In olden days, many of the residents in coastal villages like the one I'm

0:00:020:00:05

in today made their living from the sea - fishing, of course.

0:00:050:00:07

But for some of the residents in this particular village,

0:00:070:00:10

that wasn't the only way they made their money.

0:00:100:00:13

Well, my hearties,

0:00:130:00:14

I'll tell you how they cashed in and exactly where I am in just a moment.

0:00:140:00:18

It's a brand-new life chapter that's drawing today's house-buyer to new

0:00:360:00:40

territories and fulfil her dream of living in the English countryside.

0:00:400:00:45

I love it, it just feels, yeah, it feels

0:00:450:00:47

exactly what I was looking for.

0:00:470:00:49

And emotions continue to run high as our properties

0:00:490:00:51

leave her lost for words.

0:00:510:00:53

I can't speak.

0:00:530:00:54

Today, I'm on the Devon-Dorset border and, right now,

0:01:020:01:05

I'm in the East Devon village of Beer,

0:01:050:01:07

which in the 17th and early 18th century was infamous for smuggling.

0:01:070:01:12

Contraband like brandy,

0:01:120:01:14

tea and coffee would be brought across the waters from France

0:01:140:01:18

and landed right here on this very beach.

0:01:180:01:20

Now, the authorities soon got wise to this and started patrolling the

0:01:200:01:24

area, but the locals, many of whom were party to the smuggling,

0:01:240:01:28

would light warning beacons up on the clifftops to let the smugglers

0:01:280:01:32

know that they should sink their contraband and come back and collect

0:01:320:01:35

it once the coast was clear.

0:01:350:01:37

A tiny snapshot of history here on this Jurassic coastline, millions

0:01:370:01:42

of years in the making.

0:01:420:01:43

On the south coast of England,

0:01:450:01:46

the counties of Devon and Dorset are united by this 95-mile stretch of

0:01:460:01:51

Jurassic coastline.

0:01:510:01:52

The pinnacle of this far-reaching World Heritage Site is the majestic

0:01:540:01:59

Golden Cap in Dorset.

0:01:590:02:01

Over 190 metres tall, it's the highest point on the southern coast.

0:02:010:02:06

Further west, in neighbouring Devon,

0:02:060:02:08

the ancient fishing village of Beer in historic Lyme Bay has more than

0:02:080:02:13

a smuggling past to its name.

0:02:130:02:14

Today, it's the archetypal seaside setting with a clean,

0:02:150:02:19

colourful beach and pretty, narrow streets

0:02:190:02:22

lined with attractive buildings,

0:02:220:02:24

many built of local flint.

0:02:240:02:25

Moving inland, there is a stunning rural landscape

0:02:270:02:29

in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

0:02:290:02:33

Its green pastures are framed by thriving hedgerows and waterways,

0:02:330:02:38

such as the River Otter, flowing through the pretty valleys.

0:02:380:02:42

So, with its mix of lush countryside,

0:02:420:02:44

rugged coastline and picture-perfect villages,

0:02:440:02:48

this region is an ideal choice of escape for a peaceful country life.

0:02:480:02:52

Well, as we have just seen,

0:02:580:02:59

this is an absolutely gorgeous part of the West Country.

0:02:590:03:03

It's got a little bit of just about everything that you could possibly

0:03:030:03:06

want, including some fantastic properties available at prices that

0:03:060:03:11

don't have to break the bank - if you know which side of the border

0:03:110:03:14

to look on.

0:03:140:03:15

The average price of a detached home here in Devon is £364,000.

0:03:150:03:20

Now, that is £30,000 above the national figure but when you compare

0:03:200:03:25

it to a similar home in neighbouring Dorset, available for £410,000,

0:03:250:03:31

it seems like a real bargain -

0:03:310:03:33

a little bit of knowledge worth knowing if you happen to be today's

0:03:330:03:36

buyer, who is on the hunt for the property of her dreams.

0:03:360:03:39

Funeral celebrant Debbie, from Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire, is

0:03:390:03:43

preparing for a big life change.

0:03:430:03:45

And to help her make the right decision,

0:03:470:03:49

she'll have her great friend Ash right by her side.

0:03:490:03:52

I've known Ash for a very long time

0:03:520:03:54

because we were at the same school together,

0:03:540:03:56

I was best friends with her brother,

0:03:560:03:59

so we've known each other for a very long time, but about 16 years ago,

0:03:590:04:03

we found ourselves back into the same crowd of friends,

0:04:030:04:07

so we've been best friends since then.

0:04:070:04:09

The pair have supported each other through life's ups and downs and

0:04:110:04:14

have forged a close friendship.

0:04:140:04:16

Debbie is bubbly, fantastic, pragmatic, adorable.

0:04:170:04:23

She cares for everyone before herself.

0:04:230:04:25

I love her honesty, as a friend.

0:04:260:04:28

I love the way that she has dealt with things,

0:04:280:04:31

things that have been thrown at her.

0:04:310:04:33

Debbie's lived in her current five-bedroom house

0:04:370:04:40

for the past 13 years.

0:04:400:04:41

But after suffering a personal tragedy,

0:04:420:04:45

she's decided it's time to head to pastures new.

0:04:450:04:48

It was always planned for my husband and me to move once the kids left

0:04:490:04:54

home, but, sadly,

0:04:540:04:55

I lost my husband two years ago and I'm ready now for a new challenge.

0:04:550:05:02

I've travelled quite a bit to the sort of Devon area

0:05:020:05:06

and from what I've seen of it, I really love it.

0:05:060:05:09

I just want to be able to move on and do something new with my life

0:05:110:05:14

and I know that Neil would definitely have appreciated that.

0:05:140:05:17

Debbie's four children have flown the nest.

0:05:190:05:22

Her eldest son, Aidan, lives in the West Country

0:05:220:05:24

and her eldest daughter, Sam, may be joining her in due course.

0:05:240:05:28

But to begin with,

0:05:290:05:30

she'll be making the move south together with her trusty camper van.

0:05:300:05:34

Well, I bought my motorhome six months after Neil died.

0:05:350:05:39

I felt that I needed something that he wouldn't have done to help me

0:05:390:05:44

move my life forward a bit and because he was such a big chap,

0:05:440:05:47

there was no way he was ever going to get a caravan or motorhome,

0:05:470:05:50

his feet would have stuck out the windows.

0:05:500:05:52

I've been to all along the Jurassic Coast,

0:05:520:05:54

where I love to do the fossil hunting, so that's how I know

0:05:540:05:58

that that area is calm and beautiful and what's attracted me to it.

0:05:580:06:03

When she's not on the road, Debbie has plenty of plans

0:06:040:06:07

to fill her days at home.

0:06:070:06:09

I'd really love to take my work with me,

0:06:090:06:12

but I also would like to return to my craft roots, my sewing roots.

0:06:120:06:16

I had a soft furnishing business before but now I really enjoy making

0:06:160:06:20

quilts and I'd like to extend that and to use it to perhaps make money

0:06:200:06:24

from that as well. I just don't seem to have time for any of those things

0:06:240:06:28

at the minute and I'm desperate, really,

0:06:280:06:30

to reclaim some of those back.

0:06:300:06:31

She's also looking forward to visits from her family and friends.

0:06:310:06:36

To be honest, there's no getting away from Deb.

0:06:360:06:39

Wherever she'll be in the world, not just this country,

0:06:390:06:42

wherever she'll be, she'll organise something, she'll get us down there.

0:06:420:06:47

We love our prosecco, we love our chats and we love the countryside.

0:06:470:06:53

So with her home already sold and Ash in tow for support,

0:06:530:06:57

Debbie's all set to start her new journey.

0:06:570:07:00

It's going to be really hard to go

0:07:020:07:04

because obviously it's Neil's and my home,

0:07:040:07:07

our first home and our only home together, but...

0:07:070:07:11

..it's important for me to sort of leave that behind and start again.

0:07:120:07:15

I can't tell you how much I'll miss her.

0:07:160:07:18

I don't want her to go but I know that she needs to do this to move on

0:07:180:07:22

in her life. Absolutely.

0:07:220:07:24

Debbie loves the areas close to where West Dorset meets East Devon,

0:07:280:07:32

but she's happy to extend her search north to Somerset.

0:07:320:07:36

Before we begin our house-hunt in earnest,

0:07:360:07:38

we're meeting up to discuss exactly what it is she's looking out for.

0:07:380:07:42

Morning!

0:07:440:07:45

Debbie, Ash, welcome to the West Country.

0:07:460:07:48

Debbie, this is a huge move for you at this point in your life.

0:07:480:07:52

Yes, it's a huge move. Exciting.

0:07:520:07:55

As part of the move, I understand your eldest daughter, Sam,

0:07:550:07:58

she might be joining you at the property

0:07:580:08:00

or maybe coming to live nearby?

0:08:000:08:01

-Tell me about that.

-Yeah, Sam has Down's syndrome and unfortunately

0:08:010:08:04

she's been very ill over the last four years, four or five years,

0:08:040:08:08

actually. But she's in residential care at the moment,

0:08:080:08:11

so although I wouldn't move her straightaway with me,

0:08:110:08:14

there would be a very slow transition.

0:08:140:08:16

I would want her closer to me.

0:08:160:08:17

And what would you love to see in your dream new home?

0:08:170:08:20

A character cottage.

0:08:200:08:22

I need to have a real fire.

0:08:220:08:23

Or the potential to put one in.

0:08:230:08:25

I'd like a kitchen-diner that I can put a sofa in.

0:08:250:08:28

I want to get back into lots of walking,

0:08:280:08:30

so a boot room where I could throw all the muck would be really lovely.

0:08:300:08:34

South-facing garden would be brilliant, but not big.

0:08:340:08:37

Just somewhere I can sit with a glass of prosecco.

0:08:370:08:40

With me!

0:08:400:08:41

So, how many bedrooms would you like to see in the property?

0:08:420:08:45

A minimum of two bedrooms.

0:08:450:08:47

Or if there could be a third bedroom or study, that would be fantastic.

0:08:470:08:51

And, Ash, are you going to be keeping an eye

0:08:510:08:53

on that spare room situation?

0:08:530:08:54

Because I'm sure you'll be coming to visit a lot.

0:08:540:08:56

Well, I'll choose my furnishings, that's for sure.

0:08:560:08:59

So, Debbie, the isolation factor with the property,

0:09:000:09:03

you don't mind being on your own, as it were?

0:09:030:09:06

No, not at all, I'm not...

0:09:060:09:07

I enjoy my own company.

0:09:070:09:08

I love the company of others but, you know,

0:09:080:09:10

I quite like being on the edge or out of it,

0:09:100:09:14

so I can make my decision whether I want to be fully involved in all of

0:09:140:09:18

-that.

-And what's the budget for our search?

0:09:180:09:21

Well, my maximum would be £340,000.

0:09:210:09:25

A little bit less if it needs work doing to it.

0:09:250:09:28

Ash, are you ready to give us both some moral support?

0:09:280:09:30

Oh, yes, let's go!

0:09:300:09:31

Especially in this weather! Come on, let's start.

0:09:310:09:34

Debbie has a budget of £340,000 to buy her a character cottage with

0:09:370:09:43

a large kitchen-diner.

0:09:430:09:45

She would like at least two bedrooms, a sewing room

0:09:450:09:49

and outside, a small, manageable garden.

0:09:490:09:53

Location-wise, she'd be equally happy on the edge of a village

0:09:530:09:57

or in a more isolated spot.

0:09:570:09:59

We've hand-picked a wonderful selection of properties

0:10:010:10:04

for Debbie and Ash to view

0:10:040:10:06

and after they've completed their tour of each,

0:10:060:10:08

they'll find out its price.

0:10:080:10:10

The last stop, to the Mystery House,

0:10:100:10:12

will reveal a secret that could be the icing on the cake for Debbie.

0:10:120:10:17

We're starting our search in Chard Junction,

0:10:220:10:25

situated right on the West Dorset-Somerset border.

0:10:250:10:28

Nearby is the village of Tatworth,

0:10:280:10:31

whose name derives from the old English "tat" and "worp",

0:10:310:10:35

meaning "a cheerful farm".

0:10:350:10:37

There's a 15th-century pub here and many attractive stone buildings,

0:10:370:10:41

typical of the region.

0:10:410:10:43

Our first property is just a mile down the road

0:10:430:10:46

and sits on the Dorset-Somerset border.

0:10:460:10:49

Here we are.

0:10:490:10:51

-House number one.

-I like it.

0:10:530:10:55

I like the shape of the windows.

0:10:550:10:56

I love the shape of the windows.

0:10:560:10:58

And I love the view.

0:10:580:11:00

Yeah, looking promising.

0:11:000:11:02

Excited!

0:11:030:11:05

Well, you wanted somewhere isolated where you've got that feeling

0:11:050:11:08

of the great outdoors. You've still got three neighbours here.

0:11:080:11:11

Feeling a bit emotional, actually.

0:11:110:11:13

I can't wait to look inside.

0:11:150:11:16

OK, let's not waste any time,

0:11:160:11:17

let's get straight in there because if you love the outside,

0:11:170:11:20

I love the inside even more.

0:11:200:11:21

-Oh, wow.

-I think it's even more special.

0:11:210:11:23

This charming semidetached home is thought to be around 200 years old.

0:11:240:11:29

Once a single-storey farm cottage, it's been extended several times.

0:11:290:11:35

Come in through that lovely latch door there.

0:11:350:11:38

In you come. This is the main living space.

0:11:390:11:43

-Yep!

-Wow!

0:11:430:11:44

Yes.

0:11:460:11:48

Love it.

0:11:480:11:49

Oh!

0:11:510:11:52

Tell me everything you're thinking.

0:11:530:11:54

Are you OK, Debbie?

0:11:540:11:56

Don't start!

0:11:560:11:58

I love it, it just feels...

0:11:590:12:01

Yeah, it feels exactly what I was looking for.

0:12:010:12:03

Neil and I were very happy where we lived but...

0:12:030:12:06

..this feels more forever home.

0:12:070:12:10

So, this first room, pretty perfect.

0:12:100:12:13

-Yes.

-We are about to step into the kitchen space.

0:12:130:12:17

-Shall we see what we've got for you?

-Yes, please.

-Come on!

0:12:170:12:20

The kitchen is just behind the sitting room.

0:12:240:12:26

It was handmade locally and the central island

0:12:260:12:29

features decorative old church panels.

0:12:290:12:32

This is our kitchen!

0:12:390:12:40

-I don't know what to say.

-It's not very often she's speechless, or me.

0:12:430:12:47

It's perfect.

0:12:470:12:48

I mean, there is absolutely nothing in here that I would change.

0:12:480:12:52

As a group of friends, our group of friends,

0:12:520:12:54

I don't think we'd be leaving this kitchen.

0:12:540:12:57

I'm gobsmacked, I really am.

0:12:570:13:00

On the side of the kitchen here, just behind us,

0:13:000:13:03

the garage has been converted.

0:13:030:13:04

The current owner uses it as a sewing room.

0:13:040:13:07

Wow. This, so far, is...

0:13:070:13:10

..perfect. Really perfect.

0:13:120:13:14

Shall we see more? I don't want to make you sad!

0:13:160:13:18

-No more tears.

-They're tears of happiness.

0:13:180:13:20

Tears of happiness, that's good, that's good.

0:13:200:13:22

This cosy cottage is stirring emotions in all of us.

0:13:240:13:27

It seems it's just what Debbie was hoping for.

0:13:270:13:30

A beautiful handmade stairway leads up to the first floor,

0:13:300:13:34

where there's a panelled family bathroom, complete with

0:13:340:13:38

a roll-top bath, and three bedrooms,

0:13:380:13:40

a small double with a feature window and views to the front

0:13:400:13:44

and next door, there's a slightly smaller room,

0:13:440:13:46

which just leaves the en suite master.

0:13:460:13:49

-BOTH:

-Oh, wow.

0:13:500:13:51

-What do you think?

-It's exactly the sort of thing I would have, yeah.

0:13:520:13:59

I love the window.

0:13:590:14:01

You've got light coming through there as well.

0:14:010:14:03

I can't believe it's got an en suite.

0:14:030:14:05

It just feels so right, it really does.

0:14:050:14:08

That gut feeling is so strong here and...

0:14:080:14:11

Oh, dear!

0:14:120:14:13

You've described the house as perfect,

0:14:150:14:17

shall we see if the price is perfect as well?

0:14:170:14:19

That's what I'm worried about.

0:14:190:14:20

Come on, let's get outside and guess that price.

0:14:200:14:24

The house has a small patio to the side, which can be accessed via the

0:14:240:14:29

sewing room, but the main garden's found at the front.

0:14:290:14:32

This is perfect. I don't...

0:14:340:14:36

I just want somewhere to sit.

0:14:360:14:37

There's no-one overlooking.

0:14:370:14:39

I know it's strange having your garden in the front of the property

0:14:390:14:43

but this looks like all this is my garden.

0:14:430:14:45

Debbie, what do you think this property is on the market for?

0:14:450:14:48

I think it's beyond or the top or beyond my...

0:14:480:14:52

So, £340,000.

0:14:520:14:55

-Ash, what do you think?

-I think, because it takes so many boxes,

0:14:560:15:00

I'm going to go for 355.

0:15:000:15:02

This house is on the market for £339,950.

0:15:050:15:10

Wow.

0:15:100:15:11

There you go.

0:15:130:15:15

Well, now you know the price of this property, why don't you have another

0:15:150:15:18

-look around and we'll catch up in a bit?

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:15:180:15:21

This delightful period cottage has snuck in just under Debbie's budget

0:15:250:15:29

and provides plenty of character,

0:15:290:15:32

along with a large country kitchen-diner.

0:15:320:15:34

There are three bedrooms and a garden

0:15:340:15:37

perfect for taking in the views.

0:15:370:15:39

Location-wise, it's rural but not isolated.

0:15:390:15:42

I really like this room because it's nice having it off the kitchen.

0:15:440:15:48

Yeah. The windows are brilliant.

0:15:480:15:51

I would perhaps put a wall up,

0:15:510:15:53

a stud wall up there and hide the washing machine

0:15:530:15:55

and tumble dryer away.

0:15:550:15:56

All my sewing stuff can go out there as well.

0:15:560:15:58

I was very emotional coming in, especially downstairs,

0:15:580:16:02

and also in the master bedroom because

0:16:020:16:05

everything that I'd visualised was here.

0:16:050:16:09

It's bigger than I think she expected

0:16:090:16:11

and certainly what I expected

0:16:110:16:13

and, yes, it is a sociable, homely, warm, comfortable, beautiful home.

0:16:130:16:20

I am now thinking,

0:16:200:16:22

how am I going to break the news to my children and my friends that this

0:16:220:16:26

is probably going to be a reality?

0:16:260:16:27

-Still smiling.

-Yes!

0:16:330:16:34

So, property one, good start?

0:16:340:16:36

-Very good.

-I feel like you've already moved in.

0:16:360:16:38

-I'm getting that sense.

-Yeah, I have.

0:16:380:16:40

The removal van's just down the road.

0:16:400:16:43

Well, look, we've still got two more properties to see,

0:16:430:16:45

-but definitely a good start.

-Very good.

0:16:450:16:47

The extensive shoreline of the Dorset-Devon coast

0:16:540:16:57

has been a feature of the region for millions of years

0:16:570:17:00

and beachcombers may be lucky enough to stumble across the prehistoric

0:17:000:17:05

fossils this area is famous for.

0:17:050:17:07

But one local resident combs the shingle for treasure

0:17:080:17:11

of a different kind.

0:17:110:17:13

Grace O'Day Smith gathers washed-up seaweed, which she's been using

0:17:130:17:17

to create natural health care products for the past ten years.

0:17:170:17:21

Debbie and Ash have come to meet her on Charmouth Beach

0:17:210:17:25

to find out more about Dorset's miracle plant.

0:17:250:17:28

So, Grace, this is amazing,

0:17:280:17:31

this wonderful site you've got here.

0:17:310:17:33

Is this the reason why you came to Dorset?

0:17:330:17:36

Indeed. I never regret it.

0:17:360:17:38

I was so amazed how beautiful the place is.

0:17:380:17:41

I couldn't believe it.

0:17:410:17:43

I'm also, for my business, I'm making seaweed soap,

0:17:430:17:46

seaweed face cream and seaweed shampoo.

0:17:460:17:50

So, Grace, why would we make products from seaweed?

0:17:500:17:53

What are the benefits?

0:17:530:17:54

Seaweed is so beneficial.

0:17:540:17:56

It's amazing.

0:17:560:17:57

For instance, it's full of iodine.

0:17:570:17:59

It also has iron, bromine, magnesium.

0:17:590:18:03

Most of this seaweed around here, the Jurassic Coastline,

0:18:030:18:07

is embedded with prehistoric minerals,

0:18:070:18:09

-so that makes the seaweed unique.

-Wow.

0:18:090:18:13

Grace studied organic chemistry in her native Nigeria before

0:18:130:18:18

attending university in Edinburgh.

0:18:180:18:20

Shocked at the amount of chemicals in western cosmetics,

0:18:200:18:24

she wanted to produce a more natural alternative.

0:18:240:18:26

I always loved making things, even right from childhood.

0:18:260:18:30

I also have very sensitive skin, so I thought to myself,

0:18:300:18:34

why not create something that is pure, natural

0:18:340:18:37

and then for everybody to use?

0:18:370:18:39

There are three different varieties Grace collects

0:18:410:18:43

and anything that's washed up on the shore is OK to take.

0:18:430:18:47

Debbie and Ash are helping her to gather the seaweed

0:18:470:18:50

before learning how it's transformed into soap.

0:18:500:18:53

Oh, there's more seaweed here.

0:18:530:18:54

-Is that OK?

-Yes.

0:18:540:18:56

That's fine.

0:18:560:18:57

-And this is kelp.

-That's kelp?

0:19:020:19:04

-Yes.

-The bubbles on it.

0:19:040:19:06

Yes.

0:19:060:19:07

All Grace's products are organic and produced in her nearby cottage.

0:19:070:19:11

The first stage in making her soap is a secret three-day process of

0:19:110:19:16

extracting a gel from the seaweed.

0:19:160:19:18

Next, beeswax,

0:19:180:19:21

shea butter and cocoa butter are heated along with olive oil.

0:19:210:19:27

The seaweed gel is added to a mixture of water and caustic soda

0:19:360:19:41

before both liquids are combined.

0:19:410:19:43

This is where the magic begins.

0:19:440:19:46

Do you have to keep stirring when you pour it in?

0:19:460:19:49

Oh, yes. All the time.

0:19:490:19:50

Is that so that all the ingredients mix together?

0:19:510:19:54

Yes. This soap, you can see, is beginning to thicken a bit now.

0:19:540:19:58

-Is that why you're pouring it slowly?

-Yeah.

0:19:580:20:00

-Because it thickens?

-Yeah.

0:20:000:20:02

When the mixture has thickened,

0:20:020:20:03

it's poured into a mould and left to set for 24 hours.

0:20:030:20:08

The soap then matures for around six weeks.

0:20:080:20:11

There. That's our seaweed soap.

0:20:140:20:17

I can't believe we were picking seaweed and we've now got these

0:20:170:20:20

wonderful bars of soap.

0:20:200:20:21

Can we use these now?

0:20:210:20:23

I'm afraid it's not quite ready yet.

0:20:230:20:25

It needs to rest for another four weeks.

0:20:250:20:28

Oh, OK. Will that make the smell more intense?

0:20:280:20:30

Very intensive and also creamy, long-lasting.

0:20:300:20:35

When you touch it now, you can...

0:20:350:20:36

It feels really creamy.

0:20:360:20:37

Yes, and it's going to be long-lasting.

0:20:370:20:40

Thank you so much for showing us.

0:20:400:20:42

It's been so interesting. You might even see me pinching a bit of your

0:20:420:20:45

seaweed when I move down here.

0:20:450:20:47

-How nice.

-Thank you so much.

-I look forward to seeing you

0:20:470:20:50

-and all the best of luck for your house-hunting.

-Thank you.

0:20:500:20:52

Now, it's time to return to our house-hunt

0:20:530:20:56

and see if we can find Debbie her dream home.

0:20:560:20:59

For our next property stop,

0:21:060:21:08

we are heading across the border into south Somerset

0:21:080:21:11

and to the village of Isle Abbotts.

0:21:110:21:14

There's a village hall here and

0:21:140:21:15

the 13th-century church of Saint Mary The Virgin

0:21:150:21:19

with its intricate carvings and impressive 16th-century tower.

0:21:190:21:23

The narrow country lanes are flanked with stone houses,

0:21:230:21:27

some topped with thatch, which are typical

0:21:270:21:30

of a Somerset country village.

0:21:300:21:32

Just on the outskirts, in a peaceful setting,

0:21:320:21:35

we are arriving at our next offering.

0:21:350:21:38

So, here we are, property number two,

0:21:380:21:40

or should I say cottage number two?

0:21:400:21:42

-All of it?!

-All of it.

0:21:420:21:44

-What do you think?

-Yes!

0:21:440:21:46

-Huge.

-It was originally two cottages,

0:21:460:21:49

but they combined them in the '70s into one.

0:21:490:21:51

But the original part of the building dates back over 250 years.

0:21:510:21:54

-Wow.

-So, you wanted character...

0:21:540:21:56

-Yes.

-This has loads of it.

0:21:560:21:58

-Shall we head in?

-Yeah!

0:21:580:22:00

Let's go, come on.

0:22:000:22:01

This detached, double-fronted cottage is steeped in history.

0:22:020:22:06

There are records showing it exchanged hands for five shillings

0:22:060:22:10

way back in 1761.

0:22:100:22:13

In you come.

0:22:130:22:14

During its life, it's been both a shop and a post office.

0:22:140:22:17

Wow. Open fire.

0:22:210:22:23

You can sense that this is the really old part

0:22:230:22:25

because it's almost wobbly, you know?

0:22:250:22:28

It's got a nice feeling.

0:22:280:22:29

I wouldn't use it as a dining room because I don't need one.

0:22:300:22:32

I feel like I don't need one.

0:22:320:22:34

-But I haven't seen anywhere else yet.

-This would be your snug if...

0:22:340:22:37

I don't know. I suppose so.

0:22:370:22:38

There are two big living spaces downstairs.

0:22:380:22:42

Actually, the second one is bigger than this.

0:22:420:22:44

-OK.

-Behind the dining room lies a compact kitchen.

0:22:440:22:48

It may not be the entertaining space Debbie's after,

0:22:480:22:50

but hopefully the large sitting room and adjoining conservatory will make

0:22:500:22:54

up for it.

0:22:540:22:55

It's such a nice room.

0:22:580:22:59

It's a good size.

0:22:590:23:01

Keep the wood burner, open that up into an open fire?

0:23:010:23:03

Probably... I know people who are going to be shocked,

0:23:030:23:06

but I'd probably take the wood burner out and put a proper fire in.

0:23:060:23:08

But I quite like to see all the...

0:23:080:23:10

She can make it her own, for sure.

0:23:100:23:13

Great, well, that's downstairs. Shall we have a look upstairs?

0:23:130:23:16

-Yeah.

-Yes.

0:23:160:23:18

On the first floor, leading off from a bright central landing,

0:23:180:23:21

are three bedrooms, all serviced by a neutral tiled family bathroom.

0:23:210:23:26

There's a double bedroom with striking inlaid beams,

0:23:260:23:30

a smaller one next door with dual aspect windows

0:23:300:23:33

and running from the front to the back of the house is the master.

0:23:330:23:36

It's very sweet.

0:23:370:23:39

-Yeah, I like it.

-Yeah, I like it.

0:23:390:23:40

Yeah, it's...

0:23:400:23:41

-It's big.

-Lots of character.

0:23:440:23:46

-Yeah, I like it.

-Even though we're in a cottage

0:23:460:23:48

that's over 250 years old,

0:23:480:23:50

you've still got that kind of space that you were craving.

0:23:500:23:53

Well, there's a lovely garden to look at

0:23:530:23:55

and some outbuildings as well.

0:23:550:23:57

-Oh, right.

-So let's take a look at those and then let's guess the price

0:23:570:24:00

-of this one.

-OK.

-OK.

0:24:000:24:02

I'm definitely picking up a little apprehension from Debbie,

0:24:020:24:06

but it's a big move for her and she's got a lot to think about.

0:24:060:24:09

Outside, the enclosed garden is to the rear

0:24:110:24:14

with pretty borders and a patio area.

0:24:140:24:16

There is also a stone-built office,

0:24:180:24:20

which can make a perfect sewing room,

0:24:200:24:22

and a double garage with additional parking for Debbie's camper van.

0:24:220:24:26

So now you really get a sense of the traditional cottage garden that

0:24:270:24:31

comes with this kind of property. What do you think?

0:24:310:24:33

Yes, the space out here is really lovely.

0:24:330:24:35

South-facing-ish, so that's really nice.

0:24:350:24:38

And it also comes with the outbuildings here.

0:24:380:24:40

Yeah, that's very interesting.

0:24:400:24:42

I think I'd put my study and my work room out there.

0:24:420:24:45

And do you think this is a project

0:24:450:24:47

that Debs could really get stuck into?

0:24:470:24:49

Yes, most definitely. I think the garden size is perfect.

0:24:490:24:52

You know, it's fairly low-maintenance, really.

0:24:520:24:55

-So, yeah.

-Time to talk money.

0:24:550:24:58

What do you think this property is currently on the market for?

0:24:580:25:01

It does need some work doing.

0:25:010:25:03

315?

0:25:050:25:07

£315,000.

0:25:070:25:09

-Yeah.

-OK. What do you think it's on the market for?

0:25:090:25:12

Well, I think there's a bit more of a house than that price.

0:25:120:25:14

Maybe 330.

0:25:140:25:17

This property is on the market for £345,000.

0:25:170:25:22

-Ooh!

-Ooh.

0:25:220:25:24

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:25:240:25:25

Well, why don't you have another look around

0:25:270:25:29

now you know what the property's on the market for

0:25:290:25:32

and imagine what you might spend on it and then we'll have a little

0:25:320:25:35

-catch-up afterwards.

-OK.

0:25:350:25:36

Thank you.

0:25:360:25:37

This centuries-old cottage has rung in £5,000 above budget,

0:25:410:25:46

but it offers Debbie period charm

0:25:460:25:48

plus the potential to create the home she's dreaming of.

0:25:480:25:52

There are three bedrooms, a pretty garden

0:25:520:25:54

and it's located on the edge of the village.

0:25:540:25:57

When I walked into this property,

0:25:570:25:59

I didn't get the same gut reaction that I had before.

0:25:590:26:02

I like the quirkiness of it,

0:26:020:26:04

but I just didn't get that same "Wow" feeling.

0:26:040:26:07

This house is lovely, it's a lovely family home.

0:26:090:26:12

I think there is perhaps too much work for her to do for her budget,

0:26:120:26:16

really, to make it the home that she would want to.

0:26:160:26:19

-Had a good look round?

-Yes.

0:26:240:26:26

Well, that's it for the end of our first day of house-hunting.

0:26:260:26:28

-Good day?

-Yeah, it's been really good seeing the houses

0:26:280:26:31

-and what's around, really, yeah.

-Well, I think it's going to rain,

0:26:310:26:34

so shall we go and get something to warm us up?

0:26:340:26:36

-Hot chocolate or maybe something a bit stronger?

-Stronger!

0:26:360:26:39

It's day two of our trip around the Dorset-Devon borders

0:26:480:26:51

searching for a rural retreat for Debbie from Stoke Mandeville in

0:26:510:26:55

Buckinghamshire to call home.

0:26:550:26:57

She's got a £340,000 budget

0:26:570:27:00

and trusted friend Ash for moral support.

0:27:000:27:04

Still to come, the Mystery House proves a bit overwhelming.

0:27:040:27:08

Do I need my tissues?

0:27:080:27:10

I do need my tissues!

0:27:110:27:13

And I'll be discovering why the Jurassic Coast is a

0:27:130:27:16

wild larder - if you know where to look.

0:27:160:27:18

-Lunch!

-Good?

-Yeah! Good.

0:27:220:27:24

Well, what a fantastic first day in our property search,

0:27:300:27:34

finding house number one, which Debbie described as perfect,

0:27:340:27:37

so perfect, in fact, that it brought her and her supportive

0:27:370:27:40

best friend Ash to tears.

0:27:400:27:42

Where does that leave us today?

0:27:420:27:44

Well, it leaves us with the Mystery House.

0:27:440:27:47

I think we've found a property that is not only fabulous,

0:27:470:27:49

but will give Debbie the chance to continue her adventures in Butch,

0:27:490:27:53

her camper van, in peace of mind.

0:27:530:27:55

Oh, and, well, after two fabulous counties,

0:27:550:27:59

why stop there when you could have three?

0:27:590:28:01

For our third and final stop, to the Mystery House,

0:28:090:28:12

we border hop once again, this time into Devon

0:28:120:28:15

and the village of Uffculme.

0:28:150:28:17

Situated in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,

0:28:180:28:22

there's a good range of amenities here

0:28:220:28:24

and the village is also home to one of the oldest woollen mills

0:28:240:28:28

in the UK, which has been in operation for 220 years.

0:28:280:28:32

Nearby, and within the grounds of a historic estate,

0:28:320:28:36

we find our Mystery House.

0:28:360:28:38

-What do you think?

-It's very pretty!

0:28:390:28:42

-Loads of character.

-There is a lot to take in in this community,

0:28:420:28:46

which was built for the local vicar in 1864, this lovely private estate.

0:28:460:28:52

Then in the '50s, it was converted into the houses

0:28:520:28:54

that you see at the moment.

0:28:540:28:55

But each one had a previous life as the granary,

0:28:550:28:57

the engineer's shop. It was kind of a model farm

0:28:570:29:00

and this was actually the apple store.

0:29:000:29:02

-Looking good from outside?

-Yeah, I can't wait to get in.

0:29:020:29:04

It looks stunning inside.

0:29:040:29:06

I cannot wait to show you.

0:29:060:29:07

-Shall we get in there straightaway?

-Lovely.

0:29:070:29:10

Our characterful semidetached stone Mystery House is Grade II listed.

0:29:110:29:16

It's elicited some great reactions from Debbie and Ash,

0:29:160:29:19

but it is our mystery property, so there's still a surprise to come.

0:29:190:29:23

In you come, ladies.

0:29:230:29:25

We come straight into what would be your living space.

0:29:260:29:30

It's lovely in here.

0:29:300:29:32

It's smaller than what we've seen, but it's got such a lovely feel.

0:29:320:29:36

Off this beautiful space, Debbie, is a workroom.

0:29:360:29:40

It's the most beautiful light and airy space

0:29:400:29:42

and I can just imagine you sitting there with your sewing machine,

0:29:420:29:46

-quilting away.

-Oh!

0:29:460:29:49

Ash, you're smiling as well.

0:29:490:29:50

I am, because it's just so Deb, really.

0:29:500:29:53

It is smaller than we've seen, but I like the cosiness of it,

0:29:530:29:57

I love the decor. I can see Deb's furnishings in here.

0:29:570:30:02

Well, I have a bigger room to show you and it's the one that I think

0:30:020:30:04

if I was living here, and I can imagine you and your group of

0:30:040:30:07

friends spending most of your time in,

0:30:070:30:10

and that is the most fabulous kitchen...

0:30:100:30:13

-Oh!

-..which is just next-door. Come this way.

0:30:130:30:15

Oh, my word!

0:30:250:30:27

Do I need my tissues?

0:30:280:30:30

I do need my tissues!

0:30:300:30:31

I know you wanted a kitchen-diner that was going to be

0:30:350:30:37

the heart of your home.

0:30:370:30:39

It's taken my breath away.

0:30:400:30:42

I can't speak!

0:30:430:30:45

It's so...

0:30:490:30:50

..yummy.

0:30:530:30:54

Yummy's a good word!

0:30:550:30:57

I can hear lots of laughter in this room.

0:30:580:31:00

I can, yeah. I didn't think you would top the first house at all.

0:31:000:31:06

I agree.

0:31:060:31:07

Moving upstairs, all the rooms are situated off a long, bright landing.

0:31:090:31:13

There's a family bathroom with skylight

0:31:130:31:16

and three bedrooms in the eaves.

0:31:160:31:18

The smallest is at the back.

0:31:180:31:20

There's a double at the front benefiting from two windows

0:31:200:31:24

and I'm taking Debbie and Ash to the master

0:31:240:31:27

with its own en suite shower room.

0:31:270:31:29

Oh, it's so pretty!

0:31:310:31:34

-And light.

-Yeah.

0:31:340:31:36

So light. Are you feeling at home here?

0:31:360:31:38

Yeah, I am.

0:31:380:31:40

Do you know, this house is a very girlie house.

0:31:400:31:44

It's a warm house, isn't it?

0:31:440:31:46

It's warm and light.

0:31:460:31:48

Sitting out the front with loads of pots and things,

0:31:480:31:50

it's more than enough for me.

0:31:500:31:52

I just want somewhere to sit.

0:31:520:31:53

Well, I'm glad that's enough

0:31:530:31:55

because it doesn't come with a back garden on this particular property,

0:31:550:31:58

but it does come with a bit of a secret garden.

0:31:580:32:02

Oh!

0:32:020:32:04

After practically receiving a standing ovation

0:32:050:32:08

for the inside of this gorgeous cottage,

0:32:080:32:11

I can finally reveal the reason why it's the Mystery House.

0:32:110:32:14

We're passing through the pretty walled cottage garden at

0:32:140:32:19

the front and heading just down the lane, passed the property's garage,

0:32:190:32:23

ideal for the camper van, to this, a hidden gem.

0:32:230:32:28

A lawned garden with mature trees,

0:32:280:32:31

a vegetable patch, greenhouse, shed and pond.

0:32:310:32:36

Not to mention the views.

0:32:450:32:47

So, here we are, Debbie.

0:32:500:32:52

Your secret garden,

0:32:520:32:53

your extra room with a view of the gorgeous Blackdown Hills.

0:32:530:32:57

Speechless again.

0:33:010:33:02

The kids would love this.

0:33:030:33:05

It's just absolutely stunning.

0:33:050:33:08

To have that view and for it to be separate

0:33:080:33:11

to the house is really nice, actually.

0:33:110:33:13

What do you think our Mystery House is on the market for?

0:33:150:33:17

I think it's over my budget.

0:33:190:33:21

I think it's...

0:33:210:33:23

I really don't want it to be, but I think it is 350, 360.

0:33:230:33:27

Let's go 350.

0:33:270:33:29

£350,000.

0:33:290:33:30

I've got to go 360.

0:33:310:33:33

This property is on the market for...

0:33:330:33:35

..£319,950.

0:33:370:33:41

Oh!

0:33:420:33:43

Oh, my word!

0:33:460:33:47

Where's my cheque book?

0:33:500:33:51

OK, she's packed!

0:33:530:33:55

Oh, I can't believe that.

0:33:550:33:56

Why don't you, with that in mind,

0:33:580:33:59

go and have another explore of the house

0:33:590:34:01

and then we've got so much to catch up on later.

0:34:010:34:03

Thank you.

0:34:030:34:05

All right?

0:34:090:34:10

Let's go.

0:34:170:34:18

Our historic Mystery House has happily rung in in more than £20,000

0:34:210:34:26

under budget. It comes with both character and a great entertaining

0:34:260:34:30

kitchen and living space.

0:34:300:34:32

There are three bedrooms and a beautiful secret garden

0:34:320:34:36

with stunning views. What's more, it's close to a community.

0:34:360:34:40

-Wow!

-Oh, my word!

0:34:410:34:44

BOTH: Sewing room.

0:34:450:34:47

The light's amazing.

0:34:470:34:48

Love it. I love it.

0:34:480:34:50

So beautiful.

0:34:500:34:53

The Mystery House is an absolute box of magic and wonderfulness!

0:34:530:35:00

Every bit about it makes me feel really emotional

0:35:020:35:08

and really happy

0:35:080:35:10

and really warm.

0:35:100:35:11

I think it's divine.

0:35:130:35:15

This one is divine.

0:35:150:35:16

Hi!

0:35:180:35:19

Is the house still giving you that magical feeling, that hug?

0:35:220:35:24

It's all right!

0:35:250:35:26

-We've got so much to talk about, haven't we?

-We have, yeah.

0:35:290:35:31

Let's find somewhere to do that.

0:35:310:35:33

There's many an adventure to be had on the stunning Jurassic Coast

0:35:440:35:48

and I'm always up for an escapade,

0:35:480:35:50

so I've come to beautiful Hive Beach in West Dorset to meet coastal

0:35:500:35:54

survival expert Fraser Christian.

0:35:540:35:57

He's been teaching people how to live outdoors for ten years,

0:35:570:36:01

building shelters, fires and foraging.

0:36:010:36:04

Today, he's going to show me how to forage for seasonal ingredients

0:36:040:36:08

before putting them to good use.

0:36:080:36:10

So, if I was stranded here on the Jurassic Coastline,

0:36:100:36:14

how do we go about finding food?

0:36:140:36:16

In nature, obviously, we've got a lot of plants in autumn,

0:36:160:36:19

that's when they produce their seeds.

0:36:190:36:21

By the winter, those seeds have fallen down into the ground

0:36:210:36:24

and because we're on the coast where it's a lot warmer,

0:36:240:36:27

the sea works a little bit like a radiator and now

0:36:270:36:29

they're just waiting for those first signs of spring to start shooting up

0:36:290:36:32

out of the ground, so we'll find some young, hopefully,

0:36:320:36:34

early young fresh growth.

0:36:340:36:35

And all of our native vegetables such as carrots, parsnips,

0:36:350:36:39

your spinach, all your brassicas, your alliums like your onions and your garlic,

0:36:390:36:42

they all first came from the coast because inland used to be a forest,

0:36:420:36:46

but most of the food is in this open area where the sunlight

0:36:460:36:49

can reach it and so all the gourmet vegetables,

0:36:490:36:52

we will find on the coast.

0:36:520:36:53

To prove it, Fraser's taking me up above

0:36:550:36:57

this impressive stretch of beach in search of lunch.

0:36:570:37:01

To me, though, it looks like a huge expanse of green.

0:37:010:37:05

Straight away, I can see about half a dozen really good edible plants.

0:37:050:37:10

What are you picking out? What can you see?

0:37:100:37:12

I'm looking for the most energy, the brightest and most vibrant,

0:37:120:37:14

and there's loads of spinach, or what we call sea beet,

0:37:140:37:18

all around us. There's also carrots and some mallow.

0:37:180:37:21

Let's go for some gourmet greens and head up there and pick that spinach.

0:37:210:37:24

-So that's lunch today?

-That's lunch.

-OK!

0:37:240:37:26

Evidence from fossils found in the region proves that plants have been

0:37:270:37:31

growing here for millions of years

0:37:310:37:33

and I'm looking forward to sampling the wild harvest.

0:37:330:37:37

Here we go. Here's a lovely patch of wild spinach.

0:37:370:37:40

What's the most important rule when you're foraging?

0:37:400:37:43

What is rule number one?

0:37:430:37:44

Rule number one is,

0:37:440:37:45

we definitely don't want to misidentify and poison ourselves.

0:37:450:37:49

There's not lots of poisonous plants out there,

0:37:490:37:51

but the ones that you will find,

0:37:510:37:53

some of them are fatal and can kill you.

0:37:530:37:55

If I get that and say to you,

0:37:550:37:57

I'll eat that, you're going to be confident to eat that.

0:37:570:38:00

-Lunch, yeah?

-Good.

0:38:060:38:07

-Good.

-You need to get out with people like myself,

0:38:070:38:09

there's lots of other people around the country now doing it,

0:38:090:38:12

and really get shown first-hand.

0:38:120:38:14

After falling in love with cooking in the woods as a Boy Scout,

0:38:140:38:17

Fraser started his working life as a professionally trained chef

0:38:170:38:21

before turning his hand to survival skills and getting back to nature.

0:38:210:38:26

Today, he's combining his talents and here's lunch.

0:38:260:38:29

Now, this really is what you call alfresco dining.

0:38:290:38:33

Fraser, this looks great.

0:38:330:38:35

Picked a bit of wild garlic on the way this morning as well,

0:38:350:38:37

so shall we get cooking?

0:38:370:38:39

Let's get cooking! Show me what we need to do.

0:38:390:38:41

On the wild food menu today is vegetable risotto.

0:38:410:38:45

You were talking about identification and the various rules and stuff.

0:38:450:38:48

Well, one of our best senses that we can trust 100%

0:38:480:38:51

is the sense of smell.

0:38:510:38:52

So a really good way to be able to remember stuff.

0:38:520:38:54

So if you just give the wild garlic a little squeeze and a crush,

0:38:540:38:57

-close your eyes...

-Oh, wow!

0:38:570:38:58

-So, straightaway...

-That's delicious.

0:38:580:39:00

So, even if you came across two leaves that looked like that again,

0:39:000:39:03

and you picked one up and it didn't smell of wild garlic,

0:39:030:39:06

you'll never forget that smell, will you?

0:39:060:39:08

Wild garlic grows in woodland during the spring and is a relative of

0:39:090:39:13

the chive. Today, Fraser's using it for extra flavour instead of onion.

0:39:130:39:17

So, we're just going to quickly chop this up.

0:39:170:39:19

-Oh, wow.

-Can you smell it already coming through?

0:39:190:39:22

The garlic's just gorgeous, yes.

0:39:220:39:23

Next, chilli and olive oil are added and heated before the rice goes in

0:39:230:39:28

with a glass of local wine.

0:39:280:39:30

And now, for our rich pickings.

0:39:300:39:32

I'll chuck the spinach in. If I give you that bowl,

0:39:320:39:34

-would you like to pick a few of the gorse flowers for the garnish at the end?

-Yeah, sure.

0:39:340:39:39

That smells so good.

0:39:410:39:42

Right, I reckon that's just about ready.

0:39:430:39:45

OK, I'm excited for lunch.

0:39:450:39:47

My freshly picked gorse flowers add flavour, colour

0:39:470:39:50

and are a source of protein.

0:39:500:39:53

Thank you.

0:39:530:39:54

OK, here we go.

0:39:550:39:57

That is gorgeous.

0:40:010:40:02

You don't have to be that special a chef when you're working with the

0:40:020:40:05

finest ingredients in the world.

0:40:050:40:06

Fraser, I think if I was ever stranded on the Jurassic Coast here,

0:40:060:40:10

now I might just make it, I might just survive!

0:40:100:40:13

Well, we always say, we don't just survive, we thrive on the coast.

0:40:130:40:16

Well, we're thriving today.

0:40:160:40:18

-Cheers!

-Cheers!

0:40:180:40:19

Well, I've taken Debs to three stunning counties

0:40:260:40:29

to see three amazing properties.

0:40:290:40:31

Two very strong contenders

0:40:310:40:33

and I have a feeling there's one outright winner,

0:40:330:40:35

but what's going to happen next?

0:40:350:40:37

Debbie, how are you feeling?

0:40:460:40:48

Very excited.

0:40:500:40:52

When I walked into the Mystery House,

0:40:520:40:54

it literally took my breath away.

0:40:540:40:57

I wouldn't have looked at that house, but, oh, my gosh.

0:40:570:40:59

It was just stunning.

0:41:010:41:02

But best of all, it felt so secure for Sam.

0:41:020:41:07

That peace and that quiet and that safety for her,

0:41:070:41:11

it was just unbelievable.

0:41:110:41:12

And Ash, I know Debbie's talked about being an independent woman and

0:41:130:41:16

you said she's a strong woman, she's so capable,

0:41:160:41:19

but you have also said she's a really sociable person.

0:41:190:41:22

She is, yes.

0:41:220:41:23

She is a social person and as a friend, for peace of mind,

0:41:230:41:26

I'm sort of glad that the property she prefers is the one that's got

0:41:260:41:29

the community. They would gain someone special.

0:41:290:41:33

-Aw!

-Sorry!

0:41:330:41:34

Are they going to be gaining someone special?

0:41:360:41:38

Debbie, what's going to happen?

0:41:380:41:40

What are you going to do with this Mystery House?

0:41:400:41:42

I'm definitely going to go back with some members of my family.

0:41:420:41:46

I know that if they think I'm happy, then they're going to be happy.

0:41:460:41:51

I don't think it will be possible to find anything

0:41:510:41:54

more perfect than that,

0:41:540:41:55

so I'm going to be making a call very soon to the estate agents.

0:41:550:42:00

I think I would be pretty devastated if someone swooped in behind me and

0:42:000:42:04

-took it away.

-Well, it's been a joy to view these properties with you.

0:42:040:42:08

-Thank you so much.

-I look forward to visiting very soon.

0:42:080:42:11

OK!

0:42:110:42:12

Well, when it comes to escaping to the country,

0:42:180:42:20

it really doesn't get much better than the last couple of days.

0:42:200:42:23

We showed Debbie and her best friend Ash three stunning properties,

0:42:230:42:27

two of which they loved so much it brought them to tears.

0:42:270:42:30

And although we didn't have the weather yesterday, today,

0:42:300:42:33

the sun is shining on the West Country

0:42:330:42:36

and I really hope it continues to shine on Debbie

0:42:360:42:39

in that fabulous Mystery House.

0:42:390:42:41

I'll see you next time on Escape To The Country.

0:42:410:42:43

I'm thrilled to say that Debbie has had her offer accepted

0:42:470:42:50

on the Mystery House and she should be moving in very soon.

0:42:500:42:54

We wish her all the best in her new home.
