Beautiful gardens are one of Britain's most glorious sights,

0:00:020:00:04

but if your green space is more mess than majestic,

0:00:040:00:06

making it over can be a daunting prospect,

0:00:060:00:09

especially if you're short on time and money.

0:00:090:00:13

Well, the Instant Gardener is here.

0:00:130:00:16

Ta-da!

0:00:160:00:17

Danny Clarke is an expert at transforming gardens.

0:00:170:00:22

These are really bringing a smile to my face.

0:00:220:00:24

Each time, our gardening guru will be showing you

0:00:240:00:27

how to create gorgeous garden makeovers.

0:00:270:00:31

Doesn't that look great?

0:00:310:00:32

Each transformation will be packed with brilliant ideas

0:00:320:00:35

to help you get to grips with your own outdoor space.

0:00:350:00:39

Just continually deadhead

0:00:390:00:41

and you will keep getting that plant to flower.

0:00:410:00:45

He'll be turning garden junk...

0:00:450:00:46

Oh, look at that!

0:00:460:00:48

..into garden jewels.

0:00:480:00:50

It's going to be used as a planter

0:00:500:00:52

and I think this is going to look absolutely terrific.

0:00:520:00:55

'And showing you how to spend a small budget wisely...'

0:00:560:00:59

-That's why Danny makes me bring a list.

-OK.

0:00:590:01:02

'..be it on shrubs or salvage.'

0:01:020:01:04

Would you like that in your garden?

0:01:050:01:07

And, because Danny is the Instant Gardener,

0:01:070:01:10

everything you see will happen in a single day.

0:01:100:01:13

Oh, thank you so much.

0:01:140:01:16

-Oh, wow!

-That's unbelievable!

0:01:160:01:18

Today we are a stone's throw from the south coast,

0:01:250:01:28

just outside Fareham in Hampshire.

0:01:280:01:30

With nearly 2,000 hours of sunshine a year,

0:01:300:01:33

this part of the UK boasts some of the best weather in Britain,

0:01:330:01:37

perfect for making the most of its green spaces.

0:01:370:01:40

We are here to meet a couple who just haven't had the time

0:01:400:01:43

to make the most of that little patch of green

0:01:430:01:45

and they are in need of some instant attention.

0:01:450:01:50

Hello! You must be Hayley.

0:01:520:01:54

-Yes.

-Dave.

0:01:540:01:56

-Hi.

-Nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:01:560:01:57

Let's have a look at this garden, then.

0:01:570:02:00

Hayley and Dave moved here four years ago,

0:02:000:02:02

shortly after experiencing a huge change in their lives.

0:02:020:02:06

Dave, a former captain in the Army,

0:02:060:02:08

was injured while serving in Afghanistan

0:02:080:02:11

and became a double amputee, losing both his lower legs.

0:02:110:02:14

Far from daunted, Dave began a PhD in biomedical engineering

0:02:140:02:19

and is now a successful para-athlete,

0:02:190:02:21

with his sights set on the Paralympics in Rio.

0:02:210:02:25

Alongside all of that,

0:02:250:02:26

they have also been renovating their home

0:02:260:02:28

for one-year-old daughter Emily,

0:02:280:02:30

so they've had no time to create the relaxing outdoor space

0:02:300:02:33

they desperately need.

0:02:330:02:34

That's where our Danny comes in.

0:02:390:02:40

He's keen to have a sneak peek at their back garden,

0:02:400:02:43

so, a few days earlier,

0:02:430:02:44

he drove to Fareham to see what he'll be up against.

0:02:440:02:48

I'm here today to get

0:02:480:02:50

a sneak preview of David and Hayley's garden,

0:02:500:02:52

just to get the old grey matter going.

0:02:520:02:56

Right, the first thing I notice here is this beautiful camellia

0:02:560:02:59

on the side, absolutely gorgeous.

0:02:590:03:01

Now, this looks like a very nice space.

0:03:020:03:04

It's secluded, which is very good.

0:03:040:03:07

The basics for the garden are here, so a typical patio.

0:03:070:03:11

It's quite slippery. There's definitely a build-up of algae here.

0:03:110:03:15

It's very weedy, so I'd say this patio definitely needs

0:03:150:03:18

a good tidy up.

0:03:180:03:19

Now, there's quite a bit of lawn here, but it's very shapeless

0:03:210:03:24

and, you know, it's raining today, and it's very sort of boggy.

0:03:240:03:27

You know, my heels are, like, digging into the lawn here.

0:03:270:03:30

And the garden runs away downwards, towards this side fence.

0:03:300:03:35

There's a pine in the middle over there.

0:03:360:03:38

It gives a bit of height to the garden

0:03:380:03:40

and is a very nice feature.

0:03:400:03:42

At the back, I can see a shed and a greenhouse.

0:03:420:03:44

Now, this garden, it does have its merits,

0:03:470:03:50

but also, you know, it's pretty boring, it's pretty standard.

0:03:500:03:53

We just need to take it to the gym, we just need to get it fit.

0:03:530:03:57

Build its muscles up again, and it's going to look absolutely fab.

0:03:570:04:01

Danny will definitely be flexing his own muscles

0:04:040:04:07

to get the garden into shape

0:04:070:04:09

and today he's come back to Fareham to get some input

0:04:090:04:12

from Hayley and Dave about exactly what they need.

0:04:120:04:14

Danny, Hayley.

0:04:160:04:17

-Dave, Hayley.

-Hi.

-Hello, Hayley.

0:04:170:04:19

-Hi.

-Hi, Dave, how's it going?

-Yeah, it's going good.

-Good.

0:04:190:04:21

How long have you been in this house?

0:04:210:04:23

Four years this summer, yeah.

0:04:230:04:25

-Yeah, four years.

-And how much work have you done on it?

0:04:250:04:28

We have mostly worked on the inside, haven't we?

0:04:280:04:30

-Yes, done more or less everything inside.

-Yeah.

0:04:300:04:32

-Added an upstairs, ramps outside, lots of painting.

-Lots of painting.

0:04:320:04:36

Did you have to make a lot of changes to make it accessible?

0:04:360:04:39

Erm, not too many structural changes, cos when we came in,

0:04:390:04:42

it still had the wide corridors and wide doorways, but we had to put

0:04:420:04:45

a bathroom in, which I could access from a wheelchair,

0:04:450:04:48

and we put a ramp at the front, which we could come in.

0:04:480:04:50

We had to put low sill doors in and a low sill door at the back here

0:04:500:04:53

-and a ramp to get into the garden.

-How much have you done out here?

0:04:530:04:56

-Mowed the grass.

-Yeah.

-LAUGHTER

0:04:560:04:58

De-weeded the patio a couple of times,

0:04:580:04:59

but, as you can see, they're back.

0:04:590:05:01

We've had to cut a couple of trees down.

0:05:010:05:04

Erm, yeah, that's about it.

0:05:040:05:05

It's still kind of out of bounds to us at the minute, the garden.

0:05:050:05:08

Weeding it, seems like permanently de-weeding it.

0:05:080:05:11

Yes, it's a fight. An ongoing fight.

0:05:110:05:13

-How much time do you have because you have a little girl?

-We do.

0:05:130:05:17

-You're training for Rio.

-Yep.

-And studying.

-Yeah..

0:05:170:05:20

How much spare time do you have?

0:05:200:05:22

-Erm, we have about half a day a week.

-Yeah.

0:05:220:05:25

Which we've got at the minute, where I'm not training, not studying,

0:05:250:05:30

but that tends to then get taken up with, you know,

0:05:300:05:32

just seeing the girls and spending some time with them.

0:05:320:05:35

So it's just kind of being maintained really

0:05:350:05:38

in the state that it's in.

0:05:380:05:39

For the nation's Olympic hopes, please don't start trying.

0:05:390:05:42

Just sit down when you get in and relax.

0:05:420:05:45

What would you like from your garden?

0:05:450:05:47

I think we just want somewhere where we can be and enjoy as a family.

0:05:470:05:51

It is a nice space

0:05:510:05:53

and the whole reason we bought this particular house

0:05:530:05:55

was because of how private it was.

0:05:550:05:57

I guess it was a opportunity where I could just feel like

0:05:570:06:01

there wasn't anyone looking at me.

0:06:010:06:03

And I do walk around with shorts outside in the real world

0:06:030:06:06

and people do see and do look because it's interesting,

0:06:060:06:09

and I'm OK with that,

0:06:090:06:10

but when I come home, I just want to have my privacy.

0:06:100:06:12

So we've kind of got this private space, but we want to expand that

0:06:120:06:15

to the outside, I guess.

0:06:150:06:16

So, have an area that I can actually access with Emily

0:06:160:06:19

and we can just go and play and sit out in the sunshine

0:06:190:06:22

-and enjoy what this country offers.

-Yeah.

0:06:220:06:24

-I think that's what we looking for.

-Relaxing kind of family space.

-Yeah.

0:06:240:06:27

But at the minute I can't really get anywhere that easily.

0:06:270:06:29

-It's probably the problem, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-So your privacy's important?

0:06:290:06:32

-Yeah.

-That's why you've got the tall hedges around.

-Yeah.

0:06:320:06:35

-Fairly tall.

-You've maintained them quite well.

0:06:350:06:37

-So don't cut those down.

-I won't, I promise.

0:06:370:06:41

That's one thing I won't be doing today.

0:06:410:06:43

-Well, I'm going to leave Dave here with you to help out.

-OK.

0:06:430:06:45

We'll get out of their hair.

0:06:450:06:47

-You got a list for me?

-I've got a list for you.

0:06:470:06:49

This is just so he keeps me on track.

0:06:490:06:51

"Lots of pots that are round, not square."

0:06:510:06:54

Not square. Definitely round.

0:06:540:06:56

-OK.

-That's all I need to say.

0:06:560:06:58

OK. DANNY LAUGHS

0:06:580:06:59

Have a lovely day, don't work too hard.

0:06:590:07:01

He's an athlete, he's got training.

0:07:010:07:03

As long as he doesn't work me too hard.

0:07:030:07:05

You can work as hard as you like. Come on.

0:07:050:07:07

-See you.

-See you, bye.

0:07:070:07:09

'So, while I head off with Hayley to get some potty ideas and some pots,

0:07:120:07:16

'Danny is the man with a plan, right, Danny?'

0:07:160:07:19

This garden's quite drab, but I want to show how,

0:07:190:07:22

with the power of planting, you can lift a drab garden

0:07:220:07:27

and make it look exciting.

0:07:270:07:28

One of the first jobs is to tidy up the patio over there.

0:07:280:07:32

It needs a good jet wash and it needs de-weeding.

0:07:320:07:35

If you look at the patio from this angle,

0:07:350:07:38

it's a pretty ordinary shape, but I want to give it some definition

0:07:380:07:41

and the way I'm going to do that

0:07:410:07:43

is to build in a bed and I'm going to make it piano-shaped

0:07:430:07:47

and it's going to curve round, sweep round into the step

0:07:470:07:50

and then we're going to continue that round to the shed.

0:07:500:07:54

So, this path isn't really performing much of a function.

0:07:540:07:58

It's just some ply that's been laid down.

0:07:580:08:01

It's skinny, you know, you can't really walk along it

0:08:010:08:04

and we need to make this safe for Dave and Hayley.

0:08:040:08:08

He wants to be able to use his greenhouse and his shed,

0:08:080:08:11

so we'll make this path very accessible for him.

0:08:110:08:14

For me, a narrow path is an absolute no-no.

0:08:140:08:18

So, when it comes to the style of planting,

0:08:180:08:20

I want to kind of continue that curved theme going through,

0:08:200:08:23

so we're going to have ribbons of planting.

0:08:230:08:25

I'm going to use grasses. I think it will look really funky,

0:08:250:08:28

so lots of grasses, prairie planting,

0:08:280:08:31

a few trees to have some accent in the garden

0:08:310:08:34

and I think it's going to work great.

0:08:340:08:37

So Danny's plan is to revive this tired old garden

0:08:370:08:40

by making a curvaceous flowerbed

0:08:400:08:42

that sweeps round to meet a stylishly shaped path.

0:08:420:08:45

Once finished, the garden will have swathes

0:08:450:08:47

of exciting prairie planting.

0:08:470:08:50

Dave, obviously, his privacy is very important,

0:08:500:08:53

so we're going to continue that.

0:08:530:08:54

But he also wants a nice, relaxing oasis.

0:08:540:08:57

He wants to relax but we can't, so we better get cracking.

0:08:580:09:02

You're not wrong there.

0:09:050:09:06

That's a lot to do in one day,

0:09:060:09:08

but you're not on your own.

0:09:080:09:10

As ever, you can call on handyman AJ

0:09:100:09:12

and regular helpers, Luke and Amyrose,

0:09:120:09:15

as well as Dave and Hayley's sister, Lauren.

0:09:150:09:18

Now, the job that I'd like you to do, Lauren, if it's OK,

0:09:180:09:21

could you jet wash the patio?

0:09:210:09:23

-Yeah.

-But I will de-weed it first, OK?

-OK.

0:09:230:09:25

Dave, can you do the mowing?

0:09:250:09:27

-All over it.

-Brilliant.

0:09:270:09:29

But the first thing we need to do is to clear the patio,

0:09:290:09:32

-so shall we get going?

-OK. Let's go.

-Brilliant.

-Good.

0:09:320:09:34

Let's do it.

0:09:340:09:35

The first obstacle is that huge trampoline.

0:09:360:09:39

Dave, this is a bit of a monstrosity.

0:09:390:09:41

-It is awful.

-I'm not a great fan...

0:09:410:09:43

If it accidentally breaks in transit,

0:09:430:09:46

-then that would be awesome.

-LAUGHTER

0:09:460:09:48

-We've got your permission to move it, then?

-Definitely.

-All right.

0:09:480:09:50

With Dave happy to give that trampoline the bounce,

0:09:530:09:55

the team get on with dismantling the frame bit by bit.

0:09:550:09:58

Hold it!

0:10:000:10:01

Unfortunately, it's still too big to go through the side gate...

0:10:040:10:07

It don't fit.

0:10:070:10:09

..even with all the feet removed,

0:10:090:10:12

so Danny moves it to the bottom of the garden to deal with later.

0:10:120:10:16

Now all the junk has been ditched,

0:10:190:10:21

Dave's had a thought about how he can work more efficiently.

0:10:210:10:24

Danny, I've just got to go and change my legs over quick so...

0:10:240:10:27

-OK.

-I've got to go and put my short little legs on,

0:10:270:10:30

which are the ones I use for lifting and moving stuff around

0:10:300:10:33

so I get them on before I start mowing the lawn.

0:10:330:10:35

-No problem.

-And I'll accidentally get rid of that trampoline

0:10:350:10:37

-for you as well.

-Excellent, maybe you can run it over.

0:10:370:10:40

Yeah, maybe!

0:10:400:10:41

Why is it important for you to change to your shorter legs?

0:10:410:10:44

These full-size legs that I've got on at the minute

0:10:440:10:46

have got a knee joint in it which is just essentially

0:10:460:10:48

like a hydraulic hinge -

0:10:480:10:50

I don't actually have any control over it,

0:10:500:10:52

so bending and lifting things can be quite difficult,

0:10:520:10:55

so at least on the short legs, there's nothing to bend,

0:10:550:10:57

they are a lot more stable, plus there's a bit of a cost element,

0:10:570:11:00

so these legs, these prosthetic legs,

0:11:000:11:02

are quite hi-tech and are quite expensive, whereas the little legs,

0:11:020:11:05

it doesn't matter that much if they get a bit knocked about.

0:11:050:11:07

Yeah, all right, then, I'll let you get on.

0:11:070:11:09

-Happy days.

-We've got a lot to do.

0:11:090:11:11

-See you in a minute.

-Cheers.

0:11:110:11:12

Wearing his shorter, more practical legs,

0:11:130:11:16

Dave can now cut the trampoline down to size so it can finally be removed

0:11:160:11:20

from the back garden.

0:11:200:11:21

And with the lawn cleared, Dave can mow it,

0:11:250:11:27

using a ride-on mower that's been adapted

0:11:270:11:29

to operate with hand controls.

0:11:290:11:31

Meanwhile, with the patio swept,

0:11:320:11:33

Danny is tackling those weeds with a strimmer.

0:11:330:11:36

With the team beginning to make inroads into the job,

0:11:410:11:43

I'm taking Hayley to visit somewhere I think will fire her imagination.

0:11:430:11:47

Hambrooks Garden Centre has 16 different show gardens on display.

0:11:490:11:54

I'm hoping to show Hayley how her garden

0:11:540:11:56

can become an extension of the house,

0:11:560:11:58

bringing touches of indoor luxury to the outside.

0:11:580:12:01

OK, so, Hayley, this place has lots of outdoor rooms,

0:12:020:12:05

lots of different ideas.

0:12:050:12:06

-Yes.

-What do you think of this one, for instance?

0:12:060:12:09

This looks lovely. You've got a nice seating area.

0:12:090:12:12

It would be lovely for entertaining in the evenings.

0:12:120:12:14

-Oh, yes.

-If we got to that stage rather than having an early bedtime.

0:12:140:12:18

But when you stay up past 9pm, that would be perfect?

0:12:190:12:21

Yes, exactly, a couple of years' time!

0:12:210:12:23

Now, this garden has a very distinct seaside theme, doesn't it?

0:12:250:12:29

Yes, appropriate for us, being near the coast.

0:12:290:12:32

-I like these.

-Yeah.

0:12:320:12:33

I quite like this as well.

0:12:330:12:35

Do you like random, quirky bits like that?

0:12:350:12:37

Yes, a bit of an interactive garden.

0:12:370:12:40

A water feature.

0:12:400:12:41

-Yep.

-Some good plants for Emily to rub her hands over.

0:12:410:12:45

Yeah, touchy-feely ones.

0:12:450:12:46

They have packed a lot into this space.

0:12:460:12:48

-They have.

-They have kind of created three separate areas, haven't they?

0:12:480:12:52

A dining area, water feature,

0:12:520:12:53

and this nice little dedicated play area.

0:12:530:12:56

-Yes.

-I love these upright sleepers.

0:12:560:12:58

Yep, nice fenced-in area for a little play area for Emily.

0:12:580:13:02

Spoken like a true mum. Safe, enclosed area.

0:13:020:13:05

She can run around here all she wants.

0:13:050:13:07

Oh, I love this star shape, I think that's really different.

0:13:090:13:12

It makes what could be a normal bed really interesting, doesn't it?

0:13:120:13:15

A bit more exciting, and I really like the white picket fence as well,

0:13:150:13:18

-it's very cutesy.

-Is this kind of your style, do you think?

0:13:180:13:21

The cottagey...

0:13:210:13:22

Yes, I really like it, I think it looks really pretty

0:13:220:13:25

-and its homely, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:13:250:13:26

While Hayley explores some new garden ideas,

0:13:260:13:29

there are changes taking place in her own garden.

0:13:290:13:32

Danny is starting on the new curved bed he's planning to put either side

0:13:320:13:36

of the steps. Creating new planting areas this way costs nothing,

0:13:360:13:39

and yet brings instant transformation.

0:13:390:13:41

Now, you may have to wish me luck here,

0:13:410:13:44

because it may take a couple of goes.

0:13:440:13:46

Using spray paint, Danny marks out the curves, judging with his eye.

0:13:460:13:51

With his new beds marked out,

0:13:550:13:57

Danny now needs to remove the unwanted turf.

0:13:570:14:00

So what I'm going to do, I'm using this half-moon edger, Dave,

0:14:000:14:03

and I want to go down as straight as possible.

0:14:030:14:05

-Yep.

-Follow the line around. So I can leave out with you?

0:14:050:14:08

-Yeah, all right.

-There you go, mate.

-Beautiful.

-Cheers.

0:14:080:14:11

But Dave's an old hand at this.

0:14:110:14:12

The last time I cut turf

0:14:120:14:16

was building bomb shelters on an exercise.

0:14:160:14:18

Lauren, however, is less of an old hand at pressure washing,

0:14:200:14:23

so AJ offers her a masterclass.

0:14:230:14:24

Lauren, come over here. This is your task.

0:14:260:14:30

Right then, you need to be about four inches away from there.

0:14:310:14:35

Keep it always going away from you,

0:14:350:14:37

otherwise your trainers are going to get wet.

0:14:370:14:39

But the whole idea of it

0:14:390:14:40

is obviously to get this sort of green mildew off

0:14:400:14:43

because when it is wet, it is very slippy.

0:14:430:14:45

-Perfect.

-Watch the power.

0:14:450:14:47

Feel the power of it. That's it. Oh, professional.

0:14:470:14:51

-Brilliant. I'll leave you to it.

-See you.

0:14:510:14:53

Power washers are a quick and easy way

0:14:560:14:58

to completely revive a dirty patio.

0:14:580:15:00

The high-pressure jet forces dust and grime from even the smallest

0:15:000:15:04

of crevasses to make the slabs look as good as new.

0:15:040:15:07

Looks really good, doesn't it? How's it going?

0:15:070:15:09

Yeah, it looks so much better.

0:15:090:15:10

I can't believe a bit of water...

0:15:100:15:12

Back at the show gardens,

0:15:180:15:19

Hayley and I are appreciating the benefits

0:15:190:15:22

of the outdoor room approach to garden design.

0:15:220:15:24

To learn more, we're meeting head designer Mike Hodges.

0:15:240:15:27

Hayley, this is Mike.

0:15:290:15:30

-Hi, Mike. Nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:15:300:15:33

Our garden rooms expert.

0:15:330:15:34

What do you mean by a garden room?

0:15:340:15:37

Well, mostly nowadays,

0:15:370:15:38

most gardens are very small and people want to treat

0:15:380:15:41

an outdoor space just like they do inside.

0:15:410:15:44

I feel like you've got very distinct styles

0:15:440:15:46

in all of these different gardens.

0:15:460:15:47

What's the trick to making the most of a small garden?

0:15:470:15:50

Try and get the longest point of the garden, so try and pick a corner,

0:15:500:15:53

the sunniest corner to look back at the house,

0:15:530:15:55

that gives you a long view.

0:15:550:15:57

Try and put trellis in the foreground

0:15:570:15:58

or plants in the foreground, which again just makes the garden

0:15:580:16:01

look a lot deeper.

0:16:010:16:02

It's funny, cos you tend to look at your house and you think

0:16:020:16:05

of a style and you pick decoration and furniture to match that,

0:16:050:16:08

but you don't necessarily do that for your garden, do you?

0:16:080:16:10

-I don't.

-No, ours definitely doesn't match the house at the moment,

0:16:100:16:14

-that's for sure.

-What would you say your style is?

0:16:140:16:16

I think I try to go for more of a country theme,

0:16:160:16:18

but I've definitely got a few child accessories around the house now

0:16:180:16:22

as well to add in.

0:16:220:16:23

Can you have a stylish garden if you have a small child?

0:16:230:16:26

You certainly can, yes.

0:16:260:16:27

We do a lot of gardens with built-in storage like a big corner unit,

0:16:270:16:30

-made in decking.

-Let's go and have a look at that one, shall we?

0:16:300:16:33

-Yes, for sure.

-Because that one might be quite useful for you.

0:16:330:16:36

My word, Mike, this is nicer than most rooms in my house.

0:16:390:16:41

The kitchen is certainly nicer than my kitchen.

0:16:410:16:44

-It's amazing, isn't it?

-Yes, it's beautiful.

0:16:440:16:46

So, how difficult is it to create a garden

0:16:460:16:48

-for a family with different needs?

-Well, it's very good,

0:16:480:16:51

even in a small space we have a built-in seat

0:16:510:16:53

that the kids' toys can be put away when you're entertaining.

0:16:530:16:56

We have a water-safe fountain there for children.

0:16:560:16:59

We have a dining area and even a kitchen area for entertaining.

0:16:590:17:03

But if you put a kitchen outside,

0:17:030:17:05

isn't that going to ruin in the wind and rain?

0:17:050:17:07

No, the worktop's granite and there's granite on the floor as well

0:17:070:17:11

so it's perfectly OK.

0:17:110:17:12

All the sides are made out of decking boards

0:17:120:17:14

and it's all treated with an outdoor wood paint.

0:17:140:17:16

How easy is it to look after and maintain?

0:17:160:17:18

This garden is very low-maintenance,

0:17:180:17:20

with a granite floor, with all the borders planted

0:17:200:17:22

-with evergreen plants and herbs.

-No grass to cut.

0:17:220:17:25

Yes, no grass to cut, ideal.

0:17:250:17:27

-Mike, thank you so much for your advice.

-No problem.

0:17:270:17:30

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

-Let's sit here all afternoon,

0:17:300:17:32

-it's brilliant, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:17:320:17:33

When it comes to designing a garden, you need a mix of science and art.

0:17:350:17:40

Walls, raised beds,

0:17:400:17:41

pergolas and other hard landscaping features provide a permanent,

0:17:410:17:45

year-round structure.

0:17:450:17:47

Get those right and you can move your plants around to suit.

0:17:470:17:51

You don't want the whole garden to be visible from any or every spot.

0:17:510:17:54

Use bends in the paths,

0:17:540:17:56

large specimen plants and even mirrors

0:17:560:17:58

to block or trick the eye as you look around the garden.

0:17:580:18:01

And while no garden is complete without plants,

0:18:030:18:05

it's the other touches that give a garden that individual touch,

0:18:050:18:09

so keep an eye out for interesting ways to accessorise your garden.

0:18:090:18:13

Back at Hayley's own garden,

0:18:150:18:16

four hours have already been eaten up,

0:18:160:18:19

but it hardly looks any different, despite all the hard work.

0:18:190:18:23

Danny's plan is that the new flower bed will curve around the patio

0:18:230:18:27

and link it up with a new path

0:18:270:18:28

leading to the shed and the glasshouse.

0:18:280:18:31

It's a job for AJ and sounds straightforward,

0:18:310:18:34

but it's not going to be easy when the path is in front of a patio

0:18:340:18:37

that's being jet washed.

0:18:370:18:39

We're having problems.

0:18:390:18:41

It's just the water seeping through the patio,

0:18:410:18:44

finding its way down to its lowest point.

0:18:440:18:47

AJ's got a solution up his sleeve.

0:18:490:18:51

He's spotted a way of recycling a pile of old bricks and breeze blocks

0:18:510:18:54

he's seen outside the front of Dave and Hayley's house.

0:18:540:18:57

There's, like, half a house being broken down.

0:18:590:19:01

There is a fair bit of quite small bits of rubble

0:19:010:19:06

which I'm going to have to put down here as hard-core first,

0:19:060:19:09

just to give it a bit of strength,

0:19:090:19:11

then we can then start cementing and putting the slabs down.

0:19:110:19:15

But before he can do any of that,

0:19:160:19:18

AJ needs to put in some edging to retain the hard-core.

0:19:180:19:22

As you can see, we've got this metal edging -

0:19:220:19:24

put the spikes in and that will contain

0:19:240:19:26

whatever you are going to put inside for the path.

0:19:260:19:28

Although he's got the framework in place,

0:19:300:19:32

AJ is worried about using cement

0:19:320:19:34

when the path area is soaking wet.

0:19:340:19:37

-Danny, this is the problem we've got here now.

-A bit of a flood.

0:19:370:19:41

-Yep.

-How about if we were to start jet washing down the bottom?

0:19:410:19:44

We leave this bit alone for now and we can come back to this later?

0:19:440:19:47

To stop jet washing up here will stop adding water to this.

0:19:470:19:50

-Yeah.

-I'll just get this out here

0:19:500:19:52

and then I'll have to just sit and wait.

0:19:520:19:55

Waiting for the flooding to drain away does, however,

0:19:560:19:59

give AJ time to get on with another important job,

0:19:590:20:02

salvaging plenty of that unwanted rubble

0:20:020:20:04

at the front of Dave and Hayley's house.

0:20:040:20:07

It'll be ideal as a firm base for the new path.

0:20:070:20:09

Best of all, it won't cost a thing.

0:20:090:20:12

Hopefully Dave will be happy.

0:20:120:20:13

I'm doing him a favour, using some of this in his garden.

0:20:130:20:17

Just going to rake it over, just try and...

0:20:210:20:23

It's going to help soak up this water as well.

0:20:230:20:25

It's going to make it a lot easier once I've compacted it down

0:20:250:20:29

to start laying the slabs on top.

0:20:290:20:31

And to compact it down, AJ is going old school,

0:20:320:20:34

with something he's borrowed - a whole concrete breeze block.

0:20:340:20:38

As we haven't got a wacker plate...

0:20:380:20:40

..give this a bit of a whack down...

0:20:420:20:44

..just to try and compact it.

0:20:450:20:47

Compacting this hard-core down

0:20:470:20:50

will make it all nice and tight so it won't move.

0:20:500:20:54

It's made it also a little bit flatter,

0:20:540:20:56

so it's going to be easier to lay the slabs.

0:20:560:20:58

Put that back, he'll never know we've used it, will he?

0:21:000:21:02

Don't worry, AJ, I think Dave is far too busy working on the new border.

0:21:070:21:11

How are you getting on, Dave?

0:21:110:21:12

Yeah. Yeah,

0:21:130:21:15

so I've cut all around the edges and now I'm just digging the turf away

0:21:150:21:19

from the line and then we can strip the rest of it.

0:21:190:21:21

You're not working hard enough.

0:21:210:21:22

-Yeah, I don't think so.

-You're not breathing heavily enough.

0:21:220:21:25

-I know.

-Are you going to put your back into it?

0:21:250:21:27

I thought you had to get away.

0:21:270:21:28

Well, I have to train, but I think I've got time for five more minutes.

0:21:280:21:33

So, what are you training for, Dave?

0:21:330:21:35

Well, I'm hoping to get selected for Paralympics this summer,

0:21:350:21:39

so I sprint in the 100 and 200 metres,

0:21:390:21:42

although training is hard and there's no places given away,

0:21:420:21:46

so I feel like I'm right on the edge at the minute.

0:21:460:21:49

-OK.

-So, yes, working hard for this summer

0:21:490:21:51

-and trying to get across to Brazil.

-Right.

0:21:510:21:53

I'm just out of breath just thinking about it.

0:21:530:21:55

And what does your training entail?

0:21:560:21:59

The training for me in a normal week is five days' worth of training.

0:21:590:22:02

I do my track session in the morning and come back,

0:22:020:22:05

have some food and get my gym session done.

0:22:050:22:06

-Yeah.

-So just lots and lots of hard work.

0:22:060:22:08

And you can't really miss a training session, can you?

0:22:080:22:11

No, certainly not at this stage,

0:22:110:22:12

every session counts, it's important.

0:22:120:22:14

I better not keep you, then.

0:22:140:22:16

I don't want you to be late so maybe you should just go and I'll catch up

0:22:160:22:18

-with you later.

-All right, cheers, Danny.

-Cheers, bye.

-Bye.

0:22:180:22:21

As Dave leaves for his daily training,

0:22:250:22:27

I'm keen to find out more from Hayley

0:22:270:22:29

about his drive and determination.

0:22:290:22:31

The injuries Dave received while on active service in Afghanistan

0:22:310:22:35

led to the amputation of his right leg above the knee

0:22:350:22:38

and his left leg through the knee.

0:22:380:22:40

I want to find out what impact these traumatic events have had

0:22:400:22:43

on their lives.

0:22:430:22:45

So, Dave lost his legs in 2011,

0:22:470:22:51

and at that point you weren't married and you didn't have Emily.

0:22:510:22:54

Take me back to that time.

0:22:540:22:55

I mean, that must have been a heck of a phone call for you to get.

0:22:550:22:58

I got a visit from Dave's parents so...

0:22:580:23:00

..with the welfare officer and they came round to tell me the news.

0:23:020:23:05

Yeah, so we then sort of got on with the rest of the year,

0:23:050:23:08

he got on with getting better.

0:23:080:23:10

He was walking eight weeks after he got injured

0:23:100:23:13

and I carried on with my teacher training

0:23:130:23:16

and then, yes, he got more and more into sport,

0:23:160:23:18

he did some swims that summer

0:23:180:23:20

and then, ten months to the day after losing his legs,

0:23:200:23:22

he was then on his running blades and moving quickly again,

0:23:220:23:26

-which he likes doing.

-So he's a sprinter.

0:23:260:23:28

-Yes.

-He's had good success at the World Championships

0:23:280:23:31

and he's got an eye on Rio. How is that going?

0:23:310:23:33

He thinks training is going really well at the moment,

0:23:330:23:35

so it's all really positive.

0:23:350:23:37

That wasn't what he was expecting to do, was it?

0:23:370:23:39

He was quite a dedicated military career man.

0:23:390:23:43

Yes, he'd always had his eyes on being in the army,

0:23:430:23:46

and so a slight change of plan now -

0:23:460:23:48

he's out of the army and he's got a PhD going on,

0:23:480:23:51

so that's going to be sort of a future career,

0:23:510:23:54

looking at biomechanics of amputees

0:23:540:23:57

and sort of making life better for him

0:23:570:23:59

and other people in a similar situation.

0:23:590:24:02

I can't believe how busy he is, because...

0:24:020:24:04

-Yes.

-Because one of those things is a full-time job,

0:24:040:24:07

and then you add to that Emily as well.

0:24:070:24:10

I mean, he must be meeting himself coming backwards.

0:24:100:24:13

Yes, I think he likes pushing himself.

0:24:130:24:15

He's very driven, very determined.

0:24:150:24:18

He finds it difficult to say no to things

0:24:180:24:19

and he's got some awesome things on the go at the moment.

0:24:190:24:22

He enjoys doing it all,

0:24:220:24:23

he likes doing the things that make him happy

0:24:230:24:25

and running makes him happy. He's always liked running,

0:24:250:24:28

even before he got injured,

0:24:280:24:30

but now he can run 200 metres faster than most able-bodied people can.

0:24:300:24:34

How proud are you of him?

0:24:340:24:35

He's achieving a lot,

0:24:350:24:37

he's going after a lot in terms of the studies and the Olympics.

0:24:370:24:40

Oh, so proud, I kind of...

0:24:400:24:42

I want to make sure I kind of capture it all for Emily

0:24:420:24:45

so that she is aware of it when she's older as well,

0:24:450:24:48

cos he's doing so many things it's just unbelievable.

0:24:480:24:51

I don't know how he gets by on so little sleep.

0:24:510:24:53

He's getting up at 4am to go to London to do his PhD

0:24:530:24:56

and making sure that he can come back in time

0:24:560:24:58

to see Emily before she goes to bed

0:24:580:25:00

and things like that, so he's stretching himself to the limit.

0:25:000:25:04

What about you? You're supporting everyone!

0:25:040:25:06

Yes, but, I mean, that's...

0:25:060:25:08

That's kind of...

0:25:080:25:10

That's cool, that's me at the moment.

0:25:100:25:12

Well, you seem to have a smile on your face nonstop.

0:25:120:25:14

Yeah. There's lots to be proud of, isn't there?

0:25:140:25:17

I'm in awe.

0:25:170:25:18

-What a man.

-He's all right.

0:25:180:25:21

You're going to stick with him for a bit longer?

0:25:210:25:23

Yeah. He'll do, he'll do for now.

0:25:230:25:25

With Dave still away at training,

0:25:270:25:29

Danny and the team are also being put through their paces.

0:25:290:25:32

There are only three hours left to knock this garden into shape,

0:25:320:25:36

but the turf is still being lifted to make the new flowerbeds.

0:25:360:25:39

At least AJ is making good progress with the path.

0:25:390:25:42

-Hello, AJ.

-Hello, mate.

-How's it going?

0:25:480:25:50

It's looking good, it's looking good.

0:25:500:25:52

I'm just putting them down.

0:25:520:25:54

Just working it out first.

0:25:540:25:56

So are you happy with the gaps?

0:25:560:25:57

I like it, AJ, I think it looks great.

0:25:570:25:59

AJ, you're a genius.

0:25:590:26:01

We've done it again. But we haven't finished.

0:26:010:26:03

We haven't finished.

0:26:030:26:05

And while Lauren takes on a new job of turning over

0:26:050:26:07

the heavy clay soil in the new bed,

0:26:070:26:09

Danny has spotted another planting opportunity.

0:26:090:26:12

I like this pine tree.

0:26:130:26:14

I think it's great.

0:26:140:26:16

It's hiding that very unattractive shed,

0:26:160:26:18

so it actually performs a good function

0:26:180:26:20

but also it's giving a bit of height to the garden.

0:26:200:26:23

Now, the thing that I've noticed is that there is a bed under here,

0:26:230:26:27

an old bed that's overgrown.

0:26:270:26:30

There's a couple of primulas in there

0:26:300:26:32

and what I'd like to do is reinstate this bed

0:26:320:26:34

so what I need to do is to lift the crown of this tree.

0:26:340:26:38

The crown means all the branches and leaves from the bottom

0:26:380:26:41

to the top of a tree, so in order to raise the crown,

0:26:410:26:44

Danny needs to cut off all of the lower branches.

0:26:440:26:47

Expose this trunk here and that will give me room

0:26:470:26:51

to do some lovely planting in this bed.

0:26:510:26:54

I've got nice sharp loppers and all I need to do now

0:26:540:26:58

is chop away until my heart's content.

0:26:580:27:00

Raising the crown not only improves the look of a tree,

0:27:010:27:04

it also allows more light and air to get through

0:27:040:27:08

-to anything planted beneath it.

-The soil here is lovely.

0:27:080:27:11

Just look at this, it's all nice and crumbly.

0:27:110:27:14

This has been caused by leaf mould

0:27:140:27:17

from the leaves dropping from this pine.

0:27:170:27:19

So it's been nourishing the environment that it's growing in.

0:27:190:27:23

I've just discovered a wild primrose here.

0:27:230:27:26

This has probably self-seeded.

0:27:260:27:27

I'm just going to be careful and do some microsurgery around it.

0:27:270:27:30

Just pull the grass gently, so we want to expose that.

0:27:300:27:35

There we go.

0:27:350:27:37

To be fair,

0:27:380:27:40

we could do with some of this over the rest of the garden.

0:27:400:27:43

Don't worry, Danny, the garden looks like it's really starting

0:27:460:27:49

to come together.

0:27:490:27:50

Meanwhile, Hayley and I are back on the road,

0:27:540:27:56

ready to make our own contribution to the garden.

0:27:560:27:59

Danny's asked us to find round pots

0:27:590:28:02

to suit the curvy overall design he's after.

0:28:020:28:05

I guess we'd better have a look a-ROUND then.

0:28:050:28:07

Because Hayley liked some of the quirky items

0:28:080:28:11

she saw in the show gardens,

0:28:110:28:12

we've come to an antiques and salvage yard.

0:28:120:28:15

Old second-hand items can be fun to search for and offer your garden

0:28:150:28:19

unique touches that can't be found on the high street

0:28:190:28:22

or in conventional garden centres.

0:28:220:28:25

Plenty for us to look at in here.

0:28:250:28:26

Lots of bits and bobs.

0:28:260:28:28

-Shall we have an explore?

-Yeah.

0:28:280:28:30

-You go that way, I'll go that way.

-For sure.

0:28:300:28:33

-See you in a bit.

-See you in a minute.

0:28:330:28:35

Architectural salvage yards are a treasure trove of goods

0:28:350:28:38

to reclaim and re-purpose, right up the Instant Gardener's street.

0:28:380:28:42

And this one is on Hayley's doorstep,

0:28:420:28:44

chock-full of everything you can think of,

0:28:440:28:47

the wonderful and the wacky.

0:28:470:28:48

What do you think, then, Hayley?

0:28:480:28:50

Is there anything that has caught your eye

0:28:500:28:52

-or taken your fancy?

-There's lots of amazing bits and pieces,

0:28:520:28:55

but nothing that really fits the brief we were given.

0:28:550:28:58

If we were building a house, I think you could have a field day

0:28:580:29:01

in this busy little reclaim yard,

0:29:010:29:03

because there are loads of quirky things.

0:29:030:29:05

I mean, this, for instance,

0:29:050:29:06

if you were going to bury this in your garden,

0:29:060:29:08

-you could put little rockery plants in it, that would be cool.

-Mm-hm.

0:29:080:29:11

However we don't have a forklift truck that we can take home.

0:29:110:29:14

-I do know a man who might be able to help us out.

-Right.

0:29:140:29:17

Tom!

0:29:200:29:21

'And that man is the site owner, Tom Baker.'

0:29:210:29:23

We are in search of some round pots that would be suitable for a garden.

0:29:230:29:27

-Yep.

-Lead the way.

-OK.

0:29:270:29:30

You have got so much stuff here, where do you get it all?

0:29:300:29:33

Local demolition jobs.

0:29:330:29:34

We buy the materials and sell it on again.

0:29:340:29:36

I would imagine there is quite a big market for this sort of stuff.

0:29:360:29:40

Everybody loves something random and vintage like that,

0:29:400:29:43

for instance, the "Infants" sign.

0:29:430:29:44

Yeah, there is a home for everything.

0:29:440:29:46

Do you get a lot of people coming in here

0:29:460:29:48

just for unusual things to add to their home?

0:29:480:29:50

It's mainly extensions and grade two listed buildings,

0:29:510:29:55

conservation work we get involved in, so it's big jobs, small jobs.

0:29:550:29:59

We do all sorts, really.

0:29:590:30:00

You weren't wrong, you've got a lot of round pots.

0:30:000:30:02

-There you go.

-So these are all chimney pots?

0:30:020:30:04

Yeah, a lot of them don't go back as chimney pots,

0:30:040:30:06

they all go for flowerpots and garden features nowadays.

0:30:060:30:10

Hayley, have a ratch among those.

0:30:100:30:11

-Yeah, I will do.

-We OK to just go in and have a look around?

0:30:110:30:14

-No problem, knock yourself out.

-Thank you.

-All right, then.

0:30:140:30:16

We've got a stack of chimneys to look through,

0:30:160:30:19

but will any of them light Hayley's fire?

0:30:190:30:21

Meanwhile, back at the garden,

0:30:250:30:27

I'd like to light a bonfire under Danny

0:30:270:30:28

because he's only got two hours left to finish this transformation.

0:30:280:30:32

Luckily, Paralympic hopeful Dave is back to help out.

0:30:320:30:37

Hi, Danny, all right?

0:30:370:30:38

Yeah. How was the training?

0:30:380:30:40

-Yeah, it's good.

-Went well?

0:30:400:30:41

-Yeah.

-I hope you're not too worn out.

0:30:410:30:43

-I'll be all right.

-Are you sure?

0:30:430:30:44

-Yeah, yeah.

-OK, that's good.

-I need a job!

0:30:440:30:46

I just want to show you what AJ is working on,

0:30:460:30:48

just to make sure you're happy with it.

0:30:480:30:50

Yeah, yeah. Look at this.

0:30:500:30:52

-Wow.

-What do you reckon to it, do you like it?

0:30:520:30:54

Yeah, it's incredible.

0:30:540:30:56

-Did you start this yesterday or something?

-Ha-ha!

0:30:560:30:59

It's moved on quite quickly.

0:30:590:31:00

It's been pretty rapid.

0:31:000:31:02

-Will that suit you, do you think?

-Oh, yes, without a doubt.

0:31:020:31:04

What we're going to do is lay the path and you see the gaps there?

0:31:040:31:09

They're going to be filled with decorative stone.

0:31:090:31:11

-Wow.

-And then we're going to plant some aromatic plants into that.

0:31:110:31:15

-OK.

-So when you walk on it, it's going to release this lovely aroma,

0:31:150:31:18

this lovely smell. How cool is that?

0:31:180:31:20

So they're plants I can jump up and down on?

0:31:200:31:22

Yes, you can jump up and down on them.

0:31:220:31:23

You can abuse them and they'll be absolutely fine.

0:31:230:31:26

-They'll survive.

-Brilliant.

0:31:260:31:27

I think we better get moving,

0:31:270:31:29

because I would imagine Hayley isn't too far away

0:31:290:31:32

and we want to get this done before she gets back.

0:31:320:31:34

-Yeah.

-So I'm going to show you what we'll do next.

-Yep.

0:31:340:31:37

Right, so this is the next job.

0:31:370:31:39

So we're going to edge this in this aluminium lawn edging.

0:31:390:31:42

-Yes.

-You can use it for a multitude of things, like edging a path,

0:31:420:31:46

you can even have a mini raised bed with it and what's good about this,

0:31:460:31:50

it's bendy. What I'd do is just lay them out roughly.

0:31:500:31:53

-Yeah.

-Just get an idea of distances,

0:31:530:31:56

and what it does, it keeps the shape of the lawn.

0:31:560:31:58

-You see these grooves?

-Yep.

0:31:580:32:00

-They interlock into grooves on the other one.

-OK, brilliant.

0:32:000:32:04

There we go.

0:32:040:32:06

And what you do is you do it

0:32:060:32:08

low enough into the ground so your lawnmower,

0:32:080:32:11

when you're near the edge, your lawnmower goes over the top.

0:32:110:32:14

-OK.

-So it doesn't catch on the blades.

-Gotcha.

0:32:140:32:16

Now, I'm hoping that that

0:32:160:32:20

will fit in fairly snugly,

0:32:200:32:22

so that's where it's going to go,

0:32:220:32:24

but I need to dig a trench to fit this in.

0:32:240:32:26

-Yep.

-So that could be a job for you to do, perhaps.

0:32:260:32:29

-Yeah, I'll do that.

-Do you want to do a little trench?

-Yep.

0:32:290:32:31

I normally use the back of the spade to be honest, get a straight line,

0:32:310:32:35

just go down like that. About three inches.

0:32:350:32:37

-Gotcha.

-And just follow that line round.

0:32:380:32:40

-Happy days.

-OK.

-Yeah, brilliant.

0:32:400:32:42

With the trench dug and the edging hammered into position,

0:32:460:32:49

the beds are now ready for planting.

0:32:490:32:51

-Lovely.

-That's going to do it, isn't it?

-That's lovely.

0:32:540:32:57

Do you think Hayley will like it?

0:32:570:32:59

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

0:32:590:33:00

hopefully she won't even notice the trampoline.

0:33:000:33:03

Hopefully she'll notice the trampoline has gone

0:33:030:33:05

long after we have gone.

0:33:050:33:06

Yeah, yeah, then I'll just have to deal with it on my own.

0:33:060:33:09

-You have to deal with it, yeah, that's fine with me.

-All right.

0:33:090:33:12

Deal.

0:33:120:33:13

Having cemented the slabs into place,

0:33:150:33:17

AJ now needs to make sure they are rock solid.

0:33:170:33:21

The cement hasn't quite gone completely

0:33:210:33:23

under the whole of the slab,

0:33:230:33:24

like some of the corners.

0:33:240:33:26

The best way for me to do this is to put a wedge in underneath,

0:33:260:33:30

so, otherwise, when you step on it, it will rock.

0:33:300:33:35

There we go.

0:33:350:33:36

At last it's planting time and Danny has opted for prairie planting,

0:33:400:33:44

using tall, elegant grasses and willowy perennials to give a soft

0:33:440:33:48

and natural look. But they also need a bit of structure

0:33:480:33:51

and he's chosen just the thing.

0:33:510:33:54

So these beauties can grow up to 30 feet,

0:33:540:33:57

and the beauty about these is that they will keep their shape,

0:33:570:34:01

but it's best to plant them in a sheltered position for two reasons.

0:34:010:34:05

They can be prone to being blown over

0:34:050:34:07

and they could be scorched by the wind.

0:34:070:34:10

Right, so I'm going to put these in position

0:34:100:34:12

and I'm using these as my accent plants.

0:34:120:34:15

These are going to lead your eye through the garden.

0:34:150:34:18

And for his under planting, Danny is going for grasses.

0:34:190:34:23

I love grasses.

0:34:230:34:26

Now, the theme of this garden is all about prairie planting.

0:34:260:34:30

Now, this is Stipa gigantea absolutely beautiful.

0:34:300:34:33

Now, this will grow quite tall.

0:34:330:34:34

It is deciduous, it means it will go brown in the winter but, you know,

0:34:340:34:38

I wouldn't cut it back, I'd leave it brown,

0:34:380:34:41

and as the new growth comes through in the spring,

0:34:410:34:45

then I would cut it back and you'll have nice, fresh, blades of grass.

0:34:450:34:50

Well, you've sold it to me, Danny.

0:34:500:34:52

You just need to get them planted now.

0:34:520:34:54

Meanwhile Hayley and I are still at the salvage yard

0:34:560:34:58

on the hunt for some round-shaped pots.

0:34:580:35:01

I kind of like these, but...

0:35:010:35:03

Yeah.

0:35:050:35:07

They are not round, technically, are they?

0:35:070:35:10

No, they're sort of trying to be at the top, aren't they?

0:35:100:35:13

But not quite succeeding.

0:35:130:35:15

What about that? Um, it's different, do you like it?

0:35:150:35:20

Again, be honest.

0:35:200:35:22

-Put it that way.

-Yeah, you could put it upside down, I guess.

0:35:220:35:24

She's not convinced. She's not convinced.

0:35:240:35:26

-It might be a bit wobbly.

-OK, veto that.

0:35:260:35:28

Yes or no? It's your garden.

0:35:290:35:32

I prefer the other two that were over there.

0:35:320:35:34

I think they look nicer.

0:35:340:35:36

Sounds good to me.

0:35:360:35:37

Hayley has her eye on some old chimney pots

0:35:370:35:39

that she thinks we could re-purpose as planters.

0:35:390:35:43

Is this the kind of thing you envisaged in your garden?

0:35:430:35:45

Yeah, I think it works.

0:35:450:35:47

I think this would work and actually some of the slabs

0:35:470:35:49

that we've got with the patio,

0:35:490:35:51

with the ramp that got put in out the back,

0:35:510:35:53

that they are a sort of mix of terracotta

0:35:530:35:55

with actually a kind of whiter kind of slab when it's cleaned, so...

0:35:550:36:00

-So these might...?

-Some of these would work.

0:36:000:36:02

-They're the right kind of colouring.

-OK, well, what about...

0:36:020:36:06

I guess the thing we have to be careful with -

0:36:080:36:10

you have a one-year-old.

0:36:100:36:11

Yes, so something that's sturdy.

0:36:110:36:15

She's not Superwoman, but she could knock that over.

0:36:150:36:18

-That's a nice shape.

-That would be quite cool

0:36:180:36:21

with things spilling out of it.

0:36:210:36:23

Yeah, could have some strawberry plants.

0:36:230:36:26

Yeah, strawberry plants trailing out of there.

0:36:260:36:28

Eventually, with Hayley deciding on a pair

0:36:280:36:31

of curvy cream-coloured chimney pots,

0:36:310:36:33

we head back to the house so she can look after one-year-old Emily

0:36:330:36:37

while I help Danny get the makeover finished.

0:36:370:36:40

Now, my idea of planting is to fill the bed out as much as possible.

0:36:400:36:44

I do not like to see any earth, because the way I see it,

0:36:440:36:48

the more plants you have, the less weeds you have.

0:36:480:36:51

This is called a verbena.

0:36:510:36:53

Just look at that. Look at that flower.

0:36:530:36:56

Now, this kind of glows in the evening sun.

0:36:560:36:59

It's got a translucent effect, so as the sun's going down,

0:36:590:37:03

these actually sing out at you.

0:37:030:37:05

And you know what great about these?

0:37:050:37:06

If you look very closely, most stems are round,

0:37:060:37:09

but this has got a lovely square stem.

0:37:090:37:12

Now, all you need to do is, later on in the year,

0:37:120:37:16

just cut these down and they will come back later on.

0:37:160:37:19

These do actually self-seed,

0:37:190:37:21

so in time they will run beautifully through this bed.

0:37:210:37:26

Danny, there's only an hour to go!

0:37:260:37:28

You're the one that needs to run through that bed,

0:37:280:37:30

preferably with a spade.

0:37:300:37:32

At least AJ is ready to add the final touches to his path.

0:37:320:37:35

Right, then, I've just finished spotting the slabs with the cement.

0:37:360:37:41

So now that's all done, now I've just got to put decorative stones

0:37:410:37:44

all around it. These don't help with the structure at all,

0:37:440:37:47

they're just decorative,

0:37:470:37:49

so you can choose any colour you like to go with the slab

0:37:490:37:52

that you bought and mix-and-match, you know,

0:37:520:37:54

the world is your oyster, it's your garden - have it how you want it.

0:37:540:37:58

-Danny!

-Oh, look at these!

0:38:030:38:06

Oh, I love it.

0:38:060:38:08

-Is that what you wanted?

-Well...

0:38:080:38:09

I left it up to you, but this is absolutely wonderful.

0:38:090:38:12

-It's round.

-Yes.

0:38:120:38:13

I saw some square ones that I liked. Hayley didn't like them.

0:38:130:38:16

-I'm glad.

-I've got another one.

0:38:160:38:18

And you know what I like about this as well?

0:38:180:38:19

That you've got two different heights,

0:38:190:38:21

two different sizes going on.

0:38:210:38:22

-So whose idea was that?

-Gold star for me, eh?

0:38:220:38:25

-Gold star for me.

-I know, I'm impressed.

0:38:250:38:27

-Where are they going to go?

-I'm not really sure at the moment,

0:38:270:38:30

but do you suggest? Maybe to frame the path, maybe to one side?

0:38:300:38:34

It's a bit obvious to put one on either side.

0:38:340:38:37

-Together.

-So let's put them together.

0:38:370:38:38

-That's it, watch your back.

-Here?

0:38:380:38:40

Yeah, just put it there.

0:38:400:38:42

I might just be inclined to stagger it a bit, what do you think?

0:38:420:38:46

Yeah, I like them.

0:38:460:38:47

-Yeah?

-Perfecto.

0:38:470:38:49

Before we deal with the chimney pots,

0:38:510:38:52

I've got some aromatic plants for the path.

0:38:520:38:55

OK, so, I have six lemon thymes,

0:38:550:38:58

which smell amazing and do you know what?

0:38:580:39:01

When Dave or Emily or Hayley step or brush past these,

0:39:010:39:04

they are going to give off a wonderful fragrance.

0:39:040:39:07

I'm sure Danny's got a grand plan, but you know what?

0:39:070:39:09

He's too busy, so I'll make my own plan.

0:39:090:39:11

These Mediterranean herbs grow well in poor soils,

0:39:150:39:18

so they'll survive quite happily planted in this gravel,

0:39:180:39:21

provided they get plenty of sun.

0:39:210:39:23

Danny has just the thing for the chimney pots.

0:39:240:39:26

Lavender.

0:39:260:39:28

It's very important you don't have lavender sitting in water.

0:39:280:39:32

You don't want your lavender being waterlogged,

0:39:320:39:35

otherwise the roots will rot away and it will die.

0:39:350:39:39

So what I'm going to do to assist in that - I'm going to add some grit

0:39:390:39:44

to this compost and that will aid in its drainage.

0:39:440:39:48

And, do you know what? I'm going to mix it in with my hands

0:39:480:39:51

because I love the feel of compost.

0:39:510:39:54

And then...

0:39:560:39:57

And the thing is, I've committed myself,

0:39:590:40:01

cos those pots have got no bottoms,

0:40:010:40:04

so now they're in position and the compost is going in,

0:40:040:40:07

they can't be moved.

0:40:070:40:08

Now, there's two different types of lavenders here -

0:40:120:40:14

there's the English Lavender and there's a French lavender.

0:40:140:40:18

Now, you don't want to be planting this lavender up north,

0:40:180:40:21

because it's not that hardy.

0:40:210:40:23

The English variety will survive anywhere in this country.

0:40:230:40:26

And planting lavender is very therapeutic.

0:40:280:40:31

I tell you what, this corner of the garden smells amazing.

0:40:310:40:34

So is it better in your view to grow lavender in a pot like we're doing,

0:40:350:40:39

because it is quite choosy about the soil?

0:40:390:40:41

In this case, because we've got clay,

0:40:410:40:45

-and it won't flourish in heavy clay...

-OK.

0:40:450:40:48

..it's best to put it in pots.

0:40:480:40:50

It's now a frantic dash to finish the planting.

0:40:530:40:56

Got to get it all done, quick, quick, quick!

0:40:580:41:00

Primulas in there.

0:41:000:41:02

And there are also some last-minute repairs to the patio.

0:41:040:41:07

How are you doing, Danny?

0:41:070:41:09

How long left now?

0:41:090:41:10

-Ten minutes.

-And just when we think we're nearly there...

0:41:100:41:13

You know that ou haven't swept properly there?

0:41:130:41:16

if I just lift this, will you...

0:41:160:41:17

Did you...?

0:41:200:41:21

SHE LAUGHS

0:41:210:41:23

-Did you do that on purpose?

-No. I thought I was going to lift it...

0:41:230:41:26

-Did you do that...?

-It wasn't me, it wasn't me!

0:41:260:41:29

Do you think it will be all right if I just do that?

0:41:300:41:32

With the day nearly done,

0:41:350:41:36

there's just time for a few finishing touches,

0:41:360:41:39

designed to encourage Dave to make a bit of time to take things easy.

0:41:390:41:43

Thank you, guys.

0:41:430:41:45

Excellente.

0:41:450:41:46

When Danny arrived this morning,

0:41:500:41:52

this was an overgrown and underused family garden

0:41:520:41:55

that completely lacked character.

0:41:550:41:57

But in the last few hours, it's been transformed

0:41:590:42:02

into an alluring and tranquil space,

0:42:020:42:05

filled with swaying grasses and enticing smells

0:42:050:42:08

of thyme and lavender.

0:42:080:42:10

The dirty, cluttered and weedy patio has been cleared and cleaned

0:42:110:42:15

so it's now a relaxing area for Hayley, Dave and baby Emily.

0:42:150:42:19

The dull and dreary lawn has been enhanced

0:42:210:42:23

by creating curvaceous new flower beds

0:42:230:42:25

filled with ribbons of giant feather grasses

0:42:250:42:28

and striking Italian trees.

0:42:280:42:30

The narrow path leading to the shed

0:42:310:42:33

and greenhouse has been widened into a striking hourglass shape

0:42:330:42:37

to make it safe and practical for Dave and Emily,

0:42:370:42:40

and the pine tree alongside the path

0:42:400:42:42

has been revived by raising its crown

0:42:420:42:45

to provide a delightful bed, full of primulas.

0:42:450:42:48

All in all it's a magnificent transformation

0:42:490:42:51

that fulfils Danny's plan to turn it into a relaxing oasis

0:42:510:42:55

for the whole family.

0:42:550:42:57

But now it's time for the grand unveiling.

0:42:570:42:59

What will Hayley think when she sees it for the first time,

0:42:590:43:03

and will she miss that huge trampoline?

0:43:030:43:04

Wow. Look, Emily! Look at your new garden!

0:43:080:43:13

Hi! Look, there's a bed!

0:43:130:43:16

A few changes, ladies.

0:43:160:43:19

The Christmas tree is still standing?

0:43:190:43:21

-Dadda...

-That's your dadda.

0:43:210:43:23

Thank you so much.

0:43:230:43:24

This looks amazing.

0:43:240:43:26

So a few changes down the left-hand side.

0:43:260:43:28

It just looks stunning.

0:43:280:43:30

Is it going to take a lot of work for them to look after?

0:43:300:43:33

No, very, very easy, very simple but in time...

0:43:330:43:35

-Is that what you want to hear?

-I like that.

0:43:350:43:36

..in time that bed will fill out.

0:43:360:43:38

Hayley, what do you think of the path and the tree?

0:43:380:43:40

-Yeah, this looks really good.

-You can walk across it.

0:43:400:43:43

-Shall we go for a walk?

-She's desperate to go, yeah!

0:43:430:43:46

Ready? Good girl.

0:43:460:43:50

Wow. Good girl.

0:43:500:43:53

Look at this.

0:43:550:43:56

This is a family garden.

0:44:020:44:03

The team have revived and boosted it

0:44:030:44:06

and they've given this family a space

0:44:060:44:08

in which they can relax and spend time together.

0:44:080:44:10

Gold medal for Danny and the team, I think.

0:44:110:44:14

And it was gold too for Dave,

0:44:140:44:15

who ran the best T42 200 metres time in the world this year

0:44:150:44:20

at the Invictus Games.
