Would you hand over your front door keys to complete strangers...

0:00:020:00:05

I can't believe what we've done.

0:00:050:00:06

Coo-ee!

0:00:060:00:08

..in exchange for a massive makeover?

0:00:080:00:10

Red sky at night.

0:00:100:00:12

I'm not sure I would.

0:00:120:00:14

Different people have different tastes.

0:00:140:00:17

I'm Celia Sawyer, and I've been an interior designer for a decade.

0:00:170:00:22

In this series, I'll be introducing families at the end

0:00:220:00:25

of their decorating tether...

0:00:250:00:26

We just can't move forward. Everybody's ideas are so different.

0:00:260:00:30

..to interior designers who are desperate to help.

0:00:300:00:32

Yes!

0:00:320:00:33

The plug for the light.

0:00:330:00:35

But these designers are not professionals.

0:00:350:00:38

Let's just hope they like space films, eh?

0:00:380:00:40

In fact, they're complete amateurs.

0:00:400:00:42

They've wrecked that room.

0:00:420:00:43

That is different.

0:00:430:00:45

What have we done?

0:00:450:00:47

They may have passion...

0:00:470:00:48

I know about composition, dude.

0:00:480:00:50

..they might even have vision...

0:00:500:00:51

I like to create a temple of hope.

0:00:510:00:53

Lovely colours, lovely colours, lovely colours.

0:00:530:00:57

..but I'm giving them just five days to do the job.

0:00:570:00:59

You beauty.

0:00:590:01:00

My question is, will it be tears of joy...

0:01:000:01:03

-Wow.

-Wow, look at this.

0:01:030:01:05

Couldn't have wished for anything better.

0:01:050:01:07

..or just plain tears?

0:01:070:01:08

I'm regretting it.

0:01:080:01:10

He's going to hate it.

0:01:100:01:11

Starting a career in interior design isn't easy.

0:01:150:01:17

Mine began by chance when I did up my own place.

0:01:190:01:22

Friends and neighbours saw it and asked me to do theirs too.

0:01:220:01:26

Some might say I got a lucky break.

0:01:260:01:28

But it's what you do with an opportunity like that that spells success.

0:01:280:01:32

It's very important to remember that you have a

0:01:320:01:34

style as an interior designer, but that doesn't mean you just

0:01:340:01:37

stamp your own taste on someone else's home.

0:01:370:01:40

What it means is you have a style

0:01:400:01:41

and you adapt it for your client's needs.

0:01:410:01:45

In this series, I'm giving a break to keen amateurs

0:01:450:01:47

who are at the point I was when my career began.

0:01:470:01:50

Whilst my friends were out in the park playing football,

0:01:500:01:53

I was the one sat indoors watching interior design programmes.

0:01:530:01:56

I'll be testing them to see

0:01:560:01:57

if they have what it takes to become professional...

0:01:570:02:00

I really want to show people what I'm capable of

0:02:000:02:02

and let loose my interior design skills.

0:02:020:02:05

..by hooking them up with families

0:02:050:02:07

so desperate for help they'll try anything.

0:02:070:02:10

But it's not going to be easy, as the home owners

0:02:100:02:12

and designers won't actually meet until it's all done.

0:02:120:02:15

This week I'm in County Durham with two couples

0:02:200:02:22

so stuck in design deadlock, they're prepared to try anything.

0:02:220:02:26

First up is the old steel town of Consett,

0:02:270:02:30

and the terraced house where family of four,

0:02:300:02:32

the Geoghegans, have been living for the past 11 years.

0:02:320:02:35

Lorry driver John is the daddy of the house,

0:02:360:02:39

and he knows exactly what he likes.

0:02:390:02:41

Nothing too dark and nothing gaudy and nothing horrible.

0:02:410:02:44

It's all just lovely, isn't it? Nice and cream.

0:02:440:02:47

-Boring.

-Boring.

0:02:470:02:49

I've got a really good burning passion for creams.

0:02:490:02:53

In fact, even the inside of John's lorry is cream.

0:02:530:02:56

He simply can't get enough of it.

0:02:570:02:59

Cream furnishings, cream walls, cream everywhere with

0:02:590:03:02

a little bit of, you know, brown just to darken things down.

0:03:020:03:05

But wife Rachel is desperate for a chance to express herself.

0:03:070:03:11

There's nothing in our house that sums up me, it's all John's.

0:03:110:03:14

I would like reds, or teals.

0:03:140:03:17

Every morning when I wake up I just feel as if it's a nightmare.

0:03:180:03:22

I just need that mood lifted.

0:03:220:03:24

I think a bit of colour would make our lives happier.

0:03:240:03:28

But it's not just colour that's the problem.

0:03:280:03:30

The kitchen layout doesn't work for their extended family either.

0:03:300:03:33

There has been occasions where people have had to go through

0:03:330:03:36

the back door and go through the passage

0:03:360:03:38

and up the stairs to go to the toilet, to come back down.

0:03:380:03:41

And the kids, if they want to go,

0:03:410:03:42

they've got to sneak underneath the table.

0:03:420:03:45

It's not functional. It doesn't work.

0:03:450:03:47

Things are so bad that John and Rachel have agreed to let two

0:03:470:03:50

amateur designers loose on their home.

0:03:500:03:53

We need somebody to come in and help us

0:03:530:03:56

because we can't work it out between the two of us.

0:03:560:03:59

I think John's terrified of handing over the keys,

0:03:590:04:02

but I'm hoping my cream nightmare is going to be over.

0:04:020:04:05

Well, clearly they need this intervention.

0:04:110:04:13

As John and Rachel won't meet the designers to give them

0:04:130:04:16

the brief, I'd better see the problem for myself.

0:04:160:04:19

-Hello, there.

-Hello, you must be John.

0:04:230:04:25

I am.

0:04:250:04:26

-Nice to meet you.

-You too.

0:04:260:04:28

And where better to start than the couple's cream bedroom.

0:04:280:04:31

Oh, OK.

0:04:310:04:33

Just observing how beautifully painted this is(!)

0:04:330:04:38

Bit of a bodger, are you, John?

0:04:380:04:39

Yeah, John the Bodger.

0:04:390:04:41

LAUGHTER

0:04:410:04:42

Looks like John needs a spell in finishing school.

0:04:420:04:45

Rachel, you can't feel that this is

0:04:450:04:47

a lovely romantic environment, surely?

0:04:470:04:50

If we go too dark, it's...

0:04:500:04:52

Sounds like you're trying to get your own way, doesn't he?

0:04:520:04:55

It does. It's horrible, it's just like a box.

0:04:550:04:57

A cream box.

0:04:570:04:58

And you like this, do you, John?

0:04:580:05:00

You don't want any colour at all?

0:05:000:05:01

No.

0:05:010:05:02

Well, this is it, the big moment.

0:05:040:05:06

Time for you to leave us.

0:05:060:05:08

Hand over your keys. Come on!

0:05:080:05:11

See you in a few days.

0:05:130:05:14

-Bye.

-Bye-bye!

0:05:140:05:15

The Geoghegans will be back in two days to give me

0:05:150:05:17

feedback on the first two rooms.

0:05:170:05:20

Bye-bye, house of cream.

0:05:200:05:22

I don't know what I've let myself in for here.

0:05:230:05:26

John, oh...

0:05:260:05:27

It's this, all the time, over Rachel.

0:05:270:05:30

And I think it's about time Rachel had her voice heard.

0:05:300:05:33

They know that a total of three rooms will be transformed in

0:05:330:05:36

their home, but up until now,

0:05:360:05:38

they've had no idea who'll be doing them.

0:05:380:05:40

First up, I'm bringing in a

0:05:440:05:45

42-year-old mother of two from Somerset.

0:05:450:05:48

Here we go.

0:05:480:05:49

Hi, I'm Leila. I love colour.

0:05:490:05:52

I'd hate to live in a world of black and white,

0:05:520:05:54

it would be so boring.

0:05:540:05:56

I feel like I was born in a rainbow.

0:05:560:05:57

It's something about colour and pattern that makes me feel alive.

0:05:570:06:01

Interior design is something I really want to do.

0:06:010:06:04

I love the way it makes me feel and the creativity that I can have.

0:06:040:06:07

There is no way that I'm going to play it safe with your home.

0:06:070:06:10

I'm going to add a lot of colour and patterns.

0:06:100:06:12

You've been playing it safe for too long. You are so lucky.

0:06:120:06:16

Eh?!

0:06:160:06:17

That's your nightmare, your proper nightmare.

0:06:170:06:20

Aye. See who pops up next, because

0:06:200:06:22

I tell you what, it can't be any worse.

0:06:220:06:26

Next in is a 38-year-old venture capitalist

0:06:270:06:29

who puts the "prima" in prima donna.

0:06:290:06:32

Hi, I'm Nic, from Milan, Italy,

0:06:320:06:34

the capital of design, creativity and style.

0:06:340:06:36

So, don't worry, you are in safe hands.

0:06:360:06:39

But we don't live in Italy. We live in Consett.

0:06:390:06:41

# This is a man's world... #

0:06:410:06:43

I'm really excited about getting the opportunity

0:06:450:06:47

to transform someone's place.

0:06:470:06:49

I think it's a gift of my experience, it's my style,

0:06:490:06:52

it's a bit of my life that I'm giving to you.

0:06:520:06:54

I would describe my style as contemporary, cosy, cool.

0:06:540:06:59

I am Italian, and that brings a lot of passion,

0:06:590:07:01

a lot of creativity, but also I think I've mixed Italian style

0:07:010:07:04

with lots of the countries I've lived in.

0:07:040:07:06

He can do all of the house.

0:07:060:07:08

Cos that is lush.

0:07:080:07:10

Our life's boring at the minute and needs livened up.

0:07:100:07:13

And you will like it. You will.

0:07:130:07:16

It's a design taste-off.

0:07:180:07:20

Neutral tones versus vibrant colour.

0:07:200:07:23

Remind you of anyone?

0:07:230:07:24

Each designer has seen a floor plan in advance.

0:07:250:07:29

Nic's got £3,500 for the lounge

0:07:290:07:32

and Leila has the same in the bedroom.

0:07:320:07:35

But this is the first time they've actually stood in the space

0:07:350:07:38

they're transforming.

0:07:380:07:40

Wow.

0:07:400:07:41

Yeah, not exactly like my place.

0:07:420:07:44

Probably in a bit of a bad way on the walls and the cracks.

0:07:440:07:48

The pictures on the floor.

0:07:480:07:49

I mean, that looks like a graveyard.

0:07:490:07:52

Yes, needs a little bit of work in here, I think.

0:07:520:07:55

No colour at all.

0:07:550:07:57

It's crying out for help.

0:07:570:07:59

These novice designers have been given some

0:07:590:08:01

information about the home owners and their design dilemmas,

0:08:010:08:04

but I want to make sure they completely understand the brief.

0:08:040:08:08

-Hi.

-Hi.

-Hi, meet Nic.

0:08:080:08:10

-Hi, Nic, nice to meet you.

-Hi, nice to meet you.

0:08:100:08:12

So, Leila, Rachel wants a really romantic feel,

0:08:120:08:14

and actually so does John.

0:08:140:08:16

No kids, so they can close it off and just have their own time there.

0:08:160:08:21

Nic, they want a room that they can all relax in as a family,

0:08:210:08:24

but Rachel wants a wow factor in the room.

0:08:240:08:27

We have cream versus colour here.

0:08:280:08:31

Good luck,

0:08:310:08:32

because you're going to need it.

0:08:320:08:34

As well as working on their individual rooms,

0:08:360:08:38

Leila and Nic will have to combine their very different styles

0:08:380:08:42

and collaborate in the kitchen later in the week.

0:08:420:08:45

Right, this design overhaul needs to begin,

0:08:480:08:51

so I'm sending in builder Russell to help them create their visions.

0:08:510:08:55

His first job is to strip Nic's living room back to basics.

0:08:550:08:59

As you see, we've basically stripped down all of the walls.

0:09:020:09:05

The doors are all going to be changed,

0:09:050:09:07

we're going to make sliding doors.

0:09:070:09:08

The theme for this room, basically, is for it to be a combination

0:09:080:09:12

of a gentleman club, but also a place where kids can stay.

0:09:120:09:16

So it's almost like a family club.

0:09:160:09:18

Rachel wanted a wow factor,

0:09:180:09:20

but I'm not entirely sure this is what she had in mind.

0:09:200:09:23

Upstairs, Leila's planning to cover

0:09:260:09:28

all four walls with wild wallpaper.

0:09:280:09:32

A feature wall maybe, but the whole room?

0:09:320:09:34

My God, it's going to be amazing.

0:09:340:09:37

I'm worried.

0:09:380:09:39

This could feel way too busy.

0:09:390:09:42

This is definitely more Rachel.

0:09:420:09:43

She wanted the colour, John, obviously, is a bit more neutral,

0:09:430:09:46

so he's going to have to really, hopefully, go with this.

0:09:460:09:50

And it is going to be a massive colour explosion in here.

0:09:500:09:53

Massive colour explosion for the man who likes cream?

0:09:530:09:56

May not be the best move for a budding interior designer, Leila.

0:09:560:10:01

Just six miles away,

0:10:020:10:04

in the neighbouring town of Stanley,

0:10:040:10:05

lives a second couple desperate for

0:10:050:10:07

some interiors intervention.

0:10:070:10:10

Newly-wed pensioners, Brian and Eileen Ridley, can't work out

0:10:100:10:13

how to combine her feminine taste with his masculine converted chapel.

0:10:130:10:18

And they want a home that suits them both.

0:10:180:10:21

Well, I bought this place in 1988.

0:10:210:10:23

Probably now, it's in need for a little bit of updating.

0:10:230:10:27

Brian met his second wife, Eileen, two years ago,

0:10:270:10:30

and though she fell in love with him

0:10:300:10:33

she wasn't so keen on his house.

0:10:330:10:36

I lived here a long time with my late wife, and she'd had

0:10:360:10:38

a hand in doing all the furnishings and what have you, you know?

0:10:380:10:42

It was still very much their combined taste rather than mine.

0:10:420:10:47

The decor was, for me, quite heavy and oppressive.

0:10:470:10:50

Victorian hunting lodge, I think, about sums it up.

0:10:500:10:53

I just thought, "I can't really live here."

0:10:530:10:55

All these animal heads staring at me with their dead eyes.

0:10:550:10:59

HOWL

0:10:590:11:01

I would prefer things to be lighter and brighter.

0:11:010:11:05

I'm certainly not a minimalist,

0:11:050:11:06

but I'm not that keen on having all that much to dust.

0:11:060:11:11

As the relative newcomer here,

0:11:110:11:13

Eileen has found it tricky to put her stamp on the place.

0:11:130:11:16

It does feel a bit strange,

0:11:160:11:18

as a second wife, to come

0:11:180:11:19

into somebody else's bedroom

0:11:190:11:21

and try to make it yours.

0:11:210:11:23

Maybe it would just take that designer's eye to make it all

0:11:230:11:27

more reflective of who we are as a couple.

0:11:270:11:29

Yeah.

0:11:290:11:30

Really, at the end of the day,

0:11:300:11:31

it's more about Eileen being happy

0:11:310:11:34

with the home.

0:11:340:11:35

I would just like Brian and I to have something that's ours.

0:11:350:11:38

So that it's almost like the fresh start that we've been

0:11:380:11:41

given as a couple.

0:11:410:11:42

The old is gone, the new has come,

0:11:420:11:44

the best is yet to be.

0:11:440:11:46

Well, change is on its way.

0:11:460:11:48

I'm heading to see Brian and Eileen's issues for myself.

0:11:480:11:51

-Hi!

-Hello.

-Come in.

0:11:550:11:57

Are you going to show me around?

0:11:570:11:58

-Yes, come through.

-Great.

0:11:580:12:00

Let's start in the heart of the home, the kitchen.

0:12:010:12:05

And right away, I can see that the partition

0:12:050:12:07

is something I'd want to change.

0:12:070:12:09

It's a very interesting shape, isn't it?

0:12:100:12:13

When we're entertaining, I've got to peer through the teapots to

0:12:130:12:16

actually talk to people.

0:12:160:12:18

And what would be your worst nightmare in here?

0:12:180:12:20

Some of the kitchens that you see now look more like laboratories...

0:12:200:12:23

-Right.

-..where you would dissect a mouse rather than cook a dinner.

0:12:230:12:26

So, not too contemporary.

0:12:260:12:28

Not too contemporary.

0:12:280:12:29

And this is the bedroom.

0:12:310:12:32

Wow.

0:12:330:12:35

-Interesting.

-LAUGHING:

-Yes.

0:12:350:12:37

Is this your favourite room?

0:12:370:12:39

Not especially, no.

0:12:390:12:40

Not your taste.

0:12:400:12:41

Not my taste.

0:12:410:12:43

It's a nice thick carpet and obviously very good quality,

0:12:430:12:45

but I think this kind of hectic floral pattern may have had its day.

0:12:450:12:50

You could be right there, actually.

0:12:500:12:52

So Brian, Eileen, this is it.

0:12:550:12:58

Time to hand over those keys.

0:12:580:13:00

Come on. Be brave.

0:13:020:13:04

Good luck. See you soon.

0:13:040:13:06

Brian and Eileen have two nail-biting days

0:13:060:13:09

before they see the results.

0:13:090:13:11

Bye, house.

0:13:110:13:12

-Bye, house.

-See you when I get back.

0:13:120:13:15

I think the house could be amazing.

0:13:150:13:17

It needs a lot of love and attention,

0:13:170:13:20

and let's see what we get.

0:13:200:13:22

And who we get.

0:13:220:13:23

It's time to see which amateur designers I'm

0:13:230:13:26

unleashing on their chapel of love.

0:13:260:13:28

First in, a 34-year-old self-proclaimed

0:13:310:13:33

tree hugger from Merseyside.

0:13:330:13:35

Here goes.

0:13:350:13:37

Hi, my name's Sam.

0:13:370:13:39

I'm a tattoo artist, not that you'd ever guess,

0:13:390:13:41

and I can't really think of anybody who's got a style like mine.

0:13:410:13:44

It's somewhere between Victorian, Gothic,

0:13:440:13:47

definitely more Bavarian palace than Buckingham Palace.

0:13:470:13:50

As you can see, behind me

0:13:500:13:51

I have my altar which is jam-packed

0:13:510:13:53

full of very beautiful things, because

0:13:530:13:55

I believe in energy in life,

0:13:550:13:57

and feeling the energy in a building.

0:13:570:14:00

So I can't wait to get into your house

0:14:000:14:01

and see what the building wants to tell me,

0:14:010:14:03

see what secret it's got.

0:14:030:14:05

The fact that you're putting your home in my hands says to me

0:14:050:14:07

that you guys are ready for an adventure

0:14:070:14:09

and I think I'm just the girl to take you on it.

0:14:090:14:12

-Oh, dear.

-Gosh.

0:14:120:14:13

I think I like her as a person.

0:14:130:14:15

I'm not really sure what she's going to do to the house.

0:14:150:14:18

Following in Sam's footsteps is a 53-year-old mum of two from Devon.

0:14:200:14:24

Hi, I'm Shirley, and I'm a fashion lecturer,

0:14:250:14:29

so I do know what I'm doing.

0:14:290:14:31

I know what I want.

0:14:310:14:32

And I'll push for it.

0:14:340:14:35

Most of the time, I get it.

0:14:360:14:38

# One of these days these boots are going to walk all over you... #

0:14:380:14:41

My personality is big,

0:14:430:14:45

so I always strive to go out and put together the things that

0:14:450:14:48

I know are unique, only to me,

0:14:480:14:51

in a very selfish way.

0:14:510:14:54

Mistakes?

0:14:540:14:55

This lady doesn't make mistakes.

0:14:550:14:57

So it's going to be very much her taste and what she wants.

0:15:000:15:02

Is she going to listen to what we want, I wonder?

0:15:020:15:05

Well, I wonder too.

0:15:050:15:07

For the first two days,

0:15:070:15:08

the designers will be working on their individual rooms.

0:15:080:15:12

Shirley's been given the cluttered kitchen and a budget of £8,500.

0:15:120:15:16

Sam's got the old bedroom and 2,500 to transform that.

0:15:160:15:21

Okey dokey.

0:15:230:15:24

A lot of stuff. My gosh! Look at this.

0:15:240:15:29

It's like a giant tub of margarine has exploded in here.

0:15:290:15:33

And that's just like a magic eye picture that's gone wrong.

0:15:330:15:36

It needs bringing up to date.

0:15:360:15:39

It needs a soul.

0:15:390:15:41

A bit scary, aren't they?

0:15:410:15:43

Like an army of advancing wardrobes

0:15:430:15:46

marching across the bedroom towards you.

0:15:460:15:48

As well as working on their own rooms,

0:15:480:15:50

they will be collaborating on the large living room later in the week.

0:15:500:15:54

But for now I want to be sure they understand the brief.

0:15:560:16:00

-Shirley, hi.

-Hi.

-Come and meet Sam.

-Oh.

-Sam, meet Shirley.

0:16:000:16:04

-Nice to meet you. Hi.

-Nice to meet you.

-Good to meet you too.

0:16:040:16:07

So, what do you think of your rooms?

0:16:070:16:09

Oh, overwhelming.

0:16:090:16:12

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:16:120:16:13

-This room has to be made a much more sociable room, OK?

-Yeah.

0:16:130:16:19

Because Eileen's cooking in there,

0:16:190:16:21

-and her friends are in the bottom level...

-Yes.

0:16:210:16:23

-..and she has to lean over to see them and speak to them.

-Yeah.

0:16:230:16:27

So they want it to be a really fun room.

0:16:270:16:29

-A nice room that they can socialise in.

-I understand that.

0:16:290:16:32

-Sam.

-Hi.

0:16:320:16:34

Your brief is that they want a nice relaxing room,

0:16:340:16:38

so you've got to be very careful there not to put too much

0:16:380:16:41

of what you would like in your home in their home.

0:16:410:16:44

So, girls, you've got to get on with it now.

0:16:440:16:47

-This is your big chance, OK?

-Yes, boss.

-We hear that. No pressure.

0:16:470:16:50

Pressure? Well, you know what they say -

0:16:520:16:54

if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,

0:16:540:16:57

which is not so easy if you're supposed to be designing it.

0:16:570:17:00

I'm going to get rid of all of this and create space.

0:17:000:17:04

Dividing wall really cuts the kitchen in half

0:17:040:17:09

and makes it really, really poky.

0:17:090:17:11

That's definitely got to go! That one and that one.

0:17:110:17:14

MUSIC: So Macho by Sinitta

0:17:140:17:16

To help Shirley and Sam achieve their goals,

0:17:160:17:19

I'm giving them builder Nathan.

0:17:190:17:21

Shirley will be happy when everything's empty and clean.

0:17:210:17:25

You've got it. You've got the picture.

0:17:250:17:28

I'm a little bit scared of Shirley, as well,

0:17:280:17:29

so I'm just doing what I'm told so I stay out of trouble.

0:17:290:17:32

In the master bedroom, the margarine wardrobes are hitting the skip

0:17:320:17:35

as budding designer Sam branches out.

0:17:350:17:39

So my big idea for the bed, and it is quite a big idea,

0:17:390:17:43

I really want to make a four poster bed,

0:17:430:17:45

-but the four posts are going to be trees.

-Trees?

0:17:450:17:48

Yeah, I think it's just going to feel very boudoir-ish

0:17:480:17:51

and very special to them.

0:17:510:17:52

I hope so. That's the vibe.

0:17:520:17:55

Either that or Liberace has exploded in here.

0:17:550:17:58

Sam's also committing an interior design crime -

0:17:580:18:01

painting over wallpaper. Risky if it's this old.

0:18:010:18:04

For the theme for this room, I really like that feel of, like,

0:18:040:18:07

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

0:18:070:18:09

Bringing that touch of Narnia,

0:18:090:18:11

so that you've got that kind of slightly fantastical feel.

0:18:110:18:15

I can't say that's a design inspiration I've ever used.

0:18:150:18:19

The purple paint is on.

0:18:190:18:21

Yeah, it's all gone really well,

0:18:210:18:24

which is a bit scary.

0:18:240:18:26

Yes, it is.

Six miles away in Consett, Leila may have put John's dislike of colour

0:18:300:18:34

out of her mind, but John certainly can't put Leila out of his.

0:18:340:18:38

He's filling his nan and mum in on his worries.

0:18:380:18:41

She looks perfectly normal,

0:18:410:18:43

but her tastes suggest that she's come down from a different planet.

0:18:430:18:48

But that's her ideas, you see, John.

0:18:480:18:51

Different people have different tastes in everything.

0:18:510:18:55

She is different. That's the thing. She's different to everybody else.

0:18:550:18:59

Oh, John.

0:18:590:19:00

I think Leila's the best one to have, because she's got colour.

0:19:000:19:04

You've got to give the girl a chance.

0:19:040:19:06

There's more colours going to go into that house

0:19:060:19:08

than what's on a snooker table, I can tell you that.

0:19:080:19:11

Well, it just might be nice now. Just hold on.

0:19:110:19:14

I do hope Nan's right.

0:19:140:19:16

I really do.

At the house, it appears John's worst fears are coming true.

0:19:220:19:26

Leila has stamped her colourful taste onto the walls.

0:19:260:19:30

Downstairs, Nic is struggling to decide between 50 shades of grey.

0:19:310:19:36

Nic's proving to be a proper Italian prima donna.

0:19:360:19:39

He's taking ages to pick paint

0:19:390:19:41

and see what it looks like when it's dry,

0:19:410:19:43

and we're on a very tight schedule.

0:19:430:19:44

I just can't see his room being done in time.

0:19:440:19:47

He needs to hurry up and make a decision,

0:19:470:19:49

as I'm back tomorrow and that room needs to be good.

0:19:490:19:52

It's a new day in County Durham,

0:19:580:20:00

and, at the chapel, things aren't going too well

0:20:000:20:02

for tattoo artist Sam.

0:20:020:20:04

The moisture in paint has a habit of unsticking old wallpaper.

0:20:050:20:09

Oh.

0:20:090:20:10

She should have stripped.

0:20:110:20:13

God, that's not ideal, is it?

0:20:130:20:16

Oh, that's just completely coming off.

0:20:160:20:18

Good news is - paint looks nice.

0:20:180:20:20

Bad news is - it's now falling off the wall.

0:20:200:20:24

Win some, lose some.

Blissfully unaware of the chaos in their home,

0:20:390:20:42

Brian and Eileen are having drinks with friends.

0:20:420:20:45

They probably need it after taking such a huge risk.

0:20:450:20:49

I think it's really interesting to invite somebody in,

0:20:490:20:52

to actually remodel everything.

0:20:520:20:54

We've handed over the keys.

0:20:540:20:56

Our home is in their hands

0:20:560:20:57

so they can go into any room and do pretty much what they choose.

0:20:570:21:02

I think it's exciting. I wouldn't because...

0:21:020:21:06

-Because I wouldn't let him!

-I knew that was coming!

0:21:060:21:10

-Whose idea was this in the first place?

-Yeah! Whose?

0:21:100:21:13

I'm quite excited to go back to see which rooms they've done,

0:21:160:21:20

but I'm also going to have a bit of a sleepless night,

0:21:200:21:22

worrying about what they've done to those rooms, I must admit.

0:21:220:21:26

I mean, to be honest, are you just putting on a brave face or...?

0:21:260:21:31

A little bit, maybe.

0:21:310:21:34

What have we done?

0:21:340:21:35

What, indeed!

0:21:360:21:38

In Stanley, the flowers are blooming, the rivers are running

0:21:440:21:48

and the trees...

0:21:480:21:49

Well, they look like they've been chopped down for Sam.

0:21:490:21:53

All righty.

0:21:530:21:55

It's a tree.

0:21:550:21:56

You know what? That's not bad.

0:21:570:21:59

-I have five of these.

-Good, good.

0:21:590:22:02

The more trees the better. Let's go! Let's do it!

0:22:020:22:06

Inside, the flowery carpet's coming out at last

0:22:060:22:11

and Shirley's on a roll.

0:22:110:22:13

Yes! At last!

0:22:130:22:16

She's ordered London print wallpaper

0:22:160:22:18

to help bring the chapel kitchen into the 21st century.

0:22:180:22:22

I clearly remember Eileen saying she didn't want contemporary.

0:22:220:22:26

Back at the Geoghegans, Leila's rainbow room is taking shape.

0:22:290:22:34

They're my babies. My babies!

0:22:340:22:37

Bedrooms should be relaxing places to unwind.

0:22:370:22:40

Leila's design is worrying me.

0:22:400:22:42

John is my concern about most of this room.

0:22:430:22:46

I'm hoping that he's going to come round to a bit of colour

0:22:460:22:50

because he hasn't really got a lot of choice.

0:22:500:22:52

Love the colour!

Downstairs, Nic's finally whittled it down to just one shade of grey.

0:23:020:23:06

Oh, my God.

0:23:060:23:07

That is very brave.

0:23:070:23:10

I like the colour.

0:23:100:23:11

I'm just not sure about the ceiling.

0:23:110:23:14

If Leila loves rainbows but Nic only likes grey,

0:23:140:23:17

how on earth are they going to work together on a joint room?

0:23:170:23:21

I am a bit nervous, actually, about doing a design with him.

0:23:210:23:24

To be honest with you,

0:23:240:23:25

I'm actually not looking forward to it at the moment.

0:23:250:23:29

Over at the chapel and it's all hands on deck.

0:23:290:23:33

I've got one hour to Celia coming back

0:23:330:23:36

and I've never done grouting before.

0:23:360:23:39

Next door, the tree bed's having a spot of last minute surgery

0:23:390:23:43

before its big unveiling.

0:23:430:23:45

There we go.

0:23:450:23:46

I'm all for the design trend of bringing the outside in,

0:23:460:23:49

but this is bonkers.

0:23:490:23:52

Ah! No! Ah, no! I like that.

0:23:520:23:55

It's time for Sam and Shirley

0:23:570:23:58

to down tools and make themselves scarce.

0:23:580:24:01

Brian and Eileen will be back soon

0:24:020:24:04

and I need to see the rooms for myself.

0:24:040:24:06

Before, the bedroom didn't reflect its occupants' tastes

0:24:100:24:13

with its highly-patterned carpet,

0:24:130:24:15

cream wallpaper and old-fashioned furniture.

0:24:150:24:18

Now, with a budget of £2,500,

0:24:190:24:23

the bedroom has been transformed with statement purple walls,

0:24:230:24:26

upcycled furniture

0:24:260:24:28

and a feature tree trunk bed.

0:24:280:24:31

Wow.

0:24:320:24:33

The bed's interesting.

0:24:370:24:38

I feel like I'm in a forest.

0:24:400:24:42

I don't like the fact that the tree is over the window.

0:24:450:24:49

This room would have worked much better

0:24:490:24:51

had the bed been on this wall.

0:24:510:24:54

That window is a feature, so we're kind of covering that.

0:24:540:24:58

I mean, it's a bit fantasy land.

0:25:010:25:03

I wouldn't say it's in keeping with the property at all.

0:25:030:25:07

It's a childish room.

0:25:070:25:08

It's something a 12-year-old would absolutely adore,

0:25:080:25:13

but not a mature couple.

0:25:130:25:15

Right, I've seen enough. On to Shirley's kitchen.

0:25:150:25:19

Before, it was divided into two with a partition wall

0:25:210:25:25

and filled with trinkets and traditional furniture.

0:25:250:25:28

With the budget of £8,500,

0:25:310:25:33

the space has been dramatically altered.

0:25:330:25:36

Shirley removed the central wall, replaced the units,

0:25:360:25:39

and hung statement London wallpaper,

0:25:390:25:42

all very contemporary.

0:25:420:25:44

Right, it's very bright.

0:25:480:25:49

I love the fact they've opened the space up. That's a really good job,

0:25:510:25:56

but it feels very cold.

0:25:560:25:59

I hate the wallpaper.

0:25:590:26:01

I mean, at least if you're going to do something like that,

0:26:010:26:03

reflect on where your house is.

0:26:030:26:06

It is not, in any way, shape or form,

0:26:060:26:11

in keeping with the rest of the property,

0:26:110:26:13

and Eileen, specifically, said

0:26:130:26:16

that she didn't want a kitchen like a laboratory,

0:26:160:26:20

and, to me, apart from a few test tubes missing,

0:26:200:26:24

there's not much difference.

0:26:240:26:26

And Brian and Eileen are getting closer.

0:26:280:26:31

It's about sympathy for the period of the property

0:26:310:26:34

and for the history of the property,

0:26:340:26:36

and I think we both feel very protective about that.

0:26:360:26:41

I don't think they're going to like it. I really, really don't.

0:26:410:26:44

I really don't. Oh, my goodness.

0:26:440:26:46

It's the moment of truth.

0:26:480:26:49

Welcome back, Brian and Eileen.

0:26:490:26:52

I think I'll show them Sam's bedroom first.

0:26:520:26:56

-Open your eyes.

-I daren't!

0:26:560:26:58

SHE GASPS

0:26:590:27:01

-Wow!

-Oh, my goodness.

0:27:030:27:06

Gosh.

0:27:060:27:07

Love the bed.

0:27:160:27:18

Yeah.

0:27:180:27:19

-Wow.

-Just the trees are...

0:27:210:27:24

The dogs are going to love that.

0:27:240:27:25

We're going to have to keep them out.

0:27:250:27:27

-Gosh.

-Wow, I love the wardrobe.

0:27:290:27:32

Yeah, yeah, that's beautiful.

0:27:320:27:34

Oh, the carpet's lovely.

0:27:340:27:36

That's gorgeous. Yeah.

0:27:360:27:37

-Because it was quite a busy carpet before.

-It was very busy.

0:27:370:27:40

-Very busy, yes.

-Yeah, there was too much going on.

0:27:400:27:42

-And I think this is our old furniture.

-It is.

0:27:420:27:45

-What a brilliant idea.

-Wow.

-That's good.

0:27:450:27:47

I'm really pleased you like it.

0:27:470:27:49

I wouldn't have chosen dark purple, although I did in my teens.

0:27:490:27:53

I see you as quite a colourful lady.

0:27:530:27:55

Yeah. It works, though. It's good.

0:27:550:27:58

Well, I'm really pleased, but you haven't seen the other room yet.

0:27:580:28:01

-I know, we've got one more room to go.

-So that's next.

0:28:010:28:04

Fingers firmly crossed.

0:28:040:28:06

Now open your eyes!

0:28:070:28:09

SHE GASPS

0:28:090:28:11

-Whoa!

-Wow!

0:28:110:28:14

-Oh, my lord!

-It's bright!

0:28:140:28:16

-Are we in the right house?

-Are we in the same house?

0:28:220:28:25

I don't think we are. I didn't think this space was this big.

0:28:250:28:30

-What do you think?

-It is so different to the bedroom...

0:28:300:28:33

..but it's absolutely fabulous.

0:28:360:28:39

-And the walls! I love the wallpaper.

-The wallpaper, yeah.

-Yeah.

0:28:390:28:43

We have a London kitchen in our Geordie house!

0:28:430:28:47

Man, this is just phenomenal! I love it.

0:28:470:28:50

You did mention that you didn't want a white kitchen

0:28:500:28:52

that looked quite sort of sterile and like a laboratory.

0:28:520:28:55

But it works. It's amazing and I absolutely love it.

0:28:550:28:59

Honestly, I'm going to cry.

0:28:590:29:01

Fabulous. Fabulous.

0:29:010:29:03

I was so shocked when they came in

0:29:030:29:06

and said, "We love it!"

0:29:060:29:09

How did that happen?

0:29:090:29:11

-I think they've really excelled themselves.

-Oh, definitely.

0:29:110:29:13

-Definitely.

-Really excelled themselves.

0:29:130:29:15

Before the amateur designers move on to the joint room,

0:29:150:29:18

they need to get the all-important client feedback.

0:29:180:29:22

-Hello, girls.

-Hello.

-Hi.

0:29:220:29:23

-Welcome back.

-Thank you.

0:29:230:29:26

Let's start with you, Shirley.

0:29:260:29:28

Explain to me the London wallpaper.

0:29:280:29:31

Why London when we're in County Durham?

0:29:310:29:35

I just loved it. It felt right

0:29:350:29:37

and that's enough for me.

0:29:370:29:39

-But you know what, Shirley?

-Yes.

0:29:420:29:45

-You're very lucky this time, because they love it.

-Yes!

0:29:450:29:49

-Sorry.

-So, well done.

-Oh, my God!

0:29:490:29:53

-Sam.

-Hi.

0:29:560:29:58

-We've got a very purple room.

-I know.

0:30:000:30:02

And the bed...!

0:30:020:30:04

I have to say, though...

0:30:040:30:06

-they loved it.

-Oh, God!

0:30:060:30:09

-They loved it again!

-OK.

0:30:090:30:12

Now, the question is, of course,

0:30:120:30:14

we have the most important room of the house to do next,

0:30:140:30:18

how are you two going to work together? And do you think,

0:30:180:30:22

how are we going to put these two very different styles into one room?

0:30:220:30:26

They want a room they can relax in.

0:30:260:30:28

-So I wish you the best of luck.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:30:280:30:31

You've got two days.

0:30:310:30:33

Two days?!

0:30:330:30:34

I'm giving them a budget of £4,000 to design this amazing space.

0:30:360:30:40

But as they've both got their individual designs right,

0:30:400:30:44

I worry that they may struggle when it comes to compromising now.

0:30:440:30:48

Back in Consett, Nic and Leila

0:30:510:30:54

are running out of time on their individual rooms.

0:30:540:30:57

We've got about 22 seconds left.

0:30:580:31:00

Slightly higher. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

0:31:040:31:07

I'd better take a good look at what they've done before I show

0:31:070:31:10

the clients, John and Rachel.

0:31:100:31:12

For the past 12 years,

0:31:140:31:16

the living room's been catering to John's taste - cream.

0:31:160:31:20

Nic used his £3,500 budget to transform the space, stripping the

0:31:200:31:26

plaster to expose the brick, adding grey to the walls and ceiling,

0:31:260:31:31

and accessorising with a mixture of leather and soft furnishings.

0:31:310:31:35

I can see who Nic's trying to please.

0:31:350:31:38

It's very manly.

0:31:380:31:41

Gosh! Oh, that's awful!

0:31:410:31:44

-LAUGHS:

-What is that?!

0:31:440:31:47

God, it's dreadful!

0:31:470:31:49

I don't feel it's a family environment at all.

0:31:490:31:52

It's definitely a bachelor pad.

0:31:520:31:54

I'm not saying I hate it, though, because I don't.

0:31:540:31:57

-I think we'll be surprised with what we're going to see.

-I think we'll be in for a shock.

0:31:570:32:00

They wanted wow factor, relaxing family room...

0:32:000:32:04

The only wow factor, I would say, in here is, "Wow, isn't it dark?"

0:32:040:32:09

-There's going to be no cream.

-No.

0:32:090:32:11

Fingers crossed, no cream.

0:32:110:32:12

We've been waiting for colour in the house for years.

0:32:120:32:15

I'm just going to see if I can watch TV.

0:32:150:32:17

No. I'm all right here, but I have got to sit like this.

0:32:190:32:23

Fireplace is all right. It's done well.

0:32:250:32:28

It'll be very interesting to see what they think.

0:32:280:32:31

I'm genuinely, genuinely concerned about the room that Leila's done.

0:32:310:32:36

I know the feeling.

0:32:360:32:37

Whoa!

0:32:400:32:42

The bedroom used to be home to poorly painted pale walls

0:32:420:32:45

and uninspired furniture.

0:32:450:32:47

With a budget of £3,500, John the bodger's cream bedroom

0:32:470:32:52

has been transformed into a riot of bright

0:32:520:32:54

and vibrant clashing colours and statement furniture.

0:32:540:32:59

I think this is quite nicely done.

0:33:000:33:02

I think the colour here is good.

0:33:020:33:04

I don't think it needed the wallpaper as well.

0:33:040:33:08

You've got to remember, in a room,

0:33:080:33:10

if your walls are foreground or background.

0:33:100:33:13

And if you're going to put artwork on, which she has,

0:33:130:33:16

it's fighting with the background.

0:33:160:33:18

SHE SIGHS

0:33:190:33:20

How do you sleep in this chaos?

0:33:200:33:22

I feel like I'm in a kind of tacky hotel where, you know,

0:33:220:33:26

these should be flashing.

0:33:260:33:28

He's going to hate it.

0:33:300:33:31

I'm dreading this. I really am.

0:33:330:33:35

-Hello there.

-Hello.

0:33:390:33:40

Welcome back to your home. How are you feeling?

0:33:400:33:43

Nervous.

0:33:430:33:45

Nic's living room first, I think.

0:33:460:33:48

Open your eyes.

0:33:490:33:51

Don't want to!

0:33:510:33:52

Oh, my God!

0:33:530:33:55

It's totally different.

0:33:570:33:58

It is.

0:33:580:34:00

And...this is really, really nice.

0:34:000:34:02

-Really?

-Really nice.

0:34:020:34:04

Yes, I really do like it. It's very nice.

0:34:040:34:06

What do you think, Rachel?

0:34:060:34:07

I really like it. I really do.

0:34:070:34:09

Totally changed.

0:34:090:34:11

It's absolutely superb.

0:34:110:34:14

-Enough colour for you, Rachel?

-It is.

0:34:140:34:16

I wouldn't have chosen this colour, but it looks...looks really nice.

0:34:160:34:20

Space here as well. It's got sliding doors.

0:34:200:34:24

So, considering you only like light colours...

0:34:240:34:28

Yeah, it is kind of light, though, isn't it? It's not exactly...

0:34:280:34:31

-Light? Hmm...

-..tutti-fruttis and a bag of sweets.

0:34:310:34:34

Let's hope that you like the next room as much.

0:34:340:34:38

Miracles do happen.

0:34:380:34:39

What do you think, Rachel?

0:34:450:34:47

You've got your colour.

0:34:490:34:50

Mm-hm. Yeah, I do. I like the wardrobes and...

0:34:500:34:53

No, it's too much.

0:34:530:34:55

For me, it's too busy.

0:34:550:34:58

I wouldn't have done anything like it and I don't like it.

0:34:580:35:01

Supposed to be able to go to sleep in a bedroom,

0:35:010:35:03

and it's like a kids' play area.

0:35:030:35:05

I think it looks horrendous.

0:35:050:35:06

It doesn't look anything like a bedroom.

0:35:060:35:09

So, sorry, but it's a big thumbs-down from me. It's hideous.

0:35:090:35:14

I think it's even too much for Rachel,

0:35:140:35:16

if she was to tell the truth.

0:35:160:35:17

Is it, Rachel?

0:35:170:35:19

I like... I do like the bed and the wardrobes.

0:35:190:35:21

I like the...theme of it.

0:35:210:35:24

-So, overall, you quite like it?

-Mm-hm, yeah.

0:35:240:35:27

-It's rank. Don't like it at all.

-I like the lights.

0:35:270:35:30

Definitely not.

0:35:300:35:31

I think Rachel likes it, though, John.

0:35:310:35:34

I know you're telling her she doesn't, but I think she does.

0:35:340:35:36

No, I'll leave it to her. Rachel's...

0:35:360:35:39

-But you're answering for her.

-Yeah.

0:35:390:35:41

I haven't heard much out of Rachel's mouth, actually. Come on, Rachel.

0:35:410:35:44

I think it'll grow on us. I like... I do like the bed and the wardrobes.

0:35:440:35:47

I did ask for colour.

0:35:470:35:49

If Rachel likes it, yeah, so be it.

0:35:490:35:51

And so if Rachel likes it, can you keep it the same?

0:35:510:35:55

Not for long.

0:35:550:35:56

So you were going to accept what Rachel wanted

0:35:560:36:00

and you said if she's happy, that's fine.

0:36:000:36:02

So what you're actually saying now is it isn't fine?

0:36:020:36:05

-It's rank. Horrible.

-I like it.

0:36:050:36:06

I think she's got to be heard.

0:36:060:36:08

No, sorry. It's not for me.

0:36:080:36:12

So what message would you have for the designer?

0:36:120:36:15

Don't touch the other room.

0:36:150:36:16

Right.

0:36:180:36:19

We took a chance when we handed the keys over.

0:36:210:36:25

And she's done colour, what I asked for. Might grow on you.

0:36:250:36:29

Fungus grows. That's horrible.

0:36:290:36:31

'This is feedback Nic and Leila need to hear.'

0:36:330:36:35

-Hello.

-Hi.

-Hello.

0:36:350:36:38

-How are you feeling?

-Erm...OK.

0:36:380:36:41

-Confident.

-And Nic?

0:36:410:36:43

Yeah, very curious.

0:36:430:36:45

Do you think that what you did was quite brave?

0:36:450:36:48

-It was quite brave, yes.

-OK.

0:36:480:36:50

Good news for you, because they loved it.

0:36:530:36:55

So you've done a good job there.

0:36:560:36:58

-Good, good. Wow!

-Well done.

0:36:580:37:01

-So, Leila...

-Yes.

0:37:010:37:02

-Now, you obviously listened to Rachel.

-Yes.

0:37:020:37:05

She said, "I want colour."

0:37:050:37:07

-John's the one I'm worried about.

-Yeah.

0:37:070:37:10

John should be the one you're worried about.

0:37:120:37:15

Now, Rachel, she liked it.

0:37:150:37:18

Right.

0:37:180:37:19

-John, I'm afraid, hated it.

-Oh, no!

0:37:190:37:23

I'm afraid he didn't like it.

0:37:230:37:25

Rachel got heard by you, OK?

0:37:280:37:34

He was my challenge.

0:37:340:37:35

You knew what you were doing when you stuck the bright colours up there, didn't you?

0:37:350:37:39

I knew what I was doing and I am... I am sticking by it. I love it.

0:37:390:37:42

-It's just that he hates it.

-Yeah. Yeah.

0:37:430:37:46

He'll probably have his roller out later, painting it cream!

0:37:460:37:49

Now you've both got to work together on this room, the kitchen.

0:37:510:37:56

Now, they have a large family, they want to sit round

0:37:560:38:00

and eat at the table.

0:38:000:38:01

-So we have to make this something that works for them.

-Yes.

0:38:010:38:06

Although you've both got very different styles, we've got

0:38:060:38:08

to find a way to gel them together so that you work as a team.

0:38:080:38:13

-OK.

-And you've got two days.

0:38:130:38:15

-LEILA GASPS

-OK.

0:38:150:38:18

This part of the challenge is to see if they can collaborate,

0:38:180:38:21

as professionals often have to work as a team.

0:38:210:38:24

To impress me, they'll have to take on board the feedback

0:38:240:38:26

and hold their nerve,

0:38:260:38:29

and use their £8,000 budget wisely.

0:38:290:38:32

I had a bit of an emotional time last night.

0:38:360:38:38

There's a lot of tension, a lot of stress going on at the moment.

0:38:380:38:41

Emotions are running really high.

0:38:410:38:44

# I see your true colours shining through

0:38:440:38:48

# I see your true colours... #

0:38:480:38:50

My challenge to myself was to get John to like colour,

0:38:500:38:53

and I failed miserably with it.

0:38:530:38:56

# Like a rainbow. #

0:38:560:38:59

Obviously, Leila's got very strong taste.

0:38:590:39:03

She obviously likes to clash things.

0:39:030:39:06

The person to please was probably more John,

0:39:060:39:09

and I think Leila did 99% Rachel and 1% John.

0:39:090:39:12

So I think for the kitchen, we need to compromise.

0:39:120:39:16

But for these two, compromise may not come easy.

0:39:160:39:19

They both have clear but different visions for their joint room.

0:39:190:39:22

I thought for the kitchen... I'm really passionate about this floor.

0:39:220:39:26

-Mm-hm.

-Wall lights, I have these amazing rhinos.

0:39:260:39:31

This is a real gem. It's like a... But I think they can all match.

0:39:330:39:37

Yeah, I-I love it, but I have equally as mad wallpaper.

0:39:370:39:40

OK. Well, you know that they don't like that?

0:39:400:39:43

-Here's some tiles that I also have.

-What, for the floor?

0:39:470:39:50

For the wall. Kind of like blue-turquoise.

0:39:500:39:53

Cos I've gone with clear glass all the way round.

0:39:530:39:57

We need to compromise on what we're going to do.

0:39:570:40:00

We need to share a vision, this is just reductive.

0:40:000:40:02

-I've had enough of you, actually!

-HE CHUCKLES

0:40:020:40:05

All right? I've had absolutely enough of you sighing, huffing and puffing. I'm doing this as well.

0:40:050:40:10

'I have no idea what happened.'

0:40:100:40:11

She's... I think she's overreacted a little bit.

0:40:110:40:14

Ohhh!

0:40:140:40:16

You're just a right control freak!

0:40:160:40:19

I think she's taking it a bit too personal, to be honest.

0:40:190:40:22

She needs to face the fact that she can't just put bright stuff

0:40:220:40:25

in their face, cos they're not going to like it.

0:40:250:40:28

Oh, dear.

0:40:290:40:30

And it's not just Nic and Leila who aren't seeing eye to eye.

0:40:300:40:33

At the chapel, Shirley and Sam

0:40:330:40:35

are at odds over what to use to replace the old chandeliers.

0:40:350:40:39

I've got...two white, two reds.

0:40:390:40:43

Shirley's gone contemporary again.

0:40:430:40:45

And Sam seems have come over all Moroccan.

0:40:450:40:48

O...K!

0:40:480:40:50

-Oh, dear.

-Well, I wanted to go big.

0:40:500:40:52

OK, OK, OK, OK...

0:40:520:40:55

OK!

0:40:550:40:57

In Consett, Leila's calling for peace talks.

0:40:570:41:00

At the moment, we're not... Had a bit of a blow out,

0:41:020:41:05

but we've got to get this job done, yeah?

0:41:050:41:07

-Yeah.

-Got to work together with this.

-Yeah.

-OK, that's fine.

0:41:070:41:11

-I do want to work with you.

-And I want to work with you, and I want us to make an amazing kitchen.

-Yes.

0:41:110:41:16

A look from Shirley is all it takes to get Sam to see things her way.

0:41:160:41:20

I prefer yours. That's really depressing.

0:41:200:41:24

-OK, right. What about this one? I'm using that wallpaper...

-Yeah.

0:41:240:41:29

-..you can have your lights.

-Er...

0:41:290:41:31

I brought these along because I thought we might need them.

0:41:330:41:35

It's like a little hug from the universe.

0:41:350:41:37

Whenever you feel a bit "ugggh", just take that out of your pocket, give it a little rub.

0:41:370:41:41

Come here, it's all good. It's all going to be all right.

0:41:410:41:44

That's what that is.

0:41:440:41:46

They're big, painted, burgundy wall cabinets with arches.

0:41:470:41:53

Burgundy?

0:41:530:41:55

Can we repaint?

0:41:550:41:56

Halfway though Brian and Eileen's living room refurb,

0:42:020:42:05

and Shirley's lights are going up.

0:42:050:42:08

It's just right, just the right position.

0:42:080:42:10

Shirley's artwork is being framed.

0:42:100:42:12

-What do you think?

-Perfect.

-All righty.

0:42:120:42:14

Shirley's cushions are in position.

0:42:140:42:17

Do you own every pillow that's ever been made?

0:42:170:42:19

And wouldn't you know it?

0:42:190:42:21

Shirley's contemporary sofas have got the go-ahead too.

0:42:210:42:24

Sam's seriously in danger of over-compromising.

0:42:240:42:27

No, we've not gone with my sofa.

0:42:270:42:29

I saw Shirley's and it's huge, it's got a great scale.

0:42:290:42:33

So inspiring working with someone like Shirley.

0:42:330:42:35

Surely something of Sam's can squeeze into the design

0:42:350:42:38

of this super-sized sitting room?

0:42:380:42:40

-It's beautiful.

-It's what?

0:42:400:42:42

-Look at the petroleum colours in there.

-It's what?

-It's beautiful.

0:42:420:42:47

-Now...

-Do you know, I can't even force myself. No way.

0:42:490:42:53

There's no way I like them, and they certainly don't fit into this

0:42:530:42:56

vision that's going on in here whatsoever.

0:42:560:42:59

-Coin toss?

-Sam, heads, Shirley, tails.

0:42:590:43:02

Whatever!

0:43:020:43:03

-Ohhh!

-YE-E-ES! Right!

0:43:050:43:07

Even the coin has let you get your own way.

0:43:100:43:13

Ohhhhh!

0:43:130:43:14

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that!

0:43:140:43:18

We are, Shirley.

0:43:180:43:19

In Consett, the clock is ticking before John and Rachel arrive home.

0:43:200:43:24

Nic's hard at work in the garden, and worryingly,

0:43:240:43:28

Leila's injecting some colour into the kitchen.

0:43:280:43:30

Wow, that is amazing. He's going to really like this, John.

0:43:300:43:36

-You think?

-Absolutely not!

0:43:360:43:38

I am quite nervous to meet John,

0:43:390:43:42

purely because he absolutely hated my bedroom.

0:43:420:43:45

Celia's warned the guys about not being too colourful in the kitchen,

0:43:450:43:48

yet we've got really crazy colourful wallpaper and pink walls.

0:43:480:43:53

Bit concerned what Celia's going to think about that one.

0:43:530:43:56

At least someone's listened to me.

0:43:560:43:58

But quite frankly I'm the least of their worries.

0:43:580:44:01

John Geoghegan's regretting ever climbing on board this

0:44:010:44:04

makeover merry-go-round.

0:44:040:44:06

Come on, John, cheer up, son.

0:44:060:44:08

No! The house is a mess.

0:44:080:44:10

It's maybe Your Home in Their Hands.

0:44:100:44:12

It'll be my home in my hands as soon as they go.

0:44:120:44:14

Because they haven't listened to a word we asked for.

0:44:140:44:17

The wallpaper that Leila's put on will be the most expensive

0:44:170:44:20

backing paper that anybody's put on any house,

0:44:200:44:23

cos that'll be painted next week.

0:44:230:44:25

It's an absolute mess. It's disgusting.

0:44:250:44:28

Rachel asked for a little bit of colour, but there's less

0:44:280:44:31

colour on this fairground ride than what's in the bedroom at the minute.

0:44:310:44:34

And when you ask for something romantic, you don't

0:44:340:44:36

put yellow wallpaper on a wall with blues and greens and birds

0:44:360:44:40

and stuff like that, then put turquoise furniture in front of it.

0:44:400:44:44

-Right.

-And then put lights around your headboard with kiddies'

0:44:440:44:47

figurines on the headboard.

0:44:470:44:48

Two arrows pointing down to it. It's a mess!

0:44:480:44:51

I hope I don't meet the lady, because she'll hate me if I do.

0:44:510:44:55

Maybe the kitchen might be a bit better.

0:44:550:44:57

It can't be any worse, can it?

0:44:570:44:58

I tell you what, kitchens cost a lot of money, and if they get

0:44:580:45:01

that as badly wrong as what they've got the rest of it, God help us.

0:45:010:45:05

It's a mess, and I wouldn't recommend anybody do it.

0:45:050:45:10

Big risk? Yeah, risk too far.

0:45:100:45:11

I'm disgusted in it, and that's the truth. Absolutely disgusted.

0:45:110:45:16

And all the fun of the fair continues back at the house,

0:45:210:45:24

where Nic and Leila are still trapped on their own unmerry-go-round.

0:45:240:45:28

We're just going to have to go...

0:45:280:45:30

Nic, we've got to paint this. It's going to have to go over there.

0:45:300:45:33

You have to start listening and do as you're told for a minute.

0:45:330:45:36

I'd say that Nic and Leila are both very passionate about design.

0:45:360:45:39

-Just stick it over there.

-Leila, shut up!

0:45:390:45:40

No, you shut up and stick it over there!

0:45:400:45:43

But they're a little way off being classed as professional designers.

0:45:430:45:46

-This is not for you to worry.

-Yes, it is for me to worry!

0:45:460:45:48

It's my bench. You've got all the furniture to be done, don't worry about it.

0:45:480:45:51

-But you're not doing anything!

-Don't worry!

0:45:510:45:53

-Any time there's been any stress...

-Are you painting, then?

0:45:530:45:56

..you've had Nic walk off in a hissy

0:45:560:45:59

and Leila panic and get all stressy that nothing's happening.

0:45:590:46:03

I am just speechless, absolutely speechless.

0:46:030:46:06

Don't be difficult. Don't try and be difficult!

0:46:060:46:09

-LEILA STUTTERS

-Don't be difficult.

0:46:090:46:11

I've got Nic being Nic, I've got Celia about to turn up with

0:46:110:46:14

the home owners, that I'm about to meet for the first time.

0:46:140:46:17

So, stress? Yes!

0:46:170:46:18

And she's not the only one under pressure.

0:46:180:46:22

At the chapel, Shirley and Sam are putting the finishing touches

0:46:220:46:26

to their souped-up sitting room.

0:46:260:46:28

Well, Shirley's souped-up sitting room.

0:46:280:46:31

It's difficult to say how much of me is in this room.

0:46:310:46:33

I'll hazard a guess...

0:46:330:46:35

not very much.

0:46:350:46:36

All the main pieces, the rug, the sofa, coffee tables,

0:46:410:46:45

the artwork, it's just Shirley written all over it.

0:46:450:46:48

It's all her pieces. Sam just sort of went with the flow.

0:46:480:46:50

Honestly, quite a lot of the room is Shirley's.

0:46:500:46:53

Her style is flawless, and I would have been an absolute idiot

0:46:530:46:56

if I wasn't going to use her few more

0:46:560:46:58

years of experience on top of mine to just, like, learn

0:46:580:47:01

and kind of almost study underneath this lady. She's so stylish.

0:47:010:47:05

Even though Sam and I have got very different tastes, I can give

0:47:060:47:10

a little, she can give a little, and we can bring something together.

0:47:100:47:14

I'd say one of them brought more than a little.

0:47:140:47:17

But before I decide who's impressed me the most,

0:47:170:47:20

I want to see this room for myself.

0:47:200:47:22

With a budget of £4,000, the sitting room has been

0:47:230:47:27

transformed from dull, dated and dreary to bright, white and airy.

0:47:270:47:32

The deep pile carpet has made way for wood effect lino.

0:47:320:47:36

The sofas have been replaced with contemporary furniture.

0:47:360:47:39

This chapel's been well and truly converted.

0:47:390:47:43

-Hello.

-Hello, Celia.

0:47:480:47:50

Would you say, Shirley,

0:47:570:47:59

that perhaps you've put your stamp on a lot more than Sam?

0:47:590:48:04

Erm, yes.

0:48:040:48:06

She's an endlessly inspiring woman.

0:48:070:48:10

Every time she unpacked a box, I fell in love with something new.

0:48:100:48:12

So I think we've successfully fused an old-fashioned

0:48:120:48:16

and a contemporary style.

0:48:160:48:18

Whose idea was it to put a very light-coloured floor down?

0:48:180:48:23

-Both.

-Yeah.

0:48:230:48:25

The sofas. They've very bold, Shirley.

0:48:250:48:30

And a little bit...

0:48:310:48:34

nasty, actually, aren't they?

0:48:340:48:36

I made my choice. I went for visual more than comfort.

0:48:360:48:39

They wanted somewhere relaxing, and a place to entertain.

0:48:390:48:44

Do I think you've created it?

0:48:450:48:48

No, actually, I don't.

0:48:490:48:52

Really?

0:48:520:48:53

Eileen and Brian are about to come back

0:48:540:48:56

-and see what you've done to their home.

-OK.

0:48:560:49:00

You excited about that?

0:49:000:49:01

Not any more!

0:49:010:49:03

So, come on, let's get you both out of the way.

0:49:040:49:08

And the couple don't seem that excited either.

0:49:120:49:15

-Nervous for the third room.

-Nervous for the third room, yes.

0:49:150:49:18

Let's hope they haven't discarded all our nice antique furniture

0:49:180:49:22

and replaced it with flat-pack.

0:49:220:49:24

That would be dreadful, wouldn't it? That would be dreadful.

0:49:240:49:27

With the girls hiding in the kitchen,

0:49:270:49:29

Brian and Eileen have no idea they're listening in.

0:49:290:49:32

Ooh!

0:49:330:49:35

-SHE GASPS

-Oh, my gosh!

0:49:350:49:38

Welcome home.

0:49:380:49:40

Wow. Wow!

0:49:400:49:42

It is light and bright!

0:49:440:49:46

I feel a bit shaky.

0:49:460:49:48

-We'd never have thought it.

-Oh, my goodness.

0:49:490:49:51

Not keen on the sofas, I'm really not.

0:49:510:49:53

EILEEN LAUGHS

0:49:530:49:55

-I know what you mean on that one.

-Yeah.

0:49:550:49:57

Absolutely love the floor. Love these coffee tables.

0:50:010:50:04

And I like these bright colours.

0:50:040:50:06

So, I mean, it's quite contemporary, isn't it?

0:50:060:50:08

Yes. This really works, this really works for me.

0:50:080:50:11

I absolutely love it.

0:50:110:50:12

So, Brian, Eileen,

0:50:140:50:16

it's time to meet the two designers who had your home in their hands.

0:50:160:50:20

Come on, then, girls.

0:50:200:50:21

BRIAN: Hello.

0:50:220:50:24

SHIRLEY: Hi!

0:50:240:50:25

Hello.

0:50:250:50:27

It's lovely to meet you. Thank you so much.

0:50:270:50:29

BRIAN: Bright and colourful Shirley!

0:50:290:50:31

I'm absolutely delighted that Brian and Eileen loved their home,

0:50:310:50:36

and well done to the designers.

0:50:360:50:37

-LOVED the bedroom.

-Oh, thank goodness!

0:50:370:50:40

Fantastic.

0:50:400:50:41

There's a lot more thought has to go into interior design than

0:50:410:50:44

I first thought.

0:50:440:50:46

But I've had a ball doing it, and I think I'm just going to go home

0:50:460:50:49

and completely redecorate my life now.

0:50:490:50:51

I feel really inspired.

0:50:510:50:53

Sam should really think, though,

0:50:530:50:55

if she wants to go forward with this, that she needs to be heard.

0:50:550:50:59

You've got to be strong in design, you've got to go forward,

0:50:590:51:02

show your personality.

0:51:020:51:04

Certainly Shirley does.

0:51:040:51:06

The style that I brought to Brian and Eileen's home is my style,

0:51:060:51:12

but taking into consideration, you know, their home.

0:51:120:51:16

And it's made me reflect on what I do.

0:51:160:51:20

So it's been a good experience.

0:51:200:51:22

- This is not the same house. - It's not the same house!

0:51:220:51:25

Two incredibly talented ladies.

0:51:250:51:27

-Thank you.

-Oh, thank you.

-Thank you very much.

0:51:270:51:29

I think it's fair to say that Shirley impressed me the most.

0:51:290:51:32

She had the strength to follow through,

0:51:320:51:35

and I could see her style in both rooms.

0:51:350:51:36

-Well, you took a risk, as you know.

-Mm.

0:51:360:51:39

You put your home in their hands. What do you think?

0:51:390:51:42

Was it worth...? Was it worth all the nail-biting?

0:51:420:51:44

-It was.

-Wow!

-I can't think of better hands that it could have been in.

0:51:440:51:48

Honestly, I'm just...

0:51:480:51:50

Well done, girls. Really glad.

0:51:500:51:52

In fact, what's your fee for the rest of the house?

0:51:520:51:56

And that's how you get a professional contract -

0:51:560:51:59

leave a job with happy customers.

0:51:590:52:01

Sadly, I think it'll take a lot for Nic and Leila

0:52:030:52:06

to convert John Geoghegan into one of those.

0:52:060:52:09

But not for lack of trying.

0:52:090:52:12

They've been pulling out all the stops to get the kitchen ready.

0:52:120:52:15

We managed to get 100 things done at once in the last 24 hours.

0:52:150:52:19

We've got an amazing kitchen.

0:52:190:52:21

Before, the kitchen was impractical for a large family,

0:52:210:52:24

and Rachel found it bland and boring.

0:52:240:52:27

Now, despite all the bickering, the kitchen has been transformed.

0:52:270:52:31

With the £8,000 budget,

0:52:320:52:34

Leila and Nic have added space-saving furniture,

0:52:340:52:37

bright wallpaper, colourful tiles and new kitchen units.

0:52:370:52:42

But will the colour inflame John?

0:52:430:52:45

-Hello.

-Hello.

-Hello, Celia.

0:52:510:52:53

This is a transformation, isn't it?

0:52:530:52:55

It certainly is.

0:52:550:52:57

My goodness!

0:52:570:52:58

I'm just taking it all in. It's quite a shock.

0:53:020:53:06

Yes.

0:53:060:53:07

So, Leila, looks like you had your input on the wall.

0:53:100:53:13

Yes, I have.

0:53:130:53:15

-And the lampshade.

-Yes.

0:53:150:53:17

Lots of colour.

0:53:170:53:19

What do you think John's going to say?

0:53:190:53:21

I-I've compromised, but I had to have a little bit...

0:53:210:53:25

I feel really passionate about what I do.

0:53:250:53:27

The tiles?

0:53:270:53:29

-That's Nic.

-Ahh!

0:53:290:53:31

Nic, you've used colour.

0:53:310:53:33

-Yeah, yeah, it works.

-That's a shock!

0:53:330:53:37

Now, I heard that there was a little bit of tension between you both.

0:53:370:53:41

-Yes, there was quite a bit of tension.

-Yeah.

0:53:410:53:45

It's just because we're both very passionate about this

0:53:450:53:47

and we both wanted to please everyone.

0:53:470:53:50

-Was it stressful?

-Very.

0:53:500:53:51

Obviously, it's about what John and Rachel want

0:53:510:53:55

and whether they like it or not.

0:53:550:53:56

So, it's crunch time.

0:53:560:53:59

And here comes the crunch.

0:54:050:54:07

I'm excited. Bit nervous, but just wait and see.

0:54:070:54:12

Everybody knows what I wouldn't want to see.

0:54:120:54:14

And if that room's anything like the bedroom...

I fear for my own sanity, along with anything else.

0:54:180:54:22

'Fearing the worst,

0:54:220:54:23

'Nic and Leila have made a break for the back patio.

0:54:230:54:26

'Lucky them!

0:54:260:54:27

'The family have no idea that they're listening in.'

0:54:270:54:31

Hello.

0:54:310:54:33

Welcome back.

0:54:360:54:38

-Thank you very much.

-How are you feeling?

0:54:380:54:41

A lot better now.

0:54:500:54:51

-Relieved?

-Yes.

0:54:510:54:53

-(Oh, my God!)

-Yes, very much so.

0:54:530:54:56

Really, really like this room.

0:54:560:54:59

Oh, good!

0:54:590:55:00

(Yes!)

0:55:000:55:02

We were slightly worried, John.

0:55:020:55:03

I like the paper.

0:55:030:55:05

(Yes!)

0:55:060:55:07

I think everything goes.

0:55:070:55:09

I'm really, really at ease now, because I was frightened.

0:55:090:55:12

I was... I was really worried about coming home.

0:55:120:55:14

What do you think, Rachel?

0:55:140:55:16

-I really like it. I do.

-Good.

0:55:160:55:18

It's just totally different.

0:55:180:55:20

We wouldn't have been able to do this, would we?

0:55:200:55:22

-No, it's lovely. Couldn't have asked for any different.

-Phew!

0:55:220:55:26

(Oh, brilliant!)

0:55:260:55:27

And has it made up for your unhappy face in the bedroom?

0:55:270:55:31

It has, yes. Very much so.

0:55:310:55:33

What do you think, kids? You like it?

0:55:350:55:37

I like all of it, especially the wallpaper and the chalkboard.

0:55:370:55:42

JOHN: There you go.

0:55:440:55:46

You can say thank you properly in a minute,

0:55:460:55:48

cos it's time for you to meet the two amateur designers.

0:55:480:55:51

-Hi.

-Thank you very much.

-Oh, a pleasure!

0:55:510:55:54

I am so relieved.

0:55:540:55:56

I didn't expect that at all, especially with John.

0:55:560:56:00

And I can't believe he actually even liked the wallpaper.

0:56:000:56:03

So, great result.

0:56:030:56:05

This has really solved our biggest social gathering issue.

0:56:050:56:09

Nobody needs to leave the house to come back in,

0:56:090:56:11

and for that, it's a big thumbs up. Ten out of ten.

0:56:110:56:14

Thank you very much.

0:56:140:56:16

This has made me think really seriously about what I want

0:56:160:56:18

to do now, and I would love to take up interior design professionally.

0:56:180:56:22

It would be a dream come true.

0:56:220:56:23

This is absolutely magnificent. This really, really works for us.

0:56:230:56:27

Nic, how many times do I say a thank you to somebody for them to,

0:56:270:56:30

you know, understand how grateful we are?

0:56:300:56:33

It seems that both Celia and the home owners like what I've done.

0:56:330:56:37

So, you know, I'm just very pleased with that.

0:56:370:56:41

-There's a couple of things that we'll change.

-Yes...

0:56:410:56:44

I know, I know!

0:56:440:56:46

Nic has definitely impressed me the most, by the way that he's

0:56:460:56:50

used the space really cleverly and he's listened properly to the brief.

0:56:500:56:55

I am very happy.

0:56:550:56:57

We would never have chosen a paper like that, but it goes very well.

0:56:570:57:00

-It's just...so lovely.

-Feels like a new house, doesn't it?

0:57:000:57:03

It does.

0:57:030:57:04

Obviously, you took a risk. You put your home in their hands.

0:57:040:57:07

-Yeah.

-Was it worth it?

0:57:070:57:09

Now I've seen the whole house, yes,

0:57:090:57:11

I would say it definitely is worth it.

0:57:110:57:12

You know, thanks to you two. Thank you.

0:57:120:57:15

-Thank you, thank you.

-Much appreciated.

-It's great to hear that.

0:57:150:57:18

Thank you so much.

0:57:180:57:21

-Ohh, thank you!

-Thanks a lot.
