I think it's fair to say

0:00:020:00:03

the legend of Robin Hood is known the world over.

0:00:030:00:05

But how many of his Merry Men could you name?

0:00:050:00:08

The reason I ask is that apparently one of them is buried right here in

0:00:080:00:12

the grounds of this very church.

0:00:120:00:15

I will tell you who he was and where I am in just a moment.

0:00:150:00:19

Today, I'm with a couple who are dreaming of a new life together,

0:00:370:00:40

if they can get past the weather and a few character features.

0:00:400:00:45

What did we think as we first walked in?

0:00:450:00:47

I'm not very keen on dark beams.

0:00:470:00:50

But a few hidden gems might brighten the outlook.

0:00:500:00:54

Through here, in your dining room, you have a cupboard.

0:00:540:00:58

But it's not just any old cupboard.

0:00:580:01:00

Today, I'm in the Peak District at the church of

0:01:030:01:06

St Michael's And All Angels

0:01:060:01:07

in the village of Hathersage.

0:01:070:01:09

And this, according to the headstone,

0:01:090:01:12

is the grave of Little John.

0:01:120:01:14

Who, it seems, wasn't quite so little after all.

0:01:140:01:18

Now, the story goes that the grave was opened in 1780

0:01:180:01:21

and the thigh bone found

0:01:210:01:23

inside measured 30 inches long -

0:01:230:01:26

which made the person to whom it belonged to over seven feet tall.

0:01:260:01:31

Whether it was Little John or not, from way up here,

0:01:310:01:35

whoever it was would have had the most terrific views

0:01:350:01:38

of what was later to become Britain's very first National Park.

0:01:380:01:44

The Peak District National Park sits in the centre of England,

0:01:440:01:48

mostly falling within four counties,

0:01:480:01:51

with the majority lying in Derbyshire.

0:01:510:01:54

It was the very first area

0:01:540:01:56

to be designated as a National Park in 1951,

0:01:560:01:59

and every year millions of people escape here to enjoy its spectacular

0:01:590:02:04

panoramas, challenging hikes

0:02:040:02:06

which stretch across 1,800 miles of footpaths,

0:02:060:02:09

and timeless stone villages.

0:02:090:02:12

Bakewell is often called the heart of the Peak District.

0:02:120:02:15

A prosperous country town, it's the biggest settlement in the park.

0:02:150:02:20

Visitors are drawn by elegant stone architecture,

0:02:200:02:22

specialist markets and the town's signature dish,

0:02:220:02:26

the Bakewell pudding, created here in 1820.

0:02:260:02:30

With sun-dappled vistas and unrivalled outdoor activities,

0:02:300:02:34

the Peak District is a place that boasts magnificent natural beauty

0:02:340:02:38

that can be appreciated year-round in all its glory.

0:02:380:02:42

It may not surprise you to learn

0:02:440:02:47

that houses in National Parks come at a premium.

0:02:470:02:50

And the Peak District is no exception.

0:02:500:02:53

A detached property here will set you back around £365,000.

0:02:530:02:59

Now, that's about £32,000 above the national figure,

0:02:590:03:03

and over £100,000 more than a similar Derbyshire property outside

0:03:030:03:09

of the park boundaries.

0:03:090:03:10

What's more, in a bid to protect local communities,

0:03:100:03:14

some Peak properties have occupancy restrictions and can only be bought

0:03:140:03:18

by those that have lived or worked

0:03:180:03:21

in the Park for more than three years.

0:03:210:03:24

But there are still plenty of terrific properties to be had,

0:03:240:03:28

so let's meet today's couple who are hoping to buy one.

0:03:280:03:32

Builder Trevor and supply teacher Eunice

0:03:320:03:35

began their romance six years ago,

0:03:350:03:37

when he was living in Coventry

0:03:370:03:39

and she was just north of Stoke-on-Trent.

0:03:390:03:42

I met Trevor on the internet, and we were e-mailing,

0:03:420:03:45

and then we decided to meet in a pub.

0:03:450:03:47

We didn't think there would be anything come of it because

0:03:470:03:50

of the distance between us and,

0:03:500:03:52

hey, six years later, we have moved in together.

0:03:520:03:55

We have both been sort of single for quite a while.

0:03:550:03:57

Eunice just clicked. And we've got a little bit of chemistry, haven't we?

0:03:570:04:02

After years of juggling a long-distance relationship,

0:04:020:04:04

Trevor moved in with Eunice two months ago,

0:04:040:04:07

but now they both feel they want to build a home together.

0:04:070:04:11

This is Eunice's house, my house was mine,

0:04:110:04:14

it's never quite the same, so...

0:04:140:04:16

We're both at a different stage in our life, aren't we?

0:04:170:04:20

It's the next phase.

0:04:200:04:21

I've lived in this house for well over 30 years,

0:04:210:04:25

and it's time now to start

0:04:250:04:27

a new life, exciting life,

0:04:270:04:30

exciting to move to a new area and a new house.

0:04:300:04:34

While Trevor will be semi-retired,

0:04:340:04:36

Eunice plans to continue working part-time.

0:04:360:04:39

When we move, I would like to carry on supply teaching,

0:04:390:04:43

perhaps one day, two days a week.

0:04:430:04:45

I will probably want to still do a little bit of,

0:04:450:04:47

perhaps, property development,

0:04:470:04:49

just to keep something on the go,

0:04:490:04:50

because I don't want to sit around and do nothing.

0:04:500:04:54

When it comes to finding their home,

0:04:540:04:56

they've decided to search in the Peak District.

0:04:560:04:59

Probably because I met Eunice, I have discovered this area.

0:04:590:05:02

I have been to the Peak District before.

0:05:020:05:04

I just love the area.

0:05:040:05:06

I love the scenery and the hills,

0:05:060:05:08

which you don't get in the sort of flat Midlands.

0:05:080:05:11

Space to develop their hobbies

0:05:110:05:13

is another reason for the move to the Peaks.

0:05:130:05:16

I've got a little old classic car which I like to play around with

0:05:160:05:19

and take to pieces,

0:05:190:05:21

and I'm looking forward to going up in the Peak District and using it a

0:05:210:05:24

bit more around here.

0:05:240:05:26

Above all, Trevor and Eunice are looking forward to building a life

0:05:260:05:30

together in their new property.

0:05:300:05:31

And also buying a place, we'll put our own stamp on it,

0:05:330:05:37

and then sharing our hobbies together and entertaining,

0:05:370:05:40

once we've got it right.

0:05:400:05:42

So really, that's...it's quite an exciting time for us, isn't it?

0:05:420:05:46

Yeah, yeah.

0:05:460:05:48

Trevor's Warwickshire house sale is funding their move,

0:05:510:05:54

but Eunice is considering renting out her Staffordshire home,

0:05:540:05:57

so ideally they are looking to buy

0:05:570:05:59

in the southwest portion of the Peak District.

0:05:590:06:01

I am meeting them to discover more about their requirements.

0:06:010:06:06

Well, Trevor and Eunice, welcome to the Peak District...

0:06:060:06:08

-Thank you.

-..and this exciting new move for the two of you.

0:06:080:06:12

So, why have you decided,

0:06:120:06:13

this first home together,

0:06:130:06:15

you are going to settle in this part of the country?

0:06:150:06:18

Well, from my point of view, I absolutely love walking.

0:06:180:06:21

So the Peak District with its hills and valleys and countryside,

0:06:210:06:25

the stone walls, the sheep really appeals to me.

0:06:250:06:27

So, it would be my big hobby on my doorstep.

0:06:270:06:30

And Trevor, you're happy to move this way, are you?

0:06:300:06:33

-Yes.

-Because you're a Coventry lad.

0:06:330:06:34

-Yes.

-How many years in Coventry?

0:06:340:06:36

Whole life. Born and bred in Coventry.

0:06:360:06:38

It's a big move, isn't it? Will you miss it, do you think?

0:06:380:06:41

Certain parts of it, yes.

0:06:410:06:42

And I've got family down there, of course, so...

0:06:420:06:44

Well, you've sold your house, so there's no going back!

0:06:440:06:47

-That's right.

-But you do have family down there,

0:06:470:06:49

because between you, you have got quite a lot of family, haven't you?

0:06:490:06:51

How many children in total, grown-up children?

0:06:510:06:53

We have five children between us.

0:06:530:06:55

Any grandchildren?

0:06:550:06:56

-Two. I've got two.

-You've got two.

-Have you?

-I haven't got any.

0:06:560:06:59

So ideally, then,

0:06:590:07:00

how many bedrooms are you looking for with your next home together?

0:07:000:07:04

-A three-bedroom house, maybe four.

-Maybe four.

-Yes.

0:07:040:07:07

There's going to be lots of sofa beds everywhere.

0:07:070:07:09

What style are you after with this next home?

0:07:090:07:13

One with character.

0:07:130:07:14

But I would like it light and airy.

0:07:160:07:18

Probably semi-rural with the community quite close too.

0:07:180:07:22

So you don't want to be too out in the sticks?

0:07:220:07:24

We don't want to be too isolated.

0:07:240:07:26

-Preferably not, no.

-Now, this is an interesting one,

0:07:260:07:28

first time you've bought a home together, who is going to make,

0:07:280:07:31

do you think, the final decision?

0:07:310:07:33

Or will it be a 50-50 split?

0:07:330:07:35

I think it's 50-50.

0:07:350:07:36

-I'm going to lead.

-Well, there you are.

0:07:360:07:40

I'm liking the honesty at the start of this house-hunt.

0:07:400:07:43

Definitely.

0:07:430:07:45

Let's remind ourselves how much we've got to spend with this move.

0:07:450:07:49

We are looking up to 500,000,

0:07:490:07:52

possibly a little more if it's something really...

0:07:520:07:55

-Special.

-..on the dime.

0:07:550:07:57

Yeah. Well, let's get cracking.

0:07:570:07:59

It isn't the best of days, sadly,

0:07:590:08:00

but it's not going to put us off, is it?

0:08:000:08:02

-No.

-No.

-Let's go. Right, OK.

0:08:020:08:04

With a maximum budget of £500,000,

0:08:060:08:08

Eunice and Trevor would like...

0:08:080:08:12

We've got a wide range of beautiful houses to show Trevor and Eunice,

0:08:230:08:27

and I will be asking them to guess

0:08:270:08:29

the price of each property before I reveal it.

0:08:290:08:32

When it comes to our Mystery House,

0:08:320:08:34

it has much more than meets the eye.

0:08:340:08:37

Now, Trevor, I want to talk about walking.

0:08:420:08:46

Before you met Eunice, what would an average walk be for you?

0:08:460:08:50

Probably an average walk, I don't know, five or six miles?

0:08:500:08:53

-Oh, good. That's a long way.

-Some decent walks.

0:08:530:08:55

That's not a Eunice walk, is it?

0:08:550:08:56

-That's not a Eunice walk, no.

-Come on, Eunice, tell me,

0:08:560:08:58

how many miles can you easily walk every day?

0:08:580:09:01

Me and Trevor at the weekend,

0:09:010:09:03

in the Peak District, could do up to ten,

0:09:030:09:06

but the usual is seven or eight,

0:09:060:09:09

because he starts moaning after that.

0:09:090:09:12

You're both really fit, aren't you?

0:09:120:09:14

Yes, yes, I suppose we are, really, yes.

0:09:140:09:16

And in a way, that's helped focus

0:09:160:09:18

the mind as to where you want to move to?

0:09:180:09:20

Yes, definitely. Definitely.

0:09:200:09:22

Yes.

0:09:220:09:23

Our first property is in the Staffordshire village of Warslow.

0:09:260:09:29

Surrounded by superb walking terrain,

0:09:310:09:33

Warslow is filled with traditional stone homes.

0:09:330:09:36

The 19th-century church of Saint Lawrence

0:09:360:09:39

features stained glass windows

0:09:390:09:40

by the distinguished designer William Morris.

0:09:400:09:43

There is one pub in the village,

0:09:430:09:45

which is within walking distance of our first house.

0:09:450:09:48

It is pouring with rain,

0:09:500:09:51

but hopefully our first property

0:09:510:09:53

is going to be our shining light.

0:09:530:09:56

-Right.

-Oh, that's lovely.

-Yeah, it is.

0:09:560:09:58

-It's nice.

-It's got character.

0:09:580:09:59

It is an unusual property because, in a way, it's two in one.

0:09:590:10:03

-Right.

-Oh, right.

-Let's step inside and I'll show you some more.

0:10:030:10:06

That's a good idea.

0:10:060:10:08

-Yes, it's different.

-I'm encouraged by their favourable reactions.

0:10:080:10:13

Originally built in 1800s,

0:10:130:10:15

this house has previously been used as a post office and a blacksmiths.

0:10:150:10:20

The home has been recently converted and modernised and is currently

0:10:200:10:23

unfurnished, but definitely full of character.

0:10:230:10:27

The good news is it's warm and it's dry.

0:10:280:10:32

So let's start the tour. Welcome to your home.

0:10:320:10:38

Lovely. First impression is great.

0:10:380:10:40

So, apart from the size and the spaciousness of it,

0:10:400:10:43

what first hits you when you walk into this room?

0:10:430:10:46

The open-plan, which I quite like, actually.

0:10:460:10:49

It's a very small cottage from outside, but when you come in,

0:10:490:10:51

it's nice and open and light. Definitely.

0:10:510:10:54

This is the sort of kitchen and eating area that we are looking for.

0:10:540:10:57

It's quite a nice entertaining room, isn't it?

0:10:570:10:59

-Yeah, it's nice.

-Yeah.

-So you have your wood burner here.

0:10:590:11:02

-Yes, nice little wood burner as well.

-Always very important.

0:11:020:11:04

Oh, definitely.

0:11:040:11:06

You've got your patio doors out onto your garden as you can see from

0:11:060:11:09

here. It also has a utility room, Eunice.

0:11:090:11:12

-Oh, lovely.

-With access outside.

0:11:120:11:15

-To put my boots in there. Dirty boots.

-Absolutely.

0:11:150:11:18

Very important to Eunice, that one.

0:11:180:11:20

A positive start.

0:11:200:11:21

-Yes.

-Let me lead you through and show you the sitting room.

0:11:210:11:24

Featuring all the mod cons including underfloor heating,

0:11:240:11:29

the ground floor also has a guest WC and a small study.

0:11:290:11:33

So... I can imagine you two would spend a lot of time

0:11:350:11:38

in that wonderful kitchen,

0:11:380:11:40

but it's important to have a sitting room you're happy with as well.

0:11:400:11:43

What do we think of this one?

0:11:430:11:45

First impressions, a little bit tiny.

0:11:450:11:47

It's hard to see it when you don't have any furniture as well.

0:11:470:11:50

-It is.

-You've got to get that imagination going.

0:11:500:11:52

-Yes.

-And the whole of the house is like this.

0:11:520:11:55

But I am going to say, blank canvas, you can put your own mark on it.

0:11:550:11:58

Yes. It is.

0:11:580:11:59

Right, we will head upstairs and see what you make of that.

0:11:590:12:02

OK.

0:12:020:12:03

Moving onwards,

0:12:050:12:07

off the first-storey landing are two oak floor bedrooms and a bathroom

0:12:070:12:11

with walk-in shower and freestanding bath.

0:12:110:12:14

And then we come to the master bedroom.

0:12:140:12:17

This is a fair size, isn't it?

0:12:170:12:19

-Big enough?

-Yes, it looks the right size.

0:12:190:12:21

Just deciding where the bed is going to go.

0:12:210:12:24

And then next door, a really good size en-suite.

0:12:250:12:28

-Right, that's good.

-So, what is your first feeling?

0:12:280:12:31

You don't have to be polite, your first feeling,

0:12:310:12:33

it's the first house we've seen together.

0:12:330:12:36

It's got character, which is what I want it to.

0:12:360:12:39

Space wise, I mean there's only two of us at the moment, but of course

0:12:390:12:42

when we have visitors to stay, that's important,

0:12:420:12:45

the size of the bedrooms.

0:12:450:12:47

But so far, so good, I think.

0:12:470:12:49

-Yeah.

-There is the important part about the garage to look at,

0:12:490:12:52

so let's head back downstairs,

0:12:520:12:54

Trevor, I am going to get you to lead the way.

0:12:540:12:56

We are going to brave the elements and also talk money.

0:12:560:12:58

-OK.

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:12:580:13:00

Thank you.

0:13:000:13:02

Though the bedrooms give Trevor and Eunice the space they need,

0:13:020:13:05

I'm sensing that initial enthusiasm for this conversion may have waned.

0:13:050:13:10

Outside, the landscaped gardens are low-maintenance,

0:13:100:13:13

and although there is off-road parking,

0:13:130:13:16

there is presently no purpose-built garage.

0:13:160:13:19

So here is our garden.

0:13:190:13:21

Is this going to be enough for you, do you think?

0:13:210:13:23

-I think it would be, wouldn't it?

-I think so, yeah.

0:13:230:13:25

-I think so.

-So, let's talk money, shall we?

0:13:250:13:29

How much do we think our first cottage is on the market for?

0:13:290:13:33

I would say...

0:13:340:13:36

..£455,000.

0:13:360:13:39

-OK.

-I will say a little bit more, £465,000.

0:13:390:13:43

Well, you are close, both of you, aren't you?

0:13:430:13:46

-Well, yes.

-The actual asking price is offers

0:13:460:13:49

between £450,000 and £485,000.

0:13:490:13:54

How do you feel about that sort of price?

0:13:540:13:56

I think the price is good.

0:13:560:13:58

My only issue is the lack of outside space for cars and garages,

0:13:580:14:03

that is a little bit of a problem for me.

0:14:030:14:05

-We like the house.

-Yes, the house is very nice.

-I like the location.

0:14:050:14:08

You feel part of the village, you're not isolated.

0:14:080:14:10

But it's that little issue for you, isn't it?

0:14:100:14:13

I totally understand about the garage,

0:14:130:14:15

that's something for you to weigh up.

0:14:150:14:17

So why don't you go back into the house,

0:14:170:14:19

just the two of you this time,

0:14:190:14:20

have another look at it,

0:14:200:14:22

imagine what it could look like with your own furniture,

0:14:220:14:24

your own print on it, and I will come and find you when you're ready?

0:14:240:14:27

-OK. Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:14:270:14:29

I think this cottage is a brilliant start.

0:14:300:14:33

And although it's only three bedrooms, it is very spacious,

0:14:330:14:36

it is in the Park, beautiful setting.

0:14:360:14:39

When it comes to the garage and parking,

0:14:390:14:42

that is a slight problem, but we are well under budget,

0:14:420:14:46

so it's something we've got to think about.

0:14:460:14:47

Is it worth the compromise?

0:14:470:14:50

We'll just have to wait and see.

0:14:500:14:52

Comfortably under budget,

0:14:520:14:54

this 19th-century conversion

0:14:540:14:56

offers a large and contemporary kitchen-diner

0:14:560:14:59

as well as a living room and the three bedrooms

0:14:590:15:01

that Trevor and Eunice were hoping for.

0:15:010:15:03

There is an easy to maintain garden,

0:15:030:15:05

and the Peaks are right on their doorstep.

0:15:050:15:08

I could see ourselves living here.

0:15:090:15:11

It's right in the village community.

0:15:110:15:14

I could go walking every day.

0:15:140:15:16

I only have to open the door and I'd be up on the hills.

0:15:160:15:19

I wouldn't have to use a car.

0:15:190:15:21

So it's a definite plus for me, yes.

0:15:210:15:23

I think this fits the bill exactly.

0:15:230:15:25

It's got the character. It's got the style.

0:15:250:15:28

It has been very nicely modernised, so there's very little to do on it.

0:15:280:15:32

So, yeah, ticks all those boxes.

0:15:320:15:34

The biggest problem I've got is wanting somewhere with a garage,

0:15:340:15:38

or a space to build a garage.

0:15:380:15:41

Right, that's it, I think we are going to need these, aren't we?

0:15:450:15:48

-Yeah.

-Ready to go?

-Yeah. OK.

0:15:480:15:51

Classic car enthusiast Trevor and his co-driver Eunice have chosen

0:16:000:16:04

one of Britain's most idyllic regions

0:16:040:16:06

to explore a winning move.

0:16:060:16:08

But it was once rail, not road,

0:16:080:16:12

that drove the economy of the Peak District.

0:16:120:16:14

And in Staveley, near Chesterfield, that heritage is commemorated at the

0:16:140:16:19

Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

0:16:190:16:21

Keen to find out more about the region's transport history,

0:16:210:16:24

Trevor and Eunice are meeting general manager Mervyn Allcock.

0:16:240:16:28

So how important was the railway to this area?

0:16:280:16:32

Well, originally there were a huge number of collieries around here,

0:16:320:16:35

and obviously the coal needed carrying all over the country

0:16:350:16:38

to power the country, to power the machines,

0:16:380:16:39

because the railway network was virtually non-existent,

0:16:390:16:42

certainly not as developed as it is now.

0:16:420:16:43

And the trains in this depot itself took the coal around the country on

0:16:430:16:47

wagons and took it into places where cars and trucks couldn't get to

0:16:470:16:50

and fed the country the coal it needed.

0:16:500:16:53

The Roundhouse opened in 1870 as part of the now defunct

0:16:530:16:56

North Midland Railway from Derby to Leeds

0:16:560:16:59

and was used to house and maintain engines.

0:16:590:17:02

It is now home to Britain's second largest collection of locomotives as

0:17:020:17:06

well as other equipment and memorabilia

0:17:060:17:08

from the heyday of British Railways.

0:17:080:17:10

You've got a vast collection of trains here, Mervyn,

0:17:100:17:12

how did it get to this sort of size?

0:17:120:17:15

I read an article in '89 which said they were going to flatten the last

0:17:150:17:17

operational Roundhouse,

0:17:170:17:19

so I started a campaign to save it

0:17:190:17:20

and we managed to get a preservation order placed on it in 1991.

0:17:200:17:24

Then, in '97, we started rebuilding,

0:17:240:17:26

it took us a year to put the building back together

0:17:260:17:28

after the dereliction of the roof, etc, and then we invited people

0:17:280:17:31

to bring their locomotives here.

0:17:310:17:32

And the collections have grown and grown and grown over the years.

0:17:320:17:35

Why is it important to you to have this collection here?

0:17:350:17:38

Well, as a young boy, I was a railway enthusiast.

0:17:380:17:40

I'm very passionate about railways, passionate about locomotives.

0:17:400:17:43

Particularly passionate about the Roundhouse.

0:17:430:17:46

I feel that we need to keep these vehicles alive,

0:17:460:17:48

we need to keep this building alive, for future generations.

0:17:480:17:51

It's very important to me.

0:17:510:17:53

The centrepiece of the Roundhouse was its turntable,

0:17:530:17:56

which allowed locomotives to be efficiently stored

0:17:560:17:59

and more easily accessed.

0:17:590:18:00

So how did they used to store trains

0:18:000:18:02

before the advent of these roundhouses?

0:18:020:18:04

One of the ways was long buildings with lots of trains with

0:18:040:18:06

the locomotive in the middle. So, if you had them in long rows,

0:18:060:18:09

you would have to move the outer locomotives

0:18:090:18:11

to collect the inner one.

0:18:110:18:12

With this, if you look from above, it's like a clock face.

0:18:120:18:15

So if you needed to fetch a locomotive from three o'clock,

0:18:150:18:17

you just turn the turntable,

0:18:170:18:19

pick it up, and of course also

0:18:190:18:21

in steam locomotive days they had a cab at one end,

0:18:210:18:23

so you brought the locomotive on,

0:18:230:18:25

turned it and then it was able to go in a different direction.

0:18:250:18:28

So the big question, Mervyn, is, can we see it in action?

0:18:280:18:31

Absolutely. This is the last

0:18:310:18:32

operational railway Roundhouse in Great Britain.

0:18:320:18:34

There is a locomotive coming in at the moment.

0:18:340:18:36

However, you guys thought you were here for a gentle tour, you're not.

0:18:360:18:39

-I need a hand with this.

-Oh, right, OK.

0:18:390:18:43

OK, guys, follow me around here.

0:18:490:18:51

Go on, then. Give it a pull.

0:18:510:18:52

OK, guys, I'm only kidding,

0:18:570:18:59

that's how they used to do it in the old days.

0:18:590:19:02

-Push of a button nowadays.

-Thank goodness for that.

0:19:020:19:04

Oh, yeah, that's better.

0:19:070:19:09

OK, guys, we'll now go into the cab.

0:19:160:19:18

We've still got more houses to show Trevor and Eunice,

0:19:200:19:23

so all aboard for the rest of our Peak District tour.

0:19:230:19:27

Our second house is also in Staffordshire,

0:19:310:19:33

in the moorland village of Butterton.

0:19:330:19:36

Overlooking the beautiful Manifold Valley,

0:19:360:19:38

Butterton is at the centre of an extensive network of footpaths.

0:19:380:19:42

Facilities here include a 19th-century church, pub

0:19:430:19:48

and a post office.

0:19:480:19:49

The centre of this village provides

0:19:490:19:51

a curious sight as the Hoo Brook briefly

0:19:510:19:54

shares it path with the street.

0:19:540:19:56

The house we've come to look at was built in the 18th century.

0:19:580:20:02

It is a semidetached farm cottage that also features

0:20:020:20:05

original agricultural buildings as outhouses.

0:20:050:20:08

So, there is plenty for our couple to consider.

0:20:080:20:11

-Right.

-Oh, wow.

-Quite substantial.

0:20:110:20:14

It's totally different to the first house we looked at, isn't it?

0:20:140:20:17

The actual house looks quite small.

0:20:170:20:20

But it's got a lovely cottagey feel from the front.

0:20:200:20:23

-Excellent, excellent.

-Well, let's see what you make of the inside.

0:20:230:20:26

-OK.

-Yeah, let's go.

0:20:260:20:28

Despite a somewhat mixed initial response to this property,

0:20:280:20:32

I am optimistic that Eunice might be won over by the rustic interior.

0:20:320:20:36

The living room is just to the right of the entrance hall.

0:20:360:20:40

So let's start off, I think this time with the sitting-room.

0:20:400:20:43

Dominated by a large fireplace there.

0:20:450:20:47

It's probably a very cosy room.

0:20:470:20:49

I'm not quite sure it's to my taste.

0:20:490:20:53

It's a bit overpowering with the ceiling being a little bit low.

0:20:530:20:58

And probably dark windows.

0:20:580:21:00

Unfortunately, I'm not very keen on dark beams.

0:21:000:21:03

-Yeah.

-If I painted these beams white and I gave the walls a very light

0:21:030:21:09

colour, I wonder if you might slightly change your mind?

0:21:090:21:13

-That would help.

-Yeah. OK.

0:21:130:21:14

Right. You can tell I'm not giving up on this one, can't you?

0:21:140:21:17

No, I can.

0:21:170:21:19

Let's see how we fare with our country kitchen.

0:21:220:21:26

There's enough room to eat and cook

0:21:260:21:28

and it's quite a sizeable area, isn't it?

0:21:280:21:30

But, to me, it's not light enough.

0:21:300:21:33

-That where you're struggling?

-For a kitchen. It's not light enough.

0:21:330:21:36

You might be able to get larger windows allowed at the back,

0:21:360:21:38

I'm not quite sure whether you will at the front.

0:21:380:21:41

With your knowledge and experience over the years working in

0:21:410:21:44

the building trade, you will have

0:21:440:21:46

-an eye as to what is achievable.

-What you can do.

0:21:460:21:49

And hopefully see the potential in my second property.

0:21:490:21:51

-Yeah. Well.

-I'm hoping. I'm hoping, Trevor.

0:21:510:21:53

-Nothing is impossible.

-Right, I'm going to squeeze past

0:21:530:21:55

-and we're going to go upstairs.

-OK.

0:21:550:21:57

Adjacent to the kitchen, an old piggery has been converted

0:21:570:22:01

and divided up to provide a utility room and snug,

0:22:010:22:04

which could be utilised as an additional bedroom.

0:22:040:22:08

On the first floor, a landing offers access to a family bathroom.

0:22:080:22:13

Bedroom with magnificent views over the nearby valley

0:22:130:22:16

and the master bedroom.

0:22:160:22:18

Now I can't offer you an en-suite.

0:22:180:22:21

But I can offer you a nice master bedroom.

0:22:210:22:24

Good size, I think.

0:22:240:22:25

It is. It is a good size.

0:22:250:22:26

Eunice, talk to me about the windows,

0:22:260:22:28

how are we faring on this one?

0:22:280:22:30

Well, to me it's still a little bit dark.

0:22:300:22:33

To be honest, it's not really ticking the boxes for me.

0:22:330:22:36

Is it not? I feel I've slightly lost you in the house.

0:22:360:22:39

I'm wondering whether I can claw your attention back

0:22:390:22:43

with the outside,

0:22:430:22:44

because there are quite a few possibilities.

0:22:440:22:47

Happy to venture back out into the rain?

0:22:470:22:49

-Absolutely. Yeah. Sounds interesting.

-Thank you.

0:22:490:22:51

Unlike our first property,

0:22:520:22:54

this one boasts a wealth of outbuildings including a large barn

0:22:540:22:58

and a double stable block,

0:22:580:22:59

both providing room for more than

0:22:590:23:01

one classic car if Trevor should choose to expand his collection.

0:23:010:23:05

As well as a large lawned private garden with vegetable plot,

0:23:060:23:10

there is also a manege for horses and two paddocks

0:23:100:23:13

which offer the opportunity for

0:23:130:23:15

Eunice and Trevor to develop equestrian interests,

0:23:150:23:19

or lease the space out.

0:23:190:23:21

Potential, that's the word I'm going to use.

0:23:210:23:24

And I would agree with you, there's plenty of potential here.

0:23:240:23:28

Well, I'm thinking this property, with the outbuildings and the land,

0:23:280:23:33

is going to be quite difficult to price.

0:23:330:23:35

Who wants to guess the price first?

0:23:350:23:37

I think it's my turn, this one.

0:23:370:23:39

I'm guessing it's at the lower end of ours, £450,000.

0:23:390:23:43

OK.

0:23:430:23:44

I would go more than that,

0:23:440:23:46

because of the potential that it's actually got here,

0:23:460:23:51

and I would go for £480,000.

0:23:510:23:53

Interesting. Well, Eunice, you are the closest

0:23:530:23:56

because the asking price is £475,000.

0:23:560:24:01

-Oh.

-Oh, right.

-I was really close, then.

-Well, why don't you go

0:24:010:24:04

and have another look around and have a nose around the barns,

0:24:040:24:06

and I'll see you in a little while?

0:24:060:24:08

-Thank you.

-All right.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:24:080:24:11

It does have so much potential, as Eunice so rightly said.

0:24:120:24:16

However, from the minute they saw this property, they had their

0:24:160:24:21

reservations, and I can't put my finger on it.

0:24:210:24:23

I don't know what it is because the location is first-class,

0:24:230:24:26

the house is beautiful.

0:24:260:24:28

But you never know, another look around, it might change things.

0:24:280:24:31

£25,000 under budget, this characterful

0:24:350:24:38

farm property has...

0:24:380:24:40

The second property, I got lots of potential.

0:24:510:24:55

Lots of character.

0:24:550:24:56

Loads of outdoor space.

0:24:560:24:58

This one is so different to the first property we looked at.

0:24:580:25:02

It's in the right location.

0:25:020:25:04

It's got a lot going for it in terms of potential.

0:25:040:25:07

It would actually need a lot of work converting buildings

0:25:070:25:11

and our stage of life, me and Trev,

0:25:110:25:13

I think probably that would be too much for us.

0:25:130:25:16

Yeah, there's definitely some potential here.

0:25:160:25:18

We could convert the barns further down.

0:25:180:25:20

Into living accommodation?

0:25:200:25:22

Yeah, into living accommodation. Or even as holiday lets.

0:25:220:25:24

Holiday let, yeah. It has got potential, yes.

0:25:240:25:27

-Yeah. I can see that.

-I'm liking the sound of this.

0:25:270:25:29

-Whirring.

-Possible plans.

-Yeah.

0:25:290:25:32

-Possible.

-Yeah.

-I wonder if it's changed your minds?

0:25:320:25:36

I don't know, but things do tend to tick round in my mind a lot so...

0:25:370:25:41

-It will grow.

-Let you sleep on it, because that's it for today.

0:25:410:25:44

Then, obviously, I've got one more to show you tomorrow.

0:25:440:25:47

-OK.

-OK.

-Shall we hit the road?

-Yeah.

0:25:470:25:49

-Yes.

-Ready to see the rain again?

0:25:490:25:51

-Yes.

-Come on.

-All right.

0:25:510:25:52

We are house-hunting in the Peak District

0:26:060:26:08

with Trevor and Eunice,

0:26:080:26:09

who have a budget of £500,000 to buy their first property together.

0:26:090:26:14

So far, I've presented them with two homes.

0:26:140:26:17

And coming up, we have an enchanting revelation at the Mystery House.

0:26:170:26:22

This isn't the only little magic door that this property has.

0:26:220:26:26

-Oh, right.

-Any idea why?

0:26:260:26:28

-I don't know.

-None at all.

-I don't know. No.

-Silence.

0:26:280:26:32

And I act as midwife alongside some passionate farmers of the future.

0:26:320:26:36

Take her to Mum.

0:26:360:26:38

Here you go, Mum. There we are.

0:26:380:26:40

How incredible was that?

0:26:420:26:44

We had a tremendous start yesterday

0:26:470:26:50

with our first property, with Trevor and Eunice,

0:26:500:26:53

and if we could have conjured up a garage, I think we could have

0:26:530:26:58

cracked it. However, today is all about the Mystery House, of course.

0:26:580:27:04

Now, it dawned on me that between them they have five children,

0:27:040:27:07

plus grandchildren.

0:27:070:27:09

So where are they all going to stay?

0:27:090:27:11

Well, this is where the Mystery House

0:27:110:27:13

comes into its own,

0:27:130:27:14

with a bonus on top.

0:27:140:27:17

Our Mystery House is in the Staffordshire Peak District

0:27:230:27:26

village of Wetton.

0:27:260:27:27

Consisting mainly of stone built houses,

0:27:270:27:30

the local pub for Wetton residents opened around 1760

0:27:300:27:34

and retains much of its period character.

0:27:340:27:37

The church of St Margaret was built in the 14th century.

0:27:370:27:40

Only the tower survived a fire in 1820,

0:27:400:27:43

but the rest of the building was quickly rebuilt.

0:27:430:27:47

Our mystery property lies right in the centre of the village.

0:27:470:27:51

So, our final house in the Peak District

0:27:510:27:53

I want to show you is this one right in front of us.

0:27:530:27:56

-Oh, wow.

-Oh, a little cottage.

0:27:560:27:58

It is the Mystery House, any idea why?

0:27:580:28:01

I think it's quite deceptive,

0:28:010:28:03

because it's small at the front and you're going to surprise us when we

0:28:030:28:06

-walk round the back.

-Interesting, interesting.

0:28:060:28:09

Well, shall we start?

0:28:090:28:10

-Yes.

-OK.

-Let's see how we get on.

0:28:100:28:12

OK.

0:28:120:28:13

Trevor and Eunice seem curious, which is usually a very good sign.

0:28:130:28:18

There are two entrances to the Mystery House,

0:28:180:28:21

and one of them takes us directly

0:28:210:28:23

into a tastefully renovated and bright kitchen-diner.

0:28:230:28:27

Right. Let's start off with our kitchen.

0:28:270:28:30

-Very nice.

-It's a little bit small.

0:28:300:28:32

Yeah, it is a little bit small.

0:28:320:28:34

I think a little bit small is the mantra, isn't it,

0:28:340:28:36

for this Peak District tour?

0:28:360:28:37

We've managed to have it in every house,

0:28:370:28:39

but we have a really large utility room next door.

0:28:390:28:44

So that might help you a little bit.

0:28:440:28:46

Is this functional, does this work for you?

0:28:460:28:49

-Yes.

-I think so.

-I think so,

0:28:490:28:51

because it's all around three sides, isn't it?

0:28:510:28:53

Are you happy with the beams?

0:28:530:28:55

Yes. Yes, well, there's always a coat of white paint!

0:28:550:28:58

Yes.

0:28:580:29:00

Not a bad start.

0:29:000:29:01

Well, I'm excited to show you this house because it has

0:29:010:29:04

fantastic potential.

0:29:040:29:06

Great. OK.

0:29:060:29:07

Here is our sitting room.

0:29:090:29:12

Dominated by this enormous stone fireplace,

0:29:120:29:16

with wood burner.

0:29:160:29:17

-Yes. Yes.

-That's nice.

-Yes, it is.

-That's very nice.

-Isn't it, yes.

0:29:170:29:20

I love the window.

0:29:200:29:21

Yeah. The sun's coming in, lovely.

0:29:210:29:24

That makes a big difference.

0:29:240:29:26

It's lovely and light.

0:29:260:29:28

I'm doing quite well with showing you properties with beams, aren't I?

0:29:280:29:31

Trevor, how do you feel about these?

0:29:310:29:33

These, these are good, because

0:29:330:29:34

the ceiling is actually pretty high here,

0:29:340:29:36

so, yeah, I'm quite happy with that.

0:29:360:29:39

-Wouldn't need to paint them?

-No.

0:29:390:29:41

No. I wouldn't let him paint these.

0:29:410:29:44

-These are staying.

-Yes, these are staying.

0:29:440:29:45

-Yeah, OK.

-And along the hallway, you've actually also got a separate

0:29:450:29:49

-dining room as well.

-Right.

-Oh.

0:29:490:29:51

Or you could make that into a study, if you wanted to.

0:29:510:29:54

-OK.

-OK.

0:29:540:29:55

-Some options for you there.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

-Wonderful.

0:29:550:29:58

So far, so good.

0:29:580:29:59

-Yeah.

-Let's go upstairs.

0:29:590:30:03

A very enthusiastic and encouraging

0:30:030:30:05

response from Trevor and Eunice so far.

0:30:050:30:07

I'm on tenterhooks to see if it continues on the first floor.

0:30:070:30:12

Upstairs, there is a shower and bathroom with a deep tub

0:30:120:30:15

to soak in after long walks.

0:30:150:30:17

Bedrooms include a small double with twin beds

0:30:170:30:21

and another complete with a four-poster bed.

0:30:210:30:24

We are showing our couple the largest bedroom.

0:30:240:30:27

I love the size. Love the wardrobes.

0:30:270:30:29

-Do you?

-Love the wardrobes.

0:30:290:30:30

-Caught your eye.

-Wall-to-wall.

-Just about enough for you then?

0:30:300:30:33

Yes. Wall-to-wall wardrobes.

0:30:330:30:35

And the light.

0:30:350:30:37

I love the window, because it's a nice, light room.

0:30:370:30:40

-Good.

-Very nice.

-It's light and airy.

0:30:400:30:42

It's working for you both?

0:30:420:30:43

-It is, yeah.

-I'm so pleased you love the cupboards as well,

0:30:430:30:47

because they hold a secret, Eunice.

0:30:470:30:49

-Look.

-Really?

-Your own little en-suite.

0:30:490:30:52

-Great.

-Oh, wow, yeah.

0:30:520:30:54

But this isn't the only little magic door that this property has.

0:30:540:30:58

-Oh, right.

-Oh, no, any idea why?

0:30:580:31:01

What else there might be?

0:31:010:31:02

-I don't know.

-None at all.

-I don't know. No?

0:31:020:31:05

-No idea.

-Silence. Let's have a look.

0:31:050:31:08

Up till now this has been

0:31:080:31:09

a straightforward cottage in the Peaks.

0:31:090:31:12

But being that it's the Mystery House,

0:31:120:31:15

there's a huge surprise in store.

0:31:150:31:17

So, through here, in your dining room, you have a cupboard.

0:31:170:31:22

But it's not just any old cupboard.

0:31:220:31:24

It's another magic door.

0:31:240:31:26

-Oh, wow.

-Oh, gosh.

0:31:300:31:31

-It's another cottage.

-It is.

0:31:310:31:35

Attached to our Mystery House,

0:31:350:31:37

this adjoining property could offer them two additional bedrooms,

0:31:370:31:40

a kitchen-diner and a gloriously light sitting room

0:31:400:31:43

with a stone feature fireplace.

0:31:430:31:45

What a surprise.

0:31:470:31:48

It's a complete surprise, yeah.

0:31:480:31:50

-Yeah, wow.

-So you didn't see this coming at all?

0:31:500:31:52

-No.

-Not at all, no.

0:31:520:31:53

But I did say there is more to this house from the outside, didn't I?

0:31:530:31:56

You did. And I thought you might have twigged, but no.

0:31:560:31:59

-No.

-No.

-And with that door,

0:31:590:32:01

you can lock it and you have two separate properties.

0:32:010:32:04

-Yes.

-Now I know you didn't ask for a holiday let,

0:32:040:32:08

because we are thinking your family could come to stay,

0:32:080:32:11

and there's a lot of them.

0:32:110:32:12

However, should you decide to rent this out,

0:32:120:32:15

the annual income is just under £17,000 a year.

0:32:150:32:19

-Pretty good.

-Is it really?

-Yeah.

0:32:190:32:20

We could live in this end and let the other end out.

0:32:200:32:23

I was thinking that.

0:32:230:32:24

We'd use this in the winter and the larger end in the summer.

0:32:240:32:28

See, she's already planning.

0:32:280:32:30

She has. But I'm going to bring you both back to reality, I'm afraid.

0:32:300:32:33

-The price?

-Yes.

0:32:330:32:34

-Yes.

-Let's head back outside and then talk about figures.

0:32:340:32:38

-OK.

-OK.

0:32:380:32:39

-After you. Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:32:390:32:42

We certainly seem to be dangling two attractive propositions

0:32:420:32:46

before Trevor and Eunice.

0:32:460:32:47

In front of the Mystery House, there is a small lawn,

0:32:470:32:50

while the enclosed rear garden offers privacy.

0:32:500:32:54

The additional property has its own separate garden space.

0:32:540:32:58

So, here we have our driveway.

0:32:590:33:01

Now, we don't have a garage,

0:33:010:33:03

but we do have enough land I think to put one in, don't you?

0:33:030:33:06

Yes, I think so. I think there's plenty of room here, yeah.

0:33:060:33:08

-Yeah.

-Yes. Now, you don't have to buy both properties,

0:33:080:33:12

and I really want to stress that.

0:33:120:33:14

They can come separately.

0:33:140:33:15

So let's start off with the Mystery House, on its own,

0:33:150:33:19

how much do we think that is on the market for?

0:33:190:33:24

Probably I would go for...

0:33:240:33:26

..425,000.

0:33:270:33:29

I was thinking a little bit less than that.

0:33:290:33:31

I was thinking more 410,000.

0:33:310:33:33

Interesting. This main house is on the market

0:33:330:33:39

for £395,000.

0:33:390:33:41

-Ooh!

-Oh! You're closer this time.

0:33:410:33:43

-That's good.

-That's good. That's better than what we thought, yes.

0:33:430:33:46

So not only is it better than you thought, but it's also,

0:33:460:33:49

and most importantly, £105,000 under your top budget.

0:33:490:33:53

-That's right.

-I'm now going to open it up and say,

0:33:530:33:56

if you chose to buy both properties, and you really don't need to,

0:33:560:33:59

but if you did, the asking price for both properties - £675,000.

0:33:590:34:06

Now, the reason we decided to show you this is because we know you were

0:34:060:34:10

considering renting out your property, weren't you?

0:34:100:34:12

-Yes, yes.

-So there is the option perhaps of selling yours...

0:34:120:34:17

Some food for thought there, yes.

0:34:170:34:18

..and having it on your doorstep,

0:34:180:34:20

so it's much easier to look after and you benefit from those extra

0:34:200:34:23

bedrooms when the family come to stay.

0:34:230:34:25

-Definitely.

-A lot to think about.

0:34:250:34:27

Totally appreciate that.

0:34:270:34:29

Why don't you have another look together on your own

0:34:290:34:31

and I'll meet you when you're ready?

0:34:310:34:32

-Thank you.

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:34:320:34:35

It's an interesting one, isn't it?

0:34:350:34:37

They were thinking of renting out Eunice's own home, however

0:34:370:34:42

if they put all of that together

0:34:420:34:43

and bought these two properties, they'd get an income,

0:34:430:34:47

all their family could come to stay,

0:34:470:34:50

and it is in the most beautiful setting.

0:34:500:34:53

Well under budget,

0:34:550:34:56

this charming stone cottage features three bedrooms with a possibility of

0:34:560:35:01

a fourth. There is a spacious sitting room

0:35:010:35:03

and separate dining room,

0:35:030:35:04

while the rear garden provides privacy and space for Trevor's car.

0:35:040:35:09

Also on offer is a two-bedroom annexe which could be purchased

0:35:090:35:12

for an additional £280,000.

0:35:120:35:16

I was really surprised when she led us through the door,

0:35:160:35:18

it was so narrow. I thought maybe it was a cupboard.

0:35:180:35:21

I could not believe it was a holiday let, so close to!

0:35:210:35:26

We're certainly going to look at it because we've got other options with

0:35:260:35:29

your house, which we weren't going to sell but that might come into the

0:35:290:35:33

-picture now.

-And we never thought of doing a holiday let, actually,

0:35:330:35:38

it never came into...

0:35:380:35:40

-No.

-..our heads, but it's just given us food for thought.

0:35:400:35:44

Oh, the Mystery House.

0:35:460:35:48

It's certainly put them in a quandary, hasn't it?

0:35:480:35:50

There we are. You weren't expecting that one, were you?

0:35:510:35:54

-Not at all.

-Nope. That's a curveball, that one.

0:35:540:35:56

-Certainly.

-So that's it, you've seen all three of our properties.

0:35:560:35:59

-Yeah.

-Let's go and have a chat.

0:35:590:36:01

OK.

0:36:010:36:02

Daffodils in bloom and longer days means spring is here,

0:36:090:36:12

and for sheep farmers that's lambing season,

0:36:120:36:15

one of the most challenging times of the year. And as the average age of

0:36:150:36:19

farmers in Britain is currently 59,

0:36:190:36:22

the industry is in desperate need of some 60,000 new recruits within the

0:36:220:36:26

next decade.

0:36:260:36:28

Whilst in the area, I'm visiting Reaseheath agricultural college,

0:36:310:36:35

just outside the Peaks, in Cheshire,

0:36:350:36:37

to meet four farmers of the future.

0:36:370:36:40

Rich, Jemima, Georgia and Rob.

0:36:400:36:44

They're learning both time-honoured traditional farming methods and the

0:36:440:36:47

modern techniques that will shape tomorrow's industry.

0:36:470:36:52

So, thank you, it's great to meet you all today.

0:36:520:36:54

So, tell me why did you decide to enrol here?

0:36:540:36:57

Farming's my passion, I wanted to do that and further my knowledge.

0:36:570:37:00

And did you know you always wanted to be a farmer, it's in your blood?

0:37:000:37:04

-Yeah, pretty much, yes.

-So literally on your course from start to finish

0:37:040:37:08

you learn every aspect of modern-day farming?

0:37:080:37:11

Obviously, it's learning on the job.

0:37:110:37:13

If we were anywhere else where they didn't have this,

0:37:130:37:15

we wouldn't have the experience behind it.

0:37:150:37:17

I mean, is there things that you learn on this course

0:37:170:37:20

that you take home and it's something your parents

0:37:200:37:22

haven't implemented, they haven't done,

0:37:220:37:24

-it's new to them?

-I mean, yeah, absolutely,

0:37:240:37:26

they're always interested to know

0:37:260:37:27

what we've been learning and to actually take

0:37:270:37:30

-an interest in it.

-And, Georgie,

0:37:300:37:31

are there farmers in the UK who are looking at you and this agricultural

0:37:310:37:35

college and asking you to do research on their behalf?

0:37:350:37:38

Currently, because it's lambing period and we have orphaned lambs,

0:37:380:37:43

they are going onto

0:37:430:37:44

an automatic feeder,

0:37:440:37:46

so that's working with a company in the industry doing a trial for other

0:37:460:37:50

farmers to see if it works.

0:37:500:37:51

How incredible, to think in a couple of years' time they might be

0:37:510:37:54

implementing things that you've helped to research here.

0:37:540:37:57

Well, it is lambing season.

0:37:590:38:00

Any jobs I can help you out with?

0:38:000:38:03

I think we've still got some tagging to do,

0:38:030:38:05

and there's also some bottle-feeding to do of lambs, so...

0:38:050:38:07

I'd love to do that!

0:38:070:38:09

Right. I'll follow you.

0:38:090:38:10

Thank you.

0:38:100:38:12

But before we get to postnatal duties, it's all hands on deck

0:38:120:38:16

with some very expectant mothers.

0:38:160:38:18

While the ewes are lambing at least one student is on hand around the

0:38:180:38:22

clock. Hopefully Rob and Georgia can guide me through a smooth birth.

0:38:220:38:27

I can see the legs already.

0:38:270:38:28

-Is that the leg?

-Yeah.

0:38:280:38:29

So I'm going to put my hand in and see what we've got there.

0:38:290:38:32

I can feel two front feet, and a nose.

0:38:320:38:35

-So that's a good sign, she's like that?

-That's a good sign,

0:38:350:38:37

that's how you want the lamb.

0:38:370:38:39

I can see it's already beginning to come out.

0:38:390:38:41

Is there anything I can do to help?

0:38:410:38:42

Yeah. If you grab one foot, just pull that one out.

0:38:420:38:45

-Yes.

-Then you grab the other foot as well, and pull with.

0:38:450:38:47

-Yeah.

-You can feel when she pushes.

0:38:470:38:49

Yes, and then when she pushes...

0:38:490:38:51

-You do that.

-I work with her.

-Yes, that's it.

-Here we go.

0:38:510:38:53

I'm pulling.

0:38:530:38:55

Here comes the head!

0:38:550:38:57

And once you pull it out, just leave the lamb on the cord.

0:38:570:39:00

Wipe the gunk from around its nose.

0:39:000:39:03

Look at that, already!

0:39:030:39:05

And grab the lamb by the two front feet.

0:39:050:39:07

-Take her to Mum.

-Yes.

0:39:070:39:09

Oh, it's making little noises!

0:39:090:39:11

Here you go, Mum. There we are.

0:39:110:39:13

How incredible was that?!

0:39:150:39:17

Within a couple of days of their birth, all lambs

0:39:200:39:23

are electronically tagged for identification.

0:39:230:39:27

And the purpose of this is for the traceability of the food chain, so

0:39:270:39:30

you'll know that it's come off this farm

0:39:300:39:32

when it goes into a supermarket and it

0:39:320:39:34

can be traced right the way back to this moment.

0:39:340:39:37

So this is just like piercing his ears.

0:39:370:39:39

-Is it going to hurt him?

-No, not at all.

0:39:390:39:41

-A bit closer to the ear...

-There?

0:39:410:39:43

Yeah. Squeeze.

0:39:430:39:45

-Was that all right?

-Yeah, brilliant.

0:39:470:39:49

Sorry about that. Ewes only have two teats,

0:39:490:39:53

so when a mother delivers a large litter of lambs, feeding can be a

0:39:530:39:56

challenge. That's when the human touch steps in.

0:39:560:40:00

Jemima, I believe this is another little hungry fellow.

0:40:000:40:04

-Yes.

-So once they've had enough, and you've bottle fed them,

0:40:040:40:08

can they go on an automated feeder?

0:40:080:40:09

Yeah. With our automated feeder that we're doing a trial with,

0:40:090:40:12

we put them onto that and...

0:40:120:40:15

Look at that!

0:40:150:40:16

A hungry little person but a healthy little person at the same time.

0:40:160:40:21

-Good sign, isn't it?

-Definitely.

0:40:210:40:23

The lambs are in safe hands

0:40:240:40:25

thanks to this group of dedicated young students.

0:40:250:40:28

We wish them luck with their training as they acquire the skills

0:40:280:40:32

to become the farmers of tomorrow.

0:40:320:40:34

I think the Mystery House left

0:40:410:40:43

Trevor and Eunice a little bewildered.

0:40:430:40:46

It certainly was a lot to take in,

0:40:460:40:49

but are they going to put an offer on it

0:40:490:40:52

or indeed any of our houses?

0:40:520:40:54

Let's go and find out.

0:40:540:40:55

Well, Trevor and Eunice,

0:40:580:41:00

you started your relationship commuting up and down the M6.

0:41:000:41:03

I wonder, have you reached a final destination together?

0:41:030:41:07

Yes, I think... I think we're a long way towards it.

0:41:070:41:10

I wouldn't say we're quite there yet.

0:41:100:41:12

Out of all the properties we showed you, is there a favourite?

0:41:120:41:16

I think the favourite is probably the Mystery House.

0:41:160:41:18

-Is it?

-Yes.

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:41:180:41:21

I mean, we did like the first house as well, but it just couldn't offer

0:41:210:41:25

everything that we wanted.

0:41:250:41:26

I think the Mystery House pretty much did, didn't it?

0:41:260:41:29

It did, yes, yeah.

0:41:290:41:30

So, when it comes to the Mystery,

0:41:300:41:31

-because obviously you've got that lovely main house...

-Yes.

0:41:310:41:34

But you've also got the holiday let that is attached, so it's really the

0:41:340:41:38

main house that you've got your eye on.

0:41:380:41:39

-It is, really.

-Yes, I think so, yes.

0:41:390:41:41

Rather than the business.

0:41:410:41:42

So a second viewing perhaps on the cards?

0:41:420:41:44

Yes, we'll consider that, definitely.

0:41:440:41:47

-Yes.

-So, the last few days has been a positive process for you both?

0:41:470:41:51

We've really enjoyed it.

0:41:510:41:52

It has been, yeah, really good.

0:41:520:41:54

It's really made us think about houses internal and areas and...

0:41:540:42:00

-Definitely, yes.

-Obviously, we really hope that you love

0:42:000:42:03

the Mystery House the second time round

0:42:030:42:05

and perhaps are in a position to take it a little bit further,

0:42:050:42:08

but whatever happens, all the very best with your continued search.

0:42:080:42:12

Your first home together here, in the Peak District.

0:42:120:42:15

Exciting times ahead,

0:42:150:42:16

-and we wish you both the very best of luck.

-Thank you very much.

0:42:160:42:19

-Thank you very much. It's been really good.

-We've enjoyed it, yes.

0:42:190:42:22

Although we managed to find three houses

0:42:260:42:29

all under budget and within the Peak District National Park,

0:42:290:42:34

I'm not sure Trevor and Eunice are going to be putting in an offer,

0:42:340:42:38

sadly, on any of them,

0:42:380:42:40

but what we have done is set them on their way,

0:42:400:42:42

and we wish them all the very best because, let's face it,

0:42:420:42:47

buying your first home together is a truly exciting time.

0:42:470:42:52

So, that's it from me, from this beautiful part of the world,

0:42:520:42:56
