feature of the building.

-Yeah, and they've kept that.

-Yeah.

0:11:190:11:22

-It's a good-sized room.

-Yeah, very nice.

0:11:220:11:24

It's not too small, it's not too big -

0:11:240:11:26

-it's just right.

-Big size.

0:11:260:11:27

I can imagine spending some nice evenings in here

0:11:270:11:29

in front of the fire.

0:11:290:11:30

-Yeah, definitely.

-Lovely.

0:11:300:11:32

-No, but this isn't the only reception room.

-OK.

0:11:320:11:35

-There's plenty more. Follow me.

-All right.

0:11:350:11:38

There's also a formal dining room.

0:11:400:11:42

-What an amazing room.

-It's beautiful.

0:11:430:11:45

The fireplace is just incredible.

0:11:450:11:47

It's got a lot of history to it. You can see that. Hasn't it?

0:11:470:11:49

-Yeah, yeah.

-Yeah, it's lovely.

-Yeah, I like it a lot.

0:11:490:11:52

And then, next door, they've got what they call a music room,

0:11:520:11:54

because there's a piano in there.

0:11:540:11:56

-At the end...

-Right.

-..they've got a study.

0:11:560:11:59

-Right.

-But you've got a lot of options.

0:11:590:12:02

Would you use this as a dining room?

0:12:020:12:04

-Don't know.

-It's up to you.

-I don't know.

0:12:040:12:06

Yeah, it's a beautiful room, though. Very nice.

0:12:060:12:08

-Shall we head upstairs? Yeah?

-Let's do that.

0:12:080:12:11

'So, bags of character and space on this floor.

0:12:120:12:15

'Stairs lead up to the four-bedroom accommodation.

0:12:150:12:18

'Over the kitchen sits a large guest bedroom with en-suite facilities.

0:12:180:12:23

'Next to this, the family bathroom, with a roll-top bath,

0:12:230:12:27

'serves two further bedrooms.

0:12:270:12:29

'One is currently used as a twin,

0:12:290:12:31

'and the other has its own wash basin.

0:12:310:12:34

'That leaves the entirety of the other wing for

0:12:340:12:37

'an extremely generous suite for Keith and Karen.'

0:12:370:12:40

In here is the master suite,

0:12:400:12:43

-so you've got the en-suite over there.

-Right.

-Mm-hmm.

0:12:430:12:46

And then...the master bedroom.

0:12:460:12:49

It's a big room, isn't it?

0:12:500:12:51

It's great. It's dual-aspect.

0:12:510:12:53

Great views out the front, there.

0:12:530:12:55

We weren't expecting we'd get a big bedroom,

0:12:550:12:57

as big a bedroom as we've got at home,

0:12:570:12:58

so it's fantastic to have that.

0:12:580:13:00

Could you see yourselves living here?

0:13:000:13:03

-I think so.

-Yeah, I definitely think so, yeah.

0:13:030:13:05

I'm surprised at how nice it is.

0:13:050:13:07

It's a good start.

0:13:070:13:08

It's a good start, because now it all comes down

0:13:080:13:10

to the garden, doesn't it?

0:13:100:13:12

Yeah, absolutely.

0:13:120:13:13

-Yeah.

-The outside space is as important as the inside space, so...

0:13:130:13:16

-Let's head outside, then.

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:13:160:13:19

'Well, we've agreed space is not a problem inside the house,

0:13:190:13:23

'and outside, the grounds are pleasantly landscaped

0:13:230:13:25

'with formal lawns, as well as alfresco seating options

0:13:250:13:29

'and even a substantial outbuilding, housing a swimming pool.

0:13:290:13:33

'Whilst there are currently no dedicated paddocks,

0:13:330:13:35

'there are a total of four acres to play with.'

0:13:350:13:39

-Four acres is plenty of space, isn't it?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:13:390:13:42

So putting up posts and rail wouldn't be too much

0:13:420:13:44

-of an issue, I guess.

-Yeah, and it's nice and level.

0:13:440:13:47

-It is, very, very flat, isn't it?

-Yeah, exactly.

0:13:470:13:49

You don't have to level anything out.

0:13:490:13:50

You've got the space, as you said,

0:13:500:13:52

-if you section off a little bit as a paddock.

-Yeah.

0:13:520:13:55

But it's nice - it's a nice big area, isn't it?

0:13:550:13:56

Yes, it's beautiful. Yeah.

0:13:560:13:58

-And very nicely landscaped at the moment.

-Yeah.

0:13:580:14:00

-Yeah.

-There's lots of possibilities.

0:14:000:14:02

-So, how much does it cost?

-Right.

0:14:020:14:05

-Good question.

-It's time to guess the price.

0:14:050:14:08

You go first.

0:14:080:14:10

Erm, well, our budget's 850.

0:14:100:14:12

I mean, it's a lovely house, so I reckon...

0:14:120:14:15

795.

0:14:150:14:16

I'm thinking more, a bit lower...

0:14:160:14:18

750?

0:14:180:14:20

It's actually currently on the market for...

0:14:200:14:22

£650,000.

0:14:220:14:24

-Wow!

-Really?

0:14:240:14:25

-Yes.

-That's exciting. Yeah.

0:14:250:14:27

-Yeah, it's amazing.

-Yeah.

0:14:270:14:28

I didn't realise, you know, you could get so much for your money

0:14:280:14:31

-in this area.

-No.

0:14:310:14:32

Well, do you want to have another look around the house

0:14:320:14:35

and then I will meet you out the front?

0:14:350:14:37

-OK.

-OK. Thank you.

0:14:370:14:39

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:14:390:14:40

-Shall we go and have a look at the pool house?

-Mm-hm.

0:14:400:14:43

I'm so pleased they love it,

0:14:430:14:45

because it is a real opportunity when you consider their budget,

0:14:450:14:49

so fingers crossed.

0:14:490:14:51

It's a great start.

0:14:510:14:52

This Grade II listed Jacobean manor house

0:14:540:14:57

is an incredible £200,000 below budget

0:14:570:15:01

and offers lots of period features,

0:15:010:15:04

no fewer than four reception rooms,

0:15:040:15:06

and a large country kitchen.

0:15:060:15:08

There's a utility room for the dogs and plenty of space for horses.

0:15:080:15:12

Not something we were looking for...

0:15:130:15:15

-Big area, though.

-Yeah.

-Massive room, isn't it?

0:15:150:15:17

Maybe convert it into stables or use it for some other purpose.

0:15:170:15:21

I love the house. I'm pleasantly surprised.

0:15:210:15:23

The room sizes are very, very good.

0:15:230:15:25

The ceiling heights are good - plenty of space.

0:15:250:15:27

It's a nice house and I know Karen likes it.

0:15:270:15:29

She feels it's got a nice, you know, feel to it.

0:15:290:15:32

That counts for a lot, doesn't it?

0:15:320:15:34

It's a lovely first house, isn't it?

0:15:370:15:39

Very nice house.

0:15:390:15:41

Beautiful, yeah.

0:15:410:15:42

And there's plenty more to come.

0:15:420:15:44

Thank you.

0:15:440:15:45

Norfolk's low population density and unique habitats make it

0:15:510:15:55

a haven for wildlife.

0:15:550:15:57

One of the rarest seals in the world, the grey,

0:15:570:16:00

lives along the county's stunning coastline.

0:16:000:16:04

Almost half of the world's grey seals are found in the UK,

0:16:040:16:07

so caring for them is of global significance.

0:16:070:16:11

The good news is that this breeding colony saw

0:16:110:16:14

record numbers of births last season,

0:16:140:16:16

but with over 1,000 pups born here at Horsey,

0:16:160:16:19

there are now more seals needing support.

0:16:190:16:22

So, we're sending animal lovers and fans of all things horsey,

0:16:220:16:26

Keith and Karen, to a wildlife rescue centre

0:16:260:16:29

to meet RSPCA supervisor Jo Meade,

0:16:290:16:32

who's helping orphaned, sick or injured seals

0:16:320:16:35

from Norfolk and beyond.

0:16:350:16:37

How many seals do you have here at the moment, Jo?

0:16:370:16:39

We've got roughly about 50 seals at the moment.

0:16:390:16:42

-SEAL MOANS

-Some of them are still quite poorly in our isolation unit.

0:16:420:16:45

Some of them, like these guys out here,

0:16:450:16:47

are just fattening up, ready for release.

0:16:470:16:49

So why are they here, Jo?

0:16:490:16:50

For a variety of reasons.

0:16:500:16:52

They can get separated from their mums.

0:16:520:16:54

Many of them have come in where they're bit older

0:16:540:16:57

and they develop lungworm, so we treat them for that.

0:16:570:17:01

And members of the public kindly phone us

0:17:010:17:03

and we take them in and rehab them.

0:17:030:17:04

We do really well with seals.

0:17:040:17:06

They're very resilient animals.

0:17:060:17:08

Obviously, not all of them make it.

0:17:080:17:10

Sometimes when they come to us, they are so sick that they don't make it,

0:17:100:17:15

but a majority do.

0:17:150:17:17

The centre manages to rehabilitate 80% of the seals that come here,

0:17:170:17:22

with most staying for three to five months before they're released

0:17:220:17:25

back into the wild.

0:17:250:17:27

There are three stages prior to release.

0:17:270:17:30

The first is the isolation unit,

0:17:300:17:31

where injured seals are treated,

0:17:310:17:34

before they move on to stage number two.

0:17:340:17:36

OK, so come in. These are our intermediate pools.

0:17:370:17:41

So, this is where the seals come when they're well enough to come out

0:17:410:17:44

of the isolation unit,

0:17:440:17:46

so they come here for a bit of exercise, fatten up a bit and...

0:17:460:17:49

-before they go outside.

-SEAL MOANS

0:17:490:17:51

We have a very strict regime on how we deal with them,

0:17:510:17:54

so it's vital that we move them through the system

0:17:540:17:56

as quickly as possible,

0:17:560:17:57

because we've always got new seals coming in,

0:17:570:18:00

and it's very labour-intensive.

0:18:000:18:01

They're really hard work.

0:18:010:18:03

And what care do they need?

0:18:030:18:04

Obviously the regular feeding,

0:18:040:18:06

regular weighing,

0:18:060:18:08

and just keeping a health-check on them.

0:18:080:18:10

Our aim is just to build them up and get them nice and fat for release.

0:18:100:18:14

SEALS BARK

0:18:140:18:16

The final stage is the outdoor pool -

0:18:160:18:19

here, each seal is fed three kilos of mackerel per day.

0:18:190:18:24

Right, so if you want to just grab a few each and throw them...

0:18:240:18:27

If you try and move them around the pool...

0:18:270:18:29

Throw them right at the back, then they'll...

0:18:290:18:33

Throwing the fish around helps get the seals

0:18:330:18:35

fit and ready for the wild.

0:18:350:18:37

Each week, the pool is drained and the seals are weighed.

0:18:370:18:40

Once a seal achieves its target weight, it's time for it to leave.

0:18:400:18:45

Right, that's the last couple now,

0:18:450:18:47

so that'll be it until dinner time.

0:18:470:18:51

Nearly finished!

0:18:510:18:52

I wonder who's going to get this one, then!

0:18:520:18:54

LAUGHTER

0:18:540:18:57

And it's time for us to leave the seals to fight over that final fish,

0:18:570:19:01

as Keith and Karen turn their attention to

0:19:010:19:03

their Norfolk property search.

0:19:030:19:05

Our house-hunt is taking us to Dersingham,

0:19:110:19:14

a village close to the coast.

0:19:140:19:16

Highlights include St Nicholas,

0:19:160:19:18

one of the great churches of the 14th century,

0:19:180:19:21

and nature lovers can enjoy Dersingham bog reserve.

0:19:210:19:24

Facilities here include pubs, a bowling green,

0:19:240:19:29

a variety of stores and a garden centre.

0:19:290:19:33

The property we've come to see is on a hill that enjoys far-reaching

0:19:330:19:36

'country and coastal views on the outskirts of the village.'

0:19:360:19:40

Welcome to the farm cottage.

0:19:400:19:43

Beautiful. It looks lovely from the outside.

0:19:430:19:45

Yeah, really lovely.

0:19:450:19:46

I like the stone and the typical Norfolk roof tiles.

0:19:460:19:49

-Especially from this side.

-It must be deceptive.

0:19:490:19:52

It is deceptive.

0:19:520:19:53

It's a substantial home.

0:19:530:19:55

-They look really fantastic.

-And the outlook's great as well.

0:19:550:19:57

-Yeah, the views are to die for, aren't they?

-And the setting.

0:19:570:19:59

-The setting is fantastic.

-Beautiful.

-I can see some outbuildings as well.

0:19:590:20:02

You've already spotted them! LAUGHTER

0:20:020:20:05

What do you think so far, then?

0:20:050:20:07

-I want to see more.

-It looks really attractive.

0:20:070:20:09

I would say it is a very typical Norfolk-looking property

0:20:090:20:12

from the outside.

0:20:120:20:14

Very attractive, so I'm looking to see more inside, definitely.

0:20:140:20:16

-Let's go in.

-Yeah.

0:20:160:20:18

'Built in the 1800s,'

0:20:190:20:21

this property was originally two farm cottages

0:20:210:20:24

which were joined to create a sizeable home

0:20:240:20:27

that extends considerably behind.

0:20:270:20:29

Still essentially two wings,

0:20:310:20:33

the majority of the living space is found in the right-hand wing,

0:20:330:20:37

with the front door leading directly into an open-plan living area of the

0:20:370:20:40

house, which is currently unoccupied.

0:20:400:20:43

Oh! Right, OK.

0:20:460:20:48

-It's unfurnished.

-It's unfurnished.

0:20:480:20:50

That means you just have to use your imaginations.

0:20:500:20:52

Maybe it makes it easier to imagine your own things in it.

0:20:520:20:54

-I don't know.

-Yeah, certainly, I can do that.

0:20:540:20:56

-You've got two reception rooms here...

-Yeah.

0:20:560:20:58

..and they've got the dining room there,

0:20:580:21:02

but, again, it just depends.

0:21:020:21:03

I think these rooms, you can use them for whatever you'd like.

0:21:030:21:05

-And I like the brick exposed...

-OK.

-Mmm.

0:21:050:21:08

..and clearly a wood-burner, which is fantastic for the winter.

0:21:080:21:11

Yes, so it's got that open-plan feel, really.

0:21:110:21:14

Yeah, it does.

0:21:140:21:16

And then we come into the kitchen.

0:21:160:21:19

Nice, big space.

0:21:220:21:24

-It's much bigger than I thought it was going to be, actually.

-Yeah.

0:21:240:21:27

It looks reasonably well-decorated and it looks like it hasn't been

0:21:270:21:29

empty for very long, doesn't it?

0:21:290:21:31

-No, and it hasn't been, no.

-So...

0:21:310:21:33

-So far, so good?

-It looks nice.

0:21:330:21:35

-I like it.

-Fantastic.

0:21:350:21:36

There's a utility room and a downstairs loo there.

0:21:360:21:38

-There's also a home office just through there...

-Right.

0:21:380:21:41

-OK.

-..so you don't have to worry about space with this house.

0:21:410:21:45

No, I can see that. It's got plenty of space in here.

0:21:450:21:48

Now, I did say there were two parts to the house.

0:21:480:21:50

There are also two staircases. I'll take you up the main one.

0:21:500:21:53

OK.

0:21:530:21:54

'So, lots of versatile space in this period property.'

0:21:550:21:59

The rest of this floor also has a downstairs bathroom

0:21:590:22:02

and rather a big surprise,

0:22:020:22:04

but before I reveal that,

0:22:040:22:06

we're taking one of two staircases up to the six-bedroomed sleeping

0:22:060:22:10

accommodation, which, again, is split into two sections.

0:22:100:22:14

To the left is a self-contained annexe with two bedrooms,

0:22:140:22:18

but we're heading to the remaining four bedrooms in the other wing.

0:22:180:22:22

Above the downstairs living space is a family bathroom that serves

0:22:240:22:27

three guest bedrooms - a double, and two smaller rooms,

0:22:270:22:31

one with built-in storage,

0:22:310:22:33

'and then there's the largest bedroom, with en-suite facilities.'

0:22:330:22:38

There are four bedrooms in this part of the house.

0:22:380:22:42

I will emphasise "in this part of the house".

0:22:420:22:44

-This is the master...

-Right.

-..with the en-suite.

0:22:440:22:47

-Pop your head through.

-This is a nice-sized room as well, isn't it?

0:22:470:22:50

For me, this room and the selling point is the view.

0:22:500:22:54

-Yeah.

-I can picture us laying in bed and you bringing me a cup of tea up.

0:22:540:22:57

-Well, that's normal, isn't it?

-OK. LAUGHTER

0:22:570:23:00

It looks lovely. Really nice, actually.

0:23:000:23:01

Yeah, I really like it. I'm a bit worried.

0:23:010:23:03

What are you worried about?!

0:23:030:23:04

-I'm worried we can't afford it!

-LAUGHTER

0:23:040:23:07

-I'm glad to know you like it that much!

-I do.

0:23:070:23:08

And I've not even shown you the other part of the house.

0:23:080:23:11

Let's go there.

0:23:110:23:12

OK, thank you.

0:23:120:23:14

'Yes, there's even more to see,

0:23:140:23:16

'as connecting doors to a corridor and stairs lead through to the

0:23:160:23:20

'potentially self-contained top-floor annexe.'

0:23:200:23:23

Blimey, where are we going?

0:23:250:23:27

I don't know!

0:23:280:23:30

Through the tunnel is the second wing.

0:23:300:23:33

Wow! This is amazing, isn't it?

0:23:330:23:35

Look at this ceiling and everything.

0:23:350:23:38

So this is the, sort of, main living area of

0:23:380:23:40

-the second part of the house.

-Right.

0:23:400:23:42

-That's actually a kitchen, a kitchenette.

-Right.

0:23:420:23:45

And there are two decent-sized bedrooms in this part,

0:23:450:23:48

also a bathroom,

0:23:480:23:50

and what you could call a seventh bedroom to the house,

0:23:500:23:53

or a dressing-room.

0:23:530:23:54

-I don't think you'd need a seventh bedroom...

-No.

0:23:540:23:56

..so shall we call it a six-bedroom house in total?

0:23:560:23:58

Was it separated as a holiday home?

0:23:580:24:00

Yeah, they used to have it as a holiday let.

0:24:000:24:02

I could have this as my studio.

0:24:020:24:04

It's a bonus. Definitely a bonus.

0:24:040:24:06

So what's underneath this part of the house?

0:24:060:24:09

Ah-ha!

0:24:090:24:10

Now I can show you.

0:24:100:24:11

OK.

0:24:110:24:13

Let's head down the stairs.

0:24:130:24:15

'Taking the second staircase from the sitting room of this annexe,

0:24:150:24:18

'we reach the sneaky surprise I've been keeping

0:24:180:24:20

'from horse-lover Karen.'

0:24:200:24:22

So, the main entrance to this part...

0:24:220:24:25

And then...

0:24:250:24:26

Ta-da!

0:24:260:24:28

KEITH LAUGHS

0:24:280:24:30

Stables underneath the accommodation?

0:24:300:24:33

KEITH AND KAREN LAUGH

0:24:330:24:36

Absolutely ideal.

0:24:360:24:38

-Yeah, it'll keep the bath warm.

-I wasn't expecting this at all!

0:24:380:24:42

And there's a garage through there as well,

0:24:420:24:44

-storage or whatever else you needed, all the horse's stuff.

-Right. Yeah.

0:24:440:24:48

This house just keeps on giving, doesn't it?

0:24:480:24:50

Shall we see what land comes with the house, then?

0:24:500:24:52

-Oh, yes, please.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:24:520:24:54

So, plenty to cater to Keith and Karen and all four-legged members of

0:24:540:24:59

their family in this 19th-century hilltop cottage.

0:24:590:25:03

But there's more!

0:25:030:25:04

A selection of outbuildings includes a garden room as well as a workshop,

0:25:040:25:09

and it all lies in 1.6 acres of grounds,

0:25:090:25:12

with that all-important paddock,

0:25:120:25:14

featuring distant coastal views to the Wash.

0:25:140:25:18

You wanted a paddock -

0:25:180:25:20

how about a paddock with a view?

0:25:200:25:21

Yeah, that's amazing.

0:25:210:25:22

They're going to be the most spoilt horses in the country.

0:25:220:25:25

-They are.

-Too right. Yeah.

0:25:250:25:26

So, this paddock is three quarters of an acre -

0:25:260:25:28

is that enough for two horses?

0:25:280:25:30

-Not ideally, no.

-No.

0:25:300:25:32

The other paddock area's outside the stables,

0:25:320:25:35

that belongs to your neighbour,

0:25:350:25:37

-so you might be able to negotiate just renting that off them.

-Right.

0:25:370:25:40

They don't use it for horses,

0:25:400:25:41

-so it's just there, sitting, free.

-Sounds like an option.

0:25:410:25:43

Yeah, that's something we'd like to explore.

0:25:430:25:45

-Yeah, definitely, yeah.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:25:450:25:47

-You like the house.

-I do.

0:25:480:25:49

How much will you have to pay for it?

0:25:490:25:51

I think you've gone over our budget.

0:25:510:25:53

I think this would be 880.

0:25:530:25:57

I'm not going to go that high,

0:25:570:25:58

-cos I don't think you'd be that cruel to us, so...

-He has faith.

0:25:580:26:00

..so I'm going to say 830.

0:26:000:26:03

OK.

0:26:030:26:04

You're lucky - Keith is closer.

0:26:060:26:07

-Is he?

-He is.

0:26:070:26:10

It's on the market for £795,000.

0:26:100:26:14

-Wow.

-Is it?

-Wow!

-I wasn't expecting that at all.

0:26:140:26:16

No, it's fantastic news. It really is.

0:26:160:26:18

-Definitely worth us having a long, hard think about, definitely.

-Yeah.

0:26:180:26:21

You're itching to go and see that sea view, aren't you?

0:26:210:26:23

-I am, yes.

-Go, go, I can't stop you.

0:26:230:26:25

-OK, thank you.

-Thank you.

0:26:250:26:27

Let's go and have a look.

0:26:270:26:28

£55,000 below budget,

0:26:300:26:32

this substantial 1800s hilltop cottage has open-plan living spaces,

0:26:320:26:38

six bedrooms and a self-contained annexe.

0:26:380:26:41

There are integral stables and a paddock with coastal views.

0:26:410:26:45

So...

0:26:460:26:48

Wow, that's a view and a half, isn't it?

0:26:480:26:50

Fantastic. Lucky horses.

0:26:500:26:52

-Yeah, the icing on the cake.

-Yeah.

0:26:520:26:55

It's a very pretty cottage -

0:26:550:26:57

a very traditional-looking Norfolk property.

0:26:570:26:59

As soon as I walked in, I could see...

0:26:590:27:03

that this is a place that we could make our own.

0:27:030:27:06

I think it's in a fantastic location.

0:27:060:27:08

It's on the top of a hill and the outlook is fantastic -

0:27:080:27:11

you know, all your fields all around you and a view to the sea.

0:27:110:27:14

It's a beautiful setting. Absolutely lovely.

0:27:140:27:17

I could see us living here, definitely.

0:27:170:27:20

It certainly offers more than this facade suggests, doesn't it?

0:27:240:27:28

-It does.

-Absolutely, yeah.

0:27:280:27:29

It's very surprising.

0:27:290:27:30

And you both look very at home, already, may I say?

0:27:300:27:34

Yeah, we are.

0:27:340:27:35

-Not bad for a first day of house-hunting.

-Yeah.

0:27:350:27:38

'We're in Norfolk,

0:27:500:27:51

'helping Keith and Karen from Hertfordshire find a house

0:27:510:27:54

'with land for their two horses and six dogs.'

0:27:540:27:57

We've already shown them some amazing property,

0:27:570:28:00

within their budget of £850,000,

0:28:000:28:03

but there's more to see.

0:28:030:28:05

And our Mystery offering could be the outsider in the field,

0:28:050:28:09

but will it have a winning finish?

0:28:090:28:11

It has potential, yeah, and it doesn't faze me, at all.

0:28:110:28:14

-No?

-No.

-You look very calm about all of this.

0:28:140:28:16

-Mm-hm.

-Yeah.

-Fantastic.

0:28:160:28:18

'Plus, I get into the groove with a very special Norfolk collection.'

0:28:180:28:24

-All you do is put it in the frame, like that...

-Right.

0:28:240:28:28

..and pull the frame down.

0:28:280:28:31

ORGAN PLAYS LOUDLY

0:28:310:28:33

Well done!

0:28:330:28:34

It's day two of our property search

0:28:390:28:41

and time to reveal our Mystery House.

0:28:410:28:43

It's somewhere that will test Karen and Keith's willingness

0:28:430:28:47

to put in some work to create their dream home.

0:28:470:28:50

So, what do you think I have up my sleeve for the Mystery House?

0:28:540:28:58

I'm hoping you haven't got a nice, converted windmill,

0:28:580:29:01

or a converted water mill,

0:29:010:29:04

or a thatched property,

0:29:040:29:07

cos I'm not enthusiastic about those.

0:29:070:29:09

I'm hoping that the house and the land

0:29:090:29:13

are going to be exactly what we've asked for.

0:29:130:29:16

What if the land is exactly what you want, but the house isn't?

0:29:160:29:21

-Then there's things that we can do to alter a house...

-Yeah.

0:29:210:29:24

..but, generally, you can't alter the land.

0:29:240:29:27

I guess we'll wait and see. You're going to surprise us, aren't you?

0:29:270:29:31

Our Mystery offering is located in the small village

0:29:340:29:38

of Tilney All Saints.

0:29:380:29:40

Nearby facilities, found in the larger village of

0:29:400:29:43

Terrington St Clement,

0:29:430:29:44

include two pubs serving food, takeaways,

0:29:440:29:47

a well-stocked hardware store and a vet.

0:29:470:29:51

And just under three miles away, in Tilney All Saints,

0:29:510:29:54

we find our Mystery House.

0:29:540:29:56

That's a very handsome house.

0:29:570:29:58

It's very imposing, actually.

0:29:580:30:00

It looks quite grand, from the outside.

0:30:000:30:02

Yeah, it's got a lovely facade to it.

0:30:020:30:04

-First impressions are fantastic, actually.

-Yeah?

0:30:040:30:06

And then you've got the view out across the land, I guess,

0:30:060:30:08

which, I presume, is all part of the property?

0:30:080:30:10

It is, and I know how important land is to you both.

0:30:100:30:13

It comes with five and a half acres that belongs to the property...

0:30:130:30:17

-Fantastic.

-..and a lot of paddock space.

0:30:170:30:20

The amount of land sounds just right.

0:30:200:30:22

It's perfect for the two horses and being right outside the house.

0:30:220:30:26

-Yes.

-So, fantastic. Yeah.

0:30:260:30:27

-Yeah, good.

-So far, so good.

0:30:270:30:29

-Happy so far?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, excellent. Yeah.

0:30:290:30:31

Now it's time to reveal the Mystery.

0:30:310:30:33

Let's go inside.

0:30:330:30:34

-OK, thank you.

-OK.

0:30:340:30:36

'Karen has a love of Georgian properties

0:30:360:30:38

'and this one has certainly impressed them

0:30:380:30:40

'with its land and exterior.

0:30:400:30:43

'A front door framed with Doric columns takes us

0:30:430:30:46

'via an elegant entrance hall into the large drawing room of

0:30:460:30:50

'this part-furnished home.'

0:30:500:30:52

So, as you can see, the house really needs a bit of a loving touch.

0:30:550:31:01

-It certainly does.

-Yeah.

0:31:010:31:02

That's the Mystery - you would need to put your own stamp on it.

0:31:020:31:06

Well, we're not afraid of hard work, and we've done it before

0:31:060:31:09

and we can do it again, so we're up for the challenge.

0:31:090:31:11

Yeah, definitely. It's dated, but I can see some original features.

0:31:110:31:16

-Yeah, I love the floor, actually.

-Yes, very good.

-Yeah.

0:31:160:31:19

Around the edge of the carpet, the middle,

0:31:190:31:22

it's like a dance floor or something, isn't it?

0:31:220:31:24

And that bay window just is perfect to look out onto

0:31:240:31:27

the paddocks, and, you know, again, you can keep an eye on the horses.

0:31:270:31:31

I can just see myself sitting there, looking out onto the grass, there

0:31:310:31:34

and to the pond out there.

0:31:340:31:36

-Yeah, I'm keen to see more.

-Yeah.

0:31:360:31:38

Shall we go through to the kitchen?

0:31:380:31:40

-Let's do that.

-Lead the way.

-Thank you.

0:31:400:31:43

'Keith and Karen seem open to the potential of this project property,

0:31:430:31:47

'and there are three further reception spaces on this floor,

0:31:470:31:50

'as well as a downstairs bathroom, boot room and a utility.'

0:31:500:31:54

-Here we are in the kitchen.

-Right, yeah.

0:31:580:32:01

I think this is one of the first rooms you'd do up, really.

0:32:010:32:04

-Yeah.

-I think you'd have to. But it's a good-sized room.

0:32:040:32:07

It's a good, square room.

0:32:070:32:08

Yeah, the window's big, isn't it? Nice.

0:32:080:32:10

Yeah, it looks out onto your courtyard.

0:32:100:32:11

But, yeah, it offers a lot of potential, doesn't it?

0:32:110:32:14

It has potential, yeah, and it doesn't faze me at all.

0:32:140:32:16

-No?

-No.

-You look very calm about all of this.

0:32:160:32:18

-Mm-hm.

-Yeah.

-Fantastic.

0:32:180:32:20

-Let's go upstairs.

-After you.

0:32:200:32:22

Upstairs, there are six bedrooms,

0:32:290:32:31

and they're all served by a family bathroom.

0:32:310:32:34

A large bedroom lies to the front, above the drawing room,

0:32:340:32:38

and has windows to two sides.

0:32:380:32:40

Then, behind this is the largest of the six bedrooms,

0:32:400:32:44

with built-in storage.

0:32:440:32:46

'All these rooms are reached by a landing

0:32:460:32:48

'with rather grand proportions.'

0:32:480:32:51

And this, I think, is beautiful in itself -

0:32:510:32:53

almost another room, this hallway.

0:32:530:32:55

-It is.

-Yes, it's huge, this landing.

0:32:550:32:57

Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it?

0:32:570:32:58

-You don't get this in a normal house, do you?

-No.

0:32:580:33:01

'Enough space for Keith and Karen inside -

0:33:020:33:05

'now to show them where their horses would be staying.

0:33:050:33:08

'Outside, a driveway leads to a courtyard,

0:33:080:33:11

'surrounded by a variety of outbuildings.'

0:33:110:33:13

You've got two stables.

0:33:150:33:16

You could turn the end part into a third stable,

0:33:160:33:19

-if you wanted another horse.

-All right.

0:33:190:33:21

That's the original tack room,

0:33:210:33:22

-so the current owners use this for their horses.

-OK. Mm-hm.

0:33:220:33:26

Two garages and some more outbuildings.

0:33:260:33:28

-Well, there's plenty of space, isn't there?

-OK.

0:33:280:33:30

Even for Karen's trailer for her horse,

0:33:300:33:33

-as well, it would be fantastic.

-Oh, plenty of room.

0:33:330:33:36

-Yeah.

-Absolutely, yeah, more than we'd need.

0:33:360:33:38

-More than we'd need, yeah, definitely.

-Yeah, I'm happy.

0:33:380:33:40

-Let's head where we started.

-OK. Thank you.

0:33:400:33:43

'This house may come with the requisite land and outbuildings,

0:33:430:33:46

'as well as more than enough accommodation,

0:33:460:33:49

'but it is quite a renovation project,

0:33:490:33:51

'so I suspect Keith and Karen's final judgment

0:33:510:33:54

'will all come down to the price.'

0:33:540:33:56

What about the challenge of the Mystery?

0:33:560:33:59

Well, it is a challenge.

0:33:590:34:00

It's a very imposing property,

0:34:000:34:02

but it does need a bit of work inside,

0:34:020:34:04

to bring it up to modern-day standards.

0:34:040:34:06

It depends whether we've got the money to do it, I guess.

0:34:060:34:09

So, we'd better talk about the price.

0:34:090:34:11

I'm going to say...

0:34:110:34:12

740,000.

0:34:120:34:14

OK.

0:34:140:34:16

And I'm hoping it's going to be...

0:34:160:34:19

720?

0:34:190:34:22

Well, you're both not far off, relatively.

0:34:220:34:24

It's actually on the market for...

0:34:240:34:27

£695,000.

0:34:270:34:30

-Right.

-Is it, really?

0:34:300:34:31

-Yes.

-Wow. Yeah.

0:34:310:34:33

I'm surprised, again, you know.

0:34:330:34:35

-That's...

-Good value, I would have thought.

0:34:350:34:37

Why don't you have another look around?

0:34:370:34:39

Have a chat and I will meet you in the courtyard.

0:34:390:34:42

-OK, thank you.

-OK, thanks very much.

0:34:420:34:44

Leaving £155,000 to spare in the budget,

0:34:480:34:52

this Georgian country home comes with four reception rooms,

0:34:520:34:56

a kitchen breakfast room and six bedrooms.

0:34:560:34:59

There are 5½ acres of land,

0:34:590:35:01

with stables and a paddock.

0:35:010:35:04

-This is an amazing house.

-Yeah.

0:35:040:35:06

I was quite excited about it, initially, when I first saw it,

0:35:060:35:09

but we realise it's quite a large project to take on

0:35:090:35:13

and we need to think about it.

0:35:130:35:16

And there we have our Mystery.

0:35:200:35:22

You've seen all the houses, now.

0:35:220:35:24

You're a cup-of-tea man -

0:35:240:35:25

shall we go and get one and have a chat about what you might do next?

0:35:250:35:28

-Sounds like a plan.

-Yeah, let's go and do that.

0:35:280:35:30

You're buying.

0:35:300:35:31

Definitely, yeah!

0:35:310:35:32

The small Norfolk village of Thursford,

0:35:400:35:42

just a few miles inland from the coast,

0:35:420:35:45

is now home to a fascinating museum of vintage engines,

0:35:450:35:49

fairground rides and musical organs.

0:35:490:35:52

It all started with George Cushing, the son of a farm hand,

0:35:520:35:56

born here in 1904.

0:35:560:35:58

Young George developed a fascination with the sights

0:35:580:36:01

of the travelling fairs,

0:36:010:36:03

and, as a teenager, he travelled to King's Lynn to get a job

0:36:030:36:06

as the driver of a steam roller.

0:36:060:36:08

When the steam engines he drove were being sold off,

0:36:080:36:11

George decided to preserve them,

0:36:110:36:13

along with other soon-to-be-obsolete machines.

0:36:130:36:16

His farm in Thursford soon became a centre for

0:36:160:36:19

fellow mechanical enthusiasts,

0:36:190:36:21

who flocked to help repair, as well as view, his latest acquisitions.

0:36:210:36:26

The collection, featuring 47 steam engines,

0:36:260:36:29

is now in a museum cared for by his descendants,

0:36:290:36:32

including grandson Charlie Cushing,

0:36:320:36:34

'who's on hand to tell me more about grandfather George.'

0:36:340:36:38

Tell me all about the family collection -

0:36:380:36:40

it's really grown over the years.

0:36:400:36:42

When my grandfather, George, was very young,

0:36:420:36:45

he went to see numerous different fairs,

0:36:450:36:47

and there are memories he talked about when he'd go to the fair,

0:36:470:36:50

see all the showman's engines running all the lights,

0:36:500:36:53

the music and, you can imagine,

0:36:530:36:55

in those sort of days, you rarely left your own village,

0:36:550:36:57

to see all this wonderful, sort of, spectacle arrive,

0:36:570:37:01

it was quite incredible.

0:37:010:37:02

I think that's where that, sort of,

0:37:020:37:04

initial passion was really instilled, from quite a young age.

0:37:040:37:06

When the engines were being sold for scrap back in the 1930s,

0:37:060:37:11

they were being sold for, some of them, around about £20.

0:37:110:37:14

And he went on to buy three of his most enjoyable engines

0:37:140:37:18

that he really did love, and that was Alexandra, Unity and Victory.

0:37:180:37:23

How many members of the family have that passion for steam engines?

0:37:230:37:26

Well, there's three of us involved in the business.

0:37:260:37:29

And it's about more than steam engines, isn't it?

0:37:290:37:32

Yes, it is, yeah. We've got the mechanical organs, as well,

0:37:320:37:35

we've got ten of those.

0:37:350:37:37

If you just head on into the main museum,

0:37:370:37:38

then they'll be in there, playing for you.

0:37:380:37:40

-Wonderful, thank you very much, Charlie.

-Nice to meet you.

0:37:400:37:43

'Bob Ince, who was a schoolboy apprentice,

0:37:450:37:47

'first came to work on the museum's organ collection in the 1970s,

0:37:470:37:52

'and has been a regular ever since.

0:37:520:37:54

'He's showing me an organ which started life in a cinema,

0:37:540:37:58

'before it was adapted to play in a fairground ride.'

0:37:580:38:01

You've got to tell me how it works, cos I can see this whirring away.

0:38:010:38:04

This is the drive driving.

0:38:040:38:06

-OK.

-But the actual drive, here,

0:38:060:38:08

was usually done by what they call a model - a steam engine.

0:38:080:38:10

And you've got a lot of music, here.

0:38:100:38:13

There's an enormous amount.

0:38:130:38:14

Could you play anything, in theory,

0:38:140:38:16

that could be adapted for an organ?

0:38:160:38:18

You could, yes.

0:38:180:38:20

For instance, in Holland, when the Beatles were popular,

0:38:200:38:23

all the street organs had Beatles' tunes.

0:38:230:38:25

There is still a call for them.

0:38:250:38:27

But, of course, these books here are old,

0:38:270:38:29

and I think you could say some of them are 70, 80 years old.

0:38:290:38:33

They've done pretty well.

0:38:330:38:34

Yeah, they really have.

0:38:340:38:36

When the music goes through the key frame,

0:38:360:38:38

these little keys here, they're allowed to jump up.

0:38:380:38:41

They read the music. You can see the music's got slots.

0:38:410:38:43

Oh, so, this is the music.

0:38:430:38:45

This is some of the music,

0:38:450:38:47

-and all you do is put it in the frame, like that...

-Right.

0:38:470:38:52

..and pull the frame down.

0:38:520:38:55

ORGAN PLAYS LOUDLY

0:38:550:38:57

Well done.

0:38:570:38:58

'But the museum isn't only home to mechanical organs -

0:39:030:39:07

'Bob also helped to reassemble a mighty Wurlitzer,

0:39:070:39:10

'thought to be the fourth-largest in Europe

0:39:100:39:13

'and rescued from a 3,000-seater cinema in Leeds.

0:39:130:39:17

'Organist Robert Wolfe regularly performs on the instrument

0:39:170:39:20

'and has promised me a private demonstration.'

0:39:200:39:23

So, tell me, what's so special about the Wurlitzer?

0:39:240:39:27

It's just a magnificent-looking instrument,

0:39:270:39:30

and, I think, once you hear it, as well,

0:39:300:39:31

it's just a powerful, unique piece of art.

0:39:310:39:35

'Designed to replace the pit orchestras that once accompanied

0:39:360:39:40

'silent movies, at the peak of production in 1926,

0:39:400:39:44

'the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company was shipping one of these

0:39:440:39:46

'magnificent instruments a day.

0:39:460:39:49

'Their success was down to combining 2,000-year-old pipe organ technology

0:39:490:39:54

'with modern electronics, that allowed for adventurous,

0:39:540:39:57

'synthesised effects.'

0:39:570:39:59

The Wurlitzers were built to replace, like, a whole orchestra.

0:39:590:40:02

-Oh.

-So, you see all of the slots on the organ -

0:40:020:40:04

you have clarinets, saxophones, oboes, a string section.

0:40:040:40:08

-Basically, a whole orchestra.

-I see.

0:40:080:40:10

How do you get into playing an organ like this?

0:40:100:40:13

Well, many years ago, my father took me to a cinema, locally,

0:40:130:40:16

to an organ concert, when I was 12 years old,

0:40:160:40:19

and the first time I saw this organ rising out of the floor,

0:40:190:40:22

I was completely hooked.

0:40:220:40:23

And a piano just wouldn't have done?

0:40:230:40:25

No, no, it had to be the organ. It had to be the organ.

0:40:250:40:27

-Can we have a little preview?

-Of course you can. Yeah, definitely.

0:40:270:40:30

-That would be amazing.

-Definitely.

0:40:300:40:32

Thank you.

0:40:320:40:33

HE PLAYS Entry Of The Gladiators by Julius Fucik

0:40:360:40:39

'Robert first played here when he was 14,

0:40:440:40:46

'and almost 40 years later,

0:40:460:40:48

'it's easy to hear why this organ still has him hooked,

0:40:480:40:51

'enchanting audiences just as it has for generations gone by.'

0:40:510:40:56

Right, let's see if Keith and Karen like any of our properties

0:41:000:41:03

enough to make a move.

0:41:030:41:05

So, Keith and Karen,

0:41:120:41:14

what are you going to do next?

0:41:140:41:17

-Good question.

-What's the move?

0:41:170:41:18

For me, the home that I would like to go and investigate more about

0:41:180:41:23

is the cottage.

0:41:230:41:24

You know, I really loved the location of that place,

0:41:240:41:28

on top of the hill, with the sea views, etc.

0:41:280:41:30

It didn't quite have the land for the horses,

0:41:300:41:33

but, you know, it's something that maybe we could investigate about

0:41:330:41:36

acquiring some more land.

0:41:360:41:38

I loved the location of it, and it had wonderful views.

0:41:380:41:41

-Yeah.

-Erm, countryside views and sea views.

-Oh.

0:41:410:41:45

So you've almost got the best of Norfolk.

0:41:450:41:46

It looks like you feel very much at home, here.

0:41:460:41:49

-Yeah.

-It feels like the right place for you, certainly.

0:41:490:41:52

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-We feel it is.

0:41:520:41:53

I know Karen's been going on at me -

0:41:530:41:57

nagging me, if that's the right phrase...

0:41:570:41:59

-Is that the right phrase?

-Nudging, nudging you.

0:41:590:42:02

Nudging me in the direction of Norfolk,

0:42:020:42:04

for, you know, the last year or so,

0:42:040:42:06

and I guess now I'm coming round to the idea that it is

0:42:060:42:08

-the right place for us.

-I really hope so.

0:42:080:42:10

-Well, we wish you well, and keep us informed.

-Absolutely.

0:42:100:42:13

-Will do, yeah.

-We want to know how this all turns out.

0:42:130:42:15

-Yeah, we'll definitely do that.

-Yeah, we will.

0:42:150:42:17

But it's been an absolute pleasure.

0:42:170:42:18

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-We've enjoyed it.

-Thanks, thanks...

0:42:180:42:21

It's been a lovely couple of days of house-hunting with Keith and Karen,

0:42:250:42:29

and I'm so pleased that they'd like to explore at least one of our

0:42:290:42:32

properties a little bit further.

0:42:320:42:34

I think this process has helped them realise exactly where

0:42:340:42:38

they're willing to compromise,

0:42:380:42:40

and, fingers crossed, they'll be moving to a new home

0:42:400:42:42

with their horses very soon.

0:42:420:42:44

See you next time on Escape To The Country.

0:42:440:42:47

Keith and Karen made further inquiries about

0:42:480:42:50

the cottage in Dersingham,

0:42:500:42:52

but found the adjacent paddock space they needed

0:42:520:42:54

had just been rented out and was no longer available.

0:42:540:42:57

We wish them luck with their continued search.
