Here in the UK we're blessed with an enormous variety of types and styles | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
of buildings that we call home, from thatched cottages, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
to 1930s Art Deco apartments. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Regency terraces, to contemporary townhouses. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
But sometimes, while the exterior creates a wow factor, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
the interior can be distinctly lacking. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
So we've gathered together | 0:00:23 | 0:00:24
some of the UK's most talented amateur interior designers | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
to show us what they're made of. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
-I'm actually raring to go. -That looks great. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Argh! | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36 | |
Work quicker, come on! | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
In our first heats, three designers will transform a room each. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:44
But only two will make it through to the next round. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
I'm feeling a little bit nervous now. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Putting them through their paces and scrutinising their every move | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
are judges Daniel Hopwood, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
designer and a director of | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
the British Institute of Interior Design. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
This year, we've got new challenges for the designers. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
We're really going to push them to the limit. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
And internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
As a judge in this competition, I want to see perfection. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
I think I will be quite a hard judge. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
But it's going to take a lot of creativity and hard work | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
to be crowned winner of The Great Interior Design Challenge. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
We're in Pittville, in the beautiful spa town of Cheltenham, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
home to more than 2,500 listed buildings. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
This time, three amateur interior designers | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
have been given the task of transforming a bedroom each | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
in these imposing Regency terraces. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
They'll have just 48 hours... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
-Lovely, let's go. -That's rather good, isn't it? | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
It's not bad, is it? | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
..£1,000... | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
-Look at the size of the list! -No, that's not just for him. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
-That's for us as well. -..and a small team, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
including a builder and decorator... | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Yeah, there, perfect, perfect. Quick, quick, quick. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Is that not upside down? | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
..to complete their transformations. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
I've been up since three o'clock this morning. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Ay, ay, ay... | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
They'll need to work hard to impress... | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
OK, OK, OK. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
..as only two can go through. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
It's not an easy walk in the park, that's for sure. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Hopefully it will be enough. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
I would definitely love to go through. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
In 1716, the discovery of a medicinal spring | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
with healing properties | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
put Cheltenham firmly on the map as a health-giving spa. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
With the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Britain's economy boomed. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
And developers cashed in on Cheltenham's spa town status. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
Joseph Pitt was one such developer | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
and had his own grand plans to create a town. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
Very modestly, he decided to call this town Pittville. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
These grand gates form the entrance to the estate, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
adorned with the motto salubritas eruditio - | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
health and education. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
Construction started in 1825, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
but soon after, the country was plunged into recession, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
meaning the development was never completed. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
Although Pitt's original grand vision was never fully realised, | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
Pittville today is considered to be one of the finest Regency estates | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
in the country. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
And hoping to realise their own grand visions today | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
are our three competitors. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
The first designer is 27-year-old professional dog walker Katie, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
who has an eclectic style. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
I'd definitely say my style is vintage, | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
because anything that's old now is vintage. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
And I would definitely say there's an element of rock and roll | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
because I like pops of colour, clashing prints. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
Although all the designers have had their briefs for just over a week, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
this will be the first time they'll be seeing the rooms in person. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
Wow. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20 | |
Katie's task is to make over this bland bedroom | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
for homeowners Guy and Jane. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
I originally said sort of Versailles or Provencal-type theme. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
It's a really nice room, it's really bright. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
It's brighter than I thought it would be, so it's really nice. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
I can't imagine it being a nightmare vision, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
but anything too gaudy, anything too...gold or too much. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:42
So slightly ornate but calm, not too ditsy. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
Now I've seen the room and it's actually come alive in my mind, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
other than just looking at a picture, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
I'm super-excited to get going. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
Judging how well she puts forward her designs | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
and adapts to her clients' needs | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
are interior architect Dan Hopwood and Kelly Hoppen, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
renowned for her neutral palettes. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
Thank you for letting me come into your house and do your room. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
It's a pleasure to meet you. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
This is the plan I have for your room. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
-Wow! -I know you said in your brief | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
that your wardrobe doors were a little bit rickety? | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
The whole wardrobe's rickety! | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
So your doors, I'm actually going to make one big door. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
-Cos I know you said you quite like the French sort of feel. -Yes. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
I'm going to challenge you a little bit, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
cos I know you said you didn't want dark colours, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
but I've actually gone for this slightly darker grey on this wall. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
But you won't see that much of it because I'm actually going to do | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
some gold-painted stripes on the wall. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
-You see a lot of stripes in the Regency decor. -Yes. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
I actually want to paint this ceiling | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
this very light peach colour to just make it feel a bit warmer. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
The only colour I'm a little bit...apprehensive about | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
is that colour, really. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
Erm... | 0:05:56 | 0:05:57
Are you willing to let me try a little bit for you? | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
-Yeah. No, try it. -OK, thank you for that. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
A really elegant presentation by Katie. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
The brief was complex insomuch that we had Versailles and the Riviera. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:14
There was a lot going on on that board, | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
but for me, the thing that stood out that I just can't bear, | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
and the client didn't like, was this peach colour. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
I couldn't see where that went. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:23
Peach was big in the '80s, | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
and I'm really not sure that we're ready for it to come back yet. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
I'm certainly not! | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
I think, Steve, if you want to get started on the paintwork? | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
Katie's 48 hours have begun. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
She's ready to recreate a French revolution in this Regency room. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
She jumps straight in, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
outlining her brief to create the single armoire doors. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
-I wanted to make one big door. -Ah, just one big one? | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
Yeah. Sorry. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
But now, looking at it, I'm worried it's going to be a bit heavy. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
And also, I mean, if you had just one, | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
it's going to be double the width of that. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
-So you're going to have a massive, like huge... -Crazy. Yeah. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
It's not going to work with a big door, is it? | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
They're so much bigger than I anticipated. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
-Let's do a split. -OK. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
This means she's unable to give the homeowner | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
the French-style wardrobes she promised. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
Our next designer is 30-year-old photographer | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
and self-confessed perfectionist, Daniela. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
My style is, you know, modern, luxe. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
Laid-back, but, you know, kind of quite... | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
I would like to think quite chic. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
I like to add a bit of a twist, whether it be a little bit humorous, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
or make you think about something, or shock you. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
Yeah, it just gives you a certain feeling inside, and I like that. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
Daniela's brief is to remodel a young girl's bedroom | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
for our homeowners' 12-year-old daughter, Pippa. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
I don't want it to be too girlie. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
It should be timeless and modern | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
because I don't want to have to redo it again next year. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
Wow. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03 | |
Oh, it's much bigger than I thought. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
I definitely want it to be trendy and cool, | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
but I don't want it to be, like, over-the-top funky. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
I think she's got a really cute little style, anyway, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
so hopefully she'll like what I do. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
Pippa and mum Karina are keen to see what Daniela has in mind. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
So I went to start from the point of the building itself. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
So it's Regency Tropicana, basically. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
I noticed all the little cacti dotted around and things, | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
and your lovely little postcards, it all looked very tropical. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
So I was like, hmm, she clearly wants to be on holiday | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
a lot of the time! | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
So I thought I'd bring some Tropicana to you. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
So I looked at kind of cactuses and things like that, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
and then also Palm Springs, that led me to Palm Springs. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
Do you know whereabouts that is? | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
-Kind of. -Yes, in America, basically, and it's a beautiful place. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
You said that you liked blues and things like that, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
so basically, it's going to be a complete mix | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
of all the blues in the world. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
But then pops of nice little pinks and oranges and yellows, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
so very colourful. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
What a great presentation! | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
And I mean, it's so out there. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
And it's so LA and it's so Palm Springs. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
But she's 12 years old, the homeowner. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
Yeah. It's very, very sophisticated, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
and as a result, we got excited. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:23
but how is that going to translate into that room? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Being a mother myself, I know that when a child wants to change a room | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
from being a child to a teenager, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
you think how long is that going to last | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
before they want something else? | 0:09:34 | 0:09:35
I was so nervous, but, yeah, they really liked it. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
I'm pretty confident going into the first day. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
I mean, who knows? | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
But, yeah, I think I'm pretty sorted. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
Daniela's 48 hours have begun. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
So she gets to work creating her Tropicana Regency bedroom. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
And she's got a long list of jobs that need to be done. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
-What's the plan of action today? -Panelling everywhere. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
-Panelling, what, the whole room? -Yeah. Yeah. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
The cupboard is going to get taken right up to the ceiling. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
-Just... -Right. -And then, basically, the same here. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
And then radiator cover as well. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
Then I need just the MDF cut to size for the headboard. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
-Just a panel, or do you need...? -Just a panel, yeah. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
That should be, hopefully, quite simple. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
There's an awful lot of "quite simple" going on! | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
THEY LAUGH | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
Our final designer is 49-year-old hairdresser Oliver | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
who has a deep rooted dislike of all things minimal. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
When people ask me to describe my style, it is a mashup. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
Cos there's bits of everything that I like. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
So there's a little bit of grandeur, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:38
a little bit of sort of, you know, old world charm, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
a bit of retro. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:43
Oliver will have to muster all his creative charm | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
to make over this forgotten basement room for home owners Kim and Joe. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
Most of the house we've done up in very pale colours, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
and I think what we want for the guest bedroom | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
is perhaps a little bit more like the exterior, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
the countryside coming into the house. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
OK, the basement. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
I wouldn't want to find it was very chintzy or very florally. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:17
OK. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:18 | |
I think that would be quite disturbing, really. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
But will the homeowners be happy | 0:11:22 | 0:11:24
with Oliver's interpretation of their brief? | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
-Time for the big reveal. -OK. -Are you ready? -Yes. -OK. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
So we've come up with something like this. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
Wow! I like this panelling. That's a good idea. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:40
The reason I did this was because of the history of the building. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
OK. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:44 | |
I'll be honest, the one thing I'm not very keen on in houses | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
is plants indoors. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
OK. Are you happy with just one? | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
Would you be swayed with one? | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
I don't know. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
Can you explain the light fitting? | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
This is a light fitting I'm going to be making for you, | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
and it's actually made out of hula hoops. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
OK. Sounds good. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
You just have to bear with me on that one, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
but it's going to look really amazing, I promise! | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
-So you've put the bed between the windows? -Yes. Yes. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
Cos I think it frames it really well | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
cos this headboard is pretty spectacular | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
when it's going to be upholstered in this fabric. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
You need that kind of focal point, I think, you know, | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
to kind of draw your eye in. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
I guess that's a little bit of me in there, really. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
-OLIVER LAUGHS -A little bit of fancy. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
Only time will tell if the chintzy headboard | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
will be a step too far for our homeowners. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
I was really impressed by Oliver's confidence | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
in presenting that scheme, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:41
and also, the drawings helped him very well as well. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
But those fabrics, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
the way he glued them on the board were a little bit slapdash. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
I thought he was winging it a little bit. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
I love his style, | 0:12:50 | 0:12:51
I just cannot see how that fabric's going to work, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
and he's literally taken that thought of taking the garden inside | 0:12:55 | 0:13:01
by thinking that you'll have birds and all of that topiary | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
onto that fabric, and I personally don't like it. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
So that's my only concern with the design. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
Oliver's 48 hours have begun. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
But he's off to a slow start. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:18
I'm just actually waiting on paint. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
I...I didn't actually order the paint | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
until after the homeowners had actually seen it on the mood board. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
Now it's a little bit of a hold-up | 0:13:29 | 0:13:30
because I've now got to send somebody else off | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
to get the paint that they really like, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
here, so we can actually start putting it up on the walls. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
At home in North London, when it comes to paint colour, | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
Oliver has quite strong views. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
I was actually going to get some T-shirts made | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
and it was going to say, "Ban the beige". | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
Cos I just think people rely on neutrals too much. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
It's safe, it's easy. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
I can't stand minimalism. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
I'm what they call a maximalist. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:58
You know, it's like more is more, and it's better. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
HE LAUGHS | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
The doors have been papered with woodchip paper in the panels, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:12
which is an absolute nightmare to get off. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
Can I have a look? | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
It's really... It's been on there years. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
Unless you're a professional! | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
You just need a bit of muscle power. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
A bit of elbow grease seems to do the trick. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
Over at Katie's, she's concentrating on adding a focal point to the room. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
There's nothing more romantic than a fireplace in your bedroom. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:44
So I'm going to paint them up here, give them a couple of coats. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:48
I do think the key with Katie's scheme | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
is that she uses the right materials and the best materials. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
And that's where my concerns start to rise because she's painting gold | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
on some of the details, and that is just going to look so cheap. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
And it wouldn't have been that difficult | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
to use the real McCoy, such as Dutch Gold. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
I know, but look at the budget. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:06
At Daniela's, everyone is busy working through her list. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:12
At her home in Epping, she likes everything in its place. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
I kind of like to keep the walls plain and pure and white | 0:15:18 | 0:15:22
so then I can add accessories and take them away when I want. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
I try new ideas, yeah, try things out | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
and then they don't work, and then I try something new. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
So it's ever-evolving, which I love. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:32
So, first of all, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
-I did actually want to do the wallpaper on the ceiling. -OK. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
But despite being ultra-organised, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:43
Daniela's calculations may be slightly out. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
Can I ask you how many rolls you've got as well? | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
-I think we've got four rolls. -Four rolls? | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
I did it automated on the internet. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
-Right, OK, great! -Oh, no! -THEY LAUGH | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
She may have enough paper, but will the pattern match? | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
If you've measured for the whole ceiling, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
being, you know, that space, | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
and you've not accounted for the repeat as well, | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
it might be that we might be short. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
-Oh! -Yeah, yeah. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
At first glance, all these Regency terraces look all uniform. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:24
But a closer inspection reveals inconsistencies, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
a jagged roofline | 0:16:27 | 0:16:28
or one porch doesn't match the neighbouring porch. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
And that's because, even within one terrace, | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
different houses were built by different developers and builders | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
at different times. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:37
But certain elements were standard. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
The exterior walls tended to be plain. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
Regency houses were usually built out of brick, | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
but coated in stucco, a kind of plaster, | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
often incised with lines to give the impression that | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
the houses were built with more expensive stone. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
And echoing this architectural deception, | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
Katie intends to create a grand illusion of her own. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
These are the bedside lamps. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
My main concern was that they're very modern, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
and obviously, they're metal, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:12
and the room's supposed to be sort of French vintage. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
So I'm going to paint them, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
hopefully putting a sort of a verdigris patina on them. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:23
Katie mixes plaster of Paris, water and paint | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
to mimic the look of aged copper or bronze. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
-I've got one door. -Oh, fabulous! | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
Nearly at the end of day one. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
The ceiling's been painted, which was something. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
The coving's been painted as well. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
The doors are made for the wardrobe, they're just making sure they fit. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
A couple of my bigger jobs are getting done. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
So, yeah, I think we've done good, we've made good time. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
With most of the painting finished for Katie, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
over at Oliver's, he's still waiting for his paint. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
I think we've got about half an hour left now | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
until we've got to down tools. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
So if you just crack on with that. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
The things that I've progressed really well on are the wallpaper, | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
the panelling on the walls, and the headboard as well. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:11
So, good progress so far. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
Though with no sign of his paint, progress is slower for Oliver. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
I'm going to stay positive. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
You know, it can be done, it can be done tomorrow. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
Well, it will be done tomorrow. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
I'm not going to allow it to sort of, you know... | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
It's a hiccup, it's not a setback. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
With day one under their belts, | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
our three amateur designers take a moment to exchange notes. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
Did you get much done? | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
Not as much as I'd like to have done, to be honest. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
But I'm not going to freak out about it tonight. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
A few things have happened really fast | 0:18:44 | 0:18:45
that've made such a big difference for me. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
It's, like, just reassured me that little bit more, like, "Oh, yes." | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
I mean, it could all go wrong tomorrow, | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
I'm not saying it's going well, but, you know. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
-No... -Yeah! | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
It's the start of day two in Pittville, | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
and there's a long way to go | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
before two of our designers earn their place in the next round. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
And the pressure is on, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
as our judges will be paying them each a visit. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
Daniela's unsure whether she has enough wallpaper. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
-Morning, Stuart. -Morning. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
Katie can only hope that the homeowners... | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
Morning! | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
..will like her new-style wardrobe doors. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
And Oliver's still waiting for his paint to arrive. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
Day two, and I'm actually raring to go. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
I was beset with problems yesterday, | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
you know, there was unforeseen things that happened. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
I'm not going to harp on about it, you know, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
it's like kind of just move on from it now. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
You know, there's so much to do today. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
-Floor paint! -HE CHUCKLES | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
At last! | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
With the arrival of the paint, finally he has everything he needs. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
Over at Katie's, she's taking stock of the situation. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
What're we up to? | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
I'm just cutting these cupboard doors that you asked for. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
-Brilliant. -I should have them up in, I don't know, the next sort of hour. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
-Thank you. -No worries, you're welcome. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
Got a good plan in my mind for today. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
Got some key things I want to crack on with. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
Definitely getting the headboard done, | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
a massive job for me today is painting the bed. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
But the painter's really, really got ahead of himself | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
so that's looking really, really good, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
so, hopefully, we can start focusing on some detail later on in the day. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
But, first, Katie gets straight down to sanding the bed ready to paint. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
So, plan for today - architrave, finish that. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
Mm-hmm. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:36
Um... Fireplace. Then...wardrobes. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
-That's me for the day, I think, Wardrobes. -Yeah, definitely. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
-Morning, Jo. -Morning. -What's the situation with the paper? | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
-How short are we? Are we short? -Well, we are very tight. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
What we'll do is keep the... | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
Any splicing in of pieces, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
keep them to above the head as you walk in so they're out of sight. | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
-Hopefully, we'll be fine. -We will. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03
-Don't panic - we'll be fine. -Yeah, no, don't panic. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
At Oliver's, despite the homeowners' reservations, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
he's adding a touch of gold to his hula hoop lamp. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
So, this is just five, simple regular children's hula hoops | 0:21:17 | 0:21:22
which have all been drilled into the same place on each one. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
And then you thread your threaded bolt through. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
Five, I found, is the maximum you can have, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
unless you go much, much larger. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
I'm spraying it my favourite colour, which is gold. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
This doesn't actually fit in... | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
Purposely doesn't fit into the idea of nature, | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
and nature being in the brief. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
You know, it just throws something else in there | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
that isn't kind of part of the brief. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
You know, kind of makes things a little more exciting. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
And that's what you end up with five children's hula hoops | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
and some gold spray. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:05
This morning's gone really well. It's so much better than yesterday. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
I'm actually getting things done today, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
I feel like were moving forward. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
Over at Daniela's, things are organised, | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
and they're working through her list. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
But there's still a lot to do. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
I'm really nervous about seeing the judges today - | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
I'm not going to lie. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:27
I'm in love with this design, so if they don't like it, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
that's going to, like, break my heart a little bit. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
I've just taken the arm off of this sofa here, | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
and turned it into a chaise, basically. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
Actually, now I'm looking at it | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
turned up the other way with one arm off, | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
I actually really love the silhouette. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
With all her hopes pinned on the judges | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
liking her Tropicana Regency design, | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Dan and Kelly arrive to take their first look. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
-I love the wallpaper. -I'm really pleased with it so far. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
So, you've got plenty of wallpaper? | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
I wouldn't say plenty, but we've got enough. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
I mean, it'd be a drama if you missed a bit, you know. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
I know, imagine! I know, I know. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:07
The million-dollar question that I always ask - | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
what keeps you awake at night on this? | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
I think that I've been worrying about the wardrobes. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
I really want to get that done. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
It will get done, but, you know, I'm just cutting corners | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
with the standard, perhaps, which is a shame... | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
Don't tell us that! You've got a lot to do. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
You've put a lot on that board. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
And this entire project depends on | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
-absolutely everything you've got in it. -Yes. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
Daniela. She's got great style, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
and she seems to be on top of the project as well. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
I'm looking at it, thinking, "Where's it going to go wrong?" | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
Because she's confident, she's delegating, | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
she's got lists upon lists, she's ticking off, she's signing off. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
We couldn't fluster her at all, could we? | 0:23:44 | 0:23:46
You know, if there's anything missing, | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
-it's going to be massively disappointing. -Oh, I know. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
Dan really put the pressure on that, you know, the timings were short, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
and I've got a lot to do. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
But, then, Dan hasn't seen my list, | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
he doesn't know what I'm ticking off, | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
he doesn't know what I'm achieving, | 0:24:01 | 0:24:02
so, I think, you know, I'm not going to let it faze me. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
I think they were trying to scare me a little bit, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
but I'm not going to let them. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
Meanwhile, Katie's going for gold, | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
as she draws on the opulence of Versailles for her room. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
That's got potential, that gold, hasn't it? | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
Beautiful, isn't it? | 0:24:21 | 0:24:22
I was coming to ask, Katie, about the headboard. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
I've sketched something out on the MDF. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
-Do you want me to look? -Yeah. I'm not going to cut it until... | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
All right, yeah, I'm coming. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
Her build is organised. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
But, at home in Maldon, things tend to...evolve. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
I don't tend to do a lot of research because I like things to grow. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
But I'll always start with one piece | 0:24:45 | 0:24:46
that I know I definitely want in the room. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:48
So, like, my living room started from one picture that | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
my nan bought me as a moving-in present. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
It's Monarch Of The Glen, and that's how I came up with the wall colours. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:57
Because it's quite dark and moody, with the gold frame, | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
so that's why there's a lot of blue and gold in this room. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
Oh, wow! How long do you reckon we're looking? | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
We're coming up to lunchtime now, | 0:25:08 | 0:25:10
so I'm getting a little concerned about time. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
Yeah, I'll probably have this done in...don't know, 45 minutes? | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
-Ooh, I'm going to hold you to it! -OK. -OK. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
All the additional joinery is beginning to put pressure | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
on Katie's schedule. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
When it comes to headboards, for Oliver... | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
Very, very tricky for you, this. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
..things appear more relaxed. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
Look at that. See? | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
Thank you, and goodnight. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
Yeah, that's cosy. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:43
Over at Katie's, the judges are on their way | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
to see just how she's pulling | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
the Versailles Riviera and Provence brief together. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
Hi, Katie. My heart goes out to you. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
Your brief was really difficult for any designer - amateur or not. | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
My worry from the start was peach. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
-Why peach? -Why not peach? | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
It hasn't been around since the '70s, so let's bring it back. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
-There's a reason for that! -Well...! -Yeah. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
I wanted to paint the ceiling | 0:26:10 | 0:26:11
because a lot of the Regency homes would have had a painted ceiling. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
It's just...you know, the grey and the sort of verdigris green, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:20
all of that worked really well. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
I love the fact you've painted the bed in this beautiful grey. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
And I've walked in and seen the stripe on the wall, | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
and I am in a bit of a panic about that. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
Don't be panicked. It'll be fine. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
-Don't panic! Nobody panic! -DANIEL LAUGHS | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
-There's a fireplace going here. -OK. -So that's going to break it up. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
And I've got some artwork to go on there. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
'Katie is so charming.' | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
She's so bubbly, she's so happy, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
she's so confident with what she's doing. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:47
But she wants to please too much as well. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
The homeowner has asked for Provencale, Riviera, Versailles, | 0:26:49 | 0:26:55
but she's just got one room to deal with, and you do have to edit. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
I think she's going to create something fantastic | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
that the client wants, but is it going to look right, | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
and is it going to be too much? | 0:27:04 | 0:27:05
You know, the proof is going to be in the pudding when it's done. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
The judges seeing my room for the first time was... | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
..quite daunting. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
I know Kelly Hoppen said that peach should've maybe stayed in the '70s, | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
but I think that's what I wanted to do - | 0:27:19 | 0:27:21
find the most out-of-fashion colour | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
and try and use it in a modern home, in a modern room, | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
and then maybe we'll make it come around again. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:29
Back at Oliver's, the paint may have arrived, | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
but he needs to get it on and dry in time to avoid any more delay. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:39
So, we're going to get down the first coat of the floor paint. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
This is just... We will need two coats. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
But it's just the first one, almost like a prime. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
And Oliver's wasting no time getting the paint job done. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
OK. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:02 | |
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS | 0:28:05 | 0:28:06
Photographer Daniela wants to make a portrait of Pippa for her bedroom. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
Gorgeous! | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
Upstairs, the final piece of wallpaper slots into place. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:18
Wow, finally. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:23
-It's done! -Tell me about it. | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
-Are you relieved? -Yeah, I am relieved. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
It looks...fabulous. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
In Regency homes, | 0:28:34 | 0:28:35
drawing rooms for entertaining were generally on the first floor. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:39
Gigantic windows not only flooded the rooms with light | 0:28:39 | 0:28:43
but also gave a chance to show off your fashionable interior decoration | 0:28:43 | 0:28:46
for the world outside. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:47
They also gave great views of the parks and gardens. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
Letting the outside inside seems like a very contemporary concern, | 0:28:50 | 0:28:54
but the Regency home did it first. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:56
And someone bringing the outside in now to transform his dreary basement | 0:29:00 | 0:29:05
is Oliver. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:06
Painting is relaxing, you know? | 0:29:08 | 0:29:10
It helps you zone out a little bit, I think. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
-It does me, anyway. -HE LAUGHS | 0:29:13 | 0:29:15
-Hi, Oliver. -Hello. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:20
You seem really laid-back, | 0:29:20 | 0:29:21
and there doesn't seem to be a huge amount that's being done down there, | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
and the clock is ticking. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:26
And there's a floor that's being painted. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:28
-Is that holding you back? -That's just dry, that's just dry now. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:31
So you're watching paint dry, literally? | 0:29:31 | 0:29:33
No, I haven't got time to watch paint dry! | 0:29:33 | 0:29:35
That's had its first coat. | 0:29:35 | 0:29:36
At end of day, it'll have its second coat, | 0:29:36 | 0:29:38
which should just level it all out completely. | 0:29:38 | 0:29:40
Does that mean you've got a plan? | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
Does it mean you've got a tick-off list | 0:29:42 | 0:29:43
of the things you need to get done and achieve? | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
It's a bit more of an organic plan than that. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:47
-That's what I thought. -I don't do things to order. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:50
Like at 9am, I've got to do this, at 10am, it's got to be finished. | 0:29:50 | 0:29:54
-You know, I think that's... -BIG mistake. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:56
-Really? -Yeah. -OK... | 0:29:56 | 0:29:58
I quite like the idea of it, but I'll tell you what, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
by that time tomorrow, if it's not finished, you're in trouble. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:04
I know! It's curtains! | 0:30:04 | 0:30:05
-Do it anyway you want, but it has to be done. -It has to be done. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:08
I do think that Oliver has got a difficult task ahead. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:12
I think that his imagination is good. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
I guess my worry is, | 0:30:15 | 0:30:17
having now met him and seen the progress of the project, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
is that the way his mind works in terms of design? | 0:30:20 | 0:30:22
He has a great idea, and then it's just very... | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
"I'll do this now, I'll do it later." | 0:30:25 | 0:30:27
Well, he has been nonchalant, the way that he's running this project. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:31
But that sort of nonchalance could give us that je ne sais quoi | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
-that you need in great interior design. -That sort of freedom? -Yeah. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:38
I'm just going to keep coasting along. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:39
It's working fine so far, so... | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42
Yeah. I'm not going to start getting rattled. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:46
As the rooms are all slightly different, | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50
the judges are keen for the designers to demonstrate | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
their creativity on a level playing field. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:55
So the competitors are about to be given an identical surprise item | 0:30:57 | 0:31:02
to artistically incorporate into their scheme. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
-Katie. -Hello. -I've got a little surprise for you. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:09
This is your creative challenge. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:12
-Hmm... -That is quite a lot to deal with. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
-And that's anything, anything you can do? -Creative challenge. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
And, also, just to make it more spicy, you've got three hours. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:21
Three hours? Wow, OK. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
-And do everything else that you're doing. -Of course, fine. Easy. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
Don't get hung up on it, though! | 0:31:27 | 0:31:28
Wow. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34 | |
Nice surprise. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:41
I mean...I don't know whether to laugh or cry with these. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
But, unperturbed, Katie gets straight down to business. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:49
For the challenge, | 0:31:49 | 0:31:51
I asked Johnny to try and square them off a little bit, | 0:31:51 | 0:31:56
so we can try and make them into a big frame, | 0:31:56 | 0:31:58
because we're using this sort of shape in the room | 0:31:58 | 0:32:01
for the back of the bed and on the wardrobe, | 0:32:01 | 0:32:03
so I'm going to try to mirror it in a frame for some artwork. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
Look at those! | 0:32:06 | 0:32:08
It a bit '70s, but it's going to go with the peach ceiling. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
Frame constructed, Katie draws it into the room scheme | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
with her rich use of colour. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:20
Katie's challenge complete, | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
things are taking a little longer with Daniela. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
So I'm thinking that I want to do, like, a little kind of... | 0:32:33 | 0:32:37
Not Moroccan style, because it wouldn't go with my room, | 0:32:37 | 0:32:39
but a kind of low table that you can just sling a book on | 0:32:39 | 0:32:43
or I could put a cushion on, | 0:32:43 | 0:32:44
So something like that. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:46
And then these either in the same direction or crossing over. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:52
-I see, OK. -So layering them up. | 0:32:52 | 0:32:56
-Yeah, all right. -Cool. | 0:32:56 | 0:32:57
I'm just going to mask off a little geometric design on top of here. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:05
And completely unfazed by the three-hour deadline, | 0:33:12 | 0:33:16
Oliver's still mulling over his design. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:18
I'm just thinking.... I'm just thinking, kind of... | 0:33:18 | 0:33:22
working out shapes and ideas and stuff. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:24
I could cut them in half. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:26
OK, so that doesn't really work... | 0:33:26 | 0:33:28
With a little encouragement... | 0:33:35 | 0:33:37
It's quite a nice motif. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:38
..Oliver's masterpiece evolves. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:41
Yeah, it is. It's going to make a really nice flower. | 0:33:41 | 0:33:44
-HE LAUGHS -She wants to bring the outside in! | 0:33:44 | 0:33:47
-That's rather good, isn't it? -It's not bad, is it, considering? | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
It really is. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:00
Three hours are up, and it's creative challenge time. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:02
-I'm dying to see what you've done. -It's behind you. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
-It's behind us? -Oh, my word! | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
-That's clever. -That's very clever! | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
-Here it is. -Oh, my God! | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
I looked down there, and I saw a table. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
I thought, "Where did she get that from?" | 0:34:13 | 0:34:15
Hi, Oliver. Wow, look at that! | 0:34:15 | 0:34:17
Well, there's no need to ask you | 0:34:17 | 0:34:19
if we can have a look at your creative challenge. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
Very beautiful, actually, isn't it? | 0:34:21 | 0:34:24
And, at the end of the challenge, Katie's created a picture frame, | 0:34:24 | 0:34:27
Daniela, a table, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:29
and Oliver, some artwork. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
I feel so energised by those creative challenges. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:35
I'm so surprised. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:36
But it's just been amazing! | 0:34:36 | 0:34:39
It goes to show it is possible to be creative with something | 0:34:39 | 0:34:42
which is pretty humdrum in this world. | 0:34:42 | 0:34:44
-A coat hanger. -I know. -And can we pick a winner? | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
I'm afraid I can't. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
-I think they're all good. -I think they all have come up trumps today. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:52
With the challenges completed, | 0:34:56 | 0:34:57
our designers turn their attentions back to the job in hand. | 0:34:57 | 0:35:01
-So, tomorrow, the fireplace, the hearth... -Yeah? | 0:35:01 | 0:35:07
-..the shelf... -Yeah. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:09
And then we've got to construct the canopy that goes over the bed. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:12
So this is basically two minutes away from being done, | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
which I'm so relieved about. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
Tonight, I've just got little jobs to do. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:22
Right, here you go. | 0:35:22 | 0:35:24
Lovely. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:28
I'm going to leave that with you | 0:35:28 | 0:35:30
cos I've got lots to get on with back at the hotel. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:32
Today has gone really, really well. It's gone brilliantly, | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
but there's still things I need to do back at the hotel. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:41
I've got some cushions to finish, I've got some curtains to make, | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
so it's going to be a big sewing night for me this evening. | 0:35:45 | 0:35:49
With all three designers up against it, | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
this could be the beginning of a long night. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:53
It's the start of day three, and there's just a few hours left | 0:36:04 | 0:36:07
for our designers to pull together their schemes. | 0:36:07 | 0:36:09
They'll soon find out whether all their hard work has been enough | 0:36:09 | 0:36:13
for them to progress to the next round. | 0:36:13 | 0:36:16
Or whether they'll be the one going home. | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
I've been up since three o'clock this morning, actually, | 0:36:19 | 0:36:22
and I feel, actually, so full of energy. It's madness. It's, like, | 0:36:22 | 0:36:26
'there's so much to do. It's all to play for. | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
'I've just got to keep going.' | 0:36:29 | 0:36:30
OK, day three, let's get started. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:32
-Morning! -Morning. -You all right? | 0:36:32 | 0:36:35
It's all a blur. I was up so late doing stuff. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
But I got everything done, so I'm super-pleased. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
I'm definitely feeling the pressure today. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:43
-Hi, guys. -All right? -Last day! | 0:36:43 | 0:36:45
But I think we're going to get it done. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:47
You know, I'm not going to not let it get done. | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
But, yeah, obviously, there's a lot of pressure. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
At Oliver's, he's taking a bit of a gamble | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
as he experiments with his decorative lead strips. | 0:36:57 | 0:37:01
They've each got to be cut out individually. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:04
I've marked out, very loosely, a pattern to follow. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:08
I've never done it before, | 0:37:08 | 0:37:10
and, first time, it's not bad. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
But they're still playing catch-up with the paint. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:17
Progress so far, so the room's had to have its second coat of paint. | 0:37:17 | 0:37:21
It's kind of holding things up a little bit. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
They're working as fast as they can | 0:37:23 | 0:37:25
but I would prefer if they would just work a little bit faster. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:28
So, what do the judges think of his scheme? | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
How about Oliver's brief? | 0:37:32 | 0:37:34
I mean, the whole idea was that he's bringing the outside in. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:38
Cos it's actually quite a dull, dark room, that, | 0:37:38 | 0:37:40
and it just needs to feel more like a garden room. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:42
He's picked out this rather floral, not Kelly Hoppen-liked chintz. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:46
I think he's designed something that is very... | 0:37:46 | 0:37:50
It's good. It's very eclectic. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:52
He's taken on board putting panelling up halfway, | 0:37:52 | 0:37:55
he's done good colours. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:56
What you've got is a nice, neutral background | 0:37:56 | 0:37:59
with some panelling which feels OK, and then there's that chintz. | 0:37:59 | 0:38:02
And with more than just a hint of chintz, | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
Katie's rushing ahead with her grandiose Versailles scheme. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:09
And things are getting a little topsy-turvy. | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
-I'd go, like, something like that. -Lower, lower, lower. Lower! | 0:38:12 | 0:38:17
Is that not upside down? | 0:38:17 | 0:38:18
That's the right way, isn't it, surely? | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
Yeah, I think you're right, actually. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
So, yeah, I think we should do them the other way - | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
-that looks much better. -SHE LAUGHS | 0:38:26 | 0:38:29
The really tough brief was the one for Katie, | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
because it asked for Riviera, some Provencale, Versailles. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:40
And what she's actually created is everything. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
She's got this peach idea in her head, hasn't she? | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
She thinks she's going to carry the banner | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
for reintroducing peach into our world. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
-Good luck with that. -Mm. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:52
At Daniela's, her lists are getting longer. | 0:38:53 | 0:38:55
You don't have to agree to any of it. | 0:38:57 | 0:38:58
This is just what I would love done. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
THEY LAUGH | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
Look at the size of the list! | 0:39:02 | 0:39:04
That's not just for him - that's for us as well. | 0:39:04 | 0:39:06
Us?! | 0:39:06 | 0:39:08 | |
And, top of her list is a new desk for Pippa. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
We haven't got the hinges that we need | 0:39:11 | 0:39:13
to do the fold-down legs, right? | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
-Is that right, Stuart? -Yeah. -Just use the things that you've got, | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
and as long as it folds down and it connects, then I'm happy. | 0:39:19 | 0:39:23
-Hold it there. -Yeah. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
-Hmm... -All right? | 0:39:28 | 0:39:29
Hang on, let me get a better positioning. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
Let me try a different way of holding it. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:34
-Like this. -I'm just going to mark it up. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:36
With the desk a key part of the scheme, | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
the pressure's on to get the joinery right. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:41
-All right. -All right. -Let go. I've got it. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
You've got it? OK. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:46
So, how's Daniela getting on? Are those lists helping her? | 0:39:46 | 0:39:49
Daniela's Little Miss Organised, | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51
and I think she's brilliant at what she's doing, | 0:39:51 | 0:39:53
but she is frantically painting cupboards this morning, | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
and very little time to go, so I'm just praying that she gets it done. | 0:39:56 | 0:40:01
The thing is is we're very excited about what she's doing, | 0:40:01 | 0:40:03
so anything that is missing from her project | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
is going to be a big disappointment. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:08
Despite her long to-do list, | 0:40:11 | 0:40:14
Daniela's in the final flurries of finessing... | 0:40:14 | 0:40:16
Erm... | 0:40:16 | 0:40:17
Her Tropicana Regency-themed room for Pippa. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:21
Argh! | 0:40:24 | 0:40:25 | |
Go, just go! Yeah! | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
Yeah, there, perfect, perfect! Quick, quick, quick! | 0:40:32 | 0:40:34
OK. OK, OK, OK, OK. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:43
And Daniela's 48 hours are up. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:46
Finished. | 0:40:46 | 0:40:48
I'm just so satisfied, really. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
You know, there could always be a little bit more | 0:40:51 | 0:40:53
but that's cos I'm a perfectionist, | 0:40:53 | 0:40:55
and I would've just liked that little bit more. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
But it's my first time at doing this, | 0:40:58 | 0:41:00
and, yeah, I'm proud of myself. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:03
But has Daniela succeeded in adding that Californian vibe into the room? | 0:41:03 | 0:41:07
Before, this was a typical girl's bedroom, | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
with safe, muted tones and florals. | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
Now it's a stylish space. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:17
With more of a teenage attitude. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:20
Personalised with Pippa's portrait. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
And a cool chaise for hanging out | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
under the splattered-paint effect ceiling and Sputnik light. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:32
The updated cupboard is now a practical work station, | 0:41:32 | 0:41:35
with drop-down desk. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
-Oh, goodness. -Oh, my word. | 0:41:44 | 0:41:46
Her styling ability is extraordinary! | 0:41:46 | 0:41:49
I mean, this kind of LA-Palm Springs kind of look | 0:41:49 | 0:41:53
that is just so perfect. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:55
So, she's great with detail, | 0:41:55 | 0:41:57
but I think she's great with detail which is to do with fabric. | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
Because I'm looking at these doors, | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
and I have to say they're just a little bit shoddy on the edges. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:06
They could've done with a bit more sanding and just a bit more care. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
Behind here is meant to be a little sewing cupboard. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
That's right, I'd forgotten about that. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
Well, it's there. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
She's got this little flap that you open up for... | 0:42:16 | 0:42:19
-DESK CLATTERS -Ooh... | 0:42:19 | 0:42:22
That's a bit difficult. | 0:42:22 | 0:42:24
There should be supporting leg for the desk. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:26
It really looks like they rushed out the door. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
They've even left their coffee cup underneath there. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:31
-It's feeling a little bit unloved. -She's run out of time. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:33
-Yeah. -And that's the problem. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:35
The homeowner's opinion will also be taken into consideration | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
when the judges make their final decision. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:41
But will the Tropicana Regency-style design | 0:42:41 | 0:42:44
be too grown-up for a 12-year-old? | 0:42:44 | 0:42:45
Right, come on. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:47
Wow, that's amazing, Pippa! | 0:42:50 | 0:42:52
Make yourself at home. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:53
-I love it! -I love those cupboards. -The same. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:57
That's a mum thing to say - practicality and storage. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
I know, I'm sorry. I love the photograph. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
Have you seen the photograph of you? | 0:43:03 | 0:43:04
PIPPA LAUGHS It's a beautiful photograph! | 0:43:04 | 0:43:07
-It's lovely. -Have you looked up there? | 0:43:07 | 0:43:10
Oh, yeah! Oh, I really like it. | 0:43:10 | 0:43:13
-You weren't quite sure to begin with. -No. | 0:43:13 | 0:43:15
I think it works with everything else, though, now. | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18
-Yeah, I like it. -So, we've got practicality. | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
-Yeah. -We've got colour, we've got design. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:24
Do you think this is a room that you can grow into? | 0:43:24 | 0:43:27
Yeah, definitely. | 0:43:27 | 0:43:29
With the end of the challenge in sight, | 0:43:32 | 0:43:34
Katie's determined to squeeze in every aspect of her design... | 0:43:34 | 0:43:38
And then maybe just go slightly higher. | 0:43:38 | 0:43:40
Don't line it up with a radiator, just in a little bit. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
Yeah, lovely. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:44
..in the hope that she'll win over the homeowners and the judges, | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
despite altering the wardrobe door design | 0:43:47 | 0:43:50
and using the peach paint on the ceiling they were so unsure of. | 0:43:50 | 0:43:53
And maximising every single second, Katie has hit her 48-hour deadline. | 0:43:55 | 0:44:00
Success. Feeling really happy. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
Let's see what the judges think. | 0:44:08 | 0:44:09
I know that I've worked the hardest that I can, | 0:44:13 | 0:44:15
and I hope I've delivered absolutely everything that I wanted to. | 0:44:15 | 0:44:19
But has Katie created that cornucopia of all things French | 0:44:19 | 0:44:23
that her homeowner asked for? | 0:44:23 | 0:44:24
48 hours ago, the room was bland, uninspiring, | 0:44:26 | 0:44:30
and monopolised by magnolia. | 0:44:30 | 0:44:32
Now it's a room that really makes a statement. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:36
The rickety wardrobes now ooze French charm. | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
The bed has been restyled with a dramatic new headboard. | 0:44:44 | 0:44:48
And the fireplace is now a bold focal point. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
All finished off with gold and lace detailing. | 0:44:52 | 0:44:55
Wow. There's just so much to take in. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:04
I do love the colour and the wardrobes. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:08
I love the little detail in the corner. | 0:45:08 | 0:45:10
I like the way they're shaped. I think that's really nice. | 0:45:10 | 0:45:13
That whole elevation works really well, doesn't it? | 0:45:13 | 0:45:15
Bar the picture frame in the middle with the bits of lace - | 0:45:15 | 0:45:19
that makes my toes curl. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:20
But I actually rather like the stripes with the gold. | 0:45:20 | 0:45:23
-It looks really effective. -That whole wall really is effective. | 0:45:23 | 0:45:26
She's a really good stylist, actually. | 0:45:26 | 0:45:28
I like how she's put it all together. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:30
But, you see, she's tried to bring the peach in... | 0:45:30 | 0:45:33
Yeah. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:35 | |
-It matches perfectly. -Yeah. | 0:45:35 | 0:45:37
And, you know what, the peach goes really well with the grey. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:40
It does. | 0:45:40 | 0:45:41
It's just this and this and this, for me, just completely throws it. | 0:45:41 | 0:45:45
I think we're both in agreement. | 0:45:45 | 0:45:47
A bedroom should have a serene, calming feel about it, | 0:45:47 | 0:45:51
and, yet, she's in fact clashing colours. | 0:45:51 | 0:45:53
But I think she's put it together very well. | 0:45:53 | 0:45:56
She's worked this brief, and it was a complicated brief, | 0:45:56 | 0:45:59
when you have Versailles, the Riviera, Provencale | 0:45:59 | 0:46:02
all thrown in one, | 0:46:02 | 0:46:04
that is not easy, and she's actually pulled it off. | 0:46:04 | 0:46:07
But has Katie managed to fulfil Jane, the homeowner's, brief? | 0:46:09 | 0:46:12
-Wow. -So, what do you think? | 0:46:17 | 0:46:19
-It's busy. -Is it too busy? | 0:46:19 | 0:46:21
If I had been doing it by myself, I'd have made it less busy. | 0:46:22 | 0:46:25
But, actually, I quite like it. | 0:46:25 | 0:46:27
Not sure about the picture up there. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:29
About the nature of the picture, or the picture being there? | 0:46:30 | 0:46:33
Oh, no, just the nature of the picture. | 0:46:33 | 0:46:35
-And then there's the peach. -Then there's the peach. | 0:46:35 | 0:46:38
I quite like it. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:39
I do quite like it. I would never have put in my room myself. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:43
There's just something appealing about it. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:45
How about that kind of French feel you wanted? | 0:46:45 | 0:46:47
-That Versailles, Provence feel? -I think it's got a French feel. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:50
It's definitely got a French feel to it. Yes. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:53
In the basement of his home, | 0:46:53 | 0:46:55
Oliver's design is coming together | 0:46:55 | 0:46:57
to create his brief for bringing the outside in... | 0:46:57 | 0:47:00
..with added chintz. | 0:47:01 | 0:47:02
Little bit that way. Just a small amount. | 0:47:05 | 0:47:08
-That's it, yeah. Perfect. -Yeah? -Absolutely spot on. | 0:47:08 | 0:47:11
Happy with the bed, he turns his attention to the walls. | 0:47:11 | 0:47:13
Just...cutting out some photocopies of lithographs, | 0:47:13 | 0:47:18
just to fill up the frames. | 0:47:18 | 0:47:20
One. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:25 | |
And ignores the homeowner's reluctance to have plants indoors. | 0:47:27 | 0:47:30
It's a pot plant. Just a little bit of life. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:34
And Oliver's 48 hours are up. | 0:47:34 | 0:47:37
Not bad. | 0:47:39 | 0:47:41
Most of all, I feel relieved, I feel relieved that it's done. | 0:47:49 | 0:47:53
It was really, really pressurised. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:55
Erm... Yeah. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
I didn't realise quite how pressurised it would be. | 0:47:57 | 0:48:00
It's not an easy walk in the park, that's for sure. | 0:48:00 | 0:48:04
Oliver's chintz and pot plant | 0:48:04 | 0:48:06
may have deviated from the homeowner's wishes, | 0:48:06 | 0:48:08
but has he satisfied the brief of bringing the outside in? | 0:48:08 | 0:48:12
48 hours ago, this was a dark basement room, | 0:48:13 | 0:48:16
home to nothing but forgotten furniture. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:19
Now it's a light and airy panelled guest bedroom. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
Oliver's hanger artwork has pride of place on the wall. | 0:48:29 | 0:48:33
The handmade headboard draws the eye to the outside. | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
And his hula-hooper light hangs majestically above the bed. | 0:48:39 | 0:48:43
While the addition of lead to the mirrored cupboard | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
adds a botanical feel. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:49
Wow. | 0:48:53 | 0:48:55 | |
This is a bit of a transformation, isn't it, | 0:48:55 | 0:48:57
from when we first saw this room? | 0:48:57 | 0:48:59
He's even managed to make some of the fabrics, | 0:48:59 | 0:49:02
which neither of us were very happy about - | 0:49:02 | 0:49:04
you certainly with that chintz, | 0:49:04 | 0:49:05
me with those sort of brightly coloured velvets - | 0:49:05 | 0:49:08
and he's made them look good. | 0:49:08 | 0:49:10
I have to say I still hate the headboard. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:13
Although the chintz is quite softening, | 0:49:13 | 0:49:16
and part of the brief was to bring the garden into the room. | 0:49:16 | 0:49:21
-And so it does reflect that... -..but they didn't want chintz. | 0:49:21 | 0:49:25
But this sofa is glorious. | 0:49:25 | 0:49:26
That is just the perfect way to put cushions onto a sofa. | 0:49:26 | 0:49:30
I know, and we didn't really like that when we saw it on the board, | 0:49:30 | 0:49:33
but now it looks fantastic, | 0:49:33 | 0:49:34
and it looks great against that beautiful grey panelling there. | 0:49:34 | 0:49:38
And the reason it works, for me, is this room, being a basement room, | 0:49:38 | 0:49:42
felt fairly cold, | 0:49:42 | 0:49:43
and, yet, just putting another layer on it has warmed it all up. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:47
Although I'm not happy with the way that Oliver has hung those pictures | 0:49:47 | 0:49:51
because there's not enough tensions | 0:49:51 | 0:49:53
-between them and the back of the sofa. -Yeah. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:55
For me, it should either be on the panelling or above | 0:49:55 | 0:49:58
-and sort of closer together. -Yeah. Not halfway. -Yeah. | 0:49:58 | 0:50:01
But will the homeowners fall for Oliver's little bit of chintz? | 0:50:06 | 0:50:09
Ooh. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:14 | |
Wow. Wow! | 0:50:15 | 0:50:17
And I don't see a household plant... | 0:50:17 | 0:50:20
Oh, I do, yes! | 0:50:20 | 0:50:22
-Put right in front of your nose! -It survived. | 0:50:22 | 0:50:25
Has he brought the outside in? | 0:50:25 | 0:50:26
I think he's framed the windows really nicely | 0:50:28 | 0:50:30
-so you get a sense of that view. -Yes. | 0:50:30 | 0:50:32
And what do you think of the mirrors? | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
I'm not sure about the leading. | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
I think I visualised it as a bit more like a garden gate. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:40
Do you think it all melds together well? | 0:50:40 | 0:50:42
I think it probably is a little bit chintzy for my taste, I guess. | 0:50:42 | 0:50:47
I'm getting the sense it's kind of 50-50, you like some bits, | 0:50:47 | 0:50:50
50-50, you don't like the other bits. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:52
Yeah, perhaps. | 0:50:52 | 0:50:54
Yeah. | 0:50:56 | 0:50:57 | |
With the judging over, | 0:50:59 | 0:51:00
it's an anxious wait for our three amateur designers. | 0:51:00 | 0:51:03
For the greater good, | 0:51:05 | 0:51:06
I'm obviously more interested in what the homeowners think, | 0:51:06 | 0:51:10
and how they feel about their room. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:12
But for purely selfish reasons... | 0:51:12 | 0:51:15
Of course I care what Dan and Kelly say. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:19
That goes without saying. | 0:51:19 | 0:51:21
I've enjoyed this process so much. I would do it again in a heartbeat. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:28
There's nothing really I would change, either. | 0:51:28 | 0:51:30
I would definitely love to go through. | 0:51:30 | 0:51:32
I've slaved over this. I've put my heart and soul into it. | 0:51:37 | 0:51:40
And, you know, I've put so much passion into it, | 0:51:40 | 0:51:43
so, yeah, hopefully it'll be enough. | 0:51:43 | 0:51:46
So, was Daniela organised to the very end? | 0:51:49 | 0:51:51
Not the very end. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:53
She was organised, but there were a few little bits missing, | 0:51:53 | 0:51:57
which was slightly disappointing. | 0:51:57 | 0:51:58
I mean, she had an incredible eye for design. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:01
I think she captured a wonderful room | 0:52:01 | 0:52:04
for a 12-year-old going on five years. | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07
But where she really let herself down was on the build. | 0:52:07 | 0:52:11
Both the homeowners, mother and daughter, well, they both loved it. | 0:52:11 | 0:52:15
Mother loved the practicality. | 0:52:15 | 0:52:16
The 12-year-old...well, she just loved every bit of it. | 0:52:16 | 0:52:19
Including the spotted ceiling. | 0:52:19 | 0:52:21
She wasn't quite so sure about the spotted ceiling to begin with, | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23
but, yeah, she loved it. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25
Now, Katie had quite a tough brief. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:27
Well, the problem with Katie is | 0:52:27 | 0:52:29
that she took the brief too literally, I think, | 0:52:29 | 0:52:32
and she didn't quite know how to edit it. | 0:52:32 | 0:52:34
And I think that was her biggest mistake, | 0:52:34 | 0:52:36
because if she'd done that, | 0:52:36 | 0:52:37
it would've been a more pared-down feeling and look to the room. | 0:52:37 | 0:52:41
-There was a lot going on in there, wasn't there? -A huge amount. | 0:52:41 | 0:52:44
I think there WAS a lot going on, | 0:52:44 | 0:52:45
but what she did do was styled beautifully. | 0:52:45 | 0:52:49
What did the client think? | 0:52:49 | 0:52:51
Well...she liked it overall, | 0:52:51 | 0:52:53
but I got the sense that perhaps she was being a bit polite. | 0:52:53 | 0:52:56
Oliver had a difficult brief with a basement bedroom, | 0:52:56 | 0:53:00
and, yet, he was asked to bring the outside in as well. | 0:53:00 | 0:53:03
I mean, that's a tough room to design | 0:53:03 | 0:53:05
because it's dark, it's underground, | 0:53:05 | 0:53:08
and I think the thing is the room turned out really well. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:11
I loved the panelling that was high up, with the lovely grey. | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
The way in which he had done the lead on the mirrored cupboards, | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
I thought that was really, really good. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
The problem I had was the chintz on the headboard | 0:53:19 | 0:53:23
because I think that was his interpretation | 0:53:23 | 0:53:25
of bringing the garden inside, | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
and one of the things they had requested, of dislikes, was chintz. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:31
What did they think? | 0:53:31 | 0:53:32
-I would say they were kind of 50-50. -Oh, really? | 0:53:32 | 0:53:35
Loved it and disliked it. | 0:53:35 | 0:53:37
So, three very creative people who have put their all into these rooms. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:42
-Which one's going to go? -Ooh. | 0:53:42 | 0:53:43
Now, Regency architecture, particularly in a spa town, | 0:53:47 | 0:53:50
is all about harmony and proportion | 0:53:50 | 0:53:52
but with an added dash of fashion and frivolity. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:55
I think that attitude ran through all three of your rooms. | 0:53:55 | 0:53:58
Daniela, your presentation was phenomenal. I loved it. | 0:53:59 | 0:54:05
Where you let yourself down, and the client down, | 0:54:05 | 0:54:07
was in your production of joinery, | 0:54:07 | 0:54:09
and that's something that you're going to have to learn | 0:54:09 | 0:54:11
in the future. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:13
Katie, I loved your passion and your energy. | 0:54:15 | 0:54:19
It was boundless! | 0:54:19 | 0:54:20
But, actually, you have a great desire to please, too, | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
so you wanted to get everything done in that brief in that room. | 0:54:23 | 0:54:27
And in a room that small, in a room that should be quite serene, | 0:54:27 | 0:54:31
it was maybe just a little bit too much. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:34
Oliver, your ability to design with an eclectic style is really good, | 0:54:35 | 0:54:40
but the one thing that lets you down | 0:54:40 | 0:54:42
is asking the question with your client | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
and understanding what it is that they actually want. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:49
And that's something that you can learn from this. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:51
There's only room for two in the next round, I'm afraid. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:55
So we have to say goodbye to one of the three. | 0:54:58 | 0:55:01
The first designer going through is... | 0:55:01 | 0:55:04
..Daniela. | 0:55:07 | 0:55:09
Goodness. Thank you. | 0:55:09 | 0:55:11
The second designer going through to the next round is... | 0:55:11 | 0:55:16
-..Oliver. -Oh, my God! | 0:55:19 | 0:55:22
So, Katie, I'm afraid it's goodbye. | 0:55:22 | 0:55:25
That's all right, that's all right. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:27
I think the standard of competition was really high, | 0:55:29 | 0:55:32
and I think that each and every one of them had brilliant qualities. | 0:55:32 | 0:55:37
I'm so happy, so relieved as well. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:42
-I got in. -Yay! Well done. | 0:55:42 | 0:55:45
-That's fantastic! -Thank you. | 0:55:45 | 0:55:47
Daniela had to go through because she's such a great stylist, | 0:55:47 | 0:55:50
and the room looked fabulous as a result. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:53
My concern, though, is that she thought joinery | 0:55:53 | 0:55:56
was just one more thing to tick off her list, | 0:55:56 | 0:55:58
and she didn't realise that it needs | 0:55:58 | 0:55:59
a lot more work and thought than that. | 0:55:59 | 0:56:01
You did a great job, Katie, honestly. | 0:56:01 | 0:56:04
Don't give up. Don't give up. | 0:56:04 | 0:56:06
I'm completely devastated. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
You did a fantastic job. You really did. | 0:56:08 | 0:56:10
I'm hoping that the fact that I'm really upset shows... | 0:56:10 | 0:56:14
that it's a big thing for me and it's definitely... | 0:56:14 | 0:56:17
it's definitely something I want to carry on doing | 0:56:17 | 0:56:19
and I'm going to carry on doing. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:20
And, yeah, I do see this as totally the beginning for me. | 0:56:20 | 0:56:24
You all right? Do you like it? | 0:56:24 | 0:56:26
-We do like it. -You do, yes? -Love it, love it. | 0:56:26 | 0:56:29
Yeah? | 0:56:29 | 0:56:30 | |
Sadly, Katie is leaving the competition today | 0:56:30 | 0:56:32
because one person has to go, | 0:56:32 | 0:56:34
but mainly because her edit was just not good enough. | 0:56:34 | 0:56:37
She took everything on board that the client wanted, | 0:56:37 | 0:56:41
but she didn't know how to pare it down. | 0:56:41 | 0:56:43
I'm absolutely flabbergasted. | 0:56:44 | 0:56:45
I just can't believe! | 0:56:45 | 0:56:47
I was convinced, I was so convinced | 0:56:47 | 0:56:49
they were going to say Katie's name instead of mine. | 0:56:49 | 0:56:52
I was convinced I was going home. | 0:56:52 | 0:56:53
Well done. | 0:56:53 | 0:56:56
-We're so pleased you got through. -Congratulations. | 0:56:56 | 0:56:59
'Oliver is so laid back.' | 0:56:59 | 0:57:01
And quite rightly so because he's a very relaxed designer. | 0:57:01 | 0:57:04
And it's very clear that he's creative, | 0:57:04 | 0:57:06
and he's creative on his feet. | 0:57:06 | 0:57:08
As a result, we saw a beautifully balanced room. | 0:57:08 | 0:57:12
When the bed's there inviting you into it... | 0:57:12 | 0:57:15
Exactly. It's got a lovely vibe. | 0:57:15 | 0:57:17
My concern with Oliver is I really don't think | 0:57:17 | 0:57:20
he was questioning the homeowner enough. | 0:57:20 | 0:57:23
I think, going forward, | 0:57:23 | 0:57:24
he's just got to be a little bit more curious and say, | 0:57:24 | 0:57:27
"So what is it you're really wanting? | 0:57:27 | 0:57:28
"What is it that you're meaning with that brief?" | 0:57:28 | 0:57:31
What I'd like to do, maybe, | 0:57:31 | 0:57:33
is take a little bit more of a risk for the second one. | 0:57:33 | 0:57:35
I think I need to put a little bit of Oliver into what I've done. | 0:57:35 | 0:57:39
I'm really going to up the ante now. | 0:57:40 | 0:57:42
Think about how I can really surprise the judges next time. | 0:57:44 | 0:57:47
Joseph Pitt's vision left Cheltenham | 0:57:52 | 0:57:54
with some of the finest Regency architecture in the entire country. | 0:57:54 | 0:57:58
And, by creating bespoke bedrooms for their homeowners, | 0:57:58 | 0:58:02
our designers have added their own little touches of elegance | 0:58:02 | 0:58:04
to this most refined of spa towns. | 0:58:04 | 0:58:06
Next time, Victorian terraced living rooms. | 0:58:11 | 0:58:15
-Wow. -This is just so clever, actually. | 0:58:15 | 0:58:17
But breathing new life into these small spaces | 0:58:18 | 0:58:21
is fraught with challenges. | 0:58:21 | 0:58:23
I'm feeling really panicked. | 0:58:23 | 0:58:24
-Timing's an issue. -Yeah. -OK. | 0:58:24 | 0:58:26
Up the creek without a paddle. | 0:58:26 | 0:58:28 |
