In Britain, we have an amazing array of places we call home.

0:00:040:00:07

From thatched cottages and conversions

0:00:070:00:09

to terraced housing and tower blocks.

0:00:090:00:12

But when it comes to interior design,

0:00:120:00:15

we don't always make the best of the rooms we live in.

0:00:150:00:18

So, 24 amateur designers competed against each other, to show us

0:00:180:00:22

how it should be done.

0:00:220:00:24

I'm so annoyed!

0:00:240:00:27

It's been a spanner in the works.

0:00:270:00:29

They took on a variety of rooms. From kitchens, to bedrooms...

0:00:290:00:33

It's starting to look like a room! Hurrah!

0:00:330:00:36

..sitting rooms to dining rooms...

0:00:360:00:38

So this is the "ta-da" moment!

0:00:380:00:41

It's the final of the competition and only two designers remain.

0:00:420:00:46

Both have shown exceptional flair and creativity.

0:00:460:00:49

Now they're taking on a whole house each on the same street.

0:00:490:00:53

I'm just excited, it's such a big challenge but I'm ready for it.

0:00:530:00:58

I'm still pretty amazed that I'm here. I'm really properly nervous.

0:00:580:01:03

Deciding who has the talent to win are president elect

0:01:030:01:05

of the British Institute of Interior Design, Daniel Hopwood.

0:01:050:01:09

The standard of the finalists is very high, not only are

0:01:090:01:12

they very adaptable but they have a recognisable, sophisticated style.

0:01:120:01:17

And interior stylist and magazine journalist Sophie Robinson.

0:01:170:01:21

We've got two talented designers with very different skillsets.

0:01:210:01:26

They've worked so hard to be here, honing their skills on each

0:01:260:01:29

of the rounds, but now only one of them can design their way to victory

0:01:290:01:33

and come out as the winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:330:01:36

For their final challenge, our amateurs will each be redesigning

0:01:440:01:48

three rooms and a hallway in two Georgian houses in Liverpool.

0:01:480:01:51

Working in different houses to different briefs,

0:01:520:01:55

this is their most challenging project to date.

0:01:550:01:58

The architecture and the period might be a bit of a challenge.

0:01:580:02:01

The worst bit is the bit with the door in.

0:02:010:02:03

He's got a green cloth that I don't want, that's the problem.

0:02:030:02:06

They need to build, paint, sew and style

0:02:060:02:10

their way to prove their design is the best.

0:02:100:02:13

And the winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge is...

0:02:130:02:17

This imposing Georgian terrace was built in 1827, in what was

0:02:210:02:25

then the industrial outskirts of Liverpool, and after the fripperies

0:02:250:02:28

of the Regency period the decade before, represents a sober end to

0:02:280:02:32

the Georgian period that dominated British architecture for 120 years.

0:02:320:02:36

By the 19th century, Liverpool had become an international

0:02:380:02:40

trading hub, dealing with commodities such as salt

0:02:400:02:43

and tobacco and the cotton that fed the textile mills of Lancashire.

0:02:430:02:47

This terrace was built from the profits of industrialists,

0:02:490:02:52

shipbuilders, and merchants,

0:02:520:02:53

who turned to house building as a new business venture and created

0:02:530:02:57

these streets as much to make even more profit

0:02:570:03:00

as any love for urban living.

0:03:000:03:01

It's two of these houses our finalists are redesigning,

0:03:050:03:09

in their bid to win.

0:03:090:03:10

Our first finalist is 30-year-old Jordan who lives in south London

0:03:140:03:17

with partner Russell.

0:03:170:03:19

It feels amazing to get this far in the competition,

0:03:190:03:22

I always said from the start

0:03:220:03:24

I was in it to get to the final, and to actually be here is amazing.

0:03:240:03:28

Jordan's job is running a cafe, so designing interiors for real

0:03:280:03:31

clients for the first time has been a challenge.

0:03:310:03:35

I think I've worked so hard and harder each week.

0:03:350:03:38

To have come as close to this as I have is amazing

0:03:380:03:44

but I just want to go that extra mile now and cross that finish line.

0:03:440:03:48

He's tried lots of things in his life

0:03:480:03:50

and perhaps this could be the one,

0:03:500:03:52

and I think if he was to win this, it would

0:03:520:03:55

absolutely mean the world to him.

0:03:550:03:57

My family will be over the moon if I win,

0:03:570:03:59

it's the icing on the cake, isn't it?

0:03:590:04:01

-Also competing for the title is 41-year-old Sarah...

-Dad's in.

0:04:040:04:09

..who lives in West Sussex with her husband and three children.

0:04:090:04:12

It's pretty amazing to have made it to the final,

0:04:120:04:15

I feel like I've come a long way.

0:04:150:04:18

Sarah designs vintage homewares for a living,

0:04:180:04:21

but delivering an entire room scheme has tested her creativity.

0:04:210:04:25

You definitely feel like you've got to pull something extra out

0:04:250:04:29

of the bag. This is the final week, it can't just be nice or lovely

0:04:290:04:32

or sweet, it's got to be amazing and outstanding and eye-catching.

0:04:320:04:37

'She's worked incredibly hard. Sarah's had to run the house'

0:04:370:04:40

and look after the children as well as putting her back into this.

0:04:400:04:45

So, it's been chaos but she's done really well.

0:04:450:04:48

From a personal point of view, I can't even think about what it would

0:04:480:04:52

be like to win, it'd be fantastic

0:04:520:04:54

but that is a long way away.

0:04:540:04:58

Now both Sarah and Jordan have come to Liverpool for their final

0:05:010:05:04

design showdown.

0:05:040:05:06

Well, you two, you've got through to the final, the big one, well done!

0:05:060:05:10

You've worked so hard but we're going to ask a bit more of you -

0:05:100:05:13

you've got to work a little bit harder!

0:05:130:05:15

You've got three rooms and a hallway to do.

0:05:150:05:18

Exactly. I think you've probably

0:05:180:05:20

realised by now that we rather like what you do. So, confidence,

0:05:200:05:24

give us lots of style and more of what you're really talented at.

0:05:240:05:28

Yeah, we're particularly excited to see your designs,

0:05:280:05:31

we already think you're great designers but given the extra

0:05:310:05:34

rooms it really is an opportunity for you to show us your best.

0:05:340:05:38

The first home belongs to Andrew, Gaynor

0:05:430:05:46

and their two children, Rosie and Tom.

0:05:460:05:49

When we first moved in, I loved it.

0:05:490:05:51

It was very blank and lots of space for us to do what we wanted

0:05:510:05:56

but we haven't got round to it.

0:05:560:05:58

We filled the house with our stuff basically,

0:05:580:06:01

put some pictures up, I think

0:06:010:06:03

that's the token concession to home improvement, really, in three years.

0:06:030:06:07

Before the designers start,

0:06:070:06:09

the judges want to see the potential of each house.

0:06:090:06:12

My first impression is this is quite a neat, standard-sized hallway.

0:06:130:06:17

Yeah, well, actually, they're quite narrow but that's what they always

0:06:170:06:21

were like, just a passing through room really and they've got

0:06:210:06:24

radiator cupboards which are taking a lot of the width up too.

0:06:240:06:27

I notice they've got a little bit of originality

0:06:270:06:30

which are the corbels up here.

0:06:300:06:32

What's really super about the Georgian period is all those

0:06:320:06:35

decorative elements weren't decorative, they were doing a job.

0:06:350:06:38

Hiding the movement that's going between the two plains from the

0:06:380:06:42

beam and the wall, and if there's any cracking, you won't see it.

0:06:420:06:46

You could really go for it as it's not like you have to stare and look at it.

0:06:460:06:50

It's an opportunity for our designers to do something, maybe, quite daring.

0:06:500:06:53

The house has had many changes over the years,

0:06:530:06:55

so many original features have been lost.

0:06:550:06:59

The first thing that hits me about this room is it feels very tall,

0:06:590:07:03

the proportions feel quite out.

0:07:030:07:04

That's because all the mouldings are missing, the cornice,

0:07:040:07:07

the picture rail, it just feels a bit sad.

0:07:070:07:10

So all those period features that unfortunately have been

0:07:100:07:13

ripped out of this property has actually just really affected

0:07:130:07:16

the whole general proportion and feel of this space.

0:07:160:07:18

Exactly, but it's not too difficult to put them all back.

0:07:180:07:21

I think the real challenge for the designer in this room is to

0:07:210:07:24

really stamp on an element of design and personality in this room

0:07:240:07:27

and make it a space you really want to hang out in.

0:07:270:07:31

The designer will also be taking on a plain guest

0:07:310:07:33

bedroom-cum-playroom on the first floor.

0:07:330:07:37

And a children's bedroom on the second floor belonging to

0:07:370:07:40

nine-year-old Rosie.

0:07:400:07:42

So, being the final,

0:07:420:07:44

they've certainly got a big challenge ahead of them.

0:07:440:07:46

The finalist in charge of this first house is Jordan,

0:07:480:07:52

who's shown a flair for imaginative design.

0:07:520:07:54

In his heat, he played with paint techniques, blending

0:07:540:07:58

furniture into walls and added a dramatic mural and period panelling.

0:07:580:08:02

Next he went all-out to prove he could work with strong colours and

0:08:030:08:07

bold pattern, before winning his place in the final with a cutting

0:08:070:08:11

edge design using origami wallpaper, magnetic paint and geometric prints.

0:08:110:08:16

Now his challenge is to get some character into this Georgian home.

0:08:180:08:21

Are you ready for a little look?

0:08:210:08:23

We are, we are, very ready for a look!

0:08:230:08:25

Right, well, we'll start here...

0:08:250:08:27

He's been working on his homeowners' brief for a week,

0:08:270:08:30

but this is the first time they're meeting.

0:08:300:08:33

He starts with the hallway.

0:08:330:08:34

It's a massive statement as you walk through the door.

0:08:340:08:36

-I mean, the ceiling height's...

-First impression, isn't it?

0:08:360:08:39

Absolutely, and really soft, subtle colours with the heritage,

0:08:390:08:42

a darker green on the bottom and a paler one on the top.

0:08:420:08:44

The two radiator covers that you've got existing, I'm going to be

0:08:440:08:47

disguising those and doing two built-ins so there's somewhere

0:08:470:08:50

to hide all of your everyday junk, coats, things like that and a

0:08:500:08:54

nice little seat so you can pop your wellies on for a wintry day.

0:08:540:08:58

People will not want to go anywhere else apart from the hall,

0:08:580:09:01

we'll be having parties in the hallway.

0:09:010:09:03

He'll give the practical hallway a homely feel,

0:09:030:09:06

with soft green paint, panelling, and pictures.

0:09:060:09:09

A theme he'll continue in the currently featureless living room.

0:09:090:09:12

I know you were keen to get some architectural features

0:09:120:09:15

back into the house, so we're going full throttle here.

0:09:150:09:18

There's going to be a fireplace with some...

0:09:180:09:20

I have hand painted tiles for you.

0:09:200:09:22

I know you were keen on a sort of cornflower blue, which is

0:09:220:09:25

going to be going on the bottom half of the room,

0:09:250:09:28

and we're going to panel the entire room halfway around which,

0:09:280:09:31

hopefully, is going to look stunning as well.

0:09:310:09:33

A beautiful mural which is going onto the piano wall, which is

0:09:330:09:36

like a countryside scene, because I know you were

0:09:360:09:38

interested in that sort of country look, sort of heritage feel.

0:09:380:09:41

-Just what we wanted, so perfect!

-Fantastic!

0:09:410:09:43

-We love all those sort of Georgian colour palates...

-Yeah, me too.

0:09:430:09:47

The period details and blue scheme will create drama in the front room.

0:09:470:09:51

He has equally bold plans for the guest-cum-playroom.

0:09:510:09:55

It's going to be really restful and sort of peaceful at the same time,

0:09:550:09:58

it's going to be able to flip and be a great playroom for the kids.

0:09:580:10:01

And this is the sort of fabric and colours that I'm going to be using.

0:10:010:10:04

Stripes are obviously going to be vertical as well

0:10:040:10:06

so it's really going to make the most of that, really high ceilings,

0:10:060:10:09

and we're keeping the day bed that you have, these are going to

0:10:090:10:12

be supersized willow trees that are going to frame that. So, it's going

0:10:120:10:15

to feel quite ethereal and magical and fun for the kids but then...

0:10:150:10:18

Like Narnia?

0:10:180:10:19

Yeah, but then transformed into a really smart, restful guest room.

0:10:190:10:23

Not too shocking, I hope!

0:10:230:10:25

No, it's beautiful, that's really beautiful.

0:10:250:10:28

His stripy design for this rooms may have a fairy-tale feel,

0:10:280:10:32

but his most dramatic scheme will be in nine-year-old Rosie's bedroom.

0:10:320:10:36

I know she loves purples, and pinks.

0:10:360:10:38

We've got an amazing wallpaper which is going onto one wall, which again

0:10:380:10:43

is hand printed and I've got a chair that I'm going to be upholstering.

0:10:430:10:46

I'm going to be building a little wardrobe in there

0:10:460:10:48

and a new desk. I've got some really interesting ideas with

0:10:480:10:51

some floating book shelves, I'll keep that as a bit of a surprise

0:10:510:10:54

maybe for later, cos I know she's a bit of a bookworm.

0:10:540:10:56

-Oh, she certainly is.

-Yes.

0:10:560:10:57

A room that she can grow into a little bit as well.

0:10:570:10:59

They're lovely, she's going to love this.

0:10:590:11:01

You have managed to do a whole pile of things

0:11:010:11:03

-I would never have thought of doing.

-I'm very excited, thank you.

0:11:030:11:06

-Fabulous!

-Amazing!

0:11:060:11:08

Jordan is a true showman, not only in his style

0:11:080:11:11

but also in his presentation.

0:11:110:11:12

He tapped into the heritage of the Georgian period

0:11:120:11:15

and putting in some sense of authenticity back into the home,

0:11:150:11:19

they loved it!

0:11:190:11:20

Yeah, but I am a little bit concerned we're seeing panel,

0:11:200:11:23

which he's done before, we've seen the tableaus on the wall.

0:11:230:11:26

It's part of his repertoire, I know, but I'm hoping we're not getting

0:11:260:11:29

a repeat because I want to see something new from him this time.

0:11:290:11:32

For the final, both designers have 72 hours spread across four days,

0:11:330:11:38

£4,400, two builders and a decorator to complete their designs.

0:11:380:11:42

Yeah, I think it's going to look amazing if we can pull it off...

0:11:420:11:45

-When we pull it off!

-Of course we can.

0:11:450:11:47

And they can bring support from home,

0:11:470:11:49

so Jordan's brought partner Russell.

0:11:490:11:51

It's so much to take on board that, yeah, if I stop

0:11:510:11:54

and think too much about it, I think I might fall over.

0:11:540:11:57

Our second Georgian house is home to Tracy, Jim

0:12:000:12:03

and their three young children.

0:12:030:12:05

Our house at the moment is many styles, actually,

0:12:050:12:09

each room has a character of its own.

0:12:090:12:12

There's lots of different things going on in the house, I think.

0:12:120:12:15

If the designer can capture elements of Jim

0:12:150:12:18

and I, then I will be very pleased.

0:12:180:12:20

Now this is a grand hallway, is it not?

0:12:220:12:25

I'm just seeing original features everywhere I look in here.

0:12:250:12:28

And this is classic of this period, having the square in the corners.

0:12:280:12:32

And up on the top there

0:12:320:12:34

they might have put plates or little busts and things.

0:12:340:12:37

But in terms of design, you need to think about quite cost effective

0:12:370:12:40

solutions for big hallways. Well, any hallway, really.

0:12:400:12:43

Because hallways also require a lot of practical solutions.

0:12:430:12:46

This is a busy family, young kids,

0:12:460:12:48

we can already see it takes a lot of knocks.

0:12:480:12:51

So you probably want to veer away from expensive wall coverings

0:12:510:12:54

or designer paints because they need touching up.

0:12:540:12:57

Normally, I'd use fabric backed wallpapers in a hallway,

0:12:570:12:59

they usually work quite well.

0:12:590:13:02

And what an elegant room this is. Packed with original features,

0:13:020:13:06

typical of Georgian houses.

0:13:060:13:08

During the time of window tax,

0:13:080:13:10

if you went over seven windows, you started paying high tax.

0:13:100:13:13

So instead of having lots of windows they just used to make them bigger.

0:13:130:13:18

Actually, just looking over here, they've got the original shutters.

0:13:180:13:23

How stunning is that?

0:13:230:13:25

The two upstairs rooms to be redesigned are a sparse

0:13:260:13:29

guest room occasionally used by visiting grandparents,

0:13:290:13:33

and nine-year-old Charlie's plain white bedroom.

0:13:330:13:37

And I've spotted something that would intimidate any interior

0:13:380:13:41

designer - a huge stack of very stylish interior design books.

0:13:410:13:45

So, I think the biggest challenge is meeting the client's expectations.

0:13:450:13:50

Taking on the challenge is vintage homewares designer Sarah.

0:13:520:13:56

Throughout the competition, she's used her craft skills,

0:13:580:14:02

stencilling, upholstering and painting her way through her

0:14:020:14:05

heat in a traditional Edwardian bedroom.

0:14:050:14:08

She brought more creative, handmade ideas to a sitting

0:14:100:14:12

room in a country cottage, with a woodland design with modern edge.

0:14:120:14:17

Before securing her place in the final with a bolder look,

0:14:170:14:20

introducing wallpaper and bright colours to a Victorian dining room.

0:14:200:14:25

The judges want to see more versatility from Sarah, and

0:14:250:14:28

with the house already in good order,

0:14:280:14:30

it'll be tough to make her mark.

0:14:300:14:32

We're going to start with the hallway, I know first

0:14:320:14:34

impressions are important and I thought bold, simple...

0:14:340:14:38

I know you said you wanted some welcoming colours.

0:14:380:14:40

-Yes.

-The lovely, dark colour...

-Indeed.

0:14:400:14:43

..and then a stripe above that

0:14:430:14:44

and then the whole of the rest of the hallway in this colour here.

0:14:440:14:47

I like that idea.

0:14:470:14:49

The three tones of grey will soften the black

0:14:490:14:51

and white chequerboard floor, while she's aiming for a more

0:14:510:14:53

dramatic look in the front sitting and dining room.

0:14:530:14:56

You're after something quite gentlemanly and clubby.

0:14:560:14:59

I know that you said you were interested in thinking

0:14:590:15:01

about a snooker table that could be metamorphic for a dining table.

0:15:010:15:05

I have actually found one that has ball and claw feet.

0:15:050:15:08

This one's quite unusual and it comes with slats that go over

0:15:080:15:11

the top to turn it into a very straightforward dining table.

0:15:110:15:14

-Oh, wonderful!

-I am thinking about putting glass into your shelving

0:15:140:15:18

so your beautiful collection of books can just sing out

0:15:180:15:21

and it can be all about the books in there.

0:15:210:15:23

Colour-wise, now I know you've said you'd like some grey...

0:15:230:15:27

I was hoping that I could persuade you with some olive green.

0:15:270:15:31

No, no, that would actually have been my second choice.

0:15:310:15:33

Mixing traditional with modern elements like a copper light

0:15:330:15:36

and glass shelving is a tried and tested look for Sarah,

0:15:360:15:40

but her plans for Charlie's bedroom are a radical departure.

0:15:400:15:43

What I would like to do is run a stripe around his room,

0:15:430:15:46

like the go-faster stripes.

0:15:460:15:48

That is the green here.

0:15:480:15:50

This is the green. I'm very, very fond of apple green.

0:15:500:15:54

-If we took it up a stage...

-Yeah, that's fine.

0:15:540:15:57

-Yeah.

-I'll go and get that mixed, not a problem, we can sort that out.

0:15:570:16:00

Would that be all right? Could you address that?

0:16:000:16:02

-Yes, that's absolutely fine.

-I love apple green.

0:16:020:16:04

I've thought about making a bunk bed that is sort of a cabin bed,

0:16:040:16:07

has some shelving inside it...

0:16:070:16:08

Ooh, lovely!

0:16:080:16:09

..and that, I was hoping to paint the interiors green as well

0:16:090:16:13

and leave all the outsides white.

0:16:130:16:15

A rug, I love old things and I make a lot of stuff out of vintage

0:16:160:16:19

materials, and I've made some pebbles that I'm going to sew

0:16:190:16:22

together into a lovely textured big pebble rug.

0:16:220:16:26

This sounds exciting!

0:16:260:16:28

The look will be modern, with a green stripe dominating

0:16:280:16:30

the room from floor to ceiling, and a slide for toy cars.

0:16:300:16:34

But she's back on more familiar territory in the guest room.

0:16:340:16:38

-I've had a blue moment.

-You're having a blue moment.

0:16:380:16:40

Now this is a fantastic Georgian drawing room blue, which is bold.

0:16:400:16:45

Now I don't know how you feel about that?

0:16:450:16:47

-Go for it!

-Really?

0:16:470:16:49

Absolutely, go for it!

0:16:490:16:50

And I would like if possible to run shelving all the way around the

0:16:500:16:53

room and I have some Shaker-style pegs that I'd like to put a run

0:16:530:16:57

in around the room so that you can hang towels, your guests can hang

0:16:570:17:00

up their clothes and it's something that it's not a wardrobe, it's

0:17:000:17:03

not taking up space in the room but it's there for whatever you need it.

0:17:030:17:06

-Very excited!

-I'm absolutely amazed that you've let us into your home and

0:17:060:17:09

I feel the full weight of it on my shoulders, so I'm going to really...

0:17:090:17:12

-I think you'll deliver.

-I hope so!

0:17:120:17:15

Tracy and Jim know what they like, they've got really good taste.

0:17:150:17:18

They think it's going to be fun to bring in a new designer.

0:17:180:17:20

But Tracy's already pointed out, she already knows what colour she likes, she knows what design she likes

0:17:200:17:25

and she's going to push Sarah all the way.

0:17:250:17:27

She's got a client who wants to be tested, let's say.

0:17:270:17:31

So I'm just hoping she'll go for it and just grabs it.

0:17:310:17:34

Along with her two builders and decorator,

0:17:360:17:39

Sarah's brought along best friend Maxine.

0:17:390:17:41

The plan is to take out the bottom cupboard and the rest of in here

0:17:410:17:45

is just a paint down and it's going to this olive green.

0:17:450:17:48

The biggest challenge I have here is the house has got such

0:17:480:17:50

fantastic things in it and the homeowners have got such

0:17:500:17:53

great taste that it is just so important not

0:17:530:17:56

to put anything past their door that is anything other than fantastic.

0:17:560:18:00

So that might have to come out.

0:18:000:18:02

Both houses are being packed up

0:18:020:18:04

and stripped back in preparation for their brand-new schemes.

0:18:040:18:07

Sorry, Barbie!

0:18:070:18:09

With four designs each, the finalists are under pressure.

0:18:090:18:12

So, judges, what are the challenges for the final?

0:18:130:18:16

The architecture and the period might be a bit of a challenge,

0:18:160:18:19

wouldn't you say, Sophie?

0:18:190:18:21

Yes, especially in Tracy and Jim's house.

0:18:210:18:23

They've got a very grand house, lots of original period features.

0:18:230:18:26

So, in one way, it's a gift for Sarah because it's a beautiful

0:18:260:18:30

house already but I think the challenge for her is going to

0:18:300:18:32

be having happy clients because they've got quite high expectations.

0:18:320:18:36

Gaynor and Andrew have a very simple home, everything's been

0:18:360:18:39

ripped out, so it's kind of a white box, really, and in terms of the

0:18:390:18:42

brief, they didn't give much away. They want something simple, elegant,

0:18:420:18:45

classic and they've got Jordan coming in to design it for them!

0:18:450:18:48

Yeah, they didn't realise they'd get a little bit of pizzazz.

0:18:480:18:52

To add the pizzazz in his guest-cum-playroom,

0:18:520:18:54

Jordan's decorator is measuring out stripes.

0:18:540:18:57

For his traditional scheme in the front room,

0:18:580:19:00

he's adding period details.

0:19:000:19:02

So far, so good. No breakages, which is good!

0:19:020:19:06

Oh, hang on, spoke too soon.

0:19:070:19:10

One, one out of 60's not bad.

0:19:100:19:12

The tiles will make up the centre of the fireplace.

0:19:120:19:17

This is the back plate for the fireplace. Obviously,

0:19:170:19:20

the surround's going to be there and the fire basket will sit here.

0:19:200:19:24

He's bought a £5 pack of basic bathroom tiles,

0:19:240:19:27

and is hand-painting them with glass paint.

0:19:270:19:30

I've only painted about half of them so, yeah, I've got a few more to do.

0:19:300:19:34

It dries pretty quickly but I've got a second blue layer to put on.

0:19:340:19:38

So, there's going to be two colours.

0:19:380:19:40

I find it quite relaxing.

0:19:400:19:42

In Sarah's guest room, best friend Maxine

0:19:470:19:49

is painting the walls bold blue.

0:19:490:19:51

While in the hallway a runner is fitted.

0:19:510:19:54

It looks good, doesn't it? Thank you so much.

0:19:540:19:57

For her gentlemen's club themed front room,

0:19:570:19:59

the main focus is a second-hand snooker table.

0:19:590:20:02

One, two, three!

0:20:020:20:04

The table cost £275.

0:20:040:20:07

She plans to change the baize top, but there's a problem.

0:20:070:20:11

I started off trying to get hold of orange baize

0:20:110:20:14

and then I think it was out of stock so we went for sage green

0:20:140:20:17

and then the courier's lost it.

0:20:170:20:18

He's got a green cloth that I don't want, that's the problem.

0:20:180:20:21

There is a cloth here but it's the wrong colour and I've

0:20:210:20:23

designed around a whole room around having a sage green snooker table.

0:20:230:20:26

It's a total nightmare because we were hoping for it to

0:20:260:20:29

be in scheme with the rest of the room but it looks like it's

0:20:290:20:32

now going to be green, which is a bit disappointing.

0:20:320:20:35

It's not the only issue with her design.

0:20:350:20:37

None of the glass shelves fit in here,

0:20:370:20:39

because it's an old house and all the walls are different shapes.

0:20:390:20:44

I've reordered the glass and it's going to be turning up

0:20:440:20:47

at midday on Monday which is really late because we finish at two.

0:20:470:20:50

So if the glass doesn't fit, we are going to have empty cupboards

0:20:500:20:54

and no books in here, which is a total nightmare.

0:20:540:20:58

Things are going well with Jordan as the hallway walls are prepped

0:20:580:21:03

and guest room ceiling painted, so he gets on reupholstering

0:21:030:21:08

a second-hand £10 chair with off-cuts of material.

0:21:080:21:11

This is for Rosie's room, I'm going to be making a nice little

0:21:110:21:15

reading corner with this beautiful chair

0:21:150:21:17

and some floating book shelves.

0:21:170:21:19

So you staple the fabric in first, into that hole, which is why

0:21:200:21:25

it's quite tricky because you're basically having to go all

0:21:250:21:28

the way round, then you put the foam, then another piece on top.

0:21:280:21:30

You basically have to place it in place and staple around,

0:21:320:21:36

and then you glue the ribbon trim here, just over all the rough edges,

0:21:360:21:39

so it really finishes it off quite beautifully.

0:21:390:21:43

There you go!

0:21:440:21:45

It's the end of day one.

0:21:510:21:53

It hasn't been perfect, the snooker table is a disaster.

0:21:530:21:58

Half my budget is going in this room

0:21:580:22:00

and it needs to look really good and I'm really disappointed.

0:22:000:22:03

We've got two whole days, it's got some way to go at the moment.

0:22:030:22:07

It's the start of the second day and the final's well under way.

0:22:170:22:21

Jordan's managed to start some of his tile detailing but Sarah's still painting.

0:22:210:22:26

There's still clearly a long, long way to go.

0:22:260:22:28

I'd really like it to feel like it's,

0:22:350:22:37

we're going to nail this, OK? Fab, thanks ever so much.

0:22:370:22:41

For his stripy design in the guest-cum-playroom,

0:22:430:22:46

the walls are fiddly.

0:22:460:22:48

I'm loving the stripes in here, and the ceiling's been painted

0:22:480:22:51

already which looks fantastic, so that's great.

0:22:510:22:54

That's quite time consuming so it's good to get that on the way as well.

0:22:540:22:59

While the decorator carries on,

0:23:010:23:02

Jordan's adding period detail to the front room.

0:23:020:23:05

It says in my brief they would like a panelled wall.

0:23:070:23:09

One there, one in there, one there.

0:23:090:23:13

We're steaming ahead in here now, the dado rail has gone up

0:23:170:23:19

and the fireplace is in, which is really exciting.

0:23:190:23:22

We're going to carry on with the panelling and then move on

0:23:220:23:26

and finish the painting in here hopefully by the end of today.

0:23:260:23:31

After her slow start yesterday,

0:23:320:23:34

Sarah's taking control in her guest room.

0:23:340:23:36

Clean the skirting, make the bed cover,

0:23:360:23:39

check the bed in sideways and finish the door.

0:23:390:23:41

-Boy's room...

-So the desk I'm thinking is in here...

0:23:410:23:45

..and front room.

0:23:450:23:46

How's that paint? Is it?

0:23:460:23:49

Yeah, that's perfect.

0:23:490:23:51

To enhance her gentlemen's club look,

0:23:510:23:54

Sarah plans to create a bespoke industrial light fitting.

0:23:540:23:56

What I was thinking about is making a copper frame, a rectangle,

0:23:560:24:00

a bit like the old-fashioned snooker light but then seeing

0:24:000:24:03

if I can get some bulbs to drop out of it, so six bulbs and I

0:24:030:24:07

know you can get the filament bulbs that look really old-fashioned.

0:24:070:24:11

Basically I've got some copper piping, and what I would like

0:24:130:24:17

to do is feed some wires through and have three bulbs on each side.

0:24:170:24:22

Do you want a solid core cable running through?

0:24:220:24:24

-You tell me.

-Great.

0:24:240:24:27

I need a jigsaw puzzle to get somebody to go and put back together, if that's all right.

0:24:270:24:31

I'm sure this will work,

0:24:310:24:33

how hard can it be to make a bespoke industrial light on a tight budget?

0:24:330:24:37

The fittings and electrician to wire it will cost £200.

0:24:370:24:42

Jordan's also out and about creating something

0:24:420:24:45

personal for his design in the hallway.

0:24:450:24:47

I've got some frames that I'm going to put up in the hallway,

0:24:470:24:51

in quite a formal formation, and I just wanted to do some

0:24:510:24:54

sketches of some sort of local landmarks, really.

0:24:540:24:57

To create something that's special and individual to them

0:24:570:25:01

is really nice.

0:25:010:25:03

These Georgian Liverpool streets owe their existence to the rich

0:25:080:25:12

businessmen of the day.

0:25:120:25:14

Edward Falkner, who bought and developed the square,

0:25:140:25:16

is something of a local legend.

0:25:160:25:18

At the tender age of 28, he became high sheriff of Liverpool.

0:25:180:25:22

And, a decade later, reacting to the imminent threat of French attack,

0:25:220:25:25

it's said that he rallied 1,000 men in just an hour to defend the port.

0:25:250:25:30

As a result, the French got scared off,

0:25:300:25:32

and Falkner became a national hero.

0:25:320:25:35

It's wonderful to potter round these streets and still see the marks of the past.

0:25:400:25:43

This end of Falkner Street still retains its Georgian cobbles

0:25:430:25:47

and what remains of the old Edwardian tram lines that

0:25:470:25:50

once whooshed down the hill to the city.

0:25:500:25:54

Back at the houses on top of the hill, work continues.

0:25:540:25:58

I'm just trying to have a catch up with what's going on here,

0:25:580:26:01

looks like it had one coat in here, so this is looking lovely.

0:26:010:26:04

There's been a second coat on the blue up in the top bedroom,

0:26:040:26:07

that's great, and painted all round the top of the door

0:26:070:26:10

so that looks really cool, that's nice.

0:26:100:26:12

Walls and floor are done in Charlie's bedroom

0:26:120:26:15

and that's the big build going on for that at the moment.

0:26:150:26:17

Charlie's already white bedroom will be repainted for a modern

0:26:170:26:20

look with '60s-style furniture.

0:26:200:26:23

Basically it's that shape...

0:26:230:26:25

We were asked to put in a bespoke bunk bed but with the time

0:26:260:26:30

and the resources we have available, we've bought in a frame so we know

0:26:300:26:34

that it's safe and we don't have to worry about that side of things.

0:26:340:26:37

It's easier to build so obviously we've got the bars in here,

0:26:370:26:41

and this bit is very cabiny inside.

0:26:410:26:43

Sarah originally trained as a chef,

0:26:430:26:46

but now wants to use her creative skills as an interior designer.

0:26:460:26:51

So, Sarah, how much do you really want to win the competition?

0:26:510:26:54

Such a loaded question, isn't it?

0:26:540:26:56

I think you rise to a challenge

0:26:560:26:58

and I think anybody at this stage is going to want to win.

0:26:580:27:02

So whether you win or whether you lose, do you think you'll go on in interior design?

0:27:020:27:06

I can't imagine stopping this, I love it.

0:27:060:27:10

I think just lack of confidence makes you doubt yourself

0:27:100:27:13

sometimes, so that's quite tough sometimes.

0:27:130:27:17

Do you feel a bit more confident now?

0:27:170:27:19

Honestly....

0:27:190:27:20

At Jordan's, he's running the project with precision.

0:27:250:27:29

We're going great guns, everybody's jumped into the sitting room

0:27:290:27:35

so we can get this one pretty much signed off hopefully today

0:27:350:27:38

so that then the guys can move on into the hall

0:27:380:27:41

because we've got a hell of a lot to do there.

0:27:410:27:43

Up in Rosie's room,

0:27:430:27:45

the decoration and wallpapering's pretty much done up there.

0:27:450:27:48

Organised Jordan has pursued various careers.

0:27:500:27:53

He trained as an actor, ran a market stall and has a coffee shop.

0:27:530:27:57

But now he wants to use his artistic skills.

0:27:570:28:00

I really want to win, it is a competition and I'm in it to

0:28:000:28:03

win it, so I've hopefully pulled out all the stops and time will tell.

0:28:030:28:07

You've got this far, do you think whether you win or whether you don't win,

0:28:070:28:10

do you think your future still lies in interior design?

0:28:100:28:14

I hope so, I really hope so, yeah. I think to have come this far,

0:28:140:28:17

I've been through the entire process, essentially.

0:28:170:28:20

So win or lose now, it's definitely the way forward for me, I hope.

0:28:200:28:24

For Sarah's Shaker-style blue guest room, she's getting crafty.

0:28:260:28:29

This is the kind of dye that you normally would put a whole

0:28:290:28:32

load of fabric in a pot with this in it.

0:28:320:28:33

I'm going to use it just like it's a watercolour paint

0:28:330:28:36

and there's four different colours of blue here and I might just

0:28:360:28:40

mix a few together to make, see if I can make one more different one.

0:28:400:28:42

Adding salt to the mix will set the dye so that colours won't run when washed.

0:28:420:28:48

It's lovely to make handmade stuff because you know that there's only

0:28:480:28:51

one of a kind so you're putting something unique

0:28:510:28:54

into the house, and also it is a very cheap way of making something

0:28:540:28:58

hopefully beautiful without having to pay huge amounts of money for it.

0:28:580:29:02

You're not going for fabric paint because with fabric paint

0:29:020:29:05

you'd get quite a different effect, wouldn't you?

0:29:050:29:08

Yeah, I'm trying to make something that's more like a watercolour,

0:29:080:29:11

to get stuff that flows and it's a bit more translucent.

0:29:110:29:13

Yeah, and you get these imperfections,

0:29:130:29:15

-but I think that's what makes it so charming.

-I'm hoping they add to it.

0:29:150:29:19

Sarah's signature vintage look is a world away from the cutting edge

0:29:200:29:24

design these houses were built to.

0:29:240:29:27

When these homes were built in the early 19th century,

0:29:270:29:29

they were at the forefront of luxury and design for housing.

0:29:290:29:33

Land this close to the centre of Liverpool was scarce and expensive,

0:29:330:29:37

so the terrace was the most efficient way of packing them in.

0:29:370:29:40

But Liverpool's success as a port had consequences for property growth.

0:29:410:29:46

As shipping exploded, timber was diverted from house building to ship building,

0:29:460:29:51

and brick became far more commonplace as a building material.

0:29:510:29:54

Cottoning onto this in 1784,

0:29:540:29:57

the government introduced a tax on the total number of bricks used in

0:29:570:30:00

a home, but one step ahead, the wily builders simply increased the size

0:30:000:30:04

of the bricks they used so they didn't have to use quite so many.

0:30:040:30:07

With all the features done in Jordan's front room,

0:30:100:30:13

there's just the mural left to do,

0:30:130:30:14

and in the guest-cum-playroom, the stripy walls are also nearly there.

0:30:140:30:19

I rather like this stripe, it's almost like a Regency stripe, in fact.

0:30:190:30:22

Yes, I'd like to do a little modern twist on that.

0:30:220:30:25

Brilliant, and I can see the modern twist goes even

0:30:250:30:27

further by going over the skirting board.

0:30:270:30:29

Absolutely, it would have been amazing if the room had coving.

0:30:290:30:32

I would've liked to have painted over that as well but unfortunately not.

0:30:320:30:35

Then what happens on the ceiling? You've painted it dark!

0:30:350:30:37

Which is quite an unusual thing. Is there a reason behind that?

0:30:370:30:40

Ceiling heights are so high in here

0:30:400:30:42

and I thought it'd be quite nice to have that feeling a bit more cosy.

0:30:420:30:46

In Rosie's room, his bold purple

0:30:480:30:50

and green scheme is taking shape, so he can start on details.

0:30:500:30:54

Yeah, so I would say the first one,

0:30:540:30:56

if I'm just imagining I'm a nine-year-old girl.

0:30:560:31:00

That's it, I'll step back and you hold, yeah, I think that's lovely.

0:31:000:31:04

-Yeah? Should I go with that then?

-Go with it.

0:31:040:31:07

The floating book shelves will be made from an old book fixed to a wall bracket.

0:31:070:31:11

There's too many heights, isn't it,

0:31:110:31:13

-because you've got the chair arm and then you've got that...

-No, I like it.

0:31:130:31:17

It's the end of day two and Sarah's copper light still needs work.

0:31:230:31:28

The builder's put some holes in here for the flex but I think what

0:31:280:31:31

would be really handy is to try and feed just one line of wire all the

0:31:310:31:36

-way round. Does that sound like you might be able to do that tonight?

-Yeah, I'll take it home.

0:31:360:31:40

I really appreciate it, really appreciate it.

0:31:400:31:42

Things are coming together nicely. The majority of stuff

0:31:420:31:44

and all the painting really needs to get finished tomorrow

0:31:440:31:47

because we can't have all the furnishing moving round, there's so

0:31:470:31:50

many people in the house and so much displaced furniture that we just

0:31:500:31:53

need to have everything finished tomorrow night in terms of painting.

0:31:530:31:57

All the build stuff's done in here now, just got to finish

0:32:010:32:04

painting this fireplace, and then we've got the mural to go up which

0:32:040:32:06

I'm actually going to do last thing because I don't want any scuffs or

0:32:060:32:09

paint on that, but apart from that, touch wood, it's going quite well.

0:32:090:32:13

Day three, and both designers are halfway through the competition, but

0:32:250:32:29

with a hallway and three rooms to complete, there's no time to rest.

0:32:290:32:33

There's one day left.

0:32:330:32:35

With just under £4,500 to spend on so many rooms, it's a huge task.

0:32:350:32:41

It's the start of day three and we've had a really slow, quiet

0:32:410:32:44

start because Tracy and Jim are still in bed.

0:32:440:32:48

Sarah's quietly giving a new look to an old rug with ten pounds of felt.

0:32:480:32:52

So what I've done is I've got little circles of vintage blanket

0:32:520:32:56

and just sewn round the edge of it and stuffed it with sheep's wool.

0:32:560:32:59

So you've got these lovely woolly pebbles.

0:32:590:33:01

I'm going to sew them really tightly together

0:33:010:33:04

so they really feel like there's one solid piece of it

0:33:040:33:06

and then it should be like a lovely stuffed pebble rug.

0:33:060:33:10

It's one element of her ultra-modern design for the boy's bedroom.

0:33:100:33:14

It is one nasty little cycle of painting

0:33:140:33:16

and getting things dirty and then painting again.

0:33:160:33:19

I want to get the whole room whited out completely

0:33:190:33:21

and then plan where we're going to put the stripes.

0:33:210:33:25

The continuous green stripe will be the main colour in the room,

0:33:250:33:28

but Sarah's also dialling up the fun factor.

0:33:280:33:31

This is what I would like to have in my bedroom if I was seven, a little chute.

0:33:310:33:36

Because I know my boys love to race their cars down stuff

0:33:360:33:38

and they particularly love it when they crash.

0:33:380:33:40

So hopefully there'll be a little platform here

0:33:400:33:42

and he can race it down and then the desk is going underneath

0:33:420:33:45

so there'll be a little platform for the cars to arrive down on.

0:33:450:33:48

It's a lot to do.

0:33:480:33:50

In Jordan's hallway, he's turned his attention to the storage.

0:33:520:33:55

It's basically two upstands, this side's going to be split in half exactly,

0:33:550:33:59

this half's going to have a door.

0:33:590:34:01

Pigeon holes there.

0:34:040:34:05

Yeah, so that's just hooks.

0:34:050:34:07

I just want it to look like two cupboard doors.

0:34:070:34:10

The traditional front room is on schedule,

0:34:100:34:12

ready for the dramatic mural to be hung.

0:34:120:34:14

You said the mural is dark from that corner...

0:34:140:34:18

-That's upside down.

-Is it?

-Yeah, it's that.

0:34:180:34:20

Ground, tree, sky.

0:34:220:34:24

-HE LAUGHS

-OK, no probs.

0:34:240:34:27

I'm really excited to see the mural going up, I mean, it's blown

0:34:280:34:32

up to such a scale that you can really see all the brush strokes

0:34:320:34:36

in there, it adds some great texture and it really grounds the space.

0:34:360:34:39

Jordan's £325 mural comes in pre-printed panels.

0:34:390:34:45

It's a trick he used in a previous round to give a period feel.

0:34:450:34:48

And this Georgian home needs some character despite being built around 200 years ago.

0:34:480:34:52

After the Great Fire of London in 1666,

0:34:520:34:56

the whole building industry was completely reformed to make

0:34:560:34:59

sure that such devastation never happened again.

0:34:590:35:01

For instance in 1774 the Building Act brought in recessed wooden sash windows behind brickwork

0:35:010:35:06

to stop spreading fire.

0:35:060:35:08

All homes had to conform to a similar size

0:35:080:35:11

on the outside in proportion to the width of the street and any

0:35:110:35:14

buildings that failed to comply were threatened with demolition.

0:35:140:35:18

Some thought this resulted in elegant uniformity,

0:35:180:35:20

while others thought it stiflingly dull.

0:35:200:35:24

Something neither of our finalists could be accused of in their designs.

0:35:240:35:28

This morning I was upstairs in Sarah's house

0:35:280:35:31

and looking at the guest bedroom and it was really impressive.

0:35:310:35:34

No, you're right, that room is looking absolutely gorgeous,

0:35:340:35:36

she's gone for a really strong, heavy colour

0:35:360:35:38

and that's where we see these designers really adding to

0:35:380:35:41

these houses. She's bringing in a lovely sense of colour and design

0:35:410:35:44

that's really going to transform that space.

0:35:440:35:46

But it's only paint yet, there's a lot of other things going on,

0:35:460:35:49

there's a lot of rushing around those rooms, there's a lot of business going on.

0:35:490:35:53

In Jordan's he's having to pump some character into that house,

0:35:530:35:56

but there's one thing I know - by golly, he's doing it.

0:35:560:35:59

My only concern is, is that right for this client and brief?

0:35:590:36:03

They wanted something quite simple and pared back from what

0:36:030:36:06

I read into it but they are getting the Jordan effect, it would appear.

0:36:060:36:10

It's maybe a bit pushy, maybe a little bit too much

0:36:100:36:13

but there's a lot of other things going on and I'm just quite

0:36:130:36:16

excited about what's going to be produced over the next 24 hours.

0:36:160:36:19

As Jordan's mural goes up in his period front room,

0:36:190:36:24

the tree branches have arrived for his stripy guest-cum-playroom.

0:36:240:36:27

I really wanted to make a feature of the day bed in here,

0:36:270:36:30

so it's going to look really enchanting and sort of whimsical

0:36:300:36:35

and magical for the kids when it's a playroom but also

0:36:350:36:37

against the stripes, the shapes and stuff are going to be beautiful.

0:36:370:36:40

It's something a bit out of the ordinary but it's going to look fab.

0:36:400:36:43

They cost £65 from an online foliage dealer,

0:36:430:36:47

but some jobs he's doing himself.

0:36:470:36:49

I'm just making a couple of cushions for the playroom,

0:36:490:36:53

in the same stripe that I've used for the curtains

0:36:530:36:55

and the mattress cover, so it's going to be a stripy mirage.

0:36:550:37:02

But next door, there's a problem.

0:37:020:37:04

There's a bit of an issue in the lounge

0:37:040:37:07

Why? Oh, God.

0:37:070:37:08

The wrong panel has been hung on the left side of the wall...

0:37:120:37:15

and it's been cut to fit the doorway.

0:37:150:37:17

Have we got the bit that came out of that?

0:37:180:37:20

I haven't got the bit for this because...

0:37:200:37:25

Oh, God.

0:37:250:37:27

Meanwhile, Sarah's front room is coming together.

0:37:280:37:32

I'm sorry to say I think it's got to go a bit higher.

0:37:320:37:36

Nice work, boys.

0:37:380:37:40

And her blue guest room is getting some Shaker-style pegs

0:37:400:37:43

and shelving installed.

0:37:430:37:44

But seeing the bold colour scheme, Sarah makes a bold decision.

0:37:440:37:48

This suddenly looks really like a kid's made it.

0:37:480:37:50

And I know it took seven hours but against this,

0:37:500:37:53

it looks like amateur land, doesn't it?

0:37:530:37:56

Back at Jordan's, he needs a solution for his mural.

0:37:570:38:02

Is that where...? If they were in the right sequence, is that where that piece is?

0:38:020:38:06

If it's the right...that's one, two, that's three.

0:38:060:38:09

What's the join like?

0:38:090:38:10

The worst bit is the bit with the door in, can I see that?

0:38:100:38:13

The mural is in four sections

0:38:130:38:16

and unfortunately we've just started with piece two as opposed to

0:38:160:38:19

piece one, so the doorway has been cut out.

0:38:190:38:21

He has kept that piece so he's just going to have to take it down,

0:38:210:38:24

move it along and there is going to be a join where the doorway was, but, you know what?

0:38:240:38:28

These things happen, it's a busy site, there's things happening

0:38:280:38:33

in all of the rooms all the time, so it's a mishap, it's going to be OK.

0:38:330:38:36

It's the evening of day three. Tomorrow is the final day.

0:38:400:38:45

It does feel like a mountain, I think it's...this is the big

0:38:450:38:49

final push, I can't believe how quickly today has gone.

0:38:490:38:52

Obviously I'd like to be further ahead than I am but we are where we

0:38:520:38:56

are and we've just got to keep going now and get across that finish line.

0:38:560:38:59

If it's just for me and I don't win, then that's fine.

0:38:590:39:02

I feel like I've gone all the way to the end and that's all I ever wanted.

0:39:020:39:06

But there's loads of people going, "Oh, yeah, come on, we want you to win,"

0:39:060:39:09

and my family and my children...

0:39:090:39:11

It's the crucial final day when one of our designers will be

0:39:260:39:29

crowned winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:39:290:39:32

But with just hours to go,

0:39:320:39:35

both designers still have major elements of their design to finish.

0:39:350:39:39

Central to Sarah's modern bedroom design is her continuous

0:39:390:39:43

green stripe across the floor, walls and ceiling.

0:39:430:39:47

I think one line, we find one fat line.

0:39:470:39:50

The line will also continue across the bed and window pane.

0:39:500:39:54

This is the film that, it's got some backing on it at the moment,

0:39:540:39:59

but it basically peels off and goes over this, just a little bit of the

0:39:590:40:04

window to make the green line appear to carry on, right through the room.

0:40:040:40:08

Putting storage into Jordan's hallway is still a way off.

0:40:080:40:13

But the fireplace is being finished in the period front room.

0:40:130:40:16

And the guest-cum-playroom is getting its final stripes.

0:40:160:40:19

I stayed quite late last night to get sort of all the big

0:40:190:40:22

jobs like painting and stuff done, so there's lots of things to

0:40:220:40:25

go up on the walls, I've still got to hang the curtains which

0:40:250:40:27

are quite heavy as well, so that's going to really change the space.

0:40:270:40:30

There's just a lot of fiddly jobs today which can trip you up,

0:40:300:40:33

so I'm trying to keep on top of them all.

0:40:330:40:35

Before I got here this morning I had some strong thoughts

0:40:350:40:38

about which way I was going to go, and I've just completely

0:40:380:40:41

changed my mind, I'm all over the place with this one, it's a toughie.

0:40:410:40:44

I can see that both the designers have put their heart

0:40:440:40:46

and soul into these rooms, I'm seeing colour, pattern,

0:40:460:40:50

clever, ingenious design, beautiful detail.

0:40:500:40:54

I think they're very evenly matched.

0:40:540:40:56

This is the first time experience.

0:40:560:40:59

Possibly not the best time to be doing something for the first time...

0:40:590:41:02

..when one's slightly nervous.

0:41:070:41:09

It's about to come together in here, hopefully. Does it fit, does it fit?

0:41:160:41:20

It fits.

0:41:200:41:22

It's a relief the shelves are here and they actually fit.

0:41:220:41:25

Jordan's bedrooms are nearly complete.

0:41:250:41:28

It's going to be phenomenal.

0:41:280:41:29

And he's onto finishing touches in the period front room.

0:41:290:41:32

Yeah, looks good.

0:41:320:41:34

But work in the hallway goes down to the wire.

0:41:340:41:37

It's insanely crazy.

0:41:370:41:39

We're all right, almost there, three rooms down, one to go.

0:41:390:41:43

-We're up against it!

-Quietly confident? Or a bit nervous?

0:41:460:41:49

Um, I'm feeling pretty good, actually, I think

0:41:490:41:52

it's looking fantastic.

0:41:520:41:53

The green stripe has dried in Sarah's modern bedroom and

0:41:530:41:57

a salvage yard find takes pride of place in the hall to welcome guests.

0:41:570:42:02

After four days, just under £4,500,

0:42:170:42:21

and fierce determination, our designers can do no more.

0:42:210:42:24

The competition means everything to me, to have come this far,

0:42:250:42:30

my eyes are on the prize now, I want to win, I really do.

0:42:300:42:33

I'm so happy with the results. I think, you know,

0:42:330:42:35

it looks fantastic, it's so smart that I just hope they love it.

0:42:350:42:41

I'm very pleased with how the design has rolled out, but for all

0:42:430:42:47

the people who have helped me along the way and all the people who have looked after my children

0:42:470:42:51

or...helped me...

0:42:510:42:53

I'd love to win for them.

0:42:560:42:58

Now it's down to judges Sophie and Daniel to decide who will be

0:43:010:43:05

the winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:43:050:43:08

Jordan is first to be judged.

0:43:080:43:10

Four days ago this Georgian hallway was narrow

0:43:110:43:15

and cluttered with no character to speak of.

0:43:150:43:17

Now he's added practical storage, architectural details on the

0:43:220:43:26

walls, and given it a welcoming feel with a soft green colour scheme.

0:43:260:43:32

As well as his hand-drawn artwork.

0:43:320:43:34

I did not recognise this hallway,

0:43:360:43:39

this is the biggest transformation I've seen.

0:43:390:43:41

Absolutely, and he's just put the character all the way back in

0:43:410:43:45

and not just character but a massive level of practicality.

0:43:450:43:48

And on top of that, this is what I think is rather clever,

0:43:480:43:51

you can sit here and take your shoes off.

0:43:510:43:53

Absolutely ingenious bit of planning as you said,

0:43:530:43:56

and yet this is such a narrow hallway.

0:43:560:43:58

He's still kept it feeling quite spacious.

0:43:580:44:01

I think it really creates a very impressive welcome into this house.

0:44:010:44:05

Absolutely, and those pictures, I've seen Jordan do this before,

0:44:050:44:08

those are tiny images but he's done the big panels around the edge

0:44:080:44:12

and it really makes them look very special.

0:44:120:44:14

The living room was the ultimate blank canvass,

0:44:140:44:18

stripped of all original features with few home comforts.

0:44:180:44:21

Now it's been completely transformed.

0:44:300:44:33

Jordan has added a fire surround to act as a focal point, with

0:44:330:44:35

hand-painted tiles, panelling on the walls, a dramatic mural of a

0:44:350:44:42

countryside scene, and softened the whole scheme with a cornflower blue.

0:44:420:44:47

The first impression in this room is how much Jordan has achieved

0:44:480:44:53

with quite a restrictive budget.

0:44:530:44:54

And this room is very much on brief too, they wanted the heritage

0:44:540:44:58

of the house brought back in, but they also wanted it to look quite

0:44:580:45:01

calm and elegant, so from that point of view I think it's right on brief.

0:45:010:45:04

Although this blue has got a little bit too much energy in it for me

0:45:040:45:08

and if I'm looking at this wall here with this great faux oil painting,

0:45:080:45:13

I'm actually looking at that door in the corner rather than that.

0:45:130:45:17

Yeah, that colour just needed knocking back a bit didn't it?

0:45:170:45:20

Yeah, it just needed to be a bit dirtier.

0:45:200:45:22

Upstairs, the guest bedroom-cum-playroom was

0:45:220:45:26

a simple if cluttered white room.

0:45:260:45:28

Now it's had the full Jordan effect.

0:45:330:45:36

The greyish blue stripes completely surround the room on the walls,

0:45:360:45:39

curtains...and furniture.

0:45:390:45:42

He's painted the ceiling a dark shade to create a cosy feel,

0:45:430:45:47

and has added white tree branches to bring some fairy tale whimsy.

0:45:470:45:51

Wow, very dramatic, isn't it?!

0:45:520:45:53

It's dramatic yet there's a strange sense of peacefulness in this room.

0:45:530:45:58

Because of the colours, he's gone for these nice restful aqua greens.

0:45:580:46:03

And rather ingenious to have the stripes of the fabric, then go into the wall as well

0:46:030:46:07

and coming up again on that curtain on the left-hand side.

0:46:070:46:11

It's created like an illusion. I feel there's lots of visual tricks being played in here.

0:46:110:46:14

These are really fabulous, aren't they?

0:46:140:46:17

They add a magical feel because this is a playroom after all,

0:46:170:46:20

so it's nice that this does feel a little bit of fun but with

0:46:200:46:23

a dual purpose of also being a guest room, you want a grown-up edge too.

0:46:230:46:27

Nine-year-old Rosie had grown out of her bedroom, which was pink

0:46:280:46:32

and dominated by stripped pine units.

0:46:320:46:34

Now it's a room for her to grow into, with a bold

0:46:380:46:41

and fashionable colour scheme, practical but stylish storage,

0:46:410:46:46

as well as some quirky touches.

0:46:460:46:49

You know, this must be every little girl's dream bedroom, surely.

0:46:500:46:56

On the brief they wanted a little girl's room that would last

0:46:560:46:58

a few years and, actually, I think any trendy teenager wouldn't mind a room like this.

0:46:580:47:03

Where he's managed to make it more sophisticated is by using

0:47:030:47:08

this emerald green and I've noticed that even on the little teddy bear,

0:47:080:47:13

and it makes this room feel very sophisticated.

0:47:130:47:15

Part of the judges' decision is based on how much the homeowners like the designs,

0:47:150:47:19

which they're about to see complete for the first time.

0:47:190:47:23

-Wow, that's amazing, and the seat.

-It's good, isn't it?

0:47:240:47:26

That means we don't have to sit on the stairs any more to put our shoes on.

0:47:260:47:30

It doesn't actually look like our hallway.

0:47:300:47:33

-No, it doesn't.

-It is. Come into the front room.

0:47:330:47:36

We've got all these things that weren't in the room before!

0:47:380:47:41

Oh, I just think the colours are perfect, tiles.

0:47:410:47:44

I know, painted them all himself!

0:47:440:47:46

They are beautiful.

0:47:460:47:48

We wanted a cosy, warm room and before it was just dark and cold.

0:47:480:47:52

Oh, it's beautiful. It's girly and grown-up.

0:47:540:47:56

Floating books, they're really clever, aren't they?

0:47:560:48:00

I think she is going to love it because it's hers, isn't it?

0:48:000:48:03

It's going to be really special.

0:48:030:48:05

I hope you like stripes.

0:48:050:48:07

I love stripes, and we have trees in our house.

0:48:070:48:12

They are literally amazing.

0:48:120:48:13

I'm so glad we invited him to come and do it.

0:48:130:48:16

Next to be judged are Sarah's designs.

0:48:210:48:24

Four days ago this hallway was grand but plain,

0:48:250:48:28

lacking the sophistication the homeowners craved.

0:48:280:48:32

Now the dark grey lower wall is practical, while the lighter

0:48:350:48:38

tone above creates a sense of space, the stair runner has been updated,

0:48:380:48:44

and the side table, prints and statue bring some designer touches.

0:48:440:48:48

This was a beautiful grand Georgian hallway to begin with.

0:48:500:48:53

I like the way Sarah has just expanded on the theme.

0:48:530:48:56

She's kept that simplicity and addressed the original

0:48:560:48:59

architecture by just having these very broad stripes deepening

0:48:590:49:04

as it goes down to work better with this rather bright floor.

0:49:040:49:08

Here what she's done is she's created a focal point

0:49:080:49:11

in the hallway with the demilune

0:49:110:49:13

and the painting there and then dear Mary here on the right.

0:49:130:49:16

There's just some quirky bits of interest on something that's usually an ordinary thoroughfare.

0:49:160:49:22

The front room was an unused dining room which the owners wanted to be part work space, part sitting room.

0:49:220:49:28

Sarah has transformed it with a gentlemen's club theme.

0:49:400:49:43

She's added a snooker table with detachable top,

0:49:450:49:48

and traditional furniture, while giving the room edge with

0:49:480:49:52

floating glass shelves and bespoke copper light.

0:49:520:49:56

This is fun.

0:49:560:49:58

Having had the calm of the hallway

0:49:580:50:00

and coming in to the excitement of this, makes it quite special.

0:50:000:50:03

Well, this room had no purpose, and what Sarah has managed to do

0:50:030:50:07

is give this room a look, a games room, a gentlemen's club room.

0:50:070:50:11

It's a party room in which they can come and work every now and again.

0:50:110:50:16

But I do feel that maybe a little bit themed, you know,

0:50:160:50:19

like a gastro pub, over-staged rather than being real.

0:50:190:50:24

Although, you can look at some of the details.

0:50:240:50:26

For example, over there, have you seen?

0:50:260:50:29

Brass lion heads with rings and then using them for the cues, love it!

0:50:290:50:34

For design details, it totally is top marks, isn't it?

0:50:340:50:37

I'm just seeing all her quirky little ideas like this

0:50:370:50:39

lighting that she came up with on a shoestring.

0:50:390:50:42

Absolutely brilliant.

0:50:420:50:44

Upstairs, the white box of a guest room needed

0:50:440:50:46

so much more personality.

0:50:460:50:48

Now its bold blue colour scheme and vintage feel is classic Sarah.

0:50:550:50:59

She's kept the floor and ceiling white, added Shaker-style pegs

0:51:000:51:04

and shelving, and bought in a colourful bedspread.

0:51:040:51:07

This is the guest bedroom

0:51:080:51:10

and I think if you were coming to stay for a weekend you'd feel

0:51:100:51:13

really made at home in a room like this, wouldn't you?

0:51:130:51:15

Absolutely, it's both very masculine and feminine,

0:51:150:51:18

and the way she's done that is by having a light floor,

0:51:180:51:21

pale ceiling that's been brought down to the shelf level, and then

0:51:210:51:24

just a stripe of that rich blue in the room, and she's pulled it off.

0:51:240:51:28

And what I'm loving is this shelf and peg rail, I think this is

0:51:280:51:31

a great idea for spare rooms, you don't want to clog up a room

0:51:310:51:34

with unnecessary wardrobes and chest of drawers. That is a really clever idea.

0:51:340:51:39

Nine-year-old Charlie's bedroom was plain and functional,

0:51:390:51:42

but lacked personality.

0:51:420:51:43

Sarah's gone all-out with a modern, original scheme,

0:51:490:51:53

with white walls and a green stripe across the entire room.

0:51:530:51:58

She's built a playful car slide into the wall,

0:51:580:52:01

made a cabin bed from basic flat pack furniture,

0:52:010:52:03

and added more colour with a handmade bobble rug.

0:52:030:52:07

Oh, it's so funky, isn't it?

0:52:080:52:11

What I'm liking about that is that Sarah is proving to us

0:52:110:52:15

that she doesn't do just vintage,

0:52:150:52:16

what she's touched on here is late '60s psychedelia design,

0:52:160:52:21

classic is the green stripe that goes through the room.

0:52:210:52:24

What I particularly love about it is the way the green goes over

0:52:240:52:27

the old Georgian mouldings in the sash window with the window film and just makes the space look so modern.

0:52:270:52:32

And she's proven that she can do a boy's bedroom.

0:52:320:52:35

I know that because I'd love one of these. Have you seen it?

0:52:350:52:38

Your new hall...

0:52:430:52:45

There's Mary, oh, my goodness!

0:52:460:52:49

Oh, my God.

0:52:510:52:53

Oh, what a clever, clever woman.

0:52:550:52:58

She's brought it all together, it is beautiful,

0:52:580:53:03

the old industrial really works with the traditional.

0:53:030:53:05

It's just us, isn't it?

0:53:050:53:07

Ta-da!

0:53:070:53:09

Oh, my goodness, this is incredible!

0:53:100:53:12

Little cave to crawl into there.

0:53:120:53:14

Isn't that just wonderful?

0:53:140:53:16

-Fantastic.

-I love it.

0:53:160:53:18

Oh, my goodness!

0:53:180:53:22

-It is fantastic!

-I'm lost for words, actually.

0:53:220:53:26

It's wonderful!

0:53:260:53:29

It's now a long wait for our designers, while the judges

0:53:290:53:33

decide who deserves to be named champion of the competition.

0:53:330:53:38

So, you two, it's the big one.

0:53:380:53:40

Let's start with Sarah.

0:53:400:53:42

Now you really wanted her to show her versatility, has she done that?

0:53:420:53:46

Absolutely, with two bedrooms beside each other, cheek by jowl

0:53:460:53:50

but completely different.

0:53:500:53:53

One really poppy and modern,

0:53:530:53:54

and the other with a very sort of solid, homely feel to it.

0:53:540:53:58

She's come through as somebody who designs vintage homewares.

0:53:580:54:01

She does that look very, very well but we're looking for her to

0:54:010:54:04

push the boundaries and I think she's shown that throughout

0:54:040:54:06

this competition, but particularly this week.

0:54:060:54:09

You could be quite afraid dealing with a house like that,

0:54:090:54:11

it's the perfect Georgian house so you'd honour it

0:54:110:54:14

and give it respect, but actually you just want to be a little

0:54:140:54:17

bit rock and roll with it too, and she did.

0:54:170:54:20

How about Jordan?

0:54:200:54:21

His rooms definitely make you go "Wow" when you walk in. What we were

0:54:210:54:24

looking for with him was for him to show that he can add some practical

0:54:240:54:27

considerations, really thinking about how people live in and use

0:54:270:54:30

the space, and he's really proved that he's taken that on board.

0:54:300:54:33

He's a showman, he's got great humour but he also

0:54:330:54:37

thinks about applying them to the needs of the people who live there.

0:54:370:54:40

This lovely family wanted to actually feel that they do live

0:54:400:54:44

in a Georgian house and he put all that character back, and more.

0:54:440:54:49

He put in style too.

0:54:490:54:50

Jordan's rooms are always innovative and daring and something new,

0:54:500:54:54

and there's always something in his schemes that I've never seen before.

0:54:540:54:57

Which is excellent.

0:54:570:54:58

How do you think the pair have evolved over the series?

0:54:580:55:01

Oh, it's been absolutely an amazing progression from their first

0:55:010:55:05

room to now practically doing a whole house.

0:55:050:55:08

Absolutely. Blimey, I really, really don't envy you two.

0:55:080:55:12

You've got quite a task.

0:55:120:55:15

24 amateur designers competed in eight heats.

0:55:170:55:20

And after quarterfinals and a semi, we were left with two of the best.

0:55:220:55:29

Now just one can win.

0:55:310:55:32

Well, you two, a big ask for the final.

0:55:340:55:37

Four rooms, you both must be exhausted.

0:55:370:55:41

We have so enjoyed watching your progress,

0:55:410:55:46

and if you carry on at this rate, you're without a doubt going

0:55:460:55:49

to have really successful careers in design.

0:55:490:55:51

I hope you come and join us lot as interior designers,

0:55:510:55:55

you both have a position in the professional world.

0:55:550:55:58

But these two have deliberated very long and hard,

0:55:580:56:02

and they've come to their decision.

0:56:020:56:05

And the winner...

0:56:050:56:07

..of the Great Interior Design Challenge is...

0:56:080:56:11

..Sarah.

0:56:140:56:15

-Well done, well done.

-APPLAUSE

0:56:180:56:21

Well deserved.

0:56:210:56:23

Thank you!

0:56:270:56:28

Aww!

0:56:280:56:29

-Thank you!

-Thank you.

0:56:290:56:31

I'm really proud of myself that I've never done this before and I can do it and I really enjoy it.

0:56:330:56:40

Every winner has to have a trophy and this is handmade...

0:56:400:56:43

It's handmade, I love it!

0:56:430:56:45

It's right up my street, thank you, that is amazing,

0:56:450:56:48

I'm totally overwhelmed.

0:56:480:56:50

I hope that this is just the beginning of something amazing.

0:56:500:56:53

Obviously I was disappointed, I've said all along that

0:56:530:56:56

I was in it to win it, but I've come as far as you can go in the

0:56:560:57:00

competition and at the end of the day there's two fantastic houses

0:57:000:57:04

there and the families are going to enjoy living in them, so I'm

0:57:040:57:08

sure I'm going to move on within this industry and make a name for myself.

0:57:080:57:13

Thank you so much, it really means a lot. Thank you.

0:57:130:57:16

That was a very, very difficult, almost emotional decision to be made.

0:57:210:57:26

Because I love them both and it was a hair's breadth, really.

0:57:260:57:32

-I hope you like it.

-What have you done to our lovely home?

0:57:320:57:35

Don't say that, I hope you like it!

0:57:350:57:36

We've found two of the most talented designers in the country, but

0:57:360:57:40

Sarah, she did have that something special at the end of the day.

0:57:400:57:43

I have just so enjoyed learning how to do this

0:57:430:57:46

and I think it'll be a fantastic opportunity that's waiting for me.

0:57:460:57:51

The British home is an astonishing thing, comes in all shapes

0:58:000:58:03

and sizes and all styles from Georgian to Brutalist,

0:58:030:58:06

from thatched cottage to tower block.

0:58:060:58:09

It's as varied as the people who live inside, but one thing's been

0:58:090:58:11

consistent throughout this series - the sheer creativity our designers

0:58:110:58:15

have shown, marrying this history with the sharpest of modern designs.

0:58:150:58:19

And that's the most astonishing thing of all about the British

0:58:190:58:22

home, the job is never done, it's continually being reinvented.
