This water is famous throughout the world.

0:00:020:00:04

The Queen drinks it and people travel for hundreds of miles just to collect it.

0:00:040:00:08

Below these rocks is the source of Britain's oldest bottled water.

0:00:080:00:12

It dates back to about 1622.

0:00:120:00:15

So where am I? Well, keep watching to find out.

0:00:150:00:18

'In today's show, I'll be helping a mother and son make a fresh start and find a new home in the country.

0:00:310:00:37

'But downsizing isn't easy.'

0:00:370:00:39

I can see that to downsize I'm really going to have to change my whole opinion.

0:00:390:00:44

'I'll be taking them on a grand tour of some hot properties and we might just hit the nail on the head.'

0:00:440:00:49

-I like it, it looks lovely.

-Good.

-It looks very me.

0:00:490:00:53

And there's a mystery house - our little twist of their criteria that might tip the balance.

0:00:530:00:58

Well, I'm in Worcestershire, and these are the Malvern Hills, where this water comes from.

0:01:020:01:07

It first became famous back in Victorian times for its supposedly magical healing powers.

0:01:070:01:13

Although today it is no longer known as a miracle cure,

0:01:130:01:16

I've heard the water is still deliciously refreshing.

0:01:160:01:19

Oh, it's lovely.

0:01:200:01:22

Worcestershire lies in the heart of England, sitting between the mellow Cotswolds and the Welsh marshes,

0:01:230:01:30

boasting a variety of luscious landscapes from open countryside with fruit orchards

0:01:300:01:34

to the ancient Malvern Hills.

0:01:340:01:36

There are great country walks and breath-taking views.

0:01:360:01:40

In between, there are picturesque villages and the cathedral city of Worcester.

0:01:400:01:46

To the north of the city lies Severn Valley and the Severn Valley railway -

0:01:460:01:50

an ideal journey to take in all the county's stunning sights.

0:01:500:01:54

Canals used to be the lifeblood of this nation

0:02:000:02:02

and they connected Worcestershire with England's industrial heartland.

0:02:020:02:06

Thankfully, today these waterways are a lot quieter,

0:02:060:02:09

but that said, the average price of a detached house is still £294,000.

0:02:090:02:14

That's 7% higher than the national average.

0:02:140:02:17

Let's hope today's buyers

0:02:170:02:19

are prepared to be a bit realistic about what they can get for their money.

0:02:190:02:22

Today's house hunters are Isobella and her son David,

0:02:220:02:26

who live in a six-bedroom property just outside Norwich.

0:02:260:02:30

And it's not just the two of them at home. It's a busy household, with two dogs...

0:02:300:02:36

two cats, five geese,

0:02:360:02:40

50 budgies, Madonna the parrot and Ethel the ostrich.

0:02:400:02:46

Tragically, six months ago, Isobella lost her husband Max, and after much soul-searching

0:02:460:02:51

she decided to sell his amusement arcade business and take the incredibly brave step

0:02:510:02:56

of selling the home and moving closer to her friends in Birmingham.

0:02:560:02:59

She's also hoping that when the time is right,

0:03:010:03:04

she can set up her own craft centre in the grounds of her new home.

0:03:040:03:08

There's no reason for us to stay here any more. The business is sold up.

0:03:080:03:12

We don't have many friends, family or anything here in Norfolk.

0:03:120:03:17

And we want to move to the country,

0:03:170:03:20

so I can establish the animals again and get a business going.

0:03:200:03:25

And for you, it'll just be...

0:03:250:03:28

Well, you have to come with me, really!

0:03:280:03:31

Isobella and her late husband bought the house two years ago.

0:03:330:03:37

They lovingly decorated it and it really has been a happy family home.

0:03:370:03:41

The real bonus has been that I've had my own living space, which has been nice.

0:03:410:03:46

And for me, I've always loved the character of the house,

0:03:460:03:50

the very big rooms.

0:03:500:03:51

I've got a lot of furniture and it accommodates all the furniture, and most of all, the gardens.

0:03:510:03:58

Isobella and David have enjoyed the luxury of space,

0:03:580:04:01

but with many of the rooms not being used, they are now looking to downsize.

0:04:010:04:05

I'd like the house smaller so it's easier for me to manage,

0:04:050:04:10

as there'll only be me living there, and basically just David until he moves.

0:04:100:04:16

Nevertheless, there is still a wish list we need to take on board.

0:04:160:04:19

It's important for me to have a large kitchen/diner in the next property.

0:04:190:04:24

Hopefully there will be enough space to put an Aga in, if there isn't one already in there.

0:04:240:04:30

We've currently got a study in this house,

0:04:300:04:32

which I personally use for gaming and surfing the net.

0:04:320:04:36

So it's important that we have another room in the next house that I can use for the same purpose,

0:04:360:04:41

as that's where I spend most of my time.

0:04:410:04:44

There are important considerations for the outdoor space, too.

0:04:440:04:48

In my next property I desperately will need

0:04:480:04:51

at least two or three acres.

0:04:510:04:53

You naughty girl.

0:04:550:04:57

And there's one final request...

0:04:570:05:00

My property at the moment is on a very busy road.

0:05:000:05:04

It's difficult to get out in the mornings.

0:05:040:05:06

So it would be lovely to find a property in a quiet lane, just outside a village.

0:05:060:05:13

So to sum up, what sort of property would fit the bill?

0:05:130:05:17

We're looking for three bedrooms, a large kitchen/diner.

0:05:180:05:22

And hopefully some outbuildings

0:05:220:05:26

and an area of well-established garden that I can use for just sitting out, chilling on.

0:05:260:05:33

Before we can start looking for their new home, we've invited round a local estate agent

0:05:330:05:39

to give a valuation for their current property

0:05:390:05:42

which Isobella bought with her late husband for £665,000 just two years ago.

0:05:420:05:48

This is a quality, Grade II listed Georgian house in a good location, close to Norwich.

0:05:480:05:53

I would set a guide price of £695,000.

0:05:530:05:57

There's no money actually being made.

0:06:000:06:02

So I am pretty disappointed with the valuation. But I'm realistic.

0:06:020:06:09

So given that, how much is in the pot for the new house?

0:06:090:06:13

Well, my next property will definitely be smaller, so my maximum budget will be £600,000.

0:06:130:06:20

Isobella and David are looking to downsize,

0:06:240:06:27

but moving from a substantial Grade II listed Georgian house

0:06:270:06:30

still means they are looking for a few acres, period features and a large kitchen/diner.

0:06:300:06:36

Isobella and David want to be close to family and friends in Birmingham,

0:06:380:06:42

but still enjoy a peaceful rural setting,

0:06:420:06:44

so we'll be focusing our search around the city of Worcester.

0:06:440:06:48

It is, however, a more expensive area than where they currently live in Norfolk.

0:06:480:06:53

Isobella might want to downsize in terms of space, but let's hope she remembers that a smaller property

0:06:530:06:58

doesn't mean a smaller price tag in Worcestershire.

0:06:580:07:01

I'll be taking them to see a selection of fantastic properties

0:07:030:07:06

that I hope will appeal to them both.

0:07:060:07:08

But I'll leave them in the dark regarding the prices until after the viewings.

0:07:080:07:12

The last of the houses will be the mystery house, which always has the potential to be a real winner.

0:07:120:07:17

Let's keep our fingers crossed for their property search.

0:07:200:07:23

If you're thinking of moving to Worcestershire,

0:07:230:07:26

there are loads of lovely properties for a range of budgets. Take a look at these.

0:07:260:07:30

At the pricey end of the market, £1,750,000

0:07:300:07:35

will buy this Grade I listed Georgian residence in Clent,

0:07:350:07:39

complete with a cottage and barn.

0:07:390:07:42

It has large reception rooms, and sits on a fantastic nine-acre plot.

0:07:420:07:47

Or £850,000 will buy this secluded Grade II listed farmhouse,

0:07:470:07:53

with converted barns near Ombersley.

0:07:530:07:55

It boasts a wealth of exposed timber,

0:07:550:07:58

a lovely country-style bathroom,

0:07:580:08:00

and a living room with a cosy inglenook fireplace.

0:08:000:08:03

And finally, for £337,500,

0:08:030:08:07

you could feel like the Lord or Lady of your own manor

0:08:070:08:10

in a two-storey apartment wing within this prestigious manor house.

0:08:100:08:15

Located in Lower Broadheath, it's part of a beautiful nature setting,

0:08:150:08:19

and has its own private entrance and gardens.

0:08:190:08:22

Isobella, David, welcome to Worcestershire.

0:08:230:08:25

What are you looking forward to about the move?

0:08:250:08:28

I'm looking forward to being back to my roots, back to where I know.

0:08:280:08:32

I feel safe, comfortable here and I know where I'm going.

0:08:320:08:35

We have got mother and son.

0:08:350:08:37

Who's gonna be making the big decisions on this search?

0:08:370:08:40

Mum.

0:08:400:08:42

-He conceded easily!

-Absolutely!

0:08:420:08:44

-"Oh, Mum - she'll be paying for it."

-Yes.

0:08:440:08:48

We have got a good, healthy budget.

0:08:480:08:50

Up to £600,000.

0:08:500:08:52

So we should be able to find you something stunning.

0:08:520:08:55

And we have got lots of lovely properties to show you, including the mystery house.

0:08:550:08:59

-Lovely.

-So bit of a surprise there. Are you ready?

0:08:590:09:02

I don't think we should waste any more time, we've got a lot to do. Let's get going.

0:09:020:09:06

So Isobella has a budget of up to £600,000...

0:09:080:09:11

The outbuildings need to be suitable for starting a craft centre.

0:09:240:09:29

It's going to be a difficult journey for Isobella.

0:09:290:09:31

I just hope we can do everything we can to find her and David a new home

0:09:310:09:35

they will be happy in for a long time.

0:09:350:09:37

What is it you're most looking forward to,

0:09:370:09:40

the two of you, about going back into the countryside of Worcestershire?

0:09:400:09:44

I've always loved this area.

0:09:440:09:46

It's peaceful, it's...interesting.

0:09:460:09:51

You get into the country and there's lovely little country pubs, things like that.

0:09:510:09:55

It is just idyllic for me.

0:09:550:09:58

Well, let's hope we can find Isobella just what she's looking for.

0:09:580:10:03

Our first property is in Wichenford,

0:10:070:10:09

a 20-minute drive north-west of Worcester.

0:10:090:10:12

It's a small village with few amenities.

0:10:120:10:14

But just a couple of miles down the road is the larger village of Martley,

0:10:140:10:18

which has the essentials and is the place to mix with the locals.

0:10:180:10:21

One of the best selling points of the house we've lined up

0:10:210:10:25

is its position, sitting amongst a cluster of properties

0:10:250:10:28

just outside the village.

0:10:280:10:30

-I think this is a fairly rural setting, isn't it?

-Absolutely.

0:10:300:10:34

And you can't work out which house I'm going to show you. Come this way. Come here,

0:10:340:10:39

-this is it.

-Oh, right.

-Mmm.

0:10:390:10:42

It looks like a bungalow to me.

0:10:420:10:44

It does a little bit. It's actually a barn conversion.

0:10:440:10:48

-Right.

-Victorian barn conversion, so it's about 120 years old,

0:10:480:10:51

but the conversion was done in 2001.

0:10:510:10:53

Actually, in appearance, it looks very nice,

0:10:530:10:56

-and it looks in really good condition.

-Yeah.

0:10:560:10:59

But it's just me and bungalows. I don't like...

0:10:590:11:03

-living on one floor.

-I'll put you out of your misery. Look up there.

0:11:030:11:06

-There are some rooms upstairs.

-Oh, right.

-So with that in mind,

0:11:060:11:11

let's head inside and see what you think.

0:11:110:11:14

Well, it's not the best start, but Isobella shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

0:11:140:11:19

This place is gorgeous inside.

0:11:190:11:21

Come on through.

0:11:210:11:25

And this is the hallway.

0:11:250:11:27

It's a fairly modern conversion, so what are your first impressions?

0:11:270:11:31

I'm very traditional and to walk in

0:11:310:11:35

-and immediately see the kitchen feels very strange to me.

-Ah!

0:11:350:11:39

-That's what's throwing you.

-Yes.

0:11:390:11:42

This was a barn. It would have been closed at the ends,

0:11:420:11:45

and open at the sides, and they have kept that feeling.

0:11:450:11:48

They have kept that all the way through and kept the kitchen there.

0:11:480:11:51

We'll come back to that kitchen. Let me show you through here first of all.

0:11:510:11:56

-Oh, this is lovely.

-I've got something that I think you might quite like.

0:11:560:12:01

Oh, fabulous.

0:12:010:12:02

A wood-burner.

0:12:020:12:05

I love the big windows and the view is absolutely fantastic.

0:12:050:12:10

-Isn't it just?

-You would have to go a long way to beat this.

0:12:100:12:13

I could have Ethel just directly outside,

0:12:130:12:16

and she could watch the television with us.

0:12:160:12:19

Ostriches are very, very nosy birds,

0:12:190:12:21

and she would just stand there all day, watching you.

0:12:210:12:25

Have a look up there.

0:12:250:12:29

Kind of a little library/study area at the moment.

0:12:290:12:32

-It would do me ideally.

-Fantastic.

0:12:320:12:35

You mentioned it felt very modern, you'd prefer something more traditional.

0:12:350:12:39

How do you feel in this room?

0:12:390:12:41

I do really like the room. It worries me because this is modern, it feels modern.

0:12:410:12:46

My furniture is very traditional, and I just worry that the two will not mix.

0:12:460:12:54

'Well, there's plenty more to see.

0:12:540:12:58

'Next for us is the kitchen

0:12:580:13:00

'and it does deliver an item on her wish list.'

0:13:000:13:03

-Uh-huh.

-Uh-huh!

0:13:030:13:05

Yes!

0:13:050:13:07

I thought this might grab you.

0:13:070:13:09

-We've a range-style cooker, and you have one at home, don't you?

-Absolutely.

0:13:090:13:13

I wouldn't be without one.

0:13:130:13:14

-You can see, although it's modern, they have tried to bring in some nice country-style features.

-Yeah.

0:13:140:13:20

They've also got the butler sink,

0:13:200:13:23

-the beach worktops, and they've got some granite work surfaces as well.

-That's right.

0:13:230:13:27

This is very much to my taste.

0:13:270:13:30

It's just a little too small for me.

0:13:300:13:32

'Well, at least she won't have far to walk to the dining area,

0:13:320:13:35

'with its beautiful views over the garden.

0:13:350:13:38

'But will it do the trick for Isobella?'

0:13:380:13:41

I would prefer the kitchen to be in here,

0:13:410:13:45

and the sitting area to be there.

0:13:450:13:47

Because, when I'm at the sink, I do like to look out of the window.

0:13:470:13:50

What about you? Do you prefer something more modern?

0:13:500:13:53

Erm...yeah, I think I prefer a bit of a modern twist to it, yeah.

0:13:530:13:58

I can feel a bit of tension coming here.

0:13:580:14:00

We'll have to find something in-between for you both or see who wins the day.

0:14:000:14:04

Traditional versus modern.

0:14:040:14:06

But right now, I have something just for you that I want to show you. Follow me.

0:14:060:14:10

'One of the four bedrooms in this house is just off the dining room,

0:14:100:14:14

'and has its own en-suite.

0:14:140:14:16

'But I'm thinking the room would be the perfect study area for David.'

0:14:160:14:20

This is really what I want to show you.

0:14:200:14:22

Yeah. It's quite...

0:14:220:14:24

bright in here with the large windows again.

0:14:240:14:27

-Is it the perfect size?

-Yeah.

0:14:270:14:29

-That's good.

-Good size.

0:14:290:14:31

All right, let's head out and up the stairs.

0:14:310:14:33

'Great, David's happy!

0:14:330:14:34

'Also on this floor are two more double bedrooms.

0:14:340:14:37

'They aren't enormous, but they do have en-suites, which are a real bonus.

0:14:370:14:42

'But going upstairs, it's now time for Mum.'

0:14:420:14:45

Now, Isobella, I know you wanted an upstairs room.

0:14:490:14:52

You were a bit worried about it being a bungalow.

0:14:520:14:56

-Well, this is the master bedroom, which is upstairs.

-Right.

0:14:560:15:00

What are your thoughts? Oooh.

0:15:000:15:03

I was hoping for it to be a little bit bigger as the master bedroom.

0:15:030:15:07

And I prefer proper windows that you can actually...

0:15:070:15:14

wake up, sit up in bed and look straight out of.

0:15:140:15:17

'Isobella certainly knows what she likes and, er...

0:15:170:15:20

'doesn't like, but at least I'm learning all the time.

0:15:200:15:23

'Just like the other bedrooms,

0:15:230:15:25

'this one also has an en-suite, but this time with the luxury of a separate shower.

0:15:250:15:30

'Well, that rounds off the inside.

0:15:300:15:33

'Time now to have a look at the outdoor space.'

0:15:330:15:36

So, this is the outside land.

0:15:380:15:42

-Right.

-We've got three-quarters of an acre...

-Uh-huh.

0:15:420:15:45

-..pretty sizeable.

-COCKEREL CROWS

0:15:450:15:47

You can keep live animals out here, and, as you can hear,

0:15:470:15:50

-next door, they've got chickens and a rooster.

-So I've just heard!

0:15:500:15:54

That's wonderful. I can certainly put my chicken hut there and they can talk to each other.

0:15:540:16:00

The plot might not be massive, but luckily,

0:16:000:16:03

the neighbouring farm has 100 acres of land just over the fence,

0:16:030:16:07

so renting a chunk for her animals is certainly worth looking into.

0:16:070:16:10

At the front of the house, there's also a large garage,

0:16:100:16:14

which Isobella could always convert, and even extend,

0:16:140:16:16

to house her much-desired crafts centre.

0:16:160:16:19

But now, it's time to talk figures.

0:16:190:16:21

So the question is, how much do you think it's worth?

0:16:210:16:24

I'm going to start with you Isobella.

0:16:240:16:26

I would imagine...

0:16:260:16:28

-£475,000.

-475.

0:16:280:16:31

Er...I was thinking maybe a little bit less, £450,000 maybe.

0:16:310:16:38

£450,000. OK. I think you need to be prepared for this then.

0:16:380:16:43

It's actually on the market for £565,000 pounds.

0:16:430:16:47

Good lord.

0:16:470:16:48

The location is beautiful, you can't beat the views. It's perfect.

0:16:480:16:54

-I think we've surprised you a little bit here, haven't we?

-You have.

0:16:540:16:58

Well, at this moment, I'm going to send you both back inside

0:16:580:17:01

have another look around, and I will catch up with you later.

0:17:010:17:04

At £565,000, this converted barn is comfortably under-budget.

0:17:040:17:12

The price was a shock to them both.

0:17:260:17:28

They will have to be realistic about prices of property in this part of the country.

0:17:280:17:32

I was very, very impressed with the living room.

0:17:320:17:35

-I love these windows in this room, don't you?

-Yeah.

0:17:350:17:39

And the view...I mean, that is... You've got to go a long way to find that.

0:17:390:17:43

However, my furniture, being old and traditional,

0:17:430:17:46

and the feel of the room is very modern with exposed beams and brickwork and everything,

0:17:460:17:53

I know the two will not mix.

0:17:530:17:56

My mum prefers more traditional...

0:17:560:17:58

character properties. I don't mind those,

0:17:580:18:02

but I like to have the modern twist to it as well.

0:18:020:18:05

-OK, you two. Had a good look round?

-Yes, great.

-Fantastic.

0:18:050:18:10

Well, we've got a lot more to do, so let's get going.

0:18:100:18:13

Isobella and David's move back to the West Midlands

0:18:190:18:23

will bring them home to roost. Worcester is the nearest large town,

0:18:230:18:26

so they are having a wander to soak up what's on offer.

0:18:260:18:29

-Very similar to Norwich.

-It is, actually.

0:18:290:18:32

-There's lots to do. I don't know what the nightlife's like.

-Hmm.

0:18:320:18:37

Flowing through its heart is the River Severn -

0:18:370:18:40

the longest river in Britain.

0:18:400:18:42

It's lovely this walk by the river.

0:18:420:18:44

-If it was a nice sunny day...

-Yeah, could take the dogs for a walk down here.

0:18:440:18:49

That's right. Nice and safe.

0:18:490:18:51

Rising majestically from the banks of the river

0:18:510:18:54

stands Worcester cathedral.

0:18:540:18:55

Founded in 680 AD, the present building has had many renovations,

0:18:550:19:01

and today visitors can admire the masonry and stained glass.

0:19:010:19:04

Look at those windows.

0:19:040:19:07

The colour and detail is amazing.

0:19:070:19:10

Worcester most famous son is Romantic composer Edward Elgar.

0:19:100:19:15

Born in 1857, he was famous for such works as Land Of Hope And Glory.

0:19:150:19:19

On his death in 1934, his daughter established a museum

0:19:190:19:23

in the cottage in which he was born,

0:19:230:19:25

three miles from Worcester.

0:19:250:19:28

Oh, this is actually made by Elgar Brothers.

0:19:280:19:31

It's beautiful.

0:19:310:19:34

The cottage houses an incredible collection of his scores, mementoes, and photographs,

0:19:340:19:38

which are enjoyed by visitors from all over the world.

0:19:380:19:43

Our next house is in the hamlet of Boreley, just nine miles north of Worcester.

0:19:520:19:57

Nearby Ombersley is a picturesque village with a real mix

0:19:570:20:01

of housing stock, including many beautiful timber-framed properties.

0:20:010:20:05

For convenience there are a few shops, a restaurant and a pub, but that's about it.

0:20:050:20:11

Isobella wants a period property, and a cottage is something she would certainly like to have a look at.

0:20:110:20:16

I'm really excited to show her and David this next offering

0:20:160:20:20

which sits in gorgeous woodland with views out over meadows.

0:20:200:20:24

So it's gone a bit windy now, hasn't it? But I'm here with you to show you this property right here.

0:20:240:20:32

About 200 to 300 years' old, they think.

0:20:320:20:35

A nice period property. What are your first thoughts?

0:20:350:20:38

The cottage-look of the house is what I do like.

0:20:380:20:43

It's looking very promising from the outside.

0:20:430:20:46

'Excellent.

0:20:460:20:47

'That's what I like to hear - a good, positive start.'

0:20:470:20:51

Right, in we come, out of the wind and into...

0:20:510:20:55

-I think it's a nice warm, snug, cosy country kitchen.

-It's lovely and warm.

0:20:550:21:02

I love the Aga. I love the floor.

0:21:020:21:05

I love wooden beams.

0:21:050:21:07

I like the exposed brick and everything.

0:21:070:21:11

I like features like that.

0:21:110:21:12

I don't like the height of the ceilings.

0:21:120:21:17

And I can already see that I'm going to have to duck to come through the doors.

0:21:180:21:23

Space-wise, though, is that workable?

0:21:230:21:25

For me, the kitchen is not big enough to be a kitchen/diner.

0:21:250:21:29

-We need to find you some more dining space, then?

-Yes.

0:21:290:21:31

Luckily we've got some through this door. Follow me.

0:21:310:21:35

So minding your head,

0:21:360:21:39

this is the dining space at the moment.

0:21:390:21:43

Once again, the room is too small.

0:21:430:21:46

In reality, I can see that to downsize, I'm really going to have to change something

0:21:460:21:53

or change my whole opinion about actually moving to a cottage or something.

0:21:530:21:59

I'm eager to see the rest of the house and maybe I can possibly compromise,

0:21:590:22:04

once I sit down and think about it.

0:22:040:22:08

And you get over the initial shock of how things might change. But there are lots of positives.

0:22:080:22:12

-Next, I want to show you a room which I think is a big plus.

-OK.

0:22:120:22:17

Come through this way.

0:22:170:22:19

I think this is a glorious room in this house.

0:22:190:22:23

Yes, it really is a nice conservatory.

0:22:230:22:27

It would be a fantastic room to sit with friends, have a meal, and enjoy the views all around.

0:22:270:22:34

I'm glad you like this space, but we are not finished down here. Go through and turn right.

0:22:340:22:40

'Things are looking up.

0:22:400:22:42

'Let's see if they can now imagine cosying up with the dogs in the lounge.'

0:22:420:22:46

We've got a working fireplace there.

0:22:460:22:49

-Great.

-I can imagine it being a lovely, cosy, winter's room,

0:22:490:22:53

with views again out on to the meadows, from that window there.

0:22:530:22:57

-Yes.

-From the outside, you really were quite taken with the look of this property. It's what you wanted.

0:22:570:23:03

Now we're in here, how are you feeling about this property as a whole?

0:23:030:23:07

Well, you're right, from the outside it was what I...

0:23:070:23:10

it is what I dreamt of, it's chocolate-box looking.

0:23:100:23:15

However, on the inside,

0:23:150:23:17

it's not for me. The rooms are too small.

0:23:170:23:21

I think what I really need again is another Georgian house but on a smaller scale,

0:23:210:23:28

but I do now know that a cottage is not going to accommodate my furniture, us...

0:23:280:23:34

Idyllic for the animals...

0:23:340:23:37

No matter how much I knocked it about, altered it...

0:23:370:23:41

it isn't for me, no.

0:23:410:23:44

Well, that's a good revelation.

0:23:440:23:47

Good to help you focus.

0:23:470:23:48

Don't write this property off completely, though. You haven't seen the upstairs,

0:23:480:23:52

and for what it is, a cottage, it offers quite a lot of space

0:23:520:23:55

-and some really good-sized rooms. Let's have a look upstairs.

-OK.

0:23:550:23:59

OK?

0:23:590:24:00

It's good to see Isobella is getting clearer about what she wants.

0:24:020:24:06

and it's NOT a small cottage.

0:24:060:24:07

I hope seeing the upstairs will focus her thoughts even more.

0:24:070:24:11

Up here there are three double bedrooms,

0:24:110:24:13

all of which are a reasonable size for a cottage,

0:24:130:24:15

and they do have those beautiful views over the woodland.

0:24:150:24:20

But I want to show them the large country-style bathroom.

0:24:200:24:23

Yeah, it's a pretty decent size.

0:24:230:24:26

There's lovely features in here. Again I love the beams.

0:24:260:24:31

We've been through the whole house, now it's time get outside,

0:24:310:24:34

-see how much land they've got and guess the price.

-OK.

0:24:340:24:38

Isobella might like the bathroom but it's clear a cottage isn't what she wants after all.

0:24:410:24:46

Even if she doesn't like the inside, her animals will love the outdoor space.

0:24:460:24:51

We're out into the gardens.

0:24:510:24:54

This property comes with just about an acre of land.

0:24:540:24:56

I think it is nicely divided, with this area sectioned off.

0:24:560:25:01

It could be perfect for our ostrich.

0:25:010:25:03

I was just thinking the same thing, yes.

0:25:030:25:06

Yes, it's idyllic for my animals.

0:25:060:25:08

It is really idyllic.

0:25:080:25:10

And we haven't forgotten about the business requirements either.

0:25:100:25:14

There are two outbuildings which could be converted for use as a craft gallery.

0:25:140:25:19

Additionally there is a modern building which Isobella may like to use as an office

0:25:190:25:23

or it could be a study area for David.

0:25:230:25:26

So I need to ask you, how much do you think it's worth?

0:25:280:25:31

I estimate about 450.

0:25:340:25:37

-You, David?

-I'd say about £500,000?

0:25:370:25:41

Well actually, it's on the market for £550,000.

0:25:410:25:45

Well, I am amazed.

0:25:450:25:47

I do think the house is very small.

0:25:470:25:50

I think you have to consider where we are.

0:25:500:25:53

The location is paramount at the moment.

0:25:530:25:56

We're close to Birmingham city centre, and that is going to have an effect on the property prices.

0:25:560:26:01

But for now, I want you to head back inside and have another look around.

0:26:010:26:05

-OK.

-And I'll catch up with you later.

-OK.

0:26:050:26:08

So this beautiful cottage is £50,000 under budget, at £550,000.

0:26:080:26:14

The outbuildings would be useful for the craft centre

0:26:200:26:23

and it all comes with one acre of land to home all the animals.

0:26:230:26:28

Unfortunately, though, they are both being too optimistic about what money buys in Worcestershire.

0:26:280:26:34

From the outside the property was idyllic for me,

0:26:340:26:38

it was what I imagine a cottage should be like.

0:26:380:26:41

It's an acre, it's not enough room, really, for me.

0:26:410:26:44

But the location of the garden, with the fields behind it,

0:26:440:26:49

and the sheep and horses and everything in the fields, it's a lovely outlook.

0:26:490:26:53

I thought the rooms were too small...

0:26:530:26:56

for me... The ceilings especially, and the doorways.

0:26:560:27:01

It's a big reality check, the actual price of the property.

0:27:010:27:04

It's got character, but...

0:27:040:27:07

it doesn't really have much of a modern feel, anyway.

0:27:070:27:11

OK, now don't worry, the journey isn't over yet.

0:27:110:27:16

There is more to see and do. Let's move on.

0:27:160:27:20

If Isobella opens her own craft centre, she'd be on the lookout

0:27:280:27:32

for locally-made quality artisan products, so we are visiting Michelle Parker,

0:27:320:27:36

a local blacksmith, to draw some inspiration.

0:27:360:27:40

She runs her own business forging steel into contemporary sculptures that she sells around the country.

0:27:400:27:45

Today she's showing us how to make a decorative leaf.

0:27:450:27:50

Tell us more about what it actually takes to make a piece.

0:27:500:27:55

Well, I think a lot of people think it is brute strength and it isn't really - it is technique.

0:27:550:28:00

Michelle shows us what's involved in heating up the metal and striking while the iron's hot.

0:28:000:28:05

So we've got a leaf shape coming there and then we neck it in a little bit more here.

0:28:070:28:12

When it's hot, it's like Plasticine, but you can't go like that with your fingers,

0:28:120:28:16

you've got to do it with that and the anvil.

0:28:160:28:19

This is how you're gonna get a great girlfriend! Looking manly,

0:28:190:28:23

pick up that hammer and show us how it's done. Are you ready?

0:28:230:28:25

'We all have a turn at firing up and shaping the metal.

0:28:290:28:33

'I can tell you, it is not just technique, it takes quite a bit of elbow grease.

0:28:330:28:38

'You never know, Isobella could even forge out a lucrative business relationship with Michelle,

0:28:580:29:03

'selling her goods in the gallery.'

0:29:030:29:06

And there's your leaf. It's a little bit warm.

0:29:060:29:08

Michelle, that is... I have to shake your hand, it's amazing.

0:29:080:29:13

It gives you an idea, if you have blacksmiths bringing work to your gallery, it gives you

0:29:130:29:17

-an idea of what has gone into the work you might be selling for them.

-That's right, yeah.

0:29:170:29:22

It's the end of day one for Isobella and David.

0:29:280:29:30

It's been a challenging house hunt so far, and now it's time to collect their thoughts.

0:29:300:29:35

What did you think about the two houses we saw today?

0:29:390:29:42

I thought the barn conversion was all right.

0:29:420:29:45

-The barn would be nice for you.

-Yeah.

0:29:450:29:49

-It's just a pity that the bedrooms were downstairs.

-Yeah.

0:29:490:29:53

The cottage was just...

0:29:530:29:55

-It was too small...

-No headroom.

0:29:550:30:00

-The headroom was dreadful.

-Yeah.

0:30:000:30:02

To me, I wouldn't use the kitchen as kitchen/diner,

0:30:020:30:07

-because there's just no room in there.

-No.

0:30:070:30:10

And imagine, with the dogs round your feet...

0:30:100:30:14

-Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing two more houses tomorrow.

-Mmm.

0:30:140:30:19

Isobella and her son, David, from Norwich

0:30:300:30:33

are looking for a new house in Worcestershire, and have a budget of £600,000.

0:30:330:30:39

After recently losing her husband, Isobella is looking forward to moving closer to loved ones

0:30:390:30:44

and is excited about starting a craft centre from her property.

0:30:440:30:47

So far, they've viewed two houses which have been quite a challenge in finding

0:30:470:30:52

the perfect balance between traditional and modern.

0:30:520:30:55

The price tags came as a shock too,

0:30:550:30:57

'but coming up, we are on a roll.'

0:30:570:31:00

Generally, yes, it's perfect.

0:31:000:31:04

-Perfect?

-Yes.

-Those are strong words from you.

-Yes.

0:31:040:31:07

And a property that could open the door to new beginnings.

0:31:070:31:11

I hope the house is going to be as good as the outbuildings!

0:31:110:31:14

Well, Isobella and her son want to move to Worcestershire, but so far

0:31:170:31:21

it looks as though something as grand as this may be more their style than the country cottage.

0:31:210:31:27

And I think that today, we are hoping that they get a little bit of fresh perspective

0:31:270:31:31

on what downsizing really means.

0:31:310:31:33

This journey was never going to be an easy one for Isobella or David,

0:31:350:31:39

and I'm keen to know how they are feeling about it now.

0:31:390:31:43

I know I'm making the right move living out in the country.

0:31:430:31:46

The fact that my friends and family will be close to me again,

0:31:460:31:51

it's really...very comforting for me.

0:31:510:31:54

What do you think Max, your husband, would have thought of this?

0:31:540:31:58

My husband would have understood

0:31:580:32:00

my thoughts, my feelings, everything.

0:32:000:32:03

He's always taught me - have a go, have a go.

0:32:030:32:06

I know to move back here is the best thing I can do.

0:32:060:32:10

Our first property this morning is in the small village of Berrow,

0:32:130:32:17

a 30 minute drive south-west of Worcester.

0:32:170:32:20

The larger village of Pendock

0:32:200:32:22

is just a stone's throw away, and caters for the milk and papers.

0:32:220:32:26

Melting into the Malvern Hills, it's a sleepy haven, a world away

0:32:260:32:30

from the urban environment where they currently live.

0:32:300:32:33

Along we come.

0:32:330:32:35

Now today I have brought you close to the Malvern Hills,

0:32:350:32:39

an area of outstanding natural beauty, in fact.

0:32:390:32:41

Into this lovely garden...

0:32:410:32:43

but this is where I think you'll get a very good view of this farmhouse-style house.

0:32:430:32:49

-I like it, it looks lovely.

-Good.

0:32:490:32:51

It looks very me.

0:32:510:32:53

What's looking "you" about it?!

0:32:530:32:56

It looks like the old...

0:32:560:33:00

and modern together, which is, I think, what I'm looking for, yes.

0:33:000:33:05

Exactly what you're looking for.

0:33:050:33:07

Well, this property is just over 100 years old,

0:33:070:33:09

although it has had a couple of extensions added on, as you can see.

0:33:090:33:13

There's been some modernisation inside,

0:33:130:33:17

done within this decade.

0:33:170:33:20

I can see big smiles, which is a fantastic start.

0:33:200:33:24

-So I want to get you inside so you can start to look around. Are you ready?

-Yes.

0:33:240:33:28

OK. Let's head back that way and in the front door.

0:33:280:33:30

Come through, and let's get these brollies put away.

0:33:350:33:38

And in a farmhouse style, we are straight into the kitchen.

0:33:390:33:45

Yes, I like it. I can see my favourite piece in there,

0:33:450:33:51

and generally, yes, it's...perfect.

0:33:510:33:54

Perfect?

0:33:540:33:56

-Yes.

-That's a strong word from you!

0:33:560:33:58

Yes.

0:33:580:34:00

It needs a few adjustments, but it is me, it is what I'm looking for.

0:34:000:34:05

It's spacious. It has the main article, the tiled floor,

0:34:050:34:12

the modern feel.

0:34:120:34:14

Just what I'm looking for, and a big dining area.

0:34:140:34:17

-Great, a big box ticked.

-Absolutely.

0:34:170:34:21

-I think we should move on.

-I'm happy.

-This is a fantastic start,

0:34:210:34:24

but there's a lot more in this house and a few nice surprises for you.

0:34:240:34:28

-Great.

-Let's go this way.

0:34:280:34:30

'Phew, am I glad to hear that.

0:34:300:34:33

'What a difference a day makes.'

0:34:330:34:34

So here is the main living space.

0:34:340:34:38

Although there is another reception area.

0:34:380:34:42

As you can see, these great French doors out onto the garden.

0:34:420:34:47

Absolutely, I like it.

0:34:470:34:49

It is perfect for me.

0:34:490:34:51

The layout, the wood burner, exactly what I wanted.

0:34:510:34:55

And straight out onto the patio.

0:34:550:34:58

-It's lovely.

-You're speechless, aren't you? But with joy!

0:34:580:35:01

I'm really amazed, yes, yeah.

0:35:010:35:03

When you walk into a house and you know it's for you...

0:35:030:35:07

I really like the feel of this house, most definitely, yeah, yeah.

0:35:070:35:10

That's really good news.

0:35:100:35:12

I'm really pleased.

0:35:120:35:14

I think it's time we found somewhere for you.

0:35:140:35:16

Come this way.

0:35:160:35:18

On the way, we are into this area, sort of like a boot room.

0:35:200:35:25

It's an alternative way into the house.

0:35:250:35:28

The dogs can come through here.

0:35:280:35:30

There is also a utility room through there, a nice big space for your laundry.

0:35:300:35:36

But I promised something for you, and I must deliver. Let's go.

0:35:360:35:40

So, David, how about this for a study?

0:35:430:35:45

Yeah, it's a good-sized room.

0:35:450:35:48

I could definitely see my computer in here and all my stuff in here, yeah.

0:35:480:35:54

And, look, you've got French doors going outside,

0:35:540:35:57

-so you've almost got your own entrance, haven't you?

-Yeah.

0:35:570:36:00

There's just one thing I think could make it even better.

0:36:000:36:03

If you could also have your living accommodation next to it, and sleep next door.

0:36:030:36:08

Which, guess what - you can. Let's have a look.

0:36:080:36:10

A bedroom next door

0:36:130:36:15

with en-suite.

0:36:150:36:18

Oh, great!

0:36:180:36:19

This is definitely you, isn't it?

0:36:190:36:22

You've got all of this space for a wardrobe.

0:36:220:36:25

A big bed in there, yeah.

0:36:250:36:28

And the windows and doors going straight on to the garden,

0:36:280:36:31

so lots of light, very open, all self-contained.

0:36:310:36:35

You need never go into the main house, apart from to eat.

0:36:350:36:39

I think we should show you the upstairs, where YOU might be sleeping. Let's go.

0:36:390:36:46

'This is exciting. They can both imagine themselves at home here.

0:36:460:36:50

'And I'm sure the dogs could feel quite cosy in the little snug

0:36:500:36:53

'which has French doors leading out on to the patio.

0:36:530:36:56

'Time to head upstairs to find some space for Isobella.'

0:36:560:37:00

It's very pink!

0:37:010:37:04

Oh, it's very pink.

0:37:040:37:06

Well-spotted, you two, no flies on you, yes it's pink!

0:37:060:37:09

It's clearly a little girl's room at the moment.

0:37:090:37:12

What I was thinking is that this could be your main room.

0:37:120:37:16

It's next door to the bathroom. You wouldn't need an en-suite.

0:37:160:37:20

No, and having four bedrooms, one can be my dressing room.

0:37:200:37:24

See, that's what I was thinking too, just across from the bathroom,

0:37:240:37:29

that other bedroom could be a walk-in wardrobe, dressing room, whatever you want -

0:37:290:37:34

shoes, boots, dresses, hats - and another spare bedroom.

0:37:340:37:38

I can already see the majority of my furniture.

0:37:380:37:42

In my mind I've already placed it into rooms, the more important bits.

0:37:420:37:47

Anything else that doesn't fit can certainly go.

0:37:470:37:51

But generally I'm really impressed with the house and I do very much like the house.

0:37:510:37:56

You couldn't ask for much more, could you, really?

0:37:560:37:59

-No.

-Apart from maybe an acre or so of land.

0:37:590:38:01

Just a few... Just a bit of land.

0:38:010:38:03

-Just a bit of land. Shall we go and have a look at that then?

-Lovely!

0:38:030:38:06

Do you want a lead the way and I'll follow you down?

0:38:060:38:09

'Wow, I really think we might have found Isobella and David their new home.

0:38:090:38:14

'Will the outdoor space be enough?

0:38:140:38:16

'I think it just might.'

0:38:160:38:18

So out here,

0:38:190:38:21

this is quite a cute little garden, isn't it?

0:38:210:38:24

It's very nice.

0:38:240:38:26

It's easy to maintain.

0:38:260:38:28

Well guess what? You get five acres.

0:38:280:38:31

Oh, wonderful!

0:38:310:38:34

That is absolutely great.

0:38:340:38:36

-Ethel the ostrich, she will be in heaven.

-She'll be in her element.

-Yes.

0:38:360:38:41

The dogs can run around, the geese, the ducks, anything else you want to bring home!

0:38:410:38:46

Oh, that's absolutely great.

0:38:460:38:49

I can just see it all now, I can see her in there, I can see the geese.

0:38:490:38:54

I've already an idea where I might be digging for the pond.

0:38:540:38:57

So there's clearly no shortage of space for the animals, and in addition to the hay barn,

0:38:590:39:04

there's plenty of room for erecting some outbuildings to house the craft centre.

0:39:040:39:09

Let's hope they're realistic about the money this time.

0:39:090:39:12

Well, here's the moment of truth.

0:39:120:39:14

Looking at this stunning house and bearing all of this in mind, all this land,

0:39:140:39:20

how much do you think it's worth?

0:39:200:39:22

I do think this is the top end of my budget.

0:39:220:39:25

I would say 585,000.

0:39:250:39:29

I'd say about 600,000.

0:39:290:39:33

Well, David, you're almost spot on, £50 short.

0:39:330:39:36

It's on the market for £599,950.

0:39:360:39:40

So, yes, at the very top end of your budget, but within the budget still.

0:39:400:39:44

And inside, you wouldn't have to do anything, would you?

0:39:440:39:48

-It doesn't require any work.

-No, we can move into it straightaway.

-It could be ideal.

0:39:480:39:52

-Most certainly.

-Well, with that thought in mind, off you go,

0:39:520:39:57

-back indoors, out of the rain, and we'll talk about this later on.

-OK.

0:39:570:40:01

-See you later.

-OK.

0:40:010:40:03

Success! She absolutely loves it. And I think they were a bit more realistic about the price this time.

0:40:040:40:10

It's bang on budget, and I think it could be the ideal house for them.

0:40:100:40:14

At 599,950, this detached barn conversion is just within budget.

0:40:140:40:20

Well, this room, I was thinking

0:40:330:40:36

we could put that big dining table in here, with the china cabinet and everything.

0:40:360:40:42

The whole of the house

0:40:420:40:44

suits me, suits my son, suits our personality.

0:40:440:40:48

Most certainly suits the inside animals that I have.

0:40:480:40:53

I think this room just off the kitchen is going to be great.

0:40:530:40:58

I can have Madonna the parrot up the corner, although she'll probably end up on the beams.

0:40:580:41:03

I was looking around the house, and I thought our furniture could fit into this house.

0:41:030:41:10

The style does suit the furniture,

0:41:100:41:13

even though it does have a modern twist to it.

0:41:130:41:17

OK, guys, the good news is that the rain has eased off a touch,

0:41:170:41:21

-but we still have a lot more to do, so let's get going.

-Great!

0:41:210:41:25

Now it's time for the mystery house and it's time for us to mix things up a bit

0:41:330:41:37

and see if they're open to a new way of life and maybe even a new business.

0:41:370:41:41

Now we're moving on to the mystery property, finally.

0:41:470:41:51

So what would you really like us to show you?

0:41:510:41:55

I now know that I would like the type of property that...

0:41:550:41:59

..gives the appearance of being old, but actually inside

0:42:000:42:06

is on the modern side and with at least three acres of ground.

0:42:060:42:11

Well, in that case, you never know, the mystery house might just do the trick,

0:42:120:42:16

and I can reveal it's just outside Arley, 25 miles west of Birmingham.

0:42:160:42:22

The small village has a pub, tearoom and a Post Office selling ice-creams

0:42:220:42:26

so well-stocked in refreshments.

0:42:260:42:29

It's also a place for picking up the Severn Valley steam railway,

0:42:290:42:32

which provides a relaxing way of taking in the luscious countryside.

0:42:320:42:37

Our mystery house is perfectly placed for admiring views

0:42:370:42:40

out over the Wyre Forest and the Malvern hills.

0:42:400:42:43

So this is it. You were making encouraging noises as we drove in.

0:42:450:42:51

Look at this.

0:42:510:42:52

Oh, it's fabulous, fabulous.

0:42:520:42:56

We are, of course at the mystery property.

0:42:560:42:58

-And the reason we've brought you here is because of all of this.

-Absolutely...

0:42:580:43:04

-Which means of course you can have a business if you want to!

-It's fantastic, absolutely fantastic.

0:43:040:43:09

The outbuildings are certainly what I'm looking for.

0:43:100:43:14

I'm just hoping now that the house is going to be as good as the outbuildings!

0:43:140:43:18

Let's go in.

0:43:180:43:19

We're straight into this fabulous kitchen.

0:43:250:43:28

Yeah, it's modern...

0:43:280:43:30

It's bright...

0:43:300:43:33

Missing one item.

0:43:330:43:36

I thought you might notice that.

0:43:360:43:37

-Yeah, they've got obviously a gas cooker over there.

-Uh-huh.

0:43:370:43:41

It's actually a converted Victorian barn.

0:43:410:43:44

-Now we're standing in the old milk parlour.

-Ah!

0:43:440:43:47

-As you can probably tell, lots of the work was done recently.

-Yeah, you can tell.

0:43:470:43:51

Throughout this decade and actually just finished this year.

0:43:510:43:55

-So really nicely done, very modern, very fresh.

-I like it.

-Good!

0:43:550:44:01

I think you're going to like the next room quite a bit as well. Let's head in here.

0:44:010:44:05

And...have a look in here.

0:44:050:44:09

-What do you think?

-Oh, wow, wow!

0:44:110:44:14

-It's different.

-It is, isn't it?

0:44:140:44:16

And if that was the milk parlour, this was the piggery.

0:44:160:44:19

Oh, my goodness.

0:44:190:44:21

I think they've done a great job!

0:44:210:44:23

Those circular windows there are where the pigs used to come in.

0:44:230:44:27

Oh, for God's sake...!

0:44:270:44:30

Well, I know I like animals but I don't want to live like one!

0:44:300:44:34

Let's go down and we can talk about it a bit more.

0:44:340:44:36

I thought you might be quite taken by this piece.

0:44:360:44:41

A fantastic fireplace.

0:44:410:44:43

Yes, it's... It's a lovely feature of the room.

0:44:430:44:48

It's just so quirky.

0:44:480:44:51

It will take me moments to adjust, but...I love it.

0:44:510:44:58

Actually it's a good-sized room.

0:44:580:45:00

And as a lounge, certainly my furniture will fit in here,

0:45:000:45:05

and if I changed the covers to a modern design, it will look perfect.

0:45:050:45:11

It's going to take a bit of adjustment, but for the right property, you're willing to adjust.

0:45:110:45:15

Oh, most certainly. I'm not too old to adjust.

0:45:150:45:19

It's ticking all the boxes for me at the moment. I can't wait to see more.

0:45:190:45:25

Well, I won't hold you back.

0:45:250:45:27

-I think we should investigate what else is on this floor. Follow me.

-OK.

0:45:270:45:31

'Wow, Isobella is even thinking of changing her furniture to fit in.

0:45:310:45:35

'She seems to be more and more ready to make this move.'

0:45:350:45:38

Into here, we're into a fairly large hallway area.

0:45:380:45:42

Oh right, yeah.

0:45:420:45:44

There are so many lovely features here.

0:45:440:45:47

-You're looking up at the glass, galleried walkway there...

-Yeah...I like it.

0:45:470:45:52

..and then the staircase.

0:45:520:45:54

They're looking quite dangerous to me....!

0:45:540:45:58

But generally, the layout and everything, it's fantastic.

0:45:580:46:02

I love the feel of it. I love how clean it feels.

0:46:020:46:06

You know, I would never, ever dream of looking at a place like this.

0:46:060:46:10

That is the purpose of the mystery house.

0:46:100:46:12

-Yes.

-To show you something you would never ever have dreamt of.

-Yeah.

0:46:120:46:16

-Would you like to see some more?

-Absolutely.

-Good!

0:46:160:46:18

Down here, we have one of the bedrooms.

0:46:200:46:24

Come on in, because, David, I was thinking,

0:46:240:46:26

-as it's on the ground floor, it could be perfect for you.

-Yeah.

0:46:260:46:30

It's a decent-size room.

0:46:300:46:33

A little bit smaller than what I'd want ideally but, yeah, it's got a lot of light in the room.

0:46:330:46:40

What do you think of the house as a whole so far?

0:46:400:46:43

It is a bit different, and out there,

0:46:430:46:45

but it's quite an interesting house

0:46:450:46:48

and...you would have to compromise on certain things

0:46:480:46:53

to live in a house like this, yeah.

0:46:530:46:56

David is a man of few words, but like his mum, he knows what he likes.

0:46:560:47:01

The bonus with this bedroom is the trendy wet room,

0:47:010:47:05

which I'm sure will go down a treat.

0:47:050:47:07

Oh, fabulous. Not bad. Nice and modern.

0:47:070:47:11

I think we should take a look upstairs.

0:47:110:47:13

Let's go.

0:47:160:47:17

Upstairs is the family bathroom which has a separate shower,

0:47:190:47:23

and next door is a double bedroom which would be fine for guests.

0:47:230:47:26

Last on our tour is a room for Isobella.

0:47:260:47:30

Well it's certainly a good size, lots of windows.

0:47:300:47:34

And, of course the view, still...

0:47:340:47:36

-Well, yes, yes.

-You can see from your bed.

0:47:360:47:38

I do like it, I like the feel of it.

0:47:380:47:41

At the moment I think it's short of storage space for me, short of a study for you.

0:47:410:47:47

I think the thing about this house is the outbuildings.

0:47:470:47:51

If they are suitable, it would certainly give me...

0:47:510:47:55

I would certainly consider the whole of the house. The area, everything.

0:47:550:48:01

-Great. Well, let's not waste any more time.

-Yeah.

-I'm going to show you those outbuildings.

0:48:010:48:05

'Isobella's first impression of the outbuildings was very promising.

0:48:070:48:12

'Let's find out if they fit in with what she has in mind for her craft centre.'

0:48:120:48:15

Oh, right...

0:48:150:48:17

What a fabulous amount of space.

0:48:170:48:20

Isn't it, yeah? Yeah.

0:48:200:48:23

What do you want to do with a business?

0:48:230:48:26

The outbuildings would be divided into separate units.

0:48:260:48:31

Like little shops, but just crafty shops.

0:48:310:48:34

The great thing about this is there's already a structure here,

0:48:340:48:38

-so you could...

-It can be achieved, yes.

-Exactly.

0:48:380:48:42

-And we are by a main road, but if you're running a business, that's an advantage.

-Well, it is, yes.

0:48:420:48:48

Don't forget next door we've got that enormous Dutch barn.

0:48:480:48:51

Well, I've already thought about that and my first thoughts for it were,

0:48:510:48:56

it's great as a cafe, restaurant, you could have barn dances in there.

0:48:560:49:03

You can have parties, all sorts of things have sprung to mind.

0:49:030:49:07

'Well, Isobella's business plans certainly seem to be flowing.

0:49:080:49:12

'That just leaves all those animals.'

0:49:120:49:14

Well, we're finally out into the garden space.

0:49:140:49:17

-I think this is a lovely area. The patio, the lawned area, nice and neat and tidy.

-Uh-huh.

0:49:170:49:23

-In terms of how much land you get, an acre and a half.

-Oh...

0:49:230:49:26

-So, it's this fence all the way around.

-Right.

0:49:260:49:30

So do you think you could squeeze Ethel in here?

0:49:300:49:32

I certainly could squeeze Ethel in. It's quite a an ideal place for her.

0:49:320:49:37

-Anyway, the moment has arrived.

-Right.

0:49:370:49:40

I'm trying to put it off but I've got to ask you,

0:49:400:49:43

given all that you get, and the location, how much do you think it's worth?

0:49:430:49:48

I think...maybe...565.

0:49:480:49:55

I'd say about...530.

0:49:550:49:59

David, you went a bit lower there.

0:49:590:50:00

-But I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised. This is on the market at £495,000.

-My God!

0:50:000:50:07

Now what difference does that make to your thoughts?

0:50:070:50:10

-Wow!

-100 grand under budget.

0:50:120:50:15

Dear me, it certainly deserves a lot of consideration and further investigation.

0:50:150:50:21

It does. I think you should start investigating straightaway.

0:50:210:50:24

Go back in there, look around again, let it all sink in and we'll catch up later on.

0:50:240:50:29

-OK, thank you.

-See you in a bit.

0:50:290:50:31

Well, with 100 grand left to spend, she could turn that into a fantastic business

0:50:320:50:36

and maybe the size of the house won't be so important after all.

0:50:360:50:40

This is not the kind of property...

0:51:030:51:05

If it was sent to me from an agent, I don't think I would make an appointment to view.

0:51:050:51:10

But I'm getting out of the car and looking at it, I thought, "Well, it looks interesting."

0:51:100:51:16

It does have...

0:51:160:51:18

quite interesting properties to it and it is quite quirky.

0:51:180:51:23

I love it. It's old from the outside, yet lovely inside, clean, modern.

0:51:230:51:29

Well, this looks like a great cooker, but I would still miss the range cooker.

0:51:290:51:35

If it was just for me, then, yeah,

0:51:350:51:37

but because it's me and my mum, it's not really the size we're looking for.

0:51:370:51:43

OK, you two, you've seen all of the properties now.

0:51:450:51:48

-I know you've lots to think about, so let's get a move on.

-OK.

0:51:480:51:52

Isobella and David's tour round the houses has had its ups and downs.

0:52:010:52:07

It's important they find a new home to suit them both and accommodate a business,

0:52:070:52:11

so there's plenty to think about.

0:52:110:52:13

Finding space for lots of animals and furniture

0:52:160:52:19

has been an important factor in this week's property search.

0:52:190:52:22

Now, I think we've shown Isobella and her son a range of houses that will accommodate all of them.

0:52:220:52:27

But the question is, is Isobella ready to downsize?

0:52:270:52:31

Well, let's find out.

0:52:310:52:32

Well, this journey for you two signifies the start of your move back home to your roots.

0:52:370:52:42

We've seen lots of properties. I think it's time we went through them and your decisions.

0:52:420:52:47

Start with the barn conversion.

0:52:470:52:49

My first impression... "Looks like a bungalow."

0:52:490:52:52

Didn't want a bungalow.

0:52:520:52:55

As you walk in, the first thing you saw was the kitchen, which I thought,

0:52:550:52:59

"I don't like that idea."

0:52:590:53:01

There were considerations about your furniture...

0:53:010:53:04

-and fitting it in, and you were starting to think at that point about the downsizing operation.

-Yes.

0:53:040:53:10

My furniture's very traditional, I'm very traditional,

0:53:100:53:14

and I was thinking, "My furniture isn't going to look right

0:53:140:53:17

"in a modern barn conversion."

0:53:170:53:19

There were points you loved about that property?

0:53:190:53:22

Yeah, I loved the living room and the view was magnificent.

0:53:220:53:26

The fireplace was...was lovely,

0:53:260:53:29

just what I wanted - a nice wood-burner.

0:53:290:53:32

And above it was like a galleried landing with office space.

0:53:320:53:37

That was nice.

0:53:370:53:40

-Let's talk about the cottage.

-Right.

0:53:400:53:42

I don't think I have to remind you about that one, what were your thoughts?

0:53:420:53:46

It was my idea of how cottages should look.

0:53:460:53:48

I particularly remember the height of the ceiling and I thought, "Oh, dear me!"

0:53:480:53:54

I hated the height of the ceiling, quite honestly.

0:53:540:53:57

It is very cosy. It has got that cottage, snug feeling,

0:53:570:54:01

but it definitely is not for me, and...

0:54:010:54:05

I really don't think I will look at any more cottages.

0:54:050:54:08

So, let's move on and talk about the farmhouse.

0:54:080:54:11

I was very impressed.

0:54:110:54:13

With that house, the way you walk in,

0:54:130:54:15

you do go into the kitchen, but it didn't seem to bother you that time.

0:54:150:54:19

It was very open plan, which I loved.

0:54:190:54:21

And the other side was a big dining area, and I could just see...

0:54:210:54:27

my friends sitting round the table having a glass of wine while I'm preparing the meal -

0:54:270:54:32

The whole area was great for me.

0:54:320:54:34

-You got a great vibe as soon as you walked in.

-Yes. Yeah.

0:54:340:54:37

-That was the first place where you really thought you could see your furniture.

-Absolutely. Yeah.

0:54:370:54:43

Even though it was modern inside.

0:54:430:54:46

But it was a Victorian conversion.

0:54:460:54:48

-Yeah.

-So you had that mix of traditional and modern, which is what you were looking for.

-Yeah.

0:54:480:54:54

There's a great room for my study and bedroom right at the end. That's ideal for me.

0:54:540:55:01

Looking at the house from the outside, I thought, "It's a nice-looking house,"

0:55:010:55:06

and then when you said five acres, I thought, "Oh, wow!"

0:55:060:55:09

But then we went to the mystery house and that was designed to push you even further,

0:55:090:55:14

really stretch your imagination and get your juices going. What did you think of that?

0:55:140:55:18

I thought, "Here it is, my business and a dwelling - together."

0:55:180:55:24

I was thinking, "This is too good to be true, something's got to be wrong about this property."

0:55:240:55:29

Looking round the house, I had a few reservations

0:55:290:55:33

and it was just that little bit too small.

0:55:330:55:35

We couldn't have led private lives in that house.

0:55:350:55:39

There was no area to escape to, sort of thing, so...

0:55:390:55:44

So, overall, I've got to ask, have you made a decision, are you going to go for any of the properties?

0:55:440:55:49

I'm certainly going to look a little bit further into the farmhouse.

0:55:490:55:53

If your investigations into the farmhouse go well, do you think you might put an offer in?

0:55:530:55:57

I certainly think we might.

0:55:570:56:01

-It's definitely something to consider, definitely.

-Yeah, yeah...

0:56:010:56:05

-I would be happy there.

-Yeah.

-That could be the one.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:56:050:56:08

I'm so excited! All right, I'm really pleased for you.

0:56:080:56:11

I'm glad we could be with you on this part of the journey.

0:56:110:56:14

-I wish you luck with the rest...

-Thank you.

0:56:140:56:16

-..to find somewhere you can fit the furniture and the animals and can be happy.

-Yeah, thank you.

0:56:160:56:22

We haven't had much luck with the weather during this week's property search

0:56:280:56:32

but I think we may just have found success in finding a home for Isobella and David,

0:56:320:56:36

the ostrich and the furniture for their move back to Worcestershire.

0:56:360:56:40

I'll see you next time on Escape To The Country.
