In Britain we have an amazing array of places we call home,

0:00:030:00:07

from thatched cottages and conversions

0:00:070:00:09

to terraced housing and tower blocks.

0:00:090:00:11

But when it comes to interior design,

0:00:110:00:14

we don't always make the best of the rooms we live in.

0:00:140:00:17

So, we asked 24 amateur interior designers

0:00:170:00:19

to show us how it should be done.

0:00:190:00:22

Let's try it.

0:00:220:00:24

We've got 15 minutes and I'm still painting.

0:00:240:00:28

I hope they'll like it, I think they will like it.

0:00:280:00:30

We travelled across the country and through the ages

0:00:300:00:33

to Victorian avenues, Art Deco cul-de-sacs, and Regency squares.

0:00:330:00:39

Each time the would-be designers took on similar rooms

0:00:400:00:43

in neighbouring homes.

0:00:430:00:45

And after eight heats, we've picked the best to go through

0:00:450:00:48

to the quarterfinals.

0:00:480:00:50

Judging them are designer and President Elect

0:00:500:00:53

of the British Institute of Interior Design, Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:530:00:57

Our quarter finalists need to show

0:00:570:00:59

they've got an extensive repertoire and not just have one look.

0:00:590:01:03

..and interior stylist and magazine journalist Sophie Robinson.

0:01:030:01:06

The designers have already had one shot at this

0:01:060:01:09

so we'll be looking at a marked improvement.

0:01:090:01:12

Across our two quarterfinal programmes,

0:01:120:01:14

only four can go through to the next stage of the competition.

0:01:140:01:17

# Dun-dun-dun! #

0:01:170:01:19

This time our amateur designers are giving a new look

0:01:260:01:29

to a very old room in these thatched cottages in rural Dorset.

0:01:290:01:33

Four previous winners have already shown they have talent for design.

0:01:330:01:37

-Sarah, congratulations!

-THEY CLAP

0:01:370:01:40

-Jordan.

-THEY CLAP

0:01:400:01:42

-Johnny.

-Well done, darling.

0:01:420:01:44

Charmaine.

0:01:440:01:46

With two semifinal places at stake

0:01:460:01:48

they must show they've learned lessons working with their

0:01:480:01:51

first ever client, as they take on country cottage sitting rooms.

0:01:510:01:55

I'm panicking now.

0:01:550:01:57

Great little touch, even if I say so myself.

0:01:570:01:59

I think we know what we need to do.

0:01:590:02:01

Could be disastrous. I don't know what else to say.

0:02:010:02:04

I'm just concerned she might have bitten off more than she can chew.

0:02:040:02:07

If they don't like it, this is not a winning design.

0:02:070:02:10

Two of you rose beyond and the two designers going through are...

0:02:100:02:15

These thatched cottages are an idyllic vision of old England.

0:02:220:02:26

This is Milton Abbas in Dorset - 36 perfect looking little cottages

0:02:260:02:31

that look like they could have been built in Tudor times.

0:02:310:02:33

In fact, they're Georgian, built here by the local landowner in 1779.

0:02:330:02:38

Three years earlier in 1776, Lord Milton built this grand house

0:02:400:02:45

but he decided that the old village spoilt his view

0:02:450:02:48

and ordered that it be torn down.

0:02:480:02:50

The locals put up a good fight, even refusing to leave their homes.

0:02:500:02:53

But they were no match for the underhand tactics of Lord Milton.

0:02:530:02:57

He even flushed out one tenacious tenant with effluent pond water.

0:02:570:03:00

The estate workers had to live somewhere though,

0:03:060:03:09

so he built an entire new village in a valley out of sight.

0:03:090:03:12

His quest for the perfect estate led him to employ

0:03:120:03:15

the leading experts of the day -

0:03:150:03:17

William Chambers, architect of London's Somerset House,

0:03:170:03:20

and Lancelot Capability Brown, landscaper of Kew Gardens -

0:03:200:03:23

to create this model village.

0:03:230:03:25

Now four thatched cottages in this village are getting

0:03:320:03:35

a new look living room from our quarterfinalists.

0:03:350:03:38

Johnny won his heat with a modernist inspired design in a 1930s semi.

0:03:410:03:45

Now we're into the quarterfinal,

0:03:470:03:49

the competition's going to be a bit stronger.

0:03:490:03:51

I'm not nervous, I just want to get in there and get cracking.

0:03:510:03:54

Sarah pulled off a traditional design with a Scandinavian feel

0:03:540:03:58

for an Edwardian bedroom.

0:03:580:04:00

I feel I'm quite different to the other competitors.

0:04:010:04:04

I'm a mum who has a business who's enjoying this.

0:04:040:04:08

I'm just going to give it my best shot and see how I get on.

0:04:080:04:11

Charmaine won her place with a '50s themed

0:04:130:04:16

sun room in an Art Deco house.

0:04:160:04:18

So thrilled, I thought I might not be here but I'm so excited.

0:04:200:04:24

I'm at the stage now where I feel like that's it, I'm in it to win it.

0:04:240:04:28

And Jordan brought a touch of Hollywood glamour

0:04:280:04:32

to a Regency town house.

0:04:320:04:34

I can't wait to get started on the competition

0:04:340:04:36

and, yeah, just get cracking on the room really.

0:04:360:04:39

It's such a beautiful setting and the competition is on.

0:04:390:04:42

Our first front room

0:04:440:04:46

belongs to local history enthusiasts John and Peggy.

0:04:460:04:50

The house was built in 1773-ish.

0:04:500:04:53

It had some substantial changes to it in the early 19th century

0:04:530:04:58

which turned into a tailor's shop, hence the large bay window.

0:04:580:05:03

Keeping the traditional style is of particular importance to them

0:05:030:05:06

as, every two years,

0:05:060:05:09

local residents of Milton Abbas throw a street festival

0:05:090:05:12

and Peggy and John's living room is a main attraction.

0:05:120:05:15

Peggy sits down here and she's got a spinning wheel

0:05:150:05:17

and she also does a bit of sewing.

0:05:170:05:19

One of the things about having the place decorated

0:05:190:05:22

is we want to keep it looking traditional.

0:05:220:05:27

Before the designers can get started,

0:05:280:05:30

judges Sophie and Daniel want to assess the potential of each room.

0:05:300:05:34

-This is so charming.

-It's magic, isn't it?

0:05:370:05:41

I just love the fact that everywhere I look, there's antiques.

0:05:410:05:44

I'm noticing there's a few pieces of original furniture

0:05:440:05:47

in this room as well.

0:05:470:05:49

At least the furniture that you would have seen in a room like this.

0:05:490:05:52

Here we have a settle,

0:05:520:05:54

which is sort of an 18th century sofa, and also we have...

0:05:540:05:58

Probably a bit later, but there's a lovely rocking chair here as well.

0:05:580:06:01

In a historical context there is a design challenge,

0:06:010:06:04

and that is addressing the modern needs

0:06:040:06:07

in a beautiful space like this.

0:06:070:06:09

They love the period style. They love authentic materials.

0:06:090:06:12

They don't want to see anything that's fake or reproduction

0:06:120:06:16

so our designers are going to really, really need

0:06:160:06:19

to have done their homework.

0:06:190:06:21

And the designer charged with bringing some rustic charm

0:06:220:06:26

to this cottage is 44-year-old painter and decorator Johnny.

0:06:260:06:30

He may have shown his design skills

0:06:320:06:34

with an ingenious cabinet unit in his heat,

0:06:340:06:36

but he still needs to prove he can pull together a whole scheme.

0:06:360:06:40

Each quarterfinalist has been given a week to come up with their designs

0:06:410:06:45

but this is their first meeting with the homeowners.

0:06:450:06:48

I've brought in a mood board

0:06:490:06:51

just to show you what I'd like to try and achieve for you.

0:06:510:06:54

You wanted some shelving so I've come up with this style here

0:06:560:06:59

which is more of a free standing shelf

0:06:590:07:02

-which will sit in the alcove at the side of the fire there.

-Yeah.

0:07:020:07:06

This is the fabric I chose for your curtains.

0:07:060:07:09

It's silk screen print on there.

0:07:090:07:11

Is it based upon design that would have been...

0:07:110:07:13

Yes, it is, it's like a William Morris print,

0:07:130:07:16

so we're going back to that.

0:07:160:07:19

I noticed you wanted to keep the focal point around the fireplace.

0:07:190:07:23

I want to propose more of a natural stone on there, on top of that.

0:07:230:07:28

I have a lovely quartz... white quartz stone.

0:07:280:07:32

-I know Peggy doesn't like that.

-THEY LAUGH

0:07:320:07:35

I can see that!

0:07:350:07:38

-To me it looks a bit "in your face".

-Is it going to destroy your scheme?

0:07:380:07:42

-No, it will not.

-Are you sure?

-No, not at all, it won't.

-Good.

0:07:420:07:46

The stone quartz might have gone but Johnny's design has plenty of other

0:07:460:07:50

natural materials to deliver the rustic style.

0:07:500:07:53

When we show this room every two years to the public,

0:07:530:07:56

the first thing we have to do with this radiator

0:07:560:07:58

-is cover it over with old sacks.

-Leave it with me then.

0:07:580:08:01

I'll see what we can do to conceal that lovely...

0:08:010:08:05

-..white radiator.

-THEY LAUGH

0:08:060:08:10

I was astonished at how sensitive he'd been to the brief.

0:08:120:08:15

And we know Johnny.

0:08:150:08:17

He likes modern, he likes retro, he likes quite masculine design.

0:08:170:08:21

I thought he was so sensitive to their requests

0:08:210:08:25

and even when he pulled out the white granite tile cladding,

0:08:250:08:28

he moved on away from it very quickly.

0:08:280:08:30

He knew from their reaction that it wasn't the right thing to push.

0:08:300:08:33

There was one moment of insecurity that I picked up on

0:08:330:08:36

and that's when John suggested to Johnny

0:08:360:08:38

about having a radiator cover of some form.

0:08:380:08:41

I just would hate to see any MDF fretwork monstrosity over there,

0:08:410:08:44

that'd be really wrong.

0:08:440:08:46

So he's going to have to think of something more original than that.

0:08:460:08:49

Like all the designers Johnny now has £1,000 pounds, a builder

0:08:510:08:55

and 48 hours spread over three days to bring a natural touch

0:08:550:08:58

to this historical room.

0:08:580:09:00

I would really love to incorporate this natural wood.

0:09:000:09:03

We've got enough of this timber

0:09:030:09:05

and I think he's got a wood shed that he said we could raid as well.

0:09:050:09:07

-I can't wait to get up there.

-I know. See what he's got.

0:09:070:09:10

First he's going in search of the right piece of wood.

0:09:100:09:13

This is a lovely little Aladdin's cave up here, isn't it?

0:09:130:09:18

The next front room belongs to Lars and Monique

0:09:210:09:24

and their two-year-old son Viggo.

0:09:240:09:26

With Viggo's arrival,

0:09:290:09:31

we've changed the front room into an area

0:09:310:09:34

where you've got a lot of floor space

0:09:340:09:36

that he could play on when he was a little baby.

0:09:360:09:39

Now that he's bigger we can actually go back and make it into a...

0:09:390:09:42

-An adult room, cosy.

-..more of a cottagey, cosy room.

0:09:420:09:46

Oh, lovely. What an elegant room. Nicely restored.

0:09:460:09:52

The first thing that hits you, isn't it? The quality of this restoration.

0:09:520:09:55

Yes. What's ingenious is actually,

0:09:550:09:57

they've left exposed, at the bottom, the original flint footings

0:09:570:10:02

and plastered over what's called the cob,

0:10:020:10:05

which is at the top which is the rubbish

0:10:050:10:07

which they used to make the walls up.

0:10:070:10:10

Old beams, which would have actually come from the original village,

0:10:100:10:13

cos the village was moved,

0:10:130:10:15

and they would have taken anything that they could,

0:10:150:10:18

cos it was of value, and re-used it in these new buildings.

0:10:180:10:21

So these beams are actually older than the house.

0:10:210:10:23

Furnishing-wise it's just looking a little drab.

0:10:230:10:26

Monique and Lars, they like that Scandinavian look

0:10:260:10:29

which is quite cool in terms of colours,

0:10:290:10:31

but it's a lot about bringing in texture

0:10:310:10:34

and rustic finishes, like wood and stone.

0:10:340:10:38

But our designer's going to have to make it feel warm and homely too.

0:10:380:10:41

Making an impact in a room that already looks well designed

0:10:410:10:44

could prove challenging for our next quarterfinalist.

0:10:440:10:48

Asked to balance a country look with a modern influence

0:10:480:10:51

is vintage homewares designer, Sarah.

0:10:510:10:54

During the heat she impressed with her craft skills.

0:10:540:10:57

This time the judges want to see versatility

0:10:570:11:00

with some contemporary touches.

0:11:000:11:02

I've put together a little board for you with some ideas.

0:11:040:11:08

So I have chosen, as the natural theme...

0:11:080:11:11

I'm looking at very old, earthy tones,

0:11:110:11:14

beautiful warm colours with perhaps a little bit of textured linen

0:11:140:11:17

and that sort of thing to add some highlights to it.

0:11:170:11:20

We have the sofa and a collection of linens and tweed materials

0:11:200:11:24

to make almost like a patchwork with the cushions.

0:11:240:11:28

So the front of the cushions are all beautiful, natural tweedy colours

0:11:280:11:32

and then the backs of them we've done with linen fabric.

0:11:320:11:35

It will be quite bold but it will give you more than one look.

0:11:350:11:39

An important thing for me is to try and get some

0:11:390:11:41

light in here at, say, at night time when we have closed the curtains.

0:11:410:11:45

I have three of these bulbs to hang here but I also have two more

0:11:450:11:48

that I've had wired literally as a plug and a flex and a wire.

0:11:480:11:52

And I have got some silver birch

0:11:520:11:55

that I've brought with me that I'd like to make a standard lamp out of.

0:11:550:11:58

Sarah's attempting to balance modern elements with a woodland theme

0:11:580:12:02

and can't resist her signature tool.

0:12:020:12:05

I have used them before and I really love them

0:12:050:12:08

but I have found some paint rollers that you can apply to the wall.

0:12:080:12:12

They're just brilliant because they work on uneven surfaces.

0:12:120:12:15

-Will it be the woodland animals?

-Yes, my plan is to just do it here.

0:12:150:12:18

I think the room would be quite cluttered

0:12:180:12:20

if it was all the way round. So I think there, behind the sofa.

0:12:200:12:24

I'm quite excited about that. The...what did you call it?

0:12:240:12:28

It's a paint roller.

0:12:280:12:30

I used it in the last house I did and I nearly didn't bring it along

0:12:300:12:33

cos I don't want to be this kind of one-trick pony

0:12:330:12:35

but I think it's so good, given what you've asked for,

0:12:350:12:38

with the natural element of your brief.

0:12:380:12:40

I think it's too good to leave behind.

0:12:400:12:42

She's working to brief but she's putting her style on it as well.

0:12:420:12:45

You'll recognise that as being a Sarah design.

0:12:450:12:47

But I've got to admit, my eyebrows were certainly raised

0:12:470:12:50

when she mentioned that she was bringing out the roller stencil.

0:12:500:12:54

She does need to prove that she can be versatile

0:12:540:12:57

to different looks and styles.

0:12:570:12:59

-It'll remind you straightaway.

-Oh, putty. Linseed oil, yeah.

0:13:040:13:08

Our third cottage, a few doors along,

0:13:120:13:14

was previously used by Corrine and her family as a holiday home.

0:13:140:13:18

We were using the house just as a holiday home

0:13:180:13:21

so it didn't really, really matter what it looked like.

0:13:210:13:23

But after relocating permanently to the cottage 18 months ago,

0:13:230:13:28

Corrine and her four children have found themselves

0:13:280:13:30

competing for space in the living room.

0:13:300:13:32

The children play there a lot.

0:13:320:13:34

They've got their games out so if we could have some storage,

0:13:340:13:38

we can put the toys away.

0:13:380:13:40

I'd like the room to work for the whole family.

0:13:400:13:43

The beauty of the room is the architectural details

0:13:440:13:47

are still here, it hasn't been spoilt.

0:13:470:13:50

Including a bread oven.

0:13:500:13:53

You'd set a fire on inside, get the whole brickwork around it

0:13:530:13:58

very, very hot, then you take all the cinders out

0:13:580:14:02

and put the dough in and the radiating heat will cook the dough.

0:14:020:14:06

And that was the first example of a modern day oven.

0:14:060:14:09

It's a really interesting brief, this one, and it's very common.

0:14:090:14:12

People want their rooms to feel light and airy but also warm and cosy.

0:14:120:14:16

So that storage clearly needs to go, doesn't it?

0:14:160:14:19

It's very dated, flat-packed furniture.

0:14:190:14:21

I'd like to see something much more considered in there

0:14:210:14:23

with the cosiness and the soft furnishings.

0:14:230:14:26

We want to see lots of texture,

0:14:260:14:28

wools and linens sitting next to each other.

0:14:280:14:30

I think this is an opportunity to mix lots of patterns,

0:14:300:14:33

see checks and plaids and the tartans all mixed together

0:14:330:14:35

and build up the look that way,

0:14:350:14:37

so the room feels really inviting and soft and warm and cosy.

0:14:370:14:41

Aiming to transform this plain space into a functioning family

0:14:430:14:46

living room is 29-year-old design student Charmaine.

0:14:460:14:50

After her well-managed,

0:14:510:14:53

practical '50s office design in her first heat,

0:14:530:14:57

the judges now want to see a more adventurous scheme from her.

0:14:570:15:00

So, I just put together a quick concept board

0:15:000:15:02

just to show you first.

0:15:020:15:05

I'm going to be building you some bespoke cabinets on this wall

0:15:050:15:09

just here, so we've got some cupboards for storage

0:15:090:15:12

and some lovely shelving.

0:15:120:15:15

I would actually have preferred the shelf...

0:15:150:15:18

-to be on this wall and around the doors.

-Mm-hmm.

0:15:180:15:23

As a second option I have done just that.

0:15:230:15:27

So, similar thing - cupboards at the bottom, shelving at the top

0:15:270:15:32

and on this wall here, as opposed to here.

0:15:320:15:34

Ultimately, I want to make you happy

0:15:340:15:36

so if you would prefer it to be on this wall then I'm happy to do that.

0:15:360:15:41

As well as the shelving I'm planning to extend the window seat.

0:15:410:15:43

-Oh, lovely.

-So it's a little bit bigger, more comfortable to sit on.

0:15:430:15:47

I'll put a lovely tartan seat pad, again with some cushions,

0:15:470:15:50

so you can sit in the window, read a book, drink a coffee.

0:15:500:15:53

-I think it's a really good idea, actually.

-Excellent.

0:15:530:15:55

Along with her practical cupboards and seating,

0:15:550:15:58

she's chosen an autumnal colour scheme.

0:15:580:16:00

I'm going to be bringing the colour into the room

0:16:000:16:02

with the soft furnishings so we're going to have colour,

0:16:020:16:05

-texture in the linens.

-Very much like what...

-What you've asked.

0:16:050:16:08

-Yes. What I've asked.

-Brilliant! I'm very pleased. It will be great.

0:16:080:16:13

I think she really helped Corrine visualise the room

0:16:130:16:16

and Corrine was clearly very unconfident

0:16:160:16:18

about design and how it's all going to work.

0:16:180:16:20

She did keep saying, "It's going to be fabulous!"

0:16:200:16:23

"You will love it!" But I wanted her to say why.

0:16:230:16:27

Because I was feeling that it was perhaps a little safe.

0:16:270:16:31

HE SHUDDERS

0:16:340:16:36

Steve, you are not scared of spiders? SHE LAUGHS

0:16:360:16:40

-Are you serious?

-Seriously.

-Oh, no.

0:16:400:16:43

Our final front room belongs to Diana.

0:16:460:16:48

She's owned her home for 28 years

0:16:480:16:51

and lives with son Steve and dog Lulu.

0:16:510:16:53

I want it re-designed because I think a lot of the furniture's

0:16:550:16:59

too big and I'd like a change of colour.

0:16:590:17:02

And so long as it's warm and comfortable and bright,

0:17:020:17:05

that's what I would like.

0:17:050:17:08

Diana is keen to hold on to the authentic feel of the cottage.

0:17:080:17:11

As much as I like modern design, I wouldn't like it in this house.

0:17:110:17:15

If it was a suitable house, a modern design could be lovely

0:17:150:17:18

but it would look ridiculous here, wouldn't it?

0:17:180:17:21

-Crikey, what a lot of stuff!

-Yeah. It's a very cosy room, isn't it?

0:17:240:17:28

It's about people who are proud of living in a cottage

0:17:280:17:31

and they want to celebrate that.

0:17:310:17:33

They reflect on the past a lot.

0:17:330:17:35

For example, we've got lots of horse brasses hanging over on the beam,

0:17:350:17:39

old cooking utensils hung up around the fireplace,

0:17:390:17:42

sort of indicating what this was used for,

0:17:420:17:44

but they're never going to be used.

0:17:440:17:47

What I would like to see with the designer

0:17:470:17:49

is how they can take all this

0:17:490:17:51

and turn it into something new and fresh.

0:17:510:17:54

The other big challenge I see for a designer in this room

0:17:540:17:57

is making sense of the layout.

0:17:570:18:00

There's clearly too many chairs in here, you can hardly move.

0:18:000:18:03

We've got lots of different finishes.

0:18:030:18:04

There's different woods in here, different fabrics -

0:18:040:18:07

we've got mustard Dralon, leather and then quite a wacky bedspread.

0:18:070:18:10

All that is doing is just cluttering up the eye

0:18:100:18:14

and I think rule of thumb is maximum of two finishes

0:18:140:18:17

for soft furnishings, especially in a room of this size.

0:18:170:18:20

It would just help just visually calm it all down.

0:18:200:18:23

Taking on Diana's brief for a colourful cosy cottage

0:18:230:18:27

is 30-year-old ex-actor Jordan from London.

0:18:270:18:30

In his heat he created an elegant design

0:18:320:18:34

with a restrained grey colour scheme.

0:18:340:18:37

This time the brief is to brighten up the room,

0:18:370:18:39

so Jordan must prove he can work with bold colours.

0:18:390:18:42

Don't be frightened by the colour initially.

0:18:420:18:45

We've got this fabric here.

0:18:460:18:48

-You said you didn't like chintzy things.

-Not really, no.

0:18:480:18:51

I avoided that and went for a bigger floral

0:18:510:18:53

which I think is going to be really bright and cheerful.

0:18:530:18:56

Yes. So what are these colours here?

0:18:560:18:59

These are some of the colours that I've picked out from the fabric

0:18:590:19:02

that are going to feature in areas within the room,

0:19:020:19:04

but nothing too scary.

0:19:040:19:06

It's going to be bright and cheerful and hopefully you'll love it.

0:19:060:19:10

I'll move this one and you can see

0:19:100:19:12

the other one with a couple of my sketches.

0:19:120:19:14

-You've got a rocking chair that's going to be coming in.

-OK.

0:19:140:19:18

It's going to be a nice place to sit and read by the fire hopefully.

0:19:180:19:21

I just don't want the fabric to overwhelm the room, that's all.

0:19:210:19:24

The only pattern that's going to be coming in is on the curtains.

0:19:240:19:28

There's quite a lot of curtains, though, isn't there?

0:19:280:19:30

There is. But the room can... I think it's going to work well.

0:19:300:19:34

I think it can take...

0:19:340:19:36

It's the colour and the cheerfulness that I wanted to bring in.

0:19:360:19:39

Hopefully it's going to be a room that you're going to come into

0:19:390:19:41

and smile and enjoy spending time in. Not too scary?

0:19:410:19:44

Well, no, not too scary, no.

0:19:440:19:46

I really love the way he's bringing a contemporary

0:19:460:19:49

new look into Diana and Steve's home.

0:19:490:19:52

This is a daring scheme and either this is going to be massively

0:19:520:19:57

successful or, "Oh, no. This is a total disaster."

0:19:570:20:01

There's nothing in-between on this project.

0:20:010:20:04

After clearing the room,

0:20:050:20:07

Jordan wastes no time in splashing on some bright tones.

0:20:070:20:11

A lamp I picked up in an antiques market.

0:20:110:20:14

I gave it a quick undercoat which has now gone off

0:20:140:20:17

and I'm giving it a top coat of this lovely mustard yellow,

0:20:170:20:20

which is the same colour as Diana's favourite chair.

0:20:200:20:22

With the shade on it, I think it's going to look really smart.

0:20:220:20:25

Ideally I would have sprayed it, because it's quite a tricky shape,

0:20:250:20:28

but I couldn't get a spray that matched the colour

0:20:280:20:30

I wanted for the room so...small brush and a lot of patience.

0:20:300:20:34

Work is now under way in all four of the rooms.

0:20:380:20:41

The challenge for our designers will be to enhance

0:20:410:20:44

what are already such beautifully designed homes.

0:20:440:20:47

Lord Milton's architect William Chambers made the designs

0:20:470:20:50

as simple as he could so they could be put up by unskilled workers.

0:20:500:20:53

Even the residents of the old village themselves

0:20:530:20:56

often using reclaimed materials from their newly demolished homes.

0:20:560:20:59

Chambers was best known for the neo-classical style

0:21:010:21:04

but in fact he could turn his hand to anything.

0:21:040:21:07

In the village he went for a more rustic look

0:21:070:21:10

with brick chimneys which, set on both sides of the house,

0:21:100:21:13

are typical of Georgian architecture.

0:21:130:21:15

Each cottage was then subdivided into four dwellings,

0:21:150:21:18

two at the front and two at the back,

0:21:180:21:20

so that up to 36 people, at any one time,

0:21:200:21:22

could be living in each building.

0:21:220:21:24

Luckily modern day living means fewer people per cottage,

0:21:250:21:29

giving the occupants more space.

0:21:290:21:31

And it's this living space our designers are now updating.

0:21:310:21:35

With only £1,000 the amateur designers have to be clever

0:21:350:21:38

with how they spend their money, and for her modern woodland look,

0:21:380:21:42

Sarah's found ways to cut back.

0:21:420:21:45

This is my internet auction sofa.

0:21:450:21:47

It doesn't look great at the moment

0:21:470:21:49

but it's going to be a fantastic contrast when it's finished, I hope.

0:21:490:21:53

The sofa cost £170,

0:21:530:21:56

and she's avoiding extra expense by doing the hard work herself.

0:21:560:22:00

I've never upholstered a sofa before

0:22:010:22:03

and all the cushions have already gone off to be re-upholstered

0:22:030:22:06

so they are fantastic and going to be beautiful.

0:22:060:22:09

I'm hoping that I can do justice to this.

0:22:120:22:14

I'm aware of the fact this is their family sofa,

0:22:140:22:16

they're going to be sitting on it every day.

0:22:160:22:18

It can't be an amateur effort,

0:22:180:22:20

it has to be really substantial and really well done.

0:22:200:22:22

It's looking great, I absolutely love it

0:22:220:22:25

but I have got one little concern.

0:22:250:22:27

I'm not sure it's Lars and I'm not sure it's Monique.

0:22:270:22:30

This sort of patchwork look I don't think is theirs.

0:22:300:22:33

A few doors down Jordan has concerns about his bold colour scheme.

0:22:390:22:43

I was a little bit nervous. I mean, the fabric's quite bold.

0:22:450:22:47

From her just seeing the mood board, it frightened her a little bit

0:22:470:22:50

but, actually, once she sees the whole room she's going to love it.

0:22:500:22:53

It's not the traditional chintz.

0:22:530:22:56

It's a very bright, paintily floral

0:22:560:22:58

and actually they're really on trend right now,

0:22:580:23:00

this is the new way with floral.

0:23:000:23:02

So she's going to have the trendiest house in the whole of Milton Abbas.

0:23:020:23:05

She's going to be the envy of all the neighbours.

0:23:050:23:07

There's no reason you get to a certain age

0:23:070:23:09

that you can't enjoy pattern and colour and go for something bold.

0:23:090:23:13

It's all about the fabrics really in that room,

0:23:130:23:15

he's keeping it very plain and neutral.

0:23:150:23:18

The only slight nag is this is a very big leap for Diana

0:23:180:23:22

to take on board, it's going to look incredibly different in there.

0:23:220:23:26

With his rustic period design in mind,

0:23:290:23:31

Johnny's starting with a traditional coloured paint.

0:23:310:23:35

John and Peggy like natural heritage colour

0:23:350:23:38

so I decided to go for this "starling's egg",

0:23:380:23:42

which is like a pale blue, lighter than the duck egg blue,

0:23:420:23:48

which I felt would have been a bit too cold.

0:23:480:23:50

He's doing well to stay constrained because, you know,

0:23:500:23:53

Johnny's rock'n'roll, not Milton Abbas.

0:23:530:23:56

Before she can start on her autumnal colour scheme,

0:24:010:24:04

there's a practical problem for Charmaine.

0:24:040:24:07

I thought, "How are we going to build around this?"

0:24:070:24:09

What we'll do is come here

0:24:090:24:11

and we'll incorporate our radiator cover into the end of the cupboard.

0:24:110:24:16

It's still usable space. We'll have to space it into the corner.

0:24:160:24:20

I had to change the design a little bit

0:24:200:24:22

but it's going to look great, actually,

0:24:220:24:24

that it's going to wrap around and cover the heater

0:24:240:24:28

and incorporate it into the window seat.

0:24:280:24:30

She has got such an ambitious project.

0:24:320:24:36

Acres of bespoke shelving and cupboards.

0:24:360:24:40

I'm just concerned she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

0:24:400:24:44

Day one is drawing to a close for our quarterfinalists.

0:24:460:24:49

Smooth sailing.

0:24:500:24:52

Which I don't know is a good thing or a bad thing at this stage.

0:24:520:24:56

But, yes, I'm still confident.

0:24:560:24:59

But, for Sarah, the night is still young.

0:25:010:25:04

Slightly unconventional, sewing in the dark.

0:25:040:25:07

I'd really love to get this finished today,

0:25:070:25:09

it'd be a great thing to check off the list

0:25:090:25:11

and then tomorrow we can really get stuck into all the furniture

0:25:110:25:13

and get the pattern on the walls.

0:25:130:25:15

It's day two, and after winning one heat already

0:25:230:25:27

our designers are now competing for a place in the semifinals,

0:25:270:25:30

but only two can go through.

0:25:300:25:33

With so much to play for,

0:25:340:25:36

the designers have really got to step up a gear

0:25:360:25:38

to deliver their briefs to their homeowners.

0:25:380:25:41

To bring textures to Charmaine's autumnal colour scheme

0:25:420:25:46

she's putting up some blinds.

0:25:460:25:48

But unfortunately her client gave her the wrong measurements.

0:25:480:25:51

-This is the one that came.

-Oh, I'm sorry!

0:25:510:25:54

No, no. Don't worry about it, I'm going to fix it.

0:25:540:25:57

I'm going to fix it.

0:25:570:25:59

I'm either going to make a new one or I'm going to do something very

0:25:590:26:02

special with this one, I haven't quite decided yet.

0:26:020:26:04

This is actually in very good nick and it's the perfect size.

0:26:040:26:07

It's a blackout also,

0:26:070:26:09

so I'm just sort of having a bit of a tinker around with those

0:26:090:26:12

and I'll figure something out. Don't worry about it, I can fix it.

0:26:120:26:16

-OK.

-Situations like this,

0:26:160:26:19

it's important to be adaptable and flexible.

0:26:190:26:21

I'm going to get my A game on and I'm going to get sewing

0:26:210:26:24

and get crafting and make sure everything looks beautiful.

0:26:240:26:28

And I've just noticed a crack in the wall! It wasn't there yesterday.

0:26:280:26:32

Oh, my God! The plaster's falling off!

0:26:320:26:35

So, yeah, A game on. It's on.

0:26:350:26:38

Having finished reupholstering her sofa, Sarah turns her attention

0:26:390:26:43

to the more modern elements of her woodland theme.

0:26:430:26:46

I'm really worried about the lighting.

0:26:460:26:48

Lars and Monique had their pendant light swinging off.

0:26:480:26:51

They have a clip in the ceiling and I thought about doing the same thing

0:26:510:26:54

but I'm worried that it's just not going to look lovely enough.

0:26:540:26:58

I've got three flexes and I'm going to wind them round...

0:26:580:27:01

it's actually a wreath frame,

0:27:010:27:03

that you buy when you're making a Christmas wreath.

0:27:030:27:05

A copper frame, basically.

0:27:050:27:07

and the weight is going to be self-supporting.

0:27:070:27:10

It's level, when it's dressed it's going to look lovely.

0:27:100:27:12

I've got some birds to go into it.

0:27:120:27:15

I think I'm going to be pleased with it when it's done.

0:27:150:27:17

This isn't the only light.

0:27:170:27:19

They could always knock this one off and use another light.

0:27:190:27:21

-What's your plan with that?

-Well, I've actually, I've bought a twig...

0:27:210:27:25

well, quite a substantial bit of silver birch down.

0:27:250:27:28

-This one here?

-Yeah.

-Oh, my goodness. It's quite amazing

0:27:280:27:31

And how will you light it?

0:27:320:27:34

I have another one of these flexes that literally has

0:27:340:27:36

a plug on the end, and a bulb.

0:27:360:27:39

-And it's just one bulb hanging off this?

-It is.

0:27:390:27:42

Sarah's a designer who has lots and lots of creative ideas.

0:27:420:27:46

Some super ideas but I just wonder if we're going one idea too far.

0:27:460:27:51

It's really got a lot of algae and dirt on it basically,

0:27:510:27:54

so I've borrowed Lars' jet washer.

0:27:540:27:56

I've never used one before so I'm going in.

0:27:560:28:00

While Sarah cleans up the bark on her lamp stand...

0:28:030:28:06

..further down the road Jordan's working hard

0:28:070:28:10

-to prove he knows how to play with colour.

-What's going on here?

0:28:100:28:13

I'm just doing a dip dye effect on the lampshades

0:28:130:28:16

for the wall lights behind.

0:28:160:28:18

It's just water and a concentrated watercolour.

0:28:180:28:21

It's not an ink then,

0:28:210:28:23

it's a watercolour paint that you get from an artist's shop?

0:28:230:28:25

Yep, absolutely. Fingers crossed.

0:28:250:28:27

Just hold it in there for a couple of seconds.

0:28:270:28:30

And then the dry fabric is soaking up.

0:28:300:28:32

That's it, and it'll actually climb up a little bit as well.

0:28:320:28:36

Jordan's got the potential to pull off quite a daring colour scheme.

0:28:360:28:39

I mean, he's really giving this country cottage look

0:28:390:28:42

a very contemporary twist.

0:28:420:28:45

But is it too daring?

0:28:450:28:46

Keeping to his homeowners' rustic brief,

0:28:500:28:52

Johnny's using natural wood to cover the modern radiator.

0:28:520:28:56

Can't wait to see the shelving now!

0:28:560:28:59

Having moderated his style so far,

0:29:000:29:03

he's keen to release some creative flair

0:29:030:29:05

on the leftover wood in the garden.

0:29:050:29:07

Just sizing up the two side legs for the standard lamp.

0:29:070:29:12

So this is the main piece, these are the two side bits.

0:29:120:29:15

I think it'll look nice.

0:29:150:29:18

What's bringing the room together is using this local sourced wood,

0:29:210:29:26

that's giving the room the character.

0:29:260:29:29

This is really going to tie the room into the rustic,

0:29:290:29:32

traditional country house feel.

0:29:320:29:34

Hopefully that vision I have of the room, it'll come together.

0:29:360:29:39

I know Johnny loves modernism

0:29:390:29:41

but he's really showing that he's able to be an adaptable designer.

0:29:410:29:46

Our amateurs are working hard on the insides of these idyllic cottages.

0:29:500:29:54

That would look really funny on there, wouldn't it?

0:29:540:29:57

But 240 years ago it wasn't just the buildings

0:29:580:30:01

that Lord Milton was keen to redesign.

0:30:010:30:04

This may look like the green and pleasant land of Britain

0:30:040:30:07

but it's not as natural as it appears.

0:30:070:30:10

In the 1700s landscaping was all the rage

0:30:100:30:12

and one name stood above the rest,

0:30:120:30:14

the most prolific name in design, Lancelot "Capability" Brown,

0:30:140:30:18

so called because of his dictum that any land was capable of improvement.

0:30:180:30:22

Brown was renowned for his determined attitude,

0:30:240:30:27

shown here by his agreement with Lord Milton than the old

0:30:270:30:29

village should be demolished. It may have been controversial

0:30:290:30:32

but over time the residents did benefit and now Brown's work

0:30:320:30:36

here in Dorset is considered among his best in the whole country.

0:30:360:30:39

The designers are just halfway through their three-day challenge

0:30:450:30:49

and for Sarah it's time to bring out her secret weapon.

0:30:490:30:53

In the first round I used this roller to put a very lovely pattern,

0:30:540:30:57

cow parsley seed heads, and that was on one wall in grey.

0:30:570:31:00

There was a grey wall with some white on it.

0:31:000:31:02

This time I'm doing the reverse.

0:31:020:31:04

It's going to show up a lot more using a dark paint on the distemper.

0:31:040:31:09

Keeping a steady hand is crucial for making the pattern knit together.

0:31:110:31:15

That looks great, doesn't it? I'm glad you're doing it, not me.

0:31:150:31:18

I think if you seek perfection when you're doing this, you will fail.

0:31:180:31:22

In general if it's going off course,

0:31:220:31:24

it's just the way it is, you know. I try my hardest.

0:31:240:31:27

I'm a bit concerned that it looks like wrapping paper,

0:31:270:31:30

it's standing out quite a lot, it's quite bold.

0:31:300:31:32

You come in, your eyes are drawn to it

0:31:320:31:34

and it does look a bit Christmassy.

0:31:340:31:36

I think it probably needs to dry a bit.

0:31:360:31:38

SHE SIGHS

0:31:380:31:40

Jordan's curtains are back from the seamstress.

0:31:400:31:43

-I mean, what the hell?

-But there's a problem.

0:31:430:31:46

I'm holding it underneath the window.

0:31:470:31:50

It's going to be about there. And then that one is just ginormous!

0:31:500:31:54

That's for the door.

0:31:560:31:58

The curtains appear to have been made short,

0:32:040:32:06

which could be disastrous.

0:32:060:32:09

I don't know what else to say, dun dun dun!

0:32:120:32:15

After struggling to finish his room in the last round, Johnny must

0:32:220:32:25

show the judges that he's capable of managing this project to time.

0:32:250:32:30

Wow, Johnny. You've moved on.

0:32:300:32:33

Slightly, slightly.

0:32:330:32:34

-No, not slightly, a lot! This is fantastic.

-Thank you.

0:32:340:32:37

We've got a sort of joinery fiesta going on there on the other

0:32:370:32:41

side of this room, haven't we?

0:32:410:32:43

Please don't mention that! It's not finished yet.

0:32:430:32:45

It's not finished yet, it looks like a giraffe at the moment.

0:32:450:32:48

There's not many giraffes around here so I doubt it's indigenous.

0:32:480:32:51

I'm guessing it's a lamp stand, right?

0:32:510:32:53

-And you've taken quite a modern inspiration.

-I have.

0:32:530:32:57

-And is it working for you?

-Kind of.

0:32:570:33:00

You're not really happy with it.

0:33:000:33:02

-No, I'm not really.

-Maybe it's too much?

0:33:020:33:04

There's the fireplace there so maybe that will go into the fire.

0:33:040:33:08

THEY LAUGH

0:33:080:33:11

-So there's a use to it!

-It has a use, yes!

0:33:110:33:14

Further up the road, using just a small slice of her budget,

0:33:160:33:20

Charmaine's paid £20 for a piece of foam to create

0:33:200:33:23

a window seat cushion.

0:33:230:33:25

Voila!

0:33:250:33:26

Perfect!

0:33:280:33:30

No. Hang on, no, it's not perfect.

0:33:330:33:37

Put it in place, and although I measured it,

0:33:390:33:41

it's actually a little bit too short. It'll work, it'll work.

0:33:410:33:47

I'm a designer, I can do this.

0:33:470:33:48

This British tweed style fabric has taken just £100

0:33:500:33:54

out of her £1,000 budget.

0:33:540:33:56

I see you've chosen this wool plaid and wool fabrics are a great

0:33:560:34:00

way of getting some rustic texture and some warmth into a scheme.

0:34:000:34:03

Absolutely. Corrine talked a lot about autumnal colours

0:34:030:34:05

and she actually mentioned that she liked tartan

0:34:050:34:07

so I definitely wanted to throw a bit of that in there

0:34:070:34:10

and, like I said, yes, some authentic tartan.

0:34:100:34:12

Good, excellent.

0:34:120:34:14

It's probably the only bit of sewing that I'm going to be doing

0:34:140:34:16

this time round because the biggest part is the built-in storage.

0:34:160:34:21

Charmaine's showing herself to be a great project manager,

0:34:210:34:24

she's had that enormous bit of bespoke fitted storage design and build.

0:34:240:34:28

There's also a look that we're looking for.

0:34:280:34:30

She's going to have to pull it together on all the accessorising

0:34:300:34:34

the cushions and the finishes, I'm still not quite sure.

0:34:340:34:37

So that's the final bit I've just stitched on there,

0:34:370:34:40

I'm going to turn it inside out now, and try and fit my cushion in.

0:34:400:34:46

What a nightmare!

0:34:550:34:56

Much better.

0:35:060:35:07

Our amateurs have until lunchtime tomorrow to get their designs

0:35:110:35:14

for these traditional living rooms looking just right.

0:35:140:35:17

But when this model village was built,

0:35:170:35:20

the focus was on outside aesthetics, demanding precise planning.

0:35:200:35:24

Each cottage is built on a very generous plot of land,

0:35:250:35:28

so out the front there's a lovely lawn

0:35:280:35:30

and originally, at the rear, there would have been space

0:35:300:35:32

for an allotment and somewhere to keep your chickens, and your pigs.

0:35:320:35:35

Each cottage has a thatched roof which keeps it cosy in winter

0:35:350:35:38

and cool in summer but of course it's highly flammable.

0:35:380:35:41

So to counter this, they placed the cottages far apart

0:35:410:35:43

and in-between, brown planted chestnut trees,

0:35:430:35:46

living would be far less flammable than deadwood.

0:35:460:35:49

There are several wells in the village fed from a local spring,

0:35:500:35:54

reducing the need to travel for water.

0:35:540:35:56

And the entire village is built on a gradient, so all the drainage

0:35:560:36:00

flows that way, making the air generally more pleasant.

0:36:000:36:04

It's late afternoon of day two

0:36:050:36:08

and Sarah's unhappy with her wall design.

0:36:080:36:11

I really want to cover up some of these darker lines

0:36:110:36:13

that are really jumping out,

0:36:130:36:15

so I'm just getting a little bit of wet paint on this one. Well,

0:36:150:36:18

at this rate I'm thinking it's best to re-paint it all and re-do it.

0:36:180:36:22

-It won't take me long to paint it.

-Just paint it.

0:36:220:36:25

I think it'll look bad if it's a bad fix. I might as well be bold

0:36:250:36:28

and start again and just clear it up.

0:36:280:36:30

I think we know what we need to do.

0:36:310:36:33

I was really hoping to get the curtains up this evening.

0:36:350:36:38

They've just been jetted off to somebody who's kindly offered

0:36:380:36:41

to try and repair them for us, and hopefully they're going to be

0:36:410:36:44

back tomorrow ready to hang in the morning.

0:36:440:36:47

Tomorrow, all I really want to do now is bring the furniture back in,

0:36:470:36:51

put some throws over the sofa, and actually sit down on the sofa

0:36:510:36:56

and have a look where I am, with a cup of tea.

0:36:560:36:59

Just up the road, uneven walls are causing

0:37:010:37:03

problems for Charmaine's unit.

0:37:030:37:05

It's not a problem, you just need to stick a leg on.

0:37:070:37:11

I'm panicking now.

0:37:110:37:14

I'll be devastated if things aren't finished tomorrow but I'm not

0:37:140:37:16

even thinking about that because they will be finished tomorrow.

0:37:160:37:20

We can do it.

0:37:200:37:21

So time is nearly up for our designers.

0:37:340:37:36

Today the homeowners will see their rooms

0:37:360:37:39

and what they think of them will help the judges decide

0:37:390:37:41

who goes through to the next stage of the competition.

0:37:410:37:44

After being unhappy with her paint roller effect yesterday,

0:37:510:37:54

Sarah's aiming for more subtle results.

0:37:540:37:57

That's my new colour.

0:37:570:37:58

Just a few hours before the deadline this is her last attempt

0:37:590:38:03

to get it right.

0:38:030:38:05

That's definitely putting it in the background, isn't it?

0:38:050:38:09

The wall is looking better, I think the colour looks great.

0:38:090:38:12

It looks like it might have been here 100 years,

0:38:120:38:14

not painted today so that's really good.

0:38:140:38:16

Little woodland accent going on in the background

0:38:160:38:19

rather than a full forest.

0:38:190:38:21

That's all right, isn't it?

0:38:270:38:29

We can call it a day. I'm on schedule,

0:38:290:38:31

definitely ahead of time and not pushed for anything, so that's

0:38:310:38:33

a bit worrying because I'm thinking perhaps I'm not doing enough.

0:38:330:38:37

A few doors down there's been a delivery.

0:38:420:38:44

Curtains are back from the emergency seamstress

0:38:440:38:47

and I'm about to open them and check if they're right.

0:38:470:38:49

Look at that, aren't they groovy?

0:38:540:38:57

Absolutely wonderful, it's brilliant, I couldn't be happier.

0:38:570:39:00

Panic over and all systems go.

0:39:000:39:02

Keen to prove he can be brave with colour,

0:39:040:39:06

Jordan's painting the rocking chair.

0:39:060:39:09

Although on its own it may seem like quite a pop of colour,

0:39:090:39:12

once it's sitting against the fireplace with the brick wall,

0:39:120:39:15

I think the contrast of that is really going to stand out beautifully.

0:39:150:39:19

To bring his natural scheme together

0:39:210:39:24

Johnny's using some rustic-looking fabric.

0:39:240:39:27

I'm trying to get the extension

0:39:270:39:29

but the extension won't plug in the wall!

0:39:290:39:33

I'm going to do a little...

0:39:330:39:34

Well, it's the first time I've attempted it actually.

0:39:340:39:37

I've got some fabric left over from the curtains

0:39:370:39:39

and I'm going to glue it to the interior of the lamp,

0:39:390:39:42

hopefully it'll give it its own uniqueness.

0:39:420:39:45

I don't know, the room does look a bit bare

0:39:450:39:47

but I don't want to overcrowd this quaint little

0:39:470:39:50

cottage, you know? I don't want to put too much stuff in it.

0:39:500:39:54

Great little touch even if I say so myself.

0:39:540:39:57

With work not going to plan there have been some changes to

0:40:010:40:04

Charmaine's bespoke unit.

0:40:040:40:07

I've run out of time

0:40:070:40:08

and I'm not getting to build my shelving unit over the door.

0:40:080:40:12

My main concern is obviously I want to get through

0:40:120:40:16

but I really just want to do a good job for the homeowner.

0:40:160:40:19

Corrine really deserves it. I don't think it would affect

0:40:190:40:22

the design much because I've still given her a lot of storage.

0:40:220:40:26

Having spent a third of her budget on the sofa, she's

0:40:260:40:30

struggling to find a home for it in the room.

0:40:300:40:33

Great start, it's not fitting.

0:40:330:40:36

It fits in the room,

0:40:360:40:37

it just doesn't fit INTO the room, which is a bit of a nuisance.

0:40:370:40:41

I actually don't even know how much time I have left, which isn't great.

0:40:420:40:48

It's quite heavy.

0:40:500:40:52

Our designers have had three days and £1,000

0:40:540:40:57

to create front rooms fit for these thatched cottages.

0:40:570:41:01

That looks beautiful, mate, you've done a lovely job of that.

0:41:010:41:05

They have been working to different briefs,

0:41:080:41:10

each presenting its own set of challenges.

0:41:100:41:13

At this point, I can't help but wonder if any of the other

0:41:130:41:16

designers are up a ladder weaving acorns into their light fitting.

0:41:160:41:21

All four are racing to the finish and it's up to the judges to

0:41:210:41:24

decide who will go through to the semifinals.

0:41:240:41:27

I'm just stressing, Steve.

0:41:270:41:29

Yeah? No worries.

0:41:290:41:31

Dressing or stressing?

0:41:310:41:34

I think it's looking super,

0:41:340:41:36

I love the final result and I just hope Diana does too.

0:41:360:41:42

I'm done.

0:41:440:41:46

That's it, we're done.

0:41:460:41:47

First to be judged is Johnny who had to prove

0:41:540:41:57

he could pull a whole room together with his rustic, cottagey design.

0:41:570:42:01

Three days ago it felt cramped,

0:42:020:42:04

with traditional features battling the modern additions.

0:42:040:42:08

Now, the room feels more airy,

0:42:210:42:24

with a natural wood radiator cover,

0:42:240:42:26

a set of handmade laddered shelves,

0:42:260:42:28

and a bespoke lamp creating soft lighting throughout the room.

0:42:280:42:32

Showing he can work in keeping with period properties,

0:42:350:42:38

Johnny has used heritage pattern prints for his curtains,

0:42:380:42:41

repeating the theme across his design.

0:42:410:42:44

That's a transformation, isn't it?

0:42:500:42:52

It's more than that, it's just lovely.

0:42:520:42:55

He's been really sensitive to the period of the house,

0:42:550:42:58

their love of all the natural materials.

0:42:580:43:01

He hasn't put himself in here,

0:43:010:43:03

and yet he has given them an updated look.

0:43:030:43:05

And I even like the radiator cover.

0:43:050:43:08

It's really cool.

0:43:080:43:10

Look at it, this is this green oak,

0:43:100:43:13

so you've got that lovely softness to it.

0:43:130:43:16

-He's known to keep the rustic edges.

-Exactly. And I think this is

0:43:160:43:18

what's happening here as well with the laddered shelving.

0:43:180:43:21

They've actually made it look like it's got little pegs,

0:43:210:43:24

-it's been pegged together.

-My sort of overall feeling, actually,

0:43:240:43:27

looking around the room, it's all very pleasing,

0:43:270:43:29

but it has lost, for me, an element of that lovely, snug, cosy feeling

0:43:290:43:33

that Peggy and John had created.

0:43:330:43:35

It does feel quite cool in here, and I wonder whether he's taken it

0:43:350:43:39

a little bit too far, stripped a bit too much out of this room.

0:43:390:43:42

How well each designer fulfils the brief

0:43:430:43:46

is crucial to the judge's decision.

0:43:460:43:49

Homeowners John and Peggy will now see the completed room

0:43:490:43:52

for the first time.

0:43:520:43:53

So?

0:43:530:43:55

Wonderful!

0:43:550:43:56

This is restful.

0:43:560:43:58

You keep looking around and you keep seeing something different.

0:43:580:44:02

I just never expected it to turn out like that.

0:44:020:44:06

And then, this you see...

0:44:060:44:08

I really do like the cover, it becomes a kind of feature,

0:44:080:44:13

-a piece of furniture, not a horrible old radiator.

-It is!

0:44:130:44:17

Next up, and wanting to show her versatility, is Sarah,

0:44:200:44:24

who designed a woodland theme with modern touches.

0:44:240:44:27

Before, this was a plain, uninspiring living room.

0:44:300:44:33

Now, it's been completely transformed,

0:44:440:44:47

with natural colours and fabrics,

0:44:470:44:49

items from the garden,

0:44:490:44:51

and home-made woodland creatures.

0:44:510:44:53

She's added a new set of curtains,

0:44:530:44:56

a large rug, and a cleverly designed tray

0:44:560:44:58

to store children's toys, which rolls under the sofa.

0:44:580:45:03

To give the room a more modern edge, Sarah has introduced

0:45:030:45:06

designer light bulbs and more contemporary furniture,

0:45:060:45:08

including a coffee table and a re-upholstered 1960s sofa.

0:45:080:45:12

Oh, wow.

0:45:150:45:17

-Look at the little birds.

-Gosh.

-The first thing I spotted.

0:45:190:45:23

This has worked very successfully.

0:45:230:45:25

First time round she recognised that it was too strong

0:45:250:45:28

and so she went to the trouble of painting it all out and doing it

0:45:280:45:31

again in a very subtle effect and I think that's lovely

0:45:310:45:35

and I think that was important in this room, that it doesn't

0:45:350:45:38

become too cluttered visually, that it still feels clean and simple.

0:45:380:45:42

For me, I think this is ingenious

0:45:420:45:44

and it's an idea that, frankly, I'm going to steal.

0:45:440:45:48

Putting all the toys underneath the sofa is a great idea.

0:45:480:45:51

I think it's really fun and there's humour and thought in it.

0:45:510:45:55

I'm not sure how relaxing these lights are.

0:45:550:45:57

Yeah, they're a bit harsh.

0:45:570:45:58

I think what we need in here is a dimmer switch, that simple.

0:45:580:46:01

It's a very practical lighting, though, and I just love the idea

0:46:010:46:04

of the branch, I mean, how ingenious.

0:46:040:46:06

Sarah's certainly brought the outside in.

0:46:060:46:09

Really depends if Lars and Monique like it.

0:46:090:46:11

If they don't like it, this is not a winning design.

0:46:110:46:14

-Oh, wow.

-Wow.

0:46:210:46:24

Oh, my goodness.

0:46:240:46:25

-What do you think?

-Very good.

0:46:250:46:28

It's amazing! Beautiful.

0:46:280:46:30

It's really light, isn't it?

0:46:300:46:33

Has she managed to square the circle between a cosy room

0:46:330:46:35

but also a modern room?

0:46:350:46:36

I think so, yeah, it's very modern, isn't it?

0:46:360:46:39

I like the way she takes old things and puts them together

0:46:390:46:42

and makes it look new. It's my kind of style, I like that.

0:46:420:46:45

Brilliant. And a little tray for Viggo.

0:46:450:46:47

Looks like Norway to me, I can see that.

0:46:470:46:49

Denmark there as well, I think. What do you think of the light?

0:46:490:46:52

-I love the light.

-And I love the wall, with the stencil.

0:46:520:46:55

Yes, you can just see it.

0:46:550:46:57

The pattern there is great but maybe just that little bit too...

0:46:570:47:02

-Too subtle?

-Too subtle, exactly.

0:47:020:47:04

I actually like it subtle, I wouldn't want it to be overpowering.

0:47:040:47:08

There you go, she wouldn't have pleased both of you.

0:47:080:47:10

No, you can never please both of us.

0:47:100:47:12

Next, Charmaine's design for a country cottage look

0:47:150:47:18

with autumnal colours.

0:47:180:47:19

Three days ago it had the feel of a holiday cottage,

0:47:230:47:26

lacking warmth and seating space.

0:47:260:47:28

She's now transformed the room with a large bespoke unit

0:47:400:47:43

with designer touches.

0:47:430:47:45

And a comfortable L-shaped sofa bringing the whole family together.

0:47:470:47:51

She's dressed the windows with a natural tweed fabric

0:47:540:47:57

and created a new window seat with tartan material,

0:47:570:48:00

all in autumnal shades - giving a cosy warm feel to the room.

0:48:000:48:05

-I think that's very nice.

-It's lovely.

0:48:080:48:10

Yeah, I mean, that was a really ambitious part of the brief,

0:48:100:48:14

to build this bespoke unit and I think this is a lovely idea,

0:48:140:48:19

putting wallpaper in the back, so rather than it just being

0:48:190:48:21

painted white, she's adding a little bit of texture and interest that

0:48:210:48:25

makes it feel a bit older and also links in with the cushion fabrics.

0:48:250:48:29

I like what she's done with the window seat,

0:48:290:48:32

because it was a little bit narrow.

0:48:320:48:33

You actually now could sit in that sidewards and read

0:48:330:48:37

-and look out the window.

-The other thing that's jumping out for me

0:48:370:48:40

is how this room very much looks as it was presented at the beginning.

0:48:400:48:44

She did her board, she did her plan,

0:48:440:48:48

and you very much see the journey from inception to presentation

0:48:480:48:52

to the result, and I think that's very professional.

0:48:520:48:55

-So, welcome to your new cosy look.

-Wow.

0:49:000:49:03

Oh, it's beautiful, I love the sofa, this is gorgeous.

0:49:050:49:08

What I like is the fact that now we can all sit together on the sofa

0:49:080:49:13

without fighting.

0:49:130:49:14

We had plenty of seats before but for some reason it didn't work.

0:49:140:49:18

And say goodbye to your shelving unit on the side of the windows,

0:49:180:49:21

you've got a whole new bespoke made one here.

0:49:210:49:23

Yes this is...wow...it works so well with the wallpaper. Brilliant.

0:49:230:49:28

Finally, it's Jordan's colourful cosy cottage design.

0:49:320:49:36

Before, it was overcrowded, with a lot of dark furniture.

0:49:390:49:42

It's now a less cluttered room with an eye-catching scheme.

0:49:550:49:59

Keen to prove he could work with colour,

0:50:000:50:02

Jordan has dressed the room with bold floral curtains,

0:50:020:50:05

bright lampshades, a bright pink rocking chair,

0:50:050:50:09

and other personal touches.

0:50:090:50:11

He's also added a bespoke radiator cover,

0:50:160:50:19

and removed the carpet,

0:50:190:50:20

revealing the wooden floor beneath.

0:50:200:50:22

Oof!

0:50:250:50:27

HE LAUGHS

0:50:270:50:29

-Gosh, it looks so different, doesn't it?

-Oh, it's such a happy room.

0:50:290:50:32

What an interpretation of the country, great fun.

0:50:320:50:35

I think the layout is the first thing that hits me.

0:50:350:50:37

Do you remember that room? You could hardly move for chairs and furniture.

0:50:370:50:42

This is great, she can move around with ease.

0:50:420:50:45

And on the brief she wanted

0:50:450:50:46

a striking new treatment for her windows.

0:50:460:50:49

But he's used the colours in the fabric throughout

0:50:490:50:51

all the other soft furnishings and finishings which really brings

0:50:510:50:54

the room together, and I think that's actually quite a difficult thing

0:50:540:50:57

to do when you're using quite a lot of different colours together.

0:50:570:51:00

The big pink element...

0:51:000:51:02

-What do you think of the pink chair?

-I love it.

0:51:020:51:05

I quite love it because it's a pop of colour against the blue floor.

0:51:050:51:09

We've always believed along the way he had to really go for it.

0:51:090:51:12

You can't do this kind of look halfway, it'll just look half-baked.

0:51:120:51:16

Yep, it would have looked dreadful. And he's gone all the way,

0:51:160:51:19

but I do wonder if he's gone a little bit too far.

0:51:190:51:23

We have these curtains, they look great, but he's washed down the look

0:51:230:51:26

a little bit by actually having too much of the fabric

0:51:260:51:30

and I think this curtain should have just picked out one of the colours

0:51:300:51:35

from the rest of the room and then let those sing and this keep quiet.

0:51:350:51:39

Oh, wow! That's terrific, isn't it?

0:51:430:51:47

Wow, look at that!

0:51:470:51:49

-Well, you can't miss it!

-That's true!

0:51:490:51:52

Absolutely true, yes.

0:51:520:51:55

That really works, doesn't it?

0:51:550:51:56

The boy's a genius.

0:51:560:51:58

Well, you wanted a sort of statement window.

0:52:000:52:02

It is a statement, yes. That's terrific.

0:52:020:52:05

So, I'm getting positive vibes from you two.

0:52:050:52:07

-Yes.

-Very much so.

-Yes, I think it's lovely.

0:52:070:52:09

Cos it is a very big statement

0:52:090:52:11

and I guess you're either going to like it or you're not.

0:52:110:52:13

-It is.

-Yes, it is, it's a terrific change.

0:52:130:52:15

I think it's rather nice having it all turned round.

0:52:150:52:19

Yes, I'll probably get used to a pink rocking chair, yes.

0:52:190:52:22

I love the cushions so I think what it loses on the rocking chair,

0:52:220:52:26

it gets back on the cushions.

0:52:260:52:27

THEY LAUGH

0:52:270:52:30

Now the designers can only wait to find out which two will go through.

0:52:320:52:38

If I go through and I go through all of this again, that's great.

0:52:380:52:41

I'm taking every day as it comes and loving what I'm doing, so we'll see.

0:52:410:52:46

It means a lot to me to go through, because I want a career in interiors,

0:52:460:52:50

it's something that comes natural - I'm creative.

0:52:500:52:55

I've given it my all, you know, I've put my heart and my soul into it

0:52:550:52:59

and it means the world to me to win this competition.

0:52:590:53:02

I'd love to be in the semifinal

0:53:040:53:06

and I'd love to be in the final,

0:53:060:53:08

I've got to be honest. I always came into this as a competition

0:53:080:53:11

and I want to go all the way.

0:53:110:53:13

So, judges, you wanted the designers to up their game

0:53:160:53:18

for this quarterfinal. Have they delivered?

0:53:180:53:20

Oh, yes, and haven't they delivered wonderfully?

0:53:200:53:23

It's very exciting, but it's going to make our decision very difficult.

0:53:230:53:27

So, Lars and Monique wanted something that was rustic but modern, bright but cosy.

0:53:270:53:32

Did Sarah deliver?

0:53:320:53:33

She put in oodles of creativity,

0:53:330:53:36

she shows that she's got boundless resource of ideas

0:53:360:53:41

and that's lovely to see in a designer.

0:53:410:53:43

My concern, though, was that were we getting

0:53:430:53:46

a repetition of the style that we saw last time.

0:53:460:53:50

Has she been versatile?

0:53:500:53:51

Has she been able to address this brief in a slightly different way

0:53:510:53:55

than she addressed the previous brief?

0:53:550:53:57

How did Johnny translate in rustic, rural England?

0:53:570:54:01

We know this is clearly out of his comfort zone.

0:54:010:54:03

He needed to up his game a lot, and he has.

0:54:030:54:07

He got that project done

0:54:070:54:09

and he got it within budget.

0:54:090:54:10

For me, where it maybe fell down a little bit is it was so cute

0:54:100:54:14

and cosy and magical in there, even though it was a bit mad

0:54:140:54:17

and cluttered and I just question maybe through his choice of colour

0:54:170:54:21

whether he hadn't managed to make it quite as cosy,

0:54:210:54:23

considering it was a room they want to enjoy in the evening as well.

0:54:230:54:26

So did Charmaine fulfil her brief?

0:54:260:54:28

Completely and she had a lot to fulfil and she did it all,

0:54:280:54:32

and did it with such style as well.

0:54:320:54:34

I thought she did incredibly well. I mean, she gave them

0:54:340:54:37

a really large piece of bespoke storage,

0:54:370:54:40

but I was really looking to see a little bit more from Charmaine

0:54:400:54:43

from the first heat.

0:54:430:54:45

Just to show that she has got some creativity, she can put an original

0:54:450:54:48

twist on something and, for me, it probably fell down in that respect.

0:54:480:54:52

Jordan. Diana wanted a cheerful room and she got a cheerful room.

0:54:520:54:56

She certainly did and, personally, it put a big smile on my face,

0:54:560:54:59

to see a designer be brave with colour.

0:54:590:55:02

Where he went too far was when he put the extra curtain

0:55:020:55:07

on the other wall and I thought that was a bit too much.

0:55:070:55:10

I didn't want him to restrain, I just wanted for him to actually

0:55:100:55:13

show that he really understands how to handle colour and pattern.

0:55:130:55:17

He's got almost there, but not 100% for me.

0:55:170:55:20

So, judges, four strong contenders in the quarters,

0:55:200:55:23

but only two are going to go through to the semis.

0:55:230:55:26

Hello, designers! Now, some might have been over-awed

0:55:340:55:37

by this incredible chocolate-box setting

0:55:370:55:39

but, you four, you rose to the occasion.

0:55:390:55:42

You certainly did and it's also very clear that you took on board

0:55:420:55:46

what we advised to you last time and have moved up a step.

0:55:460:55:50

And, for me, I've just particularly loved seeing

0:55:500:55:53

all your new and innovative ideas.

0:55:530:55:56

But two of you rose beyond,

0:55:560:55:59

and the two designers going through are...

0:55:590:56:02

..Jordan...

0:56:060:56:07

..and Sarah.

0:56:090:56:10

Oh, God!

0:56:100:56:11

Well done, all of you.

0:56:110:56:13

-Guys!

-Well done!

0:56:130:56:15

I was really confident in my design, but I was really nervous

0:56:180:56:21

that it wasn't going to be exactly what Diana was expecting,

0:56:210:56:24

but I think, in the end, maybe that's what swung it for me.

0:56:240:56:27

We really liked it.

0:56:270:56:28

Oh, goodness, I'm so relieved!

0:56:280:56:30

I didn't really think about things all the way through,

0:56:300:56:33

just little bites of the cherry so I'm amazed I'm here

0:56:330:56:36

and going forward.

0:56:360:56:38

-Yeah, we love it.

-Yeah, it's really nice.

0:56:380:56:40

I'm not going to give up on interior design at all,

0:56:400:56:43

it's my passion, it's my dream, I'm going to keep doing it.

0:56:430:56:46

I'm sticking to my plan - world domination.

0:56:460:56:49

-Do you like it?

-It's beautiful!

0:56:490:56:51

Oh! I'm so glad that you like it.

0:56:510:56:54

If I'd got through to the semis, I'd have been proud of myself,

0:56:540:56:57

but maybe I should be a bit proud. I've done all right, I think.

0:56:570:57:00

-Did you like it?

-Yeah.

0:57:000:57:03

Well, Jordan took a lot of risk.

0:57:030:57:05

He was very close to not coming through to the semifinal,

0:57:050:57:09

but he pulled it off, he kept his client on board

0:57:090:57:12

and did something that is really special and rather super.

0:57:120:57:15

Sarah brings a very special magic to her designs,

0:57:160:57:21

she really thinks in the detail.

0:57:210:57:23

She's innovative, she's creative, there is no shortage of ideas.

0:57:230:57:27

So when I'm looking to put a designer through to the next round,

0:57:270:57:30

I'm confident with Sarah that she'll come up

0:57:300:57:32

with more new and interesting ideas.

0:57:320:57:34

Going forward into the semifinal, I want to see adaptability,

0:57:340:57:38

I don't want them to be sticking to the same style,

0:57:380:57:41

but actually addressing the problems,

0:57:410:57:43

addressing the architecture and the people that live in these houses.

0:57:430:57:47

This is getting a very exciting competition.

0:57:470:57:49

These cottages were conceived to please a rich landowner's

0:57:520:57:55

sense of aesthetics, designed by people hoping to create

0:57:550:57:58

the perfect image of the English countryside.

0:57:580:58:00

On the outside, they're still chocolate-box perfect,

0:58:000:58:04

but they're just as idyllic on the inside too thanks to our designers.

0:58:040:58:08

Modern and yet rustic, they'll be enjoyed by generations to come.

0:58:080:58:12

Next time, the quarterfinals get brutal...

0:58:140:58:17

Every minute counts on this one.

0:58:170:58:18

Has she not learnt anything?

0:58:180:58:20

..as our designers take over a 1950s tower block.

0:58:200:58:23

I'm finding creativity level extremely high.

0:58:230:58:27

The roller coaster continues.
