I'm constantly taken aback | 0:00:01 | 0:00:03
by the huge variety of property styles in Britain, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
from characterful timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
But sometimes what's on the inside doesn't live up to what | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
is on the outside. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
who think they could be the next big thing, to show us how it's done. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
But it's not as easy as it looks. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
I'm panicking! I feel really sick. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
16 came to show us their skills, three of the best remain. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
I'm ecstatically proud of myself. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
I am very happy, I'm very pleased. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Can't wait to do another room. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
They'll be tested like never before as they try to win | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
a place in the final. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Judging them, two industry experts, Daniel Hopwood... | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
I want to see schemes that take my breath away. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
..and Sophie Robinson. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
In order to go through, there is no room for error. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
In these final challenges, they'll face giants of the design world. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:59
Orla Kiely... | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
It does look quite rough. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
..and Kelly Hoppen. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
I want perfection. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
But only one can be crowned winner | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
of the Great Interior Design Challenge. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Previously, the final four battled it out in a dramatic quarterfinal. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
I mean, it's not cutting-edge. Don't panic! | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
And with help from guest judge Oliver Heath... | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
It's enormously confusing. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
..the judges sent one home. Now, three remain. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
Oh, that was tough! | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
I think the room is very elegant. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
I think I fulfilled the brief and more. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
This is their biggest challenge. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
For the semifinal, we're in somewhere pretty special, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
the longest wholly medieval street in Britain, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
in the beautiful cathedral city of Wells. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
The designers must battle to impress their clients. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
I think she's given herself a big task. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
SHE SCREAMS | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
And our judges. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
This isn't on brief. No ideas at the moment at all. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
But there's a surprise in store, in the shape of guest judge Orla Kiely. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
This is the semifinal. I want to be impressed. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
This is so bad! | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
Only two will go through to the grand final. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
And the designer we're saying goodbye to is... | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
This epic semifinal is taking place in Wells, Somerset, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
beside the magnificent Gothic cathedral on this idyllic | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
medieval close. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Begun in the mid-1300s, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
this cobbled close is the oldest intact residential street in Europe. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
Our semifinalists will be taking on these three medieval front rooms. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
Our designers, though, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
are going to have to be especially sensitive to the heritage | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
of the living rooms they'll be working in | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
because they are Grade 1 listed, meaning stringent rules | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and regulations over what can and can't be done. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
With the floorboards and plaster walls not to be sanded, drilled | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
or wallpapered, they'll be tested like never before as | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
they try to win a place in the grand final. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
Shall I start doing doggies? | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
It feels pretty amazing to be through to the semifinals. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
I'm, like, absolutely champing at the bit to get on and do it now. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
They've been working on a brief from their clients for the last week. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
This is wood panelling which I'm doing. Okey dokey. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
Lots of excitement but much more nervous than ever before. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
The room is going to look like, basically... | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
They have three days | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
and a small team, including a builder and a decorator. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
I'm going to make you guys work! | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
And the semifinalists have been given their biggest budget yet - | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
?1,500. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
If this is my very last chance, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
then I'm just going to give everything I've got. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
First up is ex-textile sales assistant, Frankie, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
from Surrey, originally from Taiwan. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
It'd make a very nice dress, wouldn't it? | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
When Frankie unleashes his inner creativity, it is just magic, but | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
he needs to be more confident and give us some of that Frankie flair. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
Frankie is taking on a rather busy living room | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
that doubles as a place to practise and listen to music. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
It's quite a mishmash in here, isn't it? | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Yeah, it is a Victorian cubbyhole over in the corner. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
A modern radiator. Yet there's a beam going over the top. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
It's evolved, hasn't it, this room? It's evolved, yeah. It has evolved. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
Frankie's brief is to unite the room with a nostalgic | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
and cosy grand hotel feel, but with a touch of humour. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
Frankie, in my opinion, can be | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
in danger of doing schemes that are rather frumpy, if I'm honest. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
So I think if he can give this scheme an edge, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
it could be really exciting. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
Frankie's take on nostalgic grand hotel | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
centres around a complicated Art Nouveau mural in the very | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
British tones of red, white and blue. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
My design, I think it's... | 0:05:05 | 0:05:06
I won't say suicidal, but it's actually quite risky. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
The risky scheme had to be run past client and cathedral organist, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
Johnny, before work began. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
So the room is going to look like... this. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
So I'm going to paint this mural from above the fireplace... Mm. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
In a kind of Mackintosh pattern. Yeah. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
So it's going to cross the ceiling to the other side... Wow! | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
..and then coming down next to your piano. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
I'd no idea you were going to do anything to the ceiling. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
I just think that's fascinating. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
It's just because this is Grade 1 listed house | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
and we don't allow to have wallpaper. Yeah. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
So I thought, OK, then if we only allowed to paint, let's paint a lot! | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
Yeah! And above the picture rail I'm going to put LED lighting. OK. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:55
And I'm going to add scatter cushion made out of...suit jacket! | 0:05:55 | 0:06:01
LAUGHTER | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
So it's a bit bonkers! Yeah. That's a bit of fun. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
'Well, I certainly wasn't expecting that.' | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
When the homeowner asked for sort of European grand hotel and we get... | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
Mackintosh! Yeah! | 0:06:12 | 0:06:13
Scottish! Yes! Severe, austere. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
And on top of that he is adding LED lighting, which is | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
not going to add to that room. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
It's going to be a little bit harsh. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
Work is well underway, and as wallpaper fan Frankie is having to | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
stick to breathable paints, he must brush up on his painting skills. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
Wow. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36 | |
That's how you do the line. I couldn't get the line straight. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
Just like...zzzhhooop! | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
That might not bode well for his hand-painted mural. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
Compared with mine... | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
my one's pretty bad. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
RIPPING Do you like the pencil? | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
Our second designer is textile teacher Lucy, from Colchester. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
Lucy is such an accomplished designer. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
You can't miss her enthusiasm and passion | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
and she's brimming with ideas. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
But as a result, sometimes her projects can be a little bit rushed. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
In the semifinals, I need her to create a polished and finished room. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
Before work began, this living room was bland, boring and very brown. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
Pretty beige, isn't it? These sofas are enormous. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
They're overpowering what is actually a very pretty room. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
Lucy's brief is to create an inviting hunting lodge style | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
living room for her dog-loving homeowners. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
This brief is lovely. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
It's asking for something that I feel is quite cottagey, very cosy... | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
Exactly, and we know that Lucy has got lots of ideas, | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
but actually polishing them up into one refined scheme is what | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
we're going to be looking out for. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
Really pleased with the brief. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
Not necessarily my normal choice - country lodge, hunting lodge - | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
but I've decided to add my own angle to it this time and make it fun. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:10
Lucy's humorous take on a hunting lodge combines cool blues, | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
warm browns, with paint effect wood panelling and comical animal art. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
So, this is the mood board I've created for you. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
But first, Lucy had to get her quirky scheme past clients | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
Melanie and David. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
Um, so, the walls are called Celestial Blue. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
I want it to be warm, so I'm adding lots of warm textiles, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
wool tartans, to give it that lodge look. That's lovely, isn't it? | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
And one of the biggest things I'm going to be doing myself is | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
painting you wood panelling on this wall here. Wow! Oh, wow. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
I'm going to try and achieve this trompe l'oeil painted effect | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
with woodgrain, which I've never done before. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
MELANIE LAUGHS But I'm loving the idea of the challenge. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
And that will be these kinds of colours, quite warm browns. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
Lucy also has a plan to hide the '30s fireplace which, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
although not original, is listed. And it's more visual trickery. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
The fireplace is going to be built like a screen to go over your | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
fireplace and you'll be able to move it out of the way to use the fire. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
Oh, brilliant. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:16
And I know you love your dogs | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
and I'm going to do you a piece of artwork, contemporary artwork. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
I don't think there's anything I don't like, to be honest. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
No, I love it! Oh, good! It's so much more than I expected. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Oh, great. It's amazing. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
I love the idea of having a go at trompe l'oeil. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
It's very difficult to do | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
because it's about tricking the eye with perspective and light and | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
shade, and if you get it slightly wrong it can look a complete mess. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
I'm just measuring where I'm going to start the wood panelling | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
on these curvy walls. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
I'm really hoping to get it done today. That's the aim of the game. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
It's going to be a bit... of an experiment. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
An experiment that the homeowners might be slightly regretting. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
I think the biggest risk for us is the painted wall. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:08
Let's hope she can pull it off so it looks authentic. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
But, yeah, I think she's given herself a big task. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Apparently, this is a wallpaper brush. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
But I bought it because I wanted that textured...grainy look. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:23
Yes, I like the risk element. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
Although I wouldn't do a bungee jump. It's funny, that. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
It's not massive bills, but there's quite a few little things. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
Last up is Sarah, a garden designer from Hove. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
Hiya! | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43 | |
In the quarterfinals, Sarah produced a striking scheme, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
and yet she backed the brief and that colour choice was very risky. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
This time we want to see her get those colours spot-on, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
because if she doesn't she won't be going through to the final. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
Before work began, | 0:10:59 | 0:11:00
this living room was a clash of medieval meets modern metropolitan. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
This wasn't what I was expecting. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:07
Well, they've just moved everything from their London flat. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
Have you noticed there's a lot of red? | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Sarah's brief is for a colourful, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
opulent French chateaux style living room with an oriental edge. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
Interesting brief, this one. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
Something French inspired, which is very romantic, very opulent. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
I think quite an unusual choice, considering where we are. Yeah, | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
but it runs in danger of being quite a tacky look if you're not careful. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
Having been asked for colour, Sarah's scheme is her boldest yet, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:36
with tangerine walls, oriental fabrics and black gloss furniture. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
I've really pushed the boat out on this one, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
because if you're ever going to do it, now is the time. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
Right... | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
But first, Sarah has the little matter of getting | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
the go-ahead from Merryn and her husband, choir singer, Andrew. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
So, your brief was music to my ears. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
This is the main colour I'd like to paint the walls. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
Kind of like a peachy orange, isn't it? Mm. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
It's kind of like going to come up | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
and wrap around slightly into the room. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
And then I've got two panels that I'm going to make | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
and they will rest against the walls on both sides. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
One of them is going to be covered in wallpaper and painted gold. Wow. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:18
And the other one, there's this amazing piece of fabric that I found. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
Furniture-wise, I've got you a big French cabinet | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
and that's going to be painted black gloss. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
Also I've bought you two new sofas... | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
Oh, lovely! ..that are French velvet. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
Because I'm slightly taller than average, | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
I find some sofas quite uncomfortable. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
It has to be comfy. It has to be comfy. Yeah. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
There's no point buying new furniture... | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
You probably didn't know I was 6'6". | 0:12:40 | 0:12:41
No, they didn't tell me that. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
On my list of extra measurements, they didn't... LAUGHTER | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
So there's going to be orange on the wall, orange skirting, | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
bright-pink sofa, black accents around the room. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
I'm feeling exhausted already. It is a really full-on scheme. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
I would have taken something a bit more subtle in the colour palette. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
But Sarah's clients like the dazzling scheme. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
On paper, at least. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
It looked really exciting, what she's done. I love the colour. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
It is bright. It's going to be full of happiness. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
Look at the colour! How does that not make you happy? | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
You know, they've asked for colour, | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
so I'm going to deliver what they want and more. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
All the designers are busy fighting for a place in the final. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
Do you think the shelving could actually finish by here? | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
Their schemes are just the latest addition | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
to these 700-year-old houses. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
Picture a medieval home | 0:13:37 | 0:13:38
and you'd probably conjure up images of a crooked timber-framed house. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
These medieval houses, though, are completely different. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
They're regular, they're uniform, in terraces, and made of stone. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
It's astonishing to think they were begun in 1348 for members | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
of the vicar's choral, which sang in the cathedral just over there. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:57
The terraces nearly didn't get finished at all when the Black Death | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
swept through Wells, wiping out much of the workforce. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
The buildings between the houses | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
and the cathedral still show what life was like in the vicar's choral. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:11
In here is the vicar's hall, where the musicians had their meals. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
That chest over there is actually a medieval bread bin. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
There must have been an awful lot of bread. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
And over there, during mealtimes, | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
Bible readings would have taken place. And over here... | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
..there's a passageway that takes the choristers over the street | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
back to the cathedral at the end of the meal, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
so they didn't have to mingle with the hoi polloi. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
From medieval to Mackintosh. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
Frankie's white walls are being prepped for his intricate mural. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
While he has taken on a task that suits him much better. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
Oh! Did somebody put a tissue paper in there? | 0:14:53 | 0:14:58
Making cushions from second-hand jackets. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
I'm going to stitch this seam to make it nice and neat, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
but I don't want to see the thread. This is called blind stitch. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
So, literally, the thread disappears. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:16
I think in the winter time... | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
you could actually put your pockets...to keep your hand warm. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:26
I think this has got a very special sense of humour. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
Frankie has impressed throughout the competition with his precise | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
use of textiles. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
Fabric, you know, is my best friend. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
It allows me to do some of the small detail like this. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
But he's been in trouble when he's kept things safe. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
It's time for him to stop relying on those fabrics and show us | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
his true creativity. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
He has proved he's got an edgy side, though, with amazing results. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
You've got a big smile on your face! Yeah! | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
It's really dramatic, isn't it? | 0:15:57 | 0:15:59
I'm curious. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
Frankie has gone to Mackintosh for inspiration for a 14th century | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
house in Wells. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
And I'm wondering why. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
I always say I'm just throwing you a curveball. OK, I accept that. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
I've just been hit by it in the face, actually! | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
I thought, you know, we don't have too far to go now. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:21
Perhaps this will be my very last chance. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
LUCY: Oh, no, I've got some thingies for you! You've got that? | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
Yeah, if I can find the box. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
In Lucy's hunting lodge living room, | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
the 1930s fireplace is being measured up for its fake face-lift. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
Look at these nice things. Oh, lovely! | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
?5 each off t'internet. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Also beginning to take shape is Lucy's faux wood panelling. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
We've got a base coat of a light brown and now I'm putting | 0:16:47 | 0:16:51
a darker brown on top, | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
then I'm going to make it look like wood panelling. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
Using a plastic rocker that can cost as little as ?5, | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
the top layer of darker paint is scraped back... | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
Ta-da! | 0:17:03 | 0:17:04
..to leave woodgrain effect. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
I quite like it. It's going to be all right. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
And it's quite quick, which suits me. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
Lucy has shown her artistic roots throughout the competition, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
impressing with handcrafted schemes. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
What I'm trying to do, I think, is get it really dark | 0:17:21 | 0:17:25
in the middle and fade out, so it's a bit like a bike wheel planet. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
But sometimes her ambitious ideas have led to her attention to | 0:17:28 | 0:17:32
detail being questioned. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
The patterns in the panels just looks a bit like she's done | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
it with a dry flat brush. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
This time, her paint effects must be perfect. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:43
Trompe l'oeil means trick of the eye. Mm. You're playing a trick. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:48
It's a theatrical trick to actually look like you've got real | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
wood panelling with shadowing round the edges and everything else. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
I've never done this before. It's a risk. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
I just think it's another skill that I've never used, | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
so I just want to try and prove to myself that I can do it. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:05
It's risky mixing the real with fake, and that's what Lucy is doing. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:09
Now, she can be sloppy at times, | 0:18:09 | 0:18:11
and if she's not accurate with the finish, it will look a mess. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
Sometimes you just get on with it and you think you're doing OK | 0:18:14 | 0:18:18
and then they sort of knock you back a bit ten paces. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
I think it'll be fine if it all comes together, but... | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
Um, it is challenging. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:27
Sarah has also given herself a tough task. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
She's priming several pieces of furniture ready to give them | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
a new look that will hopefully tone down her bright-orange walls. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
I want it to be black gloss because if you're going to fill a room | 0:18:43 | 0:18:47
full of colour and pattern, then black is | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
a kind of a way of bringing it down and giving it real class. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
From the very first round, Sarah has been bold with colour. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
What a gorgeous colour. Good job! Like it! | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
She's often pushed her clients to be brave, mainly with success. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:08
You feel OK about the colour? Good. It's good. Really good. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
I like it. I like the putty colour. SARAH LAUGHS | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
But taking risks could end her time in the competition. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
Now, your client is 6'6". | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
And I know he's concerned about whether those sofas are going | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
to be comfortable for his height. Do you think you've got it right? | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
I don't think he's going to have any trouble with comfort. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
But you got them online, right? I did buy them online, yeah. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
You didn't get the luxury of trying them out. No, I didn't. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
But have you pulled that off? | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
I don't know yet, I still haven't seen them. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
Oh, haven't you?! You're totally blagging it! | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
It's not just Sarah's sofas that will be a surprise. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
With a place in the final at stake, the judges have set a sneaky | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
challenge to see how far the designers have come since round one. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:56
Absolutely don't want to think about what they're going to ask me today. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
I'm so not happy. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
It is incredible what you can do when you're under pressure. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
But I don't like it. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
We know that these designers have raw talent, but we want to | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
assess how much they've learnt during the competition. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
Give me some good news. OK. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
I've got a challenge for you. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
It doesn't sound very attractive at all. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
So this time, the object they'll be asked to upcycle... | 0:20:21 | 0:20:25
Do you remember this? | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
..is exactly the same as they received in their very first heat. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
Do you recognise this? Yeah! | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
For Lucy, it's a wooden crate. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
Here we come again. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
Frankie gets a vintage tennis racket. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
Oh, I don't believe it! | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
Do you remember this? Yeah, how could you forget it? | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
And Sarah, a wooden barrel. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
This time I want it to be even bigger... | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
and better. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:53
My life within a bucket. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:55
HE LAUGHS | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
It's just a total deja vu. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
It's... This is so bad. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
The items must fit their final schemes | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
and prove what they've learned across the competition. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
Bit minging. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
It means I can give it a second chance and try | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
and do something better than last time. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
No ideas at the moment at all. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
Blank. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:20
As day one draws to a close, the designers are one step closer | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
to finding out who won't be going through to the final. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:32
Did you get your upcycle challenge? Yeah. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
Was it the thing in your first round? Yes. You had that too? Yeah. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
I had a tennis racket. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:39
LAUGHTER | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
Brilliant! | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
With his walls still wet, Frankie is not all smiles, though. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
I thought I could have time to paint the mural today, | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
but unfortunately the paint, you know, | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
doesn't get dry quick enough, so I guess that's something I can rush. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
Lucy's wood effect panelling still needs a lot of work. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
It's still looking a bit basic. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
I'm worried that I won't be able to make it as good as it should be. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
While Sarah is primed and ready to go. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:14
Right, that's me done for the day, I think. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
Big day tomorrow. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:18
I'm going for a pint! | 0:22:20 | 0:22:21
ORGAN PLAYS | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
It's the start of the second day of competition | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
and our designers have been getting creative. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
Suit fabric cushions, panelling paint effects | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
and the first signs of orange have all gone in. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
But they can't rest on their laurels | 0:22:48 | 0:22:49
if they want to get through to the final. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
Helping Sophie and Daniel make their decision is one of the | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
country's leading experts on pattern and design, guest judge, Orla Keily. | 0:22:55 | 0:23:00
I want to see a designer who has talent | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
but also has the passion to go further after this competition. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
Only two can go through to the final. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
Oh, God, I hope this colour doesn't go off. It's insane. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
The biggest concerns are getting paint on the walls, | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
getting things painted so I can just put that away and forget about it | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
and get on. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
Oh, it's rather lush, isn't it? Well done! | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
Feeling nervous about the competition | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
and what the other designers are doing. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
I really just want to crack on. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
This morning the biggest thing is the mural. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
I'm actually feeling really, really tired. I feel like... | 0:23:35 | 0:23:40
..not really myself. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
At Sarah's, with her boldest and brightest colour choice to date | 0:23:44 | 0:23:50
all over the walls, there's no going back. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
I mean, it's pretty insane at the moment. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
It is definitely going to divide opinion. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
Yeah, it's like an orange bomb has gone off in an orange factory. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
Hoping another risky decision will pay off, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
Sarah is finally getting to test out her new sofas... | 0:24:05 | 0:24:10
Oh... | 0:24:10 | 0:24:11 | |
..for her 6'6" client. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
Wicked. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:18
I think he could learn to love these. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
But can the judges learn to love her bright-orange walls? | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
That is a strong colour. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
Well, the homeowner says she likes to experiment with colours - | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
she's got it. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:32
But they also asked for something elegant, French, chinoiserie. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:37
This isn't on brief! | 0:24:37 | 0:24:39
No, this feels like a cheap holiday villa, doesn't it? | 0:24:39 | 0:24:41
I think it needs a bit more lightness, actually. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
Lucy is also being bold with paint, with her trompe l'oeil panelling. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:51
I'm trying to build up layers of different tones. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
She's about to find out if it's a success or not, | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
as her homeowners pay a visit. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
Hello. Morning. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:01
Oh, gosh. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
It looks amazing. Well, it's not finished. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
I'm just adding... That was the first layer. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
And then I'm kind of adding and adding to make it more subtle. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
Is that actually painted along the top? | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
It looks like, really looks like wood. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:16
That's painted, it's all painted. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
I really like it. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:21
The trompe l'oeil looks really good, actually. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
I'm really pleased with it. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:24
It's a good job, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:25
as the fake fireplace is getting the same treatment. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
I'm going to try and paint this brick-look here. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
You see, that's three-dimensional. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
So I'm doing another bit of my trompe l'oeil. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
Being so ambitious though... | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
I hate that middle bit. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
I'm wondering if... | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
..is starting to take its toll. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
I'm trying to just keep going and going and going and going. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:53
I really hope Lucy hasn't taken on too much, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
cos she looks absolutely exhausted. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
We have been urging her to edit down her ideas. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
I hope she's left enough fuel in the tank to finish this project | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
to the really high standard that we expect. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
Tired. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
The judges are also expecting to see how much each designer | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
has learned at this semifinal stage. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
So they've given each of them | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
the same object they received in the very first round to repurpose. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
It'd be nice to do as least cuttage as possible. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
Lucy turned her wooden crate into a futuristic television unit in her heat. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:32
She's given it a modern edge. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:33
I think it looks naff. Do you? Yeah. Oh, I love it. I think it's really cool. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:37
This time she's taken the crate to pieces | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
and turned it into a drinks tray. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
Funnily enough, I wanted a tray, | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
so it's kind of handy when I got the box to upcycle. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:49
To tie her creation into her hunting lodge theme, | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
she adds some rustic fabrics to the wood | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
and decorates with woodland animals. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
I'm just sewing on these dear little deers, | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
just cos I want to sit down doing silly things. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
I'm really impressed how Lucy has integrated her upcycle project completely within the scheme. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:09
It's using the right colours and elements, | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
and it's actually going to be really useful in there. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
It is, but it's a tray, and I just don't think it's that innovative. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
This upcycle I think is a bit better than the first one I made, | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
I'm hoping. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
I've kind of forgotten. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
I used to do this when I was a kid, pretend I'm a musician. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
Frankie turned his vintage tennis racket into a swing-out sidetable. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
What an ingenious idea. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:35
And being able to tuck it away means the joke is not always on display. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:40
This time he has other plans. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:42
Maybe just a table lamp. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
With the tennis string-stretchers turned into a frame... | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
Oh, you've done it! There we go, sir. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
Wow. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:53 | |
That's pretty good. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
Frankie can give it a coat of white paint, | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
with a little Mackintosh detail. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
Finally, fabric fan Frankie finishes it off with a piece of blue fire retardant material. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:05
I like the way that he sort of reinvented the shape of it. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
It's almost something that Mackintosh would have made. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
It just works perfectly. And doing it white too is absolutely correct. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:16
Hey! It works. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:18
HE LAUGHS | 0:28:18 | 0:28:21
I want to start by taking it apart | 0:28:21 | 0:28:22
because I've got this idea that maybe we'll try | 0:28:22 | 0:28:24
and make a lampshade, cos I could do with another lampshade. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
In her heat, Sarah transformed her wooden barrel into a book bucket. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:32
Never thought of having a bucket for books. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
This time she's chosen to completely dismantle it, | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
and, just like her rival Frankie, use the wood to make a table light... | 0:28:38 | 0:28:41
Cool. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:43 | |
That's great. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
..which she's spraying in black gloss. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
I wanted it to be a kind of Japanese fan. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:52
She's created an object of real sculptural quality and very elegant. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
I think the transformation is excellent. | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
I'll never get a job as a car spray salesman, but... | 0:29:00 | 0:29:03
..it'll do. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:05
All the designers have impressed, but the real test for these | 0:29:05 | 0:29:09
upcycled creations is how well they integrate into their final rooms. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:13
I just don't know why I'm putting myself through this. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:21
In Frankie's room, his decorator is busy turning the alcoves red. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:26
So it's down to Frankie to deliver the Mackintosh mural. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:29
It is quite intricate, | 0:29:29 | 0:29:31
but I have to crack on because I don't have the whole day. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
Despite being a perfectionist, | 0:29:34 | 0:29:36
Frankie has decided to freestyle his design, | 0:29:36 | 0:29:38
instead of using a ready-cut stencil. | 0:29:38 | 0:29:41
It's looking all right. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:42
There's still, you know, imperfections, | 0:29:42 | 0:29:44
so that we'll touch up later with a white. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:48
And then make sure the lines are nice and clean. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
Oh, my gosh, I'm so tired. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:56
And this is just my first one. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
But good design takes time, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
as history proves. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
Old streets always get chopped and changed over the centuries, | 0:30:03 | 0:30:05
and this 700-year-old one is no exception. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:08
Those imposing octagonal chimneys were added in the 15th century | 0:30:08 | 0:30:12
by the same person that carved those crests. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:16
The Georgians came along and they blocked-up doorways, | 0:30:16 | 0:30:18
they added porches, they replaced those narrow medieval windows with sashes. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:22
But there was one house which is very, very close | 0:30:22 | 0:30:24
to the 14th century original, through here. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
And it's pretty much perfect. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:32
Tiny bit lower. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:40
There. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:41
Perfection is exactly what Sarah is after for her rather tall client. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:45
6'7". | 0:30:46 | 0:30:48 | |
I think 6'7" is fine, actually. Yeah? Yeah. | 0:30:48 | 0:30:52
Unless he's wearing heels, he'll clear it. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
The light may not be a risk, but the orange walls are. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
And her clients are about to see the colour up for the first time. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
This is the stage where the homeowner does get nervous, | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
if there's ever going to be a stage. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:09
Hello. Hello. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:11
It's colourful. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:12
How are you? SARAH LAUGHS | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
It's certainly brightened it up. I said I wanted colour, so... You did! | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
And we got colour. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:19
The colour itself is not so much an issue, | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
it's just there was a lot of it and nothing to break it up. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
So let's hold out and see what's next. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
What Sarah is planning on breaking up the orange with - | 0:31:27 | 0:31:30
lacquered black oriental furniture and two bold freestanding panels. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:35
Sarah is attaching green, yellow and pink | 0:31:35 | 0:31:38
bamboo printed fabric to an MDF board. Wow. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:41
Cos we can't put anything on the walls, | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
the panels are going to bring colour and texture | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
and really break up that tangerine. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:51
That is so cool. | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
The second panel is embossed wallpaper, | 0:31:53 | 0:31:55
which is being painted gold. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
I would so have this room at my house. | 0:31:57 | 0:31:59
I'm going to go home and paint everything tangerine and gold. | 0:32:00 | 0:32:04
Like a takeaway restaurant. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:06
Lucy is also toying with the idea of an unconventional wall panel. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:15
It's going to be stretched onto a canvas... | 0:32:15 | 0:32:19
And I'm not sure whether it might be a bridge too far. | 0:32:21 | 0:32:25
But I like it. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:26
The doggy decor doesn't stop there. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:30
So I've got some photos of the dog, | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
and I did some illustrations of him, some quick water colours, | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
and then that's paper and I've collaged him | 0:32:36 | 0:32:39
onto an old needlepoint tapestry thing, | 0:32:39 | 0:32:44
and then I've made him a jumper and a jacket for some reason. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:47
And a hat. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:49
Lucy's goal is for her menagerie of kitsch animal accessories | 0:32:49 | 0:32:53
to add a modern and fun twist to her hunting lodge living room. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:57
And I think that'll be fine. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:01
Oh, that's right. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:07
Christmas arrives early. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:09
So these are the reproduction of the Mackintosh chair. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:13
You can see how high the back is. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:16
There's no time to sit down on the job | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
with so much of his mural still to do. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:21
Wow. Still got lots to do. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:25
That is a lot of work. Yeah. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
It's hard to make it exactly the same mirror to that side. Yeah. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:32
How you feeling? Stress. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:35
Murals look like hard work. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
I... | 0:33:40 | 0:33:41 | |
I feel a little bit of regret about why do I | 0:33:41 | 0:33:44
put so much work for myself? | 0:33:44 | 0:33:47
I really don't want to blow it, | 0:33:47 | 0:33:48
but I'm so scared I might be. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:51
I just constantly tell myself I have to keep going. | 0:33:51 | 0:33:55
So this is Frankie going at it with all guns blazing. | 0:33:55 | 0:33:59
You are out there... Absolutely. It's just like... | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
HE IMITATES GUNSHOT | 0:34:01 | 0:34:04
You're going to blow them away. Absolutely. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:07
It's not just our designers making their mark in these homes. | 0:34:07 | 0:34:10
450 years ago they went through another huge change. | 0:34:10 | 0:34:15
These houses were originally built as one up, one down bachelor pads, | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
with an external staircase around the back made of wood connecting the two rooms. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:21
But the Reformation changed all that. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:25
All of a sudden, the vicars choral, shock horror, were allowed to marry, | 0:34:25 | 0:34:30
and 30 of these original bachelor pads | 0:34:30 | 0:34:32
were converted into family homes. | 0:34:32 | 0:34:34
This is one of the houses that was enlarged in the 16th century. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:39
It's much bigger and grander than most, | 0:34:39 | 0:34:41
and it contains something very special through here. | 0:34:41 | 0:34:44
In this room there is an impressive 15th century mural - | 0:34:46 | 0:34:49
a stylised depiction of vegetation. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:53
Originally it would probably have been multicoloured, but only | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
the red remains, the hardest wearing of the medieval dyes. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:59
Fading dyes are the last thing on Frankie's mind. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
He's still got to get his design on the ceiling, | 0:35:04 | 0:35:06
and there's a problem. | 0:35:06 | 0:35:08
That lighting is not actually sitting right in the centre... | 0:35:09 | 0:35:13
..of the fireplace. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:17
Frankie had planned to paint a controlled stripe design | 0:35:19 | 0:35:22
across the ceiling, perfectly framing the light fitting. | 0:35:22 | 0:35:26
If that is not symmetrical that will look really, really bizarre. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:33
So I... | 0:35:33 | 0:35:34
Yeah, I need to change my plan. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
Oh, sorry. | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
The end of the day is fast approaching, | 0:35:48 | 0:35:50
and for Lucy's playful hunting lodge panel, there are more casualties... | 0:35:50 | 0:35:54
Oh, he's cute though. Look. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
..to get her a step closer to the grand final. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:00
I would love to do it again, if I could. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:04
But... | 0:36:04 | 0:36:05
I just want to be prepared to go home as well. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
You know? | 0:36:09 | 0:36:10
I hope I've done enough to get through. But you never know. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:15
It's a pretty out-there room. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:19
Tomorrow is a very, very big day. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:22
But I believe if I'm good enough in the judges' eyes then I will be through. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:29
But if I'm not good enough then I'll be heading home. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:34
It's the last day of the semifinal, and our three contestants have | 0:36:42 | 0:36:46
been working round the clock to impress the judges. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
The stakes are high - only two can go through to the final stage. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
I've come this far, you know? | 0:36:55 | 0:36:57
I've put everything into it, everything. | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
It's been amazing, but I want it. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
I'm generally nervous. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:04
Just try and not think about it too much so I can focus | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
and get on with the room. | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
I'm not on track at all. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:11
I'm feeling quite panicky and... | 0:37:11 | 0:37:14
Yeah, I just have to keep on cracking. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
They still don't know it yet, but guest judge | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
contemporary designer Orla Kiely, is on her way. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
I want to see their skill, their creativity, | 0:37:25 | 0:37:27
but above all I want to see a designer | 0:37:27 | 0:37:29
who looks at things with absolutely fresh eyes. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
Before she arrives, | 0:37:33 | 0:37:35
the Queen of Pattern is taking her first look at the designers' schemes, | 0:37:35 | 0:37:39
starting with Frankie. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:40
Looking at Frankie's mood board, | 0:37:40 | 0:37:43
I do like the Macintosh reference, | 0:37:43 | 0:37:45
but it can't have any messed up edges, it needs to be sharp. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:49
With so much of his mural to do, Frankie is under pressure. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:54
I'm very, very... I'm feeling very stressed at the moment. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:57
I just had to touch that up. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
How's Frankie's grand European hotel looking today? | 0:38:07 | 0:38:10
Well, it's looking very unfinished, | 0:38:10 | 0:38:13
considering he's only got a couple of hours left | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
and he's still decorating. | 0:38:15 | 0:38:16
I'm very concerned for him. | 0:38:16 | 0:38:18
Looking at Lucy's board, | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
I'm kind of wondering about the choice of furniture and accessories. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:27
There's a lot going on. You don't have do have something everywhere. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:32
The cuckoo clock could go on here... | 0:38:32 | 0:38:34
But Lucy hopes she'll get the balance right, | 0:38:34 | 0:38:37
as she brings in all her quirky accessories. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
CUCKOO CLOCK CALLS Yeah! | 0:38:40 | 0:38:42
That is hilarious. I think it's looking OK. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:48
It's quite crowded, but I quite like that. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
I maybe need to step back and edit a bit at the end. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:55
Now, Lucy has always been a bit of a whirling dervish, hasn't she? | 0:38:57 | 0:39:00
Full of energy. How's she whirling today? | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
You know, usually at this point in the process we'd see Lucy | 0:39:02 | 0:39:06
in a blind panic, but that seems to be a thing of the past. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:09
She's already dressing her room, and she's bringing in stacks of stuff. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:12
Now, we know with Lucy she does tend to overstuff a scheme, | 0:39:12 | 0:39:16
and I'm really hoping she's not going to do that this time. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
I love that Sarah is brave with colour, | 0:39:21 | 0:39:24
and I think it can be a very difficult thing sometimes to pull off. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
If not done, kind of, carefully it might look tacky. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
To tone down the orange, Sarah is making cushions... | 0:39:31 | 0:39:34
multicoloured cushions... | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
Now that's bling, isn't it? | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
..to go on the dusty pink sofas. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:41
Even I was saying I wasn't panicking yesterday, but there was a moment | 0:39:41 | 0:39:44
where I was like, "Oh, this is really extreme colour." | 0:39:44 | 0:39:48
But now everything is coming in, | 0:39:48 | 0:39:50
so we're just going to soften it and it'll be storming. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:54
I'm excited. | 0:39:54 | 0:39:56
Sarah's always been uber-slick. | 0:39:56 | 0:39:57
So is she pulling off another polished scheme this time? | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
Sarah does go for these really bold schemes, | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
but somehow, with her lovely styling and use of lots and lots | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
of accessories to soften the look, she often brings back the balance. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:10
It could work, but... | 0:40:10 | 0:40:12
I've still got fears about it. | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
With Orla having scrutinised the designs, | 0:40:16 | 0:40:19
one thing remains - | 0:40:19 | 0:40:20
to meet the designers. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:22
Frankie. Yes? | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
The judges would like to see you. | 0:40:24 | 0:40:25
Right now? | 0:40:25 | 0:40:27
I've no idea. Maybe another judge. That would be lovely. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:37
Designers, standing right in front of me | 0:40:39 | 0:40:42
is the winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge. | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
But first, you've got to earn your place in the final. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
The stakes are high and the decision rests with our two judges. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:53
So to help them, they've called in some serious heavyweight design clout. | 0:40:53 | 0:40:57
She's been delivering world-class design for over 20 years, | 0:40:59 | 0:41:03
culminating in her being awarded an OBE. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
Her talent knows no bounds. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:08
From dressing royalty to giving us | 0:41:08 | 0:41:10
one of the most iconic prints of our era. | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
Designers, this time you're going to be judged by Orla Kiely. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:18
Oh, wow. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
So nice to be here. | 0:41:27 | 0:41:29
Very excited. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:30
And as this is the semifinal, | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
from my point of view, looking for really interesting ideas, | 0:41:33 | 0:41:37
and a beautiful execution. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:39
So good luck. | 0:41:39 | 0:41:40
The judges just keep on throwing surprises again and again. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:48
This is the semifinal, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
and I just can't take it any more. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
I think she'll probably be looking for good colour, | 0:41:53 | 0:41:55
I know she likes orange. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:57
I'm extremely nerve-wracked now, because she is such a big name | 0:41:57 | 0:42:03
and someone I admire so much that | 0:42:03 | 0:42:05
now I'm just scared stiff. | 0:42:05 | 0:42:08
Because if she doesn't like it I'm going to really feel quite gutted. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:13
CLOCK CHIMES | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
With time almost up, Lucy must prove the judges' earlier concerns | 0:42:18 | 0:42:21
about her finish are unfounded. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
Down half an inch. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:26
She's had ?1,500 and three days. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:30
Down, down. God, down. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
That's it. Oh, it's fab. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:35
But when it comes to her finishing kitsch touches, it's hard to stop. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:39
I'm quite pleased with it. It's crowded but I don't mind that. | 0:42:39 | 0:42:44
I'm never 100% happy with anything, so it's hard to say. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
But I'm pleased that I've put myself into it, | 0:42:54 | 0:42:58
and the fun elements that I hope they'll like. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:00
Lucy's brief was to create a cosy hunting lodge-themed living room. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:04
Three days ago, the room was very beige and rather bland. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:09
Now it's cosy and kitsch, with a soft blue and brown scheme. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:15
The back wall has been hand-painted to create a wood-panelled trompe l'oeil, | 0:43:15 | 0:43:20
paint effects continue on the fake fireplace, | 0:43:20 | 0:43:24
which hides the old 1930s mantelpiece. | 0:43:24 | 0:43:26
And Lucy has added a touch of hunting humour with quirky accessories - | 0:43:28 | 0:43:32
from her pooch portrait to her stuffed toy wall hanging. | 0:43:32 | 0:43:35
I actually believe now that I could go through. | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
Yeah. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:41 | |
I want to believe that I could. | 0:43:41 | 0:43:44
Time for Sophie and Daniel and Orla to see the room. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:48
As far as the wood-panel effect wall is concerned, | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
I like the fact that she's taken the time to do it herself. | 0:43:57 | 0:44:00
It's a one-off, it's bespoke. | 0:44:00 | 0:44:01
Yeah, it does. It's turned out well. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
We've also got this fireplace. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:06
Hidden underneath that is a 1930s tiled fireplace. | 0:44:06 | 0:44:10
And, again, she's got this trompe l'oeil theme going through. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:13
Oh, I see. That's really ambitious, but it works. | 0:44:13 | 0:44:16
She's covered it up. Yeah. | 0:44:16 | 0:44:18
I do think this room though is running in danger of being overly cluttered. | 0:44:18 | 0:44:22
And we know what Lucy's like - she can't resist it. | 0:44:22 | 0:44:24
But I think, funnily enough, in this scheme clutter is OK, | 0:44:24 | 0:44:28
and I think she has left some kind of spaces that are clear. | 0:44:28 | 0:44:31
Because I think that's very important - | 0:44:31 | 0:44:33
to have space to breathe from clutter - | 0:44:33 | 0:44:35
and I think she's focused it quite well into certain zones. | 0:44:35 | 0:44:38
I'm desperately looking for that space to have my breath. There. | 0:44:38 | 0:44:40
It's actually behind you, Daniel. | 0:44:40 | 0:44:43
The judges also have to assess the success of Lucy's upcycled crate. | 0:44:43 | 0:44:48
This integrates brilliantly in the room though, doesn't it? | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
The fabrics, the motifs, the rustic materials. Beautifully made. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:55
Yeah, that's really nice. I think that's nice. But what is that? | 0:44:55 | 0:44:58
It's a crime, isn't it? It's playful. Oh! It is playful. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:02
Is it playing up the sort of hunting lodge thing? | 0:45:02 | 0:45:04
You know, usually you'd see a stag's head and things like that. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:08
So it's kind of like a bit of a joke on that. | 0:45:08 | 0:45:12
I think I've got the brief right. | 0:45:12 | 0:45:14
Whether there's small elements that the residents may not like as much, | 0:45:14 | 0:45:19
I'm not sure. So who knows? | 0:45:19 | 0:45:22
What all the homeowners think will count towards the judges' decision. | 0:45:22 | 0:45:26
Come in. Thank you. Goodness me. | 0:45:26 | 0:45:29
That's amazing. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:31
I don't know what to look at first. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:33
Oh, love it. I love it. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:35
I could almost cry. | 0:45:35 | 0:45:38
It's your home, isn't it? It's a personal thing. | 0:45:38 | 0:45:41
That fire is brilliant. How has she done that? | 0:45:41 | 0:45:43
Yeah, I feel quite emotional, really. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:47
I've never had a house with a room like this before. | 0:45:47 | 0:45:49
I've always had functional rooms, and someone has come in here | 0:45:49 | 0:45:52
and they've put heart and soul into it, | 0:45:52 | 0:45:54
but they've done it using our heart, | 0:45:54 | 0:45:57
and then they've put their soul into getting it right for us. | 0:45:57 | 0:46:00
This is very, very difficult. | 0:46:05 | 0:46:06
Frankie's time is almost up and the accuracy | 0:46:06 | 0:46:09
of his mural is paying the price. | 0:46:09 | 0:46:12
That is just messy and that's not me. | 0:46:12 | 0:46:15
But it will have to do as he has just moments | 0:46:19 | 0:46:21
to finish dressing his room. | 0:46:21 | 0:46:23
I'm literally just running out of energy now | 0:46:23 | 0:46:25
and I just can't do any more. | 0:46:25 | 0:46:27
Done. | 0:46:31 | 0:46:32 | |
The execution, possibly, a little bit let me down. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:38
But I spent every single second. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:41
Overall, I did my very best. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:45
Frankie's brief was for a grand European hotel feel | 0:46:45 | 0:46:49
with a touch of Cool Britannia. | 0:46:49 | 0:46:52
Three days ago the room was cosy but cluttered. | 0:46:52 | 0:46:55
Now, Frankie has given it a Mackintosh makeover. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:04
Inspired by the Union Jack, the walls have been painted | 0:47:04 | 0:47:07
bright red, brilliant white, with accents of a blue-grey. | 0:47:07 | 0:47:12
A hand-painted mural runs across walls and ceiling, | 0:47:12 | 0:47:15
from fireplace to piano. | 0:47:15 | 0:47:18
And the scheme is completed with edgy LED lighting along the | 0:47:18 | 0:47:21
picture rail and cushions made from suits. | 0:47:21 | 0:47:25
I don't really know what Orla Kiely would think about my room. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:28
As long as she could pick out one or two good things, | 0:47:28 | 0:47:32
I will be very happy. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:35
Well, it's done, which is a relief. | 0:47:40 | 0:47:42
Yes. I'm pleasantly surprised. I think it looks great. | 0:47:42 | 0:47:45
I mean, I think the stencil is interesting | 0:47:45 | 0:47:49
but it does look quite rough. | 0:47:49 | 0:47:51
You know, clean lines would have been really expected. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:54
But the stripe round the edge does work quite well. | 0:47:54 | 0:47:56
It's probably a big, you know, big task to try and do it beautifully. | 0:47:56 | 0:48:01
One of the things we love about Frankie | 0:48:01 | 0:48:03
is he's absolutely brilliant with a sewing machine. | 0:48:03 | 0:48:06
I do like the cushions. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:07
I like the colours, I like the idea of the suiting with pockets. | 0:48:07 | 0:48:11
Yeah, that's cute. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:12
It's quite quirky. I have to say, a bit of a giggle. | 0:48:12 | 0:48:15
It is, it's funny. | 0:48:15 | 0:48:16
His cushions may suit his scheme but does his upcycled lamp? | 0:48:16 | 0:48:20
This is Frankie's upcycle | 0:48:20 | 0:48:22
and I think he's integrated it into the scheme really, really well. | 0:48:22 | 0:48:25
It's definitely got that Mackintosh look. It's slightly utilitarian, | 0:48:25 | 0:48:28
it goes with this very stark interior. | 0:48:28 | 0:48:30
So he's blended the two very well. Yeah, it's very nice. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:33
My only reservation is the amount of white. | 0:48:33 | 0:48:36
I don't quite understand why there is so much white. | 0:48:36 | 0:48:40
I don't think he needed the LED lights. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:42
I would have stopped before adding those. | 0:48:42 | 0:48:45
It's a difficult one, this. | 0:48:45 | 0:48:46
My impression was good, it's only when you start to... | 0:48:46 | 0:48:49
Pick it apart. | 0:48:49 | 0:48:50
..pick at it that you see where it could have been better. | 0:48:50 | 0:48:54
I hope my homeowner's not going to be too disappointed | 0:48:55 | 0:48:59
but I guess... Yeah, I just hope he will like it and he will enjoy it. | 0:48:59 | 0:49:04
My goodness! | 0:49:04 | 0:49:07
It looks so different. I think the LEDs look fab up here. | 0:49:07 | 0:49:10
What do you think about the mural that Frankie's painted? | 0:49:10 | 0:49:13
I really like it. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:14
I think it really hangs together well. | 0:49:14 | 0:49:17
With her deadline looming, Sarah is busy dressing her room. | 0:49:19 | 0:49:23
Watch out, watch out! Oh! | 0:49:23 | 0:49:25
With both the judges and client overwhelmed by the orange | 0:49:25 | 0:49:27
earlier on, it's vital her styling unifies the whole scheme. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:31
I think that'll do. | 0:49:31 | 0:49:33
That'll do? M-hm. | 0:49:33 | 0:49:35
Planned it! Well done. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:38
Awesome. | 0:49:38 | 0:49:40
This is, like, a one-time opportunity | 0:49:41 | 0:49:43
to really go for it, take risks, | 0:49:43 | 0:49:46
have fun and see where it goes. | 0:49:46 | 0:49:48
There's no point in doing... | 0:49:48 | 0:49:50
I could paint magnolia walls every day of the week if I wanted to. | 0:49:50 | 0:49:53
Sarah's brief was to create a colourful French chateau feel, | 0:49:53 | 0:49:56
with an oriental edge. | 0:49:56 | 0:49:58
Three days ago the room was neat and tidy but lacked much personality. | 0:50:00 | 0:50:05
Now it has impact. | 0:50:08 | 0:50:11
Sarah has used a bright tangerine on the walls | 0:50:14 | 0:50:17
and layered the floor with both neutral and monochrome rugs. | 0:50:17 | 0:50:21
Panels painted gold and covered in Chinese fabric | 0:50:21 | 0:50:24
add interest without damaging the walls. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:28
And she's added black gloss furniture, | 0:50:28 | 0:50:31
two antique sofas and plenty of colourful cushions. | 0:50:31 | 0:50:35
I hope that when the judges see the room they'd walk in and go, | 0:50:35 | 0:50:39
"Now I see why she's painted it that colour." | 0:50:39 | 0:50:42
It's still really orange, right?! | 0:50:46 | 0:50:48
I think it's really cool. I rather like it. | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
I think it's daring and it's quite fun. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:53
I'm not getting the French chateau... Mmm. | 0:50:53 | 0:50:56
I'm sort of feeling more like I'm in some kind of cocktail lounge. | 0:50:56 | 0:50:59
As much as I love orange, I love it in that, kind of, retro '70s way | 0:50:59 | 0:51:04
but somehow that's not what this room is. | 0:51:04 | 0:51:09
But I think the gold screen against the wall | 0:51:09 | 0:51:12
is a nice bridge between the black and the orange. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:16
Yeah, the gold works really nicely, | 0:51:16 | 0:51:17
especially inside the drum lampshade as well, | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
so you get that lovely gold glow coming from the lighting. | 0:51:19 | 0:51:22
She's also got some nice little pieces that she's collected, too. | 0:51:22 | 0:51:25
Yes, I mean, she's sourced perfect accessories that just... | 0:51:25 | 0:51:28
I think they are very cool, actually. | 0:51:28 | 0:51:30
Yeah, they complete the look. Yeah. | 0:51:30 | 0:51:31
The judges also need to see how well Sarah's upcycled barrel | 0:51:31 | 0:51:35
fits with her scheme. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:37
That was a barrel and look at it now. | 0:51:37 | 0:51:39
It looks like some art deco chicness hiding there. | 0:51:39 | 0:51:43
Yeah, I love it and the light it's casting into the alcove | 0:51:43 | 0:51:46
is really effective. | 0:51:46 | 0:51:48
Definitely the best upcycle out of all of them. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:51
Oh, I hope the homeowners love it. They've put their trust in me. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:57
So, yeah... I think they're... | 0:51:57 | 0:51:59
I really think they're going to love it. | 0:51:59 | 0:52:02
Her clients' reaction to the orange will be crucial. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:05
Oh! | 0:52:05 | 0:52:08 | |
Wow! Cool. | 0:52:09 | 0:52:12
It looks amazing! You wanted bright colours. | 0:52:12 | 0:52:14
Yep! You wanted orange, you got orange. | 0:52:14 | 0:52:17
Not too orange? Not too orange. | 0:52:17 | 0:52:19
Actually, I like the way the green offsets the orange. It keeps... | 0:52:19 | 0:52:22
My eye keeps being drawn to the green and I quite like it. | 0:52:22 | 0:52:25
Those sofas are great. Oh, you've got to try it. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:28
I do have to try the sofa, yes. He was worried about... | 0:52:28 | 0:52:30
This is the one because I'm going | 0:52:30 | 0:52:31
to watch the television from here, aren't I? | 0:52:31 | 0:52:34
That'll do, yeah. THEY LAUGH | 0:52:36 | 0:52:40
That's it, there's no more the designers can do | 0:52:40 | 0:52:43
but wait to find out which two will be finalists. | 0:52:43 | 0:52:47
It's a very mixed feeling at the moment | 0:52:47 | 0:52:50
because it's the semi and I could be the one going home. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:54
You know, at the moment I don't have a very good feeling about it. | 0:52:54 | 0:52:59
I've given it my best, so I'm happy with what I've achieved. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:04
I really would love to go through. | 0:53:04 | 0:53:07
I mean, particularly as Orla Kiely is one of the judges. | 0:53:07 | 0:53:10
It's huge! | 0:53:12 | 0:53:14
I guess because she's so successful... | 0:53:14 | 0:53:18
We're approaching the final. | 0:53:23 | 0:53:25
You're demanding a lot of your interior designers now. | 0:53:25 | 0:53:29
Are they delivering? They have ramped it up. | 0:53:29 | 0:53:31
We've seen all three of them really push the boat out this time. | 0:53:31 | 0:53:35
Let's start with Frankie. | 0:53:35 | 0:53:37
For me, the thing about Frankie's space | 0:53:37 | 0:53:39
that I had most difficulty with was the starkness of the white. | 0:53:39 | 0:53:41
I think for a grand hotel concept, | 0:53:41 | 0:53:44
I feel it was very stark and very sterile. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
I mean, I love Frankie's ambition. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:48
I think the ambition with the mural was admirable. | 0:53:48 | 0:53:51
But it did end up looking rather rushed | 0:53:51 | 0:53:52
and I'm so surprised because Frankie's such a perfectionist. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:55
We've come to expect that from him. And, oh, it was a bit smudgy! | 0:53:55 | 0:53:58
The homeowner was very happy. | 0:53:58 | 0:54:00
He loved the mural, he loved the Mackintosh. | 0:54:00 | 0:54:04
It was sad he didn't get to finish it. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:06
What did you think of Lucy's interpretation of a hunting lodge? | 0:54:06 | 0:54:09
Well, it was certainly a contemporary interpretation. | 0:54:09 | 0:54:12
She made lots and lots of different things. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
The energy of this girl is unbelievable. | 0:54:14 | 0:54:16
A step too far for me was the little fluffy toy, | 0:54:16 | 0:54:18
kind of, wall panel moment. | 0:54:18 | 0:54:20
I just thought that looked bizarre, especially where she positioned it. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:24
I suppose if that's the only fault we can find, | 0:54:24 | 0:54:26
she's done pretty well. The homeowners adored it. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:29
They said they brought the heart to the brief | 0:54:29 | 0:54:31
but that Lucy brought the soul. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
Absolutely no surprise in that comment at all. | 0:54:33 | 0:54:36
Well, let's start in Sarah's room with the orange. | 0:54:36 | 0:54:39
You couldn't miss it! | 0:54:39 | 0:54:41
I love designers to be bold with colour, I really do, | 0:54:41 | 0:54:43
because it's a game-changer. | 0:54:43 | 0:54:45
It can really affect the mood and the sense of space | 0:54:45 | 0:54:47
but is she creating the right mood? | 0:54:47 | 0:54:49
I actually loved the colour, I think it was really cool. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:52
But the idea of living in that room every day with that bright orange | 0:54:52 | 0:54:56
might be a little wearing. | 0:54:56 | 0:54:57
The homeowners loved the orange. | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59
Oh, what?! | 0:54:59 | 0:55:01
They asked for bright, they got bright! | 0:55:01 | 0:55:03
Be careful what you wish for. Yes! | 0:55:03 | 0:55:06
But some amazing objects she'd acquired. | 0:55:06 | 0:55:08
She did and she's always very good at styling a room | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
and she did it yet again. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:13
She has a good eye and I think that's very important. | 0:55:13 | 0:55:18
So you've got to make the big decision. | 0:55:18 | 0:55:20
It's going to be pretty sad to lose one of them today. | 0:55:20 | 0:55:23
With Orla's help, though, they've made their decision. | 0:55:24 | 0:55:27
Well done because it's so hard. | 0:55:27 | 0:55:29
I think the true test of real creativity is how you work | 0:55:31 | 0:55:35
under pressure and under constraints. | 0:55:35 | 0:55:38
And all three of you have had to deal with | 0:55:38 | 0:55:40
the pressure of being in the semifinal | 0:55:40 | 0:55:42
and the constraints of working in a Grade I listed building. | 0:55:42 | 0:55:46
I've been very impressed with you all today because | 0:55:46 | 0:55:48
it's so difficult working on a brief like this. | 0:55:48 | 0:55:51
I'd be very, very intrigued to see what you really would do | 0:55:51 | 0:55:55
in the real world. | 0:55:55 | 0:55:57
Sadly, though, there's only room for two in the final. | 0:55:57 | 0:56:01
And the designer we're saying goodbye to today is... | 0:56:01 | 0:56:05
..Frankie. | 0:56:15 | 0:56:17
Thank you very much. | 0:56:17 | 0:56:19
Well done. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:22
Oh, congratulations. We were so glad to meet you. | 0:56:22 | 0:56:26
I got third place. | 0:56:26 | 0:56:28
Oh! | 0:56:28 | 0:56:30 | |
So what do you think? | 0:56:30 | 0:56:32
I really like it. I really like it. | 0:56:32 | 0:56:35
I've loved Frankie throughout this whole competition. | 0:56:35 | 0:56:38
He's the king of fabrics, the master of detail. | 0:56:38 | 0:56:41
However, this time the detail really wasn't there, | 0:56:41 | 0:56:43
which tells me he's not a finalist. | 0:56:43 | 0:56:46
I'm just going to keep trying | 0:56:46 | 0:56:48
and hopefully one day I will really be an interior designer. | 0:56:48 | 0:56:53
It's a dream to me. | 0:56:53 | 0:56:55
I can't believe what you've done! | 0:56:55 | 0:56:57
Oh, thanks so much! | 0:56:57 | 0:56:59
Yes, I'm shocked and surprised but absolutely thrilled. | 0:56:59 | 0:57:02
Maybe, maybe I could win this, who knows? | 0:57:02 | 0:57:06
Lucy managed to deliver a great scheme with very happy homeowners. | 0:57:06 | 0:57:11
I'm not surprised because she's bursting with ideas | 0:57:11 | 0:57:14
and she's going to make a really great finalist. | 0:57:14 | 0:57:17
Hello! Hi! It looks amazing! Do you like it? | 0:57:17 | 0:57:21
Yeah, it's brilliant. | 0:57:21 | 0:57:23
The finals, yes! | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
Bring it on! | 0:57:27 | 0:57:29
I love Sarah's character with the colour, | 0:57:32 | 0:57:34
even if it is a little risky. | 0:57:34 | 0:57:36
Her daring approach to design means she always comes up | 0:57:36 | 0:57:39
with something original. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:40
I seriously cannot wait to see what | 0:57:40 | 0:57:42
she's going come up with in the final. | 0:57:42 | 0:57:44
Next time, the grand final. | 0:57:48 | 0:57:51
For Lucy and Sarah... Yeah! | 0:57:51 | 0:57:53
..their biggest challenge yet. | 0:57:54 | 0:57:57
This is the biggest for a long, long, long, long time. | 0:57:57 | 0:57:59
It's huge! | 0:57:59 | 0:58:01
It couldn't be tougher. | 0:58:01 | 0:58:02
No, something's going wrong here. | 0:58:02 | 0:58:05
She won't let us carry on. | 0:58:05 | 0:58:08
It's got to be puckered. | 0:58:08 | 0:58:09
It looks a little bit amateurish. | 0:58:09 | 0:58:11
Helping decide who deserves to be champion... | 0:58:13 | 0:58:16
It's all falling apart. It's going to look like a mess. | 0:58:16 | 0:58:18
..iconic interior designer Kelly Hoppen. | 0:58:18 | 0:58:21
Too small, too contemporary and doesn't fit. Yeah. | 0:58:21 | 0:58:23
But only one can win. | 0:58:23 | 0:58:26
The winner is... | 0:58:26 | 0:58:28 |
