Welcome to Escape To The Country.

0:00:020:00:03

Now, how about having one of these in your back garden?

0:00:030:00:05

This beautiful folly was inspired by, some would argue, one of the

0:00:050:00:08

greatest architects of all time, the Italian Andrea Paladio.

0:00:080:00:13

But needless to say, we are not in Italy.

0:00:130:00:15

So, where are we?

0:00:150:00:16

Well, join me in just a moment and I'll tell you.

0:00:160:00:19

Today's house-hunters are looking to swap life in the Med for a cosy life

0:00:360:00:40

in the British countryside...

0:00:400:00:41

I'm very happy.

0:00:410:00:44

Yeah. Oh, oh, was that a very-happy-get-the-cheque-book-out?

0:00:440:00:47

Yeah.

0:00:470:00:48

..if our houses can convince them to make the move.

0:00:480:00:51

I told you roughly exactly what I wanted,

0:00:510:00:53

and you've found roughly exactly what I wanted.

0:00:530:00:56

THEY LAUGH

0:00:560:00:57

Well, today, we are in North Yorkshire,

0:01:010:01:02

within the magnificent surroundings of the Castle Howard estate.

0:01:020:01:06

And this is their Temple of the Four Winds.

0:01:060:01:09

It was inspired by the Italian architect

0:01:090:01:11

Andrea Paladio's building, the Villa Rotunda, just outside Vicenza.

0:01:110:01:16

But this one was designed and built by the Englishman John Vanburgh.

0:01:160:01:21

Now, it was of course during the 18th century that many estates right

0:01:210:01:24

across the UK saw an explosion in the business of building follies

0:01:240:01:28

just like this one, and that in itself was inspired

0:01:280:01:32

by many a young nobleman's trip to Europe on the grand tour,

0:01:320:01:36

to immerse themselves in the classical, cultural

0:01:360:01:39

and architectural history

0:01:390:01:41

that Europe had to offer, and this one is absolutely no exception.

0:01:410:01:45

It is of course the perfect place to start our own grand tour of

0:01:450:01:50

Yorkshire's property.

0:01:500:01:51

North Yorkshire is the largest county in England,

0:01:570:01:59

bordered by six other counties and the North Sea.

0:01:590:02:03

Within this region lies the North York Moors

0:02:040:02:06

and most of the Yorkshire Dales.

0:02:060:02:09

At Helmsley, there are the ruins of a medieval castle,

0:02:100:02:13

which was besieged during the English Civil War, when,

0:02:130:02:16

after a three-month stand-off, Cromwell's men finally succeeded

0:02:160:02:20

in blowing up the keep.

0:02:200:02:22

In the 18th century, the growing towns

0:02:220:02:25

and trade requirements of Yorkshire

0:02:250:02:27

gave rise to the development of canals.

0:02:270:02:29

The 127-mile man-made waterway of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

0:02:290:02:34

allowed limestone and coal to be transported,

0:02:340:02:37

to meet the rising demand for lime,

0:02:370:02:39

used in construction and agriculture.

0:02:390:02:42

And on Greenhow Hill lie the remains of Toft Gate Kiln,

0:02:420:02:46

which was built in the 1860s to produce quicklime.

0:02:460:02:50

No longer used for industry,

0:02:500:02:51

the canal system now provides a pretty feature in settlements

0:02:510:02:54

such as Hebden Bridge.

0:02:540:02:56

Originally a river crossing for pack horses laden with

0:02:560:02:59

cloth and food, the stone bridge dates

0:02:590:03:01

to the early part of the 16th century.

0:03:010:03:05

The 1970s and 1980s saw an influx of artists and writers,

0:03:050:03:09

and the market town is now filled with artisan shops and cafes.

0:03:090:03:13

So whether you're interested in medieval ruins, industrial heritage

0:03:160:03:19

or a bite to eat, North Yorkshire has plenty to offer.

0:03:190:03:24

Now, currently the average price of a detached property here,

0:03:310:03:33

in North Yorkshire, is just under £310,000.

0:03:330:03:37

That's some £15,000 below the national figure.

0:03:370:03:40

But, that said, it is the most expensive part of Yorkshire

0:03:400:03:44

as a whole, and the reason is simple.

0:03:440:03:46

Some 40% of this region is covered by not one but two National Parks,

0:03:460:03:52

which means it's also therefore the least industrialised part of

0:03:520:03:56

Yorkshire. As a result, you get loads of lovely landscape

0:03:560:03:59

and loads of wonderful property to choose from,

0:03:590:04:01

which is why today's buyers have decided to make a return

0:04:010:04:04

to Yorkshire as they look for their brand-new home in the country.

0:04:040:04:08

And it was on Yorkshire's turf where Robin and Pauline met 36 years ago,

0:04:090:04:14

when Pauline was working as a nurse and Robin, a trainee supermarket

0:04:140:04:17

-manager.

-I met her through her brother, who is my best friend.

0:04:170:04:21

-He was your best man.

-And he was my best man at our wedding as well.

0:04:220:04:26

She was out in Mexico, visiting her parents,

0:04:260:04:28

and she turned up in their study one day, and I just thought, "Boom!"

0:04:280:04:33

-Oh.

-We have one son, Jack,

0:04:330:04:36

who was educated in the UK even though we lived abroad,

0:04:360:04:39

and now he works in Canada, hopefully on his way back to Europe.

0:04:390:04:43

Despite being born and bred in Yorkshire,

0:04:450:04:47

Pauline and Robin spent married life living elsewhere.

0:04:470:04:50

For the past decade,

0:04:500:04:51

they've been based on the Spanish island of Majorca,

0:04:510:04:54

but although benefiting from idyllic surroundings,

0:04:540:04:56

they feel that something is missing.

0:04:560:04:58

We live in the country.

0:04:580:05:00

We don't have people anywhere near us.

0:05:000:05:01

We do have neighbours,

0:05:010:05:03

but they are an acre, or five, or ten, away from us.

0:05:030:05:06

In Majorca, we sit on over seven acres.

0:05:060:05:09

We don't need that space.

0:05:090:05:10

We've got a very large, sprawling house.

0:05:100:05:12

We don't need that now.

0:05:120:05:14

I want neighbours, I want to be in a village.

0:05:140:05:16

We miss England, family, friends,

0:05:160:05:20

all that whole package.

0:05:200:05:22

And when it comes to returning back to Blighty, there's only one area

0:05:240:05:27

-that really cut it.

-I think once you are a Yorkshire person,

0:05:270:05:30

you're always a Yorkshire person.

0:05:300:05:32

We've got a very emotional connection with the county.

0:05:320:05:34

For me, the countryside is just so beautiful, so green,

0:05:340:05:38

and it's undulating, it's interesting.

0:05:380:05:41

And for me it's the people, I think, as well.

0:05:410:05:44

It's the culture of the Yorkshire people,

0:05:440:05:47

which is my DNA, and I miss it.

0:05:470:05:51

The plan is that their return to the motherland will also herald a

0:05:510:05:54

different way of life.

0:05:540:05:56

I want to get involved a little bit with the community,

0:05:560:05:59

maybe do some voluntary work.

0:05:590:06:01

I would really love to do some voluntary nursing,

0:06:010:06:04

cos I used to be a nurse.

0:06:040:06:05

Just becoming more of an English community lady, really.

0:06:050:06:10

We really want to do things like join the rambling society

0:06:100:06:15

and pick sloes and your brambles in autumn.

0:06:150:06:18

Maybe do a cooking course together.

0:06:180:06:20

-Yeah.

-Of good Yorkshire cooking.

0:06:200:06:21

It's a great cuisine.

0:06:210:06:23

And these things we just don't have in Spain, so we're raring to go.

0:06:230:06:26

But most importantly, it's about finding their forever home.

0:06:280:06:31

We've moved so many times, probably about 13 times,

0:06:310:06:35

and hopefully this will be the last, so this will count.

0:06:350:06:39

This really is the full circle, we feel.

0:06:390:06:41

Home is home.

0:06:410:06:42

Robin and Pauline are open to living anywhere in the North Yorkshire

0:06:510:06:54

countryside that is within reach of a market town,

0:06:540:06:57

but before we start looking at houses,

0:06:570:06:59

I'm welcoming them back to Yorkshire

0:06:590:07:01

to discuss the type of property they are hoping to find.

0:07:010:07:04

-Hello, Pauline.

-Hello.

0:07:050:07:07

Very nice to see you.

0:07:070:07:09

Hello, Robin, nice to see you.

0:07:090:07:10

Well, guys, welcome back to Yorkshire.

0:07:100:07:12

Cos this is where it all started for you, isn't it?

0:07:120:07:14

-It is.

-Mm-hm. I know you were both born here,

0:07:140:07:17

not a million miles away from where we are at the moment.

0:07:170:07:19

Do you feel that draw of the old home country?

0:07:190:07:22

Oh, yeah, definitely.

0:07:220:07:23

I can't wait for it. I'm almost yearning for colder days,

0:07:230:07:27

rainy days, where you just batten your hatches, stay in or wrap up,

0:07:270:07:31

go out for a lovely walk.

0:07:310:07:32

So there is something about the seasonal aspect

0:07:320:07:35

to living in the UK that's obviously tempting you as well.

0:07:350:07:38

Yeah, definitely.

0:07:380:07:39

Really very much so.

0:07:390:07:41

Now, you've already had a chance to look online

0:07:410:07:43

at the sort of properties that might work for you.

0:07:430:07:46

Can you describe your ideal Yorkshire home?

0:07:460:07:49

Well, I love sort of traditional old buildings,

0:07:490:07:53

which have either been renovated and they're really nice inside,

0:07:530:07:56

big reception rooms, I love halls with stone floors.

0:07:560:08:00

We love to cook, so a good kitchen is important for us.

0:08:000:08:03

-Mm-hm.

-I mean, currently you've got seven acres in Majorca.

0:08:030:08:05

-Yeah, we have.

-Do you need seven acres here?

0:08:050:08:07

Certainly not. We'd like a decent garden.

0:08:070:08:09

We have dogs, we want somewhere we can stretch our legs a bit,

0:08:090:08:11

but we certainly don't need the size of that.

0:08:110:08:13

Let's talk about the budget, then, Robin.

0:08:130:08:15

How much do you want to spend on this move?

0:08:150:08:17

Well, about 700.

0:08:170:08:19

£700,000, I mean, it's a meaty sum of money.

0:08:190:08:22

Yeah, and our first house in Yorkshire was 13,000.

0:08:220:08:26

13,000, wow, how times have changed.

0:08:260:08:29

-And we were delighted with it!

-Yeah, loved it.

-Well,

0:08:290:08:31

let's hope we can find you something

0:08:310:08:32

that you will be equally as delighted with this week.

0:08:320:08:35

-So, I think we should get going.

-Brilliant.

-Yes!

0:08:350:08:38

Pauline and Robin have a budget of up to £700,000 to find their home

0:08:400:08:44

back in Yorkshire.

0:08:440:08:46

They'd like a traditional building with large reception rooms,

0:08:460:08:50

a big kitchen, a reasonable-sized garden for the dogs,

0:08:500:08:52

and somewhere with community on their doorstep.

0:08:520:08:55

We've selected a great choice of houses to show them,

0:08:550:08:59

each offering a different take on their wish list.

0:08:590:09:02

After every viewing, I'll be asking them to guess the price

0:09:020:09:05

before I reveal it.

0:09:050:09:06

Our final property will be the Mystery House,

0:09:070:09:10

where we'll be pulling out all the stops to pull on their heartstrings.

0:09:100:09:14

We are starting our search in the small village of Harome.

0:09:230:09:26

Located in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire,

0:09:270:09:30

its name simply means "stones".

0:09:300:09:33

And there are stone-built period homes throughout the village,

0:09:330:09:35

many of which are listed.

0:09:350:09:37

The local church was completed in 1862 and designed by

0:09:380:09:41

Charles Barry Jr.

0:09:410:09:44

The son of the architect responsible

0:09:440:09:45

for the rebuilt Houses of Parliament,

0:09:450:09:47

he evidently shared some

0:09:470:09:49

of his father's Victorian Gothic influence.

0:09:490:09:51

Facilities in the village include a country hotel serving meals,

0:09:540:09:57

from where it's just a six-minute walk

0:09:570:09:59

to the property we've come to see.

0:09:590:10:01

Well, I don't think anything is quite as quintessentially English

0:10:030:10:06

in terms of its architecture as a thatch, so how about that one?

0:10:060:10:10

Impressive, I like it.

0:10:100:10:11

On the outside, so far so good.

0:10:110:10:13

-Yeah.

-The nice thing about this one is that it's only 13 years old.

0:10:130:10:16

Really? Doesn't look it, does it? It looks like a very old property.

0:10:160:10:19

And as a result, it's got modern proportions,

0:10:190:10:22

which you don't always find in what looks like a period property,

0:10:220:10:26

particularly with a thatched roof.

0:10:260:10:28

-Lovely.

-Come on, let's have a look inside.

-Come on.

0:10:280:10:30

This modern-build character property has been thatched with reed,

0:10:310:10:35

an alternative material to straw,

0:10:350:10:37

although the ridge will need attending to every 20 years or so.

0:10:370:10:41

Pauline and Robin have said they want to downsize,

0:10:420:10:44

but let's see if that plays out as we start our tour.

0:10:440:10:47

Very grand big door.

0:10:500:10:52

-Oh.

-Come on into here.

0:10:520:10:53

-Oh.

-There.

0:10:540:10:55

What do you think?

0:10:550:10:57

Nice first impression.

0:10:570:10:59

-I'm drawn towards the kitchen.

-Are you? I was going to give you

0:10:590:11:01

a choice as to whether we went that way, into the living room first,

0:11:010:11:04

or that way, into the kitchen,

0:11:040:11:05

but you've probably answered that question.

0:11:050:11:07

-Much obliged.

-Right, come on, then.

0:11:070:11:09

Let's have a look in here.

0:11:090:11:10

Mm.

0:11:110:11:13

-Your thoughts?

-It's quite...

0:11:130:11:15

-..smallish, I think.

-You see, I was waiting for the "small" word.

0:11:160:11:20

Yeah, it's smaller than what we had envisaged.

0:11:200:11:23

I mean, it's a beautifully done kitchen, that's for sure,

0:11:230:11:27

but for us it's just not the space we're after.

0:11:270:11:30

I mean, you have got quite a big utility area through there -

0:11:300:11:33

coat/boot room, dog room.

0:11:330:11:35

-Yeah.

-Downstairs loo, etc.

0:11:350:11:38

I mean, you have got a separate dining room across the hallway.

0:11:380:11:40

Let's have a quick peek in the living room.

0:11:400:11:42

-OK, after you.

-Let's go forth.

0:11:420:11:44

-Darling.

-So a downsize too far so far for these Yorkshire returnees,

0:11:440:11:50

but let's see what they make of the rest as we head to the rear,

0:11:500:11:53

where a sizeable reception room offers triple aspect.

0:11:530:11:56

Mm!

0:11:560:11:58

Lovely. Very nice room.

0:11:580:12:00

-Nice and light.

-Big enough?

0:12:000:12:02

I think the size is big enough for me.

0:12:020:12:04

I would like a little bigger room.

0:12:040:12:06

-Yeah.

-I must admit.

0:12:060:12:09

There may be some readjusting from those Mediterranean proportions of

0:12:090:12:12

Majorca to those of a typical Yorkshire country home,

0:12:120:12:16

but upstairs there is one more bedroom than they asked for.

0:12:160:12:20

There are four in total, each with its own en suite.

0:12:200:12:24

A corner room is filled with light from two aspects

0:12:240:12:27

and comes with its own shower room.

0:12:270:12:29

Behind this is another guest room,

0:12:290:12:31

also with an en-suite shower room.

0:12:310:12:33

A fully tiled family bathroom features a roll-top bath

0:12:340:12:38

and shower cubicle,

0:12:380:12:39

and this also acts as a Jack and Jill en suite

0:12:390:12:42

for the largest bedroom.

0:12:420:12:44

Then there's the room we've earmarked for them.

0:12:440:12:46

Now, because all of these bedrooms have en suites,

0:12:480:12:51

trying to pick a master...

0:12:510:12:52

..is anyone's guess, really.

0:12:530:12:55

I've gone for this one. It's perhaps not the biggest, but it has a very,

0:12:550:12:58

very generous en suite, with a very funky shower arrangement.

0:12:580:13:01

I think in terms of proportions...

0:13:010:13:03

-Nice sizes.

-..it kind of works.

0:13:030:13:05

Quite unusual to find a house with four bedroom en suites.

0:13:050:13:08

The joy of this one to me is what it offers you upstairs, in particular.

0:13:080:13:11

Yeah, you can tell the house has a lot of love in it.

0:13:110:13:13

It's been very well made. It feels warm, it feels well insulated,

0:13:130:13:17

-lived in.

-OK,

0:13:170:13:18

let's just finish off in the garden and we'll talk about the price,

0:13:180:13:22

because we are reintroducing you to the property market here,

0:13:220:13:25

so it will be interesting to see what you make of this one.

0:13:250:13:28

So a mixed response to our first Yorkshire offering,

0:13:300:13:33

and outside, the grounds are a good deal more modest

0:13:330:13:36

than the seven acres

0:13:360:13:37

they are used to. An integrated double garage is found to the front,

0:13:370:13:41

whilst at the rear there is a secluded south-facing patio

0:13:410:13:45

and a large lawn, surrounded by mature shrubs and trees.

0:13:450:13:48

I am taking seriously this idea that you want it to be a little more

0:13:490:13:52

manageable, but size wise, Robin?

0:13:520:13:55

I think it's a bit too shrunk.

0:13:550:13:58

-Is it? OK.

-For me.

0:13:580:13:59

It's nicely done, it's got some lovely things in it,

0:13:590:14:01

but with that the dogs I think it would be a bit too tight.

0:14:010:14:04

I find it quite manageable. You know,

0:14:040:14:06

as we get a bit older, we'll want to do less and less.

0:14:060:14:08

But of course you would do, sorry to interrupt,

0:14:080:14:10

cos it's me that's managing it.

0:14:100:14:11

THEY LAUGH

0:14:110:14:14

I can see this is a debate that's gone on for some years.

0:14:140:14:17

I'm going to park that one for just a moment because I really

0:14:170:14:19

want to get onto what you think this might be on the market for.

0:14:190:14:22

Oh, erm, I would say probably 695.

0:14:220:14:29

695, yeah.

0:14:290:14:30

I think we're pretty up there.

0:14:300:14:32

Mm-hm.

0:14:320:14:33

I'm going to go for 600.

0:14:330:14:34

Well, I can happily report that you're both a little bit

0:14:340:14:37

out of touch on this occasion,

0:14:370:14:39

because this is on the market for £578,000.

0:14:390:14:43

-Crikey, that surprises me.

-I'm very surprised, yeah.

0:14:430:14:45

-Very. A great start, I think.

-Yeah, I'm very optimistic.

0:14:450:14:48

-Very good.

-Right, then, off you go, have a look around,

0:14:480:14:50

see what you get for your money. I'll find you a little bit later on.

0:14:500:14:53

-Thank you.

-Thanks, Jules.

0:14:530:14:54

This recently built thatched home

0:14:540:14:57

is an impressive £120,000 below budget,

0:14:570:15:01

yet offers a country kitchen and breakfast room

0:15:010:15:03

and two further reception rooms, all with underfloor heating.

0:15:030:15:07

Plus, there are four en-suite double bedrooms, and the low-maintenance

0:15:080:15:12

garden is south facing.

0:15:120:15:13

-Mm.

-So dining room, I presume.

0:15:150:15:17

Mm, wouldn't use it as a dining room though, would we?

0:15:170:15:20

Or would we have it as a snug?

0:15:200:15:21

Maybe a snug, yeah.

0:15:210:15:22

Yeah? I mean, I love the views out the front.

0:15:220:15:25

I mean, that is Yorkshire for me.

0:15:250:15:26

Across the fields, out onto the woods.

0:15:260:15:28

-Beautiful.

-Scale-wise, some of the rooms, we'd need a bigger size.

0:15:280:15:32

That's what we're after. But it's very light.

0:15:320:15:35

I love the finish of it.

0:15:350:15:36

Somebody's really cared for this house.

0:15:360:15:38

It's been done very nicely downstairs and upstairs.

0:15:380:15:41

I like the garden.

0:15:410:15:42

I love the idea of having a few mature trees in there.

0:15:420:15:45

Garden size, it's nice, yeah.

0:15:450:15:48

But I need something larger.

0:15:480:15:49

For us, I think, you know,

0:15:490:15:51

coming back to England, looking for that quintessential house,

0:15:510:15:54

we're more into something old-ish, something that, perhaps,

0:15:540:15:59

has been renovated inside...

0:15:590:16:01

..and got a bit more soul, a bit more character.

0:16:030:16:05

Right.

0:16:050:16:07

We've got to get cracking, chaps.

0:16:070:16:09

-All done?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:16:090:16:10

Excellent, OK. So, that was the first one.

0:16:100:16:13

Well, good job there's a few more on the list, I suppose.

0:16:130:16:16

-Come on, let's go.

-Thanks very much.

-Thanks.

0:16:160:16:18

With a landscape rich in agriculture,

0:16:260:16:28

Yorkshire is a culinary heaven,

0:16:280:16:30

perfect for savouring local produce,

0:16:300:16:32

which hasn't had to travel far from ground to plate.

0:16:320:16:35

And staying in the village of Harome,

0:16:370:16:38

just a stone's throw from our first property,

0:16:380:16:41

keen cooks Pauline and Robin have come to the 14th-century

0:16:410:16:45

Star Inn for a cookery lesson.

0:16:450:16:47

Here, chef and proud Yorkshireman Andrew Pern has held a Michelin star

0:16:470:16:51

for 13 years, in recognition of his modern Yorkshire cuisine.

0:16:510:16:55

You've got an inspirational garden here, I must say.

0:16:550:16:58

What have you actually got growing here?

0:16:580:17:00

Growing in the garden this time of year, I mean obviously,

0:17:000:17:03

we're into the darker months if you'd like.

0:17:030:17:05

We've got some of the brassicas down at the far end. The red curly kale.

0:17:050:17:09

We've got some pumpkins, some squashes.

0:17:090:17:10

We have here 15 varieties of apple within the garden,

0:17:100:17:13

all native to Yorkshire.

0:17:130:17:15

And the world-famous rhubarb from Yorkshire.

0:17:150:17:17

And what are we cooking today?

0:17:170:17:19

Today, we are cooking a saddle of venison from local estates,

0:17:190:17:22

-from where we are here.

-Lovely.

0:17:220:17:25

Everything grown here is used solely in the restaurant's kitchen.

0:17:250:17:28

This is the venison. Very healthy.

0:17:300:17:32

You see there is no fat in there at all, really.

0:17:320:17:34

-No marbling at all, no.

-No, exactly. With it being without fat,

0:17:340:17:37

it doesn't baste itself, the meat,

0:17:370:17:38

so you need to undercook it a bit more,

0:17:380:17:40

so a sort of rare, medium rare, is about right.

0:17:400:17:42

But you'd recommend that at home as well, the same principle?

0:17:420:17:45

-Definitely.

-Andrew sprinkles ground black pepper on the meat before

0:17:450:17:49

rubbing in a little salt and placing it into a hot pan.

0:17:490:17:52

Two or three minutes each side.

0:17:520:17:54

Then in goes a dash of sherry to caramelise it.

0:17:560:17:59

OK, so for the sauce... going to reduce down some port.

0:18:040:18:07

Splash of red wine. And here we've got some orange zest,

0:18:090:18:12

which is slightly caramelised.

0:18:120:18:14

And joining the meat are baby leeks and carrots to char in the pan.

0:18:140:18:18

Tip him up under here, and we're all ready to go.

0:18:190:18:22

-OK?

-Smells fantastic.

-It does.

0:18:220:18:25

Once a good handful of kale has cooked down,

0:18:250:18:28

the dish is ready to be plated

0:18:280:18:29

for Pauline and Robin to sample.

0:18:290:18:31

Reduced mulled wine is squeezed onto the plate, along with some parkin,

0:18:330:18:37

which is a type of fruit cake and a local speciality.

0:18:370:18:41

Next, it's the venison and veg and creamy kale.

0:18:410:18:45

-Mm.

-Nice?

-Wow.

-Perfect.

0:18:500:18:53

-That is lovely.

-Do you see what I mean about the rich flavours?

0:18:530:18:55

-Mm.

-It's like comfort food at its best, isn't it?

0:18:550:18:57

-That is so good.

-Fantastic.

0:18:570:18:59

-That's all right. That's what I'm here for.

-Thank you so much.

0:18:590:19:01

Thank you for visiting. I hope you find somewhere nice in the area.

0:19:010:19:04

-Thank you.

-I do, we'll be back.

0:19:040:19:06

So, after an authentic taste of home-grown Yorkshire fare,

0:19:080:19:12

we're back on the house-hunt.

0:19:120:19:14

We're taking our search to the village of Pickhill.

0:19:230:19:27

Located in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire,

0:19:270:19:30

in Victorian times, brick and tile houses grouped around an irregular

0:19:300:19:34

hollow, which later formed the village green.

0:19:340:19:37

To the north-eastern side,

0:19:370:19:38

the village church dates to the 12th century and

0:19:380:19:42

features Norman arches at the door and entry to the chancel.

0:19:420:19:45

Facilities here include a country inn with restaurant

0:19:450:19:48

that's just a short distance from the house we've come to view.

0:19:480:19:51

Right, come in and have a look at this, because this is quite unusual.

0:19:530:19:59

-That's lovely.

-Very nice from the outside, this.

0:19:590:20:01

-Very nice.

-This is the old bit.

0:20:010:20:02

So this is about 1780.

0:20:020:20:04

You can probably just about make out the original positioning

0:20:040:20:07

of the front door there. And then, rather cleverly, they've added

0:20:070:20:10

effectively as much again to the left,

0:20:100:20:13

graced with that fabulous oak porch.

0:20:130:20:16

And the whole thing now forms a courtyard property behind it,

0:20:160:20:21

-so it's a U-shape.

-Oh, OK.

0:20:210:20:23

-Mm.

-All right? Only recently finished, so it's all brand-new.

0:20:230:20:26

-It looks great from the outside.

-Yeah, looking forward to seeing it.

0:20:260:20:30

-I think this could...

-I do.

-..ring a few bells.

0:20:300:20:32

-I'm hoping.

-Are you?

-Yeah. Let's have a look inside.

0:20:320:20:35

-Come on.

-Come on.

0:20:350:20:36

A promising arrival,

0:20:360:20:38

and we start our tour inside this recently renovated

0:20:380:20:41

period home via a bright central entrance hall.

0:20:410:20:44

We're heading into the newer wing, where a kitchen/breakfast room

0:20:450:20:49

opens out to a dining area and sunroom.

0:20:490:20:52

So, I'm hoping that this is the sort of kitchen...

0:20:540:20:57

..that you were thinking of. Look, the thumbs are up.

0:20:580:21:00

Come over here because, again,

0:21:000:21:02

you get the idea of how they've created this U-shaped arrangement,

0:21:020:21:06

this sort of dining area, family space up there too...

0:21:060:21:09

-Yeah.

-..connecting it to this rather lovely kitchen,

0:21:090:21:12

-which I think is kind of you.

-It's really nice.

0:21:120:21:15

-I love it.

-You want me to buy it now?

0:21:150:21:17

This is exciting.

0:21:180:21:20

-It's beautiful.

-Yeah. Very pleasing to the eye.

0:21:200:21:22

It's giving you modern proportions in terms of the kitchen.

0:21:220:21:25

-Yeah, very modern.

-And the way this sort of family wing works.

0:21:250:21:28

And this is what we're searching for.

0:21:280:21:30

This flow for us I think really fits...

0:21:300:21:31

-Yeah, it works.

-Works.

-Mm-hm.

0:21:310:21:33

-No, I'm...very happy.

-Yeah.

0:21:330:21:36

Oh, was that a very-happy-get-the-cheque-book-out?

0:21:360:21:39

Yeah, OK.

0:21:390:21:40

Well, if you like this, I think you'll love the rest of it.

0:21:400:21:43

Let's go and have a look at the 18th century, that's through here.

0:21:430:21:45

Let's go back in time.

0:21:450:21:47

So, a great start, thanks to the spacious rooms

0:21:470:21:50

in the newer part of this home.

0:21:500:21:52

Back across in the original half,

0:21:520:21:54

two areas have been knocked together

0:21:540:21:57

-to provide a generous reception room.

-Mm.

0:21:570:22:01

Wow. It's a nice big room, though, isn't it?

0:22:010:22:03

-Lovely.

-Yeah?

-For such an old property.

0:22:030:22:05

-Oh, look at the fire.

-Yes, you see.

0:22:050:22:07

Oh, yeah. And I like the simplicity of that fire, too.

0:22:070:22:10

-Yeah, it is.

-Yeah.

-And I love the height of the windows.

0:22:100:22:13

When you're sitting down, you've just got a clear view outside there.

0:22:130:22:16

No, lovely. You've done well.

0:22:160:22:19

-Yes?

-Mm-hm.

0:22:190:22:20

-I could see you here, actually.

-Yeah, I like it.

0:22:200:22:22

The remainder of this wing provides more reception space.

0:22:230:22:26

There's a study with doors out to the rear courtyard,

0:22:260:22:30

and a games room.

0:22:300:22:32

The ground floor also has a utility room next to a cloakroom.

0:22:320:22:35

Back in the sitting room, stairs lead up to the five-bedroomed

0:22:360:22:39

accommodation.

0:22:390:22:40

The largest of the guest bedrooms sits under the eaves.

0:22:420:22:44

Then there are two further good-sized

0:22:460:22:48

bright and comfortable guest doubles,

0:22:480:22:50

and a smaller single bedroom.

0:22:500:22:52

The family bathroom comes with a corner shower and bath,

0:22:520:22:56

which just leaves the final bedroom, the master.

0:22:560:22:59

So, this is five of five.

0:22:590:23:02

This is yours.

0:23:020:23:04

-Oh, lovely.

-That's very nice.

0:23:040:23:06

Yeah, very nice. Absolutely ideal for us.

0:23:060:23:08

And this is the master because it's the only one with en suite, in which

0:23:080:23:12

-you've got a roll-top bath.

-Mm-hm.

-And I'm a bath man.

0:23:120:23:14

So that suits me just fine.

0:23:140:23:16

I'm thinking - get rid of the cupboard

0:23:160:23:19

and maybe make next door into a dressing room.

0:23:190:23:22

-Ah, the smaller box...

-Yeah.

-And go through to that?

0:23:220:23:24

-Yeah.

-They're only stud walls up here.

-Yeah, that's what I thought.

0:23:240:23:27

-Bearing in mind this is the newer extension.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:23:270:23:29

So it could all be done in time.

0:23:290:23:31

So you have a bit more room, cos it is a little bit...

0:23:310:23:33

Maybe play guess the price first...

0:23:330:23:35

THEY LAUGH

0:23:350:23:37

Yeah, let's see what it's going to cost you

0:23:370:23:39

before we start redesigning it.

0:23:390:23:41

I'll take it as a good sign that Pauline already has designs

0:23:410:23:44

on this one.

0:23:440:23:45

And outside, we really get a sense of the geography of this property,

0:23:450:23:50

with the U-shaped layout cradling a rear courtyard...

0:23:500:23:53

..which opens onto further landscaped gardens.

0:23:540:23:57

Feels a bit sort of Mediterranean, dare I say it.

0:23:570:23:59

-Yeah.

-I think it does, yeah.

-A bit of a sun trap.

0:23:590:24:01

And you've got a bit of green space there for the dogs.

0:24:010:24:03

-Yeah.

-Mm-hm.

-You've got a dedicated barbecue area up there.

0:24:030:24:06

-Yeah.

-And then more bits of seating,

0:24:060:24:07

as you can see, summer house up there, and so on.

0:24:070:24:09

-Yeah, it's really quite something. It really is.

-So,

0:24:090:24:12

let's have a think about how much this rather inviting house might be,

0:24:120:24:16

-Robin.

-I think you've gone over budget on this one.

0:24:160:24:18

-OK.

-I think 749.

0:24:180:24:23

-OK.

-I hope.

-Way over budget.

0:24:230:24:27

-But, you know...

-Yeah!

0:24:270:24:28

..doable, I'm sure. OK, 749.

0:24:280:24:30

Mm-hm.

0:24:300:24:31

I am going to go for a more hopeful 650.

0:24:310:24:37

650. You are both wildly wrong, I'm afraid.

0:24:370:24:40

-Lovely.

-Because this could be yours for...

0:24:400:24:42

..£565,000.

0:24:430:24:46

Right, well, let's shake on that one, then, Jules.

0:24:460:24:49

Can I have a seat?

0:24:490:24:50

You may indeed.

0:24:500:24:52

-Oh, my word.

-Shocking.

-Comfortably under budget.

0:24:520:24:56

-Mm.

-I think you've found a real gem here.

0:24:560:24:58

-Robin.

-Darling.

0:24:580:24:59

THEY LAUGH

0:24:590:25:01

Well, I'm going to give you plenty of time to look around here,

0:25:010:25:04

and I will find you somewhere in this sprawling complex

0:25:040:25:06

-a little bit later on.

-Lovely, yeah.

-Thanks very much.

-Thank you so much. Really like it.

0:25:060:25:10

-It's all right.

-Thanks, Jules. Brilliant find.

-Absolute pleasure.

0:25:100:25:13

-Go on, off you go.

-Thanks.

-Take your time.

0:25:130:25:14

We shall give you as much time as you need because,

0:25:140:25:17

well, let's be honest,

0:25:170:25:18

you can't really rush a good thing.

0:25:180:25:20

Sitting well below their maximum budget of £700,000,

0:25:220:25:26

this extended 18th-century brick-built home

0:25:260:25:28

has a beautifully fitted

0:25:280:25:30

open-plan kitchen/breakfast room as well as a large reception room and

0:25:300:25:34

dedicated dining area.

0:25:340:25:36

There are five bedrooms including the master en suite, and the house

0:25:360:25:39

centres on a very private rear courtyard.

0:25:390:25:42

Plus, it's in the heart of a pretty Yorkshire village.

0:25:420:25:45

Mm. Nice little study-cum-snug.

0:25:470:25:50

It's lovely, isn't it? Lovely.

0:25:500:25:52

I love the fireplace and the beam across the top.

0:25:520:25:54

Oh, yeah. Well, I have to say,

0:25:540:25:56

as soon as I walked into the house, I just thought,

0:25:560:25:59

"Mm, this is a contender."

0:25:590:26:01

It's lovely and warm, it's got a welcoming feeling.

0:26:010:26:03

And then when I turned the corner into the kitchen, it was just like,

0:26:030:26:07

"Hello, this feels like it could be home."

0:26:070:26:10

I thought the kitchen had a wow factor to me.

0:26:100:26:12

I like the way it ran off to a dining area

0:26:120:26:14

and a bit of a snuggy thing

0:26:140:26:15

that I can just see us - TV there, and dinner on your knees,

0:26:150:26:18

which everybody loves. Brilliant house.

0:26:180:26:21

I can't really fault it.

0:26:210:26:22

-After you, madam.

-Thank you.

0:26:250:26:27

-There we go, Robin.

-Thank you, Jules.

0:26:270:26:29

Well, without wishing to be too technical, I would say that was a...

0:26:290:26:33

..fairly successful house tour.

0:26:330:26:35

-I think you're right.

-And I think a pretty successful day so far,

0:26:350:26:39

which probably means we've all deserved a pint of something local.

0:26:390:26:43

How about that?

0:26:430:26:45

-Absolutely.

-Come on.

0:26:450:26:46

We're in North Yorkshire helping Robin and Pauline

0:27:040:27:07

move from Majorca back to the region of their birth.

0:27:070:27:10

We've already viewed some great property for their budget

0:27:100:27:12

of £700,000,

0:27:120:27:14

but there's more to see, including the Mystery House,

0:27:140:27:17

which proves that first appearances don't always count.

0:27:170:27:20

I didn't expect this.

0:27:210:27:22

I really didn't.

0:27:230:27:25

Plus, I earn my wings in a World War I fighter plane.

0:27:250:27:28

-Clear prop.

-Prop clear.

0:27:280:27:31

Well, we have, to be honest,

0:27:360:27:37

not a bad start to our final day of house-hunting

0:27:370:27:40

here in North Yorkshire,

0:27:400:27:41

which means, of course, we have just one more property to come.

0:27:410:27:44

Now, having got to know Robin and Pauline just a little bit better,

0:27:440:27:47

I'm pretty optimistic at this stage that our Mystery House could embody

0:27:470:27:50

everything they've been hoping to find.

0:27:500:27:52

But let's face it, it has got

0:27:520:27:54

some competition from what we saw yesterday.

0:27:540:27:56

So, will it better it? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

0:27:560:27:59

Our mystery property is in the tiny hamlet of Heyshaw.

0:28:060:28:09

Located in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

0:28:110:28:15

where the River Nidd has been dammed to create a reservoir,

0:28:150:28:18

the area includes the town of Pateley Bridge,

0:28:180:28:20

which has a wide selection of places to pick up provisions.

0:28:200:28:23

But three miles away,

0:28:250:28:27

in the stunning surroundings of the Nidderdale countryside,

0:28:270:28:30

it's time to unmask our Mystery House.

0:28:300:28:32

Well, guys, at long last, I can reveal our Mystery House,

0:28:330:28:36

and I'm thinking this is probably more what you had in mind.

0:28:360:28:41

Absolutely. Definitely.

0:28:410:28:42

100%. Absolutely beautiful by the looks outside.

0:28:420:28:46

-What's Robin thinking?

-Yeah, absolute wow.

-Yeah.

0:28:460:28:49

I mean, it's a quintessential slice of Dales architecture, isn't it,

0:28:490:28:53

-really?

-Yeah, it is.

-It really is.

0:28:530:28:55

From here, you can see, it's a building that's sort of evolved

0:28:550:28:58

over time but has been beautifully done.

0:28:580:29:00

I just love the setting.

0:29:000:29:01

Rolling hills, the stone walls, plus, also, a herd of ten alpacas,

0:29:010:29:06

which they've got on it. You can just see one.

0:29:060:29:08

Yeah, I thought, "That's a strange sheep."

0:29:080:29:10

-Yeah, you see them now.

-And they could come with it.

0:29:100:29:13

-Good!

-I'd be up for it.

0:29:130:29:15

I know you wanted to buy a house, but you might just get yourself

0:29:150:29:18

a bit of farming in the process.

0:29:180:29:20

Well, if the inside reflects the outside...

0:29:200:29:22

Yeah.

0:29:220:29:23

-That's a property.

-Let's get in and have a look, shall we?

0:29:230:29:26

-Mm.

-Please.

0:29:260:29:27

Originally a barn, in 2009,

0:29:280:29:31

this stone building was converted into a unique home.

0:29:310:29:35

Now, Robin and Pauline SAY they want to downsize, but they may have a

0:29:350:29:40

change of heart when they step inside our Mystery House.

0:29:400:29:43

-Ooh. Ooh.

-I'm not going to say anything.

-Ooh.

-You tell me.

0:29:430:29:47

I didn't expect this.

0:29:490:29:50

I would never expect marble floors on the floor of an old barn

0:29:500:29:53

up in this part of the world, that's for sure.

0:29:530:29:55

Yeah. Travertine all over the place in this particular conversion.

0:29:550:30:00

I mean, it's a barn conversion,

0:30:000:30:02

but when you walk into this very grand sort

0:30:020:30:04

-of dining hall, I suppose...

-Yeah.

0:30:040:30:06

..you could be forgiven for thinking you were inside something more

0:30:060:30:09

-Georgian.

-Wow, very grand.

0:30:090:30:11

Speechless. I can't wait to have a look at the rest of it.

0:30:110:30:14

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-Well, that way, down the steps, is the main living room.

0:30:140:30:18

-Yes.

-Mm-hm.

-But we'll save that and we'll go to the kitchen/diner,

0:30:180:30:21

which is this way.

0:30:210:30:23

A small corridor from this room

0:30:240:30:26

passes a utility and ground-floor cloak

0:30:260:30:28

and shower room and takes us

0:30:280:30:29

to a bright and spacious kitchen/breakfast room.

0:30:290:30:33

-Ooh.

-Yeah.

-Very smart.

0:30:340:30:38

-Very nice.

-Yeah. That's beautiful.

0:30:380:30:40

And the aspects are - window, window, window, you know.

0:30:400:30:43

Wow, fantastic views.

0:30:430:30:44

Yes, so you can keep an eye on your alpacas.

0:30:440:30:46

-There they are.

-As they come nibbling at the window. Yeah.

0:30:460:30:49

-Gosh, the views are amazing, aren't they?

-Yeah, I think this is...

0:30:490:30:52

-I'm very impressed by this.

-Yeah.

-Happy so far?

0:30:520:30:55

-Very.

-Very, very.

0:30:550:30:56

-Come and have look through here.

-Mm.

0:30:560:30:59

Pauline and Robin have made it clear they like large spaces,

0:30:590:31:02

and retracing our steps to the opposite end

0:31:020:31:05

of the ground floor, we find

0:31:050:31:07

the very generously proportioned living room.

0:31:070:31:09

Mm.

0:31:130:31:14

That really is something. A lovely size.

0:31:140:31:16

I told you roughly exactly what I wanted and you've found me roughly

0:31:160:31:19

exactly what I want.

0:31:190:31:20

It's just fantastic.

0:31:220:31:23

The fire, the way they use the stone, the wooden floors,

0:31:230:31:27

the subtle lighting.

0:31:270:31:28

I just can't stop thinking I'll have to play guess the price shortly.

0:31:280:31:31

-I know.

-You will.

-We don't want to know that bit.

0:31:310:31:34

You will, yeah. Let's go upstairs.

0:31:340:31:36

There are four bedrooms to explore,

0:31:360:31:39

which hopefully will please you as much as down here.

0:31:390:31:43

What a fantastic response to our Mystery House so far.

0:31:440:31:49

Stairs from the dining hall take us up to the sleeping quarters.

0:31:490:31:52

And here, there are three guest bedrooms, all doubles,

0:31:520:31:55

and each with an aspect to the front of the property.

0:31:550:31:58

And they're all served by a fully tiled bathroom featuring a separate

0:31:580:32:02

shower. Finally,

0:32:020:32:04

bedroom number four is a large double with a vaulted ceiling

0:32:040:32:07

that could be the one for Robin and Pauline.

0:32:070:32:10

So, this is the master.

0:32:110:32:14

-Ooh.

-Also, you have got a walk-in wardrobe.

0:32:140:32:17

-Oh, wow, lovely.

-Yes.

-Oh, I like that.

0:32:170:32:20

And through that door -

0:32:200:32:21

en-suite shower room, to the same spec as you've got down...

0:32:210:32:24

-Oh, lovely.

-Very nice.

0:32:240:32:26

-Lovely.

-It's really nice.

0:32:260:32:28

-Mm.

-Happy?

-Very.

0:32:280:32:30

-Really nice.

-OK.

0:32:300:32:32

Is it raining? Let's take our chances.

0:32:320:32:35

Come on, let's have a quick look outside.

0:32:350:32:38

So, lots to appeal to our couple on the inside,

0:32:390:32:42

and this impeccably finished barn conversion is situated

0:32:420:32:45

in almost three acres, where there's patio seating,

0:32:450:32:49

a double garage, and paddocks.

0:32:490:32:51

Look at the audience that have come to greet our final part of the tour.

0:32:530:32:58

Hello, boys and girls. So, now we're going to test you on its...

0:32:580:33:04

..its market value.

0:33:040:33:05

-Who's going to go first, then?

-Nitty-gritty time.

0:33:050:33:07

You're looking at me, so I better.

0:33:070:33:09

Yeah, go on, then, Robin, off you go.

0:33:090:33:11

OK. I am hoping... I think you've put me way over here.

0:33:110:33:13

-Yeah.

-But I say...

0:33:130:33:15

-..735.

-735, yeah.

-A hopeful 700.

0:33:170:33:21

A hopeful £700,000.

0:33:210:33:24

Well, your optimism, madam, has been rewarded

0:33:240:33:29

cos this is £700,000.

0:33:290:33:31

That's a good price for this specification, and here.

0:33:340:33:36

-Wow.

-With, let's face it, the best part of three acres.

0:33:360:33:39

To be fair, I think the alpacas are by separate negotiation.

0:33:390:33:42

-Mm-hm.

-But it's all doable.

0:33:420:33:44

-Whoa.

-We'll be talking a lot tonight, that's for sure.

0:33:440:33:46

-Yes.

-I'll bet you will.

0:33:460:33:48

Well, I suggest you start that conversation right now.

0:33:480:33:50

Off you go. Go and enjoy it.

0:33:500:33:51

-Yes, definitely.

-I will catch up with you...

0:33:510:33:53

-We'll go down there, I think.

-..a little bit later. Wherever you like.

0:33:530:33:56

Shall we have a look down there? Come on, let's go down.

0:33:560:33:58

-Thank you very much and well found.

-Thank you!

-That is our pleasure.

0:33:580:34:01

-Woo!

-Well, there we go.

0:34:010:34:03

You know that old thing about being in the right place

0:34:030:34:05

at the right time? This is one of those moments.

0:34:050:34:09

Hitting everything, including the budget,

0:34:090:34:12

our surprising Mystery House offers a large kitchen/diner and three

0:34:120:34:16

further reception rooms.

0:34:160:34:18

There are four bedrooms, including a master en suite.

0:34:180:34:21

Plus, it comes with almost three acres of land,

0:34:210:34:24

all in a stunning location within

0:34:240:34:26

the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

0:34:260:34:30

I'm really struck by this house.

0:34:300:34:32

I think it's a wonderful place.

0:34:320:34:34

I honestly think that this could be our homecoming,

0:34:340:34:39

cos we've found a house here that is really what we're after.

0:34:390:34:43

I feel very lucky.

0:34:430:34:44

I have to jump in a bit on this one.

0:34:450:34:47

-Yeah, I could see this being our new home.

-Mm.

0:34:470:34:51

-Hello, Pauline.

-Hello.

-How are we doing?

0:34:510:34:54

-Lovely. Very nice.

-You don't want to leave, do you, really?

0:34:540:34:56

-Not really, no.

-I don't blame you.

0:34:560:34:58

It's absolutely gorgeous.

0:34:580:34:59

And, look, a splash of sunshine to top it all off.

0:34:590:35:03

-Mm.

-Good signal.

-So,

0:35:030:35:05

we have bombarded you

0:35:050:35:06

with information and properties this week.

0:35:060:35:08

You now need to go and make some sort of sense of it.

0:35:080:35:12

Perhaps over a pint?

0:35:120:35:14

-Yes, please.

-Come on, then.

-I'll have a half.

-Oh, yeah.

0:35:140:35:16

Yorkshire has many attributes,

0:35:260:35:28

but a lesser-known one is its place in aviation history,

0:35:280:35:32

and here on the outskirts of York is the Yorkshire Air Museum.

0:35:320:35:36

I've come to meet museum director Ian Reed

0:35:360:35:39

to discover more about this fascinating homage to aviation.

0:35:390:35:42

Well, Ian, this is my idea of heaven,

0:35:420:35:45

getting to walk under the wings of a heavy bomber, and surrounded by this

0:35:450:35:49

fabulous collection of aircraft.

0:35:490:35:51

-What a place.

-Thank you.

-I mean, many people, I think,

0:35:510:35:54

have always assumed that aviation begins with the Wright brothers

0:35:540:35:58

at the start of the 20th century.

0:35:580:36:00

But Yorkshire has its own story to tell.

0:36:000:36:02

Well, yes, I mean, the Wright brothers were the first

0:36:020:36:04

powered flight, but they weren't the first aeroplane, by a long way.

0:36:040:36:08

50 years earlier, over there, is the Cayley glider.

0:36:100:36:13

Sir George Cayley, a very well-known Yorkshireman,

0:36:130:36:16

renowned throughout the world as being the inventor

0:36:160:36:20

of the modern-day aeroplane.

0:36:200:36:22

In 1853, Cayley's glider,

0:36:230:36:25

the world's first manned aircraft, dubbed the governable parachute,

0:36:250:36:29

took to the air. It's rather nice that you've got

0:36:290:36:33

Cayley's version over there

0:36:330:36:34

and you've acknowledged that transition through

0:36:340:36:37

to the Wright Flyer above us.

0:36:370:36:39

I mean, it is quite a contraption, isn't it?

0:36:390:36:41

Yeah. I mean, a lot of the things on the Wright Flyer actually came

0:36:410:36:44

directly from Cayley's notes.

0:36:440:36:47

And at Kill Devil, in 1903, when the Wright brothers first did

0:36:470:36:51

their first 120ft hop,

0:36:510:36:54

afterwards, when they met the press, they actually acknowledged that,

0:36:540:36:57

you know, the inspiration had come

0:36:570:36:59

from the work of Sir George Cayley,

0:36:590:37:02

-the Yorkshireman.

-What I've always been staggered by with the story of

0:37:020:37:05

aviation is the way that it evolved so much within just a century.

0:37:050:37:09

I mean, there's the Wright Flyer, what, 1903.

0:37:090:37:11

We've got Cayley over there, 1853,

0:37:110:37:13

and yet we're stood next to this beautiful Halifax bomber,

0:37:130:37:18

the only one of its kind in the world, I gather.

0:37:180:37:19

Yeah, it's the only bomber version, so it's a fantastic beast.

0:37:190:37:22

I mean, when you look at the Wright Flyer above it,

0:37:220:37:25

there's only 30-odd years between these two aircraft.

0:37:250:37:27

One did 120 feet.

0:37:270:37:29

This one flew all the way to Berlin and back at 280mph,

0:37:290:37:33

with eight tonnes of bombs and seven crew.

0:37:330:37:35

It took a world war to escalate the technological developments of these

0:37:380:37:42

fantastic flying machines,

0:37:420:37:43

and the advances are really quite remarkable.

0:37:430:37:47

Graham Sharp is an aircraft engineer,

0:37:470:37:49

and for six years, he's been working on

0:37:490:37:51

this SE5A, built around 1917.

0:37:510:37:56

Its restoration is almost complete.

0:37:560:37:58

To get my hands on a genuine SE5.

0:37:590:38:02

-How's that?

-That's fine, is that, yeah.

0:38:060:38:08

We can pop some chocks in now.

0:38:080:38:09

Yeah. I love that.

0:38:110:38:12

Look at that. The Lewis gun on the top.

0:38:120:38:14

Why do I know that?

0:38:140:38:15

I'm just an anorak, really, for aircraft, I suppose.

0:38:150:38:18

The SE5A is a single-seat biplane

0:38:190:38:22

and was one of the outstanding fighters

0:38:220:38:24

of the First World War.

0:38:240:38:26

It was also one of the fastest,

0:38:260:38:28

capable of racing through the sky at 138mph.

0:38:280:38:31

Can I have a quick peek in the cockpit?

0:38:310:38:34

-Help yourself. Have a look.

-Great.

0:38:340:38:37

So this is your world.

0:38:370:38:38

At how many feet do you normally fly?

0:38:380:38:41

Well, probably about 400 or 500 feet.

0:38:410:38:43

-Not very high these days.

-And the wicker seat, I love that.

0:38:430:38:46

-The wicker seat, yes.

-And the pedals. Very, very simple.

0:38:460:38:49

Yeah. No parachute.

0:38:490:38:51

I mean, it is on a wing and a prayer, it seems.

0:38:510:38:53

THEY LAUGH

0:38:530:38:55

I mean, when you're up there, flying around,

0:38:550:38:58

do you get a sense of what those young men,

0:38:580:39:00

those pioneers of military aviation, were going through?

0:39:000:39:04

You do get a sense of it, yes.

0:39:040:39:06

Open cockpit, wind in your face, you do.

0:39:060:39:08

Apart from being shot at. They were incredibly brave people to do it,

0:39:080:39:11

but they were young, that was the thing - no fear.

0:39:110:39:14

Graham's been lucky enough to work here with these beautiful aircraft

0:39:140:39:17

for ten years, but today he's going to let me sit in the cockpit.

0:39:170:39:21

Do you know, there's actually a little more room in here than I was

0:39:210:39:23

-expecting, Graham, to be honest.

-It's quite roomy.

0:39:230:39:26

Clear prop.

0:39:270:39:29

Prop clear.

0:39:290:39:30

Throttle up.

0:39:370:39:38

Wow.

0:39:410:39:42

That's fabulous. This certainly gives you a real sense

0:39:420:39:46

of what those early pilots were up against,

0:39:460:39:49

flying these very simple machines at great height,

0:39:490:39:54

and with great daring!

0:39:540:39:56

The sight, sound and smell of a centuries-old engine

0:39:560:40:00

firing into life.

0:40:000:40:02

This really is an absolute treat.

0:40:020:40:04

And to think, thanks to Cayley,

0:40:040:40:06

it all started here in Yorkshire.

0:40:060:40:09

And with another tick on my bucket list,

0:40:110:40:13

it's time to get back to our house-hunters.

0:40:130:40:15

Well, we've given Robin and Pauline some really good options this week,

0:40:170:40:20

and there are clearly two favourite contenders,

0:40:200:40:23

but which one might persuade them to give up the fun and sun of the

0:40:230:40:27

Mediterranean and move back to their beloved Yorkshire?

0:40:270:40:30

Well, let's go and ask them.

0:40:300:40:32

Well, guys, here we are.

0:40:380:40:39

It's our final conversation of the week, when we try and make sense of

0:40:390:40:43

everything that we have had a chance to show you.

0:40:430:40:46

But I think it's fair to say that there are two clear contenders.

0:40:460:40:50

Yeah, definitely two.

0:40:500:40:52

-Yeah.

-The courtyard house, I totally fell in love with.

0:40:520:40:56

But then, of course,

0:40:560:40:57

up your sleeve comes the Mystery,

0:40:570:41:00

and that threw a spanner in the works,

0:41:000:41:02

-didn't it?

-That blew my socks off.

0:41:020:41:04

-Yeah.

-Because that is quintessential, you know, Yorkshire,

0:41:040:41:08

out on the wilds there, on the tops,

0:41:080:41:11

just brilliant place, brilliant place.

0:41:110:41:12

It was a classic slice of Yorkshire Dales real estate.

0:41:120:41:17

And, you know, beautifully located but also beautifully renovated.

0:41:170:41:21

-Really.

-Yeah.

-It was second to none.

0:41:210:41:23

Yeah. The location, seeing the rambling hill,

0:41:230:41:27

the sheep, the llamas,

0:41:270:41:29

the lovely walls.

0:41:290:41:30

Even if it was raining, it seemed to win.

0:41:300:41:33

-It was...

-It was.

-..fantastic, that house, I must admit.

-Yeah.

0:41:330:41:36

So, the Mystery House is your favourite?

0:41:360:41:39

Yep. I would definitely say that.

0:41:390:41:41

-The Mystery House just tipped it.

-Yeah.

0:41:410:41:43

It was all of your budget at £700,000.

0:41:430:41:46

What happens next?

0:41:460:41:47

So think about maybe putting in an offer?

0:41:470:41:50

I could actually see it going this far.

0:41:500:41:52

-Interesting.

-I knew you'd get close,

0:41:520:41:53

but I didn't think you'd hit the nail on the head.

0:41:530:41:56

Well, you have got, you know, a lot to think about.

0:41:560:41:59

I wish you all the very best of luck with your deliberations.

0:41:590:42:02

Let's drink to those.

0:42:020:42:03

-Thank you very much.

-And let us know how you get on.

0:42:030:42:05

-Here's to our homecoming.

-There you go.

-Cheers.

-To a homecoming.

0:42:050:42:08

-Cheers, darling.

-Cheers.

-Cheers, Jules.

-Cheers, Robin.

0:42:080:42:11

Thanks.

0:42:110:42:12

You know, in my experience,

0:42:160:42:18

there are few counties that elicit the same

0:42:180:42:20

sense of pride and belonging as does Yorkshire amongst those who count

0:42:200:42:23

themselves lucky enough to have been born and bred here.

0:42:230:42:26

And that certainly has been obvious this week as we've helped Robin and

0:42:260:42:30

Pauline exchange their home away from home on the sun-kissed island

0:42:300:42:35

of Majorca for a home back home here, in Yorkshire.

0:42:350:42:39

Now, clearly they still have plenty of talking to do before that becomes

0:42:390:42:43

a reality, not least a discussion as to whether or not they really

0:42:430:42:46

want to share their new home with a herd of alpacas.

0:42:460:42:49

Well, there are worse things.

0:42:490:42:50

I'll see you next time.
